FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF As we usher in the month of November, we also welcome one of the country’s biggest international events, the 4th Doha Tribeca Film Festival kicks off on November 17 with a star-studded lineup and a strong local focus, with screenings held at diverse venues such as Katara and Souq Waqif. Our cover story this month, QH brings you the full schedule so you don’t miss a minute of the action.

We would also like to take this opportunity to issue a retraction for an article published in our October issue in the Arts and Culture section. In the ‘Film Fever’ story we incorrectly identified the Film Festival as being in its sixth year, when in fact it is in its fourth. November is also International Diabetes Awareness Month and in our Community section we have info on services offered by the Qatar Diabetes Association and some great events to look forward to for World Diabetes Day on November 14. Also, the 2nd Annual Qatar Choice Awards were held at the Al Gassar Ballroom on October 17 and it was a spectacular event. Instituted in 2010, the Awards recognize and honour the talents and contributions of those in Doha’s hospitality industry. Now in its second year, the Awards continue to grow as one of the country’s most anticipated events. The efforts of all those involved in staging the event shone through immensely. We at Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the winners, nominees and organizers. Editor’s Corner A lot of people come up to me and ask what it takes to put Qatar Happening together each month. “Is it fun?” “Is it a lot of work?” “Do you never sleep?” Well, the answer to all of those is “Yes!” We have a great team here at QH, with everyone sharing the same passion for the magazine and putting in the same dedication each and every month in order to get our latest issue to print. This month I thought it would be nice to acknowledge those who work so hard behind the scenes here in the QH offices and tell you a little bit about everyone’s role. First of all, each week a new deadline looms, so myself as editor work closely with my editorial and design team. This includes our photographer Jessie – (you may have noticed his name in the photo credits of many of our articles), my lead graphic designer Soné, our sales and communications manager Jorge and a broad team of freelancers. Before one month ends, we’re already planning content, pagination and layout for the next. As stories and photos come in they are copy-edited and then sent to our design team for layout. That fantastic pullout calendar you have on your wall each month? That’s courtesy of our graphic designer, Zahi. And our events listings compiled in our pages and online? That’s done by Susanna, our new media manager. As articles are templated, laid out and designed they go through an extensive review and approval process. Moona Masri-Whitice our Executive Editorial Director and our Chairman Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal go over every page with a magnifying glass to ensure that what we publish is as error-free as possible and the style is in line with our brand standards and values of our readership. (That’s you!) After our final draft has been approved, all advertisements placed and articles signed off on, the entire package goes to our finalizer and production manager, Srimani, who makes sure that everything looks clean and tidy from a technical standpoint before we head off to the printers. So the next time you pick up a copy of QH in the store, you’ll know that every article you read has already had many eyes looking over it and every page you turn has a lot of heart behind it! In Your Face We asked our Facebook followers what this Eid Al Adha means to them. Here’s one particularly great response we received. Eid Mubarak! “Eid Al-Adha, or ‘Festival of Sacrifice’ follows close on the heels of the first Eid festival of the year, Eid Al-Fitr. The Arabic word ‘Adha’ means ‘sacrifice’, having its root in the word ‘duha’, which also means ‘light’ or ‘illumination’. Muslims all over the world celebrate the festival of Eid Al-Adha, in which those who can afford to also sacrifice an animal to gain Allah’s pleasure, embodying the sacrifice made by Prophet Abraham [peace be upon him] when he was ordered by Allah in his dream to sacrifice his son Ismael [peace be upon him], to which he complied. For me, Eid al Adha is always a time to reflect upon the willing sacrifices that we must make - not just the sacrifices that occur due to adversity. We often find ourselves in situations that require personal sacrifice, but rarely do we make a clear intention to give in sacrifice or to practice the art of sacrifice. This is the lesson of the Eid which I have begun to include into my own family traditions, built around practicing sacrifice. And not to forget, it’s also a festival which is a feast of a variety of delicious meat dishes which await the Muslims on Eid AlAdha! No sooner than the meat reaches the kitchen, then the appetizing aroma of mouth-watering delicacies starts wafting from it.” -- Rafia M. Siddiqui

The fourth edition of the much anticipated Doha Tribeca Film Festival is taking over Doha from November 17-24 with screenings and events over eight full days, at three iconic locations – Katara Cultural Village, Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art. QH gives you a sneak peak at some of the festival’s most anticipated films and events
D
oha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) , the annual cultural event of Doha Film Institute, is back for another exhilarating edition. The team behind the festival has scoured the globe to bring festival-goers cutting-edge works from the Arab world and a selection from the best of current international cinema. With question-andanswer sessions with visiting filmmakers, the screenings are sure to enlighten, educate and entertain. The Made in Qatar program has increased significantly this year, reflecting an exciting growth in the local cinema industry. Once again, DTFF’s Arab Film Competition celebrates and acclaims the most exciting voices from the MENA region as the festival welcomes esteemed Tunisian actress Hend Sabry as president of this year’s Arab Competition Jury. Other special guests include Mira Nair, Robert DeNiro, Ashutosh Gowariker, Amr Waked, Haifaa Al Mansour and Nabil Ayouch, plus a wealth of other filmmakers in attendance. In the 50 years since it gained its independence from France, Algeria has produced a powerful body of cinematic work. The tribute to Algerian Cinema, ‘Caught Between Past and Present’ displays the frustrations, resilience and hope of Algeria’s people during the post-colonial era. DTFF also marks 40 years of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Japan with a special program of Japanese films. The long-awaited Jazz at Lincoln Center is now open at the St. Regis Doha. QH was there to bring you the full review, taking in the fiery sounds of jazz legend Wynton Marsalis and his dynamic quintet.
I
t’s late on a Saturday night; well past my bedtime but I’m here at the new Jazz at Lincoln Center for a very good reason. The ambiance in the lounge is dim, smoky, smooth yet upbeat—kind of like jazz music itself. It’s a full house tonight and has been since they opened their doors. We’re all here for one thing: to hear Wynton Marsalis and his band do what they do best. Taking the stage, Marsalis is a force to be reckoned with. Soft-spoken and mild when engaging with the audience, all that changes when he puts his trumpet to his
lips. The passion, soulfulness and heart that shines through in his sound is the essence of quintessential jazz. A nine-time Grammy Award-winner and Pulitzer Prizewinner Marsalis and his bandmates have a way of uniting audiences across cultures, class and borders through their music.

fter the success of the rather modest Doha Comedy Festival 2011, which included comedy shows at The Pearl-Qatar, Katara and Education City, together with a Comedy Workshop and participation in the Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2011, SUCQ is happy to announce this year’s schedule of laughs with the Doha Comedy Festival 2012.

Halal Bilal, SUCQ’s founder and the referee for the Comedy Showdown, said that the event aims to bring together all the different communities that call Qatar home, both nationals and expatriates: “Come and enjoy some multicultural humour, and lets laugh at ourselves and each other - and do it all together!”
SUCQ is a coalition of stand up comedians living in Qatar. SUCQ promotes stand up comedy in the region by supporting and developing up-and-coming comedians and hosting regular events and tours. SUCQ comedians have been featured extensively in local and regional media, and were recently made their international media debut in a feature in the New York Times.
The show is happening on November 8, 2012 at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ), with Ousama Itani and Issa El-Fahoum as “Team Expat” facing off against Mohammed Fahad Kamal and Hamad Al-Amari for “Team Qatar”. Tickets are available from Bread and Bagels and at all MINI showrooms for QR50, while stocks last.

Impressions of the Ottoman Empire
Q
atar’s Orientalist Museum has of one of the most significant collections of Orientalist art – Western works depicting Middle East and East Asian cultures – ever assembled in the world. Unfortunately, it’s not currently open to the public, but this month part of its collection will be on display at the ALRIWAQ exhibition space, next to the Museum of Islamic Art. The show, ‘The Art of Travel: Bartholomäus Schachman (1559-1614)’ introduces visitors to the story of a journey the mayor of Danzig in Poland (now known as Gdansk) made around the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. At the height of its power, the Ottoman Empire was one of the most powerful states in the world. It spanned as far north as Poland and as far south as Eritrea and from Algeria to Azerbaijan west to east. Much of western Saudi Arabia was under Ottoman control, as well as Iraq and Kuwait.
preparation. “After years of restoration, conservation, research and study, the Orientalist Museum presents an exhibition focusing on a single document – Schachman’s travel album. The concept of the exhibition is vital for developing and sustaining a dialogue between different religions, nations, cultures and traditions.” The show completes its own journey in Doha, having been on display in Poland earlier this summer. The exhibition’s opening ceremony was held in Gdansk in July. It was attended by various members of Poland’s art community and a number of Polish officials, including Poland’s president, Bronisław Komorowski, wrote to the organizers praising them for helping to emphasize the growing ties between Poland and Qatar. An educational program will accompany the exhibition here in Doha, including an
international conference and lecture series. The organizers hope that these events will encourage visitors to follow the example of Bartholomäus Schachman to record their memories and in turn improve cultural exchange and understanding in these troubled times. The Qatar Museums Authority’s unique Orientalist collection contains around 700 paintings, water colours, drawings and prints, tracing Orientalism back to the 16th century. It was put together by artloving Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani over a period of 15 years and donated to the QMA in 2005. Bartholomäus Schachman commissioned an album to document his travels. Dated 1590, it contains full-page watercolour drawings that depict the costumes and people, together with scenes of everyday life, festivals and ceremonies that he saw on his journey. Mary Stuart, a political prisoner, is accused of religious extremism, incitement of war and masterminding assassination. That would be impossible; her only peer is Queen Elizabeth I. Eric Pernes has worked with Katara’s Curator developing this exhibition which discusses the theme of Orientalism and more precisely ‘Neo-Orientalism’ as interpreted by the artist. Some of the highlighted pieces presented reference the well-known American sitcom first aired in 1965, ‘I Dream of Jeannie’. The show featured Barbara Eden as a 2,000-year-old genie and Larry Hagman as an astronaut who becomes her master. The artist uses this popular media culture series to explore Arab and Middle Eastern identity representations in the West and in the Middle East in contemporary culture, and perceptions of Arabs and of the Middle East, by the West. The artists will be in residency at KAS for four weeks and several dedicated workshops with Qatar-based artists and the general public will be offered. Constantin Boym Exhibition: Learning From Mabkhara Gallery 2, Building 13 Nov 8-Dec 1 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. Following the success of last year’s ‘Shared Glass’ Exhibition, Katara proudly presents ‘Constantin Boym: Learning from Mabkhara’. Featuring unique and exquisite shapes and designs, ‘Mabkhara’ is a traditional Arab incense burner, an authentic object typically used for daily domestic activities in the Arab world. Incense burners serve as representations of sensorial culture in the East, much celebrated in the world of literature and art of the last two centuries. The exhibition will present the new objects alongside their traditional prototypes from the region, to illustrate the process of learning and to better highlight the dialectic between continuity and innovation.

For the Katara Galleries exhibition the curator has selected works where the artist features her interpretation of Middle Eastern, Arab and North African traditional dress and accessories. As in all of Kimiko’s photographic work, she herself features in all the works as an absent character, presenting her vision of the culture or cultural aspect she chooses to share with the audience. Her work is of breathtaking lightness and the visitor can’t help but get absorbed by them and identify convergence and dialogue possibilities with the artwork. Through Kimiko’s photography the visitor will access elementary pieces of different cultural interpretations, as she offers us the essential, the minimal, but also the ultimately necessary hints and elements for understanding the ‘other’, his culture and ultimately ourselves in relation to him.

iabetes is a disease that robs those who have it of their quality of life; but it’s also one that’s preventable. According to statistics from the Northwestern School of Journalism’s Qatar Sweet Epidemic website, (www.qatarsweetepidemic.org), figures from the National Health Strategy 2011-2016 indicate that 71 percent of residents in Qatar are overweight, while another 32 percent are obese or morbidly obese. The majority of diabetes cases in the country are of the Type 2 variety, also known as ‘adult-onset’ diabetes and are directly attributed to an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. With 16.7 percent of the adult population classified as diabetic, the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) is looking to help change that figure through a campaign of awareness and health promotion. “Our role is to educate and inform people and help them manage it,” says Dr. Abdulla Al-Hamaq, Executive

Diabetes continues to affect the lives of thousands of people here in Qatar. With World Diabetes Day coming up on November 14, QH has information on activities and events here in Doha aimed at raising awareness with the Qatar Diabetes Association.

Al Bawasil and Al Tahadi Camps Held annually each fall, these camps are geared at children and youth living and coping with juvenile diabetes. More than 100 youth from Qatar and the MENA region come to Doha to learn about managing the disease and how to live a healthy life-style. The Al Bawasil Camp hosts children under the age of 12 and the Al Tahadi Camp is for youth ages 13-17. They have the chance to meet with nurses, doctors and other healthcare practitioners while interacting with other diabetic children and teens. Sponsored by the Qatar Youth Hostel Association, which hosts the camps every year, the program is meant to educate, involve and engage in a way that’s informative, fun and energetic. his month will see the most prestigious climate change conference on the planet hosted right here in Qatar. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties Nº18 (CoP 18) is expected to draw some 20 thousand delegates to our shores from all over the world. The event, to be held at the conference halls of Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC), starts from November 26. To support the CoP movement the Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) is encouraging the rapidly expanding hospitality sector to adopt best environmental practices by launching its Green Hotel Interest Group (GHIG). The GHIG launch, which took place last month at the Wyndham Grand Regency Hotel, saw leading hotels, organizations and individuals come together to create a forum to support and advance greater sustainable practices within Qatar’s hospitality sector. Eng. Meshal AlShamari, Director of Qatar Green Building Council, welcomed participants and introduced the event, saying, “The establishment and launch of the Green Hotel Interest Group is timely amidst the flurry of activity following last year’s announcement that Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA® World Cup and the forthcoming CoP 18. All eyes are really on Qatar right now.” He also highlighted the importance of sustainable development as a main pillar of the Qatar Vision 2030. As part of the organization’s ongoing program to share and encourage good sustainability practices in the environment, GHIG will join forces with hospitality partners across Qatar and work towards off-setting the CO2 emissions generated by the hospitality sector. Alongside the already large number of housing developments currently underway in the country, 800 additional buildings, including hotels, are planned within Doha’s city center alone and this figure is expected to rise over the next few years when development in the rest of Doha is also taken into account. Hotels are not exempt from this and there is now an expectation from our guests to see changes taking place within the hospitality sector. Green changes that hotels can easily implement range from serving water in jugs to avoid using plastic bottles, to renting iPads for meetings to reduce the use of paper.

John Bryant, a professor at Texas A&M University, discussed the topic of ‘Continuous Commissioning’ which focuses on the ongoing evaluation of a building’s energy consumption. Bryant led his discussion with a thought-provoking question to the audience, asking, “There are about 13,500,000 hotel rooms in the world and within the MENA region alone, there has been an annual growth of 2.4% in the past decade. We need to ask ourselves, are these rooms doing the best they can?”

A Qatari’s Eid By Khalifa Saleh Haroon
in our minds, With the Eid Al Adha holidays still fresh the meaning of I Love Qatar takes a moment to explain within the the two Eids and how they’re celebrated local community.
Q
uite a few people ask me “Didn’t we already have an Eid?” and it dawned on me that this might be a good time to explain the two Eids that we have each year. ‘Eid’ means ‘celebration’ and the first one happens right after Ramadan. It’s called Eid Al Fitr which is translated as the ‘Celebration of Breaking Fast’. It’s a national holiday, shops will usually decorate for Eid and family and friends gather together. Everyone dresses up in their best clothes and the kids go out singing songs and getting Eidiya (candy or money).
A Second Eid The second Eid is Eid Al Adha. Translated, it means the ‘Celebration of Sacrifice’. It’s also known as the ‘Big Eid’. The reason why this is such an important Eid is because this is the one that began the construction of Kaaba, the Black Square in Mecca. This is celebrated in the same way as Eid Al Fitr. In Qatar, a typical greeting is ‘Eidkum Mubarak, wa asakum min awadah’. I’d love to hear more people say it!
I thought that some of you might find it interesting to know what goes on at Eid with my family to get an inside glimpse from a Qatari perspective. We all wake up early to enjoy a hearty, traditional family breakfast of eggs, olives, honey, cream cheese, bread and tea, then it’s off for a quick shower and everyone puts on their brand new clothes that were specifically bought for the occasion. Eid is about celebration and about looking your best for your family as well.
out to ‘Ayid’ at the neighbours’ by singing songs and getting a few riyals in return. It’s our form of ‘caroling’. When the children get back, they sit around and count their newfound fortunes and plan what they’re going to buy.
A Festive Feast Soon enough, it’s time for the feast. We all sit around the floor and dig into a selected slaughter. It sounds kind of cruel to some, but it’s an animal that is killed the Halal way (the most humane method possible where the animal feels no pain). We also enjoy traditional rice, drinks, lamb or sheep and chit chat. After washing our hands, we head back to the sitting rooms where we have a nice cup of tea (mint, red, or saffron) and relax.

Then it’s off to prayer before heading to Baba Oad’s (grandfather’s) house. All of the 50-60 cousins, six aunts and six uncles (as well as a huge amount of distant relatives) arrive. The women go off to the sitting room, the men go off to their sitting room and the children run around the house. The general banter is usually along the lines of, “When are you getting married?”, “Why haven’t you been visiting more often?”, “Are you working hard?” and “What have you been doing these days?”
Children will come around and ask for Eidiya. This could be anything from QR 1 to QR 10 (more if you really like them!), then going
The adults then slowly return to their homes or go off to make their rounds to other close friends and relatives and wish them a prosperous future. “Kil sina wa inta tayeb” or “Kil am wa int ibkhair”, meaning “Every year and you are fine” is repeated from individual to individual. Eid is like an Arabian ‘Christmas’ – or at least as important to us as Christmas and I hope you enjoyed a peek into the way my family celebrates here in Qatar!

ur first impressions stepping into The Noodle House at their location on The Pearl are positive. The space is bright, airy and open-concept, overlooking The Pearl’s marina with a seating plan that’s both informal and familial. The bench-style tables encourage a feeling of sharing and that’s exactly what we decide to do, ordering up a selection of appetizers and mains to split between us.

With a revamped menu our server suggests some of the new items to tempt us and before we know it we’ve ticked off what seems like a dozen different boxes on their menu sheet. It’s a nice concept – you can tick off what you want and how many servings of each, with each menu item accompanied by a small icon indicating the level of spiciness or if it’s a vegetarian option. The service is prompt, fast and friendly and our appetizers are ready within ten minutes. We try the new sticky chili beef ribs, vegetable spring rolls, duck wontons, duck gyoza dumplings and chicken satay skewers with a delicious peanut sauce. Everything is fresh, hot and delicious. Hands down our favourite is the duck wontons, crispy on the outside with the mildest hint of curry, the meat is moist, tender and sumptuous with the sweet soy dipping sauce that goes with it. The spring
rolls are also a nice surprise, filled with crunchy vegetables and small thin noodles they’re the perfect balance of crispness and chewiness and are incredibly filling. I can’t get enough of the chili dipping sauce either and even dip my gyozas in it as well.

What We Sampled For our mains we order the teriyaki beef tenderloin, the nasi goreng with chicken satay and fried egg and the sweet and sour chicken with vegetables. Like our appetizers, the mains arrive within ten minutes and the portions are heaping. The nasi goreng is an Indonesian-style rice dish mixed with egg, chicken and shrimps, and when mixed with the yolk from the fried egg on top, plus the decadent peanut sauce from the chicken satay, each mouthful leaves us wanting more. The teriyaki beef tenderloin is another winner – not too sweet, not too salty, it’s the perfect balance with the meat nicely cooked to the proper consistency. The sweet and sour chicken is crispy and sweet with a colourful mix of onions and peppers sautéed and tossed together with the dish. It’s more food than three people can reasonably handle but we feel as though we’ve had a good sampling of the new menu offerings and we leave with a bag full of leftovers, which our office colleagues are very grateful for. Whether it’s to eat-in or to take-away we’ll be back to The Noodle House sooner rather than later!

It’s our way of giving the community a voice in our pages. This month Rachel Pullen sampled the Friday brunch at Coral in the InterContinental Doha. Here is her review.
QH: What did you order? RP: My friends and I tasted the buffet selections listed below:

QH: Describe the quality of the food.
QH: Were the prices reasonable?
QH: Would you go back? Why/why not?
RP: Given the variety of options, yes prices were reasonable.
RP: I would probably not return to Coral for brunch. Currently, the brunch lacks energy and when my friends and I treat ourselves to a Friday brunch we are more inclined to choose a lively venue that attracts a younger, single, expat clientele.
• QR 250 regular brunch • QR 275 bubbly brunch QH: Describe the ambiance. RP: The restaurant lacked ambiance and the typical Friday brunch energy. It felt as though the restaurant only wanted to cater to in-house guests. It currently is not a venue where my friends and I would want to stay for the afternoon or celebrate a special occasion. The brunch did not offer any form of live entertainment. Piped-in music was playing softly upon arrival, but by
RP: The brunch offered a nice variety of items, but the quality of the food was average. QH: Describe the quality of the service. RP: We arrived at 12:00 p.m. as instructed, but the restaurant sent us away until 12:30 p.m. Table service was above average for Doha, i.e. very attentive staff. They cleared plates and refilled beverages without having to be asked.
QH: Favourite thing about the restaurant RP: The wait staff was extremely attentive. Tables were cleared quickly and beverages were replenished without delay. QH: Could the overall experience be improved? If so, how? RP: Yes.
• The hotel should immediately consider some form of entertainment. At a minimum, the in-house music should be on and audible at all times. • The kitchen appears to be having difficulty with the temperature of food items. While we were one of the first tables seated, everything we tasted was either cold or lukewarm. None of the items offered were actually served hot. • We found that the majority of meat selections were served overcooked and quite dry. • No breakfast items are currently offered. It would be nice if an egg station was offered. • We found it a bit odd that the brunch packages do not include water or soft beverages. We were never advised that soft drinks and water were not included in the package until we were presented the check. ife must be really tough for a fruit. Consider all that pressure to be commercially en vogue…a healthy snack…the season’s super-food. Remember when the blueberry reigned as the antioxidant king? It certainly didn’t see the pomegranate popping up from oblivion and usurping its glory. Of course, that craze lasted for just a few dieting cycles before the phonetically endearing açaí berry came along to hog the limelight. The fruits themselves are intrinsically nutritious and always have been. What changes, sadly, is their star appeal. Once the advertising dries up, sales figures follow suit. But if there’s one fruit that returns year after year as the autumnal must-have and hibernal must-use, it’s the triumphant cranberry.
Fiesty Cranberry Cake Ingredients: 225gm butter Getting zesty 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 can cranberry sauce 1 170gm tub plain yogurt ¼ cup orange juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 2 cups flour ½ teaspoon salt Implements: 1 mixing bowl 1 cake tin/spring-form pan lined with grease-proof paper 1 spatula/wooden ladle

The cranberry’s extreme tartness is a pick-me-up like no other. That penetrating flavour coupled with its glossy crimson skin makes it a champion every time. The cranberry just can’t help but be the show-stopper on a platter. Could you imagine a roast turkey without a bowl of cranberry relish on its side? Blasphemy. Cranberries are typically found in three forms, all of which can easily find their way into dinner. The fresh ones appear in stores just in time for the holiday table. Blitz them with an orange and some sugar, and you have a three-minute, three-ingredient relish. The dried, sweetened variety goes great when baked with breads and biscotti, adding a nice chew to every bite. And lastly, canned cranberries—both jellied and whole fruit—can be suitably incorporated into muffins, cakes and sauces for meats.

The cake has an incredible moistness owing to the full-bodied sauce and yogurt. In terms of flavour, you’ll be amazed by how the simple addition of orange helps heighten the taste of the berries. The cake is exquisite served warm on its own with perhaps a side of cream. But it’s also sturdy enough to be filled and coated with frosting. I could not give any

This month, I’m sharing a recipe I concocted shortly after Thanksgiving one year when I was invited to an impromptu dinner party. I knew I had a can of cranberry sauce that could be combined with a few baking staples into a coffee cake of sorts. Topped with a dollop of orange-infused whipped cream, this turned out to be a lovely little accidental recipe.
pinch, I once even employed them as lettering on a cake after I ran out of icing. Here’s the long and short of it: this is no fad. The foxy fruits…they come and go. The cranberry, my friend, is here to stay.
Instructions: Remove butter from the fridge 15 minutes before starting. In a mixing bowl, whip softened butter and sugar together with a spatula or wooden ladle until light and fluffy. An electric mixer will cream this in two minutes, but it’ll take up to three times that by hand. Add one egg at a time, mixing until fully incorporated. Mix in vanilla extract, yogurt, cranberry sauce and orange juice. Sift in the flour, salt, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda into the bowl. Combine together until you have a fairly thick, fragrant batter. Pour the batter into the lined cake tin and level with a spoon. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celcius for 45-55 minutes, or until a skewer pricked into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream or additional cranberry sauce.

With the 2022 World Cup looming on the horizon, we examine how Qatar has stakes in an ever-growing football empire.
Q
atar’s wealth and desire to build international bridges have been the motivating factors behind a good deal of its overseas investment activity, especially within Europe. That two of the most high-profile examples include the acquisition of football clubs is significant, especially with the Qatar 2022 World Cup less than a decade away now. While the choice of purchases made thus far doesn’t indicate a lack of ambition by any means, they perhaps want for a greater level of exposure than the clubs acquired can actually provide. If, of course, we assume that exposure of the Qatar ‘brand’ is the aim, given that only about a dozen football clubs on earth actually make any money. In 2010, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani bought the Spanish club Malaga. Malaga’s history isn’t particularly storied and
it’s never been considered one of Spain’s bigger clubs, but they do play in Spain’s top division and this season – for the first time ever – they’re representing Spain in the Champions League, Europe’s premier club football competition. This purchase and investment in Malaga has enabled Europe-wide publicity for the club and – by proxy – Qatar, but Malaga are not a Barcelona or a Real Madrid and never will be. It could even be argued that Qatar Foundation’s position as shirt sponsors of Barcelona delivers more ‘bang for its buck’. Then there is the curious case of Paris Saint Germain (PSG), purchased in 2011 by the Qatar Investment Authority. PSG is perhaps the most famous of all French clubs, with a sparkling domestic record but little in the way of European pedigree, and captive to a domestic league that is little-watched outside its own borders. While the Spanish league is popular and technically brilliant, the PSG acquisition is slightly confusing when its league is not at
all ‘Hollywood’ but sited across the English Channel from one that is: the richest and most widely-watched league in the world – The English Premier League (EPL). Would not an EPL club offer a more prudent investment? The number of clubs within this league under foreign ownership outnumber those under domestic control and while it has gone very wrong for some buyers. Indian poultry firm Venky’s purchase of 1995 EPL Champions Blackburn Rovers ended in relegation and in-fighting last season – it has also gone spectacularly right in the guise of current Champions Manchester City who were bought in 2008 by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour. The playing squad was overhauled at massive expense and the club has posted massive losses ever since, but the worldwide renown Abu Dhabi and its flagcarrying airline Etihad (both as the name of the stadium and as shirt sponsors) have had as a result has proved a price worth paying. How much, one wonders, would similar exposure cost through traditional advertising channels?

Before Mansour’s arrival in Manchester, City were a big club with a glorious past and a pretty woeful modern-day record. There is another EPL club that displays very similar characteristics: Newcastle United. Newcastle play to the thirdlargest crowds in England (averaging 50,000 per home game) despite not having won anything for over 40 years. Their supporters are hugely passionate and the club has taken massive steps to get its house in order – and its playing squad in far better shape than it has been for some
But Ashley has made it clear that the club must ‘pay its own way’ – which it does – and has made repeated attempts to sell the club in recent years. So what Newcastle fans are left with is a very well-run club with a superb (albeit not top, top notch) playing squad, but a billionaire owner who doesn’t want to make that ‘final push’ in terms of player investment that we have seen reap rewards at ‘sleeping giants’ like Manchester City and Chelsea.
England’s ‘top tier’ clubs – Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are currently off the market. Newcastle is by far the biggest club in England that actually represents a realistic purchase for someone or some organization with deep pockets and there are more than a few of these in Qatar at present. Investment in the likes of Malaga and PSG will bring their own rewards, but they won’t come close to the kudos that could be achieved by taking a Premier League club of Newcastle United’s size to the next level and deliver better value for money. 93

The 2012 Tennis Open is back for another edition. The most celebrated local players will battle it out at Khalifa International Tennis Complex and at the InterContinental Doha tennis courts for the coveted title and prize money. his November the Qatar Tennis Federation and the InterContinental Doha bring the Tennis Open 2012 to their courts. The event gathers some of the top tennis players in the country. The annual tournament will take place in and around the Khalifa International Tennis Complex and the InterContinental Doha starting on Monday, November 5 and running until Monday, November 19. All tennis players in Doha are invited to participate in the Tennis Open. They will compete in 19 categories for men and women and boys and girls. There will be 19 finals played during the duration of the Tennis Open 2012, usually only one final is held on the last day, November 19 (most likely the men’s singles or doubles final). The draws and order will be announced after October 25.

What better way to experience the lush splendour of Scotland than on foot? We explore each nook and cranny along the winding paths of the rugged West Highland Way.
A
s I limp into the tiny Scottish town of Drymen after seven hours of hiking, I begin to question my decision to walk the West Highland Way (WHW). Stretching north from Milngavie near Glasgow, to Fort William, the WHW crosses 154 km of Scotland’s famed Highlands. My plan is to hike its length over eight days. But after one day and just 20 km, with a swollen knee and every muscle aching, I’m not sure I’ll make it. “It’s all in your head” says Stuart, a Glaswegian with a lilting accent and a love of ‘the craic’. “It doesn’t matter how fit you are; whether or not you can finish the walk is all in your head.”
He should know: at age 60, this is his ninth time roaming the Way and he’s seen walkers of all shapes, sizes and ages either make it or get broken by it. This year he and friend Ewart, himself a four-time veteran, have ditched all creature comforts and are camping each night in fields along the route. Not quite as adventurous, I’ve opted to stay in bed and breakfasts, inns and cozy ‘wigwam’ huts, ranging in price from £30 to £80 or between QR 176 and QR 470. After a good night’s sleep in a soft tartanlined bed I decide to take Stuart’s advice and give myself a pep-talk.
As I gingerly cover an ever-growing blister, I wonder how I’ll muster the energy to get myself through the second day. My answer comes in the form of a full Scottish breakfast, included with my accommodation. And so, with a belly full of porridge, I stiffly slog on to Rowardennan. Luckily the scenery is enough to take my mind off the pain. The WHW leads walkers along the pebbled shores of Loch Lomond, through the windy rolls of Rannoch Moor, past cloud-covered hills, up the Devil’s Staircase and down deep narrow glens. At times it’s soggy, others it’s rocky but it’s always bonny, as the Scots like to say. The landscape is vast and luscious in a way that only a rain-soaked country can boast.

QH SENSATIONS On day two I tackle Conic Hill which looms above Loch Lomond, Britain’s largest stretch of inland water. Deep green with splashes of purple heather, it looks like something from a movie. In fact, many scenes from ‘Braveheart’ and ‘Rob Roy’ were filmed near the WHW.
Roads also give access to public transport. Many walkers find they’re not up to the trudge and can opt to take a bus for part of the distance. I must admit this was tempting around the 50 km mark.

In addition to around 30,000 people who hike the entire distance each year, the Conic Hill summit is a popular trek for tourists who just want a one-hour glimpse of the WHW. Other day-tripper favourites are the Falls of Inversaid and the ruins of Lairigmor. Much of the walk is accessible by road which, while disappointing for long-haul hikers, means travellers who are short on time or low on energy can drive the route, spending a few hours or days at the towns along the Way.
Those who are up to it can find some respite for their backs, if not their feet. Most use a baggage delivery service – for £40 or QR 235, Travel Lite will deliver your luggage to your accommodation each night. That way, your clothes stay dry and your day-pack light. All you need to carry each day is water, warm clothes, (Scotland is famous for experiencing four seasons in one day) and money for lunch.

Although I got a few bites, I didn’t end up getting the bus – I proudly made it to the end on foot. The West Highland Way was challenging yet so rewarding and completely worth the blisters, even if it took a couple of days for my head to realize it.

For a country that’s mostly desert Qatar is surprisingly rich in biodiversity. With nearly 600 km of coastline, its broad shores are a prime habitat for marine turtles. The main turtle nesting sites are in Al Khor, Fuwairat Beach in the north and Ras Laffan. The April to August season is when most turtles come ashore to lay their eggs and naturalists and intrepid beach-goers with a keen eye can spot the animals along the sand.
