WANDERLUST
WITH LOUIS
WITH THE SEASON OF TRAVEL HERE, WE HAD TO GIVE YOU THE SCOOP ON OUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL BLOGGER. LOUIS COLE HAS MADE IT HIS MISSION IN LIFE TO LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST, AND WE’RE HERE TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THIS NOT-SO-TYPICAL TRAVEL INFLUENCER...
S
ummer is finally here and the wanderluster in all of us is ready to come out and play. It’s a time of experiencing new places, starting new adventures, and basically being anywhere but home! We’re all doing our research on the best deals and trying to figure out where we want our next location pin to fall. Well, while this month’s issue is here to help you out with all of that, we thought we’d shed a little light on the genuine and down to earth approach Louis Cole takes to travelling the world… Starting back in 2011 with a few short vlogs of his trip to Norway, the now 35 year old Brit took the YouTube world by storm. As one of the first batch of actual YouTubers, his influence naturally grew more and more with the growth of YouTube. But what really made Louis stand out amongst the other budding bloggers within the travel category was his genuine and fresh take on exploring the world.
14
CELEBRITY FEATURE For Louis, travelling wasn’t about getting that perfectly tailored shot or working on sponsorships with hotels and such. It was about exploring other cultures, meeting people from different backgrounds, and travelling in a simple no-fuss and affordable manner. That outlook paired with his genuine kindness that came across in every video is what allowed him to grow the way he did.
The traveller even found love on his adventure. Coupling up with fellow nomadic travel blogger @ Rayawashere, the pair have taken their love just about anywhere across the world. Their outlook together on
life and love and just an appreciation for the diversity across this earth is inspiring to say the least. So, let’s try to take Louis’ words as a motto for life: peace out, enjoy life and live the adventure.
You could say Louis has been just about everywhere. From Paris to Bali to even venturing to North Korea in 2016! Recently, Cole’s nomadic lifestyle sparked a unique adventure, Beyond Borders. That project sees him travel around the world in 90 days in a four-seater plane piloted by his close friend, stopping in 22 countries along the way and making a documentary on global diversity.

WE ASK THE IRONMAN RACE COMPETITOR ABOUT HIS EXPEIENCE AND HIS NEW BOOK.
GET CULTURED
IRONMAN NASSER AL MOHANNADI WAS ONE OF THE FIRST QATARIS TO EVER COMPLETE THE IRONMAN RACE IN SOUTH AFRICA BACK IN 2016. NOW ATHLETE TURNED AUTHOR, IS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH HIS LATEST BOOK, HOW TO BE AN IRONMAN. THE AUTHOR CHATS WITH QH FOR AN INSIGHT ON HIS NEW ACHIEVEMENT.
18
As with any big project, difficult undertaking or challenge, the key to success is strategic planning. I tried to anticipate every aspect of the race beforehand so that I would be as prepared as possible for the actual race when it happened. I know that there are obviously some unexpected challenges that you cannot prepare for, but if you plan well enough you can keep the unexpected to a minimum. There were a lot of times that the challenge seemed daunting; it took patience and commitment to get to a point when I felt ready to participate in the race. There is a widely-belief notion that once you simply start exercising or training you will see results and improvements immediately. This is definitely not true. The process is long and arduous but it can be done. It was extremely difficult at times to persevere, but without strategic planning, patience and commitment, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.
What was the best advice you were given before entering the race?
I was told to always think positive when facing challenges. This great advice really helped me focus on things that I could control during the race without being discouraged by things out of my control. I also really believe this is great advice for life in general. Our actions and mindset are inextricably linked, so if you focus positively on things you can control in your life, it will help you balance those things that are out of your control.
You subsequently wrote: How to Be an Ironman, where you take the reader through your journey. How did that book come about?
This is my first foray into publishing and I really enjoyed it. It’s important to me that I leave a legacy of sorts to next generations in Qatar. I overcame a lot of cultural and societal challenges on my path towards completing the race and I think it’s important for others to be able to have an example that with hard work and determination, dreams can come true.
Can you give us the scoop on the process of the book? So many people were interested in my story once they learned of my goals prior to the race and the idea of writing it into a book. I started by recording my
GET CULTURED
You were one of the first Qataris to complete the Ironman Race in South Africa back in 2016. How did you prepare for such a grueling competition?
memories of the actual race right after I finished it and then worked backwards through my memories to recapture the training process and reflect on that. Publishing a book is something new to me and I had to really immerse myself into the world of publishing. Like anything I do, I did it with full commitment and passion so I actually traveled overseas to visit book fairs and met with different publishing houses and experts to learn more. When I met with Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press, it was an instant compatibility because they provide a great platform for emerging Qatari authors. They supported me throughout the editorial process and are just as passionate about my book and its content as I am.
Three things you’ve learned after writing your book? 1. Pick a publishing house that aligns with your goals and that has a team that not only cares about the commercial success of the book, but one that cares for the actual content of your book and for your development as a writer. 2. I have a lot to learn about writing narratives! I learned that the best tool was my voice recordings as I made them right after the events happened and there was so much passion in my experiences, as I was speaking from the heart. In the future, I plan to write from the heart as well. 3. I learned that it is imperative to be open and welcome constructive comments about writing from experts.
Can you gives us an insight on what readers can expect when reading, How to Be an Ironman?
This book serves two types of audiences:
Those who like to read stories and as well for those who care for human development and management. I think that is what has made it a huge success. It combines remarkable human experiences and achievements with actual advice on how to apply the lessons I learned to your own life.
What would you advise anyone who is going through difficult moments in their lives and are planning to quit?
I really believe that life without setting goals is like running through a maze without a plan: you’ll get nowhere, fast. The Ironman race, and training for endurance sports in general, has taught me how to set a goal and how to achieve it. I would definitely advise anyone going through difficult moments in their life to stop for a second, and plan out the path to their ‘finish line’ or ultimate goal. And sometimes that may mean that quitting is the right solution, until you can strategize differently or once again to find a different path that works for you. The finish line is always there: you just need to plan how to reach it, focus on your goal, be patient with your progress, and believe you can do it.
Have you set a new challenge, if so, can you share it with us?
Yes, I have! It’s confidential and will be announced soon. It is definitely something to do with physical endurance sports. I believe that sports teach us mental skills, build our confidence, and encourage us to get up even after falling down.
And last but not least, who was your biggest inspiration for the race and writing this book?
My Mother: For teaching me the value of planning; my father: For showing me that nothing is impossible.

Rick Enders
GENERAL MANAGER OF MARRIOTT MARQUIS CITY CENTER DOHA HOTEL, RICK ENDERS, SHARES WITH QH WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AT THE HELM OF SUCH PROPERTY.
3. The workforce is one of the most important assets in every company, how do you uplift the morale of your co-workers?
It’s very easy, you take great care of them so they are able to take great care of the guests, this philosophy we have in place since the founder started the company in 1927.
4. What can we expect in 2018 for such prominent hotel?
We continue to further strengthen our position within the market place, ensuring that we provide first class service to make sure that our guests continue to come back to visit us. It’s all about loyalty at this stage for the company and for us on property.
5. How would you define success?
Success is never final, we should look forward and not backwards, success is exceeding expectations in all aspects, financial, guest satisfaction and associate satisfaction.
6. What are some lessons you’ve learned within the industry that could serve as advice to young and aspiring adults?
1. How long have you been in Doha, and have you had previous experience in the Gulf ?
I have been here since the 25th of April 2018; my first experience in the Middle East was from 1997 till 2000.
2. Newly appointed General Manager 20
of Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, what are some exciting new things you’ll be implementing within the property?
At the current stage it is more about analyzing the property and to get a feel for the market, too early to say for implementing exciting new things.
Explore the world, work in different countries / continents, understanding of different cultures, these elements are important since the world is getting smaller and smaller, more and more people are travelling so it is crucial that you understand their needs prior to exceeding their expectations.
7. And finally, your favorite spot to unwind after a stressful day?
Sailing! I truly enjoy since I don’t have the possibility to do that everywhere I am into cycling now since 1 ½ years – racing bicycle – doing cycling tours up to 130 km.
MAVERICK
A POPULAR GENRE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THE SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIMENT IS STILL RELATIVELY NEW IN QATAR. BUT ONE MAN IS HOPING TO CHANGE THAT. MEET G. VALENTINO, SOCIAL MEDIA MAVERICK AND VLOGGER WITH A PASSION FOR CHALLENGING AND CHANGING THE WAY WE THINK. WORDS: KIM WYATT
Usually I describe myself as a video content creator. I feel this is the most appropriate title. My posts include social experiments, street challenges, interviews, vlogs, comedy skits and more. I’m always challenging people to define me. Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of being placed into a category. I don’t like the idea of restrictions and simply try to have as much fun as possible. If I can deliver a positive message along the way, then that’s a bonus.
What inspires you to create content?
I have a high appetite for risk taking and it’s something I draw upon when creating my content. When I first arrived two years ago, social experiments were basically non-existent in Qatar. I saw a niche and thought ‘let me be the person to bring them here’. Social experiments are very popular around the world and I felt Qatar was missing out. Also I’ve always had a desire to create fresh and authentic content involving people.
What is the purpose of your social experiments? Ultimately the purpose is to create content that is engaging for my audience. I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing my viewers happy. At the same time, I enjoy the challenge of creating social experiments and being the first to bring this style of content to Qatar. It’s important to mention that Qatar is an amazingly unique place with amazing
people. I’ve started to see that my social experiments are showing a side to Qatar that not everyone is familiar with, especially the outside world. It’s always great to see my content impact other people’s views in a positive way.
Are there certain social issues you’re most interested in? Qatar has people from all around the world living in harmony. This interests me. Fundamentally I’m very curious about human behavior. In particular - how people behave towards each other in unfamiliar situations. My curiosity leads me to cover many social issues from honesty, equality and environmental issues.
Describe the format for your social experiments.
It usually involves being filmed by a cameraman in Doha. I usually target unsuspecting members of the public and try to provoke a reaction to a situation. If a reaction takes place then we aim to interview the people involved.
happen outside of the comfort zone.
What do you see the role of social media?
It has many different roles. It can be used for entertainment, information, advice, advertising, connecting with people or as an outlet for creativity. It’s relevant to so many people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or social class.
How do people usually react in your social experiments? Do you think social media When I talk to people about can create change in society? creating social experiments sometimes there’s a reluctance to be involved. This is perfect for me because I love being told I can’t do something! I use this as my motivation and ask myself “what’s the worst that can happen?” Yes it’s still difficult sometimes. It involves a lot of planning to be culturally sensitive at all times but I’m a strong believer that great things
Social media is a very powerful tool. I don’t watch TV or news anymore. The applications on my phone are the main sources of information and I believe it’s the same for a lot of people in my generation. Essentially
social media can impact an individual’s ideas and choices they make in everyday life. The danger is there is no way of screening the content and the true impact on society. I hope that if social media is used in the right way it will improve the world that we live in.

Art Scenes Marking of the OneYear Blockade Anniversary WITH THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE BLOCKADE, IT IS A TIME OF REFLECTION. THE PEOPLE OF QATAR ARE LOOKING BACK ON THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE PAST YEAR AND HOW THIS NATION WITHSTOOD THEM. QATAR MUSEUMS HAVE UNVEILED TWO PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONS TO MARK THIS ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE BLOCKADE.
Q
atar Museums have spearheaded the art scene within Qatar. With the one year anniversary of the blockade in Qatar, British artist Martin Creed and emerging Qatari Artoonist Ghada Al Khater have put forth two innovative art installations to represent the year and commemorate a historic time of unprecedented national solidarity and the power of hope that brought the people of Qatar together. The first piece is Martin Creed’s mutable, “Everything is Going to be Alright” installation, which was newly created for the context of the anniversary of Qatar’s blockade and showcased on the façade of Al Riwaq gallery. The bright LED piece provides a moment of doubletake in urban landscapes and acts as a reassuring message for everyone that passes by. Originally executed in 1999 for a temporary commission in Hackney, the artwork is one of the great postconceptualist pieces of the late 20th century. The second piece introduces Qatar

to another creative commentary by political ARToonist Ghada Al Khater who generated tremendous praise for her humorous take on the blockade. “A Blessing in Disguise” is Ghada’s Arabic answer to Creed’s “Everything is Going to be Alright.” The familiar proverb formed a significant part of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s historical speech on July 21st, 2017, in which he addressed the citizens of Qatar for the first time since the start of the blockade.
Displayed on the Fire Station’s façade, the sign serves as a simple and gentle reminder that there is always a silver lining. This is not the first art initiative that QM has launched as a commentary on the blockade. Last year’s “100 days of blockade” graffiti at the Fire Station, saw five local and expat artists producing emotive artworks reflecting their personal take on the political situation.
Fire Station is located at Mohammad Bin Thani St, between Corniche and Al Saad. Open daily from 8am until 11pm and Fridays from 1pm until 11pm. Call: 4422 4222. Al Riwaq Gallery is located at Al Corniche St, open daily from 9am until 7pm and Fridays from 1.30pm until 7pm. Call: 4452 5555.

THE DUCHESS OF STREETWEAR CREATOR AND FOUNDER OF FASHION BRAND VENUS KARMA VALERIA MAZZEI, IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENT. THE ITALIAN ENTREPRENEUR IS SETTING NEW WAVES IN DOHA WITH HER STREETWEAR CLOTHING BRAND, AND WE SIT DOWN WITH THE DESIGNER FOR AN INSIDE SCOOP. What brought you to start Venus Karma?
Basically I started back in September with a handbags collection. It was very challenging at the beginning because it wasn’t my audience, and I sell through Instagram, so I needed to focus on that since the bags were for a different and much more mature audience. We started off with a collection of 20 pieces, and we actually did pretty well with that collection. We are bringing another handbag collection in September, with a much-updated version of it since people still ask for those bags.
So why the name Venus Karma?
Firstly, Venus is the goddess of love and I wanted to put my Italian/Latin roots with it and Venus has the same initial letter as mine. And then Karma because I believe very much in karma, and I believe everyone will get what they deserve; positively and negatively of course.
Being a young entrepreneur can be quite challenging, do you have a team to help you out?
I am completely on my own, but I do have my mom to help me out – let’s say she has the ‘momager’ title. Being so young, I need help with logistics, money, advice, etc. I come from a family very business-oriented and actually my grandmother was the first one to own a Gucci store in our province, outside Rome where I was born. Also, when my grandmother died back in 2014, my mom wanted to continue that legacy so in a way Venus Karma is my grandmother.
Real leather handmade bags made in Italy with Swarovski and gold ornaments
How would you describe the brand’s style?
Contemporary, multi-ethnic since I add some Arabic words to the designs. Also I would use mischievous.
When you design, who is your main target?
I have a very focus target now, which is based on my Instagram followers; an age range between 14-35. Even 40. I get a lot of requests since I also do caps, wallets and passport holders.
Where does Venus Karma manufacture?
We do everything in Thailand. I did a very in-depth research on where to get the best quality, so I travel quite a bit there to check that everything is ok. Also, at this point there isn’t much design I do since our products are all custom-made with embroidery.
What have been some challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You’re still in school, how do you balance being an entrepreneur and a student?
Any advice to young girls like you who wish to pursue this path?
After coming home from school, I do outfit images with the brand’s pieces at my office and some days I am very busy with clients and pickups. And when some ask for delivery, I don’t like using a driver since I like meeting my customers one-on-one, I think public relations are very important.
Creativity is not enough. Having business fundamentals is important.
Clear thoughts and a clear path. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but thankfully I had my mom who guided me into the right way. Also understand the audience, the purpose, and how to manage and complete the circle of creating to the shipping of the product.

You’re a lawyer by trade, how did you get into the fashion/beauty scene?
Fashion and beauty are within every and each woman. Being a lawyer does not exclude you from that! The question is how do you balance between being a social figure and a lawyer? I would say, I consider social media a fun thing to do when I want to take a break from law school! It reflects my daily life as student away from home, in London and a young entrepreneur.

BEAUTY TALK
What were some challenges or judgements you had to overcome along your public career?
It definitely has to be not having my privacy at my age is the biggest challenge. Someone as young as I am wants to live her youth to the fullest, being surrounded with so many people who can and will be judging every step you take is extremely exhausting.
How do you handle online pressure?
I simply don’t consider it to be a pressure. I look at it as having way too many friends who support and love me unconditionally! This makes me thankful and grateful every single day.
What has been the best advice you’ve received since being in the public eye?
The best advice I have received is to be careful around people and make sure people earn your trust, slowly. Keep your positivity but remember to be cautious, not everyone is the same.
Summer is just around the corner, your top 5 beauty products?
I love skincare and believe in taking care from within. My top 5 beauty products are a good moisturizer, sunscreen, bb cream, lip balm and cocoa butter.
How would you describe your style?
My style is classic yet very much my age! Young & full of life.
If you could swap closets with a celebrity, who would it be?
I would swap closets with Princess Diana or Queen Rania. Both women, very elegant, very unique.
And if you could sit down with anyone (dead or alive) to ask your burning questions, who would it be and why?
I would sit down with Hitler. He is such a dark personality and a dictator that people still don’t speak much of worldwide. I would want to understand his thought process for doing what he did, to understand what kind of personality this man had and how it allowed him to carry forward all his actions against several people.
So, House of Rawan is soon to be released. Can you give us an insight scoop about it?
We have actually launched already! From the name “house”, it will hopefully be a beauty house for every women.
What brought you to start House of Rawan?
I started House of Rawan because I believed in a brand that represents what I truly like and what I would truly wear on daily basis! I wanted to present products that are affordable to everyone yet wearable at anytime.
If you could create a dream collaboration with anyone for a beauty brand, who would it be with?
I would collaborate with Chanel makeup or fashion. Chanel is simply a dream to every classic elegant woman.

Co-founder and social media mogul, Marianna Hewitt
As a beauty junkie, addict, hoarder, all of the above, I just had to get my hands on this. After a few obligatory posts on my own Instagram, it was time to share the results with you all. Now, I’ve tried my fair share of face masks...and then some. So when I say: “A mask is a game changer,” you’d best believe it is worth giving a try. The Jet Lag Mask is a versatile product; while it can generally be used as a mask that is applied for 10min and rinsed off, it can also be left on overnight for an intensive treatment! (Well of course I had to try both methods.) Applied as a typical face mask left for 10min and later removed with a wet face cloth, this gave my skin the instant boost it needed. My skin was left unbelievably hydrated and supple, while also slightly tightening my pores – it was the perfect quick fix premakeup application.
C
an you remember the last time you got a solid eight hours of sleep? Yeah, not within this decade for me… Lack of sleep doesn’t do wonders for my mood, but it certainly does the most damage where my skin is concerned. (And here is where the Jet Lag Mask comes in.) Whether you’re an insta-addict or just peruse the social media app occasionally, you’re guaranteed to have come across this unassuming blue tube that has taken the beauty world by storm. As with most beauty trends, the obsession has been set off by social media mogul Kim Kardashian raving about it. Beauty gurus Marianna Hewitt & Lauren Gore Island, have blessed the beauty

world with the release of their brand Summer Fridays, that has recently debuted and given the face-mask industry quite a hit. The Jet Lag Mask, as the name would assume, targets that post-travel worsefor-wear skin. With summer here and travel in the air, who doesn’t desperately need a quick fix? You know what we’re talking about. That congested, freshly broken out, extremely dried out, completely over-life-kind of skin. Well, this mask promises to reverse the
The real obsession kicked in, however, when I used it overnight, I woke up with baby’s soft skin – I mean it! I applied this cult beauty product as my last step to my skincare routine using patting motions and woke up as a new woman. Excuse the dramatics. But this mask just does that to me! My skin was plump, smooth, soft, insanely hydrated and I actually felt like I could skip makeup for once that day. With so many insta-hyped products, it’s tricky to figure out which are worth adding to your cart. I’m here to tell you, this viral mask is actually obsessionworthy. Where did you discover your passion for cooking?
My passion for cooking came from growing up and having my father being the cook in the house – when I watched him cook he made it seem so easy and I learned the basics from him. Basics such as learning that not every meal has to be mixed, eaten or accompanied by rice!
Who else has inspired you in your career?
A number of chefs have crossed my path – including Chef Augusto Tombolato from the Westin Palace in Milan. His passion and ethics was amazing and I learned a lot from him about etiquette in the kitchen.
Can you please describe your signature dish?
That would be the Tomahawk. It is a huge piece of meat – between 1.2Kg and 1.5Kg, from Australia and of the very best quality. It is marinated in spices, grilled and basted with flavoured butter. It is served with caramelized onions and sides of your choice. It’s a great amount of meat and so we tend to have customers come in to share it, or even mostly group of men will be in to compete with each other as to who can tackle it and finish it!
ns endatio m m o c Re Chef’s
How do you ensure that you are cooking with the finest quality meat? We only use local suppliers who source the very finest meat from the US and Australia.
Which dessert would you recommend we try?
Sticky Toffee Pudding – with a glassy toffee sauce and served with vanilla ice cream. It’s amazing and melts in your mouth. It goes perfectly after a wonderful meal that consists of meat. A beautiful ending to a beautiful night out.
Australian Black Angus Tenderloin
Why do you prefer cooking a la carte to catering for large numbers of people?
At Hunters, we do cook for large groups, which is always fun and I always assist in big weddings. But a la carte is more personal and I can interact with my guests more. I can find out exactly what they want and how we can adjust accordingly so we can make the dining experience even better.

We are so diverse it’s unbelievable! At first it can be challenging – English is not everyone’s first, second or even third language. RED ORCHID: DOHA’S NEW THAI HOTSPOT THERE IS A NEW VENUE IN TOWN, BUT WILL IT LEAVE A CULINARY MARK IN THE CITY? QH TEAM FINDS OUT AS THEY TRY THEIR UPCOMING NEW MENU.
R
ed Orchid is the latest addition to Doha’s culinary scene. Located in new Ezdan Palace Hotel, this new venue is set to offer Thai cuisine, indoor and alfresco dining options. Opening this month, the restaurant is gearing up with an explosive mix of flavours for anyone who wishes to dive into Thai cuisine with an affordable price range. The restaurant also offers an open kitchen and two private dining rooms. The décor is sleek, contemporary and clean. Spacious even. We kicked off our culinary journey with a Thai style assorted appetizers; a spicey minced chicken salad, shrimp toast, chicken satay (our favourite) and fish cake. So for anyone who doesn’t know what to order, this is the perfect starter to prep your palate for what’s yet to come. Obviously we went for more. And next up we tried their delicious and fresh Som Tam (papaya salad); a shredded green papaya mixed with dried shrimp, fresh squeezed lime juice, palm sugar, fresh chili, tomatoes and roasted peanuts. If you ask us, this was a treat! Not only was the salad fresh for the palate but also, it was light and its portion was epic perfect for three. Gai Yaang (bar-b-q chicken) was the dish we had along the papaya salad; with a coconut flavour to its chicken accompanied with sticky rice, the mix of flavours was beyond explosive. Trust us, this was heavenly. Next we tried their Pad Thai dish. Simple, exquisite, delicious, delectable – can’t think of any more adjectives to describe this dish. Everything you’d wish in a Pad Thai really. And last but not least, we ventured with a Thai pineapple fried rice; a style fried rice with pineapple, raisin, onion and coriander – this dish was also a delight. A popular upcoming dish if you ask us. So if you’re looking for an authentic, cosy and Thai vibe, this place is perfect for you. And the dishes are big enough if you’re into sharing and wish to order a variety of options.

THE DIET EDIT
THE TRAVEL DIET IF YOU ARE THAT PERSON WHO IS ALWAYS ON THE GO, AND CONSTANTLY TRAVELING FROM A TO Z, WHETHER IT BE FOR PLEASURE OR FOR WORK, IT MAY FEEL LIKE YOU ARE NEVER ABLE TO COMMIT TO A GOOD DIET PLAN. WELL HERE IS JUST THE TICKET, TO KEEP YOU ON TRACK WHEREVER IN THE WORLD YOU MAY BE, LEAVING YOU TO JUST COUNT MEMORIES AND NOT CALORIES.
Remember preparation is key, so here are some tips to help you hit the road with confidence.
DINE WELL PRE-DEPARTURE
Fill up on lower-carb foods groups and rather opt for choosing items such as: beef, poultry, seafood, vegetables (except potatoes), fruit, nuts, eggs, cheese, milk, plain yogurt, water, low-carb protein bars and shakes, unsweetened coffee and tea.
QUICK BREAKFAST IDEAS:
• Hard boiled eggs • Cooked poultry • Plain Greek yogurt with cream, berries, and nuts
54
Our bodies tend to need a lot of protein to function at its optimum, and that’s even more so when we travel and protein, as opposed to carbohydrates, may help you to feel more alert, which may come in handy if you have a tough travel schedule. Low-carb Snack Ideas: • Low-fat cheese, • Beef and turkey jerky • Celery filled with cream cheese • Natural peanut butter on whole-grain bread
THE DIET EDIT
PRE-PACK SNACKS WARDS OFF TEMPTATIONS
COFFEE TO CURB THE HUNGER Coffee, either black or with heavy cream or melted butter, can take the edge off of hunger until you make it to a place with better food. So hang on in there one cup at a time!
HOTEL ROOM HACK When reserving a room at a major hotel, ask for your mini-fridge to be stocked for a diabetic. This is a frequent request, and most hotels oblige by swapping out high-sugar junk foods for milk, cheese, vegetables, diet soda, and fruit.
CONQUER EVERY RESTAURANT MENU
Eating out with confidence is a key part of success when traveling and if you train your mind and up your willpower so to keep to these rules, then dining out will not mean breaking your healthy eating regime.
RESTAURANT WILLPOWER:
• Say no to bread • Ask for double veggies instead of the starch with your main course • Choose olive oil and vinegar for your salad • Ask for butter to melt on your cooked vegetables and protein • Skip dessert, or choose a cheese plate or berries with heavy cream • Drink water throughout

6 Ways to Maintain Your Mental Flexibility BEHAVIOR EXPERT MEGAN COATLEY GETS CANDID ON MENTAL FLEXIBILITY AND BREAKS IT DOWN ON HOW TO PRACTICE IT.
W
hen you first start making room for healthy habits in your busy life, being a stickler can be beneficial – setting a workout schedule, planning your meals in advance, saying no to things that get in the way of your goals. Without giving yourself some rules – and being a little inflexible at the beginning – you’ll be likely to fall off the wagon much more quickly. But as you build your habits, you’ll eventually discover that things don’t always go according to your plan. There will undoubtedly be road bumps (an unexpectedly long work day), detours (your favourite body sculpting class gets cancelled) and setbacks (birthday

cake!). If you rigidly follow your plan instead of being a little flexible once in a while, you could do more harm than good.
schedules and perfect plans, it may be time to loosen up and become more flexible. Here’s how:
Experts in behavior science view mental flexibility not as a personality trait or a state of mind, but as a set of behaviors that can be changed. Everyone is flexible about some things and inflexible about others. When you think about flexibility as “something I do” and not “who I am,” you will start to realize that you can make lasting, positive changes that may open up opportunities for some relaxation, laughter and joy amid the daily grind. If you feel like you’ve become a bit of a stickler about strict
People often talk about Type-A characteristics as if they are inherent personality traits. But most people didn’t become inflexible and perfectionistic overnight. There have probably been many times in your past when your perfectionism paid off: You led study groups (complete with mock quizzes) for your middle school friends. You hosted an impromptu bachelorette party for a girlfriend when the maid of honor’s venue fell through. You volunteered for your kindergartener’s
1. Accept Your Behavioral History
2. Identify Places Where You Can Compromise
Perhaps you’re always the first to speak your mind in important meetings or you have a habit of jumping to point out grammatical errors in company communications. Maybe you’re “that parent” on the field, making playbook suggestions to your child’s soccer coach while the other parents simply cheer from the bleachers. None of these habits are inherently wrong in and of themselves, but there’s a fine line between being assertive and being domineering. In order become more flexible, it helps to first recognize and record situations where you most frequently try to steer the ship. Observing your own inflexible behavior lets you notice those situations where you could sometimes stand back a bit and let others take the lead. At this point, you’re not trying to change your behavior; you’re simply becoming aware of the points in your day where you could opt to be less rigid. Jot down these situations for future reference.
bathroom counter a mess. If you’re the one that always makes the weekly date night plans, let your hubby know that you’re leaving this week’s reservations up to him. Each time you stretch and try a new way of interacting with your environment, you become more flexible and it becomes easier to let go. Again, as it is in yoga, so it can be in life!
4. Set Small Goals for Mental Stretching
Once you’ve spent some time observing and tracking your inflexible behaviors and you’ve started to practice being flexible in certain situations throughout your day, the next step is to set small goals for mental stretching. Great runners set weekly mileage goals when they’re training for a marathon. Successful dieters set reasonable targets for steady weight loss each week. If you want to keep up your motivation and see change quickly, choose how many times you’ll be flexible throughout your day or week, write down your goal and post it where you can see it.
In yoga, if you want to really get a good stretch and build strength, you’ve got to come to class regularly and practice your postures, continuously pushing yourself a little further. Similarly, if you want to maintain a mellow attitude, you’ve got to practice stretching beyond the normal limits of your mental flexibility. For example, if you’re constantly cleaning up the kitchen and bathroom before you leave for work, you can practice your flexibility a few mornings a week by leaving the breakfast dishes in the sink and the
During this transition, you can make use of some extra incentives to keep you motivated to mellow out. Do you like back massages, nights at the theater, and bouquets of fresh cut flowers? Well, here’s your chance to have them all! Using the goals you’ve set for your mental stretching, build in rewards like these for sticking to your program each week. If you let a co-worker field those nonessential group emails today, give yourself a pat on the back and a piece of dark chocolate. If you chose to sit silently in the passenger’s seat instead of navigating aloud each time your daughter was at the wheel this week, get your nails done over the weekend. Adding in incentives will help you start to rewrite your own behavioral history. You’ll be earning the things you like for being flexible instead of being perfect. You can use rewards to grow your flexibility until going with the flow starts to become a more natural reaction. And, the best part is you can come back to this strategy whenever you notice yourself slipping into those stale, old patterns of rigidity.
6. Learn that Failure is Functional
3. Practice Flexible Actions
You know that practicing yoga, stretching after workouts and getting regular massages can all help your body become more flexible. Of course, we’re not talking about physical flexibility in this instance, but many of the same philosophies apply to your mental behaviors.
emails, etc.) aren’t being done to your exacting standards.
How will you know whether your habits are really improving? Make sure to track your practice. Jot it down in your planner. Text or email yourself a quick note. Make a chart and stick it on the fridge (after all, you love charts!). As you see your behaviors moving toward that goal line each week, you’ll know that you’re moving toward a lasting change.
5. Reward Your Choice to Retreat
Because patterns of inflexible behavior develop over long periods of time, changing them is a big challenge. For a while, you’re likely to feel uncomfortable practicing your flexibility in everyday situations. It will be tough to bite your tongue when things (like laundry, planning, creating employee schedules, packing lunches, following up on
Becoming more flexible is a great wellness goal, especially for busy women, wives and moms, who often shoulder a heavy load. It takes time to learn to let go and to share some of your burdens with others. As you attempt more flexible actions each day, notice some of the stress being lifted from your life. Sure, there will be days when that pesky perfectionism bug comes back to sting you. Perhaps you’ll fall back into control while preparing an important work project or planning a family vacation. When you fail to be flexible, you can come to realize your most menacing triggers. The next time you’re faced with a similar situation, you can try to manipulate the circumstances in your favor (e.g., ask for extra time on big projects or recruit someone to help make travel plans). Just remember that falling into inflexible habits for a little while is OK, because now you’ve got the strategies to go back and stretch those mental muscles.

O
ften when we’re striving to reach our fitness goals, we plan to work as hard as we can for as long as possible. This is a strategy that has been used by many trainers and fitness enthusiasts all over the world and it makes perfect sense, the harder you work - the closer you get to your goals. However, with the modernday technology we have available to us, it’s possible to work hard in just the fraction of the time and still see visible and measurable results. One example of technological breakthroughs that compliment a training regime is Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS). I was first introduced to this fat-burning and muscle-building method when I

was training for my first marathon in South Africa. My trainer advised me to add EMS training to help improve my running times, especially on steep hills by strengthening and oxygenating my muscles. So I was delighted when I discovered that Diva Lounge Spa at the Royal Plaza Mall branch in Doha offers this state-of-the-art training. The 20min EMS workout is equivalent to a 90min of conventional training. Once you are wearing the technical clothing and the electrodes are connected to the electro fitness machine, the major muscles in the body are stimulated simultaneously. The electric pulses penetrate deep into the muscles while you do muscleactivating exercises. The technical suit is not very flattering, it’s a little bulky and creates the illusion of rolls as you can see in the photographs from my session. But lets face it - time during any workout is not our most attractive anyway. And if you know your results are going to be amazing, does it matter that your reflection during a private session in the Personal 20 studio is going to be bulky? I don’t think so.
of EMS, as well as the fact that it only takes up 20min of your day then you’re quite difficult to impress, but I still have more to share about EMS. The EMS devices are equipped with a special program that effectively treats the symptoms of cellulite. Yeah, that’s right, this machine has you covered from all angles. As some of you know, cellulite is developed by the weakening of connective tissue. As the fat cells accumulate between the skin and the muscle tissue, visible bulges appear mainly on the thighs, gluteus and abdomen. This tissue is stimulated at a lower pulse depth, which increases circulation and triggers the release of waste products from the problematic areas. Pairing this with the involuntarily increased muscle work and heightened metabolism, the energy consumption of cells and with proper diet, weight loss and body shaping can be achieved.
In the month that I have been using Diva Lounge’s EMS machine, I have noticed my overall training stamina has improved. And because I enjoy measurable statically data, I underwent a body analysis in the Personal 20 studio before commencing the training. I compared the results to the initial outcome and discovered a 2% improvement in my muscle density. I already have a lot of muscle in my body due to the amount of exercise I do, but a 2% increase with using the machine once a week for a month is quite significant. EMS training is suitable for people at any fitness level, whether you’re a professional athlete looking to improve your performance, a full-time mom working on your figure or a fitness enthusiast who already has a solid routine. The pulses are adjusted by your trainer during your session to match your personal threshold and you then workout at that threshold point to get maximum stimulation for your body. If you’re not already thrilled by the fat burning and muscle building capabilities ABOUT NTANDO: Ntando Stemmet is a South African entrepreneur and marketing specialist with a keen interest in fitness, health and sports. The Lowdown
If you seek a peaceful getaway with friends, family or just yourself, then with no doubt getting out of the city should be the vibe. Am I right? Let me tell you, you’re wrong. Oh, very wrong. QH team had the chance to sit back and relax for an entire weekend at the premises, the grandeur and the oh-so refined locations of Shangri-La Hotel Doha. Located in the midst of bustling business and cultural hub of West Bay, this hotel offers the gracious Asian charm for those who seek a luxury and contemporary stay. The hotel is nothing but welcoming, warm and with an exceptional service. And did we mention with an outstanding Wifi? I know, we will get into that later on.

LOCAL GETAWAY
Peek Into My Room
I mean seriously, what’s a stay without a majestic view to the vibrant area of West Bay, its skyscrapers, breathtaking and vibrant lights, and of course, a gorgeous morning to the Corniche’s cerulean body of water? Nothing beats such thing. Our room was anything but ordinary. The décor: chic, sleek, contemporary and yet, with a cosy vibe to it all. We had the fabulous opportunity to stay at one of their suites and boy was that opulent. Packed with amenities, a fantastic view to the city (yep, 39th floor) and a full access to its Horizon Club Lounge, we pretty much felt like kings and queens for the weekend.
Come Dine with Me
With a myriad of one-of-a-kind restaurants with fantastic menus and exceptional food, Shangri-La doesn’t disappoint one bit. For our first evening we had an a la carte dinner at Sridan where we had a taste to its sushi menu, soups and its delectable sandwiches. Our picks had to be the lentil soup, sushi bento box and its waffle dish for dessert. But if perhaps you’re craving an oriental, Chinese cuisine, then Shanghai Club is your spot. Now, the venue is offering a whole new menu with great options to choose from. And for those who desire a drink or two, they offer tasty drinks, too. So continuing with our super relaxing vibe, for breakfast and lunch we had a fabulous culinary experience at the Horizon Club Lounge. With a breathtaking view to the city (duh!), brekkie was served well. We opted for some benedict eggs and salmon, fruits, and fresh orange juice. And if that isn’t your thing, they also offer a buffet. So seriously, there is no excuse to not eat. But the cool thing about the Horizon Club Lounge is its personalised services and exclusive privileges, such as their evening cocktails and canapés, beverages serving all day long, daily breakfast, and much more.
Extra Touches
The hotel is fully packed with great facilities and one of them was its spa: CHI, The Spa. The place oozes elegance, mystery, and a sanctuary for tranquility. No, we’re not joking. We opted for the Ku Nye 60min massage that relaxes your muscles and it provides an And for the shopping lovers, the hotel is also connected via the all-body massage. second floor to City Center Mall if you wish to spend some extra cash at your favourite stores, cinema or restaurants. But for those who probably are not fans of spas and are more into With that being said, we are eager and excited to see what pool days, the hotel also offers a spacious, clean, and a modern Shangri-La Hotel has to offer in the upcoming months as newly pool area. With a large pool and a myriad of tanning beds, we appointed General Manager Ben Bousnina, is now at the helm of spent our last few hours tanning by the pool. And as no surprise, such property. being the tech savvy’s that we are and always in constant email check, we must give it up to the hotel for its wonderful Wifi service. And let us tell you, it was a struggle to go back to reality after a We did not lose connection, not one bit, not even in the pool area. spectacular and one-of-a-kind service.

WANDERLUST DINING
Soul Food, So Good
FORGET ALL THE GLITZ AND GLAM OF DOWNTOWN NY RESTAURANTS, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOME REAL HEARTY FOOD WITH A GENEROUS HELPING OF CULTURE, THEN SYLVIA’S SOUL FOOD IN HARLEM IS – AS THEY SAY –THE JOINT!

WANDERLUST DINING
The Lowdown
Situated in the vibrant town of Harlem, Sylvia’s Soul Food, which opened its doors in 1962, is steeped in history and the restaurant has become a worldly popular. Founded by Sylvia Wood, who came to be known as “The Queen of Soul Food”, for over 55 years Sylvia’s has been serving authentic soul food and this icon remains a culinary must-visit for foodies.
The Menu
Sylvia’s Soul Food is considered as a “true icon of Harlem”, with its menu which not only warms the stomachs of its customers, but more so their hearts with the generous helpings of Southern classics such as ‘Home Style Fried Chicken with Collard Greens’ and ‘Garlic Mashed Potatoes’. The chicken can only be described as crispy and juicy, where you can literally hear the skin crunch in your mouth. Ugh, so good. The complementary cornbread served is an added pleasant surprise and the taste and texture could quiet frankly be a meal in its own. Other notable must-haves on the menu are the chicken liver and wings appetizers, which are absolutely delicious; the wings are tender and sweet, and the flavor of the liver gravy is well seasoned to perfection. Next up is the ‘Chicken & Waffles’ which does not be disappointed, and the Mac and Cheese. Mac and Cheese. Mac and Cheese. Mac and Cheese – yep, you need that in on your plate too!
The Roundup
The food, simply put, is incredibly satisfying. It’s loud, it’s low-key, and there’s always a lot of action to take in. The wait time is quite long and service is known to be slow and not overly attentive, however, this is made up for with the friendly, happy employees. And don’t forget that if the likes of Obama, Bill Clinton, Busta Rhymes and Nelson Mandela have pulled up a chair in this homely restaurant, then that is surely the overall seal of approval!
