RECOMMENDS
We’re back from the summer break with a round-up of our favourite things for fall!
EDITOR’S PICK: Ashlee This summer I had the chance to travel to Europe and it was an experience I won’t soon forget! What helped me along the way was a really cool find called My World Travel Journal. Published right here in Qatar by resident Adele Badenhorst, this beautiful book is divided into different geographical sections with information on each region and allows you to keep track of where you stayed, what you ate, what you saw and any other personal notes you’d like to jot down about your travels. With colourful pages and illustrations by Sylvia Gomes it’s the perfect memento to remember your trip. Visit www.myworldtraveljournal.com to find out more and order your copy.
Laura A new hotel opens in Doha every day (or at least it feels like every day, right?) but, what about a boutique hotel that donates 100% of its profits (yes, I did say ‘’100%!’’) to charity? Definitely special. That’s why this month I’m obsessing over the K108 Hotel. It’s a real gem that seems to have it all because on top of its give-back ethos it has super-friendly staff, homely design, views to take your breath away and food that wow’s without breaking the bank. I’m not afraid to gush ‘’I’m a fan!’’ and I recommend you be, too. Flick to our Community section this month to find out more about this hotel with a heart.

It may only be September but Breast Cancer Awareness Month is coming up sooner than you think in October. I think it would be a great idea to get a head-start in supporting the cause by ordering these pink ribbon temporary glittery tattoos, (they come in sets of 10). Not only will you be giving to a great cause you’ll look fabulously glamorous as well! Little girls will love wearing them too. They cost $5.95 U.S. and can be ordered at www.pinkribbonshop.com.
I recently bought a Mango Quilted Bowling Bag in black and I love it. It’s roomy but not too big and I can bring all my essentials with me everywhere I go: makeup, mobile phone and even my lunch. The style is classic, it goes with all the clothes I wear and is the perfect accessory for my style – and yours!

Srimani I recently found a great shortcut to prepare my one of the favourite meals using Ragu Cheesy Roasted Garlic Parmesan sauce – it’s delicious. When I saw the bottle on a rack at Mega Mart, I had to grab it. With a young child and a newborn at home, meal times at my house need to be quick and easy. I just followed the short recipe instructions on the back of the label and gave it my own twist. It’s fantastic with chicken, pasta or vegetables and I’ve saved this amazing chicken with fried rice recipe to use again. My entire family loves it! Ragu original recipes available at: http://www.ragu.com/recipes.
Jenny A woman’s must have! Palazzo pants have really come a long way since they were introduced in the 1930’s. Today, modern styling has turned this over- the- top trouser into a wearable outfit that can be worn by any woman, even those who are considered plus-size. This apparel has never been outdated because of its elegance. They may look like pajamas but the fabric that makes these trousers is comfortable and chic, as they come in silk or other light and comfy blends. Summer is totally fun when you have at least two of these wide and stylish trousers in your wardrobe.

Qatar’s Choice
Awards By Jorge Granda and Sarah Mroueh
Your city, your choice. Your lifestyle, your voice. It’s undeniable that Qatar is blooming in every aspect of the hospitality industry. From landmark restaurants to five-star hotels, resorts and destinations, Qatar is experiencing the fastest growth in this sector than any GCC nation. In recognition of Qatar’s efforts and vision, Qatar Happening Magazine, in association with ILoveQatar.net and DIYAFA, will celebrate the best of Qatar this October. Come and experience the award ceremony of the year! The Qatar’s Choice Award is an award bestowed by Qatar Happening Magazine, ILoveQatar.Net and DIYAFA to recognize professional excellence in restaurants, hotels, personalities and live events. The first formal ceremony to present the awards will be held on October 17 at Al Gassar Resort in West Bay. The organizers aim to make the Qatar’s Choice Awards the most prominent award ceremony in the nation. 18
HISTORY OF THE AWARDS The idea of awarding the best in the hospitality industry was conceived by Qatar Happening a few years ago. The winners were announced in the pages of the popular magazine on a monthly basis. The award ceremony itself was initiated at DIYAFA in November 2011 and it was first called the QH and ILoveQatar.Net Awards, with the ceremony held at the Doha Exhibition Center. The first annual Qatar’s Choice Awards are designed to recognize and award the industry’s leading practitioners and outlets through a public-choice voting system. Qatar’s hospitality industry will be judged by its clientele –the residents
of Qatar- across 26 categories. It’s a format of competition that is sure to energize the industry and bring to light many hospitality professionals and outlets unknown to the wider public. 100% PUBLIC CHOICE The Qatar’s Choice Awards will be the nation’s first and only platform where the final choice of winners is chosen completely by the public. By putting the choice in the public’s hands, the awards program will recognize the hospitality industry’s best and brightest- not through criteria laid out by judges, rather by allowing the public (which experiences these services everyday) to vote on Qatar’s best.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE
CAPITALIZING ON SOCIAL MEDIA Qatar’s residents express their wildest wishes and deepest insights on social media. With a social media penetration rate higher than any other nation in the GCC, the Qatar’s Choice Awards are ideally suited to take advantage of the immense opportunity of engaging the public in judging the best of the best within the hospitality industry. Aiming to create a nation-wide buzz, the Qatar’s Choice Awards will be fun, dynamic, user-friendly and most importantly, will provide a glimpse into the public’s outlook into the hospitality sector. VOTING SYSTEM Join us in selecting the best and brightest from the entertainment and hospitality industries throughout 26 categories of nominees and see who comes out on top this October. Voting is simple. Visit www.qatarchoiceawards.com and sign up for free. Once you’ve registered you can access the list of nominees and select your favourite – or nominate one of your
own! After the nominees are tallied, the top five finalists in each category will be announced and you can vote again for the winners. This competition is, after all, about you and the faces and places you love in Doha. You’ve made this city your home, now make it your own and rock the vote. The Show
20
Vincent Corver
The Qatar’s Choice Awards will be the biggest extravaganza ever staged in the country. The organizers are determined to push the boundaries and present a show of the highest calibre. One of the main acts is locally-based pianist Vincent Corver, whom QH had a chance to talk to recently. A concert pianist, Corver was born in Holland. He started his professional musical education at the age of 12, at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, while studying with Marlies Van Gent and the renowned concert pianist Geoffrey Douglas Madge, graduating Bachelor of Music in 2004. During this early period he performed in concert series with the Holland Festival, orchestral performances with Stravinsky in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Utrecht Vredenburg, Steve Reich Festival The Hague, Klang Ensemble and a De-Bondt world première piece with the Loos Ensemble.
Corver is currently recording under the renowned EMI Classics CD Label.
Leaving Holland for new musical challenges, Corver was accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in London, concluding his Masters of Music in performance studies with Joanna McGregor and Daniel-Ben Pienaar in 2007. While studying at the Royal Academy of Music he founded the London Steve Reich Ensemble, with Kevin Griffiths as Principal Conductor. The London Steve Reich Ensemble has established itself as a world-class ensemble with concerts at London’s Duke’s Hall, The Cheltenham Music Festival, The Orpheum Festival in The Tonhalle Zurich, The Schönbergsaal in Holland and world-premiere choreography by William Tuckett and the principal dancers of the Royal Ballet, London.
VC: I am a concert pianist at heart; it is something I will never give up and will always do. But while in London I got very interested in the world of piano retail and decided I wanted to explore that part of the business. I was quite successful in London and decided to start my own business in Switzerland. It taught me the piano from a business side as well from artistic side.
QH: At what age did you start playing the piano? VC: I started playing the piano at the age of six. At really early age I had a dream I won a piano competition, and the price was a grand piano, and in that moment I knew I wanted to play the piano and strangely enough I knew I was going to become a pianist. At the age of 12 I enrolled in the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. I studied there intensively for 13 years, six years of high school and music, five years of professional music education and after obtaining my Bachelor in Music I did two more years to have my masters at The Royal Academy of Music in London. QH: Tell us about your career.
QH: What has been your biggest achievement as a pianist? VC: I am currently pre-nominated for a Grammy Award. The results haven’t been published yet, but I have hope my chances are strong to be with the last 5. I feel very fortunate to have made it this far.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE QH: Who has been your biggest musical influence? VC: I was educated as a classical pianist. However noticing Classical Music isn’t gaining huge popularity internationally, I started to focus in more on the popular scene. In that journey I became very fond of Michael Jackson’s music. He became a type of a model but translated this to piano music. Before he died I had the unique opportunity to meet him. I met him with his family in Harrods, London, where we had a brief moment together, finally playing “We Are The World” to him at the piano. My other musical influence has been my long life friend and fellow student Giorgio Tuinfort. He has produced for the world’s greatest musicians like Michael Jackson, Akon, David Guetta, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie and many more. We are currently working together on regular basis. QH: Tell us about your job in Doha. VC: My sponsor here is CDC, Qatar Construction Development Company. A very inspirational company to work for. I was asked to manage the Steinway Piano Gallery Qatar showroom - operating all sales and Steinway Concert activities throughout the Middle East region. The piano gallery in Qatar is the only one in the GCC and one of the very few in the whole Middle East. QH: How did you get involved in the Qatar’s Choice Awards? VC: I was approached by the organizers and I thought it was a great opportunity to be part of something new and unique in Doha. Also the awards will serve as a platform for the world premiere of my new video ‘Why’. The video is about relationships that fall apart, it’s like a silent movie on the vulnerability of life and how fragile people and life itself is. The video was produced Nyk Schmalz, a locally established film producer QH: What’s music to you, what inspires you to compose? VC: Music is like painting and choosing colours that just fit the right emotions. It is about converting feelings to sounds. 21

Celebrate Oktoberfest 2012 By Jorge Granda
Oktoberfest lands in Qatar, well, this October. QH spoke to the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band to find out how Doha is gearing up to celebrate the most popular German event in the world.
O
ktoberfest is an annual event held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany that runs for 16 days from late September to the first week of October and is the world’s largest fair with more than six million people participating every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture and is also held in many other cities around the globe, including Doha. This year festivities will take place at the InterContinental Doha Hotel. It may not be a 16-day fiesta, but it will still be a rockin’ and explosive jubilee from October 3-6. The Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band is the main act; we caught up with them to get the scoop.
22
QH: Tell us how the band came together?
QH: How many countries have you performed in?
VXOB: Most band members already started to play instruments during elementary school and after a few years they joined a brass band which exists in every Bavarian village. After several years of practice in local brass and pop bands the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest band was found in 2005. The band consists of eight members and has become popular because of our unique performances at festivals, weddings and parties.
VXOB: Nearly all over Europe and in Qatar.
See also www.xelchten.com
QH: What do you love most about being on-stage? VXOB: To bring and share our traditions, our music, our outfits and our mentality to the world.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE QH: What’s the importance of Oktoberfest? VXOB: Oktoberfest is a traditional Bavarian event. The first Oktoberfest took place in 1810 in Munich and it’s developed into the biggest outdoor festival worldwide. The fascination of Oktoberfest is that nations, colour, status and religions take a back seat and more than six million people celebrate this festival peacefully together. This creates the unique Oktoberfest atmosphere which connects people and makes them return every year. This is the reason why Oktoberfest is more than just drinks and pretzels. QH: What does Oktoberfest mean to the band? VXOB: Oktoberfest is mainly pleasure and not hard work for the Voigas Xelchten members. We are living our traditions and the Oktoberfest mentality. Performing music is fun for us and the audience can see and feel that during our shows. QH: How did you end up playing at the Oktoberfest celebration at the InterContinental Doha Hotel? VXOB: In 2009 some of our Qatari friends recommended the Voigas Xelchten Oktoberfest Band to the host, the InterContinental Doha Hotel. The management was excited about our demosongs and a few days later we landed the job.
QH: Describe your music; what can people expect from you and what do you expect from the crowd during Oktoberfest? VXOB: The guests can expect a show that creates an original Oktoberfest atmosphere. We play traditional Bavarian and Austrian folk-music followed by several show acts and games where we try to involve the audience (for example Schunkel-warm-up, Schuhplattel-lesson, folk-dance, Dirndl-contest, Jodel-lession and more). The band will also perform some vocal and instrumental solos to show the musical quality of each of the eight band members. Like at the original Oktoberfest the band will of course also bring some fun to the audience by performing famous Oktoberfest and partypop-hits. No expectations from the guests except that they should be curious and prepared for a remarkable night. See also http://xelchten.com/musik-videos QH: What are your thoughts on improvisation, do you do it? VXOB: The ability for improvisation is a must when performing Bavarian Oktoberfest music because usually a lot of guests are asking the band to play specific songs. Hence we are very flexible during our shows and improvisation is a part of our job.
QH: How do you describe the style of the band? VXOB: Outfit-style: The guys are performing in the traditional leather trousers called ‘Lederhosen’ and our two ladies in a beautiful ‘Dirndl’ – the traditional dress in Bavaria and Austria. Music-style: We perform Bavarian and Austrian folk music but we also throw some party music in the mix – kind of what’s right for the occasion. Show-style: Better you come and join us at the InterContinental Oktoberfest 2012! ‘SUCQ’ – or ‘Stand-Up Comedy Qatar’ is a group of trail-blazing, rib-tickling funnies pushing the boundaries of what’s witty here in Qatar. QH sits down with resident stand-up and founder, Halal Bilal.
SUCQ Founder, Ha
lal Bilal
QH: How did the troupe get started? HB: SUCQ started in 2010, soon after I moved to Qatar. I got together with three amateur comedians who were struggling to get opportunities to perform so I started building a local, homegrown comedy scene. We now have over a dozen comedians who perform with us. QH: How do you rate the calibre of comics here? HB: All the comics I work with here are new and inexperienced - but compared to what I’ve seen across the world, some of them are very talented. Issa El-Fahoum is one of our youngest comedians - for his age, he has a great presence on stage. Ousama Itani used to do improv comedy in Texas before he moved here. He’s doing well as a stand-up and is also helping us get into more improv. It’s difficult to get Qataris to try out, but Abdulla Al-Ghanim is helping to change that. He is one of the few local comedians and that means he can joke about stuff that others can’t. 28
QH: What topics are tackled on the SUCQ stage?
QH: If someone is keen to give comedy a go, how can they get involved?
HB: Each comedian has his or her own flavour so it’s always very different. It’s such a diverse group of nationalities that just the cultural influences are very interesting. But since we all live in Doha, we do tend to tackle a lot of the daily experiences here.
HB: Before every show I organize a workshop session for anyone keen to try out comedy - those interested can email me directly for details at halalbilal@gmail.com.
QH: What has been the reaction to the group? HB: Comedy is still fairly new here in Qatar so we are not only training and assisting comics, but also educating and creating an audience to this particular form of entertainment. So, we try to make all our shows appeal to a wide audience - familyfriendly, halal (meaning clean) humour! We have been getting mostly good feedback, but every so often there is someone who gets offended. Thankfully it’s been nothing too serious because once people understand what it is that we’re doing they tend to relax a bit more. QH: You say comedy can ‘’make the world better’’. Tell us how? HB: In different places I think it happens in different ways. In my native South Africa, comedy was crucial to break down racial stereotypes for example. Here, I believe it’s helping us bring together people that otherwise don’t socialize and mix. Hopefully, over time, we can use comedy to break down barriers between all the different communities that live in Qatar.
COMING SOON: The Second Doha Comedy Festival! Details to follow at the troupe’s website!

As Qatar continues to expand its horizons as a hub for arts and culture, there’s still one area where resources are slim: the underground music scene. QH sat down with Qatari music producer Faraj Al Kuwari, aka DJ Youngstar, to find out exactly how much local talent is out there and what the future might hold for homegrown sound.
QH: Is the underground music scene here in Qatar as big as we think it is?
QH: Tell us how you found yourself in the local music industry here in Qatar. Was mixing and producing something you always had a passion for growing up? FA: Since I was a kid I was collecting music and that was my passion. Then I got this idea that I want to do something with the music I have, so I tried to figure out how to synchronize two songs together. Then I came across a friend of mine who’s a DJ, and at that time in the late 80s in the Middle East and especially for us in the GCC we didn’t even know what a DJ was, so I asked him how he does what he does and he showed me the right way and I’ve just taken it from there. 30
FA: You know, when you say the word ‘underground’ about the music scene here in Qatar, I don’t know if it’s the right word for it or not. Because for me growing up with the kind of music I did and having lived in different countries the underground is always there. It’s always the base and the foundation for everything. What I see here in Qatar is a group of people trying to express themselves with their music, but I would call it more of a ‘shallow’ scene, it’s not an ‘underground’ scene. That’s why when I hear people talk about the underground scene here in Qatar they’re usually [referring to] house parties. But to me the underground scene is all the music lovers: musicians, DJs and even listeners gathering to collaborate and go out and have a good time. But I don’t see this here in Doha. I feel sorry for the scene here in Qatar actually.
QH: There’s a huge push for Qatar to promote itself as a growing hub for arts and culture in the Middle East, but currently there is still no music program aside from classical training available at the post-secondary level. What is your comment on that? FA: We’re moving towards 2022 very soon, so by this time we’d expect to have a lot of different flavours [in the music scene]. As you said there’s classical music and others arts programs but when it comes to electronic music, it’s not there. There is no support of any kind actually, and I hope we see more support from the radio stations and other music followers to make it happen one day. There are a few things we’ve done to expose our music, such as beach parties and other events, which was fine at the beginning but now there are different rules and higher prices for venue and regulations.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT & NIGHTLIFE So it’s going to be difficult for new musicians to break out, but because of that you find a lot of DJs will work abroad instead of working here. So I hope in the near future, radios station and clubs will think about it and start to push and support electronic music artists and not focus only on how much money they make as we have many talented local DJs. QH: You’re actually signed with record labels in Serbia, the U.S., Italy and Spain. What has your experience in the industry abroad been like? FA: Yes, I signed with a few record labels this year. I travel a lot with my DJ career and when you want to play in a different country even that can sometimes be a challenge when hardly anyone has heard of you at first. So to be on top of your game you need a good promoter to promote you or go the hard way and let your music speak for itself so the rest of the world can hear it. And oh boy, that’s
going to difficult for a lot of the DJs out there, because some of them don’t produce music. So work hard to get what you want because nowadays the music industry is all about business and who you know. QH: As the country moves toward the 2030 Vision do you see more openness in supporting your art form eventually coming to the forefront? I’m hoping it’s going to develop and I’m hoping it’s going to grow a lot. The chance and potential is there, so there just needs to be that one right person to think about it and take it seriously [at the decisionmaking level] and hopefully things will be good for everyone. Practice makes art; that is my word to people. I’ve been making music since 2003 and it’s just paid off this last year, so never lose hope, don’t give up, practice and you will achieve it. Be honest with yourself; don’t think you’re the best or the worst
in terms of DJs or producers. If you are a producer focus on the style that you like and I assure you, you will find your way. You’ll find some people will dislike your music and you’ll find some people will like your music; same thing with DJs – even if you’re number one in the world. There’s no time-frame for it. You may reach your goal in a week or in one year, so it’s all about staying focused and having faith in yourself and what you do. We want to know your opinions on improving infrastructure and support for the local music scene. Get in touch with us on Facebook or Twitter @qatarhappening and tell us your thoughts. Want to know more about DJ Youngstar? Tune in to his mixes on http://soundcloud.com/ youngstar or http://facebook.com/ youngs2ar and catch him every weekend as resident DJ in Wahm at the W Hotel.

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE
From E v e ry A n g l e By Laura Prior
As the city counts down to calling ‘action!’ on this year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival, QH zooms in for a close-up. Cue our three protagonists to shed some light on the fast-growing potential to tell compelling stories through film right here in Qatar. Zaina Salameh 21, from U.S.A. Cinematographer, Editor, Storyteller ‘‘I always knew I wanted to be in the creative industries and with the full support of my family, pursued my calling and applied to Northwestern University here in Qatar (NUQ). I was accepted. I was ecstatic. I knew this would give me the best possible platform to try my hand across the whole digital arts and production process. I learned how to be a one woman show and can shoot, direct, edit and even animate. Now having graduated, I have all the skills to get out there and produce beautiful, powerful films. That’s my job. To make stories as compelling as they deserve to be, and as visually beautiful as they can be. The project that I’m working on at the moment called ‘Qatar Unified Imaging Project’ which is funded by the Qatar National Research Fund see’s me take up the role as filmographer to tell the stories and document the days of old in Qatar. We are speaking to people of the older generation and have found they really want to tell their stories from the past, they actually feel the need to tell them, so that they will not be lost. It’s so important so we can learn and feel like we belong. How can we build a future unless we can remember our past? This is a powerful testimony to just one of film’s uses here in Qatar. I think Qatar has enormous potential to be on the global film-making map, I really believe the decision makers are dedicated to supporting the cinematic art and rising film community here. 44
SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE
Riad Makdessi 39, from Syria Director, Cinematographer, Storyteller
Alex Klim, 34, from Austria Director, Editor, Storyteller ‘‘I was excited about the possibilities of film and stories from a very young age. I made my first stop motion film with my toys when I was a small boy and I used to shoot little films with my friends, from as young as ten. I was always the director of course; I needed the outcome to be in my control, even then. To this day I love the possibilities of film - the different routes and journeys it can take you on. For example, here in Qatar I made a short film about one of the violinists in the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Now I am friends with many of the cast members and am recording interviews about their lives and experiences of Qatar. That’s what film does; it encourages you to feel part of something. It helps us to understand each other and bring people closer together. There is a lot of potential for the film industry to thrive here in Qatar but it needs more people to truly engage. We have created a DSLR workshop that will help encourage people who share the same passion to come together, so we are very excited about that. We need initiatives like this to build a film community, not just one or

two filmmakers working alone. For example, there is a large local photography community, which is great and most of these cameras now have video compatibility so what we are saying is why not expand your knowledge and creative scope into video – especially if you have the technology already. It’s much easier today for film-makers to get their projects off the ground and promoted, too. I think DFI and the DTFF should continue the momentum as many local and MENA region filmmakers have the opportunity to express themselves and produce great work and I am looking forward to a bright future for the industry. ’’
Riad has submitted 2 films to this year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival: 8 Billion and The Door (both produced in 2012).
‘‘I always wanted to be a director but as there was no film school in Syria, I decided to do advertising. Later on, I did a film course and shot my first film, Flu, in 2010. I like to tell stories that may make a difference and I believe in the magic of movies and the power of making a difference. I live to tell stories. Right now I am excited to be in Qatar as there is big hype surrounding the film and arts industries. There is still a long way to go, but already there is big potential. I feel like there is talent worth noticing here, whether we are talking to a local or an expat, your story is always original because of the nature of the country in which we all share our experiences Qatar. Everyone views it from a different angle, which is inviting for storytelling. I think by creating a partnership between the young and old we can do more to grow the local community. Qatar imports many things, so importing more talent will definitely add to the industry. I think DFI for example is a fantastic initiative and I would like to see it focus even more on local talent and act as a bridge between the local talent and the rest of the world. Being in a more conservative society, people may think that we are more limited in how creative we can be but I think limitation sometimes can be a blessing for creativity, sometimes. Look at Iran, with a much more conservative society, yet Iranian cinema is everywhere. They overcome their limitations. It depends on the filmmakers themselves, you have to open opportunities for you and look for a creative solution. I would like to see the local scene here grow and overcome its challenges and become a voice for filmmakers. I can’t wait to see it mature and to blossom. ‘’ 45

Family Heirlooms: Mal Lawal Exhibition Last spring, Mal Lawal invited residents of Doha to share the art collections that have made an impression and resonated with them throughout their lives. From ancient artifacts and historic collections to contemporary treasures, Qatari art, and quirky trinkets, these community-led contributions shaped an exhibition that represents the shared heritage and passions of individuals from Qatar and beyond. QH digs in to the concept of this one of-a-kind exhibition. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
PRIVATE COLLECTIONS
QATARI ARTISTS
The Mal Lawal Exhibition is about the impact every collector and artist can have, and has had, on Qatar’s journey through the past and into the future. It is an exhibition that reflects not only on the nation, but a peek into the lives of the people who make up a country.
The exceptional objects in this exhibition tell a very personal story about the people who have collected them. It is testament of their passion for artistic expression and culture and their conscious decision to preserve and maintain all forms of artistic expression. It is also important that collectors preserve the art as it will benefit future generations, offering them a way to learn from the past while highlighting how even the most ordinary objects can evolve over time to gain great value.
Collected and curated by the Qatar Museums Authority, the original works of art in this exhibition trace the development of Qatar’s arts scene, and some of its most important leaders as well as emerging talent.
One of the main collections being shared in Mal Lawal is presented by the Qatar Museum Authority featuring contemporary Qatari artists. “What is extraordinary about this exhibition is that every object tells a tale – there is a hidden narrative in everything on display. Where did these objects come from, who made them, how did they come to be in Qatar today? Similarly, the paintings tell another kind of story, one of visual expression. Why these works of art were created? What creative forces drove the development of these works that we see before us today?” Hala Al Khalifa, Education Manager, Public Art Department, Qatar Museums Authority said. 46
“The Mal Lawal exhibition for objects and pieces is a journey through history, time, and culture. It allows visitors to explore the past and the present and develop a vision of the future. This exhibition aims to influence people by bringing back their memories of the old days, and making them proud of their roots and the rich cultural diversity present here in Qatar,” Faisal Al Hitmi, CEO of Mal Lawal Project said.
“This exhibition helps us to discover the aesthetics of what has been achieved by previous generations, and to understand what is being created by present ones,” says Hala. “Mal Lawal builds a bridge between past and present, showcasing the sustainable artistic and creative heritage of people in Qatar.” ABOUT THE MAL LAWAL EXHIBITION Event: Date: Venue:

The Sounds of Fall

September’s here again and that means the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra opens its new season with a thundering crescendo on September 22. QH brings you front row centre with all the details.
Dmitris Sgouros
O
pening night at the QPO promises to be a treat for concert-goers as Doha’s most talented musicians bring Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto to the stage at Katara. If this piece sounds familiar it’s because those with keen ears will recognize it from countless cinematic soundtracks over the years. Its melodic harmonies have made it’s excerpts the most-used in movie scores over any other selection of music. Think Shrek 2 and Spider-Man 3! Taking the lead on the ivories will be special guest pianist Dmitris Sgouros. Hailing from Greece, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 12 and hasn’t looked back since, studying at the Royal Academy of Art in London and was even featured on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in his youth, receiving honours from iconic pianist Arthur Rubinstein.
48
Rubinstein is reported to have said, two months before his passing: “I thank God for keeping me alive so that I would be able to hear with my own ears Sgouros play. He’s the best pianist I have ever heard, including myself.”

Hospitality
By Laura Prior Photography by Srimani Welagedara
At the core of hospitality are people, but, the majority of hotels run to serve a bigger commercial goal: to turn a profit. At Qatar’s newest address, the K108 Hotel Doha, they’re turning that theory on its head by donating no less than 100% of all proceeds to charitable causes! QH finds out more with Mr. Tommie Liem, the GM of this petite-sized hotel with the huge heart. QH: As a charity hotel are you compromising on services and facilities? TL: To the contrary, we may be small, but we are maximizing our services and standards so that we can generate more for the greater good. We have 108 rooms which are priced at $108 U.S. dollars per night. We have a restaurant called Yum Yum where Chef Hugo Coudurier takes dining to different perspectives. He produces cuisines from fresh ingredients and our daily changing menu is reasonably priced so the customer gets maximum value. We are opening our outdoor pool, café and gym on the hotel rooftop and spa facilities very soon, too. We have valet parking, room service, laundry – everything you’d expect from a hotel, we just offer it at a more affordable rate so we can sustain the longevity of the project. QH: The concept of a charity hotel in Qatar’s bustling commercial hospitality marketplace is previously unheard of. Tell us the story behind it. TL: The hotel is a homage to the late father of its owner, H.E. Yousuf Hussein Kamal, who inherited the land where the hotel is situated. That’s where the ‘K’ comes from. The profits K108 Hotel Doha earns are given to individually-tailored charity cases, with decisions made on a case-to-case basis. It is a very unique hotel. 58
QH: What causes will the hotel help and how are the funds managed? TL: K108 is part of the Diafa Investment Company, part of Kamal International which has a charitable branch called the Kamal Foundation. They have a team who manage the funds and projects. The main focus is schools and underprivileged children in other countries. They also assess case-by-case applications to support needy people here in Qatar with things like social emergencies and medical costs.
QH: What are the benefits of working for a charitable hotel? Does it add pressure knowing that your success can impact others’ lives so significantly? TL: It adds good pressure and keeps us motivated. 80% of our staff have never worked in a hotel before but we are employing them for their selflessness, altruism and their passion to make a difference. We will teach and train them the required skills. This makes for a very organic environment and increases employee satisfaction and loyalty to our organization. We are all working towards a common goal and there is a lot of positive energy around the hotel. It is very rewarding. QH: What impact do you think K108 will have in the market? Do you think there should be more charity hotels in wealthy economies? TL: It’s still very early days but we will focus on maintaining the quality and standards. This is our greatest challenge. Looking ahead, once we are 100% established here, there may be plans to make the hotel international so we are feeling very positive about the future and potential legacy of this unique concept hotel. K108 is located in Old Al Ghanem. See their website for more info: www.k108hotel.com.

Tax Tax Or No
By Khalifa Saleh Haroon
A little can go a surprisingly long way, as I Love Qatar makes an argument as to why the country needs taxes.
T
would get a 50% reduction, forcing people to beautify Qatar to avoid paying tax. Or if your organization (or even your household), does something charitable, you get also get a tax break.
1. That should be enough to beautify the country with development of new, parks, water systems, lights, etc.
If you think about it, Qatar is the ‘perfect’ country to have tax – the taxes aren’t ‘needed’ by the government, which means that it should remain stable and any tax money they generate would be considered a ‘bonus’.
he idea of a national taxation system is something I’ve always wanted to talk about. I don’t want to be taxed like crazy (like how the U.K. does to its people for example), but maybe a slight income tax would be a good thing. Imagine if Qatar taxed citizens 1-2% of their salary for example.
2. People would demand that the country does something with their tax money, so there would be a system of accountability in place. 3. People would start consciously thinking of their financial status. The government should also provide tax breaks if you build a garden or put grass outside of your house. For example you 62

Al Shaheen – An Icon Reinvented Perched on the 12th floor, with its sweeping views over the Arabian Gulf, Al Shaheen at the Sheraton Doha Resort and Convention Hotel is one of the city’s dining icons.
F
or many years Al Shaheen has hosted celebrations, important events and other occasions. As Doha evolves into a dining destination in its own right, Al Shaheen has reinvented itself with a new menu and new attitude. This month, the restaurant that was a firm favourite for many over the 30-year history of the hotel, has shifted its focus to the ever-popular cuisine from Lebanon for its nightly dinner and Friday brunch offering. “We wanted to keep the essence of Al Shaheen, which has traditionally been a popular and much loved restaurant in this city, but give it a new, fresh twist,” says Sheraton Doha Hotel Manager Ashraf Siessy. “Lebanese cuisine is popular the world over and especially here in Qatar. We wanted to showcase fresh ingredients as well as allow the traditional flavours of Lebanon and the region to shine.”

The new menu encompasses old mezzestyle favourites including creamy hommous, tangy fattoush, crunchy tabbouli and fatayer pastries filled with meat and cheese. But the real stars of the show are the mixed grills – delivered to the table with flair and a few flames from the custom-made grills. Everything from chicken, lamb kofta, beef and of course, locally caught seafood. The new look Al Shaheen also has entertainment in the form of a band and a singer from Lebanon, playing Arabic, English and French favourites every night. With the new menu, also comes a new and sure to be popular brunch. Every Friday the brunch takes on a Mediterranean theme. Regional favourites include the grills and salads as well as activities for the children including face painting and games. The brunch costs QR 190 for the buffet or QR 270 for free-flowing house beverages.
Ashraf Siessy says Al Shaheen’s “reinvention” would bring a new generation of diners to the restaurant. “Al Shaheen has arguably the best view of any restaurant in the city, it’s the perfect platform, and we wanted to ensure the menu complimented that,” he said. “It’s an exciting new development and one that we at Sheraton Doha think will resonate with guests of all ages. It’s the perfect place to gather with friends and family” For more information or to book: Email: F&Breservations.Doha@sheraton.com Telephone: +974 4485-4071

Chowking Brings the Best of Asian Food to Al Khor With its commitment to excellence in service and quality, Chowking, an associate of Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group has opened its doors to customers in the brand new Al Khor Mall in Al Khor, 50 km north of Doha near Al Sultan Beach Resort. We can’t wait to get our taste buds around every item on the menu as this successful brand from the Philippines continues to make its mark in Qatar. Chowking offers something for everyone as its extensive menu, fast, free home delivery service and reasonable prices make it one of the most popular franchises in Doha for fresh, hot Chinese cuisine. With current locations on Al Saad St. and Salwa Road, the popularity of the brand continues to expand as customers looking for a comforting dining experience flock to menu choices that are well-known and well-loved. The fourth Chowking restaurant will open in mid- October in the Al-Salam Mall in Al Mamoura. Established in the Philippines in 1985, Chowking comes from the Chinese meaning ‘above the rest’ and it’s a motto the brand holds dear as each franchise outlet continues to provide diners with a taste of excellence. Some of the most popular menu items that continue to sell out are the iconic ‘halo halo’ dessert – a mixture of shaved ice and condensed milk mixed with a variety of fruits including coconut, mango and jackfruit, topped with ice cream and decadent leche flan. Other bestsellers include the ‘asado siopao’ a fluffy, light pastry bun filled with steaming beef or chicken – it’s quick, comforting dim sum at its best. For Chowking Business Development Manager and Acting General 76
Manager Mr. Adam Beg, the expansion of the brand to Al Khor is a sign of positive things to come. “The new stores have been in the works for the past three years,” he says. “There’s a very large market in Al Khor and we anticipate there to be even more growth in the next couple of years.” Chowking is also making waves across the rest of Doha as its customer base continues to diversify as a result of its family-friendly atmosphere and efficient service. Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal, Chairman of AHB Group hopes that in the next several years the brand will continue to move ahead with more franchises popping up across the country. Mr. Bilal says “I hope to develop more restaurant chains during the first and second quarter of 2013”. Patrons to the new location above the Lulu Hypermarket in Al Khor can look forward to five or six new specials on the menu as the restaurant celebrates its opening at this charming, family-friendly locale. Chowking also offers full-service catering for parties and corporate events and can accommodate up to 70 people for events at both its Al Saad St. and Salwa Road franchises – the perfect spot to enjoy good food and great times with family and friends.

Fresh Sashimi with Sea Salt and Pepper
and Tropical Fruits Chef Hugo Coudurier
W
e all know the adage that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. But very few restaurants well and truly practice what they preach. Yum Yum at the K108 Hotel does just that – breaking the mould when it comes to giving back. At this warm open-concept restaurant set in the heart of the city’s old Al Ghanim district, French-Canadian chef Hugo Coudurier is doing something extraordinary with the most simple and freshest of ingredients. We’re there early on a Wednesday night and the dining room fills up fast as the sun sets over the Corniche through the restaurants bank of picture windows. This place is a not-sowell-kept secret as the crowds attest. Tonight Chef Hugo has created a special tasting menu for us that consists of, well, practically the entire menu! A humble guy who would much rather be tucked behind his serving stations in the kitchen than out here in front of the cameras, Hugo explains that he often changes the menu on a regular basis, every few days or few weeks depending on his inspiration and the availability of fresh ingredients.
We start with a delectable trio of dips: hummus, moutabel, tabbouleh and a mouthwatering green pea soup with feta and basil. Each spoonful tastes garden fresh and if there’s one thing to be said about the menu at Yum Yum’s there’s no shortage of colour on the plate and palate. Next up is a foie gras on toast that’s so buttery I can feel it dissolve on my tongue. Paired with some bitter rocket leaves and a tangy honey-mustard sauce it’s delightful. Our mains are a tempting trio: sesamecrusted hammour with eggplant tahine and a date juice reduction, Beef filet mignon with pomme puree, gravy and carrots and a parmigiano and basil ravioli with a fresh tomato sauce that’s absolutely to-die-for. Each dish is simple elegance with the flavours balancing perfectly, all earthy and fresh and completely unpretentious. Dessert is also a delight as our tastebuds are treated to the most succulent chocolate soufflé, a sweet fruit tart and a tangy selection of fresh pear and lime sorbets. But even after all that, it’s still not the best part of the meal. The full price of each and every menu item goes to charity – every last cent.
You get fantastic value for your money and is all part of the unique concept of the K108 Hotel: each room costs 108 U.S. dollars a night and all proceeds go to help disadvantaged youth in Asia to support schooling and emergency healthcare needs for under-privileged workers right here in Qatar too. And the restaurant is no exception – come for the food and leave knowing that your money was well-spent. Ladles of love and helpful helpings at Yum Yum – now that’s yummy. The Fragrance Of Good Food
By Jorge Granda
Admire the artistic gastronomy of Executive Chef Jonathan Spiteri and indulge in a culinary journey of succulent dishes that will leave you wanting more. QH visits the refined restaurant Aroma at Kempinski Residences & Suites Doha to discover the secrets of its delicious food and home-made desserts.
T
he Kempinski Residences & Suites, Doha houses a stylish restaurant called Aroma and as its sensual name suggests, the top-notch resto serves provocative mouth-watering dishes that would please the most demanding of palates. Aroma captivates with an elegant atmosphere, a menu that is strategically designed to seduce diners that are eager to be impressed. The chic wooden décor and high ceilings gives you a sense of exclusivity and transforms your meal into a high-end experience. While at Aroma we were pampered with an array of different starters, soups, main courses and desserts. We start out with a Foie Gras Terrine (Chamomile jelly, saffron chutney) shaped in the form of a delicious vegetable mini tower. The Diver Scallops with Sevruga caviar on top and broccoli cream is as exquisite as we expected, while the Sesame Crusted Tuna Loin surpasses our expectations. We anticipate that more visually attractive and savoury food is on the way and we are not wrong.
80
The Pumpkin Cream is particularly tasty and the Moroccan Pea Soup with confit of duck -even though it’s a bit spicy- is equally good. Next we’re served three different main courses that include a Mediterranean-style Sea Bass fried to perfection accompanied by braised fennel, crab risotto and steamed lettuce balls. The sea bass was followed by a beautifully garnished Sous Vide of Chicken filled with smoked beef bacon, spinach with potato mash, baby carrots and savoy cabbage on the side. And last but definitely not least, Chef Spiteri amazed us with a 200 gram Sage Derby Wagyu Burger with caramelized red onions, truffle aioli, and spicy potato wedges; a simple yet scrumptious, juicy burger. It won’t take long for Aroma to be known as the restaurant that serves the most elegant and delicious burgers in town. And let’s not forget the original desserts specially conceived by the chef for Aroma. All dishes are a visual delight and it’s hard for us to even sink our forks into any of them without feeling a little sorry for destroying these beautiful creations that look more like small sculptures than plates of food. The award-winning restaurant is one of the places we recommend you visit if you are up for attractive looking food that taste as good as it looks.

heart food. More importantly, I’ll eat only good food. After all, a mediocre meal is not worth its calories. But don’t get me wrong, good food needn’t be glamorous. A wellprepared omelet could trump caviar on any given day -- while being much more nutritious. So can one go about eating well in Doha without hurting the purse strings? You betcha! Determined to prove that this city houses many culinary gems that’s kind to most budgets, I set out on a hunt for an entire week to find a feast for under 25 riyals. 82
Small Mixed Appetizer
Mutton Set Lunch
Sunday: Turkey Central The Grand Dame of Doha eateries. Before even arriving you’ll smell the aroma of chargrilled meats in the air of Al Nasser Street. The chicken here melts in your mouth and the array of appetizers is nothing less than stupendous. The sautéed aubergines, purple cabbage labneh and baba ghanoush are mandatory.
Monday: Nepali Bhanchha Ghar I’ve always been a fan of Nepalese cuisine. The curries are lighter, the spices are milder. Imagine my joy when a friend found this unassuming spot on Abdullah bin Thani Street near Bilal Studios. The thali lunch comes with mutton or chicken curry and three vegetable dishes of unlimited servings. But leave room for the momos, a Chinese style dumpling you dunk into a fiery sauce.

Karedok Tuesday: Tofu Café Yes, everything on the menu (all nine items!) contains tofu. What it lacks in variety it makes up in full-bodied, Indonesian flavours. The Bakso noodle souo with meatballs is piping hot and peppery. The true highlight is the peanut sauce that drenches the karedok, a salad of vegetables and tofu. Chicken Tacos Thursday: Chacha Mexican Grill You can fill up your tank and your tummy at the Woqod petrol station on the New Al Rayyan roundabout. Sojook Sausage Sandwich
Falafel Sandwich Wednesday: Petra Who could fault a good falafel? The golden nuggets of deliciousness pair so well with tahini and a light salad. For me, Petra with its several locations around town (one across from Al Ahli Hospital and two on B-Ring road just a block from Crazy Signal in each direction) hits the spot every time. The shish tawook sandwich is also a great alternative if you’re in a carnivorous mood. The Bill: » Falafel Sandwich – QR 4 » Two Extra Falafels – QR 1 » Tabbouleh Salad – QR 5 » Soft Drink – QR 2 > Total: QR 12
Masala Paper Roast
Friday: Bharath Looking for an alternative to Friday brunch? Then head over to Bharath (there’s one in Nasrallah Centre by Jaidah Flyover and another at Crazy Signal), an all-vegetarian restaurant. If you go before 11 a.m. the breakfast menu offers masala paper roast, a crispy, crepe made from rice and lentils stuffed with a potato curry. Did I mention it’s also twoand-a-half feet long? The Bill: » Masala Paper Roast – QR 11 » Mango Lassi – QR 10 > Total: QR 21
Saturday: Al Sultan I consider this Doha’s Deli on Al Nasser Street. What greets you at the entrance is a sandwich counter where sojook sausages, chicken with mushrooms, deep-fried shrimps, grilled meats and even liver or brain are rolled into wraps with garlic sauce. To complete the meal, try the house salad featuring a refreshing lemon dressing. You won’t leave complaining. QSL
Is Back
In Action
This month, the Qatar Stars League will kick off their new season. Be part of one of the most exciting and rapidly expanding leagues in the world. One that has opened its doors to some of football’s biggest names and given them a new home in a competition that grows from strength to strength every year. The Qatar Stars League is back for a new season and promises to bring excitement to all football fans across the country. This summer alone, 19 different nationalities have either arrived for the first time or moved to new teams within the QSL. Players hail from Morocco, Spain, Australia, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, the Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Algeria, Iraq, Burkina Faso, Peru, Holland, France, Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia and North Korea. Add all of those nationalities to the cream of Qatar’s very own home-grown talent and you get an idea of the melting pot currently bubbling away. There aren’t many bigger names in football than former Real Madrid superstar Raul. There aren’t many better endorsements than the one he gave after signing a one-year deal with Al Sadd. “It is like joining a new family,” the Spanish superstar said. For a player who openly admitted to falling out of love with football a few years ago, the excitement he feels at playing in the QSL is sure to be matched by the fans that see this global superstar for themselves. After all, this is a man who won seven ‘La Liga’ titles during his time with Real Madrid. A man who lifted the Champions League Cup three times and left the Bernabeu holding the club record for goals scored and games played. His achievements would take an entire other
article to record and analyze. When you begin to look at the calibre of players on offer in the QSL this season, football all over the region will realize there is something for everyone. Especially when one of the most talented players on show is a national hero. Not only are Lekhwiya the current champions, they have also signed one of Qatar’s favourite players. 99
SPORTS
Sebastian Soria is a QSL phenomenon. With the exception of two years in Uruguay, Soria has dedicated his career to his country to help the game blossom. His star began rising during two seasons with Al Gharafa. A goal every two games endeared him to the fans before he left as a champion and a hero. His move to Qatar SC did nothing but bring further success to Soria as a player and Qatar SC as a club, winning the Heir Apparent Cup in 2009. It was here the striker began to show how special he was; his outstanding ability to find the net attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Udinese, Getafe and Atletico Madrid all courted Soria. Where the lure of European football may have proved too much for some players, the 28-year-old put his country first and stayed. All good things must end, however and Soria did eventually leave – but only to join Lekhwiya. Champions last year, it will take something special to stop them again with this talent in their midst.
One thing is for sure, Al-Rayyan have set out their stall to try their best. The Lions want to roar this season. With Brazilian superstar Nilmar on board, who would be foolish enough to say they won’t have a chance? A thrilling talent and still only 28-years-old, Nilmar will surely light up the QSL this season. This maverick talent was a superstar in his homeland with Corinthians and a fan favourite while he was at La Liga side Villarreal. This striker was born to do one thing – entertain. An astonishing 102 goals for club and country since his professional debut in 2002 is testament to this. The four year deal he signed in July won’t last long enough for the football purists who want to enjoy Samba skills at their best. And if he really wants to be a success, all he has to do is follow the lead of fellow countryman Adriano. His debut season in the QSL was nothing short of spectacular. An incredible strike rate of 18 goals in 20 games helped El Jaish finish second in the league last year and immediately justified his decision to sign a three-year-deal. The next two years promise to be extremely exciting.

Nilmar for Al Rayyan If Brazilian superstars are what you really want to watch, Al-Gharafa have produced their very own box office attraction. Alex might not sound as exotic as other South American exports but there can be no denying the excitement he evokes once he steps on to a pitch. This 30-year-old made his name with Brazilian super club Internacional, scoring 56 goals in 168 games. He spent time in the burgeoning Russian Premier League with Spartak Moscow where he starred as captain. Life as a left back was wasted on Alex and he was quickly promoted to an attacking left-midfielder. That decision has served the clubs he’s played for well. There is no reason why that won’t continue during his time with The Cheetahs.
SPORTS
Raul for Al Sadd
Right: Tabbata for Al
Rayyan
Al-Arabi have followed the lead of their QSL rivals to sign their very own Socceroo. Matthew Spiranovic spent five years in the German Bundesliga with Nuremberg before expanding his horizons in Japan with the Urawa Red Diamonds. The 24-year-old defender has experience of Under-17s and full national squad for Australia. The decision to sign a two-year deal when he has the best years of his career ahead of him simply highlights the lure the QSL offers modern day footballers operating at the top level. Joining Alex at the Al-Gharafa Stadium is Australian powerhouse Mark Bresciano, a player who has operated at the highest level for both club and country. At the age of 32, Bresciano is hardly in the twilight of his career. His career started to flourish in Italy with Empoli where he played 80 games. Another 123 games for Parma, 107 for Palermo and a further 20 appearances for Lazio give an indication of the calibre of this player. The fact he hit double figures in the goal stakes for his first three Italian clubs further prove his pedigree. Bresciano was rewarded with a starring role for Australia at the 2006 World Cup, playing every game against Japan, Brazil and Croatia. The fans of Al-Gharafa will take this player to their hearts, knowing 100 per cent commitment is the minimum he gives.
Some players in the QSL have had a smooth transition. Contracts have ended and the path to Qatar has been hasslefree. Dioko Kaluyituka is not one of those players. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kaluyituka had to fight hard for his dream move to Qatar. A fierce dispute broke out when this powerful striker tried to leave his former club TP Mazembe. Knowing a deal with Al Ahli hung in the balance, the 25-year-old took his case all the way to FIFA before he was granted permission to sign. A threeyear-deal was duly signed as Kaluyituka scored 13 goals in 20 games. His QSL adventure continues this season after completing a loan deal with Al Kharaitiyat. Not to be out-done, Al-Arabi have lured their very own star signing to help with
their latest league campaign. Moroccan midfielder Houssine Kharja arrived in the Middle East to do nothing other than build on a reputation he carved out in the heady heights of Italy’s Serie A. The 29 year old Moroccan started his career with French giants – and Qatari owned – Paris Saint German before eventually establishing himself in Italy. An initial spell with minnows Ternana led to a move to Roma. In 2006 Genoa signed Kharja for 6.5 million euros. Karja spent 15 games on loan with Serie A giants Internazionale before moving to Roma. This summer the lure of the QSL was too big to refuse as Kharja sought a fresh and exciting challenge for his career, signing a two-year-deal with Al-Arabi. That’s exactly what this league will be to any newcomers looking for new heroes and adventures at their local clubs. New, exciting and invigorating. If you love football, you’ll love the QSL. 101

Online videos, magazines and golf instruction books can help but at the same time make deciphering the content in them difficult and the information is very general. A lesson with a PGA-qualified instructor who can analyze your ball flight will give you advice specific to your own game.” A golf set can consist of up to 14 clubs, most of which can be used to play various types of shots. While on the green, experiment with some of them instead of using only the sand wedge and pitching wedge. It’s not always necessary to play the ball high when around the green.
Perhaps a lower running chip or pitch with a lesser-lofted club like a 7,8 or 9 iron will provide more consistent results. An Olympic Adventure
Sponsored by:
By Ashlee Starratt
Amid the hustle and bustle of the London 2012 Olympic Games, there’s tranquility to be found only a few short hours from the hub city. The U.K. has long been on my bucket list. After a few failed attempts to cross the pond – including one canceled trip to spend Christmas in the Scottish Highlands (devastation!), fortune’s favour finally turned my way as I got to tick not one, but two things off that list. The chance to both tour Her Majesty’s realm and experience the fervor of the London 2012 Summer Games left an imprint that’s not soon to fade. Though traveling during the peak summer season with Gulf Air, the airline’s efficiency and quality of customer service on this long-haul flight made traveling to and from Heathrow at the height of the Olympic madness a treat. A Falcon Flyer membership will get you access to the Gulf Air Falcon Lounge in both the Bahrain and Heathrow airports away from the noise, lineups and crowds. The flight was comfortable, the food quite good and the inflight Sky Hub entertainment programming kept me from going shack-wacky when I wasn’t looking out the window.
living room it felt a bit surreal hearing on every street corner the familiar Mancunian accent I’d come to love, eating fish and chips with mushy peas for a fiver and wandering in and out of the iconic punk and record shops that have put Manchester on the map as the heart of the U.K.’s music scene. The Smiths, Joy Division and Oasis all cut their teeth on the cobbles of this city. A two and a half hour train ride from London Euston station to Manchester Picadilly, the cost of a standard-class ticket can run anywhere from 20 pounds to well over 60 pounds depending on the date of travel. With the summer peak season and the Olympics only adding to commuter craziness I found the earlier I booked my tickets the cheaper they were. Visit www.thetrainline.com to plan your excursion, pick your seats on one of the many carriers (I rode Virgin rail lines and it was very nice), and kick in an extra pound for travel insurance.
“You’re part of something much bigger and lasting.”
With the British pound significantly higher than the riyal (1 pound = 5.6 riyals at press time), travel to the U.K. can be quite costly. The good news? The cost of living, commodities, food and shopping is quite cheap so your money goes much farther. I spent my first four days in the north with friends in Manchester, poster city of Britain’s industrial age. Growing up watching Coronation St. broadcast into my Canadian

A Spanish Diversion Looking to escape the drear weather that constantly darkened the U.K. skies, my friend and I made a quick jump to Spain where the climate was hotter, the sun shone and the vibe was more relaxed despite the tension of economic upheaval plaguing the E.U. On our second night in Madrid we were caught up in a thousands-strong political protest in the Puerto del Sol plaza near our hotel. The decline of the Euro meant hard times for many, as the sea of people holding signs against

government cut-backs to social services attested. As a result reliance upon tourism in countries such as Greece and Spain has become paramount, with hotels offering rock-bottom packages and restaurants luring customers in with three-course set lunch menus for as little as 10 Euros including drinks. My share of the cost for the hotels during our stay was a mere 119 pounds for the Best Western Juan Carlos in Madrid and the Derby Hotel in Barcelona. Travel On A Budget Spain is great if you’re looking for a cheap get-away from the U.K. on a budget. Madrid is only a two hour flight away and many of the European discount airlines have tickets for as low as 30 pounds. It’s even cheaper to fly from Madrid to Barcelona than it is to take the train. Splitting costs, my total for three flights on Ryan Air, Air Europa and Monarch Airlines between the U.K. and Spain was roughly 157 pounds.
QH SENSATIONS Madrid was a beautiful exercise in the country’s history as we visited the iconic Plaza Mayor, the Palacio Real and the Museo del Prado, viewing works by Rafael and Goya’s terrifying Black Paintings. Hitting up Barcelona the vibe was one of sun-drenched modernism in this city of Gaudi as we visited his tribute to the divine laws of nature at the Sagrada Familia cathedral and took in the beauty of the Costa Brava shoreline from the heights of Parc Guell. We even did a day-trip to Figueres in the heart of the Catalonia region, a two-hour train journey from Barcelona, to visit the birth-place of the father of Surrealism and my favourite artist, Salvador Dali. The Dali Museum is a must-see for any tourist to Spain and well worth the 11 Euro admission fee. The great thing about sight-seeing in Europe is that admission to most museums and major tourist attractions is either free, cheap or by donation and Spain is no exception.
Back to the hustle and bustle of London I arrived just in time to meet up with another friend, have a walk around the capital and catch the Opening Ceremonies at a local watering hole. The city was overrun with tourists, locals, athletes and security. Tube stations were crowded and buses were jampacked as Londoners flocked to celebrate the Games. Regardless of when you visit London the most affordable way to get around is to purchase an Oyster card which allows you access to all forms of public transport. For a mere 15 pounds I was able to navigate for four days without a top-up and for Olympic ticketholders transport was free on the day of your event. Visit Transport for London at www.tfl.gov.uk to order your card online and top it up before you go. The Olympic Games: A Bird’s Eye View To explain the feeling of being a spectator at the Olympics is complex. To be united under one global flag for a common cause in celebration of sport – there’s no denying the feeling you’re part of something much bigger and lasting. We had the opportunity to watch a qualifying match for the men’s basketball where the U.S. trumped France and Spain beat out China. The stadium was packed to the rafters and yes, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant still looked like
giants even from way up high in our 20 pound nosebleed seats. We also saw the men’s rainsoaked cycling road-race as it wound its way through our neighbourhood in Southfields– just a 10-minute walk from Wimbledon where we were lucky to catch a glimpse of Serena Williams heading to practice one early morning before the women’s preliminary match. Dorset: A Day-Trip Worth Every Penny On one of my last days in London we took the train on a day-trip to Dorset to tour the Jurassic Coast, away from the push and pull of city. Replete with towering, white-washed cliffs and ancient coastlines the region is one of harsh beauty and savage nature. We made stops at Lulworth Cove and hiked to see the famous Durdle Door – an epic portal in the rock carved by millennia of erosion into an archway so immense it could guide a steam-ship through to the sea. For 35 pounds we booked the tour through Discover Dorset, www.discoverdorset.co.uk, which got us a friendly, knowledgeable tour guide, comfortable seats in a mini-bus, pick up and drop off service and some of the most breathtaking views of the entire trip. A golden end to an Olympic adventure!

Arabic Luxury At
Musheireb Boutique Hotel By Jorge Granda Photography by Jessie Palanca
Souq Waqif is an enchanting Arabic maze located in the heart of a cosmopolitan city. Its narrow paths filled with dozens of traditional shops, cafés and restaurants give visitors the feeling they’re walking through the streets of an ancient Arab civilization. Adding to the magic of this charming market we find the newly opened Musheireb Boutique Hotel. QH takes a look at this new hotspot located in old Doha.
D
oha is a great city in the making that encompasses a big sense of growth and prosperity. Traces of the old civilization are quickly vanishing as big towers and impressive skyscrapers emerge off ground that a few decades ago belonged only to camels and Bedouins. It is hard to find a traditional spot that could still embrace that truly Arabic feel in what has developed into a contemporary concrete jungle. That’s why Souq Waqif has quickly positioned itself as one of the city’s most popular locales for tourists and residents alike. Apart from its shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés, colloquial hotels have also recently become part of the mystic atmosphere of the Souq. Musheireb Boutique Hotel is one of the newest additions to the market, establishing itself as a must stop if you want to experience the authenticity of Qatar’s heritage and hospitality. Located almost right by Souq Waqif, the hotel gives easy access to enjoy everything the traditional Souq has to offer. We were invited to stay in Musheireb to find out more about this new boutique concept in the hotel industry in Qatar. Musheireb is definitely very particular and charming, with décor and rooms reflecting the traditional

decorative cues of Arabia, fused with modern elements that provide an unparalleled visual effect. The coziness of the hotel is palpable; it makes you feel you’re being hosted by a friend rather than staying in a hotel. Due to the small size of the property (constructed over three floors), the service is very personalized. All the staff members know you by name and try their best to make you feel right at home. When staying in the hotel ask for Vddhav Ghimire. He is the Food & Beverage Supervisor and one of the most pleasant and cordial employees one can find in a hotel. He will make sure all your requests are met. The Front Desk Agent Lomia Ben Ammar is also very attentive and helpful. Both of them will make your stay much more enjoyable.
and succulent. But what surprised us the most was the incredible taste and texture of the mixed grill (chicken, beef and lamb). To say it’s one of the best grills you can find in Doha is no exaggeration. Chef Jo Pienaar is from South Africa, but has been living in the Middle East for over 10 years, capturing the essence of Arabic food and cooking it to perfection. We end our feast with a delicious umm ali made by the chef, and it could have not tasted sweeter. We highly recommend staying at the new Musheireb Boutique Hotel. Soon more people will flock to the location, fascinated by its uniqueness and impeccable service. Be one of the first to discover the wonders Musheireb Boutique Hotel has tucked away inside.
GREAT ARABIC FOOD ABOUT MUSHEIREB BOUTIQUE HOTEL Musheireb only has one restaurant, but it is more than enough to please the palate of guests staying at the hotel. Al Mataam specializes in Arabic food and the setting is tranquil, comfortable and the food is up to the standards of the best restaurants in town. For appetizers we are served hummous, eggplant moutabel, beetroot moutabel, babaganoush, kebbeh and falafel. All appetizers are fresh

Remède
To The
Rescue By Ashlee Starratt Photography by Jessie Palanca
It’s pure rejuvenation as QH shows you a whole new way to wear pearls at the St. Regis’ iconic Remède Spa.
S
t. Regis is a brand associated with luxury and of the many kinds available at the St. Regis Hotel Doha, perhaps none is as overindulgent as the decadent pearl treatments at its Remède Spa. Located on the Mezzanine level the spa is modern elegance – all cool white tones, lush fabrics, wood accents and a tiled plunge pool and jacuzzi room as blue as the Santorini skies. My colleague and I are test-driving two options: the Cooling Pearl Facial and the Pearl Escape Signature Body Treatment. Cooling Pearl Facial Treatment for Women My esthetician, Tamsin, is one of the only staff members at the spa trained to perform the Pearl Facial on clients. Using an emulsion of ground pearl dust, she explains to me that pearls have immense healing qualities ideal for skin restoration, with some ancient cultures even using the fine ground powder in nourishing teas. She begins by wrapping both my hands and feet in a hot paraffin treatment and goes to work on my face, analyzing my skin and customizing my treatment specifically for its needs.
112
Because my skin has become oilier since moving to the desert, she does two extraction peel masks all over my face, interspersed with deep-tissue moisturizing with the pearl cream and followed by a cooling, tingling oxygen mask to clean out impurities and create an anaerobic environment on the skin so bacteria can’t thrive. After the 90-minute treatment my skin feels dewy and rejuvenated, as though all my pores have gone through a badlyneeded detox. Wrapped in a comfy robe I’m guided to the tranquil post-treatment room to relax on a chaise and enjoy a steaming cup of fresh mint tea. Pearl Escape Signature Body Treatment for Men My colleague’s Pearl Escape Signature Body Treatment was equally refreshing as a body scrub and exfoliation with the pearl emulsion prepares the skin for a deeppenetrating mineral wrap. The purpose of the wrap is to detoxify the skin’s top layers and revitalize its texture and appearance. After a quick, invigorating shower the treatment is topped off by a moisturizing body wrap and scalp treatment that leaves you feeling like butter.
Without a doubt, as far as spas go the Remède sets the bar high in a city overrun with spots catering to beauty and wellness. At QR 1700 for a 90-minute session the treatments we had were not inexpensive, but if it’s luxury you’re looking for and are willing to pay the extra price for the best of the best, go for it – these sumptuous pearl treatments will certainly leave you shining like one.

The Dish on Qatar: Healthcare Edition
When travelling anywhere, whether for a short stay or a full-on roots-down move, it’s crucial to know where to get healthcare should you or a family member need it. QH checks the pulse on all things healthcare here in Qatar so you can keep on it!
118
General Info – Public & Private:
Insurance Or No Insurance?
Qatar’s public healthcare is regulated by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) which oversees quality, standards and performance of healthcare providers across the country. Qatar has a public health service that provides free or highly subsidized healthcare whether you’re a national, expatriate or a tourist. Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is the premier non-profit healthcare provider here established by the government. HMC manages four highly-specialized hospitals and a healthcare centre: Hamad General Hospital, Rumailah Hospital, Women’s Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital and the Primary Health Care Centres. These hospitals are sophisticated by the standards of the region. There are also private hospitals across the country too. Top of the list include Al-Ahli Hospital, Doha Clinic, Al-Emadi Hospital, The American Hospital, Apollo Clinic, Future Medical Center, Future Dental Center, Tadawi Medical and the jewel in the country’s healthcare crown the state of the art Sidra Hospital.
Although Qatar does have this public health service, as an expatriate or tourist, it’s likely that you will have to pay some of your medical costs and it’s the smart option - in case of any unexpected specialized services or operations, to be covered by international medical insurance. Payment for treatment/medication can be required up front then be re-claimed. Be sure to check the terms of your policy before travel to know where you stand on this. When working in Qatar some companies may provide you and any spouses with free or subisidized insurance - again check with your employer first on your entitlement. Be sure to carry your medical/insurance card around with you with valid I.D. at all times and if you have to re-claim be prepared to provide the paperwork! • For a full list of hospital and clinic numbers visit our phone directory on page 124.

Those who are not used to searing summer heat can be struck by pesky sunstroke and sunburn as temperatures often reach 50°C! Respiratory problems can arise due to the dust and sand in the air and dehydration is also something to be aware of so keep yourself protected from the sun’s harmful rays, stay inside when dust levels are high and always have your water on hand! Qatar also has some of the highest rates in the world for obesity and diabetes so keep active while staying here to help prevent the onset or worsening of such conditions.
Hamad Medical Corporation’s Rumailah Hospital has ophthalmology and dentistry departments where treatment is available via referral from the multiple private eye and dental care clinics nationwide. Some clinics will accept health insurance but be vigilant when cross-checking both your policy terms and the requirements of the practice too!
Ambulances are available nationwide and there is a quick average response time to emergency calls. Hamad also has a 24/7 public accident and emergency department on their main site. In an emergency dial: 999 Pharmacy / Chemist & Prescriptions: There are countless pharmacies in Qatar, many with late opening hours.
