As we welcome the month of April, we start looking forward to spring and all that comes with it. Although Qatar’s weather might not distinguish much between spring and summer, this season remains a time of fresh flowers and lots of outdoor activities. Here in Doha, there is plenty to do outside while the weather is still refreshing. On the entertainment front, The Big Day Out, a lively desert concert, promises to be a wonderful weekend of great music and good weather. We bring you all the details on this spectacular event. If you prefer to listen to your music indoors, check out the Doha Community Orchestra and DCO Wind Band’s spring concert taking place April 29. We checked in with conductors Brita Fray and Sanford Jones to get the scoop on what it takes to co-ordinate two musical ensembles into one fantastic concert. We also reviewed the best places for outdoor dining in Doha. With plenty of great restaurants with nice outdoor seating at places such as Katara Cultural Village, Souq Waqif and The Pearl-Qatar, it was tough to make our choices but we had an amazing time doing research!

This month, we celebrate the fashion design graduates at VCUQ, who cap off years of hard work with one final show before graduation. We show you a sneak peak of the collections they’ll be presenting at their show and give you some insight into the designers behind the collections. We also take a look at some of the coolest gadgets on the market. Whether they are for the kitchen, bathroom or living room, gadgets continue to make our lives easier while amusing us with their ingenuity. And because product hoarding is common in Qatar, we also look at the glorious resource that is online shopping, a way to get gadgets from all over the world within days. Of course, as we prepare for spring, we are still mindful of everything that is going on in the world right now. As we watch footage of the earthquakes and resulting tsunami in Japan, we are humbled by nature and reminded of how blessed we truly are. We feel very deeply for the people of Japan as they begin their long road to recovery.

Feeling the need to spoil yourself? Try some of our new favourite things.
Wonder Woman Precious Fluid For a skincare product to be really worth our while, we need it to do double duty. L’Occitane En Provence Precious Fluid is designed to be an anti-aging skincare treatment but it does so much more than that; not only does it help take care of our aging skin, it also makes it incredibly smooth. This lightweight serum glides onto skin easily without causing it to become greasy. Our skin’s texture instantly feels less rough whenever we apply Precious Fluid. Made with nutrient-rich ingredients such as sunflower seed oil, evening primrose oil and fig fruit extract, this lotion is ideal for normal to combination skin. Apply after moisturizing for maximum effect.
Sweet Sunsets For a fruity, playful scent try Escada Taj Sunset. This flirty fragrance is perfect for wearing For a shiny, healthy pucker, try during the day but would also the newly revamped Rimmel be appropriate for a casual London Vinyl Gloss in No beach party. With heavy hints Regrets. MAC is always surprising us with their adorable, innovative collections that appeal to women of all ages. Their new Wonder Woman collection is no exception. With a range of lipsticks, blushes, pigments, eye shadow quads, nail lacquers, eyeliners and mascaras, this collection delivers fierce colours in fun packaging. Throw on a Wonder Woman utility belt brush set and sit down to play with Marquise d’ lipstick, eye shadows from the Lady Justice eye quad and Amazon Princess blush. Fill your Bulletproof Blue makeup bag with a range of playful colours, from Spitfire lipstick to Golden Lauriat mineralize skinfinish. Whether you’re a comic book fan or not, MAC’s newest collection reminds us that makeup is supposed to be fun.
All Hail Caesar While Caesar salad has always been one of our favourite foods, we can’t always find one that fits our fancy. The Caesar Salad at W Café, located in W Doha, is beyond incredible. We love its crisp Romaine lettuce, sharp parmesan cheese, crunchy homemade croutons and can’tbelieve-they’re-not-really-pork bacon bits. The tangy taste and generous portion wins us over every time. Served with fresh, hot buns, this dish is the ultimate lunch time treat for those who are in a hurry or just really love salad. This great dish comes with your choice of chicken or seafood. The best part is this fantastic salad can be prepared in mere minutes.

Goodbye Lullaby Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne is back and fiercer than ever with her album Goodbye Lullaby. Lavigne wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on this cathartic album following her split from Sum 41 musician Deryck Whibley. The album is a beautiful mix of sad goodbyes, appreciation for love and a willingness to move on without regrets. Whibley produced several of the songs on the album, showing that ex’s can not only stay friends but can even work together. The album is a musical journey through their relationship, beginning with the pretty Black Star, a tribute to Whibley, and ending with the self-explanatory Goodbye.
Sugary Scrubs Jo Malone’s Vitamin E Body Treatment Scrub is a thick, creamy mixture of organic brown sugar, vitamin E, shea butter and vegetable, fruit and seed oils. This gentle sugar scrub works to remove dry, dead skin without abusing skin. Milder than scrubs made from nuts or rough particles, this revitalizing treatment will leave your skin glowing from head to toe, while reducing the amount of environmental toxins on your skin’s surface. This sweet-smelling scrub, so rich and full of emollients, will leave your skin so soft and supple that you won’t need to moisturize afterwards. Use at least once a week to leave skin looking good and feeling great.
Lovely Lotion Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is not merely a moisturizer; it is the salvation of faces everywhere. The light yellow lotion works on every skin tone, including combination skin (the dreaded mix of an oily t-zone and dry cheeks). Never heavy nor greasy, this lotion not only keeps our face moisturized and fresh, it actually works to improve our skin’s texture. The weight of this moisturizer is ideal for day but can also be used at night in lieu of a heavier cream for those without desertdry skin. We love its handydandy, spillproof pump and lack of annoying fragrance.
More Macaroons! We have always been ridiculously in love with macaroons. But we can be a little fickle when it comes to deciding which variety of macaroons tickles our fancy at any given time. This month, we are nuts for the coconut macaroons at Seasons restaurant in Movenpick Hotel. Light, chewy and decadently sweet, these macaroons are the ultimate dessert after a big meal. While you can only snag them on certain theme nights, such as the Asian night every Wednesday, it is totally worth the wait each week to get our hands on a plateful of these amazing cookies. Every bite is like sugar-coated heaven, leaving us wanting more.

In 1985, the first Wrestlemania took place, which became the most important event of the wrestling scene.
In 2002, WWF was renamed to WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). Two brands were created, as well as two different shows named Raw and Smackdown. Since then, the talents are able to switch shows on the basis of the so-called Draft Lottery.
In 2001, WWF was able to buy out their biggest competitors, WCW and ECW, becoming the worldwide wrestling market leader.
WWE RAW’s current superstars are John Cena, The Miz, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Goldust, Randy Orton and Sheamus.
In 1984, Hulk Hogan became the first world superstar talent of the WWF.
The WWE Believe it or not, the origin of today’s WWE dates back to the 30s. A boxing promoter known as Jess McMahon began to sell tickets for wrestling matches at the Municipal Stadium in Freeport, N.Y., while his son, Vince McMahon, was busy setting up partnerships. Vince founded his own league, the Capitol Wrestling Federation, in the 1950s and started to promote shows. A couple of years later, those shows were aired for the first time on TV. In the next
few decades, there were many name changes, the creation of other alliances and leagues, the scrapping of the original concept and evolution of the league, which eventually ended in the creation of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in the 1980s. The WWF became the biggest wrestling league in the USA after buying out smaller leagues. Vince sold his company to his son, who turned it into a major entertainment company that focused on TV shows like All American Wrestling, Wrestling Challenge and Superstars of Wrestling. The WWF quickly became one of the biggest sports phenomenons in the world and a multi-million dollar TV spectacle.

This month brings the biggest music event of 2011 to Qatar. QH tells you why this is an event you shouldn’t miss.
D
oha is rapidly becoming a big centre of entertainment. The days when there was not much to do in the city are way past us. Major festivities have become part of the yearly calendar of events. This month brings along the biggest music event of 2011. Thursday, April 14 and Friday, April 15, British rock band Toploader, Romanian YouTube sensation Akcent, one of Britain’s best-loved reggae bands ASWAD, Lebanese group Mashrou3 Leila and many other local and international performers will rock the beach at the InterContinental Doha. The Big Day Out is a new music festival hitting Qatar's music scene this year. ARGON Global, in association with AG Maccom, Finland Advertising, Global DJs and I Love Qatar, are the people behind the music event that will congregate bands and performers from Europe and the Middle East. Local bands will also have their space in the lineup at The Big Day Out. More than 6,000 people are expected to sing and dance along with the amazing acts during the twoday event. DJs, acrobats, jugglers and minimagic shows will add to the excitement of the biggest party of the year.

The BANDS There are many bands that will get everybody to the dance floor. Let’s check out some the groups taking part in The Big Day Out.
TOPLOADER The British band was formed in 1997 and, since then, have sold over two million records worldwide and had 20 hits on the top of the charts. Over the years, Toploader has become one of the most successful acts in British music. Who can forget their global hit Dancing in the Moonlight or Magic Hotel? Their debut album sold over a million copies and, after taking a break in 2003, the band is releasing new material in May. Qatar’s partygoers will be one of the first audiences in the world to see their comeback and hear the new track off their new album Only Human.
AKCENT The Romanian band is a massive hit on YouTube and radio stations all over the world. Some of their number one hits include That’s my Name and Lovestoned, which became huge hits in Romania, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Macedonia, Croatia, Greece, India, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, Albania and Canada among other countries.
ASWAD Two decades and 15 albums later, ASWAD remains one of Britain’s most beloved reggae bands. The duo of Drummie Zeb is famous among reggae bands because they bring a certain flavour to the genre.

Akcent in Doha In anticipation of The Big Day Out, QH spoke with Adrian, Mihai and Sorin from Akcent, one of the most anticipated acts of the event.
QH: Is this your first time playing in Qatar? How do you feel about it? What are your expectations?
QH: Tell us a little bit about how you got started in the music business.
QH: Describe the kind of show the people attending The Big Day Out will experience.
ADRIAN: I started in my teenage years when I used to be a radio and club DJ in my home town. A few years later, I moved to Bucharest and continued working as a radio DJ for the biggest Romanian radio network at the time, Radio Contact. Step by step, I became interested in producing music; that’s when I formed Akcent with my old friends Sorin, Mihai and, at that time, Marius.
Adrian: Our show is always the kind of event where you don’t just sit and watch, but you participate; you’ll see… everybody will be singing with us, dancing and partying!
QH: Define your style and sound. Mihai: Our sound is constantly developing as we get influenced by the music we’re listening to, the people we meet and places we see, but we’re sticking to dance music with a very much pop influence on vocals.
Sorin: It is our first time in Qatar and we’re sure we’re going to have a great time and a good party as we always do! We have already got many messages from friends and fans on our Facebook fan page about the show.
QH: What makes your show different from other acts? Mihai: You should ask the people usually attending our shows; I think that’s the way you get the best idea about it! QH: What is the most enjoyable aspect of performing in front of a big audience? Sorin: Actually, for us, it really doesn’t matter if the audience is big or small; it’s amazing either way when we see people
enjoying our music and having a great time together with us. QH: You have become a huge hit on YouTube. How does that make you feel? Adrian: It is amazing and it seems it’s not only YouTube! But YouTube is an extraordinary way of making your music known to the world. Our latest video has already passed the seven million mark of views in very little time and it looks like it won't stop here. I’ve also noticed artists being very popular on YouTube while they are still unsigned, reaching millions of views from all over the world. QH: Do you think you are living the peak of your career? Mihai: We’ve actually been living it since a few years back when the success of That’s My Name started. Hopefully it will not end too soon, as we’re enjoying it a lot. QH: In which way do you want to influence people with your music? Sorin: We want people to think positive, to love and live their lives. That’s what we are usually singing about and that’s our main target with regards to our influence on the people.

Gondolania, the indoor theme park in Villaggio Mall, is changing the landscape of indoor entertainment. Last November, the park had a soft opening, as not all rides were ready for the public. But this month Gondolania will have its much-deserved grand opening, as the park becomes fully operational. QH tried firsthand all of the rides and games.
W
hen we heard that Gondolania was having its grand opening April 7, we wanted to check out what was so special about the biggest indoor theme park in the region. We decided to make a special day out of it and went as group. Visiting the park was like reviving our childhood; we remembered how much fun and happiness these parks can bring to your life. We simply could not have had a better time. Gondolania transports you to a land of fantasy that will turn even the grumpiest person into the happiest person. Whether you are 10 or 50, there is something in the park that will put a smile in your face. Gondolania offers the perfect mix of thrill rides, kiddy rides and attractions that will blow your mind.
FEATURED RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS The Spinning Roller-Coaster If you like speed and big thrills, this is the right ride for you. The spinning gondolas run on a 370-metre track around the entire 18
park passing through buildings and on top of other attractions. It was a very bumpy ride, but it reminded us why roller-coasters are the biggest attraction in any theme park.
Gondalania Go-Kart We were told the track is the finest in Doha and we couldn’t agree more. The race track is challenging but extremely safe, allowing you to have the best possible time and drive as fast as you like without getting hurt.
The 4D theatre The only 4D cinema in Qatar offers one of the most realistic cinematic experiences there is. The ride is an absolute blast; I could hear my colleagues screaming and jumping as if they were little kids. We were so pleased, as we didn’t really expect to have so much fun. We saw two films and we couldn’t decide which one was better. But it’s not only what you see on the screen that makes this 10-minute ride so cool. The seats are operated on an air driven servo motion and special effects include front air blasts, front water spray, neck and leg ticklers and vibrating seats. It is one of the nicest things I have done in quite a while.

The third edition of the Gulf Jazz Festival is coming to Qatar, much to the enjoyment of jazz fans in the country. QH gives you all the details on this annual music event.
F
or the past two years Qatar has hosted the Gulf Jazz Festival. The singular event gathers a very selective group of artists from different parts of the world. Every year, the jazz performers tour around many countries in the region including Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. Jazz fans will be enchanted with some of the best acts of the genre. Famous musicians such as Jarek Smietana and Karen Edwards will play their soul out at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on April 30. The event will start at 8:00 p.m.

Rising star Lisa Lavie shocked us with her powerful voice at Maze’s one-year anniversary celebrations last month. QH predicts her star power will only increase with time. QH: How did you get your start?
QH: What are your plans for 2011?
LL: I started singing at about 10 years old. I didn’t really take it too seriously until I was about 16. That’s when I started touring and writing my own songs. I was touring [across Canada] with a French hip-hop group for two years and it just escalated from there.
LL: I’m travelling a lot, doing a lot of different shows; I’m about to do a two-month tour [across the U.S.] as a lead vocalist for Yanni. I’m also working on my second album and on a Christmas album for November.
QH: What motivated you to put videos on YouTube? LL: I had written my debut album and I thought why not just try to post a video online and see what happens, see what people like, what they don’t like. I posted my first original song and a bunch of people started commenting. Everybody was really liking it and I [decided to] keep posting videos and see what happens. It kept escalating from there. From thousands of hits, it became millions and it just kept going and I just kept up with it. QH: Was that Angel? LL: Angel was the first breakout that I had. Before that I was getting a lot of hits but nothing like Angel. All of a sudden, I put up Angel and that really popped and it became a viral video. 22
QH: Where do you get the ideas for your songs? LL: I like writing out of personal experience. Those are the songs that touch me the most, writing out of personal experience. On my first album I wrote a lot about relationships and things that I’ve been through. This album, I’m focusing on that but I’m also going to be focusing on things about life, not necessarily all relationship stuff. QH: What do you hope your fans will get out of your music? LL: I love the fact that when I write songs that people can relate to certain things that I’m saying. I feel like if I write out of personal experience they might be able to grasp and understand exactly where I’m coming from. I really like writing songs that I know are going to touch people or make people think or make people feel a certain thing.

Jones started the DCO Wind Band with fellow DCO member Mark Seay two years ago. The wind players in the orchestra were all adult members who wanted to play more. There isn’t always a need for a large amount of wind players in an orchestra, said Jones. The two ensembles currently share several members. Sharing members can be a struggle because both conductors often want the same players at the same time. But they make it work. “We’re good at sharing,” Jones joked. The two conductors also work together, so they are in constant contact with each other, which makes it easier. “It’s challenging but we make it work because we know the value of making music for our members is to do this, so we

The conference is a gathering point to discuss ways sports could contribute to improving environmental issues that affect the earth. Participants will try to come up with suitable solutions and make the earth sustainable for future generations. The conference takes place every two years and is usually hosted by the city that will either host the next summer or winter Olympic Games. But the 9th edition of the environmental conference brings something new. This time around it will be hosted by a city that isn't organizing either of the two major sporting events. Doha was selected above London to organize the prestigious conference. Qatar has gained a reputation for sport development over the past decade. In addition, Qatar is aiming to become the region’s green capital; therefore, the conference will provide the nation with the right platform to show the world how committed they are to the environment.

Roundup
QH has ordained 2011 the Year of the Roundup. This means we’ll be scouting out restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and hotels all over Doha to find the best of the best in the food and beverage industry. This month we bring you the best of outdoor dining in Doha. There’s no reason to sit inside with patios this perfect.
L’WZAAR
at Katara Cultural Village
This enormous seafood restaurant has an unbelievable amount of indoor seating but you’ll want to scoop a seat in one of several outdoor patio areas. From casual tables with umbrellas to romantic benches tucked into alcoves, there is a great variety of outdoor tables to choose from at this fish joint. But what truly puts L’WZAAR over the top in an area where virtually every restaurant has outdoor dining is their incredible fish market, cheap prices and amazing service. We started our meal with a giant veggie basket, an overflowing bread basket and a variety of dips, including a tahini dip so amazing we ate not one, not two but three bowls of it (we may have even snagged an extra bread basket). L’WZAAR knows how to do seafood right. The fish and chips are crispy without being greasy, the sushi is delicate and delicious and the crab is meaty and cooked just right. This restaurant is great for when you want to chow down on fish for cheap while enjoying the lovely view of the water at Katara.
Al Mourjan
at Al Corniche and Souq Waqif
This classic Lebanese restaurant is known for two things – the food and the view. Let’s start with the view at Al Mourjan’s original location on the Corniche. Arguebly the best scenery in Doha, this restaurant is located in between “old and new Doha," with the Museum of Islamic Art visible on one side, the glittering city centre on the other, and the stunning water in between. The only restaurant located on the Corniche, the outdoor seating area is extensive and romantic. With an impressive menu of cold and hot mezzes, seafood, raw meats, pastas and soups, it’s hard to know what to order. Go ahead and try as many courses as you like; you’ll want to stay here gazing at the view for as long as possible. Lovely in the daytime; mesmerizing in the evening, this is the perfect date restaurant. For a change of pace, try the restaurant’s outdoor seating at Souq Waqif. With comfortable chairs and a table full of delicious food, you really can’t go wrong. If you’re not in the mood for food, try some shisha and people watch as the day goes by.

Tajine
SPOTLIGHT ON FOOD
at Souq Waqif
Tucked away amongst a number of restaurants in the souq, Tajine offers customers a variety of outdoor seating, with several tables sprawled outside on the ground level and a stunning stone rooftop patio as part of the second floor of this Moroccan restaurant. Both outdoor seating areas are great for eating, smoking shisha or people-watching but the rooftop tables are particularly cozy. The menu is authentic Moroccan, with delicacies ranging from chicken mcharmel to baby camel. Start your meal with the mixed selection of starters, which consists of cheese and meat briouats, (samosa-like fried treats filled with cheese or meat), along with vegetable cigarts and chicken pastillas. The restaurant’s warm, floury buns are the perfect accompaniment to any meal but are especially good when used to sop up extra sauce from the Tajine spicy shrimps. The mixed grill, a huge platter of meat, including chicken, lamb, camel and spicy sausage, is accompanied by a generous helping of mouth-watering saffron rice and fries. For a lighter treat, try the vegetable sandwich, a huge slab of bread filled with caramelized vegetables, including onions, peppers and tomatoes.
Churrasco on the Beach at Four Seasons Doha
Glowing tiki torches, palm trees, tranquil water and sand sets the scene for this fantastic outdoor dining experience. Only available on Wednesday nights, this dinner on the beach is the perfect setting for a couple or a group of friends to cherish a night of great service and unbelievable food. Churrasco involves a non-stop feast of giant shrimps, spicy sausages, thick turkey sausages, perfectly cooked chicken breasts, rare prime rib, succulent tenderloin, thick hunks of roasted lamb, juicy quail and hearty short ribs. Every course is slowly roasted over an open flame and served fresh from large skewers by passadors, the best Brazilian meat servers in the business. This celebration of food includes a buffet of side dishes, including Brazilian rice, octopus, mini-baked potatoes, salads and soups. The meat is all spectacular, particularly the quail and tenderloin, and the view is simply stunning. You’ll be tempted to devour as much scrumptious meat as possible each time the servers stop by with their skewers and knives, but pace yourself as you go along with each course because the meat doesn’t stop coming until you flip your wooden coin from green to red! Afterwards, enjoy a sweet dessert to cap off your gastronomic journey through Brazil.
Liza
at The Pearl – Qatar
With so many amazing patios at The Pearl-Qatar, it can be tricky to pick the ideal place to enjoy a lovely meal outside. Liza’s incredible food helps it win the battle for the best place to lounge about outdoors at The Pearl-Qatar. The outdoor dining area provides a lovely view of the hypnotizing water, the shiny boats and the lively people waltzing past. The menu offers reasonably priced Lebanese food with a French twist. Named for the owner’s wife, Liza minimizes the amount of oil used in its mezzes, providing a lighter taste. We went crazy for the moutable (we could easily eat a bowl a day), paired with fresh, hot bread. Their standout dish is castaletta (lamb chops with cumin tomato salad and yellow lentil purée with garlic sauce), juicy and tender, without being fatty. Their menu is fun and unique, with items ranging from roasted quail with cracked wheat and pomegranate juice (such a small but delicious bird) to fatet batenjen (Aubergine broth, meat and aromatized yogurt topped with crispy Lebanese bread). We love its variety of desserts, particularly the trio of rose, almond and pistachio ice cream. You’ll come for the picture-perfect view and stay for the delectable food. 37

Fabulous
French Food By Sydnee Bryant
La Maison du Caviar has a new executive chef, a revamped menu and a whole new vibe. QH sampled some fabulous French cuisine in the cozy French brasserie, tucked away in the W Doha.
W
hen you step inside La Maison du Caviar, it is as if someone has cut the stars out of the sky and delicately placed them on the dreamy blue ceiling of the restaurant. This, along with romantic lighting and the limited number of tables, amounts to a cozy little space perfect for a lovely French meal. The space is “quite charming,” said new executive chef Rémy Lefebvre during a pre-dinner interview last month. However, he believes the essence of the restaurant’s experience is mostly on the plate.
Lefebvre fills those plates with organic and regional produce, in addition to plenty of seafood, such as sea bass, blue crabs, squid and the locally caught hammour. He created an entirely new menu for La Maison du Caviar, to be officially launched this month. The innovative menu focuses on high-class brasserie items. Originally from France, Lefebvre worked in his own restaurant in Spain for 10 years before arriving in Qatar a few months ago. His plan is to turn La Maison du Caviar into a French brasserie, with very classic food with a modern twist. 38
The evening we dine at La Maison du Caviar, Lefebvre prepares a tasting menu for us to experience items he is trying out for the new menu. We start with a fish terrine with tobiko and champagne sabaillon. It overwhelms my senses with wonderment. The texture is so different from what I normally expect from fish that at first my taste buds aren’t quite sure what to make of the dish; they know they like it but they are confused as to why. The hearty, unique texture of the fish is pleasantly filling and a nice change of pace from flakier fish. Lefebvre also wins points for his interesting presentation with this dish. Next, we move onto king crab tempura with wild rice and tarragon cream. I don’t eat shellfish, so Lefebvre graciously accommodates my request to make a switch. He surprises me with the best spring roll I’ve ever eaten, atop a creamy pile of rich, textured rice. The spring roll is hot, crispy and not at all greasy. It is clearly freshly made and it makes all the difference in the taste, elevating what I normally consider greasy trash into a flaky treat that I could actually eat without feeling alarmed about what it could be doing to my arteries. My dining companions assure me that the king crab

tempura is also excellent, perfectly paired with the crunchy, earthy rice. The following course is a sensational hammour with artichoke hearts and chivry sauce. The sauce is creamy but not heavy, and coats the fish in a delicious blanket of tastiness. The fish is perfectly cooked; the sauce compliments the fish in a way that makes sense without seeming predictable. This proves to be one of everyone’s favourite courses, simply because the taste is just so fantastic. Lefebvre manages to fuse local food with French sauces and cooking techniques, proving that he is fully capable of pulling off his vision of a French brasserie in Doha. Afterwards, we move onto the beef course, which consists of beef cheek with spicy banana and carrots. The beef cheek is unbelievably, melt-in-your-mouth soft and cooked just right, with a crispy outside. The beef really comes to life when paired with the spicy banana sauce. At this point, I am getting quite full but am still able to appreciate the nice cut of this quality beef. Eating beef cheek is a different experience than eating other cuts of beef, simply because the texture is so tender it almost
doesn’t seem like beef. Still, beef cheek is considered one of the more “high-class” cuts and Lefebvre does a nice job with it.

The delectable chicken and cashew nuts mixed perfectly with the soft rice. My dining partner tried the Kae Yang, char-grilled lamb chops marinated in Thai herbs and served with Isan chili dipping sauce. The tender, well-marinated lamb was delicious on its own but the Isan chili dipping sauce transformed it into a mouth-watering dish. This special lamb is a great alternative to more traditional lamb dishes available in Doha. While we were massively full after our main courses, we were fully determined to try at least one dessert item. We didn’t have enough room in our very satisfied bellies to tackle the whole dessert menu, so we decided to share Khao Niew Ma Muang, a dish consisting of fresh mango served with sticky sweet rice, topped with coconut milk. While the idea of rice mixed with fruit for dessert initially confused me (I still don’t really get the popularity of rice pudding), I truly enjoyed this sweet dish. The mango mixed perfectly with the sticky sweet rice to create a treat that was light but full of flavour. Mango Tree is a great place to go for a lovely meal, particularly if you are extremely hungry. The portions are huge (except the desserts, which really are designed for one person and one person alone) but the prices are reasonable, ensuring you get good value for your money. The staff are friendly and attentive but not overbearing or snooty. The mocktails menu alone make it a great place to hang out but if you’re going to make the trek to The Pearl-Qatar, you might as well plan on staying for lunch or dinner because you will be completely tempted by the restaurant’s irresistible Thai treats. 41
In the Land of
Hummus By Phil Hakecka
In case you haven’t noticed, mezzes are kind of a big deal here in Doha. QH explores the emotions behind one man's love of hummus.
A
fter an evening of juice and shisha at Souq Waqif, Hamed and I were hungry. Having recently lived in Egypt, I insisted we grab some late night koshari, an Atkins-busting rice, pasta and tomato sauce concoction popular in the Land of the Pharaohs. After nearly an hour of traversing the city we gave up. Hamed could sense my disappointment.
That night, nearly a month into my new life in Doha, occurred at a time of transition. I was still a Doha neophyte, a wide-eyed Arabic student mesmerized by Doha's glittering facade and cathedral malls, but my radical wonder was slowly peeling as a nascent feeling was uncloaked: I was lacking something. Physical, emotional, I could not tell. Turns out, it was kind of culinary. I will never forget my first visit to Beirut Restaurant. After our fruitless search for koshari, Hamed's Landcruiser snaked its way through a grimy network of back alley streets, tucked away in a corner that managed to feel simultaneously vacant and congested. The restaurant itself, a rectangular cafeteria with long tables and the kitchen at the back, was old and charming and ever-so-slightly run down. Cracks splintered the yellowed walls and a dull beige color glazed the floor. Beirut Restaurant was authentic, I thought, one of the few buildings in Qatar that was older than me. 42
It was packed - Qataris, other Arabs, Indians and Fillipinos. I learned that the restaurant served exclusively hummus and foul (fava beans), all succinctly listed on a pamphlet-sized menu that Hamed need not reference when ordering. Two steaming hot, cereal bowl sized hummus concoction soon arrived, as my quizzical expression revealed my wonder. "It's called fattah hummus," Hamed said, as he flashed a confident smile. "It's much better than koshari." I nervously dip my spoon into this creation, unsure what surprises I would unearth. What I found was promising: a heaping portion of warm hummus and olive oil engulfing fried pita bread and sizzling, nearly pureed chickpeas, all topped with roasted pine nuts. Hamed liberally doused his with more olive oil. I did the same. My arteries and heart still refuse to forgive me for cruelly introducing them to this meal, but my taste buds were in ecstasy. I had always enjoyed hummus as a side dish or snack, but this was a proper meal. The hummus itself - warm, creamy and smooth - suggested a near-perfect balance of ingredients. The lemon, tahini, garlic and chickpea flavours each made its presence known, but not in competition with one another – they were in delicious agreement. The fried pita bread, suffocated within an oozing pool of hummus, managed to preserve its crispy, flavourful texture, providing the dish with a playful crunch. The sizzling chickpeas offered a hint of sweetness to balance its salty surroundings. The cacophony of seemingly incongruous

and envisioning the quotidian details of a Doha existence. At the same time, I continued listening to the complaining and whining that became the background music of life: expats, mostly western, who constantly bemoaned Doha's tepid social scene and energy deficiency. They felt disconnected from the city as they lugubriously wined and dined through their weeks, measuring their Doha time as intervals between vacations outside the country.
Perhaps the greatest threat to Beirut's throne was Layalina Restaurant, tucked away near the flyover on Salwa Road. My I refused to listen when my body begged roommates and I took note of the plaque for me to stop, to slow down, to reconsider declaring it Doha's best Arabic restaurant my decision to finish the bowl. Kitchen Gadgets for Healthy living
Eating nutritious food is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. But it can be hard to find the time to cook delicious, healthy food at home. Be sure to have these handy-dandy gadgets in your kitchen to make cooking healthy a breeze.
Blender You can use it for soups, smoothies, hummus, ice cream and other velvet soft delicatessen. When you buy a blender, it is worth it to spend a bit extra to get a high-quality machine. Some good brands are Vitamix, Kitchen Aid and Warring.
Food processor This one has the same value in the kitchen as a Rolls-Royce in your garage. It can chop, puree and make strips. Yes, it takes the heavy load and it has the power to get the job done.
Grater Get a small but good one to handle your garlic, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Also buy a big one that can do carrots for a delicious cake or grated apples, which are excellent if you are suffering from diarrhea.
Japanese mandoline This handy cutter is brilliant for your veggies. This will cut your potatoes in very thin pieces so you can make your own potato chips, with no artificial ingredients inside. Same can be done with beetroot, sweet potatoes, turnips and other delicious vegetables. Or you can even make your own cucumber salad. Add only salt, pepper and a little yogurt. Place in the fridge for a couple of hours. May-Britt Searty is a natural health practitioner and consultant living in Doha. She can be reached at maybrittsearty@yahoo.com.

SUMMER PREP AT
La Salon
By Sydnee Bryant
Time to update your look for the upcoming summer months! QH heads to La Salon, the new salon located within Spa Chakra, to get a summer-friendly makeover.
L
ocated in Alfardan Towers, La Salon is destined to become the best-kept secret in the city. The female-only salon is situated on the 39th floor of the building, within Spa Chakra. The salon, which opened this month, is accompanied by Le Salon, a male-only spa. The sparkling white salon is cozy and minimal, with sleek furniture, a big screen television and relaxing music. In the corner sits a stand full of high-end makeup, just waiting to be tested. Beside it rests a display of L’Oreal Professional hair products, which are used exclusively in the salon.
In front of the gleaming counter and mirror, an impromptu French lesson is taking place. The subject, me; the tutor, my Tunisian hair dresser, who speaks only French and Arabic. I use my very rusty French to 48
ask for an updated summer look. I’m eager to brush up on my often-neglected French vocabulary; she is keen to chop off my precious, albeit extremely dry, hair. We settle on a compromise; she can cut off several inches to get rid of my lacklustre ends and add some bounce to my mane, as long as she does not take off more than five inches. My lovely hairdresser, whose personality shines through despite the language barrier, goes to work. She meticulously snips off inches of my hair piece by piece, continuously checking to make sure that I am not freaking out about the length. She takes her time, making every little cut with skilled precision. Victory, the manager of Spa Chakra, also checks in and communicates to the hair stylist my desire to

not be bald. Luckily, I have nothing to be worried about. After an expert blowout, I am left with a silky curtain of healthylooking hair. It is now barely grazing my shoulders but is still long enough that I can pull it back into a ponytail or toss it over my shoulder. My hair feels much lighter and out of my way, a bonus as the weather heats up. After examining my ‘do, we all agree: something is missing. It’s nice, but it’s not quite as summery as we had hoped it would be. My red hair lacks depth and sunshine. So we decide to add a smattering of blonde highlights to add some warmth to my mane. This is a bigger deal than it sounds like. I never colour my hair. I’ve only gotten highlights twice before, both with less than lovely results. The last time unnatural colour touched my locks was over six years ago. I am hesitant. My sweet hairdresser senses my doubt and smiles assuringly. She murmurs something that sounds comforting in French. I inhale, and remind myself that change is good. Hair is only hair; it grows back and it’s dead anyways. Or so I tell myself.
BEFORE
AFTER
What comes next is a long process. My hairdresser spends several hours painting a goopy lilac mixture onto thin strands of hair one section at a time. Again, her attention to detail causes her to take her time, selecting the location of each highlight with thoughtful consideration. She knows this is important to me, and she takes her time. She waits patiently for the colour to take to my hair, which takes normal than longer because my hair is so fair. It takes so long that I fall asleep in my chair, a testament to the tranquil setting of the salon. My hairdresser checks the colour repeatedly, sometimes reapplying more of the whipped purple dye onto select strands. After almost four hours, the colour finally takes to my hair. My hairdresser is very excited about this. She rinses my hair, assuring me the colour is “tres jolie,” meaning the colour is “very pretty.” I am excited that I actually understand what she is saying. My hair stylist dries my hair again, twisting strands around a round brush
to create more volume and bounce. She snips a few stray hairs from my bangs that escaped the scissors during the initial cut. Finally, my new hair is unveiled. It is much less scary than I thought it would be. In fact, it is lovely. The colour adds warmth and sunshine to my face and blends well with my natural colour. The look is exactly what I want – different enough to be exciting but subtle enough that the change isn’t drastic or unflattering. I take a moment to admire my new ‘do in the mirror, kiss my hair dresser au revoir on each cheek and say merci. To complement my new summer hairstyle, I cap off my summer makeup with the ultimate warm weather must-haves – a manicure and pedicure. The nail technician files my keyboard-dented nails into lovely round shapes, gets rid of unsightly cuticles and slicks on a delicate white shade. She then removes my old toenail polish and replaces it with a sweet shade of mauve. With a new hairdo, manicured nails and sandal-ready toes, I leave La Salon and Spa Chakra confident that I can handle the summer heat. 49

et’s face it - makeovers are always a good thing. Even a subtle change can really make a difference in the way you look and feel. Makeovers can be major or small; it depends on what part of your appearance you want to change. But when it comes to first impressions, most people will notice your hair, face and hands the first moment they see you. So let’s start with where you can get the hairstyle, shave and neat hands that will produce a great first impression.
SPA CHAKRA
Getting the right look usually requires the help of expert hairstylists, spas and other professional places. With just a little bit of research and direction, you too can find the place that will help you look your very best.
THE HAIRCUT
BEFORE
We visited Spa Chakra to try first-hand the kind of makeovers men can experience. The overall look of the spa is sophisticated and trendy. The ambience makes you feel relaxed, while the view is simply one of the best in Doha, as Spa Chakra is located on the 39th floor in Alfardan Towers in West Bay. The spa offers many services, but for our first visit we were more interested to see what the male salon at the spa can offer its clients.
Before proceeding with my hair appointment, I had a 10-minute massage courtesy of the spa, as my hairstylist was

still busy with another client. As soon as I finished with my short massage, it was time to start with my makeover. Mohamad Hinnewi, my hairstylist, saw my oldfashioned haircut and he immediately knew it had to be dramatically changed. I had nothing specific in mind; I just wanted to have a new, fresh and modern hairstyle. There were no questions asked. He took a good look at the shape of my face and that was pretty much it. Hinnewi knew exactly what needed to be done to achieve a new and improved me. The results were remarkable, changing my overall appearance. Hinnewi was very assertive with his choice. He also was especially attentive, as were all the members of the staff. The salon was so clean that not one hair could be spotted on the floor or on the counter. The service at Le Salon is very personalized. And I have to mention the view again, as it was truly unique. Having your hair cut while listening to soft music, enjoying a nice cup of coffee and the entire Doha bay as a background is something one doesn’t get to experience every day.
THE PERFECT SHAVE When I first arrived in Doha almost eight years ago, all my friends told me that a must-do in Doha is to have your face shaved by a barber in one the shops by the road. My first experience, years ago, didn’t turn out to be the best. After the barber was done with my shaving, my face came out
looking reddish with blisters. It took two days for the irritation to go away. I was not looking forward to the next time a person will slide a razor on my face. However, I decided to give it another try. The second time worked like a charm. Hinnewi did an excellent job. In addition, I left Le Salon with shaving tips. He first applied a special oil to soften my skin. He then proceeded to apply a combination of warm water and shaving cream, a process he repeated many times over. He explained to me that the secret of a good shaving was to rub the face with the mixture of cream and warm water as many times as possible in order for the cream to properly penetrate the pores, and to prepare and relax the skin for the razor. The shaving process came close to an end with a small amount of cream and powder applied to my face to refresh my skin. The final step was to use an aftershave machine to leave no trace of hair. This time around, there was no redness or blisters on the horizon.
THE MANICURE AND PEDICURE A lot of people look at your hands when they first meet you. Having clean, properly cut fingernails is also part of looking good. Spa Chakra offers manicures and pedicures for men. The session is very private and it takes about 45 minutes. This time, the view was a tranquil look at the pool that lies below the spa. In general, the manicurist did a superb job on my hands and feet.
OTHER SERVICES Le Salon offers many other services for men. Making an appointment is strictly required. You can make your booking by calling 4499-9250.

Common ailments such as insomnia, weight gain and stress can all be treated with similar holistic healing techniques, such as acupuncture, cupping, Chinese massage, Qigong and Tai Chi. Holistic therapist Pascal Veraguth employs many or all of these techniques when he treats his patients. The passionate healer brings his brand of holistic medicine to the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa until the end of this month.

But it doesn’t scare Pascal Veraguth. The holistic therapist, born and trained and Switzerland, has arrived in Doha to rid me of my phlegm, or so I’d like to believe. Qigong can be broken down to mean “energy transfer,” said Veraguth. Everyone can practice this exercise. to treat his patients, who come to him to for illnesses varying from insomnia to the common cold. There are many different types of acupuncture. Each acupuncturist has their own technique that can vary within the different types of acupuncture. For the detox treatment, Veraguth does Qigong and acupuncture, in addition to some energetic work. Some of the benefits of detoxing are that it helps balance the energy inside your body and clear the body and mind. This requires several treatments to be effective, said Veraguth. The insomnia treatment includes some of the same techniques, including acupuncture. Acupuncture is a natural way of treating people by moving the energy within your body to harmonize, explained Veraguth. “I need to find the root of the problem; that’s the target of the acupuncture,” Veraguth said. Acupuncture is used in both traditional and classical Chinese medicine. Veraguth inserts a very fine needle into selected points in the body to stimulate the points and active the body’s natural healing abilities. Acupuncture can be used to help treat conditions from asthma and stress to chronic fatigue and digestive problems. Cupping is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Veraguth uses a glass cup to remove the heat within your body. A glass cup is attached to the back and the cup sucks the skin in and increases the blood flow in the body. Veraguth applies oil to the back to do sliding cupping to avoid leaving serious marks on the skin, which can happen with some kinds of cupping.
I listened to the rhythmic popping sound the cups made each time they sucked air up; it was oddly comforting, as if the more sound effects involved, the more effective the treatment must be. While cupping isn’t painful, it is a strange sensation to get used to. Afterwards, Veraguth practiced some Chinese massage on my shoulders to release muscle tension and increase my energy levels. While my cold wasn’t miraculously cured (to be fair, I only did one session instead of the recommended four), some of my sinus pressure was relieved by the next day. While I hadn’t known if the cupping would produce amazing results, I was fully hopeful that the placebo effect would take place and replace my phlegm with smiles and happy thoughts. This hopefulness, it turns out, is an essential part of the process.
It’s very important to be open to the idea of holistic medicine if you are trying it out, said Veraguth. However, this doesn’t mean you Cupping is an excellent way to relieve the common cold, said Veraguth. As I happened have to disregard the benefits of Western medicine. The two healing practices are to have the aforementioned disgusting like yin and yang, explained Veraguth. “We cold the day I saw him, I begged him to need both medicines – the natural medicine get rid of it. It’s prime scuba diving season this month! QH superstars Jay and Paolo take to the waters at New Club Reef with Let’s Go Diving to discover what lies beneath Qatar’s still waters.
S
cuba diving is a beautiful sport. It’s a social activity, a workout, an environmental lesson and a chance to escape everyday life while exploring an unseen world. Expert scuba divers Ryan Archer and Shaun Brown take to the water near Sealine Beach Resort every weekend, usually as part of their side gig with Let’s Go Diving, a group in Doha that offers scuba diving lessons.
Archer, who has been diving for 15 years, met Brown while scuba diving at the centre Brown used to work at. The two divers decided to start their own scuba diving group, one that would offer them the flexibility to work their schedules around their other full-time occupations, about a year-and-a-half ago. They now offer classes on a freelance basis, worked around their students’ schedules and their own work schedules.
The program includes classroom theory, one lesson in a swimming pool to learn skills and two trips to the beach to dive. Students are given a book for personal studying. Archer and Brown offer afternoon and evening courses in everything from discover scuba up to dive master. They also teach deep diving and night diving courses. Night diving is a part of the advanced course. Divers set up their equipment while it’s still light out, take some time to relax or barbeque and then head into the water with torches at night. Night diving often increases a diver's confidence, allowing them to enjoy regular scuba diving. People generally learn scuba diving in a group. Diving is naturally a social sport, since people should always dive with a buddy in order to be safe. Archer and Brown usually take out groups of four people at one time.
First-time divers can start off with an introductory diving The most important thing to remember about diving is that it is important to educate yourself and to continue lesson. After that, if students decide they want to do learning. Always diving safely is also essential. Taking the full open water course, the cost of the initial diving classes is a great way to learn how to dive; Qatar is lesson is subtracted from the full cost of the course. 54

a particularly good place to pick up the sport. “It’s a great place to learn. The water is usually calm; it’s warm,” Archer said. “It’s a good place for people to get their confidence up, get their skills.” March and April are the ideal time to dive in Qatar but it is possible to dive year-round. In summer, divers start around 5:00 a.m. and finish by 10:00 a.m. to avoid the intense heat. While Qatar’s waters are generally a little quieter than some of the more-famous diving spots in the world, divers sometimes spot something special, like the time Brown saw about 80 dolphins while diving. So what makes scuba diving such a popular activity? For Archer, it’s the calmness being undersea provides. “I’m a diving addict,” Archer said. “It’s quiet, peaceful.” Brown, who has 10 years experience diving, enjoys seeing what life is like for sea creatures. “You know a fish tank? It’s like you’re inside the fish tank,” Brown joked. The great thing about diving is that it is a sport that anyone can do, said Archer. While people are often concerned that health problems, such as asthma, might restrict them from diving, anyone who is properly trained can scuba dive.

PAOLO I'm not a pro but I consider myself a strong swimmer. Growing up near the beach and around a culture that centered around the sea, it's almost impossible to not love the water, yet one of my greatest fears is drowning. This was my first time diving. I wasn't too worried, especially after learning that the introductory dive would take us down about 15 metres. I was confident that if anything went wrong I could reach the surface. And so we went through the basics of diving - the dos and don’ts, the gear and what goes where. We learned the basic diving sign language and invented new ones as a joke. We got into our suits, again with a lot of laughter and jokes. We helped each other attach the heavy
breathing gear like Centurions' Max Ray - 'Brilliant' Sea Operations Commander. I made more paranoid jokes about how I was going to die. Once we got into the water, we had to take a couple of test breaths underwater with the scuba gear. Everything was OK until we were set to dive deeper and then panic set in. HOLY SHIP! I was putting all my breathing options into this mouthpiece. And I was dependent on air in a metal container at my back.

QH SENSASTIONS LEARN
I'm the type of person who goes into a room and scouts all the exits in case a fire breaks out and which exit to use in relation to where the fire is situated. So you can imagine the panic I felt when I was limited to only one option. I may be a confident swimmer, but I was drowning in panic! Of course, I immediately forgot that I would be diving with professionals; the buddy system is there for a reason – you can steal his oxygen if something goes wrong with yours. I calmed down once I figured out how to do this (I joke, but seriously - the gear is actually built to support you and your buddy). Once I got over my paranoia, the experience was actually very peaceful. Except that I was struggling with how to orient myself. Stupid gravity. But really, everything seemed more calm underwater. Cold, but calmer. It reminded me why I took up biology. If you've been to beaches around Qatar, you know to expect that it's going to be as barren as the land. But surprisingly there was quite a bit to marvel at for the short time we were underwater. I certainly didn't expect it to be diverse either, especially around the bathtub pyramid. Yes, a bathtub pyramid: bathtubs stacked against each other to form a pyramid with three toilet bowls at the peak (we believe that's where goldfishes flush out from). If you're not a nature-loving and adventurous person and that's still not enough to pique your curiosity, I hear there are more diving areas around Qatar that are now thriving marine cities built from abandoned land cruisers and school buses.

JAY Having done a dive two years ago, I was actually really excited to get wet and wild again! It was quite a challenge to put on the wet suit, even though it was still dry. It took three men to put just the wetsuit on me. And I’m not kidding. Now I know what it feels like to be a sausage! But then, I still had to put on the vest, the tank, weights and the regulator system, not to mention the fins and goggles! When I had everything on, it literally felt like I was carrying the whole world on my back. It was such a relief when I got deep enough into the salty water that I started to float and everything seemed alright again. And that was the start of a wonderful journey! When we started going deeper, I looked around and all I could see was the big blue. And although the visibility wasn’t great that day, I played Disney’s Under The Sea from The Little Mermaid in my head to make myself feel better. It was great to witness underwater life happen before me. I saw a lot little
fishies scurrying about! It made the little boy in me giddy. I tried to touch a few but they darted away so fast. So I decided to focus my attention on other things. Given that there’s no natural reef in the area where we were diving, I saw some of the efforts put into making an artificial one. There were rods that formed some kind of a tent structure, but they definitely paled in comparison to the magnificent bathtub-toilet structure that lay before my eyes. After swimming in the depths for awhile, it was time to go up. As much as I wanted to stay in the sea, the thought of dry land was really tempting. When we got back up, I felt relieved that I could finally breathe through my nose again. Although I failed to see any mermaids, our trip was still worth the effort of getting in and out of that wetsuit.

ONLINE SHOPPING MADE EASY By Sydnee Bryant
Excited to try some of the gadgets found in this issue but not sure where to get them? Have them (or anything else that tickles your fancy) delivered to you in days through online shipping. We all know it can be tricky to find certain items in Qatar. But with an international shipping company in Doha, there is no reason to go without any of your favourite items from abroad. DHL, which opened in Qatar over 30 years ago, currently serves about 1,300 customers in this country alone, said Daniel Kearvell, country manager for DHL. The company offers door-to-door logistics and express services to companies and individuals. DHL offers a range of services and products for anyone that needs something done on a time-sensitive basis, said Kearvell.
An increasing amount of people in Qatar are using DHL’s online services to place their orders, track their delivery and continuously monitor the status of their delivery. DHL online is cheaper and faster than traditional services, said Kearvell. “The benefits of online are you can browse at your own convenience,” Kearvell said. If you buy something online today from the U.S. or U.K. and arrange to have it shipped through DHL’s Easy Shop system, you could have it delivered to Doha within two days.
In Qatar, 65 to 75 per cent of DHL’s shipments are booked online. In terms of the Middle East, Qatar is one’s of DHL’s Recently, the company began focusing on highest “e-penetration countries,” said improving their online services. DHL currently has a 52 per cent share in the market in Qatar but competition is steadily increasing as the country develops, said Kearvell. However, as the market becomes competitive, it forces companies to be more innovative and find ways to lower their prices in order to remain competitive, which is good for the customer. The company, which is currently in 224 countries around the world, recently added more customer service centres in Doha. DHL now has offices in Villaggio Mall and City Centre Mall, in addition to their location on Salwa Road. Last month DHL had four times the average registrations than they normally do. “It’s something that is really gaining steam,” Kearvell said. “Qatar is one of the fastest growing places in the DHL world.”

QH SENSATIONS LIVE
By Sydnee Bryant
We all need the occasional weekend getaway but we don’t always have the time or resources to actually leave town! Luckily, it is entirely possible to escape your everyday life without jumping on a jet plane. QH plays hooky for a weekend to enjoy a mini-vacay at the Four Seasons Doha.
I
t has always been my philosophy that if you are going to take time off of work, you should do it right. No running errands, doing laundry or cleaning house. Picking up the dry cleaning is not conducive to relaxing or refreshing your mental state. Instead, whenever you need some time away from the daily grind, you should spend it in new surroundings in order to truly benefit from your time off.
Recently my mother came to Doha from Canada to visit me. I used her trip as an opportunity to take a weekend vacation at the Four Seasons Doha. When we arrived at the Four Seasons Doha, we checked into a lovely corner room with a tranquil view of the water and the lush grounds of hotel’s outdoor area. We immediately began exploring our new home away from home. My mom called dibs on the comfy reading chair near the window, while I claimed the desk as my own. Even with two full-size beds, a chair, table and desk, the room didn’t feel at all crowded, as some hotel rooms often do. The room was somehow both elegant and completely liveable, although this should not have surprised me. The hotel always manages to balance that line between formal details and comfort. 60
We all know the bathroom is one of the most important parts of a hotel room (Is there a Jacuzzi tub? Will there be enough room at the vanity? What kind of products will I find in the shower?). Ours didn’t disappoint. There was not only a huge tub but also a spacious shower. The shower and tub were outfitted with luxurious L’Occitane En Provence products, including shower gel, soap, shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom also had a huge vanity, plenty big enough for at least two vain ladies (guilty as charged). It also had a private toilet area, meaning more than one person could be in the bathroom area at a time. But the overall bathroom does have its own sliding door to separate it from the bedroom and minikitchen area, ensuring total privacy. The mini-kitchen area featured an awesome coffee machine, pre-filled with water and complete with two complimentary coffee pods. I was stoked to try out a machine far fancier than my own. While it did take me two tries to make a cup of joe (despite the list of instructions on the machine), it was completely worth the effort. As a light sleeper, I was extremely excited to sleep in a super-comfy bed with delicate linens. But the best part of sleeping at the Four Seasons Doha was waking up; or, rather, not waking up with the sun. The
room’s thick green curtains prevented even a single drop of sunshine from streaming in our room until we decided we were ready to get up and open the curtains. After an extremely restful sleep, we headed down to Brassiere on the Beach for a free continental breakfast. The complimentary breakfast is a part of the hotel’s weekend getaway package – stay in one room and get the second room half price, plus continental breakfast and 25 per cent off any spa treatment at the Four Seasons Doha Spa and Wellness Centre. We devoured sweet pastries, yogurt, a variety of fruit, fresh orange juice and steaming hot coffee as the ideal start to our day. A leisurely stroll on the beach was the perfect way to spend the afternoon but a rejuvenating trip to the spa was the highlight of our day. We capped off the day with prompt room service and a movie. We took our time checking out the next day; while check out is normally at noon, the hotel’s weekend getaway package includes complimentary late checkout, meaning guests can stay as late as 6:00 p.m. before checking out. While we were reluctant to leave our oasis of relaxation, we took comfort in the fact that we could always return for another weekend of idyllic leisure.

It’s been said before that fashion designers are born, not made. And while that saying may be true, it doesn’t take into account all of the hard work that designers put into learning and honing their craft. This month QH celebrates the next wave of future fashion designers, the graduating senior fashion design class at VCUQ. Bekita Mubarak Muwangua
This fashion design graduate loves the unlimited freedom of creating something, of transforming an idea in her head into a tangible thing that people can wear and the satisfying feeling of watching people wear her designs. While it can be tricky to transform her ideas into garments, she is inspired by her trips overseas, her daily surroundings and her mom, who shares her love of fashion. “My favourite thing [about] designing is to experiment with different fabrics, shapes and silhouettes, and take my ideas further than what is expected of me," Bekita said. After graduation, she plans to find a job that will allow her to not only learn more about the fashion industry but also the chance to practise what she has learned. Born to a Nambian father and Qatari mother, Bekita plans on staying in Qatar after graduation. “As a tribute to my country, I would like to offer my services as a fashion designer to the locals and expatriates,” Bekita said. She hopes to create “feminine, elegant, yet simple, garments and leather goods” for a female client base. 62
SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION
Dana Elhaj Ahmad
This aspiring designer and fashion design grad, originally from Palestine, has Disney to thank for her passion for fashion. “It all started with Mickey Mouse,” Dana said. “Growing up I was constantly drawing this character wearing clothes, dresses and gowns. I would even accessorize him with hats, shoes and bow ties. Eventually my interest in how Mickey Mouse was styled took me further into the fashion world. I double majored in interior and fashion design with a continuous passion towards fashion. I relate to fashion more than anything in the world because I wear clothes everyday and through them I am able to express my aesthetic as an individual and illustrate it to the world of fashion. As an individual, I want to take all the black ink sketches out of my head and imagination, adding grungy, yet romantic, elements, splashing some colour and drag it down the runway for everyone to glimpse.”
Hissa Ismail Zainal
This fashion design grad loves dressing people and expressing her ideas in an “unusual and elaborate way.” While it can be hard coming up with new and “original” ideas, the budding designer says she loves experiencing new things and looking for things that are different from what she already knows. Originally from Qatar, Hissa would love to start new projects revolving around fashion in Qatar post-graduation. “I don’t see myself elsewhere; it’s not that I don’t love working abroad but I think I have a lot to give back. And Qatar is offering a lot for future designers,” Hissa said. She hopes to one day get her masters in fashion design and merchandising. Hissa wants to create clothes that are “fun to wear but elegant at the same time.” She wants to be a world-renowned designer but, for now, would love to try styling. Meeting crazy deadlines during her VCU fashion design program helped her realize that she would be able to one day survive in the fashion design world.
Selina Farooqui
This young designer has already found some success in the fashion world. The collection she designed for VCUQ’s annual fashion show in 2010 was bought by Cugini, a local boutique at The Pearl-Qatar. “The sale of the collection was a success and that was the start of my fashion brand and business “Selina Farooqui,” and I have not looked back since,” Selina said. After graduation, she will work on her second collection for Cugini, due on the shelves in the Autumn/Winter season of 2011. The designer also plans on opening an online store for her designs. Selina, who is originally from India, plans on staying to take advantage of Qatar’s growing fashion scene. Selina can’t image a life as anything but a designer. “I wouldn’t be myself; I can’t imagine not doing what I'm doing,” Selina said. “This is my passion, this is what I want to pursue for the rest of my life.” 63
SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION
Reem Al-Hajri
After her life took an unexpected turn five years ago, Reem turned to fashion design. “I am ambitious, curious and passionate about design; and in fashion design I’ve found a challenge that reinvents itself and I love that,” Reem said. “When it comes to fashion design, I love being able to transform a feeling/personality/experience/theme/idea into a reflective tangible form. Clothing is reflective of who we were, are and want to be; I love the quiet impact of something we use every day and that I get to create it.” After graduation, Reem plans to be a “graphic designer by day, fashion designer by night.” She aspires to make “beautifully-made, thoughtful work, the kind that turns heads and makes you think; detailed, conceptual and well-crafted.” The designer, who is originally from Bahrain, sees the fashion industry in Qatar as an opportunity for young designers and entrepreneurs to become fashion pioneers. Fashion inspirations include Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Yamamoto and Kenzo.
Modawi Mohammed Al Ansari This fashion design student plans to venture out into the world of fashion retailing and merchandising after graduation. She enjoys “constructing and sewing a design and seeing the final result as a success.” Modawi wants to take her chances in the local fashion field but prefers to stay away from designing traditional Qatari garments like Abayas. Instead, she adores designing conservative evening gowns and wedding dresses. Modawi, who leads a busy life as a mother, employee, business owner and student, wants to gain the trust of clients in a local market. If she wasn’t heading into the fashion realm, she would choose to be a stay-athome-mom.
64
Carla Mallari
This fashion senior loves to constantly create and invent things. “Fashion is just another output for me to get my creativity out there,” Carla said. She loves playing around with possibility and doesn’t shy away from mistakes. Designing is a challenge because it “involves a lot of problem solving,” including trying to make clothes that are functional, in addition to fashionable. The Filipina fashion design student is inspired by modern and contemporary art and loves to create ready-to-wear garments for women, with a “fresh, modern and quirky take.” She has plenty of plans for the future, including staying in Qatar to help develop the fashion industry, doing a masters degree in modern and contemporary art history and starting her own fashion line. Carla hopes to “gain as much experience as possible, from production to designing, to owning and starting my own line. I like to make stuff and I’d like to make a living out of it.”
Vanja Smitran
Making women feel beautiful is this fashion designer’s goal. Born in Bosnia and raised in the U.S., Vanja gets her ideas from paintings, movies, nature, history and past mistakes she’s made while creating things. She also finds inspiration in the history of Qatar, plus the country’s deserts. Vanja loves the idea of seeing someone wearing her designs on the street and plans to move to New York to find her footing as a new designer. One of her challenges as a designer is “finding new inspiration that influences her enough to break barriers.” She hopes to touch lives as designer but if she wasn’t creating pragmatic and whimsical clothes, she would be happy to be a farmer. Her memories of her time as a fashion design student at VCUQ include long sleepless nights that were both “tiring but incredibly fun at the same time.”
SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION
Ahmed Hamada El-Sayed
Ahmed will make history as the first male to graduate from VCUQ’s fashion design program. This fashion pioneer was destined to design from childhood. “Watching my mother getting all dressed up going out played a large role in me wanting to be a designer and dress people more like her,” Ahmed said. He strives to design “anything I want for anyone I want” and uses his imagination and determination to finish what he starts. “Seeing the end result from sketching a garment to actually seeing it on the runway is the best accomplishment I can think of,” Ahmed said. He finds inspiration in the female body, from women with everlasting curves to more androgynous figures. He isn’t sure if he will stay in Qatar after graduation but hopes to make his mark on the world as a designer. “I would like to share with people my vision, whether it is in a lifestyle I create or in a clothing item that I make,” Ahmed said. “To be recognized through my work would be my greatest accomplishment; it has not happened yet, but that is my ultimate goal.”
Kaltham Al Kuwari
Kaltham never actually planned to become a fashion design student but somehow that is exactly where she ended up. She originally intended to become an interior design student but ended up in fashion design instead. Her love of creating “something out of nothing” has led to interesting design concepts, such as an Abaya based on a Japanese cartoon. “I get my ideas from everything around me,” Kaltham said. She plans on staying in the country after graduation. “The fashion design business is still relatively small in Qatar, and it needs years and years to become at least known in the gulf region,” Kaltham said. She loves making conservative cocktail dresses and hopes that one day people will be able to recognize her clothes without having to check the label first. The fashion grad is also considering pursuing a master’s degree in art history and says if she wasn’t a fashion designer, she would be a museum curator.
Esra Sharab
Esra decided to become a fashion designer during her foundation year at VCUQ. This Palestinian-New Zealander came to understand the female figure during her drawing fundamentals class. “What I love most about designing is the freedom of it all,” Esra said. “I strongly believe that there are no boundaries when it comes to design. The sky really is the limit!" She finds inspiration in people, life and living itself. Her senior collection was inspired by her summer internship in Istanbul. “My collection is derived from the ethnic prints of a Turkish Kilim,” Esra said. “I love geometric shapes and bold patterns; it is something I grew very accustomed to while walking in downtown Istanbul’s raw and crowded Grande Bazaars. Life inspires fashion!” While she hopes to work with a fashion house in Istanbul or Dubai one day, she would also love to work in Qatar. “Qatar is a blossoming city with unlimited potential,” Esra said. “I cannot wait to be a part of what makes the fashion scene come alive here in Doha. I am looking forward to the future and what it has to offer me.” 65

Sports should be mainly about having fun and enjoying some quality time with friends. QH tells you which sporting event will give you plenty reasons to leave the house this month. Corona Water Volleyball is a special event taking place by the beach, where the biggest reward will be having a very good time under the sun.
CORONA WATER VOLLEYBALL Sporting events nowadays are aimed to be extravagant and profitable happenings. Athletes are specially focused on making millions of dollars in endorsement deals and becoming famous personalities worldwide. But the essence of sports is not about money or fame. It is about getting together with a group of friends or strangers for the pure joy of playing a discipline you like. Expecting a big paycheque, a Rolex or a Ferrari as a reward is not the real intention behind practising any sport. The Corona Water Volleyball event is bringing back the true spirit of playing a game. The event is an open tournament that will celebrate passion for volleyball and the fun that comes with doing something for pure entertainment. The volleyball championship is set to take place Friday, April 1 till Saturday, April 2 at the beach of the InterContinental Doha from 2:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m.
Since 2009, the InterContinental Doha has hosted beach-related sporting events aimed to motivate people to participate in healthy outdoors activities. Emir’s Cup
If you are a horse lover, then you only have two more months to appreciate the majesty and splendor of these animals in full action. The Emir’s Cup is one of the last events taking place before the season ends in mid-May.
M
any equestrian events have taken place during the 2010-2011 season. The season kicked off last October with horse races at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club. The first important meeting was the National Day Trophy & The Late Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani Cup, as well as the Qatar Derby Day in November. Last month, the biggest horse festival in Qatar, the H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar Festival, brought joy and thrilling moments to fans of the sport. Let’s not forget the Global Champions Tour that also took place in March. But before the season ends in May, horse lovers still have a chance to head off to the horse tracks and witness some action.
The best local riders and horses in Doha will come together at the 4th edition of the Emir’s Cup, aiming to win big prize money and trophy.

Entrance for the event is free for the two days of the competition. Spectators at the Emir’s Cup will have the unique opportunity to be part of two days of exhilarating show jumping events, while watching Qatar’s top-ranked riders competing in the biggest local horse show jumping event.
