FILM IN FOCUS
STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: IS IT REALLY THE END OF THE ROAD FOR ‘THE LAST JEDI’? SOON WE ALL ONCE AGAIN WILL BE RETURNING TO A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY AS THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE STAR WARS SAGA IS RELEASED. AND THIS TIME ROUND THE PLOT IS TWICE AS DARK AND TWICE AS INTENSE.
D
irected by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (aka Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) is the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. This action packed sequel picks up immediately after the events of 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which ended with the film’s heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) coming face-to-face with an elderly Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), now living a life of monastic solitude on a planet called Ahch-To. With underlying tones of the film being influenced by Second World War movie classics Bridge on the River Kwai and Twelve O’Clock High, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has hints of being a war film. The biggest question to the movie is “Who is the last Jedi?” Throughout the film it becomes apparent that the title is in reference to Luke Skywalker, who for reasons unknown removes himself to be alone on the island. Skywalker has grown somewhat disillusioned with the whole Jedi religion – with one key line being, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Episode VIII’s darker tone and tension within the film will certainly move audiences.
From the trailer alone, the tone and the feel of the movie is reflected, and one thing is for sure that this movie will really surprise people with its plotline and story. Although most of the plot details are being kept very secret to avoid spoilers, many of the heroes and villains return, including escaped Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), dark warrior Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa and Lupita Nyong’o as the animated alien pirate Maz Kanata. More exciting, however, are the celebrity cameos. Gary Barlow has been given a character of his own, while Prince Harry, Prince William and Tom Hardy all make appearances as Stormtroopers - although you might struggle to spot them; their faces will presumably be hidden. If The Last Jedi is anything like The Force Awakens or Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, you can expect a lot of violence that may be too intense for younger kids, but also great role models and an action-packed adventure that all will love. The Last Jedi will be followed in May 2018
by the Ron Howard-directed anthology film dedicated to Han Solo. Star Wars: Episode IX, the final chapter in the trilogy.
Director: Rian Johnson | Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Fantasy Cast: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill | Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar December 14th QH Fun Fact: With a running time of about 150 minutes, this is the longest movie of the Star Wars saga.

CELEBRITY FEATURE
TURNING DREAMS INTO A REALITY THE MOST ANTICIPATED FILM ARRIVES TO OUR SCREEN THIS MONTH, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, AND WE’LL BE ESPECIALLY EAGER TO SPOT LUPITA NYONG’O WHO IS BACK AS THE SPACE PIRATE, MAZ KANATA. BUT UNDER ALL THE DIGITAL SPECIAL EFFECTS THAT TURN HER INTO THE OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD CHARACTER, LUPITA OOZES BUNDLES OF GLAMOUR AND FINESSE.
N
amed as ‘The Most Beautiful Woman’ by People magazine, Lupita Nyong’o has appeared on the cover of Vogue and Elle and is the new face of Lancome. She may have been blessed by nature and inherited great genes with her flawless look, but her beauty also radiates from within – Lupita exudes energy and love. Describing herself as Kenyan-Mexican, Lupita was born in Mexico City and raised in Kenya and is child number two of six. Her father was a Kenyan politician, which afforded Lupita to be brought up in a very middle-class lifestyle once the family moved back to Kenya. At the age of eight or nine Lupita watched ‘The Color Purple’, and straight away felt a connection with the actors on her screen. Comparing herself to Whoopi Goldberg
14
CELEBRITY FEATURE because she had the same kind of hair and was dark in complexion as her, gave Lupita the courage to believe that maybe one day she also could take on acting for a living. Describing her passion for acting and the movie world, Lupita draws reference to her childhood days and her love of makebelieve; spending hours on hours with her Barbies acting out many whimsical scenes. Those hours in the cupboard and nurturing her imaginative mind paid off. To date, Lupita’s career highlight has been of winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her moving and harrowing role in ‘12 Years a Slave’. Lupita Nyong’o was also nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as an orphan in Eclipsed – a play that ran on Broadway, New York. Some of her work has been tragic and sorrowful but she demonstrated what an incredibly versatile actress she is when she voiced the mother wolf who adopts Mowgli in ‘The Jungle Book’. It’s not just her acting talents we admire though. Lupita speaks out against injustice and is well known for her commitment to conservation and environmental issues – which she campaigns about. And it’s not only words, Lupita Nyong is known for her actions – supporting charities, including taking an active role in raising funds for hurricane relief with Hand in Hand. Grounded in the embrace of her loving Kenyan family, Lupita celebrates her love and respect for her parents publicly and it was her brother who escorted her to the Oscar Ceremony. She acknowledges their role in encouraging her to aim high and achieve and as such, Lupita is indeed bright and intelligent – speaking four languages: Spanish, Luo, English and Swahili. And has channelled her talents into making a documentary film “In My Genes” about discrimination against albinism in Kenya,
which in turn was patriotic in her Kenyan roots. And these qualities, which show her real personality, only enhance her beauty and elegance on and most certainly, also off the silver screen.

Painting by Ahmed Al Jufairi
get cul tured WE SHED LIGHT ON QATAR’S TALENTED ARTISTS, AHMED AL JUFAIRI AND ASSIL DIAB ON EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS WHERE THEY SHARE THEIR PASSIONS, STRUGGLES AND A VOICE TO THEIR ARTISTRY. AND, GET AN INSIGHT SCOOP ON QATAR’S VERY OWN STARS THAT ARE PUTTING THE COUNTRY AT THE TOP OF THE GAME.
ARTIST FEATURE
Ahmed Al Jufairi THIS MONTH QH SHEDS LIGHT ON QATARI ARTIST AHMED AL JUFAIRI AND HIS MANY PASSIONS, INCLUDING BEYONCE. we want to admit it or not. I believe in order to be titled as “an artist”, or to make art, your intent should be as grand as wanting to change the world, or the patterns repeated in history. Art is why I believe I exist.
Who inspires you the most?
Beyoncé, always has been and always will be my biggest inspiration. Whenever I feel like I need to create it is because of an idea that comes to mind when either watching her music videos, listening to her music or studying her ways of achieving what she has. I do not use the Beyoncé term lightly, I know exactly how controversial it is in Qatar to be inspired by her, but there is a good reason as to why I insist on continuing to credit her for whatever work I make. Merging her music with my everyday life, my sadness, my happiness and my heartbreak is what I am as an artist, but my message is simple – the reason I continue is because I want others to do the same, dare to express.
Your approach to art is very particular and different from the rest of the crowd, how have you handled the positive and the negative that comes along with such success?
What got you into art?
My bloodline; I believe artistry is inherited. Ever since I can remember I have been drawing, creating, performing, painting and simply being imaginative since before I could walk. One may obtain the skills and techniques to create beautiful works, but it is not beauty that makes an artist, it is the never ending burning desire to achieve something to the point of obsession. I just happen to do it through various forms of Fine Art.
Your exceptional exhibition titled, JAM – what was the inspiration behind it? JAM is a two-year long concept that I have been finalizing, I told myself I would not exhibit JAM unless I was certain it would be powerful enough to create a social shift achieved through art. The inspiration behind
20
JAM is mainly the idea of feminism in Qatar, when we speak of global feminism, The Middle East does not seem to fall under that topic, this is an issue and should change because Qatar has the triumphs and struggles when it comes to topics like feminism as does the western world. The name JAM was inspired by Michael Jackson’s song – JAM, I believe I make my best work when inspired by popular culture, specifically western pop music.
When I was first enrolled in VCU-Qatar, I was asked: “Who inspires you?” Instead of saying Van Gogh, Richard Sierra or Damien Hurst, I said Beyoncé and Andy Warhol. I did not think it would be such a shock to the people around me, but I took that sense of astonishment the people had and used it as fuel to continue to normalize what they perceived was strange. I have received negativity throughout my success as an artist, but have also received many positive and wonderful opportunities. I did reach points where I would ask myself is it worth it to continue doing what I do? Am I capable of handling the stress of being the one amongst the many that challenges society to accept the different? Because it has been difficult I am not going to lie, but it is when I receive an email, an inbox, or people coming up to me and telling me how my work inspired them to strive to become happy and loving towards themselves – this is why I do what I do.
What’s your take on art?
Favourite spot to chill in Doha?
When I am approached and asked: “What do you do?” I never say “I do art.” I say: “I am an artist.” It is difficult to explain how we artists feel but it is almost as though we are different to people who are not in fields of creativity. We feel more, artist are the most affected people by their surroundings such as society, cultures, atmospheres whether
My favourite spot to chill in Doha is without a doubt the Doha Fire Station Artist Residency, even though my Doha Residency ended with the successful exhibition that was then noticed by a gallery in London, I still go there almost every day. The atmosphere there is exactly what I look for when it comes to the exchange of energy in an environment, it
What’s your creative process when starting a painting, or piece of art? My process usually starts with anger, I always told the people closest to me, if you want my work to become better than it was, make me angry. When one’s heart breaks, they tend to get sad, but when it comes to me I get mad. I get so angry to the point of success and creation of art. I begin with one question and it stems to so much more, “What do you want to do?” I ask myself, do I want to please people, do I want to improve my skill? Do I want to make a statement? Do I want to motivate? Do I want to inform? What do I want to do at that moment, where will I exceed the most based solely on what is driving me at that moment, lately it has been societal development and the idea of globalization, I begin with seeing how for example Beyoncé proceeded with the creation of one of her albums – why was it so powerful and how did she reach a point of massive impact universally? And then I do what most artists do, learn from the greats and make it my own. I believe that the effort
put into making the art pieces should be just as exhausting as the time put into the concept and incentive behind the work, I know my artistic and personal paths differ from my surroundings, so I always give 110% to get equal recognition when compared to others around me.
Any advice for artists in Doha?
Do not give up. It is difficult, believe me I know, sometimes you feel like the people around will simply start to get you if you just stop creating, but trust me when I say if you continue your time will come. You will reach exactly what your dreams were when you first started. Do not be afraid to ask for help, the art community in Qatar is big, but not that big. We have incredible artists that are more than willing to lend a helping hand if you just ask. My final piece of advice is of course to always remain humble, you could have one hundred shows globally but that does not give you the right to think you are better than or more qualified, embrace your failures, rejections and negative aspects in your journey because it is exactly those things that make you better than you were the day before.
Favourite country to visit?
Maybe it is the Qatari in me, but my absolute favourite place to visit is London. Unlike every other country I have visited, U.K. strangely enough felt like home, I love the weather, the people, the art, and lifestyle there so much. It would be a dream come true if I could continue my education there and actually say “I lived in London”. Of course, part of the reason why I love London so much is because of Reconnecting Arts – a Qatari initiative to globalize local artists, I have been a participant in both of their exhibitions, one in 2016 and one in 2017. They truly gave me the respect and dignity as an artist and I will forever be grateful for all they have done for the arts in Qatar.
Any future collaborations or exhibitions you’ll be part of that we should know about?
I will be ending 2017 with a show in Germany, which is part of the Qatar Museums Authority Qatar-German Exchange. My work was thankfully chosen to be part of an incredible exhibition in Berlin, Germany which will take place on the 8th of December, 2017 and will stay on for a while, I will be exhibiting some works from my JAM collection. I have also already started preparing for exhibitions and announcements in 2018 which will be even bigger than what I have done in the past. February 2018 and May 2018 will be an exciting time for what I am planning, of course I will be keeping it as a surprise and announce the future events shortly before they occur.

FROM SUDAN with Love…and with a Voice ARTIST ASSIL DIAB GIVES QH AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A FEMALE GRAFFITI ARTIST IN QATAR, AND HOW SHE IS BREAKING THE MOLD BY BECOMING A PIONEER ON WHAT SHE LOVES BEST – BEING AN ARTIST.
24
Virginia Commonwealth University “VCUarts Qatar” holds great art workshops and galleries throughout the year. You’ll always spot great paintings and uniquely designed furniture throughout the building.
The main advice I can give someone starting off a career in art would be to find inspiration. Find out what really provokes creativity for you, and you’ll discover that’s the initiative for life changing, prodigious work.
As a woman, has it been difficult to break into the whole graffiti scene?
Favourite artist that inspires you?
Graffiti has always been a male-dominated art form. People assume that being a Muslim, Afro-Arab female there are given gender and cultural roles expected of you and if you don’t take on these responsibilities, you inevitably become “too Western”. I call myself ‘ Sudalove’ to express my love for Sudan and raise awareness that as a Sudanese woman, I have a voice in society through the walls that I paint, in various parts of the world. Art is an international language; it helps break stereotypes between close-minded cultures and traditions that suppress their societies.
Biggest accomplishment as an artist so far in your career?
Being the first graffiti artist emerging from Qatar and Sudan is my biggest accomplishment. I believe that I broke the stereotypical boundaries of what a graffiti artist should be and the associated gender, culture, and even religion accompanying the art form. I quit my office job in 2014 and was able to make a living out doing graffiti full time, which is also an accomplishment in this part of the world where freelance work is not as common and eminent as working for someone or some place.
Dream collaboration with?
What got you into design and graffiti?
I’ve always been good at art. I took up graphics design in Virginia Commonwealth University because there were no Fine Arts courses in Qatar at the time. I grew to love designing, particularly branding and print design. I’ve always wanted to be a footwear designer and was so sure I was going to do just that after I graduated. I did an internship as a photographer and graphic designer for a fashion blog called Style Defined in New York City back in 2010 and that’s where I fell in love with graffiti. Just seeing it everywhere was thrilling; I’d see graffiti on a tall building and wonder how did the artist get up there and feel so comfortable spraying that pretty tag on the most acrophobic place on earth.
I would love to collaborate with all the unfortunate street kids of the Sudan and paint the world’s biggest mural along the Nile. I’ve done this before in small scale, I think it’s important for youth to see a Sudanese woman create a positive impact by breaking barriers through art. Graffiti can serve as community service and can pave the way for disadvantaged youth.
El Seed inspired me to become a graffiti artist. I learned so much from him working with him for four months. He saw something in me and gave me the push to take up graffiti art as a career. I first tried spray-painting in 2013 when I assisted French-Tunisian artist El Seed on a project supported by Ashghal and Qatar Museums Authority to paint the Salwa Road Tunnels with ‘Calligraffiti’. I was instinctively good at spray-painting, it was therapeutic to me, and almost instantaneously became a full time graffiti artist. My first work was 13 pieces of graffiti on canvas; “Atwuk” exhibited in VCU-Q and sold 9 paintings in 2 days.
The biggest misconception of a graffiti artist, or graphic designer?
The first misconception is when people associate graffiti to crime. The majority of my artwork is commissioned therefore rarely illegal. The worst misconception is when people advise me to focus on my graphic design degree because it’s a more ‘respectful’ career compared to being a graffiti artist.

One place you could recommend us to go and check cool graffiti out?
Drive in Doha by Aspire is a must see if you want a visual overdose of art/graffiti. I also recommend the Urban Jazz Kitchen at the Pearl, it has great ambience, a Jazz band every weekend and not to mention, my artwork!

GENERATION Q WE SHED LIGHT ON QATAR’S MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE WHO PROUDLY GIVE QATAR A VOICE.

Who am I? Just a little about me. My name is Thani Almudahka and I grew up in a family that encouraged me to always see the beauty that surrounded me in all areas of my life. In order to capture the magnificence of the world, I inhabited, I started painting and drawing all which I encountered. As my artistic talents grew I expanded my horizons and moved into the world of fashion. What do I do? After I made the decision to move into the world of fashion I set my sites on becoming a designer. I started working on making that dream come true and today I can proudly call myself a fashion designer. In the beginning I designed gowns and dresses for my family and now, I own my very own fashion boutique. I design for both men and women; everything from haute couture, ready-to-wear, to bags and accessories. Connect with me: Instagram: @thani_almudahka and @thani_almudahka_fashion How has the fashion scene in Qatar developed? I think my country is moving forward not only in fashion but also in the art industry. In terms of fashion, I would say that now you don’t have to travel to Europe to see what’s trendy or what’s new in fashion, because Qatar is growing into being one of the major destinations for designers and international brands. And testament to this is the fact that Qatar now owns some of the biggest companies in the world such as Valentino and Balmain.

The Social Media Influencer
Who am I? I am a 24-year-old social media influencer, who is popularly known within the social media scene as Koodiz, however to my family I am just Kholoud Al Ali.
What do I do? I am a lifestyle content creator and through the use of my Instagram and Snapchat platforms I communicate a certain message to my followers. I have been active on Instagram since 2009 – though my account was originally private after a year and with the encouragement and push from my friends, I decided to “go public” and started to really hone in my page to be what I would consider a creative outlet for my ‘visual art’ and with this focus I saw that I was gaining a rapid following; my audience range started widening and as a result brands and companies began to contact me to help them tell a story and bring their products and services to life. Overall, it is important that I create quality content that people want to see, that captures their attention and brings new ideas to them. I’m comfortable doing what I’m doing; there are no boundaries as long as I stay true to my persona. I strive to always keep it classy. Connect with me: Instagram: @koodiz and Snapchat: officialkoodiz How much has Qatar changed due to Social Media influencing? There is no doubt that social media has been a huge factor in the change and development of Qatar. I would say that social media platforms are being used to raise awareness of the lifestyle and positive transformation of Doha. This is particularly true as it relates to the fashion and beauty scene, once in a lifetime events and more importantly to highlight to the rest of the world the many great homegrown talent from Qatar.

I would recommend for the educative initiation to teach art history from early stage in schools. I think it is very important for children not only to produce art, but also to learn all about it, get educated in the different forms of art, the different periods and the diverse techniques of well known artists throughout history. Children are soaking all of this up and I feel they are so interested about what artists did, why they did it during that time and what emotions and lifestyles were they driven by – which reflects through their art.
Who am I? I am Afra Al Marri and I am considered as one of the most followed and renowned Qatari makeup artists here in Qatar, and have worked with brands such as Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, D&G, Make Up For Ever, NYX and recently Urban Decay and tarte cosmetics. What do I do? All things makeup and beauty is my forte. I graduated in the Art of Makeup from Tajmeel Academy – Qatar’s first beauty academy; therefore I am a professionally qualified Qatari makeup artist, specializing in bridal and private bookings. My career as a makeup artist has seen me working with local celebrities, to being the Director of Artistry & the Artist Relations Officer of GLACIER. As such, social media became integral to my work as it has pushed me to another level – to the level where I celebrated being Qatar’s only ‘Instagram Verified’ makeup artist. The highlight of my career to date has been to make my dream of opening my very own standalone beauty and spa center, which I made a reality in the summer of this year. Afra Beauty Center is 100% my baby, everything from the design and layup to the interior decorations – which I hand crafted some myself. Now I would say that I am no longer just a makeup artist, but an all rounded beautician, who ensures to provide clients traditional as well as new and innovative beauty, hair and spa services. My goal and plan is to hopefully open few more Afra Beauty Center’s in and around Doha. Connect with me: Instagram: @afrabeauty_ Snapchat: afra_makeupqa www.afrabeauty.com When it comes to makeup, what would you say is a typical ‘Qatari trademark’? For me, makeup should never be seen as a mask, instead, makeup is a form of art, passion and expression. Therefore the one main thing I always tell my Qatari clients is that there is no need any longer to feel you must over do it with makeup. The time where women felt that they had to hyper accentuate features, has come to an end and natural makeup is key, leaving room to maybe highlight one particular area of the face, which, for me it would be the eyes. The classic Smokey eyes is my all time favourite and I enjoy giving live tutorials on this look. Overall the key to a perfectly made-up face lies in the eyebrows.

Silvia Lago was born out a personal need. I couldn’t find shoes that were both stylish and comfortable to wear all day. I had to choose between sophisticated but uncomfortable stilettos or more wearable but less stylish high heels. I moved to Alicante in Spain, one of the world’s regions of luxury shoemaking, to learn the art of shoemaking and start a new shoe line that offered both elegance and wearability. With the help and advice of a team of shoe experts, podiatrists, last artisans and biomechanical experts, we have developed the first high heel shoes that improve comfort without sacrificing a sophisticated look.
Your biggest inspiration when designing?
My inspiration is the modern cosmopolitan woman. A lady who needs to be polished, comfortable and stylish in an effortless way. I always try to blend our comfort features with Spain’s luxury craftsmanship to bring wearability and style to the feet of the women on the go. I am also very inspired by the timeless elegance and chic style of the 40s and 50s, especially of the old Hollywood divas. Think of the effortless feminine style of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly.
LagosFit® technology, that features a reinforced structure, high performance cushioned insoles, anti-bacterial leather lining, stable heels with softer heel caps that are shock-absorbing and provide a more silent walk, soft leathers with natural stretch properties, etc.
One tip a girl should always remember when dressing?
Always look for fashion pieces that make you feel confident and empowered. It is important to feel at easy and comfortable with one’s outfit. With our shoe line of comfortable and stylish stilettos, we are trying to empower women to feel good so that they can achieve their potential and life goals. There shouldn’t be beautiful shoes that are not practical or uncomfortable. We are women on the go and we need our shoes to accommodate to our busy lives, not the other way around. We need fashion pieces that make us be more beautiful and comfortable in an effortless way, and comfortable shoes are a must.
My favourite pair is Valentina, a sophisticated suede d’Orsay pump with a metallic maxi-bow. I absolutely love it in both the fuchsia and yellow versions! Its comfortable block heel makes it perfect for day wear and the extravagant shinny bow will elevate any night ensemble as well. Equal parts feminine and sexy, with an alluring cut out, this shoe is a closet musthave. It is so versatile you can pair it with cropped jeans and a leather jacket in the morning or with you favourite silk cocktail dress at night. It has been a total hit this season, and everybody is loving it!
Why the choice to combine biomechanics with fashion?
If you could trade a shoe closet with someone, who would it be with?
Our brand was born with the idea of creating the first luxury shoe brand to blend both style and comfort. There is a need for wearable luxury high heels, but the traditional brands are not providing any solution. We are using the knowledge of biomechanical science to improve the comfort of high heel shoes. First, your weight is evenly distributed throughout the shoe and you stand stable and supported. As you walk, the shoe mitigates the impulsive load from your toe and heel-strike. And finally, the shape of the shoe effectively conforms to the shape of your foot as you move. We use a proprietary system, the
Your go-to shoe style?
My favourite style is always the d’Orsay style, a stiletto pump closed on one side with a sexy cut-out on the other side. Both Valentina or Valeria styles are great to elevate my office. I absolutely love its bright colours and shinny embellishments, they give a very sophisticated and feminine touch to all of my outfits.
Any future accessories from the brand?
We are very excited to be working on our future collection of sandals. Up until now we have focused on more conservative, closedtoe, shoe styles, but starting next season we will be ready to offer very sexy sandals and mules as well. We will be introducing brand new materials and shinny colours, so stay tuned! Get your glam shoes at : www.silvialago.com
You are launching your collection in the GCC very soon, what can we expect from it?
The Divas collection is all about timeless style, femininity and grace. Inspired by the old Hollywood glamour and its timeless divas, you will find effortlessly elegant silhouettes, chic maxi bows, extravagant shinny leathers, and very lively colours. My collection is a reflection of my customer’s life, 40 styles ranging from office day wear kitten heels to more elevated embellished night stilettos. Most of our styles are very versatile and easy to transition from office formal to off-duty style. All of our shoes are designed with the modern women in mind, to make her feel comfortable and beautiful at the same time. Note the stylish block heels for all day wear and the thin but stable stilettos to enjoy comfortably for all evening events.

Made in Qatar WITH HEYA EXHIBITION HAPPENING LAST MONTH, QH SAT DOWN WITH ENIGMATIC FASHION BRAND Q LABEL. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS STYLISH BRAND IN A Q&A. Being a new brand in Qatar, how was Q Label born? The idea of Q Label began last November when brainstorming on ideas of creating a modest, yet elegant fashion collection with timeless looks made in Qatar.
With a chic and sophisticated approach to Q L’s designs, what is the inspiration behind the brand and the new collection?
Q Label’s designs aims to infuse western minimalist with Arabian tradition. Our FW’17 collection was inspired by a ‘Winter in London’ using elegant and timeless silhouettes with soft and luxurious fabrics in rich colours layered with a sophisticated pastel palette. The use of beautiful pearl buttons was inspired by Qatar’s renowned pearl diving history, creating a chic finish to our pieces. We have also taken inspiration from Qatar’s National colour – burgundy– which you will find throughout our collection, a key colour trend this winter.
As a fashion brand, what is your take on Qatar’s fashion scene at the moment?
In Qatar and internationally we have seen a huge trend towards modest wear. It is a great time to launch our label particularly during Heya where we showcased in a fashion show alongside some of Qatar’s biggest fashion brands. We take pride in filling our customer’s need for modest wear with the highest quality fabrics and finishing, using international standards in our country.
What is your vision for Q Label in the near future? We are focused on being a renowned Qatari brand, both nationally and internationally as ‘made in Qatar’.
Celebrity’s closet you covet?
We really love the style of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Audrey Hepburn and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.
In your own words, what is fashion and what it represents to you?
Fashion makes women feel beautiful and stylish and at Q Label we like to make that easy for our customers offering timeless, elegant pieces, which you would treasure season upon season!

Haven’t we all encountered tiring days? Well, if you have, then a little bit of sparkle on your cheeks will do the trick. Apply on the highest point of your cheeks, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s bow for a glowing, fresh and dewy finish.
Holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a red lip. Keep your makeup minimal and opt for a bold pout and if feeling adventurous, play with hot orange, pink and even purple hues. Who said holidays are to be boring anyway?

Man Ray for NARS Holiday 2017 SOFIA GRANIELLO SITS DOWN WITH SAMANTHA QURESHI, NARS’ SENIOR MAKEUP ARTIST FOR AN ALL MAKEUP CHAT ON THE BRAND’S NEW HOLIDAY COLLECTION INSPIRED BY ICONIC ARTIST, MAN RAY. 52
The collection is quite vast, and I’ve brought my favourite items. The collection is very avant guarde and inspired by Man Ray, one of the most influential artists in the 20s. And Francois Nars has always been inspired by him, as they share the same vision with art, photography and it’s quite provoking. Man Ray worked a lot with textures, illusion and so does Francois.
BEAUTY TALK
Tell us about the Man Ray for Nars Holiday collection ?
lack of hydration – I use Aqua Gel Luminous mask, which is one of Nars’ skincare products, which sadly Qatar doesn’t carry. And, I use Radiant Creamy concealer and it’s probably the best product I’ve been using for years now.
How would you describe the collection?
It really represents Man Ray’s work especially when you look at textures, colours and with captivating hues – golden and gloss and with a new formula at NARS that is very skin-alike and it’s not powdery (overexposed glow highlighter).
Would you say this is your favourite product from the collection?
I would say so! I use all over my eyes, and cheeks – its quick and easy to use. I also use The Veil Cheek Palette, I travel with it all the time and it’s able to give your cheeks multi-dimension – which comes with a bronzer (Laguna with a new formula), blush and highlighter. I love to layer and play around – even if you add a lot it won’t matter and it won’t look ‘too much.’
Favourite makeup trend from 2017?
You want one only? Haha. What I’ve been loving and brought my attention was in ss’17, we had this gorgeous, beautiful glosses, satin skin. And I loved the overnight warm smoky eye, smudged smoky… very underground style, very me! And for summer, during backstage we used lipsticks as blushers, with a variation of blush and it’s something you can do in real life – it’s a great transition from runway to real life. And for winter, this season, I love using bronzer as blusher and a bold lip like burgundy hues.
And what trend you think should die for 2018?
I’m going be very honest, what I would say is the new makeup on social media. When I was growing up, it was all about real life makeup, and as time progressed makeup has shifted to Instagram. We are in a new era where beauty is completely different. But if I had to change something, it would be the extreme contouring! It works very well in the arena of social media, but in flesh, it doesn’t. We need to use the right amount of product for the correct face shapes and create a natural shadow. It’s all about balancing. Also makeup nowadays is all about heavy steps and you end up with a mask. We need to be more light-handed.
One product that never misses in your makeup bag?
Oh, it’s so hard to say one! Ok, I’m obsessed with skin care, so if it was skin care, you must prep your skin before makeup application. When I fly – since there is a

it would be the wagyu rib eye. This is one of my favourite dishes and it comes beautifully served with glazed baby beetroot, asparagus, new potato, pecorino quiche and blue berry sauce.
When did you know you wanted to be a chef ?
Anyone who comes in with a smile on their face, and a big appetite for quality, flavourful
After finishing high school and being inspired by all the wonderful dishes that my mother would prepare – using all the local spices and flavours, I decided to enrol in a culinary institute. Thus I started my culinary adventure in 1998 with the opening of a 5-star hotel located at the Eastern coast of Mauritius.
What is your favourite food memory growing up?
As I am from a tropical island, Mauritius, surrounded by the beautiful ocean, I love working with seafood. One of my favourite dishes is pan-seared toothfish with creamy chayote, buttered asparagus and red grapes coulis. It’s a special plate for me because I actually presented it in the Diyafa Culinary Competition 2012, and won the double gold.
At the restaurant, who would be your “ideal diner” and what experience can they expect?

What are your thoughts and feelings of being the culinary head of Qatar’s only revolving restaurant, Three Sixty?
Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind is how I am extremely proud to be here and to be part of an establishment that is so innovative to Qatar. Here at Three Sixty revolving restaurant we want all our guests to have the most memorable dining experience by providing the best hospitality service in Doha.

A LAZY LUNCH CONCEPT
ORYX ROTANA DOHA HOTEL IS BACK IN THE GAME WITH A FOODIE PROMOTION YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS. AND HEY, THE PRICES ARE FAB! The Lowdown
We are constantly on the hunt for that perfect food promotion that will be kind to our wallets and will help us blend into weekend-mode. Whether some venues are too pricy for our coin-box, or too regal for our weekend casual vibe, fear no more because Oryx Rotana Doha is now offering the perfect getaway for family and friends with a twist of casual, lazy, but fabulous all at the same time. Happening at The Cellar restaurant, the Lazy Lunch concept is all about unwinding to the week’s stress, busy schedules with delicious and hearty meals, great deals, and indulging in unadulterated fun.
So How Does it Work?
Lazy Lunch is available every Friday and Saturday from 3pm until 7pm. If you’re feeling like not packing on food calories, there is the two-course meal option for QR75, and if you opt for dessert too, take on its threecourse meal for only QR95. A la carte menu is also available for those who wish to order something a bit different from what’s being offered (we recommend the Beetroot Salad with Feta Cheese, Lamb Meatballs, and Fried Calamari). And because we are here to give you the scoop on what to choose from the menu, how they taste, and what you should be ordering next time you visit, we first started off with some great appetizers such as: the soup of the day – we had a delicious hearty vegetable soup (part of the lazy lunch promotion), and we also gave their a la carte a try and we opted for something light and fresh such as the Beetroot and Feta Cheese Salad. The perfect start to what was yet to come. As we continued our super lazy adventure, our main course was up next. We opted for something meaty (pasta of the day is also available for those who are vegetarian) and we gave the Grilled Chicken Supreme a go with baked potatoes, root vegetables, and mushroom cream sauce. The vegetables were just perfectly seasoned, grilled and were the perfect pair up to healthy and tasty chicken showered in mushroom sauce. And then, there was finally room for dessert. With so much anticipation we ordered a delectable Tiramisu and a Lemon Pie Meringue. Both were tasty, rich in flavour and both definitely satisfied our palate ending our evening on a fabulous note. Also, for those who wish to enjoy to a happier time, add QR90 to your meal and receive a three-hour of unlimited bubbly drinks.

HOT NEW DISH
TURKEY, ANYONE? INTERCONTINENTAL DOHA THE CITY GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON HOW TO PREP LIKE A PRO A DELICIOUS MEAL FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON. • • • • • • •
Turkey Roulade with brown Rice and Rhubarb-Cherry Stuffing, Honey glazed carrots, balsamic beets, Yorkshire puddings Whole Boneless turkey (4+5 kg) 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Rhubarb-Cherry Sauce
Cook the Turkey 1.
Preheat oven to 180C. Fit a shallow small roasting pan or baking dish with a roasting rack. 2. Place a piece of plastic wrap on a large cutting board. Place turkey flat on plastic wrap. Holding the blade of the knife parallel to the board, about halfway down, slice into the thickest portion of the breast. Cut along the length of the breast, but not all the way through. Unfold so the turkey opens like a book. Remove tough piece of cartilage. Cover with another piece of plastic wrap and pound with a meat mallet to an even thickness of 1 -11/2cm. 3. Remove top piece of plastic wrap and place turkey breast skin-side up on bottom piece of plastic wrap. Season with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Turn turkey breast skin-side down on plastic wrap. Season flesh side with remaining salt and pepper; spread stuffing evenly over turkey, leaving a 2 cm border. Starting with one short end, roll into a log, completely enclosing stuffing. Using kitchen twine, tie the roulade at even intervals so that it remains tightly rolled. 4. Rub roulade with olive oil and place on roasting rack. Transfer to oven and roast until golden. It will take approximately 1.45min Time to time pour over the baking liquid in order to keep it moist till the moment you will serve it.
Garnishes:
Honey glazed carrots Boil the carrots (baby carrots you leave as it is, big ones cut in equal sticks). In a pan melt a piece of butter and start tossing the carrots, season with salt and pepper, add couple of thyme strings, and finish it in the pan with a spoon of good quality honey. Keep aside. Balsamic beets Cut the beetroots in chunks, place them in a baking tray sprinkle with rock salt, ground pepper, thyme, olive oil and roast in oven till are soft. Maximum temp 140C do not colour them too much, as they need to be moist and tender.
62
Melt a knob of butter in a pan and add the beets, deglaze with balsamic vinegar and move around the beets till you have a nice glaze and vinegar has been evaporated. Yorkshire pudding In a bowl mix 3 equal parts of eggs (broken –liquid), flour, milk and season. Rest in the fridge overnight. Use muffin mold and fill each whole up to 1/3 of the height with corn oil. Heat up in hot oven 220C up to smoking point (monitor the smoking degree there is a danger point if left too long to catch fire). Fill up with the batter mix and close the oven door the quickest possible. Cook for 10-15min till the puddings has been risen well and then drop the temperature to 170-180C until achieved a golden brown colour. Curve the turkey roll in slices and baste with the cooking liquids, serve with the garnishes and the sauce.
Rhubarb-Cherry Sauce • • • • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup tawny port (optional) 1 cup dried sour cherries 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 cup chopped shallots 1 pound fresh rhubarb, trimmed and sliced 1 1/2 cups chicken stock 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Preparation 1. 2.
3.
In a small saucepan, heat port over medium-high heat until hot. Remove from heat, add cherries, and cover; let stand 15 minutes. Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add shallots and cook, stirring, until translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add rhubarb and cook, stirring, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer mixture to a large bowl; set aside. Add cherry-port mixture to skillet and let simmer for 1 minute. Add chicken stock, thyme, pepper, salt, and cloves; simmer until reduced by one-third. Whisk in butter, a few cubes at a time, making sure each addition is fully incorporated before adding the next. Return rhubarb mixture to skillet and let simmer for 1 minute. Serve immediately.

FROM HOW TO STAY ACTIVE THIS FESTIVE SEASON WITH BOUNCE FIT, TO AN EXCLUSIVE SIT DOWN WITH CO-FOUNDER OF EVERGREENS ORGANICS, JOUJOU, WE ARE GIVING YOU THE SCOOP ON HOW TO STAY BALANCED FOR A HECTIC MONTH AHEAD.
HEALTH FEATURE
FESTIVE BALANCE AS DECEMBER MARKS A MONTH OF CELEBRATION, FESTIVITIES AND OF COURSE THE IMMINENT CLOSING OF THE YEAR, FOR SOME IT MAY ALSO BE A MONTH OF STRUGGLE IN KEEPING LIFE AT A MANAGEABLE BALANCE. HEALTH AND FITNESS ENTHUSIAST HELENA OUN FOUNDER OF HEALTHYANDNOURISHED.COM, SITS DOWN WITH WELLNESS ACTIVIST JAWAHER AL FARDAN TO DISCUSS SIMPLE TIPS HOW TO BALANCE YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL.
Don’t Be Afraid Of The Journey
A healthy, happy mind can contribute to good health. Balanced living means having a positive outlook, focusing on good habits, and lowering stress. Considering all aspects of your life: relationships, work, fitness and health, and emotional well-being. Jawaher, Qatar’s truly remarkable fitness and wellbeing advocate believes that balance is sincerely an on going journey. Where some days, some weeks, some months, some phases are more balanced than others. Jawaher and I both see balance as something what will never be a stable place to be in, but the more you work towards it the easier it is to stay there. Balance is not a stagnant point or a destination, but an ongoing practice we all need to learn to achieve more or less. It’s not easy for any of us to keep this much-desired
66
HEALTH FEATURE
balance, but with regular practice and work we all can achieve it. If it would be simple we all would be healthy and balanced, and that’s why good things require more work on ourselves.
Amongst the Chaos, Make Time For A Workout
“We don’t walk around so much in Qatar,” said Jawaher. “We are always in the car. Yes we do workout, but its just one hour of the day, what about the rest of the hours?” Make sure you are keeping active throughout the day. Try to do physical activities. You don’t have to spend an entire day in the gym to keep yourself active. It is important to spend time with your family and so try and incorporate doing workouts with them as well; these festivity times why not dance and have fun with your family. Jawaher mentions that she always tries to dance as much as she can and make her family do fun activities together and even book a dance class at home to keep everyone involved with some fun physical activities. We often forget how important it is to keep ourselves moving. A good time with family doesn’t always need to be sitting around the table and indulging. We also need to keep in mind how to balance those beautiful dinner parties with activities all family members can be part of. Even having a walk together and enjoying outdoors will benefit all. Everyone needs to learn how to find different ways to keep them active throughout the day. Even simple things like while doing grocery shopping, carry your own bags to the car for some extra weight lifting, choose stairs instead of elevators if possible. These little tweaks here and there can make a huge change in the bigger picture.
Find Your Discipline Fine Line
I have been in a place in my life where I had to instill a sense of discipline to be healthy, to the point that enjoyment and indulgence became nonexistent. There’s a thin line of discipline we all need to find within ourselves which aids us in learning how to achieve our own levels of balance; Jawaher finds she needs to discipline herself a lot more to not step over this line. While having this wonderful conversation of all things health and wellness we truly realized how we kind of balanced each other out. “Its always about trying to find the middle ground” as Jawaher said. It is important to speak from the other side of the spectrum and do not let yourself feel boxed in with too many rules to stay healthy. Health and wellness should come from the place of enjoyment and you need to make the most out of your journey. Jawaher also mentioned Deen and Dunya from Islam. Deen is ‘religion’ and Dunya means ‘earth’. It is very important that you have both of these things. We must constantly and actively balance the responsibilities and devotion to our faith with our earthly needs and responsibilities. Yes to be disciplined, yes to try to control yourself, but definitely indulge a little bit. “The more Balanced I’m becoming, the less I’m craving for the things I used to like before. This makes being balanced a lot easier.”
Balance What You Feed Your Body
Jawaher and I both agreed that to truly know the feeling of nutrient rich healthy foods and how beneficial it is for our bodies, we need to let ourselves indulge a little to then be able to appreciate the difference. So to validate how really, really good healthy eating feels. It’s not always that easy to plan ahead. But make sure no matter when or what food you choose to indulge in, have it in the back of your mind to try and regroup the rest of your day with fresh, healthy and nutrient rich foods to balance out your indulgence. We need to be aware of what we eat and how it affects our bodies. It is completely fine to allow yourself to have whatever you crave – especially in this holiday season, but make sure you have your greens, your fresh vegetables and fruits, and healthy proteins to make your body feel wholesome, even with few bites of cheat meal. It is very important to not attach negative feelings to your cheat meals. No need to feel guilty for any of your meals during festivities, as these feelings will build up emotional stress, which may even lead to consuming more. It is important to be positive and have love for yourself. Taking care of your health needs to be filled with joy.
Setting Realistic Goals
During the festive season you should not be putting pressure on yourself to lose extra weight but rather, expect yourself to maintain your weight and just try to add in some extra workout sessions. No need for unrealistic goals while we are distracted with different festivities, family dinners etc. It is okay to let yourself enjoy it. As said before, we do not recommend anyone to build up stress. Feeling of disappointment with unrealistic goals will be demotivating and this is definitely something we do not encourage.
Stress will never allow you to achieve your goals like feeling free and enjoying the journey. Our body is so much smarter than we think. You need to learn to listen your body, what your body is capable and what your body needs. The same goes with finding the right workouts for yourself what your body likes. Your body is always asking for something, we need to learn to understand and give our body what it needs the most during that moment. Regular exercise is definitely one key part of balanced lifestyle. For a balanced workout Jawaher and I are both keen runners and yogis, whilst I enjoy bodyweight workouts, Jawaher is fanatic about spinning and credits Pilates as a firm favourite. We encourage a mentality of: “I want to workout, I can workout, I need to workout”, at all accounts try and avoid saying ‘I have to workout’. Being healthy is not that complicated, as it often might seem. We are all so unique in our own way. We encourage you to try different workouts, different health foods to find what works best for you. Keep trying what is most suitable for your body’s needs. What works for your friend, might not work for you. No need to find excuses, take your family and friends, go outside, enjoy quality time and stay active throughout this season. Jawaher Al Fardan – lovingly known as JouJou, is the founder of Niya Yoga center, co-founder of vegan cafe Evergreen Organics, both at The Pearl, spinning instructor at OX Fitness, The Gate Mall, and ambassador for Lululemon apparel.

What’s The Deal? The Organic AHA Paprika Facial (30 minutes, QR280 or 60 minutes QR550) Dull and dehydrated is my skin condition which led me to opt for the organic paprika facial, the treatment is designed to exfoliate, oxygenate, hydrate and even boost your skin’s complexion, all by using natural products like the fresh fruit pulp, seeds and fresh herbs, from the pioneer of the organic skin care and award winning beauty brand “Eminence”. Escorted to the treatment room, in the plush bed and the cozy ambiance under the full attention and care of the therapist, the process begins with cleansing, scrubbing and toning of the face so to remove all skin impurities. Then followed with the mask application, which is split into 3 steps: • • •
AHA Fresh Fruit Pulp Paprika Herbal Treatment Stonecrop Mask
The AHA fresh fruit pulp applied to is key for hydrating and protecting the skin; the smell alone is simply divine and I totally enjoyed the fresh scent that remained from it. With the paprika that was applied afterwards, it does give off a tingling hot sensation that actually cools down with the final application of the chilled Stonecrop mask. Helping to detoxify and renew the skin. Face, shoulders and head massage was the cherry on the cake, with just the right pressure to relieve my week’s stress and tension, I personally over enjoyed it and wished the massage could have gone on and on - therefore I will most certainly be back for a full body version of this massage.
The Round Up Glowing and genuinely soft, post-treatment the dark spots, blemishes and small pimples on my face have now faded. Not only does the treatment benefit the face and skin, but also the whole experience lifted both my mind and body. Overall, I left relaxed and my skin revitalized. Whether for a body massage, facial treatments or hammam relaxation, The Spa at Al Jasra Boutique Hotel is the perfect destination to relish and get an exquisite pampering.

Is 30 the New 20?
Or is 20 the New 30? AGE. YOU’RE ONLY AS OLD AS YOU FEEL, AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBER, WE’VE HEARD THEM ALL BUT...REALLY, IN 2017, WHAT IS AGE?

e live in a world where anything, (ok not anything, but an unbelievable number of potential possibilities exist), almost anything your imagination can conjure can appear. In our new Information Age where learning, socializing, travel and entrepreneurship are at a level never seen before nothing is off limits. Once upon a time, if you reached a certain age, that was it. The dream was over. Whatever it was, you had to find a new one and the options were limited. In a parallel universe, if you were of a certain age, you were told, you can do it when you’re older, or that’s not possible for you. Not anymore! Forget the negatives, for a moment. The information age we live in creates opportunities. You can learn so much, meet so many people, travel to so many different countries and start business or creative ventures that can reach the
world in seconds. The opportunities are almost limitless. The world literally can be your oyster. Things that we previously wouldn’t experience until our teenage years are now primary school playthings. The teenage years are populated by the concerns of young adults, and young adults are feeling the pressure, expectancy and responsibility of older generations much sooner. In other words, the youth of today are aging (mentally and socially) much quicker than before. Kids are not the same kids for as long anymore. A reality that we cannot avoid. Is it time to reassess the way we think? On the flip side, if you’re in your late 20s, are marriage and children still the immediate goal or have you carved out a niche, career or opportunity that just can’t wait? In your late 30s, looking for a different direction and realizing a career change

is not as problematic as it was 20 years ago, presents an interesting proposition. If you’re prepared, you can go for it, you may rekindle that verve you had in your early 20s as you take the full deep end plunge or dip your toe in the shallow end of a little hustle on the side. The chances are you will be mixing and blending with 20 somethings with that may reignite that verve you’re seeking. Is it time to rethink your direction? If you didn’t do what you wanted in school, that’s no longer the end. You can now renew your relationship with academia, taking online courses, attending adult education classes, or re-enrolling at university after that gap year turned into a gap decade. You can devour the reading on kindle, or engage in the latest craze of audiobooks. Learning is truly a lifelong phenomenon, and now everybody seems to recognize and appreciate that fact a little more. It just doesn’t stop unless you want it to. Is it time for you to go back to studying? Socializing is revamped. Due to the easy access to information, young people have caught up (and arguably surpassed) older people in terms of knowledge, awareness and vicarious experience, (they were already ahead in styles, trends and innovation), so mixing and blending as a natural consequence blurs the lines of age. Young people hit you with vocabulary that makes you question your own lexicon. So now, especially online, if your conversation holds up, you’re in. Trends change so quickly now it’s not about ‘that’s for old people’ and ‘that’s for young’. People are more accepting now and with social media the melting pot is now cooking with gas. If you’re with it and you can keep up, so be it. Is it time for you to diversify your social circles? In this new individual world, people are taking a new look at every aspect of their lives. That includes age, you can’t define the circles a self-made 21-year old internet millionaire should move in and you definitely, shouldn’t cap their identity by age. Nor should you define that 30 something as past it. With the speed of the world right now, they can easily ‘get with it’ real quick and blow right past you. It seems you are not too old or too young to do anything now. Is 30 the new 20 or is 20 the new 30? I don’t know, the point is, it’s sometimes hard to sometimes know which is which as each of us invade the previously exclusive playgrounds of the other.

STEP INTO A WORLD OF WONDERS NEW TO DOHA’S SKYLINE IS THE LATEST HOTEL OFFERING TO THE CITY, THE FALCON SHAPED MONDRIAN DOHA. EMBARKING ON A STAYCATION OF A LIFETIME AT THIS LANDMARK ESTABLISHMENT, EXECUTIVE EDITOR, HARRIET GYAMFUAH TAKES US THROUGH ALL ITS MANY WONDERS.
The Lowdown In all fairness, the Mondrian Doha needs no introduction, it has been, and in fact it is still the talk of the town, and anyone who is anyone has been eagerly anticipating its opening. With its location situated right by Lagoona Mall, the Mondrian Doha is flanked by Qatar’s latest urban development Lusail City on one side and the marina on the other; a combination of the best of Doha. However, the surrounding neigbourhood or the exterior of the hotel did little to prepare me for what was waiting for me when I stepped through the hotel doors, immediately entering a dream-like world conceived by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. Think Alice in Wonderland-style fantasy with baroque styling, the design of Mondrian Doha is inspired by ‘1001 Nights’ by Femke Hiemstra to truly tickle your conceptual imagination. From the glaringly white and gold lobby to the iconic black spiral atrium staircase, entry into the hotel left me mesmerized and eager to be amazed by every nook and cranny of it.
Take a Peek Into My Room
Enroute to the rooms, even the hotel’s elevator design features are optically intriguing with its Arabian influences within the mosaic tiling. The artwork in the elevator itself is mysterious and captivating and again, pays homage to Qatar. My room for the night was the standard guestroom and I was pleasantly amazed by its modern, sleek and semi-open room plan. The room is bright and white yet furnishings are peppered with neutral colour palettes likened to that of the desert. Unquestionably, with its ‘at-a-touch-of-abutton’ mod cons, the room has been set up and designed for maximum convenience as well as for comfort. Give me a USB port socket in the headboard and I am a very happy guest, but give me two, and you certainly earned yourself a golden badge! And this is exactly the case for Mondrian Doha. First impressions would be that everything about the room echoes a sense of modernity and youthfulness, with even the piped upbeat music reaffirming this and creating a contagiously energetic ambiance. Whichever one of the 211 bedrooms or exquisite 59 suites that you choose to stay in at the Mondrian Doha, the one common thread which runs is the pristine white palette of the interiors which has been brilliantly juxtaposed with a singular bold artistically papered wall.

Come Dine with Me
Mondrian Doha currently offers three dining restaurants: Morimoto, CUT by Wolfgang Puck and Hudson Tavern, with a further one on the horizon to be opened, Walima. Also, the hotel’s lobby gives home to the much loved dessert franchise Magnolia Bakery in its lounge. My evening at the Mondrian Doha can only be described as starting off with taking a bite out of ‘The Big Apple’; heading to Hudson Tavern is as good as heading to downtown New York. The dimly lit bar has all the warm trappings of a fun, casual diner, its atmosphere likened to popular American TV show ‘Cheers’. A laid-back drinking hole that serves unpretentious yet a robust beverage menu, Hudson Tavern is as great for its drinks as it is for the hearty food platters served - don’t forget you are in New York after all! Next stop for the evening was an immediate culinary transportation from New York to Tokyo, and it was as easy as walking 20 feet down the corridor to Morimoto. If you’re seeking a lavish Japanese dining experience in a five-star setting, look no further than Morimoto, the signature Japanese dining venue of celebrity Chef Masaharu. It being my first time to the restaurant and excited to try everything, I was more than happy to play the role of ‘nomad diner’, getting to taste an assortment of everything from across the wide-ranging menu. And it surely didn’t disappoint. As one by one what followed was not just merely food, but what can be easily described as culinary art, sheer masterpieces in both appearance and most certainly in taste. To highlight some of the standout dishes is tough, as each offering seemed to top the one before. The Oyster Foie Gras: succulent and flavoursome, the Toro Tartare with its selection of condiments: delicate and truly unique, Hamachi Tacos: an explosive taste
twist on a Mexican dish. And we were only on the appetizers. The Sushi and Sashimi was authentic. It came with homemade light soy sauce. The fish was fresh. Special kudos to the rice: it was firmly packed - not a grain dislodged when eating it or using the soy and you could feel the little pearls of every grain of rice in your mouth. Awesome. Surf and Turf: Braised Lamb Shank and Braised Black Cod. The lamb was tender and the cod, just simply magically in its juicy ginger-soy glaze. Dessert was fantastic – however at this point in the dinner I was at a lost for words to describe the amazing assortment of flavours that my taste buds were being treated to. The Chocolate Sphere, served with warm rosewater chocolate sauce is sinfully delightful and again, served in such an art form that it was almost evil to have to deconstruct and devour! The entire dining experience left me quite literally dumbfounded and speechless, which I am sure that my adorable (and might I say, very knowledgeable) waitress Iness, must have humoursly picked up on. The whole evening was incredible with an impeccable cuisine that was fantastic in quality and masterfully plated. For me, Morimoto lived up to its expectations, and maybe even surpassed it.
Extra Touches The collective design details of the hotel such as its crystal chandeliers and black-andwhite floorings present this hotel as a visual feast of fascination. It continues on to the 26th floor where the rooftop pool can be found. The Mondrian Doha’s pool, which is strikingly psychedelic with its elaborate floral stainedglass ceiling and hedgerow bridge I would say, is one of the hotel’s awesome trump cards; the heavenly bubble that is the ESPA spa, comes a very close second.
The Round-Up Kudos to Marcel Wanders who quite literally has constructed a world of wonders. An enthralling space that leaves no stone unturned when it comes to design aesthetics, luxury and offering a complete lifestyle experience. Highly recommended, the Mondrian Doha should be on everyone’s staycation wish list, and if not that, then a date night visit to one of the restaurants. The hotel has arrived with a vibrant bang and in its opening wake, it has set the benchmark for personality, style, service and dining; an all round hospitality dreamland.

hether you arrive on a sleek Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo, or on a more traditional carriage from Osaka, your first glimpse of the city will usually be Kyoto train station. One of the largest in the world, this giant futuristic glass structure is a statement of the city’s modernity and for many a symbol of Japan’s technologically advanced urban landscape. But this is not enough to take away from Kyoto’s cultural heritage that goes back over a thousand years. With ancient structures still standing and time-honoured practices alive and well, the capital of “peace and tranquility” is more than just a whisper of the nation’s past.
At a Glance
Zen gardens, ancient temples, kimono-clad geisha, clouds of bursting cherry blossoms... these are some of the evocative images that Kyoto has exported to the world. If you search hard enough, this is just what you will find, yet as those who have truly come to appreciate the culture will tell you, Kyoto is more than just a sum of these iconic images. A deep and complex network of cultural traditions and history exists for those willing to take the time to truly experience what this city has to offer.
Capital of “Peace and Tranquility”
Many visitors remark on how Kyoto seems to move at a slower pace than other cities of its size and population, yet this calmness may seem hard to explain. Perhaps it is the contrast to the bustle of Tokyo’s neon lights and skyscrapers, or the typically reserved nature of the citizens? Maybe. For those willing to indulge, a better answer may lie in an understanding of the city’s heritage. As the imperial capital for more than a thousand years, once called Heian-kyō “peace and tranquility capital”, Kyoto is still home to over 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. These relics, spared from destruction during WWII from US bombings, are physical remnants of a time before mass urbanization and development. Thus, it can be said that the city’s pre war identity and its peaceful soul originating from ancient dynasties have survived till today.
Where to go
Located in the Kansai region, Kyoto is compact and flatly laid out in a grid pattern, surrounded by mountains that have historically protected the valley. The central district is easy to navigate because of these features as well as a simple subway system inspired by feng shui - consisting of only two main lines. A downside however, is that due to the order and uniformity of central locations, you might find it is easy to get lost. Making a list of the temples you want to see is a good starting point for planning your itinerary, but be careful not to overload yourself. During peak season, and despite the city’s inherent “calmness”, navigating the crowds of tourists
84
Other must-see sites are the golden temple of Kinkakuji, perfectly reflected in its surrounding pond, and Arashiyama, an area of extraordinary beauty where Japan’s most famous bamboolined path can be found. Or maybe a night in a traditional ryokan inn could be the ultimate complement to your trip?
Old and New
Where Tokyo is truly Japan’s modern metropolis, Kyoto does well to preserve its identity as the spiritual and traditional capital, blending old with new. An emergence of newer buildings, ultra modern glass and metal structures, a high concentration of malls and shopping districts, and thriving technology everywhere, are a clear sign of the times, but while much of the world seems to pioneer advancement and technology for its own sake, there are few cities that balance the old and the new as well as Kyoto.

Then after, retreat to the city and spend your evening strolling around the streets of Gion (your best chance for catching a glimpse of the famous Geisha), or instead, find a cozy nook where you can enjoy some of the city’s famous cuisine - a reason many visit Kyoto in itself.

The Lowdown
The restaurant is centered in a converted beautiful, yet traditional Swiss farmhouse; an ode to simplicity sprinkled with elegance. The restaurant is located on a single lane, winding road so trust your GPS Navigator. In the summer months the atmosphere changes to a more relaxed dining experience. The blue sky, and the green meadows, makes a perfect contrast to the towering mountains in the distance. Diners may enjoy sitting outdoors to fully experience the clean, fresh air Switzerland is famous for. After dinner, many diners have been known to stroll through the farm, enjoying the livestock, or walking leisurely though the park that is adjacent to the restaurant.
The Menu
The menu, while varied, centers on traditional European meals, with a French flair. One of Smolinsky’s signature dishes is the Vegetable Ravioli, which is prepared daily, by hand. Be prepared to pay approximately $66 per dish, and it is well worth it! As you open the menu, which is in German, you will find an assortment of culinary choices accompanied by a wide variety of vegetable side dishes. And, do not despair if your German skills are lacking as the waiter happily explained everything in English that was on the menu and even suggested some choices not listed. The seasonal choices are unique, such as the veal and the Bison. Here are some wonderful dishes that you may enjoy: • Spicy Curry Soup with Scampi • Ravioli with Perigord Truffle Sauce • Venison Stew with Autumn Vegetables Precaution: it’s a must to leave room for dessert.
The Roundup
You will find upon entering Smolinsky’s white linen covered tables in a large wood framed room with ample views of the surrounding countryside through the large windows. However, should you choose a more private setting in one of the smaller rooms off the main dining room prepare to bend down as you enter the room as the door sills are rather low reminiscent of the building style of long ago.

MIX Bar, Lounge and Terrace Comes To Life! The lively and soulful affair that gives a new heart to Doha’s social scene is back and even better than before! The relaunch of MIX Bar at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa brought together live DJ set, vocalist and mixologists all working their magic on the scenic terrace.
