City Beats On the sidelines of Qatar Foundation’s exhibition (on between November 12 and 30) of Palestine focused art pieces that captured a diverse range of artistic expressions exploring several themes that symbolise Palestinian identity, exhibitor Mouza Al Marri, a student from Virginia Commonwealth University, spoke to Aparajita Mukherjee on what led her to participate in this exhibition. She said, “I can say I’ve been raised with the Palestinian cause. Recent events have evoked intense emotions—anger, sadness, and shock—resulting in a feeling of paralysis. I've come to understand that the only way to navigate these emotions effectively is through artistic expression. Art becomes my avenue to articulate and navigate these profound feelings.” Al-Marri added that she believes that art can encapsulate and convey an entire message, reaching dormant hearts – a meaningful and civil way to effect change. “It's the least we can do as artists, and I dedicate this skill to doing good.”

Empowering education through WISE 11 summit The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) 11 Summit, held at the Qatar National Conventional Centre from November 28 to 29, 2023 marked a pivotal moment in addressing global education challenges. H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development, observed the event's inauguration. The ceremony was graced by HE Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, alongside numerous distinguished Ministers, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the state, and over 2,000 participants. These attendees represented diverse stakeholders in education, including thought leaders, policymakers, technology innovators, and young trailblazers. During her opening remarks, HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser said: "For more than 20 years we have supported education in Palestine, and especially in Gaza. We built the Al Fakhoora School as the first of many educational projects in Gaza. It has since been shelled by the Israeli Forces. The projects, which now constitute the Al Fakhoora programme include teaching and training, building schools and universities, and funding specific research projects that are not available elsewhere in the strip. They also provide psycho-social support to cope with the devastating reality of life in times of crisis in Gaza." HH Sheikha Moza connected the importance of education to the theme of the WISE Summit: artificial intelligence. She raised concerns about how AI could manipulate narratives and control information, posing questions about whose stories and histories would be preserved. Since its inception in 2009, the WISE Summit has been an unparalleled platform for empowering education through

Holistic journey to wellness, balance & wholesomeness In an exclusive tete a tete, Manu Prmar delves into the realm of spryness with Heinrich Morio, general manager of Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som. And Morio, armed with his diverse experience in the domain, shares his steering role in clients’ transformative journey at the resort, encapsulating a perfect mind-body balance.
Heinrich Morio, general manager of Zulal Wellness Resort 22 | QH | December 2023
xploring insights around the practised paradigm of health and wellness at Zulal Wellness Resort, Morio unveils the core philosophies and innovative strategies shaping the exceptional experience at Zulal. His journey began not with a departure from Bangkok but rather as a return, a homecoming to the heart of wellness in the Middle East. After two years in the bustling city, Morio found himself drawn back to the world of wellness and the echoes of his tenure in the region for over 15 years. Zulal, a beckoning opportunity, aligned seamlessly with his extensive experience, having led another acclaimed wellness sanctuary on the serene shores of Koh Samui. Morio speaks of Zulal's unique ethos, its philosophy standing steadfast on six pillars – fitness, physiotherapy, spa, holistic, aesthetics and nutrition – and each one of these pillars is incorporated into more than 14 tailormade retreat programmes to address ailments and concerns that are usually widespread. These include emotional and mental balance, weight loss, detoxification, stress and burnout, pain management, enhanced fitness, physiotherapy, beauty, relaxation, and much more.

Integrative approach Drawing from a tapestry intertwined with experiences in prestigious hotels across the globe, Morio's approach is coloured by the diversity of his journey. He has brought with him the wisdom and insight gleaned from luxurious properties, a wealth of knowledge now enriching the fabric of Zulal's wellness tapestry. However, it is the seamless integration of Traditional Arabic Islamic Medicine (TAIM) with modern therapies that has stood as Zulal's unique identity in the world of wellness. Morio's vision for Zulal was a sanctuary that transcended the boundaries of typical wellness retreats, embracing families of all ages in a mindful journey towards health and rejuvenation. In the fading light of the desert, Morio’s words linger, carrying with them the promise of an oasis, an enclave of wellness, where the mind, body, and spirit find solace amidst the tranquil dunes of Al Ruwais.
Tailor-made approach Morio’s eyes lit up as he spoke of Zulal's opulent yet profoundly intimate approach to luxury. Zulal Wellness Resort offers an extremely high-end personalised wellness experience that goes above and beyond the traditions of a luxury hotel brand. He described every element of guests’ experience tied in with their holistic approach to wellness, a foundation of local traditions and legendary Arabian hospitality, infused with a cosmopolitan outlook. Morio articulated that the result is unlike anything else – an oasis in the desert welcoming visitors from near and far, a home away from home where one leaves feeling like the best version of yourself. “Quite simply, Zulal Wellness Resort is a haven, harnessing the pure beauty and power of nature to revive the human mind, body and spirit,” he added.

Every guest’s journey commences with a personalised health consultation, a one-on-one discourse delving into individual wellness goals. His face glowed with enthusiasm as he shared Zulal’s latest innovation – genomic wellness which taps into the science of DNA to identify how individuals respond to different lifestyle factors such as body and weight, diet, eating behaviour, nutrition, metabolism, exercise and even stress. Delving deeper into the heart of Zulal’s philosophy, Morio voiced his vision for fostering a culture of well-being, extending not only to guests but also to the resort’s cherished employees. Beyond physical activities such as beach cleanups and monthly walking challenges, Morio mentioned Zulal’s commitment to nurturing well-being among staff by incorporating awareness talks conducted by health advisors on a variety of topics ranging from mental and emotional wellness. Under the vast star-studded sky, as the night’s embrace grows, the essence of Zulal lingers – a sanctuary in the sands where luxury transcends extravagance, with well-being woven into the very fabric of existence.

Reflections: The essence of learning to walk ready into the future
eflections allow us to consider the process of our own learning, it gives us the wherewithal to critically review something, build the pathway for the future, on the basis of personal or self-development. It is this process – not as seamless as the words look on this page – that completes our growth and, more importantly, impacts future outcomes on the back of better decisions that we make, taking lessons from what we’ve learnt from a failure, a setback or from plain and simple life itself. In this year-end issue, QH had a simple ask from corporate titans – a short write up on what 2023 has taught her/him as a business leader, lesson(s) that’ll help her/ him steer the company into 2024 and well beyond and how will she/he look back on this year when he is ruminating. And each of the corporate leaders – in diverse business sectors – hospitality, technology and telecom – came up with their own lessons, their own story in learning and what expectations they keep in this process of shaping up their respective journeys. Flip the pages to have a peek into what Qatar’s business leaders have for us! 28 | QH | December 2023
From the dawn of civilization, human beings have evolved and a critical mechanism that has aided this process of evolution is the process of reflection. What it does is: it allows us to time travel to certain events/ occurrences of the past and helps the mind to put together a toolkit to move forward – this time, in a better shape and form, packed as it is with the lessons. In this year-end issue QH peeks into corporate minds to understand what lessons 2023 taught them.

Regional diversification on the back of FIFA learnings echno Q's core business objectives revolve around both horizontal and vertical expansion. On a local level, we aim to broaden our product portfolio in alignment with the evolving business landscape. Additionally, we seek to grow our market presence by leveraging our 27 years of extensive experience in the Qatari market and leverage our learnings from FIFA World Cup 2022. In our pursuit of vertical expansion, Techno Q has recently extended its footprint into Saudi Arabia (chosen due to its status as the fastest-growing market in the GCC region and is not as saturated as the UAE) and Oman. Techno Q being the sole company with profound experience in audio visual and security systems for FIFA events and with Saudi Arabia set to host the World Cup in 2034, this would be an enormous opportunity for us to contribute significantly. On a personal mission note, my vision is to position Techno Q as the leading systems integrator in the GCC and we are dedicated to this goal. We acknowledge that there have been fluctuations in project availability in 2023, influenced by the World Cup project completion. Therefore, we recognise the need for diversification and agility by offering solutions that cater to the ever-changing market demands. As the majority of government infrastructure projects have been completed, we are now shifting our focus towards providing comprehensive support and maintenance services. Fortunately, we have been able to carry forward several projects from 2022 to 2023, and our contracts related to the World Cup extend until 2024. While there may be a slight dent in sales in 2023 compared to the previous year, we are excited about significant projects on the horizon, including the Formula One event, Hamad Medical Corporation initiatives, and other substantial opportunities. Our momentum remains strong, and we are optimistic about the future.

“Shape of letters inspire me” Speaking to Sara Naveed, calligrapher Youssef Challar speaks of his passion for the art, how digitalisation helps him and his teaching method.
Youssef Challar 34 | QH | December 2023
Talking To One of Challar’s calligraphic creations calligraphy for children: the first one addressing children between three and eight years of age and the second one from nine years and above. Later, I will publish other workbooks of the remaining scripts.
QH: What inspired your book, مشاعر الحروف (Feelings of Letters, in English) and how does it contribute to the appreciation of Arabic calligraphy? Challar: As a calligrapher, I live with the letters in all my
feelings, and I care about the details of each part of the letter, so if I write the letter “noon” I feel like I am riding the waves, and that inspiration comes from the shape of the letter, I feel the emotion coming from each letter, like they are expressing their feelings.
QH: How has the digital age impacted traditional art forms such as calligraphy, and what opportunities and challenges has it presented to artists like yourself? Challar: I look at the digital tools as any other handcraft tool.
Hence, just like any other tool that helps me expose my creativity, in an easy and brilliant way, I assume that digital tools will not only give us better results but we can use them to reach a very advanced level of creativity. Having said that, it is my view that an artist usually enjoys art the most when using the classic tool.
QH: What is the significance of the special honour you received from His Excellency Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Thani, and how has it influenced your work as a calligraphy expert? Challar: When you receive an honour that encourages you to
QH: Can you share your insights on the evolution of Arabic calligraphy during your 25-year journey, and how it has influenced your work? Challar: My passion started from childhood, I used to do my
handwriting homework carefully, in a beautiful way and often, my teacher used to take my notebook to show it to other teachers and students. At that time, I discovered that there are many types of scripts in Arabic, and I made a search in our library to find any book explaining that. Later, I found in an encyclopedia the different types of Arabic scripts with samples of how they look like, and henceforth, every time I tried to write using the same script and wrote my name at the end of the page: “The Calligrapher: Youssef Challar”, with an eye to the future, since I was barely seven at that time. After a few years my mother sent me to a professional calligrapher to start my official journey, as we have many types of scripts so it is not easy to master all of them in a short period of time. But I determined not to stop until I reach a high level of perfection in most of scripts, such as Thuluth, Naskh, Roqaa and Diwani. I am trying now to complete my methodology in teaching calligraphy, so I issued two workbooks for learning Arabic
give your best effort, especially when you do what you love, it is a good fillip. Speaking for myself, I try to do my best every day because it is my passion – my art gives me the energy every day to express my ideas and emotions.
QH: Could you explain your approach to teaching Arabic calligraphy and the importance of preserving this art form for future generations in Qatar and globally? Challar: I teach the Arabic calligraphy in a different and
creative way, so when I explain the letters, I separate the different parts of the letter to focus on each part as a separate shape, so the student can easily practise calligraphy as he already knows the exact letter shape and the specific angle of the letter.

Life Hack
Ensuring canine welfare through force-free dog training Dogs, our loyal companions, build lasting bonds through training. In Qatar, Jasmin Maier, a dedicated canine behaviourist, transforms countless lives with her extraordinary approach: force-free training, promoting well-behaved dogs without fear or harsh methods. By Shehar Bano Rizvi eet Jasmin Maier, who is passionate about dogs, so much so that made a career transition just to make a significant impact. In 2011, Maier made a changeover from a cushy job at a hotel to a certified dog trainer in Qatar, inspired as she was by her rescued dog, Sophie. Earning a rigorous German dog training licence and multiple other qualifications, Jasmin resolved Sophie's behavioural issues. As a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant (IAABC) and Pet Professional Guild member, Maier, dedicated to education, collaborates with global shelters, including Pawmise Rescue Qatar, positively impacting countless canine lives. "As the Middle East's sole Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant (CDBC), I have no onsite peers. This drives me to gain more knowledge to assist a broader spectrum of behaviour issues. So, alongside my canine companions, I frequently travel to attend in-person workshops worldwide, honing our skills in tackling aggression, fear, anxiety, stress, and enhancing our expertise in service and therapy dog training," says Maier.
Charlie – Qatar’s first therapy dog
Jasmin Maier, canine behaviourist 48 | QH | December 2023
Maier’s first therapy dog was Charlie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who was originally rehomed due to behavioural issues. Notwithstanding, Charlie showed a rare ability to detect Maier's heart rate spikes, and after intensive training, he became a certified service dog, aiding Maier with episodes of dizziness. Additionally, Charlie excels in agility and rally obedience. As Qatar's first therapy dog, he assists in education and therapy, helping students with stress and aiding children on the spectrum with speech and occupational therapy.
Life Hack A force-free approach to training Maier adopts a force-free, positive reinforcement approach in dog training and tailoring methods based on size and breed. She emphasises universal forcefree principles, considering a dog's needs, health, history, and environment for personalised training plans addressing underlying behavioural issues. According to Maier, no breed necessitates a heavyhanded approach; force-free training is universally applicable.
Common misconceptions about dogs and training Maier dispels the notion that dogs exhibiting behaviours such as barking or growling are inherently ill-behaved, emphasising that dogs lack humanlike cognitive abilities. Challenging behaviours often stem from the dogs' struggles, and behaviour modification requires dedication and time. Maier, stressing the cognitive level of dogs, underscores the need for patience and empathy in training. Additionally, she highlights the crucial bond between dog and owner in addressing behavioural issues, emphasising the owner's role in establishing a strong relationship.
Understanding dog owner responsibilities in Qatar Maier likens owning a dog to having a perpetual baby, stressing the necessity of abundant patience and resources.
Regardless of the dog's age, adhering to strict routines for training and meeting their needs demands significant effort. Maier recommends volunteering or fostering to assess if owning a dog is the right decision. She highlights the responsibility of preventing harm and the trend of acquiring high-energy breeds without adequate training. Some adoptees may lack socialisation or have experienced trauma, presenting integration challenges that require awareness and commitment. Jasmin stresses the importance of leashing dogs in public areas and complying with Qatar's strict leash laws for safety and respect.
Choosing a qualified dog trainer Maier advises dog owners to ensure dog trainers possess formal education and valid experience. Growing up with dogs doesn't guarantee qualification; it is important to verify formal education from reputable institutions, not just online academies. A minimum study time of 12 months based on modern science is crucial. Reputable certifying bodies, such as IAABC, provide an alumni database. Maier warns against trainers using aversive tools such as slip leashes and shock collars, suggesting skilled trainers focus on behaviour modification with harnesses and long leashes. Maier emphasises the exclusion of pain, intimidation, fear, and flooding from behaviour training.
Challenges and gaps in pet services in Qatar In Qatar, weather and a shortage of dog-friendly spaces challenge owners. According to Maier, despite improvements, there are still gaps in essential services hindering training and behaviour modification, such as: • Psycho pharmaceuticals: Essential for addressing mental health issues in dogs, but none approved in Qatar. • Canine physiotherapy: Unavailable locally in Qatar, forcing dog owners to seek help abroad. • Dog products: Expensive and scarce locally; shipping costs often exceed item value. • Veterinary specialists: Not present in Doha; owners travel abroad for consultations. • Fear-free groomers and vets: Limited awareness, requiring owners to manage situations closely. Experience harmonious lifestyle Embracing evolution In the realm of wellness, evolution is constant. It's the propeller steering the spa towards pioneering new frontiers, continuously unveiling novel experiences for its guests,” informed Burcea. ESPA Life's brilliance isn't confined to opulent amenities; it's a manifestation of holistic well-being. Burcea explains the spa's approach to mental health – mindful wellbeing. “It's a harmony between mind and body, interwoven seamlessly into each treatment, delivering instantaneous and lasting benefits that extend far beyond the spa's walls,” in Burcea’s words.
ESPA Life isn't merely a space; it's an experience meticulously designed to foster relaxation, mindfulness, and a harmonious lifestyle. "Our sanctuary spans 3, 000 square metres over three floors," Burcea explained. "It's a space crafted with intention, balancing indoor and outdoor areas, natural light, and sensory elements. It's an environment that whispers relaxation and encourages mindful rejuvenation." As the conversation continued, Burcea delved into the future. "ESPA Life offers one of the most advanced spa experiences in Qatar, with five treatment pillars and a skin clinic,” she shared. "We will be introducing visiting practitioner programmes in 2024, enhancing our current offerings and providing new experiences for both first-time and repeat visitors."
When asked about standout spa experiences, Burcea offered, "Each experience at ESPA Life is unique, tailored to suit individual needs. Our spa hosts are adept at guiding guests to find the perfect treatment." Burcea's pride in ESPA Life's distinctive offerings shone through. "Our treatment offering includes exclusive Cryo Therapy for face and body, increasing circulation and creating a tightening effect. Additionally, we offer a lymphatic compression massage, supporting weight loss and detoxification. Our facilities include the Wlyd Erth Café, extensive thermal facilities, a gym, relaxation lounges, and an available snow room in both male and female spa areas." "The uniqueness of our sensory testing at the start of every treatment empowers our guests to choose the right aromatic experience for their spa journey," Burcea emphasised. "This method encourages optimum treatment results, leaving our spa visitors feeling balanced and restored." In the serene confines of ESPA Life, Burcea's vision and the spa's commitment converge, offering not just treatments but holistic experiences that transcend the realms of relaxation, rejuvenation, and wellness. Montero Sport: Where design meets power and reliability Mitsubishi Montero Sport offers a blend of style, performance, and affordability, making it an excellent choice for various road conditions.
he Montero Sport gets a refreshed look with a new dynamic shield front grill, updated bumper, and modern LED lights. At the rear, the lamp layout and spoiler have been redesigned for a sleeker appearance.
Engine and performance The 2020 Montero Sport boasts a potent 3.0-LITER V6 MIVEC engine for strong acceleration, even under heavy loads or uphill drives. It features a groundbreaking 8-speed automatic transmission, a first from Mitsubishi Motors, ensuring enhanced fuel efficiency and a smoother, more refined ride. Designed for utmost stability and traction, its robust frame and aerodynamic profile contribute to solid handling and reliable performance on highways. The dependable 4WD traction, coupled with advanced suspension, keeps the vehicle in close contact with the surface, ensuring firm control. The drive mode selector allows seamless switching between 2WD (2H) and 4WD (4H, 4HLc, 4LLc). For off-road ventures, specific modes like GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND, or ROCK can be engaged for improved traction. The Hill Descent Control (HDC) mode selector activates automatic brake application for maintaining downhill speed, allowing the driver to focus on steering. Active Stability & Traction Control optimally regulates braking and traction for stability during cornering and torque loss prevention during wheel spin. On steep slopes, Hill Start Assist (HSA) maintains braking force for up to two seconds after brake release, preventing rollbacks until the accelerator is applied. With its versatile design, this model conquers a wide range of challenging terrains.

Safety
The 2020 Montero Sport comprises a range of safety features dedicated to safeguarding both driver and passengers. These include the Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM) designed to avert or reduce frontal collision damage. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) employs radar to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, particularly beneficial in slow traffic. Radar sensors on the rear bumper enable the Blind Spot Warning system (BSW) and Lane Change Assist (LCA) to detect vehicles in rear, left, and right blind spots, enhancing safety during lane changes. The Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS) aids in preventing collisions during parking by emitting a warning if the front or rear sensors detect a nearby obstacle. Furthermore, the Multi Around Monitor displays views from cameras situated on the front, rear, and sides of the vehicle, aiding safe parking manoeuvres. Mitsubishi Motors’ RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body significantly enhances collision safety performance by efficiently absorbing energy and maintaining high cabin integrity.
On Wheelz
The body, which is made sturdy and lightweight using high-tensile strength steel plates, contributes to a high level of collision safety. The Montero Sport also incorporates seven SRS airbags, offering crucial protection by absorbing impact force during a collision. This comprehensive system includes front airbags, front-side airbags, curtain airbags (including third-row curtain airbags in the 7-seater), and a driver’s knee airbag.
Utility and interior The cabin of the 2020 Montero Sport exudes luxury with features like plush leather seats, dual-layered cushioning, and spaciousness. Attention to detail is evident in elements such as flat accent grips, double-
stitched PVC door grips, two-tone black power window switch panels, and large single-stitched ornaments. Utility updates include a user-friendly 8-inch colour LCD meter cluster, a first for Mitsubishi vehicles, adding to the cockpit's sophisticated ambiance. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is complemented by updated HVAC controls and a new AC power outlet at the rear console for gadget/phone charging. The advanced Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA) enhances connectivity, allowing drivers to navigate and stay entertained easily. The system enables seamless music playback via USB or Bluetooth, and calls can be made through voice commands. The power tailgate, integrated with the Keyless Operation System, offers a range of convenient functions.
