FILM IN FOCUS

A HEATED ROMANCE ATOP SNOWY PEAKS WHAT IF A PLANE CRASH – ONE OF THE MOST TERRIFYING INCIDENTS IMAGINABLE, CAN ACTUALLY LEAD TO AN UNFORESEEN BLOSSOMING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SURVIVORS? ‘THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US’ DEPICTS THE ULTIMATE SURVIVAL LOVE STORY, AND BEING STRANDED ON A GLACIER IS ONE SURE WAY TO BREAK THE ICE BETWEEN STRANGERS (PUN MOST CERTAINLY INTENDED). Shooting a romance survival film that unfolds in the teeth-chattering temperature of -36 degrees weather — yes, that was negative thirty-six — will definitely separate the men from the boys and in this case main cast of Idris Elba and Kate Winslet delivers a steamy enough performance to leave audiences glued in to each and every action cut. Charles Martin’s thriller novel about two strangers trapped thousands of feet above civilization after a devastating plane crash, is adapted and directed into an action picture by Hany Abu-Assad, who is known to have commented, “On certain days, I couldn’t move my mouth,” he says, laughing. “My muscles in my face were frozen.” The 20th Century Fox distributed movie was originally premiered just last month at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and received raving accolade for the ‘deep and meaningful’ interaction between the two protagonists. Surgeon Ben Payne (Idris Elba) and successful writer Ashley Knox (Kate Winslet) survive a devastating plane crash in the mountains where they are forced to band together, trust one another and find safety while badly injured. Ben, with broken ribs, and Ashley, with a terrible leg fracture, must work together to weather the elements and escape the unforgiving wilderness. Throughout their struggle, they learn more about each other and begin to fall in love. If this film, A) does not leave you thanking your lucky stars for the desert heat, and B) leaves your heart feeling all warm and fuzzy, then you have not been watching the same film as us! The Mountain Between Us is a sure must watch movie this fall.

Director: Hany Abu-Assad | Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama Cast: Idris Elba, Kate Winslet, Dermot Mulroney | Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar on October 6th QH Fun Fact: Based on the 2010 novel by Charles Martin

THE

FRUGAL

CELEBRITY FEATURE

Q: Michael, you continue to enjoy a very active and interesting career. You also like working a lot. Is it hard for you to turn down a good project?

perspective and you’re constantly noticing certain things about your performance, which you like, and a lot of things you don’t like and wish you could have redone. Then the second time I see it I’m able to relax more and I try to appreciate the film as a whole.

Fassbender: I find it very hard. You can’t predict what’s coming down the road so if I have the chance to be part of an interesting story it’s hard for me to say no.

Q: Most actors say that observing other people is one of the keys to developing your craft. You spent several years working as a bartender, which must have given you ample opportunity to study human behaviour?

Q: Does some of that have to do with your early struggles to find work in your twenties? Fassbender: It’s something that stays in the back of your mind.

I love acting and from the age of 17 when I first got started in this business, until I was 27 I couldn’t find any work! So when a good project winds up in my lap my instinct is to take it. I have an enormous appetite for work and over a three-year period I made ten films without having much of a break in between. I can always take some time off later if I need to and I have done that.

Q: What do you do when you’re not working, do you have a routine? Fassbender: I love to travel. I love indulging in things like riding motorcycles and lately I’m trying to become better at surfing, which I enjoy although I’ve decided not to ride waves that are higher than I am. Otherwise I’m pretty lazy when I’m not on a set. I’m not very attentive to details and doing things like remembering to pay bills and looking after my house.

Q: Does your dedication to work also have something to do with your competitive nature?

Fassbender: It was a great way of studying people’s characters. If

you want to be good at bartending, you need to be able to listen and engage with people in a very real way. It’s almost like being a priest because often you will have customers sit at the bar and use that time to tell you things that are very personal because they need to unwind and talk about their lives. I worked at a bar which was right in the middle of an area with lots of offices and after work these businessmen would come in and at first you would see their more formal sides but after several drinks and a few hours have gone their true personalities began to emerge. As a bartender you learn a lot about human psychology. You meet all types.

Q: Do you have any nostalgic regard for your time as a bartender? Fassbender: No! It was a job that allowed me to survive and that was it, really. It was a frustrating time more than anything else because I kept wondering how long would I have to keep doing it until I can start earning my living as an actor. That was the only thing that mattered to me.

Fassbender: I like to push myself. I’m very passionate about acting and I think having a healthy sense ambition keeps you moving forward in life. When I was 18, I directed a stage version of Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” which my friends worked on with me. We did it out of pure love and artistic inspiration. I still feel the same kind of spirit when it comes to my work today.

Q: You’ve said in the past that you don’t really like talking about the acting process itself ? Fassbender: I don’t find that there’s anything that special you can say about the work itself. When I start preparing for a role, I lock myself in my flat and read as much as I can and do whatever research I think might be necessary to help me in playing the character. I try to look for different things that are going to inspire me and add some layers to it. Afterwards, once the film is finished. What can you say about your work? It’s not really for the artist or the actor to talk about the work - it’s not going to change your reaction to the work. That’s why I often find it difficult to answer certain questions because once the film is over it’s really up to the public to analyse it and react to it.

Q: Many actors refuse to see their films once they’ve finished working on them. Do you watch your own movies? Fassbender: I usually see each of my films twice. The first time is always the most difficult. You see everything from a very technical 15

EVEN AS ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS, MICHAEL FASSBENDER STILL MAINTAINS A VERY LOW PROFILE. THE 40-YEAR-OLD STILL LIVES IN THE SAME HACKNEY FLAT HE BOUGHT OVER A DECADE AGO - ALTHOUGH HE’S PLANNING ON FINDING A NEW PLACE - AND HE WOULD RATHER GET AROUND IN A MOTORCYCLE THAN MAKE HIS WAY THROUGH TRAFFIC IN LONDON OR L.A. CULTURE FEATURE

Urban Art ARTIST DIMITRIJE BUGARSKI KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT URBAN ART. THE GRAFFITI AFICIONADO GIVES QH AN INSIGHT ON HIS LATEST PROJECTS, ART IN DOHA, AND WHO WE SHOULD BE FOLLOWING FOR THE NEXT BIG ART BANG. PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AMMAR ALQAMASH

Q: How did you get into the graffiti/art world?

I started first in high school with couple of friends, but it didn’t last long. I picked it back up only 2 years ago here in Qatar when I met some local artists and decided to go back to what I really love.

Q: Is graffiti and art a hobby, or your full-time job?

It is something I do during off hours and it’s more than just a hobby. I’m an architect during the day.

Q: What’s your favuorite artsy spot in Qatar?

My favourite spot would be Salwa Road next to Nissan showroom. Other than that, Fire Station gives a really good industrial vibe calling all graffiti artists to “ruin” its walls.

Q: One art venue you think is worth the hype in the city?

Again I would have to say Fire Station. I do think QF is not being used enough as it has such a great potential; hopefully after the roads are easier to access more people will be ready to spend time there.

18

CULTURE FEATURE Q: You were recently working in a cool graffiti project – can you tell us more about it?

The location of the graffiti project is next to Aspire Park and it’s a former driving school. The owner’s plan is to transform the place to an entertainment hub with food trucks, karting, and outdoor drive-in cinema, so they gave us the task to paint the perimeter of the plot, which is 1600m of wall and give the place that urban vibe. The main theme is of course traffic and cars.

Q: How long did this project last for and how long were you involved in? This project is still ongoing. We started first week of July and will be complete by the end of October. I was in from the very beginning and will be involved until it’s finished.

Q: Future projects you’ll be involved in to go and check it out?

Right now we finished another big project at the Fire Station, which is related to the 100 days of blockade of Qatar and we tried reflecting it though art. For other projects we will keep you updated through social media.

Q: Favourite city to visit?

This is the hardest question so far! I would have to say Rio de Janeiro (cliché). And Tokyo being on my bucket list.

Q: What is your opinion on Doha’s art scene?

I think there are positive things and desire to progress in most of it, with bigger things to come. What I’ve noticed is people really taking interest in the graffiti scene, which it’s still building up and new to many. So as long as there are new and innovative things rising, I think more and more people will be involved. Especially among young people – who I mostly encounter with – there is appreciation of art and also desire to express through art.

Q: Favourite artist in Qatar that we must know about? Mubarak Al Malik and Thamer Aldossari.

and His New Historical Fiction OXFORD-EDUCATED ARABIST, WRITER, TRAVELLER AND LECTURER IS BACK WITH A PHENOMENAL HISTORICAL FICTION, BLOODSTONE. WE ASKED THE BBC PERSONALITY ABOUT HIS TRAVELING ADVENTURES, WRITING AND THE BOOK OF COURSE.

I looked more into the surrounding history, I saw how utterly unexpectable the whole historical setting of the stone is: how the Muslim sultan of Granada and the Christian king of Castile were, in their strange way, mates.

Q: Why and when did you decide to become a travel writer? A: I’ve written creatively almost since I could first shape letters, and writing and travel are in the blood. One of my grandfathers was a poet; he wandered and worked his way round the American Wild West in the 1880s. A branch of the family lives an Out-Of-Africa life in Malawi. So I don’t think you ‘decide to become’; rather, you realize you are.

Q: In your opinion, is the book particularly relevant at this time? Why or why not?

Q: How many years have your worked as a travel writer? A: I chucked the job-with-the-salary in 1992. By the way, ‘travel writing’ is a bit confining. It makes one think of guidebooks, which is certainly not what I’m about. What I’ve always written is a blend of travel and history in the tradition of writers like Norman Douglas and Patrick Leigh Fermor. I think I don’t write about travel so much as about time.

Q: Describe a unique/memorable experience during your career as a travel writer?

Book available at FNAC bookstores

A: Hard to choose; there are thousands. I could possibly single out tracking down the exact spot where Ibn Battutah saw a widow burn herself to death in the wild west of India – and realizing that the rocks still had scorch marks . . .

Q: What do you hope to achieve by having the book published? A: I hope to spread a bit of ‘lust and lore’, as medieval English writers used to put it: fun, with a feeling of discovery. And – of course – I hope to achieve sales: ‘No man but a blockhead,’ as Samuel Johnson said, ‘ever wrote, except for money.’

Q: What was your favourite region to travel to and why? A: Again hard to choose, but I think Sri Lanka.

Q: What inspired you to become a fiction writer? A: Partly a big-headed wish to fill in some gaps in history. Partly because I thought it would be fun (it is).

Q: What inspired you to write about the Middle East/Norther Africa region? A: I suppose it was learning Arabic, finding myself in the region where it’s spoken and written, and then living there for over a third of a century, as I still do.

20

A: The book wasn’t written to convey a message, but to tell a story. The story of the stone, of course. But also the story of an entertaining but very vulnerable older man (Abu Abdallah) falling in love with a brilliant younger woman (Lubna), who herself falls in love with Abu Abdallah’s slave (Sinan) – whom Abu Abdallah, in turn, loves to bits as the surrogate of the son he has never had . . . So there’s a triangle of conflicting loves, and such triangles are eternal and relevant for all time. Between the lines there may be messages about the dangers of extremism, of whatever sort; but these are not the point of the book. The point is the triple one – of that triangle, of the love-hate-love between sultan and king, and of the stone.

Q: Where did you get the idea for the book Bloodstone? Is the Bloodstone a real historical artifact? A: The idea came from the ‘Bloodstone’ itself, which is an absolutely real, visible, tangible, historical object, usually known as ‘The Black Prince’s Ruby’. It’s a 170-carat balas ruby (aka a spinel) and is set in the crown worn by British monarchs at their coronation. You can go and see it in the Tower of London. I was fascinated by the way it had got there from the sultan’s vaults in Granada, Spain. Then, when

Q: Do you plan to continue to write historical fiction novels? Any more about the adventures of Abu Abdullah? Abu Abdallah has a whole saga of adventures in my head. If people want to read them, I will write them down. Besides, I want to discover more about the real star of the stories, Sinan, the slave/son with a dark past on the banks of the Niger, and I can only find that out through writing: he has no plot; he only reveals himself in glimpses. I am also too fond of Lubna, the brilliant, beautiful poet, to leave her behind. Their road leads to Egypt, India, China. If readers want to, they can come along too.

BEAUTY TALK

SHOULD YOU

Make the Switch?

T

here’s no lie that we’re constantly bombarded – whether it’s good or bad – with the next big thing; the next big trend; and what we should be buying now in the beauty department. Whether you need the ultimate long-lasting foundation for oily skin, or perhaps the best matte liquid lipstick, the beauty market is packed with brands, which often offer toxic ingredients that are damaging to our skin.

WITH A MYRIAD OF MAKEUP BRANDS IN THE MARKET, CHOOSING AND DECIDING WHAT FITS OUR SKIN GETS TRICKIER BY THE MINUTE. FIND THE BENEFITS ON ORGANIC COSMETICS AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE SWITCHING NOW.

Here are 5 reasons why organic makeup is the new trend:

1

Eco Friendly and Chemical-Free

Normal makeup brands use petroleum-based ingredients and chemicals in their production process. Why? To make them last longer and to improve appearance. However, these ingredients on the long run are damaging to the skin as they contain harsh substances such as: aluminum and lead causing irritation and allergies. But the good thing is that organic makeup is chemical-free promoting healthy looking skin rich with natural ingredients.

Organic Makeup is Suitable for All Skin Types

This is perhaps our favourite benefit with natural cosmetics: they’re all great for any skin type in particular for sensitive and atopic skins.

Natural Fragrance

With cocoa butter as one of its leading ingredients, it also provides nutrient-rich oils for a smoother and youthful look. Some organic brands add white tea, apricots, and pomegranate seeds that also help with the skin’s elasticity.

5

Anti-Ageing Components

Ladies who are looking for anti-ageing products, this is for you! Regular cosmetic brands carry chemicals, fillers and artificial colours (that can cause allergies), which can cause the skin to age quickly. However, with natural cosmetics its organic ingredients not only carries antioxidants to help anti-ageing, but also, they nourish the skin.

orn and raised in Greece, Chef Konstantinos tells of how he knew from a young age that he was destined to work within the field of hospitality, and in particular to “make magic in the kitchen.” In the fall of 2011, Chef Konstantinos moved to Doha, where his journey with the InterContinental family started, to which 5 years later he took over the position of Executive Chef at InterContinental Doha The City, where he now manages a total of 8 dining concepts, including award-winning restaurants, such as The Square.

When did you know you wanted to be a chef ?

My family were my inspiration. My father in particular, who worked on cruise ships used to describe to me all the finest details such as the silver ware, the crystal ware and the fine drinks served, so I could picture all these in my mind. This made me imagine how I could create one day such moments for my own guests and how to give them all that in an exciting and culinary way. I have always been creative and culinary work gives me the opportunity to express myself. From nouveau to conceptual – it is always changing.

great inspiration for me – she gives me good guidance as she has travelled a lot and lived in different countries – and she is very particular!

As a newly appointed Executive Chef, what has been a new dish you’ve introduced at The Square?

Three simple things to remember: firstly, there is never any need to compare yourself with anyone else – enjoy yourself and have fun. Secondly, be patient and don’t just try something just the once, try it lots of times until you reach your own level of satisfaction. And thirdly, you need good company! But on the flip side, it’s also good at times to isolate yourself so to be focused when you are creating your masterpiece!

Taco’s stuffed with sushi rice! I have combined Asian, Japanese, Peruvian and Mexican influences – and this dish can be enjoyed every Wednesday once this is on the menu.

It has to be Italian memories – with homestyle cooking when you feel the warmth. Food should not just be artistic – it’s not just for a pinterest photograph – it must be hearty and full of home flavours. My wife is also a

What is your favourite food memory?

It has to be during the vacations I spent with my family at their summer house. My auntie would cook big meals – roast lamb with rosemary and garlic served with potatoes or pasta with apricot marmalade. These moments helped to cement my passion for cooking, as I would want to also one day serve up meals for the masses.

Where were you trained and how gruelling was it?

I trained in Athens where I worked and studied for four years – from 6am in the morning until 1am the next morning. I wondered for the first month how I could manage to do it and these long hours were tough. My drive that got me through these times, was my sheer passion and eagerness to get into the kitchen, and to me it was all very worth it.

THE DIET EDIT

The Doorstep Diet

Hunger Factor:

Tried and tested by QH Executive Editor, Harriet Gyamfuah for a period of 2 months.

Amazon Diet Medical Center seeks to provide the highest quality in fresh, healthy food that are delivered direct to your door, so taking all of the hassle out of planning and preparing daily nutritious meals. You just simply need to choose out of 180 western and eastern food categories from your preferred monthly menu; both salty and sweet, and these are prepared in healthy ways and more importantly calculated in calories according to your body weight, measurements and fat percentage.

Depending on whether you are looking to lose or gain weight, the boxes will contain well-balanced and proportioned meals. And if it is the weight loss journey you are on, then without a question of doubt, the first couple of days - to a week you may experience hunger pangs; especially if you are someone who is used to eating, how to put it… ‘happy-happy-sized-portions’. Allow your self to get over and push through that period, as what subsequently follows is the realization that your stomach has shrunk and therefore the quantity of the meals are more than enough! Shockingly, at times you may not even get through the whole box – true story!

The Nerdy Part:

Logistical Ease:

What’s The Deal?

Whether it is to your home, work, gym, and park corner – you name it, Amazon Diet Medical Center will ensure to deliver your daily boxes. You can choose to have one cheat day, so therefore the box will not be delivered to you – so go forth and have that slice of full fat tiramisu (but I know you will regret it!)

Calories are estimated according to the needs of each person, such as: normal active person, athletic man/woman, body builders, pregnant women, the elderly, children, people with special needs and all health cases. The calories range between 900 to 2000, according to each case, the proportions are distributed as recommended ratios (15% fat, 25% Protein, 60% carbohydrates) Rates can be changed to match each individual case. There are daily choices suitability for all, such as vegetarians, seafood lovers, vegan etc. So it’s a winner for all!

Results:

Taste Tester:

Every day a complete box will be delivered to you, containing the 3 main meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner, with 2 snacks (fruit and dessert), this way you should be wanting for nothing. One word for the contents of the box: DE-LI-CIOUS! When healthy eating is inclusive of salmon tagliatelle, chicken biryani, cheesecake and apple crumble, just to name a tasty few, you begin to realize how easy this healthy eating ‘diet’ has become. Each day feels like a festive holiday, where you are excited to open up the box to find out what lovely edible gifts have been bestowed upon you. And, sincerely, each day for the two months, not one single day was a disappointment.

You are estimated to lose between 1-2kg per week. Yes, that is NOT a typo, and sure you can re-read that line again. Even without working out, the weight is predicated to drop off - and most of it being body fat. With the first week weigh-in resulting in a whopping lost of 4kg – half of that being body fat, you can be certain that the predictions will leave you dumfounded. Ok, let’s be 100% honest here. It is not just the fact that the weight (and body fat) will drop off, which will make you want to be on this eating plan with Amazon Diet Medical Center; it boils down to how awesomely tasty the meals are, added to the certainty that you no longer have to ponder on that daily question “what do I eat today?” These factors make Amazon Diet Medical Center boxes so worth every single riyal, and let me tell you I am sad to have to start prepping and cooking my own meals again, as this meal delivery service really does do all the hard work for you!

ACTIVE MIND

Dr Philip Zimbardo

What Would You Do? CHARTERED PSYCHOLOGIST, MARTYN STEWART, POSES A QUESTION THAT WE’VE ALL PONDERED AT SOME POINT. HAVE YOU EVER FOUND YOURSELF IN A SITUATION DOING SOMETHING YOU NEVER IMAGINED YOURSELF CAPABLE OF? SOMETHING THAT DISRUPTED YOUR PERSONAL VALUE AND BELIEF STRUCTURE, SO MUCH, THAT YOU WERE FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGED FOREVER – AND THERE’S NO GOING BACK?

58

Dr Philip Zimbardo is a master of coercing yourself to ask this very question. We’re confident that we know how we’d handle the majority of difficult social situations. Sometimes, it is a product of our hubris powered youthfulness, about how much we’ve learned. Then, as we get a little older, we can’t even imagine that such a line of thinking was even plausible. Time is a funny thing! Are your thoughts trapped in the past; frozen in the present or projected into future opportunities? Do you plan ahead for endlessly impending ‘possibilities’ or do you clutch old possessions and rekindle photograph memories to dictate your current behaviour? Who’s the dreamer here? The one reaching for something that might never be or the one reaching for something that’s never coming back? Some of us, call ourselves ‘shy’ in public. However, in the company of people who make us feel we can be ourselves; without judgement, ridicule or the need to be defensive, we suddenly shed the skin of bashfulness. We might not even recognise our own words or behaviour. How can we call ourselves ‘shy’, if our behaviour is situation specific? Do we really know ourselves?

So, it is understandable that theoretical questions can be difficult to imagine or even seem pointless. Nevertheless, when it comes to human behaviour, anything is possible. Imagine this ‘impossible’ scenario… After an accident, (precariously perched over a cliff), in each hand, you hold one parent, (your best friend in life), and your child, (your first born). You love them both equally - if that is possible. You do not have the strength to pull them both up, however, you will not let them both fall either. For a moment, you contemplate sacrificing yourself with them; believing this to be a selfless act – but it is more selfish than you can imagine. Perception is reality remember. There is no such thing as an altruistic act.

Do you know yourself or do you just think you do? About Martyn Stewart: A chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society, international educator, author, coach, consultant and motivational speaker. For more info visit: www.passareuk.com / info@passareuk.com / @findasolutionuk

Dr Zimbardo will be at the ASPIRE Psychology Conference on 18th and 19th October at Doha College. He will deliver a ‘Growth Mindset’ training workshop and give a lecture on all the ground-breaking career research. For more information: www.passareuk.com/zimbardo

We all know the moral decision to make here. But this isn’t a moral situation. It’s personal. And, no matter what anybody says it is all about you and your decisions. Are you evil and selfish for your decision or are you a hero? Is it possible to even say what you will do if don’t know yourself? Can you say you will never be the hero if your qualities haven’t been put to the test? The entire career of Dr Philip Zimbardo encapsulates all of these questions and more. From his research into shyness; how good people turn evil; the time paradox; why boys are failing in school to the most infamous study ever conducted into human social behaviour. The Stanford Prison experiment.

Everything we learn and are taught throughout our lives can mould us into a ‘champion of good’. Helping people everywhere in both our personal and professional lives. However, are you only as good as the world allows you to be? Only able to be ‘yourself’ within the rules and boundaries of the social melting pot you find yourself cooking in? How much do we really know about ourselves? We swing back and forth - in marvel and disgust - at the actions of TV characters such as Cercei Lannister, Frank Underwood, Yvonne ‘Vee’ Parker and Negan. The things they are capable of doing, we could never be the same… could we? When we’re happy, we think we know ourselves pretty well and what we are capable of; until fear, anger and sadness show up unannounced at our front door. We could be surrounded by a house made of mirrors and not recognise the face staring back. Some of you know exactly what I’m talking about, having lived through traumatic life experiences, where nothing is real but perception. Others, have been more fortunate in avoiding such trauma thus far.

TOUCHES OF LUXURY 64

POLLY (WWW.FOLLOWYOURSUNSHINE.ME) WAS RECENTLY INVITED TO THE ST. REGIS DOHA FOR A LUXURY BIRTHDAY STAYCATION. READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT SHE GOT UP TO WITH HER FAMILY DURING A WEEKEND AT ONE OF THE REGION’S MOST ICONIC HOTELS.

Earlier this year the St. Regis hotel celebrated its fifth anniversary, and five years of outstanding hospitality which has set the standard for other hotels in the country and the Middle East. It was my birthday weekend, and I was excited to be celebrating in this unique setting on the shores of the Persian Gulf alongside my husband and our toddler. The opulent, marbled lobby and warm welcome from our personal Butler set the tone for what we were to expect throughout our stay; a stay which took us on an exciting culinary journey and led us to complete and utter relaxation. Read on to find out my highlights.

Take a Peek Into Our Room

The suite which we were staying in was decorated in a traditional and timeless style, with elegant touches, such as the ornate bedside lamps and antique furniture. The dressing area and marbled bathroom were typically St. Regis in style, containing plenty of convenient products. Large floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the rooms with light; and soft and cosy furniture, such as the sofas and king sized bed allowed us to snuggle in and really feel at home during our stay. Needless to say, even though a cot was provided, our toddler ended up sleeping in bed with us, but luckily there was plenty of room for three!

Come Dine with Me

One of the most exciting things about this hotel is its restaurants. The highlight of our stay was the Afternoon Tea with TWG at Sarab Lounge, where we were wowed by the knowledge of our tea sommelier, awed by the traditional favourites presented to us in the Caroline Astor Afternoon Tea, and blown away by the culinary prowess displayed in the innovative St. Regis Afternoon Tea, which includes delicious surprises such as Foie Gras Torchon and Confit Duck with Reduced Aged Balsamic. Dinner at Astor Grill, one of my favourite steakhouses in Doha, the exquisite breakfast spread at Vine and world class dining experience during lunch at Opal by Gordon Ramsay provided some memorable moments throughout the weekend.

Touches of Luxury

From Remède Spa, the hotel’s award-winning retreat which includes a hydro pool, steam room, beautician and relaxation room, to the Olympic-sized swimming pool and white sandy beach in the hotel’s grounds, touches of luxury were around every corner to ensure that we felt thoroughly pampered and relaxed by the end of our stay. Our toddler was thrilled by the pool and my husband was impressed by the options available to members at the Health Club. I, on the other hand, enjoyed relaxing in the private pool-side cabanas, with a cooling drink in my hand.

The Round-Up

If you are looking for a luxurious and relaxing retreat, then the St. Regis Doha has so much to offer. The hotel’s exquisite luxury is befitting of any special occasion, and it was the perfect place to celebrate what is sure to be remembered as an exceptional birthday.

KK offers an enviable choice of culinary pleasures from across the world; served in hip restaurants and by street vendors, you may want to linger far longer than you planned. One way to burn off those extra calories is climbing Mt Kinabalu – the highest peak in Sabah’s Crocker Range takes you 4,095m above sea level. Don’t be surprised to start your trek in tropical weather and then find freezing conditions on the summit. Alternatively take an easier and relaxing option and visit the lush Botanical Gardens and the many walks through the jungle in Mt Kinabalu Park.

WANDERLUST DINING

Welcome To The Contagiously

Tasty Mad House KNOWN AS AN ISLAND WHERE THE WONDERFUL, WHIMSICAL, AND WEIRD ALL MEET, WE WOULD SAY BALI IS THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR NEW KID ON THE BLOCK RESTAURANT: MICKY’S MAD HOUSE.

70

WANDERLUST DINING As hipster as it gets, Italian restaurant Micky’s Mad House is perfectly situated in Canggu Berawa – a mere 25min drive from Denpasar airport, and since its opening in June, the restaurant and lounge has had tourists and residents going bonkers over it. And that’s not just because of the lipsmackingly good food, but true to the restaurant’s name, its owner, Micky is what can only be described as ‘passionately nuts’ – which all in all makes for a very entertaining as well as delicious visit.

The Lowdown

Relaxed and unfiltered, Micky’s Mad House was built with “la dolce vita” philosophy in mind. This is none the less evident when you leisurely sway in one of their knitted hammocks whilst chomping on mouthfuls of their homemade (and very authentic) Italian pizza, all the while glancing into the quaint and fairytale-esque garden. Spread over two floors and overlooking green paddy fields, it surely doesn’t get any simpler and idyllic.

FIND IT

The Menu

Let’s start with breakfast, and lets start it off the right way! Even though the menu at Micky’s Mad House is 100% Italian, it is also peppered with international and Balinese offerings, and for breakfast, nothing screams, “I am in Bali” more than a superfood bowl chased with a side helping of chia seed smoothie. No doubt once you have checked off the “eat healthy” box from your Bali checklist, then by mid afternoon it is all systems go for a hearty serving of Italian food as hands down you will not be able to resist the smells the waft from the open kitchen. Aromas of Bolognese sauce that has been lovingly crafted into the most mouthwatering lasagna, or perfectly al dente spaghetti are firm favourites off the menu. The ultimate foodie goal when dining at Micky’s Mad House has to be the opportunity to make your own pizza alongside Micky himself. With the daily droves of children that line up to create their pizza masterpiece

you can be forgiven in thinking that this highlight is for kids only, but with the contagious nature of such a fun filled atmosphere, all guests are made to feel totally welcomed and at home at Micky’s Mad House.

The Roundup

Because of it picturesque décor, Micky’s Mad House is a place that most passerbys casually get drawn into. Then once comfortably seated and there is a chilled drink in hand, they will certainly wonder where time flew to! This restaurant is one of those places that you can happily walk in at lunchtime and find yourself still there at dusk; lying on one of the outdoor grass loungers in a total state of food coma – due to the fact that your taste buds lured you into ordering round two of meals! But don’t worry as no one at Micky’s Mad House is judging you for deferring from your ‘raw-vegan-paleo-clean-eating’ Bali intentions…. as what happens in the madhouse, stays in the madhouse.
