FILM IN FOCUS
OCEAN’S 8, THE LONG AWAITED SPINOFF THIS COMEDY SPINOFF FROM THE OCEAN’S TRILOGY IS A MUST-SEE FOR ANYONE WITH A SENSE OF FUN WHO ENJOYS AN ADVENTURE AND WANTS TO BE ENTERTAINED WITH SOME SPARKLY NAUGHTINESS.
D
ebbie Ocean, the criminal mastermind (or should we say mistressmind?) is planning a theft – on a very grand style. The pre-planning stage has lasted for precisely five years, eight months and twelve days – because that was the length of time she was incarcerated in prison. While she was locked away, she should have been reflecting on her previous bad behaviour and making plans to live a life on the right side of the law – but oh no, she’s spent her time planning the biggest heist of her life. Debbie Ocean claims that she just wants to get out and start of new life – but this new life won’t be her turning over a new leaf but instead she plans to become rich and successful – in her own, very wicked way.
But first Debbie Ocean (played by Sandra Bullock) needs to recruit her gang. So there’s Lou, her right hand and partner in crime, played by Cate Blanchett; together they set out to recruit their team: Amita, played by Mindy Kaling and Tammy, a suburban mom – played by Sarah Paulson. They are joined by rapper and comedienne Awkwafina who plays Constance, a thief; Rihanna, who plays Nine Ball, a technical genius and Helen Bonham-Carter who plays Carter Rose, a fashion designer. The team has to have the best people because this is planned to be the heist of the century! Daphne Kluger, a celebrity, played by Anne Hathaway, is the target. She’ll be at New York City’s star studded annual Met Gala. She’ll be wearing a necklace worth $150million.
Oh we know it’s wrong. It’s very wrong. But we know it’s fiction so let’s relish this pure escapism and enjoy their daring adventure. They’re baddies but adorable baddies! It’s pure escapism with this caper from our favourite stars. Whether or not you have seen the 2001 movie Ocean’s 11 – or Ocean’s 12 in 2004 – or Ocean’s 13 in 2007, you really musn’t miss this one! From Warner Bros and Village Roadshow, produced by Steven Soderbergh, directed by Gary Ross who wrote the screen version with Olivia Milch from a story he had written before, it was filmed on Staten Island and in New York City.
Director: Gary Ross | Genre: Action, Crime, Comedy | Cast: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar 7th June | QH Fun Fact: Matt Damon and Carl Reiner are the only cast members from the “Ocean’s Eleven” films to appear in the “Ocean’s Eight” spin-off.

fter winning his sixth individual award of the season, along with the hearts of football lovers the world over, we just had to ask the question: Why is everyone talking about Mo Salah? We may not be avid football fans, but even the layman has heard about this Egyptian that has been killing it on British soil. It appears the player has been on a winning streak like no other. Ever since he hit the field with Liverpool the very first time, the chants “ Mo Salah-la la la” have filled every stadium he enters. Mo Salah’s extraordinary performance
on the field has certainly won him the full support and love of Liverpool fans, but the appreciation doesn’t stop there. The player has earned respect and support worldwide, and especially from the Middle East!
well as Liverpool player of the week. It would appear that the Egyptian player’s routine of praying after every goal he scores has worked, considering he took Liverpool to Champions League final for the first time since 2009.
Let’s talk facts here, his merits do speak for themselves. Mo Salah boasts SIX individual awards in his short time with the team. He has won the Golden Boot in the premier league for 32 goals. Speaking of goals; the player scored 32 goals in the prem and 43 for the whole season! He has set a new premier league record. Mo won tons of premier league player of the month as
Well, this all has definitely earnt him support. So much so that it was reported that 1 million people in Egypt voted for him for presidency despite him not even being on the ballot! “It was always on my mind to perform the best I can,” he told easports.com, and we think everyone can agree he delivered.

TECH SAVVY
Huawei P20: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue RESIDENT CONTRIBUTOR AND TECH SAVVY HASSAN SARAYA, DELVES ON HUAWEI’S NEW DESIGNS. FIND OUT HIS THOUGHTS AND REPORT.
T
he Chinese telecommunication company, Huawei, announced earlier this year the P20 & P20 Pro with a refreshed design, pumped up specs and brand new camera sensors. This has been an ambitious move towards earning their share into the Smartphone industry. However, does it stand a chance among the current market leaders? Well, Huawei is betting on the future with a refreshed design, a new gradient colour and a third camera on the P20 Pro. And yet, are we ready for a third camera? The P20 series supersedes 2017’s P10 series with a brand new front. It might look familiar given the notch on top of the screen. However, Huawei P20 & P20 Pro’s notch is smaller than the Apple’s iPhone X. While it lacks the technology packed on the iPhone X’s true depth camera system, it makes it up with a 24MP front facing camera for better selfies and a capability of 720P video recording. Both models kept the home bottom/fingerprint sensor as also found on the P10 series. The top part of the screen looks futuristic, however, the bottom part looks obsolete. And yet, when flipping the phone we can find a nice surprise with a new camera alignment and Huawei’s name written in a landscape mode with brand-new colours. While the champagne gold colour remains exclusive for P20, both models come in Midnight Blue, Black and
the colour of the hour Twilight: A gradient colour finish that varies between green, purple and blue; additionally, Pink Gold is also a gradient colour being featured. Internally, both models received a pretty sweet upgrade starting with IP67 certification that grants you dust and water resistance up to 1m for 30 mins. Battery performance has been enhanced with 3400 mAH battery on P20, and 4000 mAH battery on P20 Pro with a smart battery saving mode on both models for a longer battery life. But then, both models no longer support 3.5 mm audio jack, only a USB C port, so say hello to the wireless future with Huawei. But the main star of the show is its cameras. While the P20 model features a 12 MP camera, in addition to a 20 MP monochrome camera, the P20 Pro boosts a 40MP camera with the same 20MP monochrome camera, and a third 8MP camera with 3x optical zoom. All cameras have an optical image stabilization, which ensures a steady video shooting. Yet, you won’t rely on both models for video shooting as it supports 4K videos with 30 fps while both iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 support 60fps. The cameras system is enhanced with AI to identify the scene and the objects in it to provide with the best colours possible. Last but not least, both models support super slow mode with 720P with 960FPS as seen on Samsung Galaxy S9 and Sony Xperia XZ.
So, what does Huawei’s P20 series and weddings have in common? Something old (Home button/Fingerprint sensor), something new (3 cameras), something borrowed (The notch), something blue (The new Twilight colour).

GEMOLOGUE,
The Queen of All Things Jewellery
LIZA URLA TOOK INSTAGRAM BY STORM WITH HER WHIMSICAL IMAGES AND BLOG, GEMOLOGUE, FEATURING THE WORLD’S MOST SOUGH-AFTER JEWELLERY. NOW, THE WINNER OF BEST BLOG IN THE FASHION CATEGORY AT THE UK BEST BLOG AWARDS 2017 IS LAUNCHING A BOOK TITLED ‘GEMOLOGUE: STREET JEWELLERY STYLES & STYLING TIPS.’ QH GETS THE INSIDE SCOOP WITH THE INTERNET’S SENSATION.
How did you get into gemology?
I developed my love for precious stones during my gemology degree in NYC GIA, and it gradually turned into an allconsuming jewellery passion. Having access to the rarest pieces in the world such as 92-carat heart-shaped diamond and high jewellery collections by Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Boucheron, Dior, Chanel, Bulgari - as well as being a jewellery nomad discovering tribal jewellery around the world feeds my
20
ongoing passion for jewellery. It is a commitment and a journey at the same time.
Your IG account is so clean and fabulous with amazing tips on how to style jewellery, any advice for aspiring bloggers that wish to pursue the same goal?
Through @GEMOLOGUE I seek out the best jewellery the world has to offer, as well as sharing my authentic first-hand
experience with my followers. For fellow bloggers I would recommend to pick a subject they are passionate about and to develop in-depth knowledge about it. I would recommend keeping the blog and social media true to yourself. My Instagram account and GEMOLOGUE. com are about my individual journey through the vast and dazzling world of jewellery, so I hand-pick all the brands I collaborate with. I make sure I create high quality content through creative
FASHION TALK
styling and professional photoshoots.
Now with a street style book dedicated to jewellery, how did that project come about?
Following the completion of my GIA gemology degree in NYC, I launched GEMOLOGUE in 2009. Back then, jewellery designers did not allow to photograph their pieces as the digital world was still unchartered territories for them. In a way GEMOLOGUE started as a beautiful anthology of jewellery street style images, as I could not photograph jewellery brands directly. Consequently, I started sharing my love for jewellery with street style, often featuring jewelry worn at events during festive seasons across the globe. GEMOLOGUE Jewellery Street style is a unique book, because it is the only book in the world right now solely about jewellery street style.
Can you give us a sneak peek of what we can find in your book?
My new book, Gemologue: Street Jewellery Styles & Styling Tips, features eye-catching and inspirational photographs, showcasing costume, tribal as well as fine jewellery. The book combines street-style photographs with my signature styling creations in the fashion context.
Your knowledge in gems is so wide, what has been your favourite piece you’ve ever featured/worn?
The dazzling 15-carat Oppenheimer Blue diamond I had the privilege to try on in London before it got sold for £45 million.
How would you describe your jewellery style? My taste in jewellery is eclectic and I am in love with all types of jewellery, be it either fashion, vintage or fine. I mix
and match my jewellery all the time. My personal choice of precious metal is white gold. I like black costume jewellery at the moment. Constantly travelling around the world, I feel most comfortable in black and it reflects in my costume jewellery style. I also love statement earrings, such as my blue wool earrings by Katerina Makriyianni, and colourful, chunky jewellery by Iradj Moini. I combine those pieces with my Sevan Bicakci sculptural ring and several elegant minimalistic rings like my heart shaped diamond on a fishing line. I am always on a jewellery hunt to discover new designers and regularly visit jewellery related events and trade fairs. Up next are COUTURE in Las Vegas, Masterpiece in London and Paris Couture Week to preview High Jewellery collections.
Three tips on how to style jewellery?
First and foremost, do not forget to put your jewellery on! Keep it close at hand, in a visible place. Put necklaces on same hangers as matching dresses, and keep it next to your stack of makeup and perfumes. Jewellery is essential to add a finishing touch to your look, so do not leave your house without it. In addition, jewellery never fails to lift the spirits! Pick your everyday jewels that you can sleep and take a bath in. The brooch is the most over-looked piece of jewellery, so don’t be afraid to brooch it up! A brooch can add an instant touch of chic to your outfit. Collect jewellery on your travels. Pieces of jewellery make some of the best souvenirs, as well as supporting local craftsmen.
If you could trade your jewellery box/ closet with anyone, who would it be and why?
Without a doubt, I would love to trade my jewellery box with Elizabeth Taylor who was known to possess some of the most spectacular jewels in the world! I was dazzled by her breathtaking jewellery collection that was previewed at Christie’s a while back.
Can we expect a jewellery line from Liza anytime in the future?
I am considering a few exciting collaborations with jewellery designers worldwide. I just became the face of Silvia Furmanovich Fine Jewellery Botanica collection. Silvia Furmanovich is one of the most exciting Brazilian jewellery designers, known for her exquisite pieces made using marquetry technique. By wearing her jewellery I feel Silvia’s admiration of the nature and her commitment to capturing its beauty through craftsmanship. You will find her breathtaking collection in the Middle East via Azza Fine Jewellery.
And last but not least, your favourite stone/gem and why?
During my gemology days in NYC, red and pink diamonds kept me awake at night. My favourite is sapphire as I am absolutely obsessed with blue. I have always been fascinated by Paraiba Tourmalines because I associate that precious stone with distinct blue colour of water in the Maldives. I have a weakness for Alexandrite as I am Russian and this stone has a special allure for me.

e don’t know about you, but we cannot get enough of Ramadan tents. If it were up to us, we’d hit a new one every day of the week. With so many on the market it can be hard to keep up with the best of the best. We hit City Centre Rotana Doha’s Almas Ramadan Tent to see what’s in store…
What really sends it home is the Suhoor offered at the tent. We got to delve deep into some cold arabic mezze specially curated by the chefs. Hot mezze is also served for guests on every table, including some delectable classics such as Soujouk and Grilled Halloumi cheese. The Potato harra salad was our personal favourite!
Let’s start at the breaking of a fast: the iftar buffer. The Iftar offered at Almas Ramadan Tent includes a wide selection of oriental cuisine with some Western accents. You can expect to find your traditional Arabic Ramadan treats and sweets along with some exciting live cooking stations. The Ramadan atmosphere is definitely on point at Almas with a fun lively and traditional-feel.
The fun doesn’t end there. The Suhour feast comes with its own set of multiple live stations such as the station dedicated entirely to Foul Mdammes offering traditional variations of foul. They even offer a unique live saj bread station that specializes in serving famous saj bread with diverse toppings and fillings like labneh, zatar, olive oil, halloumi cheese, muhammara, cucumber and so much more.

an ode to the beautiful month we are all celebrating. As our evening progressed we couldn’t resist, but to enjoy some great and delectable main dishes. We first gave their chicken beryani a try, with so much flavour, our palate was taken to a whole new level. Truly a palate parade. We also gave their falafel a try (one of our favourites), and we couldn’t resist some sushi – fresh and just perfect to taste. As we enjoyed our meal, the staff was very attentive and they do offer Ramadan juices to go along with your meal if you prefer to go traditional. Also, not to mention, the hotel offers an exceptional live entertainment with Arabic tunes, that made the atmosphere a jolly and vivid one. If you haven’t been lucky enough to try and visit an Iftar or Suhoor, then make

ith the World Cup ahead of us, Doha is gearing up for such eventful dates. And Champions located at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel is no stranger to games, fun evenings, casual atmosphere, and of course, football. And because we’re here to give you the latest and the nitty-gritty of what’s happening in the city, we visited the famous bar to check what they have in stores for the football lovers during this summer. For as long as we can remember, Champions sports bar has been the go-to hotspot for all things sports (obviously) and for its fun games such as quiz night with exceptional prizes, and their delicious food. And now, the sports venue is bringing more fun to the mix with their 42 exclusive dishes only available for the season, each an ode to a country participating in the World Cup. Chef Oliver and Chef Nicholas gave QH team a sneak peek of some of their delectable dishes, so we first kicked the evening with a crispy calamari for the Australian front, and with some Egyptian goulash. We also tasted the frikadellen part of the German team, pinchos with chimichurri for the Argentinean crowd and for the Peruvian front, we devoured some papas a la huancaina. The concept is simple, and the food beyond delicious. Every day during the World Cup, dishes will be available depending upon which countries are competing. These nations won’t just be battling it out on the field, they’ll also be competing for a spot in your stomach. The dishes are all structured in an easy-to-eat and comfort-food bar manner, while the flavours are anything but basic. Your palate will certainly be enticed by the fiery Peruvian dip served with some potato wedges or the chimichurri sauce served with the Argentinean beef skewers – it truly is an explosion of flavours! But that’s not all, Champions will be fully quipped to enjoy to the max your favourite team with over 47 LCD and two giant screens from June 14 until July 15. Whatever team you’ll be rooting for, we are sure the fun will double at Champions.

Enjoying a soft breeze dining by the sea and under the stars, guests flock to Al Nahham restaurant to delight in the mouth-watering mezze from around the region, including sensational seafood and mixed grill.
What are the most important ingredients in authentic Middle Eastern cooking?
While there are many ingredients that make up the Middle Eastern kitchen, there are the few that are reoccurring and very much a stable. Such as the use of a lot of garlic is common as well as za’atar, which can be found in mezzas along with a lot of olive oil. As an accompaniment, Lebneh yogurt is a very popular side dish.
Which dish(es) would you personally recommend from your menu? As a means of complimenting the island feel here, I would be recommending to diners to try the seafood selection. Especially in the summer months the Zarzeer and prawn salad is very refreshing and a great place to start.
You were trained by a French chef in a 5* restaurant – are there many similarities between French and Middle Eastern cooking?
follow strict scripts. The kitchen is the real experience and working along side teammates all coming together to create interesting dishes.
There are more differences than there are similarities. French cuisine tends to be rich in cream and butter and Middle Eastern dishes lean more towards a lot of oils. For the similarities, both cuisines do tend to use ingredients such as garlic and lemon.
You have said that the taste of your cuisine will be a lasting memory – a souvenir to take away – how long do you believe that souvenir can last?
What’s the most exciting for you: being in the TV studio or being in the kitchen? Being in the kitchen is the most exciting; it’s my comfort zone and a place where I feel relaxed. You are permitted to really experiment in the kitchen compared to that of TV kitchen, as you have to

The view from the restaurant is wonderful – which do you prefer, the daytime view or the night time view? Nothing can beat the views at night. The Doha skyline which pans across the airport and over to West Bay is breathtaking with all the lights. This is the best spot to come and truly appreciate Doha City from.
Al Nahland Restaurant offers lavish service – how essential it this in addition to the cuisine?
It is all about the attention to detail and the top class service offered by our team. ACTIVE MIND
#THEFEARPROJECT CHARTERED PSYCHOLOGIST AND CONSULTANT MARTYN STEWART, DELVES ON THE WORD ‘FEAR.’
There are only a few things that transcend culture, ethnicity, gender or religion. Fear is one of those things! An emotion designed to keep us safe in the face of physical danger; we’ve all been scared enough times to recognise the racing heartbeat and ‘butterflies’ in the stomach. But why do we get ‘scared’ when there’s no actual danger? Making a mistake or speaking on stage shouldn’t make us fidget awkwardly, yet many of us still react like a deer in the headlights when it happens. But it’s all in our head…and we know it!
56
We act like we’re in full control of our minds, but that idea is so far from the truth, it might as well come from Jupiter. Every day, psychological fear stalks us relentlessly. We’ve become experts at hiding in plain sight, camouflaging ourselves in a world of distractions to escape. We succumb to the seduction of superficial social approval and second-hand gossip; anything to divert eyes from ourselves and avoid the truth. However, none of this insulates us from our own irrational perceptions for too long… especially, if we continue to think on autopilot.
Sometimes, we have to admit we’re too comfortable doing nothing. It makes sense though. Humans are wired to make life as easy as possible! We want everything to go the way we want, hoping psychological fear will bother somebody else! Our natural mindset, isn’t cut out for making tough decisions. It’s no surprise we’re imprisoned by insecurities, secrets and past experiences we’d like to erase. We drag others along for the ride too, because misery loves company! What ‘scares’ you the most?
ACTIVE MIND “We’ve become experts at hiding in plain sight, camouflaging ourselves in a world of distractions to escape. We succumb to the seduction of superficial social approval and second-hand gossip; anything to divert eyes from ourselves and avoid the truth.”
A fear of failure, rejection, loneliness, judgement, being a disappointment to others, losing your looks or a life of shattered dreams? What about not fitting in, being a bad parent/child/partner/friend, feeling weak, trapped or making poor decisions? Perhaps the realisation that you wasted so much time and achieved nothing creates anxiety of being a ‘nobody’. Although, none of these ‘fears’ directly produce any physical danger, the automaticity of our thoughts spins fabrication so convincingly, we paralyse our own action. It’s time to stop strangling the very thoughts that can liberate our minds with an elaborate web of reconstructed memories and selfish perspectives! Our view of the world will always feel real. However, that doesn’t necessarily make them accurate. Failing exams, being laughed at or a lack of popularity on social media is
unlikely to result in physical danger. Nevertheless, we’re primed and conditioned to play these social games of value where the cost is our self-esteem. Even against our better judgment, we’re mentally threatened with isolation and ridicule if we step out of line. We’ve never been taught how to confront the unspoken negativity that plagues education, workplaces, relationships, family, social circles and society in general…so, we have to do it ourselves! We all hide behind something. The most attractive behind looks; the talented behind ability; the hard workers behind effort; the popular behind social circles; the down and out behind woes; the rich behind money; the powerful behind reputation. The comedians behind humour and wit. However, in the grand scheme of things, they’re all illusions that once
exposed, reveals our minds as that of a neglected child. The biggest truth is facing the lies we tell ourselves and there are no short cuts... Whether you’ve been the target of cruel jokes all your life or you’ve allowed pressure and expectation to crush you, now is the time… You must break yourself to create yourself!

MILITARY MOVES
NTANDO STEMMET JOINS A NEW WAY OF FITNESS: A GRUELING AND RIGOROUS ONE. FIND OUT MORE AS SHE SHARES HER EXPERIENCE.
T
here’s no denying that soldiers and the special forces are some of the fittest people on earth. More so than some elite athletes. When there is a possibility of being engaged in hand-to-hand combat or being required to travel on foot for days to find safety, you’re not going to risk your fitness levels being sub-par, because your strength and endurance might end up saving your life or the life of a fellow soldier. Now imagine the grueling levels of body condition, cardio and strength training that men and women in the military have to undergo. That was my experience this month at the Military Fitness training facility in West Bay. It began with a bomb, a grenade to
58
“At some point I shed an involuntary tear because the soldiers are relentless and they don’t allow you to slack off or perform below your body’s capabilities.”
be specific; all Military Fitness training is done by actual soldiers, and not just fitness instructors. Their approach is to train you as if your life depended on it. Sometimes it does. I know family members who were told by doctors that if they didn’t lose weight and make life changing health decisions, their
lives would be cut short due to various health conditions. The Grenade workout is held on weekends from Friday to Saturday. And it’s nothing short of explosive. You must know by now that I enjoy cardio and am only now beginning to warm up to strength and endurance training. The combination of
ACTIVE BODY
the two plus a bonus grenade explosion during your workout is a total thrill. You never know which side it’s going to come from, it gives you a similar pensive anticipation that real soldiers must feel on the battle field, because you never know which side the enemy is going to strike. Ok not quite the same because your life isn’t in danger - but it’s interesting to imagine. The Battle Room sessions, which include high intensity cardio as well as strength training are a signature workout at Military Fitness. This workout had me pumping muscles, burning calories and really feeling the intensity of my workout and every muscle I was sculpting in the process. At some point I shed an involuntary tear because the soldiers are relentless and they don’t allow you to slack off or perform below your body’s capabilities. I kept picturing my goal chart (yeah, I have a body goals chart) and visualising myself ticking off milestones from my chart and it made the torture I was subjecting my body to worth it. There’s just something about jumping over a wooden block into a squat position and hurling a massive rubber tyre across the room that made me feel like a badass, ready for battle. Other sessions at Military Fitness include Ab-Domination, which strengthens your core and Switch-Fire which will have you boxing, jumping and contorting yourself into all sorts of positions as if you’re actually on fire, wait - maybe you are on fire! R.I.O.T is the incredible outdoor class where you run until you’re on autopilot and are no longer in control of your legs or even your lungs. Needless to say, it’s my absolute favourite of the workouts. It takes place in the scenic Sheraton Park. The view of the skyline and the lovely fountains in the park are a welcome distraction from the endless pain the soldiers are inflicting on you. Training like a soldier is a very unique experience, that GI-Jane “savethe-world” mentality stays with you the entire day. We could all do with a little of that.

WHAT TO EAT AFTER YOU WORKOUT
FITNESS EXPERT DEAN ANDERSON GIVES US THE SCOOP WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY AFTER A WORKOUT. FIND OUT ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR A FANTASTIC AND HEALTHY POST-WORKOUT MEAL TO GET RESULTS.
Everyone knows that athletes must plan and time their meals and snacks very carefully to reach their performance goals. But what about the rest of us? You try to squeeze in 30-60 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Do you have to be careful about what you eat before and after your workouts, too?
60
If you’re eating a healthy diet and getting enough calories to support your activity level, you can probably rely on your own appetite, energy levels and experience to tell you whether you need to eat anything before or after exercise and what it should be. The basic rule here is: Find out what works best for you, and do that.
There are some advantages to knowing how your body works and what it needs to perform at its best. The bottom line for healthy weight loss and fitness sounds simple: You have to eat fewer calories than you use up—but not fewer than your body needs to function at its best.
HEALTH FEATURE
Your Post-Exercise Fluid Needs
Most moderate exercisers will lose about one quart (four cups) of fluid per hour of exercise, so try to drink about 1620 ounces of water shortly after your workout to aid the recovery process. If you sweat a lot or the weather is hot and/or humid, consider weighing yourself before and after exercise, and drinking an ounce of water for every ounce of weight you’ve lost. Because heavy sweating also causes loss of minerals and electrolytes, consider using a sports drink with electrolytes if you need to replace more than two or three cups of fluid.
Your Post-Exercise Meal or Snack
As long as you’re staying within your overall range for the day, you don’t need to be obsessive about matching the following calorie and nutrient ratios perfectly. Just be careful not to fall into the very common trap of thinking that it’s okay to eat anything and everything in sight because you just worked out. Many people are very hungry after a workout, making it easy to eat more than you really need or to choose foods that won’t really help your body. Eating too much of the wrong thing can cause your body to store that food as fat instead of using your post-workout meal to refuel and repair your muscles.
So, What Does the Ideal Meal or Snack Look Like? •
Calories: Ideally, try to eat enough calories to equal 50 percent of what you burned during your workout. So if you burn about 600 calories, try to eat 300 calories after exercise.
•
Carbohydrates: If you have some favourite high-carb foods that are lacking the whole grains and fiber that are often recommended as part of a healthy diet, this is a good time to have them. Your body can digest refined carbohydrates faster during your “refueling window,” but if you prefer whole foods, don’t force yourself to eat processed foods.
•
Protein: While carbs are essential, it’s also important to include some high-quality protein in your post-workout meal or snack. This protein will stop your body from breaking down muscle tissue for energy and initiate the process of rebuilding and repairing your muscles. About 25 percent of the calories you eat after a workout should come from protein—that’s about 1015 grams for most people
•
Fat: Fat doesn’t play a big role in post-workout recovery, and eating too much fat after a workout won’t help your weight control or fitness endeavors. Only 15 percent (or less) of your post-workout calories should come from fat
mind Keep in
The ideal time to eat after a workout is within 30 minutes to two hours, when your body is ready and waiting to top off its fuel tanks to prepare for your next session. Visit: www.sparkspeople.com for more information

Trash to Treasure The Art of Recycling
KIM WYATT SITS DOWN WITH SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST, SWAPNA NAMBOODIRI FOR AN INSIDE SCOOP ON HER LOVE FOR ART AND RECYCLING.
S
elf-taught artist, Swapna Namboodiri, loves collecting trash. The former engineer transforms discarded plastic into stunning pieces of sculptural collages and artworks. Since 2016, Swapna’s artworks have travelled to more than fifty collectors around the globe. Based in Qatar, the artist is passionate about sharing her message of recycling to the world.
1. How did you change career from engineer to full-time artist?
After five years of corporate life in Bangalore, India, I decided to take a break after I had my first child. Back then, painting was only a hobby. In 2012 I exhibited at my first flea market and sold recycled plastic jewelry, home décor products and paintings. That
62
was the beginning of my recycling journey!
2. Do you see any parallels between engineering and art?
I strongly believe my engineering background and experience in the corporate field has contributed to the person I am today. Personally, I can’t say there are any
parallels but there is definitely scope for a collaboration between the two.
COMMUNITY I became an artist to pursue my passion and dream. My transformation from engineer to artist was not easy. In fact, for a while I was skeptical about calling myself an ‘artist’ because of my lack of formal education.
4. Why do you use trash for your art?
Initially I started using trash as an added texture for my art. Then I researched the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our planet and the impact on ocean life. I was inspired to use plastics as much as possible in my artworks and I hope this will inspire others to recycle and reduce the use of plastic.
5. What types of trash do you like to use?
I use all kinds of plastic bottles and bags! Each piece of artwork is individually hand cut and painted ready to be assembled onto canvas or joined using wire and/or mesh. Each piece of artwork uses between one to ten plastic bottles depending on the size of the artwork. I started using trash from my home and now my friends save plastic materials for me.
6. Describe your method and style of art
I love to call myself a recycling plastic sculptor because I am extremely passionate about helping to make our planet greener for future generations. I try to bring a unique style to each piece of artwork and incorporate
7. You’re active in the local art community. How did you become involved?
My family and I relocated to Qatar in 2014 and I fell in love with art scene. I was lucky enough to be part of a community of artists and crafters named QatART. I soon started exhibiting and selling my artworks to the local and expat audience. In late 2015 I joined a couple of online galleries where I connected with an art loving crowd from around the world! For a self-taught artist, it was a life changing experience and I felt motivated to explore and polish my skills.
8. Why is it important to recycle?
to think twice before throwing away plastics.
9. Is there a recycling scene in Qatar?
There seems to be an increasing number of schools taking part in ‘green’ initiatives and I hope that environmental awareness will spread amongst our younger generations. I’m so glad the local and expat communities are taking more responsibility for the environment.
10. Where do you exhibit your artworks?
Recently I was selected to exhibit my sculptural artworks at the Tokyo International Art Festival in Tokyo. It was my debut at an international art fair. For future projects I’m planning to exhibit my artworks here in Qatar by the end of the year.
11. What do you hope for your future? I don’t like to plan ahead! I’d rather live and enjoy the moment. When I started this journey seven years ago, I had no clue how life would turn out. I can’t believe I recently had the opportunity to exhibit my artwork in Tokyo at the Tokyo International Art Festival! I am passionate about my work and enjoy it so much. I’m very positive about my art career and can’t wait to explore, learn and create every single day!
I like to quote the following: “Each piece of plastic once created is still For more information about Swapna Namboodiri’s work lying on the earth’s please visit: surface.” If plastic www.facebook.com/abstarctbyswapna production and www.facebook.com/glassydreamz usage remain the www.instagram.com/swapna_namboodiri same our oceans www.artfinder.com/swapna-namboodiri will be filled with more plastic than fish by the year Kim Wyatt is a writer and journalist @ 2050. different painting techniques such as pourable fluid oils and acrylics. I love working on a range of subjects from nature and outer space to people and culture. If I had to choose one favourite subject matter it would be nature! I try to delve deeply into the soul of the work I am creating and use bright, bold colours to give a vibrant aura to all my artwork.
