Doha In Souq Waqif, shoppers ramble through the maze of streets. The Souq is noted for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to dozens of restaurants and Shisha lounges. Although it dates back at least a hundred years, it was renovated in 2006 to conserve its traditional architectural style. Words by Jan Janssen Interview and selected images courtesy of Viva Press

Joanna Lumley is a natural born iconoclast whose off screen charisma has often brought her just as much attention as her acting roles. Fiercely independent, the British star has long been an outspoken advocate on behalf of social and political causes whilst earning the admiration of her fans as a fearless feminist. With Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie soon to hit the silver screen, QH caught up with the British icon to get the latest on her career, her bondless energy and passion for life.

S

he first became famous as a top model in London during the Swinging Sixties era and was known for appearing in fashion spreads shot by the legendary Patrick Lichfield as well as for being the muse of designer Jean Muir. Her career then took a quantum leap when she co-starred as the high-kicking martial arts expert Purdey on The New Avengers TV series which established her as one of Britain's top TV actresses. Her off-camera lifestyle made her the ideal choice to play Patsy, the outlandish, beverage-swigging ex-model in the cult British TV series, Absolutely Fabulous, which debuted in 1992 and ran for three seasons before enjoying a second run from 2001-05. Together with cast mate Jennifer Saunders (Edina, the chain-smoking PR agent), Lumley captured the public imagination with her outrageous behaviour. Now she's getting the chance to indulge in more irreverent mayhem in "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie," the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the massively popular sitcom which opens this summer. The Ab Fab movie finds Edina and Patsy on the run following an unfortunate incident at a London fashion launch party after Edina (aka Eddie) accidentally pushes Kate Moss off a balcony and into the Thames. "How bad could this be?" Edina asks her daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), who replies, "You have killed Kate Moss!" The dynamic female duo then flees to the comforts of the French Riviera, where "everyone's a criminal," a suitably decadent setting where they revel in more mayhem amid the yachts, palm tree, and Eurotrash

crowd. Directed by Mandie Fletcher, the film is based on a screenplay by series creator Saunders and also sees Jane Horrocks, and June Whitfield return to their familiar roles as Bubble and Mother, respectively. "My granddaughters, who are 11 and 12, will be at the film premiere," Lumley said. "They haven’t seen Ab Fab before, and my daughter-in-law is putting them through a crash course so they are not too shocked by their grandmother!"

Moss makes a brief appearance in the film, one of a myriad of 60-plus cameos which includes Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson, Joan Collins, Perez Hilton, Jerry Hall and Stella McCartney, who is particularly upset about Moss's untimely passing. Lumley, who turned 70 in May, has enjoyed a distinguished career as one of Britain's most popular TV stars. Apart from her work in Ab Fab and The New Avengers, she also made her mark in Sapphire & Steel, Sensitive Skin, Clatterford, and Agatha Christie's Marple. She enjoyed a small role in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street and will soon be seen in the dramatic tearjerker, Me Before You, starring Emilia Clarke. Born in India, where her father served in the 6th Gurkha Rifles, Lumley was educated at St Mary’s Convent School in Hastings and the Lucie Clayton Finishing School in London. She has one son, Jamie, a photographer, two grandchildren, and lives in south London with her husband of 25 years, conductor Stephen Barlow. With respect to turning 70, the still fabulous-looking Lumley had this to say: "Oh look, it doesn’t mean anything to me. All I have ever longed for was to get older – when I was 12 I wanted to be 18, when I was 30 I wanted to be 50. I just adore being 70. You lose your fear. There is an obsession with numbers. People say 70 is the new 60 and 60 is the new 20… Why don’t we all quieten down a bit and just get on with it?"

of The on-screen chemistry and antics red Saunders and Lumely has endea . them to people around the world

QH: Joanna, for people who may not know how your Absolutely Fabulous character, Patsy, came to be, can you fill us in? JL: Jennifer (Saunders), (collaborator) Ruby (Wax) and I invented Patsy's past and I furnished her with having been a model in the swinging 60s. Jennifer is 13 years younger than me, so she was a baby when all that was going on. Patsy and I are the same coin but I hope I'm the obverse side of her.

present two women hanging out and behaving badly. You'd never seen that on TV before and audiences just loved the spectacle of Patsy and Edina behaving in a very shallow and selfish way that eventually became the standard for our celebrity culture. Our show was ahead of its time in that sense and what we were treating as satire has become reality today. QH: Do Patsy and Edina feed off each other?

JL: Not much! I drink a fraction of what she does and I’m fatter than she is but I’m a bit like her. I don’t have her vicious language but I adore her. I knew girls like Patsy, though – Eurotrash figures who didn’t seem to belong anywhere but were always immaculately turned out and could be found in Saint-Tropez. You could never work out quite how they lived and Patsy was one of those.

JL: Yes, of course. They exist in a twisted symbiosis where they are constantly exacerbating each other's worst tendencies. They look at the world as their playground where they exploit anything they can find which enhances their own superficial self-image. It's the absurdity of their self-absorbed way of looking at the world which is really a reflection on our society and how our values have become distorted. You see many celebrities behaving the way Patsy and Edina do - people who only follow the latest trends and are obsessed with fame and the need to keep feeding their egos.

QH: What is the secret of the bond between Patsy and Edina?

QH: Apart from Patsy, which role has had the biggest impact on your career?

JL: They are life-long friends. They love and care for each other no matter what happens to them or the odd tiff between them. It's the kind of friendship that will last forever.

JL: Purdey in The New Avengers. After 26 episodes over two years, I never had to say: "I'm Joanna Lumley and I’ve done this and that," again. It opened doors for me. The show was seen in 128 countries. The impact of the hairstyle I wore and the show in general was immense. I’d been a Bond girl (she had a small role in In Her Majesty's Secret Service) and in Dracula films and Coronation Street, but I was always hunting for work. After The New Avengers, I never had to wait for work again.

QH: Is there any overlap between your own personality and Patsy's?

QH: What led you to get into acting? JL: I loved the chaos and insecurity of the profession. At the beginning I had a tough time convincing anyone I could do the job and in a perverse way I was drawn to the uncertainty. I always thought of acting as a way of leading a very unpredictable life. I don't like planning my life. I like the idea of not knowing what I'm going to be doing next year, or tomorrow! (Laughs) QH: Have you always seen yourself as a free-thinker, someone who believed in a lot of the ideas that came out of the sixties' counter-culture revolution? JL: I liked the sense of freedom and desire to change society that was part of that time. There really was this feeling that we were going to change the world and make it a better place to live in. Sadly, women are still fighting for equality and we're still trying to convince politicians to protect the environment and to get more and more people to reduce their carbon footprints. QH: What drives you?

QH: What do you think is behind the enduring public fascination with Ab Fab? JL: You have to remember that when we shot the first episode in 1991, it was a relatively radical concept to

JL: I believe in doing the right thing and being passionate about the way you engage with the world. There was an old hippie song in the Sixties that rather shocked me back then. It said, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you are with." I've rather taken it to heart now. I don't keep saying, "Oh, I wish I'd listened to soand-so, done this, said that." I suppose that's why

I fight for the things I believe in. If you love something with a passion, it must come from within you. You are what you do, and you get what you want. QH: What makes you happiest in life? JL: I love being with my husband and leading very full lives. One of my greatest pleasures is going to a great restaurant and having a long, romantic dinner together. I also love every chance I get to see my son Jamie and my granddaughters Alice and Emily. Very simpl stuff, really. QH: You've always stayed in absolutely fabulous shape and have long been a vegetarian. Are you also an exercise junkie? JL: I never exercise. I never go to the gym but I like rushing around doing housework or gardening. I wake up around 6:30 and I rarely have anything for breakfast except a cup of coffee. But I've always eaten very healthily and I try to walk a lot and run up the stairs. I never sit down and eat big meals - instead I like to have little snacks, maybe a yogurt or some nuts. And I never eat anything with a pulse....I always have a lot of energy. QH: You have always been known for your upbeat personality. How would you describe your outlook on life? JL: Being smiley and nice is what I do. It's my rule of thumb. I am always happy. I am Pollyanna. I’m the smiling, cheerful nightmare you beat with a bat to get out of your house. Every day I try to make life better for someone... Being kind to someone or helping someone, or sending off a small cheque for £10 or something....I like being positive.. n

Party Happenings Words by Antony D. Antoniou Selected photography by Jessie Palanca

We kick back and relax at Nobu in Four Seasons Hotel Doha for a night of surprises, both culinary and visual. From the main dining room to the rooftop lounge, QH discovers all seven of the stylish entertaining spaces in Qatar’s top Japanese restaurant/lounge.

Y

ou know you are in for a treat when you see people queuing up outside Nobu a half an hour before opening time. This is my first visit and like most, I can’t help but be wowed with the architectural marvel that stands before me. Perched delicately at the edge of the private Four Seasons marina, overlooking the Arabian Gulf, Nobu resembles some kind of space craft that is resting after a long intergalactic journey. However, I have it dutifully explained to me that in fact, its look is inspired by that of a sea shell. The 26,000 square-foot Nobu Doha is one of the largest in the brand’s portfolio. As we enter, we take

the elevator to the first floor and are immediately overwhelmed by what is very clearly a masterpiece in restaurant and lounge design. Being the son of a restaurateur, I naturally analyse any eatery or lounge I walk into, looking for innovations and clever or interesting decor. I am happily surprised by the modern, chic interiors and the sensory overload that is, Nobu. This unique space is a luxurious 134-seat interior dining area, with two exclusive private dining rooms, a 10-seat sushi counter, a sophisticated White Pearl Bar & Lounge, a stylish Black Pearl Bar & Lounge, and a one-of-a-kind, 38-seat swirling rooftop lounge that encompasses both indoor and outdoor seating options. We take a seat at the White Pearl Bar & Lounge with what is simply a stunning view of the mighty Arabian sun as it succumbs to the starry night. The music fills the air with modern beats from the resident DJ as conversations buzz on around me. The menu highlights Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s signature new-style Japanese fare and also showcases entirely new dishes created with the region’s local ingredients. We go for the Nobu style tapas menu and order an array of delightful dishes packed with flavour and thought..

The Sashimi Salad Skewers are fresh and wonderfully balanced with a sweat garnish, next to arrive is the Oyster Shooters, (kind of gimmicky) but at the same time very enjoyable, they are presented in shot glasses and go down pretty much in one. Next to arrive is the Black Cod Butter Lettuce which we unanimously agree is our dish of the night. The flaky texture of the cod which is wrapped in mini lettuce leaves with a sweet sauce that makes us wish we ordered more. Another personal favourite is the Rock Shrimp Tempura with Creamy Spicy Sauce. We ordered a second helping but that too disappeared quicker than we had wished. A number of the other dishes we ordered were also very good to exceptional, including the Pan Seared Scallops with Shichimi Crust, the Grilled Umami Chicken Wings with Miso Salt and the Beef Tenderloin Skewers with Honey Anticucho. A lot of the servings we tried were pretty small but finger food usually is. If you’re smart and speak to the friendly staff you can certainly fill your belly without breaking the bank. Bigger food options are also available from the main menu.

Stunning views of Doha's cityscape from the roof top

After the eating you may want to take things up a notch with a few classy beverages. As you scale each floor, the more of a lounge environment awaits. Nobu is a versatile eatery and lounge with something for everyone. It certainly inspires and elevates the city’s culinary scene and also acts as a great hang out spot with one of the better lounges and outdoor terraces in town. n NOBU DOHA

Nawaal's incredible spirit and captivating personality has made her a bit of a local star

Progress Through

Understanding Words and images by Rabi’ah M.

Nawaal Akram is a member of the Qatar Paralympic Committee and also a founder of Muscular Dystrophy Qatar. She is a comedian who is also a wheelchair bound model. Nawaal was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at a young age, however, this lady hasn’t let that stop her, QH was keen to meet her and found out more about this very motivated and inspiring young woman. 28 QH July 2016 - FINAL.indd 28

6/26/16 09:11

Her parents considered taking legal action against the school, but in the end they didn’t. "There was a great deal of difficulty when it came to receiving the necessary support to seek access to a proper education", Nawaal recalls. However, whilst searching for a solution, she found out that Arabic schools in Qatar were willing to provide her the necessary facilities for he needs, but since she only spoke English this was not an option either. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive neuromuscular disorder which results in muscle degeneration so Nawaal cannot walk; the condition also affects her arms, lungs and heart. She recalls how she lost her ability to walk when she was just 12 years old and that since then, she has been using a wheelchair. Despite her strong will power to remain independent, she does admit it is no longer easy, “I used to be independent enough to get myself dressed and go out with no extra assistance, but it is no longer the same. The condition has become worse and I have become weaker. Now I almost require help with everything. I am not always so forthcoming in accepting the fact that I require someone’s help, I want me to be as independent as possible.” She goes on to explain that the kind of support she has received in Qatar has been fantastic in terms of the various projects that she has been involved in. For instance, her first fashion shoot as a model was a great experience that she recalls with a smile. “I received tremendous support from the online and offline community in Qatar, it was really heart-warming.”

N

awaal Akram has gained fame for promoting awareness about Duchenne muscular dystrophy here in Qatar, a rare condition she suffers from. Despite her daily struggles, she has channelled her energy in a positive way. Among other things Nawaal works to improve the welfare of the physically disabled in the region. In Qatar, Nawaal Akram is not only a well known figure for her persistent campaigning for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy but also for her special talent as a comedian and promoting awareness about people with disabilities. Born in Pakistan, Nawaal was brought up between Qatar and the U.A.E. which she describes as “her two homes”. She explains that her educational background is incomplete due to the lack of proper educational facilities available at her school. “When it comes to my studies, I went to school until the age of 10. I attended a British curriculum; it was an international school in Qatar. At one stage and to my immense sadness they told my parents that I could no longer attend when I was only 10 years old. The teachers couldn’t handle my needs because they were unable to provide the proper provisions necessary for me to study.”

Being a comedian is something Nawaal considers pivotal to her life, she explains how from a young age, she learned to joke about things that people normally consider to be serious. In fact, she admits that it was through comedy that she was able to cope with everything that happened to her. It was only in 2015 when she started performing at local universities and other events in Qatar that her confidence began to blossom. Her favourite comedians are Kevin Hart and Russell Peters. Through comedy she has found her voice and this brings her a great amount of joy, but also a way to discuss important and highlight issues. People like Nawaal are truly inspirational; she does not allow her physical disabilities to get the better of her, in fact she, like many disabled people use it as a way to inspire others and to raise awareness. However, Nawaal isn’t naive and says that the stigma associated with disabilities is still quite prevalent. Even though Qatari society has now opened its arms to accommodate such individuals, there is still a great deal of work that needs to be done in order replace stigma with love and understanding. Nawaal’s main focus now is to promote disability issues so that in the future disabled people can gain access to education regardless of their nationality and disability, something that she herself was denied. n

ARTS & CULTURE

Words by Rubina Singh Images courtesy of Qatar Museums

On show from 22nd May until 11th September 2016, the installation, entitled Red/Red, is on view in Mathaf’s Project Space. Dealing with themes of fading identities and loss of tradition, the show is a thought provoking journey into the mountainous Caucasus region straddling both Asia and Europe. QH went for a visit to find out more. “The great end of all art is to make an impression on the imagination and the feeling” said Sir Joshua Reynolds, a statement that seems very fitting in relation to the work of Turkish artist Aslı Çavusoglu whose artwork is currently. Curated by Laura Barlow, this is the first presentation at Mathaf of ‘Red’, following its production for the 14th Istanbul Biennial, SALTWATER: A Theory of Thought Forms, (2015), with support from Qatar Museums.

Çavusoglu focuses on this dying tradition for the making of this rare red pigment

Aslı Çavusoglu’s work utilizes different media to investigate silenced histories. Articulated through various media forms these investigations revisit key moments in an effort to locate the relationship between rupture and continuity as consciousness and how related identities are constructed, and reconstructed. Her search based practice explores the production and interpretation of cultural and ecological archaeologies and social histories, reflecting the artists’ strong socialist temperament. Working in video, drawing, and installation, Çavusoglu explores the conditions and histories

30 QH July 2016 - FINAL.indd 30

6/26/16 09:11

The Armenian cochineal is one of the ancient natural sources of red e dye in the Middle East and Europ

of artistic and cultural production, and traditions of display. Aslı Çavusoglu's Red exhibition the physicality of a colour to tell a story of coexistence and communality. Delicate drawings are made on worn papers and handmade notebooks in two red inks: Armenian red, extracted from the endangered Armenian cochineal insect, and Turkish red, now used in the national flag. As the patterns modernise from floral to geometric shapes, the resilience of each pigment as it transforms over time is also reflected. In the work, the Turkish red holds its colour while the Armenian fades, narrating the changing physical and allegorical links to national culture, identity, and memory. Çavusoglu studied Armenian cochineal, from its earliest extraction in the 7th century BC to its use in manuscripts, or “miniature paintings”, to document Armenian culture and life. The pigment comes from a carminic acid found in the “Ararat” or Armenian cochineal insect living in the roots of the Aeluropus

littoralis plant. This plant is indigenous to the Aras (Araks) River valley, which forms the natural border between Turkey and Armenia. On the Turkish side of the river, knowledge of how to produce Armenian cochineal red has been lost since 1915, while on the Armenian side the plant and insect are threatened by extinction due to 20th century industrialisation. The work explores this pigment’s disappearance, speaking to the political and ecological histories of this region. Red advocates for the protection of the delicate social and organic systems of the Aras valley – human, plant, and animal life – to support a communally protected ecosystem and shared knowledge of production that will preserve the recording of its collective past, present and future existence. The artist views her work as a proposal for a model of co-existence for the inhabitants of the region to protect and develop the natural ecosystem that produces the beautiful red pigment. Presenting her work at the opening of her installation, the Çavusoglu gave a public talk at Mathaf on May 22nd as part of the Mathaf Talk series. Commenting on the installation, Abdellah Karroum, Director of

Walking on Sunshine Words by Dawn Gibson

Are you getting enough Vitamin D? Qatar’s sizzling summers mean many of us are missing out on this essential nutrient, which is vital for keeping bones healthy.

I

t’s that time of year again – when we travel from our air-conditioned home in our airconditioned car to our air-conditioned office, then back again. Step outside and face that blazing sun? Not likely. The overwhelming summer temperatures in Qatar can be hard to explain to friends from countries with milder climes, but anyone who has been here longer than a few months is well aware how difficult it can be to do anything outdoors when the Gulf sun is in its full glory. One significant side effect of the long Gulf summers is that many of us are at high risk of becoming deficient in Vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin, with potentially serious health consequences. So, do you know if you are in a high risk category? And, if so, what can you do about it?

when ultraviolet B rays (UVB) from the sun touch the skin. You cannot make vitamin D from sitting indoors by a sunny window because the UVB rays needed for the process can’t penetrate the glass. Vitamin D is present in a small number of foods, including fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, fish liver oils, beef liver, cheese and eggs. It is added to some processed foods such as cereals, spreads and powdered milk, but the quantity can vary and may only be tiny. A lack of the nutrient can lead to rickets in children, a disease characterized by soft bones and skeletal deformities, as well as bone pain and tenderness in adults. There is increasing evidence that Vitamin D may play a role in the prevention of several serious diseases, including colon, prostate and breast cancer; type 1 and type 2 diabetes; high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis.

At Risk in Qatar Recent research in Qatar reveals some disturbing findings: Vitamin D deficiency is not just a problem; it is the norm for large sections of the population, particularly people who spend a lot of time indoors and are covered when venturing out.

Vitamin D helps to regulate calcium and phosphate in the body, ensuring bones and teeth remain healthy.

A 2010 study of female students at Qatar University found more than half had a severe vitamin D deficiency, and just three per cent were getting an optimal level.

We get most of our requirement from the effect of sunlight on our skin: the vitamin is made by our body

This followed on from a 2008 study of 340 healthcare workers at Hamad Medical Corporation,

What is Vitamin D?

which found just five per cent of men tested and two per cent of women had good levels of Vitamin D. Overall, medical experts advise that those most at risk are: • pregnant and breastfeeding women • babies and young children under the age of five • people aged 65 and over • people who have darker skin • people who are not exposed to much sun – such as people who cover up their skin when outdoors, or those who are indoors for long periods

Staying Healthy Whilst direct sun exposure is the solution to deficiency, it isn’t quite that simple. For a start, the amount of time you need to spend in the sun to make enough Vitamin D is different for each individual and has to be balanced against the risk of skin cancer. Dr Elham Sharif of the Department of Health Sciences at Qatar University (QU), one of the authors of the QU student survey mentioned above, advises that people need to expose their legs and arms to the sun (without sunblock) for up to 15 minutes a day, three times a week. In addition, the UK Health Department advises that people in at-risk groups, including pregnant women, as well as babies and young children aged six months to five years, should take a daily supplement of Vitamin D. If in doubt, discuss it with your doctor. n

Words by Jacqueline Bodnar

These days, it’s hard not to notice all the “green living” information around us. People in large numbers are starting to pay more attention to how they can lessen their impact on the planet. For this trend to continue children must be educated from a young age about the importance of protecting the planet.

K

ids usually have an open mind about such issues, they are naturally curious, ready to learn and be involved in things especially if they think they are doing something good or helping out. Teaching children to minimize their carbon footprint, or the amount of environmental damage that they cause, is easy when it becomes a family affair.

Green Kids Become Green Adults “Kids are never too young to learn about the environment around them and their role (small or large) in protecting it,” says Sara Snow, a green-living expert and host of Discovery Health’s

“Get Fresh with Sara Snow” programme. “The messages you teach them at that early age don't have to be heavy or scary; instead, make it happy and exciting that they get to help keep the earth clean.” As Snow explains, teaching children how to care for the environment doesn’t have to be boring, and teaching them about being eco-conscious can have lasting results, as it did with her. “When I was a child, I learned many lessons about low-impact living,” she says. “I don't remember ever being preached to; a love of nature which began all those years ago has never left me.”

6/26/16 09:12

Recycling is becoming a family affair

Low-impact living doesn’t mean that families have to give up many of the things they are used to. Rather, it’s about making small changes here and there that, in the end, add up to big results. Some simple things that parents can do to teach children green living habits include:

Saving water Not leaving the water running while brushing teeth is important because it saves gallons of water at a time, and that leads to big savings over the course of a year. Water-saving awareness can be applied to other areas, as well, such as taking showers, using the hose, washing hands, etc. The goal is to use the least amount of water possible while still getting the job done.

Recycling For families, making the effort to recycle is one of the most important things they can do to help live a green lifestyle. Curb side recycling is offered by most cities, and kids make great sorters. They can also learn to recycle toys and clothing that they no longer need. Those items can be sold or donated to charities. Purchasing recycled products is also a good move. Shopping for items at thrift stores usually brings money-saving benefits, in addition to the good it does by preserving resources.

Reusing Throughout every house in America, loads of items can be found that can be reused to save on

resources. Possibilities include teaching kids to use cloth napkins instead of paper ones, opting for reusable dishes over disposable, and using a cloth instead of paper towels to clean up spills or messes. Families can also make an effort to reuse items before those items are sent to the recycling bin, such as using papers and magazines for drawing, painting, or art projects. Additionally, using reusable cloth bags at the grocery store sets a good example that can become a lifelong habit as kids grow.

and teach them how their food comes from it,” says Snow. “Encourage them to splash in a clear, cool lake or stream, and show them what happens when it gets dirtied up with trash. Help them see shapes in clouds, and roll down hills of green grass. Get them to enjoy the earth and, as they grow, they'll want to find new and better ways to protect it.” n

Reduce By reducing the total resources that a family uses will make a big impact on the environment. Family members can do this by skipping the single-serve snacks and drinks, opting for larger-size packages that can be divided up at home for storage in reusable containers or cups. Reductions can also be made in the amount of driving a family does, by opting to walk, bike, or carpool. Another important thing to reduce is the amount of meat that the family eats.

Let Them Lead “As kids grow, let them find their own chosen ways of protecting the environment. When they're young, teach them about the earth and their connection to it. Let them dig their hands in the soil,

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Perseverance brings rewards

A Fruitful Year Words by Dr. Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College Images courtesy of Doha College

Our school gave the larger community the now traditional sporting boost by organising the Doha College 5K and 10K Run in December 2015.

Steering the great ship that is Doha College, has revealed many changes and exciting events. We take a look at the key highlights from an amazing year.

In April this year, we marked the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. From the various celebratory events, the Romeo and Juliet Drama Production, staged with a twist that Shakespeare himself may not quite recognise stood out. Over 100 students were involved in a professional production worthy of the West End. No doublets, ruffs or feathered caps were in sight as performers took to skateboards and roller skates, and sang tunes from the Spice Girls, the Beatles, Elvis, new romantics and punk rock.

B

etween formulating a new Development Plan, introducing the concept of high-performance learning and revisiting our vision, I am thankful that the adventure I embarked on has proven as inspiring and rewarding as I had hoped. Doha College has always been strong on sports, and this year was no different. We participated in over 400 fixtures that included 58 different leagues and tournaments, and two sports exchanges with schools from Dubai. Of these 58 tournaments/ leagues, DC won 32. Some of the best were the Clean Sweeps in the Basketball and Netball leagues, and winning all the Rounders tournaments. DC Primary sent a squad of 36 children to the Bahrain BSME Games 2016 to compete against 10 other schools from across the Middle East. After battling it out in Swimming, Football, Netball, Basketball and Athletics, Doha College came in 2nd place overall.

Tom Ayling, our Deputy Head Boy, was chosen at just 17 to represent Qatar at the International Rugby 7s tournament in February. Aged just 14, Jakub Hrinda in Year 11 made his first mark on the amateur golfing world by winning the 2015 Qatar Open Masters.

As the British nation celebrated the momentous occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday, Doha College was invited to be featured in an official commemorative album “The Queen at 90” presented to HM The Queen at her official birthday celebrations in Windsor castle. Only three other schools worldwide shared this honour. The Arts Department have continued to showcase the creativity and originality of our students, which culminated with the Annual Art Exhibition held in May. The event showcased student work covering all the creative arts from Fine Art, Photography, Digital Media, Product and Fashion Design. Mathematics is an especially successful field for Doha College, and this has been proven once again by the achievements of a number of students. Michael Young took part this year in three competitions, achieved both ‘Gold’ and ‘Best in School’ certificates, and qualified for the prestigious British Mathematical Olympiad and The University of Waterloo’s Euclid. He has been offered a place at Warwick University to read Mathematics next year.

DC entered two teams in the annual Pi Day Competition run by the Carnegie Mellon University, and they competed against another 66 teams taking part with schools from all over Qatar. Both teams got through to the final and were awarded trophies for 3rd and 4th place. A special mention is due to Ishwar Karthik, a talented Year 7 mathematician who took part in the Caley Contest organised by the University of Waterloo, Canada. Ishwar, aged just 11, already has a GCSE in Mathematics, attained the highest score for this Year 10 contest. Three exceptional musical talents from Doha College were among the first QMA students to perform as soloists alongside the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Tricia Ng, Davis Sztankov and Sebastian Tia played violin, horn and piano to a mesmerised audience at the QNCC, thus writing yet more DC history. The Awards Ceremony held in June recognised the highest achieving students of Doha College for their academic successes and their charitable undertakings throughout the year. The Outstanding Student Award went this year to our Head Boy Thushan Puhalendran; he was chosen for being on track for the highest marks in five A levels, and he has been accepted into Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton and Yale to further his studies. He also achieved 100% in six of his recent AS level papers, he was Director of MUN 2015/16, and formed part of the senior debating team that won the QSDL Nationals 2016. As impressive as these accolades are, I am certain that the next academic year will also bring plenty more surprises and successes in a journey that I invite you to be part of. n

FOOD & DINING

Made in

China Words by Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca

Hakkasan has been serving upscale Chinese fare to Doha’s dinners for a number of years now; the QH team heard about their exquisite Saturday lunch menu and simply had to grab a bite. This foody oasis located at the St. Regis Doha is a must for those with a fondness for top Asian cuisine.

H

akkasan is simply a stylish Far East delight. From the moment we enter, we are impressed by the traditional Chinese motifs which are tastefully fused with modern aesthetics.

In contrast to the brilliant Arabian sun outside, Hakkasan is a retreat from the heat with its dimly lit interior that transports your mind to milder climes.

far our favourite though; it has a certain kick to it, probably the liberal splashing of vinegar which gives the soup a refreshing edge.

With its beautifully sculpted dark wood partitions, each table feels like a world unto itself. The QH team takes a seat. Soon after, the waiter arrives and very helpfully explains the Saturday menu, his advice is most welcome because we are absolutely starving and just wana get on with the eating.

Next to arrive are the ‘Small eat’ snacks, we order the amazing Chef’s selection steamed dim sum, which are out of this world. This dish lasts all of ten seconds as everyone scoffs up the delicate and beautifully displayed items within the rustic bamboo steamer.

The Saturday lunch menu is short and simple with three soup choices available for starters. The ‘Small eat’ as it’s called, varies week by week. The mains consist of six succulent meal options, whilst dessert is a selection of ice cream or cool sorbet offerings. We begin with the hot and sour with chicken, the vegetable hot and sour soup and the crab and sweet corn supreme soup. All of which are generously portioned and yummy. The hot and sour soup is by

Each week a new treat is served from the ‘Small eat’ section of the menu. Next, we try the crispy duck rolls which are just perfect, not too dry and not too moist; the sweet soybean paste dip is richer than standard versions and helps make the snack go down easily. For the mains, we order pretty much everything. The wok-fry prawns in spicy Assam sauce are first to greet our gurning mouths. Perhaps the most delicious of the mains, the portion wasn’t plentiful but there were plenty of other dishes still to come.

offerings. They consist of lemon, strawberry and apple. The ice cream flavours on offer include coffee and green tea with the latter being some of the nicest I have tried recently.

After we polish off the last of the prawns we turn our attention to the Mongolian style stir-fry rib eye beef and the Sanpei chicken clay pot with spring onion, dry chili and sweet basil. Both of which are simply delicious, the meat in both dishes is ridiculously tender, I have no idea how they made it that soft but I’m not complaining. Good work Hakkasan. Tofu, aubergine and shiitake mushroom clay pot in chilli black bean sauce is a nice alternative from the rest of the meat dishes and is quickly mopped up by the QH team. With its rich, dark and earthy sauce, this is a dish I would certainly order again. The seasonal vegetables come next and are lathered in yet another intense, rich dark, ever so slightly spicy sauce and go well with the Edamame egg fried rice. All that remains now is the desserts, a sense of relief washes over us as we tuck into the cold sorbet

Seasonal vegetables delights

This was my second time to Hakkasan and once again they delivered an exceptional set menu that makes Saturday lunches just that extra bit more exciting and rewarding. With some of the best Asian fare in Doha and an upscale, stylish atmosphere, Hakkasan is truly worth the trip. n TASTE OF HAKKASAN SATURDAY LUNCH MENU Location: The St. Regis, West Bay Timings: From 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Last order 3:30 p.m. Meal prices: • Inclusive of unlimited water, soft drinks and Chinese tea QR 168 per person • Inclusive of unlimited water, soft drinks, Chinese tea and half bottle of grapes QR 278 per person Licensed: Yes Smoking: Yes Contact Info: Call 4446 0170

Time Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Photography by Jessie Palanca

For all you meat lovers out there, QH has you covered this month. We were lucky enough to take a trip to Prime steak house located in the Intercontinental Doha the City Hotel for some simply sublime carnivorous fare.

A stylish interior awaits hunger dinners

W

hat if I asked you to tell me where the best steak house in the world is located? Well, the good news is that you can find this acclaimed establishment right here in Doha, Qatar. The ultimate steakhouse destination for the discerning steak connoisseur is lead by Chef Emmanuel Pauliat. Prime has been in Doha since 2012. Having just recently won the World Luxury Restaurant Awards 2016, this award winning steak house has many fans not only here in Doha but around the globe. It’s a beautiful mild evening when the QH team arrives at Prime to experience their world renowned fare. We are greeted by Hostess Darell, who guides us through the restaurant and to our table for the night. The romantic décor makes me feel relaxed. Dim lighting, beautiful wood patterning on the walls and refined table settings are all the signs I need to know that I am in a top-notch steak house. The restaurant is open plan; however dinners still have an option to dine privately. We are lucky as Darell takes us to the left side of the restaurant and opens a door, then she informs us that we have a private table for the evening. Smiles all round! A bread basket is served along with three choices of signature Prime butters. (plain, herb and paprika). Our waiter, Sandesh, politely asks if we are ready to start, we all nod eagerly in unison. For our appetisers, we start with the quinoa and lobster salad, which has small leaves, grapefruit and lobster bisque dressing. It’s fresh and well balanced with some clever seasoning, it’s absolutely fabulous. The Prime signature short ribs arrive next. Restaurant General Manager, Ally Hossenbux explains to us that we are about to try 36 hour slowcooked short ribs with crispy butternut and Wasabi

spinach sauce. The texture and mixture of flavours is absolutely unique. Intelligent, refined and delightful. It’s the kind of dish that I could quite easily become addicted to. I have to admit that it’s my personal favourite of the night.

The Mains Asif, the supervisor approaches our table with a box in his hands. He opens it and inside there is a beautiful collection of handmade knives from Japan, France and England. The French knives are Laguiole which are best used for tenderloin. The Robert Welsh knives are from England and perfect for striploin. The Tamahagane knives from Japan are for Rib-eyes. This attention to detail is what makes all the difference. I choose the new Laguiole knife on offer. After a minute or so, our mains arrive in the form of the Prime Degustation Platter - this delightful plate is beef grilled tenderloin; braised short ribs and pan seared Wagyu striploin served with truffle potato and buttered asparagus. We also receive a variety of sauces and dips such as veal jus, peppercorn and mushroom sauce. The soft and tasty garlic mash potato and creamy spinach compliments the dish and it’s all gone in a flash. By the end of the night, I felt like some kind of steak expert, I sampled steaks from across the world. I learnt that how steak is treated and prepared makes all the difference. It was a fantastic, informative meaty journey that I certainly won’t forget. Just when we all think we’re done; we are surprised with a specially prepared shared plate that had a little sample of all the deserts offered by Prime. It had brownies, citrus meringue cheese cake, thyme crème bruleé, sweet and sour melting sphere, and popcorn panacotta with caramel sauce.

Creative presentations as nice as the tastes

I’m felt like a child with a magical world of sweets right in front of my eyes. Of course, all samples are devoured within seconds. The brownies are my favourite, not too sweet and just the right amount of crumbliness, if you know what I mean. After this fantastic evening, I feel obliged to thank the team at Prime. Now I understand why they are an award winning Steak house. It’s important to know that the menu changes every six months. To try the dishes I mentioned, I recommend you visit Prime sharpish! If you are looking for a unique experience, Prime is your meaty destination of choice in Qatar. n PRIME STEAK HOUSE Location: 1st floor, Intercontinental Doha The City Timings: 6:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m. Average Meal Price: • QR 300 – main course • QR 60 – dessert Licensed: Yes Smoking: Yes Contact info: 4015-8888

Cathy Rodrigues and her two hungry boys

QH: Describe the quality of the service.

Fly away on a magical culinary experience at Flying Carpet

Word Of Mouth

CR: The staff of the restaurant were very good, welcoming and attentive. They would come and enquire as to whether we needed anything. Everything was well catered for. The staff were well dressed and always sporting a smile– in particular a lady called Lea. QH: Would you go back? Why/why not? CR: Yes, I would go back to the restaurant to try out their other buffet themed nights which I hear are also quite impressive. QH: Favourite thing about the restaurant? CR: I was impressed with their hospitality; they made sure that we were perfectly content throughout the entire meal. The taste was great, the ingredients were excellent, and I enjoyed everything I put on my plate. QH: Least favourite thing about the restaurant? CR: Initially finding the right entrance to the restaurant was tricky; it looked more like a maze to me.

QH: Were the prices reasonable?

This column is part of a monthly contest where we send one of our readers to experience a meal in a restaurant. It’s our way of giving the community a voice in our pages. This month Cathy Rodrigues samples the Arab delicacies at Flying Carpet restaurant at the Torch Doha Hotel. Here is her review. QH: What did you order? CR: Flying Carpets is an all-day dining restaurant combining modern design with live cooking international cuisine. Located on the mezzanine, it has a buffet menu with an exclusive selection of Sushi, Italian Antipasti and seafood along with an Asian Fusion station which serves food every Saturday.

CR: The Saturday Torch buffet prices were reasonable and worth the food selection on offer, ambiance and view. Included in the price is; still water, selected soft drinks and chilled juices QR 220. Served from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Special rate for children under 12 at only QR 98. QH: Describe the ambiance. CR: The ambiance reminds me of the Arabian Nights stories. There is an array of flying carpets suspended from the ceilings; the interior decorations, luscious curtains to the colourful lanterns, were all spectacular. QH: Describe the quality of the food. CR: The Torch buffet on Saturdays showcased a wide range of food selections starting from different kinds of Salads (I particularly loved the crab salad and spicy chickpea) to the seafood chowder and lentil soup. The mains included tempura, pizzas, tandoori, kebab, biryani, pasta and much more. The quality and taste of the food is very good but not particularly different or unique. The dishes are displayed in an impressive manner and are cooked fresh, right in front of you.

QH: Was there a special touch or flair to the experience? CR: The welcome drink was a nice touch; it was cranberry with pine nuts and was very refreshing. There are also some very impressive chocolate sculptures on display which added to the luxurious nature of the dessert selection. There is a children’s corner which had ice cream, pop corns, crepes and chocolate fountains (a personal favourite for my little boys). I loved the fact that the Chef in charge was going on his rounds, checking the food and also interacting with the customers, recommending dishes and he gave me an overview on what to expect from Ramadan Iftars and Suhoors. QH: Could the overall experience be improved? If so, how? CR: The overall experience was definitely delightful and it’s a great place for families with children too. n Buffet Themed Nights • Tuesday: Asian Nights • Wednesday: Latino and Italian night • Thursday: Seafood night • Friday: Arabic night

I

n May, the 19-year-old forward joined Villarreal CF (Club de Futbol) from Belgian side Eupen, the club purchased in 2012 by the Aspire Academy, specifically to aid the development of the best young Qatari talent in the European arena.

This plan certainly seems to have worked for Afif, as his prodigious performances for Eupen have seen him move from the fairly modest Belgian league (ranked 9th in Europe by UEFA) to La Liga. The forward’s eight goals from 25 league appearances last season helped push Eupen to promotion in the Belgian top flight, departing for Iberia having left, rather than having received, a leaving present. While the English Premiership might be the richest European league, and certainly the highestprofile league in the world, in purely technical terms it’s ranked third by UEFA, behind Germany in second, and well behind Spain in first place. Where better could Afif develop his skills and experience? It should be noted that not only is Afif still just a teenager, he previously spent three years in Spain (two years at Sevilla, one year at his new employers) as part of those respective clubs’ youth systems – so he knows the territory, and also speaks Spanish. As of next season therefore, Qatar will have one of its international players plying his trade in the best-technical league on Earth. This is obviously great for him on a personal level, but it’s also great news for Qatari football. Why? Afif’s presence at club level will help raise the profile of the national side – and even Qatar itself. This is not an unrealistic claim. Villarreal finished fourth in La Liga last year which means they will enter the Champions League next season at the final qualification stage. Should they make it into the competition proper, Afif will be the first Qatari player to grace the ‘beautiful game’s’ premier club competition.

Words and selected images by John Hunt

Qatar international footballer Akram Afif has made history by becoming the first Qatar-born player ever to sign a permanent contract with a La Liga side – the top tier of Spanish football. QH took a look at this significant summer transfer and what it means for Qatari football.

In Europe, even people that really know their football would struggle to name a single Qatari player – but this is set to change. Afif’s arrival at a top side in a top-quality league is going to show that Qatar is capable of producing top-class talent. It’s also my belief that Afif’s status as a pioneer is going to lend credence to Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup in 2022. Afif, however, is but one man. I’ve oft opined in these pages of the need to get Qatari players playing abroad so as to aid player development in the same way as has been the case for Afif.

Madrigal Stadium, Villareal City, Spain

In 2005-06, they were Champions League semi-finalists, and they have also been UEFA Cup/ Europa League semi-finalists on three occasions, including in the season just past. Villarreal are the epitome of a well-run, medium-sized club. The question, of course, is how their manager – Marcelino García Toral – sees Afif fitting into his side. The latter is only 19, so he may be spending some time in the reserves, on the bench, or hopefully fired straight into first team action. Who knows? What we can say with certainty is that it’s not only the diehards of El Madrigal who will observe their new acquisition with interest – the Qatar Football Association and everyone who follows the fortunes of ‘The Maroons’ will also be watching. n

May 8, 2016 - Afif signs permanent deal with Villareal, a proud day for the Qatari forward

I ask you this: would Afif have been able to secure a move to Villarreal directly from the Qatar Stars League, without the youth training in Spain and his successful year at Eupen? I suspect not. The QSL is still a work in progress.

Taking care of business

Qatar is most likely not going to win the 2022 World Cup. Getting out of their group would be seen as success. So whilst Afif is a pioneer, the hope is that he will also open the door for others to follow.

The ‘Yellow Submarine’ Villarreal CF hail from the town of the same name in the Valencia region of eastern Spain. They are nicknamed the ‘Yellow Submarine’ due to their all-yellow home kit, and play at the 25,000-capacity Estadio El Madrigal. The club itself could be described as one which regularly ‘punches above its weight’, whose achievements, especially recently, belie its compact size. In season 2007-08 for example, Villarreal achieved their best ever league finish – runners up to champions Real Madrid, but a hefty 10 points ahead of mighty Barcelona in third.

Words and images courtesy of Simon Jones

For those of you who may be considering skydiving but haven’t yet summoned the courage to do so, don’t fret, QH sent along Simon Jones to take the plunge with the guys from Skydive Qatar.

O

ne lazy afternoon, I was on my phone and I saw an advert on Facebook for “Skydive Qatar” and thought to myself why not. So I sent out a group whatsapp message to about 20 of my friends to see if anyone was up for it. In the back of my mind I thought no one would actually say yes, but to my surprise one of my friends wanted to do it, he was super keen, so there was no backing out now!

We found out that all jumps took place from Al Khor Airport, so we decided to book for a Saturday morning jump. I was a little bit nervous on Friday evening, nothing too serious though; I kind of put it to the back of my mind and thought I would deal with it in the morning. On Saturday my buddy came to pick me up and off we drove to Al Khor. When we got to Al Khor it was really windy. One of the instructors told us there was a pretty high chance the jump was going to be cancelled due to the strong winds. Having geared myself up for the jump that morning I really wanted to do it, however when throwing yourself out of a plane at 13000 feet, safety takes priority over everything, so alas, as predicted, the jump was cancelled. We had to reschedule, so we arranged a midweek jump as we both had some days off to use. On Monday morning we went back to

Al Khor. There was pretty much zero wind, the jump was happening. We hung around in the jump centre for a bit, teasing one another about who was more nervous and then our instructors arrived. The instructors gave us the run down on how the jump would go; there wasn’t much that we had to do. A harness was strapped to the jumper and then the instructor would attach himself to the harness once in the plane. Then the instructor would be the one who pulled the parachute, after free falling for about 2.5k! We familiarized ourselves with the kit and then made our way to the plane. I had a bit of a chat with my instructor - Graham on the way up. I took the chance to double check that he had done this before (a bit late now I hear you saying); thankfully he had over 9000 jumps under his belt, so that was reassuring.

62 QH July 2016 - FINAL.indd 62

6/26/16 09:13

Accompanying us were about 10 solo jumpers on the flight. We circled up to 13000 feet, on the way up the instructor fastened himself to me and once again went through how it was going to work. Up until this point everything was quite relaxed, a slow flight up in the air, taking in the views of Al Khor and the beach, all the while, I was trying not to think about how high up we were going. We hit 13000 feet, the plane door opened and one by one the solo jumpers just flung themselves out of the plane as though they were just going for a leisurely evening stroll. My instructor told me it was time to get up and we shuffled awkwardly towards the door. He said don’t look down! This is where my heart beat really started to rise; it was definitely the most nerve-racking part of the experience.

No going back now

We had a videographer accompanying us who was in front, he was just hanging backwards out of the plane door with a gopro stuck to his head and wearing a huge grin. My instructor signaled to the videographer that it was go time and that was it, there was literally no turning back as we jumped out of the plane. Before jumping, I thought the most frightening part would be the free falling – it wasn’t, instead it was quite calm and beautiful. My videographer was close by all the time, still wearing his huge grin and reaching out to give high fives. After about one minute of free falling which seemed to go past so quickly and yet so slowly, the parachute opened. I was much relived to feel the tug caused by the air resistance on the parachute. The instructor then let me take the reins so-to-speak for a few seconds and I could somewhat control the parachute which was pretty cool. However, as we were both still thousands of feet above terra firma, I thought it wise to let the instructor do the steering. Before I knew it, the ground quickly approached us, we landed. I was really happy to be back on solid ground and still super elated for about an hour after the jump!

Some say that skydiving can be a life changing experience, I can’t say that I ‘found myself’ up there but I certainly do feel different after throwing myself out off a plane, 13, 000 feet up in the sky. Feel the pulse!

body. The equipment is connected to a machine, where the instructor can set the frequency, level by level according to each individual’s preference.

Tired of your regular workout? How about letting a machine do all the work? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, QH went to Intercontinental Doha City to try out a unique workout innovation called EMS by my30minutes at their Health and Fitness Club.

Conveniently, the information from my session was recorded on a card, so every time I go back, I can start from where I left off. Essentially, the aim is to increase the intensity day-by-day but only when you are ready to do so.

I

magine that with just 30 minutes per day, you can have a workout that compares to a mammoth four hour ‘sesh’ at the Gym. Well that’s exactly what I did. EMS stands for Electro Muscular Stimulation and it is an effective form of training which appeals to a wide spectrum of people looking to either get or stay fit. When I heard the word ‘Electro’, I have to confess, that there was some trepidation on my part. However, my patience instructor- Tim Newnham explained that I had no reason to fret; he promised that the workout would be painless and it was!

The Gymnasium The hotel’s gym is located high-in-the-sky way up on level 46; there is also an outdoor heated pool with fabulous views of the city, great during the day and spectacular in the evenings. Overall a first class facility in a very convenient location.

Getting Kitted Up First off, I had to get into the equipment. There is a jacket and separate belts that fit to key parts of your

The instructor, Tim went through each level, and I eventually chose the intensity I found most comfortable. No pain, no stress and it was a very fast workout of just 30 little minutes. I felt happy with my achievements and the next day my body really felt as though I had done a vigorous workout.

Lemme Break It Down For You Basically the impulses generated by the device are delivered through electrodes in close proximity to the muscle groups. This provides a full body workout, regardless of the action being performed. The impulses mimic those coming from the nervous system, causing the muscles to contract at a much more intense rate than during conventional training. The impulses only affect the striated skeletal muscles and do not penetrate deep enough to have any effect on the heart or other major organs in the body.

Plus Points Apart from the novelty factor, the main benefits are that people can receive a full body workout in only 30 minutes, providing little to no impact on the joints, working only the muscles around the skeletal system to provide strength and stability that would otherwise be difficult to achieve through conventional training. Aside from the physical benefits of the equipment, it is a great training time-saver for people who

don't have 2-3 hours in their day to undertake conventional training. Most important benefits and advantages include: • Stimulation of all muscles groups individually and separately at the same time • With EMS you can achieve a workout with more than 90% of the muscle fibres contracting at the same time • The training session itself is only 30 minutes, but the workout is 18 times more intense than conventional training • Treats back pain • Reduction of body weight • Improved endurance • Increased blood flow (has a positive effect on the skin, the body is toned and cellulite can be reduced effectively) • Improves physical performance: you feel more flexible, healthier, and you tire less quickly. n • Male and female trainers are available upon request. • Package rate for 10 sessions is QAR 3000. Rate for one session is QAR 350. • Sessions are subject to availability and scheduling is required. • Before attempting an EMS workout, be sure to check and see if your instructor is certified. • For more information and reservations please call 4015-8661 or email emma.robb@ihg.com

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Don't become a couch potato

Activity Each Day,

Keeps The Doctor Away Words by Ruby Smith’s

Inactivity has become a major problem across the globe in recent years, so QH turned to the health & fitness experts at EVOLVE – Mind/Body/Soul on how to combat this worry trend.

W

hen the opportunity arose for me to take an internship with EVOLVE in the Middle East, I knew it was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse. Whilst researching the prevalence of certain health conditions found in Qatar due to the lifestyle here, I realised that I could use my education, skills and knowledge to create awareness and make a difference in people’s lives. From participating in physical education (P.E.) and engaging in sport early on, I became fascinated by how the human body moves. Through P.E. I learned self discipline, confidence and commitment. I went on to study a degree in Sport and Exercise Science at Kingston University London and really developed a passion for physiology, primarily focusing on exercise prescription with regards to health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension. I wanted to be involved in helping people with these illnesses, to change their lives using exercise and create awareness of the seriousness of these diseases. Seeking an internship in the Qatar was perfect, as this is a country developing at lightning speed, however, along with breathtaking changes to

this nation comes the side effects of hypertension, obesity and diabetes - illnesses that are quite prevalent in this region.

So, Why Physiology? First of all, physiology is a science that aims to understand the mechanisms of the act of living, from cell function to the behaviour of the whole body. Physiology helps us to understand exactly how the body works and also helps us realise what goes wrong when disease takes hold, and possibly identifying new treatments for them. One of those treatments is exercise, a crucial component to keeping people healthy and happy. One thing that is definitely prevalent in the Qatar is a sedentary lifestyle; this is when a person tends to be mostly seated at work and has little engagement in physical activity. People are spending too much time sitting down at work and as soon as they get home they find themselves too tired to do anything, leaving them sitting for long periods of time throughout the day. The lack of time to pursue leisure activities in Doha, and often the lack of options specifically towards women is a big barrier to helping people become more active. The heavy traffic, high temperatures and limited pathways encourage people to drive rather than walk or even cycle.

Lessons Learned In Qatar and in many of the other GCC countries, obesity is very prevalent. This condition can lead to metabolic changes which cause much worse illnesses like diabetes and hypertension.

The combination of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol can cause Metabolic Syndrome which if not diagnosed can cause serious health problems to the individual. These syndromes are all heavily related to living a sedentary lifestyle. The sport and exercise industry has grown significantly in recent years here in Qatar and as more people become aware of the health complications that are related to inactivity, the more likely they will be to consider exercising regularly. With the prevalence of diabetes, obesity and hypertension being significantly high in Qatar, the use of exercise prescription is imperative. Qatar is one of the few nations that has an entire day dedicated to Sports however as the city of Doha expands, there has to a coherent plan to create a lot more green spaces, free football/basket/tennis courts as well as more fitness campaigns, educating people on how to avoid these conditions. Aspire Zone’s ‘Step Into Health’ campaign has been great but more campaigns and on a more regular basis are necessary. Workplaces should incorporate fitness workshops with incentives. A healthy Qatar creates a more hopeful vision, where people are educated and active. This will create a change in lifestyle through fitness and not medical care. The key is to prevent the illness and not to get to the stage where it has to be treated. n Get yourself on the track to optimal health by learning more about EVOLVE – Mind/Body/ Soul’s services. I

f you are seeking to wind down after a long day of meetings, looking to relax before an evening out or simply want to be pampered, Heavenly Spa massages, wraps, scrubs and facials offer you the opportunity to embrace bliss.

How Do You Want To Feel As soon as I enter the modern, sleek spa at the Westin, I can tell that at least on this sleepy Wednesday afternoon, I’m in for a treat of pampering and complete relaxation. Located on the mezzanine floor, I immediately step into a calming spa environment as I’m greeted by their warm and friendly staff. They give me a chart with different emotions written on a page. Then they ask me to choose which feeling I want to have by the end of the massage. I couldn’t help but be impressed, they seemed confident that whichever feeling I picked, they could deliver the appropriate experience. When a Spa gives you the opportunity to choose the way you want to feel after a massage, then for me at least, it’s the perfect way to start. My therapist, Chante Jacobs invites me to relax in the waiting area as I fill out a health form, which is provided to all first time guests. At the same time, a refreshing drink is served along with hot towels.

The Spa Chante guides me to the spa area which features nine elegant treatment rooms with designated male and female zones. They include a bath robe and slippers with amenities so that I can prepare for the massage. At the Spa you also can find an indoor Jacuzzi, swimming pool, wet and dry sauna, a washroom with lockers, showers, and toilets. The treatment room was impressive with its luxurious modern decor in what was a well sized room. Not too big and at the same time, not to poky. My therapist requests that all accessories and jewelry be removed before starting the treatment so as to make me as comfortable as possible. She gives me a treatment menu and I ask her about the Aspire Massage, she explains that it’s a 50 minute treatment based solely on the guest’s answer to one simple question: How do you want to feel? A blend of natural aromatherapy oils and lots of different massage techniques are utilized to leave me feeling exactly as I requested. The aromatherapy oils have various properties which can leave one feeling relaxed, de-stressed, or renewed. I chose renewed and my therapist tells me that lavender oil goes well in helping to achieve this.

Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Photography by Jessie Palanca

The lights are dimmed; the subtle essence of aromatic oils and candle scents mix and fill the air as soothing music is played in the background.

QH soaks up the tranquil atmosphere of the Heavenly Spa at the newly opened Westin Doha Hotel, where first class luxury and the personal touch go hand in hand.

I’m advised to close my eyes, and allow my mind to be free of thoughts. My therapist tells me to take big deep breathes. I do as told and breathe deeply, letting the tension slip away with each breath.

The lush reception area immediately oozes the notion of rest and relaxation

Relax before or after your treatment in this aqua inspired wet room

The treatment starts and I can feel that Chante is a very experienced therapist. She asks how much force she should apply, I requested her to apply medium pressure and I got exactly what I was looking for. The therapist asks which areas she should focus on, in my case, I told her to just do a general massage all over my body. The treatment starts with me laying on my front and later I turned around as she focused on my front. The 50 minute treatment beats all my expectations. She finishes by doing both a facial and head massage; at this point I am almost asleep. Then she politely informs me that the treatment is finished, I felt relaxed and totally renewed to continue with my day. Of course, I wanted to stay there forever, but in the end I’m just grateful for 50 magical minutes. The Westin Heavenly Spa is certainly a 5 star experience; it provides the perfect escape from arduous city life. n HEAVENLY SPA Location: The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa Timings: 9:00 a.m. till 10:00 p.m. Age: Guests must be at least 16 years of age to experience spa treatments, fitness facilities and locker rooms. two Presidential Suites and two Royal Suites. Adjacent to the hotel is also a residential complex which provides long and short term accommodation rentals.

How the other half live, is a question many of us have often pondered. Luckily, this month QH got a chance to peek into this world after a one night staycation at the Grand Hyatt Doha’s Royal Suite.

The hotel has a range of services that offer anything and everything you could ever think of, so if you’re not sure, then just ask.

L

With a number of different outlets, the Grand Hyatt Doha has you covered, be it, Thai food, cafes, lounges or all-day dinning.

A Room Like No Other

ocated on the shoreline of the new upscale West Bay Lagoon district and within convenient distance from the Pearl Qatar and Lagoona Mall, the Grand Hyatt Doha is perfectly placed for a bit of rest and relaxation.

Having arrived a little late to the Grand Hyatt Doha for check in, I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that I’d be staying in one of the Royal Suites for the night. Someone was definitely smiling down on me that day!

There are 249 guestrooms including 17 Grand Suites, eight Grand Executive Suites, ten Al Mirqab Suites,

I grabbed the card key with haste and eagerly walked to the elevator. This was no ordinary room,

as the large majestic door swung open; it revealed a level of luxury and style that left a rather large grin across my face I must say. Equipped with a mini office, main lounge, small kitchen, and a huge bedroom with a walk-in-wardrobe, I felt that I could very quickly, if not immediately, get used to this. The decor was warm with plenty of earthy colours, lots of browns, yellows and light beiges. The high ceilings and sense of grandeur didn’t escape my attention and was compounded when I stepped out onto the biggest veranda I have seen in a hotel. However, for me at least, the wow factor came from the restroom. It was almost like a mini spa with a lavish freestanding bathtub/Jacuzzi, a separate shower that could fit a whole village inside and of course, the obligatory Sauna room. Sure, why not?

Iftar O’clock

72 QH July 2016 - FINAL.indd 72

6/26/16 09:14

After exploring the suite for a while to see what was what and playing with the TV for about five minutes, I had worked up a bit of an appetite. So down I went to the ground floor where I met up with a colleague of mine as we went to The Grill, the Grand Hyatt Doha’s all-day dining venue, a place that usually offers premium meats with contemporary European cuisine. However, with it being Ramadan last month, it had been magically transformed into an amazing Iftar experience, offering a mixture of cuisines from around the world. Including of course, the local Khaleeji classics. Everything I tried was of a high quality, with plenty of variety on offer and a great atmosphere.

Soak in this freestanding tub or rest in the Sauna

With dinner finished, I took a stroll around the beautifully manicured grounds and checked out the 400 meter private beach. Simply spectacular!

Time To Say Goodbye

Italian fare at its best

With a very good night’s sleep in a most comfortable bed, I awoke early to check out the sun as it rose over the deep blue sea. Standing still, I could feel the sun’s rays slowly warming my skin. After my five minutes of Anthropo-photosynthesis (I made this word up btw), I jump into the luxurious rainfall shower and proceeded to stay there for a good 20 minutes. Refreshed and clean I picked up my things and headed for the complimentary breakfast at Rocca, the Hyatt’s poolside restaurant serving Italian cuisine prepared in an open kitchen. Again, no complaints here, the staff were super friendly and helpful and the choice on offer for breakfast had me deliberating a good few minutes. Having stayed in many a hotel in my time, I can safely say that for those looking for an enchanted stay, then the Grand Hyatt Doha is a natural choice. Of course, longer stays too can be pleasant but for my one night retreat, I have to say that I was more than satisfied. Thank you Grand Hyatt Doha, you made my week. n

Zestful Zanzibar

Words and selected images by Samia Qaiyum

Sun-drenched shores, picturesque sunsets, and palm tree-fringed beaches blend with a unique culture and chaos in the best sense of the word. Meet Zanzibar, an island with infinite charisma.

T

o say Zanzibar is the ultimate Indian Ocean experience is an understatement. Ride aboard a traditional sailing dhow, stop to admire an intricately carved wooden door, and take the time to smell the scent of the clove –you’ll see that the island’s vibrant past is alive and well. Here, diversity reigns supreme. The Assyrians, Egyptians, Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and English have all past through at one time or another. The Omani Arabs and Shirazi Persians stayed to settle and rule, thus turning Zanzibar’s locals into true symbols of its colourful heritage.

Living History No trip to Zanzibar would be complete without exploring the fascinating Stone Town, its historical capital and the only functioning ancient town in East Africa. Located on the island's west coast, Stone Town’s labyrinth of cobbled streets and crumbling 19th century architecture makes it easy to see why it was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Whilst you could simply stroll around its

bathhouses, craft centres, mosques and colourful backstreet markets at your own pace, a guided tour comes highly recommended for true insights into this traditional society – and tidbits that you would undoubtedly miss whilst wandering around on your own. Stone Town boasts a multitude of important architectural highlights. History buffs should start at the imposing Palace Museum. Once the official residence of the Sultan of Zanzibar, it was renamed the Peoples’ Palace following the revolution in 1964 and turned into a museum in 1994. Today, visitors are able to view much of the Sultans’ furniture and other royal paraphernalia. Another defining feature is the Old Fort, the first defensive structure erected by the Omani Arabs when they seized the island from the Portuguese in 1698. These days, its restored rooms house offices for the Zanzibar Cultural Centre, while the open-air amphitheatre provides a dramatic screening venue for the Zanzibar International Film Festival. The most attractive landmark in the cultural heart of the island however, has to be the Old Dispensary. This late 19th century building was commissioned by prominent Indian merchant Tharia Topan, and gained its name because it housed a dispensary on the ground floor. It has been successfully restored after falling into disrepair in the 1970s, so a visit to admire its peppermint-green latticework balconies and wander through its interior is a must.

A Beleaguered Past As Zanzibar remained a hub of the slave trade in East Africa for several centuries, a tribute to David Livingston’s tireless work in the abolition of this practice in 1897 can be seen in the face of the Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ. Built on the site of the world’s last open slave market, its altar marks the whipping tree where slaves were lashed. Be sure to walk over to the poignant slave memorial outside that depicts five slaves standing in a pit wearing original neck collars and chains, their haunting expressions say more than words ever could. Next door, two of the 15 dank, cramped holding cells that housed up to 65 slaves awaiting sale are open to the public, serving as a grim reminder of the not-so-distant past.

Last but not least is Beit el-Ajaib (House of Wonders), a grand ceremonial palace built by Sultan Barghash that now houses the National Museum of History & Culture. Built in 1883, it was the first in Zanzibar to have electricity and an elevator, thereby earning its name. It’s currently closed to the public, but viewing its exterior on the way to an evening spent at the waterside Forodhani Gardens is worthwhile – its main doors are said to be the largest carved doors in East Africa, while the two canons that guard the entrance were captured from the Portuguese in 1622. At the gardens is a festive, carnival-esque atmosphere, courtesy of the nightly food market. This is the place to sample everything from crab claws and calamari steaks to Urojo soup, hand-pressed sugar cane juice and Zanzibar’s take on pizza – all on a budget, too. If you’re the cautious type when it comes to food, opt instead for the Emerson Spice Rooftop Tea House. The restaurant complements authentic Swahili cuisine with expertly-made cocktails, but it’s the magical backdrop of vibrant floor cushions, dimly-lit lanterns, live taarab music, and views over the motley roofs of Stone Town that you’ll remember most. Just be sure to get there in time for sunset.

What Lies Beyond At least one day-trip outside of Stone Town is compulsory for a change of pace, and considering Zanzibar is blessed with several offshore islands, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Prison Island, originally used by the Arabs to detain insubordinate slaves, is only a 30-minute boat ride away. You can sunbathe or simply gaze at the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean on its powdery-white beach. Or snorkel away the day among its beautiful coral reefs. Prison Island is also home to a family of giant tortoises – some of which are over 100 years old (imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century). Another jaunt not to be missed is the classic Spice Tour. Many of the islands produce cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg and pepper, all of which are integral to local life. For this reason, Zanzibar is referred to as the “Spice Island”. Book the tour with Zanzibar Different, which incorporates a guided tour through a spice plantation with a traditional coffee ceremony in Salome’s Garden as well as stops at the historic Kidichi Persian Baths and ruins of Mtoni Palace.

Slave holding cells

It’s best to visit Zanzibar during the dry, temperate months from June to October. Qatar Airways flies direct from Doha to Zanzibar three times weekly and via Kilimanjaro four times a week. n

QH SENSATIONS

Family Friendly Maldives

Words by Lynsey Riach

Mention to anyone that you’re about to fly with a baby for the first time and you’ll probably receive a strong wince. QH contributor Lynsey Riach jetted off to the Maldives with her family and was pleasantly surprised by the baby-friendly isle which she discovered.

M

y Husband and I attempted a short four hour flight with our young baby, flying Qatar Airways direct from Doha to Male, the capital of the Maldives. Smack-bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives look too beautiful to be real. Let’s just call it paradise, shall we? Onboard, Qatar Airways staff greeted our sleepy boy with much cheer and a collection of complimentary toys to entertain him in his bassinet.

Four Hours Later… The Maldives are that place you’ve dreamt about and as new parents; we wanted to try somewhere

that was both luxurious and also family friendly, luckily we found the resort of Per Aquum Niyama. Upon our arrival and with an entourage of baby gear, we transferred to our seaplane. The propellers spun away with just our little family onboard and two barefoot pilots. We cruised for 45 minutes over the brightest blue seas I had ever seen, before gliding down to a silky splash landing at our new home for the week. Waiting for us was the tanned and very happy GM along with the Kids Club Manager who held out a balloon for our baby. We felt genuinely cared for and special. A brief conversation followed (which turned out to be our actual check-in) and we were then whisked by buggy to our spacious private water villa. Stacked on stilts, a collection of rustic thatched roofs stood over a turquoise lagoon that eventually blended into the Indian Ocean. Tropical fish and stingrays glided beneath us as we approached our abode. From the luxury of our own pool, we spotted a turtle and some dolphins. We fell helplessly in love with the view from our bed and one could never tire of the haze of azure blue that stretched out before us each day.

A Baby-centric Haven Upon our arrival to our pad, we were delighted to find a baby cot, baby bath and changing station with toiletries ready to use. Bottle warmer and sterilization unit along with a baby monitor which were all set up. It left me wondering why I had bothered to pack and lug all of our baby gear! For those who think they just won’t be able to rest and relax…think again. This island is bigger than you might expect. Each villa comes with bikes to explore the separate areas of the resort (‘chill’ and ‘play’ as they are known). I enjoyed yoga on the beach each morning followed by a hearty breakfast at Blu. We lazed the day away at our villa without ever seeing another soul. We scoffed delicious homemade ice cream re-stocked in our room each day. My Husband hit the reefs to snorkel; I indulged in a massage at the beautiful beach huts of Lime Spa. We enjoyed sunset views from a hidden hammock on the beach after strolling with our baby through lush jungle en route to the resort deli and shops. Designed for you in mind, Per Aquum Niyama suits the businessman, the honeymooning couple or the family. They’ll even help you pack lightly with plenty of resort side help. Mention you are travelling with a

baby or children and just some of the items available free of charge include nappies, wipes, toys, stroller, crib, baby bath, potty and even baby nail clippers.

Malé City- the capital of the Maldives, floating precariously just above the waves

The resort is also home to a fantastic kids club concept by Scott Dunn called ‘Explorers’. With an exemplary reputation for childcare within the hospitality industry (they guarantee that all staff are fully-qualified child care graduates). Even for our very young baby, there were plenty of toys and bouncers not to mention happy and friendly staff on hand to play or babysit if necessary. The club is an incredible place for children to cultivate their creativity. Amongst jungle, huge plastic water features, spraying water down on the infectious sound of children laughing. There is also a climbing wall, sand pit, and a giant sunken grass trampoline that allows children of all ages to be kept active and happy whilst on holiday. But all the fun isn’t just for the kids. Enjoy a sunset sip at beach bar Dune or high above the resort at Farenheit. Dine and dance under the sea at Subsix, the world’s first underwater nightclub and in true James Bond style, reach the venue by speedboat.

Top notch snorkeling

With your very own designated butler and staff who effortlessly anticipate what you need or want before you know it, the Maldives, for us, was our very own slice of paradise, and I feel lucky to have had the chance to experience this beautiful chain of jaw droppingly gorgeous islands. Oh and keep an eye out on the seaplane, if you’re lucky like me, you may even spot a shark or two! n Qatar Airways flies twice daily from Doha to Male. Words by Antony D. Antoniou

With many people choosing to move home over the summer months, it’s important to remember a few things so as to make your moving experience as smooth as possible. QH sought the advice of Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group Leasing Experts for some handy tips before you start breaking out those dusty cardboard boxes!

The Bilal Pearl Suites, a new and exciting place to live

Proximity To Work/School Qatar is a nation developing at what sometimes feels like breakneck speed, as such there are often a few teething problems when it comes to the daily commute. For peace of mind therefore and to ensure consistent attendance at work or school, it’s pretty wise to be no further than a 15 minute drive, if possible.

The Unexpected Often in Doha, roads seem to change at a moment’s notice with many diversions that can really affect large parts of the city. There’s not much you can about it if diversions happen to occur in your area but it is something to look out for once you have found an area that you like.

Finalise Kahramaa Bills From Previous Contract Without doing this, you won’t be able to open a new Kahramaa account, so this is a vital step when moving and should be a priority.

Construction Noise At the moment, many parts of Doha are huge construction sites, so noise pollution is probably one of your biggest challenges. However with a bit of reconnaissance, you may be lucky enough to find an area without the constant sound of digging. Look at long established areas such as Al Sadd, Old Airport, Mamoora or Najma for example. All of these areas went through their “growing pains” a decade earlier. Check various websites and research if your chosen area is soon to undergo major construction or road works. Ashghal – The Nation’s Public Works Authority tends to be quite good when it comes to informing the public, so check their website and various social media channels.

Scope Out The Area At Night Time This again, falls under the category of noise and as we tend to do most of our sleeping at night, it is absolutely crucial to check for the dreaded sound of digging machines at night. Believe me, you won’t regret doing this.

Maintenance services Make sure the landlord provides adequate maintenance services, especially if you are paying a high rental sum.

Ample Parking

High Quality Living

In car crazy Doha, this goes without saying. An official allotted car parking space makes all the difference, especially for those who have just bought a new car. Parking can be tricky even at the best of times. So choosing a house with no parking should be avoided.

For those of you with a bit of cash to splash, then the Pearl Qatar is the residence of choice with its many luxury properties and fabulous, ever-expanding outlets. Located to the north of the city, its an artificial island spanning nearly four million square metres. It is the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals.

Check Water Pressure Nobody wants a doggy shower in the mornings and of course, low water pressure can sometimes be hard to resolve. So be sure to test all the faucets in the apartment/villa before signing the contract.

AHB Real Estate offers high end properties with excellent 24/7 maintenance services. For leasing enquiries please contact marketing@ahbqatar.com.
