The Umm Al Seneem Park stands out as one of Doha's latest park developments.
Al Seneem Park has earned the prestigious distinction of holding a Guinness World Record for hosting the largest air-conditioned outdoor path, measuring 1.143 kilometres in length. Similar to the technology employed in Qatar's football stadiums, solar panels contribute over 60 percent of AC power. Further, to sustain the 26°C temperature, climber plants envelop the tracks from all angles, mitigating heat influx.
The park is also equipped with various amenities including play zones, fitness stations, food kiosks, bike rental facilities, and a range of additional offerings to enhance visitors' experiences.
The Umm Al Seneem Park features a massive AC outdoor path enveloped in greenery, offering a year-round walking
or jogging facility. The pathway's tube-like design includes outdoor air conditioning for comfort, with separate tracks for walkers and runners.
The playground has been split into agespecific sections for children aged 2-5 years and 6-12 years, each with suitable play equipment. The adjacent benches allow adults to relax while kids enjoy.
Three fitness stations are strategically located throughout the park, furnished with user-friendly workout machines, which are conveniently accessible from the outdoor path.
Explore the Reflexology Pathway and indulge in the soothing benefits of foot therapy. Wander barefoot along the trail adorned with stones, engaging in the practice of exerting pressure on various sections of your feet.
Near the park's east entrance, one can find Bicycle Rental with 6 bike types, including kids' and family bikes, ranging from 30 minute to hourly rentals.
Inside the park, there are six food kiosks. Adjacent seating areas provide a space to relish beverages and treats. These kiosks operate from 3pm to midnight.

On the sidelines of CVS: China Visitors Summit 2023, QH speaks to Alexander Glos (Alec, in short), CEO of i2i, the pioneer of a China-focused global standard that has seen sharp growth and momentum, to understand his view of the Qatar market for such initiatives.
QH: You've organized CVS events in the past. Could you share your thoughts on that?
Alec: Certainly, since 2008, CVS events have been organised worldwide, originating in Shanghai, China. The concept has evolved significantly from its earlier iterations. Over time, it has been successfully held in various European countries, the US, and the Middle East.
QH: Please share your thoughts and drive behind the Summit? And how it could benefit both the countries?
Alec: CVS is unique as it immerses attendees in the destination. Unlike conventional conferences, we don't rely on pictures and words; we create a tangible 3D experience. This greatly benefits buyers – they witness the destination and travel products firsthand, becoming true ambassadors. They return to China with real experiences, enhancing their role as effective buyers and sellers to their clients.
QH: Could you share a past summit moment highlighting collaboration between Chinese buyers and Qatar's tourism?
Alec: An impactful CVS moment was in Rome pre-Covid. Beyond the usual sightseeing, the Colosseum visit stood out. Exclusive access to parts usually closed to the public was a unique experience.
Buyers explored areas used for game preparations, including animal quarters. This exclusivity wowed them.
QH: Looking ahead, how will Qatar's tourism benefit from collaborations fostered at the CVS?
Alec: The potential from China is huge. Just 13 percent of Chinese have passports, indicating an emerging global travel trend. Qatar stands to gain, given its preserved culture and family-friendly appeal. Unlike some traditional destinations, Qatar maintains its authenticity.
Qatar has been a supportive partner, offering ideas, introductions, and organisational assistance. We've formed valuable connections here. Between Doha and Dubai events, we have 150 suppliers – around 75 each for CVS. Qatar's and Dubai's markets are well-balanced. Despite being smaller than the United Arab Emirates, the industry response is remarkable. CVS benefits hoteliers, showing a market exists and is growing. These relationships will prove valuable for years to come.
QH: Have you visited Radisson Blu Doha previously? Any thoughts on the property?
Alec: Radisson Blu Doha is impressive, thanks to its excellent team. A great hotel hinges on its team. The diversity caters to various group sizes and traveller types.
Numerous restaurants are available. The hotel is proactive and well marketed. During the CVS, the Chinese delegates explored Qatar's culture, tradition, economy, and the business landscape. Collaborating with CVS enabled Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha to exhibit its exceptional offerings as a premier Qatar establishment.
“We are delighted to host buyers from 98 participating agencies from key Chinese cities,” said Emre Kocamustafaogullari, the hotel manager, Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha.
During the luncheon, Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha, presented its offerings to visitors through a property tour, encompassing selected rooms, food and beverage outlets, and recreational and wellness facilities.
An iconic hotel for 44 years, Radisson Blu Doha offers upscale amenities, 583 modern rooms, and eight awardwinning restaurants, including a buffet, coffee shop, five bars, and a 1,450-capacity nightclub. It provides topnotch services, two gyms, pools, sports courts, and more for guest comfort and recreation.
Following the property tour, a luncheon meeting featured the hotel's cherished handcrafted specialties and a brief display of Arabic hospitality.
QH converses with Ding Hai Yang, deputy general manager, Suzhou China International Travel Services Co. Ltd.
QH: Do you view Qatar's business potential?
Ding Hai Yang: Certainly, Qatar's business potential shines with the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Chinese audience shows keen interest due to the World Cup impact. Qatar appeals to diverse Chinese visitors – families, groups, individuals. Its local luxury market further enhances its allure. We collaborate with local partners to share insights, extending influence on China. Our goal is to highlight Doha's appeal and attract more Chinese tourists. Qatar's strong focus on safety and hospitality resonates deeply and aligns with our safety priorities.
QH: Can you share your perspective on summits such as the one between China and Qatar, and how they might benefit both nations?
Ding Hai Yang: I believe that summits such as these hold great promise for both China and Qatar. They provide a platform for meaningful collaboration and exchange of ideas. It's important to note that similar summits have taken place in various countries before, including in Europe and the US. This historical context indicates that such events can lead to enhanced cooperation between nations. In the case of Qatar and China, this summit has the potential to foster even stronger ties. Overall, the CVS stood as a triumph for Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha, underscoring its ability to deliver memorable experiences for travellers to the country.

lace Vendome, the upscale mall in Lusail City with a Parisian influence, is elevating retail standards in Qatar through the implementation of extended operating hours.
This move enables visitors to engage in late night and post-work shopping without time constraints. The mall will now remain open for an additional hour, from 10am to 11pm between Sunday and Wednesday, and from 10am to 12 midnight, Thursday to Saturday.
Notably, these extended hours will also apply to the mall's popular entertainment attractions, providing families more opportunities to enjoy leisure activities on weekdays too. The convenience
of combining dinner, shopping, and entertainment with loved ones is a prime focus of this initiative.
For diners seeking culinary experiences at the diverse restaurants and cafes within Place Vendome, the extended hours mean stress-free dining from 9am to 12 midnight, Sunday to Wednesday, and from 9am to 1am, Thursday to Saturday. This move within the local market is a direct response to the enthusiastic demand from the public.
Carole Sabbagha, mall manager, Place Vendome, has said, "By extending our opening hours, we position ourselves as pioneers, offering visitors ample time to fully experience our splendid mall. As Qatar's retail trendsetters, we aim

In conversation with Iyad Sabbarini, a consummate leader in the food and beverage industry, QH culls his take on leadership, corporate profits and his secret success mantra.
very journey – long or short –has a beginning. Iyad Sabbarini’s 20-year odyssey in the food and beverage industry is not only a long one, but it began in a focused way right as he enrolled at Philadelphia University to pursue his studies in Hotel and Tourism Management.
Speaking of that journey, Sabbarini says, “I had intensive training in five-star hotels throughout my university journey. However, I found my interests taking me to gastronomy, where I learned how to manage high pressure during peak service times, successfully launch new menu items, restaurant concepts, how to navigate changes in food trends, and build strong teams with different leadership styles that deliver exceptional customer experience.”
Ruminating on the path traversed, Sabbarini adds, “Adapting to customer feedback and technological advancements also played a significant role in this exciting journey.”
How has his diverse cultural background influenced his leadership approach and contributed to his achievements in the industry?
Sabbarini attributes the diversity of his Western and Middle Eastern cultural backgrounds as having enhanced his ability as a leader to understand and connect with a wide range of people, both customers and team members. This has led to more inclusive and innovative approaches, better communication and a deeper understanding of different preferences and perspectives within the food and beverage industry.
Business success and profits are synonymous and Sabbarini is of the opinion that achieving consistent profit requires strategic planning, adaptability, continuous improvement, and utilising data analytics to understand customer preferences, effective budgeting, cost control and investment decisions across various aspects of the business.
But none of the above can fructify without a high team morale. Explaining his methods of balancing results and team morale, Sabbarini is unequivocal on the need of a leader who is “attentive, empathetic, and adaptable”. He further explains that it is about creating an environment where team members are motivated to achieve goals because they feel valued and see the organisation through the leader's mirror and celebrate achievement as a team. “This reinforces the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie,” attests Sabbarini.
Successful negotiations in the food
and beverage industry require balancing to “achieve your business objectives and nurturing positive, cooperative relationships with your potential partners by building trust, leveraging strengths and a win-win mindset”.
Most leaders move companies and industries. Moves mean transferring their practical skills on to the new job and seasoned leaders such as Sabbarini do this effortlessly.
“While acquiring industry-specific knowledge is undoubtedly valuable, individuals who effectively transfer their practical skills are often the ones who will excel in their new environment,” mentions Sabbarini, detailing that one such skill is effective communication, and another crucial skill is problem-solving.
To this, he adds adaptability and says that this is also vital when transitioning between industries, and leadership
qualities such as motivating teams and making decisions.
But the list of skills is incomplete without effective time management which is another skill that is crucial in any position.
Sabbarini concludes that the secret to achieving immediate results lies in leveraging these “transferable skills, combining them with industryspecific knowledge and being proactive, resourceful and open to challenges in the new environment”.
Commenting on the role of leaders who play a motivational role, Sabbarini says, “Maintaining exceptional interpersonal dynamics involves nurturing a collaborative and supportive environment. When people feel valued and empowered, they are more likely to work together effectively to tackle challenges and achieve goals.”
As a visionary executive, how does Sabbarini foresee the future of the food and beverage industry, and what role do innovation and inspiration play in it?
“Innovation and inspiration are integral to the future of the Food and Beverage Industry. They drive the creation of novel dining experiences, unique flavours and more sustainable practices. Visionary leaders who harness innovation and draw inspiration from diverse sources will likely be at the forefront of shaping the industry's evolution,” signs off Sabbarini.

Sarah Faheem, interim director for student life and engagement, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar in an exclusive parley with QH talks us through what VCU offers and some illustrious alumni of the university.
QH: What exciting surprises does your campus life have in store for students?
Faheem: While to an outsider it may seem as though VCUarts Qatar is simply a school where students study art, we, in fact, provide a well-rounded campus experience to our students, which is comparable to that of much larger university campuses with multiple schools.
We have a miniature version of a full-size university ecosystem where our students have the capability and opportunities for leadership development, experiential learning, extracurricular activities and athletics.
For such a small campus, we have amazing resources, including a Digital fabrication lab (FabLab) a Printlab, a materials library and access to the many resources and libraries across Education City the Innovative Media Studio as well as other studio spaces, and gallery exhibition spaces. Access to all these various resources ensures an engaging campus life and an enriching study experience for our students.
QH: How does your university make its promise stand out for students who’ve chosen this university?
Faheem: Our promise to students is that we'll make sure that experience on our campus be a fulfilling and enriching one in more than just academic learning. Our programmes provide experiential learning opportunities that will help them learn through travel, leadership, and international education experiences where they can attend other universities for semester exchange programmes.
QH: Tell us about the unique opportunities students can explore outside the classroom at your university.
Faheem: The fact that we are part of Education City (EC) in Doha and the multiversity initiative provides our students with unparallelled opportunities and access to other university resources that are not possible elsewhere. EC provides our students exposure to five or six other institutions with students from all over the world coming together, studying different things, but taking part in collective experiences.
Our own VCU Qatar campus programmes are also a highlight and differ from the main campus experience in that they offer programmes such as the International Education Semester Exchange, study abroad programmes, the Richmond Leadership Exchange programme where students take on leadership roles on the main campus. This “mothership” relationship with our main campus provides many unique resources for our students here.
QH: How does your university foster a vibrant and inclusive student community?
Faheem: Our location within EC provides an important and vital opportunity for VCUarts Qatar to create programmes and organise events that are geared towards not only our own students, but also allow students from outside our university to participate and attend, including events that require collaborations between students from different universities. Another element that fosters a culture of inclusivity is our housing programme which helps students feel included in the overall EC environment.
Another initiative that stands out is called Cultural Conversations, which are dialogues organised with the main VCU campus in Richmond, where our students connect with the main campus students. Through that programme, the respective students educate each other about diversity and how sometimes, diversity and inclusion can mean different things to different people in different contexts.
QH: Can you share some success stories of alumni who’ve thrived in the job market after graduating from your institution?
Faheem: We have more than a thousand thriving alumni, it is hard to narrow it down! Shaikha Al-Sulaiti, the interior design manager at Msheireb properties; Esra Al Kazem, design director and co-founder of AEA Designs; Nimrah Kabiruddin, a graphic design graduate who is famous for her creative designs of laser cut plywood products spanning from puzzles, to famous landmarks and souvenirs.
Eiman Al Shamari, head, Young Adults Library, Qatar National Library speaks to QH on its role as the foremost libraries in the country in shaping the lives of students here.
QH: How is Qatar National Library (QNL) preparing to support students as universities begin a new academic session?
Al Shamari: QNL’s guides cover a full range of subject areas, highlighting recommended resources such as databases, books, journals, reference materials and other resources in various formats. Students can further explore the Online Resources page and access a comprehensive collection of academic materials and databases for their research or assignments. These databases span various disciplines, and many are interactive.
QNL offers additional services such as OverDrive, a database giving students access to ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and more for free. Students can subscribe to leading international newspapers using the PressReader app.
The Library’s diverse educational and recreational programmes serve as a key QNL’s tools for student success supplement their learning experiences and meet their information needs while our reading and study spaces offer a conducive environment for individual or group work. The Assistive Technology Center is specially designed for people with disabilities underlining our commitment to fostering not only academic achievement but personal growth and lifelong learning.
QH: Can you discuss the collaborative efforts between QNL and Qatar Foundation universities to enhance students’ learning experiences?
Al Shamari: QNL and Education City (EC) universities together elevate the quality of students’ learning experiences through joint workshops, seminars, book launches, and special guest lectures to offer students comprehensive and valuable resources to enhance their learning. QNL’s Cultural Salon with Hamad Bin Khalifa University
(HBKU) is an important initiative to promote periodic events through dialogue with subject-matter experts from a variety of fields and create a positive atmosphere that enriches culture and raises public awareness. Another such initiative is the QNL Engage Podcast, now in its third season, to give students access to expert voices from EC universities.
QH: How is QNL adapting to provide seamless access to digital and physical resources for students?
Al Shamari: At the core, libraries have always been about fostering a love for learning and opening doors to knowledge. In today’s digital age, QNL has been quick to adapt with its QNL mobile app and extending the reach of QNL beyond its physical walls, allowing everyone to access vast knowledge outside the classrooms and lecture halls. Additionally, students have uninterrupted access to the Qatar Digital Library to work on their research projects or pursue topics of personal interest, in addition to the Heritage Library.
For students accessing our physical resources, they will find public computer workstations, digital media production facilities, a variety of collaborative and individual learning spaces, and Innovation Stations to learn about new technologies.
QH: Are there any specialised programmes for different
disciplines to meet the diverse academic needs of students?
Al Shamari: QNL’s resources reflect a holistic academic support strategy aimed at fostering a successful learning environment including writing and citation assistance focusing on improving academic writing skills and Citation Support that assists students in understanding and applying citation rules effectively, using the website’s integrated tools.
QH: How do multimedia resources contribute to a holistic educational experience for students?
Al Shamari: When used effectively, multimedia resources can help cater to diverse learning preferences and promote active engagement. The Digital Library hosts the world’s largest collection of historical reports, letters, manuscripts, maps, photographs and sound recordings on the Gulf, Arabian Peninsula, and neighbouring regions, which is free to access worldwide.
QH: What strategies are in place to help students navigate and evaluate vast amounts of information?
Al Shamari: QNL Guides are a useful tool for students to navigate our databases and help them conduct a web search effectively. Most databases use a help feature that explains how to conduct simple and advanced searches. Students can also use the “Ask Our Librarians” feature should they need more help. Our Open Access is a core value and has motivated efforts to develop and advocate for open access research in Qatar and internationally for many years. QNL offers a broad variety of services to support unrestricted access to Qatar-based research. This includes developing the Manara – Qatar Research Repository to support a permanent archive of Qatarbased research.

QH: What makes your nursery a magical place for little learners to explore and grow?
Ghoshal: We foster an ambient environment for our children through a nexus of state-of-the-art infrastructure, international learning methodologies and expertise from our trained and experienced staff. This facilitates the transition from home to school while keeping the fun and excitement intact.
QH: Share a fun and memorable learning activity that captivates young minds at your nursery?
Ghoshal: One of our most beloved learning activities is brain gym which challenges our children through puzzles and games to enhance their cognitive skills.
QH: How do you create a nurturing and supportive environment for the little ones to flourish?
Ghoshal: We try our best to create a home away from home for the children for the little time they spend at our nursery, and our patient and loving staff facilitate the mission of providing a nurturing environment for our children. We achieve this through our supportive and dedicated team of trained teachers, teaching assistants, nurses, and a doctor.
QH: Tell us about the creative ways you make learning enjoyable and interactive for preschoolers.
Ghoshal: We strongly believe in learning through play and fun. We teach lessons through songs, role plays, games, storytelling, etc. We have created themed play zones and each month has a different theme at the nursery, where children can
see the physical manifestations of what they are learning in the classroom and engage in a hands-on experience to better understand their lessons.
QH: Can you share a heartwarming story of a child's remarkable progress since joining your nursery?
Ghoshal: One of our students was shy and struggled with social interactions initially. Over a few months, we have seen remarkable progress in his interactions and this was possible through small group
activities and personalised attention. The platform is for children to express their potential work wonders.
QH: How do you encourage parents' active involvement in their child's early education journey?
Ghoshal: We believe in all-round development of the children – therefore parents’ contribution is mandatory and examples include tree planting activity, painting with your child, reading is fun with your kids, etc. We are huge fans of feedback loops, hence regular communication with the parents and parent teacher conferences enables us to create a strong partnership between home and nursery.
QH: What unique theme-based activities does your nursery offer to spark curiosity in children?
Ghoshal: We recently hosted a circus themed event at the nursery with the aim of giving them a taste of fantasy before they mature. Revisiting the theme of magic, children explored the distinctions between the real and the imaginary. The circus event involved colours and lots of audiovisual elements to spark curiosity in the children and potentially inspire their interests.
Advice for new little learners: Embrace curiosity, ask questions, and never be afraid to explore.
A timeless incident with valuable lessons for children: The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle demonstrates that growth requires patience and time. Similar to a seed that needs nurturing care to become a plant, children also need time and support to express their potential.
Tip to build resilience: We encourage mistakes and teach them to face challenges instead of running away from them. Teamwork and problem-solving are central tenets of this mission.
Special activities to foster a love for learning: Our Book Club sparks excitement for learning through a variety of books to suit any child’s palette. No cookie-cutter approach!
Rebecca Lea Barlow, managing coordinator, TLC Nursery, speaks to QH on their initiatives to create inspiring journeys for their students to flourish in life, with a belief that by nurturing a strong sense of balance in all the lives they touch they will make a positive lifelong difference.
QH: What makes your nursery a magical place for little learners to explore and grow?
Lea Barlow: We encourage our little learners to explore and grow in a way that their learning is unhampered, and they can try out new skills without fear of mistakes. Our dedicated rooms provide the best age-appropriate early years experiences, with beautiful established gardens that wrap wonderfully around the entire nursery campus and there is plenty of opportunity for outdoor adventures. At such a fundamental age in a child’s life, the surmountable growth, experimentation, and a budding understanding of the outdoor classroom provides plenty of opportunities for children to learn, play and develop their awareness of the world around them and how they can contribute to it.
QH: How do you create a nurturing and supportive environment for little ones to flourish?
Lea Barlow: We recognise that children thrive in environments that support their individual and diverse development needs
Rebecca Lea Barlow, managing coordinator, TLC Nurseryand our inclusive spaces are nurturing and supportive of all children. Enabling environments offer security, comfort, choice, engagement, and opportunity, in which children can thrive. This means consciously creating warm, loving, sensory rich environments where their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are recognised, honoured, and met by their family and their community. Within our nurturing and enabling environment our knowledgeable practitioners optimise the development and learning potential of each child.
QH: How do you encourage parents’ active involvement in their child’s early education?
Lea Barlow: Parent involvement in a child’s early childhood education results in quality learning and care outcomes. It leads to better personal, social, emotional development. From setting achievable goals to celebrating successes, from providing guidance to creating moments of connection – the power of our presence is tremendous. We are a family, it's important that our parents feel a part of what it is we are creating for the children and be included and involved in this adventure.
Advice for new little learners: You are enough; life is in your hands; never settle for less than you can be; challenge yourself to come out of your comfort zone. A valuable lesson for children: It’s okay to make mistakes, no one goes through life mistake-free, it is super important that we teach our children not to fear making mistakes for if you learn from it, it was not a mistake it was a lesson, and we grow from missteps made.
Resilience-building tip: Resilience is dependent upon a child having strong, healthy relationships with adults. Therefore, focusing on your attachment with the child will subsequently help support the development of resilience.

“From Earth. For Earth” – that’s the mission-driven tagline of Enavra, the home-grown company that provides a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic. Sara Naveed speaks to Enavra’s founders –Abdullah Shaat and Saoud Al Emadi to understand their inspiration behind an unconventional business, how well are their products being accepted in the local market and the way ahead.
QH: How did you come up with the innovative idea of utilising upcycled food waste to combat plastic pollution?
Enavra: Several fruit seeds have a chemical structure that is close to plastic. By altering the chemical structure of these fruit seeds and processing them, we end up with raw material that can be moulded just like plastic. This process is widely available and can be applied to different waste material in different forms.
QH: What challenges did you encounter along the way?
Enavra: We faced challenges in finding raw material that would be completely biodegradable in nature without human intervention. Such material needs to be based purely on organic material as a source, which could be costly and difficult to find and process.
QH: Enavra offers a biodegradable alternative to plastics that decomposes within a year – how do you envision this innovation reshaping the environmental landscape in Qatar?
Enavra: Our mission is to reduce plastic waste in Qatar as much as possible. Since we started in 2020, we have replaced over 15 tonnes of plastic waste in Qatar. By increasing the variety of our biodegradable products, we envision a future where we don’t need any plastic disposables.
QH: Can you share any inspiring success stories or real-world applications of your bioplastic solution in reducing single-use plastic consumption?
Enavra: Several restaurants and cafes in Qatar have adapted our products and completely replaced their plastic disposables with biodegradable alternatives.
QH: In a society still grappling with waste issues, how do you see Enavra contributing to heightened environmental awareness and sustainable practices?
Enavra: By offering an alternative to cutlery that is biodegradable, consumers and businesses are encouraged to make more sustainable choices and reduce plastic waste. It's a culture that has been growing fast in Qatar, and it's a matter of giving people the tools to continue practising sustainable habits, as well as try to inspire others to think of innovative ways to help with this issue.
QH: What role do local partnerships and collaborations play in furthering Enavra's mission and impact?
Enavra: By collaborating with local communities and businesses, Enavra

is extending its reach and influence. Specifically, local partnerships can help in having the resources for us to operate and make the actual products, as well as help distribute them regionally. These collaborations can also foster a sense of shared responsibility for environmental sustainability, as different entities work together to promote the use of biodegradable products. It's all about giving momentum to the movement to become a constant in the country.
QH: As dynamic cofounders, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make a positive impact on the environment through innovative solutions?
Enavra: Start with identifying a real problem that poses a threat to the environment, and how your idea can help. Having a clear and realistic goal keeps you driven and focused. When thinking of a solution, it's important to make sure it is easy and accessible for people so they're more motivated to be part of whatever you come up with. Early on in your journey, try to work with experts so you can gather different perspectives to make an informed plan, with more effective results. When it comes to ideas related to the environment, make sure you incorporate sustainability in every aspect of your business. It'll make your work a lot more inspirational for whoever comes across it, having more faith in your
work, and believing in the fact that you're truly selling a mindset, not just a product. Be patient. Be prepared for challenges and setbacks; but remain persistent in your mission. Making a change is never easy and it takes time, but it'll happen eventually, and it will be worth it.
QH: Looking ahead, what exciting developments and goals can we expect from Enavra in its ongoing quest to create a cleaner and greener planet?
Enavra: Our current goal is to expand our products beyond cutlery to include other single-use plastic alternatives such as plates, cups, and packaging materials. Once we're more established, we want to give back to the community that has been helping us since day one by investing in other environmental initiatives. We want to focus more on educating consumers, businesses and communities on what a huge difference such small changes on their everyday practices can make, whether it's things we provide, or others do, as long as people are following them. Like any other business-owners, of course we want to scale Enavra's operations and distribution to reach a wider international market, thereby reducing plastic waste on a larger scale. Finally, we just want to see more policies that regulate and encourage the use of biodegradable materials and discourage the use of single-use plastics. Any which way Enavra can help make this happen, we're ready for it!

Vietnam, located on the eastern edge of Southeast Asia, has an interesting twist in its shape – a natural ‘S’ by virtue of how its borders curve. The country is rich in myriad ways – be it natural beauty, the ancient culture, and an incredible history, writes Avishikta Sarkar who hopped in three directions of the country – north, central, and south – to get a variegated flavour in her fist.
ietnam is rich in myriad ways - be it natural beauty, ancient culture and an incredible history.
The variety is mind boggling – right from paddy fields, national parks, cave exploration, to Buddhist pagodas, beaches and luxurious high skyrises, Vietnam has a plateful for everyone. It is precisely this beauty and variety that I had underestimated while planning my trip.
Being an adventure enthusiast my biggest reason to visit Vietnam was to explore the caves and bask in nature.
I flew a seven straight hours from Doha to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Situated in Northern Vietnam, Hanoi is a mix of centuries old structures and modern architecture. I had a night in the city and maximised it with the water puppet show – an amazing theatrical display of Vietnamese culture and folk
stories, highlighting farming that is rooted in the culture; a walk around the Hoàn Kim Lake that is surrounded by a park and houses a temple, connected via a wooden bridge.
My taste buds needed satiation and the local fare rewarded me with a spread of local bistros offering a wide array of delicious dishes and an interesting spread of chairs & tables to mimic a kindergarten milieu. This was my key visual takeaway from the food shops in the Old Quarter streets.
Another attraction of Hanoi is the Night Market that operates only on weekends and on weekdays opens shutters around 7pm. The busy street closes on traffic to give way to brightly lit pop-up shops which sell everything from apparel, shoes, bags, jewellery, souvenirs to food.
I concluded the evening with a joyride on train street – a narrow strip of train tracks, just enough for the train to pass, dotted with houses and cafes alongside the track. You can sip coffee by the track in one of the cute cafes and watch a huge train pass by. What blew me away was the atmosphere of the place – colourful, vibrant, and full of life. I chose one of the liveliest of cafés, where I tried Egg Coffee, a must try item, and it is over egg coffee that I witnessed the passing of a majestic train and the coordinated efforts of locals in clearing the track and convert it into a tourist attraction.
A paradise for adventurers, Phong Nha, which can be travelled from Hanoi, has mountains, caves, a river – in a word, nature in all its beauty in a capsule. Locals claim that the Phong Nha region has more than 300 caves, some of which are still unexplored. The Son Doong cave, one of the largest caves in the world, is situated here. It takes about 3 days to explore this cave.
Optimising my limited time, I took a flight from Hanoi to Dong Hoi (the nearest airport) to reach Phong Nha after about an hour’s drive. My next two nights were heavenly in a beautiful homestay – one of many – on the banks of the Son River with the most gorgeous view of the river and the surrounding mountains, spangled with cafes. The two days of rural experience was a fresh change from the fast-paced city life.
With a skimpy tourist population one can explore the town by hiring a scooter or a bicycle. I explored the region thus –driving by the mountains and enjoying the countryside, taking in the silence of the forest, greenery of the paddy fields and fresh country air.
Next day, I explored two caves –Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave – in a small group tour organised through a local agent.
Paradise Cave is about an hour of driving from Phong Nha, followed by a one kilometre hike up the mountain. Considered the longest dry cave in Asia, this one has a huge inside chamber with long stalactites and standing stalagmites, which the locals have named after the shapes they resemble. Inside the cave it felt as if I was transported to another planet and the structures around gave an impression of aliens from sci-fi movies.
On the way back, we had Vietnamese lunch, which gave a flavour of local cuisine and a communal style dining where everyone shared from the same platter.
Next was Phong Nha Cave which we reached from Phong Nha by boat, cruising on River Son, passing through the beautiful countryside and mountains. Part of this cave, complete with an inexplainable serenity and peacefulness, is explored on boat when the underground river flows into the cave, with its calm and eerie enveloping us. The only sound we could hear was of the flapping of bats and the paddles through the water. The rocky structures hanging from the wall gave it a surreal effect while lights installed at some points alternating with the dark patches, lending it a mysterious vibe. I distinctly felt a meditative touch here.
My next stop – Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in southern Vietnam and its financial and business hub, is named in honour of the North Vietnamese president, and surrounded by Saigon River. Ho Chi Minh City is very cosmopolitan with busy streets, colourful food markets (complete with its amazing restaurants and cafes offering international fare), and vibrant community life.
Ho Chi Minh City has over 7 million two wheelers, with the riders navigating the busy streets like street heroes. I highly recommend hopping onto one to experience the city, adding a dash of adventure to the travel kitty like I did!
My first experience was a food tour, a must try, managed by local youth to combine the best of local cuisine across various districts of the city. We passed by Notre Dame Cathedral, the city's Central Post Office and a few other popular landmarks. Enjoying a combo of city highlights, the vibrancy of motorbikes,
we explored hidden gems of the city –notably Chuoi Nuong i.e., grilled banana with coconut milk; the colourful flower market; and the Cambodian market, a popular hangout place for locals. The Cambodian Street food market had shops lined up with a variety of seafood, meat, and other dishes. My favourite was the Vietnamese pizza. I would also recommend the delicious Banh Mi, a local sandwich. Our last stop was for desserts at a local flan cake shop that served the best Bánh Flan.
imagine how soldiers put such a confined space to such diverse use. There is also an open firing range, where civilians can try out few military weapons. I was thrilled to fire an AK47 and an RDP machine gun, much like Rambo movies.
Mekong Delta is a vast maze of tributaries, swamps and islands, home to floating markets and islands dwellers, with the picturesque scenery on the cruise through Mekong River, a bonus. I also took a sampan ride (a small wooden boat) through the narrow waterways with coconut palms lining both sides, catching a glimpse of the rural lifestyle.
Water puppet show and train street –Hanoi;
Phong Nha’s tranquillity and the serenity of its caves;
Cu Chi Tunnel; Local food.
Travel tips:
Next day morning, I took a day trip to Cu Chi Tunnel (a massive underground multi-level tunnel network which was used as a hideout that doubled up as living quarters, suuply route, hospital, and command centre of Vietnamese soldiers) and Mekong Delta.
Away from urban hustle bustle of Ho Chi Minh City, these carry historical vestiges of the Vietnam War. The tunnel was about 90 minutes' drive from Ho Chi Minh City, and I found it difficult to even
In the evening, I explored District 1 on foot, sampling the ice-tea that most cafes offer as a welcome drink. Dinner was at a sky-restaurant in the city, offering a panoramic view of the night skyline – a view I shall cherish for keeps!
On my final day, I had half a day to explore the city on a motorbike taxi to go around places. My first stop was the Vietnam War Remnants Museum, that displays a collection of aircrafts, tanks and armours used by the US Army during the Vietnam War, apart from themed rooms exhibiting photographs and ruins as an effect of the war. The visit to the museum is emotional seeing the aftermath of the war and its catastrophic effect.
My next stop was the famous Ben Thanh Market – the hub for food and shopping, housing over 1500 shops, selling everything under one roof, from clothes, textiles, souvenirs, accessories, shoes, electronics, food. A true shopaholic’s paradise.
I wish I had more time in the country, but I came away convinced that each part of Vietnam has something unique to offer for everyone!

t is universal – yet it is difficult and universally difficult since it comes with no operating manual. Making lives seamless after going empty nest for any parent is not simple and there is no one size fits all. And one cannot prepare before it happens – we go through it, and we can choose to grow through it – that's the saving grace.
We arrive at some ways and means of going through the process punctuated with tears and heartbreaks to begin with and it is a safe assumption (backed by research) that mothers feel the pinch more because we are the primary carers. It is like facing redundancy at work – after 18 or 19 years, when we crammed every extra minute we had with something that the child needed, we are out of jobs. Psychologists say it takes close to two years to go back to being the independent human being we each are before being a mother.
The extreme sorrow graduates to waiting for the next vacation and eventually with children having lives of their own, parents grow up enough to work on accepting that all the years they planned for financial security, college education, building homes, and so on, was, in effect, a preparation for going back to how life started – an empty nest.
It has taken me nine years to realise this, and it is only now that I can, with some authority, claim that I can write effortlessly on it, sans the tears or the lump inside the throat. And mind you, life carries on and since it does and has to, this IS the time to rediscover a slice of our own selves – that self whom we relegated to the back burner when the kids arrived and were growing.
Here’s a look at some steps that can help empty nesters.
Parents sending off children to college is a milestone but one that comes with its share of challenges for parents. The only option is to be flexible, learn through the process, and accept this phase for what it is: a milestone, writes
How many of us stopped pursuing our hobbies – could be reading, travelling, watching movies, visiting people we love or getting back to the workforce? Now is the time to make a list of things you’d like to do that you might have put off in the child-rearing years. Start off by making a list or spending some time journaling, arriving gradually at a list of things you want to do, projects you want to take on, people you want to spend time with, and places you want to go.
Likely, it will see a phase of catching up with no one else but yourself – right from your health & fitness; time with your ageing mother; and fixing the homes that you may have built, across cities and countries. Give yourself some time to deal with those things and once you’re ready to move forward, you need to be intentional about making decisions and looking ahead.
For some of us who have close relationships with our children, it can be easy to focus too much attention on their lives instead of remaining present in our own. And once they leave, the transition back to the self is daunting.
Getting to know the person in front of the mirror is important. Mind you, the self that gave up hobbies to raise kids is now no more – we have technology on our palms to re-educate ourselves and find out what best to aid in this phase. Socialising with old friends, cultivating new ones, prioritising exercise – just daily walking, and yoga – to lift your mood can go a long way in helping you find the ropes to a new life. A structured day goes to build a structured life.
It works best to ease your transition into living by yourself or with your significant other by setting new goals that will cultivate a sense of independence and the wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you fulfil them and it could be as subjective as taking a college course that you’ve long wanted but couldn’t, authoring a book, or running a marathon, see new places – each of these or others need preparation and will eat into time that usually gapes at us when we begin our empty nest journey.
• Reach out: One mistake we usually make is to try to sort life alone when reaching out for support from family members and friends helps immensely. Being honest and open with the emotions you are experiencing and allowing yourself to receive the counsel, comfort, and care of others who have experienced what you’re going through reinforces the feeling that you are not alone.
• Accentuate the positive: Any transition can foster negative or unhelpful thinking. You may spend too much time reliving old memories, inviting depression and loneliness. Instead, focus on the positive by keeping a gratitude journal which can help put life in perspective.
Life carries on and since it does and has to, this IS the time to rediscover a slice of our own selves –that self whom we relegated to the back burner…

Talk about blending of tastes and cuisines – traditional and contemporary – and the only address in town is Cila Restaurant at Alwadi Hotel, writes Azqa Haroon, as it artfully mixes local Qatari elements into its décor.
s soon as I stepped into the charming Cila Restaurant at Alwadi Hotel, I was transported to a world that beautifully reminisces Qatari culture and local traditions. The decor, adorned with elements inspired by dhow boats, pearl diving, and travel bags, immediately set the stage for an authentic and immersive dining experience.
The highlight of my visit was the restaurant's newly launched menu, which promised to introduce me to a world of relish and delights. Launched on September 1, 2023, I couldn't have been more eager to dive into the culinary adventure of the new menu – ahead of everyone!
The chargrilled watermelon and feta combination of the Watermelon Feta Cheese Salad was truly unique. The smoky char of the watermelon beautifully complemented the creamy feta, creating a refreshing and unexpected pairing that left my taste buds tingling with delight.
The Lobster Rocket salad was a real treat, featuring generous chunks of lobster. The succulent lobster meat paired with the freshness of the rocket greens made for a light yet indulgent start to the meal.
For a refreshing twist on a classic Middle Eastern dish, the addition of pomegranate seeds elevated the tabbouleh to a whole new level. The tabbouleh was the perfect palate cleanser, bursting with both the tangy and the sweet - a combination that's to be tasted and experienced!
The Grilled Octopus with eggplant and pomegranate was a standout dish. It was tender and packed with smoky richness, perfectly complemented by the bounty of the eggplant and the tartness of the pomegranate. Each bite was a taste sensation.
The Potato Croquettes – these little bites of heaven were a delightful surprise. Crispy on the outside and oozing with cheese on the inside, they were a savoury delight with a touch of Arabic spice – enough for it to add to the taste.
The Salted Shrimp Kunafa was a revelation. The outer layer was super crunchy and crispy, giving way to the perfectly cooked shrimp inside. It was a textural marvel and a flavour bomb.
The slow-cooked Lamb Kleftiko was a celebration of tenderness and rich wallop. The meat practically melted in my mouth, and the aromatic spices used in the preparation added depth and complexity to each bite.
The Chicken with Freekeh was a hearty and satisfying choice. The earthy zing of freekeh paired excellently with the tender chicken, creating a dish that was both comforting and tasteful
In conclusion, my visit to Cila Restaurant at the Alwadi Hotel was a gastronomic journey through the heart of Qatari and Levantine cuisine. The unique blend of traditional twang with a contemporary twist displaying the scrumptious heritage of the region. Each dish was a testament to the chef's skill and creativity, and the warm Qatari hospitality added an extra layer of charm to the entire experience. I can't wait to return and explore more of the gastronomic wonders that Cila has to offer. If you're in Doha and looking for a memorable dining experience, I highly recommend giving Cila Restaurant a try.
QH’s Azqa Haroon handholds us in her gourmet experience – a flavourful one – at Glass House Restaurant, Al Aziziyah Boutique Hotel, Aspire Zone.
ome eateries are more than just that – Glass House Restaurant is one such – a culinary oasis offering a diverse range of gastronomic delights throughout the day.
The very first draws are the vibrant interiors, and the open-air terrace. With stunning vistas overlooking Aspire Park's lush greenery, the milieu felt akin to dining in a splendid greenhouse – a unique and enchanting setting that set the stage for an exceptional dining escapade.
To kick off our culinary journey, we were greeted with a delightful surprise – a basket of crispy chips and an array of flavourful dips, accompanied by a delectable red sauce. This warm welcome truly set the tone for the lavish experience that awaited us.
Our appetites piqued, we delved into the Seafood Bouillabaisse soup, a masterful concoction comprising scallop, fresh hamour, shrimps, garlic croutons, parmesan cheese, and rouille. The medley of flavours danced on my palate, reflecting the freshness and expertise that went into creating this dish.
Next up was the show-stopping Signature Maki Platter and Shrimp Tempura. The Maki was a revelation –each piece bursting with a symphony of flavours and textures and an ensemble of crazy crab, prawn tempura, salmon tataki,
and spicy tuna, displaying the culinary team's prowess in blending ingredients harmoniously.
For the main course, we indulged in a Wagyu Fillet Grade 7-8 Steak and a Gulf Sea Platter. The Wagyu Fillet, accompanied by a pecorino potato cake, cherry tomato confit, and pan jus, was a celebration of succulence and precision cooking. The Gulf Sea Platter, comprising grilled hamour fillet, prawns, lobster, and citrus butter with sautéed baby vegetables, was a maritime symphony that transported me to coastal flavours.
As the grand finale, the desserts took centre stage. The fanciful smoky Ferero Caramel Dome, adorned with warm caramel sauce, hazelnut crumble, and whipped ganache, was a visual and gustatory delight. Equally enchanting was the Caramelised Pecan Nuts Cake, featuring layered milk and mascarpone whipped ganache, shaved dark chocolate, and a warm chocolate sauce. Each bite was
a harmonious crescendo of sweetness and texture, melting effortlessly in the mouth. It would not be wrong to say that this restaurant is more than a dining destination – it is a culinary sanctuary. From the lush surroundings to the meticulously crafted dishes, every element of this experience is a testament to culinary artistry. The restaurant's commitment to excellence is evident in every dish, and I left with a sense of gratification, eager to return for yet another extraordinary dining extravaganza.

Upon my arrival, ESPA Life welcomed me with a breathtaking panoramic view that encompassed the bay and Lusail skyline, a perfect prelude to the luxury experience that awaited, along with a refreshing welcome drink containing chea seeds.
As I ventured into the vitality pool, I knew I was in for a one-of-a-kind experience. The anticipation built as I relaxed on the heated beds, waiting for my therapist to guide me to the treatment room. ESPA Life's approach was personalised and thorough, starting with a detailed consultation with my therapist. I was matched with Theresa, my therapist for the day, who prepared me for a deep tissue massage combined with stretches –tailored precisely to the degree I prefer.
The treatment room was a haven of relaxation, complete with carefully chosen music that enhanced the experience. Theresa's skilled hands worked their magic, identifying and soothing every pain point in my body. The deep tissue massage left me revitalised, and I felt a newfound lightness. After the treatment, I indulged in a tasteful cuppa of mint tea in a comfortable relaxation area before experiencing the aqua shower's three types of waterfall options, unique to the spa.
ESPA Life also provided well-equipped changing rooms that ensured I was ready to face the day ahead. My visit to ESPA Life was more than a spa experience; it was a journey that nurtured my body, mind, and soul. The attention to detail, the expertise of the therapists, and the holistic approach to wellbeing set ESPA Life apart as a true haven of rejuvenation.
The deep tissue massage left me revitalised, and I felt a newfound lightness.
ellowface by R.F. Kuang offers a thought-provoking journey into the heart of the publishing world, exploring themes of identity, cultural appropriation, and the influence of social media. The novel follows June, a white author who deceitfully claims her late Asian friend's work as her own, delving into the complexities of authorship, success, and morality.
Kuang's skilful storytelling captivates with a satirical narrative that navigates the cutthroat industry, revealing the pressures writers face in pursuit of recognition. The plot's intrigue intensifies as June battles accusations of theft and plagiarism, grappling not only with her own dishonesty but also with the broader implications of profiting from another's work.
A compelling layer of irony emerges as Kuang, an Asian writer, weaves a story from the perspective of a white protagonist. This artistic choice adds depth to the exploration of cultural appropriation, prompting readers to question the boundaries of storytelling and the influence of personal background.
As the story unfolds, the narrative's pacing accelerates, mirroring the tension June experiences when confronted with online contempt and threats. Kuang expertly captures the modern phenomenon of social media's ability to shape reputations and dismantle lives, forcing June into a desperate struggle to uphold her fabricated identity.
Through June's experiences, Kuang raises important questions about privilege and manipulation within the industry, challenging readers to consider the ethical implications of creative work.
In her departure from fantasy, Kuang's debut in this genre proves her versatility as a writer. Yellowface, with its enthralling, fast-paced narrative, keeps readers engaged until one closes the book.
By dissecting the commodification of culture for personal gain, Kuang offers a poignant commentary on the contemporary publishing landscape, leaving readers with lasting reflections on the intersection of art, identity, and success.
No matter what your opinion is on film adaptations but do attempt The Last Voyage of the Demeter that’s loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Directed by André Øvredal [known for Trollhunter (2010) and The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)], Demeter takes on a single chapter from the renowned novel – the 7th chapter, in which the crew of the Demeter ship, responsible for transporting Dracula's body, faces terror at the hands of the infamous vampire. This unique perspective offers a fresh angle on a wellknown narrative, generating considerable anticipation and securing its place on this month's roster.
Express your thoughts as you may regarding the 2018 film The Meg, but one thing is clear: it was fully aware of its nature and lived up to expectations. For enthusiasts of delightfully cheesy B-movie entertainment and knowingly playful creature features, Meg 2: The Trench is all set to provide sufficient mind-relaxing, popcorn-worthy thrill to carry you through a couple of hours on a sweltering weekend.
Express your opinions as you see fit about film adaptations of video games, but it's worth noting that their quality has been improving. Contrary to preconceptions, Gran Turismo draws inspiration from a true story linked to the renowned racing video game it is named after. Headlined by David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, Neill Blomkamp's action-drama revolves around a skilled gamer (Archie Madekwe) who seizes the opportunity to prove his abilities. He enters a competition with the aim of becoming a professional race car driver.
