QH features local conservation initiatives for endangered sea turtles and speaks to the hosts of the Doha Green Summit. Bloomsbury shares some tips on how to participate in UN Sponsored World Book Day recognised on April 23rd and the annual Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival is back in town. Finally the event we keep waiting for, the Qatar Marine Festival, hits the shores of Qatar this month. On the sporting scene, the Asian Football Cup Draw Ceremony will take place in Qatar and the Motorcycle Grand Prix speeds things up at the Lusail Circuit. Culture, arts, causes, learning, sport and outdoor fun – it’s a great time to get involved in your community! Enjoy!

QH RECOMMENDS
Hop on down the bunny hole with us on this months magical mystery tour of weird! Holy Gaga
Cop Magnificent
Lady Gaga has mastered the art of WTF-ery and this time she’s dragged Beyonce down to her level and it makes us giddy with delight. In her latest effort ‘Telephone’, the two collaborate on a Sappho-rific video that’s weird but also super catchy. Our world is complete now we’ve heard the phrase ‘you’ve been a very very bad bad girl Gaga’ come out of Beyonce’s mouth (and we’re not even going to address the hairphone, cigarette sunglasses or the ‘lets make a sandwich’ moment. If we do so we might just die of an overdose of awesome). The video is available on YouTube and iTunes.
A product of a magical time known as the 90s, Cop Rock is what happens when Glee meets NYPD Blue and they make sweet snuggles. It’s a crime show... with jazz hands. Who hasn’t thought Law and Order would be much, much better if they burst into song and dance occasionally, especially if it’s done over cadavers and in a taste so bizarre we’re not sure if it’s good or bad, we just know it’s awesome? The television world may have foolishly cancelled it, but the music and the magic live on on YouTube.
Pink, Plastic, and Nerdy
Alice in Weirdland So we all knew we were going to see this one even before it came out. How could you not? An even weirder ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ trip down the rabbit hole, with 3D effects and caramel corn? Sign us up! Johnny Depp is a couple hugs short of a carebear, and we love it. He’s gotten progressively zanier everytime he hits the screen (if Jack Sparrow was mildly psychotic his Mad Hatter needs heavy medication and group hugs), At this point we’re just waiting for him to jump up and down on Oprah’s couch, but regardless, it’s awesome to watch. Check out www.qatarhappening.com for showtimes.
Idiot-awesome The IdiOlympics– a rollicking test where men are men, rats refused to be caught, shopping carts are used to joust, tricycles become part of a live action Mario Kart, and Taco Bell beats them all (proving once again you do not mess with the Gordita Supreme). The guys from Panda Smash compete to figure out who is smart enough to decide this is a bad idea, and more importantly, who was clever enough to put it on the internet (and fill a piñata with mayonnaise). Check out their shenanigans at www.pandasmash.com.
The face that launched a thousand eating disorders is back, this time with a nerd-chic career. Barbie announced her 126th career recently (she’s a busy girl) and, despite declaring that ‘Math class was tough’ in 1992, seems to have picked up a thing or two between shopping trips and pondering if pink goes with pink. She’s now a computer engineer, complete with Bluetooth headset and Smartphone. We’re not sure if we should be supportive or horrified, but either way we’re left wondering what Ken will do to get his oddly-smooth underroos back in the spotlight. We hope it involves glitter.
So it’s been brought to our attention we use the word ‘awesome’ a lot. We think that’s awesome (it’s a marvelous word and we can’t be convinced otherwise). So let’s play a little game: count the awesomes in this magazine and send us a message on Facebook! It’s like Where’s Waldo but with words instead of a cartoon in a stripy sweater. 10 APR 2010b.indd 10

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT
By Elly Cardwell
Water lovers prepare for some excitement – despite being a desert climate, Qatar is about to make a splash with the opening of its first aqua park.
Slated to open its doors soon, the Aqua Park is giving Doha residents a thrill seeking entertainment venue to look forward to. Spread over an area of around 100,000 square metres, the aqua park is located on Salwa Road, just 16 km from Industrial Area roundabout, and adjacent to a 300,000 square meter resort that is also expected to be completed by June 2011. The park, being developed by Hala Group Enterprises and constructed by a Cypriot company, Aqua Masters Qatar, will use seawater turned into freshwater by the enormous power generated from the country’s oil and gas reserve. Featuring such watery delights as a giant wave pool, a lazy river, an activity pool, and a multi slide complex, the park will also have a family pool and a ‘dry’ corner for those who prefer not to get their feet wet.
The park will also have a lagoon pool offering a fusion of fountains, light effects, rock-art works and shaded Jacuzzis, not to mention a peaceful area where you can while away the time between swimming and sliding. Packed with your favourite restaurants and fast food eateries, along green paths that resemble tracks in a rainforest, you can regain your strength and strum up the courage to start your next aqua adventure. If it is indeed adventure you are after but you prefer to stay dry, visit the gaming areas. Including paintball, bicycle motocross (BMX), roller-skating and soap football, this side of the park is sure to keep your blood pumping. If, however, the thought of all that dashing around makes you want to sit down, the lazy river, where concerts, programmes and ceremonies are also planned to be staged, is nestled right in the middle of the park and offers a slightly less frenetic pace.
The wave pool is sure to excite visitors as it generates waves as high as a metre and half, while next to it the children’s activity The new Aqua Park aims to provide some pool will offer numerous entertaining games much needed entertainment for residents, to while away the hours with the kids. Spending time at water parks can be a memorable experience if you take some precautions. Here’s our top tips of how to make it your best experience! Walking around on hot pavement is tough on feet, so buy a cheap pair of waterproof slippers that you can leave on. Waterproof sunscreen is a must because while you’re in line, you’ll be exposed to the sun. And apply it early- sunscreen needs to go on 30 minutes before you go outside. Body slides can have you zipping by quickly, so minimize clothing loss by wearing loose trunks (guys) and one-piece suits (girls). Suits with zippers and buttons scratch flumes, so many parks have banned them. Carry a spare change of clothes with you. Remove non-essentials from your wallet and leave them at home. Do not eat just before going into the water. Keep a gap of at least 30 minutes between your meal and entering the water.

Doha’s a long way from the Ukraine, but the delicate art of pysanky has found a home here!
Basketfull. Edith Schwartz says her eggy babies have a lifetime guarantee: as long as she’s alive, she can make them.

And at the end, eggy magic happens. Pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian art of egg decorating, has been around for centuries. “You can hold the egg up to a candle and Edith Schwartz has been making them in slowly melt the wax off. And that’s the most Doha for around two years. exciting part. Once you’ve done your egg in so many colours you forget what’s going to “Soon after I learned it (I started teaching). be where. But it’s more than just a colourful craft. As She’s taught several classes here in Doha, a traditional handycraft, there’s more than for a nominal fee of around QR 50 per just pretty squiggles being painted on the person (just to cover her supplies). She says eggs. it’s an art form anyone can learn, but it’s definitely a step above dip dying eggs in “Each colour can symbolize something, each food colouring in 2nd grade. geometric design. Each plant and each animal can have a meaning. And But you’re in and out, I usually have two or that’s my husband,” she said. “There are three eggs going at a time. One is sitting many different traditions with eggs. I have in the dye, one is being worked on, one’s eggs here that are story-telling eggs. One drying,” she said. “It’s an egg process that’s friend who is teaching it, she made anger done like batik. would go up in front of that person and stamp on the egg, and that finished the anger.” While most commonly associated with Easter, eggs have been decorated and displayed for centuries, as symbols of rebirth and new life in the spring. Coloured eggs have been exchanged between friends, broken open, chased over lawns (including the White House in the United States) and rolled down hills. Some of the most intricate examples were the Faberge eggs created out of precious metals and gems for the Russian Imperial court, often containing surprises of clockwork toys or trinkets. In Doha, the eggs come in many varieties- from traditional Ukrainian designs to special patterns created for holidays and hung on trees or given as hostess gifts. Schwartz was particularly excited when she discovered a book of traditional Arabic calligraphy patterns for egg decorating- the lines, swoops and swirls being so perfect for this handycraft. “I am not an artistic person in a creative sense. I can follow directions and copy when I need to but some people just take off. When you teach them they just take off and create the most beautiful eggs you can imagine,” she said. “So you’re writing the design on the egg, and as you write you’re writing symbols, symbols of prosperity, symbols of long life, symbols of health or things onto an egg to make the design. You can do anything with an egg!” They’re also preserving a long history of handycrafts. Once upon a time, people knew how to quilt and embroider and paint and create their own homemade fun. Today, these skills are dying: either metaphorically, being replaced by bejeweled, wordmole and sudoku, or literally, in the form of aging Women’s Institutes and social clubs that aren’t being replenished with younger members. “I think it’s very sad,” said Pam Bodle, one of the eggdecorating mavens who attends Schwartz’ classes. “Otherwise they’ll die! Who knows when we’ll need them again? It could be quite soon! And it’s interesting. That’s the fascinating thing.” “It brings out the little child in you,” said Bodle. For more information or to book a class with Schwartz, email BillnEdie@qatar.net.qa.

By Jessica Davey-Quantick
April sees the beginning of the marine turtle nesting period, many of whom use Qatar’s shores as their nursery. This year, the Ras Laffan Industrial City celebrates its 10th year of conservation efforts, helping to keep these natural tourists thriving!
Surfs Up Sea turtles breathe air, but can stay under water for months at a time, due to their advanced evolution allowing them to turn anaerobic when needed. They’re one of the most long-term residents on the planet, dating back millenniums, almost unchanged.
TURTLE-TASTIC! Four different species of marine, or sea, turtles nest in the region: the Green Turtle, the Hawksbill, the Leatherback, and the Olive Ridley, all of which are threatened or endangered. Turtles have the same lifespan as humans, with estimates ranging from 80 to some say as much as 300 years, but they are affected by human activities, particularly when they’re nesting. Turtles are vulnerable to pollution and fishermen, often getting caught in nets, but are also threatened by the value placed on their shells and the leather made from their skin. Turtle meat and turtle eggs have been considered a delicacy all over the world for centuries, and even today people steal eggs from nests to eat. Their nests are particularly threatened: by beach development ruining suitable nesting grounds (turtles are very picky- everything has to be just right for a nest) to natural predators, light pollution drawing baby turtles away from the sea, and even picnickers setting up their bbqs on top of nests!

Rock a bye turtle More than 200 nests are laid each year Qatarwide, with over half falling inside Ras Laffan Industrial City. Exact numbers are still unknown, as mother turtles will dig false nests to confuse predators. Depending on the species, each active nest can contain between 50 and 150 eggs. Turtle gender is dependant on the temperature, with males being born when it’s cooler and females hatching when the weather heats up. After hatching, each baby turtle will dig its way to the surface before running for the water. Despite the large number of eggs, only a small number of hatchlings succeed.
How You Can Help Ras Laffan Industrial City and their partners have set up perimeters and patrols, as well as guidelines and rules to help protect the sea turtles from industry. But there are other things you can do to help as well!
Sea Turtles and Qatar Seven different locations in Qatar have been identified to be sea turtle favourites, with mother turtles returning each year to lay their eggs. To help them out, Ras Laffan Industrial City, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Qatar University have partnered together, along with the companies within Ras Laffan, to protect and develop turtle nesting areas. Ras Laffan has allocated around QR 200 million towards environment – related projects, and QR 4 million over the last three years was utilized to study and protect the turtles in Qatar. Together, they have successfully relocated endangered nests, cleaned up beaches, partnered with industry to reduce light pollution during nesting season, closed beaches during the season to keep vehicles out, and even patrolled the area 24/7 to protect the turtles from poachers. As well, Qatar University has been studying the creatures, tagging and testing their DNA so in the future we’ll better understand one of the oldest creatures on earth.
Obey the marked areas. While many turtles nest within private property, some nest in the large swatches of public beach all over the country. If you see a marked area, obey it– nests can be destroyed by vehicle traffic, light pollution, and your left behind trash. Clean up after yourself. You should do it all the time anyway, but even if there isn’t a marked turtle nesting area, take extra care to clear away all your garbage after that beach bbq. Don’t let things like balloons, plastic bags, or even organic waste stay behind- they can all affect the turtles (not to mention looking gross for the next group of picnickers). Keep it down to a dull roar. Sea turtles can be disturbed and confused by light and sound pollution, especially if they’re newborns. Turn off your lights and keep it quietbabies are hatching! Take part in beach clean-ups and tree planting efforts. Many groups, including Ras Laffan Industrial City, sponsor community clean-ups and planting programs- it’s a great way to give back, all year long. For more information, check out www.raslaffan.com. If you spot a turtle, report it! The RCL-Environmental Section and Qatar University want to know, so give them a call at 473-3444 or 473-3441. 25

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
Let your fingers do the walking. Maryam Yousuf used her twitter account to create art.
By Jessica Davey-Quantick
A poem by any other name would still smell as sweet: QH celebrates Book Month and catches up with the first winner of Bloomsbury’s PoetTweet Slam!
I
just tweeted that I guess this would be the one fun thing, one fun activity that I’d be doing in this hectic day.”
Sitting across from Maryam Yousuf in Education City, she seems like an ordinary Qatari student. Graceful abaya, designer handbag, giant sunglasses, and mobile phone at the ready, which she clicks off as the interview begins. But it’s that phone that set her apart, because it’s what she uses to create magic. She won the Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing’s first PoetTweet Slam: a battle for poetic supremacy on the Twitter playground. She’s an Information Systems student at Carnegie Mellon University, who’s just starting her writing career. And she’s starting with a few clicks on her keypad. “Basically Twitter gives you a 140 character limit. It’s amazing how many thoughts you
can put into this 140 characters!” she said. “I guess this is the twist in Twitter, like how do you cram a poem, a huge thought into 140 characters?” Many people hold up applications like Twitter as the death of language and communication as we know it. Email has long taken the brunt for the stupidification of the written word, as people throw away grammar, spelling and form in favour of punctuation collected together to form a happy face. Or a face sticking its tongue out. SMS and Twitter were soon to follow, their size limitation making it acceptable to forgo punctuation and proper spellings. However, using these applications to create art could actually help invigorate it. Organizers say they wanted to give busy people, who might not have the time to write a full poem, a chance to use what they’re already doing– Tweeting– to create art.

They had around 15 poets participate in the English competition, and six in the Arabic, each submitting multiple poems. What Yousuf says is really special about Twitter poetry is it removes the rules and forms (curse you iambic pentameter), even the requirement to rhyme that makes poetry so difficult for many people, and just allows you to express your thoughts. “I wrote about me entering Carnegie Mellon building. I described myself, what I was wearing, random thoughts I had in my head because we have this long pathway before you enter the college, and in these 60 seconds you walk through it, a million thoughts go through your mind, so I thought of putting them down,” she said. “Basically my every day situation (inspires me). I’m a fan of first impressions about people, I sometimes puts myself in someone else’s shoes and just think about whatever.” It was that image that won her the contest. Twitter is the perfect medium for sharp images that draw you in – poets like T.S. Elliott would probably have a decent number of followers if they were Tweeting instead of writing. And that’s what set her apart, according to judges. And she did it in English. Born and raised in Qatar, her native language is Arabic, which itself has a long history of poetry. “Arabic poetry has another perspective to it. It’s totally different from English poetry. It has so many different rules, strategies you have to work on. You don’t go from being not a poet to being a professional because of a random thought you just put down, it’s different,” she said. “I find it more comfortable when writing in English because I have more audience; I have more people to like talk me through it. As a poet you notice that I talk about my abaya, which is weird that I’m talking about it in English, and English people would be reading it. It’s nice that I’m taking this image and spreading it through my words but using this language to get to people.”

What is it? The Doha Green Summit is the first ever environmental and sustainability seminar ever to be held in Qatar! On April 11th, delegates will come together at the Grand Hyatt to talk, learn, and hear from speakers about what they can do to make their business work for them, and the environment.
QH gets the scoop on what the Doha Green Summit is all about from Vice President of Oryx Advertising, Ravi Raman, one of the partners bringing the summit to Doha!
QH: What is it and why are you doing it? RR: The end goal is first to demystify
sustainability and environmental initiatives. Because let’s face it, what we’re talking about is going back to basics. It should not be so complicated. Point two is to make it simpler to small and medium enterprises, and tell them that it makes smart sense, it makes business sense, to look at sustainability. It’s not something so complicated that you need to have a 100 page report or you need to have a sustainability officer, all those things. The point is to start out with these very smart, simple solutions, which you can implement right now that has a direct impact on the environment.

Why Go Green? When it comes to going green, the business world plays a crucial part. They can help lead the way, by creating green buildings, instituting environmentally sustainable procedures and products, and showing that you can have both a thriving economy and a green future.
Who’s Going to Be There People from all levels of the corporate and business world will be there, but there will also be international, regional and local speakers. On the docket are:
QH: Why is it important? RR: Why is it important? Why is it not
QH: Is sustainability hard to achieve? RR: Sustainability has a lot of areas that
you can focus on. But you look at planet, profit and people: from the small and medium enterprises to the large company, if anyone focuses on these three rings, and tries to bring them together, at any point, whether it’s employee benefits, whether it’s work station or transfer change that effect these three circles, it does bring a result in a long term sustainability. These things cannot be taken in isolation-we’re looking at three factors and bringing them together.
important! See I’ve been asked this a lot, why are you doing this, why are you doing it now. We feel that there’s never any time that’s too early to do something on environment and sustainability. Unlike other economies or societies that are already developed, the infrastructure is already there, and it’s very difficult to change that infrastructure, it has to be rebuilt to make it sustainable or environment friendly or green, in Qatar we have a great opportunity where the construction boom is just happening. So if the awareness happens there at the foundation. This is a fantastic opportunity to build a society that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly. There’s a fantastic opportunity for us to make a difference right now, so that the future generations are aware.”

GET INVOLVED BQFP helped put together the following ideas to help you spread the love of reading
Primary School age children “Shessalfa?” (What’s your story?) Children tell a story of their choice through: reading, writing or simply drawing their favourite character.
Between the Stacks in Doha In honour of World Book Day (WBD), the UNESCO established annual celebration of books and reading across the globe, Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) is carrying out a number of activities the week of April 18 –22, 2010 with the purpose to encourage reading and the love of books in children as well as adults. “This year WBD falls on a Friday hence we thought of extending activities to run over the week to give a greater opportunity to reach more children,” said BQFP Education Program Developer, Amira Abed. “The week promises to be a fun and an informative way of celebrating the love of reading.” BQFP announced their program in January and urged all schools to take part in this national initiative. Five schools stepped forward as ‘anchor’ schools to hold
celebrations for their students across the age groups. Each day of WBD week will highlight two schools in the program. The schools involved this year include: Al Shaqab, Um Salal, the Cambridge School, Al Bayan Educational Complex: Primary, Asmaa Bint Abu Baker, Al Huda, Duhail, Al Borooq Primary, Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Qatar Leadership Academy, and Qatar Academy. On April 12, 2010, to promote a love of reading by adults and university students, BQFP, the QF Central Library and NU-Q will sponsor an author talk and book signing by Leila Aboulela, Sudanese author of Minaret for the general public at Northwestern University in Qatar. For more details on this and other events contact the BQFP Events Team at bqfp.events@qf.org.qa or phone at 454-2431.
Bilingual Storytelling Read a bilingual book such as The Selfish Crocodile in both English and Arabic together.
Preparatory and Secondary School age children Encourage the youngsters you know to dig up attractive stories from their heritage: World, Arabic, Islamic, and share it with someone for whom it may be new.
Across the year groups Sponsor a Book Club Ask friends to get together and read an agreed upon title in the month of April, discussing it the week of April 23rd.

his impression was backed up even more when the waitress appeared with the vino list – a glass, outside a hotel? Delightful on a hot Doha evening!
But the biggest surprise came when the food began to emerge. I don’t know what I was expecting, considering I’m a huge Gordon Ramsay junkie and know his obsession with excellent service and fresh local produce, but the result was stunning. Looking at the menu, the dishes sound incredibly foody and complicated. But when the dishes appear, all is forgiven because of Tartare of Yellow Fin tuna with Ponzu dressing and Avocado Salsa and Terrine of Rougie Fois Gras, Smoked Duck Breast and Confit Leg. No one tell my mother I ate fois gras anything. It’s European cuisine with a local twist– not Arabic, but fresh and new. On the menu is Roasted Shoulder of Lamb with Zaatar, and the Roasted Hammour with Garlic Aioli literally melts like fishy butter on the tongue. On one hand you have the opulence of Australian rib eye, aged 35 days, but you pair it with buttered mash potatoes. It’s gourmet comfort food, and takes ‘family style’ dining to a whole other level. While the place is stunning and the service is so impeccably doting you immediately begin wondering if you are, in fact, the lost Czarina Anastasia, what with all the fawning and intimate attention to your water glass, the food is actually accessible when it arrives. It’s not overdone, it’s just tasty and best of all built for sharing. When the starters arrive, so do the sharing plates and you’re encouraged to swipe bites from your neighbour’s plates and pass morsels of food from fork to fork. Not that you will get the chance of course: my normally mild-mannered dining companions get possessive over last bites, and refuse to share like only children on their first day of kindergarten when dessert arrives. The Maze Black Forest Sundae is good, but the real star that has the three of us salivating and dueling with spoons? The Chocolate Fondant with Salt Caramel Sauce and Peanut Butter ice cream.
Two big, big thumbs up for Maze- we may just have our new favourite restaurant. The only downside? Prices that are a bit high, even for Doha. Starters are around QR 40 each, with mains running from around QR 120 to QR 300. We will still be saving our pennies, breaking our piggy banks, and couch diving for change to go though!
u
Navigating Maze After working with Gordon Ramsay for eight years, Robert Daniels, the resident food expert and Head Chef at Maze Gordon Ramsay, knows a thing or two about what makes good eats. QH picked his brain and gets the full scoop on how to fill your plate at Doha’s latest restaurant!
What’s the food like? RD: The food’s not pretentious by any stretch of the imagination. What we do is we come here with Gordon Ramsay standards and we make it work in an environment. What we found is that they liked lots of food on the table, so we’ve tried to bring that same concept here. So you might have three or four dishes, we set up sharing plates. It’s very conversational; everyone’s tasting this and that. It’s very communal isn’t it? It’s a much more social way of eating, and that’s the Maze concept.”

You said Maze started in London with a tasting menu. What is this tasting menu of which you speak? RD: A tasting menu is smaller sized portions
where you’d eat many different courses– so you’d have a cold starter, a hot starter, a fish, a meat, lots of interesting little things. It’s not like where you eat a starter, main course and dessert, you sometimes get a little bit bored. But (with a tasting menu) you have three or four mouthfuls and think ‘wow that was amazing but it’s finished. I’d love some more.’ And then you’re on to the next course. RD: “No! Because there’s so much local produce. See, coming here all I heard was nightmare stories about importing things from other countries. I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon and start talking about carbon footprints and all that stuff, but of course it’s naive to not keep that in the back of your mind. We came here with the menu written, but it’s different when you actually go to a suppliers warehouse and go ‘oh wow you’ve got this ingredient’, or ‘you’ve got that ingredient’ or ‘I can get this.’ We get fresh lamb, slaughtered here for us, so in that sense it’s a local product. Fish out of the local fish markets, I mean it’s by the ocean, there must be fish around, and there is! There’s huge amounts of local fish and seafood, so a lot of the seafood that we had on was imported, so we’ve scrapped that. We’ve just taken a lot of local fish and redefined the dishes.” So, what’s it like working for Gordon? RD: “He’s a professional. He expects the best at all

times, and if we don’t give him that then we’ll certainly hear about it. It’s his company, it’s his name on the line every day that we open the doors. So if there’s problems then we’ll pay the consequences. But we know what he expects. There’s no middle ground, there’s no grey area, which makes it quite easy: it’s either right or wrong. So we know if we do it the right way in ourselves then he’s going to be happy with that.” 37 3/27/10 11:17:05 AM

Find a good tailor
Al Sadd Street, behind the Royal Plaza, is noted as the hub of tailoring in Doha, however tailors are dotted all over the city. A recommendation is always best. It’s advisable to have a look at other garments he has made to ensure you are happy with the quality. Ask around!
Tailors talents By Patricia Duignan, Fashion Lecturer, VCU-Qatar
Want to get your designer dream at a snip of the price? Head to the fabric souqs! It may seem daunting at first, but fear not, its fun to do. Build on your existing wardrobe and bring it up to style with the latest fashions or play at being a designer customizing your clothes.
Tailors will give most things a try but be aware the results can often vary. Some will delight, some will surprise, some will not be what you bargained for, and it’s all part of the experience. Here are a few tricks to get the best results: • Bring a garment to copy in the correct size; it is easier for a tailor to make a pattern based on original garments. •
Pictures from magazines or catalogues also work but be sure to pick a picture with a clear view of the garment. Full front view is a must, with a back view even better. Google image searches make this a snap!
• Find a tailor who is willing to take your measurements to ensure a better fit. Ask the tailor how much cloth you will need and confirm the fabric width (some cloth widths vary from narrow to wide requiring more or less fabric). • If there are any trims such as zips, buttons or fastenings, ask the tailor if he can get them for you and if not where to go. • It’s a good idea to discuss price especially if you’re up for a good haggle. Prices can vary depending on the tailor and the garment, expect to pay between QR 60 and QR 150 for a dress or up to QR 300 for a two-piece outfit suit. An elaborate evening gown with beading can cost between QR 700 and QR 1,200.

Fabric Souqs
“The trick to getting what you want is in the approach.”
There are a number of souqs selling a wonderful array of fabrics. For that special occasion head to Souq Al Deira. It is famed for its designer end fabrics and the prices reflect this. Cottons from QR 35 to 100, silks from QR 70 to 200 a metre, and the most decorative up to QR 1,000. Look out for Al-Basaeel Textile: they have a fantastic choice of designer cloths including a huge selection from the famous ‘Liberty’ of London. The adjacent Souq Al Aseiry also has a beautiful collection of fabrics which are more moderately priced, cottons from QR 10 to 35, silks from QR 35 to 70. On the opposite side of Grand Hamad Street you will find Souq Waqif, Doha’s oldest Souq housing a number of well priced fabric shops and tailors. There are numerous individual fabric shops dotted around Doha: Dana Centre opposite Souq Al Aseiry and Bombay Silks in Musheirib are definitely worth a look.
Fabulous fabrics
Like a kid in a candy store you’ll be mesmerised by the choice of fabrics on offer to create your dream wardrobe, from beautiful beaded and embroidered evening fabrics, silks, chiffons, crepes and stretch jerseys to lightweight cottons and linens for day in a variety of colours printed and plain. Choosing the correct fabric is the next step to getting the desired effect. When selecting a fabric pick one that has the similar ‘feel’ to the original. If it has a drapy flowing handle, choose something similar, if it has some stretch make sure your choice has stretch too. Shiny silky fabrics tend to work best for special or evening wear, 100% cotton and linen work well for day. Play around with colours to get new effects, mix and match prints. Adding a decorative trim can change the whole look of a garment. To duplicate the hottest summer trends (animal, tropical, tribal, floral) scan your favourite fashion magazines for ideas on colours and prints and bring them along.
APR 2010b.indd 45
THE RIGHT APPROACH
Discuss the garment in detail with your own special requirements. If you want a variation on the original, be sure to make it clear and ask the tailor to make a note of any special details as conversations may be forgotten. No doubt you will want to get a number of things made, however if it is your first time with a tailor start with one garment and get it right. It’s a learning process and sometimes it may take more than one try to get the desired effect. Once ready, try it on in the shop so any alterations required can be discussed. When you are confident that the tailor understands your requirements and has produced something that you are happy with then go for it! You’ll have your own personally designed wardrobe in no time, once you start you’ll become addicted, the instant thrill of buying off the peg will never be the same again – why would it when you can get an original custom made instead!

She runs five or six times a week, and at least once a week she’ll take herself on a private marathon of around 40 km. For most people, this all sounds insane. “Sometimes I do wonder that myself. Why is this particular colour considered to have great healing power? The answer comes from nature itself. Chlorophyll is actually responsible for the green pigmentation in plants. It is vital in many plant metabolic functions such as growth and respiration. It also has anti-oxidant, antiinflammatory and wound-healing properties. That is why we feel good when we add green leafy vegetables to our diet. Nature of Green: Green is a restful colour with some of the same calming attributes of blue. It is the most restful colour for the human eye; it can actually improve vision. Time moves faster in a green room. On the flip side, green is jealousy or envy (green-eyed monster) and inexperience. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money, the financial world, and banking and in the USA, Wall Street.
Using Green: Depending on the undertone, green can have a
warming and cooling effect. Blended with black or blue undertones, the colour green can have a fresh springtime feeling, denoting balance, harmony, and stability. These colours have a cooling effect. Shades that are blended with brown undertones like olive green or sage have a warming effect. These colours are more grounded and practical. They are often used in the military as the colour for uniforms.

Green with brown, tan, or beige says organic or recycled and can be a good colour combination for packaging of those types of products. However, the colour compliment to green is red! So use red, red - orange shades and even brown to add some pizzazz to your green décor. Purple with green can be lively contrast and the very best colour for the patio cushions. Lime green with orange and yellow is a fresh and fruity palette that is zesty and modern.
The more you like green, the more you love to nurture others..
The less you like green,
the more independent you are.
