Al Khor Purple Island is an island located in the municipality of Al Khor on the northeast coast of Qatar. It is the only archaeological site in the country attributable to the second millennium BC. There are four main periods of occupation on the island, dating from as early as c. 2000 BC to as late as 1900 AD. The island is best known for being the site of operation of a Kassite-controlled purple dye industry in the second millennium BC. The purple dye was produced from a species of sea snails. This dye itself is special in that it was only used for clothes worn by the ruling classes, and the elite. Words by Jan Janssen Interview & selected images courtesy of Viva Press

It's going to be another big year for Marion Cotillard, the ethereally beautiful Oscar-winning French actress. Her new movie, It's Only the End of the World, directed by French Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan, recently won second prize at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival where she was also appearing in Mal De Pierres, a post WWII drama about a woman teetering on the edge of madness after being trapped in a loveless marriage.

T

hough critics are again heaping high praise on Cotillard for her ability to capture intense emotion, nothing will compare to the global attention that will be focused on her with the release of Assassin's Creed in December. Based on the eponymous mega-selling Ubisoft video game, the film reunites Cotillard with actor Michael Fassbender and director Justin Kurzel with whom she worked on the recent Macbeth. The massive hype surrounding the $125 million production promises to make it one of the biggest box-office draws of the year and marks her third appearance in a Hollywood blockbuster following her previous work in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception. "I'm very happy to have had the chance to work with Michael and Justin again," Cotillard says. "Michael is one of the greatest actors of his generation and I'm lucky to work with him again on a very different and very interesting movie...Justin is an amazing director and the love he has for human beings and the way he wants to explore the human soul is the same for an independent movie or a blockbuster. In an adaptation of such a big video game, he has the same way of working in finding [and] exploring people's souls and hearts." The 40-year-old Marion Cotillard lives in Paris with noted French actor/director Guillaume Canet (Tell No One) and their 5-year-old, son, Marcel.

ENTERTAINMENT QH: Do you worry about having to deal with even more attention and adulation that playing in a big blockbuster like this will bring you? MC: Sometimes it's annoying to deal with the paparazzi, but I'm much better at handling that these days. Now I'm used to putting on makeup when I arrive or land at an airport. I try to turn it into a game. But it's not something I allow to affect me or spoil my enjoyment. I love my profession so much that I am willing to accept some of the things that come with it. Being successful in my world means having more attention - this is normal and I have become much more relaxed in accepting it. I have an amazing life and a beautiful family and I am able to work with very talented people doing what I love. I have nothing to complain about. QH: You live in Paris. Can you walk around without being stopped or stared at by your fans? MC: It happens sometimes. But usually people are very respectful. I'm able to lead a very normal life and I don't walk around Paris feeling selfconscious or wondering whether people recognise me. French actors also have a much easier time than American stars because we have laws in France that place limits on the paparazzi which is not the case in Los Angeles or New York where people can take photos of you wherever you go. I don't find the paparazzi a great distraction; I only get angry when the media paints a false picture of me. That I find disturbing. QH: You've worked on blockbusters before like Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. What made you want to do Assassin's Creed? MC: Working with Michael (Fassbender) and Justin (Kurzel) on Macbeth was such an intense and wonderful experience that I was looking forward to doing another film with them. Michael is so brilliant - he surprises you every day on the set with the different things he brings to his character and to every scene.

Having reached 40 last year, Cotillard looks as radiant as ever

QH: Marion, you seem to be working even more now than ever, even with a 5-year-old son to look after?

rare that directors think of me when it comes to those kinds of movies! (Laughs) But I love pushing myself to emotional extremes. That kind of sensation and experience is what drove me to become an actress.

MC: Even though my priorities have changed and I am very attached to my family life, I have more energy and desire to work than ever. It's as if everything in my world has gone to the next level. And I even sleep less than before because my son Marcel gets up early in the morning. But that's the life I have and it's very full and rewarding.

When I step into a character, I forget everything else going on around me. I'm able to transport myself into the heart and soul of that person and throw myself into their story and the time in which they are living. That is what I find so stimulating and intoxicating about working on a film.

QH: You seem drawn to tense dramas like we see you play in Xavier Dolan's It's Only the End of the World and Mal de Pierres?

QH: You also have a very big film coming out later this year in Assassin's Creed. Have you ever played the video game yourself?

MC: I would like to do lighter kinds of stories and some comedies in the next few years but it's very

MC: Are you kidding? It's much too violent for me!

14

Michael and Justin are both exceptional people and very talented, and I enjoyed the connection I had with them on Macbeth, even though it was an emotionally and psychologically exhausting experience. QH: Why was that? MC: I'm the kind of person who would never hurt a fly, and this film was so violent and brutal that it was very stressful for me. It was by far the darkest role of my career. QH: What was it like working with Xavier Dolan on It's Only the End of the World? MC: I had a beautiful time working with Xavier and with such an outstanding cast (Gaspard Ulliel, Vincent Cassel, and Jessica Chastain co-star in the film -ED). Xavier is one of the best directors and is

very good at working with actors and understanding how to bring out the best performances and create the mood that is essential to make a great film. Xavier is like the Dardenne brothers and Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Assassin's Creed) in that respect. QH: Is the director the key when it comes to your making a choice whether to do a particular film or not? MC: I want to work with directors who like to work very closely with actors. I need that kind of collaboration and I'm very sensitive to the way I work with a director. It's not satisfying for me to be on a set with a director who is brilliant at creating beautiful images and telling exciting stories but doesn't want to establish a close connection to his actors and be willing to inspire me. I need a director to be able to take me into his vision and make me want to push myself to the limit. QH: Is that where the kick of acting comes for you, this desire to test your limits? MC: Yes. Somewhere inside me there's this desire to keep raising the bar higher to the point where I am scared. I know that I need to play a part when I see elements in the character that give me anxiety and I'm not sure how I'm going to give the performance that's required. That kind of tension is what takes me to the next level and beyond my comfort zone. QH: Was acting your destiny in life? MC: It was my dream to become an actress. My mother was an actress and so she would bring me to her rehearsals and the theatre was a big part of my world whilst I was growing up. I would also spend a lot of my time watching American movies and actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. They were my idols. But I worried very deeply that I might not be able to realise my dream because only a very few people ever get to succeed at that level. Once I started finding work it was the fulfilment of everything that I had hoped for. I still remember the experience of walking onto the set of these big Hollywood films and shaking my head and smiling as if it wasn't real, that maybe I was still dreaming.

Cotillard will appear in the much anticipated Assassin's Creed with its initial release this December

QH: You turned 40 last year. Has that caused you to reflect on your life or career to any extent? Are you happy with the state of your world today? MC: It's a happy time for me, and I feel very good about what I've been able to accomplish and the way things have been evolving in my life. I was once a very dark and fearful young woman, who had a lot of anger and anxiety in life. For many years now I've been at peace with myself and it's so joyful to be able to appreciate everything that I have and how far I've come from those dark days. I feel very fortunate. n

ENTERTAINMENT

A Family Affair Words by John Hunt

There’s a reasonable argument to be made that Hollywood films of the 21st Century are far less diverse in terms of subject matter than they were a generation ago. QH’s John Hunt however can see a glimmer of hope courtesy of the increasingly popular family Film.

I

n days past, as well as there being a far broader palette of films from which to choose, there was undeniably more originality coming out of even the major studios in the US. It’s not uncommon to look back on your youth through rose-tinted spectacles, but I’m struggling to remember – apart from some superb independent and foreign films – the last time I saw something that totally blew me away. What we seem to have now is a complete takeover of modern cinema complexes by sequels, reboots and remakes. The motivating factor, of course, is money, and we are now on our seventh Star Wars film, with (at least) another two to come, plus an imminent spin off. By my reckoning, they’ve blown up a Death Star in 43% of Star Wars films to date.

Milking It For All Its Worth Comic Book giants Marvel and DC have brought a dozen of their characters to the big screen and appear to be releasing new CGI-based movies featuring said characters (and actors) on what seems to be a bi-monthly basis. It’s less a question of ‘where’s the originality?’ and more: ‘where’s your self-respect?’ The merits of independent cinema are an argument for another time, but the one area where Hollywood has been consistently hitting the target without subjecting us to nine sequels is with the family film.

Animation Domination The big studios have really nailed it here, and while we can be sure that altruism is not the motive, at least they are bringing the viewer something original. This past June, I was a guest of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) which was celebrating its 70th anniversary of showcasing (predominantly) independent films curated from

18

the UK and the rest of the world. It does, however, usually, make a splash with a big Hollywood world premiere and this year, it did so with the premiere of Finding Dory, an aquatically-themed family cartoon which is a de facto sequel to Finding Nemo. The latter was released 13 years ago, so we’ll forgive. I was at the first showing of Finding Dory but I’m not going to spoil the film for you by including a review here, except to say that I thought it was an absolute delight and it’s guaranteed to be a hit. But it might surprise you to learn that while regular films have dumbed-down so appallingly, and that originality has all but left Hollywood (seemingly for good), family films have become more sophisticated.

A Pleasant Surprise A family film, especially an animation in the halcyon days of Walt Disney was very much - what you see is what you get. So whilst a film might be suitable for the entire family, and might delight your little ones, Mum and Dad might have been bored rigid. The release of the movie Shrek in 2001 altered matters significantly in that this was a family-friendly film, which also contained a number of very subtle interjections of adult themes that went completely over the heads of the children. Shrek was a watershed moment, and now virtually all family-friendly animations have these little ‘presents’ for the adults, now universally known as ‘Easter eggs’. These broaden the appeal of the film, and keep the adults on their toes if nothing else. Indeed, the Easter eggs within the very average Angry Birds movie were the best thing about it! The time, money and star names lining up to voice characters in modern animations is testament to their pulling power and also the kind of money they can

expect to make. The Toy Story trilogy pulled in nearly $ 2 billion worldwide. So if you get the chance – or if your kids don’t give you the option – then give Finding Dory a try. Granted, you’ll then have to shell out for the toys, the t-shirt and the DVD but it’ll keep the kids happy and you might find yourself enjoying the film just as much as I did. n

ENTERTAINMENT

Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Selected photography by Jessie Palanca

This month, the QH team went for a fun night out at Toro Toro Lounge, the South American culinary creation by Celebrity Chef Richard Sandoval to try out their famous Wall Street Wednesday night. Toro Toro is the popular Pan Latin American restaurant which is located in the palatial grounds of the Marsa Malaz Kempinski on The Pearl- Doha. This hotspot is an exciting concept in Doha’s booming gastronomic and lounge scene, priding itself on offering guests a contemporary take on tastes from the Latin American region including; Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.

22

A Warm Welcome We were met by Eileen Guezikaraian who is the PR manager for Toro Toro. We have our ID’s scanned and access is granted, phew! We took the “fluffy” elevator ride up to the lounge and enter a dark, seductive space with the bar taking centre stage. The place is full and people are dancing, laughing and the music is really good.

Market Fluctuations I ask Eileen why everyone is checking their watches all the time and she explains that on a Wednesday night Toro Toro has discounts for specific beverages which fluctuate in price according to the Wall Street market, hence the name of the night being - Wall Street Miercoles (Spanish for Wednesdays). Every 30 minutes, from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., customers get one of the signature beverages

with an amazing 50% off. The new beverage is clearly highlighted on the information board; you just have to wait for your favourite one to turn up. Before I know it, the music has me moving my feet. I’m dancing and enjoying the atmosphere but at the same time I am keeping an eye on my watch. Of course you can also enjoy other beverages and food but I am having fun playing along with this catchy concept. Later, I grab a word with Bojan Petrovic, the executive chef. He explains that Toro Toro cuisine is all about an artful take on South and Central American ingredients which are presented on small plates, ideal for sharing. When I asked how he defines his food. His answer is, “vibrant and alive in your month.” I would certainly agree with those sentiments, in every single bite you can taste strong and dynamic ingredients that go really well together.

FOOD & DINING

Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Photography by Jessie Palanca

QH is in the mood for some Far East fare, so with that in mind, we could only head to one place. Having opened its doors in September 2015, Nozomi has swiftly become a leading destination for diners keen on sampling contemporary Japanese cuisine.

T

he restaurant is nestled within the tranquil gardens of the Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl, and boasts stunning views of the Persian Gulf. The fine-dining dream team at Nozomi is lead by Executive Chef Takeumi Hiraoka, who learned his craft in France, and whose mission it is to introduce guests to the delights of the subtle fusion between Japanese and French cuisine. A balmy Sunday summer night settles over the Gulf as we reach our destination. Immediately upon

32

entering, I’m struck by the beauty of the décor, meticulously emulating founder Marios George's original restaurant and lounge from a bygone era of Paris circa 1970s. We are greeted by PR, Sabrina Bouras, who guides us to our table; passionately regaling us with the philosophy, concept and history of an establishment she is clearly proud to be a part of. The staff live and breathe to make each guest’s dining experience a memorable one. Our gustatory guru (waiter in lesser establishments) Abderrazzak, approaches our table, and so begins our food odyssey. We opt for premium Chef's Smoking Sashimi; the dish is presented with a flourish, exuding an eruption of vapour that wisps across the table due to the of dry ice. Such a unique touch and unlike anything I’ve experienced in fine dining before. Our selection comes from the most premium cuts of sashimi that are available and comprises of Otoro, Chutoro and Hamachi. Next we sample the marinated Hamachi, one of Nozomi’s signature dishes. Our selection features infused Japanese textures and flavours based

on a more global palette. In this instance, our Hamachi is marinated with Yuzu Ponzu and served with jalapeno salsa and diced chilli. Our evening continues in this fashion; an eclectic mix of tastes and pleasant surprises. We are treated to Gulf Prawn Tempura Maki, a dish that pays homage to the amazing local Gulf shellfish that is available in this region. The sweet, spicy flavours combine perfectly with the crunchy textures. Another unique starter arrives at our table, the Taraba Roll. Best described as a style of roll that does not include rice or seaweed, it uses king crab and white truffles and implements red radish for a peppery aftertaste. Cucumber helps give some freshness, followed by a smooth avocado mousse that ensures the essence of truffle lingers on my tongue. The GM, Richard Mackay confides in me that it is an offering they deeply enjoyed creating, and are currently exploring the idea further to incorporate in their future menu due to be released in September of this year. With our impressive array of starters behind us, we delve into our mains. First, I try the Kobe

Arabian Gulf Prawn Tempura Maki

Chef's Smoking Sashimi a sight to behold

Location: In the gardens of the island of Marsa Malaz Kempinski. Timings: Lunch: Mon - Sun 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Dinner: Mon - Sun 7:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. Dress Code: Smart Casual Licensed: Yes Nikkuman; a soft bun that would perhaps be a gentle introduction for guests that haven’t yet tried the rich flavours of Kobe. The meat is sweet, and when cooked, the flavour that is unique to Kobe, soaks up into the bun and causes a sensation in the mouth like no other. It’s time for the celebrated Kobe Sirloin. Richard explains that it took eight months of negotiating and cross-continental politics to get this product into Qatar. He adds that it has been worth every late night phone call to achieve it and that this is the level of excellence Nozomi stands for. Their Kobe is now from one of only two halal farms in Hygo Japan and they only accept Grade 9. Nozomi are immensely thrilled at how well their guests have taken to it. The Mushroom Takikomi Gohan is a perfect complement to our mains. A unique flavoursome bed of rice accompanies our hot dishes, mixing mushrooms from Japan with French truffles, all roasted in butter and Dashi Stock. It pairs perfectly with the Black Cod or Kobe Beef. The unique flavours, set with an artistic touch and eye for detail bordering on an obsession for perfection (a common Japanese trait), are a joy to

savour. I’ve left just enough room for the final act. Passionfruit Parfait. Its centre oozing citrus Yuzu lime jelly. It strikes me as the perfect dessert on a hot summer evening, and not too sweet either. No matter how satiated we are, the evening wouldn’t be complete without sampling the famous Nozomi Fondant. A decadent delight of dark chocolate and sea salt, its crunchy exterior harbours a simmering molten secret. If you seek a memorable dining experience, then look no further. Nozomi has this part of the market truly cornered. n

Word Of Mouth Photography by Jessie Palanca

QH: Were the prices reasonable?

This column is part of a monthly contest where we send one of our readers to experience a meal in a restaurant. It’s our way of giving the community a voice in our pages. This month Mr. Ferdinand Araga and his wife Mrs. Star Araga sampled a buffet in c.taste at Centro Capital Doha Hotel. Here is their review.

FA: Yes, the prices were very reasonable. The quantity of one order is a lot and it makes sense to share. So we shared a lot of the dishes.

FA: The ambiance made us feel very comfortable and the enticing food, of course.

QH: Describe the ambiance.

QH: Least favourite thing about the restaurant?

FA: I like the whole set up; the place is very clean and organized. The ambiance made me feel like I was in a peaceful, relaxing and romantic place. This allowed me to enjoy my meal with my family. The candle lights and sound of music were so striking and made me feel fully recharged again after a stressful day at work.

FA: The restaurant felt a little on the small side.

QH: Favourite thing about the restaurant?

QH: Was there a special touch or flair to the experience? FA: Yes. I really love the lighting, it is perfect for couples. It makes the place look romantic and the music too was quite nice.

QH: Describe the quality of the food. QH: What did you order? FA: We started with some appetizers, first of which, was the Salmon and Citrus Salad and then the Oriental Meze Selection. Both were very fresh and nice. We also had a lovely Fillet Steak Sandwich.

FA: The food served was very nice and of a good quality. The meat and veggies were so fresh and tasty. The roasted meat was well marinated. The food was delicious and well balanced.

QH: Could the overall experience be improved? If so, how? FA: The dining space could be enlarged a little. n

QH: Describe the quality of the service.

Main Course FA: For our mains, we had the Grilled Australian Tenderloin which was soft and very flavoursome. We also had the Oven Roasted Lamb Rack, which we were both particularly fond of. Dessert Dessert consisted of a Chocolate Brownie and a Rocky Road. Both were top notch and I would order them again for sure. Beverages For our beverages, we had a mocktail and a melon juice. Again, both were very fresh and enjoyable.

34

FA: The staff were so polite and they made sure that whilst we were waiting for our food, they gave us refreshments and bread buns to snack on with the most tasty salted olive paste. So I would say that the quality of service was excellent. The cleanliness was very good and the staff were always there ready to assist. QH: Would you go back? Why/why not? FA: I would go back because of our good experience. I may add it to my list as one of my favourites in Doha. I will go back with my friends next time so they can experience what we experienced.

Doha’s streets can often resemble a fabulous car show with luxury cars making their rounds on a daily basis around the city. So when we heard that the Maserati Levante SUV had just arrived to Qatar, QH had to meet with Umberto Cini, the Managing Director for Maserati Middle East, India and Africa to learn more. QH: So, can you tell us a little about Maserati as well as your involvement. UC: This love affair of mine started in 2004 and it was a beautiful time because this was when the brand was reborn.

46

Just before I arrived in 1998, Maserati came up with the 2200 GT, which was the first Maserati of the new era, produced together with the strong influence of Ferrari. Then in 2002 it was the 4200 GT, which was famous because of the boomerang lights. It was one of our most beautiful cars and still is. It helped us return with a bang back to the USA. 2003/4 was a seminal moment with the launch of the fifth generation of the Quattroporte and this was the car that, more than any other, which contributed to the new era and success of Maserati. After this we came out with a number of other cars such as the Ghibli and now the Levante. Now, we are looking to take Maserati to our declared target of 70,000 units by 2018. Just to put that into perspective, in 1997 the factory produced 700 cars. So this is our journey, it’s a beautiful journey that only a historical brand like Maserati can accomplish. We have 102 years of automotive history behind us.

QH: The Maserati Ghibli’s motto is “The absolute opposite of ordinary”; is this statement true for the company as a whole also? The motto came out in a natural way; this is not the brand’s motto but the Ghibli’s. However, it can also apply to all of our product line because they are all extraordinary cars. We try to distil a sense of what it means to be Italian, this is one of our unique selling points, I mean look at our cars, they look Italian and are simply fabulous. They are masterpieces of design, such wonderful craftsmanship. If you see how our cars are produced, it’s a kind of poetry. You can still see our people stitching our seats and our steering wheels...it takes a lot of people to make a Maserati. So the craftsmanship is another pillar as well the performance of the car. We are among the first brands to have won an F1 Championship back in 1957, so we have that history, that pedigree. We come from a pure motor racing background, for us it’s always been about performance, right from the start.

The brand new Maserati Levante

QH: How important is the Middle East market to Maserati, can you please put it in perspective for us? In terms of overall numbers, this region represents about 10 per cent of the global volumes for Maserati. Maserati has the highest market share compared with our competitors in this region. So compared to Europe, China or the U.S.A. Maserati is more dominant here. For example, take the Ghibli, since the first month it was launched, it has been the market leader in the Middle East. We are now in our 25th month and we are still the market leader in this region. We have a strong presence here in the region with an office in Dubai which serves our partners in various countries and of course our partners are also very committed to the brand and our expansion plans. Al Fardan Group has made an important investment with the Maserati showroom located

on The Pearl Qatar. We are giving our customers state of the art facilities and services. We have very strong relationship with our partners in terms of customer satisfaction, customer care, and in the end, this all helps create a unique and strong brand. We also do a lot of customisation for our clients, this is another important element. QH: Maserati has now been making cars for over 100 years, would you say that this is now the best era for the brand, in terms of quality, reliability and profitability? Yes, we now have the widest product range we have ever had. If you look at the global luxury market, until now we were just ‘playing’ in half of the market but with the arrival of the Levante, we are now able to cover the remaining 50 percent. So we now have a product portfolio which entirely covers all of the segments in the luxury car market.

48

QH: The Maserati Levante just recently arrived to Qatar; this is your first attempt at a luxury SUV. What do you find special about this car and how is it doing in Qatar with regards to sales numbers? Yes, this is the first ever Maserati SUV and its special because it is a Maserati. By that, I mean that we didn’t simply do an SUV, we did a Maserati SUV. All of the components are from Maserati such as the chassis, the engine, the suspension, so technically it is a Maserati car. Also the centre of gravity is the lowest of this category which enhances the performance and driveability. We have a new info-tainment system but at the same time we have the same weight distribution that we have on the Ghibli. So yes, overall this is what makes the Levante unique in this segment and we are convinced that we are bringing a breath of fresh air to the luxury

SUV segment. The only problem we have is to try to satisfy the demand. Sales in Qatar of the Levante are doing extremely well. In this region we have a six month waiting list. So my question is: when are you gna’ buy one? n ALFARDAN SPORTS MOTORS - MASERATI Location: The Peal Qatar (Qanat Quartier) Visit: www.maserati.qa Email: sportmotor@alfardan.com.qa Contact: 4420-8788

Marathon Man Words by Simon Jones, images courtesy of Ziyad Rahim

Ziyad Rahim is an adventurerunner living & working in Qatar. He is the founder and CEO of Z Adventures and co-founder of Endurance Leaders Mideast FZC. Ziyad is currently based in Qatar from where he oversees the operations of the two companies which are primarily engaged in organizing multisport adventures around the world. QH contributor Simon Jones managed to grab a moment with this busy record breaker.

A

s an avid athlete and traveller, Ziyad has completed over 200 long-distance events covering more than 40 countries. He also holds ten Guinness World Records in long-distance running and is the only athlete in the world to have completed a half marathon,

50

full marathon and an ultra-marathon on each continent. He is a member of the exclusive seven continents marathon club, having completed the circuit five times. QH: So tell me a little about Z Adventures and how you started that whole enterprise. ZR: “In 2015, I setup Z Adventures for people who, like me, are passionate about endurance running. A year prior to that, I co-organized the Triple 7 Quest, where I took 36 runners from around the world to run seven marathons on seven continents in the fastest possible time. We achieved the feat in Antarctica 10 days after we started the first marathon in Australia. In the process my runners shattered as many as 15 World Records” “Under Z Adventures, I started out with the two Caribbean cruise challenges, a new idea, whereby runners were able to run six marathons in six countries over a one week all-inclusive cruise vacation in the Caribbean. The Majority of my clientele around the world are members of the Marathon Globetrotters and the Marathon Country

Multiple Guinness World Record holder - Ziyad Rahim

Club. Their aim is to run a marathon in as many countries as possible, and my company facilitates that in the quickest and cheapest possible way.” “On my last trip to the Southern Caribbean, we had a strong 34 member contingent who between them had run over 4,000 marathons. Most of them had multiple World Records and the oldest competitor was 78. I love the fact that I could arrange these runs in such exotic places. At the same time I noticed that there was a demand for organized runs right here in Qatar. So the Qatar Running Series was born. I wanted to arrange frequent runs with less people and give finishers unique medals on completion of each run. So far, I have organized the 2015/16 QRS Winter Series with 6 races, followed by QRS Spring Series 2016 with 6 races, 2 Ramadan Challenges and 2 additional races in between those. Each race has up to 200 people entering. I like to keep it low-key so it is more personal. I have arranged races all over Qatar; from Education City to Aspire Park to Ceremonial Road. There is no shortage of great places to run here. Moreover, there is a great community of runners here too.”

There is always time for a celebratory pic

QH: I saw on your Facebook page that you were just in Northern Pakistan organizing the first ever Marathon in Hunza! How did that turn out? ZR: The“Hunza Marathon was a runaway success. Over 400 runners took part in the inaugural event that took place in one of remotest areas of Pakistan. To get to Hunza, one needs to drive for over 20 hours from Islamabad on windy roads and cross passes which are as high as 14,000 feet. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. It’s nestled between 23,000ft high peaks in the Karakoram / Himalayas ranges.” “Hunza Valley is 8.000ft above sea level, so not the best place to attempt a PB (personal best). It was always my dream to run and organize a marathon in Pakistan. The people of Hunza are extremely fit and are excellent porters. However, they have never been exposed to long-distance running. I was shocked at the response when I got there. Over 25 runners (including 3 local women) completed the full marathon with absolutely no training and no proper running attire. Some of them ran the full marathon in flip flops, some barefoot and some in military boots. I am also extremely thankful to the running community in Qatar, they donated their old running gear for the residents of Hunza. Off the back of that race, plans are now underway to launch the first ever Pakistan Running Series with events in various

51

cities across Pakistan.” QH: That’s sounds awesome. Maybe I will come to Pakistan and join one of your races. What have you got in store for us with regards to Qatar? ZR: “You are more than welcome to join anytime. Pakistan’s northern areas are absolutely breathtaking and extremely safe; contrary to what we hear in the news. So in August we are organizing the “QRS Summer Sizzler” in Education City's Oxygen Park, with a 3k, 5k and 10k race on offer. This is a great location as there are air-conditioned covered walkways and man-made waterfalls on the route!” “In late September, we will launch the QRS Fall Series followed by winter and spring series in 2017. I am also going to branch out and start an Aquathon series this September with six races and am toying with the

idea of a triathlon series as triathlon is something that I am looking at participating in myself.” QH: Sounds like you’re going to be busy! A full time job, marathons in Qatar and all over the world, aquathons and triathlons! ZR: “Ha-ha, I hope so! I love endurance racing and I love that I can provide an opportunity for people to take part in these kinds of races. Especially here in Qatar, where there aren’t so many options for regular participation in organized runs.”n

Beach Body Ready Words and selected images by Rowad Ehlela

Okay, so summer is upon us but good news, there’s still time to achieve that illusive beach body look this summer. Whether you have a vacation of a lifetime to prepare for or you simply don’t want to suck in the gut for the entire holiday, the experts at EVOLVE – Mind/Body/Soul have the tips you need to succeed.

B

efore we get started let’s consider your goals, whether it is to tone up, lose weight, add muscle or all of the above it is important to establish clear direction and focus to be able to achieve your ideal beach body appearance in time for the departure lounge of Hamad International Airport.

Plan Of Action Having a POA will be crucial to you achieving your beach body physique – like any goal it is important to be organised. This will be in the form of a ‘programme’ and will be completely dependent on your goals. The general goals for most beach body physiques is to become more toned and reduce body fat, therefore your programme must include a reasonable amount of cardiovascular training and resistance training.

Top Tip Seek a proven programme either online from a reliable fitness professional or a personal trainer within your local community who can analyse your current shape and advise you on a programme most suitable for your body type.

Exercise Now that you have your program it is time to act! This doesn’t mean things will come easily however – the majority of people will only stick to a programme for a number of days before they fall off the wagon, it is vital you remain consistent in action and are not disheartened away by a lack of results. Yes, it may take more than a couple of workouts to take the shape of an Adonis so be patient and keep pushing yourself. If you can begin a programme with a workout buddy or personal trainer by your side, this will go a long way in ensuring consistency and developing ‘habitual training’ (meaning that despite a little soreness or lack of motivation, you’ll push yourself to keep going so as to not let your partner down.

Top Tip Avoid the common mistakes that others have made when following an exercise program, these include –

52

not sticking to it and being inconsistent, not tracking weight & measurements, skipping vital rest days & making it up as they go along.

Mentality Your mentality is pretty much the lynch pin of everything, if you are not in the right frame of mind then no matter how good your plan is, you will not achieve it. Confucius said “He who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right” and I have to agree. If you have a realistic and well thought out goal and are 100% dedicated to achieve it, then there is nothing in your way but you. You must accept responsibility and give it all you’ve got. It will be worth it when you’re looking back on the vacation pictures, believe me!

Top Tip There are plenty of motivational talks and podcasts online to keep you motivated to work out and avoid unhealthy temptations, check out speakers - Les Brown & Greg Plitt.

Nutrition There is no avoiding healthy eating, the summer is a time to shred body fat in order to look lean and toned in your bikini / shorts. Developing a healthy eating routine can be tough if you don’t know too much about optimal nutrition so please take note of the top tip below. For the duration of around 30 days prior to your vacation dependent on your current shape you will want to cut down on the carbs and fatty meal choices – it is best to consult a dietician or nutritionist for this as they can write you a bespoke programme that is specific to your dietary needs.

Top Tip Make healthy choices – this will be somewhat of an educational process but it will benefit you in the long run. For every craving you have consider what healthy alternatives are out there, so for example, brown bread instead of white, grilled instead of fried etc.

Lifestyle Change All of the above are about creating a healthy lifestyle which will reflect in your body’s composition. Although yes, this may be to achieve a particular shape for 7–14 days in the Costa Del Sol, this should be a learning curve experience which you go on to continue throughout the year. Imagine the results next year when you’re going into your preparations in good shape and with plenty of knowledge, which leads me on to my top tip for a lifestyle change.

Top Tip Knowledge is power – learn as much as you can, the beauty of the fitness market is that it is ever evolving from diet, exercise, to the latest gadgets. Seek knowledge in all aspects you can to develop a well-rounded physique. GOOD LUCK!

From modern skyscrapers and neon lights to palaces and pagodas, Seoul is a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity. The real pulse of the city lies in its recent transformation as a cultural hub. Having launched itself into mainstream media, with its trendy, fashion, unique food and K -pop culture - Seoul is a fascinating, fast paced mega metropolis of Asia that simple cannot be ignored.

A

s soon as you touch down in this capital city which is home to nearly 12 million people, you’ll naturally sync your pace with the locals (non-stop...that is). With so much to see and so much to do, you’ll find it hard to resist the urge to

58

get on out there and get on with it. So first, stop… fill up that jetlagged belly with some street food, Korean style.

Street Food Aplenty Now this may seem a little daunting but there’s more on offer than just fried insects. Almost on every corner you can find delicacies from the normal to the unfamiliar. Perhaps play it safe to begin with by trying some goldfish shaped bread (seriously) stuffed with red beans and lentils, dumplings or mung bean pancakes may be your thing before building up your courage and determination for the more bizarre bites on offer…fried fish guts anyone? Interestingly, one of the city’s most famous food carts is so popular the owner is believed to be a millionaire. Selling Hotteok- a sweet treat filled with sugar, cinnamon, and nuts then fried till it becomes a delicious caramel donut. Sounds pretty normal right? Until you watch locals add their own concoctions of sesame-soy sweet glass noodles, carrots, and spinach stuffed inside the donut then basted with a fruit-seasoned soy sauce.

Jack Of All Trades One of the most well known dishes synonymous with South Korea is kimchi. This dish continues to rise in popularity worldwide due to its health benefits as well as its now trendy reputation. Some murmur ‘it’s only fermented cabbage’ but who knew such a simple staple could be mixed up and served in so many different and wonderful ways? Rather quirky is the fact that Koreans eat so much of this super-spicy condiment, natives say kimchi instead of cheese when getting their pics taken. This dish is made with a mix of garlic, salt, vinegar, chilli peppers, and other spices and is served at every meal, either alone or mixed with rice or noodles. Part of a high-fibre, low-fat diet that has kept obesity at bay in South Korea. kimchi is also used in everything from soups to pancakes, and as a topping on pizza and burgers so it’s a must try on your trip. Korean BBQ restaurants are also a popular choice and a great place to mingle with locals. Hanjeongsik, a multi-dish Korean banquet, is an all-time favourite filled with

The K-Pop Experience Always wanted star treatment? Well now you can really feel like a fully fledged K-Pop star thanks to Visit Seoul’s free K-pop experience which offers a behind the scenes tour at some of the video sets, dressing rooms and makeup chairs of the country’s biggest stars. Remember Psy, of Gangnam style fame? Who wouldn’t want to try on some of those loud and proud outfits? Feel free to leave the tour or stay on an extra hour to learn and perfect a song and dance routine to leave you feeling like the award winning superstar that you are.

Time to wind down A trip to the city’s most popular park set along the Han River, the Yeouido Hangang Park is perfect for a nice walk. Indulge in the view of Seoul as you go by or order some fried chicken in a cup from the many vendors in the park. Eating, it seems, is the done thing here.

A Shopper’s Oasis

Spicy Korean Crab Stew

Of course, what trip would be complete without some shopping? From haggling and bargain hunting to luxury spending, you can find it all within the Dongdaemun area. Colourful & endlessly fascinating, stores in Seoul like to sell all kinds of knick-knacks, from clothes to quirky souvenirs. Enormous wholesale clothing markets dominate whilst thousands of small stores set in large modern malls are open until well after sunset, so you can literally, shop till you drop! And just to add to the excitement - as a foreign visitor you can grab a tax rebate on your spending at the airport. As our whirlwind tour comes to a close, we take one last venture out to the N Seoul Tower on Namsan (one of the city's mountains) for a little bit of reflection and some perfect panoramic photo ops over Seaoul. n

Camping like you've never experienced before

Words by Dawn Gibson, images courtesy of Banyan Tree Al Wadi

Shake off the shackles of city life at an opulent luxury retreat just over one hours’ flight from Doha. With its rainforest-themed day spa and sumptuous Arabian villas, Banyan Tree Al Wadi is a desert oasis like no other.

F

loating serenely across the turquoise surface of the private villa swimming pool, the serenity is almost tangible. The only sounds are the soft twittering of birds above, a slight rustle of leaves in the light breeze. Suddenly, without warning, there is an uninvited visitor.

60

An oryx steps elegantly into view from behind a tree, all long limbs and curious eyes, seeming to question how we have found our way to his own very special oasis. This is not an uncommon experience at Banyan Tree Al Wadi, a luxury resort in the United Arab Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah which combines ecotourism with lavish Arabian hospitality. Ras Al Khaimah is a superbly convenient weekend destination, a combination of long, white sandy beaches, terracotta desert sunsets and majestic mountains only 70 minutes’ flight from Doha and a 45-minute drive from Dubai. This resort fits effortlessly into the ancient sands, a haven of tranquillity designed to encourage guests to forget their worries for at least a day or two.

Arabian Opulence Whether you stay in a deluxe pool villa (as we did), or a tented pool villa, the accommodation is a stunning adaptation of traditional Arabian touches in a contemporary setting. Think of a cool, spacious sanctuary with polished wood floors and high ceilings, elaborate Arabic latticework, the whisper of soft linen and silk brocade. The sumptuous bedroom featured a king-sized bed topped with tent-style furnishings. There was an enormous en suite bathroom with a deep standalone tub and a luxurious rain shower; a generous walk-in wardrobe, and a sitting room complete with a plasma TV, DVD player and mini audio system. This is truly an oasis, with nature on your doorstep. Step outside onto the decking and you are

A 60-hectare nature reserve full of gazelle and oryx

transported into another world, complete with your own temperature-controlled private pool, and a view over the shifting sands. Keep an eye out for the wildlife – a 60-hectare nature reserve within the resort is home to herds of Arabian gazelle and oryx. If you are keen to embrace your wild side, there are plenty of activities that will appeal, many of which are free for resort guests. Find out about the region’s hunting heritage at a falconry show, where you will have the opportunity to hold one of the world’s most majestic birds of prey. Or you can saddle up for a camel trek, go for a four wheel drive desert safari, or try your hand at archery. There’s a kids’ club as well, of course, to keep your little ones amused while you relax.

Desert Delights The heart of the oasis is the Banyan Tree Spa, a cluster of enchanting treatment pavilions and hydrothermal facilities fit for royalty. Beauty therapists trained in Indonesia and Thailand deliver services inspired by beauty practices around the world, including Ayurvedic massages and Middle Eastern hammam treatments. The best way to sample what this multi-award-winning spa has to offer is the Rainforest Experience (QR250/QR130 for in-house guests), a trail through a series of revitalizing hydro ‘stations’ such as a rain walk, ice igloo and a herbal sauna, before ending up at a tiled ‘vitality pool’and a giant Jacuzzi with jet stations to soothe every muscle.

Lavish arabian splendour

Another option is to take the complimentary shuttle service to Banyan Tree’s Ras Al Khaimah Beach Resort, where you can top up your tan at the private beach or by the pool. Whatever way you spend your days, when you feel a little peckish, the dining options will not disappoint. Make sure you book a terrace table at Al Wadi’s signature Thai restaurant Safran, and sample a cocktail or two at the sophisticated rooftop Moon Bar. Sitting in the Moon Bar’s open air lounge, the night sky twinkling brightly overhead, it will be hard to contemplate leaving this peaceful oasis. n

Banyan Tree Al Wadi Qatar Airways and Air Arabia fly direct from Doha to Ras Al Khaimah: flight time 1 hour, 10 minutes. Expect to pay QR500 to QR800 for a return economy ticket. Alternatively, fly to Dubai or Sharjah, then taxi to the resort. ACCOMMODATION A stay at Banyan Tree Al Wadi starts QR 2,480 per night for an Al Rimal Pool Villa, inclusive of buffet breakfast, soft drinks, falconry show, interactive owl experience, archery and a nature walk. Each villa sleeps 2 adults and 2 children under the age of 12. Interconnecting pool villas accommodating 4 adults and 4 children start from QR 4,220, including extra activities. Words by Marijana Ivezic

Ever wondered why some people seem to breeze through life, whilst for others things can be a little trickier? QH takes a look at the power of positive thinking. Having the right kind of attitude is perhaps the most important factor for a fun and full life; it affects many aspects of life without you even realising it. A positive frame of mind is also extremely important with regards to the relationship which you have with yourself. We hear so much about what is good for us, what kind of food is the right kind of food, how WE should live our lives. We are bombarded with too much information which can be overwhelming and quite confusing when we are trying to put all the pieces together in our busy lives.

A moment Of Self Reflection So stop and focus on the only information that truly matters – what your heart and head is telling you. This is the only voice you should listen to and follow. We attract situations and people according to the way we think and view the world. Is the world generally a place of boundless opportunities with interesting and

kind people? Or, is it a tough, unforgiving place full of self centred types? Of course, these are two extreme views of the world but which ever you naturally veer towards can have profound implications on the way your life may turn out. Life can consist of pleasant and unpleasant moments and it is our job to make sure that we balance our thoughts, take our time and in the end, give more importance to the events which make us develop and grow.

I Am My Own Worst Enemy Whether you are an expat or a local in Qatar, full time parent, a hard working manager or a student, we all face the same challenges. Our aim of course is to be fulfilled and therefore happy. Nobody wants to be miserable. There is a way to be happy or at least happier and that is to realise that the behaviours and habits that we do affect the way we are and see the world. If you find yourself swearing and acting out regularly due to little things such as traffic jams or small work issues, then that behaviour will automatically put negative emotions into your mind. This will, no doubt reinforce a negative outlook of the world and your life. Bad habits and negative thinking have been proven to limit your creativity. Your body produces a hormone called cortisol which is released in response to stress. If you are in a dangerous situation, cortisol would normally be of help, (fight or flight response).

However, in our modern lives, we cannot fight or flight and thus we can't have this sentence hanging around on its own, lets try to realign. To avoid this, we have to change the way we look at various situations. By doing so, we are creating awareness and thus we are more connected to ourselves and to the world around us.

How to think positively? 1 Be grateful for anything good in your life 2. Write down positive thoughts (allows your brain to relive them) 3. Exercise or play (open any YouTube video exercise and do it at home for 10 minutes per day) 4. Meditate (you don’t have to be a guru to meditate. It simply means that you focus your thoughts) 5. Do a random act of kindness (helping others connects us to our community better) 6. Create positive environment (read or do something that inspires you) 7. Repeat this on a daily basis, BUT do not be harsh on yourself if you cannot do it at once. Take baby steps and be persistent. Remember, nobody can do it for you; you have to be the change you want to see. n

The Marsa Malaz Kempinski is the only Five Star Hotel on The Pearl and with its amazingly versatile Membership packages, one can easily while away a few hours, enjoy some fun on the beach, pamper yourself or burn some calories in their state-of-the-art gym. With so much to offer, QH explored a number of the benefits of this great deal.

Palatial Splendour So okay, for anyone who hasn’t seen the Marsa Malaz Kempinski, it is perhaps one of the most beautiful looking hotels in Qatar. It showcases the finest architecture, blended with traditional Arabian elements in all of it 281 luxurious rooms - including 69 suites, two Presidential suites and two Royal suites. Each spacious room provides the latest technology, along with personalised service from your private butler, catering to your every need 24 hours a day. Located on its own secluded island on The Pearl - Doha, the Marsa Malaz Kempinski is a sight to behold and as I approach I can tell that at least for today, luxury, fun and adventure will be in plentiful supply. Our day starts off with a warm greeting courtesy of the Assistant Recreational Manager - José, who explains the various membership packages available and then gives us a tour of the wonderful facilities and grounds.

The Play Room Firstly, José takes us to the play room where he explains that there are kid’s club attendants who can look after your little ones so that you can look after yourself. This convenient set up means you can take full advantage of everything the Marsa Malaz has to offer.

The Gymnasium The hallways are long and beautifully adorned with paintings as we approach the gym. The lighting is dim and relaxing and the changing rooms are well equipped with roomy showers and clean toilet facilities. We take a peek at the extensive and modern fitness club with separate female and mixed gym areas, two group class studios, wet relaxation lounges, steam rooms as well as a private room for one-onone training. Fitness instructors, we are told, are on hand to assist guests. Regularly scheduled fitness classes are performed by qualified instructors and are suitable for various levels of fitness.

Pool and Beach Club Adventures After taking a look around the gym, we are encouraged to go and relax at the pool whilst the Beach Club team get our paddle boarding gear ready. We do as told and for a half hour we splash about, all the while, receiving complimentary cold water and fresh wet towels scented with rose water. Set on a pristine stretch of private sand is the beach and a number of individual, gleaming outdoor pools. There is also a large whirlpool bath which we take a momentary dip in. There’s a pool for the little ones, which of course, is overlooked by lifeguards. Down by the beach you will find an array of motorised water sports activities, such as wakeboarding, waterskiing as well as banana and donut rides. For those looking to take things a little more gently, you can also find paddle boarding as mentioned, kayaking and of course you can always just have a good old fashioned swim too.

Words and images by Francesca Cruz

Machu Picchu remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911. QH contributor Francesca Cruz explored this modern wonder of the world as she got lost among the clouds of Peru.

T

he Lost City of the Incas is as mystical and awe-inspiring as you might envision it to be. A kingdom resting among massive mountain ranges, it was referred to by the Inca’s as an apus (spirit of the mountains), with its green steep hills, high up in a forest of waltzing clouds.

68

Unless you are hiking the Inca trail (which is a four-day trek with climbs, changes of weather and the affect of altitude on the body), you will most likely fly into Cusco and then take the 3 ½ hour train ride to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. Peak season is from July till August. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and see these sacred ruins when the vegetation is in full bloom, venture there October to April. It is considered the rainy season, but the weather in Machu Picchu is always varied due to its altitude. The weather shifts from a downpour to blistering hot and then cold in a matter of hours. Prepare your backpack with a light sweater, some sun block and even an umbrella. The weather is very unpredictable.

Pretty High Up I also recommend that before you even set off to this hermetical land crossed by the Urubamba River and ensconced in a great diversity of foliage, from orchids, ferns and even high palms - that you prepare for the altitude. The city of Cusco is 11,800 feet and Machu Picchu is 7,970 feet. By the time you arrive in Machu Picchu, your body should be acclimated from having landed in Cusco but be careful and take your time.

A Pill For The Hills The altitude can affect your breathing. It can cause headaches, dizziness, and even loss of appetite. They often advise to take Chlorophyll (either in capsule form or drops that you dilute in water) a week before your trip. This helps build your red blood cell count. You can also treat the altitude sickness with Diamox, or by purchasing

Sorojchi pills the second you land in the Cusco airport. You’ll find them in every pharmacy; the pills will run you about $20 for a pack of 20. It’s also important to stay very hydrated. Carry with you, and replenish your body often with plenty of water. Coca tea in the morning will help ward off headaches, but avoid drinking it after 4 p.m. because it will impair your sleep.

Your Digs For The Night When selecting a hotel in Cusco, do your research and make sure they provide oxygen on site. For hotel options that are modern & sophisticated and at the same time offer luxury & comfort, I recommend: Palacio del Inka, Belmond Palacio Nazarenas; and the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco.

Don't mind these friendly chaps

Taking The Scenic Route If you are taking the train, PeruRail runs the show. You can book round trip tickets online. It is a 3 and ½ hour scenic trip from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. It runs right alongside the Urubamba River with canyons and vegetation on both sides. Tickets for the train, and to enter Machu Picchu go quickly so make sure to reserve both with ample time. Seriously, book well ahead to avoid disappointment!

location, and Research has shown that the site’s tant structures, the orientation of its most impor on of was strongly influenced by the locati nearby holy mountains, or apus.

Take a train trip through the Andes

You’ll have to choose between four different train options with different prices. The Andean Explorer, the Expedition, the Vistadome and the Hiram Bingham. The first three include snacks and not much else other than the round trip train ride, but the last option—the Hiram Bingham (named after the explorer who discovered Machu Picchu) runs about $293.00 per person and includes the round trip, gourmet meals, bus transportation and entrance to the ruins. The Hiram Bingham is an excellent option. Imagine setting off on a train reminiscent of the Orient Express, with live music, delicious Peruvian food served by waiters who are dressed impeccably. Also, take into account that if you want to climb both Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu you’ll need a separate ticket for the latter and as I mentioned earlier, of course, you have to book in advance. The hike up to Machu Picchu is taxing on the body so I do recommend staying the night in the picturesque town of Aguas Calientes. There is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge at the gates of Machu Picchu with beautiful views. It’s small but luxurious and a bit on the pricey side. Another wonderful hotel option that is housed in a white casita with thatched roof is the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. The price includes a full breakfast buffet. The rooms come with fireplaces and the views from the resort of the local flora and fauna are soothing and very inviting to the explorer within all of us. You will delight in the beauty of Machu Picchu, no doubt feeling the energy of this mysterious place among the clouds. With this guide, you will be well prepared to set off on your exploration of this sacred Peruvian site as you walk in the very steps that Mr. Hiram Bingham did. n

Some operate only during particular months. • Check food options. Most yoga retreats offer organic meals which are purely vegetarian. • Check booking rates on caparison websites for everyday deals. • Check transport availability. Most retreats have an airport transfer service. • Come with an open mind. Yoga: comes from the Sanskrit word root “yuj”, which means "to join", in other words, to be one with your inner being.
