a new heart to Doha’s social scene. Watch our mixologists work their magic while

;

FILM IN FOCUS

A DEADLY GAME OF TRUTH OR DARE IT STARTS WITH A HARMLESS AND FUN GAME OF TRUTH OR DARE UNTIL IT TURNS INTO AN EVIL NIGHTMARE.

T

ruth or Dare: an innocent and entertaining party game where everyone gets to choose whether to answer a question or face a dare. The rules are simple: you must tell the truth and you must agree to the dare. So when a group of young people get together they are having a great time, relaxing and getting to know each other better by playing along with each others challenging questions and dares. But this mildly amusing competition descends into horror when someone or something begins to punish anyone who did not tell the truth or did not accept a dare. What makes it spookier is that we do not know what malevolent force is at work here – we just know that we are no longer

watching people enjoying themselves and we are now watching a terrifying film about the supernatural. They were playing the game – but now the game is playing them. And so are desperately trying to work out where the sinister game began, with a supernatural entity that moves the story from weird to gruesome – but that’s only the ones who have survived since one by one they are being killed off in totally bizarre yet convincing ways, sudden and shocking incidents that make us gasp and jump out of our seats. They have awakened an evil spirit which is intent on stealing their souls. Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) star along with

others you will recognize. Directed by Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) and produced by Blumhouse Productions (Happy Death Day, Get Out, Split) Cover your face and hide behind your hands at the sight of the smirking, evil expressions on the scary faces. Enjoy the gripping thrills – just don’t have nightmares!

Director: Jeff Wadlow | Genre: Horror, Thriller | Cast: Lucy Hale, Violett Beane, Tyler Posey Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar 13th April | QH Fun Fact: The second teenage slasher horror film featuring Lucy Hale, who previously appeared in Scream 4 (2011).

CELEBRITY FEATURE

H

ollywood has witnessed its fair share of child actresses come and go. They feature on a few soap operas or lifetime movies and they’re gone. Well, not in the case of Kathryn Newton. The budding star started out with a solid role on classic soap opera, All My Children. As she grew up we saw more and more of her. She had a big role on Gary Unmarried and even starred in the hit franchise Paranormal Activity. Kathryn even won an award at the 34th Young Artists Awards for the role. Well, over this past year she’s come a long way from being the girl in the haunted house…

Her growing influence started with her hit character on the long-running show Supernatural. But she really solidified her presence in 2017 with her role as the daughter you loved to hate in hit mini-series Big Little Lies starring alongside legends like Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. We’re barely into 2018 and she has already claimed the year. Kathryn had big roles in two Oscar nominated movies; LadyBird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Paired with all of the buzz surrounding her upcoming role in the eagerly awaited Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu, Kathryn has slowly but surely built her way towards becoming a household name. The blonde bombshell isn’t only known for her amazing acting skills, she’s also been killing it on the golf course. You read right, in her free time the Notre Dame High School graduate helped her team win three league championships during her time in school. The actress even admitted that if her acting career doesn’t work out she’s more than happy to head to University and continue her golfing. She really does it all. At only 21, the star has definitely kick started her career in full gear. Having her name mentioned among so many influential stars has guaranteed her respect and a solid place in Hollywood and on our screens...

WE SAT DOWN WITH QATARI ARTIST BOUTHAYNA ALI AL MUFTAH, AS SHE SHARES AN INSIGHT ON HER PASSION FOR ART. ALSO, WE GIVE YOU THE 101 ON SAMSUNG’S LATEST GALAXY S9 SERIES.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT WITH

Andreas Pfister DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS FOR IHG NORTHERN GULF & GENERAL MANAGER FOR INTERCONTINENTAL DOHA, SHARES AN INSIGHT OF WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AT THE HELM OF SUCH PROMINENT PROPERTY.

What are your thoughts about tourism in Qatar for the upcoming year?

Qatar has made great steps with the opening of visas for 80 countries. Qatar Tourism Authority and Discover Qatar are doing great work and are committed to driving tourism growth. Qatar Airways, a brilliant national carrier, is a great company, which showcases the quality a guest can expect whilst visiting Qatar. We have a good number of high-quality hotels with various price levels. There is more work to be done; I strongly believe that as a team we will achieve our visions.

What can we expect in 2018 for such prominent hotel?

We are working on continuous improvements; we do not want to accept the status quo. We are planning to open an exciting restaurant on the beach with two international concepts at the start of September 2018. Our Food & Beverage experience will be elevated again at InterContinental Doha. We want to maintain our remarkable reputation for offering quality experiences to our guests.

How long have you been in Doha, and have you had previous experience in the Gulf ?

I have been in Doha for five and half years, after spending 10 years in Asia. My journey started in Europe, continued in China, India, and Thailand.

As General Manager of such prominent property such as InterContinental Doha, what has been the most exciting thing you’ve been part of within the property?

It is always important to be constantly evolving our hotel offerings so that we retain our loyal guests and remain at the forefront of Qatar’s hospitality industry. We have added 120 new Club Rooms and Suites with an amazing Club InterContinental Lounge. The new InterContinental Doha Residences with 82 apartments and villas and private beach is an outstanding lifestyle choice. In 2017, we saw the opening of the

22

world’s largest Belgian Cafe, which is now one of the most popular spots in Doha. The luxurious Spa InterContinental with 16 treatment rooms and private indoor pool offers the ultimate in relaxation, wellness, and beauty treatments. The latest addition is the trendy Gemmayze restaurant offering authentic Lebanese cuisine.

The workforce is one of the most important assets in every company, how do you uplift the morale of your coworkers?

If you look at all the changes, which have taken place, to be part of this journey is motivating in itself. I am a fan of driving business and being with a team of inspired and motivated people. It is important to sell a vision to people and deliver what you promise. We have regular conversations to ensure that everyone feels good and we are doing the right thing.

How would you define success?

Success is defined in a period of time and not in the short-term. We are in a challenging environment, and competition is growing. Feedback from guests, our people, hotel owners, and financial returns versus the competition are measures for me to understand where we go and how successful we are.

What are some lessons you’ve learned within the industry that could serve as advice to young and aspiring adults?

Never leave home without a plan. Have a realistic vision and understand the world to make the right decisions. Work hard on your success, as it will not come for free.

And finally, your favourite spot to unwind after a stressful day?

I spend time with my family Antonia, Kim, and Maya. I love to play golf, tennis and be on the Lusail Race Track.

SAMSUNG RECENTLY UNVEILED THE NEWEST MODELS OF THEIR FLAGSHIP GALAXY S SERIES WITH S9 AND S9+. DOES IT LIVE UP TO OUR EXPECTATIONS? TECH SAVVY HASSAN SARAYA GIVES US THE 101 OF THIS NEW MODEL.

J

udging by the looks, the S9 series looks almost identical to the S8 series from the front. However, it is a whole other case once you flip the phone. Aside from the gorgeous new lilac purple colour, the fingerprint sensor now conveniently lies under the camera for an easier reach. In addition, the plus model received an additional lens. In terms of performance, Samsung spared no effort on the internals. Both models carry within a powerful octacore processor with a 4 GB ram on S9, 6 GB ram on S9+, guaranteeing a smooth operation that stands strong for your day-to-day use. And with a built-in storage ranging from 64 to 256 GB, you will be able to store thousands of photos, videos and music on your phone “with an external storage up to 400 GB.” Do not worry about battery life, as S9 supports 12 hours of 4G use, while S9+ boosts 15 hours. This is all fancy talk, but the most important purchase decision-making factor in a smart phone nowadays is the camera. The S9 series promises a reimagined camera, boosting a series of new functions to wow its customers. Samsung is famous for being the best in low light photography. The S8 series has proven its worth with a 12MP

sensor supporting an f/1.7 aperture. This year’s series comes in with the first variable aperture in a smart phone, a variable aperture functions like your eye in different lights. It opens up the most in a low light environment to capture the most light and reflect it in the shot (f/1.5), giving you a more focus on the object. Then narrows down in well-lit surroundings (f/2.4), to provide you with a crisp picture that spreads focus on

various areas. Both models support this lens with an additional telephoto lens on the S9+ for a 2x zoom with a live focus feature that creates a shallow depth of field, similar to portrait mode on iPhone. Even after taking the shot, you can adjust the blur around the focused object. Video capabilities have been improved to accommodate a super slow mode, shooting 960FPS to give you a cinema like slow mode quality.

We use our cameras for different reasons, below is how you can benefit the most from the new Samsung Galaxy S9 series: Live Focus(S9+ only)

Super Slow Mo

Low Light Photography

Fashionista: New professional headshot on the go for your next Instagram post

Fashionista: Now you can make your perfect slow mo hair flip

Fashionista: Flaunt your most fabulous outfit after sunset

Fashionista: Turn a water drop into a cinematic movie

Fashionista: No need for external lights in a dimmed restaurant

Fashionista: Applying full make up on your face, and know where to buy items in the pictures

Fashionista: A dish would look decadent with its ingredients blurred in the back Traveller: Turn into a Nat Geo photographer

Traveller: Birds flying

Traveller: Perfect for a skyline shot in the night or a sunset over the beach

Fashionista: Identify how many calories in your dish Traveller: Translate signs, menus and identify buildings and landmarks

The verdict: The S9 series is worth the hype. It does not replace a DSLR camera, yet poses one of the strongest performing cameras in a smart phone.

CULTURE TALK

ART WITH A NOSTALGIC APPROACH ARTIST BOUTHAYNA ALI ALMUFTAH SHARES HER INSIGHT ON HER ARTISTIC STYLE, CREATIVE PROCESS AND WHAT ART MEANS TO HER. Your pieces are so unique and beautiful – what drove you to become an artist?

Art was always an interest of mine from a very early age. I found great joy in the experimentation process of arts and crafts, mastering new techniques and learning to take them further in my own way. Not knowing it then, art really allowed me to express who I am. I always felt comfortable in an art class, there was no right or wrong, it allowed me to be myself, find my path to discovering my own identity. My educational path through primary, secondary and university led me specifically down a creative direction. I had lots of support from many fellow artist friends and professors that allowed me to gain knowledge within the field, while understanding the different methods and techniques that I began to experiment with.

As an artist, you must be inspired by several artists as well - who inspires your creativity? I am influenced my many artists both regionally and internationally, especially by masters of the Post Expressionist period in American painting post WW2. Studying masters work such as Joan Mitchel, Cy

24

Twombly, Franz Kline, Willam De Kooning, Jackson Pollock and many more, allowed me to understand risk taking in creating Abstract art. Further into my high school and university education I began to learn more about contemporary artists, street artists, and talented photographers such as Henri Cartier Bresson and Edward Weston, which led me into experimenting with artistic compositions in black and white photography. As I matured, I became passionately immersed into artists work from the region, whom I became greatly influenced by in many ways. Iranian artists in particular whose work really captivated me. The study of Arabic typography enabled me to express in multiple ways by

using new techniques. In addition to Persian artists, I am greatly inspired by several Qatari artists, such as Ali Hassan, Yousif Ahmad and Salman Al Malik. I have great respect for Qatari masters in the field of art. Today, a new generation of emerging artists look up to them as mentors.

Most of your pieces are on ink and black & white - why have you decided to stick to that technique?

I have always had a love for monochromatic artwork, black ink and white paper in particular. The love for black ink emerged in middle school as I began learning about Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. I had a love for writing with ink in a world that

How would you describe your artistic style?

My general creative aesthetic is very raw. It has an unrefined look and feel. Fingerprints and smudges are important elements in each piece, as they are what create identity, irregularity, and uniqueness. I like to show my pieces as though they are part of my thinking process. I paint with spontaneity and gestural free flowing strokes, while expressing emotion in each piece. Aesthetics are not the key component here, but the feelings of nostalgia that are evoked. Free flowing, dainty, gestural splashes of ink reflect the poetic aspect in the concepts, while expressing my artistic identity in freedom. This is what I like to call unconscious, spur of the moment art. Art that is felt, not planned, free not rigid, expressive while revealing emotion.

Your approach to art is so peculiar and nostalgic – what is your creative process when you start an art piece?

Photography by Jan Klos

My creative process isn’t very planned, a lot of my research phase develops in parallel to the creation phases. Experimentation is the key component to developing my concepts as it is what allows me to find new ways of communicating ideas. I believe this is key to the viewer of the art, feeling the same nostalgia that I feel, it creates a feeling of seeing through the art into my thoughts, rather than just seeing a final piece in front of them.

Being an artist, what is your favourite artistic place to visit here in Doha? One of my favorite places growing up, and till today, is Seef Al Wakrah. While I realise that may not technically qualify as Doha, it’s only a short distance away to me, having lived very nearby to it most of my life. My father’s family

is from that area, so I grew up very near to the Seef, and back in the day, it was just that, some ruins on the edge of the water. My father loved to drive through and would take us with him every weekend, just to smell the ocean, see the boats, walk on the sand. The way it has been redeveloped today is truly wonderful in my opinion, and very much in keeping with my artistic approach. The original layout, beauty, architecture, was all kept in place, but restored so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. This is what I love most about it, that when my father walks through the small streets today, he knows his way around from when he was a child.

Who inspires you as a woman?

It’s hard to think of just one woman that inspires me, I think there are so many women out there who are inspiring, some in the art world, and some far from it. My mother has always been supportive of me, regardless of her understanding of art, and to me, that is an inspiring presence to have in my life. Sheikha Moza, Sheikha Mayassa and Sheikha Hend are all inspirations, when I look at how much they have done for this country, how they have pushed boundaries and broken barriers, and created opportunities for girls like me to do and achieve their dreams, its truly incredible.

future and my artwork takes me.

According to you, what defines an artist?

I don’t think there is one particular thing that defines an artist, I think that a person defines the art. I believe that there is an artistic child in all of us. It may not be the traditional definition of artist, but everyone has their own skill, their own art, and they define that in their own way. The creativity is what is key, and I think it is very important to make sure that is not lost.

What is your opinion on Doha’s art hub at the moment?

Well as an artist, it’s hard for me to express the words to say how happy I am that Doha has such a great audience, such an understanding of the subject, and so many open minds to the subject of art. It’s honestly not something I saw happening in such a short period of time, and I didn’t think I would ever be lucky enough to be appreciated in the ways that I have today. Safe to say, I have a very high opinion of the art hub in Doha at the moment, and I can only see it getting better.

What are your plans for this year in regards with new pieces/ exhibitions?

It’s hard to say what the future holds. I know this is what I want to do and I truly love it, so I definitely want to keep producing. I hope to have a solo exhibition sometime in the near future and work on some collaborations, as those always boost creativity, working with others can be a great learning experience, and I look forward to seeing where the

favored typing on the computer. This was the beginning of the development of sketchbooks and art journals. This documentation process became an art piece in itself, and was the introduction to the art of Artists Books. The connection is still seen in most of my artwork today. Its sketch like look gives an unfinished aesthetic as if torn out of a notebook. This appreciation for black and white art also expanded into black and white photography. Developing the black and white photos in the dark room was a process I found to be very enjoyable as it allowed me to experiment with a new medium of expression.

TEST DRIVE

WHEELS THAT MAKE A BETTER WORLD QH TOOK A TEST DRIVE WITH HYUNDAI’S LATEST 2018 MODEL. FIND OUT THE SCOOP ON THIS CAR AND WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER SWITCHING, TOO.

I

f you’ve been living in Doha for a while, you would know traffic is stressful and hectic in the mornings and evenings – that said, QH had the wonderful adventure on test driving Hyundai’s very own Hybrid car: The Ioniq. We decided to give the car a whirl and really test its features and if it truly is worth your buck, or not. If you’re a gal, you might also want to hop on this wagon for more info. We started our morning cruising in beautiful and sunny Corniche, and the first thing we could notice was its easiness that it comes when driving the car. The steering wheel is smooth and easy to manoeuver. The brake and acceleration pedals are also smooth and both respond very well when hitting each pedal. As a gal, one important thing we look for is safety, and the beautiful thing about this model is how safe we felt at the helm of such car with absolute control of our next move. Also, the seats are comfortable and placed quite low

26

TEST DRIVE (depending upon your preference), making us feel at ease and stable. The deck is spacious with its controls with easy access and also, the passenger’s seat was spacious for a more comfortable ride. And if that wasn’t enough, being a Hybrid, the car contains two engines: one electric and one petrol – making our world a better and cleaner one. So you must be wondering how does it work? When you come to a complete stop the car automatically switches to electric mode, and when speeding, the car will switch back to its petrol (or use both, depending on the car’s usage). Overall, the switching of vehicle is smooth, seamless and efficient. Also worth noting, when turning the car on, there is no sound whatsoever of its engine – as they said, it truly is a Hybrid car. As we continued our journey, we felt like testing the car’s speed and force, one we managed safely. The car offers a sport mode that will allow you to have more power when necessary and needed; even as a hybrid car, the Ioniq also offers a great reaction on the road. As for the design of the car, it has a sleek look with a sporty twist to it. But don’t be fooled by looks, the car inside offers great technology (with a rear view camera, easy to use and a cruise control!) perfect for gals who are up and running with every day tasks, and also, mums who are constantly on the road. If you wish to upgrade your car’s feature, the Ioniq model also offers a higher option with a sunroof choice, wireless phone charger and blind spot detection. That said, the Hyundai Ioniq includes three models: Ioniq Hybrid, Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid and the Ioniq Full Electric. Whatever your option may be, The Ioniq model is one to consider for maximum efficiency on the road always keeping in mind to make electric cars fulltime.

Style Me Up SPRING HAS FINALLY SPRUNG AND WE GIVE YOU THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT TO WEAR. PLUS, WE GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON ECLECTIC BRAND AAVVA WHERE THE DESIGNERS SHARE WHAT THE BRAND IS ALL ABOUT.

FASHION TALK

AAVVA AND ITS ECLECTIC APPROACH TO FASHION FOUNDED BY DESIGNERS AHMAD AMMAR AND VINCENZO VISCIGLIA, AAVVA IS THE EPITOME OF CHIC & STYLE FOR THE MODERN WOMAN OF TODAY. THE BRAND ALSO KNOWN AS ‘THE ARCHITECTS OF FASHION,’ HAS SET NEW WAVES IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. QH GETS AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE DUO FOR A 101 ON THE BRAND. How did both of you start in fashion, and how did this duo come about? Vincenzo Visciglia: I did my Interior Design from the International Fine Arts in Miami followed by Architecture from the FIU. I have always been keen on my love for creating, exploring and developing what inspired me from a young age. We met in 2011, while working on the same project in Dubai. That project was in our field of engineering. Soon we realized that we both had a vision when it came to fashion. Ahmad Ammar: Yes, upon meeting in Dubai, we strongly felt that we could

30

do something in the field of Fashion especially in a multicultural city like Dubai. In 2011, AAVVA was launched. We knew our fashion line would do well; We both were attracted to fashion; it was either the creativity or just the sheer love for art. I am a civil engineer, but I also studied fashion. I work on engineering projects but run AAVVA simultaneously. I enjoy the design that I share between both things that I do. And I believe that counts.

The ss’18 is inspired by La Vie En Rose, why did you decide to take that hit as an inspiration? V: From the designing to the collection,

our first fashion show with this collection and even the campaign shoots, we were focused on our root idea - a mix of art and music. It’s a mesmerizing tune, so expressive and we wanted to bring out our perception of the inspiration. A: Saying so, we really have to give great attention to every little detail, from the models, to the attitude and vibe of the show, and of course the music! We started preparing months before and to showcase 50+ looks is surely a task, but again the vibe that was created after the show, the love and the support we received is truly amazing. We are very happy. We also wanted our

The collection is a splash of bold colours and patterns, why the option to go with strong designs? A: We use a lot of colour, we believe in the power of colour and how it can evoke feelings, create a vibe and suit a person such to make them glow! V: We use a lot of colour blocks and

geometric prints. We match unusual colours to create something truly unique. We are very upfront about our designs, we take influence from architectural, volumes and silhouette and also, we do ethnic designs. The cultural diversity and our love for diversity shows in the way we design and use colours. To add, we also design for all women and believe in the right dress for the right person, so we try creating and designing keeping in mind and aiming to make our dresses for all women.

What kind of woman does AAVVA designs for? V: The woman of today – women are our role models when it comes to fashion. We create for women who wear the pieces with fierce confidence; and we believe they are our biggest critic and inspiration. A: Fashion is so much more than just a look, an outfit. We take inspiration from our customers who visit us regularly and motivate us. It about diversity and creating something new and different, people usually love it.

You claim to empower women throughout your upbeat vibes and fuel feminism and free forms, how do you think your designs support that? V: Fashion recognizes the power that it has, and we also understand the kind of confidence it can create. We design for women and we try and put our understanding and full attention towards it. Women, all around us, inspire us and almost every time leave us in absolute awe of how much they are capable of, how much they can give, care and just peeping back into our history each time, we find stories and women who did great things. A: Yes, eventually we want our brand to be inspiring. Not just to young, upcoming designers and fellow art enthusiasts but also this is for women, to draw inspiration from, to relate and accept things. Often, we see women not doing certain things because of

what’s been told to them. It’s very likely that they may hold back. AAVVA is bold, AAVVA is expression and freedom. We understand, and we mix. Conservatism is also okay unlike what people think of high fashion. And we understand the women’s thinking. V: That’s also why we use neoprene’s in our designs. The fabric is thick and eliminates the use of spanx and complements the feminine form. It is so good to see our clients happy and enjoy what they wear.

The shoot for the ss’18 campaign is beyond eclectic and vibrant, what was the inspiration behind it? V: The range is inspired by the hit number by French Singer Edith Piaf, “La Vie En Rose”. The collection also carried elements of pop art that were a derivation of our love for the art history! We wanted to show these features in the campaign as well. Honestly, it’s our true perception of the legendary singer, as to when she must have been inspired to create the song “La Vie En Rose.” A: The pieces were created using a mix of tulles, chiffons and shimmering organza. Plaids and broad coloured checks were responsible for the modern renaissance type vibe, with ultra-broad pants and puffy hairstyle added to the historic element. We truly enjoy every bit of art, and this campaign shows it more than ever.

In three words, how would you describe your brand? V: Fresh, creative and unique!

A: Definitely we hope it is inspiring, ontrend and artistic.

And in three words, how would you describe each of your styles? V: Comfortable for sure, unique and flexible. We are very energetic and we adapt to what’s around us. A: As we move around a lot during our day to day, we like to show a bit of ourselves in what we wear. But it has to be comfortable and stylish, of course!

“The woman of today – women are our role models when it comes to fashion. We create for women who wear the pieces with fierce confidence; and we believe they are our biggest critic and inspiration.” 31

YOUSSEF HARZY

ONE OF QATAR’S TOP FASHION INFLUENCERS YOUSSEF HARZY SHARES HIS MANY PASSIONS; PLUS, HE GIVES US THE SCOOP ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A DIGITAL INFLUENCER.

You’re a fashion maven and photography lover, give us the lowdown of who Youssef is: Youssef Harzy is a hungry individual for success and obsessed with art & fashion. I’m a digital influencer from Morocco based in Qatar, I document about men’s fashion & lifestyle. I’m also a photographer since the age of 15.

You have an incredible approach to portrait photography – where did you learn such skills, and who inspired you to become one? Photography is my therapy and I’m so lucky to be alive in an era where you can learn everything from YouTube. I consider myself a self-taught and

32

practice is what helped me develop and improve my skills. I’ve been inspired by two photographers: my grandfather’s photography was primarily my first inspiration as I was amazed by the photos he used to take. And also I was inspired by famous photographer Terry Richardson.

You’ve recently made the jump and live permanently in Doha, being an influencer in the country how have you seen Doha in terms of opportunities? Well, I’m really blessed that I live in this beautiful country because opportunities are everywhere for the taking. I believe that the market has so many sectors where you can find what

you’re looking for, either you’re a food blogger or fashionista, or even a lifestyle influencer.

What are three tips your would give to young and aspiring digital influencers? Loving what you do will drive you to produce amazing content. Constantly posting interesting content will make your following grow. Be yourself and never copy.

Being a fashion lover, how would you describe your style?

I would say, unpredictable! As I love to wear crazy colours and I love to be daring, I’m definitely the only guy you’ll find wearing a pink blazer at a party!

Belt bags are my favourites.

Two things you can’t leave home without?

With this era of going everything digital, not everyone wears a watch, but personally I can’t leave without my watch – it completes my outfit. Also a man’s wallet is an important accessory as well.

As a digital influencer, what are some goals you’ve set for this year?

My first goal is to dominate men’s fashion & lifestyle sector, I also want to start a professional YouTube Channel.

What’s your favourite hotspot to be seen in Doha?

I love The Pearl, I go to every corner; Qanat Quartier, Medina Centrale and Porto Arabia.

Three IG accounts that inspire you the most, and we should also follow? One Dapper Street (@marcelfloruss), The Metro Man (@motiankari) and Rowan Row (@rowanrow).

What has been the best advice you’ve received while being an influencer? “There is no such thing as talent, only hard work.” Follow Youssef @harzyyoussef

BEAUTY TALK

BEAUTY 101

WE ARE PUTTING A STOP TO MYTHS THAT CLAIM TO WORSEN AND TREAT ACNE, FIND OUT WHAT ARE THEY AS OUR BEAUTY EDITOR GIVES YOU THE DEETS FOR A HEALTHIER SKIN.

Coconut Oil

Everyone swears by coconut oil to be an exceptional makeup remover, but also, a fantastic moisturizer – even with breakouts. We say, that is a huge no no in your beauty routine. If you’re acneprone skin, find a suitable makeup remover and moisturizer that will help treat your acne and be gentle with it.

Matte Foundations

We all think a matte foundation will do the trick to cover our acne scars (and some swear to heal acne), and stay put throughout our busy schedules. That may be true, but matte fullcoverage foundations may not be the answer to problematic skin. If you’re looking to cover acne, find a foundation that does not include as much chemicals that could potentially irritate your skin, and also, one that is silicon and parabens free. We recommend trying natural and organic brands.

46

Shea Butter and Tea Tree Oil

Shea butter is known to have impeccable healing properties that mixed with tea tree oil it’s said to have a magical reaction to your hair and skin. But here at QH, we have tried this concoction and while it dries the pimples, you’re still left with a problematic skin.

BEAUTY TALK

Sunscreen can clog your pores

Sunscreen being an essential step into your morning beauty routine, some claim this beauty step may clog your pores and cause chaos on your skin. With a myriad of brands now available on the market, options are endless and suitable for different skin types. Never leave the house without your SPF as this protects your skin from hyperpigmentation and wrinkles!

You’re not washing your face enough

Naturally, you’d think that washing your face twice a day would be the ultimate healer for your oily complexion. Wrong! Over-washing can actually make the problem worse. When washed too much, your skin is stripped from its natural oils, which makes your skin dehydrated overcompensating your skin by producing more oil. This can cause your pores to clog and make the skin worse.

Your Diet Has Nothing to Do With your Acne

This is by far one of the biggest myths ever to exist for acne-prone skin. Your diet and what you put inside your body has a massive impact on your skin. Whatever we put inside our bodies, our skin will only be a reflection of our eating habits.

PRIME RESTAURANT PROMISES NEW AND EXCITING DISHES, BUT WILL IT LIVE TO STEAK CONNOISSEURS’ EXPECTATIONS? QH FINDS OUT.

K

nown to be a bold, dining destination Prime promises the finest selection of cuts, and now, the venue has launched a new menu with succulent and hearty dishes. We visited the stylish and elegant hotspot for a true dining experience. We kicked our evening off with a selection of appetizers, which are not your so typical entrees. We were showered with a delicious beetroot foie gras, with slowly cooked apple and beetroot bites topped up with chocolate oil and cranberry sauce. If you opt for this delicacy, we recommend mixing all ingredients on the plate for a powerful explosion of flavours in your mouth. And for the sea lovers, we’ve got your covered, we gave the crab & sweet pea panna cotta a go with also a soy and peach dashi sorbet and lemon and soya gel. This dish in particular holds a strong mix flavour, which we highly recommend to try, perfect for two. And last but not least our last appetizer, which left us over the moon, was a fine selection of short ribs slowly cooked for over 36 hours; perfectly tender, easy to bite and with a taste like no other. Our favourite so far. As our evening progressed, the venue got busier by the minute, creating great atmosphere oozing elegance for those who seek an evening with a little bit of sparkle. And being one of Doha’s steak hotspots, it comes as no surprise the venue delivers more than just fine dining. Said that, our main course proves how Prime delivers what they say they know best: exquisite taste. We ordered their triple cooked crispy lamb ribs – no, you didn’t read that wrong, triple! The lambs are beyond tender with an Asian soya glaze, garlic confit and homemade chips. The lamb ribs are first boiled, then braised for 3hrs and ending with a crispy fry. And boy, were they phenomenal – we say this dish is a must-try. If you’re looking to enjoy with family and friends, or a special evening with your better half, QH recommends this foodie place for a fantastic dining experience where not only your cuisine expectations will be surpassed, but also, service and ambience.

midst the tall buildings of the West Bay area lays a little vibrant hidden gem, Abajour. The colorful and simple set up of this place gives you the true feeling of street-food vibes in the tight alleys of Beirut. The packed environment in the early morning mixed with the smell of the fresh bread baking makes this place the perfect spot for an early Friday breakfast. I was impressed with the excellent selection of authentic dishes available on the menu. The freshness of the ingredients combined with the right level of spices gave their dishes an edge over other Lebanese restaurants that I have tried. To top that, they provide immaculate service in the restaurant despite the fact that it is jam-packed on Friday mornings! Combining all those factors together, I believe that Abajour is a prime location for authentic Lebanese cuisine in Doha that is absolutely underrated. Here are my recommended dishes from their menu, ENJOY!

A

meal at Zaffran Dining Experience is truly an allencompassing experience. Between the explosions of flavour and the constantly evolving menus, you can guarantee a meal to remember. Starting March and ending in May, the restaurant will be featuring select dishes curated by passionate foodies in Qatar. These foodies vary from countless nationality backgrounds and have each put forth their own dishes throughout the Masterchef competition. After tirelessly testing the dishes, winners were chosen and their meals are currently featured on the menu after a round of Indian or fun twists enforced by the restaurant. We couldn’t wait to test out these carefully curated dishes and they certainly did not disappoint. The menu features fun dishes like “Who Ate My Lamb Chops” by Influencer @ moawesomesauce and a special set menu of dishes by @lady_swera. The options are truly endless. This entirely new menu comes with such a wide range of innovative dishes that you just cannot know where to begin. Three dishes definitely did stand out amongst the rest, and you need to try them ASAP. I have to applaud the sheer thought to create a butter chicken burrito – now that is revolutionary. To start the meal off, I’d highly recommend the Butter Chicken Burrito and Masala Pepper Chicken Taco created by Miss. Dema Abou

Samhadaneh & Miss. Jishma Eracham Veettil. Served with a mango salsa, the combo of these two is incomparable, possibly the most delicious appetizer I have ever experienced. I’ll admit, I was hesitant when I heard that this next dish involved quail eggs but I am so glad I went for it anyway. The Murgh Musallam aka Masala Roasted Chicken inspired by Miss. Amatul Azeem Asra is simply delicious. The richness of the sauce complemented by the chicken wrapped egg is just one of a kind. To finish off the delectable delight of

a dining experience, we sealed the deal with a “OOPS! Who Broke the Benofee Pie,” inspired by Mrs. Mehnaz Sayed. The name may be comical, but its taste was something I took quite seriously. Taking a fun twist on the classic banoffee pie, this fun broken pastry base makes for an unusual– while extremely delicious – eating experience. The entire menu is truly one-of-a kind, which I encourage everyone to come and experience a true culinary journey. So what are you waiting for? Mark your calendars before it ends in May.

ACTIVE MIND

STOP FEELING GUILTY ABOUT RELAXING ARE YOU FEELING YOU’VE BEING PULLED IN 10 DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS ALL AT ONCE? IT’S TIME TO STOP AND ANALYZE ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR DOWNTIME AS JEN MUELLER GIVES US THE INSIGHT.

M

y days start early and are full of activity, whether it’s working, getting my four kids to and from where they need to be, or squeezing in daily chores and errands. Most of the time, I like it that way. I prefer to be on the go instead of sitting at home with nothing to do, but it has gotten to the point where I find it hard to remember how to really relax. I know I’m not alone. When I ask moms at school, “How are things?” the answer I

64

typically get is, “You know, busy as ever!” Life can be really stressful when you’re trying to juggle commitments to family, friends and work. Often, the commitment to yourself takes a backseat—but does it always have to be this way? Yes, a lot of us have a lot going on. Sometimes I’m embarrassed by my inability to balance downtime for myself and work time for everyone else around me. It goes without saying that I’m busy juggling four young children, yet,

there are people in my life (and probably yours, too) who seem equally busy and continue taking on more and more even though they seem to have reached their limit long ago. They aren’t afraid to share the constant and suffocating stresses in their daily lives; some appear to wear their busyness as a badge of honor, constantly talking about how frazzled and stressed out they are. Lack of downtime leaves me feeling depleted, both physically and mentally.

Implications of Not Taking Downtime

In addition to making you feel like you’re constantly being pulled in 10 different directions at once—believe me, I’ve been there—there are also physical and mental health issues that can arise from no downtime. Prolonged periods of too much stress affects your hormones, increasing the level of cortisol—also known as the “stress hormone”—and decreasing the level of serotonin and dopamine in your body. These hormonal changes have been linked to depression in some people. Increased levels of cortisol can also affect your appetite, potentially leading to weight gain. Constant stress can also take a toll on your heart. Whether the stress is coming from work, family life, financial issues or other places, providing no outlet for those negative feelings can increase your risk of a heart attack. Taking a time-out now and then, whether it’s a quick nap or a moment of meditation, gives your brain a chance to refresh and replenish. It improves productivity, creativity, increases your attention span and improves memory. A relaxed state increases blood flow to the brain and shifts brain waves from a beta (alert) to alpha (relaxed) rhythm. This state helps decrease anxiety, stress and worry in the body.

Getting Comfortable with Relaxing

Knowing that prolonged periods of stress with no relief isn’t good for your health, how do you get comfortable with taking downtime? Why is it so difficult to give ourselves permission to relax? Take a look at the tasks you have on your plate today. Can every single thing on that list really not wait? Are there any tasks you can delegate to others in order to free up small amounts of time for yourself? There is always going to be one more load of laundry to do or one more volunteer sign-up sheet, but sometimes it’s okay to decide to put yourself first. If you feel like it’s important to stay too busy because of others’ perceptions, ask yourself why. Wouldn’t you rather people see you as a friend who is present and can take time to listen, or a patient

ACTIVE MIND

To avoid those feelings of regret, I’m proactively taking baby steps to become less frantic and more present now so that I can enjoy (or at least calmly manage) the craziness that surrounds me. Are you ready to do the same?

“Prolonged periods of too much stress affects your hormones, increasing the level of cortisol—also known as the “stress hormone”—and decreasing the level of serotonin and dopamine in your body.” parent who will spontaneously play dress-up or bake a batch of cookies with the kids? Even though it’s not always possible to stop what you’re doing and take time for more low-key activities, make that effort every now and then to keep yourself grounded and present in your life. Those around me don’t envy my busyness—most of the time, they probably think I’m a crazy lady who just takes on too much.

HOW TO SPEND YOUR ME-TIME MOMENTS Visualize. Picture yourself in a calm and peaceful place, perhaps at the beach or on top of a mountain. Use this imagery to mentally transport yourself to a place of relaxation.

Meditate. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing for a few minutes. It’s hard not to let your mind wander at first, but the more you do it, the easier you’ll find it is to focus on relaxing.

Try aromatherapy. If scents are your thing, this might be right up your alley. Certain scents promote relaxation in the body, so surrounding yourself with them diffused into the air can create a more calming environment.

Breathe deeply. Deep breathing, also referred to as belly breathing, is easy to learn and can be done anytime, anywhere. Ever notice when you get stressed out you tend to breathe faster? Slow down your breathing and feel the tension release from your body.

Progressively relax your muscles. After a hard day, it’s common for people to feel aches in the shoulders and neck due to tension or poor posture. This technique tenses muscles as you breathe in and relaxes them as you breathe out, alleviating some of that stress. It’s a great way to work out the kinks from your entire body. Even small changes can make a big difference in the quality of your life. Remember that learning to relax is a skill, so your ability to focus and make the most of your downtime will improve with practice. If one technique doesn’t work for you, try another until you find something that gives you the recharge we all need. Eating healthy is also extremely fashionable in the modern day, with new diets being developed every few months. And with the growing popularity of healthy lifestyles and all round wellness, comes the need to create new exciting ways to achieve fitness goals and the ideal body type. The perceived monotony of a daily 05h00 or 17h00 gym routine is no longer enough to keep even the most dedicated of gym bunnies hooked. Hence the development of the many fitness studios that offer alternative ways to achieve results in a more dynamic way that is better suited to the individual’s ideal workout environment. 20 TIPS TO EAT HEALTHY WHETHER YOU’RE OVERWORKED OR JUST PLAIN OVERSTRESSED, TIME IS VALUABLE TO ALL OF US, SAYS TANYA JOLLIFFE, HEALTHY AND EATING EXPERT WHO GIVES US THE SCOOP ON HOW TO STAY HEALTHY AT ALL TIMES.

When making a lifestyle change, it can easily seem overwhelming to include new habits like exercise and healthy eating into your jam-packed days. Between everything else you’ve got going on, how are you also supposed to find time to prepare healthy meals and read all those labels in the grocery store? These tips will help you spend even less time in the grocery store, emerge with healthy ingredients, and cook diet-friendly meals in minutes, whether you’re serving one, two or ten.

Time-Saving Grocery Shopping

Keeping a grocery list may seem like a

68

waste of time in the moment, but it will actually save you time while shopping. While any old list is better than none, here are some tips that will turn your list into time well spent. 1. Keep a running list One of the best places to keep your grocery list is in the kitchen—on the fridge, on a bulletin or wipe board, or even on the pantry door. As you run out of items, add them to the list so you don’t have to remember them later. Then when you’re ready to shop, you’ll have a complete shopping list ready to go with you.

2. Organize your list You can get through the store quickly if you organize your list in the same order that you typically navigate the grocery store. If you always start in the produce section, then start your list with these foods. If you hit the dairy section last, then add those foods to the bottom of the list. By listing items in order of the store layout, you can avoid retracing your steps to pick up things you missed. 3. Shop during “off” hours and days You can usually get in and out of the store more quickly if you shop between

and spend extra money overall. Try shopping after a meal or a small snack to stay focused and on track.

4. Avoid shopping when you are hungry Studies show that when hungry people shop, they are more likely to purchase items that aren’t on their lists. When your belly is growling, you’re more likely to stray off of your list, notice other foods that you didn’t come in to get,

5. Use caution with single-servings and bulk items Many times when you shop, the choice of individual or bulk sizes means the difference between time and money. Individual serving items (such as yogurt, instant oatmeal, 100-calorie packs, frozen entrees, etc.) and pre-

cut foods (chopped veggies and fruits, whether frozen or fresh) tend to be more expensive than larger packages or bulk quantities, but they will save you time and help with portion control. Getting healthy doesn’t have to be timeconsuming or expensive. With a little planning and a few meal ideas, you can easily find the time to make nutritious, home-cooked meals that you and your family will love.

HEALTHY MEALS IN MINUTES Now that you have the ingredients on your list, here are some quick and healthy cooking ideas. These meals pack fiber, veggies and protein into a quick-cooking (and flavorful) meal. Whether you’re cooking for one or a family of four, you can adapt the quantities of ingredients to suit you. •

Lightly sauté fresh vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, peppers and eggplant and simmer with spaghetti sauce.

Top frozen pizza with extra tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, broccoli and onions.

Add diced tomatoes, shredded carrots, raisins and pine nuts to quick-cooking brown rice or couscous. Season with a dash of balsamic vinegar.

Add canned and rinsed black-eyed peas, thawed and drained okra, diced tomato and sliced green onion to reduced-sodium tomato soup.

Stir-fry chopped vegetables and serve with rice and beans.

For breakfast, top a cinnamon raisin bagel with light cream cheese and apple slices.

Heat fat-free refried beans in the microwave. Add veggies and salsa and roll the mixture in a tortilla.

Add frozen corn, steamed and diced green and red bell peppers and cilantro to a can of reduced-sodium black bean soup.

Stir-fry cooked rice, chopped vegetables and leftover meat with low-sodium soy sauce.

Add grapes, chopped celery, walnuts and dried cherries or golden raisins to prewashed salad greens; toss with your favorite low-fat dressing.

In the morning, place chicken, vegetables, broth and spices to your liking into the Crockpot to come home to a wonderful stew that evening.

Top a baked potato with nonfat yogurt, barbeque sauce, low-fat cottage cheese, chives, sautéed onions and vegetables or chili for a super spud!

Add canned or fresh fruit to muffins, quick breads, pancake batter, or cold cereal.

Puree fruit and top your pancakes, waffles, oatmeal or roasted chicken.

Marinate raw or cooked veggies in a non-fat Italian dressing for a quick, cold salad.

ehind the scenes of last month’s Qatar International Food Festival was a team of volunteers quietly working late into the night. After the festival goers began to trickle back home and the bright lights began to fade, the team aptly named “Food Heroes” set to work. Their mission was to collect surplus food from the festival stalls, vendors and outlets to repackage and redistribute to those in need throughout Doha.

concern that surplus food has on the environment and community. Globally, over one third of the world’s food (approximately 1.7 billion tons) is dumped annually into trash cans or landfills contributing to carbon gas emissions and environmental damage. Added to this, over 800 million people are starving throughout the world every day. Wa’hab Director of Communications and Marketing, Kim Wyatt adds, “Food wastage is wreaking havoc on our

The volunteers work for a local startup named Wa’hab which translated into Arabic means “to give.” Wa’hab is Qatar’s first company that aims to reduce, recycle and re-use surplus food. This year’s most popular food festival highlighted the growing awareness and

planet and society. It’s an issue faced throughout the world and it’s an issue here in Qatar. With one of the highest rates of food wastage in the region, Wa’hab felt an urgent need to address the issue. We’ve been fortunate enough to have high profile companies such as the Qatar Tourism Authority collaborate with us. People from all walks of society are concerned, and they want to help out.“ So how does Wa’hab reduce food wastage? Says Kim Wyatt, “Wa’hab connects the food and beverage industry with local charities and the community. We identify areas of surplus food and redistribute through various methods – either giving to people in need via charities or by creating compost using sustainable methods for use in the local agricultural sector. We don’t want any food to go to waste and we know a lot of people feel the same.” At the core of Wahab’s mission is community service. Originally set up by founder, Wardha Mamukoya to help the less fortunate of society, volunteers provide the backbone of the company and are vital in activities such as the recent Qatar International Food Festival. Wa’hab Operations Director, Dr. Ramees Kakkodan agrees “Volunteers are the most important part of Wa’hab. We even rebranded our logo to emphasize the importance of our volunteers whom we have named Food Heroes”. During community efforts, volunteers help to collect food - including good quality meals plus dried and nonperishable items from food and beverage outlets throughout Doha. The food is then repackaged and delivered to partners for redistribution. So why the name Food Hero? Kim Wyatt says, “Our volunteers give up valuable time to assist us. They have personal responsibilities such as jobs or families, yet they dedicate their nights or weekends to our cause.

With a growing number of volunteers from all walks of life, Wa’hab is expanding community efforts throughout Doha. As the message of reducing food wastage becomes more known, Food Heroes such as Wa’hab volunteer, food blogger Dionne Lobo Marks, sees the need for the new generation to become more active in community projects. As Dionne says, “Getting children involved is a great way to instill the values of sharing and giving to others”. Kim Wyatt adds, “Volunteering is a great way for many people to connect to others and form a social bond. It’s rewarding in so many ways and many volunteers love giving to the community and meeting other likeminded people.” What is the future for Wa’hab and the Food Heroes? Recently, Wa’hab became a winner of the Qatar Business and Incubation Centre (QBIC) Lean StartUp program which aims to foster and promote innovative entrepreneurial ideas in Qatar. With this support, Wa’hab is hoping to form more working partnerships from the food & beverage industry, develop Corporate Social Responsibility Campaigns and inform the community of ways in which to become active in reducing food wastage. Kim Wyatt adds, “We want to promote and celebrate success

stories and collaborations within our community. We want to highlight the issue of food wastage and bring about change. At the end of the day we want to achieve three things – we want to help save our planet, we want to feed people and we want to create a better environment for future generations. We have a lot of work to do!” TIPS FOR REDUCING FOOD WASTAGE AT HOME •

Use leftover food in soups, stews and curries

Freeze fruit and veggies

Shop smart - Create a shopping list before you go to the store

Don’t go shopping on an empty stomach

Understand expiration dates on food packaging

Turn food wastage into compost

Reduce food portions at meal times

Store food appropriately to extend shelf life

Without them we couldn’t complete our work. We wanted to acknowledge their assistance and give them a fitting title.” For Wa’hab Executive Director Reem Al-Muftah, joining Wa’hab was a great opportunity to fulfill her passion for working with the local community, “I saw Wahab on social media and wanted to get involved because it’s a great initiative for Qatar. I initially started as a volunteer and then I was asked to join the company. I love volunteer work as it’s a very direct way of helping our community and our country. It’s critical for Qatar to reduce food wastage and become more environmentally sustainable – it’s part of our National Vision for 2030. As a community we should all work together to reach that goal.”

Also, the modern and yet elegant property is connected to Doha’s favourite mall City Center Mall and sits next to DECC.

TAKE A PEAK INTO MY ROOM

QH had the luxury to stay at one of their twin rooms with a spacious view of West Bay and the ever so colourful Corniche. Each bed was comfortable, spacious and delicious to sleep in after grueling hours. The bathroom was modern with a twist of elegant touches, spacious shower, and with an array of essentials (one we loved) such as: toothbrush, hair shampoo, conditioner, shaving kit, body lotion, mouthwash, and other extras. We found this extra touch to be so vital for anyone who is on a business trip, or even layovers. So that was a plus. And another huge plus was the option of a good Wifi, and when we mean ‘good,’ we meant really good. We were happy to be connected at all times, perfect to catch up with an email or two.

Unwind with upbeat tunes at Boston’s

COME DINE WITH ME

The hotel houses exceptional dining venues all with different purposes for you to choose from. If you’re into lively evenings, pack the fun at Boston’s with a casual dining vibe, bar atmosphere, and upbeat tunes. And because we wanted a proper sitdown dinner and an exciting culinary journey, we dined at the fantastic Teatro restaurant. This venue not only offers one cuisine option, but up to four: Thai, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian! And if that wasn’t enough, the view from the restaurant is also mesmerizing with an overview of West Bay during night. Truly a must-visit. At Teatro we decided to mix cuisines (just because we can), and went for Salmon sashimi, and a sushi roll; exquisite, fresh and the perfect amount to start our culinary journey. Later, we jumped into the Italian cuisine and opted for a delicious and thin (just how we love it) Margherita pizza. Enough for two, it was… mamma mia! We also went for the Funghi Risotto, also perfect for two if you wish to share. And as our evening progressed, we sealed the deal with a chocolate soufflé – and boy was that the best soufflé in town! QH approved. It was moist, soft and with the right amount of chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream on the side. Teatro was one of a kind with a rich décor, candlelight ambience and an exceptional culinary journey. And for the next day, we had a lovely International breakfast at Olive Oil, where choices are endless if you’re into brekkie, too. From chocolate waffles to beef bacon and cold appetizers – it was truly a breakfast for champions. Teatro is a must-visit venue for a fanulous culinary experience

This is without a doubt the ultimate in luxury camping, complete with a private butler service, chandeliers, silverware, crystal, ensuite flush W.C. and comfortable beds with fluffy duvets! From the moment you land at the airstrip you’ll be in awe; that feeling only gets better. For starters, the dreamy breakfasts in the bush as you’re looking at the ongoing migration, whilst listening to a symphony of birds. The hand-washed clothes they bring back to your tent within the day, with handwritten notes that’ll make you smile. The hot water bottles they put under your blanket at night to keep your feet warm. 3

The Experience

From the bedroom at &BEYOND Klein’s Camp , you’ll hear at least 7 species of birds singing every morning. It’s like a melody set to jump-start your day as you’re having tea, while looking at the light from the sky reflecting through mountains and hills, casting whimsical shadows akin to a theatrical show. This sanctuary is a dream sequence from one of your favorite movies, reimagined. No amount of words and photographs can justify the bliss and serenity one will feel when at Klein’s Camp. Guests can enjoy the wilderness and the abundance of wildlife all from the excitement of living under canvas with the heartbeat of Africa at close proximity. The camps are mobile and move periodically in tandem with the game to maximize the game viewing. An unrivalled and authentic luxury tented experience. Absolutely, a must experience.

4

Special Touches

What stands out above all is the exclusivity of the game drives. The number of vehicles in the entire vastness is purposefully limited, therefore making every encounter with the wild rather personal and very magical. Another stand out feature of &BEYOND, is the staff, and notably, they become like family. From the moment I arrived, I felt this familiar warmth from everyone’s smile that complimented the hand-crafted meals, the butler service, the endless snacks and tea times, to the surprise bonfire in the bush with our favorite tailored drinks to celebrate the elephants we saw, making the tangerine sunset a perfect backdrop to our last day. Dear Klein’s Camp team, you guys made all of our experiences with &BEYOND seem like a painting. When you get to the camp, look for Penny, she’ll make sure everything’s stitched to perfection. If you’re lucky, you’ll get Ellie as your butler and Rabin as your ranger. You can thank me later.

5

Lucas Raven’s Must-Do’s: Twice daily game drives

At &BEYOND, game drives are tailored to suit your preference, with a choice between shorter, twice-daily drives or one full-day game drive, with a stop for a picnic lunch. I most certainly recommend the twice-daily, as so not to miss out on a single thing! Also this way, you will get to encounter a lot more herds.

Ballooning Safari

This is an extraordinary opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Serengeti National Park from a bird’s eye-view. Gently bob through the air, letting your fascination grow as your eyes sweep over the plains below. The drama of seeing the herds in full sight as they meander across the plain is simply breathtaking from such perspective. The camp itself is a tasteful adventure worthy of our travel. Book your dream safari holiday now! For more adventures and travel highlights follow Lucas at @followtheraven

WANDERLUST DINING

PINK PERFECT DINING

WALKING ALONG PARK LANE, YOU CANNOT BUT STOP AND MARVEL AT THE LITTLE CUTE CAFÉ SITUATED ON THE CORNER. ÉLAN CAFÉ IS AS ENTHRALLING IN BOTH DÉCOR AND MENU.

80

WANDERLUST DINING Distinctive, stylish, and very ‘Instagram-able’, Élan, has fast become one the mustvisit cafés in London. You may actually so much more time admiring the interiors, floral arrangement and vintage haul, that you’ll forget that you are there to dine. But on seeing the vast display of desserts as you walk in, quickly ensure to bring your attention to their menu offering.

The Lowdown

Elegant and modern, Élan is very on trend and has managed to take the taste-levels to a whole new level. Everything at Élan seems to be at its very best: the food, the décor, the crockery, and the coffee. Literally everything; Élan has created London’s finest coffee destination.

The Menu

Let’s talk about the food. Élan dishes up breakfasts, brunches, lunches, cake and coffee in a floral-bathed paradise. Breakfast doesn’t come anymore colourful and wholesome than what the guys at Élan magic up. Think chia porridge with cashew milk and blueberry and maple toppings, and various fruit bowls. If you are after something a bit lighter and quicker to-go, then the basket of rainbow coloured croissants that are stuffed with raspberry jam, pistachio cream, and Nutella are perfect way to start the day. Savoury croissants are aslo offered, such as beef bresola with the beetroot hummus adding a nice tartness to the savouriness of the beef. For other savoury daytime meals, their menu is infused by Middle Eastern flavours – flatbreads with grilled pepper and chicken, aubergine and harissa. This actually comes as no surprise, as the majority of the café’s customers are from that region and so the menu has been tailored fittingly. And on that note, it is worth mentioning that Élan’s menu is all halal, with a strong variety of vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options. The café is known for its artisan coffee and without compromise Élan ensures that their Alternative Latte’ selection is both delicious as well as with an elegant modern twist. As in the case of many of Élan’s customers, the one problem that you may face is the fact that the food served is just too pretty to eat!

Filled with lots of florally decorated walls, marble tables and pastel bikes, this definitely has to be one of London’s most Insta-worthy café. Pricing wise, you may find that the bill comes in a tad hefty - approximately £24 per person for a casual meal, however literally opposite Hyde Park, the location of the café may be a significant player to the menu prices. This is Park Lane after all! A small piece of advice: be prepared to queue and wait for a table. Élan Café is constantly booming with lots of celebrities, bloggers and tourists attendees paying a visit to this beautiful café. So it may be wise not to turn up extremely hungry. Therefore, if you can stomach the wait, then it will be most certainly worth it! Even if it is just so you did it ‘for the gram’.
