FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dear friends, Greetings once again, and my warmest welcome to you all. Another year has passed, and we find ourselves looking forward with great expectation to the imminent arrival of 2017. It has been a year of great prosperity, and we are immensely fortunate to have the continued wisdom and exemplary guidance of our esteemed Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to guide us forward. Under his meritorious leadership we have secured the benefits of immeasurable economic gain and trade partnerships, and with his diplomatic endeavors had our profile elevated to the highest levels. His commitment, foresight and prowess mean that we are well on our way to realizing our goals for our National Vision 2030. For this we are truly blessed. Furthermore, a special day will soon be upon us, and we shall all unite in celebration this December 18 for Qatar National Day. We at AHB Group stand together proud and honored to continue to perform our duty for our beloved country. Let us come together as a nation and meditate on what it means to have our unique cultural heritage and traditions. We commemorate the memory of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani, the founder of our glorious Qatar. Under his leadership all those years ago, Qatar began its journey towards becoming a single unified and independent entity, and emerged as a coherent and stable nation. I hope you will find something within the pages of our December issue that intrigues, informs, delights and entertains. We have an excellent selection of festive round-ups and recommendations from our QH team to see you through the final days of 2016 in style. We’ve checked out the latest dining experience at Coral, and are keen to share our opinion with you, as well as giving you the low-down on the Italian Super Cup, to name just a few. NATIONAL DAY SPECIAL

Words by Jennifer Ortuoste Photography by Jessie Palanca

Qatar National Day is celebrated every December 18, and commemorates the country’s unification in 1878. Discover the activities and events that take place on this national public holiday. 12

Q

atar National Day is also known as Founder’s Day, after Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed al Thani, who worked ceaselessly to unite the various tribes of the area to build the modern Qatar. Celebrated since 2007 as a public holiday, QND is an opportunity to celebrate the revered Sheikh’s legacy as well as the unique history and heritage of the Qatari people. The festivities keep their culture and traditions vibrant and

are an immense source of national pride to Qataris everywhere. The excitement builds in the weeks leading to the day itself, with nationals expressing their joy by decorating their vehicles and displaying images of the beloved Emir Tamim bin Hamad al Thani. Over the years, the celebration has become bigger and better. Heritage-themed events take

place in the Katara Cultural Village, such as fireworks shows, music shows, and educational workshops. A classic car show is also held, displaying antique vehicles once owned by government officials. Another QND event is the Darb al-Saai – “The Route of the Messenger”. This happens at Al Sadd in Doha, and the festivities reflect aspects of Qatari history and heritage. Featured are camel and horse riding, falconry, shooting, military displays, and

celebrations filled with traditional food, art, music, and clothing. At Al Maqtar, a collection of tents depict Bedouin life; Qatari food is prepared, rugs are sewn, and coffee and snacks are served to visitors. At Al Beda, there are photos and information on boats, fishermen, pearl divers, and other aspects of Qatar’s rich maritime heritage. The family-oriented National Day parade is a favourite attraction that draws thousands of

attendees. Officials and personnel from the Armed Forces, Internal Security Force, Ministry of the Interior, and Amiri Guards, as well as other participants, march along the Doha Corniche as jets and helicopters fly overhead in spectacular aerial displays. Camel-mounted military personnel make an impressive sight while flag-waving spectators cheer. The highlight of the parade is an appearance by the Emir. QH joins the country its pride and excitement and wishes one and all a Happy National Day! n

ENTERTAINMENT Words by Jan Janssen Interview and selected images courtesy of Viva Press

In the course of a brilliant career that includes an Oscar triumph for Monster's Ball, a stint in The X-Men films, and a stunning turn as the ultimate Bond girl in Die Another Day, Halle Berry has made her mark in a wide variety of roles.

R

ecently she starred in the CBS sci-fi series Extant and completed work on Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the sequel to the hugely successful spy spoof starring Colin Firth. Next up for her is KIDNAP, a taut drama where Berry plays a mother determined to stop at nothing in order to rescue her kidnapped daughter. Anyone who has seen the actress play wronged women in the past will appreciate how convincing she is in a film that sees her transform into a one-woman vigilante bent on saving her child. With Kidnap marking her first feature film since the box-office blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past, in which she reprised her role as Storm, Berry is hoping to recapture some of the massive recognition that followed her winning the Oscar Award for Monster's Ball in 2002. It was the first time that a black woman had won the best actress prize yet she fell victim to the so-called Oscar curse that has seen many actors fail to find roles that would sustain their moment in the sun. QH: How has winning an Oscar changed your life? HB: Winning the Oscar was certainly the crowning achievement of my career and a lot of good has come from it. It was a role that gave me the kind of recognition where the industry began to take me seriously as an actress, or at least more seriously. But there is a sort of Oscar curse where the pressure comes to you to duplicate that success and continue to find Oscar-worthy roles... In a way it’s impossible to live up to that pressure but I feel that a film like Things We Lost in the Fire [2007] was as good as anything else I've done. Even though it didn’t find as big an audience as I had hoped it would, it was still a film that I’m very proud of and I want to continue to find great projects like that.

Halle Berry: Happy And Healthy At 50 18

Berry's life took another dramatic turn in 2008 when she gave birth to her first child, Nahla, now 8. Halle had waited so long to start a family that she decided to take three years off from the film business to raise her daughter. And then, to her astonishment, Berry found herself pregnant again at age 47 while married to French actor Oliver Martinez and gave birth to a son, Maceo-Robert, now 3, in October 2013. QH: How has being a mother affected your career?

HB: Being a mom puts things into perspective and what we take and we share in life. It’s a matter of juggling and finding what comes natural. Being a mother is probably the most important thing in my life... Career is important, but nothing really supersedes my role as a mother... I know how hard my mother worked and how she was so instrumental in helping me realise my dreams, and I want to be the same kind of mother to my children. QH: Do you feel that you’ve been successful in getting your career back on track, after taking time off to start a family? HB: Everything's pretty good. I feel I'm getting back to where I want to be in terms of the work I'm getting to do now. I'm also feeling good about dividing my time between looking after my children who are my number one priority in life and going forward in my career. But juggling those responsibilities is something all working mothers go through and my own mother set a very good example for me. I have it much easier than she had when she was raising me.

that landed the latter in the hospital with a black eye and cracked ribs. That incident made headlines all over the world and was another personal trauma that overshadowed her acting work. Halle has never taken anything in life for granted, however. The daughter of a black father and white mother, she grew up feeling like an outsider. Even after her acting career took off, she suffered a series of bad romances that began with a marriage (her first) to baseball star David Justice, followed by an abusive relationship with now-forgotten musician Eric Benet. Berry was raised in Cleveland, Ohio by her mother, a psychiatric nurse, after her parents' divorce when she was four years old. Since then she has had no contact with her father, whom she described as a violent man, particularly towards her mother. Halle is still sensitive to having grown up without a positive male presence in her life which she suggests might well have left some psychic scars that contributed to her numerous failed relationships. QH: What was it like for you growing up?

I also know that I've got to be happy with who I am in order to be the best possible mother that I can be. After taking some years off to raise my daughter, I know that I need to work to express myself and I feel like it's coming together for me. Berry is currently in the process of rebuilding her personal life after last year's split from Martinez, her third husband. Fortunately, the end of their marriage has been free of the acrimony that followed her tumultuous 2011 separation from French Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. Not only did Berry and Aubry wage a bitter custody battle over their daughter Nahla, but the then-new man in her life, Martinez, a former boxer, found himself in a November 2012 Thanksgiving Day fistfight with Aubry at Berry's West Hollywood home

HB: I've always felt like life is a challenge. I spent my entire adolescence wanting to be the best at everything despite a lot of obstacles that had been thrown my way. My mother taught me that you need to fight to realise your dreams, and I've never doubted that advice. Although some people will say it’s a cliché, I think not having had a father when I was growing up affect me negatively because I didn’t have a good male role model to follow. It’s hard to admit that you’ve made the wrong choices and gone through a lot of grief because of that. I was pretty badly affected when my father left my mother when I was young. It's impossible to know otherwise, but I'm sure I would have had a better

perspective on men and relationships if I had had a father to grow up with... But I see things much more clearly now. Berry champions the benefits of psychological counseling throughout her life as a healthy way of dealing with personal issues that have nagged at her for many years. QH: How have you managed to cope with all these challenges? HB: I’ve always done therapy on an as-needed basis since I was 10 years old. My father was an alcoholic, and a very abusive one. My mother knew the value of providing me an outlet—an unbiased person to talk to, to help me manage my feelings and emotions. So, I’ve done (therapy) throughout my life. If I feel like I need to, I do meditation. I find that our mind is really powerful. What we think and what our thoughts are can really control our reality—how we look at things. Berry attended a nearly all-white public school in Bedford, a middle-class suburb of Cleveland, and had to deal with racist taunts and discrimination for most of her childhood while feeling similarly ostracised by her own African-American community. Instead of giving in to the self-doubt and feelings of isolation that such rejection often engenders in teenagers, Halle decided that she was going to prove herself to the world and soon she was on her way to becoming a massive overachiever. In addition to being elected senior class president and serving as editor of her high school newspaper, she was also chosen to be her school's head cheerleader while excelling at gymnastics. Berry was also evolving into a stunningly beautiful young woman and would go on to become Miss Teen Ohio and Miss Teen America (at age 17) before finishing as runner-up in the Miss USA beauty pageant.

19

ENTERTAINMENT QH: What was your motivation in being so driven? Why did you push yourself so hard? HB: I loved being able to work hard and show what I could accomplish. My mother was always there to inspire me and encourage me and I wanted to make her proud and also prove to myself that I could succeed at anything I put my mind to. Although she toyed with the idea of becoming a psychiatrist as per her mother's training in the field, Berry decided to pursue a degree in broadcast journalism in university with the aim of becoming a TV reporter. But her success as a beauty pageant competitor drew the attention of a talent scout who encouraged her to move to New York and try her luck at acting. QH: Had acting always been a dream of yours? HB: I never thought about acting when I was modelling and going up for beauty pageants. I was never one of those girls who dreamed of being an actor. It was only when my then-manager, who later became my producing partner, asked me to go to New York for an audition that got me into acting. Although I didn’t get the job I went up for, he made me do some monologues and that’s when he thought I had some talent and that’s what encouraged me to become an actor. My first big acting job was Living Dolls [a TV series] which moved me out to Los Angeles and that really awakened me to the thought that I could make my living as an actor and when I got my first paycheck I thought that this was real. Then I did [the film] Jungle Fever [1991] and the industry took me seriously after that and I shed the beauty queen/model image after that. Amid the ups-and-downs in her personal life and in her Hollywood career, Berry has also had to contend with diabetes, a condition that landed her in a coma at age 22 while she was working on the set of Living Dolls. For most of her adult life she took insulin injections but in 2007, after years of proper eating and exercise, the actress was finally able to wean herself off insulin. Having turned 50 in August and looking a good decade younger, Berry posted stunning Instagram photos of herself looking better than ever to mark the occasion. And seeing how healthy and vigorous she looks today, no one can doubt that Halle Berry is still a woman on a mission to be "the best" that she can be. QH: What’s your wish for the future? HB: I would love to do interesting work and find interesting characters to play. But I'm not living and dying with that...Like everybody else, I’ve got to face up to the challenges of motherhood and living in a sort of fishbowl world. It’s not always the easiest to navigate. I feel a lot of pressure being a public figure and I’m so mindful that people are listening to every word I say, and sometimes that gets hard to bear. But people who have known me say that I am still the same person I’ve always been. But I have the knowledge of the life that I’ve had, so I can’t be exactly the same– or else, I wouldn’t have taken advantage of this amazing life that I’ve had... I also have two beautiful children and I want to be the best role model I can be for them. n

Words by Rabii'ah M. Photography by Ahmad Ali

With the National Day of Qatar just around the corner, Rabi’ah M. talks to Qatari national Ahmad Ali about his contribution to the special day through his stunning photographs

M

y first impression of Ahmad Ali is a patriot Qatari who takes great pride in talking about his culture, heritage, and traditions. He believes in capturing the different aspects of Qatari life through his photography. Ahmad provides me with a brief background of Qatar National Day (QND), celebrated every December 18, and emphasizes its importance, explaining it is a ceremony to celebrate the founding of the state of Qatar by Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. This day holds great value because National Day is not just a special day, it also commemorates a historical event and symbolizes the ideals and hopes held by the state. On this day, men and women who actively participated in nation-building by making their contribution to the state are honoured. it is the Al Thani family that has a very important role to play in this case because they are the leaders of Qatar. National Day holds immense significance in the history and life of Qataris. This is a day which is remembered as a fruitful day in accomplishing national unity. Ahmad believes this is a very

36

memorable day for people to learn about the work of the founders of Qatar who endured hardship to achieve a united country. On capturing the beauty of National Day, Ahmad explains: “It was through these images I could illustrate the traditions, customs, and traditional outfits. I wanted to illustrate a previous generation and a new generation in my work.” Conducting this comparison would involve portraying the changing faces of Qatar over generations. He points out that unfortunately there are very limited places with heritage artifacts in Qatar at present, given the rapid transformation taking place all over the country. Describing one of his expeditions for National Day, Ahmad says that he went to Fort Al Zubarah in the north of Qatar where he successfully captured images of the place. Also, he opted for the creek since it is ideally located on the east coast of Qatar; he went towards the south bank and clicked a few shots there of the traditional market and the creek. Talking about his other shot, he discusses the joys of capturing children while they are occupied with activities. If he had a choice of which aspects of the country he prefers to capture, it would be the historical side; he wishes the old half-century would make a comeback because it holds rich culture and simplicity. Ahmad believes Qatar has a lot to offer in terms of its culture and heritage, which only need a proper platform to depict their varied facets. Poetry is another cultural arena which he thinks is a key contributor to Qatari culture, especially the work of Sheikh Jassim bin Thani which is simply commendable.

The National Day of Qatar celebrations will be held from December 8 to 20 and will feature an array of vibrant events such as traditional games, empowering Qatari patriotism and commemorating the state’s unification and founding. n

Stylianides’ art is housed in private and public collections in Cyprus, the United States, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Italy, Monaco, France, and Greece. The prestigious Artnet Worldwide Corporation called his latest solo exhibition in Seattle, Washington, a “must-see exhibition”.

he Grand Hyatt Doha is hosting a month-long exhibit titled “Rhapsodic Dreams” featuring the work of internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor Yiannis Stylianides.

His parallel passions for sculpting and painting can be seen in the pieces chosen for “Rhapsodic Dreams” which are being displayed for the first time in Doha: a series of his signature sculpted wood panels depicting plan views of cities, as well as several other paintings on canvas using acrylic paints. One of the paintings was created out of pure gold exclusively for this exhibit. For the sculptures, he explored the use of reclaimed wood, transforming it into beautiful works of art.

The exhibition was inaugurated on November 9 by His Excellency Charalambos Panayides, the ambassador of Cyprus in Qatar, under the auspices of His Excellency Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, the minister of Energy, Industry, and Tourism of Cyprus. The show runs until December 10, 2016.

One of Stylianides’s main goals is to create art using original methods and distinctive combinations of materials. This exhibit includes a series of paintings created using a process he developed and calls “constructive torching”, where he forms a composition of paints and then uses a blowtorch

H

appy National Day, Qatar! As each year passes, I reflect on how far Qatar has come and in the six years that my family has called Doha home, I can say it simply just gets better and better especially for those of us with small children. There are constantly new things to see and do and I’m guessing I’m not the only one waiting with excitement for the impending opening of KidZania at The Mall of Qatar in 2017! And now that this weather has thankfully turned and we’re all out and about enjoying walks and playtime in the park, we realise just how much we do love our lives here. In fact, my little family recently enjoyed a wonderful weekend staycay at Marsa Malaz Kempinski full of beach fun, pool action and maybe THE cutest kids club I have come across here. It’s well worth a look in if you ever visit the hotel. On the beach they have a bouncy castle for little ones and staff are always so happy to greet you and help, we will definitely be staying there again!

Festive Fun In Doha

But it’s not all just about being outside this month, we also have festive fun to enjoy inside as glittering decorated trees pop up all over town, mouthwatering gingerbread houses deserve some investigation, and other activities invite your participation. Get your skates on and book your afternoon tea at both the St. Regis and Marsa Malaz Kempinski. We took our then-ten-week old baby last year and it was utterly magical, so much so that I am probably the most excited person in our household to return there again! Warm mince pies are among the many special treats that await you. So, if like me, you feel that 2016 has rocketed by, why not find some free time (if you’re lucky!) to reflect and make up some creative photobooks to have and to hold always? I have been all over www.shutterfly.com as my family will welcome a new baby boy in January. I’ve been in full nesting mode which means I’ve been creating photobooks galore, and I have to say they are wonderful mementos to keep in a digital age where we rarely look back on old photo albums. It’s also a guaranteed proud mummy moment when you see just how far your children have come! And whilst my nesting is in full swing, I’ve been decorating both our boys’ rooms with soothing neutral tones and lovely pieces found in Zara Home, IKEA, The One Junior, and from some local sellers, all of which you can find in my Top Ten newborn essentials you simply must have! Most of these are personalized items made here in Doha by other like-minded mummies! Until next time…next year…enjoy all the festivities with your family! n

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Seeking High Standards Words by Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal of Doha College Image courtesy of Doha College

Doha College advises parents seeking the best education for their children

D

ecember is a month of celebration in Qatar. One of the key dates on the calendar is Qatar National Day on 18 December when we pause to remember and celebrate Qatar's unification in 1878. In the education sector, December brings a welcome holiday from school for students. The academic year is marching forward, and examinations will soon be upon us. However, for now, we have a short time to reflect. While the Ministry of Education sets a roadmap for education and standards across Qatar, there are an increasing number of schools being set up in the country that deliver a broad range of curricula, many with well-established providers. This wide range of choices can sometimes be a concern for parents who only want the best for their children. As a parent myself, with a daughter whose education was predominantly in international schools across the world, I can assure parents of the quality a British education overseas offers. For British schools operating internationally, there are rigorous and independent inspections and accreditations undertaken by organisations such as the British School Overseas (BSO), the Council of International Schools (CIS), and the Council of British Schools (COBIS). These accrediting bodies continuously monitor the quality of a British education overseas. Doha College is celebrating its 36th year and it is now recognised as the oldest international school in Qatar, consistently ranking among the top ten international schools in the world out of 700. It is often difficult to be first in any field, and I am delighted to see the college go from strength to strength. Over 94% of our graduating students attend their first choice universities, and our alumni fulfil leading roles within Qatar. The college has been recognised both locally and internationally for continued commitment to education, winning the special recognition for services to education at the Qatar British Business Forum (QBBF) Awards. Doha College was also recognised as a shortlisted school at the British International School Awards 2017 for international impact. n

T

he St. Regis Doha is a property recognized for its timeless elegance, luxury, and renowned service standards. With its unique business and recreation facilities and award winning restaurants, it is a standout among hotels in the region. So when we were invited one Monday night to sample the tastes at its newest dining attraction by Opal and Gordon Ramsey Mediterranean, The Raw Bar, we knew we could expect no less than a magnificent evening. The restaurant is run by Chef Elias Gemayel, who has more than ten years of international culinary experience. He also oversees the culinary aspects of St. Regis Doha restaurants Opal by Gordon Ramsey and Gordon Ramsey Mediterranean.

54

Within the sophisticated atmosphere of The Raw Bar is nestled a range of caviars, oysters, carpaccio, ceviche, sushi, sashimi and other delights to savor with the finest grape and bubbly beverages. With exceptional signature dishes served throughout the week and a rare collection of beverages from around the world, The Raw Bar is the best place in Doha to enjoy a unique culinary and mixology experience for lunch and dinner. The interior decoration is stunning. The Raw Bar is designed in such a way that diners interact with the chef during the preparation of the dishes. It was fascinating to watch Chef Elias prepare the food, and I also had the opportunity to learn more about raw food, dressings, and plating.

We started our dinner with the Chef’s Selections Oysters Plate, containing a variety of Fine de Clair, Gillardeau, Ostera Edulis, and Tsarkaya oysters. You can feel the freshness and the difference of light and strong flavors between the choices. Delightful! Next we had Salmon Tataki, beautifully plated and decorated with a smart mix of ponzu dressing, green chili, crispy onion, lemon, and ginger. This fantastic dish melts in your mouth and feels light.

If you are thinking that raw food is all about seafood, you are in for a surprise. Our next dish was a fantastic Beef Tartare. The meat was massaged during the process of dressing with a selection of flavorful ingredients: olives, capers, parsley, mixed greens, and a quail egg juice that when blended into the dish rendered it moist and flavorful. Delicate crispy bread is served with it as a perfect pairing. While most of time we might feel that red meat is heavy, in this case it felt as light as a salad, seasoned to perfection with a smart dressing.

Sushi and sashimi are also part of The Raw Bar’s highquality menu. Chef Elias served a beautiful Crunchy Salmon Roll, a delicious combination of crispy tempura, Japanese mayonnaise, and fresh salmon. This was followed by Sea Bass Carpaccio, which was my favorite of the evening. What seemed like a simple dish became a star of flavorful combinations. First, Chef Elias prepared the carpaccio and treated it as a piece of art, slowly blending the condiments. The freshness of pomelo, lime, and ginger dressing was perked up by the addition of red chili, shaved fennel, and extra virgin olive oil. Not only did the flavors amaze me, the plating also was a five-star detail to the dish.

Another beautifully plated piece arrived at our table. The Seared Tuna Tataki was fresh tuna dressed with tropical salsa and honey yuzu sauce. It was a surprisingly modern mix of around-the-world tastes that capped our delightful evening. Enjoying my dinner and beverage while discussing the innovative dishes with Chef Elias Gemayel was an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend. If you are looking for a unique dining environment with quality food and

delectable beverages, your destination is The Raw Bar at St. Regis Doha, where every single bite is a divine experience. n For bookings: Call: +974 4446 0105, email: Dining.Reservations@starwoodhotels.com Hours of operation: Daily from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm Website: rawbardoha.com Smoking: NO

Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Photography by Jessie Palanca

InterContinental Doha brings you legendary cuisines from all over the world.

For many of us, Friday means having quality time to spend with family and friends enjoying international cuisines in a vibrant setting. Going to brunch with them is a perfect way of spending your day off. QH’s team went for a gastronomic tour at Coral Restaurant, Intercontinental Doha Hotel, to check out theirs fabulous Friday brunch.

I was greeted by Retma Puspita, a polite and professional lady from Indonesia who assisted us to our table. I chose to be seated at the terrace and enjoy the perfect weather because at Coral, you may dine outdoors.

I

t was a sunny Friday and I was excited to try the highly-recommended brunch experience at the newly refurbished Coral Restaurant at Intercontinental Hotel Doha. The place is even better than before. Your visit will be an opportunity to relax in a renewed atmosphere and treat your loved ones to a lavish brunch as

56

The colors and fragrances of the dishes carefully curated by Executive Chef Talal Jamil Aridi stimulated my appetites, making me eager to start our gastronomic tour though Coral Restaurant. Chef Talal took me on an adventure of discovery though the 12 stations at Coral Restaurant. The mouthwatering aromas emanating from each were an invitation to indulge in tantalising selections from the fresh oyster bar, endless sushi and sashimi counter, and sizzling Arabic grill station. Also on offer were pan-seared foie gras, seafood paella, and many more dishes deliciously paired with fresh fruit juices and house beverages. A tempting array of desserts enticed me to enter a colorful sweet world. I discovered that for each station there is a chef in charge from the same country of, or who specializes

in, the cuisine in question. That’s one of the secrets of Coral restaurant that ensures they deliver authentic food to your table. I started with the fresh oyster plate followed by the seafood collection and shrimp cocktail. Crab salad with green leaves came next to match my seafood choices. The freshness was evident in every single bite that was well-seasoned and touched by a smart mixed dressing. I could have spent my brunch time eating in this section but I had to go on exploring other tastes. I have to confess that while walking though Coral I wanted to try everything. Dishes from all around the world were spread out before me and it was so difficult to pick one. Next on my plate was the famous Pan-seared Foie Gras that melts on your tongue in an explosion of perfectly combined ingredients – you just can’t get enough of it! I was ready for more and I decided to try some of the carefully selected lobsters. As expected, it was fantastic. It was easy to separate the meat from shell and each bite was a succulent seafood extravaganza. Lobsters are famous as of the world's culinary delights, and Coral’s rendition affirms this reputation.

My experience at the Coral Terrace was a delight. My seat overlooked the pool and from my vantage point I was surrounded by live cooking stations and listening to live music from the resident band, Soul Shake, whose beats made me want to get up and dance. It was time for the sweet finale and my choice was the new chocolate mousse sphere, a delectable combination of taste and texture, the opulent flavour of the chocolate and the soft creaminess of the mousse blending together to create dessert perfection. Fantastic. I also sampled the delights of Coral’s chocolate fountain, grabbing some fresh strawberries, pineapple, and marshmallows and covering them with molten chocolate. I couldn’t be happier with my choices. By the end of the brunch experience, Chef Talal was making ice cream and bubbly sorbet at a live station by the terrace as a show. The enthralled guests recorded the magic through video and photographs. I was pleased to be the first to taste the ice cream and sorbet. For those with children, Intercontinental Doha Hotel provides the newly-opened facility The Playroom as a treat for your little ones, featuring game consoles, a television, ball pit, and Lego blocks, among other toys. A dedicated team of children’s entertainers makes sure that your children have fun as you indulge in Coral’s magnificently revamped Friday brunch. From the enthralling view to the catchy music to the abundant and appetizing flavours from around the world, Friday brunch at the InterContinental Hotel Doha’s Coral restaurant is an unforgettable experience and the perfect option for those eager to create memorable moments with family and friends. n Prices: QR 295 including soft beverages, and QR 325 including unlimited bubbly. History Of Food With Chef Zarmig Qatar: An Occasion For Food And Feasts 60

Words by Chef Zarmig Photography by Jessie Palanca

A momentous day such as this is sure to be marked by hearty feasting shared with friends and family, as Chef Zarmig explains

Q

atar National Day is an occasion to celebrate the unique history and heritage of the Qatari people and to keep past traditions alive.

It is also a day of commemoration and reverence for Sheikh Jassim and the many other people whose sacrifices led Qatar to its unification and eventual independence. This national occasion pays homage to the heroes and leaders and others who have contributed to building this beloved nation. It is an opportunity to embody the ideals and visionary aspirations based on which Qatar was founded: honesty, justice, friendship, and brotherhood. Furthermore, it is a reminder of generosity, loyalty, responsibility, and sacrifice - all considered to be the reasons for Qatar’s success today and which are seen in the country's past and present, as well as in its ability to maintain prosperity and good relations internally and throughout the Arab world. While the official national holiday falls on December 18, festivals and celebrations take place throughout the week leading up to National Day. The festivities are a great source of national pride for both Qatar residents and expatriates around the world. Qatari feasts bring together old-world hospitality and rich cultural heritage. They are opportunities to enjoy the unique old recipes that you will surely enjoy when dining in Qatar, especially with your family and friends. At traditional Qatar table settings and at celebrations such as weddings, the age-old custom of communal dining is still practised and

meal times are characterized both by the generosity of the host and the warm conversations that flourish over the shared feast. Sharing a meal at a dining table is an old honored tradition in the Arab world and an expression of hospitality, as expressed in the Arab proverbs that encourage people to share bread and salt to have a blessed life journey. May you celebrate National Day with bounteous feasts to gladden your hearts and lift your pride in Qatar's achievements throughout the years. n

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Culinary Carousel As told to Jennifer Ortuoste Photography by Jessie Palanca

Antica Pesa, Toro Toro, and Nozomi dish up a whirl of exotic tastes from Italy, Latin America, and Asia spinning global flavours on The Last Brunch of The Year!

A

re your tastebuds bored? Searching for something exciting to stir up your appetite?

Look no further than these three restaurants that promise to deliver a world of toothsome delights in Culinary Carousel, a special brunch experience. Located on the private island of Marsa Malaz Kempinski at The Pearl-Qatar, the trio offers international tastes and phenomenal views over Qanat Quartier and the Arabian Gulf.

62

ANTICA PESA After a big success in Rome and New York, Antica Pesa’s Spaghetti Burger makes a first appearance in Doha. The restaurant prides itself on reworking traditional recipes from Roman cuisine using local products. Try their tasty antipasti such as burrata with taggiasche olives and basil pesto served with beef tomatoes, and the scallops with fresh pea mousse, salmon roe, and crispy beef bacon. Their Spaghettoni Cacio & Pepe – pasta with Roman pecorino cheese and black pepper – sounds deceptively simple but bursts with authentic Italian flavour. For your entrée, try the veal escallops with porcini mushrooms or the osso bucco that melts in your mouth. Don’t forget to round out your meal with dessert – choose from gelatos, tiramisu, panna cotta, and more.

TORO TORO The restaurant’s name is echoed in the large statues of two black bulls that flank the entrance. Toro Toro’s pan-Latin culinary style gives guests a contemporary take on tastes from Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, and Mexico. Sample their mouth-watering Smoked Guacamole that goes well with the Coca Flatbread (mushroom flatbread with truffle), Lomo Empanadas, Churrasco skewers, Duck Tiradito, Suviche rolls (tuna, shrimp, beef), and Beef Filet Anticucho, among other delicacies. The well-prepared small dishes combine flavours from the most unknown parts of Latin America into the “Rodizio experience,” which is lots of meat, as much as you can eat, carved from huge slabs on skewers right onto your plate.

NOZOMI Nozomi pays tribute to Japan with an array of fresh seafood and dishes including maki, temaki, sashimi, nigiri, teppanyaki, ramen, and Japan’s signature dessert, mochi with kanten. Their seafood comes from the world’s largest fish market, Tsukiji Tokyo, and is flown to Doha to be incorporated into their signature dishes. Their brunch offering is a sushi island, constantly renewed throughout the meal, with hot dumplings, warm kushi skewers, and sweets at the Dezato table. Nozomi’s culinary style has been described as “contemporary Japanese infused with European subtleties,” and they succeed by using the best and freshest ingredients, such as their famous black cod and tender Kobe beef. Their rock shrimp is a favorite of their patrons, as is the California Roll, which uses king crab legs instead of the usual kind of crab meat. If you’re craving something that will shock your tastebuds awake, you’ll find it here on the Culinary Carousel. Take it for a spin, enjoy your exotic dining experience, and go back for more. n

Word Of Mouth Photography by Jessie Palanca

QH: Describe the quality of the food.

This column is part of a monthly contest where we send one of our readers to experience a meal in a restaurant. It’s our way of giving the community a voice in our pages. This month Ms. Dionne Lobo Marks heads to the Crossroads Kitchen at Marriott Marquis for the Arabic brunch. Here is the review.

DLM: The best word to describe the food is fresh. Even though the theme is Arabic, they do have a few international options as well. There was a live pasta station - great if you're visiting with children. They had the most delicious kibbehs that I've had, so fresh that they were still crispy on the outside when they were served. They also had a wide selection of salads, Arabic and international. The dessert station had the most divine mahalabia and warm chocolate pudding.

QH: What did you order? DLM: We visited Crossroads Kitchen at Marriott Marquis for their Arabic brunch. They serve a lovely selection of Arabic food from different countries.

QH: Describe the quality of the service. DLM: The service was impeccable. The servers were quite attentive, they didn’t need to be told to clear the table when we were done with a course. We had a child at our table, the servers were very friendly and made her feel comfortable. Overall the servers, host, and chefs were most pleasant and helpful.

QH: Were the prices reasonable? QH: Would you go back? Why/why not? DLM: The cost is QR 175 per person with soft drinks and juices. The cost is quite reasonable for the wide variety of food that they serve, keeping in mind that it includes beverages. QH: Describe the ambiance. DLM: Since it was an Arabic brunch, the ambiance was in keeping with the theme. They had a little majlis at the entrance of the restaurant that were great to take photographs in for memories. The interior of the restaurant was decorated with little Arabic lamps and giant tagines. Overall, the place gives you the feeling that you are in an Arabic restaurant.

64

DLM: It wasn’t my first time at the Crossroads Kitchen - that answers the question, I guess. What keeps me coming back to all of the restaurants at Marriott Marquis are the fresh food and exemplary service. The staff make you feel welcome and the food keeps you coming back for more. QH: Favourite thing about the restaurant? DLM: The wide choice of food and the fact that even though it was an Arabic brunch, they had other options as well. They had a few international choices for the salad, main course, and dessert.

QH: Least favourite thing about the restaurant? DLM: The Ouzi was a bit too salty. I was looking forward to it as it was an Arabic brunch. However, the critique is based on my own personal taste. The other guests at my table did enjoy it. QH: Was there a special touch or flair to the experience? DLM: As we were visiting with a child, I did appreciate that the chefs and servers paid attention to her needs and were very friendly to her. QH: Could the overall experience be improved? If so, how? DLM: don’t think they could improve the experience any more. The food was appetizing and the staff were hospitable. Those are what I generally look for in any restaurant. Keep up the good job, Marriott Marquis!!. n For more information on the Crossroads Kitchen please contact 4419-6172

Kangoo Jumps Make Workouts Tough But Fun Words by Jenny Ortuoste

InterContinental Doha The City adds an exhilarating exercise to its lineup of fitness classes

T

he fitness world has always taken advantage of advanced technology to design innovative workout equipment, and the Kangoo Jumps is one of the most interesting products to come out of an inventor’s workshop. Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes are special exercise boots that remind one of inline skates. But instead of wheels, they have arc-shaped blades and a springy elastic that gives the feel of bouncing on a trampoline. The shoes are heavy – four pounds – and bulky, like ski boots, and take some getting used to. But those who’ve used the shoes say that once they’re on, they don’t want to take them off! They’ve been quite popular for some years now, and among the celebrities who’ve been spotted bouncing around on Kangoos are reality TV stars Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, fitness model Michelle Lewin, and singer Inna.

76

Now this fun and trendy workout has arrived at InterContinental Doha The City, which has added Kangoo Jumps classes to its existing slate to provide a wide variety of healthy and fun fitness activities for guests. The Kangoo workouts, they said, offer joint and spine protection, cardiovascular fitness, weight loss, increased endurance, improved posture, and heightened energy. The Kangoo Dance class is recommended for those who enjoy traditional aerobics, Kangoo Boot Camp for indoor/outdoor circuit training, Kangoo Power for a rigorous athletic style workout, and Kangoo Discovery to fight childhood obesity and promote a healthier lifestyle. According to the manufacturer, Kangoo Jumps shoes “were originally developed for joggers, runners, and athletes, to help reduce the impact associated with vigorous athletic activity. The biggest problem for most sports is the excess strain on joints due to repeated impact.” Sports shoes, they said, even the high-tech ones with cushioning features, fail to provide significant protection, whereas the Kangoo

boots “reduces the impact stress by up to 80 percent while protecting ankles, knees, hips, lower back, and spine.” So strap on those Kangoos with confidence, and run/jog your way to fitness while having fun! n Price: QAR 75 per class. Bookings: For class reservations, please call 4015 8661.

Later this month, the 29th Italian Super Cup will be contested in Doha by two giants of world football: Juventus and Milan. What brings this prestigious trophy back to these shores for the second time? QH reports…

T

he Supercoppa Italiana is the annual trophy which is contested by the winners of the top tier in Italy (Serie A) and the winners of the Italian Cup (Coppa Italia) from the previous season.

78

In its 29 years, the Super Cup has led something of a peripatetic existence, leaving Italy on eight previous occasions: to the USA in 1993 and 2003, Libya in 2002, four times in China (Beijing, Shanghai), and also here in Qatar in 2014. On December 23rd the Super Cup returns to Doha, where Juventus and Milan will battle for the trophy at the capital’s Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, which was also the venue for the 2014 Super Cup game. On that occasion, Juventus (league winners) and Napoli (cup winners) played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in front of 14,000 spectators, with Napoli winning the trophy 6-5 on penalties.

Interestingly, while Juventus booked their spot in this year’s Super Cup final by winning last season’s Serie A, they also did the ‘double’ by winning the Coppa Italia. Milan were defeated finalists in the latter competition, which earned them their place in this showpiece game as cup runners-up.

A win-win deal So what brings the Super Cup back to the Peninsula for a second time in three years? In short, it’s a win-win deal for both parties. The President of Serie A, Maurizio Beretta commented: “We are proud that Qatar has shown such interest in hosting the Super Cup again. We have found Qatar to be a great partner that has proved to

have the ability, passion and hospitality to organize one of Italian football’s most important matches.” The message from the Italians, then, is that the experience they had with Qatar’s hosting of the Super Cup in 2014 has encouraged them to return just two years later. That’s a superb endorsement from one of Europe’s strongest leagues, and a country that has won four World Cups… From the Qatari corner, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalida Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association (QFA), added: “The strong link we have with Italian football is proportional to our commitment to organise this high-profile event. We are looking forward to hosting Juventus and Milan – two of the most popular teams in world football – and have them compete for the Super Cup in front of thousands of fans from all corners of the earth here in Doha.” One imagines that the members of the respective playing squads would very much welcome the break from the unforgiving midwinter of northern Italy to fly into Qatar’s somewhat sunnier climes!

Mutual benefit While all parties are understandably enthused about the upcoming game, there’s more collateral to be gained – both by Serie A and the QFA – from this fixture than just staging the game itself, regardless of the result. For the Italians, the continued internationalisation of one of its showpiece events is important in helping raise the profile of Serie A in front of an international audience, both in the flesh and on TV. This would not have been necessary 20-25 years ago, when Italian clubs were the masters of European competition, their

top flight was the world’s richest, and subsequently attracted the world’s best players. This is no longer the case, as Serie A has been eclipsed by the English Premiership (EPL), and so the Italians are, commendably, doing all they can to return their league to the top of the pile.

in Qatar, not to mention The Maroons’ own competitive games played in qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup (achieved with ease) and the 2018 World Cup (pending).

For Qatar, hosting the Super Cup for the second time is undoubtedly another brick in the road to the 2022 World Cup. It is further proof to the nay-sayers who believed Qatar simply wasn’t big enough to handle the big games that their analysis was erroneous.

It also underlines the ways in which QFA activity dovetails with governmental policy – that the latter is unending in its pursuit to bring the biggest and most attractive spectacles as it can to Qatar, not only to entertain its burgeoning population, but to underline its emergence as a global player in terms not only of sporting events, but also in arts, entertainment, tourism, retail and some of the finest hotels on the planet.

Hot on the heels of Qatar winning the right to host WC2022 came the 2011 Asian Cup, and since then a raft of very high-profile international friendlies played

That’s perhaps a discussion for another time, so at this juncture I’m just looking forward to the 23rd, and hopefully a decent game of football! n

Exercise, Eat, And Relax Words by Sohel Samnani, Personal Trainer, Evolve

Do you want to add years to your life? Or do you want to add life to your years? Either way, you need to be fit and healthy to make the most out of life. Here are some health hints from the experts at EVOLVE – Mind /body/soul, that will put pep back into your step!

D

espite the stigma, bad health does not always mean having a very serious condition and getting hospitalised. Even a small condition, if it obstructs your activities of daily living, should be taken seriously, and it could be anything from bad posture to lower back and neck pain or heavy breathing. Neglecting these symptoms at the beginning stage could lead to serious problems in the future. A recent study published by the American Heart Association says too much sitting and other sedentary activities can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Adults who watch more than four hours of

80

television a day had a 46 percent increased risk of death from any cause and an 80 percent increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease. It is important to pay attention to our health so that we can live a good lifestyle. But the question is, how do we do that? “Small changes can make a big difference” A small change in your lifestyle can improve your health in a big way. There are three essential factors to consider – physical activity, nutrition, and stress:

Physical activity The American Heart Association suggests that all adults should engage in 150 minutes a week of physical activity at moderate intensity to maintain their fitness level, or 75 minutes a week of activity at vigorous intensity to help maintain their current fitness level. Increasing the time to 300 minutes a week of moderate exercise and 150 minutes a week of vigorous intensity will help you improve your current fitness level. The physical activity could be anything from doing the shopping, swimming, dancing, playing competitive sports or lifting weights, etc. These activities should include a minimum of two days of resistance (weight bearing) exercise.

Benefits: • Improves blood circulation, which reduces the risk of heart disease • Keeps weight under control • Helps in the battle to quit smoking and any other bad habit • Improves blood cholesterol level • Prevents and manages high blood pressure • Prevents bone loss • Boosts energy level • Helps manage stress • Releases tension • Counters anxiety and depression • Helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly • Improves self-image • Increases muscle strength, increasing the ability to do other physical activities • Provides a way to share an activity with family and friends • Reduces risk of stroke by 20 percent in moderately active people and by 27 percent in those who are highly active • Establishes good heart-healthy habits in children and counters the conditions (obesity, high blood pressure, poor cholesterol levels, poor lifestyle habits, etc.) that lead to heart attack and stroke later in life

Your Way To Health • Helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging and maintains quality of life and independence longer for seniors

Nutrition Eating a balanced diet is crucial for living a healthy lifestyle. Most of the people these days emphasize counting calories, which is a myth when it comes to seeking a healthier diet. Counting calories is generally prescribed for those who are athletes or for people suffering from certain metabolic conditions. For the general population, counting calories itself is a hectic task! No wonder so many people give up and go back to old habits. The best way to eat nutritiously is to control the portion size of your meal: • Your palm determines your protein portions. • Your fist determines your vegetable portions. • Your cupped hand determines your carbohydrate portions. • Your thumb determines your fat portions. For men: • 2 palms of protein-dense foods with each meal; • 2 fists of vegetables with each meal; • 2 cupped hands of carbohydrate-dense foods with most meals;

• 2 entire thumbs of fat-dense foods with most meals. For women: • 1 palm of protein-dense foods with each meal; • 1 fist of vegetables with each meal; • 1 cupped hand of carbohydrate-dense foods with most meals; • 1 entire thumb of fat-dense foods with most meals. A good tool to use is the hunger scale, which starts at 0 and ends at 10. The number “0” is feeling beyond hungry, lightheaded, famished, cranky, and weak. “1” is really really hungry. “2” is really hungry. “3” and “4” are normal hunger. “5” is no feeling. “6” and “7” are satisfied. “8” is full. “9” is really full. “10” is miserably full. Start eating at the scale of 3-4 and stop eating at scale 6-7.

Stress Stress can affect your lifestyle and can cause health-related problems later on in your life. Stress hormones are released by your body during highly stressful situations and they can cause your cells to age, making you look older, and no one wants that.

There is a substantial body of research connecting stress to cardiovascular disease, with the future indicator of hypertension related to the individual‘s response to stress, metabolic syndrome, obesity, emotional overeating, etc. Without stress management, all too often your body is on high alert. Over time, high levels of stress lead to serious health problems. Don't wait until stress has a negative impact on your health, relationships, or quality of life. Start practicing a range of stress management techniques today. Meditate, breathe deeply, laugh out loud, listen to music, talk to a friend or talk to yourself, practice yoga, do other types of physical exercise, go for a massage – there are many ways to exercise and de-stress. But remember that sleep is one of the most effective natural stress relief options out there — and it’s free as well! n These are general guidelines. Please consult your doctor before putting these guidelines into action. For personalised advice. talk to Evolve’s nutrition and exercise experts. Feels Like Holiday Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Images Courtesy of the Doha Marriott Hotel

Need an enchanting escape from the hurry and hustle of a busy world? The Doha Marriott Hotel offers whatever a guest requires, from luxury and efficiency to tranquility and excitement, all for a glorious staycation experience right in the city.

L

ocated on the east shore of Doha Bay, the Doha Marriott Hotel overlooks the marina and the beautiful Corniche with its ministries and main business centre. The hotel is ten kilometers away from Hamad International Airport and five kilometers from the city centre. The hotel opened as the first five-star Hotel in Qatar in 1972 as a Gulf Hotel and joined the Marriott International Lodging Portfolio in 1999. The most recent refurbishment was done in 2004. We didn’t have any holidays coming our way, but we were in need of a break so we decided to take a staycation at the Doha Marriott. Upon our arrival there on a Thursday afternoon, we were greeted at the reception by a professional and welcoming staff who assisted us to our bedroom.

86

The view from the huge wall window in our room was amazing as we could see the sea and also the beautiful outdoor space, sparkling swimming pool, and the private beach. We relaxed a bit and got ready for the famous Street Food experience that happens every Thursday at Doha Marriot. Carefully managed by Chef Oliver Weber, the hotel halls become a food festival venue with dining options from all around the world.

Enticing aromas arose from the live cooking sections all around us. We sat at Salsa restaurant where we listened to the Rocio Cristal Band regale us with a mix of Latino and classic hits. The music was irresistible and it was impossible not to sing all night long. We took our tray and began our dining experience. So many different flavours were available to taste

and I just couldn’t get enough. We started with the seafood buffet, then moved on to Asian and Mexican cuisine. We returned to Salsa to enjoy good music and the vibrant atmosphere. The night went so pleasantly that I didn’t realize the time. Once in bed, we fully relaxed and enjoyed the sumptuous comfort of our room, from pillowtop bedding to marble bathrooms to 24-hour room service. Upon awakening we had a shining Friday waiting for us. We opened the curtains wide and the magnificent sea view greeted us a beautiful good morning. We went to the Corniche restaurant with all-day dining to have our breakfast, and again, options were almost unlimited. Bakery, fruits, cheese, live cooking station, Asian, and Arabic food were some of the many delectable options. The waitress approached our table and asked us our hot beverage choice. I requested a cappuccino and also fresh juice, toast, and some eggs. I enjoyed every bite. After breakfast it was time to enjoy some sun, pool, and beach time. It was very quiet and I almost fell asleep. This was all I needed to relax. You can stay all day long by the pool or beach and also have your lunch and beverage outside. After a calming poolside rest, I enjoyed a full-body massage at the Doha Marriott Spa. The spa features tranquil indoor relaxation areas, showers, steam areas, whirlpools, and a cold plunge pool. Other amenities include a full-service beauty salon and spray tan room. The spa offers separate areas for ladies and gentlemen. Massage, facials, and other beauty treatments are available by appointment, seven days a week. The Doha Marriott Hotel also has a Health Club that maintains a 24-hour gym and also features a temperature-controlled outdoor pool and jacuzzi, private beach, children’s pool and playground, and private marina.

Our weekend stay was an absolute delight. We felt the five-star service in every single detail. Our staycation was too short to experience all the options offered. For dining alone, Doha Marriot has six outlets: Salsa (Tex-Mex), Taj Rasoi (Indian), Asia Live!, Corniche (international), The View Poolside Restaurant, JW’s Steakhouse, and the Pearl Lounge Club. For workaholics, Doha Marriot also has an Executive Lounge, Business Center, and meeting facilities, making it a complete and international destination. I look forward to another pampering weekend at Doha Marriot Hotel to experience once more its lavish hospitality and wide array of amenities that assure each guest of a satisfying and pleasant stay.n For booking: phone +974 44298888 Website: www.dohamarriott.com

It is remarkable how in just a few decades Qatar has transformed from a colony to a modern, bustling, independent country with a deep appreciation for history and culture, and an aspiration to evolve into a global destination.

Doha is a city of liveliness and activity, but for a getaway, its surrounding coastal towns are choice spots for day trips to see extraordinary landscapes and spend leisure time.

nce FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) announced that the 2020 World Cup would be held in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, a hullabaloo of excitement ensued.

Doha sits center stage on the world map right now, and it’s a splendid time to call the city, and Qatar, home. This is a perfect opportunity to take pride in the country and to become more knowledgeable about the city, its surroundings, and what it offers travelers as well as Qataris.

As a first stop, take a 40-minute drive from Doha and arrive at Al Khor. Once the center of the pearl trade industry, the municipality is a coastal beach town that offers a day of relaxation.

Al Khor: From pearls to picnics

Walk the Corniche to take in the views, visit the fish market, and set up a picnic on the beach—it's the ideal place for those in search of repose. Visit the Al Khor Park, recently opened after a renovation. With a miniature golf course, manicured lawns, and a menagerie of zoo animals including zebras, emus,

ostriches, and llamas, it’s a pleasant place to spend the day.

Simaisma: From simple to luxe Just a 15-minute drive from Al Khor is Simaisma Beach, a stretch of shore nestling a jetty and embraced by a cluster of mangroves. This is a great place for a daytrip for nature lovers. Explore the mangroves, go bird watching, and see the wildlife. The beach has all the facilities needed for a day spent with the family: a playground area, barbecue pits, toilets, and shaded areas. But if a staycation in a sumptuous place is more your cup of tea, check out the luxury Simaisma Beach Resort that opened less than a year ago. With villas overlooking the ocean, a swimming pool that spills into the horizon, a gym, health club and spa, it is the ultimate weekend retreat.

An hour and a half drive north of Doha and you turn up at another seaside village, Al Ghariya, and Fuwairit Beach. This is where the pastel blue waters of the gulf wash over the desert sand. Splash about in the sea, make sand castles with friends and family, or soak up the sun while enjoying nature. Fuwairit is a long stretch of white sand and crystalline water hailed as one of the best spots to catch the setting sun, so make sure to have your camera ready to take postcard-worthy images.

Umm Bab: Quiet and tranquil On the west coast and also an hour’s drive from Doha is Umm Bab or Palm Tree Beach, part of the Alreem natural reserve and located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. It's a private beach with calm, shallow waters and a small pier. This beach is an ideal spot for camping and enjoying nature.

Ras Abrouq: Sea sports and more Also on the west coast some 50 miles from Doha on the outskirts of the Abrouq Reserve is Ras Abrouq Beach. A popular destination for windsurfers and travelers who enjoy camping and the outdoors, it is located in a remote and rocky terrain.

This area is celebrated for the scenic half-moon bay and large limestone formations. A few miles away is Film City, a mini-town constructed for a television series and later abandoned. It is close to the nature reserve where gazelles and deer roam free, and where you can spot the oryx antelope, native to the area.

Khawr al Udayd: Camping under the stars A little over an hour’s drive through the desert takes you to Khawr al Udayd or the Inland Sea. The only place in the world where the ocean finds its way to the heart of the desert, this is a Qatari treasure. Stay the night and set up a campsite to fully enjoy nature and the sounds and sights of the desert at night. A desert country bordering the ocean, comprising sand and sea: two elements antithetical to each other, but that come together to create the unique spot on the world map that is Qatar. You can set off for a day and visit a number of seaside villages, nature reserves, and the desert, all just a short distance drive from Doha. Picture Perfect Perth Words by Dawn Gibson Images courtesy of Tourism Western Australia, Crown Perth, Caversham Wildlife Park

Beachcombing and River Cruising

F

In Perth, visitors are spoiled for choice with 19 beaches along the city coastline. Cottesloe is the best known, an Instagram-friendly combination of white sand and grass-covered picnic areas with a buzzing café and restaurant scene. North of the city, Scarborough Beach reigns supreme as a hot spot for surfers and the cool crowd, and also has a lively café culture. The Wild Fig on the Scarborough Esplanade is the perfect spot for a lazy brunch, with menu faves such as the big fig brekkie and eggs on fire (eggs any which way with avocado, chilli and stuffed jalapenos).

It’s a shame that many don’t bother to venture to the western seaboard, because they are missing out. Perth is a gem of a city, brimming with attractions, and gateway to the enormous expanse of Western Australia (to put it in perspective, the state is more than three times the size of Texas). Perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, fringed with powdery white sand beaches that are among the best in the world, it’s a pretty, sunny metropolis with an attitude that’s laidback even by Aussie standards. There are daily direct flights from Doha, and it will take you three hours less than a flight to Sydney.

Perth was built on the banks of the Swan, a beautiful waterway which winds from the picturesque Swan Valley to the port city of Fremantle in the south. Going for a river cruise should be on every visitor’s itinerary. You can see some of Perth’s opulent riverside mansions, the booty of Western Australia’s mining wealth, have a leisurely lunch on deck and even stop off at Perth Zoo. The Fremantle cruises are very popular and include time to explore the port city’s bustling Cappuccino strip and Fishing Boat Harbour.

There’s so much more to Australian cities than Sydney and Melbourne. Dawn Gibson explains why the West Coast doesn’t need to boast. or most people, a visit to Australia means travelling to the continent’s east coast – being wowed by the harbour views in Sydney, shopping in Melbourne, catching some sun on a Queensland beach, and fitting in a quick outback experience.

90

Up Close with Nature

Of course, an Aussie holiday would not be complete without seeing some wildlife. While Perth Zoo has a lovely native animal section, Caversham Wildlife Park is not to be missed. You can hand feed kangaroos and wallabies, meet a wombat and chill out with the koalas, or even wear a python if that’s your fancy. The park is 30 minutes’ drive from the city. A short stroll from the central business district is Kings Park, Perth’s crowning glory and an excellent place for photos, with sweeping views over the city skyline and the river. Bigger than New York’s Central Park, you can easily spend all day in this wonderland of botanical gardens, natural bushland, picnic areas and children’s playgrounds. Wedding parties are common on the weekend, so don’t be surprised to see a blushing bride posing in front of the majestic backdrop. It’s also worth a visit after dark, when the reflections from the skyscrapers on the river show why Perth is known as the ‘City of Lights’.

Nightlife and Foodie Fun For many first-time visitors, Perth can be a bit confusing in terms of nightlife. The central shopping precincts, bustling during the day,

mostly shut up shop at night, and the action moves to a cluster of trendy nearby suburbs and the central business district. Northbridge is the granddaddy of the night scene, just across the railway line from the city proper. Wander the streets in the evening and prepare for sensory overload from the aroma of dozens of restaurants serving cuisine ranging from Lebanese to Greek, Italian to Vietnamese. A personal favourite is the steamed Chinese dumplings from the Old Shanghai food court on James Street – cheap as chips and twice as tasty. For a sophisticated night out, try one of the many restaurants at the glamorous Crown Perth resort. There’s a branch of the world-renowned Japanese fusion restaurant Nobu, the awardwinning Rockpool Bar & Grill, a French bistro, a fine dining Chinese eatery and an Italian, among others. Also worth exploring are the café strips of Leederville, Mt Lawley, Subiaco and West Perth. n

A Haven Of Serenity And Relaxation Words by Luciana Cunha Franca

In need of some pampering to recharge yourself for a busy and stressful week ahead? At Four Seasons Hotel Doha’s Spa and Wellness Centre, treat yourself to the most luxurious massages and skin care this side of the Gulf.

I

t was one of those busy Wednesdays when I felt rundown and in need of some time off to relax and enjoy myself. I decided to visit the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel Spa in Doha. I would have to say that this is Qatar’s most comprehensive spa and wellness centre. This impressive destination spa, which opened in 2005, is housed within its own three-storey building encompassing 3,345 square metres (36,000 square feet) of space graced with tranquil beachfront views of the Arabian Gulf. Four Seasons has 11 treatment rooms where clients receive Sodashi facials and massages. It is the only spa in Doha that offers hydrotherapy facilities, which include a giant hydrotherapy pool with underwater jets and overhead fountains and over a dozen separate massage areas for different body parts; countercurrent pools, ideal for when the temperature outside is too warm; a reflexology pool, where the guest’s feet are massaged by having them walk in circles on beach stones; and cold and heated plunge pools. Not only that, there are also three heated laconium beds, an innovative colour therapy room, a sauna, steam room, ice room, and Swiss shower, which boasts of 15 sideways jets and an overhead rain shower. I know what you’re thinking – “This is amazing!” – and that’s exactly how I describe this fantastic place which offers complete amenities and the most luxurious ambience. Four Seasons hinges its concept upon ancient Chinese medicine’s Five Elements of Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal that bring balance to the body, mind, and spirit: • Fire: a powerful energy that embodies warmth, purity, and cleansing to bring about a detoxifying and rejuvenating experience. • Water: the foundation of life, it is an essential element for health, energy, and growth. In its purest state, water embodies clean and revitalizing characters.

92

• Earth: the blend of all five elements, earth exemplifies strength through its natural healing powers. • Wood: wood symbolizes the beginning of life and restores and energizes harmony from within, resulting in a profound experience. • Metal: when in balance, the powerful force of metal generates optimism, order, and precision. Intertwining the natural features of metal with Earth's gravity results in a restorative journey of the mind, body, and spirit. Four Seasons Spa Director Ori Evapudan explained that the goal of the spa is to deliver whatever it is that guests expect, whether it be de-stressing, relaxation, therapeutic and refreshing skin care, and rejuvenating or uplifting treatments. The spa also offers a wellness program which includes personal training, food consultation, biomechanics, and a nutrition plan. “At the beginning of each session,” said Evapudan, “whether for a massage, facial, or personal training, therapists or personal trainers discuss with the guests what they would like to achieve and we create a treatment or program that is tailored to address the guest's issue.” This custom service is exactly what I received from my therapist Mimi, a polite and professional lady who explained to me, step by step, what I was about to experience. I filled out a consultation form asking about my medical history, and I was so excited when I read this question on the form: where I would like to have a massage while having my facial mask! After being assisted to a changing room, I was asked if I would like to enjoy the jacuzzi or sauna before my treatment. While I was tempted by the offer, I was looking forward to my Biologique Recherche experience. This is a totally organic facial that promised to provide whatever my skin actually needs at the moment. Before starting this facial, my skin was analyzed by Mimi with a machine using advanced technology to determine the exact treatment and products that would make my skin glow. The first step was a two-hour skin preparation treatment. First I inhaled the aroma of Huile Détente for calming. This was followed by the removal of my eye makeup with Solution Démaquillante pour les Yeux; for the face we used Eau Micellaire Biosensible. Skin cleansing was done with Lait VIP O2 and exfoliation with Lotion P50, after which my skin was sprayed with L'Eauxygénante - oxygen water - another excellent product for refreshing the skin. These steps are executed with a soft facial massage which was most relaxing.

After the skin preparation, Lotion MC 110 was applied as a booster treatment to lift and regenerate by removing dead skin, while my therapist worked on muscle line to uplift the skin. This procedure took around 30 minutes. Mimi then soothed my skin with a combination of two facial masks, Masque Vivant and Masque VIPO2, which promote oxygenation of the skin and add skin nutrition. While the products are absorbed into the skin, I was having a scalp massage, which took 15 minutes. I felt so soothed and relaxed that I fell asleep. After the masks were rinsed off, the therapist applied serum based on my skin condition, combining four different serums: Oligo Proteins, Extraits Tissulaires, Dermopore, and Collagène Natif. A Remodeling Face Machine was use for the serum application. It uses four different currents to allow the serum to penetrate to the deeper layers of skin. When I thought it was all over, I got another facial massage using Crème Dermopurifiante to conclude the treatment, Crème Contour des Yeux et Levres Biofixine to refresh the eyes, and UV - Protection lotion and RHR Grand Millesime as finishing creams. The facials were completed by applying Biokiss to hydrate the lips. In addition to its custom programs, Four Seasons Hotel Doha Spa also creates relaxing packages that include scrub, facial, and massage that range from two and a half hours to five hours. Guests are also advised to try the healing waters, treatments for

two, and the salon services. Afterwards, they can refresh themselves at the Après Spa Café. My entire experience was fantastic. I felt recharged, energized, and stress-free. I am glad that the Four Seasons Spa is in Doha so that I can return and live this magical experience all over again. n FOUR SEASONS HOTEL DOHA SPA AND WELLNESS CENTRE Phone: +974 4494 8802 Email: spa.doh@fourseasons.com Website: www.fourseasons.com/doha Hours/Days of Operation: Open everyday: spa facilities from 6am – 11pm, spa treatments from 9am - 10pm For salon reservations, please call +(974) 4494 8844 or email fp@andtrading.net
