A whopping 50,000 fans filled the stands of Khalifa Stadium on November 14th for the Brazil versus England Friendly game, proving that Qatar is serious about its football and bid for the 2022 World Cup. However, the real excitement transpired afterwards when hundreds of fans celebrating the Algeria versus Egypt match jammed the streets with flags and adrenaline in tow. December brings a different kind of sport of global scale as 2,000 athletes from 42 nations are expected to compete in athletics, gymnastics and swimming at Aspire. Solid information was virtually impossible to confirm at the time of printing, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for last minute details as gymnastics, in particular, has proven to gather sell-out crowds in Qatar. People behind the scenes for the Qatar National Day have whispered in our ears about the December 18th celebrations expanding to multiple locations. Organizers have kept the details under wraps again this year. Check newspapers and www.qatarhappening.com closer to the time for details. New Years celebration plans push forward, albeit lower key than in the past due to the new regulations. QH features special ways of celebrating Christmas in Qatar for the entire family. Happy National Day Qatar!

QH RECOMMENDS

s Deck the halls with things that please us! QH brings you the thing we’re metaphorically hoping to find shoved in stockings and wearing bows under our tree this year. The Best Forgotten Christmas Special Ever

A Mullet-y Piece of Home

If you’re celebrating the holiday season in Doha and claymation reindeer aren’t popping up on your screen, YouTube has you covered with copies of some of the best specials from bygone eras of weird (i.e. the 80s). Our fav? The Muppet Family Christmas, a special that includes all of Jim Henson’s bug eyed creations. Swedish Chef tries to cook Big Bird, The Fraggles freak out Doc’s dog, Ms. Piggy goes on the hunt for fuzzy green flipper slippers for Kermit, and there’s foamy frolicking as far as the eye can see.

Many of us living in Qatar aren’t from here, and sometimes, you just want that little taste of home. A special meal, a familiar song, a locally made TV show, or some idiot in a bizarre t-shirt with a mullet. Thanks to the net-goblins at www.peopleofwalmart.com we can revel in the horror, the wonder and the glory that is white-trash weirdness as it lurks the halls of Wal-Marts the world over, even from abroad!

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix The latest album from the most un-French sounding French band, Phoenix, featuring your standard, boy-next-door Parisian... who um, seems to own only one shirt. Regardless of sartorial deficiencies, it’s like someone smoothed out the garageband edges and surgically removed the poorly-thought-out emo hair from other indie groups, leaving nothing but catchy melodies and awesome lyrics behind. Oh, and you may learn something too, with songs and lyrics rife with historical connotations, from Franz Liszt to the Eiffel tower. They’re available on iTunes.

Hackings and Slashings Away!

The Book Of Negroes Read. This. Now. Telling the story of Aminata, stolen from her village in Africa and sold into slavery in the United States, this book takes you through transatlantic crossings to the establishment of Freetown in Sierra Leone and back. With forays into the British Abolition movement and the real-life Book Of Negros, a ledger that contains the names of hundreds of black loyalists who traveled to Atlantic Canada looking for freedom during the American Revolution. Check out Amazon.com for copies.

Your standard hack and slash game, with cartoonish and smoother hackings and slashings. From the same guys who made Diablo 2, this one gives the Diablo fanboy a temporary Diablo Hack’n Slash fix while waiting for Diablo 3 to come out. Or screw Diablo 3 all together and stick with Torchlight, who have plans of expanding to MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) and is bundling their game editor so you can make your own game! One complaint: it currently does not support multiplayer. Check out Amazon.com for copies.

QH RECOMMENDS

Deck the Halls with Something Sparkly The holidays are fast approaching, and filled with frantic panic of last-minute shoppers on the hunt for that perfect stocking stuffer. Never fear, oh confused consumer, M.A.C has you covered. This year they’ve launched several ready-to-go makeup kits, as well as three different brush sets, for different parts of the face– perfect for those confused fathers and husbands who don’t want to get that special girl yet another bottle of bubble bath. They’ve also got a full line of glitzy glam makeup ideal for bedazzling yourself for that holiday soiree, if you’re in the giving-presents-to-yourself mood. We gave their Dazzleglass lip gloss in She-zam,

Lights, Camera, Action!

and their Softsparkle eye pencil in Nightsky a whirl and both more than lived up to our high expectations for stuff we smear on our faces. The eye pencil creates a soft, dark grey shimmer when worn alone, and adds extra pop if layered over eyeshadow. The gloss, in a incandescent silver, is great for darker skin tones on it’s own, and if you’re of the pale persuasion, looks good layered over last year’s matte red lipsticks. Its slightly sticky consistency means it may even survive the mistletoe. Best part? They both managed to have holiday glitter that stayed where you put it, unlike many other products whose end result mostly resembles what would happen if a disco ball sneezed. But be sure to use makeup remover – like most M.A.C. products, this has a never-come-off-till-you’re-dead-andmaybe-even-longer vibe to it!

Film buff or not, there’s definitely a reason to celebrate and jump for joy with the opening of Villaggio’s mega offering, a multiplex, comprised of 13 screens and an Imax theatre. That’s enough to make our mouths water. A sizeable counter for food and beverage greet hungry movie-goers as they enter the venue, located beside a coffee chain that offers a wake-me-upper for those who want catch the last show. And as you journey through the halls and into your theatre, the dim lights help you prepare for the big show itself. With each step you take, you actually appreciate that carpet because it helps you not to worry about the sticky floors. Big thumbs up! Besides, given that it just recently opened, giving something new a try wouldn’t hurt. Come on, we know you want to. Check out all the weeekly listings and schedules, as well as trailers at www.qatarhappening.com

Delicious, Delicious Snow Yearning for the white mush called snow while you’re stuck in Doha during the holiday season? We’ve found something delicious that comes close to it: Halo-Halo, a cold sweet treat that bleeds rainbows and milk. The sight itself is brimming with that cheery, Christmas-y sensation mainly because of its ingredients: sweet palm fruit, silky coconut, jackfruit, mung beans, banana-like plantain, purple yam, flan, corn, gelatin, pearls similar to boba and ice cream, milk, and tons of shaved ice. Warning: your mouth will be frozen by the time you’re done. The name literally means ‘mix mix’, which is how you eat it- grab a spoon and start smashing! It’s almost as good as catching snowflakes on your tongue (just don’t eat the yellow snow). Get a bite of the frost in newly opened Chowking located in Commercial Centre building on Salwa Road. 14

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

T

here’s a lot more going on with German music than polkas, lederhosen, and disturbing death metal. Over the last few years, German artists have emerged on the forefront of the Hip Hop and RnB scene, particularly by artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. Beirut, Massiv, Bintia, DJ Desue and Keyali are as different as their music is rockoutable. And that makes them perfect for Doha.

“(My music) is pretty much urban oriented at this point, trying to create a different sound with my various musical influences. Being of a multi-cultural background allows me to approach music from a different angle,” said Keyali, who’s French German. Beirut, as the name indicates, is Lebanese German, Bintia is Guinea German and Massiv is Palestinian German while DJ Desue represents German music. “Music has reached such an international level that it’s no longer about where it comes from – it’s about how good it is and how much people can relate to it,” she said. That’s something they can all agree on, which they hope to bring to Doha. But that doesn’t mean they don’t also want to represent a bit of Germany. “I do only German music, because I think it needs more attention worldwide,” said Massive. “(I’m inspired by) my hood, my society and everything I listen to and everything I see.”

Fo’ Shizzle. The artists will perform, first at the outdoor concert, and then the DJs take the stage at The After Party.

This is the first time all them have been to Doha, except for Keyali. Her parents have lived here for almost 20 years. She says she’s excited to be back, and experience the Qatari music scene.

16

DEC 09 final.indd 16

11/25/09 10:01:56 AM

“...it’s about how good it is and how much people can relate to it.” “Having experienced Doha from an early age, I’m able to proudly represent both sides of the coin, as they’re both cultures that I feel are a part of me,” she said. The music runs the gauntlet from classic 90s influenced Hip Hop to Rap, with danceable rhythms thrown in the middle for good measure. “It is honest, good music from real life,” said Massiv, who’s one of the biggest names on the bill, and falls into the category of ‘German Gangsta rap’. That realism is something they all strive for. “Every time I think about how my life would be if I were to never perform or record a song again, I feel a void whereas when I’m singing or doing anything music related I feel like I am lifted to another realm,” said Keyali. “I compare it to nirvana people meditate to eventually reach one day – and I can do that just by letting myself into music. So I keep going, if it gets hard I remember the void and so it is easy to choose nirvana.” She’s hoping that’s a feeling they can bring to Doha. “I have had a couple of gigs in Doha before and it went quite well – let’s hope it just keeps getting better,” she said. “As for the idea of a festival, it’s a brand new concept in Doha, so people will definitely go, even if it’s just out of curiosity – it’s something pleasant and different. I actually think people will enjoy themselves. They hit the stage on December 3rd outside Aspire, starting at 6:00 p.m. The show is free so line up early! It runs till 8:30 p.m., followed by the After Party at the Sheraton. This is a 21 plus event. For more information, check out www.hiwaruna.com

VIRGIN RECOMMENDS

Here’s how you can find out what’s hot: QH brings you the top selections from Virgin Megastore this month.

BOOKS The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir’s father’s servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule.

MUSIC Michael Bublé

Crazy Love Michael Bublé’s back, with ‘Crazy Love’, his first CD in two and a half years. The multiGrammy winning artist hunkered down in recording studios in LA, Brooklyn, New York and his hometown of Vancouver for the last six months to make his ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships.

MOVIES Public Enemies

Since crime auteur Michael Mann, like his protagonists, plays by his own rules, Public Enemies eschews back story and motivation for a closelyobserved, action-packed examination of men at work. FBI supremo J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) kick-starts a nationwide manhunt when he proclaims John Dillinger (Johnny Depp, in top form) Public Enemy #1. Hoover taps Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to bring the Tommy Gun-toting bank robber in by any means necessary.

GAMES Pro Evolution 2010

New to the Pro Evolution Soccer series is an exclusive UEFA Champions League license. The UEFA Champions League is Europe’s greatest club competition, and the license means the game has all the elements and attributes of the Champion League Competition.

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE

By Jessica Davey-Quantick

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra opened their second season recently. QH catches up with Kurt Meister, Manager Director, as the Orchestra turns 1.

M

usic has the power to change the world. Or at the very least, make it a more pleasant place to live in.

“Music is emotions. If you look at a picture, you can do something, but music is around you. Music opens emotions I think, and if you go to the concert you are really immersed in the big sound and you can forget many things during this time. All your problems are behind you,” said Meister, sitting in the lobby of the Ladies Gym at Aspire. Around him, workers quickly prepare for that evening’s opening concert. And through the doors of the performance hall music swells, drifting out into the hallway and down the dusty Doha streets. And that’s something Meister says Doha needs. “We do it for the people. We’ve had really good feedback from the audience. And many people are happy that we’ve started again with the concerts,” he said. “Perhaps I’m wrong, but many people decide to go to a country or a city because of what is around. It’s not only economic – it’s what is happening with culture, what can I do on my days off.”

22

DEC 09 final.indd 22

Maestro. Kurt Meister says he’s helped set up orchestras before, but nothing ever like the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since they started last year, they’ve played everything from Wagner to the James Bond theme (complete with sunglasses) to packed houses. That alone, Meister says, is a triumph.

11/25/09 10:02:46 AM

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE Multicultural Musical Magic. With over 100 different musicians from all over the world, the orchestra is as unique as Doha.

“To go to another country to convince people to come and be part of a new project, it hasn’t been easy but I think the result is not bad. It’s really good,” he said. “It’s difficult to explain what a symphony orchestra (is). We don’t play only old music. We also play contemporary music. But the orchestra is not new – we have to play all the masterpieces, we have to play some Arabic music. We have to find the bridge between both cultures. A good start is the musicians themselves. With over 100 different musicians from all over the world, the Orchestra looks like Doha in microcosm; a mish mash of nationalities joining together to create something.

you can relax. The sound is limited if it’s on the radio or a CD, but you come here and listen to a huge orchestra of 100 musicians, it’s much different.” They’ve reached out especially to children, hosting many concerts and programs over the summer specifically to draw them in and teach them about music. Many of the musicians themselves started when they were kids, so exposing youth to Orchestra music is something they all agree can only be a good thing.

“I was just ready for a new adventure basically. There were jobs anywhere else, but this seemed so nice because you knew that there were only people here who were young and adventurous and basically wanted to start an orchestra from nothing,” said Joris Laenen, a Belgian trumpet player “We gave them some CDs with the program with the orchestra. “That’s an opportunity of the concert, and I’ve had many calls you never get because most orchestras are from the parents that the children came already there.” immediately into the car and said ‘mummy please put the CD in’,” said Meister. Having that chance to see music performed live, by such a large ensemble, is something That’s where many of the muscians started really unique, and what Meister says keeps themselves – with a piece of music on people coming back. the stereo. “You have a movie, you can go away “At some point, every musician, you for some minutes, but (here) they’re start with passion,” said Laenen. “As a concentrated on the stage. You’re not child you’re so fascinated by this music; distracted by anything, you can concentrate, somehow you have to be bitten by it.”

It’s not just the kids that are learning though. Many of the pieces selected are multi-layered, with unique histories behind the music itself, or stories built into the sweeping melodies and pounding percussion lines that most people may not know. Meister says they had great success having conductors explain the pieces to the audience. “It’s information and the people like it. You you can follow the words then listen to the music, and think ‘oh yes I know what’s going on there’,” he said. Drawing people into the music, and letting them feel a part of something larger, says Meister, is really the whole point. “People say now ‘there’s an orchestra in Qatar’. It would be great if in five years people say ‘we have an orchestra in Qatar’,” he said. Check out www.qatarhappening. com for updated listings of coming concerts and performances by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. 23

Congratulations, you’ve just witnessed a cene: standing in line at Flash Mob. Subway, surrounded by other ravenous food-court-niks, when suddenly, the PA system “I think it’s nice to catch everyone off guard,” said Rosie Griffiths, one of the dancers. “It’s erupts with bollywood beats, just a bit of entertainment for your day, isn’t and a girl jumps up from her table to bust it?” a move.

Seconds later, more people join her, shaking and shimmying their way across the tiled floor, until there are six people dancing in perfect choreographed bliss under the florescent lights. Then, just as suddenly as it began, it’s over, the participants disappearing into the crowd like fairy dust after someone finally swatted Tinkerbell.

It’s more than that. The staged ones at City Centre were part of Doha Tribeca Film Festival, with members of the Manu Laude Dance Company traveling from the UK to perform. But Flash Mobs have taken on a life of their own (and taken over Youtube) as spontaneous eruptions of art, reclaiming public spaces with impromptu displays of weird. Essentially, a Flash Mob is any activity done out of the blue, by a group of people, in a public place. 25

But others describe it as a way to bring art, particularly dance, to the everyday. It has less to do with conformity and more to do with building communities – even across borders- in an increasingly isolated digital age. “It’s a bit like those classic musical movies where everybody is sitting, having lunch and stuff, and then the song comes up and everybody starts to dance on the table,” said Manu Laude, head of the company. “People love this type of thing, And to see it live and in reality, it’s extremely surprising. But in a nice way. Everybody loves music, everybody loves dancing.”

Flashers. A Flash Mob is essentially any activity done out-of-the-blue by a group of people in a public space.

“They’re definitely very popular at the moment,” said Stefan Puxom, another member of the group. “I suppose it’s just something completely out of the ordinary isn’t it? You’re doing your own thing, minding your own life, and suddenly something completely different happens. It’s striking.” Flash Mobs take many forms- from mass pillow fights and zombie parades to pirate battles and choreographed dance numbers. You don’t even have to move to create a Flash Mob- one of the most well known was called ‘Frozen Grand Central’, where several hundred people froze in place in the middle of Grand Central station in New York city for five minutes. Other famous examples

As Flash Mobs have grown in popularity and caught more and more Internet attention (all hail YouTube), the standards for them have risen, becoming examples of theatre meeting the real world. Pieces like ‘Improv Everywhere’s’ Supermarket Musical have more to do with injecting a little bit of whimsy into day-to-day life than 1984-style Borg behaviour. They’re also an easy way for people to bring live art and street theatre to the forefront of the community. Flash Mobs effectively break down the ivory-walls of the art world; bringing music, dance and performance art off the stage and onto the sidewalk.

QH catches up with one of the international top chefs at the Sharq Village and Spa’s Good Life Festival to find out what makes good food, and what it takes to be the tattooed wunderkind (or red headed step child) of the cooking world. Chef Michael Voltaggio knows good eats. With budda beads, spiky hair and tattoos, he looks more like The Lizard King than a top chef – but that’s exactly what he is. Recently competing on season six of Bravo’s Top Chef, he’s also the cuisine virtuoso at The Langham, Huntington Hotel and spa in Pasadena, California. He brought his unique brand of food to Doha as part of the Sharq Village and Spa’s Good Life Festival last month. “I do modern food with a global influence. I take food from all over the world, but apply new techniques,” he said. “So I take a food you may have had before, but in a way you’ve never had it.” You can say that again. For the opening cocktail reception of the Good Life Festival, where all the participating chefs tried to wow the crowds with their signature dishes, he took liquid nitrogen to gazpacho, making something the consistency of tomato ice cream in front of the guests. 29 DEC 09 final.indd 29

Chefs do it with relish. Voltaggio says one of the best parts of events like The Good Life Festival is getting to cook with chefs from all over the world, and learn what they bring to the table.

“You taste authenticity, authenticity of skill. There’s the term ‘that person’s fake, that person’s real’- you can taste that on a plate,” he said. And authenticity is something that doesn’t necessarily come with a price tag or complicated parsley mountains. Nor does it necessarily have to look like what we think it should. He’s one of the top chefs messing with the public’s culinary perceptions by presenting dishes that fool the senses, either in texture or flavour combinations. And he’s getting accolades from diners and other chefs alike for his foodie houdinism. “They start to speak to me in French because they think I’m French because I know what I’m doing!” he said. “They tell me it’s rare to meet an American chef with such passion.” That’s what he says sets food apart. “I think what makes good food is when you can taste the passion and soul of the person who made it. Think of a bowl of cereal- it’s flat. But if someone made something with care and passion, even just a sandwich, you can taste it,” he said. “As a chef you have to figure out a way to make it exciting for that person, even if they’ve ordered something like porridge. It reminds you you’re alive.”

Goodbye and Goodluck. Voltaggio and the others may be going home, but Chef Christophe of Al Dana stays on.

when harry met shelina

Author Shelina Zahra Janmohamed recently visited Doha to talk about her new book, Love In A Headscarf: Muslim Woman Seeks the One. QH caught up with her about why we should read it, and why it’s more than just a good story.

T

The first line on the back of the book jacket says it all: ‘At the age of thirteen, I knew I was destined to marry John Travolta.’ For Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, that lined summed up her experience growing up as an Asian Muslim in Britain, and her reasons for writing her first novel, Love in a Headscarf.

“Britain is a very interesting place to be growing up because it has a huge heritage of connections with different countries around the world. I can’t possibly feel anything else, because I was born and brought up there, I went to school there, and I work there. And in many ways, that is the primary identifier I carry wherever I go into the world. But part of that identity is understanding the values that drive me, and that comes from my faith,” she said. “For many years I found it very confusing, trying to work out was I first British or was I first Muslim or first Asian. And I think there are some people who in their bid for black and white answers want to know what you are first. But for me, I’m not first anything- I’m everything, just something more at different times than other. I think we’ve come to a 32

place in the discussion about ethnicity and faith and religions and race, that we can actually talk about an identity which has many layers. I call it a hyphenated identity, because you can be all those different things at the same time, or only one of them at any one time.” But even though she could be all those things, she wasn’t seeing it around her; particularly not in print. “I remember one day I went into this bookshop, which was just across the way from where I lived, and they were doing a special table where they’d collected all the books about Muslim women. I remember looking at those books, and they were just women who all had veils over their faces, and they were stories of being kidnapped and stories of being sold and stories of running away from home. And I remember looking at this table of stories and thinking none of them look like me,” she said. “They were all stories of things that had happened to women, but none of them were my story. I just felt like if my story was going to be on that table, then I would have to tell it because nobody else was telling it. And that’s when I decided to write the book that I did.”

So far it’s met with excellent reception, from both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Even major news outlets in the UK and the USA, on radical ends of the spectrum, have weighed in positively on the book. “It’s a bit naughty isn’t it, to talk about love? In a way that’s exactly why I chose that topic. I wanted people to look at the book and raise an eyebrow and think ‘love? Headscarves? Muslim women?’ and immediately create a change in expectations for a new idea that Muslim women somehow aren’t allowed to engage in love, or that somehow are oppressed into turning away from it. When actually, when we’re talking about romantic and marital love, there’s so much emphasis on that within the Muslim and my own Asian culture. The only idea is it comes after you 33

Perusing his menu, most dishes are remarkably simple sounding, with one or two ingredients clearly telling you exactly what will come out of the kitchen. That, he says, is the point.

That’s not a stretch – Kranakis says true Mediterranean food goes beyond Greece, incorporating the whole region. Many countries, as different as France, Italy, and Lebanon, end up sharing a similar culinary heritage.

“Greek cuisine and Arabic cuisine are very similar. If you go back in history, there are a lot of similarities in Greek and Arabic. It’s “When you’re tasting something and you just the name that makes the difference,” he says, pointing to several dishes on his have 10 ingredients on your plate, you mix menu that will look startlingly familiar when everything, you don’t have a sense of what you’re eating,” he said. And just like much Arabic food, it’s also incredibly healthy. That’s why you can go to any city in the world and find at least one Greek or Mediterranean restaurant.

“I have read once in a French newspaper that the Cretan food is the healthiest food in the world, because it’s bread, seeds, tomatoes and olives. We cook with olive oil and herbs. Its not very heavy, we don’t use a lot of butter, a lot of heavy cream,” he said. “It’s simplicity.” Customers at Mykonos can expect dishes following that tradition, and taking advantage of local produceespecially the fish. “They can expect light dishes. We are taking advantage of Doha’s fish and the fish the market can provide us,” said Kranakis. “I wouldn’t say that I have a favourite item, as I was born and raised in the Mediterranean, but I prefer when I go out to eat fish.” What sets Mediterranean cuisine, and Mykonos, apart however, is quality. Kranakis says that because the food is so simple, the ingredients take centre stage- and can radically affect the way it feels on your tongue. “It’s about the purity of the ingredients. I mean when you’re taking the tomatoes you’re using the tomatoes as they are. That’s how we buy it, we give it straight to the customer. We don’t combine a lot of things. This is very important, the simplicity. It’s nice. If you want to make for example a very good Greek salad, which is the famous thing, you have to use the proper cheese, you have to use the proper oregano, which is of course not the same here in Qatar. We’ve brought it in from Greece because it’s completely different. This is the secret,” he said. “It’s just simplicity, and sometimes simplicity is very difficult. The Mediterranean kitchen is clearly pure ingredients. It’s the pure thing that nature is producing and we use it accordingly.” Check out Mykonos at the InterContinental, or call 484-4444 for more information.

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS

By Jessica Davey-Quantick

Serena Williams bares all, in her new autobiography, on the cover of ESPN magazine and on the court. And she might not get to play in 2010 because of it. QH checks in with her on what she does, why she does it, and if it’s worth it, bringing you a story that almost didn’t make it into print.

S

erena Williams is one of the world’s best tennis players. This year, she set a single-season prize money record on the women’s tour by earning $6,545,586 and she’s got a trophy shelf groaning under the weight of titles, medals and awards– the latest from the Sony Ericsson Championships held in Doha in October.

“It’s always nice to have pairs,” she said, after winning all of her round-robin matches at the WTA Sony Ericsson Championships, and regaining her first place ranking. She’s been playing almost her whole life, coached by her parents and playing alongside- and against– older sister Venus. “I feel like it’s one of the reasons I don’t stop because I really truly love it. I don’t do it for, you know, the money, I don’t do it for the fame, I just do it because I like it.” And some people would prefer we just leave it at that. But off the court, there is so much more, and she’s more than happy to share. She’s designed handbags and jewelry and started her own fashion line, ‘Aneres’, appeared on television shows like Law and Order and the Simpsons, and has even popped up in music videos and commercials, while still finding time to write her autobiography, On The Line. 53 DEC 09 final.indd 53

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS

“For me, I don’t’ think I can play tennis for another 50 years. So there’s gong to be a big question mark as to what I do after my career is over,” she said. “I love writing, and being in front of the camera. So I guess that would be like acting. I also love being an entrepreneur whether it’s designing clothes, or handbags, jewelry, accessories and things like that.” Her efforts off-court are what are making waves these days, both officially and in the blogosphere. Her book deals frankly with her life – the ups, the downs, and the skeletons in the closet. Including her own: she recently bared all for ESPN magazine’s Body Issue, a move that’s had the internet abuzz with commentary.

“I feel like it’s one of the reasons I don’t stop because I really truly love it. I don’t do it for, you know, the money, I don’t do it for the fame, I just do it because I like it.”

But Williams, who’s never been one to shy away from refreshing realism, whether by bemoaning the size of her thighs to People magazine or referring to herself as ‘bootylicious’, doesn’t care. “I really liked the photo of me. I thought it was going to be great, I thought the concept would be great, that it was a body issue. I wasn’t really nude, but it looked like I was,” she said. “When they actually offered, I was really happy and I think they’re really happy too. I thought it was cool they wanted me to do it, because I’m not a size 0 and I’ll probably never be. But I thought it was just fun to have someone that’s curvy on the cover.”

54

DEC 09 final.indd 54

11/25/09 10:10:49 AM

Having an athletic, curvy model on the cover of a magazine is a little different. Most magazines still tend to gravitate towards drip-fed-anorexic sized models, with nary a muscle or curve in sight. In her photographs for ESPN, Serena shines, from her bright smile to her artfully posed body that reveals nothing, yet shows the important part: that she’s healthy, she’s athletic, and like most of the world, she’s not a size two. And that could get her in trouble. This isn’t the first time she’s posed au natural (that would be with a much more revealing shot in Jane magazine in 2007), but it could cost her her next season, not to mention $500,000. According to the Hindustan Times, the International Tennis Federation would prefer she’d kept her pants on this time. The ITF might not allow her to play in the 2010 Australian Open, despite her current ranking as number one, fine her $500,000 and even ban her entirely. Public sentiment is a bit more mixed, with commentators chiming in on both sides over whether the shoot was another win for the tennis great. Whatever it was, it wasn’t unique: others have beaten her to the punch, most recently Ashley Harkleroad who posed completely nude, as well as graced the cover, of Playboy in August 2008. She’s the second professional tennis player to do so, after Vanessa Menga did it in Playboy Brazil in 2001. Harkleroad took 2009 off to have a baby, but has plans for a comeback in 2010. Most famously, Anna Kournikova may not be spread across magazine pages, but she has faced criticism from the public for using her looks instead of her talent to get attention. Question is, would anyone care if it were Roger Federer’s naked chest on the newsstands? He may not have done it (although the internet is full of shots of him playing and working out topless) but Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo, both Spanish players, frolicked in the buff in British Cosmopolitan in 2008 to raise awareness for their Everyman Campaign, focused on male cancer. Both tennis officials and the public at large were happily– quiet about these shots. “Yeah you definitely never hear about what Roger’s wearing,” said Williams. “But I guess it is a different standard. It’s just the way the world is, women are different than men, and I guess that’s just how it is. Who knows when it will change or if it will ever change?”

COLOUR SCOPE

Red is the warmest of all colours in the colour spectrum. It represents energy, life, passion and action. Red means power, hence the reason for the red power tie and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs. People who love red are extroverted and outspoken. By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

Nature of Red: Many colour studies have shown

that red is in fact a stimulant that has a physical effect on the human brain. It actually enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure! Why do you think they use red and red orange in most Italian restaurants? Or why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red? Red is an emotionally intense colour. A flashing red light denotes danger or emergency in every country around the world.

Wearing Red: In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy,

and celebration. Red is the colour of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck. Chinese brides wear the colour to get married, while it is the colour of mourning in South Africa. In Russia the Bolsheviks used a red flag when they overthrew the Tsar, thus red became associated with communism. Wear red when you want to give your ego a boost or whenever you need to portray confidence. However, be aware that wearing too much red can make a person come off a little too intimidating to others who may lack self confidence in themselves.

e energy around you. th e as re inc to life ur yo in d re e m Put so your dreams. r te af go to e nc de nfi co e th u yo Red gives In early the 15th century, red dye was very expensive and therefore the colour of royalty. It was produced from the blood of the Cochineal insect found in Mexico and cultivated by the indigenous tribes of Central and South America. It was then exported to most of Europe and at one time was highly prized commercially.

Using Red: Use red to grab attention and to get people to

take action. A little bit of red goes a long way. Small doses can often be more effective than large amounts of this strong colour. Multiple shades of red and even pink or orange can combine for a cheerful palette. Although not normally considered an ideal coupling, in combination with green, red is a Christmas colour. Cool blues provide contrast and tone down the heat of red. Pinks and yellows are colours that harmonize with red, if not too close in value such as dark red with a pale or golden yellow. Add a dash of red to a soft but sophisticated pink and grey combo.

The more you like red, the less tolerance you have for failure or incompetence .

The less you like red,

the more you will tolerate things that you do not enjoy.
