About Us Dear friends, May you all enjoy the blessings of the Holy Month. This year Ramadan arrives near the start of june. With this in mind, the team at QH has been busy putting together an extensive guide for the month of Ramadan but also explaining what this time of year means to the Islamic world.

QH is your voice and your guide for all things fun, funky and happening in Qatar! Send us your feedback to editor@qatarhappening.com. Publisher: The Art of Business Chairman: Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal Editor-in-Chief: Mr. Nasser Ahmed Hassan Bilal Editorial Director: Antony D. Antoniou

Moving on, there are many people in the world who are less fortunate than ourselves and Ramadan is a time to reflect and be grateful for what we have. Islam states that Muslims are obliged to be charitable so in our feature ‘A Time for Giving’, we take a closer look at what you can do to help others during this month in Qatar. Again, we have some great interviews in this issue, including an insightful chat with the new British Ambassador H.E. Mr Ajay Sharma. So take this chance to learn the latest about Qatar-UK’s long relations.

Lastly, we know that there are many people who are new to the Middle East and Qatar or who simply don’t know much about Islam, so be sure to read ‘The Dish on Qatar’ which will give you a brief overview of the Holy Month and Islam in general. From the team at Qatar Happening, we thank you for choosing us during this special time of year and we wish you and your loved ones a joyous and fulfilling Ramadan.

amadan Kareem to one and all. The Holy Month is back and with this being only my second issue it’s really been a privilege learning all about Ramadan and Islam. This is the month when the beauty and rich history of Islam touches us all.

This Ramadan, I’m sure that I will have my hands full, with invite after invite for the sumptuous Suhoor spreads which abound in the five-star hotels here. Although I will probably gain a few kilos, I also hope to gain a deeper sense of this ancient culture and beautiful world religion.

Raising Money For The Residents Of Aleppo The famous Katara Cultural Village urged customers to spend big on food back in May and do their bit in supporting the under-siege Syrian city of Aleppo. QH was happy to see such fundraising taking place to help the victims of this drawn-out conflict.

Ramadan is a time of year when the hospitality industry here in Qatar really does go above-and-beyond, catering to any and all palates with their lavish tents and Islamic themed events. We’ve highlighted some great food and dining options in our ‘Savouring Ramadan Flavours’ feature which will certainly get you salivating. In Entertainment, we have an exclusive interview with Star Chef - Greg Malouf who has been flown in especially to present his Ramadan inspired meals at the W Doha’s famous ‘Sultan’s Tent’ this year. Lead actress Saoirse Ronan tells us about the pangs of growing up, living in New York and her latest role in ‘Loving Vincent’ - the first fully painted animation feature length film of its kind. Our fantastic food reviews this month should certainly help you, if you’re looking for an Iftar night to remember. In Sport, we sent Abode Editor Annabel Rooney off to Dubai to try out, perhaps, the most beautiful sports drop top there is, the Ferrari 488 Spider. Check out what she had to say. Of course, for many of us the month of June will represent a celebration of the ‘beautiful game’ as UEFA EURO 2016 kicks off on the 10th. For the first time, the European Championships will be contested by 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team format used since 1996.

Small Teams Do Us Proud Last month saw football minnows Leicester City F.C. win the English Premier League, a feat that brought a sense of fairytale wonder back to the ‘beautiful game’. Athletico made it to the Champions League Final and Seville saw off the mighty Liverpool in the Europa League Final 3-1. May, was a good month for the underdog!

From all the team here at QH headquarters, we wish you and your family a wonderful Ramadan. See you next month D-Towners. Antony D. Antoniou Editor

hen The Parlotones met in 1998 in Johannesburg, little did they know that they would go on to write one of the greatest Rock ‘n Roll stories South Africa had ever seen. The Parlotones’ early sound was rooted in Brit rock, but eventually grew to incorporate a wider spectrum of musical genres. The lyrics focus on personal themes, of love and everyday life, paired with catchy melodies. The band has toured internationally since 2007, regularly visiting the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North America, as well as shows in South America, Canada, Australia, Japan and Russia. They have also toured with Coldplay, Starsailor, Ash, The Wombats, Snow Patrol and Blue October.

The Parlotones are Kahn Morbee, Neil Pauw and brothers Glen and Paul Hodgson. They formed over 10 years ago and achieved massive success in their home country of South Africa, as well as success in various international markets. QH managed to grab a moment with Star Chef - Greg Malouf who has just flown into Qatar to oversee a delicious array of fantastic Ramadan culinary delights in the Sultan’s Tent at W Doha this year.

With seven best-selling and award-winning food and travel books to his name. Malouf’s food reflects a deep connection with his heritage as well as inspiration from his extensive travels around the Middle East.

So What’s New In The Sultan’s Tent? Guests can look forward to a unique brand of contemporary Middle Eastern food with Malouf’s take on Mezza. it from a very young age. For me of course it’s the former, as it never fails to take me back to my childhood, giving me a major dose of nostalgia. Which I think is wonderful; food should fill you with emotions and memories. QH: Who inspired you to become a chef?

QH: Chef Malouf, welcome to Doha, how are you finding it? Is this your first time in the country? GM: It’s actually my third time in the country. Previously, I have had the opportunity to visit the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art which I thought it was spectacular. I also tried out Alain Ducasse’s Restaurant – Idam, which was great too. The city is diverse in the sense that it combines a lot of energy and at the same time, the opportunity for relaxation, which is something that really fascinates me. I believe that the food culture in Doha is close to being on par with that of Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s high-end restaurants. QH: What would you say is your all-time favourite Middle Eastern dish? GM: My favourite would have to be Kibbeh Nayeh which incidentally is the national dish of Lebanon and Syria. The word ‘Nayeh’ means raw in Arabic. It’s a dish that you either learn to love or you hate

GM: My greedy appetite! That was essentially it. That and the privilege of spending time with family over a large feast and just connecting. The choice of sitting down and sharing so many small dishes, whether at a restaurant or even at home, makes it such a social experience which is really what I enjoy. QH: Have you been flown over to the Middle East to do similar events like this before during Ramadan? GM: No, not during Ramadan, this is my very first time and really, I can think of no better way to experience the joys of Ramadan than cooking at the stunning Sultan’s Tent in W Doha which has such an esteemed reputation. I’m very excited to meet everyone at my station which is called The Art of Mezza. I think people will like what I have in store for them, so I hope to see lots and lots of people. QH: What kind of considerations went into your thought process when deciding your final meal plans for the Sultan’s Tent at W Doha?

16 QH June 2016 - FINAL.indd 16

5/26/16 12:07

The Sultan's Tent, an exercise in luxury and arabesque decor

GM: It’s the sheer numbers you work on really. The tent, potentially accommodates 500 to 600 guests per night, hence keeping it fresh, flavoursome and visually satisfying is important. Also, preparing a diverse menu that everyone can enjoy. Children are also important to this auspicious occasion so I have designed a dish which is visually appealing and a favourite for any child or any person who is young at heart. QH: What is unique about your offerings?

Middle Eastern fare at its best

GM: Ramadan is all about family. Although the menu has a variety that caters to everyone, one of the dishes in particular, the Scottish Salmon dish is geared towards seafood lovers. This dish has been integrated from my mum’s recipe and tailored to suit a western palate. The whole salmon is cooked gently at a low temperature for a short period of time, coated with yogurt Tahini and dressed with coriander, walnuts, sumac topped off by lemon vinaigrette. It’s the creaminess of the yogurt, freshness of the coriander combined with sumac and the crunch of walnuts that creates such a wonderful balance of ingredients. n The traditional Sultan’s Tent offers tastes from around the world with buffet tables dedicated to Arabic, Indian, Asian, Japanese and Italian cuisines. These are complemented by a generous assortment of the most delectable desserts and beverages. The Iftar package will be available from Iftar to 8:15 p.m. at QR 230 per person, and Suhoor from 9:15 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at QR 285 per person.

By Jan Janssen Interview and selected images courtesy of Viva Press

At just 22 years of age Saoirse Ronan has already become an A-list star with her enchanting on screen presence. This Irish starlet deserves all of the attention she gets, wisely picking roles that often others pass up. Ronan stars in the ambitious new feature length movie - Loving Vincent (first painted animation). QH caught up with the young actress to find out what it was like making such a unique film and how life has has changed since moving to New York.

S

aoirse Ronan is the kind of sweet, goodnatured, beautiful young woman you fall in love with at first sight. When she speaks in her dreamy, lilting Irish brogue, it's like listening to an angel descended from heaven whose mission is to lift the spirits of even the most despairing of souls. Today, following her best actress Oscar nomination for her work in "Brooklyn," the 22-yearold Ronan is one of the most sought-after young performers in Hollywood. It was precisely her ethereal voice that Polish painter/filmmaker Dorota Kobiela and her co-director

Hugh Welchman (an Oscar winner for Peter and the Wolf), sought to harness when they cast her in Loving Vincent, an experimental project that dramatises the life of the tormented Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and marks the first time in the history of cinema that a full-length feature film consists entirely of hand-painted drawings. "This movie about van Gogh’s story is so remarkable - it's hard to believe every frame in the film is painted by hand," Ronan says. "My character is based on a portrait of a woman he painted while sitting at a piano. Research has shown that she might have had a relationship with Van Gogh before he was killed, or killed himself - who knows?" Loving Vincent explores the story of Van Gogh's troubled life and sudden death by taking 120 of his greatest paintings and the individuals represented in those works and then weaving the images into a narrative structure based on 800 letters written by the artist himself. The plot unfolds by means of interviews with the people closest to the tortured artist as well as through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death. Apart from Ronan, the cast includes Aidan Turner, Douglas Booth, Helen McCrory, Chris O'Dowd, and Jerome Flynn. Over 100 artists were recruited from around the world for the massive undertaking that took 18 months for them to produce the 56,000 oil paintings - all of which are faithful to Van Gogh's signature post-Impressionist style - that went into the making of the 80-minute movie. Instead of using state-of-the-art computer animation technology, Kobiela and Welchman decided that every single image in the film would be the work of individual artists who were assembled into a studio

in Gdansk, Poland to carry out their mission. "It's the world's first fully painted feature film and possibly the last," laughed co-director Welchman, alluding to the monumental nature of the effort. Said co-director Kobiela: "In Van Gogh's last letter he wrote: 'Well, the truth is, we cannot speak other than by our paintings,' and that is what we are doing - letting his paintings tell the story of what the painter had inside his heart, and ultimately, what happened to him." Saoirse Ronan recently earned an Oscar nomination as best actress for her work in Brooklyn, having previously earned a best supporting actress nomination at age 15 for her work in Atonement. She has previously appeared in several major films including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Host, Byzantium, and Hanna. Later this year she stars in The Seagull, based on the play by Chekhov, followed by her appearance in On Chesil Beach, the screen adaptation of the eponymous Ian McEwan novel (she previously played in Atonement, also based on a McEwan) Ronan was born in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York City to Irish parents before her family returned to Ireland at age three where she lived in County Carlow and Dublin. Her mother Monica worked as a nanny while her father Paul is an actor (he had a small role in "The Devil's Own" and Brad Pitt reportedly spent time showing a then 3-year-old Saoirse around the set of the film - ED). Her work in Brooklyn shot in New York last year, so inspired her that she recently decided to move back to the Big Apple and "explore everything" that the city has to offer. Ronan is rumoured to be dating English actor Max Irons, son of legendary screen star Jeremy Irons.

QH: Saoirse, this must be an interesting time in your life with yet another Oscar nomination for your performance in Brooklyn. How much has changed in your world since you worked in Atonement, which earned you your first Oscar nomination? SR: I'm very excited about everything that is happening to me. I was very happy to have been offered the lead role in Brooklyn because it was the kind of character that enabled me to get past my image as a teenage actress. (She plays a young Irish immigrant in 1950s New York - ED). I will always be so grateful to (director) Joe Wright for casting me in Atonement which was my breakthrough as an actress. I was completely wrong for the role but Joe fought for me and it worked out so well for me. But that was eight years ago and since then I've evolved considerably not only as a woman, but hopefully as an actress. QH: Apart from your work in upcoming films like The Seagull and On Chesil Beach, you've done voice work on Loving Vincent. What was that experience like? SR: I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I think audiences will be stunned by the images - it's a very different

kind of visual experience and I can't wait to see the (finished) film myself. It's also a very interesting and moving story. It was also a challenge to have to focus so much on your voice and rely on that alone to convey the emotions of the character. QH: Do you feel that your life has changed with all the success you've had? SR: Not that much. I don't really like to spend a lot of money and I'm not crazy about shopping. The only time I really splurged on something was after I had finished shooting The Seagull. I was so happy that I wanted to celebrate and I went out and bought myself a cashmere sweater. I would rather spend money going out with my friends or going to the theatre or concerts than buying expensive clothes or other things. QH: How have you enjoyed living and working in New York? (She recently performed in a Broadway production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible - ED) SR: Oh, that's been a big change. (Smiles) I was born there and now America has become very important to me again. Before I started living in New York my mum was always with me and we were travelling together wherever I had to work on a film.

I couldn't wait to start living on my own, although it was scary at first. I grew up in a very sheltered environment. I didn't have a very normal upbringing because when you start working in films as I did when I was young, you get used to being surrounded by people who are always bringing you food or tea or picking you up from your house to take you to work. My parents always did the cooking for me at home and I very rarely did my own laundry. QH: Was that the first time you had been living on your own? SR: Before I started living in New York I had also spent some time living on my own in London. I had just finished work on The Grand Budapest Hotel and it was the first time that my mom hadn't spent the whole time with me while I was making a film. That experience made me feel like I should try to find out what it's like to be on my own. So I moved for a time to London. Suddenly I had to worry about all those very basic things like taking care of the rent, washing my clothes, shopping for groceries - otherwise I quickly found out that the refrigerator would be empty. What a surprise! (Laughs) But I enjoyed taking responsibility for my life and I love being on my own. This is what I guess you would call "growing up!"

20 QH June 2016 - FINAL.indd 20

5/26/16 12:07

QH: Do you feel that all the experiences that come from living in a big city like New York have been a source of inspiration to you? SR: Yes. I love having a new-found sense of independence and being able to explore life on my own. New York is the kind of cosmopolitan city that exposes you to so many different cultures and you feel like you're tapping into many different worlds. But I still feel Irish and Ireland will always be home to me no matter where I live. I must say though that I love being in New York - it's such a stimulating city and I've made many good friends there. I've also discovered that I've become much stronger and more outgoing since I've been living there. QH: Your parents left Ireland and immigrated to New York where they lived for 13 years. What brought them to America in the first place? SR: They left because of the difficult economic situation in Ireland at the time. But even in the United States my parents had to fight hard to survive. My mother worked as a nanny and my father, who was an actor, worked most of the time in a bar. And they lived in very modest circumstances in the Bronx where I lived until I was three and then my parents decided to move back to Ireland. QH: You've said in the past that your mother has been a very strong influence in your life? SR: My mother has always been my role model. She's never been interested in material things and she's taught me never to be blinded by fame or fortune. Both my parents have always gone about their lives with a lot of dignity and responsibility. I've taken that to heart. I've learnt to be true to myself and to follow my instincts. You need to find out who you are and what is it in life that's truly meaningful to you and then go out and pursue your ambitions.

the film With her recent performance in d heads, Brooklyn, Saoirse once again turne winning another Oscar nomination.

Saoirse plays the lead role in 'Loving Vincent', a unique animated film about the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

There will always be moments where you struggle and you begin to have doubts about what you're doing, and that's when you need to be very determined and have faith in yourself if you want to accomplish your goals. QH: How did you first get into acting? SR: When I was a little girl, my father would take me to his film sets whenever he had a job as an actor. I remember feeling very happy and comfortable in that kind of environment. He says that I even got to spend some time with Brad Pitt while he was shooting "The Devil's Own" and that Brad was bouncing me on his knee. Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me remember any of that! QH: You mentioned your work on The Seagull. How challenging was it do a film version of that very famous Chekhov play? SR: It was one of the most exhausting productions I've ever done. We shot very long hours and often we would work late into the night. I would return to my hotel room every night exhausted. I was so tired and still tense from doing my scenes that the only

way I could relax was to lie in bed, drink several cups of tea, and watch TV. I became a big addict of The Veep with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss! QH: Working as much as you do, is there ever any moment where you feel alone or down? SR: Sometimes I can feel anxious or worried about things in general. That's when I usually call my mum and we'll talk for hours. We're very close. Or I'll call my aunt Margaret or Christopher, a friend of mine who's like my brother. Whenever we have a chat life becomes much simpler and I feel good again. n

The Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab Mosque Tour By Sarah Al Motairi

The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time of year that believers look forward to every year. In unison, millions of Muslims around the globe dedicate one month to worshipping the Almighty, selflessly, and filled with a sense of discipline and at the same time, openness. QH takes a look at the beautiful Grand Mosque as Ramadan fast approaches.

F

rom sunrise to sunset, food and drink is forbidden, days are spent working towards disciplining the inner self, bettering ones character, abstaining from all worldly pleasures (and sins). It is a time to give, to sacrifice and understand the meaning of being “without. One of my favourite places to worship and visit during Ramadan is the Grand Mosque in Doha, also known as Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab

Mosque. Located in Al Jebailat neighbourhood, this mosque is a place that dedicates its existence to all, ready to grant us a place to worship, find peace and grow. Sitting atop a gentle hill, close to TV round about, the Grand Mosque covers a large area of about 171,164 square metres. The exterior of the mosque resembles that of an ancient Arabian fort; sturdy, safe and at the same time perfectly complementing its surroundings. The mosque boasts 28 large domes in its central space, whilst 65 more domes cover the outer structure. Domes feature strongly throughout Islamic history, as far back as the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans based their models on pre-existing Byzantine domes, developing ever wider central domes, with huge diameters of sacred and serene space. As you walk through the intricate Islamic inspired arched doors, you have no choice but to be taken aback by the elegance of the interior. My eyes are pulled to the high ceilings, embossed with Islamic art, adorned with large, golden chandeliers. Every chandelier stands out, alone yet uniform,

complimenting the interior and illuminating it at the same time. Rows of red and gold carpets, symmetrically line the floor, each line carefully spaced as a marker for worshippers to stand in prayer. Chairs are dotted throughout the mosque for those less able to stand whilst praying. Tall, solid columns seem to defy gravity as they hold this grand structure upright. One is immediately inspired by the grandeur and beauty of this holy space.

During Ramadan In the holy month, the Grand Mosque becomes the preferred destination of worship for thousands of Muslims. The mosque can hold a capacity of up to 30,000 worshippers and people are often seen overflowing into the parking lot and surrounding area during Ramadan. At maghreb (Sunset), the dedicated flock to pray and share in a tradition of breaking the fast at the mosque. Most mosques in Qatar will set up tents nearby where dates, water and milk are distributed, free of charge, to quench the thirst of the fasting and relieve.

5/26/16 12:07

Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab Mosque: A sight to behold right here in Doha.

The Grand Mosque is just as grand on the inside too

The Grand Mosque’s has an added tradition whereby a canon is fired as dusk takes over the skies, signalling the end of the fast for that day. Be sure to go check it out, but bring some ear plugs. It’s astonishingly loud. The congregation starts with a “bismillah” (In the name of Allah), enjoying the simple but fulfilling bites. Afterwards, the prayer hall is cleared of food and drink, and the congregation stands shoulder to shoulder, foot to foot, to bow in worship and show their gratefulness. No person is segregated by class, ethnicity or race. We are all one in the presence of Allah. Another tradition that surrounds the month of Ramadan is Taraweeh Prayers. These prayers are practiced only during the month of Ramadan, post-Isha (night) prayer. Taraweeh Prayers are not compulsory, rather, Sunnah (meaning a practice of the Prophet Muhammed, Peace Be Upon Him) which is highly encouraged. Every Ramadan, Muslims try to complete the reading of the entire Holy Quran, as a way to gain blessings. The Taraweeh prayer is geared towards that admirable aim. Over the 30 days of Ramadan,

the Imam of a mosque will try to complete the whole Quran during Taraweeh prayers. This is accomplished by reading a “Juz” (a section) a day during the Taraweeh prayer, dividing the Quran chapters into 30 equal parts over 30 days.

Ramadan At home Families share in tasty home-cooked meals, laughter, and joy, often recalling old memories and family traditions which have been passed down the generations. In order to prepare for the next fasting day, a light meal is prepared pre-sunrise. This meal is called Suhoor and assists with preserving energy for the

day ahead. For 30 days, Muslims all over the world repeat this regimented and ambitious routine. Whether fasting or not, Muslim or non-Muslim, male or female, young or old, I highly recommend that everyone enjoy the spirit of Ramadan. Participate in a traditional Fatoor (break-fast) in the many Iftar tents around Qatar, join a Muslim family at their home or really go all out over a Suhoor spread in a restaurant or hotel. For more information on the Grand Mosque or for a tour of a mosque in Doha, please visit Fanar Qatar Islamic Cultural Center at: www.fanar.gov.qa/Ornamentation.aspx n

By Rab’iah M.

As the Holy month of Ramadan fast approaches, Muslims will take part in an entire month of fasting where they'll abstain from food and water during daylight hours. This of course tests their endurance, patience and tolerance. QH decided to take a look at a more fun side to Ramadan with the famous Khaleeji tradition of Garangao.

A

lso known by other names in the Gulf, in Qatar the festival is known as Garangao and is celebrated after the breaking of the fast on the 14th night of Ramadan, when half of the fasting month is finished. According to Abdulaziz Al Mesnad, a Qatari student who is currently studying in the U.K and who hails from Al Khor, “Garangao is a special day where all GCC citizens celebrate the festival with plenty of enthusiasm and a sense of fun”. This is a day when all GCC families dress in traditional outfits. Women wear bokhnaq (a head covering) and adorn themselves with fine jewellery. The men wear the thobe and ghutra and egal (traditional men’s dress). It is a day when families visit each other; children are given money and sweets, and everyone lets their hair down. The tradition of Garangao goes back to our ancestors, and is more of a cultural practice than a religious one. Also, it is seen to be significant as it brings a day of happiness for every person whether young or old.

Interestingly, there are also traditional Garangao songs which are sung by children in groups as they wander through the neighbourhood collecting sweets, candy and nuts in their little sweet pouches. Garangao holds special importance for children because they are able to dress in colourful outfits, learn about folklore and have a positive and fun experience during the month of Ramadan. Traditional games such as Tagyah (tug-of-war), Dahouri (wheel pushing), Gaiss (hopscotch) plus Gallinah and Natou are all played by families and the games give the children a taste of the traditional experience. Also, there are special decorations, traditional souks with plenty of events, and great food such as: Jarish, Harees, Khanfaroosh and Lugaimat to name but a few. When it comes to understanding the origins of Garangao, very little is actually known. However, Abdulaziz explained that according to Um Khalaf, a renowned storyteller from Qatar, Garangao is a celebration which was created for young children as reward for successfully memorizing 15 chapters of the Holy Quran. Abdulaziz went on to explain that young children really look forward to Garangao due to the fact that they have been fasting for 14 days and so when the special night arrives, it’s a chance for them to play games, sing songs, tell stories, dress up and compete to see who has collected the most sweets. Over the decades Garangao and Ramadan have intertwined and with its ambiguous origins, GCC citizens have come to accept it as a form of cultural celebration which strengthens the relationship of children with their friends, family and their neighbourhoods. In addition, it is also a time when children memorize the Holy Quran and therefore are rewarded with sweets and goodies. n

By Antony Antoniou Selected photography by Jessie Palanca

With Qatar and Britain possessing a long and intertwined history, QH was keen to sit down with Britain’s new ambassador H.E. Ajay Sharma and hear his thoughts on his new posting and what he hopes to achieve whilst in the Kingdom. QH: Your Excellency, you have represented Britain’s interests in Turkey, Russia, France and many other parts of the world. If I’m not mistaken, this is your first year in Qatar. How are you finding it? AS: I have been here six months now. Frankly, it’s been great, I think it’s a place which is dynamic, full of variety, full of opportunity and I’m finding it fascinating, getting to grips with all of Qatar’s ambitious projects. Also, trying to understand how the UK can support these projects and working in partnership with Qatar on delivering them is a key aspect to my work here. I’m continually evaluating how we can work together to promote a positive relationship between our two nations, which builds on the excellent history and contacts we already have. QH: What does your work entail as an ambassador? AS: My job essentially is to promote UK-Qatar relations. I try and make sure that this actually means something in practice. It ranges from delivering messages or explaining to people what the UK is like as a place, what its values are and what its approach is to certain issues. It’s about explaining what the UK has to offer Qatar and the wider region and that might be in the area of business, diplomacy, defence, education or culture. It’s also about understanding Qatar, trying to understand what people here want, what they think, so that people in the UK can better understand Qatar and as a result, enhance cooperation between our governments on the key foreign and security issues and between

our people, whether young or old, in business or in education, in culture or in science etc. Without that understanding, the cooperation doesn’t happen as deeply and as effectively as we would like it to happen. Diplomacy is about understanding countries and explaining your own. It’s still about building relationships with people and giving them, on a personal but also on a professional level, a sense that you have a shared objective which is a belief in partnership between countries. QH: In your role as an ambassador, what have been some of the cultural highlights so far in Qatar? AS: Naturally, I’ve been to the Museum of Islamic Art and seen the beautiful building and its amazing collection. I saw the Luc Tyumen’s Intolerance Exhibition at the Al Riwaq Gallery. I have also been to the Anima Gallery and seen some of the exhibitions there. We have also had Hamlet here with the Globe Travelling Company, I’ve been to see the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and of course we had the British Festival which was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase here in Qatar what Britain can offer culturally. The British Festival included some Shakespeare related events; we had an English opera called Alfred, music and lots more. Also, I have been participating in some of the Qatari cultural events such as the Halal Festival at Katara which was great; I have participated in one or two things in the desert, so I’ve tried to acquire a better understanding of Qatari and other cultures here as well. QH: The British Embassy has done many cultural events & activities in collaboration with others here in the past. Is there anything coming up that we should know about? AS: As an embassy we will always be supporting and working on bringing British cultural events here to Qatar. We will work with British institutions, British artists to bring more British culture here. That’s one of my priorities; I want to do more to support that connection between Qatar and the UK in the area of culture. Also, there are a lot of Qataris who spend a lot of time in the UK, and now with the direct flight to Birmingham, many Qataris can also have a Shakespeare experience in Stratford upon Avon.

COMMUNITY

However, I have to say, I feel really privileged to be able to access some great culture right here in Doha, it’s literally on your doorstep. QH: Please tell us why these events are important from your perspective? AS: Because I think art and culture, just like history and tradition is about who we are, culture is about who we are. It’s about how we approach life, it’s about our values and I think it’s important to share that and communicate that. Diplomacy isn’t just about diplomats, diplomacy is fundamentally about the connection between countries, and that’s about the connection between people and of course culture matters to people. QH: What would you say are the important qualities a good diplomat should possess? AS: The first thing I would say is that you need to have a strong sense of curiosity and a willingness to learn. You need to have a strong curiosity for people, countries and ideas so you can better understand a place. If you don’t have those qualities, then you can’t provide the advice, the analysis in order to take forward the relationship with a country. The willingness to learn and accept that there will be things which you don’t know is key. There is a sense of apprenticeship in being a diplomat, and linked to that is a sense of patience. It’s important as a diplomat to have energy and drive and ambitions but also it’s important to have patience, and be able to recognise that things take time and that your ability to achieve the results you want will grow over time as your skills and understanding grows. Finally I would also add a sense of enjoyment in communicating with people is crucial. QH: Is there a set time that an ambassador stays in a country? AS: Normally, ambassadors do around three to four years in a country depending on the country. In some cases, it’s quite hard to let go because you’ve started a process and you want to see it through.

QH: Finally, as the British ambassador to Qatar, what do you hope will be your legacy? AS: My role as the British ambassador is to promote UK-Qatar relations. I want to take it one stage further and actually turn that good feeling that Qataris have about the UK into something more concrete. That’s what I would like to do over the next three to four years, so, whether its education, culture, defence, science, or regional political issues, I want to turn that positivity about the relationship into concrete cooperation for the benefit of Qataris and the British people. My legacy is obviously to leave the relationship in an even better place than when I found it. So this means more examples of cooperation which are deeper and stronger but also I think there is a second element. I want the next generation of Qataris to feel as positive about the UK as their parents do or their grandparents did. I want people here to feel that the UK is their first partner of choice and that’s really my ambition. Ask me in a few years whether I think I’ve delivered it. n

A Time For Giving

A sense of togetherness during Ramadan

Words and images courtesy of Shahmim Akram

Ramadan is a month of dedication and self-sacrifice, but there is more to it than just fasting. QH learns more about the charitable actions Muslims are obliged to observe during the holy month and beyond.

R

amadan is the month when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, as they look to symbolically cleanse themselves and lead more pious lives. It is also the month for increased charitable donations and good deeds, with many locals and residents getting involved in Ramadan charity projects.

Zakat - Charitable requirements Charity is an essential element of worship in Islam and most Muslims are obliged to give

money to charity in the form of an annual Zakat. Its literal meaning is ‘blessing’ and it helps to purify a worshipper’s wealth. Widely considered to be a redistribution tax, it helps to transfer money from certain individuals to those in need. Zakat calculations can be quite complex but it’s approximately 2.5% of an individual’s net savings. Most people donate directly to charitable organisations who will distribute the money through structured aid programmes. Although it is not necessary for Muslims to pay their Zakat during Ramadan, many choose to do so for the increased spiritual rewards. In addition, all Muslims are required to pay Zakat Al Fitr during Ramadan. This is a nominal amount and is usually paid by the head of the household before Eid prayers, with the money going towards helping needy members of the community during Eid.

Volunteering in Qatar During Ramadan Qatar’s registered charities require volunteers to help with their local aid programmes. An excellent example of this is the Ramadan Iftar Tents organised by organisations such as the Qatar Red Crescent (QRC). Last year the QRC served food to 3,000 individuals daily at their main tent in the neighbourhood of Old Ghanim in Doha. However, these tents are open to all and you are not required to be a fasting Muslim to receive the food provided. In a previous statement, QRC’s Director of Administrative Affairs, Nayef Bin Faisal AlMohannadi, emphasised that tents are “...open for all visitors, especially expats, who constitute much of Qatar’s society…Both Muslims and non-Muslims are welcome, we never discriminate”. The charities rely on public donations to help pay for the meals, which are cooked by local restaurants. They also require volunteers to help set up the tents, hand out food, and help to clean up after the

The simple act of giving can resonate for a long time!

such as Iftar distribution boxes, Charity collection drives and visiting the needy within the community. meal. Volunteers also help with the packing and distributing of Iftar meal packs which contain food, dates and drinks. These meal packs are distributed across the city to construction and municipality workers at the Corniche and the Industrial Area. There are also projects which are aimed at increasing civic responsibility. The Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) and the Eid Charity Association hand out snack boxes to drivers at Iftar time. Leftover food is also collected from wedding functions and similar events so as to reduce food wastage - a lesson for us all. Young people can get involved with charity programmes too through the Youth Company which was formed as a social enterprise encouraging youth development. The organisation encourages volunteers to give their time and efforts to community projects which encourage a shared sense of civic responsibility. Their annual 7asanat Olympics recruit volunteers to help with Ramadan initiatives

Another youth organisation, Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) arranges an annual Ramadan food project to help needy families in Qatar. Last year ROTA volunteers packed and distributed 200 food packages containing basics staples such as flour, pasta, lentils and cooking oil. They also renovated local classrooms, visited elderly residents and children, and hosted Iftars for workers. However, charity shouldn’t only be reserved for Ramadan - we can all take one small step. There are many excellent humanitarian initiatives that need help throughout the year. Qatar Charity’s Tayf Programme collects charity donations of goods such as clothes, toys, and furniture. And we shouldn’t forget our four-legged animal friends either Qatar Animal Welfare Society always needs food donations and volunteers who can help to look after the animals including walking the dogs. You can also work with local community groups to make meal or toiletry packs to hand out to the

less fortunate in your neighbourhood. Whilst on an individual basis you can hand out water bottles to outdoor workers, and share a few words to help create a better community spirit. n If you are interested in learning more about the charities mentioned please see their individual websites for more information. Best Of Both Academic Worlds Words and selected images courtesy of Rubina Singh

Gone are the days when the dream of higher education for the people of Qatar could only be realised overseas. With the Qatar National Vision 2030, the country has made major strides in the area of education; QH took a look at one such institution - the Hamad Bin Khalifa University to find out more.

F

rom a time when Qatari nationals wanting a higher education had to travel abroad to now possessing some of the world’s finest universities in Qatar, the country’s education landscape has transformed drastically in recent years.

With increased wealth in Qatar on an upward trend, there has simultaneously been an expansion in options for quality higher education within the country. The crème de la crème of higher education institutions including Ivy League universities have found a welcoming home in Qatar, specifically with regards to the ambitious initiative that is, Qatar Foundation (QF). In the last decade, a lot has changed and continues to change, with the wider world starting to take notice of Qatar and its institutional progress. Qatar can now boast of its very own home-grown university within Qatar Foundation – the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), which is dedicated to the legacy created by the Former Emir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in the development of Qatar, and his wife, HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, whose contribution towards

46 QH June 2016 - FINAL.indd 46

education in Qatar and beyond, is recognised and respected around the world. HBKU delivers undergraduate and graduate programmes through its College of Science and Engineering, College of Law and Public Policy, College of Public Health, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, and its College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It also provides unparalleled opportunities for research and scholarship through its various research institutes, and its Centre of Executive Education delivers customised programmes for the business community of Qatar and the region, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. The 1st of May this year, saw some 111 students become HBKU’s newest graduates at a ceremony presided over by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation and HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, the Vice Chairperson and CEO of QF. Committed to delivering multidisciplinary research education that is locally relevant and globally recognized, this year’s graduation ceremony saw 55% Qataris gain their diplomas, an increase from 48% in 2015, and included representatives from 29 countries; not a mean achievement by anyone’s standards. “Our aim is to make HBKU locally relevant but also internationally recognised” said Dr. Hasnah, President of HBKU, emphasising that the university is building its foundations upon unique collaborations with local and international partners. He went on to emphasise his main aim of expanding the overall vision of HBKU, “We would like students to be able to access research on real life problems and not just for the sake of research. We will produce graduates who are not only studying about topics academically, writing their thesis, and working in a lab but are also involved in cutting edge research even before they graduate from their respective programmes in our partner universities,” Touching upon the direction the University is moving toward in the near future, Dr Hasnah hints, “We understand that basic academic areas are essential and our partner universities in Education City are taking care of it, but we also want to look into the needs of the future and that is going to be the focus at HBKU. You will see innovative ways of education delivery, with more and more involvement online and a great deal of work being performed in-lab, rather than class room style education only”. Indeed, it seems now that Qataris and residents can take advantage of some great universities with some great courses. For Qatari students looking for top-notch education but not the air miles, Qatar now has the best of both worlds right at your doorstep. n

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Life After Exams By Dr. Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College Images courtesy of Doha College

After the intense experience that is school exams, some students can lose focus or simply lose motivation. Thankfully, Doha College has some great advice to help you keep sight of your goals, stay engaged and motivated.

O

nce exams are over, students justifiably expect that their lives will return over-night to a pressure-free and less intense state of affairs. However, it’s not as straightforward as this. Declining levels of adrenaline - a hormone that keeps students on full alert for a number of weeks now, will make the return to normality just that little bit more challenging. With too much time suddenly on your hands, an unfamiliar lack of purpose, a state of euphoria punctuated by anticipation anxiety over the examination results (if you did well), or downright depression (if you didn’t do so well) – all makes for a state of mind that requires a bit of managing to tackle it in the best possible way. Well-being websites abound in advice recommending sleep, exercise, hobbies, nature etc. and of course, these are all excellent ideas to use in the aftermath of any stressful time. However, with the exam period over, there are a few other things we can do that will help with the post-exam slump, whilst continuing to help us climb towards success. Ride the motivation wave and use that excess energy in ways that will benefit your chosen path and in the end will make you stand out from the crowd. Consider some of these below as a way to continue your momentum and energy after exam time:

• Enrol into pre-university summer camps. Many universities organise resident or non-resident programmes that include academic classes, excursions, preparation advice and wider skills sessions, combined with time to relax and meet friends from around the world.

Work experience can be a great opportunity to learn and impress.

• Sign up for work experience. There is no better way to find out what work will feel like other than actually doing it. This may prove quite an awakening for some, and a very useful one at that. • Develop an online portfolio. For anyone hoping to make a career in a creative field, putting their work out for public consumption is a must. Write a blog, create a photo gallery, curate your YouTube content, and make use of social media to bring your creations to as large an audience as possible. • Work as a volunteer. Take the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around you, while developing new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. • Join clubs or societies that share your interests and that will assist you with the all-important networking. We live in times when university graduation rates rise continuously, reaching 38% in the United Kingdom, 40% in South Korea and the USA, 45% in Japan and 51% in Canada. When you start applying for university, how you will you stand out from the competition? Good results in your examinations will certainly help, but, universities are also looking for extra activities or hobbies. You need to ask yourself why the university should choose you. This is where using your summer and holidays effectively is important. At Doha College we ensure our students get their first choice universities by encouraging all our students to take part in structured extra-curricular activities such as Model United Nations, Duke of

Edinburgh Awards, World Challenge, Sporting teams and creative classes. All these activities help students express their individuality and convince the world and the universities of their unique worth. So make this summer work for you, use your extra time to grow your personality in the direction where you want to take your life, and be your own valuable, inimitable self. n

house with the correct food and prep accordingly so on day one of weaning you are ready to go!

The delicate balancing act of weaning newborns can be a challenging time. How exactly does one go about the whole thing? QH offers up some advice on how to transition smoothly and avoid any potential issues.

First Flavours

I

n the early days, when babies only require milk, it can actually feel easy getting into a routine so naturally but when it’s time to introduce proper food, suddenly the task in front of you can seem quite daunting. All those new colours, flavours, smells and textures for a baby to try, can often open up a whole new side to your little one that you mightn't have experienced yet– watch them giggle as they try banana for the first time, or perhaps wince at the taste of broccoli (hopefully not!). The World Health Organisation recommends feeding your baby breast milk exclusively for the first six months of their lives. Of course, there are circumstances where formula milk is used instead and some babies will be required to wean onto solid food before they hit the six-month mark. Generally though, it is more than likely that you will not have to wean your baby before four months due to internal developments still taking place. So whenever the time comes to start introducing solid food, it’s best to understand a basic rule of thumb – food is fun until they’re one! Milk will still be the dominant provider of nutrition to your baby so keep on providing them 3-4 milk feeds a day until they celebrate their first birthday. Solid food for the moment, will offer new tastes and textures to the baby and allow them to get used to eating at set mealtimes and eventually independently.

Wean, Wean, Wean During the first year of life, babies grow rapidly and most will have tripled their birth weight by their first birthday. To ensure that your baby grows at the right rate, develops strong bones and teeth, firm muscles and healthy tissue, it is essential that the food you give your baby has the right balance of nutrients. It is suggested that once your baby can hold their own neck up and sit independently, they can then sit in a highchair to enjoy their meals. Always stay with your baby when feeding them. Research has shown that babies, who are allowed to play with food in the beginning, will find more interest and confidence in trying new foods later on. To begin with, weaning from milk to solids takes time and practice. Remember, your baby has only ever digested milk so be patient and build their serving sizes slowly. You will need a highchair, bibs, bowls, spoons, baby wipes and it would be a good idea to stock your

It is advised that you offer your baby one new food type for the first three days of weaning. At this stage it is only a very small amount of food (one teaspoon) that they will try and the small quantity will allow them to get used to the sensation of new food. Also, this way you can easily monitor and identify any allergies. When prepping food at home, steam or boil food then use a food processor to ensure the food is pureed and smooth enough for your baby to swallow safely. You can also buy readymade pouches too and these can be found in many places around Doha (stocked in Carrefour, Monoprix and Megamart). Marks and Spencer also offer their own brand of baby puree.

First Foods (puree only) • Sweet Potato • Carrot • Courgette • Swede • Cauliflower • Broccoli • Apple • Pear • Peach • Mango • Banana • Baby Rice • Baby Porridge Tips and Tricks: • Always puree foods for a baby until they are 7-8 months old

• Begin your weaning at the 11 a.m./12noon feed time

• Mix breast milk or formula milk with puree Weaning by Weeks • Week 1 – offer 1 teaspoon of new flavours at 11am • Week 2 – offer 2-4 teaspoons of new and existing flavours at 11 a.m.

• Week 3 – introduce a 5 p.m. dinner with 2-4 teaspoons of existing flavours

• Week 4 – introduce a 7 a.m. breakfast of baby porridge; continue with lunch and dinner of new and existing flavours. By week 5, your baby should be able to enjoy 10-15 teaspoons per meal and all food should be digesting well. If so, you can start to introduce dairy and protein in the coming weeks following the same principle of a few teaspoons to be sure they are able to tolerate the new food. From 8 months on the baby can enjoy milk from a sippy cup or beaker to get them used to weaning from the bottle.

Day by day… • 6 a.m. – Milk • 7 a.m. - Porridge with pureed fruit • 11.30 a.m. – Pureed vegetables • 2.30 p.m. – Milk • 5 p.m. – Baby rice with pureed vegetables • 6.30 p.m. - Milk n 51

FOOD & DINING

By Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca

Tucked away in Souq Waqif is the ornate restaurant of Parisa, a beautiful Iranian eatery that has delighted visitors with its authentic Persian dishes. The team at QH made sure they built up an appetite before delving into this ancient and rich cuisine.

I

ranian cooking is heir to no less than two and a half thousand years of saffron- and rosewaterinfused history. The foods of the courts of ancient Persia included perfumed stews flavoured with cinnamon, mint, and pomegranates; elaborate stuffed fruits and vegetables; and tender roasted meats - dishes that have influenced the cooking of countries as far-flung as India and Morocco. In many ways, Persian food is the original mother cuisine. With this at the forefront of our minds we sit down and order a number of fine dishes. Whilst we wait we take in, what can only be described, as a kaleidoscope of colours from the intricate decor that surrounds us. With beautiful Iranian tiles, small coloured mirrors and paintings depicting scenes of ancient Persian life, every glance fills our eyes with a deep sense of history and culture.

The layout of the restaurant is that of an indoor courtyard and a water feature takes up the middle of the room. The tables surround the fountain and from the ceiling hang elegant chandeliers. There are also more private tables located on the second floor that look out over the magnificent courtyard. For our appetisers we start with the Salad-e Shirazi, which is a fresh cube diced salad containing cucumber, tomato, onion and lemon dressing. The Zeytoon Parvarde arrives next, this dish has the perfect texture and the taste is beautifully balanced between the bitternessof the olives and sweet pomegranate syrup which is lightly drizzled on top. The Salad Bademjan, Kashko Bademjan and the Khoresht-e Gheymeh arrive all together. The Salad is my personal favourite, the fried aubergine splashed with fresh yogurt, crispy garlic, opinions and pomegranate is so delicious we order a second helping. The Kashko Bademjan is yet another aubergine master piece but this is a hot appetiser with sun dried yogurt, mint, caramelised garlic and onions made into little rolls. Another hot appetiser appears in the form of a little hot-pot dish called Khoresht-e Gheymeh. This is a lamb stew in tomato gravy with yellow lentils

and fries. For me the tomato sauce is so tasty, the ingredients, infused subtly and with intelligence. At this point all the team is full to bursting and a mini break insues as we let our food settle. This is a chance to take a look at the elegant private room which has been used by high dignitaries in the past. The room reminds me of The Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, but an Iranian version, of course.

Persian splendor in all its majesty

Sizzling fare that stays in the memory

fact that it’s the first dish to be finished by the QH team is all the proof one needs, and if we weren’t so full, we would order another. The chicken marinated in yogurt is a close second by the way. For dessert, I try the Falude-Ye Shirazi, a mixture of frozen vermicelli sorbet and rose water. I found it to be a very interesting collaboration and the rose water in particular doesn’t dominate the overall flavour, which is how we like it. A huge mixed grill is placed in front of us; it’s filled with Kabab Soltami (a beef fillet and saffron lamb kebab), Kebab-e Jooje Masti (chicken breast marinated in yogurt) and Kabab Shishlik (mouthwatering lamb chops with saffron, onion and black pepper). Thoughtfully, we are provided with a small table-grill to ensure the food stays nice and warm. All of the meat is tender and packed with taste, for me though; the lamp chops are the clear winner. The

We also order the Brulee Zaferan Bastany-e Zereshk, it’s a mouthful to say but certainly worth it. The saffron infused crème brûlée with coffee flavoured ice cream is also a strong dish. The creaminess of the brûlée is just superb and very moreish. Lastly we try the Shole Zard which is made up of saffron rice pudding, pistachio and ground almonds. Yet another instant hit!

Parisa Souq Waqif is clearly one of the best Iranian restaurants in Qatar, and its great location at the centre of Souq Waqif only adds to its charm. I can highly recommend it and will most definitely be going back for seconds. n PARISA SOUQ WAQIF Location: Souq Waqif Ramadan Timings: 6:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Average Meal Price: • QR 28 – QR 35, appetizers • QR 68 – QR 95, main courses • QR 24, desserts Licensed: No Smoking: Yes, outside Shisha terrace Contact Info: 4441-1494

Go over the bridge and into a world of mouth-watering Chinese fare

By Marisela Paesano Photography by Jessie Palanca

Okay, so we don't have a Chinatown in Doha yet. But that doesn't mean you can't find delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine. You just have to know where to look. QH visits Ruby Wu’s at the Radisson Blu with plenty of anticipation as we dive right into the culinary delights of China.

T

he restaurant itself is relatively small and shares the space with an Indian eatery, which is quite a unique concept that I haven’t seen before in Doha. The ambience is warm and welcoming. The decor brings to life Chinese culture with red lanterns and ornate sculptures which adorn the open plan layout. The staff are friendly and helpful and I have to say that the ladies look very pretty in their traditional Chinese red dresses which, of course, adds to the look and feel of the place. From the appetizers menu section, we chose a variety of things to share; shrimp Dim Sum, deep fried prawns with mayonnaise and finally, the delicious roasted Peking duck.

The famous duck dish traces its origins back to the Chinese capital-Beijing, and is considered one of China’s national dishes. It’s finely sliced with a crispy layer of delicious skin which I just can’t get enough of. It comes with wheat-based pancakes, sweet bean sauce and a heap of spring onions and cucumbers. Dim Sum is a very popular dish in Chinese cuisine, literally meaning "to touch your heart”. The Dim Sum consists of a variety of dumplings, steamed and full of different fillings. The restaurant offered us the pan fried version which went down a storm. The final appetizer was the deep fried prawns with mayonnaise which arrived fresh and crisp. It was

Delicious stir-fried sliced beef goes down a treat.

RUBY WU’S hard to refrain from ordering another portion, let me tell you!

Location: Salwa Road, Radisson Blu Hotel, Ground Floor Timings: 6:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m. daily

For the main course we ordered the sautéed seafood and broccoli in Szechuan sauce, stir-fried sliced beef with mushroom and broccoli in oyster sauce, fried egg noodles with duck, prawn and vegetables (Hong Kong style) and Yang Zhou fried rice with shrimp, egg, chicken and vegetables. The stir-fried sliced beef with mushroom and broccoli in oyster sauce had deep, intense flavours which packed a punch, very yummy indeed. The Sautéed seafood and broccoli in Szechuan sauce was showered with chillies as well as a rich sweet and sour sauce. It was devoured within seconds of arrival. The fried egg noodles were extremely delicate and the duck was sweet and tender, the flavour was nicely lifted by the garlic and the spiciness was just right. Last but not least, the Yang Zhou fried rice with shrimp, egg, chicken and vegetables was also really good and I highly recommend it.

After such a generous feast, we couldn’t even contemplate dessert; however, after a lengthy break we soldiered on and ordered the Vanilla Parfait, a mixture of passion fruit cubes and warm ganache tartlet. Also we ordered the Spiced Crepes which contained caramelized pineapple and honey ice-cream. I have to say, it was the first time I’ve been bowled over by Chinese desserts. A lovely surprise. Ruby Wu's is clearly one of the best Chinese culinary experiences we’ve had in Qatar and we'll certainly be going back for more. n

A touch of Turkish class

QH: Would you go back? Why/why not?

Word Of Mouth Photography by Jessie Palanca

This column is part of a monthly contest where we send one of our readers to experience a meal in a restaurant. It’s our way of giving the local community a voice within our pages. This month Ioana Cristina El Watidy takes a trip into the world of Turkish cuisine with a visit to Emirgan Sütis. Here is her review. QH: What did you order? ICEW: We ordered à la carte...

Appetizers • Cheese Rolls: For our appetizers, we decided to have something which was nice and simple, so we went with the Cheese Rolls. They were very tasty and the portion was a decent size. Also the presentation was good, very rustic and honest. Main Course • Chicken Soup: The soup was simply delicious and had a nice consistency to it. There were nice big chunks of chicken which were very soft and nicely seasoned. • Beef Lokum: This dish was basically grilled slices of tender beef that came with a potato covered in yummy melted cheese. Also there was a gorgeous spinach side dish that came with it. • Sarma Beyti Kebab: Out of all of the dishes we ate, this had the best presentation by far. The meat

was parcelled within pastry bread slices which were placed in circular ring on the plate. In the middle was a large dollop of fresh yogurt, grilled tomato and green chilies gave the dish a bit of spice and added flavour.

QH: Were the prices reasonable? ICEW: Yes, very. For the level of quality which we experienced, I would say that it was worth every Riyal. Authentic Turkish cuisine that had me feeling as if I were in Istanbul but without the price of an air ticket. Totally worth it. QH: Describe the ambiance. ICEW: The atmosphere was perfect, the Turkish décor was nicely done, it had a sense of Ottoman history and was complimented by the traditional music. There is also the option to sit outside which can be nice at different times of the year.

ICEW: I am a regular customer, coming back is always a pleasure. The consistency with regards to quality of service and food means I can come here and know that I will be treated well and I will eat some delightful Turkish food. QH: Favourite thing about the restaurant? ICEW: Reminds me of food back home. Romania had been under Ottoman influence for many years, we have similarities with regard to food so I know when something has been cooked well and therefore I can really appreciate the cooking here at Emirgan Sütis. QH: Least favourite thing about the restaurant? ICEW: I can’t think of anything that is wrong with the place. QH: Was there a special touch or flair to the experience? ICEW: Yes. The traditional way the food is presented on the plate. QH: Could the overall experience be improved? If so, how?

QH: Describe the quality of the food. ICEW: Fresh, vibrant and tasty, the beef in particular was perfectly done. Some of the best beef I have eaten which isn’t located in a five star Hotel in Doha. They also have some of the best Turkish deserts in Doha! Well worth a try.

ICEW: Perhaps increasing the variety of the menu a little bit more. n For more information on Emirgan Sütis visit www.sutis.com.tr/eng/index.asp or call 4037-5287

QH: Describe the quality of the service. ICEW: A modern culinary experience of Turkish hospitality. Excellent! The restaurant is well run and has a positive atmosphere. We didn’t have to wait long for our food and the staff quickly carried out any request that we had throughout our meal.

In Search Of The Next Grandmaster

By Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca

Ladies chess enthusiast kholoud Al Khelaifi has been working hard behind the scenes trying to encourage more young girls to take up the game of chess. QH went to meet her and find out what it takes to create the next female Qatari Grandmaster. QH: Kholoud thank you for inviting us today to the Girls Chess Club. So, please can you tell me a little about how you started to play chess?

hesitant. Or the parents will often let their daughters play up to a certain age and then request them to stop. So there have been some barriers but we are being patient and trying to explain and show parents the benefits of chess. QH: So how can you overcome these kinds of problems? KA: Well, like I said, we try to introduce the parents to the game and show them how good it can be for their daughters’ development. chess can help young people improve their decision making, discipline, strategic thinking etc. It’s good for the child’s future, especially if they can eventually become a Grandmaster. They will have really good careers and get to travel the world also. QH: So this is really a generational issue?

KA: Well back when I first got involved in 2002, we had a big group of Qatari girls playing, roughly 10 to 15 who really took it seriously. We took part in many tournaments such as the Asian Games, Arab Games, the Olympiads, Open tournaments all around the world. That was golden time when a lot of Qatari ladies did well and actually won medals. Most of those girls had a lot of titles and good ratings. Now, when I go to schools to try and recruit new girls into the game, the parents can still be a bit

KA: For sure, with my children I will obviously be more open-minded about this. I have seen with my own eyes the benefits that chess can give. There so many positives. QH: So maybe that’s the reason why it’s been hard to find or develop a female Grandmaster? KA: Well three years ago, we (Qatar Chess Association) identified this issue, so now we are

trying very hard to nurture young talent. Of course it will take us time; you cannot create a Grandmaster overnight. So over the past year, I went to lots of different schools who have predominantly Qatari students to try and find some girls who showed an interest. From the ages of 6 to 8, this is the best time to start but it’s been hard to gain access to the schools. We only started this initiative recently, so hopefully in the near future we will start to see some positive results coming to fruition. QH: So what’s the timescale that we’re looking at before we see the next Qatari female Grandmaster? KA: I think maybe in the next five years, it will take time. Its not easy. I found two Qatari sisters who are very interested in chess and their parents are supporting them because they see that it has many benefits. Also chess is a game where women can still be covered, in many ways, chess is an ideal game for Arab ladies. Personally, I think we need to have a big PR campaign about chess. This will bring more children, both boys and girls into the sport; I believe that this would really help our cause. The Association has

hours and hours of practice are required to become a Grandmaster

made positive steps by engaging the youth through social media which is encouraging. QH: What are the main qualities that a young person needs to become a Grandmaster? KA: When I teach children, the first thing I look for is how enthusiastic they are about the game. If they show an interest, that’s half the battle. Obviously key things such as intelligence, competitiveness, patience, the ability to think ahead, confidence, a good memory and an intense desire to win are all very important attributes. And of course a strong work ethic, so that they practice as often as possible. QH: So, are there any important tournaments coming up? KA: Yes, on the September 1st there will be the 42nd Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE, and it will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. All of the best players from around the world will be there. The event happens every two years. So we will have five men and five women representing Qatar.

kholoud Al Khelaifi heads up the Ladies Chess Club

QH: So how many ladies chess clubs are there in Doha? KA: At the moment we only have one club for ladies but the plan is to eventually open more centres but we have a lot of things that we want to do, so we have to take it one step at a time. I want to take this opportunity to invite young girls to come to our club, you are most welcome. Both Qataris and expats can come, they just have to pay the membership fee and then they can start to learn and enjoy a very fun and rewarding game. n GIRLS CHESS CLUB Location: Abu Hamour Membership: QR 300 for non-qataris Contacts: 4469-2646, 4469-4349 www.qatarchess.com

Its angular design and achingly cool hue are sure to turn heads

By Annabel Rooney Images courtesy of Alfardan Sports Motors

There are many moments in one's life that are cherished such as graduating university, getting married or watching your child take their first steps. Then there is the moment you first sit inside a Ferrari. QH hitched a ride inside the prancing horse’s latest offering, the drop top Ferrari 488 Spider, the most powerful ever mid-rear-engine V8.

C

ruising around Dubai’s streets among other vehicles is a stark reminder of just how special the Ferrari 488 Spider truly is. From the outer detailing to the inner workings of the powerful engine, this is a car like no other.

The sound is seductive but never invasive, with both volume and clarity increasing as the engine instantly responds to the accelerator pedal, reinforcing the notion that this car has some serious pedigree.

From the aluminium space frame chassis and body shell to the new turbo- charged V8, aerodynamics that reconcile the need for greater down force with reduced drag along with the specific cabin air flow demands of an open-top car, and vehicle dynamics that render it fast, agile and instantly responsive. One touch of the pedal, no matter your speed, and you’re met with almost unbelievable acceleration and power. No explanation is needed as to why it’s one of fastest supercars in its segment.

The Ferrari 488 Spider’s interior is very similar to that of the coupe. Featured is a three-spoke steering wheel with all of the standard Ferrari buttons, a two-tone dashboard, sports seats, a red Ferrari revcounter, and loads of high-end materials.

Lowering the car hood propels you from zero to hero, and most importantly, gets you closer to that glorious rumble of the 3902 cc turbocharged V8 engine.

Should you need to drive with the top up, the rear glass can still be lowered to fully appreciate the engine soundtrack.

The retractable roof is also the same as the 458 Spider, a two-part electronically folding top. The rear glass window can be adjusted to one of three positions to optimise wind flow when the top is down.

Sporty dashboard that leaves you under no illusions as to what you are driving

This model is designed for the streets, able to corner effortlessly at high speed and it affords one the ability to let rip on the highway. Its performance levels are nothing short of extraordinary boasting a maximum power output of 670 CV combined with maximum torque of 760 Nm at 6750 rpm.

Looks just as good from the back

The Ferrari 488 Spider is a smooth ride, enabling its driver to feel like a king from the moment the engine is started to the sad moment it is switched off. Unrivalled, unsurpassable and beautiful are the only words to describe this automotive beast. So the moral of this story is, if you have a few thousand lying around, put it to good use and buy the Ferrari 488 Spider, because you know it makes sense. n

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Ramadan Work Outs By Rowad Ehlela

With the holy month almost upon us, one of the most frequently asked questions is- how does one train safely during Ramadan? There are many misconceptions and bad advice is often dispensed by those who have little expertise. The team at EVOLVE -Mind/ Body/Soul give you the low-down on physical training during Ramadan and provide you with key tips on getting the most out of your training in a safe way.

W

e must understand that the body during Ramadan undergoes some immense changes that can truly affect performance, from fatigue to nutritional deficiencies, dehydration and also drowsiness. These are natural occurrences during the holy month with a lot of us feeling less energised and therefore less motivated to work out. This is due to a change in your circadian rhythm (your internal body clock) a switch in your breakfast hour and sleeping pattern means your body perceives time a lot differently than what it is used to, meaning that you must reschedule your training regime accordingly. If you are used to training in the morning, then you are running the risk of severe dehydration for the

rest of the day, should you continue this routine during Ramadan. For cardiovascular training such as running, swimming, walking etc. it would prove wise to keep this limited to 45 minute (max) workouts with a medium level of intensity post Iftar. You may also engage in light training prior to Iftar should you wish to train earlier in the day, as many of us have social functions and busy schedules during the evenings in Ramadan. Below are some cardiovascular training tips should you wish to train early.

Cardiovascular Training Tips; Running • No sprinting or high intensity/explosive bursts. • 15-minute low intensity jogging prior to the breaking of your fast (stop if feeling drowsy or unwell). Swimming • Low intensity swimming is a great way to burn calories and maintain body strength (20 minutes of lengths prior Iftar). Walking • 30 minutes of low intensity walking is a great way to circulate oxygen to the body whilst raising the heart rate to safe levels.

Weight Training Ramadan poses a dilemma for those who enjoy weight training. However, it is imperative you avoid heavy weights during the day as you simply do not have enough energy to sustain a workout of that nature. The best time to enjoy weight training is during the night after you've had a good meal

and wait until it has been fully digested. You must also keep this workout short and sweet (around 30-45 minutes) as the body must recover and will struggle to do so, considering the day long fast to follow.

Top Tip For Ramadan If you want to maximise your training safely then the best advice is to work out with a Personal Trainer. They can provide you with professional assistance and can direct you through a sensible Ramadan regime, monitoring your progress throughout the month. It is very easy to lose track of your workouts and perhaps also jeopardise your yearlong training plan. If a personal trainer is not an option, then perhaps working out with a friend who can spot you in the gym and can ensure you are safe at all times throughout your workout, is also a good idea. To round up, emphasises must be put on the importance of eating well during Ramadan and utilising time to consume foods wisely. Keep your training to a minimum time frame with low to medium intensity workouts. Ramadan can offer a great opportunity to try something new such as yoga or swimming which are better suited to your body’s capabilities during the holy month. Stay consistent with your workouts as they will fuel you with the feel-good endorphins you need to keep strong during the month long fast. n Get yourself on-track to optimal health by learning more about EVOLVE -Mind/Body/Soul’s services. Stade de France

Ready, Steady… EURO Words and selected images by John Hunt

On June 10, international football’s ‘second-most important’ tournament gets underway in France. Euro 2016 is set to bring us a summer of great sporting moments; QH has conveniently put together a quick overview of the tournament plus how the Qatar national team can learn a thing or two this summer.

T

he 2016 European Championship (EC), or Euro 2016 for short, runs until July 10 and sees 24 teams face off in pursuit of the Henri Delaunay Trophy. While the EC plays second fiddle to the World Cup in terms of prestige, it has many sufficient selling points of its own and, it could be argued, is superior to FIFA’s global tournament in a couple of respects. Firstly, the ‘surprise factor’. Has there ever been a ‘surprise’ winner in the history of the World Cup? Ever?

Football historians might point you to Uruguay’s defeat of hosts Brazil in the final of the 1950 tournament as somewhat unexpected, but Uruguay have always been a tidy outfit, and are currently a top-10 side in the FIFA rankings. The EC, on the other hand, has thrown up a number of unexpected winners from a competition whose confederation –UEFA, contains many giants of the global game such as Germany, Spain and Italy. We’ve seen winners in the shape of the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic (as Czechoslovakia) and more recently, Denmark (1992) and Greece (2004). Secondly, I’d also posit that, overall, the standard of football throughout the EC tournament is of a higher standard than that of the World Cup, certainly during the group stages. Seventeen of FIFA’s top 25-ranked teams are members of UEFA and, with a smaller number of teams at the finals (24 to the World Cup’s 32), there are fewer ‘dead rubbers’ also. With the above in mind, there’s a palpable sense of excitement ahead of June 10, one that transcends UEFA, as people from across the world settle down in front of their TV’s to watch this glorious tournament.

What sort of tournament can we expect? Almost certainly, an exciting one. From the off, we’re going to see the fast, aggressive, passing style that makes the European domestic leagues and the Champions League the most watched non-national football events on the planet. Lots of goals and a shock or two along the way are more likely than not. In terms of potential winners, though, it’s hard to see past current World Champions, Germany. They’d be my choice (brave of me, I know) simply because they are so strong all over the pitch and they are the consummate ‘big tournament’ team – they so often turn it on when it really matters. Belgium would be my pick for the potential ‘dark horses’ of the competition as they too possess a number of strong players.

Taking a leaf out of Iceland’s book While a suggestion that the Qatar Football Association (QFA) might derive more than just viewing pleasure from Euro 16 may seem tenuous, I would use a single word to reinforce such an argument. That word? Iceland.

80 QH June 2016 - FINAL.indd 80

5/26/16 12:11

In 2014, I interviewed the co-managers of the Iceland national football team who told me they were highly confident that Iceland would qualify for Euro 16. I was slightly sceptical, but, as good as their word, Iceland finished second in their qualification group (including beating The Netherlands both home and away), sealing the country’s first ever appearance at a major tournament.

Spain men's national team lifting the Henri Delaunay Trophy in 2012

So what’s the QFA connection? As I see it, two fold. One, the indigenous populations of Iceland and Qatar are similar: around 300,000 respectively. For that reason alone, it is should prove instructive for the QFA to see how a smaller team performs in such a major championship – because this is where the Qatar national side will find itself in either Russia 2018 (possibly) or in 2022 (definitely, as World Cup hosts). Two, it was only six years ago that Iceland were ranked 112th in the world by FIFA; now they are ranked 35th. Oddly enough, during 2010 Qatar also occupied the 112th ranking spot for a time, and they are now ranked 83rd. Progress, yes, but still plenty more work to be done for the boys donning the maroon and white of Qatar. So it will be educational for the QFA to see how Iceland perform as the smallest-ever country (by population) to qualify for a major tournament such as the Euros. Furthermore, it’s not flippant to suggest that the QFA acknowledge (and, where applicable, adopt) the factors which have seen the Icelanders leap up the FIFA rankings.

Angelos Charisteas heading in the winning goal for Greece in the final against Portugal – Euro 2004

I’ve argued in these pages before that a huge factor behind Iceland’s success is due to the majority of its players plying their trade in overseas leagues. Indeed, in Iceland’s last match (a friendly victory over Greece in March) all 11 starters played their club football in Europe, including a number in the English, German and Italian leagues – locations where they are exposed to greater competition, skill, and the highest standards of coaching and development on the planet. And while Akram Afif remains the sole Qatari international playing in an overseas league (having just recently made the move from Belgium’s secondtier side Eupen to Villarreal CF in Spain), there is something to be learned before the competition even starts! n

QH SENSATIONS

Words by Francesca Cruz Selected images by Francesca Cruz and StephBe

Just eight miles off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, is the pristine nature reserve of Holbox Island. QH ventured to this unspoiled isle to unwind and admire Mother Nature at her prettiest.

A

two-hour drive from Cancun, to the small seaside village of Chiquila is followed by a 20-minute ferry ride, which sees us arriving to the island of Holbox. I hesitate for a minute, pondering if I truly want to reveal this tiny tropical jewel to the rest of the world. No cars are allowed on this Caribbean gem, the residents don’t want to damage the natural environment and I’m just fine with that. You can stroll, as the locals do, without shoes, swim in teal waters and take in the local flora and fauna.

The very second you set foot on the island, a sense of calm and ease envelopes you. The smells of frangipani (a native plant), the sandy paths, the chanting geckos, and the fireflies that illuminate the night sky all give this place an enchanting and magical feel. The locals too are warm and very happy to see faces new and old. With only a handful of thatched-roofed hotels sprinkled across an 11-mile stretch of coastal creamcolored sand, you really do feel as if you’ve left the rest of the world behind. Two of my favorite places to stay whilst visiting Holbox are Las Nubes Hotel, with a wonderful beachfront that puts you in close proximity to the baby pink flamingos. The accommodation is stylish yet earthy and very comfortable. The other place I would recommend is Casa Sandra, a boutique hotel with shabby-chic décor that’s owned and run by a Cuban painter. At night the stucco white building with its billowing pearl white curtains and candlelit entrance is a sight for the romantically inclined. Cradled between the tropical jungle and the vivid blue ocean is the quaint hotel of Villas Paraíso del

Mar, a center point for activity on the island. The service is great and very friendly. This eco-conscious hotel sits on the sand with villas overlooking the ocean and beautiful Balinese beds scattered between the vegetation and beach. Just a five-minute walk on the beach from the hotel and you’ll come upon a charming restaurant called Raices Beach Club & Marina. It’s basically a thatched hut on the beach with plastic chairs and accompanying tables strewn languidly about the place. It serves up some of the very best grilled octopus and fish ceviche on the island. At dusk you can witness an act as old as time as when the fishermen bring in their daily catch—usually Tarpon fish. The sounds of Spanish reggae gently flow out from the jukebox, and the refreshing breeze rising from the surf makes Raices the ideal place to relax and get into the island groove. Another grand spot for both lunch and dinner is Las Panchas. You can rent a golf buggy (hotels assist with reservations), take a golf buggy taxi, or jump on a rental bike to get there. The fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and grilled octopus in Diablo sauce will

Colourful facades and murals give Holbox a playful charm

There you’ll enjoy live salsa music as the fresh sea breeze passes and caresses you. On this island, golf buggies are king and with swaying hammocks, dangling off palm trees I quickly replace thoughts of cramped & congested cities with the peace and quiet of the island. The town is full of larger than life murals due to the annual International Public Art Festival. This year the festival celebrates its third run and artists both, local and international, have given this place a truly vibrant, fun and unique feel.

have you dreaming of this place for years to come. WARNING – be sure to bring your appetite though, as they serve up generous portions at Las Panchas, not that I’m complaining. For a night out on the town, go to La Esquina Caliente (the hot corner) and El Pescador (the fishermen) just a six-minute walk from each other.

Splash about in the tropical waters, zip around in golf buggies, marvel at the massive sea-themed murals, sway to live music played at outdoor joints, make time to go swimming with whale sharks, gaze at the setting sun whilst enjoying fresh ceviche, or just sit on the sand with friends and take in a starry night, Holbox is truly a place to recharge your batteries.

A secret paradise

This island is the kind of destination that people discuss in discreet corners with hushed voices. Those who have traveled here are protective of Holbox—we want to have it remain the fleeting fantasy island that it is: a diamond in the rough. n

Giving Hair A Second Lease Of Life By Marisela Paesano Photography by Jessie Palanca Selected images courtesy of Snips Hair & Beauty Salon

QH spent an afternoon of discovery and fun at Snips Hair & Beauty Salon, pampering ourselves and finding out why this contemporary beauty salon is turning heads with every blowout.

I

've been colouring my hair for over 10 years now and I have to say that it's taken its toll. So, today I’ve come for some much-needed hair and beauty repairs. I came to Snips looking for a hair treatment which could help me restore and renew the health of my

hair. As soon as I arrived, I was introduced to my hairstylist Erick. He is from Malaysia and has been working in the hair industry for over 20 years. As a client, I appreciate his level of product knowledge and professionalism. After a hair consultation, he recommended the new Kérastase collection: Resistance Thérapiste.

Resistance Thérapiste is a breakthrough hair care range that gives damaged, over-processed hair a second chance at life. This collection has a range of hair products that fight the symptoms of damaged hair, from fine weak types to thick hair, or brittle types with split ends. Kérastase expert Erick explained that 50 percent of hair is made up of tiny proteins that link and bond keratin together in the hair called KAPs (keratin associated proteins). When you undergo long-term colouring (like me) or other demanding chemical processes, these proteins eventually disappear and

cause hair structures to collapse. According to Erick, L'Oréal scientists found a way to synthetically add the KAPs that have been lost back into the hair, and this new line is the result. "We are literally giving hair a second life, bringing it back to its lustrous beginnings, and at incredible speeds," Erick told me.

Soin Premier Conditioner Thérapiste The scent was delicately floral, but the texture of this conditioner was a little thinner than I had anticipated.

Bain Thérapiste Out of the three products, I was most impressed by the shampoo's immediate results. I was incredibly surprised with the huge difference the shampoo made to my hair's texture after a single wash! This shampoo is much more concentrated and has more of a glue-like texture than any other product I've ever used.

88 QH June 2016 - FINAL.indd 88

5/26/16 12:12

Masque ThĂŠrapiste This thick and creamy masque had a light, floral scent and a texture that reminded me of whipped body butter. They left it on for about 10 minutes and I was quite surprised by how shiny and smooth my hair was after its application. I will definitely continue to use this product from now on.

Manicure & Pedicure After my hair treatment, I headed to the manicure and pedicure station. A manicure and pedicure is a standard routine which I try to squeeze in at least once a month. After all, well-groomed feet and hands are signs of proper personal hygiene and care. My skilful therapist - Rose offered me a deluxe experience. My session started with the usual cutting, filing and soaking and finished off with a relaxing foot massage and manicure. My afternoon of pampering at Snips was nothing short of spectacular, a clean, professional salon offering top service at a reasonable price. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the level of knowledge and professionalism was very impressive. There’s no doubt that I will be coming back for more. n SNIPS HAIR & BEAUTY SALON Location: Holiday Villa Hotel & Residence City Centre, Al-Muntazah, Doha. Ramadan. Throughout the day, the streets of Doha are very quiet. As soon as the sun sets, the city wakes up and comes alive. Also, traffic increases during the evening so be sure to plan your trips carefully.

For those of you who might be new to Qatar or simply interested in finding out a bit more about Ramadan look no further as QH brings you a small guide on the main aspects of the Holy Month.

Imsak – is another word you may also come across, it means ‘time before the fast begins at dawn’ this is when everybody fuels up by eating and drinking as much as is necessary before the day starts.

So, What Is Ramadan?

The Ramadan Effect

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; it was the month when Allah started to reveal to Mohammed PBUH the divine versus that would eventually be written down as the Quran – the central text of Islam.

When Ramadan starts, your body will also undergo a number of changes, hunger, tiredness, lack of focus and probably dehydration, all of which, can test even the most committed of worshippers. So be sure to keep an eye on your health and if you do have to exercise then do so only moderately.

To observe Ramadan all adult Muslims are required to fast every day from sun rise to sun set, giving up pretty much everything, at least during day light hours. At night time everyone eats yummy traditional dishes around the table with their family so as to be ready for the next day of fasting. Food, water and smoking can’t be consumed, nothing can be taking in. This aspect of Ramadan is very important and is intended to help make the believer a better person. Muslims believe that they live a better, more pious lives whilst fasting. A few days before Ramadan supermarkets are heaving with shoppers looking to stock up for the month ahead. It’s a chance for families to get all the necessary ingredients for the many Ramadan dishes that will be eaten at night.

Breaking The Fast It is tradition that everyone breaks their fast with dates palms and water, so any house you walk into this month, you’re going to see lots and lots of dates! During Ramadan, you may hear people say “where is the Sahra tonight?” (Where is the late night gathering?) Many people stay up late during the holy month as people’s routines and schedules change drastically. Shops around town are closed for large parts of the day and working hours are also changed during

Praying During Ramadan Friday prayers continue as usual but they take on even more significance during Ramadan. There are five daily prayers that Muslims are required to perform, one at sunrise, one around noon, one in the afternoon, one at sunset and one right before you go to bed.

Laylat Al Qadr Essentially this is the night when Mohammed started reciting the Quran and so it is considered to be the holiest night of Ramadan. During the Night of Power/Destiny, as it’s called, prayers are imbued with even more worth, so for Muslims praying on this specific night means that their prayers are even more holy and worth more than normal prayers.

Eid Al Fitr Eid Al Fitr is a holiday marking the end of Ramadan the Islamic holy month of fasting. The religious Eid is a single day during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. On this day you will often hear people say Eid Mubarak which means – have a blessed Eid. These are the main components that feature throughout the holy month of Ramadan. So for those of you looking to get back in touch with your spiritual side or learn about another religion, this is the time to join in and enjoy a demanding but highly rewarding month. Ramadan Kareem. n
