Arab youth's top ally in Arab Youth Survey is Qatar

ccording to the 15th ASDA'A BCW Arab Youth Survey, Qatar is considered the closest ally by Arab youth in their country. It is also one of the top five countries they would like to live in and emulate. The survey highlighted the profound impact of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on the Arab world, fostering unity and boosting Arab pride. Events such as the FIFA World Cup and Expo 2020 Dubai were recognised for promoting better understanding of the Arab world.

ASDA’A BCW, a leading communications consultancy in the Middle East and North Africa, presented these findings in their survey called 'Living a New Reality'. This survey, with over 200 million participants, represents the largest study of Arab youth.

The survey revealed that Arab youth consider all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Egypt as strong allies. Qatar is the top ally, with 92 percent of respondents naming it as such. Other strong allies include Kuwait (91%), Egypt (89%), the UAE (88%), and Saudi Arabia (86%). Qatar is also among the top five countries they want to live in and emulate, appearing for the first time since 2014, possibly due to the positive impact of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

According to Sunil John, President of BCW MENA and Founder of ASDA’A BCW, Qatar's recent achievements, including successfully hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022, have impressed young Arabs in the region. Qatar's investments in infrastructure and economic diversification have played a crucial role in its inclusion among the top five preferred nations by Arab youth, a position it hasn't held since 2014. These positive trends suggest promising prospects for sustainable development in the wider region.

"Using artistic mediums to represent emotions"

In conversation with Sara Naveed, Haytham Sharrouf, a Doha-based multi-medium artist and painter (who was artist in residence at Doha Fire Station 2019-20) talks about his mediums, why pearls have a special place in his creations and his project of pride. He has created a melded space with painting, architecture, graphic art and installation, and describes his own genre as “fusion”.

Haytham Sharrouf with his work

QH: How do you incorporate different genres and mediums in your artwork and design projects?

Haytham: We are gifted with different organs that function in unique ways, allowing us to exist as humans. In my art, I like to use different mediums and genres to represent different roles and emotions. I often take a figurative approach to offer a glimpse into the current state of the world while also celebrating the beauty of emotions through expressionism.

QH: What role does storytelling play in your art?

Haytham: Art is a profound medium that allows me to express my personal narrative to the world. It serves as a reflection of my internal state of mind and an authentic representation of the many phases a human being can face. As I continue to grow and evolve, my work changes alongside me, reflecting my deeper understanding of the world and the external factors that have shaped me as an individual. Being born in Latin America and raised in Lebanon which is a place of constant political conflict that left me longing for a peaceful existence, I am a sum of both experiences and found my own way through the power of art.

QH: Could you explain how you maintain the consistency of pearls in your artwork?

Haytham: As Gibran Khalil Gibran says, “A pearl is a temple built by pain around a grain of sand.” When an irritant enters an oyster, pearls are formed. I always convey a metaphorical approach of an irritating experience that shaped us from within and produced a beautiful precious gem-like experience. Through my artwork, I paint an intimate figurative style that objectifies the impact of emotions on human bodies, and how we are shaped by the traces of successive stages of a life.

QH: What inspires your artwork in Doha and how do you capture the essence of the city?

Haytham: I immersed myself in the vibrant arras of the local culture, establishing a profound connection with the symbolic power of pearls — an emblem

that holds deep cultural significance for Qatar. I started to embody artistically the philosophy of pearls with human biomorphic forms to reflect on the past experiences that create and shape us as individuals. We can use the lessons of our history to create a future that honours our heritage, celebrates our diversity, and inspires generations to come.

QH: How does the intersection of architecture, philosophy, and technology influence your creative process?

Haytham: Doha inspired me to embark on a new multidisciplinary series of artwork in which I try to capture architecture, and the city itself. During my art residency at Doha Fire station, I materialised architecture and personalised the materials with a futuristic creation that pushes the traditional boundaries of painting, architecture, graphic art and installation, through the intersection between architecture, philosophy and technology.

Narrative dialogue behind Khalil Gibran - Sharrouf's project of pride

QH: Can you share a project where you pushed the boundaries of traditional art and design practices?

Haytham: Narrative Dialogue behind Khalil Gibran is a project I executed during my art residency at Doha Fire Station 2019-20 where I showed how a narrative could be interpreted into architectural forms. Gibran was deeply in love with Palestinian poet Mey Ziadeh for 20 years despite the fact that neither

of them met in person. The proof of their love can be found in a series of letters. The two abstracted human forms embody the shells that they built through isolation yet the distance they had to endure - the main inspiration for the sculpture.

Haytham: Architecture is a medium that has the power to shape our world and the way we experience it. I'm fascinated by the idea of narratives as a reflection of reality and how it can be used to explore the true meaning of architecture for those who inhabit it. Our buildings are not just physical structures, but rather prototypes that offer a glimpse into the possibilities of how living, working, and cultural spaces could be transformed. Through my art, I aim to explore the philosophical implications of architecture, weaving together a dosser of mediums and genres that evoke a range of emotions and ideas.

ani Akkari’s leadership inspiration is one that’s blends both the rigours of a system with the demands of the heart which he draws from the famous read Leaders Eat Last. “Simplify IT; elevate user experience”

Methodical, on top of business trends with a keen eye on tomorrow’s needs are surefire ingredients for a leader. Meet Hasan Khan, general manager, Cisco Qatar who steers the company here and shares his take on the way forward.

atar has always believed in getting the best in business – irrespective of the sector – and the IT industry as an enabler and the backbone of every other business now – is, no doubt, in vogue.

As testimony, Hasan Khan, general manager, Cisco Qatar cites a recent example of how Cisco is enhancing network capabilities and driving growth for business in Qatar. He says, “Hamad International Airport (HIA) has recently launched a next generation Wi-Fi 6 service, empowered by Cisco technologies, across its state-of-the-art terminal to further enhance the airport’s passenger experience. Through ubiquitous highspeed connectivity, passengers who are travelling via Qatar can easily connect with family, friends, and business contacts. With this Wi-Fi 6 investment, HIA will be able to better understand how passengers move through the airport, including dwell times and traffic flows, which will in turn help optimise retail opportunities and allow passengers to consistently have great experiences.”

Vodafone Qatar, too, has collaborated with Cisco by upgrading its network last year offering enhanced 5G services, and enabling superior end-user experiences. “As part of the network upgrade, Vodafone Qatar implemented Cisco Ultra 5G Core and utilised additional Cisco solutions to enhance its network with virtual core, automation, and security, resulting in both capacity and revenue increase,” says Khan.

Speaking on how the company has been adapting to the evolving technology landscape and the increasing demand for connectivity, Khan confidently attests to the fact that Cisco is conscious of the need for simple and secure wireless experiences to help both businesses and individuals to connect more people and things, and has developed new wireless, cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) products and solutions. He informs, among other initiatives, “Global demand for connectivity has been increasing at a rapid pace, with 64.8 percent of the world’s population (or 5.18 billion people) connected to the internet. In Qatar, internet penetration stands at 99 percent and close to 5 million active cellular mobile devices shared amongst the approximate 2.7 million inhabitants.”

Internet of things

IoT has become increasingly prevalent across various sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, and utilities. It has begun a revolution of industries by enabling the creation of smart factories; paving the way for advanced fleet management systems, smart logistics, and connected vehicles; and is playing a crucial role in enabling smart grids and enhancing energy management, according to Khan.

With GSMA forecasts pegging total IoT connections to more than double between 2021 and 2030, Khan smells subsequent opportunity for Cisco to create seamless onboarding of those devices via secure connections that can be managed simply. Another area is industries looking to evolve their digital strategies in support of hybrid work needing simplified solutions to connect and manage low-cost, oftenstationary devices deployed at massive scale (Mass IoT). “Cisco IoT Control Centre fulfils these industry needs with a simplified and secure connectivity management package purpose-built for lower complexity IoT devices,” says Khan.

Summarising on Cisco’s initiatives in the other big IT phenomenon – Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Khan cites their history in enterprise deployments, ranging from intelligent networks and connectivity, cybersecurity, customer sales and support, chatbots, and hybrid work tools amongst many others. “Cisco unveiled new, powerful generative AI technology at Cisco Live recently that will help organisations drive productivity and simplicity for their workforce.”

Webex by Cisco will increase productivity and raise customer experience, in Khan’s estimate, adding, “new AI capabilities in Cisco Security Cloud will remove complexity, simplify policy management, and improve threat response. To support Cisco's continued advancements in AI capabilities for hybrid workspaces, Cisco is announcing the Room Bar Pro, with the most powerful processor and able to be deployed across customers’ most commonly used workspaces”.

As a global leader in cybersecurity, networking, and collaboration, Cisco analyses huge amounts of data to identify and contain threats, ensuring smoother workflows, with the. Cisco Talos security team blocking an estimated 50 billion threats a day, adding that while digitisation initiatives have continued to be successful in the Middle East, with rapid adoption of digital technologies, comes added and growing exposure to risks of sophisticated cyber-attacks that have the potential to derail the progress and benefits of digitisation. He recommends that there is a critical need to strengthen cyber resilience. “The new business reality is

that everything is connected, and everyone is vulnerable. To manage the risks posed by highly distributed teams, security must be built in, not bolted on as an afterthought.”

Khan believes there will be a tremendous amount of innovation in the next decades in security, driven by automation, AI, machine learning, proactive detection and remediation and prevention. “That is the goal of security – prevent threats, but when you can’t prevent them, detect them immediately so you know something is wrong, and then respond, remediate, and record in real time or near-real time.”

The way forward

The thrust for IT products will come from what customers need. The mantra here is: simplicity. Speaking about the newest technologies introduced by Cisco at its recent annual Cisco Live event, Khan highlighted the company’s commitment to simplify and upgrade user experiences.

With simplification at its core, the Cisco Networking Cloud vision details how Cisco will deliver a single platform experience for seamlessly managing all networking domains.

Looking ahead, Khan is confident that new generative AI-powered summarisation capabilities in Webex by Cisco will increase productivity and elevate customer experience and “new AI capabilities in Cisco Security Cloud will remove complexity, simplify policy management, and improve threat response”.

“Success is bred by people”

A long professional journey – starting from the London market to building a homegrown insurance company in Qatar –cannot not be eventful. Who better to parley with on the roadmap to accomplishment, but Elias Chedid, COO and deputy CEO, Seib Insurance to take us through his experience.

efore you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others,” said Jack Welch, American business executive.

Elias Chedid, COO and deputy CEO, Seib Insurance, reminds one of the first part of Welch’s quote on growing oneself, when he recounts his own experience as a young professional in London. Recounting his experience, Chedid says, “One memorable milestone from my career in the insurance industry was my experience in the London market during the 1990s. It was a transformative period where I had the opportunity to carry insurance slips in a traditional brown leather folder, navigate through the renowned Lloyds underwriters’ boxes, and respond to their challenges while finalising a line of insurance. This immersive experience provided me with invaluable knowledge and insights that laid the foundation for my growth and development within the insurance industry. Those early days in the London market taught me the essential skills and principles needed to forge a successful insurance career.”

The latter part of Welch’s quote comes across in Chedid’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in the insurance sector wherein he defines success as “ultimately

depending on people. From the board of directors to every single employee, surrounding yourself with the best individuals is essential to achieving the best results”. He speaks from experience since Chedid adds, “At Seib Insurance, it has been the exceptional individuals within our organisation who have played a pivotal role in our success story.”

“As an aspiring entrepreneur,” Chedid advises, “prioritise building a strong team and fostering a culture of excellence. Surround yourself with talented, dedicated professionals who share your vision and values. Invest in recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent across all levels of your organisation. Remember that the collective expertise, passion, and commitment of your team will be the driving force behind your company's success.”

Additionally, feels Chedid, it is important to create an environment that nurtures individual growth and empowers employees to contribute their unique skills and perspectives. “Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. Encourage open communication and create opportunities for mentorship and professional development,” he adds.

“Lastly,” Chedid is clear, “lead by example and demonstrate the qualities you want to see in others. Cultivate a positive and inclusive work culture, where every team member feels valued, respected, and motivated to give their best.”

Role of Seib Insurance

Seib Insurance is a prominent Qatari company, with majority shareholders comprising Qatar's esteemed investors. As a homegrown enterprise, Seib Insurance holds deep roots within the Qatari business arena, reflecting its strong

commitment to contributing to the local economy and supporting the national vision of Qatar. “However, Seib Insurance Insurance's importance extends beyond its economic value. The company has actively aligned its strategies with Qatar's national vision for 2030, demonstrating its commitment to supporting various aspects of the country's development. The company actively participates in and supports social, human, and environmental initiatives through partnerships with esteemed Qatari institutions such as Injaz Qatar, QFBA, and universities in Qatar,” Chedid informs.

Another crucial role that the company plays is in setting the best practices in Qatar's insurance industry. “We actively contribute to the market by providing technical expertise, sharing knowledge, and supporting regulatory initiatives that enhance the insurance business culture. Through these efforts, Seib Insurance contributes to positioning Qatar as one of the leading insurance markets in terms of service quality and the value it offers within the capital markets,” says Chedid.

Innovation is the name of the game at Seib Insurance and one of such measures is the establishment of an innovation team that is responsible for identifying emerging trends, exploring new ideas, and transforming them into actionable projects. “By involving employees from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, we ensure that different perspectives are considered, fostering a culture of collaboration and interdisciplinary thinking,” says Chedid.

Competition in the insurance industry in Qatar is crucial for market development, asserts Chedid and he drives Seib Insurance with some non-negotiables: service standards improvement, and driving investments in new products such as insurtech, and talent. But Chedid is quick to add, “This is most effective when supported by an evolving regulatory framework that aims to establish best practices in the industry, benefiting all stakeholders."

Bridging the gap between research and industry

Dr Hanan Farhat chose a career to plug a gap in the hydrocarbon industry’s research, development, and innovation capabilities. She later went on to found the country’s only corrosion centre under Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI). In a one-onone with QH, she speaks on diverse issues, including the challenges and opportunities for the country’s education sector.

alking the talk is Qatar’s strength and when it comes to empowering women, the track record is no less. What better an arena for women empowerment than Qatar Foundation, the state-led not-for profit organisation oriented towards education, science & research, and community development?

Attesting to this, Dr Hanan Farhat, founder & director of corrosion centre, Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute says, “The nice thing about being part of QEERI, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), and Qatar Foundation (QF) is that women receive significant support and recognition. Starting from QF’s leadership, chairperson, and CEO, women have been entrusted to lead the organisation to success, setting a path for all QF entities. QEERI and HBKU management has also historically supported and empowered women. You can see this in the number of women executives within HBKU’s colleges and research institutes, and in QEERI it can be seen in the number of women leading research centres (currently four out of five).”

According to Dr Farhat, Qatar is progressing at a fast rate, and research and innovation have been crucial to this progression. “Innovation is at the heart of the country’s development of state-ofart infrastructure, including public transportation, stadiums, museums, modern high-rises, and hospitals. Qatar’s focus on renewable energy and

sustainability has been fuelled by research and innovation support provided by QEERI’s HBKU. The QEERI Corrosion Center, for example, has contributed to the sustainability of Qatar’s industrial and urban infrastructure by providing stakeholders material and corrosion management solutions."

Career choice

Dr Farhat spent most of her career in the oil and gas industry, where she witnessed an unfortunate incident that led to the death of a friend and colleague. That incident was due to corrosion failure. “More than decade later, I witnessed a similar incident in Qatar, but luckily there were no casualties. I started to investigate what went wrong in the two incidents. I came to realise that while international standards were followed in both cases, they had not necessarily considered the harsh environmental conditions of the Middle East. This is because international standards and policies are set based on research data, while data from field studies in the Middle East is very limited. Accordingly, I saw a gap in the industry’s research, development, and innovation capabilities that needed to be plugged. I commenced my PhD studies while I was still working full time, eventually joining Qatar Petroleum Research and Innovation team. Since then, I have been engaged in several industry-demand driven research,

development, and innovation studies that have had a significant impact on Qatar’s oil and gas sector.”

Commenting on a successful project, Dr Farhat singles out the creation of QEERI’s Corrosion Center has resulted in successful engagement with industry and stakeholders, not only in Qatar but internationally. “The centre has been approached by French, Norwegian, and other international companies to provide solutions for some of the pressing corrosion and materials integrity matters. Since day one, the centre has worked closely with Qatar’s industries to shape its mission. Its main research programmes were selected after consultations with industry and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment,” says Dr Farhat, adding that a technical steering committee was established for the centre and consisted of stakeholders and industry representatives. “The committee is overseeing all research projects and provides input to ensure that each project is relevant to the centre's overarching objectives. The centre also represents the State of Qatar on regional and international standards committees, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ASTM International, and more. It has also established an international network that’s connected to some of the leading universities and research entities worldwide.”

Challenges and opportunities does Qatar's education sector

Clear and focused is Dr Farhat’s take on Qatar’s education sector. In her view, the sector needs to develop programmes that are industry-relevant and capable of providing graduates with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the modern workplace. “To assist, QF has consistently engaged with key stakeholders through programme reviews and internships.” She discloses that HBKU’s research institutes focus on impact-driven research, where engagement with stakeholders and industry is prioritised. “This has provided graduate students with opportunities to conduct

Rocket and Ruby Red Grapefruit Flatbread Salad with Warm Walnut Dressing

For this recipe, I give a guide line on quantities as I believe it is not always necessary to follow exact quantities when making this type of salad. If you love parmesan cheese slivers then put as much as you like. Remember to use a potato peeler for this as it will cut the 'sliver' pieces perfectly! Follow the same thinking for all the other ingredients, and add as much or as little as you like.

Serves 6

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes (flatbreads)

Oven temperature 180˚C

Ingredients

• Salad

• 1 large bunch of fresh rocket – washed and trimmed

• 2 ruby red grapefruit – peeled and segmented

• Parmesan cheese

• Tomatoes

• Lebanese cucumbers – skin removed

• Black olives

• Flatbreads

• 3 large Arabic flatbread

Instruction

Prepare parmesan flatbreads

Cut each flatbread into long strips. Brush each strip liberally with olive oil and sprinkle on the finely grated parmesan cheese. Place in a hot oven and bake until golden and crisp. Remove and store until required.

Prepare salad ingredients

Wash and clean. Either thinly slice or chop cucumbers. Chunk or slice tomatoes. Segment the grapefruit and reserve the grapefruit juice for later as this can also be sprinkled over the salad.

Assemble salad

Build the salad in layers using the flatbread crossing each other to build height. Finish off with shavings of fresh parmesan and black olives.

Make warm walnut dressing

Place 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil in a small saucepan and add walnuts, garlic and zaatar and heat oil over a low heat to infuse the flavours. When warm pour over salad and finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and cracked black pepper.

Serve

As soon as the salad is covered with the warm dressing take to the table.

• 60ml fresh parmesan – finely grated

• 60ml olive oil

• Warm walnut dressing

• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 200g walnuts

• Handful of fresh Zaatar – coarsely chopped

• 1 garlic – skin removed & thinly sliced

• Juice of one lemon

• Cracked black pepper

Jules’ tips: This is a great salad to show off your artistic flair – create a visual masterpiece using all the ingredients and remember to build height. Hold back the walnut dressing until the last moment. This is a hot liquid which will cook the salad leaves if left standing for too long. Serve either individually or as one large salad.

Fast lives needn’t dictate our rest and repose. And if a 90-minute window can bring calm to the body and mind, why not?

ecently, I had the delightful opportunity to visit eforea Spa, and it was a genuinely remarkable experience from beginning to end. Situated in a tranquil setting, the spa provided a serene escape from the fast-paced demands of my daily life.
