DJ Katie Smiles brings the beats to Doha As told to Luciana Cunha Franca Pictures courtesy of Grand Hyatt Doha

The resident DJ at Grand Hyatt Doha shares her signature style of house music to make Doha’s nightlife an unforgettable global mix experience. ith over 14 years’ experience bringing beats to top venues around the world, Katie Smiles has gained a reputation for being one of the most charming international house music DJs.

W

Katie Smiles’ passion for house music began in her teens when she began collecting house records and learning the art of her craft. After being trained at Point Blank, one of London's top DJ academies, growing up in the UK capital afforded Katie the opportunity to host club nights and gain experience at some of London's most popular bars and clubs.

It is Katie’s love of house music and DJing that keeps her focused on further developing her career. Katie's outgoing and bubbly persona is obvious while she is entertaining an audience with her memorable soundtracks, and her interaction with the crowd is magnetic. Whilst always adapting her sets to suit the needs of her clientele, Katie’s DJ sets consist of pure and uplifting house music, old and new, with vocals, piano riffs, and baselines aplenty.

She carries a professional, friendly, and positive attitude with her wherever she goes. It is Katie's genuine passion for music and for pleasing the

She grew up with labels such as Defected, Def Mix, Strictly Rhythm, Z Records, Purple Music, and Soulfuric forming a staple part of her musical palette, and continues to be inspired by DJ’s such as Joey Negro, Dimitri from Paris, Grant Nelson, Erick Morillo, and the late Frankie Knuckles. Katie's DJ repertoire encompasses house music in its many forms. Her sets range from disco to soulful, funky, classic house, and on to deep and electro beats. She can easily adapt her style to suit the event, always focusing on developing a connection with the crowd. As Katie continues to be as enthusiastic about music today as she was when she first stepped behind the decks, she is rapidly growing in international popularity as one of the UK’s finest homegrown female house music DJs.

SPECIAL PROMOTION

PURE a rooftop lounge reaches for the stars

By day, it’s a venue that provides breathtaking views of the old and new quarters of the city; by dusk, it becomes a party place that’s open to the fresh air and the night sky.

D

oubleTree by Hilton Hotel’s Pure is a rooftop bar overlooking the West Bay skyline of Doha and the magnificent Persian Gulf.

After a successful first year, Pure is aiming to become Doha’s number one rooftop bar, with a wide array of drinks, delicious finger foods, and a recently added shisha menu that bestows a special Arabic touch to the outlet. The venue is used as a swimming area during the day and is turned into a party location from the early evening onward. The crowd is mixed. Have you heard the saying “I’d rather have a passport full of stamps than a house full of stuff”? That is the perfect description of the guests that gather at Pure – quite a few airline personnel as well as teachers and hoteliers.

14

How to enjoy the Pure experience Come to Pure in the late afternoon and witness the sun set over the city. When the sky is painted in the brightest pink and orange, and the city lulls itself to sleep, it is time for a shisha. Take a deep breath, inhale and exhale, and let the night carry you away. As soon as one of the waiters approaches you, he might suggest a Bellini (a peach-based drink) or an Orange Creamcicle (a drink with vanilla flavour) to kick off the night. Happy about the suggestion, you and your friends go ahead and order a round. Cheers to us! As you look around the lounge you notice more and more people entering. Some of them start to dance. You think it might be too early, given the fact that it’s just 9:00 PM. But hey – happiness needs to be shared. Spread the joy everywhere you go.

You look around. The crowd is getting larger and the bar starts to fill up. You see the bartender mixing the most colourful drinks you have seen for a while. Unsure how your group should proceed with the evening, you perk up when the bartender asks, “Hey, would you like to try a little something I made especially for you guys?” Of course you try it. Now it’s 11:00 PM and the music starts capturing your attention. Those heels are made for dancing! Hours later, you know this evening will have its grand finale very soon. You end the night with a Midnight Kiss - one of the bar’s signature sips - and the next morning you will go online and check the next week’s events. And who knows, maybe it will be your picture that is chosen to be on the online cover page.

ENTERTAINMENT

Nightlife in Doha Carlo Scavone started his career in entertainment at a young age. He started organising parties and events when he was in high school. After that, he started volunteering for concerts and shows to pursue his love for music. Over the years, he developed a passion for events management.

Words by Razi Al Islam Photo credit: Carlo Scavone

QH asks St. Regis Doha events manager Carlo Scavone for his insight into the local party scene – where it’s been, where it’s going, and what’s up for 2017.

T

St. Regis is known for hosting some of the most exciting events in Doha. So it’s no surprise that last December 8, The Rooftop in St. Regis hosted a performance by Martin Solveig, a French DJ well known for his eccentric, upbeat, and unique style of electronic dance music (EDM). Over a thousand enthusiastic and lively EDM fans packed the venue and reveled in the electrifying atmosphere. Needless to say, the show was a great success. The mastermind behind the event was Carlo Scavone, the events manager for St. Regis.

16

After graduating with a law degree from university, Scavone left Italy to chase his dream of working with international artists. He has travelled the world for 14 years, working with well-known organizations and musicians and has been the events manager for St. Regis at Doha for four months now. During that time, Scavone brought in many renowned artists into Doha such as DJ Falcon, Dennis Ferrer, and of course, Martin Solveig. Scavone described the Solveig show as something that “no one ever attended” before in Doha. According to Scavone, the energetic and warm welcome of the crowd convinced Martin to “come back soon” to Doha – that’s something to look forward to in the near future. Comparing Doha to all the other places where he has worked so far, Scavone says “It is an electrifying moment now to live in (Doha) because the entire nightlife scene is growing and evolving.” He adds that the club scene in Doha has a cleaner energy and encourages various genres of music and cultures, whereas a lot of places Scavone worked in before preferred certain specific

genres. Therefore, Doha can be seen as one of the fastest growing and nourishing places for the club scene. Scavone promises that “2017 will be as rich as the previous seasons,” which fills us nightlife lovers with excitement. Unfortunately, he could not disclose any of the events that are currently being planned. However, all hope is not lost! Anyone who is interested, and certainly, any music and club lover, should follow St. Regis on their social media platforms as they will be announcing the events there. This means that we can expect to have another fun and exciting year in this city. So, party hard, and (for most of us) party halal, Doha! n

Jokesters serve giggles & guffaws As told to Luciana Cunha Franca Images courtesy of The Social Studio

The Social Studio and Shop Qatar present the first winter edition of Doha Comedy Festival. Expect the wittiest regional and international comedians to sling rib-tickling jests that will have you rolling around in the aisles.

Laughter is the best medicine,” they say, and if you’ve been feeling the winter blues lately, sign up for side-splitting sessions with the region’s and the world’s foremost comedians at the Doha Comedy Festival (DCF) - they’re just what the doctor ordered!

18

Qatar Tourism Authority announced that as part of the month-long Shop Qatar festival, the first-ever winter edition of the DCF will take place from February 2-4 at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) theatre. The three-day comedy festival will bring together a special lineup of 15 stand-up comedians from nine countries. According to each comedian’s repertoire and style, the three nights have been themed Arab (Feb. 2), Khaleeji (Feb. 3) and International (Feb. 4). The impressive lineup of stars includes the host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, and the winner of America’s Got Talent, Paul Zerdin, who will both be coming to Qatar for the first time and performing at the DCF’s International Night. DCF is presented by QTA and organised and produced by The Social Studios. The last edition of DCF, held during the Qatar Summer Festival (QSF), drew over 4,000 fans. QTA PR and Communication Director Saif Al Kuwari said, “Shop Qatar features a multitude of activities making it much more than a shopping festival. Based on the huge success we have seen for DCF in the past few years, the inclusion of this comedy event in Shop Qatar’s entertainment line-up is expected to draw large crowds of fans from across the region.” He added, “We have been proud to support DCF since its inception, especially as comedy is a positive means for shedding light on social issues and plays an important role in building bridges between cultures.” Commenting on the rationale behind holding this festival, The Social Studio Managing Director Hamzeh Zahr said, “Playing host to one of the region’s largest comedy shows demonstrates Qatar’s growing prominence on the global cultural map. Comedy in this region was and is a part of our collective cultural heritage and the spread of stand-up comedy is testament to the flourishing of Arab artistic talents. Its popularity presents a golden opportunity for reaching out to younger generations and creating a positive impact that encourages them to pursue a future that values innovation for success.”

BE ITALIAN FOR ONE NIGHT

Words by Paulo Fugen Pictures by Jessie Palanca

Italian culture has its own fabulous nightspot in Doha! The world famous Antica Pesa restaurant accomplished this by transforming its lounge bar and terrace, and QH set out to try this cultural experience.

A

s we set foot into the restaurant, we are immediately struck by its ambience. The walls are adorned with pictures and paintings of Italian cities and its countryside, along with shelves stocked with tiny models of sports cars and books dedicated to famous brands like Ferrari and Dior. Our host, Claudia, greets us a with a warm welcome and takes us to the elevator, asking us about our day while giving out instructions to her co-workers in Italian. As soon as we step out the elevator door, the atmosphere shifts. Smooth beats fill the lounge as we take our place in the plush chairs arranged at our table. DJ Freddie, who the restaurant calls upon for special nights like these, intends to start the night slow, but at a pace that gets people swaying to the music in their seats.

20

We wander outside to admire the view. The Antica Pesa is a part of the glamorous Marsa Malaz Kempinski, and it sits on an island just off The Pearl’s Costa Malaz Bay. The result is a spectacular view that is unrivaled, with gorgeous views stretching out to the horizon.

stuffed olives combined with spicy mayonnaise make for an amazing flavor in our mouths. For drinks, we try their interpretation of the Mojito, although Vince makes sure to point out the other exotic concoctions they have on their menu.

After heading back inside, we decide to start off with food and drinks. The restaurant has Happy Hour prices from 9:00 PM until midnight and no entrance fee, making this monthly event a great way to indulge in the luxury of The Pearl without breaking your wallet! However, you do need to dress nicely; they have a smart casual dress code.

The night continues, and the DJ steadily injects life into the party, infusing ‘80s Italian dance beats with modern hits. The beats become much more intense, bringing guests to their feet.

The menu is complete with Italian cocktails and appetizers. Some of the recommended favorites are the Bruschettas, with a chunky tomato and cheese topping, and the Pizza Margherita, with a delightfully crunchy crust. My personal favorite is the Olive Asconi – these beef

However, the atmosphere remains relaxed; the lighting is dim, bathing the couches and seats in a warm light that encourages a more intimate mood. The lounge and terrace offer excellent spots to catch up with friends while accompanied by music you can either dance or relax to. Later in the night, waiters patrol the floor with trays offering us cannoli, with a wonderful soft crust and smooth vanilla cream in its centre. The staff have

made an exceptional effort to help us get the best of Italian culture, and we find ourselves craving more. The Be Italian For One Night Party happens every month at the Antica Pesa. The theme changes for every event, with DJ Freddie preparing beats to reflect different aspects of Italian culture. n

n these increasingly fragmented times, it's important to come together and remind each other of our shared humanity, that we have more in common than we might think, and what better way to accomplish this than through comedy. The Laughter Factory, the Middle East's longestrunning comedy night since 1997, brings to Doha in February three of their favourite stand-up comedians on the planet: consummate Canadian Peter White, British-Nigerian sensation Funmbi Omotayo, and high-octane Aussie A-lister Damian Clark. Peter White In 2005, just a year after starting his career, Peter White was recognised as one of the “Top five upcoming Comedians in Canada by national CBC Radio.

Funmbi Omotayo

Damian Clark His style has been described as “slyly selfdeprecating stage shtick,” that finds the funny in the mundane moments which make up the life of a 21st century man. With an acerbic, fish-out-of-water manner, Peter has proved a hit on previous Laughter Factory tours, and knows exactly what he's letting himself in for. An A-list comic in Canada, White has headlined all of Canada’s major comedy festivals, earned a place in London’s competitive club scene, and filmed slots for Comedy Central’s Comedy Store Live. Funmbi Omotayo Putting the “fun” in “Funmbi,” Omotayo's relaxed, charming delivery has made him one of the premier London comics today. Calm, collected, and always in control, he spins stories with a gentle pace and friendly face, factors that made him the winner of the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year competition in 2012. With a disarming delivery and perfect pacing, Funmbi has proved TV comedy gold, bagging slots on Comedy Central at The Comedy Store, Sniggers With Attitude, and MTV's Tramadol Nights. Last year he made a strong showing with his Edinburgh Fringe debut, a lauded solo show entitled

Legal Immigrant which told the tale of his family’s move, following their roots from Hackney to Lagos and back again. Damian Clark Damian Clark is what you might call a “comedian's comedian” – a man with friends, and fans, in very high places. These include Kevin Bridges, who hailed Damian as “infectious, hilarious and highly recommended,” and Jack Dee, who assessed this raw, rambunctious comedic talent as “mad as a box of lights.” Currently based in Ireland, Damian has roundly conquered his adopted home, with featured slots on RTE's Republic of Telly, TV3's The Apprentice: You're Fired!, as well as writing and co-starring in Ireland's highest-ranked sitcom, I Dare Ya! But performing live, he is at a whole other level. Uncontrollably exuberant, in-your-face and taking no prisoners, Clark needs to be seen, and heard, onstage to be believed. You have been warned.

We reckon there's nothing better than comedy to crush barriers and break ice – seriously, who doesn't enjoy a laugh? – so if you're searching for some much-needed proof that we can all rub along together in these most trying times, come and have a cross-cultural laugh with these three hilarious humorists this February. n

HEREKE REKE CARPET PET Exhibition

The

A selection of the finest fiber art

Exhibition

Words by Jenny Ortuoste Pictures courtesy of ADABISC

The Gate Mall, Salam International Investment, Ltd., and Han Hali of Turkey, the leading production house of Hereke carpets, partnered to stage the display of these fabulous textiles in Doha last month.

T

he carpet exhibition was the culmination of The Gate Mall’s Art Season initiative that began in October 2016 and lasted until the end of January this year. Hereke carpets: legendary quality Soft, thick, carpets, the kind that grace the floors of only the finest homes and buildings in the world, were displayed all over The Gate Mall’s Maysaloun Hall from January 11 to 31. ne of the carpets was laid flat on the floor because O of its huge size. It was perhaps 20 by 30 feet, if not larger. In the center was an intricate medallion of flourishing vines and sinuous curves on a ground of florals dominated by beige, tan, chocolate. The whole was framed by a floral border of delicate greens and pinks.

36

Han Hali, the creators of the carpets displayed at The Gate Mall, have developed a portfolio of over 25,000 exquisite carpet designs, ranging from classical Hereke with fabulous Ottoman motifs to Turkish-Islamic designs that celebrate the illustrious transition to Islam. A legacy of heritage and tradition At the event’s opening, Salam International Chairman and CEO Mr. Issa Abdul Salam Abu Issa said, “Salam International is truly proud to support The Gate Mall in its efforts to enrich and elevate the art and culture environment in Qatar through initiatives like this. ll the carpets were marvelously soft to touch, and A one can imagine how they would feel underfoot – tender as clouds, luxurious as a fur coat. It was evident that the highest standards of craftsmanship were observed in the creation of all the pieces on display.

“The Hereke Carpet exhibition gives people a reason to revisit a rich historical legacy of the region and truly appreciate stunning craftsmanship. The history behind creating this particular type of carpet goes as far back as the mid-15th century.

n interesting part of the exhibit was a A demonstration of carpet weaving. The weaver, clad in a traditional costume and seated before a large wooden frame, swiftly knotted a colorful array of silk threads into a complicated design.

“A glance around the display will confirm that most of these modern pieces on display have taken artists over six years or more to create because they have followed a timeless tradition and revived a glorious artistic heritage that is genuinely breathtaking.”

The history of Hereke carpets Hereke carpets are made in Hereke, a coastal town in Turkey about 60 kilometers from Istanbul. The materials used to weave these fiber artworks are silk and wool, usually on a base of cotton for stability and reliability. Camel hair has also been used, and the luxury versions incorporate gold and silver threads in their designs.

Also among those present at the grand opening of the exhibition were Algerian Ambassador Abdul Aziz Sabe, Palestinian Ambassador Munir Ghannam, British Ambassador Ajay Sharma, Han Hali owner Erhan Or, Salam International Deputy COO Abdul Salam Abu-Issa, and from the Turkish Cultural Center, Dr. Mehmet Aykaç, along with other guests. n

T he Hereke Imperial Manufacture was founded in 1841 by the Ottoman sultan Abdülmecid I to provide textiles for his Dolmabahçe Palace on the Bosphorus. He gathered the best artists and carpet weavers of his empire in Hereke where they began producing high quality rugs and large carpets with unique patterns. Later Ottoman rulers gave the carpets as gifts to selected visiting dignitaries. Hereke carpets are historic masterpieces that adorn the most distinguished locations in the world, among them Buckingham Palace, the White House, Château de Versailles, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Carpets of smaller dimensions were hung on white display walls, the better to show off their complex designs and glowing colors. y favorite was a wall hanging that bore a pictorial M design of a man in a turban and robe, holding a staff or rolled-up scroll behind his back, peeking under a rich emerald archway supported by deep cobalt blue walls while four turtles massed around his feet. What was the story behind the picture? I wish I could have afforded to purchase that particular carpet and find out the story behind its design. lso quite striking was a carpet that showed A archways of burgundy and ultramarine against a background of brown, tan, and rust. Other carpets bore repeating patterns with burnt orange, mustard yellow, and other colors derived from nature.

Hereke carpets: how they are made The 100 percent handmade Hereke silk carpets carry 64 knots and overloops per centimeter, making each a tribute to the patience of its weaver. A Hereke weaver is said to tie at least one million knots in a finished carpet while crafting extremely intricate, fine designs. The precision of their double knots - Turkish or Ghiordes knots – which clearly display the pattern, along with their vibrant colour combinations and one-of-a-kind designs, have made these carpets highly collectible.

SHOP QATAR A new festival promises fun, prizes – and shopping Words by Wajeeha Malik Photography by Paulo Fugen

Get ready to shop till you drop! The first edition of Shop Qatar kicked off with flair and fireworks at the Mall of Qatar in support of the country’s business and tourism endeavors. Enjoy discounts, comedy shows, and more up to February 7!

A

n ambitious new retail festival, Shop Qatar, launched its first edition on January 7 with a concert and entertainment display at the newly-opened Mall of Qatar.

Entertainment galore

The free concert led by acclaimed Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi was the highlight of the opening ceremony, which included a performance by local comedian Hamad Al-Amari, who will also be performing at the Doha Comedy Festival, which is part of Shop Qatar. The event was inaugurated by Rashed Al Qurese, Chief Marketing and Promotion Officer at Qatar Tourism Authority, and Ahmed Al Mulla, CEO, Mall of Qatar. The opening ceremony started after 6:00 PM and showcased an aerial show where the banners for the festival were unfurled, a flash mob dance, and traditional sword dancing by local performers that got the crowd hyped up for the festival. Dozens of people surrounded the Oasis area of the Mall of Qatar, whipping out their phones to capture the fireworks and musical performances. At 8:00 PM, the concert by Fahad Al Kubaisi began when the singer emerged on the stage.

Q & A WITH SHOP QATAR QH spoke with Shop Qatar spokesperson Saif Al Kuwari to find out more interesting facts about the festival. QH: What is the meaning of the slogan "A Brand New Tradition" for Shop Qatar? SAK: We all have an event that we are used to attending year after year, and it marks an annual tradition that we look forward to, whether it is the Qatar International Food Festival, which is entering its eighth year, the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, which is this year in its 14th edition, or even the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, which this year celebrated its 25th anniversary. All of these events, at one point, were brand new and their organizers were inviting people to add them to their plans. We are inviting people to welcome Shop Qatar into their annual calendars, and assure them that even though it’s in its first edition this year, we are working to ensure it will one day be one of those traditions. Since it is a shopping festival that features offers on many consumer brands, we also wanted to play on the word ‘brand.’ We believe that what makes Qatar an attractive tourist destination is its positioning as a modern hub with deep cultural roots. As such, the Qatar Tourism Authority strives to ensure that our cultural roots are woven through all of our different festivals and events.

Discounts, prizes, and more

The festival aims to focus on Qatar’s retail and entertainment offerings, and celebrate it with Qatar’s residents and visitors. Shop Qatar offers many activities and enticing offers, including discounts & prizes, entertainment for the whole family, and popup shops. The festival will be providing amazing discounts of up to 50 percent in ten malls across Qatar.

Shop Qatar also has a huge prize waiting at the end—a jackpot worth QR 1 million. To enter the weekly raffle draw, shoppers need to spend at least QR 200 at any of the participating retailers. The

draws will culminate in a mega-draw on the final day of Shop Qatar where, in addition to the jackpot prize, 14 other cash prizes ranging from QR 20,000 to QR 120,000 will be announced.

Event partners and activities For the first edition of Shop Qatar, organizers partnered with popular malls across the country, including Mall of Qatar, Ezdan Mall, Hyatt Plaza, Al Khor Mall, Lagoona Mall, Gulf Mall, Landmark, Dar Al Salam Mall, The Gate Mall, and The Pearl Qatar. To support local talent and budding businesses, Shop Qatar will feature 30 pop-up shops spread across five of the participating malls, including 10 pop-up shops in the Mall of Qatar and five pop-up shops at Ezdan Mall, Landmark Mall, The Gate Mall and Lagoona Mall. Part of the event is the Doha Comedy Festival, scheduled to take place from February 2 to 4. Led by Al-Amari, the laughfest will feature a special line-up of 15 stand-up comedians from nine countries. On the weekend of January 12 to 14, visitors and residents can enjoy entertainment, delicious cuisine, and an exciting fireworks display from 4:30 PM to 10:30 PM at the Doha Corniche. The Hyatt Plaza will host the African Circus from January 8 to 21. The circus shows will be held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on weekdays and 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM on weekends. The month-long festival ends on February 7. n

QH: Was there any significance behind inviting Fahad Al Kubaisi as the guest performer on opening night? SAK: In all of our plans, we ensure tourism events are rooted in Qatari heritage, and Fahad Al Kubaisi is a popular young artist who sings exclusively in the Qatari dialect. We wanted the opening of Shop Qatar to be an authentically Qatari experience, held against the backdrop of our most modern retail and entertainment venue. This authenticity mixed with modern style is another important theme that we have worked to weave through the festival’s offering. QH: What are some things Shop Qatar is hoping to accomplish during this month? SAK: Shopping has proved to be an important part of tourism for Qatar. In 2014, shopping represented a bigger portion of tourism spending than hotel bookings or food and beverage, bringing in an estimated QR 6 billion to the economy, according to the draft Tourism Satellite Account. Looking back at other festivals we have hosted in 2016, we have seen increases in visitor arrivals during the festival months, such as March when the Qatar International Food Festival was held and August with the Qatar Summer Festival. As such, we project to see a 10 to 15 percent increase in visitor arrivals in January 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.

Mum In Doha Explores Newborn Baby Photography It’s hard seeing our babies turn into toddlers, and Carmen believes most mums can relate to that feeling. But being able to capture our children’s little features and saving them in that moment for everyone to look back on in years to come is what gives Carmen her focus.

Words and images by Lynsey Riach

The arrival of a new infant in the family is one of life’s precious moments that deserves a professional touch

A

s you read this piece, I could well be holding our newborn baby in my arms or I could still be patiently waiting for his arrival! Either way, it’s been an exciting time in our household. But along with all the planning, preparation, and purchases, something that has been very important to us is photography. Capturing special moments in life is not only incredibly important, but it can be rather hard to do if you’re not quite skilled enough. And let’s be honest, with a newborn in your home I’m sure patience isn’t something you can find in ample quantity. Roll out the professional baby photographer! It’s not a new concept but it is certainly surging in popularity. In fact, the trailblazer of the baby flower pot photos, Anne Geddes, was recently in town snapping premature babies at the Women’s Hospital.

46

So when it comes to capturing the perfect image of your perfect baby, who can we find locally? Thankfully Doha is home to these creative capturers:

Little Stars Danielle has photographed hundreds of babies from around the world in both the United Arab Emirates & Qatar. She started out by gathering her inspiration from her own children, whose photos she wanted to send to her family overseas. Her creativity comes from putting a variety of ideas together and sourcing quirky new props she can place a baby inside of to make for the most adorable of photos. Danielle particularly loves vintage items for both girls and boys and likes to use flowers around little girls. She may have her own style but loves to hear ideas from her clients to make their own portraits personal, as this is their story and their lasting memories she is capturing.

With a Little Grace Carmen named her business after her influence, her daughter. Carmen is so in love with what she does and feels it’s something phenomenal to be allowed into people’s lives to capture images of their pride and joy.

All of her newborn sessions are done at her clients’ homes, mostly because she believes that with many of her clients being expats, a lot of these babies will be traveling the world and moving on one day, so wouldn’t it be nice for them to look back on where they spent their first few days, months, and years.

Juliette Sawyer Photography With over 20 years’ experience including work in London with major national magazines and newspapers, Juliette has now transitioned from shooting catwalk models to beautiful babies. She laughs that although they can be very difficult to photograph at times, it is oh-so-worth-it when you get the shot! Her favourite style is to place newborns in baskets at her studio at The Pearl but she also enjoys photographing families outdoors at natural locations. So if you are looking to capture those magical moments with your newborn baby, toddler, or child, hopefully these talented local photographers can help! Until next time, capture memories that last a lifetime! n

DOHA COLLEGE Incorporating sports in child development Words by Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal, Doha College

Qatar celebrates National Sports Day this month, and it’s a fitting time to look into how sports develops children’s characters and instills values that will serve them throughout their lives.

N

o one disputes the crucial importance of physical fitness for everyone, and particularly for developing children. The challenge is how to weave it into a child’s lifestyle in a way that will assist their academic performance and add value and enjoyment to their journeys. Numerous studies and centuries-long experience have shown how physical education helps children hone motor skills, become team members, learn about fair play and improve self-esteem – all in a fun way. Enhanced physical and mental development of children are certainly the most important benefits of sports, but the list of values your child will acquire through sports is far longer. Resilience, perseverance, gracious acceptance of both loss and victory, and community spirit are just some qualities that, developed and nurtured through sports, will help children throughout their lives.

48

Qatar recognises this, and this month we all celebrate Qatar’s National Sports Day. At Doha College (DC), we make it a priority to provide plenty of opportunities for our students to become engaged in sports. First is our Physical Education programme, which offers lessons for all year groups and swimming from Reception year onwards. Our team of qualified teachers and our excellent facilities make this a first-class experience. Doha College is also a prominent participant in local and regional sporting competitions. We take part in and co-host fixtures for the Qatar United English Speaking Schools and Qatar Private Primary Schools Sports Association, and also compete in overseas events such as British Schools in the Middle East events or the Dubai English Speaking School Exchange, which recently reached its 33rd edition. Secondly, we offer a wide array of sports as part of our Enhanced Curriculum Activities, which list all the staple sports and more, including basketball, netball, football, rugby, volleyball, athletics, rounders, tennis, softball, swimming, paddle boarding, and water polo.

One of the most sought after groups is a very successful Triathlon Club, where children improve their times and fitness week on week by swimming, running, and cycling. Doha College extends its sporting culture to the wider community, sharing its Evo and Crossfit academies with students from across Doha. The now-traditional DC five- and ten-kilometer races bring together around a thousand runners at the beginning of each cool season; participants of all levels, from Olympians and newly-discovered prodigies to people new to running, run alongside each other reinforcing a shared love of healthy living. Not long ago, two Doha College students were chosen to participate in the 5th anniversary of “Your Health First” campaign, celebrated recently in the Qatar National Convention Centre with a VIP event attended by Sheikha Moza and over 1,500 dignitaries. Periodic inter-house challenges see the students compete in a variety of sports, culminating with the ultimate sporting events of the year, the Sports Days, where all students, teachers, parents, and even grandparents pull out all the stops to help their teams to victory while improving their personal records. Our school instils a holistic mindset when it comes to healthy living, with particular focus on healthy

eating. Beyond the food policy monitored across both campuses, and the lunchbox initiative recently introduced in Al Waab, there has been an increased drive on reducing sugar content in everyday food. Mr Douglas Briggs, Director of Extra-Curricular Activities, held presentations to children from Year 4 up, highlighting the dangers of excess sugar in our diets. Sobering and occasionally graphic, the presentations – tailored to suit each age bracket – really did bring home the message about the importance of diet. In a concerted move, our cafeterias have introduced a large range of healthy foods, from sliced fruit and vegetable sticks to a salad bar and healthy-option sandwiches. With such committed investment in sports, success follows automatically. We are proud to count amongst our community student Jakub Hrinda, who won the Qatar Open Masters in 2015; alumnus Tom Ayling, who represented Qatar at the International Rugby Sevens Tournament in February 2016; mathematics teacher Eleanor Thomson, Commonwealth water polo player and English Channel swimmer; teaching assistant Daniela Sposi, who played with the Great Britain handball team at the London 2012 Olympic Games; Vice-Principal Neil Thomas, selected to the Qatar National XVs Rugby Squad in April 2016; and alumnus Nada Arakji, who swam at the London Games in 2012 and in Rio last year and will forever hold the honour of being the first woman to represent Qatar at the Olympics n

Jeweller to the Stars

QH: It is an honor to do this interview with you, Suzanne. Passion such as yours inspires us to dream and follow our dreams. With that, we want to know how this all started. What inspired you to enter the world of jewellery design?

QH: Are you more into modern or classic types? Describe your style of designing.

SK: My family has a long history in the jewellery business. My father had his own jewellery store, and I grew up working closely with him. He taught me a lot about jewellery and design, but mostly he taught me how to run a business.

My signature Fireworks collection has been acclaimed by the jewellery industry for its design, which marries baguette diamonds with seemingly scattered settings. The collection is infused with a seesawing duality between symmetry and asymmetry, beautifully manifested in every piece.

My interest in jewellery design is really a passion. I used to only design jewellery for my family and close friends. One day I was standing in a building waiting for the elevator. While I was waiting, I was looking into the window display of a store in the lobby. The owner of the store came out and asked me where I had gotten the jewelry I was wearing, and it just so happened that I was wearing my own designs. He placed an order right then and there. That moment changed my life forever. With the support of my family, I was able to start my own company. QH: What is jewellery to you? SK: Jewellery is a form of expression for me. Designing is an art, as I create and dream up new pieces for women to wear. Jewellery is also personal. Learning about the business and jewellery design from my father, I definitely carry my family history with me when I create new jewellery pieces. To many people, jewellery is sentimental, as it is gifted and passed down to family generations. It’s very important for me to design pieces that will last a lifetime for my customers. QH: We wonder what your first creation was like, and how it eventually evolved. SK: Even though I grew up in the fine jewellery industry, I started designing fashion jewellery. Back then fashion jewellery was more fun and creative. After a few years, I returned to my roots working in 18-karat gold, diamonds, and custom-cut gemstones.

SK: My jewellery is a balance between modern and classic designs. I have always been interested in the beauty of things that are slightly imperfect. My jewellery is edgy and statement all in itself.

QH: Please explain your process of creation. SK: I start by working with the metal type. Once I have decided on the color of the metal, I then choose the stone I would like to use by touching, feeling and playing with it. When I developed the Fireworks collection, I had a couple of baguette diamonds at my desk. I started to think of all the traditional ways baguette diamonds have been used in jewellery. I then laid out the baguette diamonds on my desk, and found that scattered settings would make the diamonds more interesting. And that’s how I started the collection! I find inspiration all around me constantly. Touch and sound really influence my work, and I was able to marry all these inspirations in my latest collection. QH: If you are to create the jewellery of a lifetime, who do you envision to wear it, what is it made of, and how will it look like? SK: With each new piece I create, I push the boundaries of my imagination. I get excited when I design a new piece – I especially love to make one-of-a-kind pieces. I travel the world looking for the best gemstones to include in my One and Only collection. Beyond jewellery, I have always wanted to design an extravagant chandelier. I am hoping to do that very soon! QH: If you were to design a piece for yourself, what would it be like?

18K Baguette Diamond Cuffs. It was a memorable moment, and I felt so blessed to have my family with me that evening. QH: Your Fireworks collection has been well celebrated in the jewellery industry. How would you describe it in one sentence? SK: It’s tough to describe my collection in one sentence! My Fireworks collection features my signature use of baguette diamonds and seemingly scattered settings. QH: Your designs have garnered a number of prestigious followers, among them top Hollywood names such as Khloe Kardashian, Rihanna, Oprah and more, as well as global retailers. You have set a standard in your field. How does it feel to be a leader in the world of jewellery design? SK: I love seeing celebrities wearing my pieces. Even though I’ve been in the business for 28 years, it is always flattering when I find a celebrity wearing one of my designs. There have been a few special moments, like when Rihanna wore my Baguette Diamond Choker or when Jennifer Lopez wore my Baguette Diamond Hoops and Vitrine Pave rings. I mostly love to see everyday women wear my creations. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many of my customers around the world, and they are all special in their own way. One thing they all have in common is their appreciation for something unique. QH: We were told you will be participating in the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition 2017. Which particular collection will you be exhibiting, and why? SK: I have designed a few exclusive pieces with a Middle Eastern audience in mind. I will be showcasing beautiful statement jewellery sets including necklaces, earrings, and cuffs. I will also be showing my Evil Eye Fireworks collection. I grew up always wearing evil eye pieces, and wanted to design a collection featuring my signature style. The line includes baguette diamonds and seemingly scattered settings to showcase the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise protective eye.n

SK: I have a couple of philosophies when it comes to my designs. I would never design a piece that I wouldn’t wear myself. My daughter Patile and I test our samples around the office to see how comfortable they are. We also like to wear our new design samples to gatherings, restaurants, or special outings to see people’s reactions to the new pieces. I have always had an interest in and vision for unique and unconventional designs. Early on, I developed the “Vitrine” concept, custom cutting gemstones flat on top and bottom in order to reveal a classic diamond panel behind the gemstone. Until today, the Vitrine custom cut continues to be an important design signature and figures prominently in my Fireworks collection, with some of the most glamorous and creative pieces showing off an explosion of scattered baguette diamonds behind large topazes and amethysts.

I just designed a one-of-a-kind diamond ring with a band of asymmetrically set baguette diamonds. I’ve been wearing it lately…I can’t take it off! QH: Please share with us the most memorable award you have received.

The Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition 2017 presents “Once Upon a Time… Luxury”, a fairy tale event featuring over 500 brands of jewellery and timepieces. Dates: February 20-25, 2017

SK: Every award I receive is so humbling. My COUTURE Design Award and AGTA [American Gem Trade Association] Award have been such an honor.

“My idea was to create a modern interpretation of India and its heritage, a country with designs that are perceived in the West as colourful, golden, and shiny.” - Martin Bergström

Using only black, white, and shades of grey, Svärtan invites us to explore a side of India that goes be¬yond the vivid colours usually associated with this striking country. We were greeted by hostess Nurzat who assisted us to our table. There are five options each for starters and mains, and three choices for dessert, all carefully tended by duty supervisor Miro. turkey ham, fried egg, crispy turkey bacon, Boston lettuce, and tomatoes. Have just one and you’re ready for the rest of the day. The Steak Sandwich was an absolute delight. The quality prime sirloin is tender and made more flavorful with a simple flourish of caramelized onion and Dijon mustard. Another mains option is the Grilled Fresh Chicken Breast accompanied by rosemary potatoes, grilled tomatoes, green beans, and mushroom sauce. Finally, dessert. The Crème Fraiche Cheese Cake came with an exotic cherry coulis and raspberry sorbet that provided a counterpoint between sweet and tangy. The glorious W Chocolate Brownie was crispy outside and graced by hot chocolate sauce and a fantastic in-house vanilla ice cream. There is also a fresh Fruit Salad featuring berries, watermelon, kiwi, oranges, grapes, and pomegranates for those who want a light finale to their meal. For drinks, Wahm’s Signature Mocktails not only look amazing, the flavors are fresh and fantastic – do try the Passion Fruit Cooler! Diners can also enjoy the interesting and delectable choices from around the world on the a la carte menu while relaxing on the Wahm Lounge’s pleasant terrace. Add this place to your list of ‘must visit’ restaurants next time you’re in the mood for an enjoyable lunch experience. n

Another excellent dish was the Goat Cheese Salad, which came with frisee, kale, apple, toasted walnuts, grapes, and lemon dressing that was a burst of sunshine on our tongues. There’s also Wahm’s Caesar Salad, incorporating grilled chicken, cos lettuce, croutons, sun-dried tomatoes and tangy dressing in an innovative take on an old favorite. The Crispy Fried Calamari was absolutely fresh, delicately cooked, and accompanied by tangy chili, coriander, and lemon mayonnaise. We highly recommend the Chimichurri Beef as your appetizer. Light and savory, it’s Robata grilled prime beef flavored with cilantro and guacamole.

WAHM

First among the mains we tasted was the sumacdusted Scottish Salmon fillet. Grilled to perfection, it melts in your mouth while the flavors of asparagus and a basil emulsion complement the fish admirably. This is your choice if you want a light meal.

Qatar 2017 Football Tournament to have a European flavour

T

he 2017 Football Tournament will take place at Al Sadd Sports Club on the 14th of this month, and this year’s edition is going to have a distinctly Teutonic flavour as the event is organized by the German Industry and Commerce Office (AHK) – the body which promotes trade between Germany and Qatar. German Bakery Company who is one of the main sponsors, has arranged for an ‘inside man’ to represent them at the event, and who better than a former professional footballer? In this case, the footballer is 45-year-old Stefan Schnoor, a defender who made hundreds of appearances in a 16-year career with German top-flight sides Hamburg SV and Wolfsburg, and also two years in England at Derby County. Stefan now works as a media commentator for German television, and owns a football agency business. We spoke to Stefan ahead of the 2017 Football Tournament about his own activities, the Qatari team, and the game which he served with such distinction.

A New Experience

Words by John Hunt

This year’s inter-company football competition, organized by the German Industry and Commerce Office (AHK), welcomes the support from the four-time World Cup winner Germany, and the expertise of the former footballer Stefan Schnoor who is invited by German Bakery Company. QH spoke exclusively to the player-turned-TV pundit and football agent...

98

“I’m really looking forward to coming to Qatar,” he told us. “I’ve never been before and it will be exciting to meet new people and experience a different culture and mentality.” Stefan combines TV work with his own agency business, and while one might have thought that the two occupations might be complementary, he denies this, and even goes so far as to admit that the football agency business can live up to its sometimes shady reputation! “I did not work as an agent for a long time [after retiring as a footballer – a decision he says he did not find difficult] because it wasn’t the business I wanted to work in,” he said. “At the beginning it was quite interesting, but after a while you get to know that this is quite a dodgy business!

“It doesn’t help to be working as an agent as well as in media, because you have to criticise some players, maybe ones you represent, you have to criticise officials, coaches and managers. And after that you perhaps have to do business with them. That can be complicated.”

“It will be a Very Big Event” “For the players there’s no difference. There will be no loss of quality. Qatar will see the best players from all over the world. It will be a very big event, and everybody in Qatar and in the region must be happy.” As to the Qatar National Football Team itself, what does Stefan think the future holds? What does he think would represent a ‘good’ World Cup for them in 2022? “I think for Qatar to become a football superpower like Germany will not be possible. There are so many reasons why certain countries have got so much power in football and others not so much. But if you create your own philosophy and install the right people with a knowledge of the game then Qatar will become better and better,” he said. If Stefan were the manager of the Qatar team, what would he be doing between now and 2022 to make sure that the strongest possible Qatar side takes to the field for the opening game? “I would travel around a lot, see what is new in football, how the football is developing in the strong countries. I would try to see how the biggest managers, like Guardiola, Klopp, Wenger and so on are working. And then I would work as often as possible with the players and the young talent to improve each one individually and as a team,” opined Stefan.

The Usual Suspects 2022 is still five years away, but we asked Stefan to be brave and pick a winner. “That is a very difficult question, because nobody really knows what will happen in the next five years. But at this moment I would say it will be one of the usual suspects, like Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Italy, or England.” However, before we can consider Stefan’s tips for the 2022 World Cup, he has work to do at the 2017 Football Tournament! On the day, Stefan will deliver a welcome speech, supervise games (each of just 15 minutes duration) on one of the two pitches, deliver a training session, sign autographs, hand out prizes and close the tournament with the GCIC and the German Ambassador to Qatar. The opportunity is there for Qatari youth to learn something from a seasoned professional player in Stefan Schnoor, and doubtless they will take it. n

6 Steps SPORTS

to Help You Build a Healthy Lifestyle

Words by Ghazal Shooshtarian

Here’s how to stick to your New Year’s fitness and health resolutions year-round!

D

o you find yourself making the same New Year resolutions year after year and falling down the same old traps?

We promise to join the gym, eat healthier, quit smoking, and save money, year in and year out. With the hopes of a new year, a fresh start, a new 2017, we get so excited we want to hit the ground running! We have 365 new days to do better, eat better, live better! But come February, things change and you find yourself putting off the gym “just this weekend,” you have a cheat day “just this once,” and on and on it goes in a downward spiral.

100

Understand that you simply can't sustain weight loss by dieting – not in the long run, anyway. Yes, you can go on a five-day juice cleanse and feel like you have a flat tummy. However, a week from then you will go back to your usual eating habits and regain the weight, if not adding on a few more pounds as you’ve set yourself up for a fail by setting something that is unrealistic and ultimately tough to maintain. Why keep going through the same vicious cycle? Instead, build yourself a healthy lifestyle. These six easy steps will help you see your New Year resolutions come true, and ensure you realise long term changes that will benefit your health. 1. Attitude. You need to alter your behaviour and mind-set. Accept the fact that the route you have been taking so far has not been working, and instead start to make changes. For instance, go to bed a little earlier each night, drink more

water, substitute white rice with brown rice - it’s all in the details. Little changes can go a long way and only you have the power to change the choices you make that have long lasting effects for your future. For example, the simple mind-set of being on a diet can be punishing; rather, see that you have an enlightened nutrition plan you’re going to treat your body with this year. 2. Move. Get moving, stay active, break a sweat – work out for at least 30 minutes each day. Try to get your workout done at the same time every day and be regimented through a routine. Go before work, go after work, take a partner, just make it a routine that suits your lifestyle. This will eventually become a habit and not a chore. 3. Commitment. Know that results won't

happen instantly, so take it one day at a time. Avoid stepping on the scales before and after a workout. Avoid stepping on a scale at all! Be committed and consistent to healthy living. It doesn't matter if you're over a certain age or overweight, it's never too late to get in shape. Be kind to yourself, maintain a regular fitness and healthy eating routine, and you will feel healthy and happy. Ensure you reward your new perspective with positive messages and reflect on how far you’ve come. 4. Moderation. Take everything in moderation. Eighty percent of your diet should consist of fruits, vegetables, lean meat, and whole grains. For the remaining twenty percent, you can eat what you like. Don't feel that you have to completely deprive yourself, and then binge eat all those Galaxy bars stashed in the cupboard. Instead have a piece of chocolate at the end of a long day - you deserve it!

5. Organisation. Be organised with your time. If you find yourself skipping breakfast because you are late for work, prepare your breakfast the night before. Whether it's a peanut butter banana smoothie, overnight oats, or boiled eggs, keep it in the fridge and ready to go the next morning. After all, skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do for your metabolism. The same goes with lunch. If you find your work has piled up and you are unable to step out at lunchtime, prepack your lunch and bring it to your office. Avoid ordering takeout. Make time for the important things in your life, such as eating good whole foods, exercising, and socializing. Search Pinterest and other social media for healthy meal ideas, or speak to a local trainer. Be creative. 6. Education. Read more articles, books, and health magazines, and go to workshops and seminars. If you are on Instagram, follow fitness,

health food, and wellness accounts for tips and inspiration. A few favourites: @deliciouslyella, @balancewithb, @ evolvemindbodysoul, and @thebodycoach. They will motivate you to start building your healthy lifestyle now! One last little tip: always be willing to incorporate healthy habits into your daily routine so that you can work towards your goal in 2017 of a healthier, happier you! n

Qatar National Sports Day 2017

Selected photography by Jessie Palanca

Q

atar is the only country in the Middle East and one of a handful in the world to dedicate a day for sports.

Sports activities are common and popular in Qatar, among them walking and running, football, basketball, cricket, volleyball, powerboat racing, golf, and handball. Another sport that draws much interest is rowing with traditional Qatari Al-Shawahef boats. Some activities to participate in on National Sports Day in the capital city of Doha are: • The Dolphin Energy Doha Dash is a regular part of National Sports Day and can be registered for at dohadash.com. It begins at 7:00 AM and it can be any distance from one kilometre (0.6 miles) to ten kilometres (six miles), so it is only for those who want a good stretch of the legs. • See the sailboat race put on by the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation. It begins at the Corniche, a seaside plaza in Doha. • Also at the Corniche, you can avail yourself of kayaks, rowing machines, water skiing, shaweef rowing, weight lifting, handball, miniature golf, and more. • Stroll through Doha’s MIA Park, where you can take fitness classes and engage in some sports activities like soccer and kayaking while admiring the view and getting a breath of fresh air. Also visit the nearby Museum of Islamic Art to see some important works.

• Stop by Doha Sports City, which has some of the world’s best sports training equipment. There will be many events held there on National Sports Day, including beach soccer, basketball, judo, wall climbing, four-seat bicycle rides, fencing, and “family boot camp.” • Visit Doha’s Katara Cultural Village for karate shows, chess matches, wrestling, sailing, weight lifting, basketball games to watch, table tennis, sack races, touch-to-tackle rugby, and boxing. n

ART AND HISTORY

Words and images by Francesca Cruz

Havana, Cuba casts a spell on every traveler who ventures there. Fall in love with an island lost in time, brimming with culture and seemingly preserved in amber, as you kiss the winter blues adios.

T

he largest island in the Caribbean and hailed by Christopher Columbus as ‘the most beautiful land’ when first setting sight upon it, Cuba has become a coveted destination for travelers, and Havana its most desirous spot. Havana’s year round tropical climate; the live salsa and rumba music that saunters from almost every corner; the architecture that ranges in style from Colonial, Art Deco, Neoclassical, and Belle Epoque to mid-modern; the colorful iconic ‘50s-era cars that cruise along the Malecón, the waterfront esplanade; the jubilant faces of the locals with eyes a-twinkle with hope for a new era and more freedom; all these give the effect of the island appearing to be preserved in amber. My travels have taken me to just about every spot in the Caribbean, but there is something mystical and romantic about Cuba. Its crippling handicap—having been sequestered from the rest of the world for 58 years - is also what makes it fascinating. Traveling there is entering a time capsule and returning to the past, because not much has changed since the coup d'état of 1959. With travel restrictions lifted and the island not fully prepared for the influx of travelers, expect long waits for bags at the airport, as in close to two hours, but that might be the only downside. Once your eyes behold Havana the love affair begins, and shall remain long past your departure.

Where to Stay

The famed Hotel Nacional is the queen bee of these parts. It opened in 1930, and has welcomed illustrious guests such as Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Frank Sinatra, and Marlon Brando. Winston Churchill. It sits perched on a rise overlooking the Malecón seawall. Originally built by a Spanish merchant in 1879 and expanded in 1925, the Saratoga stands regal just across from El Capitolio (the Capitol building) and minutes from Hemingway’s favorite haunt, El Floridita. It has a stunning mezzanine with Art Deco embellishments and checkerboard floors. The Terrace Mirador, the open terrace on the top floor, houses the pool and some of the best views of the city. Another recommendation, and my option for my stay in Cuba, is Hotel Santa Isabel. Located in old Havana (La Habana Vieja), this Spanish colonial former palace turned into a swank hotel has balconies overlooking the harbour on one side, and the Plaza de Armas (the oldest square in Havana) on the other. Don’t miss enjoying breakfast in the plaza or sipping tea in the hotel’s palm-filled courtyard.

Where to Eat

A stroll down the plaza is a revelation. It’s no wonder Cuba has been referred to as the ‘Paris of the Caribbean’: every day, vendors set up stands in the square and sell everything from vintage books, movie posters, and art sketches to antique trinkets.

apartment-restaurant located on the 11th floor. This is the hidden gem for many of the locals who work in embassies. Chef Raudel Carrazana Diaz brings his culinary studies from Spain, Portugal, and Italy and combines his eclectic cuisine wisdom with homecooked Cuban fare. The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner.

What To Do

A leisurely walk is in order after delighting in Cuban fare. Head to the Malecón, where the locals gather at dusk to watch the sunset. A stroll to Plaza San Francisco, steps from the Malecón, provides a great view of the port and is just down the street from Havana’s indoor artist market, where any time is an opportune moment to pick up a handcrafted souvenir. As lunchtime approaches, it’s time to head to one of the most recommended restaurants in the city, La Guarida, considered a paladar (privately owned in-home restaurant). Don’t be dismayed as you approach a dilapidated building enveloped in memory. With its grand marble Corinthian columns, a wrought iron staircase, and crumbling walls, the overpowering sensation is that this was once an opulent place. Two flights up and you arrive at the cozy restaurant. One of the best things on the menu is the orange and honey chicken, but the complete time capsule experience is far more delicious. Another option for lunch located in the Vedado district of Havana is the paladar Atelier. With indoor and outdoor terrace seating, it’s decorated in early ‘50s shabby chic—white walls, mahogany wood, and vintage Coca-Cola ads reinforce the cozy ambiance. Things you’ll want to savor from the menu: the churrasco steak, the pimientos stuffed with tuna paste, and the molten chocolate cake for dessert. There are several other paladares in the city not to miss: San Cristobal, El Litoral, and Café Laurent. Make sure to have your hotel concierge make a reservation for you or expect long waits for seating. Also consider making reservations at Porto Habana in the Vedado district for homemade food in an

To experience the burgeoning cultural scene of the city, venture to La Fabrica del Arte Cubano (FAC), the Cuban Art Factory, housed beneath a former cooking oil plant. The FAC is a multidisciplinary performance space with art installations, theater, cinema, and fashion shows all going on at the same time. The program changes weekly. The FAC is open Thursday to Sunday. To see the best folkloric art in the city, take in the murals, sculptures, and live music at Callejón de Hamel. It’s a neighborhood covered in José Fuster’s glittering mosaics. And no traveler can truly say they’ve experienced Havana without catching a show at the Tropicana. Billed as ‘the paradise under the stars,’ this outdoor cabaret opened in 1939 and has changed little since its heyday in the ‘50s when singers like Benny More, Josephine Baker, Carmen Miranda, and Nat King Cole crooned to rapt audiences. Redesigned in 1952 by celebrated architect Max Borges, expect whirling spotlights, rumbling drums, swaying salsa and rumba, and beautiful dancers. Tickets range from CUC$75; I highly recommend the three-hour show but advise to skip the dinner there. The music, the art, the energy, the eternal sunshine, the architecture, the folklore, the gregarious locals, the new foodie scene, the history; add to these the irresistible feeling that you are privy to a bygone time, and you will, without a doubt, fall under the spell of Havana, Cuba. n

Corinthia Hotel London:

A five-star haven Words and pictures by John Hunt

Deep in the heart of a cosmopolitan city rises a stellar hotel that offers comfort, hospitality, and luxury to travellers from around the world.

T

he British winter is rightly maligned for being cold and miserable, and the capital of the UK was exhibiting these meteorological conditions when my wife and I went for a short break in London recently.

Something special Judging by the lofty standard of décor at reception and in the public areas, we expected something special in the room itself and weren’t disappointed. A wood-panelled entrance hall had a walk-in wardrobe to the left, bedroom to the right. The latter was spacious, and soberly decorated with lots of wood, leather, and fabric. The bed was enormous and firm. Opposite the bed was a wallmounted TV with about 100 channels. WiFi was free and very fast. The fully-marbled bathroom boasted twin sinks and a separate bath and rain shower. So, overall, it was a tasteful, spacious room decorated with understated elegance.

But did the bad weather prevent us from having a great time? It did not, and that was down to making the best of the great indoors – spearheaded by staying at London’s award-winning Corinthia Hotel. If the elements are unkind then having a decent base becomes paramount, and we found it at the five-star Corinthia.

The room certainly passed muster. What other delights were offered? Corinthia heavily trails its ESPA Spa, which is set over four floors in the hotel’s basement. It’s undeniably impressive, and was recently awarded ‘Best Spa in the UK’ at the Luxury Traveller awards.

Arriving early at 10.30am, it was a pleasant surprise to discover that our room was almost ready and we were able to check in. With keycards soon in hand, up we went to the 6th floor.

The size of the spa means that all manner of beauty treatments and designer makeovers are available. My wife and I only had eyes for the communal area which contained the stainless steel swimming

110

pool, glass-walled sauna, and gigantic vitality pool. Steam rooms were available in the male and female changing rooms. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience spas in luxury hotels in about 20 countries but ESPA at the Corinthia is probably the best I’ve experienced – and certainly the biggest.

We have to go out?! The combination of the hotel’s public areas, our room, and the spa were of a standard that would have made it easy to just stay put. However, we had tickets to three of London’s top attractions, so stepping out was necessary. On our first night, we attended the musical drama Phantom of the Opera, a show that is still playing 31 years after its 1986 début. The venue for ‘Phantom’ was only ten minutes’ walk from the hotel, and this is where I realise I’ve neglected to mention the Corinthia’s location: right in the heart of London, 200 metres from Trafalgar Square and 50 metres to Embankment underground station. As to the show? If you haven’t seen it, you should. Friday night tickets come in at a hefty QR 314 and, yes, it was sold out. The following morning, following a breakfast

excellent in service, taste, and presentation (healthy muesli-stuff for her, a mostly-unhealthy parmesan omelette with home-made hash browns for me), we had another trip to the spa before heading to the matinée of JB Priestly’s play An Inspector Calls – the theatre handily situated just 50 metres from the hotel. It’s a very powerful piece, and this was a worthy telling of it, with excellent performances from the cast. Tickets were QR 244.

in the British-themed Northall restaurant. The alternative, Massimo, was an Italian restaurant. We’d had a good look at both before making our choice, but Northall seemed a little less excitable. My wife had a Josper-grilled fillet steak which was exquisite (yes, she let me have some!), while I had a whole lobster with thin fries. We were both so stuffed after these courses that we shared a sweet of chocolate fondant.

Thereafter, we headed - again on foot – to nearby Whitehall. Our intended venue was not the iconic Houses of Parliament, nor Downing Street, but a more clandestine destination, the subterranean Churchill War Rooms from which Winston Churchill directed the Allied efforts in World War II from a labyrinthine, underground, bomb-proof lair.

The service had been exceptional without being intrusive, the dining room was beautiful, and the food was a real 10/10.

This was the first time either of us had seen it and we were totally spellbound. Hours were spent picking through the minutiae of Churchill’s life from cradle to grave, and while you might rightly think this was moving for a Briton, we could not help but observe the number of overseas visitors who were equally enthralled. See this – tickets QR 87.

Parting is such sweet sorrow Back to the Corinthia, then, and a last night dinner

The following morning, it was time to leave. Corinthia is gone, but never to be forgotten. n Address: Corinthia Hotel London, Whitehall Place, Charing Cross, London SW1A 2BD, UK Phone: +44 0 20 7930 8181 Email: london@corinthia.com Website: www.corinthia.com/en/hotels/london Notes: A double room with breakfast at the Corinthia Hotel London costs from QR 1,993. Spanish holiday:

SKIING IN THE HEART OF THE PYRENEES Words and Images by Luciana Cunha Franca

A travel writer and her husband learn how to ski in Spain and discover an unsung paradise for winter sports and dining

Barcelona. From there we rented a car at the airport and drove to Benasque, a three-hour trip. Using GPS, we still got lost and that was part of the fun of our impromptu adventure.

H

ola! It was after the festive season in Spain when my husband and I realized we still had four days of holiday left with no schedule in mind. Born in a tropical country, I always wanted to try skiing and thought that these four days could be the opportunity I was waiting for. When it’s winter and you’re in Europe, there are lots of places to go skiing. However, we didn’t have enough time for a long trip. Nor did we have equipment or an instructor. With all these issues, we took a good look at our options and decided on Spain as our skiing destination.

Benasque: A cozy enclave in the Pyrenees My husband is Spanish, and one of his friends recommended we visit Benasque. A town in the comarca (region) of Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, it is the main town in the Benasque Valley, located in the heart of the Pyrenees and surrounded by the highest peaks in that range. Without a hotel booking or any other living arrangements, we left Mallorca and traveled to

114

As we approached Benasque, the temperatures began going down and the landscape became more and more beautiful. The climate is of a high mountain type, with cool summers and cold winters and frequent snow. The town’s average annual temperature is 9.4 degree Celsius at 1,138 meters above sea level. Upon reaching Benasque, we looked around with awe. The town is like a village from a fairy tale, clean and lovely, nestled in a ring of mountains covered with snow. It’s a tiny place with about three principal streets.

In only five minutes after arriving at the town, we reached a hotel recommended by my husband’s friend. Hotel Ciria is homely and cozy and I fell in love with the rustic mountain architecture. The owner, Estrella, showed us the hotel facilities and gave us information for our ski adventure. Hotel Ciria has rooms for couples and apartments for families. They have a bar and restaurant open seven days a week. The food was among the best I have ever tried, and its no surprise that the hotel has received many awards for its refined menu serving traditional mountain cuisine. It was suggested that we cross the street to Deportes Aigualluts for basic equipment and to sign up for a ski instructor. The owner Alberto and the staff were absolutely helpful. They provided all the information and gear we needed to be ready for our big day! We also shopped for winter clothes as we had none, the temperatures at Benasque being considerably lower than those at Mallorca, where he had come from. To be honest, the prices were good, unlike in other ski destinations.

Cerler: A skiing resort at the peak

The next day, after a delicious breakfast at Hotel Ciria, we went to Cerler, just minutes away. As my husband drove, I took photos of the remarkable scenery. Cerler has 72 kilometers of marked pistes and is one of the highest resorts in the Pyrenees. The highest point in the area is Gallinero peak, at 2,650 meters above sea level (MASL), giving a vertical drop of 1,150 meters.

Cerler village, situated at 1,500 MASL, forms the base of the resort and comprises a traditional nucleus and a purpose-built extension that includes several hotels and apartment complexes. From there, a four-seat chair lift provides the main access to the resort. The resort itself occupies two different high mountain valleys, defining two sectors, Cerler and Ampriu. Each sector is accessible by road and has a parking area, and both sectors are linked by chair lifts. Before we reached the ski station, we stopped by a recommended store in Cerler, Grado Diez, where we got everything from socks to ski equipment, proper winter jackets, trousers, gloves, and other winter sports gear. Pedro is the owner of Grado Diez and he takes care of every single detail, and his staff is likewise friendly and helpful. We had no idea what we actually needed, but they were patient and took good care of us. I have to highlight that this shop was full and even while they were at their busiest, we felt like VIP guests. I highly recommend this store for renting or buying equipment. They have everything and of high quality.

Winter adventure: Learning how to ski

At the ski station, out first mission was to learn how to walk with ski boots. My husband laughed loud to see me walking like a silly robot as I struggled with my skis. After a long and funny walk we met

our instructor, Fran. We told him that we were first timers and he said that was no problem. As I stood on that slope, I felt that everything was fantastic – the beautiful landscape and the great family environment with pro athletes and people like us. That day, my husband and I were the only adults learning how to ski, so aside from ourselves and the instructors, the tallest person around was only 1.2 meters (four feet) high! Naturally the kids were much better than we were. They learned fast, whereas my husband and I were falling all the time and we were afraid we would land on the kids and hurt them, because we didn’t know how to brake yet! As our skills improved, we went on to more difficult challenges. There are four types of descent, coded as to level of difficulty from easiest to most difficult – green, blue, red, and black. In three days, we made it to the red hill. By then we knew how to turn and brake, and we were enjoying the exercise. Our instructor, Fran, did a good job and I’ll forever be thankful to him for teaching us how to ski. Hotel Ciria: www.hotelciria.com Tel: +34 974551612 Deportes Aigualluts: Facebook - Deportes Aigualluts/ tel : +34 974551215 Grado Diez: www.gradodiez.es / tel: +34 974552005 La Fondue Roya: www.lafondueroya.com / tel: +34 622154044

I realized now why skiing is addictive. Every time you go down, you want nothing but to catch the next lift back up again. One of the best things about Cerler is that it is so quick to ascend and descend, and it’s not as busy as France, Austria, and other ski destinations. Some days we were even alone – that was fantastic for us! Every day was a terrific experience.

The Spanish Pyrenees: A magical winter destination However, do not expect in Cerler as fine a cuisine as you will get in Bernasque, although our lunches after skiing on the Cerler slopes were always hearty and satisfying. For winter cuisine, fondue comes to mind, and at Benasque, La Fondue Roya is the place to go for Spanish and international cheeses for fondues and raclettes. Its owner, Nuria, insists on delighting diners with the best service and quality. After our magical days in Benasque, I can highly recommend it as one of the best winter destinations where you can experience culture, cuisine, and the beauty of the Pyrenean landscape. At most of the places we visited, we were greeted by the owners themselves, and that makes for a most memorable impression. As a sociable person, I made friends with these lovely people and came away with memories for a lifetime. I will definitely return to Benasque and Cerler, now that these wonderful places have a special corner in my heart. ¡Hasta luego! n

Six SensesSpa QH SENSATIONS

the ultimate tranquility and wellness venue

Words by Hairiya M. Santos and Marian Nagy

The QH team tries the spa’s Detoxifying Hammam bath and Remineralizing Facial, experiences that relax the mind, purify the skin, and rejuvenate the spirit

I

t had been a while since we indulged ourselves with an invigorating urban wellness and beauty treat. So when given a chance to try out the famous Six Senses Spa in Doha, our anticipation soared. We arrived at the hotel with some uncertainty, as we did not do any research about the spa at all, wanting to be surprised for what the experience would bring. The staff, all smiles and warmth, welcomed us in a cozy traditional Qatari interior. Each opulent detail appealed to our artistic natures; we felt right at home. The staff quickly attended to our inquiries and assigned the right therapist for the required treatment.

116

After we finished filling out the forms that were handed to us by the receptionist, we were offered fruit juices before beginning our treatments. We were guided through winding corridors decked with water features; the sound of the trickling water was very soothing. Local artwork provided random spots of color. All 23 treatment rooms resemble typical village residences. Hairiya tries the Hammam: A beauty and detox ritual My therapist Siripon (Siri) escorted me to the changing room, decorated in Middle Eastern style. The smell of the wooden furniture was

calming and the adornments were quite tasteful and enchanting. After changing into a soft, smooth bathrobe, I entered a huge traditional Moroccan-inspired hammam spa room, set up for what was obviously a wet therapy. Sure enough, I was asked to soak in the steam room for ten minutes. Then Siri returned with the bath paraphernalia. She washed my hair and applied masks to it. She lathered me with Moroccan black soap, the soothing fragrance of which reminded me of the soap my family used when I was young. After another ten minutes in the steam room, Siri rinsed me off and guided me to lie down on a huge marble bed where I was rinsed with warm water. I commend Siri for being considerate, asking me from time to time if the temperature of the water was right. I felt like a princess, being bathed from head to toe. Siri then scrubbed and massaged my whole body using a Moroccan mitt loofah. Thumbs up to Siri as she expertly rubbed me all over with just the right amount of pressure to peel off dirt and dead skin particles. It is important to note that the loofah they used was an authentic, high-quality Moroccan

loofah made up of original viscose fine thread, perfect for skin cleansing and helping stimulate blood circulation for skin to breathe normally. After that, Siri covered me with detox body scrub and lathered me again with Moroccan bar soap, and rinsed me off once more on the marble bed. For the last step, I went back to the steam room for the final wash off, had moisturizer applied all over my body, and voila! All done! I was amazed at how a bath session could take this long. But one can really be addicted to this experience. I felt every inch of my body was cleansed thoroughly. I left the spa room feeling healthy, fresh, light, glowing, and rejuvenated. That is the beauty and benefit of a hammam bath. Kudos to Siri and to Six Senses for the best purifying and detoxifying luxury treatment I have ever experienced in my life! Marian has the Facial: A custom treatment adjusted for particular needs I was lucky to have Miyona as my therapist; she is knowledgeable and well experienced in her field. She began with a consultation to examine and test my skin in order to recommend the treatment that best suits my skin type and fulfills what my face needs to look better. She recommended the Amala Remineralizing Facial, a 50-minute treatment focused on reducing pigmentation, dark spots, stress, and tiredness. Before starting Miyona made sure that I was totally comfortable, and it didn’t take much time with her to get me relaxed. She began with a cleanser that made my skin feel fresh, followed by a scrub that give pores a much-needed deep cleanse.

Six Senses Spa offers a well-layered approach to beauty and wellness that is an intuitive mix of science and human awareness. Their high-tech and high-touch approach defines a service that is crafted around the individual. It was an unforgettable experience for me and my friend, and we recommend it to everyone. From tailored treatments provided by global practitioners and expert yogic masters to functional fitness and integrated wellness and nutritional programs, everything is centered on the guest. There are many ways to achieve beauty and wellness at Six Senses Spa Doha, where they guide their guests on personalized paths to growth and reconnection. n

A face massage continued the relaxing experience, followed by the application of a face mask with spirulina and white and pink clays that draws out impurities from the skin. I felt my skin was wellcleansed and toned after the treatment.

The Dish On Qatar Wintertide Whoopee

118

Words by Carmela Yao

Before we bid winter goodbye, let’s stretch those muscles, breath fresh air, and get some outdoor fun.

W

inter, with its cool weather and bracing air, is the best season for experiencing outdoor activities comfortably. Here are some suggestions:

Overnight Camping Plan a weekend of overnight bonding with your family or friends. An evening bonfire while having BBQ on the beach is a fun experience. Slip into your sleeping bag outside your tent and do some star gazing. Wake up early and see the sunrise between the dunes. Experience the difference between a camel ride and a buggy ride. (I prefer the camel ride.) After the ride, take a dip in the Persian Gulf. A piece of advice: don’t forget to seek professional help if you are not familiar with the tricky desert. Better safe than sorry.

Shore Fishing Assistance from an old hand for buckwheat anglers is a must. Not only do you need to prepare your tackles and hooks but you also need to properly set your clutch. Chicken is the most common bait aside from clams and squid rings. Common catches are mackerel, sheri, and snapper. Watch out for jellyfish and sea snakes, there are plenty of them around make sure to avoid them. If you forgot to check the solunar calendar and it is low tide, look for some tasty clams. A fishing permit is not required for this activity but during the turtle breeding season, some beaches are off limits. Clean As You Go (CLAYGO) policy is observed at all times.

Dhow Ride A traditional wooden sailing boat used by fishermen in the past, the dhow is now also used for leisure. Head to Doha’s Corniche to hire a dhow for special events or private itineraries. You can explore the nearby Al Safliya Island, have BBQ on board, and listen to local music. The best time for a dhow ride is during sunset; be prepared to admire the sunset

manuscripts, and more. You will also see the museum’s collection of rare gold and silver coins from the 7th century.

Photowalking

Also called Khor Al-Daid, this is a very popular weekend getaway. This narrow inlet joins the Arabian Gulf which shares the southern border of Saudi Arabia. It has stunning scenery. You need an experienced off-road driver and a guide so you will not end up lost. Be careful around those friendly small sharks and porpoises.

Do you want to improve your ability in taking snaps? Gather your friends or family and bring your DSLR, digital camera, or mobile camera, and practice. You can also join some street photography groups so you can exchange ideas, techniques, and suggestions. Not only is this a good way to exercise, but it’s also a way to meet new friends while learning something that interests you.

Outdoor Sports This time of the year is perfect for outdoor sports like ice hockey, ice skating, curling, volley ball, tennis, and football. Put on your ice skates and protective gear and join the hockey players, skaters, and curlers at the Villaggio Mall and City Centre Mall skating rinks. Enroll in a tennis lesson; not only will you improve your tennis skills, you might find this is also a good way to lose weight (just keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water). There’s a mini football field exclusive for families at the Aspire Zone Foundation, which has free public facilities for everyone.

Sand Boarding and Sand Sledding No snow in Qatar? No problem! Try the rippled dunes for sand boarding. This board sport is best done in the morning because it is windier in the afternoon. Rookie should start with the smaller slopes. As you improve, try the longer slopes but make sure your balance is up to par. In case you suffer from seasickness, try sand sledding. Unlike with sand boarding, you need to know sand sledding techniques before you begin. Professional supervision is highly recommended for this sport.

Historic Walks If you have nothing better to do on a lazy weekend, take a little road trip up the northwest of the country. Visit Fort Zubara and be amazed at the fort’s wall made out of coral stones and the compressed mud that serves as the roof. There are archaeological digs on display and short films describing the history and restoration of the fort.

Coffee Break Who doesn’t love having coffee or hot chocolate al fresco on a roof top or by the sea? Discover the Souq Al Wakra. This magnificent place will make you feel like you are in ancient times. There are cozy cafés and restaurants here for almost every taste. Take an afternoon stroll at the Katara Village and when you get tired, try out some restaurants that serve authentic Arabic coffee. There are also kiosks around that serve affordable snacks. If you’ve had a busy week and want to forget all those high-rise buildings you see in Doha, head on to Souq Waqif, eat dinner, enjoy a coffee, and have some soothing shisha. If you are tired of those bustling coffee shops, rest in the calm atmosphere of MIA Park Café. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sight of the majestic Doha skyline while sipping your hot coffee.

Walk Jog Run Exercise It’s time to shed the extra pounds we gain last festive season! Walk or jog along the long waterfront promenade of Doha Corniche. There’s no need to go to the gym because there are outdoor mechanical exercise machines there. Join the morning Zumba class every Friday morning and meet new friends.

Drive a little farther north of the fort to see abandoned fishing villages. You will be in awe of the traditional building techniques of the Qataris.

Museum Hopping Visit the Doha Fort (Al Koot Fort). This fort is situated at the heart of the famous Souq Waqif. Here you will see Qatari traditional handcrafts, gold-works, paintings, photographs, and arms and weaponry. Adjacent to the Souq Waqif is the Islamic Cultural Center (ICC), popularly known as the ‘spiral mosque’. There will be volunteers to guide and assist you during your tour. Arabic courses and crash-courses on the Islamic faith are also offered here.

If you are more into green oases, drop by Aspire Park. This is so far the biggest park in the city. It has rubber-floored jogging and play areas, fountains, and a huge lake with swans.

After your visit to the ICC, walk over to one of the world’s greatest museums, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), and admire the museum’s blending of yesterday’s and tomorrow’s Islamic architectural styles. MIA features woodworks, textiles, ceramics,

Winter is the best season to have quality time in the open-air, on your own or with family and friends. So before the temperature hits 47C again, let’s make the most out of the cool weather. Enjoy the outdoors! n

Mouawad Launches ‘Hand In Hand’ Initiative

Mouawad recently launched its ‘Hand in Hand’ initiative in Qatar in collaboration with Qatar Charity, in an attempt to enhance humanitarian partnerships between the two organizations by supporting underprivileged children in Qatar through the sale of specially-made bracelets. Organised under the philanthropic mission of the Robert Mouawad Foundation, Mouawad’s global ‘Hand in Hand’ initiative sees each purchase of a custom-designed bracelet making a precious difference in a child’s life. Part of the proceeds of each bracelet are donated to Qatar Charity with the sole focus of advancing children’s education and upbringing.

At an official ribbon cutting ceremony held within the lounge itself, H.E. Mr. Al Baker welcomed notable guests including His Excellency Mr. Abdullah Al-Subaey, Chairman of the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, alongside Mr. Frank Goldanel, Director, Aéroports de Paris, before hosting a luncheon in the lounge’s luxury brasserie. Commenting on the airline’s latest Premium Lounge opening, H.E. Mr. Al Baker said: “I am delighted to be here today to officially open the Qatar Airways Premium Lounge at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, the third such lounge of its type within our growing network. “This further demonstrates our commitment to France and to showcasing the very best of our product offering, whether in the lounge itself, the modern aircraft that we fly on our triple daily service to Paris, or our further expansion with the announcement that Qatar Airways will operate direct flights to Nice from July 4 this year.”

Through this initiative, Mouawad also joins hands with the Robert Mouawad Foundation with the promise of making a lifelong difference to children in need. Featuring a simple yet contemporary design, the bracelets are crafted in 18-karat rose gold and leather and are presently available for sale at the Mouawad boutique in Lagoona Mall, Doha. Hamad International Airport Enters Elite Category Hamad International Airport (HIA) recently joined the top tier of global airports by becoming the sixth airport in the world to receive the ‘5-Star Airport’ designation from Skytrax, the London-based aviation institute and the gold standard for conveying the passenger’s voice in airport and airline rankings. This makes HIA the first ever airport in the Middle East to earn this acclaimed title. This recognition is particularly timely as it comes after a year of reaching a number of strategic milestones at HIA, including the introduction of its iBeacon enabled mobile app, the launch of the Smart Airport features in the terminal, the operation of the dual passenger train shuttle to concourses D and E, and the opening of multiple duty free stores. Moreover, HIA has continued to work closely with Qatar Museums adding multiple international and local art installations across the terminal. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “Hamad International Airport was designed and built in the modern era, taking into account what passengers want most - convenience and service. HIA more than exceeds passenger expectations by providing what passengers want in an environment that is beautiful, thoughtful, and welcoming. “HIA’s success is apparent in the fact that it is now at capacity, and the third phase of its development is highly anticipated. The airport serves more than 30 million passengers every year, and will grow to 50 million, yet each passenger can design their own experience at the airport, whether it is shopping in the world-class Qatar Duty Free premium stores, relaxing in one of its 12 lounges, resting comfortably in the Airport Hotel, or using one of the many amenities at the Vitality Spa including the squash courts and the swimming pool. The airport experience is designed to be as memorable as the journey.”
