Dish on Qatar: Here Comes the Sun

Heatstroke-proof your summer with these safety tips

FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dear Friends, As you read this, we have started our journey into the second half of the year. Ramadan has past by in all its glory, and culminated with the celebration of Eid Al Fitr in a grand close of the holy month. Summer is upon us, and with it the health issues that come as a challenge during this season. This month, QH shares methods for dealing with the heat. Dish on Qatar emphasizes staying hydrated and dressing comfortably when out in the sun, and Dawn Gibson shows us workout alternatives to consider. Travel is another activity that many are planning for this month. We reveal the wonders of some destinations with attractions for all tastes . Those who prefer glamour in their vacations and for active among us, experience surfing in a sunny paradise. Our fashion spreads showcase the latest collections, from glamourous gowns to chic children’s wear, while our hotel and spa review articles will help you decide where to go for a staycation or a wellness treatment. With so much going around us all the time, it is not easy to keep track of all positive developments. However, its important to mention some of the rather encouraging happenings on the national front that we have come across so far, under the wise leadership of HH The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Qatar Trade Surplus Surged by 42% to QR10.74bn, thanks to a robust expansion in exports and a sharp drop in imports in the month of May this year. Another encouraging news is Qatar being ranked 8th internationally in economic performance according to The World Competitiveness Yearbook 2017. Making us proud, Qatar Airways captured once again the spotlight winning the best airline in the world on Skytrax 2017. Through all these achievements we have an interesting piece this month on the Qatar Digital Library, truly an important knowledge resource and one that history buffs will appreciate. Students, teachers, and researchers will also benefit from this free online archive. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of QH, and may it serve you well as you get to enjoy life in our city, Doha. Time flies by so swiftly, and it is tempting to lose focus, yet let us always keep ourselves productively engaged in the work and activities that build and strengthen our communities and our great Nation. On behalf of the QH team, we bid you farewell until next month. .

TOM HOLLAND On humility, heroism, and “Homecoming“ Words by Piers Manning Interview and images courtesy of Viva Press

Not quite 21, Tom Holland has notched up a string of grueling jobs, from the Oscar- nominated Indian Ocean tsunami drama “The Impossible,” where he was tossed around in colossal waves, to the savage wilds of the Colombian jungle in “Lost City of Z.” But neither compare to his latest turn as Spiderman.

"

It's the hardest I've ever worked in my life, on a job," Tom Holland, star of “Spiderman: Homecoming,” explains. "And I've had some hard jobs. “The Impossible” was extraordinarily hard, but this was by far the toughest and best job of my life. “Which I know is glib for a 20-year-old to say, but does it get any better?" Young and rising star Holland was still a teenager when he landed the role of the crusading web-slinger and with the impending release of “Homecoming,” life is about to get very different for the super-friendly Londoner.

10

While his predecessor, Andrew Garfield, has long been accused of snarky, uncooperative behaviour when it comes to interviews and press engagements, spritely Holland is the complete antithesis: always bright, always charming, always exceedingly humble and grateful. This attitude, he maintains, comes from his family, friends, and sound advice from new colleagues Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. Spoiler-free synopsis “Spiderman: Homecoming” takes place several months after his adventures in “Captain America: Civil War.” Tom's Peter Parker has to readjust to humdrum life as a high-schooler with all the same relatable problems. But with a looming threat to New York in the form of Michael Keaton's The Vulture, Peter has to balance his new responsibilities as superhero with his old existence -- and it's not always a successful juggling act. The interview Holland explains why his take on Spiderman has a totally different approach to other movies and why he

decided not to seek counsel from previous stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The rising star also chats about maintaining a grip on reality, stunts and injuries, and his crippling arachnophobia. Holland lives in London. Piers Manning: The wait is nearly over. Are you getting excited? Tom Holland: Until it comes out, it won't feel real [laughs]. I've made the film, I did all the stunts, I put on the suit, but I still can't get my brain to quite tap into that. I can't believe it. And even after it comes out, I still probably will feel the same, which is stupid because I am Spiderman, I play Spiderman. Which I'm glad in ways, I don't want any of this to become normal.

PM: Wasn't that what Chris Hemsworth said to you, never allow any of this to become normal? Holland: Exactly, and what he said to me about keeping my feet planted, that has really stuck. Maybe it's because that's how I was raised; my family would be quite disappointed in me if my attitude changed, if the respect levels went down. Not allowing any of this to alter who I am, who I was before this ever happened, is so, so important to me. PM: And it doesn't have to. Look at Chris as an example, he's Thor! And probably the most approachable guy you could ever encounter. Holland: He said to keep your family and friends closest to you, like a shield. And I had my best mate Harrison with me through all this. Having him with me has been my touchstone to reality. He was on payroll as my assistant, but it was just a way to have my best mate with me through this journey, to enjoy it with him, and have that same excitement and buzz we would have had as kids going through an experience like this. Because it is hard. You're suddenly living this life of a lottery winner, private jets and hotels, and it's different, there's no denying it, but you just have to be thankful for it, always. And always excited. If it becomes boring, if you become complacent, if you believe those who are always pumping you up, I can now see how it happens. Just don't go down that road.

rubbish with girls? Who is more relatable than Peter Parker? We get to see what happens when one of his friends learns his secret and how that affects their friendship. Will he be his ally, will he keep his secret? He also get to see the aftermath of Civil War, where he hangs out with these rock stars, The Avengers and Iron Man. But now that he's being forced to give that all up and return to normality, it's a tall ask. PM: Did you talk to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield? Get any advice from them? Holland: No I didn't, because ours was a different take to theirs and it probably would have filled me with more anxiety that I was already experiencing, attempting to emulate what they did with Spiderman. I needed to focus purely on what I could bring and not compare myself to either of them. But they have been very cool with what they've said about me. I've met Andrew, who is a really kind, generous guy. We didn't really talk about Spiderman much, I mean he obviously was asking how it was going, how excited he was for me and understood what I was going through. And to get his approval was hugely important as my predecessor, I look up to him.

down the stairs with my suitcase. Yes, you can laugh. You wouldn't be the first [laughs]. PM: And you weren't finished yet? Holland: There were still a couple scenes left but they weren't big action stuff so it wasn't a disaster. Sure they were thinking, thank god this didn't happen earlier. PM: How badly were you hurt? Holland: My leg sort of popped a little, there was a little tweaking going on, it's only starting to feel okay right now. Luckily, that was it. PM: Now you're Spiderman, do you actually like spiders? Holland: I hate them [laughs]. PM: The irony. Holland: I'm not joking when I admit that and I know it's the ultimate irony, but you know, I'm also human. Most of us don't like them. But I really am scared.

I don't know, maybe I'll completely change and eat all my words [laughs]. I can't see it happening. No, it won't happen.

PM: But this didn't necessarily test your arachnophobia.

PM: Who else gave you sound advice? Holland: Robert Downey Jr. has been really great, he's been there during a lot of this. There have been moments, particularly during “Homecoming,” where I doubted my capabilities. We all have doubts. And he pulled me aside one day and said, “You know, you got this, this was meant to be. I had the same feelings doing Iron Man, the same anxieties, but now that they picked you for a reason because it feels right, it works. It's not about how good you can do the web slinging or stunts, it's about the personality you bring to the character.” That eased my fears, and wise words like that from Iron Man, you don't forget. That’s stored in the vault for repeat use [laughs]. PM: How is this Spiderman different from the other incarnations? Holland: Because we're seeing him at an unforeseen time in his life, we've never seen what he can do at 15, we've never seen him in high school before, and that combination is really dynamic. What’s it like to see a 15 year-old with super powers, an impressionable, irresponsible high school kid, who has to be home at curfew, has to do his homework, is

But then we talked about his career. He's just worked with Scorsese and got an Oscar nomination; his career to me is hugely inspiring. I hope I get to work with him in the future. With both of them. PM: Were there any injuries on set? Holland: Oddly no, none on set. We've got some amazing stunt coordinators, the best of the best, they're the ones we had on “Civil War,” they're experts, and know what exactly what you should be doing so as to not hurt yourself. It's not in anyone's interest to get injured. That's what I kept having to tell myself. But I was doing stuff that was like, “Yeah, why did I want this job in the first place? I didn't think this through.” PM: Such as? Holland: Like nosediving 30 feet. My stomach will never get used to that [laughs]. Even thinking about it now makes me a little “ughhh.” Once you do it, it's the greatest rush, and then you want to do it again, but you get up there and it's like damn, I'm scared again [laughs]. But towards the end of filming, I fell

Holland: No but on “Lost City of Z,” that was a challenge. PM: In the jungle? Holland: It was just insanely life-changing to be in that environment, to be in the thick of extreme, tropical nature like that, proper David Attenborough, and I loved it. But they have some gnarly creatures in there. I'm not too bad with snakes, or any other insects, but spiders are my thing and the ones there are the stuff of nightmares. Have you ever heard of wandering spiders? PM: No, but I'm sure they’re adorable. Holland: It doesn't make a web but it just wanders around the ground, which is almost more terrifying. It's the size of a small dog and it's the scariest thing you've ever seen. It's white on top, red below, and it stands up to show its red side and…oh my god, it's scary to witness that. One wandered near us and it looked cool but our guide said, you know, “Stay way back because if it bites you, you're gone, you're done.” But I feel like I need to get over that because spiders are enormously impressive creatures. I probably need to be a better ambassador. n

ENTERTAINMENT

Coming Soon: New rib-tickling pop-up comedy nights! The Laughter Factory is the Middle East's longest-running comedy night, proudly making the GCC laugh since 1997. Every month The Laughter Factory hosts a fresh bill of three different professional comedians, many already familiar stars of the screen on hit UK TV shows.

Ben Norris from BBC's “Mock the Week” and “Never Mind the Buzzcocks.” He is supported by Rich Wilson, described as “a very, very funny man” by the mighty Frank Skinner, and “highly entertaining” by Time Out London. A stellar line up is completed by Pierre Hollins, a brilliant comic with a razor-sharp intellect.

W

ith a reputation for quality and a sharp eye for talent, The Laughter Factory has showcased reams of A-list comics on their way to superstardom, including Michael McIntyre, Russell Peters, Ed Byrne, Dara O'Brien, Ross Noble, Jason Manford, Sarah Millican, Kevin Bridges, and Frankie Boyle.

The pop-up shows start at DoubleTree by Hilton Doha – Old Town, on Monday, July 10, at 8 p.m. Next is Grand Hyatt where they will be hosting an early show at on Tuesday, July 11. Then they rotate venues around the city to bring live comedy to a whole new audience.

The Laughter Factory has been recognised by numerous publications, winning several accolades. It is celebrating its 22nd year of bringing the best global stand-up comedy to the Middle East, now in all new pop-up form.

Laughter Factory owner Gail Clough can't wait to bring their unique comedy nights to a fresh new audience. "After all,” says Clough, “that’s what a live experience is about -- having some decent banter in the pub before the gig and trying to recall a few of the gags afterwards. We just provide the highly entertaining bit in the middle.

In the house! "The Laughter Factory Pop-Up Tour" is headlined by

“The Laughter Factory is not just about the worldclass acts on stage; we are proud to say we have a

12

wonderful comedy-literate audience that have grown with us over 21 years and now it's time more people got the Laughter Factory feeling." MEET THE COMICS Ben Norris Ben Norris might be the most acclaimed stand-up comedian you’ve (probably) never heard of. Don’t believe us? Critics and comedians alike are united in their universal praise for this bonafide legend of the UK comedy scene. A-list fans include Ed Byrne, Jason Manford (who called Ben “unbelievably brilliant”) and Daniel Kitson (who branded Norris “a wonderful disgrace of a human being”). Meanwhile, select adoring press quotes include

"One of the comedy circuit’s best improvisers" (Daily Mirror), “Splendidly funny” (Time Out London), “One of the most bankable headliners around” (The Guardian), and “It's hard to think of anyone on the circuit who works an audience with as much skill and flair" (The Scotsman). Really. Meanwhile if you have heard of Norris – respect – it’s likely you spotted his primetime appearances on top BBC panel shows “Mock the Week,” “Never Mind the Buzzcocks,” and “They Think It’s All Over.” Ben received rave reviews on his last Laughter Factory outing – “viciously striking the funny-bone,” raved The National – and we’re thrilled to have been able to bag this much in-demand comic for a return visit. As a stand-up, Ben is of the classically observational, effortlessly relatable bent. He’s known for a relaxed, chatty personality; the lines between fact and fiction, routine and improv, are utterly blurred in Norris’ fresh, friendly delivery. (Interesting fact: Ben is also cousin of A-list actor Martin Freeman of “The Hobbit,” “Sherlock,” and “The Office” fame.) After close to 25 years on the circuit, with three hit Edinburgh Fringe solo shows to his name, Ben is rightly regarded as stand-up veteran. Or, as the thinking folk at GQ put it so well: “The term ‘circuit legend’ is overused, but Norris is one of a handful that have been headlining for more than two decades and rarely departs a stage without leaving it torn to shreds in his wake. A master of the craft... the most polished stand-up you are likely to see.” So there. Ben's TV credits include: “Mock the Week” (BBC 1), “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” (BBC 2), “The Comedy Store” (Paramount and Comedy Central), and “They Think It’s All Over” (BBC 2).

Ben has written and performed three solo shows at The Edinburgh Festival: “Sitting Room Only” (1997), “Mr. Ambiguousness” (2013), and “Benny on the Loose” (2014). Ben was Ed Byrne’s tour support for his 2013 UK tour and appeared at the Apollo, Hammersmith. Ben acted in a play developed with the Comedians Theatre Company called “The Last Minutes” which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2014. Pierre Hollins Pierre Hollins has made his mark as a comedic breath of fresh air, strafing brows high and low, challenging and cheering audiences in equal measure. But as well as having an intellectual streak, Pierre is deeply down-to-earth, serving withering everyday observational insights and psychologically scoping into matters of men, women, and the heart. Some call Hollins a musical comedian, but such a description doesn’t tell the whole story. For one, he eschews the commonplace cheap laughs of strumming parodies of popular songs. He claims he can’t play, but likewise can’t fight; in the words of his own press blurb, he has a wild “compulsion for absurd guitar posturing.” Which is why the first instrument he brought to the stage was a one-string electric squash racquet (which still makes special appearances at festival gigs). Oh, and Hollins is also master of the accents-forfunny. From Polish builders to Indian sari salesmen, Pierre strafes the precipice of good taste, always remaining on terra firma thanks to his fine wit and faultless execution. According to Shanghai City Weekend, he should be "made the mayor of a small village." Hollins has written for radio and television. Rich Wilson It was when working behind the bar at a London comedy club that Rich Wilson realised that, funny as they were, he could do better than the comedians onstage – and promptly picked up a mic. Call it a stroke of fortune for the comedy world – what if Rich had been behind the bar at a jazz club? Would he be strutting a double bass and pork-pie hat today? – because for more than a dozen years Wilson has been working crowds across the world with his assured sense of style, timing, and an ability to tame the rowdiest of comedy crowds. Praised as “a very, very funny man” by the mighty Frank Skinner, and dubbed “highly entertaining” by Time Out London, Wilson has proved a global hit, winning Best

International Act at the New Zealand Comedy Festival Awards and scoring high-profile gigs in New York and Las Vegas.n The Laughter Factory starring Ben Norris, Rich Wilson, and Pierre Hollins Dates and times: Monday, July 10: DoubleTree by Hilton Doha – Old Town, 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 11: Grand Hyatt Doha, 8 p.m. Tickets: QAR 140. QATARI HISTORY AND HERITAGE ONLINE Words by Jenny Ortuoste, PhD

The Qatar Digital Library is a trove of documents, images, and other artifacts uploaded to the Internet, allowing free access to information about the history, heritage, and culture of Qatar and the Gulf states. Dr. Jenny Ortuoste explores some of its treasures.

T

The QDL’s purpose, according to its website, “is to make a world-class resource freely available for everyone, from those with a general interest in the history of the Gulf to the academic researchers undertaking groundbreaking research. “The QDL will transform the study of Gulf history, improving understanding of the Islamic world, Arabic cultural heritage, and the modern history of the Gulf.” Documents from the 16th century Among the QDL’s treasures is the archive of the India Office Records from the 1750s to 1951, reflecting the time that Great Britain established a colonial presence in the area, though Qatar was not part of the British Empire.

he Qatar Digital Library (QDL) is an ambitious project of the Qatar Foundation (QF) to digitise documents, photographs, and other materials related to Qatar and other areas in the Gulf.

During that period, British agents, traders, regional authorities, and other personalities travelled parts of the Gulf areas; and, as civil servants do everywhere, created masses of documentation on their administration and other activities.

Working with the Qatar National Library in partnership with the British Library (BL), the uploading of content from BL’s collections began in 2012.

These included reports, diplomatic papers, financial receipts, correspondence, diaries, telegrams, and maps related to not only to Qatar but adjacent regions including Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

As of the end of 2016, there are are about 950,000 previously undigitised images, manuscripts, sound recordings, and other materials accessible at the QDL’s online portal (www.qdl.qa).

20

As of late 2015, the most-accessed India Office Records document was a folio of 606 images related to “Abd al-‘Aziz bin ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Faysal Al

Capt. William Henry Irvine Shakespear

Sa‘ud (Ibn Sa‘ud)… [and his] …relations with Britain, Turkey and local rulers, including Shaikh ‘Isá bin ‘Ali Al Khalifah of Bahrain, and Shaikh ‘Abdullah bin Jasim Al Thani of Qatar,” dating from the early 20th century. ( Image No. 6) Also widely read were documents relating to the death of one Capt. William Henry Irvine Shakespear, one of the youngest political agents to serve in the Gulf. He was very close to Ibn Sa‘ud, riding with his army in the 1915 Battle of Jarrab, where Shakespear lost his life. ( Image No. 5) Manuscripts of Islamic scholars The QDL has an enviable collection of around 25,000 images related to works by medieval Islamic and Arabic-speaking scientists and scholars. These files showcase works on topics such as mathematics, astronomy, and medicine.

Image No. 1

Image No. 4

Some of the texts were translated from classical Greek, Persian and Sanskrit, in an effort to preserve and disseminate knowledge from other countries. One such manuscript, the Kitab fi ta‘lim, was one of the most important astronomical texts from the ancient world. It is a translation from the Greek of books Seven to Thirteen of the “Almagest” of Ptolemy (c. 90-168 CE). ( Image No. 3) Another work often accessed on QDL, Kitab Arshimidas fi 'amal al-binkamat (Book of Archimedes on the Construction of Water-Clocks), is a 9thcentury compilation of short works by writers in Greek, Persian, and Arabic on how to create clepsydrai, the most accurate timekeepers until the pendulum clock in the mid-1600s. ( Image No. 4) This text likely influenced Isma 'il ibn al-Razzaz Al-Jazari, who authored Kitab fi mairifat al-hiyal al-handasiyah (Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices), published in 1206. The book carries a lovely illustration of his famous Elephant

Image No. 2

Image No. 5 Clock, a monumental contraption devised to be carried on the back of an elephant and operated by two men, not counting the elephant’s mahout. ( Image No. 1) Also on QDL is the commentary by Ibn Al Nafis on Ibn Sina’s (Avicenna) al-Qanun fi al-tibb (Canon of Medicine). Writing in the 1200s, Al Nafis was the first physician to describe how deoxygenated blood flows from the heart to the lungs. This particular manuscript is a 1497 copy written in the naskh script in black and red ink, with a portion illuminated in gold, green, red, blue, and black. It should be of interest to admirers and practitioners of Arabic calligraphy. ( Image No. 2) QDL resources benefit the world Another valuable resource on the QDL are articles written by subject matter experts who provide background, context, and interpretation on various topics.

Image No. 3

Image No. 6 Among the titles one can read are related to pearldiving and the indigo trade, industries from early history of Qatar; the beginnings of science in the Islamic world; music, poetry, military history, and more. The establishment of the Qatar Digital Library cost around $14 million, and this amount could rise, given that digitization of materials will continue until 2018. It is difficult to imagine a project of this magnitude being undertaken by another country or entity. That Qatar has undertaken it and shares its fruits speaks to its public-spirited contribution to the preservation of historical and cultural knowledge, leading to the world’s greater understanding and appreciation of the region.n Website: www.qdl.qa Twitter: @BLQatar (British Library Qatar Partnership), @QNLib (Qatar National Library)

MUM in DOHA:

Travelling with a baby

Words by Lynsey Riach

activities and screen time, albeit not too much of course.

Qatar, as wonderful as it is, sure heats up over summer. So when you feel it’s time to pack up and leave for a while, that can itself come with a few headaches when children are involved.

No matter when you decided to travel, it is always beneficial for the whole family to stroll the cabin. This keeps a young baby entertained with all the sights and sounds (not to forget the cooing of other passengers), a toddler will get tired out with all that walking up and down, and a slightly older child will get a suitable break from their seat. Oh, and you get to stretch your legs too.

I

f you are reading this piece, you must have been brave enough to stay here that little bit longer to wait out the heat, or you are about to join the thousands of other mums who will leave on a mass exodus with babes in our arms! First up – when to travel. Do you fly overnight or by day? For me, personally, this depends greatly on the age of the child. Whilst a newborn baby can wake every few hours, it really wouldn’t matter if you flew day or night. A toddler, however, will be so tired they should sleep entirely during a night flight, but the problem of course is if they are under the age of two, they are sleeping on you. Nothing like a dead arm after eight hours! Those with children over the age of three are perhaps a little luckier, if I can say that, as these kids can entertain themselves somewhat with some

Hunger is always an issue when travelling. Let’s be honest, those aeroplane meals aren’t always what you long for at 30,000 feet. It’s best to do what we mums do best – prepare! Lots of different colourful and healthy snacks will keep toddlers and children happy. Convenient fruit and meal pouches are handy for a weaning baby.

On board there should be enough to keep your little one entertained with lots of new faces, magazines, curtains, window shades, and even paper cups. My two boys under two have never really been entertained by the toys I have brought for them and there is always the fear of losing a good toy during your travels. So wherever you jet off to this summer, be it home or a holiday, pack, prepare, but most importantly, make memories with your family that you will never forget! Until next time – hug your babies tight and smile at the miracle that is life! (END) n

As for that issue of heating milk, a very handy contraption by Avent allows you to divvy up your formula powder into feeds so you simply twist the bowl and it will dispense into the bottle. Ask a flight attendant to add boiling water and wait awhile until it is the correct temperature for baby. Again, preparation is key! How about the toy count? I go for as little as possible, as frightening as that may sound, but you really want to carry only as much as you need to on board. There’s enough to pile onto us without a baby to add! I like to use a foldable stroller that can be left at the gate and collected upon arrival at your destination.

TRANSITION:

THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGE

Words by Nicola Meikle, Assistant Principal – Transition, Doha College Photos by Cristina Ionascu

Doha College has been educating children and young people in Qatar since 1980. This month’s topic: how the school provides students with opportunities that make the inevitability of change easier for students to deal with.

Nicola Meikle,

Assistant Principal – Transition, Doha

S

ad. Happy. Excited. Nervous. These are just some of the emotions that many students (and parents) will be going though at this time of year. It is about this time that we begin to look ahead at the year to come and start to consider the transitions that we are about to go through.

For students, transition happens with regularity throughout their educational journey. Each time this happens, whether you are a pre-school student or a young adult about to embark on higher education, the start and end point may differ but the process through which they all go is the same.

Whether this is moving to a new year group, class, or campus within your existing school, or further afield to a new school or even a new country, each student will have already started the transition cycle.

For example, the first day starting primary school is one that is often etched into the memories of mums and dads across the world. For many it is the first time their child has been without them for any length of time.

At Doha College, our “Stay and Play” sessions are designed to help that initial transition into preschool. Parents come with their children and spend time in the pre-school hubs, meeting teachers and teaching assistants and playing with their children. The children also meet their very own cuddly “Dash the Dolphin” who will be waiting for them to play with when they return to school in September. The huge importance of feeing a sense of belonging and familiarity with new environments, people, and places is one that we must never underestimate. At Doha College, as our children take the big step from primary into secondary school, one of the things we strive to achieve is a sense of the familiar. The students visit the secondary site on several occasions, each time meeting key members of staff and student mentors.

with their friends and peers who may or may not being going on the same journey as they are in the future. Many of you will have begun this transition process at home as well and this is when having the opportunities to say goodbyes, reminisce on past histories, create parting gifts for friends, maybe even apologise for past hurts, and leave with good memories, all help with making that new start one that begins well. So wherever your transition journey takes you, embrace the change, enjoy the challenge, and remember, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end” (Robin Sharma). n

Every year we have a “Move-Up Day” which provides an opportunity for students from pre-School all the way through to Key Stage 3 to spend time meeting their new teachers, acclimatising to the new environment they will begin in September, and taking part in memorable activities that will support their feeling of belonging when they make the move to their new class. However, transition is not just about moving forward but also about looking back. David Pollock, co-author of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, said “You need to leave well to enter well.” At Doha College, this is supported in a multitude of ways, from leavers’ productions, award ceremonies, and certificates that recognise excellence and achievements, to an array of social events that allow the student to dress up, laugh, cry, and enjoy time

TURMERIC THE QUEEN OF ALL SPICES

free radicals in the body that damage cells. Many patients prefer using this natural remedy since it does not pose unpleasant side effects like many prescribed medications. Retains beta-carotene in foods The use of turmeric can help retain beta-carotene in certain foods. Beta-carotene, the orange pigment found in fruits and vegetables, is converted into Vitamin A, which gives us a healthy skin and immune system and promotes good eye health. Nutrients are retained when vegetables like carrots and pumpkins are cooked with turmeric. To get the full effects of this spice, add a pinch of black pepper. Black pepper contains piperine which has been proven to increase the absorption of turmeric into the body. HOW TO USE IT In cooking You can add this spice to anything you cook - meats, vegetables, eggs, soups, and even to boiling water when making pasta or rice! One of the easiest ways to use and store turmeric is as a creamy paste. Make your own by mixing turmeric, black pepper, coconut oil, and water. Blend the paste into your morning smoothie, a glass of warm milk, a bowl of soup, or rice.

Turmeric contains a wide range of antiviral and antibacterial properties making it a natural antiseptic agent. It can be used as an effective disinfectant to help speed up the healing process.

The challenge This month, Doha Marriott General Manager John S. Louie accepts the QH Chef for a Day Challenge under the close eye of Acting Executive Chef Erhan Afacan. Let’s find out a bit more about them. John S. Louie brings with him a wealth of experience including a previous tenure at the Doha Marriott from 1999 to 2011 in the role of Director of Food & Beverage, before being promoted to Director of Operations in 2007. He brings an international flair to the hotel, having held positions in various locations around the world including Egypt, Greece, and Puerto Rico. One of his achievements was catering at the mountain venues of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, where he prepared a daily VIP buffet for sportsmen and journalists. Some of the important people he cooked for in Sochi are Russian President Vladimir Putin and American actor Steven Seagal. Erhan has won the “Best opening of the best signature restaurant” award, appearing in Timeout magazine. A chef of his stature is sure to serve nothing but the best. Now the challenge is on! All eyes are on GM John S. Louie, who is confident that he can whip up an excellent three-course menu. Between jokes and bets, Chef Erhan keeps trying to find something wrong with GM’s elaboration. We are all excited to try GM’s menu. I have to confess that he looks very professional and he really knows what he is doing. It seems like the work environment at Doha Marriott is fantastic. GM, Chef, and the staff are all having a great time participating in our challenge. It is heartwarming to see their interaction. CARISMA ITALIAN RESTAURANT:

AUTHENTIC CULINARY DELIGHTS AT WARWICK DOHA Words by Luciana Cunha Franca Images by Jessie Palanca

Expertly prepared and beautifully presented Italian dishes are the centrepiece of Warwick Doha Hotel dining. Guests can expect a journey of gastronomic experiences where old favourites and new twists are sure to please even the most discerning palates. The QH team heads over to experience the many tastes of Italy.

W

arwick Doha Hotel is a five-star gem set in the City of Pearls and Lights. Located in Doha’s city centre, it puts its guests in the middle of everything the city has to offer. But it’s not only about the location, it is also where you can find a new standard of luxury, starting with the rejuvenating spa and rooftop swimming pool. With a blend of contemporary and classic styling, an array of 164 elegant rooms and suites, and refined dining, Warwick Doha is designed to create the most memorable Qatar stay imaginable. So we knew we could expect no less than a wonderful dinner at Carisma Italian Restaurant. Upon arriving, my two dining companions and I were warmly greeted by Warwick Marketing, Communication, and Sales Executive Lama Mabrouk, who assisted us to our table. I was amazed by Carisma’s décor. If you have been in Italy and walked though their beautiful streets full of restaurants, you will know what I mean when you visit Carisma - the atmosphere is as romantic and sophisticated as anything in Italy. The menu offers many options that all sounded delicious, so it took us a while to choose. We decided to start with Zuppa Funghi con Porcini and Mozzarella di Bufala salad. The tomato-based soup had a velvety mouth feel and you can tell that it is made with fresh porcini mushrooms. I loved the

48

simplicity of the salad which led us to appreciate the flavours and tang of tomato, buffalo mozzarella cheese, and a deft touch of pesto sauce. Absolutely delicious! We chose three main courses. One was Ravioli burro nocciola, a classic from Italy which combines homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli with a simple buttery sauce cooked to perfection. My choice was the Tonnarelli al bacon e tartufo, eggless pasta with bacon and truffles. The outstanding flavour of truffles smartly combined with bacon in a creamy sauce melts in the mouth. It was my first time to try this dish and I absolutely loved it.

Chef Challenge

SCRUMPTIOUS SQUID FOR SUMMER Photography by Jessie Palanca Feature coordinated by Hairiya Santos Star Ingredient: Squid Location: DoubleTree by Hilton Doha – Old Town Food prepared by: Executive Sous Chef Binit Kumar Pandey

As part of the QH advocacy for a healthy lifestyle, we ask different chefs each month to develop a nutritious meal that can also satisfy the pickiest of palates. This month, we feature that delectable seafood, the squid.

Squid and Mango Carpaccio with Truffle Ponzu INGREDIENTS: • 4 pcs. squid • 1 Alphonso mango, peeled • 3 tbsp. truffle oil • 3 tbsp. ponzu vinegar • 2 pcs. Thai chili • 1 tsp. chopped garlic, fried • 1 tsp. ginger, chopped • 1 tsp. scallions, chopped • Seasoning PREPARATION: Thinly slice squid and mango. Add rest of the ingredients in a bowl and make dressing. Arrange the sliced mango and squid in a plate. Spoon the dressing over the carpaccio just before serving.

It’s summer time, and a sure hit this season would be squid, whether grilled, fried, sautéed, served as an appetiser or main course. Aside from being delicious, it’s a great source of vitamin B12, which can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks and help stabilize blood sugar levels.

“Cooking is all about people. Food is one of the very few universal things that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat. Cooking is about imbibing different cultures and putting them on a plate. When I cook or plan a menu, I don’t stick to rules. I rely on my imagination.”

Executive Sous Chef Binit Kumar Pandey

Sous Vide Baby Squid with Black Risotto INGREDIENTS: • 4 pcs. baby squid, cleaned • 4 tbsp. Turkish pastrami, diced • 1 cup risotto rice • 1 large shallot, chopped • 1 clove garlic, chopped • 1 tsp. of squid ink sachet • 2 cups fish stock • 3 tbsp. mascarpone cheese • 5 tbsp. butter • Olive oil • Seasoning PREPARATION:

Stuff the squid with pastrami and seal the end with a toothpick. Place the stuffed squid in a food-grade bag and vacuum-pack it. Cook in a hot water bath for 30 minutes. The temperature of water should be 60®C. In a pan, sauté shallots, garlic, and rice till translucent. Add fish stock a little at a time. Finish with butter, mascarpone, and squid ink. Take the sous vide squid and pan-sear it till golden brown. Assemble on a plate with risotto at the bottom and squid on top.

Squid Ink Cookie Crumble Cheese Cake INGREDIENTS FOR COOKIE: • 12 oz. all-purpose flour • 2 tsp. baking powder • 1 ½ tbsp. curry powder • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar • 1 tbsp. salt • 1 cup whole milk • 1/8 cup squid ink FOR CHEESE CAKE: • 1tbsp. butter • 1 cup full-fat cream cheese • 3 tbsp. caster sugar • 1/5 cup sour cream • 1 tbsp. plain flour • 1

free-range egg plus 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten • ¼ tsp. vanilla extract PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350oF degrees. In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, curry, sugar, and salt. Mix in milk and squid ink and blend until dough is formed. On floured work surface, place dough and roll out to ¼ inch thickness and cut dough into circles. Transfer circles to a Silpat-lined sheet tray and bake until crisp, about 10 minutes. Place the biscuits in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin to fine crumbs. Melt the butter and add the biscuit crumbs, stir to combine. Place in the base of the cake tin and spread in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes until golden. Remove and leave to cool while you prepare the filling. Reduce the oven to 315F. In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese and sugar until smooth then add sour cream and flour and beat again. Gradually add eggs and vanilla essence, beating well. Pour the cream cheese mixture onto the biscuit base then bake for 45 minutes. Once the cheesecake is cooked, turn off the oven and remove cake once completely cooled.

LIVE FOR THE

CHALLENGE

I

f you walk or run at the same speed, at the same incline, every single day, you can't expect to see a difference in your body.

The key to improvement is to step it up. Dream big. Set yourself challenging goals. Only then will you leave your comfort zone and reach further than what you are used to. To put this into practice, make a list of five challenging goals that you would like to achieve by the end of 2017. List things you have never done before, try things that are unusual to you, and inevitably teach your brain and body something new.

• Stimulate personal growth Setting challenging goals not only helps you enhance your skills and knowledge, it will also help you grow as a person. You will never be able to reach your full potential and unlock the door to your personal excellence, if you do not challenge yourself to see just what exactly you are capable of. Your body and mind are capable of so many incredible things. If you overcome fear and selfdoubt, then you will discover the extent of your capability and strength. • Be happier There is no greater feeling than accomplishment. Passing your driver's test, putting your two-yearold to sleep, completing that work proposal on time, running your first 5K race – these are all victories. Taking pride in your efforts will lift your mood. You will learn to be happier with yourself no matter how big or small your victories are.

Words by Ghazal Shooshtarian

Real progress happens when you step outside of your comfort zone. This could be in your work life, social life, or fitness routine. Challenge yourself, step up, and find yourself improving in mind, spirit, and body.

• Deal better with life The more you train yourself to have the willpower to push through every situation, whether good or bad, the more resourceful you will be when faced with the curve balls life will throw at you. Let's face it, we've all had those curve balls. Setting goals, giving yourself the time, and acting on them will only mean it's upwards and onwards.

• Gain self-confidence The more you challenge yourself, the more opportunities you have to succeed. And the more you succeed, the more confidence you will have in yourself and your abilities. Imagine writing down your goal, reaching it, and with your pen crossing it off - your self esteem will be at an all-time high. As a result, when the next challenge comes along, you will be eager to face it head on. By having greater confidence in yourself, you will also have higher standards in terms of what to expect from yourself and those around you. Others will notice this and, in admiration, show you more respect.

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

Note that it is completely okay if you do not fulfil all of these challenging goals. The fact is, by setting these goals, you are challenging yourself to do more: setting the bar higher and seeing many benefits as a result. You will also reveal personal qualities you did not even know existed. How do I set a personal challenge? Here’s an example: For this summer, I set myself a challenging goal to trek 67 kilometres to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. I will be hiking between 4 to 12 hours a day for a week. With no access to running water, showers, and even mobile phones, I will most definitely be stepping, even leaping, outside of my comfort zone, connecting with nature and disconnecting from my routine world. I am hoping that the lessons which I will learn from this experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. n

- T.S. Elliot How will I benefit from this? • Shake up your usual routine Do you ever feel like you are stuck doing the same thing day after day? Eating the same food, seeing the same people, driving the same route, going to the same places? Sometimes it's necessary for us to change our habits and experience new situations. Life can be far more exciting if you constantly challenge yourself in new and interesting ways. Set goals and break out of your daily routine. You'll start to live a full and joyous life.

• Maximise performance By setting yourself challenges you will be more active both mentally and physically. Your attention and thoughts will be on achieving your goal instead of on trivial things. Try to always have something going that tests you and makes you wonder if you are actually going to be able to push through and achieve it. This could be a project at work, learning a new skill, or running that extra mile on the treadmill.

Surfing in the

SEYCHELLES Words and Images by Luciana Cunha Franca

The QH Team goes on an adventure for the best surfing on paradisaical beaches.

W

e all enjoy going for holidays and relaxing by the beach. One destination you must consider is the The Republic of Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The 115-island country, whose capital is Victoria, lies 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) east of mainland East Africa. With a population of about 92,000, it has the smallest population of any sovereign African country. The Seychelles are internationally acknowledged for their beautiful beaches with clear sands and crystal clean waters. It is a real paradise where one can enjoy culture, cuisine, and gorgeous landscapes. I love to relax on my holidays but I have to confess that I also need to try the activities and explore the place. After enjoying a lazy day at our chosen resort, I was absolutely ready to try some of Seychelles attractions. We found out that we could go surfing. They offer classes for beginners and rent boards to experienced surfers as well as guide you to the best surfing spots.

64

Federico, the surfing instructor, passed by for us at our hotel and took us to a fantastic beach where we would stay for the next few hours. All the necessary equipment was provided and was carefully selected according our height, weight, and level of surfing ability. We were advised to bring drinking water and whatever else we needed, as this place does not have the common

beach bars and restaurants. The great thing was that basically the beach was ours. Federico was absolutely professional and gave us tips and help to get the best waves. When you get tired, you can just relax by the sea (that was me). I figured, I’m on holiday and I can do whatever I want. So between sea and land I was having a blast. The swells were getting better as time went by and things were getting more fun. Federico said they will soon open a guest house by the beach where visitors can enjoy surf camp holidays. Even while staying in other hotels you can just book Federico for surfing lessons and request the days and hours that you want. In case of bad weather, classes are cancelled for everyone’s safety. After an awesome morning Federico took us back to our hotel. We had a quick shower and went

out to try some of the local cuisine. We stopped by Havana at Eden Island and I’m not sure if we were starving or their food was just fantastic. We choose the Royal Seafood Parrillada and I can’t describe how fresh and absolutely tasty this was. We made friends with the staff at Havana, in particular Benedeth and Vincent. They were so friendly and professional that next day we were ready for more parrillada! We also went for a half-day boat trip with the Ocean Girl Company and they took us to a beautiful beach for snorkeling and barbeque. The boat was all ours, and we enjoyed the sail with the crewmembers, Christian and Paul. Those guys were absolutely fun. This country is fantastic and I just can’t get enough of it! You can surf, dive, snorkel, do wakeboarding, go on boat trips, enjoy fantastic dining options, meet friendly people, and party hard on Friday nights! This is the kind of place that you can visit many times but you’ll never get enough. Thanks to everyone who made our holidays perfect! We will definitely be back soon. n

KEEPING

Summer-Fit

in DOHA On the waterfront When it’s too hot to run outside, it makes sense to hit the water. And what better place to do so than in Doha, where you are surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Arabian Peninsula, as well as numerous world-class swimming pools?

Words by Dawn Gibson

Dawn Gibson explores some cool alternatives to boring old gym routines.

A

dmit it, you’re probably reading this while lying next to the pool. Or, at the very least, you are relaxing inside with the airconditioning on full blast. By the time July rolls around in Qatar, all except the most dedicated gym bunnies are finding it hard to stick to a workout schedule which involves getting even hotter and sweatier. However, if you don’t want to pile on the pounds from all those summer ice-creams, what to do? Keeping fit during our intense summers does not have to be a chore, but it does involve a change in mind-set. Consider switching your routine and trying something new to keep yourself motivated and out of the midday sun. Want to try a new indoor class or activity, but never seem to get around to it? Now is the time. Explore the options, keep hydrated, and carry on – you will be glad you did.

66

For a challenging all-body workout, we recommend trying the increasingly popular sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) – it uses almost every muscle in the body, is low impact, and is a fun social activity. For classes, check out

option for people first starting a workout routine or recovering from injury, these days there are a wide diversity of classes to suit all fitness levels. Try Aspire Academy for whole-body water workouts, aqua tabata, aqua bootcamp, conditioning, and more (www.aspire.qa), or StrongBox in West Bay for a high intensity interval training (HIIT) pool session (www. strongboxqatar.com/classes). Some of Qatar’s hotels offer aqua classes – schedules change often so it’s best to check with hotels individually.

Also watch out for outdoor full moon yoga sessions at various hotels – the ones held by Six Senses Spa at Ritz Carlton’s Sharq Village & Spa are magical (www.sixsenses.com/spas/doha/ welcome).

Mall walking When the going gets tough, the tough go to the mall. At least, they do in Qatar. It is becoming increasingly common every summer for people who regularly walk, cycle, or run outside to take their workout into the air-conditioned comfort of one of Doha’s super malls.

Shake it off Follow Taylor Swift’s lead and dance your worries away – or at least release a bit of energy while learning some new moves in a nice, temperaturecontrolled dance studio.

Okay, you can’t exactly run at top speed, but you can challenge yourself to a reasonably long, fast-paced walk (Doha Festival City, for example, has almost 4 km of corridors as well as its 3 km outdoor leisure trail). Challenge yourself to a mall circuit, trying a different venue for each workout over one or two weeks. Team up with a friend to keep yourself motivated. Get your om on Most people with an interest in wellbeing are aware of the multiple health benefits of yoga, from all-around improved fitness and flexibility, stress relief, better posture, better sleeping patterns, and increased energy. surf&soul, run by Intercontinental Doha Hotel (www.surfandsoul.info). Another cool option is pool-based cardio classes, which have come a long way in the past ten years. While water aerobics used to be a gentler

If this sounds like you, get the balance back into your routine this summer by adding at least one yoga class to your weekly workouts. There is an abundance of different sessions in Qatar, from beginners’ to advanced, detox yoga to candle-lit sessions. Try Yama Yoga Studios (www.yamayogastudios.com), Niya Yoga (www.niyayoga.qa), or B/Attitude Spa (www. battitudespadoha.com).

However, many relatively fit people prioritise cardio and strength training over more holistic types of fitness – sometimes to their peril, as yoga is also an effective way to reduce the risk of injury from high-impact activity.

As is the case with yoga in Qatar, dance classes have become very popular, so there are plenty of styles to choose from. For a pulse-raising workout, our pick is zumba, offered in numerous hotels, gyms, and fitness centers across the country. If you want to seriously improve your dance skills, though, classical ballet and contemporary dance courses for adults and children are available at the IAID Performing Arts Academy (www. iaidonline.org/dance). Other options available in Doha include Bollywood classes, hip hop, and capoeira (a Brazilian martial art with elements of dance and acrobatics). Try B/Attitude Spa (www.battitudespadoha.com), Strong Box (www.strongboxqatar.com/classes/), or The Ritz Carlton Doha (www.ritzcarlton.com/ en/hotels/qatar/doha/spa/fitness-center). n

Combining Business and Pleasure

ituated conveniently in the heart of Doha, City Centre Rotana Doha is a five-star business hotel in the business and commercial district of the city. Ideal for professionals and leisure travellers, the hotel is just 30 minutes away from the Hamad International Airport, has access to the mall, and is a few steps away from the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre. Standing 47 floors tall, with 381 stylishly furnished guest rooms, suites, and apartments, the hotel has seven dining venues and a full complement of facilities to delight and pamper its guests.

Hotel of Smiles It was scorching hot the Thursday afternoon I arrived at the hotel, and travelling with a toddler added to my stress. Queasy from the heat, drenched with sweat, vision blurring, I was carrying my 2-year-old son Yilmaz, his Mickey Mouse toy, and backpack. But as soon as I entered the lobby, my mood switched. Literally every staffer I met was smiling, including some guests for that matter. They even offered to carry my son for me. I guess happiness and warm hospitality is truly contagious. Checking in had never been this convenient for me before this treat. The moment I introduced myself, the front desk officer (as cheerful as everyone

else), told me everything I needed to know for my stay including my itinerary. I commend the hotel management for ensuring this smooth coordination. A few minutes afterwards, Front Office Director Kai Thomas came over and introduced himself. He briefly toured me around the hotel’s Ramadan IftarSohour venue, an opulently decorated ballroom and buffet area. I was also welcomed by Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Claudia Cartaya. We had a short chat while my son explored the lobby. I felt so welcome and I knew from that point on we would have a pleasant stay.

be the excellent sea and city skyline view from the room. Its vista is sure to calm and revive your spirit.

A tasteful interior and exceptional view I was handed my key card and escorted to the 24th floor. Unlike other hotels, old or new, the floor lobby didn’t give me a creepy feeling. It was suitably spacious but not winding, decorated with mirrors and warmly lighted. As soon as I opened the room door, I was in honest awe. I wasn’t expecting an elegantly designed room for a business-type hotel. We were given a spacious Club Rotana Premium Suite (one bedroom, receiving area, and dining area) and a connecting twin bedroom. The tasteful interior is contemporary with a warm

color scheme, fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and curtains, a recessed closet system for shelves, drawers, mini-bar, and safe, and 42” LCD TVs, lounge chair, and chandelier. What I found special and extraordinary was the elegant and spacious bathroom, where I could really enjoy my ‘me’ time. The toiletries were of a tasteful brand as well. The king-size bed was covered with soft and smooth sheets and fluffy pillows. I briefly rested and laid my back on the bed, wanting to just lie there and relax all day long. Satisfied palates I admit that my weight increased after such a short stay. The hotel generously provided us with buffet meals at the Olive Oil Restaurant, and I can safely say that any guest will share my dilemma of choosing from the delectable dishes and sweet treats available. A restful stay, guaranteed Since this is a business hotel, I presumed a soothing environment would be provided for people traveling on short trips, who would arrive tired and hoping for a much-needed rest. I was not disappointed. After our meal, we had a quick stroll at the mall beside the hotel. Upon returning to the hotel, we felt the bed pulling us in. So, we freshened up and tucked ourselves in. It was convenient that the room was equipped with an adjustable bedside lamp, as I needed to tend to my son in the middle of the night.

Given that I was weary from the day’s exertions, I thought I would still feel tired the next morning, even after a good sleep. But I thought wrong. I actually felt much refreshed, and to my surprise woke up early in the morning without an alarm. A pleasurable indulgence The next morning, after a sumptuous breakfast at Olive Oil Restaurant, we changed and headed to Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club for a quick swim. With the scenery and setting much to my liking, the short swim turned to be a longer one. We enjoyed the temperature-controlled outdoor pool for adults and kids. And we never had to worry about the sun, as there are shaded areas where one can relax.

At 1 p.m., I had a quick sauna to release body muscle tension, and then proceeded to my scheduled spa treatment and a quick pampering. Olga, the therapist assigned to me, gave me a spa service deluxe. With a full body massage, I felt my body succumbing to the relaxing strokes of her hands. We had a late lunch since we were still full from what we had during breakfast. Once again, the variety offered did not disappoint us. We went back to our room pleasantly satisfied. Show Me the Way to

ST. TROPEZ Text and Images by Francesca Cruz

A balance between simplicity and glamour, St. Tropez is the French Riviera’s distinguished vacation destination synonymous with chic affluence and sizzling summers.

D

espite the celebrities, gentry, and throngs of tourists that flock to this vacation spot in the French Riviera, St. Tropez remains “La Peregrina pearl” of the Côte d'Azur. This fanciful sherbet-colored fishing village is like a miniature Beverly Hills. It’s as postcard-picturesque as the images that populate Pinterest of a ‘50s era adolescent Brigitte Bardot, doll-faced and frolicking in its waters.

The historic charms of this seaside town with secluded coves and an effervescent nightlife are legendary—it was a place of inspiration for painters Maximilien Luce and Matisse, and a wellspring of artistry for novelist Colette in the 1920s. The ‘50s ushered in an influx of glamour with France’s matinée idols swarming to its shores. The ‘70s & ‘80s brought the young royals from all over Europe, and the ‘90s saw many a tycoon dock luxury megayachts close to adjacent matching villas. Till this day St. Tropez has remained a playground for the rich and famous. Where to stay For lodging, there is the Byblos Hotel, an institution in this town. A five-star property that is at the same time glitzy and refined, it was thrust into the spotlight in 1971 after rockstar Mick Jagger and Nicaraguan socialite Bianca Perez-Mora Macias celebrated their nuptials here. It’s become a haven for all things chic. Another recommended hotel option is the Residence Pinede. Opened in 1936, it’s celebrated for its first-class service, private beach and swimming pool, and tranquil ambiance. Both properties offer accommodations fit for a king or a jet setter, whatever title you prefer.

74

What to eat For a taste of what the locals enjoy, head to the café-bakery Sénéquier and indulge in a slice of Tarte Tropézienne. The pastry is a light and fluffy brioche cake with an almond crème filling that will put you in a foodie trance. For the freshest seafood to delight your taste buds, set off to Port Grimaud and La Table du Mareyeur. Don’t miss ordering the seabass or the rockfish. A great place for tapas is Le Dit Vin. Buddha statues and a whitewashed dining room and terrace welcome patrons, as does the truffle pasta, which is a standout on the menu. I plan on returning just for that pasta dish. For a cozy traditional dinner, L'Auberge des Maures is the oldest restaurant in town, and combines a homespun atmosphere with fine dining. What to do A walk to aid with digestion is in order after indulging in the local fare. Stroll to Place des Lices, the main plaza in town and watch the older villagers play boules, also called pétanque – think outdoor bowling but with smaller balls. In the summertime the streets along the square are lined with cars with marques like Ferrari, Bentley, and Maserati, creating a contrasting setting of old traditions with modern affluence. St. Tropez would not have it any other way.

St. Tropez epitomizes the sun-kissed, laid back, carefree lifestyle. The outfit du jour for many is a bathing suite, a sundress, sunglasses and a wide brim hat. A locally handmade straw tote finishes off the fashionable look. Throw in a towel and your favorite book and you’re ready to lounge at Pampelonne Beach, Club 55, or Tahiti Beach. The tote also makes for a great souvenir gift. What to see We touched upon tradition and luxury, but we mustn’t forget art, so don’t miss visiting the Museum of l'Annonciade. Although small, it has an impressive collection of modern art, from Matisse, George Braque, Klee, Gauguin, to Picasso. The collection concentrates on the early modern movements from the 1890s onwards, such as Fauvism and Pointillism. Another place not to miss is a museum devoted to butterflies, La Maison des Papillons. Set in a Provençal house owned by painter Dany Lartigue, the collection spreads out amongst two floors. There are over 35,000 species, many rare or endangered. Why to go There’s a bit of everything that's tantalizing in this part of the Riviera. You can bask in nature, hiking the coastal paths that run along the peninsula and lead to elevated panoramic views. You may relax in secluded beaches surrounded by swank villas that seem to dangle from the cliffs. You can make your way along the waterfront and down the bougainvillea-draped narrow streets lined with designer boutiques among the cafes and small bookstores.

This is one of the most famous beach hamlets in the world, and as other places fade in and out of popularity, St. Tropez remains a rare balance of glamor and simplicity. n

Visiting the

PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN Words and images by Jim Kersey

Brimming with cultural richness, wide biodiversity, and UNESCO world heritage sites, Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming a holiday destination of the highest rank.

A

s the nation leaves behind the internal conflict that once kept foreign visitors at bay, stability has opened up the diverse wonders of the island to an influx of tourists.

The “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” as it is sometimes called, continues to build on its success as a premier travel choice following several years of investment in its tourism industry. It is now a highly featured destination on travel blogs and visual platforms across the globe. A mere five hours from Doha by flight, there is no excuse not to tick this must-see destination off your list.

Nature and Diversity When visiting Sri Lanka’s major parks and reservations, or simply looking out of your car window, one is surrounded by plants, wildlife and vibrant colours. It may be one of the only places where your chances of seeing a wild peacock are equal to that of seeing a dog, as I realised after only a day of driving through the country’s flourishing landscape. Making a choice between the major wildlife hotspots is perhaps the most difficult decision you will have to make here. Any one alone offers vast opportunities for scenes of natural beauty and animal life reminiscent of your most vivid National Geographic-esque dreams. Yala National Park, for instance, is known to have the highest leopard densities in the world, while Minneriya and Udawalawe parks will let you observe vast numbers of undisturbed native elephants on safari. A personal favourite of mine was Sinharaja Rainforest. Even for the more seasoned travellers among you, you may encounter more reptile, insect, bird, and plant varieties in one visit here than you have encountered your whole life. Home to over 50 percent of the country's endemic species, the added effort to navigate the forest is truly worth it for those interested in biodiversity. If

you are visiting from Qatar, the contrast with the more arid environment of the Arabian Gulf may seem almost unreal. But be warned, leeches abound! Bring salt and plenty of it. Ancient Ruins Located off the southern tip of India, Sri Lanka has many cultural and historical connections with its large neighbour. It does, however, retain its own distinct heritage visible in the form of its impressive stone remnants of ancient kingdoms gone by. The cultural triangle, a popular circuit in the northern region of the island, served as the platform for the early Sinhalese civilisation harbouring the great cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. History buffs and appreciators of culture will want to make this a priority on their itineraries. Also, the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya resting atop a mountainous outcrop and looming over the surrounding lowlands is perhaps Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary sight and something not to be missed. Other notable relics within the triangle include Dambulla Cave, a magnificent treasure box of Buddhist art and religious history. Colonial Remnants Galle Fort, once the main port of call for ships travelling East to West during the 18th century, is where you should head to if, like me, you are a fan of colonial heritage.

Located close to the island's southernmost point, this modestly-sized fortified town is arguably the best preserved sea fort in the whole of Asia. While the remnants of its history as a Dutch colonial fort are truly impressive, what is remarkable is how despite many of the buildings having suffered from decay and years of wear, the fort carries with it an air of aged defiance in the face of changing times.

Hikkaduwa is also a great staging area for your return trip to Colombo airport, so you may want to use it as a final stop before reluctantly leaving behind Sri Lanka’s diverse and culturally rich offerings. n

With a wide array of restored colonial establishments, hotels, cafes, and restaurants each offering themselves up as a small oasis on your journey through these atmospheric streets, you will be charmed by the characteristic palette of faded pastel colours, deep colonial verandahs, and scattered vintage relics. Relaxation Finally, if you are in need of some relaxation, head to Hikkaduwa. Many of the southern beaches are renowned for their beauty, and a selection of both high-end and modestly-priced hotels compliment the laid-back atmosphere that presides all along the southern coastal roads. Sri Lanka hasn’t quite reached its potential in terms of matching its hospitality infrastructure to the demands of tourism across the island, yet the accommodation surrounding Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, and Nippon beaches are enough to keep those looking to recharge their batteries more than satisfied.

EZDAN HOTEL MASSAGE CENTER:

A PERFECT EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY Words by Luciana Cunha Franca

QH enjoys 50 minutes of deep relaxation in one of Doha’s best kept secrets. Theirs is a must-try massage that will transform your mood from stressed to serene.

Q

atar never stops surprising me with fantastic places to go and enjoy myself. Even though I know Ezdan Hotel well and have visited it many times, I had no idea that I could find there a perfect place to enjoy a massage. It was a Monday afternoon and one of the hottest days of the year so far. I was having a busy day -- driving, parking, meetings -- and I was looking forward to having a moment of serenity and relaxation. Located in the city centre, Ezdan Hotel’s towers are so iconic they are on Qatar’s post cards. I parked my car and rushed inside for some nice airconditioning and requested the location. The simply-named Massage Centre, with separate male and female areas, is on the fourth floor of Tower 1, the same level as the swimming pool. Sonia, my therapist, was the first to greet me, approaching with a big smile as we walked to the massage area, where I met Recreation Manager Marites. She was professional and polite. As I filled out the consultation form, we discussed what sort of massage would be best for me and at what pressure. Their massage menu has many options, from Asian to Middle Eastern traditions, at absolutely fantastic prices. I choose the Swedish massage – 50 minutes of relaxation for the entire body, accomplished by rubbing the body with long gliding strokes. This type of massage is beneficial for increasing oxygen

levels, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation, and easing body tension and stress. Before my massage I had a shower, then I went to my therapy room. Sonia was waiting for me with dim lights, candle essences, and relaxing music that made the atmosphere very peaceful. She asked me what essence I would like to use and I chose lavender, having heard that it calms your senses, which is what I needed.

If you are working in the West Bay city centre, go over to Ezdan Hotel on your lunch break and I promise you that you will be renewed after their massage. If you live far from city centre, it is truly worth a drive. My experience was absolutely perfect and very affordable -- the 50-minute Swedish massage I had was only QAR 170. Make your day perfect and change your state of mind for the better at Ezdan Massage Centre. n

Time passed and I have to tell you that I felt in a totally different world. Sonia is so far one of the best therapists I have ever had in my life, applying just the right amount of pressure throughout. The techniques she used took me into a state of deep relaxation; I wasn’t thinking about anything else, it felt like I was sleeping. Perhaps I had settled into an alpha state of mind, which makes you feel calmer, less anxious, and more creative. Halfway through, Sonia requested me to turn over and I was happy that I still had half of the time to enjoy the fantastic massage. When she said it was over I didn’t want to leave. The massage was so soothing that it took me time to get back to myself again. My day completely changed for the better. I was a different person after my treatment -refreshed, serene, and at peace. I absolutely recommend Ezdan Hotel Massage Centre to everyone who needs time for themselves to relax and unwind.

The Dish On Qatar

Here Comes The Sun Words by Carmela Yao

It’s summer, that time of the year when we say hi to bright and flowery dresses, sunglasses, flip flops, and tanning lotion. But too much fun in the sun can slow you down. QH brings you five rules for a better summer.

E

veryone is thinking of going splashing at the beach and the water parks, or picnicking in the park, but with the temperature soaring over 50 degrees, there’s always the risk of heatstroke and dehydration. Here’s how to safely enjoy summer.

First Rule: Keep your body hydrated. Drinking ample amounts of water regularly keeps your body hydrated even if you are not thirsty. Make sure to bring a bottle of water wherever you go. To energize you, a lemon and honey drink is helpful.

dresses because they can make you feel more at ease. Remember, less is more during summer. Third Rule: Use sunscreen. Stay out of the sun especially at noon. Whenever you head out, make sure to apply sunscreen. Use an umbrella or a hat. Experts recommend that if you’re staying outside for prolonged period of time, use a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen; if you are sun-sensitive, use a 50 SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Second Rule: Stay clean, fresh, and comfortable. Take a shower at least twice a day. It will make you feel fresh, and cleanliness helps reduce the risk of illness. Always bring a facial spray because it will not only help tone your face but it also refreshes and moisturizes your skin. Be sure to check the label and use only the ones with natural mineral water.

Fourth Rule: Wear UV-blocking sunglasses. Most of us only focus on our skin when we speak about damage from the sun’s rays. We forget that it is also harmful to our eyes and eye-lids. Using the correct UV sunglasses serves as a sunblock for our eyes. My optometrist says the ones with UV400 or higher can block 99 percent of UV rays, and if the lenses are polarized, the better. Make sure the pair you get is authentic.

To be comfortable, one must say goodbye to leather and hello to cotton. Wear loosefitting clothes, long sleeves, and light colored

Fifth Rule: Eat right. Food poisoning and waterborne diseases are common during summer. Eat home-cooked

80

food and avoid eating street food or food from an open kiosk. Don't eat food that is too old or has been left out in the sun. If you're out, drink only filtered water. Eat light meals frequently in small amounts. Indulge in salads and summer fruits like melons, citrus fruits, and peaches to help keep you cool. Do not take alcohol and caffeine, they are dehydrating. Extremely hot weather can weaken our immune system and make us sick. It leads to heat stroke, skin irritation, fatigue, cough, and other summer-related diseases. Prevent them by always taking vitamin C. Turn to tried-and-tested old-school ways by turning off the lights and gadgets, dipping our feet in cold water, sleeping on a bamboo mat, or placing a bowl full of ice cubes in front of an electric fan. Most of all, listen to your body. If you feel hot or thirsty, drink water immediately. Don't let the temperature get you down. Stay healthy, enjoy summer, and beat the heat! .n

AAB TREASURE HUNT BLAZES THE TRAIL IN CSR INITIATIVES Blazing the trail in corporate social responsibility (CSR), the Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros. Co. (AAB) Treasure Hunt is a CSR initiative promoting the public parks in Qatar. It is not a race but a matter of managing time while completing the Park Challenges such as solving riddles and puzzles, performing tasks or activities, and looking for “treasures” at the parks. AAB Treasure Hunt is a collaboration between AAB and Public Parks Department (PPD) of the Ministry of Municipality & Environment (MME). To date, the Ministry has renovated existing parks and added new locations across Qatar.

QATAR MUSEUMS’ FIRE STATION ARTISTIN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMME ENDS ITS SECOND YEAR Qatar Museums’ (QM) Fire Station: Artist in Residence programme, a landmark initiative designed to grow the next generation of artistic talent, has opened its End of Residency exhibition titled “Unfolding Creative Methods,” which celebrates the accomplishments of the 20 talented artists who have been in residency at the Fire Station for the past nine months. Under the visionary guidance of Qatar Museums’ Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the exhibition will be open until 19 Aug. 2017, and showcases a selection of striking works from each of the artists during their residency. The exhibition is on show at the Fire Station’s Garage Gallery, and features works spanning a range of different mediums including art, photography, video, design, painting, poetry and drawings, and incorporates a variety of processes, research, and finished outcomes. The exhibition provides artists with a platform where they can showcase their works and skills to the media, the community, fans of art and culture, and collectors. The exhibition showcases artworks by ten Qatari artists in residence, including Abeer Al Kuwari, Hana Al Saadi, and Fahad Ahmed Al Obaidly. Abeer Al Kuwari’s works focus on portrait photography and still life, and her work is influenced by Qatar’s heritage and environment. Hana Al Saadi’s kinetic sculptures allow viewers to admire the simple movements in still objects that we see every day. Fahad Ahmed Al Obaidly is a fashion designer and curator inspired by his profound love for culture and heritage that he translates into his trend-setting designs.

These parks serve as a family hub providing ample space for families to enjoy nature as well as for children to have safe play areas. Out of the 87 renovated and new parks across Qatar, five were visited by the participating teams. They cruised safely from Al Wakrah, Al Thumama Family (South) Park, Oneizah Park, and Dahl Al Hamam, to Al Khor before heading back to Al Abdulghani Tower for the final challenge. Al Khor Park became the favourite park of participants on account of its space, new facilities, and mini-zoo. Many of the participants commented that they have just discovered the beauty of these parks and will visit them in future. According to the participating teams, the event was a great day for bonding with family and friends. They got to know about each other better and explained that teamwork made a difference. This is significant to AAB because teamwork is one of its corporate values in creating a successful working culture. One significant highlight expressed by the participants was their recognition of the fun attitude of the AAB staff who volunteered as park coordinators. They managed to maintain fun while patiently explaining the challenges to every team and ensuring that rules were not breached. Working towards a green environment is one of the CSR pillars for AAB. This is the primary reason behind AAB’S close collaboration with the PPD and the Ministry.

MSHEIREB MUSEUMS GATHER EDUCATORS TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL MUSEUMS DAY Msheireb Museums, an integral aspect of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) and a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation, celebrated International Museums Day 2017 with an interactive forum that brought educators together to drive the cultural development of Qatar. Hosted at Bin Jelmood House in MDD’s Heritage Quarter, the forum invited students, academics, cultural leaders, and members of the media to commemorate this global event. This year’s theme was “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.”

This theme highlights the importance of museums in society as they work to promote peaceful relationships between people, and presents contested history, which is the first step in envisioning a shared future. The interactive day brought to light a new peer-led volunteer programme, which Mshiereb Museums has implemented with the help of academic and educational institutions and youth centres. Entitled “Msheireb Museums Friends,” this mutually-beneficial volunteer programme empowers teachers and educational leaders to become tour guides in the museums and enhance their skills to lead student tours. The program will also enable students to enhance their leadership skills while introducing the community to the country’s rich culture. Following the presentation, a panel discussion and workshop took place, enabling participants to discuss how museums and educational institutions can work together to support their curriculum and bridge the gap presented by language and culture.

MATHAF DEDICATES LATEST EXHIBITION TO STUDENT ARTWORKS The much anticipated annual Mathaf Student Art Competition and Exhibition (SAC&E) recently celebrated the completion of its fourth season with a student art exhibition at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. More than 120 students from four schools across the country took part in the competition for a chance to showcase their artworks at the museum. Presented by Qatar Museums (QM) under the leadership of its Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the exhibition, titled “Urban Lights,” presents a selection of 20 unique artworks that will be on show until 10 July 2017. Commenting on the project, Maral J. Bedoyan, Deputy Director of Learning and Outreach, said: “We are very proud of the success of this competition, which is an original Mathaf educational programme that supports QM’s commitment for art education and creativity. Through this initiative, we aim to nurture talent and engage children from a young age to teach them to appreciate art. “Involving an artist mentor in the project expanded the creative process for both art teachers and the students, reinforcing the Museum’s mission to connect art historical narratives to daily life, and art education to creative learning.” This initiative comes as part of Mathaf’s commitment to teach art history, increase knowledge of the museums’ collection, and advocate for art education and creative learning. Mathaf’s year-long educational programmes are designed to stimulate creativity, inquiry, and an appreciation of modern and contemporary art in the region.

QATAR AIRWAYS CELEBRATES TRADITIONAL GARANGAO NIGHT Airline hosts authentic Garangao event for employees and their familes Qatar Airways recently organised a memorable Garangao event for its employees and their families, highlighting the airline’s commitment to preserving Qatar’s rich culture and heritage. This year’s edition of the highly-anticipated annual mid-Ramadan children’s festival featured festivities with a particular focus on traditional Qatari games. The traditional celebrations were held at Regency Halls, a banquet hall strategically located in the heart of Doha. The tradition enabled children to truly experience the spirit of Ramadan, the Month of Giving, as they received gift bags that included nuts and sweets. All of the attendees at the Garangao celebration were treated to suhoor, a customary pre-dawn meal during Ramadan, with ethnic Qatari dishes and traditional drinks, enabling everyone to enjoy an experience immersed in local heritage and culture. This annual children’s event is celebrated on the 14th day of Ramadan each year after the Islamic sunset prayer. The name comes from the Gulf word gara which describes the sound of things knocking together – such as the sound of children knocking on doors, or the nuts and sweets they gather knocking together in the cloth bag they carry around their neck. Traditionally, children would dress in trendy traditional clothing, and sing Garangao songs as they visit their neighbourhood homes.

GLOBAL ACADEMY INTERNATIONAL WINS TOP ACCREDITATIONS FOR WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION in line with its aim to deliver quality education to students, Global Academy International earned the Qatar National School Accreditation (QNSA) in April. The academy also received the renewal of its AdvancED Accreditation with honours for a period of five years, following its last accreditation in 2012. Both accreditations recognise the academy’s continuous efforts in maximising learning outcome through its range of competitive academic programmes and teaching systems. As part of the process, the school conducted a comprehensive selfassessment involving students, parents, and staff to chart out an effective development plan for itself. This was followed by a rigorous on sitereview that entailed school visits and monitoring by professional teams from both organizations as well interviews of all stakeholders. The QNSA is a national accreditation system that introduces educational reforms among existing schools in Qatar. AdvancED represents the largest community of education professionals in the world that offers independent, third-party assessments of schools to ensure all learners realise their full potential.

QATAR MUSEUMS LAUNCHES EXECUTIVE TEACHERS COUNCIL Following the successful Teachers Council initiative launched last fall, Qatar Museums (QM) invited a select group of teachers to join the Executive Teachers Council (ETC), a platform designed to integrate teachers into QM’s education programme planning. The ETC will act as an advisory body to QM educators and will encourage teachers to share their expertise and knowledge with QM to enrich its education programming offered to schools. The first ETC meetings in English and Arabic took place recently at the Doha Fire Station, hosting 37 teachers who will serve as ETC members during the next academic year 2017-2018. The intention of the meetings was to develop seamless communication channels between the schools and QM in order to enable teachers to access various educational resources and identify new ways of encouraging larger numbers of students to visit various QM sites and exhibitions. Working closely together, QM educators and ETC members will develop programmes and learning materials that are aligned with different school curricula and that make use of QM’s educational resources and collections. Suggestions put forward during the ETC meetings will serve as a roadmap for QM to strategically engage with teachers in Qatar.
