ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR RAMADAN IS INSIDE THIS MAGAZINE... (You’re welcome.)

Dear friends, Ramadan Kareem! Cover Conceptualized by Srimani Welagedara

This year Ramadan has embraced us earlier, with that in mind the QH team has been busy putting together an extensive guide for the Holy Month. With that being said, we are sharing educational articles to inform our readers on the traditions, customs and the festivities happening this month.

ABOUT US

Our guide brings you the best of Doha’s Ramadan tents, where to head for Iftar and Suhoor, and the Dos and Don’ts of observing this religious month.

Chairman Mr.Ahmed Hassan Bilal Editor-in-Chief Mr. Nasser Ahmed Hassan Bilal

But not only that, between the pages of May edition, you will find a myriad of other informative and intriguing articles such as our detailed review on Apple’s new ipad by our resident contributor. Also, we share tips on how to stay positive during difficult times, and on how to stay body active by getting your skates on.

Managing Editor Harriet Gyamfuah

And to help you not over-indulge during Iftar and Suhoors, why not consider a healthier approach by trying Doha’s latest eatery venue, The Bowl – the first ever bowl concept to be introduced in Doha.

Executive Editor Sofia Graniello

Therefore, it leaves me to say this Ramadan and always, from myself and QH team are sincerest wishes for positivity and wellbeing during this Holy Month. A joyous Ramadan Kareem to you and your loved ones.

FILM IN FOCUS

RYAN REYNOLDS RETURNS FOR RAUNCHY, VIOLENT SUPERHERO SEQUEL

I

BASED ON THE MARVEL COMIC CHARACTER, THIS SUPERHERO FILM IS THE FOLLOW UP TO DEADPOOL – AND WE ARE DEAD KEEN TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

f you’ve seen the trailer for Deadpool 2 you will have already been drawn in to the rough grey decaying streets, filled with litter and graffiti, creating an atmosphere of doom. Deadpool’s appearance would be enough to frighten even the least sensitive amongst us but there is much more menacing content than his scarred and scary face. He was transformed into this scary figure by an evil scientist and now continues to be an anti-hero. Anti-hero because he is not bad enough to be a villain but not good enough to be a hero. So this comic tale is not simply a tale of triumph over evil – it’s more complicated than that! Deadpool was a mercenary – someone who is paid a killing for killing – but it really depends upon the circumstances involved whether that makes him brave or ruthless or both. But here he is being a hero – he forms the team X force to protect a young

mutant from Cable, a time travelling soldier and definitely a villain who is also a mutant. And it’s not just Cable’s physical build that gives him strength – it’s also his ability to read minds. So his body and mind combined give him enormous powers. Not only is Cable a terrifying sight with his enormous body, but also he has a metal arm, which he can rely on to carry out any evil deeds. And he’s not the only bad guy - there are a plenty more! Along with other mutants, each one with their own unique supernatural power, there are a whole cast of characters to add even more drama. There is Domino, with the ability to manipulate luck; Warhead who has the power to detonate atomic bursts from her body; Black Tom Cassidy who can manipulate energy through plants and Colossus who can transform his entire body into organic steel. Deadpool (or non mutant name Wade

Wilson) is played by Ryan Reynolds (Mississippi Grind, Woman in Gold) and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Men in Black 3) is Cable – or Nathan Summers. Deadpool’s fiancée, Vanessa, is played by Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Serenity) and their relationship adds another dimension - and this film will entertain as well as keep you gripped to the scary moments. Deadpool has the ability for wise cracking and it’s officially a superhero comedy film – a sequel to the Deadpool and eleventh in the X-Men film series. And yes! There will be a Deadpool 3 – it’s already being planned. Even if you never imagined that American superhero films would be your choice of entertainment, watch Deadpool 2 and you will find yourself drawn in to this fantastical world of comedy and drama. And if you are already a fan of this genre of film – you can escape into this other world of endless entertainment.

Director: David Leitch | Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy | Cast: Morena Baccarin, Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynolds Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar 17th May | QH Fun Fact: Ryan Reynolds’ character (Deadpool) briefly mentions the movie “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”. Ryan’s real-life wife, Blake Lively, starred in that movie.

T

he face of fashion has gone through tremendous change over the past few years. Suddenly, inclusivity is all the rage. Suddenly, we’re seeing women we can relate to and see our common flaws in. The days where the socially constructed image of perfection would be spread across the pages of every fashion magazine are over. Today, it’s all about diversity in action. But the stage is ever-changing and evolving. Diversity and inclusivity no longer only means seeing different body shapes. It’s now about seeing different races, and it’s about seeing different cultures represented. Enter, Halima Aden. The Somalian beauty took the fashion world by storm when she hit the runway and covers of magazines in a display of religion that the world has grown accustomed to growing upon: The hijab. Halima Aden was born Somalian in a UN refugee camp. The model and her

family were finally allowed to move to St. Louis when she was only 7. Her beauty did not go amiss. She was quick to start accepting homecoming queen titles and entering beauty pageants. Halima was the first beauty pageant contestant in the U.S. to wear Hijab. Photos of her rocking a burkini for the swimsuit segment shocked people worldwide.

first Hijabi model to appear on the cover of magazines like Vogue, Halima has securely revolutionized the runway. Also, representing an entire religious group, the Somalian beauty will be remembered long after she’s gone.

Now, a supermodel in her own right, Halima takes to the runway in her hijab while insisting on dressing accordingly to Islam. While the star makes the statement look effortless and easy, she has admitted that her strict dress code and insisting on wearing the hijab has lost her a number of jobs. There were people she was dying to work with, but at the end of the day this change had to be made and it had to start with her saying no. Halima has single-handedly made it her mission to bring voice to an entirely unrepresented communities; being the

You have a new film coming out, how did you come up with the concept, and can you share the name of the film?

I remember I was so inspired to write right after a Master class with my favourite directors, Asghar Farhadi, in the last years of Qumra. I left that Master class feeling like I had something to say about women and inequality, and I did, I turned it into a script and filmed it a year later. It’s called Gubgub, which means crab. The film is about a girl, after getting her first catch of the day while crab hunting with her father and brother, bright-eyed Jawaher shows it to her father. He dismisses her, but goes on to praise her brother’s catch. Determined to win her father’s approval, Jawaher shrugs off his hurtful reaction and sets out to catch ten crabs. On her quest, she finds herself battling for a catch with Nawaf, a boy who shares her goal.

Being a female filmmaker, how difficult was it to break into such industry in Qatar?

The industry in Qatar isn’t so big, so ‘breaking through’ isn’t so hard - even though I still feel like I didn’t actually break through. I’m thankful for companies that we have here like The Film House and Doha Film Institute, who put effort into helping female filmmakers do what they love. I would say though, being a female filmmaker has been a little difficult in terms of the culture and society we have in Qatar, but nothing can

stop you if you have the will, the ambition and the dream to push through it all.

What was the creative process behind the film, and how long did it take you to actually film it? It took some time to develop the script – around a year. I just kept reading and writing, as well as having professionals read it and give feedback; I love hearing people’s feedback, you can’t stop learning. I worked really closely with my Producer and Cinematographer in order to envision the film, such as location scouting, storyboarding, etc. It took around a month, and the actual filming took around three days.

What were some challenges you had to overcome throughout this process?

The hardest part was to stop thinking like a producer. Producing is and has always benn my passion before directing Gubgub, and it was really hard to let go of all the logistics and just direct! My mind would just keep bouncing back to producing. Thankfully, I had the best producer ever, Justin Kramer, so I never really had to worry. Also, filming in the sea is not easy, water tides change literally in a minute, next thing you know you’re stuck on an island and need to swim back!

How did you get into filmmaking?

I got into Northwestern University back in 2015. I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I took one production class and I

was hooked. During my freshmen year, my professor would constantly call me ‘The Producer,’ and I had no idea what that meant. Fast forward three years, she was right.

If you could have a sit down with anyone in the film industry, who would it be with and why?

Samira Makhmalbaf, she directed one of my favourite movies of all time, At Five in the Afternoon. I just want to know more about her, where she gets her inspiration and her style of filming.

When creating this project, who was your biggest inspiration?

It was my 12-year-old niece, Deema. I wanted to write a story to empower her and girls her age.

If you could swap lives for a day with someone, who would it be and why? Honestly, my cat Toby.

What is your favourite bit about filmmaking?

Working with the crew. Filmmaking is a lot of work but honestly, working with a great team makes the work feel seamless.

Where can we catch your new project? Not sure yet. We are still in the early stages of post-production and it won’t be done for another couple of months. Hoping it will circle a few festivals around the world. I will definitely keep you guys posted!

2018’s iPad: Affordable yet Formidable TECH COLUMNIST, HASSAN SARAYA, DELVES ON APPLE’S 2018 IPAD. FIND OUT IF IT’S WORTH YOUR BUCK OR NOT.

W

hen we think of Apple, we immediately jump to the thought: Empty your pockets, it’s going to be expensive, especially when it comes to tablets. However, Apple has come up with a system that allows the flourishing brand to recycle parts of products they’ve previously introduced to the market, and turn them into brand-new shiny ones. Last year, Apple introduced a low budget 9.7-inch iPad rocking an A9 chip that was previously used on the iPhone 6S & 6S plus, with a price starting from $329. This year, Apple introduced the new 2018 low budget iPad with a focus on education, powering new internals, and supporting a feature from their iPad Pro series: The Apple Pencil. On the surface, you will not encounter much of a difference between the $648 iPad Pro released in 2017, and the new 2018 low budget model, other than certain luxuries such as thinner bezels & less thickness.

The 2018 iPad powers an A10 fusion chip “found previously on iPhone 7 & 7 Plus” with a 2 GB ram, 1.8 GHZ processor and a 10-hour battery life, which makes it powerful enough for multitasking, video editing and intensive graphic games. This iPad supports the $99 Apple Pencil used for illustrations, 3D Design and stylus-like tasks. While the camera on the 2018 iPad does not shoot in 4K, now, you’ll be able to edit in 4K using iMovie. And if you’re a fan of the new colour gold on the iPhone 8 series – you’re in luck – you can now purchase the new iPad with the brandnew gold finish. And if perhaps your mind is not made up yet, the below summary might help breakdown your needs for this new product. Business: This iPad supports split screen multi tasking, which will allow you to work on a presentation while looking up material online. Also, don’t forget with the Apple Pencil support you’ll be able to sign documents on the go.

Gaming: Apple promises a 10-hour battery life on a single charge, in addition to a 9.7-inch screen retina display with 2048 by 1536 pixel resolution at 264 ppi, which makes a decent performance for high intensive graphic games. And with the use of Apple Pencil, colouring never felt so real on a touch screen. Education: The price of this iPad makes it accessible for students of all ages (from $329 for the wifi model; $459 for the cellular model). Apple made a handy product with built-in apps such as Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie and Garage band. School assignments have never been easier! Let’s make it clear: The 2018 low budget iPad is all about higher than average performance with a budget. If you are likely to upgrade your electronic devices to the most recent rather than wait it out, then this iPad is not for you.

Selma Benomar MOROCCAN FASHION DESIGNER SELMA IS THE CREATIVE SOUL BEHIND LUXURIOUS KAFTAN BRAND, SELMA BENOMAR. THE INSPIRING DESIGNER FOCUSES ON CREATING UNIQUE PIECES THAT EVOKE MOROCCAN’S BEAUTY AND TRADITION, WITH A YET, WHIMSICAL APPROACH. RICH IN COLOURS AND REFINES FABRICS, THE DESIGNER IS BACK THIS RAMADAN WITH A KAFTAN COLLECTION, AND QH GETS THE LATEST SCOOP.

Ramadan is a special time especially in the region. The beauty of the culture and rich traditions is even more visible. I have always thought of the kaftan as attire for every woman, a piece that they can cherish and also be comfortable and feminine in. I remember as a little girl, watching an elder family member stitching together a beautiful piece. I was fascinated with the design process right there. And I know there are many little girls out there who look up to their mums every time they dress up, it is such a special feeling and connection between two people and let alone a mum and daughter.

As for the collection’s patterns and colours, what was the inspiration behind it?

This collection also has a ready-towear pieces and I was determined to bring kaftans in to everyday wear. Not many may know but the Djellabas are loose and comfortable forms of kaftan that are widespread back in Morocco. This paved way inspiring me for the ready to wear element. I selected my fabrics and colours based on this attire and what colours would suit the style. In general, I am inspired by nature around me. I have been told that I have an unusual sense of colour combination, and I am so glad that shows! You can find the most beautiful and unusual colour combinations, so I always get attracted to this natural creativity and beauty around us. I will often travel to South East Asia to get inspired from its beautiful nature.

In three words, describe your Ramadan’s collection 2018:

Splendor, graceful and traditionally rich.

How did you get into the fashion industry?

I was travelling to Dubai from France and I had no plans of getting into kaftan designing. I was working in Quality Management back in Paris and all I wanted was some change. When I came to the region, there wasn’t really any luxury brand for Moroccan kaftans, so it was my goal to have a trusted luxury kaftan brand available to people here. In fact, the way they were presented here triggered me to immediately start doing something to

“Kaftan is a traditional outfit but can be worn at any time and in any way by any one! It brings out the feminine side of any woman while keeping the comfort in check.”

FASHION TALK

With your new Ramadan collection inspired by a mother-daughter relationship, what brought you to use that as an inspiration?

change the image of this muchloved attire.

What kind of woman do you design for?

Kaftan is a traditional outfit but can be worn at any time and in any way by any one! It brings out the feminine side of any woman while keeping the comfort in check. Lot of my Arab clients get the Kaftans to attend weddings and events, but kaftans can also be worn at any other time. Lightweight with light fabrics and less embroidered pieces can also be fashioned at various gatherings. I love the designing part of my work, to see fabrics come alive as pieces is truly satisfying. I don’t think there is major difference in customer preference, although I know my western audience likes simplistic looks and that’s what Selma Benomar’s code is. We take pride in our kaftan, which are designed intricately. Even though a kaftan is usually luxurious and heavy, our kaftans are simplistic yet rich.

And, if you could have a sit down with your favourite designer, who would it be and what would you ask?

There are a lot of international designers that I follow and admire. I really like Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko; I feel like something she does is similar to my work. I am also inspired by my country, Morocco’s rich heritage just as she is inspired by her country Russia. I also love the work of famous designer Elie SAAB. And I am proud of the fact that he is not only well known in the Arab world, but also internationally. I love his previous fall winter collection where I noticed some work was inspired by Moroccan kaftans.

important for me since I design pieces that I would wear myself. I cannot design something that I would never wear, so my style influences my designs a lot. I love simplicity in general; I don’t like complicated and heavy outfits and this shows in my designs too.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion to me is something that makes you feel more of you. It’s about what brings confidence. As mentioned above my own style is simple, very minimalistic with hints of sophistication, reflecting who I am. Fashion also changes frequently but style remains. Fashion is all about how you perceive and execute your style and I think that´s the beauty of it.

Selma, how would you describe your own personal style?

My personal style is very simple yet elegant. Of course, this is very Find her designs: www.selmabenomar.com

W

e all know weekends are packed with brunches and happy memories, and at Sharq Village & Spa they know how to continue with the weekend fiesta. QH had the difficult task (not really), to try their fabulous SharqTastic Saturday Brunch, which starts from 12.30pm until 4pm. The Saturday brunch is set to entertain your lunch break with your family, friends or your better half and take your palate to the next level. The lively brunch takes place at Al Liwan restaurant at the hotel’s ground floor. The setting of the brunch is spacious, modern and with a twist of Arabic feel to it. As we entered we were taken to our seats and we were eager to eat away, and so we kicked our eatery adventure with their delicious cold Arabic mezze. (Can’t go wrong with that!) We first opted for their hummus, fattoush, tabouleh and other great available options that didn’t disappoint one bit. As our afternoon progressed the venue seemed to offer great ambience with their live entertainment, but if perhaps you’re visiting with kids, the hotel also offers outdoors pools if you wish to have a splash of excitement with the little ones. And as we kept tasting all the goodness there was to try from their appetizer range, we were eager to give main course a whirl. We opted for a salmon in white sauce, steamed vegetables that were nice and crunchy, and their selection of eggplant with yogurt. Truly, there is a myriad of options for those who are vegetarians, pescetarians, and for the meaty crowd, too. Also, there is a vast selection of the finest cheese and crackers for those who wish to end the afternoon on a savoury note. But, hold on, there is also a dessert cart for those who wish to satisfy their sweet cravings. We ended our afternoon with a chocolate cake and a cappuccino – the perfect way to end our relaxing Saturday brunch.

How does it feel to be Head Chef in the highest restaurant in Doha?

Being the highest restaurant is symbolic – it is high in taste factor, high in service provided, simply all round high end in everything! I have travelled all over the World, developing my skills and now I can meet the highest demands and the highest targets.

Zengo specializes in South East Asian cuisine – does any one country have a particularly strong influence?

Zengo has it’s roots within the South East Asian cuisine; taking the best from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. The whole concept of our menu takes such inspiration and formulates it with advanced techniques like that of Cryo cooking, sous vide, infusions, reversed spherification, fermentation and many more into a better and innovative dishes with non-traditional design emphasizing the creativity of the team.

How did you develop your passion for South East Asian cuisine?

if I must choose one it would be the tenderloin which is a fusion of European and South East Asian cuisine. This creation has elevated the flavor from a movie to a 3D movie!

When someone comes to Zengo for the first time, which dish would you recommend to try?

Tenderloin – but if you are more fish lover than meat it would have to be the Thai seafood dish. It comes with three contrasting and delicious dressings – tomato and chilli, a dressing of fresh herbs and a mango dressing which has a citrus flavour. This was created by separating out the different ingredients of one dressing – to make three – so that all flavours can be tasted.

Who or what inspired you to become a chef ?

I was at school when I met an Italian chef and when I began to work in his kitchen I just knew it was the place for me. I learned new things every single day which is what I love to do. I love a challenge and I liked the pressure – I saw it as a game. By the age of 19 I was working for a living.

What do you most enjoy eating yourself: spicy hot or mild – or something in between?

I believe that spiciness is not actually a flavour; if a dish is too hot you cannot appreciate the flavours – you just eat and cry which I did not understand before. But now I know that part of my job is to enjoy spicy food and I have learned to appreciate it.

You also have artfully presented dishes – how important is the artistic presentation of cuisine?

Design is part of my work – it’s essential to keep the artistic approach in the frame. Developing culinary creations is a creative process; it’s essential to have a knowledge and understanding of how flavours combine but it’s also just as important to make the presentations beautiful.

Located in one of Qatar’s most renowned hotels, Doha Marriott Hotel, you can find a tucked away spa retreat that promises to keep your mind and body at ease from hectic shcedules. The Spa is located next to the pool facilities offering a truly underrated pampering experience that is guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. And if that wasn’t alluring enough, The Spa also offers a wide range of body and facial treatments as well as massages and nail treatments – it even offers Fantasy Tan! We had to give this sanctuary a try, one we wish we’d definitely visit sooner.

For The Body…

Traditional Moroccan Hammams are definitely popular in Doha and its spas, well luckily, The Spa offers a unique experience if you’re looking to jump into this old traditional spa journey. The treatment begins with an application of the traditional Moroccan soap, which heavenly soaks into your skin in a steam room. The soap is followed by an intense scrub to reveal a fresh and smoother

For The Face...

And if you wish to experience a one-ofa-kind facial treatment, then this spa has you covered with exceptional treatments that blew us away with its eye for detail by the wonderful esthetitian that clearly knew what she was doing. We tried out their new White Lumination Facial that promises clearer and brighter skin with a notorious radiance boost. The facial came with a full extraction, multiple face masks and even a rubber peel-off mask that’s so popular on Instagram.

For The Nails…

Is it even a true pamper day if you don’t get a mani/pedi? Yeah, we thought so, too. The relaxing facilities come with a room dedicated to nail treatments and relaxing massage chairs for your pedicure. Our nails were left buffed and flawlessly shaped. Definitely we’re going to be coming back for our regular mani/ pedis.

We found that The Spa is a hidden gem that everyone needs to try out, from the friendly and accommodating staff to their amazing technique within every single treatment we tried- it’s simply a must try.

Staying Positive and Focused During Rough Times LIFE COACH MISS SHEFA, SHARES TIPS ON HOW TO STAY CALM IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS.

60

N

o matter who we are or what amazing accomplishments we have achieved, at some point along our journey we all face trials and adversities. One of the things I have learned over the last few years is to work consciously to improve my outlook on life – regardless of its grueling obstacles. With experience and techniques, I have developed an attitude that over time has become significantly consistent, one I can now look at the world with a positive set of eyes. But more importantly, I have trained myself on how to stay positive and productive during tough times, too. One of the techniques I constantly practice for a healthier outlook on life, is to ask myself meaningful questions such as:

What is one positive outcome out of this situation? What opportunity am I gaining out of it? During a tough season, instead of asking: Why is this happening to me? I switch the question around to: What is this suppose to teach me? I have worked hard to cultivate a positive environment for myself, which has become a game-changer. I make active choices with whom I spend my time with as these people are key influences on my daily actions. With that said, to stay positive it is fundamental to have motivating influences in your life that will support and up-lift you and not drag you down. These positive people I call energizers and I do my very best to stay away from the drainers. When stressful times rise, it’s very easy to lose perspective and create problems bigger than what they really are. Keep in mind when getting too overwhelmed

to simply breath. And when having negative and destructive thoughts, take a step back to analyze the situation. Practice breathing, inhale and exhale and expand your lungs fully. Focus on your breathing technique for a minute or two; this will calm your body and mind.

Refocus and ask yourself: Will this matter in five years, or even five weeks?

Also, exercising regularly, eating and sleeping on a productive level helps to keep a positive mind and body. It may sound obvious to you, but keeping up with a healthy routine is also key to a positive lifestyle. Be mindful of basic habits that in the end, have a massive impact on your daily decisions. Start your day with things that will encourage and boost your energy, as this, will dictate your energy for the next 24hrs. Perhaps, start your days by having an uplifting conversation with a family, or friend; listen to an inspiring YouTube video over breakfast, or on your way to work. I write positive post-it notes to myself, which I stick on the wall and read every morning before I leave home. Furthermore, stay present in the moment as you mindfully move throughout your day. This will only make it easier to tap into positive emotions, even if we are experiencing chaos. When you get lost in the past or future, like so many of us often do, we can get caught up and raveled with anxiety. Failures and mistakes from the past being replayed over and over in your mind, can also cause a negative impact and wear us down. And remember, being in touch with your emotions is a great way to be aware and act accordingly.

recently went for a run on the beautiful Doha Corniche as I usually do at least once a week in winter. It was probably one of the last few 5km runs I will embark in before it gets too hot. Whilst running it’s not uncommon to come across a child rollerskating with his watchful parents close by. But when I spotted a group of adults in perfect formation whizzing past me as I reached the end of my run, I was most intrigued. I came to discover that this group of athletes were training for the GS Rollerskating Championship 2018 edition, which took place on the 27th April at Aspire Dome. This was the second edition of the championship and it was wonderful to see how the support for the sport has grown in Doha. The athletes really pushed themselves to the limit. One of the most grueling ways in which these athletes put their bodies to the test during training is with a weekly 23km skate from the old airport to Hamad International Airport. The skaters use the cycling track, which is a safer route, and a really good track for skating. During the glorious winter months, they skate this route on Friday

62

ACTIVE BODY mornings because the weather is perfect. In the summer, they adjust to the early evenings when it’s cooler and more pleasant. At a distance, skating just looks like a whole lot of fun, but in addition to the entertaining nature of the sport and pass time, it is a great workout. It assists with overall agility, coordination as well as balance whilst strengthening the heart and improving endurance. Gery and EmanAmnah, the founders of this roller skating group pride themselves in teaching new generations of skaters the skills they themselves have perfected over the years. Starting from 3 years old or as soon as the child has learned the art of balancing on their feet, they can be taught to skate. Lessons for the youngsters take place on Friday afternoon in the safe and skater-friendly Hotel Park on the Doha Corniche. Head coach Gery started skating when he was three years old and his parents brought home his first pair of skating shoes. When he grew a little older, he started skating as a pastime with his friends and enjoyed it so much that he took on a coach who discovered his potential and started teaching him different techniques and tricks to use in competitions. With years of hard, Gery, eventually became the two-time roller skating champion of Cameroon in 2010 & 2011. For him skating is not just a sport, it’s a way of life. And he can’t think of a better way to pass on his legacy, than teaching the youth and even adults who are willing to learn, everything he knows about the world of skating.

HOW TO EAT 5 FRUITS & VEGGIES EACH DAY LAURA BOFINGER SHARES TIPS AND TRICKS ON HOW TO PACK FRUITS AND VEGGIES FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE. “Eat your fruits and vegetables.” We’ve heard it all of our lives. If only it were so simple.

Cnn.com

Our bodies crave fruits and vegetables more than just about any other food because we tend to get far fewer of them than we need. We often think we’d survive just fine on 2-3 servings a day – or less. But the Centers for Disease

64

Control and Prevention and the USDA both recommend at least 5 servings per day! What you’re missing could be the difference between just surviving and all out thriving. With just a little thought and a tiny bit of effort in snack preparation, you can make these nutritious foods more convenient and accessible.

Tricks

Add fruit to your cereal, oatmeal, waffles or pancakes at breakfast.

Create your own yogurt flavors with plain yogurt and different combinations of fresh fruit.

Snack on raw vegetables or fruits instead of chips or pretzels. Keep sugar snap peas, raisins or carrot sticks in your car, your office or your backpack.

Use chunky salsa instead of thick, creamy snack dips.

Drink 100% juice instead of addictive coffee, tea, or soda.

Going out to lunch? Take a trip to the grocery salad bar. Use lots of dark green leaves and other vegetables instead of piling on all of the extras like eggs and cheese.

Add frozen veggies to any pasta dish. It’s an easy way to get in another serving of the good stuff.

Keep fruits and vegetables in line of sight. Grapes, oranges, bananas, and apples make a colorful bowl arrangement on the table. If you see them, you will eat them.

Dried fruit is just as portable as potato chips – and less messy. It tastes especially good when added to basic trail mix.

When cooking vegetables, makes 2-3 times more than you need and immediately store the extra away for tomorrow. It’ll save you time later on.

Add your own beans and vegetables (tomatoes, spinach, peppers, cabbage) to canned and quick-serve soups.

If you must have pizza, load on extra veggies and pineapple instead of fatty meats and extra cheese.

Try berries, melons or dates for a naturally sweet dessert rather than the usual candy bar, cookie, or ice cream sandwich.

Frozen fruit and veggies are nearly as healthy as the fresh stuff, and only take minutes to prepare.

Tips and

: g equals in v r e s One

1 medium piece of fruit

1/2 cup fruit (raw, canned, or frozen)

1/2 cup cooked vegetables (canned or frozen)

Combine fruit with your main meal courses. Raisins, apples and tangerine slices add sweet, crunchy variety to a salad. Pineapple is great with fish, and orange slices are perfect with chicken. Besides being packed full of nutrients, fruits and vegetables can also be quite filling. They may even ward off any empty calorie snacking that might follow! Don’t be discouraged by the recommended 5 servings a day. The guide on the right shows that one serving is less than what you might think.

1 cup raw vegetables

1/4 cup dried fruit

1/2 cup cooked peas or beans

Going Green with Eco-Entrepreneur

Ghanim Al Sulaiti KIM WYATT SITS DOWN WITH GHANIM AL SULAITI A QATARI ENTREPRENEUR WHO IS TAKING THE BUSINESS INDUSTRY BY STORM. THE ECO-FRIENDLY ENTREPRENEUR SHARES AN INSIGHT ON HIS BUSINESS AND MUCH MORE. Vibe

G

hanim Al Sulaiti is a man with a mission. At only 26 years old, the Qatari tunnel engineer is trailblazing an innovative business niche in Qatar with his increasing portfolio of environmentally and socially responsible companies. Driven by his passion for conservation, sustainability and community, the co-founder of Qatar’s first vegan café, Evergreen Organics, has also recently introduced the first Qatari owned eco-friendly beauty homeware range, Botany and several other pioneering businesses. With other exciting local and global projects on the horizon, this innovative ecoentrepreneur is redefining Qatar’s business landscape and inspiring a new, younger generation to ‘go green.’

How would you describe yourself ? Green business leader? Eco-warrior?

I would describe myself as a conscious living being that wants to create change in my community – a person with passion and love for the environment. I’m very eager to instigate change by providing alternatives and innovative, sustainable

66

solutions. My aim is to help the community thrive on this planet without affecting more creatures and the environment.

How did you become interested in the eco-friendly business sector?

I’ve always been very interested in the impact that humans have on the environment and conscious of health and wellbeing. Once I became more aware of what was going into my body, I became interested in creating solutions and ideas. These have transformed into business concepts because I want to share my ideas with the community and offer sustainable, eco-friendly options to the consumer. My main interest has come from personal experience in changing my own lifestyle. It’s a passion I want to share with people.

Where did your passion for the environment come from?

I’ve always had a passion for nature and well-being. Growing up, I had a strong connection with the earth and grew plants and trees. More recently, my interest developed when I started reading about veganism and plant-based diets. I became more

What does your future hold?

I’m always passionate about creating new concepts and ideas. I’m very eager to expand my business across the globe to inspire more people to adapt to a healthy, plant-based lifestyle. Recently I’ve opened a new factory, Papercut, which produces eco-friendly packaging and launched Evergreen Kitchen which provides vegan, wholefood products to supermarkets in Qatar. I want to give back to my community – I’m in the process of creating a new investment company which helps other businesses develop eco-friendly ideas. I’m extremely excited in moving to the next step and to see what the future holds for me.

conscious of the impact that plants have in our lives and didn’t realise the importance until I started eating a plant-based diet. I saw the positive change in my body and health. Now with modern technology it’s more important than ever that we keep a connection to the earth. It’s the way we’re supposed to live life. My health and wellness journey is a continuous path - I’m always learning and eager to explore new concepts

Do you see a growing trend for eco-friendly businesses in Qatar?

I think it’s the future. We’re seeing the negative impact that our choices are having on the environment. We’re becoming smarter and more conscious about environmental issues so I’m sure that this business niche will expand in Qatar. The Qatar National Vision 2030 promotes sustainability and environmental responsibility. I always encourage new businesses to think of their impact on the environment and society.

What do you think of Qatar’s current attitude towards environmental issues?

Tell us about your newest eco-friendly business - Botany. Why did you start this beauty and homeware brand?

I’ve always had a passion for botanical ingredients and love understanding their importance in our lives. Plants can heal the body and environment. I’m always excited to read more and include plants in my lifestyle and diet. Becoming a vegan made me aware of the products I use on my skin and I wanted to provide an alternative product that is 100% organic, ethically sourced using recycled glass and packaging. Also, every time you purchase a Botany product we donate 10% to my Good Vibe Foundation which provides healthy, vegan meals to underprivileged children in Cambodia.

You’ve expanded your business into the global market. Describe the concept behind Vibe Asia.

I was always travelling to Asia as part of my journey to research plant-based lifestyles around the world. Asia has been a huge inspiration for me. I found there was a lack of healthy, vegan food and I was presented with an opportunity to open a café there for the local community and travellers. The café is the first of its type in Cambodia and we are hoping to franchise the concept throughout the whole of Asia.

I think it’s great! Yes we have a lot of work to do but there’s now more emphasis for eco-friendly business and practices. New and exciting business initiatives are coming up. I do think there’s a long way to go but we’re definitely on the right track – I’ve seen major changes over the past few years and it’s getting better. We live in a very sophisticated environment so the best thing we can do is to reconnect with the environment and become more aware on issues.

There is a splash pool with slide specifically for children and also the “kids for all seasons” program, the all-day kids club, certainly meets the higher expectations of not only parents but the youngsters too. The highlight of the stay was our rejuvenating experience at the comprehensive – 3 story building Spa. Lucas’ Accomodation Recommendation: Tiger Mountain

Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge is an intimate boutique mountain hotel and gateway to the Himalaya that values personalised experience, above all. It’s an institution of tailored adventures and luxury hospitality in Nepal. If only the walls of Tiger Mountain could speak, it would be of stories within stories of individuals who have been and wrote countless books about Nepal’s beauty and serenity. Hands down, the best view in Pokhara. Wake up for sunrise and encounter a parallel universe, beyond anything you’ve ever imagined. Truly, a must existence. There’s magic in this sanctuary of tranquility that is so healing; bringing you closer to nature, and most of all, it even brings you closer to yourself. The food is exquisite, the simplicity of everything makes moments seem like a painting. If you are looking to book, don’t think twice. Spend at least three days here, you can thank me later. The staff at Tiger Mountain are the best, it’s like walking into a family, and not at all like a hotel. Overall, Nepal is a bucket list treasure that must be marveled. From luxury travelers to rough and ready backpackers alike, there is something here that will change the way you see things.

WANDERLUST DINING

MAMA’S FOOD IS THE BEST

OPENED JUST LAST YEAR, MAMA KELLY RESTAURANT IN AMSTERDAM EASILY WON THE HEARTS AND STOMACHS OF BOTH THE LOCALS AND TOURISTS, AND HERE IS WHY!

76

WANDERLUST DINING Renowned for its Surf & Turf only menu, so that is either chicken or lobster, MaMa Kelly serves these options in a shockingly happy hue of pink interior. Where as the menu may be simple, the all-round experience is anything but unassuming.

The Lowdown

As a whole the restaurant is pink – very pink – and located in the mammoth historical space of the Olympic Stadium, MaMa Kelly is not for the shy and reserved diner. At MaMa’s you are here to make a statement – oh and to take some amazingly (pink) stylized Instagram pictures, so dress to impress.

The Menu

Firstly consider if you like chicken, if you don’t maybe you prefer lobster, and if it is a sure ‘yes’ to any of these two, then MaMa Kelly restaurant will be exactly the place for you! If your taste buds actually declined both, then note that it is still worth paying MaMa a visit as this place is certainly one not to be missed, even if it just for some cheeky desserts. Favourite starters include the lobster soup, chestnut and pumpkin soup, and the Burrata with avocado cream. Then with the focus on chicken and lobster, the choice of the mains becomes simplified. Be tempted with the delicious lobster risotto or lobster with butter. And experience MaMa to the fullest by trying their signature French farmland chicken cooked from a scale of classic (lime and parsley) to spicy (barbecue mustard). If you do like chicken but may not be that adventurous, then options such as a club sandwich can be conveniently ordered. And for dessert at MaMa Kelly, the Blondie is a sure winner. But don’t panic if the sound of a pure Surf & Turf menu stops you in your tracks, as there is option for meat (steak) as well as a selection of vegetarian dishes. Everything at MaMa Kelly is prepared with the freshest ingredients by a group of enthusiastic, talented cooks, led by executive chef Wilbrenninck that is sure to make you come back for more.

The Roundup

The team behind MaMa Kelly has gone all out in being bold and solid in their approach for the restaurant and has certainly managed to bring a sense of fun to fine dining. It is a place that is ‘happening,’ where you come to watch other diners who – may be like yourself – will spend a majority of their meal Instagramming themselves and their food.
