In this November edition of Qatar Happening, we proudly present Qatar as the thriving hub for MICE events in the region. With cutting–edge facilities, world–class hotels, and an array of cultural experiences, Qatar promises an unforgettable journey for you and your guests. This edition delves into Qatar's ambitious MICE initiatives, a trend that began right after Qatar’s first liquefied natural gas shipment to Spain in 1997. December 2, 2010, we all know, rewrote history in multiple ways: it was not just FIFA’s verdict for Qatar, it firmly established Doha as a regional Meetings Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destination, in part because of the cascading effect of a global sporting event (which, research shows has moved Qatar’s economy by 3.4 percent forward in 2023). The other part has come from Qatar’s turning itself into one of the leading MICE destinations offering world–class service and state–of–the–art MICE facilities combined with a variety of tourist attractions. In the words of Philip Dickinson, vice president, international markets, Qatar Tourism, “The country is well–equipped to cater to the diverse needs and demands of any corporate event, from conferences and business meetings to workshops and seminars.” In our exclusive sector focus, we bring you Berthold Trenkel, COO of Qatar Tourism to explain how Qatar is uniquely poised as the MICE capital of the region and the initiatives that the pivotal tourism body is taking to augment the city’s prospects in the coming days. From the other end of the MICE market, Rawad Sleem, GM of NextFairs, shares his perspective about hosting events in Qatar. In the other sections, we bring a basket of varied minds – Carla Manuela Martins Ferreir, GM of Talabat Mart in the retail sector to Tina Balachandran, clinical director at Flourishing Minds Clinic in the mental health realm to Alessandro Bravi, team representative for Sauber, who shares his insights and aspirations for this Formula 1 (F1) team's future. For the intrepid traveller, we present four cities that beckon exploration in November. Staycation seekers will find solace at the DoubleTree by Hilton Downtown and the AlRayyan Hotel. Food enthusiasts can indulge in the sumptuous New Sora Sky Brunch at Park Hyatt Doha, while those seeking rejuvenation will find comfort at the Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Centre. Also, on the cover of this issue, we have showcased QR codes, which simplify the scanning process, ensuring a more user–friendly experience for all events. Wishing you a month filled with extraordinary adventures and cherished moments in Qatar. Happy reading! Warm regards,

Short Shots Favourite travel destination: Each journey becomes a personal adventure, filled with exciting discoveries and cherished moments be it the bustling streets of Tokyo, the historical landmarks of Rome, or the serene beaches of Bali, every destination has something special to offer. Most favourite book: What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith – It emphasises the importance of self–awareness, adaptability, and continuous learning, empowering me to reach new heights by harping on the need to evolve and overcome obstacles. Most favourite meal: Bacalhau à Braz, a traditional Portuguese dish, allows me to keep my connection to my heritage even while being raised in South Africa. By savouring Bacalhau à Braz, I honour my cultural roots and celebrate the flavours unique to Portuguese cuisine. Unwinding after a long day: Playing padel (which combines elements of tennis and squash and has become a regular part of my routine) and, of late, softball (especially because the camaraderie among teammates, the joy of hitting the ball, and the friendly competition all contribute to a sense of relaxation and enjoyment).

FIFA and beyond: Qatar’s MICE ambitions December 2, 2010 rewrote history in multiple ways: it was not just FIFA’s verdict for Qatar, it firmly established Doha as a regional Meetings Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destination, partly because of the cascading effect of a global sporting event (which, research shows has moved Qatar’s economy by 3.4 percent forward in 2023) and the wise mix of tradition with state–of–the art infrastructure facilities – from the Hamad International Airport to convention centres (Qatar National Convention Center and Doha Exhibition and Convention Center) – that the country’s leadership has built.

he MICE trend began well into the early–2000s when conferences, exhibitions and meetings started making a beeline for Qatar, partly on the back of the country’s first liquefied natural gas shipment of 160 million cubic metres to Spain in 1997. Qatar is a great combination of tradition and modernity. It has a blend of cultural heritage with its many museums, galleries and cultural centres with world– class facilities for hosting big, global events, in addition to architectural marvels, luxurious hotels with the hospitality sector having created over of 13,000 new

hotel rooms during its preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022. All of these could, however, take shape on the back of Qatar high safety ranking – it has ranked first out of 118 countries in the world, scoring a 13.3 crime index and 86.7 safety index based on Numbeo's rime Index metrics. It’s been estimated that MICE will contribute 20 percent for Qatar’s 2030 goal of 6 million tourists annually. Philip Dickinson, VP, international markets, Qatar Tourism has said, “This year, Qatar also continues with an action–packed calendar of global events and exhibitions...”

Doha, named Arab Tourism Capital 2023 this year, has already hosted some major sporting events in 2023: the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix and the Geneva International Motor Show. The Qatar Moto GP Grand Prix will be held on November 17 & 19. From October 2, 2023 until March 2024, International Horticultural Exhibition – Expo 2023 Doha, will take place, an event, in which more than 50 countries will participate, is expected to attract millions of visitors. These will have a spiralling impact on Qatar’s MICE prospects.

QT’s multipronged approach to strategically position Qatar as a global destination Berthold Trenkel, COO, Qatar Tourism sat with QH to explain how Qatar is uniquely poised as the MICE capital of the region and the initiatives that the pivotal tourism body is taking to augment the city’s prospects in the coming days.

Berthold Trenkel, COO, Qatar Tourism

atar Tourism envisions the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry as integral to its strategic objectives, according to Berthold Trenkel, COO, Qatar Tourism Authority. In his opinion, following ‘leisure,’ MICE is the second most important pillar driving growth in Qatar’s tourism sector. “It is followed by domestic tourism and sports tourism as the third and fourth pillars. Hosting prestigious, global events like the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar as well as important trade events such as the Destination Wedding Planners Congress or the upcoming Web Summit Qatar, provide an opportunity to continuously position Qatar as a global destination capable of successfully hosting large–scale events while providing its visitors with memorable experiences,” explains Trenkel.

In Focus Hybrid events Hybrid events have undoubtedly emerged as a pivotal element in the evolution of the MICE industry, especially in light of the unprecedented changes brought by the global pandemic, in Trenkel’s opinion. “When it comes to hybrid events, we have a rich and proven track record in orchestrating a diverse range of gatherings, and our approach is highly adaptable to cater to the unique requirements of each event. In doing so, we are well–prepared to accommodate the most appropriate format, whether that be in–person, virtual, or a blend of both,” opines Trenkel.

These events are pivotal, contributing significantly to Qatar’ longer–term target of becoming one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the region. “By hosting such events, we get to showcase Qatar’s experiences to the world, highlighting the country’s hospitality, cultural richness, and organisational expertise to all visitors. This positive exposure has the potential to establish Qatar as a go–to destination for both leisure and business travellers. These events not only draw international attention but help us achieve our strategic goals through increased tourism, hotel occupancy, and business activities,” opines Trenkel. Speaking of the industry’s evolution, Trenkel says that over the past 10 years, Qatar Tourism (QT) has strategically positioned Qatar as a global tourism destination. “We have issued licenses for business events offices, organised numerous high–profile events, and hosted induction trips for MICE specialists to showcase the country's world–class facilities and services. QT has also expanded its international markets team. With more than 95 years of combined industry experience, the team works to secure Qatar’s appeal among global reputed tour operators and international travel agency networks. Qatar successfully delivered a phenomenal FIFA World Cup™ tournament and demonstrated to the world

its ability to organise large–scale, global events seamlessly.

Qatar’s appeal for global events •

Qatar sits at the crossroads between East and West and its convenient location means it is six to eight hours away from most major cities across the globe.

The country’s international airport and national airline are both award–winning. Qatar Airways has won the title of ‘Airline of the Year’ by Skytrax many times over and boasts unmatched service and network coverage, while Hamad International Airport has also been voted the Best Airport in the World for two years in a row.

We also have excellent public transportation facilities, which was demonstrated during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ where the Doha Metro and tram network carried more than 18.2 million passengers seamlessly.

Qatar’s MICE facilities are world– class, with 128 venues offering a combined exhibition capacity of 70,000 square metres. Qatar has close to 40,000 room keys.

Visitors can enjoy a varied tourism offering while in the country to round out their stay. From nature escapes to the desert or sea, excursions at more contemporary destinations such as museums, a business stay can be complemented by experiences to discover Qatar’s heritage and culture.

Role of QT QT, in Trenkel’s words, works with stakeholders to offer a range of support and incentives to event organisers to ease their path when conducting business in Qatar. This includes subvention for MICE events, in–kind support, visa facilitation, host site inspections, cultural packages, a QMICE programme, and financial support towards services in Qatar, assessed on a case–by–case basis. “We also take pride in our purpose– built, state–of–the–art exhibition centres such as the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) and the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). Our impressive indoor venues, like the National Museum of Qatar, and outdoor settings, such as the Katara Cultural Village, provide diverse options to suit different event requirements. Moreover, Qatar offers a wide range of hotels that cater to every corporate need and preference,” says Trenkel. QT’s presence in international trade fairs and exhibitions helps to promote Qatar globally as a destination for MICE events, participating in the likes of WTM London, ITB Berlin, ILTM Asia Pacific, and Seatrade Cruise Global. Qatar Tourism has also received two ISO certifications for Event Sustainability Management and Quality Management Systems.

“Strategic location, accessibility & cultural diversity boost Doha’s edge in MICE”

Rawad Sleem, co–founder and general manager of NeXTfairs 30 | QH | November 2023

In Focus In conversation with QH, Rawad Sleem, co–founder and general manager of NeXTfairs talks about Doha’s strengths as a MICE hotspot, how the pandemic has built a more resilient sector, all around and the factors for hosting hybrid events.

QH: How would you rate Qatar’s potential as the MICE capital of the Middle East? Sleem: Qatar’s potential as the MICE (Meetings, Incentives,

Conferences, and Exhibitions) capital of the Middle East is exceptionally promising. The nation has made substantial investments in its infrastructure, boasting state–of–the–art convention centres, exhibition spaces, exemplified by the Qatar National Convention Centre and the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center and world–class hotels. Situated strategically in the Middle East, Qatar offers excellent accessibility through Hamad International Airport, serving as a major aviation hub. Accommodation options, ranging from luxurious to budget–friendly, cater to diverse MICE event requirements. Qatar’s political stability and welcoming environment are appealing to international visitors, and its active promotion as a business and innovation hub enhances its attractiveness as a MICE destination. The commitment to connectivity, sustainability, and industry partnerships further solidifies Qatar’s potential in the MICE sector, providing a diverse and comprehensive landscape for hosting successful events.

QH: While organising Qatar Travel Mart (QTM) what struck you as positives that can go in Doha’s favour, that are distinct and different than the other cities in the region? Sleem: Doha’s strategic location in the Middle East,

centered around Hamad International Airport, significantly enhances its accessibility for attendees worldwide, giving it a competitive edge over regional counterparts. Furthermore, its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes offer a distinctive setting for MICE activities, offering multitude of experiences beyond the event. In addition to this, Qatar’s proactive engagement in forging partnerships with international organisations and associations for hosting major conferences and exhibitions has solidified its reputation in the MICE industry, rendering it a preferred destination for event planners seeking a proven record of successful hosting.

QH: If you were to give 5 factors that could clinch any event to Qatar, what would they be? Sleem: Doha’s strengths lie in its world–class infrastructure, strategic location, business–friendly

environment, cultural offerings, and established industry partnerships. These distinct advantages set Doha apart from other cities in the region and make it a compelling choice for hosting events like QTM.

QH: What is your view on hybrid events? Is the future going to see more hybrid events, especially in the context of the way the MICE industry has evolved through the pandemic? Sleem: Hybrid events, seamlessly combining in–person

and virtual elements, have emerged as a pivotal trend within the MICE industry, spurred by the transformative impact of the COVID–19 pandemic. These events offer multifaceted advantages: they afford attendees enhanced flexibility, accommodating those facing travel constraints, budgetary limitations, or health considerations, fostering inclusivity. Moreover, hybrid events expand their reach globally, reducing environmental footprints associated with travel while providing organizers with valuable data analytics for event refinement. However, the intrinsic value of in–person events in fostering networking, relationship–building, and immersive experiences remains undiminished. Effective hybrid event design entails striking the right balance between physical and virtual components to ensure meaningful and interactive participation for both on–site and remote attendees. It is increasingly likely that the future of the MICE industry will witness a harmonious blend of in–person and hybrid events, delivering diverse options for participants and harnessing the distinct advantages of each approach.

QH: What has the pandemic taught the MICE industry and how is the industry geared to apply the lessons that the pandemic has taught us? Sleem: The pandemic has emphasized the need for resilience and adaptability, shaping the MICE industry through swift transitions to virtual and hybrid events and enhanced health and safety measures. Technology’s accelerated adoption, focusing on engagement and accessibility, is a lasting priority. Diversifying revenue streams to mitigate risk and expanding the global reach of events has become essential. Moreover, a spotlight on reskilling and training for digital event and crisis management is driving industry investments in skill development.

Talking To

Nurturing minds, transforming lives Sara Naveed talks to Tina Balachandran, a clinical psychologist on her diverse experience from enhancing couples’ dynamics to advocating for mental health in demanding contexts, including disaster response through her Flourishing Minds Clinic. QH: What inspired the creation of Flourishing Minds Clinic and how has it evolved to support mental health in the community?

Balachandran: Since 2009, I’ve worked in Qatar, primarily with Qatar Airways. I often received requests for private psychotherapy sessions, but my license limited me to in–house clients. Raising mental health awareness, I noticed systemic gaps – limited resources, cultural diversity challenges, and varying standards which led to the founding of Flourishing Minds Clinic in 2013. While secure in my airline role, I did pro bono community work to destigmatise mental health. Transitioning to private practice before the pandemic was challenging. An encounter led to Flourishing Minds Clinic, a specialised facility after a year of licensing.

QH: Can you share a powerful example of transformation through your trauma therapy approach? Balachandran: Each client holds a transformative narrative, often rooted in past trauma or ongoing distressing experiences. Through evidence–based techniques and a nurturing space, we mend these fragments, allowing them to reclaim their sense of control, heal, and progress daily. In trauma therapy, clients rediscover themselves, rebuild relationships, and move forward.

QH: How does the Flourishing Minds Festival contribute to reducing mental health stigma? Balachandran: The Flourishing Minds Festival fights mental health stigma through awareness, support, and

34 | QH | November 2023

community engagement. It aligns with the clinic’s mission to nurture well–being and understanding. The festival celebrated triumphs, creative expression, and connections. Workshops, discussions, and sports events engaged 150+ participants, promoting resilience and advocacy.

QH: What insights have you gained about professionals’ well–being in high–stress environments? Balachandran: High–stress work environments pose risks to professionals’ mental and physical health. Conditions like anxiety, depression, and burnout is common. Resilience and a strong support system are crucial for coping. A balanced work–life, along with access to psychological services, is vital. Leadership, stress reduction protocols, and psychologically safe workplaces are essential in safeguarding well–being. A holistic approach is needed to address the unique challenges faced by professionals in high–stress roles.

Talking To

Formula 1 for those who can embrace the “exhilarating rush”: Alessandro Alunni Bravi In an exclusive tête–à–tête with Manu Prmar, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, the recently appointed team representative for Sauber, we bring you insights and aspirations for this Formula 1 (F1) team’s future, peppered as it is with Bravi’s extensive experience.

QH: You’re back in Qatar for the second time. How do you compare it to your experience in 2021 at Lusail International Circuit? Bravi: Hosting an F1 event here is impressive. The setup, facilities – everything, including the Grand Prix itself, is top–notch. This highlights the outstanding work being done in Qatar.

QH: How does the team handle the pressure on a new track? Do you personally feel it? Bravi: F1 thrives on pressure. It’s part of our daily routine. Regardless of your role – be it an engineer, mechanic, or driver – delivering peak performance is non–negotiable. Rather than just pressure, it’s more like an exhilarating rush. Certainly, when results are elusive and targets seem distant, the pressure intensifies. If you can’t rise above it, this sport might not be your calling.

QH: Do you have a favourite F1 location? Bravi: I enjoy travelling and exploring various places. Being Italian, I have a soft spot for all the Italian circuits. I also appreciate all the other venues as they offer a glimpse into diverse cultures. Our expanding calendar means venturing into new territories. We’re a global sport by involving people from diverse backgrounds in our sport.

QH: What does it mean to be part of the Alfa Romeo team? Bravi Bravi: It means bearing the responsibility of representing a prestigious brand with a rich motorsport heritage, especially during this crucial transition phase into the future. We take immense pride in being chosen by Audi, a testament to Sauber Group’s strategic significance in F1.

QH: Is F1 an exceptionally attractive platform for advertisers and marketers right now? Bravi: Absolutely, but it’s not just because we’re an F1 team. We’ve integrated into the global platform by integrating females int our audiences and embracing a robust sustainability strategy, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 which is more about a well–defined vision for our sport.

Life Hack

Work from home: Finding success beyond the office

Benefits

ately, the idea of an office has shifted from a physically shared area to a designated space at home. As the world grappled with COVID–19, many companies adapted to shifting their work environments to remote or hybrid work structures. As this was a matter of public health and safety rather than a question of optimal working conditions, it was undoubtedly an immense success for many companies. The real question comes when companies and employees want to adopt the same work–from–home culture today when things are going back to normal. On one side of the table, some managers worry about the loss of office culture and productivity, while on the other, many employees argue a flexible environment lets them do their best work.

• • • • • • • • • •

Flexible working hours More focused tasks Reduced distractions Reduced stress Improved work/life balance Independence Mastering communications No commute time and expense Fewer interruptions Possibilities of relocation

Effective work–from–home means an employee must ensure they follow an appropriate set of working hours tailored to their individual lifestyle. Apart from working hours, it is crucial to designate a dedicated workspace due to the presence of unavoidable distractions. A lot of working–from–home strategies revolve around productivity tips, but we all know everyone learns differently. The individual needs to find an organisation or productivity method that suits them the most. Communication is the key to working from home scenario. As access to clients and co–workers is only through email,

Drawbacks • • • • • • • • •

Self–discipline required Harder to shut down Less ad hoc learning Fewer interactions with co–workers Distractions at home Lack of productivity Can be unhealthy No separation between work and leisure time Relying on trust

phone calls, or messages, it is important to let the peers know the preferred way of communication. By doing this you are giving your peers and clients the fastest access to yourself and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A lot of people think work–from–home employees are full of freedom, quiet, and having endless cups of tea. Freedom is not exactly how it is described. No matter if a person is employed or self–employed, working from home still means they will be working to deadlines, setting schedules, and having more responsibilities to finish their tasks.

The restaurant's elevated location in Msheireb Downtown offered a breathtaking view of Doha Corniche, adding a scenic dimension to the brunch.

The diverse spread The culinary spread was diverse and indulgent, featuring seafood, oysters, sushi, and a standout Robata Live station offering an array of meats with delectable sauces. “DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Downtown: Welcoming, reliable & uncomplicated” During our staycation at the property, we also had the privilege of having a chit–chat with Bernard Fantoli, general manager, DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Downtown. QH: What makes DoubleTree Hotel Doha unique? Fantoli: DoubleTree Hotel in Doha is strategically located in the heart of the city,

making it convenient for both business and leisure travellers. We're close to major roads, business hubs, and tourist attractions, and we offer easy access to metro stations. But what indeed makes us stand out is that we're an all–suites hotel with spacious 1– and 2–bedroom apartments, flooded with natural daylight and featuring oversized balconies. Our open kitchens are fully equipped, offering guests the ultimate convenience. When it comes to dining, we have an authentic Parisian Boulangerie for all–day dining and a splendid rooftop venue, Mood Lounge, a club and restaurant with a panoramic view of Doha city and live entertainment every night.

QH: Can you share some of the improvisations and memorable moments you've had since the hotel's opening in Doha? Fantoli: One of the most memorable moments was when we had over 250 guests

Bernard Fantoli, general manager, DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Downtown Short Shots Favourite travel destination: The Caribbean. It's a paradise on Earth. Your go–to book: Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint–Exupéry – a timeless classic with profound lessons. The best advice you've ever received: "Please don't take it for granted." This has constantly reminded me to appreciate every moment. Your favourite dish and where you had it: Brandade de Morue. I had it at a small restaurant on the coast of Brittany. Unwinding after a hard day: I love promenades by the sea, a ballade en bord de mer (a stroll by the sea) is a great way to clear my mind and rejuvenate.

at our Mood Lounge. It was an incredible night, and we were short–staffed, so I acted as a valet and host. It was a challenging yet fulfilling experience. We've had numerous successful nights at Mood Lounge despite the hurdles we faced. It's moments like these that truly define the hospitality industry.

QH: If you had to use three adjectives to describe DoubleTree Hotel, what would they be? Fantoli: DoubleTree Hotel is "welcoming" – we pride ourselves on creating a

warm and inviting atmosphere. We're also "reliable" – our brand is known for delivering consistent quality across all our locations. And last but not least, we're "uncomplicated" – we aim to make our guests' stay simple and enjoyable without unnecessary complications.

QH: Looking back at your journey with DoubleTree Hotel, what are the three key learnings that have shaped your career? Fantoli: Reflecting on my journey here, the first learning would be involving all

parties when defining the hotel concept. Everyone must understand the property's unique qualities. The second is the power of empowering people – a motivated team can achieve remarkable results. Lastly, I've learned that taking the time to calculate and anticipate partnerships is crucial to ensuring all parties involved are satisfied.

QH: If you could redo anything at the hotel, what would it be? Fantoli: If I had the chance for a redo, I would focus on enhancing our leisure facilities. We have many long–term guests staying in our well–equipped and beautifully designed apartments, and I believe providing more leisure options would improve their experience.

The EQS sedan is the inaugural model built on a dedicated platform designed exclusively for luxury electric vehicles. Unlike hybrids or gasoline–powered cars, every aspect of its design, from materials to safety systems, is optimised to support its advanced all–electric drivetrain. This focus allows for a spacious, comfortable, and forward–thinking design. With three levels of heating and cooling ventilation, the EQS ensures comfort year–round. Ventilated seats keep the inside cool, and clothes dry in warmer weather by gently circulating air through perforations in the seat and backrest. The design philosophy of the EQS sedan, characterised by “sensual purity,” stems from its all–electric foundation. This vision is reflected in every surface, combining cab–forward proportions with a sleek fastback profile to create a spacious cabin while maintaining agile handling through its long wheelbase and four–wheel steering.
