Words by Antony D. Antoniou Images courtesy of Voigas Band

It’s time to get your lederhosen and dirndl dresses ready as Oktoberfest 2016 hits Doha once again. The InterContinental Doha will be hosting the famous German festival from Ocotber 5-14. QH spoke with Voigas Band, the Austrian Folk band who will be entertaining revelers throughout the event. QH: So how long has your band been together? VB: Well, we have performed together now for more than 10 years. I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone by but it’s been a blast!

QH: Tell us a little about Austrian folkloric music, how would you describe it to someone who has never heard it before. VB: Austrian folk music consists of Polka, Waltz, Landler, Boarischer and March-music. Just watch some videos on YouTube to get an idea. It’s very upbeat, fun and gets you moving. QH: Is it different to German folkloric music? VB: We are based in the northeastern part of Austria close to the southern German province of Bavaria. Culture, music, traditional costumes and also the mentality of the people in the whole region is very similar. QH: Is it your first time in Qatar? VB: No, we have already entertained the people of Qatar at the Intercontinental Doha starting back in 2009 until 2012.Now we are back again and can’t wait to share our music and culture. QH: Tell us about the venue, how do you find it?

QH: What does Oktoberfest mean to you? VB: Oktoberfest is a traditional Bavarian event and it is more than just beverages and pretzels. The first Oktoberfest took place in 1810 in Munich and has developed into the biggest outdoor festival worldwide. Oktoberfest sees many nations and different people all enjoying each other’s company. More than six million people celebrate this festival peacefully together. This creates the unique Oktoberfest atmosphere which connects people and makes them return every year. We will bring as much as possible of this spirit to the Oktoberfest which will be taking place in Doha, Qatar.

QH: Are there any special dances that are performed in Austrian folkloric music that our readers should know about? VB: We will perform several dances in the Intercontinental Doha Oktoberfest and teach the audience how to dance them. If you wish to practice before the event, then you can watch the videos on our website www.octoberfestband.at QH: Which country did you perform at and enjoyed the most recently? VB: Within the past few years we have performed in numerous festivals in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Overseasgigs are always exciting for us and we are looking forward to the Intercontinental Doha Oktoberfest 2016. n OKTOBERFEST 2016 Date: October 5, 6, 7 and 13, 14

VB: Doha is developing fast and it is on the way to becoming an international metropolis. We are looking forward to bringing a bit of “home” to the German and Austrian expats and to excite all others with our culture and traditions. Celebrating an Oktoberfest under palm trees on the beach is fantastic, especially as we are mostly used to the mountains and winter snow.

Location: InterContinental Doha

QH: What does the name of your band mean in English?

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

ton Diane Kruger stars along side Crans e as his undercover wife in the featur length film - The Infiltrator

Words by Piers Manning Interview and selected images courtesy of Viva Press

For those who can remember Hal from the TV comedy Malcolm In The Middle, there is much love out there for actor Bryan Lee Cranston. Not to mention starring in the monumental hit show, Breaking Bad, the man from the Golden State can’t seem to put a foot wrong these days. QH got his thoughts on the industry and his new movie, The Infiltrator.

Television holds little appeal to Bryan Lee Cranston. He’s done his time. “I find it’s important to explore opportunities that may come my way and I can’t necessarily do that being attached to a long-running show. Largely because if it’s successful, my face becomes too ubiquitous. Which isn’t always ideal.” His road to success has been a long one. Twenty years in the industry appearing on every hit series from Baywatch to Seinfeld to Sabrina The Teenage Witch eventually led to his breakout role as anxious dad Hal in Malcolm in The Middle. This then fed into interesting supporting roles in Drive, Larry Crowne and Contagion. It was then followed up by his career-defining performance in Breaking Bad. At 60 years-old, the actor is enjoying the spoils of mass fame. An Oscar nomination this year for Trumbo and eight feature films in production

including the Power Rangers big screen outing, life is going rather swimmingly for the artist formerly known as Walt White. In his latest release, The Infiltrator, he portrays the astonishing double life of US customs special agent, Bob Mazur, who during the eighties used his undercover alias "Bob Musella" to become a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash in the Medellin cartel. After two and a half years, Bob had enough evidence to make 85 arrests and take down one of the largest banks in America. Its little wonder Cranston sees Mazur as a real-life superhero. Cheery, enthusiastic and always so appreciative of his success, the star looks back on his journey and why he’ll never take his status for granted. He lives in Ventura Beach with wife of 27 years, Robin Deardon. They have one daughter, Taylor, 23.

17 QH Oct 2016 - FINAL.indd 17

9/26/16 16:48

ENTERTAINMENT QH: You played Walter White; the accidental narcotics kingpin, and now you’re playing Bob Mazur, infiltrator of the Medellin cartel. You’re going full circle. BLC: [laughs]. Kingpin, I’m not sure how much of a kingpin he was, but I like that [laughs]. They’re very much on the opposite side of the coin. It’s a really amazing story. Bob’s a superhero. A real life superhero, who literally was living two very distinct lives – infiltrating the Medellin cartel, putting away 85 members in jail and subsequently bringing down the seventh largest bank in the United States. And then there was his family life, he tucked the kids in bed and went to swim meets and carpooled. What baffles me is how on earth he juggled these two weighted, opposed sides to his life. How could he deal with the mundane home life when there was all this risk and danger in his professional life, that constant vibrating fear. It’s extraordinary, an incredible accomplishment. How did he balance his life between being Bob Mazur and Bob Musella? And it wasn’t just about his actions, it was his emotions, and the attachments made. He created and built friendships over two and a half years, there was trust, great trust. And then he had to shatter that into smithereens, put them in jail. It’s a betrayal, a betrayal that you can justify, but does your heart understand that, your emotional core, that has to be a crushing blow to the system. QH: How he reconciled with those conflicts is amazing. He was an actor effectively during the sting; did that give you an instant bond? BLC: There’s a similarity yes. You’re right, in a sense, it is acting. What he did for a living is what I do for a living. Just, minus the mortal pressure he’s under [laughs]. On a set, if I make a mistake, we can redo it. But he could lose his life. So there’s a gap there, a chasm somewhat [laughs]. I can have a bad day, and go home and complain about it to my wife. He can’t have a bad day. And he can’t talk about it when he goes home; he has to keep it all inside. Because he couldn’t allow his family to experience that fear, that fear that if he slips up, if cracks begin to appear in his veneer, his façade, not only will they kill him, they would kill everyone who he loved and held dear. And to live with that for two and a half years, just fascinating how he did it. QH: Bob has been protecting himself and his family’s identity since the trials, how has that affected him as a person and what was it like to work with him on this? BLC: He’s extremely careful and cautious. He won’t be on camera, he won’t be photographed. When he speaks on radio, they augment his voice. He put 85 people in prison, and some of them are out now and they didn’t appreciate that he turned out to be not who he said he was. To them, he’s responsible for putting them behind bars, so he has to be very careful. But not to the point where it’s effected his sense of humour or his humanity.

QH: What I don’t understand is why he’s putting himself and his family at risk by writing the book and being involved in this movie?

QH: Do you feel you’re better equipped for fame now, after finding it in your fifties?

BLC: You’ve got to understand, this man was responsible for one of the biggest narcotics swoops in the history of the US State Department. He brought down the seventh largest bank in the world. 85 arrests, which went on to over a hundred, and nearly the same number of convictions.

BLC: Hopefully I’ve learned that this is a gift. And it’s not forever. I know that and you know what, when my time is done, I want to hand over the mantle to someone, I want to take a rest and do something else. You have to embrace the passages of your life, as opposed to resisting them. They’re going to happen; you might as well welcome them. And I do.

And he’s not allowed to say a word? Not to his wife, not to his children, not to anybody. He had to purge his emotions. He had to keep secrets for so long, all bottled up, the book and now this film, was a safe way to release all that information that he had stored inside him. It also gave him closure. He’s enjoying a new chapter in his life now and had he not experienced this catharsis, it could have had an adverse effect.

We have hopes and loose plans of what we’d like to do in our lives, but they are just that. What if you get an incurable disease, friends of ours, of all ages, we all know them, who have been struck with great misfortune, why am I starring in this? I have no idea. I know so many tremendous talented actors, tremendously talented who aren’t getting the opportunities and recognition they deserve.

Bryan Cranston, Dame Helen Mirren ning and John Goodman attend a scree n Film of Trumbo during the BFI Londo e Squar ster Festival at Odeon Leice

All anyone can know now starting out in this industry, I tell them there’s talent, there’s patience and there’s persistence, those things need to be part of your life. And there’s one other thing you’re going to need to be successful in the arts, and it’s luck. Without it, you are not going to have a successful career.

of people follow that path by doing something that they find they have an aptitude for. But it’s more courageous to go against that, and say, I want to find something I love to do. It’s riskier.

QH: I read that you once planned on becoming a cop?

BLC: This was one I thought, I don’t know about this, really….Power Rangers. With the floating heads and the voices, really? But I watched some footage they’d already done and talked to the director and we spoke about it and how different it was from the original series, which I was sceptical about, but it really is. It’s so far removed. There’s a feeling of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy about it, which was light years from the original Batman TV series, god bless it. The script is great, so why not? n

BLC: I probably would have become a cop because that was the track I was on when I was 16; I discovered I had an aptitude for that because of a Boy Scout group that was connected with the police department. And I thought I was very pragmatic at 16 years-old, if I’m good at something, this is what I should do. But I didn’t love it, it wasn’t in my heart, it was in my head. I would say the great majority

QH: Speaking of risky, what can you tell me about Power Rangers?

Having lived and worked in Ibiza for many years, Carlo is keen to bring more youthful and current live artists to Doha. He tells us to check out the Roof Top soon which he says will also be a big hit this year!

The Food First to arrive is the crispy risotto with crab, very tasty and just the right amount of finger food to share with a friend. Next is the Vitello tonnato, a dish of cold, sliced veal covered with a creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce that has been flavoured with tuna. A Caesar salad comes with the main course of fish kebab skewers with bell peppers, onion, saffron, cream, carrots and courgette spaghetti. All delicious and well presented.

Live Music

Party Happenings Words by Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca

The St. Regis Doha looks to reignite its late night offerings with The Club, its newly rebranded live music venue. QH spruced up and headed for a night out to remember!

I

t’s a Thursday night, and it’s been a long week! We head up to the fourth floor of The St. Regis Doha to enjoy, what we hope, will be a fun night.

Arriving a tad too early to the rebranded lounge, which now simply goes by the name of The Cub, gives us time to peruse the menu in peace and take in the atmosphere of the place. What a welcome surprise it is, I’m immediately reminded of a 1960’s New York Jazz Club kind of vibe

The main draw of The Club is, of course, the live music. The night I was there, I listened to three acts, all different but all extremely talented. First, was the sublime Judi Jackson with her slow and sensual style, followed by a chap playing acoustic guitar hits, both new and old. Lastly, a lady from the U.S. with a powerful voice belting out old school R&B and Soul. Truly entertaining and enjoyable!

with an elevated bar at the back and tables set out in semi-circular fashion, surrounding the main stage, this place is beautiful.

The tempo of the music throughout the night was just right and by the end, the venue was pretty full with people, having a good time.

With ample time on our hands, we learn more about the new direction that Manager Carlo Scavone wants to take this beautiful late night spot toward. He explains that the menu has had a revamp and is now largely Italian in taste and that the music too, will be much more varied and contemporary from now on.

The Club is bringing some genuinely globally renowned artists, who, from what I’ve seen, can put on some lively performances, creating a buzzing, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Be sure to keep an eye on this one. n

The staff are very friendly and the place feels very cool, I can’t help thinking that this is the kind of club that could be easily used as a set in a movie or something! Although no longer a Jazz club as such, the venue still pays homage to its jazz heritage. Carlo explains that patrons will see a steady progression throughout the night, a bit of jazz to start off before changing the tempo with live acts and eventually some dance music to end the night.

THE CLUB Location: The St. Regis Doha (fourth floor) Timings: • Tuesday, Wednesday Saturday from 7:00 p.m. till 1:00 a.m. • Thursday, Friday from 7:00 p.m. till 2:00 a.m. • Music starts at 8:00 p.m. Dress Code: Smart – Elegant For more information or reservations please call 4446-0105 or email doha.butler@stregis.com.

VCU QATAR Neo-Mosaics Workshop

MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART Treasures Of China

Oct 9 - Nov 7: This workshop is focused on exploring new ways of creating images through guide exercises and studio type sessions. By ways of nonconventional materials, we will imitate a rather old technique in a contemporary manner. We will exercise different approaches to explore how to work with this new technique. The mosaic technique is characterized by revealing very clearly the process that leads to a final image. Neo-Mosaics are something new and they have a myriad of applications. Participants will discover a unique route to develop their creativity enjoying each step of the process.

Sept 7 to Jan 7: The exhibition will display 116 pieces dating from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty, spanning over 5,000 years of China’s history. Potteries, bronzes, jades, porcelains, gold, silver, enamel and many other Chinese treasures will be on show, selected from five museums and heritage institutions from across China. Here, visitors will also get a chance to meet the warriors who guarded the empire, the Terracotta soldiers from the First Emperor’s Terracotta Army.

VCU QATAR Through My Eyes - A Creative Photographer’s Perspective

Oct 10 - Nov 2: If your passion is to capture better photos and you are looking for a place to develop your skills, then look no further as this class is just the choice for you. MATHAF: ARAB MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Dia Al-Azzawi: A Retrospective (From 1963 Until Tomorrow)

Oct 16, 17 - Apr 16 at Al Riwaq: Curated by Catherine David, in this exhibition, QM presents a monograph of one of the most renowned modern artists of the Arab world: Dia Al-Azzawi. The exhibition showcases over 546 works across fifty years in a wide range of media. The exhibition aims at mapping an itinerary of modernism and profiles the practice of the Iraqi artist.

Oct 18 to Jan 30: In this exhibition, Mahmoud Obaidi retraces the 'organised chaos' that led to the destruction of Iraq, and presents a response to witnessing the city of Baghdad fall piece by piece. In his work, Obaidi recreates what has been stolen or destroyed to try to piece the city back together again. The exhibition shows how Obaidi is grappling with the destruction of an 8,000-year-old civilisation, which has been laid waste in less than a fraction of that time.

ARTS & CULTURE

Words and images courtesy of Jessica Furseth Additional images courtesy of Rainworks

If you look closely, cities are full of poetry. QH contributor Jessica Furseth scoured the globe in search of random and obscure poetic attractions and found plenty to love. Here are her picks for New York, London, San Francisco, and Seattle.

F

or a visitor, sights that only show up when they feel like it can be frustrating when you’re on a schedule. In New York, anyone can go look at the Statue of Liberty, but if you wanted to see the larger-than-life art of Jenny Holzer at the Guggenheim, you had to be there at the right moment in 2008. That’s when it was projected across the front of the museum: “More people and new offences have sprung up beside the old ones - real, make-believe, short-lived.” For a moment, Holzer’s bold poetry prompted New Yorkers to stop in their tracks. Temporary sights are often all the more magical; you’ve seen something that was only there for a brief moment in time. The permanent attractions are there for anyone, but these subtle, poetic

installations are often the purview of locals. Created by artists, they’re placed not in galleries but where people might not expect to come across them, rendering them all the more powerful.

and kinder than you think. It is a valley and you are a horse in it. It is a house and you are a child in it. Safe and warm here, in the fire of each other.” It read, across a giant billboard.

A few years back, visitors to London’s Shoreditch area could briefly spot the poetic art of Robert Montgomery: “This city is wilder than you think

Street poetry will often feel hard-hitting, in part, because we don’t expect to find it. Last year, locals and visitors in Seattle were treated to what was

London’s Poetry on the Underground scheme is 30 years old this year, initially launched to bring poetry to a wider audience. Shakespeare features frequently among London’s Tube poems, which may well be the perfect place to contemplate the meaning of sonnets written in Early Modern English, "Where the bee sucks, there suck I / In a cowslip's bell I lie."

Steve Powers's love letter will soon be no more!

The marquee at the corner of Turk and Larkin streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin has been called the world’s largest fortune cookie because there’s always something new to see there. The sign, with its rotating selection of quotes, is managed by Bill Brinnon, who works at the tire shop next to the sign. It’s been going since 1958, and it’s still changing every three to six weeks, depending on feedback and current events. This winter, a David Bowie quote appeared a few days after his death: “The truth is of course that there is no journey. We are all arriving and departing all at the same time.” In New York, there’s a fantastic piece of city poetry that you can still catch if you’re quick. It’s painted across the entirety of a Brooklyn parking garage, courtesy of Steve Powers. “Euphoria is you for me.” the garage boldly declares, in what has become known as a love letter to the borough. Earlier this year, the garage’s owner announced it will be torn down, causing an outcry among people who’ve come to love the upbeat poetry that you can’t help but read every time you pass it. The black and white text wraps around the entire building, creating what the artist calls a “block-long poem”. The garage is still standing, but don’t wait too long: by the spring the building and the poem too, will be but rubble on the ground. n

literally a rainy day project: local magician Peregrine Church adorned the city’s pavements with words that can only be seen when it rains. “Rainworks” used biodegradable, water-repellent spray to stencil poems onto the concrete pavement, rendering the letters dry when it rained and hence readable. “Worry is a misuse of the imagination,” declared the wet pavement, cheerily. Each poem wears off after about six weeks, but Rainworks sells kits to anyone who wants to create their own rain poetry - meaning they could pop up everywhere! The New York City subway has been treating its passengers with random moments of poetry since 1992 when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched Poetry In Motion. First off, was an excerpt from the Walt Whitman poem - Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, “Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt /Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd.”

ARTS & CULTURE

Words by Katrina Bernardo

Dance is central to pretty much every culture on the planet; it comes in many forms and is closely linked to identity. QH takes a look at the importance of dance with local experts Salsa n Candela.

D

ance is considered one of the highest forms of the performing arts, where one moves and expresses him or herself rhythmically to the sound of the music. Not only is it an intense physical exercise but it’s also become a social activity whether it is danced professionally or as a hobby.

Dancing reduces stress because it naturally boosts and stimulates a person’s brain which leads to happiness and satisfaction. Dancing is a way of expressing oneself through movement and makes a person more sociable as it requires connection and a strong bond with a partner. The Doha dance scene has evolved over the last few years, from its traditional local dances to the influence of expatriates who have contributed with other cultural and modern dances. Salsa n Candela (SNC) is a pioneer, introducing social dance classes in Doha since 2008. This includes live dance performances, social dance nights, organising events, music shows, and of course its core- dance classes. SNC is one of the major dance institutions of Doha that offers social Latin dancing classes – Salsa, Kizomba, Bachata, and Tango and has also started to offer other types of dance classes such as hip-hop and even traditional Greek dancing.

30 QH Oct 2016 - FINAL.indd 30

9/26/16 16:49

Salsa dancing is a popular type of social dancing with a strong Latin flavour from its rhythm and movement. The quick steps make Salsa dancing a great way of keeping your body fit and balanced. Salsa is all about transferring your body’s weight from one foot to the other quickly. From beginners to the advanced level, SNC knows how to train a novice dancer to become a sociable or professional Salsa dancer.

collaborated with Beats n Bytes dancers to offer hip-hop classes and shows. Traditional Greek dancing is considered one of the most ancient types of dance that is still widely practised today. It is a traditional dance form that is mainly performed during social celebrations such as religious festivals and celebrating victories. Greek dancing is generally performed by leaping and with shuffling steps in groups connected to each other moving in one direction either circularly or back and forward. In line with its speedy footwork, it increases your leg strength and endurance. It can also be danced individually.

Kizomba dancing originated from Angola, the style is slow and sensual with a touch of African music. This type of dancing is very intimate and sensual which is particularly suitable for couples. It lets you move to a slow dancing rhythm whilst at the same time being close to your partner. Bachata is another type of intimate social dancing that originally came from the Dominican Republic. In the beginning, it was actually danced to express feelings to another person. Bachata is danced with a slow hip movement and in close proximity to your partner; hence it is a very good social activity for couples too. From slow dance rhythms, SNC also offers Argentine Tango which is speedy, intense and beautiful. Tango originated in Argentina and is basically also considered a walking dance. Dancing the Tango not only helps you to be physically fit but it has also been proven to enhance your mobility, balance and core strength.

Hip-hop dancing originated in the streets of the U.S.A. and basically is danced by popping, breaking and locking. It is considered a funky type of dance where one can dance freestyle depending on the hip-hop music. Unlike Latin dancing, hip-hop is usually danced with a group which allows you to make new friends. It helps you to develop sportsmanship as it commonly danced through “battles in the streets and professionally too; it also improves memory due to its fast and quick counts on every beat. SNC

Salsa n Candela continues to venture into other forms of entertainment not only in dancing but also in the music scene by bringing international artists to the city. SNC also discovers and improves new local talents through it dance classes and builds a platform for them to perform on the local scene. n

ARTS & CULTURE

For The Love Of Dance Words by Rubina Singh

The 4th Doha Tango Festival is about to hit Doha at the end of this month, QH caught up with local dance enthusiast and organiser Anil Kumar to find out more about the event which will be held at the Intercontinental Doha The City Hotel.

W

hilst various efforts are underway to make Qatar a more striking tourist destination, an avenue that still remains relatively unexplored is the opportunity to attract music and dance tourists. Perhaps the only opportunity of this kind available in Qatar is the highly anticipated Tango Festival which takes place every year. The arts in general have some serious patronage in the country and perhaps in the future, we will see such festivals finding more sponsors and support. The festival, which takes place from the 21st to 23rd of October includes performances by worldrenowned Tango dancers, a gala dinner, followed by a Milonga (Tango dance party) and workshops for beginners and advanced dancers to improve their technique. A labour of love, the festival gets better and better with each passing year. “This year we are inviting top-class teachers from Istanbul, Argentina and Germany, and for the first time, we are inviting

organisers from the Dubai Tango Festival to be part of our event. Also, for the first time, this year we are inviting a DJ from Italy” he adds enthusiastically. Over a 300 plus audience hailing from France, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Belgium will take to the floor at the 4th International Tango festival in Qatar.

Doha resident Anil Kumar continues to diligently organise this annual dance festival with some support from the very small but passionate community of Tango dancers in the city. Bank executive by day and Tango enthusiast at night, Anil found his passion quite by chance and hopes the festival will provide a similar opportunity for others to experience the beauty and passion of this dance form. Anil hails from a humble background and started working at the young age of fifteen to support his family in India. In the absence of any sponsors for the festival, he puts at stake whatever he saves from his salary. “This year I saved even harder throughout the year to be able to afford the loss or gain, whatever it might be,” he adds, as though the financial risk is quite irrelevant. “The joy of sharing this passion and the gleam in people’s eyes as they leave at the end of the event is priceless,” he says, thanking the Intercontinental Doha The City Hotel for their continued support for the local Tango community. Asked what are the highlights of the festival for him personally, Anil says in his usual unassuming style, “The huge support from the local Tango

community and being able to make it possible for dance enthusiasts in Doha, to experience the magic of Tango without having to travel outside of Qatar is, for me, the biggest advantage from this experience.” As for the accompanying challenges, Anil says, “finances are perhaps the most crucial challenge but by sticking to a reasonable budget and with support from the local community of tango dancers in Doha, we have been able to keep it going year after year.” “For me getting into Tango was a life changing experience. It is more than just a dance. For many of our regular dancers in Doha, this is their preferred and often ,the only form of exercise. There is also an accompanying sense of social interaction, an opportunity to make new friends in a city where the population is quite transient and that has a lot of health benefits for the community.” “Along with the dancing, the festival also creates an opportunity for international guests coming for the event to experience Qatari hospitality, the culture and many of the tourist attractions of the country. It is all about your love for Tango and love always changes your life for the better in some way,” says Anil with zest. Not surprising then that Tango enthusiasts are known to travel far and wide just to attend these festivals.....all for the love of the dance! n

n 2015, Qatar Happening was honored to feature a story that highlighted the efforts of some Qatar residents in their “Climb to Heal” campaign. A delegation of eight climbers from Qatar scaled the heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro for a charity that was close to their hearts- Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF). Two of those climbers, Amina Ahmadi and Haya Al Ghanim, teamed up with the talented fashion designer, Lilian Barbosa, and have now co-founded a sportswear company named Oola Sports.

CEO and Co-Founder, Haya Al Ghanim, “My drive stems from the joy of being able to provide Muslim women and women in general with a less revealing choice of active wear, so they may take part in a whole new experience in sports and fitness.” Design & Product Development Director and Co-founder, Amina Ahmadi, says, “I want Oola Sports to encourage other women to be active, challenge boundaries, enjoy the outdoors without thinking twice about apparel and comfort.

Oola, in Arabic means - first or number one, an appropriate label for a company that aims to be the leading source for loose-fitting contemporary active wear for women in the region and globally. Oola Sports encourages a healthy lifestyle by making outdoor sports accessible to those who may have had little to no options in the current sportswear market.

A Helping Hand As told to Luciana Cunha Franca Images courtesy of Joey Pehrson (@Joeypehrson)

The One Heart Foundation does meaningful and life changing work in Kenya with vulnerable street children. The charity caught QH’s attention due to the efforts of local Qatar resident Andrea Price who has been actively involved with the organization. We took a moment to learn about this very worthy cause. QH: What is the name of the organization and what’s it all about? AP: One Heart is a not-for-profit foundation that was established in 2007 out of Australia and working in Kenya. One Heart’s primary focus is to change the future of orphaned and abandoned children living in poverty in Kenya, and in turn see whole communities transformed through education, leadership, and empowerment and most importantly – love.

One Heart currently cares for 75 orphaned children and has recently opened their first primary school, as well as a skills training centre to help better equip the surrounding community in health, business and life skills training. One Heart have set a series of goals to impact on a wide variety of people, all aimed at improving the living conditions and future of the next generation. Our goals are to break the cycle of poverty that prevents parents from providing for their own children. We do this by providing training and small business funding to empower parents to help themselves. We also aim to provide nutritional food to children that would otherwise go hungry and we do this by establishing a large farm to generate fruit and vegetables to feed the children and assist the local community. In addition we look to provide hope for a new future to unlock the potential within orphans. This is done by establishing schools and children’s boarding homes that provide a loving family environment and an education where the children can be raised and nurtured. Lastly we try to create an environmentally, financially and socially sustainable village where children can flourish for generations to come.

Education is the best gift you can give

QH: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you became involved with One Heart. AP: I come from Australia but I have been living and working in Qatar for the past 10 years. I currently work in the Sport Science Department at Aspire Sports Academy. As part of my job with Aspire, I have been involved with a fascinating humanitarian football project called Aspire Football Dreams that has given me the opportunity to travel to Africa and other developing countries. I have seen firsthand how such projects can impact the lives of these children. I decided I wanted to use my summer holidays to engage in humanitarian work. This is when I began contacting people and researching on the internet, to find a charity that I felt aligned with my own personal values and goals. A friend suggested I look up the One Heart Foundation. After some research I contacted the Founder of One Heart - Dean Landy and asked how I could visit and become involved. It was perfect timing as they were

another example. I highly admire Sheikha Mozah and the work she does with Educate A Child. Her work is obviously on a much larger scale but we are all working together toward the common goal of allowing every child the basic right to receive a good education. in the process of organizing their annual ‘Run From Poverty’ challenge which they hold each July to raise funds for the school and the orphanage – www.runfrompoverty.org. I then went to work raising funds via a fundraising page I set up. https://www.mycause.com.au/ page/123750/sponsor-andrea-in-the-2016-run-frompoverty-challenge-in-kenya I travelled to Kenya for 10 days in July which was certainly a life changing experience. So much so, I felt the need to again return in September and this time I collected hundred’s of children’s books that local Qatar residents had kindly donated to help One Heart establish a little library. QH: How is Qatar involved? AP: I was the first person from Qatar to become involved with this charity and I represent the many generous people living in Qatar that have donated money and books to assist the One Heart children. The Qatari government has always been extremely generous in helping those in need and this is

QH: How can other people become involved? AP: People can visit the One Heart Website and click on the link to ‘Get Involved’. You can sponsor a child, provide education scholarship, and get involved with the annual ‘Run From Poverty’ experience which involves visiting the One Heart Village in Eldoret, Kenya. QH: Can you tell us about your recent experience in Kenya? AP: 12 people and I travelled to Eldoret, Kenya in July for 10 days as part of the Run From Poverty Experience. We obviously spent time with the children but also met with government education officials to establish connections and set up collaborations. We also visited a local rescue centre that provides shelter to the many homeless children and this is also where a large percentage of the One Heart children come from. We then had the Run From Poverty Fun Run which also involved community members and various festivities. Whilst at One Heart, we spent time in the class rooms, assisted with painting rooms, planting trees, and building structures for the children to play on.

QH: Anything else you would like to add? AP: I encourage people to visit the website and read the success stories of some of the older children http://www.oneheartchallenge.org/the-kids/ I also encourage people to think about becoming a sponsor. It’s an extremely satisfying thing to do. I always believe the more you give, the more you receive. Or as Winston Churchill once said – ‘ We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give’. n ONE HEART FOUNDATION Website: www.oneheart.foundation Facebook: One Heart Foundation Instagram: One_Heart_Foundation You Tube: One Heart Email: info@oneheartfoundation.net To contact Andrea Price directly please email andie_price@hotmail.com

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Getting Back Into Your Groove Words by Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College Images courtesy of Doha College

The first day of the new school year is a milestone in a child’s life, whether it’s the first time through the doors or the final year of secondary education.

W

ith the initial weeks of the school term now but a memory, the majority of Qatar’s students are settling into a routine. However, some children find the transition particularly challenging. As a professional educator, I find there are some simple ways to ease the transition back into the school environment. Our youngest students—those starting in preschool and reception—have taken the first steps on their formal education journey and are most likely to be affected by this tremendous change. Classrooms are busy and exciting, which can prove tiring for young children. Afternoon snacks and time with parents after school can help your child relax and recharge. For children from Key Stage 1 and upwards, Doha College offers a wide array of enhanced curriculum activities after the school day. These clubs can be a valuable focus for new children, engaging them in an activity they enjoy whilst providing a chance to meet new friends with shared interests. Doha College introduced the “Wake Up and Shake Up” initiative last year, a weekly activity where children and parents arrive 20 minutes before school starts, and participate in a teacher-lead dance/aerobics session. This proved a very enjoyable and exciting way to start the day and was taken up by large numbers of enthusiastic children, parents, and staff. It was so successful, in fact, that the initiative has been expanded this year to include Monday Fitness, a child-friendly circuit of fitness exercises at the start-of-the-day. Feedback has come from many parents reporting that it is noticeably easier to get the children to wake up protest-free on those days.

This brings up a particularly important element that helps a healthy routine, namely sleep. It is vital that children get sufficient sleep, and this is not always easy to achieve. But implementing a bedtime routine that is unchanged each night helps diminish any tensions that could affect sleep, and makes mornings smoother. The routine should include preparing everything the child needs the night before –musical instruments, a project that is due, PE kit etc. – as well as discussing in a positive manner the events coming up the next day, even if the parents themselves might feel apprehensive (such a talk would benefit parents as well as children). Many students will be making the leap from the structure of primary school to secondary school. At Secondary, students are introduced to timetables, changing classrooms and an increased volume of homework. This additional responsibility and change can cause enormous confusion. To help your child navigate this transitional phase, look at implementing systems to remind them of their new schedules and homework requirements. Organisation is a key skill for secondary children.

A significant number of students in Qatar belong to expatriate families, which means they may have started a new school at least once. It’s therefore normal for children to take time to adjust to a new school layout and people. To alleviate some of the stress, encourage your child to take part in activities they enjoy, such as music or sport, and to keep in touch with old friends. Also, facilitate opportunities for children to make new friends outside of school, and engage them in extra-curricular activities or indeed any activity that widens their world beyond the school walls. Self-belief is a powerful tool for all students to possess and it is never more important than when we are facing a new challenge. Whether your child has entered pre-school, started in a new school here in Doha or transitioned from primary to secondary, it is essential to show them you believe they can manage in their new environment. If your child is struggling, don’t forget many schools offer pastoral care services as well as access to trained school counsellors so as to support students. n

FOOD & DINING Words By Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca

QH takes a short trip to Wahm at W Doha Hotel & Residences; the newly refurbished lounge is back with a brand spanking new look and menu!

A

rriving a little early on a hot Wednesday afternoon, Wahm still feels new since its recent makeover. Within minutes the place starts to fill up. The music reminds me of being on a beach bar somewhere in the Mediterranean but the interior could easily be from an upmarket New York or London lounge. Wahm recently underwent a total makeover and this swanky new nightlife spot has plenty of surprises. Chief among them is the amazing new food menu which is a decent improvement on the old one. Wahm translated into in English means illusion but there is nothing artificial about this simply gorgeous new look. The interiors are sleek, modern and very cool. The striking gold trim is cleverly placed throughout the venue and adds to the sense of glamour.

Time To Feast I order a beverage or two as I await the food. I then decide to pop outdoors and take a look around; the new outdoor area has just been finished and looks spectacular. There are more Cabanas than before and the whole space looks and feels a lot bigger! I go back inside where I see my first dish of the day, the Nicoise – seared tuna, green beans, tomato, olive and potato. Very nice and simple yet extremely flavoursome and well presented. The Caprese Flatbread joined us soon after, it resembled a pizza and was sizable with cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, olive oil and salt. Simply delicious! Next was the Chimichurri beef, small morsels of grilled prime beef, cilantro and homemade guacamole. Steak Au Poivre was also another highlight; the roasted beef steak was cooked to perfection and paired with mushrooms, green beans, and a slightly spicy peppercorn sauce. Yummy, yummy and yummy! Our final dish was the Scottish Salmon with sumac, asparagus and basil, which was my personal favourite and disappeared as quickly as it had arrived. For dessert we tried the W Chocolate Brownies, they came with homemade vanilla and a steamy hot chocolate sauce. Afterwards, the Chef came to our table and explained that they are looking to make a

simple menu with comfort at the core of their creations. I, for one, think they succeeded mightily. If you are craving comfort food with hearty servings styled to make anyone feel good for the day or night ahead, then Wahm is your new spot. In addition to the food, Wahm is offering a number of themed nights such as Skinny & Shims for the ladies. Their selection of guilt free skinny sips and matching bites are everything you need to shake up your Monday night! FOOD & DINING

Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia

Words and selected images by Roger Smith

In the majestic country of Georgia, seemingly simple moments can take on a certain sense of magic. QH contributor Roger Smith went to Georgia to check out their fabulous food scene.

A

n evening walk down Rustaveli Avenue, the charming main thoroughfare of Tbilisi lined with open air cafes, gorgeous shopping spots, and buskers, reminds one of why travelling can be so inspiring. As a rule, visual grandeur abounds in this fabled intersection between Europe and Asia. Mountains command reverence as do monasteries. Rivers and meadows sparkle in the temperate sun as does the pristine space-age architecture crowning the urbanspaces of central Tbilisi. Last year, Georgia saw a record number of nearly six million international arrivals; tourists from the Middle East accounting for a 46.2 % jump in its arrivals from 2014, what with affordable, quick flights from Doha to Tbilisi courtesy of airlines such as FlyDubai.

The food here, of course, is an absolute highlight for tourists. In the Georgian culinary canon, culture is a constant in the kitchen. Influences drawn judiciously from delicacies enjoyed by Greeks, Mongols, Turks, and Arabs in ancient East-West trade routes seamlessly assimilate into authentic Georgian cuisine that inhabits its own gastronomic wonderland. The country’s historical provinces have nurtured their signature culinary traditions such as Megrelian, Kakhetian, and Imeretian cuisines. However, every Georgian region submits to the sway of traditional feasts or supras. Barely an hour’s drive from the city of Batumi, in the lap of towering mountains and leafy valleys, I partook in one such supra in the village Vaio. On a perched balcony, I faced a large table teeming with an authentic Georgian spread of staggering variety. The head of the house, Makxo Gorgiladze, played both host and the role of tamada, or toastmaster, proposing toasts for twice as long as the lavish lunch would last. To introduce Georgian food to a newbie, Russian poet Alexander Pushkin’s line “Every Georgian dish is a poem” is often cited. The omnipresent Khachapuri, Georgia’s famous bread-and-cheese snack, come in three versions. The Imeruli Khachapuri resembles a pizza; its crisp,

golden brown top yields to your bite, gently letting you sink into the melted cheese inside. The Megruli has cheese and butter both inside and out. But it’s the Adjaruli Khachapuri that will send you into dreamy delirium. Imagine an oblong-shaped bread boat filled with a pool of molten Sulguni cheese, dollops of butter, and a cracked raw egg. Simply genius! The equally quintessential mainstay of local cuisine is Khinkali. These folded-up, meat-filled Georgian dumplings are wolfed down, as many as a dozen at a time, with relish. The filling of beef or lamb is uncooked during assembly but upon cooking, the meat juices are trapped inside. To avoid the dumpling from bursting, you must hold the top knot and suck the broth with the first bite, and then dig further into the filling. Slow-cooked red kidney beans get a soupy makeover in the flavourful Lobio, aided by onions, coriander, garlic, bay leaves, and a pinch of black pepper and dried blue fenugreek. Lobio is as common – Salobio near Mtskheta town and Café Leila in Tbilisi make fabulous Lobio – as its distant cousin of mashed fava beans, Ful medamas, in the Arab world. It tastes best with special corn bread - Mchadi and an accompaniment which, too, is wholesomely Georgian – Jonjoli pickled sprouts. Bristling with pungent contrast, these sprouts grow on local bushes.

Georgian scenery could easily be mistaken for the Swiss Alps!

Khachapuri - the traditional Georgian dish of cheesefilled bread

Cozy downtown Tbilisi

Then there’s Mtsvadi, which is Georgian barbecue, usually beef or lamb, cooked over an open flame; Kharcho, a beef soup, cooked with walnuts, rice, and cherry plum puree; Pkhali, a series of vegetable salads; and Shkmeruli, fried golden brown chicken cut and covered in a milk-garlic sauce, to name just a few. For the sweet-toothed, sausage-shaped

candies Churchkhela hold the cure. Dangling along every other sidewalk, Churchkhelas are made by stringing walnut halves or hazelnuts and dipping them in hot, concentrated grape juice mixed with flour. The locals lovingly call it the Georgian Snickers.

country, and one look or bite of the luscious pink tomatoes or the succulent eggplants will make you understand why. The narrative of freshness extends to its spring water reserves – Borjomi mineral water from the Borjomi springs leading the pack – and carts brimming with bright, plump fruits.

It’s interesting how food in Georgia is almost always big on flavour – thanks to condiments such as tkemali made from tiny sour yellow plums, or the clever use of ingredients like tarragon, dill, coriander, walnuts, herbs, vinegar, pomegranate grains, red pepper, and garlic.

Speaking of fruits, I waddled myself away from the table, comprehensively stuffed, just when Gorgiladze appeared with a plate of apples. Cutting some, he insisted I taste them for they were off his sprawling orchard. When I politely took one piece, his wife suggested I take along a few apples for the road.

What lies at the heart of Georgian cuisine is admittedly the quality of the produce. Blessed by a land that includes both alpine and subtropical climate zones, the yield is near-immaculate. Local ingredients are a top priority for cooks across the

That, right there, was the hearty culmination of the highs of Georgian cuisine, hospitality, and cheerful friendliness. And for once, I didn’t have to worry about any artificial wax on my apples! n

FOOD & DINING

A Very British Institution Words by Lynsey Riach

As a proud Brit living abroad, I really know my teas and even more so, I really know my afternoon teas. Perhaps up for debate is how one may ‘take’ their tea (it’s milk first if you’re wondering), but in a city such as Doha with plenty offerings of scones and jam, I’ve managed to track down the very best tea joints and brought them to you warm with a side of clotted cream. A Long Love Affair First of all, let’s discuss the somewhat British obsession with tea. We like it, it cures all stresses and ailments and really a cup of tea can just make everything seem, well better. That’s what we like to believe anyway, ask any British person and they’ll wholeheartedly agree. In fact it’s a common item packed away in our luggage just in case we can’t track it down on holiday.

The tradition and ritual of afternoon tea began circa Downton Abbey era, enjoyed mostly by the Lords and Ladies who quaffed tea whilst delicately nibbling on a selection of cucumber and egg and cress sandwiches accompanied by warm scones with jam and clotted cream. It was considered a light meal between larger meals. Nowadays, a formal afternoon tea is more of a special occasion, taken as a treat in a hotel in the late afternoon. Many consider it worthy only of those ‘ladies who lunch’ when in fact the trend is surging amongst couples and friends, rivalling the late night dining scene. An afternoon tea is often served on a tiered stand with many venues now vying to compete for our attention by offering a unique twist on this traditional meal with concoctions raging from cake pops to ice cream.

Where To Go

Brand of choice is of course a personal decision but mostly black tea or ‘English breakfast tea’ as it’s more widely known is our first choice of hot beverage.

The Ritz Carlton Just like its London counterpart, this is pure tradition. Think giant scones on offer in a beautiful tiered stand complete with gold plated cutlery leaving you feeling rather, Royal. Finger sandwiches are made to crustless perfection just as those offered back in Blighty (Great Britain) and a sumptuous selection of sweet treats are whisked out on a gold trolley for you to take your pick from.

The Brits like it with milk most of the time and that milk should be cold, never hot. One may add sugar if they like. Tea almost always tastes better when drank from a bone china cup and the pinky up cliché is entirely optional.

W Café, W Doha Hotel & Residences Like the DNA that runs through this iconic hotel brand, you’ll find a bright, modern and bold version of this classic pastime. Presented in a beautiful white birdcage, pastel coloured

macarons meet with gold cookies, mini-baguettes, scotch eggs and croissants stuffed with cheese which are neatly nestled next to red velvet cupcakes and spoons scooped full of crème brulee. Café Murano, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl With a tendency for all things chocolate, this award winning café offers up more sweet than savoury as perfect pastries and delicate delicacies sit pretty on your afternoon tea stand. Tiny sandwiches are dwarfed by chunks of cake guaranteed to be enough for all to share. Sarab Lounge, The St. Regis Doha With more than 100 teas on offer (the largest in the region), my personal favourite being the TWG coconut tea for a super sweet change, this is without doubt the place to indulge. Just like the daughter of the original St. Regis in New York City did, so-much-so they named it after her. The Lady Caroline Astor tea is wonderful all the way to the waistline. Smoked salmon with cream cheese, roast beef, chicken with tarragon and egg and cress sandwiches are stacked high above a selection of fine tarts, cakes and biscuits. Scones are warm and crumbly, served on the side with a helping of jam. And if you're feeling really hungry, then why not feast upon a beautiful buffet set-up in the hotel lobby each Saturday with unlimited tea treats set amongst twines and tea pots to give this a quirky yet still traditional feel. Pinky finger up or not – enjoy! n

SPORTS

Words by Antony D. Antoniou Photography by Jessie Palanca Additional images courtesy of Ultimate Players Association of Qatar

This month, QH has just the sport for you, it’s called Ultimate Frisbee. We tagged along to an indoor session and met up with Caz Malone, the President of the Ultimate Players Association of Qatar, and one of the founders of UF in Qatar, Ben Figgis. QH: When did Ultimate Frisbee (UF) first start up in Qatar? BF: In Qatar, it was set up in 2004. Back then they used to play at the College of the North Atlantic and then they switched to Al Rayyan Park. QH: Is Ultimate Frisbee an official sport in Qatar yet? BF: We have just recently started an official association, because to compete internationally you need to be part of a federation.

QH: How has this season been going? CM: Well it’s still early but so far so good. We are definitely looking for new players; we really welcome people even if they have never played before. QH: How can people find out more about the sport of Frisbee in Qatar? CM: For more information we have our Facebook page (Qatar Ultimate Frisbee) and we also manage a Google group too. QH: What attracted you to Ultimate Frisbee? CM: To me, Ultimate Frisbee is so unique because not only is it quite an athletic sport, but it also teaches people to be respectful of both their teammates and their opponents. You might be surprised to know that there are no referees or umpires and that means that people are responsible for their own conduct on the field. In UF, a really important aspect is ‘spirit of the game’, which is essentially, people respecting their opponents, knowing the rules and being their own referee. It can also literally help you win points in a tournament because teams are judged on spirit, which reflects how they played.

QH: Well that sounds nice in theory but does that really work? CM: I mean things can sometimes get a bit heated, especially at the higher levels of the game such as the World Championships or in the pro leagues. But, at some tournaments there are people called ‘observers’. They remain on the sidelines and if there is a foul, and the players ask for help, the observer can get involved and give their opinion. A lot of sports these days are primarily about money, sponsorship, and winning but UF is amazing because it's more about teaching participants a skill set where they are not only doing a sport and having fun but they are also learning about being a respectful person and about being a good team player - those are vital skills that we all need in life. QH: Tell us about your involvement with Ultimate Frisbee. CM: I do two things; one is that I am President of the Ultimate Players Association of Qatar. On a bigger level, I’m a Director-at-Large on the World Federation for Ultimate Frisbee, so that is the World Flying Disc Federation (www.wfdf.org). Basically we help to manage disc sports globally and UF is just one of those sports.

One of the key goals that we have is that we are pushing to be an Olympic Sport. Ultimate Frisbee has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee which means that we are well on the way to being considered as an Olympic sport. To do that though, we need to have 70 countries where UF is officially played, and we are getting close to that mark. We hope to have a chance of being included in the 2024 Olympic Games. QH: You told me earlier about creating a long lasting legacy for Qatar, tell me a little more about that please. CM: I think it would be great to have a legacy for UF in Qatar. We have already sent a team to represent Qatar at the Beach World Championships in Dubai and that was fantastic but in the end, many of us expats might leave Qatar one day. So I really want to be able to send a team of mainly Qataris to go and represent their county in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee.

QH: So when will you be playing outdoors? CM: As of October we will be playing on grass at the American School of Doha and the beach games will be on the Pearl at Qanat Quartier beach. However for the exact locations, dates, times and more info, I would recommend that people check our Facebook page. QH: Anything else you want to add? CM: If people would like to play at a more competitive level, we will be sending a team to a Middle East and North Africa Tournament, which is taking place this November in Jordan.

Then there will be some more serious tournaments in 2017 such as the World Beach Championships in France and the Asian Club Championships in the Philippines. So come along and get involved! n QATAR ULTIMATE FRISBEE Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/118283844912400/ Google Groups: sites.google.com/site/qatarulti/ For more information about the tournament in Asia, please visit www.wfdf.org

On Top Of The World Words by Rabii’ah M.

QH had the distinct honour of chatting with H.E. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al Thani about his life and his passion for mountaineering not to mention his entrepreneurial spirit. Read on and get inspired!

S

heikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al Thani is, without a shadow of a doubt, a most interesting individual. Part rugged adventurer, part entrepreneur, with a healthy dash of motivational speaker tossed into the mix, he gained fame for being the first Qatari to climb Mount Everest as well as conquering all Seven Summits. Yet, there is even more to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al Thani, as I am soon to find out. My mind is bursting with questions after having read a lot about his famous mountaineering exploits and him being a successful entrepreneur, I was intrigued to find out how he was capable of balancing so many different ventures all at once. The prospect of being in the presence of Qatari Royalty had filled me with apprehension about protocol and how I should address him, but my anxieties were quickly dispelled when we met. He was immediately personable and affable; and as we struck up a conversation, I found him to be very down to earth, kind, enthusiastic and a friendly individual with a passion for life and a desire to motivate others.

The many challenges he frequently undertook were a testament to this. By his own admission, he is an enthusiastic believer in nurturing creativity, setting goals and searching for the next big adventure. Sheikh Mohammed completed his bachelor’s in accounting and marketing as well as obtaining an MBA from the American University in Sharjah, U.A.E. He is someone who doesn’t take the easy route and often looks for a challenge. A man that, when the going gets tough and the gauntlet is thrown down, is driven to excel. Others have described him as an

efficient and creative individual who searches for unconventional methods to resolve problems and always maximises his chances of winning. Back in 2009, he started his mountaineering journey to the Everest base camp; however, it was in 2008 when he first visited Nepal that he reminisces wistfully about his guide, a wizened and sturdy man called Madin, with over 50 years experience. The guide played a vital role in inspiring Sheikh Mohammed, regaling him with tales of the history of Nepal, the monarchy and finally, Mount Everest, which he describes as “the crown jewel of mountains”.

The first Qatari to summit Mount Everest

Perseverance and patients are key to being a successful climber

Sheikh wanted to be the first Qatari to reach the summit, no mean feat indeed! Accompanied by his friends, he persevered through many trials and tribulations and realised his goals by climbing Everest as well as the Seven Summits between 2009 and 2013. Other impressive mountain ranges were soon in his sights and being crossed off his list with steady determination. However, Sheikh Mohammed is not done with mountaineering yet. He has plans to take groups to Mount Kilimanjaro once again, which he has previously climbed with 12 Qataris (six boys and six girls). They accompanied him there in 2014 as part of ‘The Arabs with Altitude’ group. He confides that his biggest fear during all his adventures was the fear of failure. Using patience and reserves of inner strength, he managed to overcome all obstacles in his way. He takes a philosophical stance when it comes to climbing, “It’s all about learning that things are not always in your hands. Sometimes you would want to climb the mountain, but the weather would be bad. No matter what one has, one needs to remain patient in such a situation.” However, in the ruthless world of mountaineering, setbacks can happen to anyone. Sheik Mohammed made several attempts to reach the summit of Everest. On his third try, he started throwing up; he couldn’t breathe and was unable to try again. At this point, he was sure something was not right and was referred to a doctor. After a thorough check up he was found to be suffering from pulmonary oedema, a dangerous condition where water builds up in the lungs. Unfortunately for the Sheik, this meant that he had to leave the mountain and return home to recover. Furthermore, he had to use an inhaler and was later found to be suffering from sport induced asthma due to extreme exhaustion.

Back in the Gulf States, Sheik Mohammed has started several businesses. He has an individual business style and likes to do things in his own way - a strategy that has led to plenty of success. There’s the Sharjah Shooting Club, where he owns several catering companies, not to mention the online travel agency Musafir.com. This innovative company started back in 2007 with the help of his business partners, Sachin Gadoya and Albert Dias. During a trip to India, Sheik Mohammed came across an online travel agency advert and was inspired to bring the idea back home with him. Currently, Musafir.com has several busy branches across the U.A.E and is the only Arab travel agency to have a presence in India. But what can someone who has achieved so much go on to do next? Well, the future is a vast unexplored wilderness for Sheik Mohammed, yet he sure doesn’t let that deter him! n

SPORTS Words by John Hunt

Qatar’s Olympic Team returned from this summer’s Olympic Games in Brazil having posted a series of performances which marked Rio 2016 as the nation’s most successful Olympics to date. QH contributor John Hunt highlights some of the numerous reasons for this, all of which bodes well for the future.

F

irst up, the contingent of 36 athletes that Qatar sent to the Games was the largest ever squad to leave the Qatari peninsula and compete in the world’s premier sporting event. This demonstrates two encouraging things, that Qatar now has more athletes of Olympic standard than ever before, and that the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) is clearly backing the country’s sportsmen and women to the hilt. Team Qatar returned from the London 2012 Olympics with two bronze medals (not a bad return given only 12 Olympians travelled), to add to two other bronzes which were won in 1992 (Barcelona) and 2000 (Sydney). This means that prior to Rio, Qatar’s tally from the nine Olympics that they attended since their 1984 début was a total of four bronze medals.

Qatar’s high jumper Mutaz Barshim making dreams come true

Bronze, Silver and...? H.E. Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani embraces high jumper Mutaz Barshim after the Qatari athlete secured a silver medal

Just one medal was won this time, which might be a source of confusion as to how Rio 2016 represents Qatar’s most successful Olympics, but the explanation is simple enough: quality always trumps quantity, and the medal that returned this summer was silver, Qatar’s first ever in the Olympic Games. The winner of this medal was Qatar’s high jumper Mutaz Barshim, who had been widely tipped for a medal beforehand (and four years after his bronze medal in the same event at London 2012) due to his consistently excellent form throughout the season. For Barshim – whose personal best jump of 2.43 metres is the second-highest of all time – bronze in London became silver in Rio and so the main question in this article is… can Barshim deliver Qatar’s first gold medal in four years’ time in Tokyo? Come 2020, Barshim will have just turned 29 and should be at the peak of his powers, so we only have four years to wait to find out if he can make Qatari sporting history!

Not A One-Man-Band But Team Qatar are not a one-man-band. Barshim’s superb silver aside, the Qataris returned from Rio with more top-10 finishes than ever before from what was a team with a very young average age, and thus, one imagines, even greater things still yet to come.

70 QH Oct 2016 - FINAL.indd 70

9/26/16 16:53

Team Qatar’s athletes competed across ten sports, with 90% of the team making their Olympic debuts, and half aged 25 or under. Qatar’s top ten finishes came in four different sports. Fares Ibrahim came eighth in the Men’s 85 kg weightlifting at just 18 years old, and Ashraf Elseify came sixth in the hammer throw aged only 21. To put that into perspective, the hammer throw was won by a 34-year-old and the silver was taken by a 40-year-old. Qatar’s handball team made it to the quarter-finals and in the Equestrian events, three of the team – Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani, Bassem Mohammed and Ali Al-Rumaihi – qualified for the final round on their Olympic debuts; Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani made it through to a jump-off and eventually finished in 6th place. These are big results for a country of Qatar’s size (with a population of just over two million people), and represent a solid foundation on which Qatar can showcase its burgeoning sporting prowess. This, of course, has long been a goal of the Qatari government: to raise the global profile of the country through sporting achievement. This was the rationale behind the founding of the Aspire Academy back in 2004. Now, the Academy is clearly beginning to bear some fruits! Qatar has also hosted a number of other important events such as the 2006 Arab Games, the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, the 2015 World Men's Handball Championship and of course, Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Speaking of his medal-winning achievement, Barshim said, “I celebrate winning my second Olympic medal and for me, that is such a blessing. The first call I received after the competition was from the Emir himself, H.E. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. None of this would have been possible without the help of my parents, everyone in my country and God. I felt like the whole nation was behind me, supporting me every step of the way.” One can be assured that they were, and one cannot help but get the impression that Qatar finds itself in a ‘good place’ as far as its sporting development is concerned; for the first time since Qatar entered the Olympic arena, their Olympians have returned with honours in consecutive Games. Who would bet against Team Qatar making it three in a row in 2020? It’s been shown that despite the country’s modest indigenous population, the talent is there, and a happy triumvirate of Aspire, the QOC and the Qatari government is pulling out all the stops to give that talent every chance to shine on the world stage. n

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Making A Habit Out Of It Words by Rowad Ehlela

Does the sound of a 30 day transformation challenge excite you? QH puts on its spandex and sweat bands as EVOLVE – Mind/Body/Soul tells us how we can achieve the results we want with just five simple habits!

J

ust so we are all on the same page, the considerations that go into a fitness programme generally should include: diet, exercise and psychology. Diet Ensuring that you are providing your body with the optimal nutrition to fuel you workouts, as well as it being within your prescribed fitness goals is key.

Now Here’s How We Achieve That Wake up early Working out in the morning is the best time of day – no excuses. It will be tough to begin with but I promise you that you won’t regret it later in the day when you have more time and energy to focus elsewhere. Meal Prep Saturdays By preparing all of your lunch meals on a Saturday you put matters into your own hands and results will follow. Gone are the excuses of not having brought lunch to work or not finding the time in the day to cook separate meals for yourself. A small sacrifice on a Saturday will benefit you through the entire week, so see it as an investment and make it a routine!

Exercise Here, you will have to consider the right workout programme that will deliver you the best results in your 30 days. Where, when and how need to be analysed.

Warm up Committing to a 30 day challenge means that you accept the challenge; I can appreciate a positive attitude in that you commit and hope all goes well but no... You need to accept the ugly part; the days when you feel run down and don’t want to work out, perhaps Netflix and ice cream are calling you?

Psychology Mind-set is very important as you will have to rely on it to carry you through the entire 30 day challenge.

By warming up your body, you will feel a whole lot more energised once you have the endorphins flowing and the likelihood of you cancelling the workout will drop significantly.

Yes I can More than just maintaining your motivation throughout your programme, it is imperative that you develop a strong sense of drive as an individual during this period – listening to key motivational speakers goes a long way. You will then begin to see how this spreads throughout your life and not just on the gym floor. Self-Reflection Throughout the challenge I would advise that you track your thought processes to gain a greater understanding of yourself. Note what drives you, what worked for you and what didn’t? This is an individual journey you are on and the opportunity to get to know yourself on a deeper level is great – use this platform wisely. I would recommend either Yoga or meditation once a week where your sole objective is inner reflection, delegate a time in your calendar and stick with it. n Get yourself on track to optimal health by learning more about EVOLVE –Mind/Body/Soul’s services. QH SENSATIONS

Promenade des Anglais

Nice city on the Côte d’Azur is the perfect place to bask in the sun, to take in the breeze of the Mediterranean, to revel in history & art, and to even see the stars at night. This month QH takes you to discover the beauty of France.

I

t could only be referred to as destiny that F. Scott Fitzgerald, Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Chagall and many others found the French Riviera to be a true haven. Nice is the principal port city of the region and departure point to discover the rest of the Côte d’Azur. With the Mediterranean as its backdrop, a provençal setting, picturesque landscapes, warm weather year round, and easy access to the smaller seaside towns (some dating back to classical times) sprinkled all up and down the coast; it is no surprise that Nice is a Shangri-La for aristocrats & the bon vivants, and the second most visited destination in France.

Upon arrival and once settled in, I go for a leisurely walk on the Promenade des Anglais (the walkway of the English). It is a wonderful way to take in the shoreline and the pastels and cobalt blue of the Mediterranean. The promenade was named in the 18th century after the many British visitors that would flock to Nice to escape the harsh northern European winters. On one side you have views of the sea and on the other, the majestic Belle Époque hotels that have made Nice a playground for the affluent for so long: from the Hotel Negresco, the Palais de la Méditerranée, the Westminster Hotel & Spa to the magnificent Opera house. With these views you’ll quickly come to realise why visitors fall in love with the Côte d’Azur and Nice. Go

for a dip in the bluest waters—do come prepared for the pebbled lined beaches though, so pack sandals in your tote. For a great photo op, walk to the Old Town, or rummage through the rows of antique and vintage finds in the open market, and you must not forget to enjoy a gelato in the main square.

Galeries Lafayette

The black and white chequered tiles will let you know when you have arrived at Place Massena– the square of Nice. The square divides the old and new towns and is lined with shops and restaurants. This is the place where the locals congregate as they go about their daily routine. Sit at a café; enjoy a coffee and do some people watching. The tram runs through the centre of the plaza, but for the most part it’s pedestrian only. Here you’ll also find France’s celebrated department store - Galeries Lafayette.

Chagall Museum

For lunch, I recommend a five minute walk to the recently opened Sentimi Restaurant in Place Garibaldi. It serves up freshly made pasta. The Mozzarella di Bufala might just make you cry with

glee, and owner Fabio really understands the importance of good customer service. He greets you at the door with a smile and makes you feel like family. Head right next door for dessert. It’s a staple of Nice, Le Café de Turin—make sure to indulge in a tartelette crème pistacheet fruits rouges (a pistachio cream tart with red berries). It is creamy and decadent and so appropriate for these parts. Sentimi Restaurant

The tram, Place Massena

Time to take in some art, head to the Matisse Museum (Musée Matisse) and admire its extensive collection of sublime masterpieces. The permanent collection is displayed in a magenta red 17th century villa and houses oil paintings, drawings, sculptures, even tapestries. About a 15-minute downhill walk and you arrive at the Chagall Museum. There is also the option of taking the bus to the museum (bus number 15 or number 22 toward Nice). This museum is housed in

a modern building and has a much smaller collection but if you take the audio tour it is very extensive in its explanation of the artwork and the artist. The outside garden café is great for refreshments and you can enjoy the complimentary Wi-Fi too. Another great spot to visit is the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur. The main dome houses an 18-meter long telescope that was once the world’s largest, and the afternoon tour includes visits to the surrounding forest. Built by Charles Garnier and Gustave Eiffel, the observatory played a symbolic role in Woody Allen’s film Magic In The Moonlight. The French Riviera is certainly a place to set your sights, and Nice being its little darling, the first of your many stops. From the Mediterranean Sea, to art museums, to great food, to its friendly people, what more could one want? n

the restaurant, I’m constantly reminded of the azure waters just outside and I just can’t wait to dive in later on.

volleyball court, water sports, a fully equipped diving centre, 9-hole golf putting course, helicopter pad and an observation area.

QH rules the waves this month as we head to Banana Island Resort by Anantara for a two day staycation on this luxury island, because someone has to!

The restaurant itself is very nice and spacious, with plenty of options. The dining area is surrounded by huge windows, giving one the opportunity to gaze out onto the Gulf Sea as the mesmeric Arabian sun sets in the distance.

Anantara Spa

All Aboard! It takes only 20 minutes to make the 11 km distance to the island by catamaran and what a vessel she is! Spacious, well appointed and modern. The staff are friendly and we are offered complimentary water and dates as we sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

I’m informed that the brunch every Friday and Saturday are well worth the trip. You can Savour mouth-watering buffets featuring Indian cuisine, sushi and seafood – highlighted with live cooking stations and show kitchens during the weekends. A la carte menus cater to your gourmet tastes with exciting flavours such as Western, Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines, signature dishes, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, inventive mocktails, as well as coffees and teas.

After taking in all that the island has to offer I need a bit of a rest. I take a five minute trip from my room to the Anantara Spa. I meet my massage therapist for the day, a lovely chap named Chola who shows me the facilities which are second to none, four single treatment suites, each with a steam room, two couples' suites, two double Thai massage suites, private facial treatments, pedicure and manicure room, wet facilities (Moroccan and Turkish Hammams), indoor pool, ice well, sauna, Jacuzzi and steam rooms as well as male and female hairdressing salons.

Once we arrive, we immediately slow down to the pace of Island life, the atmosphere at the resort is completely different from what I expected, and I don’t really feel like I’m in Qatar anymore. The place reminds me of the beautiful pacific islands or somewhere like the Maldives.

Next, I ‘m shown around the impressive resort which although is still in the throngs of summer, is at high occupancy, I’m informed. It seems that after Ramadan many locals and residents like to escape from the city and head to the resort.

My treatment is called the Anantara Signature Massage which lasted a glorious 90 minutes. It combined revered eastern and western techniques as well as designed movements with their signature oil blend. The massage itself stimulates circulation and deeply relaxes muscles. Meanwhile, the reflexology cleared blockages of energy and left me gently dozing off by the end.

The Island

Dinner

We jump on a golf buggy and make our way to my home for the night, I am staying in a Junior Suite on the second floor and the views over the bay are breathtaking.

On my whistle-stop tour, I see that there are many different types of properties on the island, as well as an 800-metre long white sand beach.

A quick change of clothes and leisurely two-minute walk to Ted’s American Diner had me transported to yet another continent. A fun and quirky little restaurant with a strong Americana feel, I was in for a treat.

Day One

Time To Refuel Before I even have a moment to taken in the beauty from my private balcony, I am whisked away to enjoy a lovely buffet lunch at Azraq restaurant- Anantara’s all day dining outlet. With an aqua theme pervading

In addition, there is a cinema, eight pin bowling centre, wellness centre, nine dining options, a Spa, a fitness centre, a tennis court, private marina for up to 30 boats, 100 metre long lagoon pool, two-lane surf pool, children’s pool with water-slides, indoor botanical garden, children’s club, teens’ club, beach

I tried a kofta burger with yoghurt dressing and fries and for my drink, I was recommended to try a yummy chocolate milkshake to end a day that I will remember for some time to come.

Sublime luxury, as no expense is spared

Day Two I was once again back at Azraq, the all day dining restaurant where I tried a traditional Qatari breakfast as well as a refreshing morning shake. I should mention that the restaurant is located inside a huge Polynesian-style wooden hut called the Balance Wellness Centre. It features eight treatment rooms, two consultation rooms, male and female relaxation areas, a female only hydro pool and of course, the majestic indoor botanical garden. Next on my itinerary was yet another treatment, which was also conveniently located in the Balance Wellness Centre. I started off with a quick check up which involved standing on a device which sent electric currents through my body. The results of the test were good, phew! We then proceeded to the treatment, I chose the Tibetan massage. This, essentially involved something called Acupressure, which is one of the oldest and most widespread healing methods in the world. By using deep finger pressure at certain points on the body, my therapist reduced tension, increased circulation and helped ease any aches and pains. It is a part of Chinese Traditional Medicine and often described as "Acupuncture without the needles".

I have to say that the surf pool experience was a personal highlight for me; the instructors gave good advice and quickly helped me get to grips with it. After five minutes, I was balancing without holding the board and I even tried a few spins. I would highly recommend it but don’t expect to master it the first time.

Until Next Time Before I knew it, it was time to check out. The hours simply flew by. I had one final meal awaiting me at Nahham, their Arabian dining restaurant. The eatery is shaped like the bow of a boat and has the best view of any restaurant in Qatar (the calm Arabian Sea).

Surfs Up!

We tried an array of dishes, each more flavoursome and beautiful than the next, especially the mixed grill, the restaurant is a must try, if you go to the resort. The choices on offer will have you automatically booking a second visit, that’s for sure.

Now that I was all relaxed thanks to the Balance Wellness Centre, I decided to finally take a dive into the sea. The beach was well kept and the sea was just perfect, I floated around for a bit getting myself ready to hit the surf pool, which I heard can be hard to master.

All in all, this was two days full of fun, surprises and relaxation. Once back on the “mainland”, I felt like I had just returned from a far off magical land. I felt refreshed and ready to head back into the heat and fast-paced lifestyle of Doha. n

QH SENSATIONS

Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Images courtesy of Jessie Palanca

We all want to feel fabulous and have the youthful complexion that we see in glossy magazines. This month QH went to the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village & Spa to put a new concept to the test, and see if it lived up to the hype. Ladies and Gents I introduce to you the Intraceutical Oxygen Facial.

I

arrive for my appointment in high spirits and with great expectations- and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The spa decor was a classy fusion of rustic charm and elegant luxury that emanated a positive aura.

I’m greeted at reception by Santos and Criscia. Both are exceptionally polite, professional and make me feel completely at ease. Criscia gives me a brief tour of the facilities (which are larger than I expected) and briefs me regarding how I should prepare myself for my treatment. My eyes soak up the ornate decor as we drift from room to room, a serene sense of calm already beginning to seep into my body. I’m introduced to Komang, who’ll be my therapist. She explains to me everything about my facial. Her knowledge on the subject is outstanding and she can tell I’m clearly excited to begin! I learn that the Intraceutical Oxygen Facial is one of the newest anti-aging treatments, and hails from Australia. The basic concept of the treatment is to apply oxygen under light pressure from an oxygen wand to deliver active ingredients to deeper layers of the skin. The key ingredient of the product is hyaluronic acid, a molecule that is found naturally in our skin.

Rustic charm delights and comforts the senses

You should see and feel a difference right after your first session, results that only improve over the following days with continued use of accompanying home products. The results of one session are said to last for up to seven days! Komang advises me that the facial session with the infusion technique will take approximately 50 minutes. I lay on the treatment bed and we begin. Firstly, my skin is cleansed, then exfoliated. After that, my dermis is analysed to choose the appropriate type of serum. I am asked which one I would like to have and I simply told them that I would happily go along with her recommendation. There are three different serums available: Rejuvenate Serum, Opulence Serum, and Atoxelene Serum. All the serums contain hyaluronic acid and a combination of vitamins and antioxidants. Komang explains the benefit of each serum to me: • Rejuvenate Serum: gives deep hydration, increases firmness/plumpness, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and gives a radiance to the skin’s appearance. • Opulence Serum: helps uneven skin tone look brighter, gives radiance/glow to dull skin. • Atoxelene Serum: helps smooth and soften the visible signs of aging. In today’s session, Komang recommends that I try the Rejuvenate Serum. The facial combines several different processes. The first step is a serum infusion layer using the oxygen wand. I can attest, it feels absolutely fantastic. Even though it's only a facial treatment, my whole body and mind feels completely relaxed. The next step is the second layer, where an application of Hydration Gel is applied, to seal in moisture and create an invisible barrier against dry skin. At this point I have to admit that I felt so comfortable, I nodded off for a few minutes on the bed! But there was even more to come. The third and final step is a layer of Binding Cream. It’s a combination of vitamin A, C, E and green tea extract which protects skin against environmental stress. Komang gently applies the cream for several minutes. The

sensation is so wonderful that I can feel all cares or worries dissipating as I lie there. Eventually, (wistful sigh) the treatment is over. All good things must come to an end. I'm so relaxed that it takes me some time to stand up and start moving again. Once I do, I’m really impressed by the results I see in the mirror. My skin looks healthier and firmer. The difference is visible. My verdict? I can confidently recommend this treatment to anyone whose skin needs a little pampering. After my treatment, Criscia is waiting to guide me to the relaxation room, where I lie down and drink a delicious cup of ginger tea to complete a perfectly pampered session. n SIX SENSES SPA Location: Sharq Village & Spa Spa opening hours: 6:00 a.m. till 11:00 p.m. Seven days a week Timings for treatments: 9:00 a.m. and the last booking is at 10:00 p.m. Contact info: Call 4425-6999, email reservations-sharq-spa@sixsenses.com or visit www.sixsenses.com

Are you new in town and feeling a little lonely? QH introduces you to Qatar Expat Women, a local organisation that is a home for women who are far away from home.

T

here’s a saying that ‘No man (or women for that matter) is an island’. Everybody needs someone to talk to, to seek advice from and share feelings with. Most people here in Doha are expats. Those who came with their family are lucky but what about the women who arrived here alone? If you are feeling a tad isolated or are new to the country then perhaps choosing a social group is your next step, this is a quick and easy way that allows you to make friends and get advice as soon as you arrive. However, choosing a group isn’t easy and it’s vital that you find one that fits you. Carole Astin is the founder of Qatar Expat Women (QEW) which she started back in October 2014. She is also very active on social media and full of good advice for those new to the State of Qatar. Qatar Expat Women is a lively group of multicultural ladies with a mission to help as many women as possible in the transition from their homeland to life as an expat, and to make it a positive and empowering experience. Qatar is an amazing place to live, filled with many rich opportunities. QEW is a community group (a non-profit organization) run by amazing volunteers, who are willing to share their experiences and are ready to lend a helping hand. QEW meet for friendship, café chats, volunteering and cultural events. Each gathering brings a new mix of diverse women, who come together for companionship and mutual support. QH: So how did this whole thing get started? CA: I started a Facebook page with only me in it at first, after been here almost a year, I still felt a little isolated. I did join a few groups but found

them to be quite segregated into their respective nationalities which I found strange, because we all live in a multi cultural country. At the time, I felt there was nowhere I could go to say I was having a bad day. I needed support for a short time and there was nowhere to go. So I decided to create it and that's what I have done. We have almost 7000 members in the Qatar Expat Women's positive support group on Facebook, plus our page is about to reach 11 thousand likes, and our website has been viewed 35k in an unbelievably short amount of time. When I started the group I realised something was needed to support women with the transition of leaving their homeland to becoming an expat. I certainly did not realise how much until now! QH: So do you hold events at your gatherings? CA: Yes we do, for example we did an event called Embrace Doha which was great, we have also did one called Glam Your Image and also we did a nutritional and healthy lifestyle event too. We have some other events we would like to try such as art therapy, cooking lessons as well as coaching and empowerment events. QH: Anything you would like to say to aspiring members out there? CA: Yes, attending a newcomers’ group in a new land is probably the best thing you will do. After joining, you will immediately find new friends. I have to admit that I owe my favourable time here in Qatar to this group with all the beautiful friends I have made. By finding a gateway into the international community, you will receive the support you need in your new home. Qatar Expat Women think outside the box. The point is that we cannot limit ourselves to being the person we were back home, and the situations we lived before, however difficult it is, we left our countries and our acquired experiences abroad change us. By acknowledging this transformation and embracing it, we empower ourselves to move forward with confidence. This is what I did, and you can too with the help of Qatar Expat Women. n QATAR EXPAT WOMEN Contact: Call 3077-1895 Email: qatsup2014@outlook.com Visit: www.qatarexpatwomen.com
