FILM IN FOCUS

LARA CROFT MAKES A COME-BACK IN TOMB RAIDER WHAT HAPPENS TO LARA CROFT? DOES SHE SURVIVE THE MANY ORDEALS THAT FACE HER? IS HER QUEST FOR THE TRUTH ONE THAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED? WHAT WILL SHE DISCOVER? AND WHAT ELSE IS WAITING ALONG THE WAY FOR LARA CROFT.

S

tarring Alice Vikander as Lara Croft, Hannah John-Kamen (Game of Thrones) and Walton Goggins (American Dad) amongst a host of stars, this is the latest and much anticipated movie in the Tomb Raider series of cinema and computer games. Lara Croft’s father went missing when she was a young teenager. Growing up, she has not been able to come to terms with his disappearance and cannot face the fact that she will never see him again and will never know what happened to him when he disappeared on his last adventure. Confused and lost, she tries to make her way in the World on her own terms – she is now 21 and rides around trendy East London working as a bike courier. In between trying to earn enough money to pay her rent, her

intention is to attend college courses – but nothing is working out for her. She finds herself desperate to explore and understand what happened to her father and somehow finds the courage to set off on her travels to reach the fabled tomb on a mythical island, which could be off the coast of Japan. But even the journey there is going to prove extremely hazardous: there are so many dangers in trying to reach the island that she will be taken to the limits of human endurance even before she reaches her destination. The physical, mental and emotional challenges that must be overcome are enormous but she will push herself over and over again to surmount them. And that’s before she even reaches the island where she will search for evidence about what happened to her father, so desperate she is to know.

Fiercely independent and utterly determined, using her physical and mental strength to push her way through all the barriers along the way to the truth; if you love the character of Lara Croft – the iconic video game heroine, we know we will love Alicia Vikander.

Director: Roar Uthaug | Genre: Action, Adventure | Cast: Alicia Vikander, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar 15th March | QH Fun Fact: Alicia Vikander will not only be the second actress to portray Lara Croft in a movie, but also the second Oscar winning actress to do so after Angelina Jolie.

MEGHAN MARKEL THE MILLENNIALS’ ‘ROYAL FASHION ICON’ MEGAN MARKEL NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION SINCE SHE STARRED IN SUITS, OH AND OF COURSE, NO BIG DEAL, AS SHE STEPPED INTO THE ROYAL LIMELIGHT FROM WHEN SHE STOLE PRINCE HARRY’S HEART, ALONG WITH OURS! AS ALL EYES ARE ON OUR GORGEOUS ROYAL-TO-BE; FASHION STYLIST AND BLOGGER POOJA ADAM TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT MEGAN’S EVOLVING STYLE TO SEE WHETHER THIS LA-GIRL COULD BE TRULY THE MILLENNIALS’ ‘ROYAL FASHION ICON’

14

During her public announcement to Prince Harry she was wearing a gorgeous white coat made by Canadian fashion brand ‘Line the Label’ which had immediately sold out, leaving the designers to rename the coat after her, ‘The Meghan’. Furthermore, on Christmas day she made us all want to be a ‘Chloe girl’ dressed head to toe in camel coloured tones. Meghan’s most notable style since being engaged to Prince Harry has been a series of elegant, classy and luxurious winter attire which is quite the switch from her more racy and revealing outfits that she had been spotted wearing during her time as an actress.

As she takes on the more modest (respectable approach) to dressing, we are able to see that she still continues to draw in the crowds, whether it was from her 1m instagram followers or from the public lining up to catch a glimpse of her at events, her influence remains strong in the millenial world.

Meghan’s style can go from something so relatable, for example when she wore jeans and a shirt with ballet flats whilst watching the tennis, or turning the volume up in her occasionwear, like when she wore an alluring Ralph and Russo dress for the announcement of the Royal engagement. Meghan has proved that her daywear and occasionwear manages to show off her gorgeous figure, without compromising on the her ability to inspire everyday women through her style.

If her appearances this year have been anything to go by, Meghan’s style is able to touch and inspire others! She was a huge icon before the Royal engagement announcement and she continues to prove herself as a style icon in our books! Even though she has deleted all of her social media accounts, we will surely be glued to our mobile phones and TVs later this year when she marries Prince Harry. We will have our popcorn and bunting ready, anticipating what our “Millennial Royal Fashion Icon” will wear down the aisle!

get cul tured DR. WILLY KEMPEL ARTIST AND AUSTRIA’S AMBASSADOR SHARES HIS PASSION FOR ART AND HIS MANY PROJECTS INVOLVED IN THE DOHA ART COMMUNITY. AND COLOURIST WALTER CAVATOI GIVES US THE 101 ON COLOUR GRADING.

CULTURE TALK

YOUR NOT SO TYPICAL JOB WALTER CAVATOI A PROFESSIONAL COLOURIST IN DOHA GIVES QH THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT THIS NICHE PROFESSION IS ALL ABOUT.

Being a professional colourist, what drove you into this industry? A few years ago not many knew what a colourist was, me included. I got into the industry at the beginning of 2001 when technology became cheaper and with other friends I started filmmaking to have a political voice. We founded a pirate TV in Italy – Orfeo TV – and I was doing a bit of everything: shooting, directing and editing.

18

Back then Youtube didn’t exist, and social media and video sharing on the Internet was at its very early stages. Through filmmaking we were highlighting stories and social conflicts forgotten by the mainstream media. Later, editing became my specialty and colouring was part of the job. I quickly fell in love with it and I spent the last 10 years improving that skill as a colourist and finding my place in the industry.

Name top colourists that inspire you in your daily work?

There is so many out there: Dave Hussey, Steve Scott, Peter Doyle, Tom Poole. Also

CULTURE TALK photographers and painters are great inspiration. The work of Roger Deakins, to stay within the cinema industry is tremendously evocative and inspirational.

For the people who don’t know what colour grading means, can you give us the lowdown?

Everybody knows what is Photoshop, right? What a colourist does is similar but on thousands moving images. We put the image in a correct technical place and following the director’s notes we manipulate colours to help tell a story. Then, of course, a colourist has to fix shooting mistakes or add digital beauty makeup. Finally he has to adapt the digital master to many different outputs and make sure everything will be seen has intended. That’s very challenging now days with so many platforms: TV, cinema, Netflix, web, etc.. If a Chef can be compared to a director, a colourist would be the one who makes the topping and decoration. A great dish has to taste great but also to look good. Content and visual – ultimately – have to convey the same coherent message.

Tell us your most challenging projects you’ve had to encounter as a colourist and why?

Every project is a new challenge. It may be hard the first time working with a new director or in a new country because everything changes. The cultural references, the fashion trends, the lingo. One of the most challenging projects I have recently encountered is a TV series, 13.11, with 6 independent episodes all shot in different parts of Europe by 6 directors and 6 different crews. It was very hard to deal remotely with so many different teams and try to make every episode unique and still consistent with the others.

Which has been your proudest film/project you’ve colour graded and why?

I am proud of all those projects where I can put a lot of myself into without overstepping.

I am proud when the audience is in love with my images without feeling they have been coloured. That’s usually the case with documentaries: big efforts and low return in terms of exposure for a colourist, but very important work. It makes the difference, even more than on a commercial film. One of the latest Docs I am more proud of is: “The Black Sheep” by Antonio Martino shot on a war zone in Libya. Despite all the difficulties is a great looking film.

If you could have the opportunity to have a sit down with any filmmaker, or colourist – who would it be and why?

I would sit down with Lars Von Trier. I hate him and like him at the same time. I still haven’t figured out how he is an artist and human being. It’s fascinating. For different reasons I would also sit with Aki Kaurismaki, he is one of a kind and I like his humor.

In your opinion, what are some challenges faced as a colourist here in Doha?

Traditions and culture play a big role in Doha, with a constant tension towards modernity and also more western values. All this complexity has to be carefully crafted into a unique visual style. As a colourist I need to have intimate understanding of the local sensibility and translate that into colours. For example, skin tones have to be in the right place and there is a special care in not showing too much of people’s body. And on that note, I have many of tools and techniques I can use to hide and focus viewers’ attention somewhere else. Colour wise, Doha has definitely more yellow tones than any other place I have been working in. Desert and sand project strong yellow/green hues; buildings, people’s clothes, and seawater are affected and even our perception of the sky’s colour.

If we would go through your music playlist, what kind of tunes would we find? My playlist is quite outdated. You will find weird mix of different stuff from classical music to jazz and electronic. LCD soundsystem is one of my favourite bands and Miles Davis and his “kind of blue” has been on my playlist for over 15 years.

And lastly, favourite spot in Doha to visit?

The former fire station, now turned into an art centre.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Local Spotlight with Bojan Petrovic GENERAL MANAGER BOJAN PETROVIC IS CURRENTLY AT THE HELM OF PROMINENT RESTAURANTS SUCH AS ZENGO AND TORO TORO. HE SHARES WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN SUCH FLOURISHING VENUES. How long have you been in Doha and how do you see hospitality for 2018?

I moved to Doha in October 2014, so almost 4 years now. Hospitality in Doha has experienced an expansion throughout this time. A lot of new venues have been opened lately; a nice part of it has a very bright future.

What have been some challenges you’ve had to overcome with Qatar’s current market?

Every day is a challenge when you work in hospitality. Qatar is a small country with a wide range of offers; you need to find a way to be unique and to keep your standards high. You need to have a high-quality product and to maintain the same level during the years, or even to make it better.

Hospitality is a very demanding field, how do you balance your working and personal life?

It really is, however if you put your love and passion into it, it becomes easy. I am lucky to have a partner who is from the same field, and she know how difficult is to find the balance. On the other hand, I always manage to find the time for the things that I am also passionate about.

20

What is your strategy for success?

There is no strategy for success, you must work for it, and earn it.

What is one lesson you’ve learned in this industry that could serve as advice to our readers?

I’ve leaned so many lessons during 17 years of working in hospitality. It is a cliché, but you should never give up and you must push your limits to achieve your goals. If your results are not showing, never change you goal – change your approach.

How do you uplift your co-workers’ morale in times of need?

The crucial part of every workrelationship is to convince your team members to believe in the same idea, and to put the passion while implementing it. Nobody can do anything alone.

What are some exciting new things you’ll be implementing within the restaurants for loyal and new clients?

We are preparing something similar to Loyalty program for our guests and they will have benefits in our outlets in Doha. Both Toro Toro and Zengo are constantly working on new promotions and implementing new ideas as we always aim to be unique and to offer to our guests the best possible experience.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

The Artist with a Stroke for Compassion DR. WILLY KEMPEL IS NOT JUST AN ARTIST, BUT ALSO AUSTRIA’S AMBASSADOR. THE ARTIST LETS QH IN FOR A CANDID INTERVIEW WHERE HE SHARES HIS PASSION FOR ART.

the long history of the country art has always been a decisive factor on how to identify the soul of the country. Music, plays, painting, philosophy, the role of museum and opera directors and more often than once breaking artistic or societal taboos have been strong identifiers of the history of art in Austria. As distinct examples one can mention the poured paintings of Hermann Nitsch or the overpaintings by Arnulf Rainer.

What is you artistic preference/of choice?

Artistic preference is oil painting with painting knife in mixed technique using various styles, materials and formats (from very small to very big).

Now living in Doha, how do you continue that passion of yours?

What got you into art?

Family background with a mother who painted realistic paintings though I wasn’t personally intrigued at that early stage in life. Later on I grew a strong interest in arts of all kinds and soon getting to the point of buying painting equipment and starting to experience that painting knife technique most suitable. This took place in 1988 in a small town out of Geneva, Switzerland, when passing an art shop and seeing the smile of the old lady owning the shop, entering, buying and going home and starting to paint.

22

Growing up in Austria, what were some artistic hobbies you had, or were part of ?

Artistic hobbies from an early age were writing poetry with a number of publications, acting and appearing in a number of plays and later as said, painting and participating in group and sole exhibitions, art projects of different kinds and mixing painting with other forms of art such as music, poetry and plays.

How big is the art scene in Austria?

Art and Austria can almost be synonyms as in

In Doha I had the privilege to be introduced very soon after my arrival to the art world of KATARA and apart from organising artistic encounters and being very often present in its art scene, I was invited to be part of the 2017 mural paintings and thus got to know local artists, joined the International Artists of Doha Group and became its chairman mid2017. The art group exists since 2011, it’s a very lively and diversified group and includes also a number of Qatari painters. Each month we do art-together, either exposing ourselves to new surroundings and techniques. Lately we have been painting in the court-yard of Sheikh Faisal Museum with invited guests, which exhibited in the art gallery of the museum for

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT one month. We have also held two workshops, one being on cubistic art in the Fire Station Gallery, and one on calligraphy during a workshop in the Museum of Islamic Art. In future, we will visit other places to paint and to be inspired such as Banana Island or Richard Serra installations in Zekreet to be inspired. Moreover, we are involved in community and societal activities such as painting with children at the Qatar National Library, and with guests at the Beit Amen Centre, shaping public spaces of the three new hospitals in Hamad Medical City, and also being part of the wellbeing program of HMC. In future we will also be present at Hamad International Airport, and Kahramaa Awareness Park, just to name a few. Our annual showcase exhibition will take place form 24th March to 9th April in the 29th floor gallery of the W Hotel under the theme “Emotions.”

Favourite exhibition galleries?

Modern Tate Gallery in London, Museum of Modern Art New York, Musée d’Orsay Paris, Guggenheim Museums New York and Venice – just to name a few.

In your opinion what is art and what defines an artist?

For me art is the outer voice of an inner artistic room found within oneself. Artists are messengers between inner and outer worlds, connecting times, values and inspirations for others.

Are you currently working on an art piece?

Currently I am working on a number of pieces among them the art work for the annual exhibition, studies for the works to be produced for the HMC hospitals and preparing the involvement in the well-being program of HMC.

What is your method/process to begin and finish a piece of art?

My method of inspiration when starting a new painting relates with colours, transcends into a movement and finishes when the canvas speaks by itself and does not need any more intervention from my side.

QATAR MUSEUMS MARKS MILESTONE IN PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE QM LAUNCHES THE SECOND PHASE OF AN ADVANCED MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY SURVEY THAT IS SET TO MAKE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PRESERVATION AND CELEBRATION OF THE COUNTRY’S CULTURAL HERITAGE.

T

he project is based on an innovative partnership with leading figures from the University of York, who have worked closely with a team of experts from QM’s archaeology division. The second phase of the project focuses on surveying areas near the beach of the UNESCO World Heritage site at Al Zubarah. The site was an important point of contact for people both inside and outside the Arabian Gulf, which has made it a significant archaeological, historical and economic point of reference. The second phase of the survey was carried out using remote sensing technology, which helped select sites best suited for exploration. The archaeologically rich area may potentially contain shipwreck remains and other historical artefacts linked to the trade routes used in the past. The area also provides a rich source of information on ancient living environments as well as the sea levels of the Gulf from prehistory to the present time.

During the first phase of the project, which was launched last May, the team conducted surveys of known submerged marine archaeological heritage sites, identifying a number of shipwrecks in many areas using state-of-the-art technologies on board the RV Janan vessel. The results included discovering shipwrecks in the north of Qatar, which were recorded and documented on 3D high resolution images. These results contribute to the enhancement of marine archaeological sites both in Qatar and across the region. Additionally, they help increase the awareness and interest of Qataris in the sunken monuments and marine heritage, while at the same time; enhance the touristic experience in Qatar through creating open marine museums. In addition, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) encourages States to focus studies on submerged monuments and the significant implications that they show about ancient people and settlements.

PETER LANGNER

FASHION DESIGNER PETER LANGNER SHOWCASED HIS LATEST COLLECTION AT PER LEI COUTURE DOHA, AND QH SAT DOWN WITH THE COUTURIER FOR AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW.

28

FASHION TALK So it’s your trunk show in Doha today, what can we find?

Would you say your brand is targeted to bridal and couture?

Can we say it’s exclusively Haute Couture?

How would you describe your brand?

Spring/summer collection and a little bit of winter’s too – a little bit of everything.

It’s a little bit of haute couture and luxury ready-to-wear, so it overlaps. We do have the couture service as we do pieces tailoredmade and if it needs changes/adjustments. Also, haute couture is very over the top nowadays, so it comes in handy with the wedding gowns.

How would you describe your SS’18 collection?

It’s very eclectic, very unique and special. We worked with a lot of different materials; you can find porcelain in some pieces, hand embroidery, silk chiffon in others. Also handpainted fabrics, all dresses are done in-house, and we’ve done a lot of fabric experiment as well.

Your inspiration for this collection?

I always start with fabrics, and drappings. So every single dress is treated and looked in a very different way in regards of its shapes, proportions – rather than it being a fashion trend. I rather create a dress that is timeless.

And how did you get into fashion?

Long time ago, 30 years ago! Actually a friend of mine asked if I could do her wedding gown, and then another one and so forth.

FIND IT

It’s definitely not ready-to-wear. Our main customer is a one-on-one and tailoredmade pieces.

What can I say, it’s a true artisan workroom, where we invented fabrications, transform materials, we love to recycle and re-use fabrics. We also get the fabrics made.

What kind of woman do you design for?

We love to create memories. And we want everyone to have something that is very personal, and feel special, and feel like you. That is very important for us.

Are you very much in control of the creative process?

Yes, very. But I actually design after we’ve drapped the dresses on the mannequin. Then we sketch, which only takes about 10min.

Where do you see your brand heading to in the future? Oh, I don’t know. I dream, I dream. I would like to have a big runway shows, dress big celebrities – it is done with so much passion, but there isn’t much time to get recognized. And here in Doha, I love that people are able to appreciate details, and this form of style and it’s not ‘just a gown.’

A SHOE FIT FOR A

STRONG WOMAN QATAR’S VERY OWN SHOE DESIGNER HISSA HADDAD HAS LAUNCHED HER LATEST SHOE CAPSULE COLLECTION EXCLUSIVELY SOLD AT SALAM STORES. THE DESIGNER SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON EMPOWERING WOMEN, AND HOW SHE USES SHOES TO FEEL BOLD AND STRONG EVEN IF THE ROAD GETS ROCKY OR COLD.

With a newly launched shoe collection, how did this journey begin?

I started doing the research back in 2015, I took some courses to learn about the business, on how to build a brand, and just learn more about fashion design in general.

With beautiful and intricate details, who or what inspired your designs?

I wanted the collection to be inspired by Qatar itself. I wanted to become an international brand, but also, wanted to transfer a message of our heritage: What are we like in this region, what is our country about? Show all aspects of Islamic art: gold, pearls, and much more it has to offer.

Favourite style to wear?

I love mules in general, but I don’t have a favourite one.

LOCAL FASHION

Even if the person is not famous, if they carry a unique story with a successful ending, I’m intrigued.

What have been some challenges you’ve had to overcome within the industry and journey?

I’ve had a lot to overcome, but I think the biggest challenge has been balancing both my fulltime career and this passion of mine. The shoe collection was all manufactured in Italy, so a lot of traveling had to be done. I had to go for weekends abroad and supervise everything – you really need a good support system in order to do this, since I wanted to be very handson on the process. Even to its last detail.

“May your shoe lead you to success” is a line found inside your shoe design. Was that motto your idea? Yes, I wanted to support women in general. I do believe in women empowerment. Even when I’m down, I go to a specific shoe and that will boost my energy and confidence.

Follow Hissa Haddad @hissahaddad

Your colour palette in your designs appear to be bold and strong, is there a meaning behind your choice?

When I did the colour selection for the shoe collection, I opted for rich and strong colours. I’ve chosen strong colours because I believe they are suited for strong women – a strong woman who is not afraid to stand out. I wanted to create a shoe that said: Hi, I’m here!

You talk about empowering women, and do so with your striking shoe collection. Who inspires you to be so empowering? Everyone. I believe every woman is strong, even home-stay mums. They are powerful and strong in their own way. Every woman is strong, regardless of what she does.

Who inspires you on daily basis? I don’t have a specific person. I am inspired by stories, success.

BEAUTY TALK

BEAUTY 101

OUR BEAUTY EDITOR ANSWERS YOUR BURNING BEAUTY QUESTIONS. FIND OUT WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY.

Glossier

Q. I’m really into red lipstick, but I don’t know what hue of red suits my olive skin? A. Red is definitely not a tricky

colour, as what most people make it out to be. I recommend trying out reds with warm undertones, as well as reds with blue undertones. However, for olive skin, you’re one lucky gal because all reds suit your skin tone – it’s just a matter of being bold!

Q. I’m super fan of the matte lipstick, but my lips get very dry. Any brands you suggest that won’t hurt my lips at the end of the day?

A. With so many matte formulas out there in the market, it is so tricky to find one that won’t harm your lips. But a great tip to prevent lip disaster is adding a hydrating balm before applying your makeup and end it with the application of the lipstick.

BEAUTY TALK

Q. I’m not much of a foundation gal, but I still would like some coverage on my skin. Any suggestions? A. Easy. Try a CC Cream, or conceal the needed areas with

your favourite concealer – one that is buildable and long lasting. If that doesn’t make it, try a skin tint that will let your skin breath.

YSL

Biologique Recherche

Q. I’m super lazy to do my makeup in the morning. Any tips for a quick fix? A. There are great and fab beauty products you might want to keep in your beauty arsenal, such as multidimensional products that work easily for the lips, cheeks and eyes.

Q. My skin is super dull at the moment, I constantly add moisturizer to bring plumpness back to my skin. Nothing seems to work. Help! A. Moisturizers are great to keep your skin hydrated, but watch out what kind of moisturizer you are using – as it depends on your skin type. However, a good exfoliate will do the wonderful trick. Pack on the AHAs and BHAs to rejuvenate your skin and remove the dead cells.

STOCK BURGER CO. LOCATED AT HOLIDAY INN, THIS NEW VENUE IS SET TO BRING CASUAL DINING BACK ON TREND.

S

tock Burger Co is Doha’s newest gem if you’re into sports, casual dining and a great happy hour, of course. Located at Holiday Inn, QH decided to jump into the foodie wagon and test this place that’s already causing hype. Equipped with a myriad of TV screens for those who can’t miss their favourite games; from cricket, rugby to football, this place has got it all to come and enjoy with coworkers or friends. But hey, if you wish to enjoy it with family, they also got you covered offering an exceptional dining experience. And because we had to give you the lowdown on what’s good and what to taste when you visit, we started out with some of their appetizers: Avocado Flat Bread with sweet onions, garlic Parmesan, tomato, balsamic and green herb salad. Also, we gave the Garden Grilled Flat Bread a go with Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, balsamic and blue cheese. The Avocado flat bread was our fave if you’re torn apart between both. Before hitting the main course we peeked into what this spacious, modern and fun venue has to offer. With a spacious bar in the center for those to wish to enjoy to a bar-like atmosphere, and also for the intense aficionados, the venue also offers a private screening to watch the game. But that’s not all, happy hour is up from 12pm until 7pm! And finally deciding on main course, we opted for their specialty: burgers! We went with the SB House (options: single and double) with American cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, pickles, and its Killer Good Burger sauce. Boy, was that good. And not stopping there, we also tasted the Lone Star with cheddar cheese, beef bacon, Parmesan- Panko onion rings and BBQ sauce. A true star if you ask us. And because this place is set to fulfill your eatery expectations, they offer every month a specials menu, in which we gave their BBQ Beef Ribs a try. Sweet, tender, and smoky – we were in ribs heaven. And last but not least, it was dessert time, in which they offer delicious jars packed with your favourite sweet. From key lime pie, to brownies and oreos – they know how to end the night on a good and sweet note.

L

ocated aptly at the much happening Medina Centrale, Zaatar W Zeit is bringing the taste of urban Lebanese food to Qatar. “Simplicity with complexity is the phrase that would define this restaurant in terms of its food and ambience. The restaurant is very casual, economical and serves some of the delicious food that is very light for your appetite. The menu is sourced with fresh ingredients and made on order, offering various salads & wraps - both regular and healthier versions. And yes, healthier ones tastes amazing too. The drinks options are very limited, but the fresh juices makes up for it. If you feel confused about what to order, feel free to ask the staff who are ready for your call at all times, explain to you each dish and recommending what is best. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and during the pleasant weather months in Doha, there is nothing better than outdoor dining with family and friends as you enjoy the street views of Medina Centrale. I have visited Zaatar W Zeit quite a few times and here are my picks from everything that I have tried so far. And you do not have to drive just to the Pearl-Qatar to try Zaatar W Zeit. Z

affran Dining Experience is a restaurant that revolutionizes the eating experience here in Qatar. An entirely new era is ushered in with this restaurant that just recently won the Biryani Festival with their unique take on the classical dish (have you tried Biryani soda? Don’t knock it ‘till you try it!) Yes, indeed, Zaffran Dining Experience is that restaurant that keeps you coming back for more. With their revolving doors of changing menus every 6 months; you’ll never get bored! So let’s shine a spotlight on their latest excursion. Starting March 1st, Zaffran Dining Experience will be ushering in a new menu leading up to Ramadan. This isn’t just any old menu, no. The menu actually comes following a series of trials from their Masterchef competition. This competition allowed any foodies to submit their unique dishes in the hopes of getting featured in this upcoming month’s menu! Unofficial chefs from all walks of life submitted their differing culture’s unique foods, and the restaurant has hand picked a few to be featured on their upcoming menu.

After slightly altering the dishes to fit Zaffran’s unique and edgy aesthetic, these dishes can be found at the restaurant up until Ramadan and a portion of the profits will go to the aspiring chefs! Featured alongside a vast array of Zaffran’s own new dishes, this upcoming menu features countless cultures all under one Indian-spiced front. The options vary from Qatari traditional foods to a vegan biryani (the flour-based Kebab in it is a must try!). One of the most notable items has to be their “lamb chops.” This carefully put together appetizer features spicy, pan fried pieces of tender meat that is then attached to the bone of a lamb chop to make for an easy eating experience. The flavors and the spices used are simply incomparable! What really completes the meal is their complementary “iced biscuit” that is served at the end of every meal. This biscuit is served at -100 degrees and leaves smoke flowing out of your mouth, your nostrils- definitely makes for a funny snapchat opp! Zaffran Dining Experience have certainly made their mark on the food scene in Qatar. They have endlessly provided revolutionary and one-of-a-kind Indian dishes that remain unrivaled.

With this Masterchef Menu endeavour, they hope to inspire others and allow passionate chefs to showcase their creations. We’ve tried some of the highlights and we’re definitely going to make a good bunch of visits before this menu is gone. It is simply a must eat. The explosion of flavors is like no other. Zaffran Dining Experience truly offers so much more than simply a meal, it is an entirely new experience with every delicious bite.

How did you become Head Chef at The Porcini at The Ritz Carlton, Doha?

Well it’s quite a story! The Executive Chef of The Ritz came to our family restaurant in Trieste and tasted my signature dish: Ravioli Porcini. He invited me to come and be Head Chef at The Porcini!

When did you decide that you wanted to be a chef ?

Some of my family are chefs and I used to join them in their restaurants – I liked helping with the preparation – from the age of 12.

Apart from pasta, please tell us more about Italian cuisine.

Pizza actually started as street food and there are so many more dishes – to try them is to discover Italy.

Italy is also famous for ice cream and desserts – how important are sweet dishes? It’s really best to have a restaurant meal and have a starter through to a main dish and a dessert to experience a fuller range of Italian cuisine. And sweet dishes can even be combined with savoury – like Parmigiano ice cream which is delicious!

How do you feel about working for such a prestigious hotel – The Ritz Carlton, Doha?

Also, our knowledgeable esthetician added a neck, scalp and face massage. Our treatment ended with some magical toners, SPF, lip balm and spot treatment if needed.

ACTIVE MIND

Letting Go of the Perfection Olympics THE QUEST AND RACE FOR PERFECTION IS OFTEN EXHAUSTING AND UNRELENTING, SO LEARN TO LET GO OF YOUR PREREQUISITES FOR WORTHINESS SO YOU MAY BEGIN TO ACCEPT YOUR TRUE WORTH.

64

ACTIVE MIND Author Brené Brown says that Perfection (and its siblings Overachieving, High Efficiency and Wonder Woman-ism) is “nothing more than a form of armor we use to protect ourselves from being judged”. In the end, when Perfectionism is the pilot of our lives, Shame will be its copilot, and Fear their wingman. Call it whatever you want, but know that when you are constantly focused on perfect, your inner voice is saying that, no matter what you do, you will NEVER be good enough. And that’s no way to live. So, where do we go from here? How do we stop competing in this Olympic Games we set for ourselves, without even knowing, as a belonging-seeking coping mechanism? How do we free ourselves from the ‘Should’s’ and the ‘Must’s’?

S

howing up in the world. Every single day. No matter what. Talk about a stressful process. So we create armors. We develop defense mechanisms to protect us, to keep us as part of the tribe, as one of the team. Even when, in the process, we set rules and standards impossible to attain and, as a result, we become Perfection Olympians working tirelessly to win a toxic medal despite the pain, stress and sorrow it brings us. As Olympians, we tackle all that we are and do to meet the arbitrary requirements we believe are set for us by society. We compete on a daily base, not only with everyone around us, but also with the almostimpossible image we have in our heads of who we are meant to be. Phew! No wonder we are exhausted! From the way we dress, the style we choose, the activities we perform, the meals we cook and eat, the energy we bring to each room we enter, everything has been planned by our inner Olympic Perfection Committee. We are modern contestants in a game we haven’t fully adapted for. But either way, we play to win and leave it all on each match.

Easy. We do the work. We acknowledge the discomfort that imperfection and real-ness causes us and push through it to live more genuine lives. We stop comparing ourselves to every single human on Social Media and, instead, focus on showing up openly and sharing our mishaps as much as our triumphs (even if it’s not so publicly at the beginning) so we can bring some honesty back into the perfectionism-polluted cyber-world. When we make Authenticity the pilot of our life and bring Compassion (first to self and then to others) as its copilot, trusting them to guide us home and bring us back to our fullest human essence, we slowly and steadily will experience what is like to show up without needing or wanting masks and that will free us from the jail that is perfection forever. Are you ready to try it?

ACTIVE BODY

SPINNING INTO CONTROL NTANDO STEMMET JOINS THE TRIBE. FIND OUT WHICH TRIBE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT.

66

W

ACTIVE BODY

hen you’ve been exercising as long as I have, you develop a sense for what your body responds to and which workouts help you achieve your fitness goals faster; as well as what kind of workout you enjoy most. Enjoyment really is a major contributing factor in maintaining a workout regime. Of course if you’re one of the large group of people who would never use the word “en-joy” to describe any form of exercise, sticking with your workout regime becomes even more of a challenge. I fall into the category of people who genuinely love sport. Hence if I can play a round of squash, a game of tennis or even train for a half marathon rather than go into a gym to workout, then I’m actually winning at life. The sport option is however not always readily available to me, so I improvise with high intensity interval training (HIIT). Whichever category you fall into, it still takes a large amount of focus and motivation to get yourself to the gym regularly enough to make a difference to your fitness level and your body shape. Until recently, spinning was probably my least favourite form of cardiovascular exercise of the many that I have tried. I found the entire concept of being stuck on a stationary bike that’s clearly not going anywhere, staring at the screen that’s telling me how few calories I’ve burned frustrating and even a little bit aggravating. And just to add some contradictory peculiarity to how my mind works, I actually really enjoy running to nowhere on the treadmill. It’s my favourite piece of gym equipment. I cannot elucidate the innerworkings of my brain; some things I like – others not so much. The reason my sentiments on spinning have changed is solely attributed to the phenomenon that is Joujou Al Fardan. Not only is she beautiful with an insane figure, but also she is serene, equable and boundlessly personable. One of those people who just exude confidence from their core and have a virtually tangible positive aura. Side note: I’m aware that this is beginning to sound like a love letter - but seriously, have you met her? When I found out Joujou was launching Qatar’s first indoor spinning studio featuring high intensity cardio, muscle sculpting and strength training – I had to check it out; and so I did, and it was magnificent. Her new studio is called Ride Tribe and it’s located in the most active strip in Porto Arabia at The Pearl. I attended the ladies only class during Qatar’s National Sports Day and it was intense. The energy Joujou brings to the class is highly contagious, even when I was nearly out of breath I pushed through the fire in my legs merely by her willing me on from the front of the class. The rhythm-based choreography is highly addictive and carried me through the pain threshold where my body wanted to give up and my mind replied – not yet! The

Ride Tribe method is a full body, fat-burning workout that incorporates interval training. In the dimly lit room with strobe lights and rhythmic beats I found myself pushing through what my legs dictated was possible and reaching new goals. Climbing, sprinting, breathing and breaking through the barriers created by my mind. With every push and every pump, my muscles were all working in unison with my mind. It was all so balanced, everything was in tune, and I could feel that I was spinning into control. Control of my mind, control of my body and control of that small voice inside that says my muscles have reached their limit. And putting that voice in its place.

HEALTH FEATURE

YOUR SELF-CARE UMBRELLA ELLEN GOLDMAN, HEALTH AND WELLNESS COACH SHARES TIPS FOR A BETTER SELF-CARE AGENDA. Have you ever been caught in the rain with a lousy umbrella? The kind where a few of the spokes are broken, it’s difficult to open all the way and when the wind blows, it turns inside out leaving you soaked and defeated. Those faulty umbrellas might help out a bit in a drizzle but in the midst of a real storm, they’re useless. What’s this got to do with self-care, though? In my opinion, self-care is the umbrella that protects us from the faulty weather in our daily lives. Imagine our day-to-day demands and stresses as rain coming down on us. Most days come with some light drizzle; other times, life brings us a hurricane. I have always thought of self-care as a strong, sturdy umbrella. When skies are

68

sunny, and all is well, it is easier to get by without the umbrella or one that isn’t particularly well made or maintained. When life demands that we keep up, do more, stay alert, focused and in control, though, we need that strong umbrella to get us through the downpour.

and exhausted, it is hard to muster the willpower to get to the gym. When we are overly stressed or worried, we can’t sleep. If despite eating well and exercising daily you feel like life has no meaning or purpose, you certainly won’t be living a successful, happy life.

Each spoke of the umbrella represents one of the five components of self-care: sleep, nutrition, exercise and movement, stress management and “me” time. The spokes are simultaneously co-dependent while impacting one another. If we only focus on one or two of the spokes, the others become weak and non-existent, thereby making the umbrella impracticable when we really need its coverage.

Most people have busy, complicated lives in which they are desperately trying to balance many roles and many responsibilities. And let’s face it, we would like some time and energy left to enjoy our friends, family, hobbies and leisurely pursuits.

For instance, when we are lacking in sleep

How in the world will we have enough energy to do it all and do it well? We need to always have a sturdy umbrella keeping us strong and protected. Self-care is that umbrella.

Steps to Smarter Self-Care

Adding self-care to your routine can be as easy as being mindful in your day-to-day and making small changes. Start with some of these easy-to-implement ideas:

Eat often and eat light. Do your best not to go more than three to four hours in between meals or snacks.

Take frequent movement breaks while working. If you easily get bogged down by work, set an alert to remember to get up, stretch, move and drink water every 60 to 90 minutes.

X Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, with every meal and sip often throughout the day.

X Schedule exercise on the calendar and treat it with the same importance as any other business or personal appointment.

X

X X

If possible, always take a lunch break away from your work and technology. Enjoy the break, the food and the chance to recharge before your productive afternoon.

X X

Calm your daily life. Stop multitasking, put boundaries around technology and minimize distractions when working.

X Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Stick to a consistent bedtime routine, and power down your electronics at least an hour before bed.

Try deep breathing, journaling, meditation or yoga to calm and strengthen the mind. Build your personal stress management toolbox.

Aim for a minimum of 10 to 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. Breaking it up into shorter intervals is just as beneficial.

Schedule “me-time.” At least once a week put something on the calendar that is just for you. Get your nails done, curl up with a good book, go out for dinner with a friend. Doing something just because it makes you happy will rejuvenate and give you the energy to give back with an open heart to everyone and everything that demands your attention for the rest of the week.

X

The next time the skies get dark, the wind begins to blow and you feel certain the storms are rolling in, fear not. By incorporating self-care into your routine, you can rest easy knowing that you are well prepared to handle whatever rains down. Just open your sturdy self-care umbrella and you’ll be well protected. Ellen Goldman is a Health and Wellness Coach at Sparkpeople.com

Cape Town

Africa’s Golden City BEAUTY INFLUENCER SABRINE AND LIFESTYLE INFLUENCER NTANDO BOTH VISIT THE BREATHTAKING CITY OF CAPE TOWN IN SOUTH AFRICA AND BRING YOU THE TOP ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT, THE BEST PLACE TO STAY, AND KEY INFORMATION THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO.

TRAVEL BUG

You really can’t overstate the case for visiting Cape Town. First, there’s the in-your-face beauty of a rugged mountain range that drops precipitously into a glittering sea, and the city is carpeted in greens, forestry and delicate florals – it is truly the darling of Africa.

Sabrine’s Must-Do’s:

Getting Around

Table Mountain

If you love nature and amazing views then you are in for a breathtaking moments at Table Mountain – a number one must on your to do list whilst in Cape Town. The view on top is magical and surreal. Making you forget about the busy world for a moment, as time seems to stand still. The flat top is reachable by cableway but if you have enough energy you can also climb the mountain – which can take anywhere between 1-6hrs depending on the numerous routes.

To travel around Cape Town I would highly suggest renting a car and driving yourself around. Not only is this cost effective but also allows you the freedom of going when and where you want, allowing for pit stops so to have impromptu photo shoots at the many idyllic and breathtaking viewpoints. Even though roads are well marked it is advisable to have a GPS. There are City Tour buses if you would like to see all the main attractions with the most efficiency as well as public transportation buses - however not the most convenient whilst sight seeing.

Boulders Beach

If you love penguins and beaches you should definitely visit Boulders Beach, which is located in Simon’s Town. It is a sheltered beach and it is here where you will find the colony of penguins that have settled there since 1982. There are boardwalks for visitors that are within a few meters from the African penguins.

Before you leave Cape Town, you’ve gotta try this…

Lion’s Head

If you love climbing mountains and want a more rewarding approach in earning the views then try out he most climbed peak: Lion’s Head. It’s adventurous but also very fun! It took me an hour and half to reach at the top, which calculated to be 699 meters above sea level. Once you have reached the top, the views makes it all worth the while, plus the sense of achievement, fitness is an added satisfaction.

Find yourself a BRAAI! Braaing is one of the few things in South Africa that cuts through cultural and racial lines. Regardless of language, race, or culture, the love of meat cooked over a wood fire is something that all South Africans share. It really is a South-African tradition.

Paragliding

Why Cape Town?

Have you ever tried to do something really adventurous? Paragliding is such a fun experience. For a few minutes it feels like time stops and you just enjoy this awesome moment while flying in the air. You can see the whole city under your feet, and so a great way to see the Mother City like never before. Once you’ve landed you want to go book another appointment!

Don’t let the flight time throw you off -Doha-Cape Town roughly under 10hrs, and the return leg can reach up to 11hrs – so if you’re willing to muscle through the flight, not only does your Riyal go an especially long way, but it’s also one of the most beautiful places in the world, surrounded by some of the nicest (and dare we say) also some of the most beautiful people you can come across.

Bo-Kaap

A vibrant, colourful and all together seemingly happy neighbourhood where the alternating rows of vivid houses will definitely put a big smile on your face. Blues, purples, oranges, pinks, greens and anything else you can imagine, is simply a joyous rainbow. The people living in these houses are friendly and always happy to see tourists strolling down their colorful street, enjoying the beauty of their city.

Where To Stay Unfurling the plush POD Camps Bay houses some of the city’s most extravagant jewels in hospitality. None surpassing the magnificent Pod Boutique Hotel. This gem which is nestled in the heart of Camps Bay - a few feet from the glorious shores of Camps Bay beach - completely stole my heart. From the outside the hotel appears to be just another distinguished mansion in this magnificent suburb. On entry I was greeted by the young (and overtly handsome) butler of the manor. Welcome drinks were served on the pool deck overlooking the sandy beach and clear blue ocean. It was refreshing to be able to select my own beverage from the bar menu as my welcome drink, as opposed to the standard miniature glass offering of green juice of many lobbies across the world. I opted for a decadent vanilla latte with cinnamon while enjoying the view and checking into the deluxe suite. It’s not often that a hotel’s deluxe suite resembles my actual dream bedroom. Usually the hotel is ultra modern and doesn’t have the comforting cosiness of home, or a little outdated without the glossy touches of fresh sparkle. Pod Boutique Hotel however, manages to capture crisp clean marble lines to brighten the rooms and a fresh wooden sophistication to soften the space as well as plush, chic furniture in the designs of each room. My splendid deluxe suite was tucked into the corner of the first floor, with an ocean view through the wall-length windows as well as a mountain view from the balcony. The king-size bed at the centre of the room overlooks the open plan lounge and dressing room with an ample closet area. A slight wall enclosure gives a hint of privacy in the open plan bathroom with dual rain showers and a more than inviting bathtub. It’s the type of room you cannot wait to get home to after a day of exploring beautiful Cape Town. At sunset, which falls at around 19h30 during the Cape Town summer, the hotel offers delicious canapés and drinks on the pool deck. I haven’t mentioned the extremely helpful staff who were available to assist with all my requirements at any time of day. And by sunset I had noticed that all of them appear to be recruited from a modelling agency (you’ll remember the butler from earlier). Waking up to the magnificent view really is a pleasant way to start your day. But coming down to the intimate breakfast is the delicious cherry on top. It’s an international breakfast spread with a la carte options and a few uniquely South African dishes. It’s safe to say, Pod Boutique Hotel is the type of place you don’t look forward to leaving. Not just because nobody wants to leave breath-taking Cape Town - but because this decadent hotel feels like home. And honestly, if I could choose a hotel to base my home’s luxurious design on, it would Pod Boutique, from ceiling to floor.

WANDERLUST DINING

The Lowdown

Perched Cliffside, with an exquisite 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean in Uluwatu is where you will find El Kabron resturant. The centerpiece of this spectacular location is their turquoise infinity pool, which is surrounded by comfortable sun beds and a warm breeze. As you munch on imported Spanish cheeses and cured meats you slowly feel yourself relaxing to the easy-going music and truly feeling like a VIP.

The Menu

From the Tapas: Picadillo De Pulpo – Steamed octopus served cold, in a salad with bell peppers & onions. This dish was not particularly as exciting as it sounded; it was ok, so not entirely something I would order again. Dish Ibérico – Served with toasted bread that is topped with tomato and olive oil. An extremely delicious dry-cured meat with a bit of spice! Cheese Board – Selection of Spanish Cheese Manchego, Oveja Al Romero, Idiazabal, Valdeon Blue Cheese. A must have accompaniment with the ibérico meat or a glass of traditional Spanish drink! An absolutely sensational cheese platter. Croquetas De Marisco – Crab and Lobster Croquettes. A cheesy seafood filled crispy croquette is an ideal snack while your laying by the pool. These ones will definitely leave your taste buds craving for more. Bombas De La Barceloneta – Meat and potato fried balls with spicy sauce “Barcelona Style” An explosion of flavour in one little ball… Truly the best type of croquette I have ever had! A must order from El Kabron. And from the ‘Dining Room’ – the must to orders are… Arroz Al Horno De Gambas – Paella topped with jumbo prawns, clams and baby squid. Minimum 2 per persons. Allow 25 minutes for cooking. El Kabron’s unique version of Paella is the best I’ve ever had! Everything was fresh and extremely full of flavour. Well-cooked rice and one of the main reasons to go to El Kabron! Catalunya “Crema Catalana” – Vanilla and cinnamon Catalan custard topped with caramelised sugar. Mmhhhmm! Very well done…the top was caramelised perfectly like a sweet chard of glass and the custard had a beautiful creamy texture. A great way to end the day!

The Roundup

FIND IT

I must admit, the restaurant wasn’t exactly easy to find and it definitely took time to get there, but boy was El Kabron worth the trip! So good, in fact, that I decided to spend two full days there on my one-week vacation. So be sure to treat yourself and indulge on superb Spanish tapas, refreshing drinks, a cooling infinity pool and an unbeatable sunset. And a tip… book your sun bed and/or table in advance because they get very busy! Arrive at midday, enjoy the tapas, stay for the sunset and conclude with a fabulous Paella in the dining room.
