Srimani I recently found a great shortcut to prepare my one of the favourite meals using Ragu Cheesy Roasted Garlic Parmesan sauce – it’s delicious. When I saw the bottle on a rack at Mega Mart, I had to grab it. With a young child and a newborn at home, meal times at my house need to be quick and easy. I just followed the short recipe instructions on the back of the label and gave it my own twist. Vincent Corver

The Qatar’s Choice Awards will be the biggest extravaganza ever staged in the country. The organizers are determined to push the boundaries and present a show of the highest calibre. One of the main acts is locally-based pianist Vincent Corver, whom QH had a chance to talk to recently. A concert pianist, Corver was born in Holland. He started his professional musical education at the age of 12, at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, while studying with Marlies Van Gent and the renowned concert pianist Geoffrey Douglas Madge, graduating Bachelor of Music in 2004. During this early period he performed in concert series with the Holland Festival, orchestral performances with Stravinsky in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Utrecht Vredenburg, Steve Reich Festival The Hague, Klang Ensemble and a De-Bondt world première piece with the Loos Ensemble.

Corver is currently recording under the renowned EMI Classics CD Label.

Leaving Holland for new musical challenges, Corver was accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in London, concluding his Masters of Music in performance studies with Joanna McGregor and Daniel-Ben Pienaar in 2007. While studying at the Royal Academy of Music he founded the London Steve Reich Ensemble, with Kevin Griffiths as Principal Conductor. The London Steve Reich Ensemble has established itself as a world-class ensemble with concerts at London’s Duke’s Hall, The Cheltenham Music Festival, The Orpheum Festival in The Tonhalle Zurich, The Schönbergsaal in Holland and world-premiere choreography by William Tuckett and the principal dancers of the Royal Ballet, London.

VC: I am a concert pianist at heart; it is something I will never give up and will always do. But while in London I got very interested in the world of piano retail and decided I wanted to explore that part of the business. I was quite successful in London and decided to start my own business in Switzerland. It taught me the piano from a business side as well from artistic side.

QH: At what age did you start playing the piano? VC: I started playing the piano at the age of six. At really early age I had a dream I won a piano competition, and the price was a grand piano, and in that moment I knew I wanted to play the piano and strangely enough I knew I was going to become a pianist. At the age of 12 I enrolled in the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. I studied there intensively for 13 years, six years of high school and music, five years of professional music education and after obtaining my Bachelor in Music I did two more years to have my masters at The Royal Academy of Music in London. QH: Tell us about your career.

QH: What has been your biggest achievement as a pianist? VC: I am currently pre-nominated for a Grammy Award. The results haven’t been published yet, but I have hope my chances are strong to be with the last 5. I feel very fortunate to have made it this far.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE QH: Who has been your biggest musical influence? VC: I was educated as a classical pianist. However noticing Classical Music isn’t gaining huge popularity internationally, I started to focus in more on the popular scene. In that journey I became very fond of Michael Jackson’s music. He became a type of a model but translated this to piano music. Before he died I had the unique opportunity to meet him. I met him with his family in Harrods, London, where we had a brief moment together, finally playing “We Are The World” to him at the piano. My other musical influence has been my long life friend and fellow student Giorgio Tuinfort. He has produced for the world’s greatest musicians like Michael Jackson, Akon, David Guetta, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie and many more. We are currently working together on regular basis. QH: Tell us about your job in Doha. VC: My sponsor here is CDC, Qatar Construction Development Company. A very inspirational company to work for. I was asked to manage the Steinway Piano Gallery Qatar showroom - operating all sales and Steinway Concert activities throughout the Middle East region. The piano gallery in Qatar is the only one in the GCC and one of the very few in the whole Middle East. QH: How did you get involved in the Qatar’s Choice Awards? VC: I was approached by the organizers and I thought it was a great opportunity to be part of something new and unique in Doha. Also the awards will serve as a platform for the world premiere of my new video ‘Why’. The video is about relationships that fall apart, it’s like a silent movie on the vulnerability of life and how fragile people and life itself is. The video was produced Nyk Schmalz, a locally established film producer QH: What’s music to you, what inspires you to compose? VC: Music is like painting and choosing colours that just fit the right emotions. It is about converting feelings to sounds. 21

Oktoberfest lands in Qatar, well, this October. QH spoke to the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band to find out how Doha is gearing up to celebrate the most popular German event in the world.

ktoberfest is an annual event held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany that runs for 16 days from late September to the first week of October and is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest fair with more than six million people participating every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture and is also held in many other cities around the globe, including Doha. This year festivities will take place at the InterContinental Doha Hotel. It may not be a 16-day fiesta, but it will still be a rockinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and explosive jubilee from October 3-6. The Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band is the main act; we caught up with them to get the scoop.

QH: Tell us how the band came together?

QH: How many countries have you performed in?

VXOB: Most band members already started to play instruments during elementary school and after a few years they joined a brass band which exists in every Bavarian village. After several years of practice in local brass and pop bands the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest band was found in 2005. The band consists of eight members and has become popular because of our unique performances at festivals, weddings and parties.

QH: What do you love most about being on-stage? VXOB: To bring and share our traditions, our music, our outfits and our mentality to the world.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE QH: What’s the importance of Oktoberfest? VXOB: Oktoberfest is a traditional Bavarian event. The first Oktoberfest took place in 1810 in Munich and it’s developed into the biggest outdoor festival worldwide. The fascination of Oktoberfest is that nations, colour, status and religions take a back seat and more than six million people celebrate this festival peacefully together. This creates the unique Oktoberfest atmosphere which connects people and makes them return every year. This is the reason why Oktoberfest is more than just drinks and pretzels. QH: What does Oktoberfest mean to the band? VXOB: Oktoberfest is mainly pleasure and not hard work for the Voigas Xelchten members. We are living our traditions and the Oktoberfest mentality. Performing music is fun for us and the audience can see and feel that during our shows. QH: How did you end up playing at the Oktoberfest celebration at the InterContinental Doha Hotel? VXOB: In 2009 some of our Qatari friends recommended the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band to the host, the InterContinental Doha Hotel. The management was excited about our demosongs and a few days later we landed the job.

QH: Describe your music; what can people expect from you and what do you expect from the crowd during Oktoberfest? VXOB: The guests can expect a show that creates an original Oktoberfest atmosphere. We play traditional Bavarian and Austrian folk-music followed by several show acts and games where we try to involve the audience (for example Schunkel-warm-up, Schuhplattel-lesson, folk-dance, Dirndl-contest, Jodel-lession and more). The band will also perform some vocal and instrumental solos to show the musical quality of each of the eight band members. Like at the original Oktoberfest the band will of course also bring some fun to the audience by performing famous Oktoberfest and partypop-hits. No expectations from the guests except that they should be curious and prepared for a remarkable night. VXOB: The ability for improvisation is a must when performing Bavarian Oktoberfest music because usually a lot of guests are asking the band to play specific songs. Hence we are very flexible during our shows and improvisation is a part of our job.

QH: How do you describe the style of the band? VXOB: Outfit-style: The guys are performing in the traditional leather trousers called ‘Lederhosen’ and our two ladies in a beautiful ‘Dirndl’ – the traditional dress in Bavaria and Austria. Music-style: We perform Bavarian and Austrian folk music but we also throw some party music in the mix – kind of what’s right for the occasion. Party-goers all over Doha can rejoice as the always popular beach parties are making a comeback after the summer break. World-class DJ and producer Paul Mendez, local-based talent Jared McCulloch, and DJs Jade Rox, Steve Kz and Xwolf will be rocking the beach at the InterContinental Doha Hotel on Thursday, September 6. QH has your full access to the party of the month.

here are times you hear a beat so powerful and hypnotic that your entire body and mind can’t help but to take that vibe to the dance-floor. That’s exactly what will happen this September when you hear the sounds of trance, house and chill-out music played by some of the most prominent DJs in Doha. After a hot summer where Doha’s party scene took a break, event organizer and DJ Jared McCulloch is bringing the city’s nightlife back to life. ‘SUCQ’ – or ‘Stand-Up Comedy Qatar’ is a group of trail-blazing, rib-tickling funnies pushing the boundaries of what’s witty here in Qatar. QH sits down with resident stand-up and founder, Halal Bilal.

QH: How did the troupe get started? HB: SUCQ started in 2010, soon after I moved to Qatar. I got together with three amateur comedians who were struggling to get opportunities to perform so I started building a local, homegrown comedy scene. We now have over a dozen comedians who perform with us. QH: How do you rate the calibre of comics here? HB: All the comics I work with here are new and inexperienced - but compared to what I’ve seen across the world, some of them are very talented. Issa El-Fahoum is one of our youngest comedians - for his age, he has a great presence on stage. Ousama Itani used to do improv comedy in Texas before he moved here. He’s doing well as a stand-up and is also helping us get into more improv. It’s difficult to get Qataris to try out, but Abdulla Al-Ghanim is helping to change that. He is one of the few local comedians and that means he can joke about stuff that others can’t. 28

QH: What topics are tackled on the SUCQ stage?

QH: If someone is keen to give comedy a go, how can they get involved?

HB: Each comedian has his or her own flavour so it’s always very different. It’s such a diverse group of nationalities that just the cultural influences are very interesting. But since we all live in Doha, we do tend to tackle a lot of the daily experiences here.

HB: Before every show I organize a workshop session for anyone keen to try out comedy - those interested can email me directly for details at halalbilal@gmail.com.

QH: What has been the reaction to the group? HB: Comedy is still fairly new here in Qatar so we are not only training and assisting comics, but also educating and creating an audience to this particular form of entertainment. So, we try to make all our shows appeal to a wide audience - familyfriendly, halal (meaning clean) humour! We have been getting mostly good feedback, but every so often there is someone who gets offended. Thankfully it’s been nothing too serious because once people understand what it is that we’re doing they tend to relax a bit more. QH: You say comedy can ‘’make the world better’’. Tell us how? HB: In different places I think it happens in different ways. In my native South Africa, comedy was crucial to break down racial stereotypes for example. Here, I believe it’s helping us bring together people that otherwise don’t socialize and mix. Hopefully, over time, we can use comedy to break down barriers between all the different communities that live in Qatar.

As Qatar continues to expand its horizons as a hub for arts and culture, there’s still one area where resources are slim: the underground music scene. QH sat down with Qatari music producer Faraj Al Kuwari, aka DJ Youngstar, to find out exactly how much local talent is out there and what the future might hold for homegrown sound.

QH: Is the underground music scene here in Qatar as big as we think it is?

QH: Tell us how you found yourself in the local music industry here in Qatar. Was mixing and producing something you always had a passion for growing up? FA: Since I was a kid I was collecting music and that was my passion. Then I got this idea that I want to do something with the music I have, so I tried to figure out how to synchronize two songs together. Then I came across a friend of mine who’s a DJ, and at that time in the late 80s in the Middle East and especially for us in the GCC we didn’t even know what a DJ was, so I asked him how he does what he does and he showed me the right way and I’ve just taken it from there. 30

FA: You know, when you say the word ‘underground’ about the music scene here in Qatar, I don’t know if it’s the right word for it or not. Because for me growing up with the kind of music I did and having lived in different countries the underground is always there. It’s always the base and the foundation for everything. What I see here in Qatar is a group of people trying to express themselves with their music, but I would call it more of a ‘shallow’ scene, it’s not an ‘underground’ scene. That’s why when I hear people talk about the underground scene here in Qatar they’re usually [referring to] house parties. But to me the underground scene is all the music lovers: musicians, DJs and even listeners gathering to collaborate and go out and have a good time. But I don’t see this here in Doha. I feel sorry for the scene here in Qatar actually.

QH: There’s a huge push for Qatar to promote itself as a growing hub for arts and culture in the Middle East, but currently there is still no music program aside from classical training available at the post-secondary level. What is your comment on that? FA: We’re moving towards 2022 very soon, so by this time we’d expect to have a lot of different flavours [in the music scene]. As you said there’s classical music and others arts programs but when it comes to electronic music, it’s not there. There is no support of any kind actually, and I hope we see more support from the radio stations and other music followers to make it happen one day. There are a few things we’ve done to expose our music, such as beach parties and other events, which was fine at the beginning but now there are different rules and higher prices for venue and regulations.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE So it’s going to be difficult for new musicians to break out, but because of that you find a lot of DJs will work abroad instead of working here. So I hope in the near future, radios station and clubs will think about it and start to push and support electronic music artists and not focus only on how much money they make as we have many talented local DJs. QH: You’re actually signed with record labels in Serbia, the U.S., Italy and Spain. What has your experience in the industry abroad been like? FA: Yes, I signed with a few record labels this year. I travel a lot with my DJ career and when you want to play in a different country even that can sometimes be a challenge when hardly anyone has heard of you at first. So to be on top of your game you need a good promoter to promote you or go the hard way and let your music speak for itself so the rest of the world can hear it. And oh boy, that’s

going to difficult for a lot of the DJs out there, because some of them don’t produce music. So work hard to get what you want because nowadays the music industry is all about business and who you know. QH: As the country moves toward the 2030 Vision do you see more openness in supporting your art form eventually coming to the forefront? I’m hoping it’s going to develop and I’m hoping it’s going to grow a lot. The chance and potential is there, so there just needs to be that one right person to think about it and take it seriously [at the decisionmaking level] and hopefully things will be good for everyone. Practice makes art; that is my word to people. I’ve been making music since 2003 and it’s just paid off this last year, so never lose hope, don’t give up, practice and you will achieve it. Be honest with yourself; don’t think you’re the best or the worst

in terms of DJs or producers. If you are a producer focus on the style that you like and I assure you, you will find your way. You’ll find some people will dislike your music and you’ll find some people will like your music; same thing with DJs – even if you’re number one in the world. There’s no time-frame for it. You may reach your goal in a week or in one year, so it’s all about staying focused and having faith in yourself and what you do. As the city counts down to calling ‘action!’ on this year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival, QH zooms in for a close-up. Cue our three protagonists to shed some light on the fast-growing potential to tell compelling stories through film right here in Qatar. Zaina Salameh 21, from U.S.A. Cinematographer, Editor, Storyteller ‘‘I always knew I wanted to be in the creative industries and with the full support of my family, pursued my calling and applied to Northwestern University here in Qatar (NUQ). I was accepted. I was ecstatic. I knew this would give me the best possible platform to try my hand across the whole digital arts and production process. I learned how to be a one woman show and can shoot, direct, edit and even animate. Now having graduated, I have all the skills to get out there and produce beautiful, powerful films. That’s my job. To make stories as compelling as they deserve to be, and as visually beautiful as they can be. The project that I’m working on at the moment called ‘Qatar Unified Imaging Project’ which is funded by the Qatar National Research Fund see’s me take up the role as filmographer to tell the stories and document the days of old in Qatar. We are speaking to people of the older generation and have found they really want to tell their stories from the past, they actually feel the need to tell them, so that they will not be lost. It’s so important so we can learn and feel like we belong. How can we build a future unless we can remember our past? This is a powerful testimony to just one of film’s uses here in Qatar. I think Qatar has enormous potential to be on the global film-making map, I really believe the decision makers are dedicated to supporting the cinematic art and rising film community here. 44

Alex Klim, 34, from Austria Director, Editor, Storyteller ‘‘I was excited about the possibilities of film and stories from a very young age. I made my first stop motion film with my toys when I was a small boy and I used to shoot little films with my friends, from as young as ten. I was always the director of course; I needed the outcome to be in my control, even then. To this day I love the possibilities of film - the different routes and journeys it can take you on. For example, here in Qatar I made a short film about one of the violinists in the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Now I am friends with many of the cast members and am recording interviews about their lives and experiences of Qatar. That’s what film does; it encourages you to feel part of something. It helps us to understand each other and bring people closer together. There is a lot of potential for the film industry to thrive here in Qatar but it needs more people to truly engage. We have created a DSLR workshop that will help encourage people who share the same passion to come together, so we are very excited about that. We need initiatives like this to build a film community, not just one or

two filmmakers working alone. For example, there is a large local photography community, which is great and most of these cameras now have video compatibility so what we are saying is why not expand your knowledge and creative scope into video – especially if you have the technology already. It’s much easier today for film-makers to get their projects off the ground and promoted, too. I think DFI and the DTFF should continue the momentum as many local and MENA region filmmakers have the opportunity to express themselves and produce great work and I am looking forward to a bright future for the industry. ’’

‘‘I always wanted to be a director but as there was no film school in Syria, I decided to do advertising. Later on, I did a film course and shot my first film, Flu, in 2010. I like to tell stories that may make a difference and I believe in the magic of movies and the power of making a difference. I live to tell stories. Right now I am excited to be in Qatar as there is big hype surrounding the film and arts industries. There is still a long way to go, but already there is big potential. I feel like there is talent worth noticing here, whether we are talking to a local or an expat, your story is always original because of the nature of the country in which we all share our experiences Qatar. Everyone views it from a different angle, which is inviting for storytelling. I think by creating a partnership between the young and old we can do more to grow the local community. Qatar imports many things, so importing more talent will definitely add to the industry. I think DFI for example is a fantastic initiative and I would like to see it focus even more on local talent and act as a bridge between the local talent and the rest of the world. Being in a more conservative society, people may think that we are more limited in how creative we can be but I think limitation sometimes can be a blessing for creativity, sometimes. Look at Iran, with a much more conservative society, yet Iranian cinema is everywhere. They overcome their limitations. It depends on the filmmakers themselves, you have to open opportunities for you and look for a creative solution. I would like to see the local scene here grow and overcome its challenges and become a voice for filmmakers. I can’t wait to see it mature and to blossom. ‘’ 45

From ancient artifacts and historic collections to contemporary treasures, Qatari art, and quirky trinkets, these community-led contributions shaped an exhibition that represents the shared heritage and passions of individuals from Qatar and beyond. The Mal Lawal Exhibition is about the impact every collector and artist can have, and has had, on Qatar’s journey through the past and into the future. It is an exhibition that reflects not only on the nation, but a peek into the lives of the people who make up a country.

The exceptional objects in this exhibition tell a very personal story about the people who have collected them. It is testament of their passion for artistic expression and culture and their conscious decision to preserve and maintain all forms of artistic expression. It is also important that collectors preserve the art as it will benefit future generations, offering them a way to learn from the past while highlighting how even the most ordinary objects can evolve over time to gain great value.

Collected and curated by the Qatar Museums Authority, the original works of art in this exhibition trace the development of Qatar’s arts scene, and some of its most important leaders as well as emerging talent.

One of the main collections being shared in Mal Lawal is presented by the Qatar Museum Authority featuring contemporary Qatari artists. “What is extraordinary about this exhibition is that every object tells a tale – there is a hidden narrative in everything on display. Where did these objects come from, who made them, how did they come to be in Qatar today? Similarly, the paintings tell another kind of story, one of visual expression. Why these works of art were created? What creative forces drove the development of these works that we see before us today?” Hala Al Khalifa, Education Manager, Public Art Department, Qatar Museums Authority said. 46

September’s here again and that means the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra opens its new season with a thundering crescendo on September 22. QH brings you front row centre with all the details.

pening night at the QPO promises to be a treat for concert-goers as Doha’s most talented musicians bring Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto to the stage at Katara. If this piece sounds familiar it’s because those with keen ears will recognize it from countless cinematic soundtracks over the years. Its melodic harmonies have made it’s excerpts the most-used in movie scores over any other selection of music. Think Shrek 2 and Spider-Man 3! Taking the lead on the ivories will be special guest pianist Dmitris Sgouros. Hailing from Greece, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 12 and hasn’t looked back since, studying at the Royal Academy of Art in London and was even featured on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in his youth, receiving honours from iconic pianist Arthur Rubinstein.

Rubinstein is reported to have said, two months before his passing: “I thank God for keeping me alive so that I would be able to hear with my own ears Sgouros play. He’s the best pianist I have ever heard, including myself.”

Mr. Anmar Faris was attracted by the old style of the Qatari architecture in Souk Waqif and the

beauty of its old buildings which he visited several times to produce some of the photographs in the exhibition. Mr. Anmar also visited many ancient villages and fortresses trying to capture the essence of Qatari Heritage architecture. Twentyfive works have been selected for this exhibition and they invite the visitor to meander between heritage and future architecture landscapes in Qatar, a great opportunity for to find bridges between both. The liberation struggle of South Africa is one filled with memories of smoke, barricades of burning tires and devastation of petrol bombs, while the repression of black South Africans became increasingly inflammatory in the ensuing decades. This exhibition attempts to record South African collective memory, their rich history, heritage and national pride. Ultimately the exhibition honours all those who contributed to author the South African historic Liberation Struggle from 1910 by taking part in the country’s freedom fight.

Following an exhibition by six female Qatari artists earlier in 2012, the Visual Art Center is now proposing the work of six prominent and contemporary relevant Qatari male artists.

At the core of hospitality are people, but, the majority of hotels run to serve a bigger commercial goal: to turn a profit. At Qatar’s newest address, the K108 Hotel Doha, they’re turning that theory on its head by donating no less than 100% of all proceeds to charitable causes! QH finds out more with Mr. Tommie Liem, the GM of this petite-sized hotel with the huge heart. QH: As a charity hotel are you compromising on services and facilities? TL: To the contrary, we may be small, but we are maximizing our services and standards so that we can generate more for the greater good. We have 108 rooms which are priced at $108 U.S. dollars per night. We have a restaurant called Yum Yum where Chef Hugo Coudurier takes dining to different perspectives. He produces cuisines from fresh ingredients and our daily changing menu is reasonably priced so the customer gets maximum value. We are opening our outdoor pool, café and gym on the hotel rooftop and spa facilities very soon, too. We have valet parking, room service, laundry – everything you’d expect from a hotel, we just offer it at a more affordable rate so we can sustain the longevity of the project. QH: The concept of a charity hotel in Qatar’s bustling commercial hospitality marketplace is previously unheard of. Tell us the story behind it. TL: The hotel is a homage to the late father of its owner, H.E. Yousuf Hussein Kamal, who inherited the land where the hotel is situated. That’s where the ‘K’ comes from. The profits K108 Hotel Doha earns are given to individually-tailored charity cases, with decisions made on a case-to-case basis. It is a very unique hotel. 58

QH: What causes will the hotel help and how are the funds managed? TL: K108 is part of the Diafa Investment Company, part of Kamal International which has a charitable branch called the Kamal Foundation. They have a team who manage the funds and projects. The main focus is schools and underprivileged children in other countries. They also assess case-by-case applications to support needy people here in Qatar with things like social emergencies and medical costs.

QH: What are the benefits of working for a charitable hotel? Does it add pressure knowing that your success can impact others’ lives so significantly? TL: It adds good pressure and keeps us motivated. 80% of our staff have never worked in a hotel before but we are employing them for their selflessness, altruism and their passion to make a difference. We will teach and train them the required skills. This makes for a very organic environment and increases employee satisfaction and loyalty to our organization. We are all working towards a common goal and there is a lot of positive energy around the hotel. It is very rewarding. QH: What impact do you think K108 will have in the market? Do you think there should be more charity hotels in wealthy economies? TL: It’s still very early days but we will focus on maintaining the quality and standards. This is our greatest challenge. Looking ahead, once we are 100% established here, there may be plans to make the hotel international so we are feeling very positive about the future and potential legacy of this unique concept hotel. e all know the adage that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. But very few restaurants well and truly practice what they preach. Yum Yum at the K108 Hotel does just that – breaking the mould when it comes to giving back. At this warm open-concept restaurant set in the heart of the city’s old Al Ghanim district, French-Canadian chef Hugo Coudurier is doing something extraordinary with the most simple and freshest of ingredients. We’re there early on a Wednesday night and the dining room fills up fast as the sun sets over the Corniche through the restaurants bank of picture windows. This place is a not-sowell-kept secret as the crowds attest. Tonight Chef Hugo has created a special tasting menu for us that consists of, well, practically the entire menu! A humble guy who would much rather be tucked behind his serving stations in the kitchen than out here in front of the cameras, Hugo explains that he often changes the menu on a regular basis, every few days or few weeks depending on his inspiration and the availability of fresh ingredients.

We start with a delectable trio of dips: hummus, moutabel, tabbouleh and a mouthwatering green pea soup with feta and basil. Each spoonful tastes garden fresh and if there’s one thing to be said about the menu at Yum Yum’s there’s no shortage of colour on the plate and palate. Next up is a foie gras on toast that’s so buttery I can feel it dissolve on my tongue. Paired with some bitter rocket leaves and a tangy honey-mustard sauce it’s delightful. Our mains are a tempting trio: sesamecrusted hammour with eggplant tahine and a date juice reduction, Beef filet mignon with pomme puree, gravy and carrots and a parmigiano and basil ravioli with a fresh tomato sauce that’s absolutely to-die-for. Each dish is simple elegance with the flavours balancing perfectly, all earthy and fresh and completely unpretentious. Dessert is also a delight as our tastebuds are treated to the most succulent chocolate soufflé, a sweet fruit tart and a tangy selection of fresh pear and lime sorbets. But even after all that, it’s still not the best part of the meal. The full price of each and every menu item goes to charity – every last cent.

You get fantastic value for your money and is all part of the unique concept of the K108 Hotel: each room costs 108 U.S. dollars a night and all proceeds go to help disadvantaged youth in Asia to support schooling and emergency healthcare needs for under-privileged workers right here in Qatar too. he Kempinski Residences & Suites, Doha houses a stylish restaurant called Aroma and as its sensual name suggests, the top-notch resto serves provocative mouth-watering dishes that would please the most demanding of palates. Aroma captivates with an elegant atmosphere, a menu that is strategically designed to seduce diners that are eager to be impressed. The chic wooden décor and high ceilings gives you a sense of exclusivity and transforms your meal into a high-end experience. While at Aroma we were pampered with an array of different starters, soups, main courses and desserts. We start out with a Foie Gras Terrine (Chamomile jelly, saffron chutney) shaped in the form of a delicious vegetable mini tower. The Diver Scallops with Sevruga caviar on top and broccoli cream is as exquisite as we expected, while the Sesame Crusted Tuna Loin surpasses our expectations. We anticipate that more visually attractive and savoury food is on the way and we are not wrong.

The Pumpkin Cream is particularly tasty and the Moroccan Pea Soup with confit of duck -even though it’s a bit spicy- is equally good. Next we’re served three different main courses that include a Mediterranean-style Sea Bass fried to perfection accompanied by braised fennel, crab risotto and steamed lettuce balls. The sea bass was followed by a beautifully garnished Sous Vide of Chicken filled with smoked beef bacon, spinach with potato mash, baby carrots and savoy cabbage on the side. And last but definitely not least, Chef Spiteri amazed us with a 200 gram Sage Derby Wagyu Burger with caramelized red onions, truffle aioli, and spicy potato wedges; a simple yet scrumptious, juicy burger. It won’t take long for Aroma to be known as the restaurant that serves the most elegant and delicious burgers in town. And let’s not forget the original desserts specially conceived by the chef for Aroma. All dishes are a visual delight and it’s hard for us to even sink our forks into any of them without feeling a little sorry for destroying these beautiful creations that look more like small sculptures than plates of food. The award-winning restaurant is one of the places we recommend you visit if you are up for attractive looking food that taste as good as it looks.

This month, the Qatar Stars League will kick off their new season. Be part of one of the most exciting and rapidly expanding leagues in the world. One that has opened its doors to some of football’s biggest names and given them a new home in a competition that grows from strength to strength every year. The Qatar Stars League is back for a new season and promises to bring excitement to all football fans across the country. This summer alone, 19 different nationalities have either arrived for the first time or moved to new teams within the QSL. Players hail from Morocco, Spain, Australia, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, the Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Algeria, Iraq, Burkina Faso, Peru, Holland, France, Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia and North Korea. Add all of those nationalities to the cream of Qatar’s very own home-grown talent and you get an idea of the melting pot currently bubbling away. There aren’t many bigger names in football than former Real Madrid superstar Raul. There aren’t many better endorsements than the one he gave after signing a one-year deal with Al Sadd. “It is like joining a new family,” the Spanish superstar said. For a player who openly admitted to falling out of love with football a few years ago, the excitement he feels at playing in the QSL is sure to be matched by the fans that see this global superstar for themselves. After all, this is a man who won seven ‘La Liga’ titles during his time with Real Madrid. A man who lifted the Champions League Cup three times and left the Bernabeu holding the club record for goals scored and games played. His achievements would take an entire other

article to record and analyze. When you begin to look at the calibre of players on offer in the QSL this season, football all over the region will realize there is something for everyone. Especially when one of the most talented players on show is a national hero. Not only are Lekhwiya the current champions, they have also signed one of Qatar’s favourite players. 99

Sebastian Soria is a QSL phenomenon. With the exception of two years in Uruguay, Soria has dedicated his career to his country to help the game blossom. His star began rising during two seasons with Al Gharafa. A goal every two games endeared him to the fans before he left as a champion and a hero. His move to Qatar SC did nothing but bring further success to Soria as a player and Qatar SC as a club, winning the Heir Apparent Cup in 2009. It was here the striker began to show how special he was; his outstanding ability to find the net attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Udinese, Getafe and Atletico Madrid all courted Soria. Where the lure of European football may have proved too much for some players, the 28-year-old put his country first and stayed. All good things must end, however and Soria did eventually leave – but only to join Lekhwiya. Champions last year, it will take something special to stop them again with this talent in their midst.

One thing is for sure, Al-Rayyan have set out their stall to try their best. The Lions want to roar this season. With Brazilian superstar Nilmar on board, who would be foolish enough to say they won’t have a chance? A thrilling talent and still only 28-years-old, Nilmar will surely light up the QSL this season. This maverick talent was a superstar in his homeland with Corinthians and a fan favourite while he was at La Liga side Villarreal. This striker was born to do one thing – entertain. An astonishing 102 goals for club and country since his professional debut in 2002 is testament to this. The four year deal he signed in July won’t last long enough for the football purists who want to enjoy Samba skills at their best. And if he really wants to be a success, all he has to do is follow the lead of fellow countryman Adriano. His debut season in the QSL was nothing short of spectacular. An incredible strike rate of 18 goals in 20 games helped El Jaish finish second in the league last year and immediately justified his decision to sign a three-year-deal. The next two years promise to be extremely exciting.

Nilmar for Al Rayyan If Brazilian superstars are what you really want to watch, Al-Gharafa have produced their very own box office attraction. Alex might not sound as exotic as other South American exports but there can be no denying the excitement he evokes once he steps on to a pitch. This 30-year-old made his name with Brazilian super club Internacional, scoring 56 goals in 168 games. He spent time in the burgeoning Russian Premier League with Spartak Moscow where he starred as captain. Life as a left back was wasted on Alex and he was quickly promoted to an attacking left-midfielder. That decision has served the clubs he’s played for well. There is no reason why that won’t continue during his time with The Cheetahs.

Al-Arabi have followed the lead of their QSL rivals to sign their very own Socceroo. Matthew Spiranovic spent five years in the German Bundesliga with Nuremberg before expanding his horizons in Japan with the Urawa Red Diamonds. The 24-year-old defender has experience of Under-17s and full national squad for Australia. The decision to sign a two-year deal when he has the best years of his career ahead of him simply highlights the lure the QSL offers modern day footballers operating at the top level. Joining Alex at the Al-Gharafa Stadium is Australian powerhouse Mark Bresciano, a player who has operated at the highest level for both club and country. At the age of 32, Bresciano is hardly in the twilight of his career. His career started to flourish in Italy with Empoli where he played 80 games. Another 123 games for Parma, 107 for Palermo and a further 20 appearances for Lazio give an indication of the calibre of this player. The fact he hit double figures in the goal stakes for his first three Italian clubs further prove his pedigree. Bresciano was rewarded with a starring role for Australia at the 2006 World Cup, playing every game against Japan, Brazil and Croatia. The fans of Al-Gharafa will take this player to their hearts, knowing 100 per cent commitment is the minimum he gives.

Some players in the QSL have had a smooth transition. Contracts have ended and the path to Qatar has been hasslefree. Dioko Kaluyituka is not one of those players. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kaluyituka had to fight hard for his dream move to Qatar. A fierce dispute broke out when this powerful striker tried to leave his former club TP Mazembe. Knowing a deal with Al Ahli hung in the balance, the 25-year-old took his case all the way to FIFA before he was granted permission to sign. A threeyear-deal was duly signed as Kaluyituka scored 13 goals in 20 games. His QSL adventure continues this season after completing a loan deal with Al Kharaitiyat. Not to be out-done, Al-Arabi have lured their very own star signing to help with

their latest league campaign. Moroccan midfielder Houssine Kharja arrived in the Middle East to do nothing other than build on a reputation he carved out in the heady heights of Italy’s Serie A. The 29 year old Moroccan started his career with French giants – and Qatari owned – Paris Saint German before eventually establishing himself in Italy. An initial spell with minnows Ternana led to a move to Roma. In 2006 Genoa signed Kharja for 6.5 million euros. Karja spent 15 games on loan with Serie A giants Internazionale before moving to Roma. This summer the lure of the QSL was too big to refuse as Kharja sought a fresh and exciting challenge for his career, signing a two-year-deal with Al-Arabi.
