2011 is off to a great start, with tons of sports, entertainment and interesting community activities happening in Qatar. If the rest of the year continues like it started, we’ll always have plenty to keep us busy! We spent a lot of time chasing Cupid to ensure that this issue would be jam-packed with tons of ideas for Valentine’s Day dates, gifts and meals to share with your loved one. What we learned: Cupid likes to eat! Check out our expanded food section for ideas on where to eat, romantic meals to cook at home and the sweetest sweets available in the city to share with your amour. If food isn’t your thing, browse our jewelry gift guide to find the perfect pieces to give your sweetie. When we weren’t dodging Cupid’s arrows, we were practising our football chants! Doha experienced an influx of energy and visitors last month during the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 tournament. We spoke with the team of musicians behind the Asian Cup-inspired song Yalla Asia while they were in town to promote the hit tune. Check out our entertainment section for up-close-and-personal interviews with new music sensations Karl Wolf and Jay Sean. Flip to our QH SENSATIONS LOOK pages for a recount of our trip to Marc Jacobs and Celine with rising star Erika David. The trend of hosting international sporting events in Doha continues, with the Ladies Open tennis championship, the Qatar International Regatta and the Commercialbank Golf Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy, taking place this month. We got you the inside scoop on these events to ensure you’ll have all the information you need to enjoy watching world-class sporting events. This month we take a look at the man behind the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, director Kurt Meister. With QPO settling nicely into their new home at the Opera House at Katara Cultural Village, the orchestra continues to bring beautiful music and culture into our lives. Thanks for reading.

QH TEAM

This month, we honour love and friendship. While these things should be celebrated every day, we can’t resist making a big deal out of Valentine’s Day, mostly because we are suckers for a good Hallmark card.

Sydnee, The Editor

Here at QH, we love to celebrate love in as many ways as possible. That’s why we’ve filled this issue with tips for romantic gifts, dates and meals. Before you get overly disgusted with our newfound (and likely temporary) devotion to love and romance, check out these reasons why we love Valentine’s Day and all that goes with it. • Chocolate. So much freaking chocolate. Heartshaped chocolates? Even better. • Great excuse to wear pink! • Do you really want to be that bitter person who loathes Valentine’s Day because they’re alone? Really?

uru Moona, G

• Candy grams.

Jay, interwebs guy

• Those little paper valentines with Hello Kitty or Spiderman on them. Who doesn’t love getting one of those? Extra points if it comes from someone under the age of five. • Watching all the cheesy, guilty-pleasure romantic comedies on TV in honour of Valentine’s Day. • Did we mention all the chocolate? • Red roses everywhere. Cliché? Maybe. But they’re also pretty and smell nice.

Sporty Jorge

• It’s the only holiday between New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day. Imagine how boring February would be without it!

GD

Paolo

• It’s a reminder to tell your loved one how much you love them. So go do it. Right now. Maybe even tell them twice. Happy Valentine’s Day,

We All Scream

Honeyed Hair

We have recently discovered we have a ridiculously high tolerance for sweets. We are sugar junkies, no doubt about it. The only question is what’s the best way to get our fix? While we constantly change our minds about our favourite dessert, our latest sweet find is the ice cream bar at The Grill in Grand Hyatt Doha. The ice cream, which comes in a variety of yummy flavours, is ridiculously good. Like, we-wish-we-hadmusical-talent-so-we-couldwrite-a-song-about-it good. The best part of this ice cream haven is it also offers a variety of toppings to up the sugar dose on top of your sweet treat. Our favourite combo is chocolate ice cream with berries on top.

Everyone has to deal with hair issues in Doha, no matter how glorious their locks may normally be in other climates. The Honey Moisturizing Conditioner from The Body Shop keeps our hair soft and shiny during the harsh dry season in Qatar. This hydrating conditioner is made with banana, sesame oil, Brazil nut oil and organic Community Trade Honey, ensuring extreme conditioning power for dry, damaged hair. This conditioner makes our hair gleam like a prize pony’s mane and helps repair damage, such as split ends, frizz and breakage. Bonus: This conditioner smells as sweet as it sounds, making us want to deep condition our locks on a daily basis.

Light Delight! Hop on over to the W Café at W Doha and savour the delectable Green Tea Cake. This little mound of happiness can satisfy your craving without actually overwhelming you with sugary sweetness. What draws us to this dessert is its simple appeal; what made us experience joy is its unique flavour - nothing too complex or fancy. Every mouthful of this soft and light dessert actually leaves us wanting more and the strawberry jam inside is a welcome surprise. Unlike other desserts, it won’t give you a heavy feeling in your tummy or a sense of fullness but it will make you experience pure and exact mascarpone mousse contentment. 12 QH FEB 2011F.indd 12

Kaleidoscope Heart

Sara Bareilles has been releasing one amazing album after another since 2004 but has never really hit the big time. That all changes now. Kaleidoscope Heart showcases Bareilles’ sweet, soulful voice and powerful lyrics. The songs are memorable, relatable and all-around lovely. You’ll experience love at first song with this album, with the heart-stopping introduction song Kaleidoscope Heart. Other standout songs include: Uncharted, King of Anything, and Breathe Again. Destined to make Bareilles a household name, this album has songs to suit pretty much any mood you may find yourself in.

Curry Hurry Is there anything better than eating your absolutely favourite meal? Of course there is – being able to eat your ultimate meal just about any place you please. Whether we’re on the go or in the mood for a lovely sit down meal, we always turn to Dean and Deluca’s Thai Green Curry Chicken. This sinfully rich, satisfyingly tangy curry never fails to make our taste buds scream with glee. This magnificent main course’s creamy sauce goes perfectly with Basmati rice. Always cooked perfectly, we crave this coconut-based curry All. The. Time. Basically, we’d eat this yummy dish anywhere Dr. Seuss would approve of, provided we had a big enough take out container.

Passionate Post-Its Lotion Potion For intense hydration in cool winter months, try Estee Lauder’s DayWear Plus Multi Protection Anti-Oxidant Base. We start to panic whenever we run out of this light green lotion because: a) it adds a muchneeded shot of moisture to our skin without being greasy or heavy and b) it makes our dust-trampled skin much, much smoother. This silky lotion protects against UVA and UVB rays and contains SPF 30 to keep our skin looking younger and more radiant. Apply this sweet-smelling cream in the morning post-moisturizer to keep skin soft and supple.

In honour of the month of love and friendship, we would like to say a warm hello to our favourite, can’t-live-without life accessory: the Post-It. While our feelings for these brightly coloured sticky notes may be a touch extreme (if we could only take one thing to a deserted island...), who doesn’t love these handy-dandy, portable papers? They come in a rainbow of colours, a multitude of sizes (a different size for every kind of note!) and an array of different shapes (Hearts! Flowers! Squares!). Best of all, Post-Its are always there to meet our needs. Is it weird to love a piece of paper with adhesive on it? Maybe, but until we find something better we’re sticking with what we know.

QH LifeStyle Awards

Best Chocolate

We are ecstatic to announce the winner of the QH Lifestyle Award for Best Chocolate is Fauchon. This Parisian house of delectable desserts offers up the highest quality chocolates, in addition to their fabulous macaroons and other yummy delights. Fauchon’s array of boxed sets of chocolates make the perfect gift, ideal for special occasions, such as Valentine’s Day. Life is truly amazing when life is like a box of Fauchon chocolates.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

By Sydnee Bryant

Soulful superstar Jay Sean visited Qatar in January to perform the AFC Asian Cup-inspired hit Yalla Asia with Karl Wolf and Erika David. QH chatted with the singer, known for hits such as Do You Remember and Down, moments before he lit up the stage in Doha, delighting music and football fans. QH: You studied medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. How did you make the switch to music?

QH: How would you describe your sound?

JS: I’m a pop-R&B artist. Definitely grew up listening to a lot of soulful music, and I think that’s what gives me a soulful backbone to my music, so it’s not out-andJS: I was studying medicine up until the point where out bubblegum pop. “2011 is when I’m really going to strike.”

QH: You were the first Asian artist to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. What’s the significance of that?

Photos provided by Zoul Projects

JS: The significance of that is a sense of personal accomplishment, as well as something for my people. I think it always takes a breakthrough like that to make people aware of your particular race or your demographic. Being the first Asian to do that, it’s breaking down barriers. It really is. Think about the first black man who broke that (barrier) and managed to become a commercial artist. He allowed many more (artists) to come through. Hopefully I can do the same.

What are some other artists you would be interested in collaborating with? JS: I’d love to work with Rhianna. I’d love to work with Eminem, Jay-Z and Beyonce. I think (those artists) are my four favourites. QH: Are those some of the artists that have influenced your work?

JS: Definitely. Eminem because of what he accomplished despite all the odds. He went on to show that it really is about the music, and yes, he’s going to get the white JS: I got told about it by my PR agency. QH: You work with the Keep A Child Alive Foundation. How did that partnership get started?

QH: Your career is red hot right now but it’s still getting started. How have things changed for you since you first got your record deal? JS: Well, first of all, I now live in America, which is a massive change. Growing up in England and then moving for your work is a big thing. I think, on the whole, I mean, what can I say? Life has become manic. My music is now worldwide, which is an amazing thing, and is released in pretty much every territory around the world and that’s an amazing thing for me, personally. I could only have ever dreamt that (before). When I first started doing music, it was just my mom and dad playing it in their car and now it’s going around the whole world. That’s pretty cool. QH: What are your plans for 2011? JS: 2011, for me, is going to be the takeover year. It’s going to be the year where I believe everything up until now has been teeing it up. 2011 is when I’m really going to strike. 17

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

By Sydnee Bryant

The AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 brought with it not only football but also lots of great entertainment. Hot music sensation Karl Wolf, along with Jay Sean and Erika David, tore up the stage the night before the opening match with the Asian Cup-inspired track Yalla Asia, produced by Zoul Projects. QH hung out with the sweet-talking, well-mannered Wolf in his hotel suite before he serenaded fans with his catchy tunes onstage. QH: How did you get started in the music industry? KW: My mom was a piano teacher, so growing up there was music and instruments all over the house. Music was a part of my life growing up. We would jam together as a family. It was when I got to Canada in 1995 that I started auditioning for different groups, R&B and hip-hop groups, and it just sort of snowballed from there. QH: You were born in Lebanon, raised in Dubai and now you live in Canada. How has your multicultural background influenced your music? KW: In the beginning, I remember trying to stay away from that. When I first got to Canada, it was like, ‘OK, I have to fit in here, so I have to make music that everybody likes’ and that was my first goal, I guess, as a producer at the time. But the deeper I got

into the music industry, (the more I realized) I have to be myself. There’s nothing wrong with showing your true colours and where you come from. I think there’s beauty in that. So I began researching some of the songs and artists my mom and dad used to listen to – Arabic songs, traditional songs. It’s when I started researching that, that all this buzz started about me, even in Canada. It was like, ‘oh this has some flavour,’ as opposed to just some dude trying to make music that sounds like everyone else. QH: You sing, write, play several instruments and produce. Is it important to you to be fully involved in the whole process of making an album? KW: For sure. It’s about individuality; it’s about who I am and what kind of message I want to express out there. Sometimes working with other producers – I’ve done that before, working with other producers and other artists on my stuff. It doesn’t

always turn out as accurate as I want it to. I think that working on my own and honing my skills as a producer and song writer paid off because I can accurately portray what I’m trying to say to the public. QH: You’ve achieved international success with some of your hits, like Africa and Yalla Habibi. What has the path to stardom been like for you? Did you always know you would be successful? KW: I don’t think you go into a project or anything that you’re passionate about thinking you’re going to fail. Of course, it’s always surprising when it actually does work, and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, we actually made it happen.’ But of course I’m going in with the goal in mind that we’re going to make this (successful). That’s the way life is; if you want to succeed you have to be positive and confident in what you have.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

“There’s nothing wrong with showing your true colours and where you come from. I think there’s beauty in that.” QH: Your newest album in called Nightlife. What is that album like and how is it different from your previous work? KW: On Nightlife, I started experimenting with other producers and writers. I think one of the reasons is because I felt like for the first two albums, I produced most of the stuff, I wrote almost everything, recorded almost everything and I mixed most of it too. I was like, ‘You know, I kind of proved it to myself. I can sit back like other artists out there and accept other songs from other producers and just do them.’ I think it worked out okay. There’s nothing wrong with that. But I think for this next record that I’m doing in the future, that I’m currently working on, that I’ll go back to writing and producing my own songs.

Photos provided by Zoul Projects

QH: You recently finished a tour for Nightlife. What was that experience like? KW: Amazing. We’ve been to some parts of the US; I signed a deal with Universal Republic. We’ve been to Tulsa and some other places where Africa was number one on the radio stations. We, of course, toured Canada from east coast to west coast. The cool thing about touring and travelling the world is that you realize that everyone is kind of the same. People react to your music in a similar way, even though one person is from Japan and another is from Canada. Music is so universal, for real.

QH: What album are you currently working on? KW: It’s a new record that’s probably coming out in April or May. I don’t have the title yet. It’s still in the works. QH: You were named one of the World’s Most Influential Arabs by ArabianBusiness.com’s Power 100. What was your reaction to that? KW: I was on the 2008 list as number 93. In 2009, I was number 59, so I’m obviously climbing, which is really cool. The first time I heard about it (in 2008), I was like, ‘Wow, they’re watching.’ You don’t think that people in the business world are looking at an artist like me but I’m an artist, producer, owner of the label, president and CEO so obviously that factors into their decision. QH: Do you see yourself as a role model for Arabs, and youth in general? KW: I think so. It’s not my position to say so but I think from the emails we get and the fans’ reactions, it’s important to be aware that I do have a role to play in their future, potentially. When I was growing up there was no one for me to look up to that was an Arab, per se, working in the music industry and making it in North America. They have someone to look to right now for a path, if they want to do the same thing.

QH: What’s the story behind Yalla Asia? KW: When I first heard of it, the first thing that struck me was that they were choosing me because of Yalla Habibi. When I heard that Jay Sean was involved, it made it more credible for me. I know Qatar is holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup and I think that’s a huge thing. I want to be a part of this movement. I am kind of a good poster boy for this scenario, being Arabic and being the first guy to have a number one single with an Arabic title in Canada. It was good to be a part of it. QH: Besides the new album you’re working on right now, what else do you have planned for 2011? KW: I think I’m focusing on [the new album]. I just signed a worldwide deal. We’re trying to get the U.S. and the U.K. on board as well. We’ve conquered Canada, Japan, the Middle East, of course, so now it’s time for the US. I’m always directing music videos, but I think my main goal is touring the world and getting my music out there to everybody. 19

VIRGIN RECOMMENDS

Here’s how you can find out what’s hot in the literary world. QH brings you the top selections of PlayStation 3 video games from Virgin Megastore this month. And watch for the QH hearts in store!

Creating a world-class orchestra from scratch sounds like a crazy pipe dream. But that’s exactly what Kurt Meister, director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), got to do. Three years ago, Meister scouted talented musicians from around the world to create what would become a staple in Qatar’s arts and culture scene. QH looks at the man behind QPO’s vision and how this unique musical triumph has evolved since its inception.

F

our years ago, if you wanted to experience a night at the opera in Doha, you’d have to settle for a second-hand experience, like listening to a Handel CD.

Fortunately, the Qatar Foundation recognized that in order for Doha to truly have an outstanding arts and culture scene, it would need its own orchestra. In June 2007, the Qatar Foundation asked Meister to create an orchestra, to be ready in September of 2008. Meister literally created an orchestra from scratch, recruiting talented musicians from all over the world and bringing them to Doha. Meister held auditions in Doha but also travelled to 10 different cities to find the best

101 musicians for the orchestra. The newly formed orchestra performed their first concert Oct. 30, 2008. Meister proved to be the perfect choice not only to build the orchestra but also to run it. His distinct career began over 40 years ago when he studied music in his hometown of Munich. It includes travelling through Italy and Germany with various orchestras as a bassoon player and managing two orchestras and a choir for the State Opera House in Munich. But the distinguished director didn’t always love music. There was a time when Meister would rather play football than play an instrument. One day, Meister

decided he wanted to swap the accordion, his first instrument, for a saxophone. But a stroke of fate interfered with his new grand plan to become a saxophone player. When there were none available at his school, Meister was forced to consider other options. The bassoon, a large woodwind instrument, caught his eye. The young lad had never seen a bassoon before, but he was instantly hooked. The fact that bassoon players were a rare commodity was always a part of the appeal, admitted Meister. “There weren’t many bassoon players, so you were asked to come everywhere,” Meister said. “You felt like a king.”

different kinds of music,” Meister said. QPO has an opera program and a symphony program, in addition to other programs. QPO will give residents of Doha a special treat in February with a two-day showing of the world-famous musical Carmen. A choir of 85 people and 10 soloists is required for Carmen, which QPO will perform Feb. 26 and 27, 2011. Carmen is one of, if not the most, performed operas in the world, said Meister.

Three years after its fairy-tale beginning, the orchestra is much more settled, said Meister. QPO recently moved to their very own home in Katara Cultural Village Opera When he moved to a managerial position in Munich, House. The orchestra, which was designed to represent the best of the best, is certainly living up to that goal. The 101 musicians that make up QPO hail from 30 different countries but all call Doha home now. Meister boasts that only four musicians have left QPO since the orchestra began and all did so to join prestigious European orchestras. One of QPO’s biggest challenges is finding a bridge between Western and Arabian music and culture, said Meister. For example, for the orchestra’s performance on Qatar’s National Day in 2010, the musicians used a mix of “old," Arabic instruments and modern-day instruments. The orchestra constantly tries to appeal to both the Qatari and ex-pat communities in Doha in an attempt to interest everyone in their music. QPO also regularly reaches out to a younger audience by producing children’s CDs and hosting workshops for kids. In the near future, QPO will develop a website complete with a concert schedule and reviews, said Meister, making it easier to access information about the organization.

From the black-winged stilt to the European bee-eater, Qatar has its fair share of unique and beautiful birds. Local author Fran Gillespie recently released her latest book Common Birds of Qatar, sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar, a detailed guide for bird watchers in Qatar. The author partnered with the famous bird photographers Hanne and Jens Eriksen to create the first bird book focused on Qatar.

QH: What inspired you to write your new book Common Birds of Qatar? FG: I had long felt that, given the fact that Qatar consists largely of waterless desert land, the number of birds that make a stopover here or stay all year round is quite astonishing. There was a good flora book for Qatar, but nothing on birds. For years I'd had to rely on guides to the birds of Europe, India and the UAE, which covered many of the species of birds here and, of course, the classic Field Guide to the Birds of the Middle East.

QH: What was the research process for this book like? How long did it take to write it?

have to enlist the help of one of the expert birders here in Qatar to obtain this information. So I asked Dr. Brian Hunter, at that time manager of BP in Qatar and a keen birder, for help. He and his wife Louise undertook to provide the maps and bar charts and were pillars of support throughout; Brian also rigorously edited my texts. The book could never have been published without their help. I set to work using the official list of birds for Qatar, provided by the bird recorders here whose records are accepted by Birdlife International. There was much discussion as to what constitutes 'common.' We did not aim to include every bird, as some are very rare or have only been seen once. There are 280 species recorded in Qatar and we at first designated 220 as 'common' and finally this was narrowed down to 215.

FG: The Eriksens' books include a distribution map for Jens and Hanne Eriksen returned to Qatar for two each species and a bar chart showing which months weeks in November 2009 and stayed with us, spending the species can be seen in Qatar and how common it every day out photographing birds at sites all over Qatar. is. Many species are migratory and are only here for a So most of the photographs in the book were taken in few weeks or months. I knew from the start that I would Qatar – one, of a pair of laughing doves on their nest on 28 QH FEB 2011F.indd 28

a window-ledge, was actually taken from their bedroom window in our villa! For the rest they used photographs selected from the many thousands they have in stock. With the Eriksens' consent I dedicated the book to my eldest grandson, Jack, who is a keen little birder and lives on a remote cattle station in the outback of far north Queensland. He is just 10 and since the week he turned seven has undergone often very painful treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia; he has another six months to go. He spent a whole year in the hospital and has been so brave and I wanted to do something special for him. His mom had to explain to him what a 'dedication' in a book meant!

QH: Any advice for aspiring bird watchers in Qatar? FG: Anyone can start by watching birds in their own garden or the nearest park and noting what they see. A good pair of binoculars is essential, but apart from that bird-watching can be the most inexpensive of hobbies. You need a notebook for jotting down brief descriptions of birds, to be identified later, and a field guide. With our long coastline and extensive beaches there are hundreds of waders, gulls and terns to be observed, and inland farms and rodats are a great place to go birdwatching, especially in the winter.

QH: What are you working on for 2011?

Photos by Jay Panganiban

QH: Did you learn anything that surprised you while researching this book? FG: I think I became aware yet again of the immense difference the presence of wetlands, created by expanses of sewage effluent treatment water (waste water) has made, not only to migrating birds but to the birds that live here all year round. Qatar has no natural fresh water at all – I believe it’s the only country in the world with this distinction – but because of the waste water lagoons you get an astonishing variety of waterloving birds here and also birds that come to hunt them: several species of eagle for example. Seventy years ago there cannot have been anything like the present number of species, and more are being recorded each year. Qatar's wetlands are now internationally recognized as a very important contribution to wildlife, and that's why it is vital that they are maintained and not allowed to dry up once their purpose is served.

FG: BQFP has commissioned me to write six short books for primary-age children on the fauna and flora of Qatar, which will be published as a boxed set in both English and Arabic. Those are just completed and I hope they will be published this year. Now I'm working on two more children's books for BQFP, both linked to museums in Qatar, but I can't say more at this stage until things are finalized.

QH: Where can residents of Doha pick up a copy of Common Birds of Qatar? FG: Anyone who would like a signed copy can contact me direct on gillespi@qatar.net.qa.The book is on sale in branches of Virgin Megastore and Jarir Bookstore, in the book and gift shop in the Museum of Islamic Art and at Duty Free at Doha Airport.

QH has ordained 2011 the Year of the Round Up. This means we’ll be scouting out restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and hotels all over Doha to find the best of the best in the food and beverage industry. This month, in honour of Valentine’s Day, we choose the Best Sweets in the City.

The Belgian Cafe and Mykonos at InterContinental Doha

Mykonos’ ultimate sweet surprise is the crème brulee perfumed with Greek coffee. This creamy dessert soothes your tongue with its rich coffee flavour and sweet caramelized top. Vanilla ice cream and tart berries provide the ideal contrast to the creamy nectar of the crème brulee. The Belgian Cafe offers classic Belgian waffles. More than just a breakfast food, these light, crisp golden treats are the perfect sweet ending to any meal. With a choice of powdered sugar, chocolate and strawberry or caramelized apple topping, these made-to-order waffles are as far as you can get from toaster waffles. Standout dessert: To be adventurous, sample the ginger mango jellified with jevra mousse, complete with a strawberry air cloud and vanilla crumble. This unique gastronomic creation, available at any of InterContinental Doha’s food and beverage outlets by special request, is not your usual sweet dessert. The slight bitterness from the chocolate blends surprisingly well with the zing of ginger. The sourness of the strawberry air cloud and mango crisp, plus the crunch from the vanilla crumble, adds more layers of flavour to this playful dish. Each portion is distinct and will stimulate every part of your palate. Faysal Al Aridi, executive pastry chef at the hotel, also created the amazing Harmony Raspberry and Chocolate Macaroon, plus sugar swans, for our front cover this month.

The Cellar and The Jazz Club at Oryx Rotana Doha

The Cellar’s pride and joy is their Mango Cheesecake, and for good reason – this sweet slice of heaven offers three level of mango, including mango slices, puree and the cheesecake itself. We like its rich filling and firm crust. The Jazz Club offers a trio of desserts, which includes a traditional tiramisu, chocolate tiramisu and vanilla ice cream in black sesame tuille. The texture of the vanilla ice cream combined with the black sesame tuille presents an intriguing combination. The chocolate tiramisu contains a biscuit soaked in coffee syrup, providing a sensational flavour. The traditional tiramisu is the best choice for sweets fanatics. Standout dessert: the Pleasure of Heart dessert, a trio created just for Valentine’s Day. The Blood Orange and Pomegranate Spicy Fruit Soup is tart and juicy, an interesting take on fruit. The Mixed Berry Ice Cream Heart consists of sweet mixed berry ice cream encased in a yummy white chocolate shell. The piece de resistance is the Milk Chocolate with Caramel Flakes Heart, White Chocolate Net and Raspberry Cheese Dumpling dessert. The heart provides a crunchy texture, while the raspberry cheese dumpling is surprisingly delicious. 32 QH FEB 2011F.indd 32

The Chocolate Bar at The Pearl – Qatar

The name says it all – The Chocolate Bar is home to some of the most sensational chocolate desserts in Doha. We love the Fondue for Two for its nice selection of items to dip (including fruit, marshmallows and brownies) and fun aspect. The fondue is available in milk and dark chocolate. The slightly bitter dark chocolate is good for those who find milk chocolate too saccharine. For a light treat, you can’t go wrong with a cookie. The Peanut Butter Chip cookie is definitely the best of the three. With a nice level of crunchiness and an explosion of peanut buttery goodness, this cookie proves chocolate and peanut butter really do belong together. For a variety, the Chocolate Chip and Spiced Oatmeal cookies are good options. The Lava Cake is great because it’s not too sweet but still has an amazing chocolate flavour. We like its gooey but not overly runny centre. Standout dessert: the Red Velvet Cake. This rich slice of a classic favourite is massive, meaning it can be shared. However, you’ll want to keep this sweet cake and excellent cream cheese frosting all to yourself.

W Café at W Doha

This Alice-in-Wonderland-themed café offers up more than just charm, with a huge selection of tasty treats. The Lemon Meringue Tart features a white chocolate accent on top. The red current berries bring out the sweet, unique flavour of the soft meringue and fresh lemon curd topping. Both fruit and chocolate lovers will rejoice over the Chocolate Hazelnut Raspberry Tart, which has a hearty texture and pronounced raspberry flavour. The sweet chocolate taste is subtle and goes perfectly with the raspberry jelly. The Chocolate Caramel Cake is a chocolate mousse log with a caramel centre and a praline crunch, finished with a layer of chocolate sponge. We like how the mild chocolate taste mingles with the red currants and hazelnut crunch for an explosion of flavour. The Strawberry Choux is a light, mild dessert, perfect for tea. This soft dessert is classic strawberries and cream at its best. Standout dessert: Raspberry Vanilla Macaroon. There are no words to describe this amazing dessert but we’ll try: it’s sweet, light and has lots of icing. This treat takes macaroons to a new level, where pastry cream filling, gold leaf details and edible rose petals are the norm.

at Four Seasons Doha This elegant restaurant offers a variety of desserts. We are particularly fond of their Passionfruit Macaroon, which is light, spongy and mildly sweet without being too sugary. The tanginess of the passionfruit really stands out, creating a burst of flavour. What makes this dessert special is the creamy, tangy filling and rectangular shape. We swooned over the Berry Cheesecake for its nice mix of berries, reminiscent of bumbleberry pie. This deconstructed cheesecake comes in a shot glass, with triangles of graham cracker crust sticking out of the sweet cheesecake filling. For a simple, yet delicious pleasure, try the homemade marshmallows, which are a heavenly concoction of sweetness. These fresh, yummy nibbles of sugar are the perfect hit of sugar. The vanilla flavour is the perfect accompaniment to hot chocolate; the mint marshmallow would be a nice addition to mint chocolate chip ice cream; and the raspberry flavour is amazing on its own. Standout dessert: the Milk Chocolate and Passionfruit Mousse with Bruniose of Fruit. This special Valentine’s Day-themed dessert is meant to be shared. We loved the delicious contrast of the nutty chocolate heart with the sweet, soft mousse and citrusy passionfruit decorations. 33 QH FEB 2011F.indd 33

Spending Valentine’s Day with a special someone this year? Whether you want to cook a romantic meal or enjoy a lovely meal for two in a sweet setting, Carluccio’s provides a great opportunity to share some extraordinary Italian food with your loved ones.

F

ood and love are inexplicably, intricately linked. It’s no surprise that many choose to celebrate love and friendship with wonderful food on Valentine’s Day. Those lucky ducks who know their way around the kitchen usually use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show off their culinary skills for their special sweethearts.

Those who like to cook but need a little push in the right direction should think about buying a food kit, full of all the ingredients needed to make a spectacular dish, such as the risotto with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil set available at Carluccio’s, one of the newest restaurants to land at The Pearl-Qatar. This adorable food tin comes with everything you need to make risotto con funghi, said Chef Giulio Brignola, who is based in Dubai but oversees all of the Carluccio’s branches. The set comes with two types of rice - vialone nano and carnaroli, dried porcini mushrooms, olive oil for cooking and white truffle oil to add at the end of cooking for additional flavour. While you’re browsing the Carluccio’s store,

located inside the restaurant, pick up a loaf of fresh baked ciabatta, black olive, walnut or multi-cereal bread to start off your meal. For a real treat, scoop up some burro al tartufo (truffle butter) to accompany your fresh-baked bread. Another popular option on Valentine’s Day is to eat out at a lovely restaurant. People who don’t cook or simply wish to relax instead of slaving over a hot stove can head to a nice restaurant with a spectacular view and enjoy an evening of good food without washing a single pot. Many dining establishments offer special Valentine’s-themed menus or special desserts to celebrate Cupid. Carluccio’s will offer a set Valentine’s Day menu, along with an a la carte offering and their normal dessert menu. For a completely fabulous meal, appetizers are a must. If you head to Carluccio’s, start with focaccia al formaggio (garlic bread with provolone cheese melted on top). These thick toast triangles manage to be both

When people think of renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, they often think of crying, screaming and tantrums – in other words, a scene straight of Ramsay’s show Hell’s Kitchen. But Ramsay can throw tantrums for a reason – the man is a culinary genius.

This restaurant is all about surprising flavour he fact that Ramsay has a way with food combinations and maze’s appetizers are the best is never more obvious than when you dine examples of this goal. We were pleasantly astonished at maze Doha by Gordon Ramsay at The by the pea risotto, spring onions, roasted mushrooms Pearl-Qatar. The Alaskan king crab and Granny Smith apple salad, caviar d’Aquitaine and virgin Bloody Mary sorbet was refreshing to the palate and the sourness of the lemon provided a nice tartness. In order to understand maze, you need to know something: they are perfectionists and it shows in their service, food quality and presentation. We tried three main courses – the roasted hammour with whole grain rice pilaf, raisons and braised fennel; the Australian 9th grade stockyard Wagyu beef fillet with roasted artichokes, green peppercorn sauce and onion marmalade; and the prime-rib burger, to see what maze is truly capable of dishing out.

Photos by Jay Panganiban

The hammour was crisp on the outside and firm, yet tender, on the inside. The chef cooks the hammour to “medium,” ensuring that by time it reaches the table it is perfectly cooked instead of over-cooked. The dish provided a burst of flavours, as the saltiness of the fish and the sweetness of the rice battle it out for your affection. The prime-rib burger was an experience in itself. It was literally the softest burger we’ve ever had. The light, subtle flavour of the juicy meat paired well with the crisp bun and onion rings. This is about as far from fast food as a burger can get but don’t confuse it for a snooty burger; this burger is huge, slightly messy and meant to be devoured by hand with vigour.

The Wagyu beef fillet was moist, tender and utterly delectable. While the green peppercorn sauce was mild, the onion marmalade provided a surprising shot of flavour when paired with each bite of beef. The entire dish was a lesson in how combining just the right flavours and textures can lead to new taste sensations. We sampled a variety of yummy side dishes, including roasted confit potatoes with rosemary and sea salt, buttered potato mash, fine green beans with sherry shallot vinaigrette, roasted chestnut mushrooms with garlic and parsley, and chips with an aioli dip. The side dishes represent an array of flavours and textures, from sweet and sour to salty and firm to melt-in-yourmouth. The fries were crisp and salty but light. The garlic-flavoured aioli provided a surprising flavour we couldn’t quite put our finger on but in the best way possible. The buttered potato mash were the creamiest, most luscious mashed potatoes we have ever had the pleasure of eating. The herbs on the roasted chestnut mushrooms made this simple side dish into something very complex and enjoyable. I don’t know how we made room for dessert but the menu was simply too tempting to resist. The apple and blackberry crumble slice with vanilla custard and cinnamon

ice cream is not your typical apple crumble. With a dominant apple flavour amidst a sweet, crumbly crust and a powerful cinnamon kick, this dessert delivers awesome fruity flavour and a blackberry jelly so delicious we were tempted to ask for a jar of it to take home for our morning toast. As chocolate worshippers, we went nuts for the warm chocolate fondant with toasted sesame ice cream and salt caramel sauce. The filling smothered our tastebuds with a warm hug of chocolate love. The sharpness of the chocolate and sesame seeds work nicely together, for a flavour that is neither saccharine nor bitter. But the ultimate, our-lives-will-neverbe-the-same dessert was the coffee macaroon with mascarpone cream and white chocolate and coffee ice cream. The moment the first bite hit our lips we fell utterly in love with this sweet, coffeeinfused dessert. The sweet mascarpone cream is a great match for the coffee flavour and crispy macaroon. We ended our culinary journey with a cup of tea, full bellies, expanded minds and raised expectations. 37

With the new year comes new chefs and elevated standards at the Four Seasons Doha. QH learns how the chefs at Four Seasons Doha are working together to elevate levels of culinary pleasure in Doha.

T

here are few things in life sweeter than an amazing dessert. Not just a good dessert, but a really freaking fantastic dessert, the kind you not only crave but also dream about. Chef Loic Carbonnet understands this. The executive pastry chef, who recently moved from Europe to Doha to take command of all things sweet at Four Seasons Doha, is a master of desserts.

The hotel hired Carbonnet after he did an extensive baking presentation for them, which included pastries, high tea and buffet items. The Four Seasons was impressed with Carbonnet’s presentation and baking skills, said Giancarlo Di Francesco, executive chef at Four Seasons Doha. “We’re very lucky that we found him,” Di Francesco said. “We needed somebody new, with new ideas and new concepts.” Carbonnet’s role as the executive pastry chef will be to introduce some changes to the hotel’s pastry and dessert selections, a transition that will take place slowly. “It’s a long process; you want to do it properly,” Carbonnet said. He will train the team to create new items and supervise them until they are comfortable doing the work on their own. Many of the changes will focus on Brassiere on the Beach, said

Carbonnet. The chef, who hails from France, plans on changing the cookies, which have remained the same for years. Instead of having a wide selection of cookies, Carbonnet will focus on perfecting a few different kinds. The Four Seasons Doha has recently stepped up their sweets game by offering sweets specials in their Tea Lounge, such as macaroons one month and marshmallows the next. In the United States, marshmallows are usually considered junk food, said Carbonnet. The Four Seasons Doha’s marshmallows are anything but the junky, overly sugary gobs of gelatin that are usually sold in stores. Instead, Carbonnet’s handmade marshmallows, which come in raspberry, mint and vanilla, resemble fluffy bits of heavenly sweetness. Although Carbonnet has only been in town a short while, he has already established a close bond with Di Francesco. The two chefs seem more like brothers than co-workers, and constantly joke with each other about who has the best culinary chops. Di Francesco also knows what it is like to adjust to a new kitchen family. Di Francesco arrived in Qatar about five months ago. It can be a challenge to come into a

kitchen as a new chef, said Di Francesco, especially when the kitchen staff is used to working with the same executive chef and pastry chef. “We have a very big job ahead of us to figure out what will work in Doha,” Di Francesco said. The hotel’s guests will be the clearest indicators of what works and what doesn’t, said Di Francesco.

Di Francesco’s role as the executive chef is to organize and motivate the kitchen staff. The Four Seasons Doha has 86 kitchen staff from 45 different countries. Di Francesco is also responsible for planning the menu and ensuring the quality of the food is always top notch. The Doha market is not an easy one to conquer, said Di Francesco. Many residents of Doha have travelled the world and are familiar with many different styles of food. The hotel has a lot of repeat customers and therefore must work hard to keep things fresh and exciting for guests. “The more you change, the more you attract people,” Di Francesco said. “My job is always to be on alert and to see what other people are doing. Today, cooking is like fashion; every three months you have to come up with a new collection.”

Passionfruit Curd Soak the gelatin.

Hazelnut Tuile: Mix the pectin with the sugar.

Leave in cold water while bringing all the ingredients to the boil, excluding the butter.

Heat the rest of the ingredients to a boil, excluding the cocoa nibs.

Keep stirring the mix until it reaches boiling point and cook for two minutes.

Boil all of that for one to two minutes and reserve on the side. When colder, add the cocoa nibs.

Pour the mix in a container to cool down to 50 degrees and add the butter using a hand blender. Freeze this curd in a frame and cut the desired shape when frozen.

When cold, make little balls and bake at 180 degrees for about eight to nine minutes.

Keep on the side

Brunoise of Exotic Fruits: Choose some exotic fruits and cut into small squares.

Milk Chocolate Mousse Anglaise cream base: Boil the milk and whipping cream in a pan.

Zest one lime and add some passionfruit juice with apricot blitzed together to cut down the acidity.

Mix the sugar and egg yolks. Once the milk-cream mixture has boiled, pour onto the yolks and sugar and stir. Put back that mix in the pan and cook at 84 degrees. Strain. Add the soaked gelatin and cool down it down in the fridge.

Method for Mango-Passionfruit Sorbet: Make a syrup with the glucose, sugar and water, then add the purees. Leave to marinate overnight and churn the next day in an ice cream machine. Reserve in the freezer.

Melt the milk chocolate, and then add the Anglaise cream base to the chocolate. Whip the cream and add it to the Anglaisechocolate mix. Fill the mould and insert the frozen passionfruit curd. Keep in the freezer and spray with a mix of chocolate and cocoa butter (equal amounts). Reserve for the plate. 39

HEALTH & WELLNESS

By Jorge Granda

While TV ads and media make it seem effortless to have a six-pack and look great, it takes hard work and discipline to achieve that goal. QH tells guys where they can go and what they can do to look their best.

I

n past decades, a man, in order to be considered manly, had to be some kind of dumb gorilla who would only work on his cars, practise rough sports and give no importance to his external appearance. Unfortunately, some people still think that way. But the truth is that apart from doing the typical “manly stuff,” a man can also be cool, smart, cultured, attractive and have an impeccable sense of style without being less of a man. Men are entitled to make themselves look good and enjoy the finer things in life. The InterContinental Doha understands that concept and the fact that, apart from relying on their intellectual and professional success, men are also focusing on looking and feeling great. The spa at the InterContinental Hotel offers an indulgent and intimate spa experience for guys, using

an extensive variety of revitalizing oils for treatments that will make you feel young and fierce. But the InterContinental Doha offers more than just massages. Asela Jayaweera, recreation manager of the hotel, welcomed us during a sunny afternoon to introduce us to the new concept the hotel has been working on for the past few months. This innovative concept aims to improve the lifestyle, aesthetics and health of men living in Qatar. This new trend consists of linking the spa with the wellness center, also known as the gym, to provide clients with a professional “Lifestyle Package,” in which therapist and trainers will work together to produce a deeper impact in a man’s exercise regimen, leading to a better physical aspect. The manager also told us that a nutritionist will soon join the team to add to the effect of the programs.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Achieving the desired body is more complicated than one may think. There are many elements that need to be in place to attain the desired results. Changing your lifestyle (eating habits, tracking calories and sleeping well, among other aspects) is required, as well as a personalized training and massage treatment program. The lifestyle packages offered at the InterContinental Doha are tailored to each individual and determined by a team of experts. Each package includes a minimum of 10 work-out sessions and 10 massage treatments for QR 3,000. Looking after yourself is a full-time job and, like any job, paying attention to details is very important for successful results. The process is long, but if you are committed, the end product will be more than satisfactory.

Photos by Jay Panganiban

Having a therapist assist your trainer is a big plus. The therapist has access to all areas of your body, allowing him to identify which muscles need more development, helping the trainer create the perfect workout for you. It is all about team work. In addition, the facilities at the hotel's gym are way above average, with incredible technology. The most important thing to keep in mind is that permitting your body to recover after a work-out session is essential. What better way to let your blood circulation flow properly and allow your muscles to rest than having a nice and relaxing massage after a good cardio or heavy weight lifting session? This is exactly the philosophy behind the new concept offered at the InterContinental Doha’s wellness center and spa. The goal is to create the perfect scenario for men to achieve the physical aspect they’ve always wanted.

After hearing all about this theory, we were eager to head up to the message room and put ourselves in the hands of experts, while take advantage of the most enjoyable part of the package. My colleague Sydnee was my partner in fun. Raquel Gonzales, the public relations manager at InterContinental Doha, took her to the women’s section, while I was welcomed by my massage therapist, Marcial, at the reception. He cordially led the way to the massage room. The men’s area at the spa is small, but cozy. The dressing and shower area is nice and clean. The spa décor is updated and relaxing. Once I entered the room, a soft melody could be heard and candlelight served as the perfect background. The ambience could have not been better. Marcial clearly knew how to treat men. He applied the right amount of pressure to my legs, arms, back, head and neck. He paid particular attention to the knots in my upper back without making it a painful experience. From the very beginning of the massage, I felt every muscle in my body was amazingly relaxed. I especially enjoyed the way he rubbed my feet and cracked all my toes with an accurate and precise motion. In my eight years in Qatar I can say this massage was one of the best I have had in this country. During the entire time I spent at the spa in Marcial’s company, he was very friendly and gave me just the right amount of chit-chatting: not too much talking to take the focus away from the massage, but enough to be polite and nice. It was the perfect balance. My overall experience was just awesome. I highly recommend this spa for those men out there who want to de-stress. You'll fit in fine if you are the type that takes care of yourself, as this is a place that will take care of you. Become the best man you can be! 43

With a new fitness centre slated to open at Villaggio Mall this month, we had to ask ourselves: is working out really that big of a deal? Turns out, yes, yes it is. finish working out. In Qatar, however, people like to have a more luxurious gym experience, said Al-Obaidly. The facility will have a lounge area where members can relax before or after their workouts. In the future, energie will also have a spa area with massage therapy and a nutritionist. In addition to the cardio and weight areas of the gym, there will be studios in between the men and women’s sections of the gym. Members will be able to take classes, such as Pilates and self-defence courses, in these studios.

Photos by Jay Panganiban

The fitness facility will employ at least 25 male and 20 female personal trainers. If you’re just starting your fitness journey, it’s a good idea to work out at a gym under the supervision of a personal trainer, said Al-Obaidly. “They can lead you in a short time to your goals,” Al-Obaidly said. “If you stay home, you do things wrong. You have no supervision. You hurt yourself.” Working out with a personal trainer can make all the difference in reaching your health and fitness goals, said Al-Obaidly. “We have good, qualified trainers that really are excellent. And you feel that. You see it; you sense it. Immediately, you will feel it,” Al-Obaidly said. “After one week of being with us, you’ll know that you are different. Not different because we have different equipment or different things; it’s the spirit there. That spirit - it can be captured, and felt and sensed by the people - that we really care to transform, to change, to help, to be there for you when you need it.” Another important aspect of reaching your fitness goals is to be specific about what you want. You have to plan

your goals in order to reach them, said Al-Obaidly. “You have to have a goal. That goal will make you committed. That commitment, if it’s there, is exactly what you want. That commitment will make you exactly aware of what you need to do,” Al-Obaidly said. Fitness is a chain reaction, said Al-Obaidly. If one person in a family begins to work out, it often inspires other family members to join. When family members can all work out in one place, it makes it that much easier for families to get fit. Exercising together benefits families in many ways because they are reaching goals together, said Al-Obaidly. Families can work out together at energie Fitness Club. There are separate men and women’s sections, plus a kids’ section where children eight-to-16 years of age can play and work out with Shokk fitness equipment. The facility will be the second energie-brand gym in Doha. The energie Fitness Club opened on Airport Road in 2009. energie is an international brand with a “gulf flavour,” Al-Obaidly said, making it perfect for Qatar. Raising fitness levels is essential in Qatar, where obesity and diabetes are extremely common. “In Qatar we are thinking of raising the consciousness of health, and fitness comes with that,” Al-Obaidly said. “Obesity in Qatar is so high; you won’t believe it for this small country.” Fitness and nutrition are both necessary for health and wellness. Healthy living is 60 per cent what you eat and 40 per cent exercise, said Al-Obaidly, meaning people need to work on both aspects in order to have a healthy lifestyle. 45

n 1980, a shop with a very distinctive concept opened its doors in Doha. Handmade products from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Turkey, Indonesia and Egypt saw the light of the day when Shaukat Aga started his family business in Qatar.

The carpet business has been in Aga’s family for generations. Before establishing the business in Qatar, Aga travelled all over the world buying carpets in auctions where aristocrats and even members of royal families were liquidating their assets. He also acquired many carpets when dealing with different retailers, especially in India and his native Pakistan. His many travels and deals allowed him

to gain great experience and taste for the divine. The time came when he had saved enough money to open his own shop and Oriental Carpet was born. Slowly but surely the business built up a reputation of being a must-stop store for those looking for a unique and vast variety of handmade carpets, as well as textiles and embroidered fabrics. Iranian carpets are the most popular and beautiful merchandise to be found in stock. Most buyers consider them an investment, as they are truly pieces of art. The most valuable carpets in the shop are those made out of 100 per cent silk, created in Qum. Due to the complexity of the designs, quality of the materials and number of knots within one square inch, these rugs can cost up to QR 50,000. However, there are many more affordable carpets that are just as exquisite. All designs reflect human nature and you won’t find such a big selection of striking and affordable rugs anywhere else in Doha. Apart from silk, the materials used to produce these exceptional pieces are wool and cotton. Not only is the quality of the products overwhelming, but Nadir Aga (Shaukat’s son), will personally help you find that special item that will make your house a home. He is probably one of the kindest sales representatives you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. His knowledge and passion for the business is so overpowering that a trip to Oriental Carpet can easily turn into a terrific cultural experience.

Happy Diamonds Collection If you’re looking to double her pleasure, buy her this set, which includes a stunning chain necklace, complete with a miniature key, and bracelet. By Sydnee Bryant With Cupid’s favourite day fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about the best gifts to surprise your sweetie! QH headed to Alfardan Jewellery’s newest boutique, located at The Pearl-Qatar, to pick the prettiest pieces from Chopard for Valentine’s Day. While jewelry may seem like a v-day cliché, it’s actually the best gift you can give because, as Noor Alfardan, vice president of Alfardan Jewellery Co. put it, who doesn’t love jewelry? “No girl will ever receive a piece of jewelry and be upset about it,” Alfardan said. “You can never go wrong with a piece of jewelry!” We chose pieces from Chopard’s special Valentine’s Day collection, as well as some items from their other collections. “Chopard has a very strong love theme. You can buy anything from their collection and give it to someone for Valentine’s Day and it would look like it was done just for that time [of year],” Alfardan said. The best part of Chopard’s Valentine’s Day collection is that it can be worn year-round, meaning your favourite pieces won’t collect dust the other 364 days of the year. It’s not something that’s restricted to Valentine’s Day,” Alfardan said. “Chopard’s main theme is hearts and you see a lot of hearts in their jewelry.”

Happy Hearts Collection She’ll never stop playing with this adorable pendant, available in gold and white gold.

Happy Diamonds Collection If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then this necklace truly delivers!

QH SENSATIONS LOOK

By Sydnee Bryant Anyone who spends time on a little thing called the World Wide Web has probably come across one of Erika David’s videos. The rising star began posting videos of herself singing on YouTube after a friend advised her about the social media channel. Her first video was a cover of Beyonce’s Irreplaceable. “I started getting really good feedback, which was so surprising to me,” said the modest songbird. The 22-year-old Filipina started developing her own sound, which she describes as sexy “with a little swag on top.” Born in the U.S. to Filipino parents, David grew up listening to R&B music. Her own music is a mixture of pop and R&B. The Las Vegas resident writes her own songs, usually based on her own real-life experiences. My music is very, very real,” David said. David recently performed in Doha during the Yalla Asia concert a day prior to the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 game’s opening match. The concert, which featured separate sets from David, Jay Sean and Karl Wolf, took place at Aspire Park and included the three solo artists taking to the stage to sing the Asian Cup-inspired track Yalla Asia.

During her recent trip to Qatar, songstress Erika David hit the mall to shop for new clothes and accessories at the Marc Jacobs and Celine boutiques at Villaggio Mall. Shirt, Navy Shirt by Celine; bag, Large Single Gold by Marc Jacobs; bracelet, Manchette Gold bracelet by Celine. Hair and makeup by Louise Abusenna.

QH SENSATIONS LOOK The aspiring chanteuse has plenty of exciting things on the horizon, including releasing a mixed tape and, eventually, an album. David, a serious accessories and fashion junkie, also plans on starting her own jewelry line in the near future. Her sharp fashion sense incorporates high heels, leggings, blingy rings and statement necklaces into her look. David is a huge fan of high-end lines like Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs but can also be found browsing at H&M and Forever 21. QH tagged along during David’s recent shopping trip in Marc Jacobs and Celine at Villaggio Mall.

David picked out shoes, bags and accessories at the Celine boutique in Villaggio Mall. Shirt, Navy Shirt by Celine; jeans, her own; shoes, Celine Pump Wedge 90 by Celine; bag, Medium Shopper Bag in Black by Celine; belt, Small T Belt by Celine; ring, her own; necklace, on the hunt for aColn Pendant Gold by Celine.

Here at QH we are always hot clothing line. This year we are particularly delighted with the W Doha’s Global Glam 2010 collection. The line includes pieces from designers such as Behnaz Sarafpour, Fallon, Porcelain and Melissa Odabash; the collection is curated by fashion expert Amanda Ross. The fashion line contains pieces sure to become staples in every fashionista’s closet in 2011. Not sure how to pull of such sassy fashion statements? No worries; QH is happy to raid the closet in The W Store and play fashion stylist. 52

READ A street-style fashion blog, such as www.facehunter.blogspot.com, an off-spring of the global street-style blog www.thecoolhunter.net. Street-style blogs are all the rage now that everyone and their grandmother has sleek but powerful digital cameras. These blogs focus on the everyman (and women) on the street, the regular folk who put together their ensembles one piece at a time, without the help of a stylist or personal assistant. Street blogs are a good way of finding inspiration for new outfits and unique ways to wear your same-old clothes. Even high-end designers cite street-style blogs as a source of inspiration for their haute couture fashion lines. The individual on the street is the way of the fashion future.

Dior Oui Ring. Say yes to this fabulous gold ring. You don’t need to know French to know that Dior equals style, class and European cheekiness. The Oui Ring is all those things and more. The ideal accessory for any one of your fingers (depending on your mood and availability), this ring is available in gold and white gold. With its cute design, imperfect shape and perfectly placed diamond, this ring blows over-thetop engagement rings away, while also giving all the single ladies an excuse to put a ring on it. You’ll wear this timeless piece for years, before handing it down to future generations of fashionable females.

CARRY BUY Diesel Shoes. We never thought it was possible for running shoes to be hot but these somehow are. They may be designed for men but we think ladies could pull these sweet kicks off with jeans. We love the simple, yet chic, design and how the understated colours mix with a pop of red for flair. The silver suede details add a nice touch of class to these adorable but practical shoes. Finally, running shoes we can wear all day, not just at the gym. Available at Salam stores as part of their spring 2011 collection.

Louis Vuitton Zippy Wallet. This gorgeous wallet, part of Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Vernis Leather line, has eight credit card slots, an open compartment to hold cash, a zippered section to hold coins and three big compartments to hold all your important papers (ID card? Check. Passport? Check!). While we like how user-friendly it is, it's this wallet’s glossy surface, rich colour and classic monogrammed pattern that first caught our fancy. Throw in your favourite hand bag for everyday use. This chic wallet is available in colours ranging from Rose Florentin (a luminescent light pink) to Amarante (a glossy candy-apple red, shown here).

It’s time for another edition of the Qatar Fencing Grand Prix! QH spoke with Khalid Suwied Salem Johar, venue manager, about the preparations for one of the most important fencing meetings in the world.

I

n ancient times when going to battle against their enemies, Persians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and Germanic tribes used to parry themselves around with shields tied to their left arm, masks strapped to their wigs and long, sharp swords decorating their right arm. Fortunately, those barbaric days are behind us, as mankind has evolved. Swordsmanship is no longer a practice that requires individuals to head off to the battlefield or to amuse emperors and kings during fatal exhibitions of combat. The death by sword of gladiators, as well as lions, elephants, tigers or any other type of savage creatures from the animal kingdom in the arena of the Roman Coliseum is not an act you will see in the 21st century. However, for the enjoyment of those who still look for that kind of thrill, a more refined and less hostile form of swordplay entered the scene at the end of the 19th century, when fencing was born.

The history of fencing in Qatar doesn’t date back centuries. On the contrary, fencing is fairly new and is still developing in the nation. Nonetheless, the sport has captured the attention of the country and is gradually becoming popular among the citizens. The Qatar Fencing Federation took notice of the increasing interest of the discipline among sports fans and saw in the Grand Prix the perfect opportunity to officially introduce the sport to the country with style. The enthusiasm and the budget were right there; all that needed to be done was to put everything into motion. The federation did and thanks to their efforts we will be able to witness the supremacy of a sport that is legendary. But having top fencers showcasing their total control of their weapons in a world-class-event wouldn’t be enough without the perfect contemporary battlefield. Qatar may not have a coliseum, but nothing

By Jorge Granda

The Commercialbank Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy, is the most important golf tournament celebrated in the country. Every year some of the world’s top golfers gather at the Doha Golf Club to participate in this exciting event. World number 10 Ian Poulter will be amongst the players hitting the ball at the championship course. QH talked to Poulter to get an inside scoop on his career, his life and his thoughts on Qatar and the Masters.

I

an Poulter is a renowned and famous golfer. He enjoys the respect of his peers, a beautiful family life and the adoration of his fans. One could say the 41-year-old not only reached for the stars but has actually grabbed them.

But not everything was fame and fortune once upon a time. Poulter started out as an assistant professional with a handicap of four in 1994. With perseverance and determination, the Milton Keynes, U.K. resident managed to overcome all obstacles and position himself as one of the greatest British golfers of all time. In February 2010, Poulter became the first Briton to claim the title at the WGC event, after overcoming countryman Paul Cassey. The triumph at the event allowed him to enter the elite group of the world’s top five for the first time in his career and he clinched the title at the UBS Hong Kong Open. His 2009 season was

also a remarkable one, which ended with a win at the Barclays Singapore Open where he snatched his eighth title. But 2007 is the year which can be considered Poulter’s most successful one, as both his career and personal life were filled with great accomplishments. He married long-time fiancée Katie, made the cut in all majors, won the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan and launched his own clothing line, Ian Poulter Design. After getting a tip that this extraordinary sports personality was coming to the country, we decided to dig a little bit deeper into his life and the path he had to take to become a modern legend of golf. QH: Ian, how did you get into the game of golf and at what age? IP: I started back home in England at the age of five and really loved everything about the game from the

start. I remember going to the Ryder Cup as a teenager and sleeping in a tent, as I didn’t have enough money to stay in a nice hotel but wanted to watch the Ryder Cup. Later, I went through an apprenticeship program to become a teaching pro and was working in a pro shop. I started playing the local tours and then played my way up. QH: In your career as a golf professional, what particular victory and what shot stands out the most? IP: There are many great moments in the life of a golf professional, but if I needed to choose one it would probably be the victory at WGC Matchplay and, without any doubt, my best shot of my career was the pitch shot to the 15th from below the green in the Matchplay.

Photos provided by Doha Golf Club

QH: You have visited Qatar several times to participate in the Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy. What is it about the event that you like? IP: Many things, to be honest. I like the hospitality, the people and the relaxed atmosphere at the event. I have personal relationships with Hassan Al Nuami, the President of the QGA, Chris Myers who is the event manager and, of course, Andrew Stevens, who is the Group CEO of Commercialbank. Without the support of these fine people, tournaments like this would not be possible. That’s why I like to come back to Doha and support the event.

QH: Who are your biggest competitors in the event? IP: Well, everyone can play good golf in the event. But the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy, is known for its high quality field. Every year they have the best players from Europe mixed with some big names from America. It makes the field one of the best on the European Tour and that attracts many good players to come and compete. QH: You’ve played around the world and have seen many golf courses. How do you like the layout of the Championship Course at Doha Golf Club? IP: I like it a lot. It is a great layout that keeps you and your game on your toes. For the event itself they make the rough grow to 90mm, which forces all of us to keep it in the short grass, as we players say. If you hit your drive off the tee into the rough, you will struggle to make a par. The wind makes it interesting as well and the course is quite long. It’s a challenging course for the tour professionals and one of the best courses in the Middle East, without a doubt. QH: And how do you perceive Qatar? IP: I like Qatar a lot. The people are extremely nice and friendly. The Qataris are great hosts and their hospitality is overwhelming. I truly enjoy visiting this country. Qatar with its sports events

throughout the year and with the FIFA World Cup in 2022 is truly global and recognized around the world. QH: What can you tell us about the day-to-day life of a golfer? IP: That’s quite simple – we live a great life. We have managed to turn our passion and hobby into our profession. How many people can say that about their love for a sport? We live a competitive life and discipline is a key factor to success. We watch what we eat and we do spend time in the gym. We work with nutrition specialists, fitness coaches, physiotherapists, swing coaches and some of us work with mental coaches. QH: If you weren’t a golfer, who would you be? IP: That’s pretty simple; I would be a football player at Arsenal London (smiles). QH: What are your goals and what do you hope to achieve in your golfing career? IP: I have a few goals that I wish to achieve, if I am being honest. I would like to win a major; if I could choose it would be the Open Championship, which is the oldest major and the only one we play in Europe. I would like to climb up the World Rankings a bit more and win some of the biggest events around the world. And, of course, win the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.

COLOUR SCOPE

HONEYSUCKLE By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

2011 brings with it a bright new colour for an exciting new world. Honeysuckle promises to inspire and uplift everyone’s spirits this year. Last year’s Pantone colour of the year was turquoise – a colour that both heals and calms, allowing you to ponder and venture into new ideas. This tone is a great colour to represent 2010, as everyone was feeling timid after the recession and needed time to reenergize. This year, however, is another story. 2011 is a year for inspiration and courage to face everyday situations and go forward with spirit and vitality. The Pantone colour of 2011 is none other than a combination of red and pink named honeysuckle. This bold colour is encouraging, uplifting and, according to the Pantone Color Institute’s website, the best colour to ward off economic doldrums! “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating colour that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues. Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother colour red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this colour, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer.” This amazing colour has the power to inspire us all into action. It is courageous and bold, yet soft enough to encourage teamwork and likeability. Like the colour red, honeysuckle stimulates energy and can increase the blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat, and pulse rate. It is a great colour to lift your spirits and promote confidence, so don’t be timid and add splashes of this colour to your life. 96

IN THE HOME

Use it in areas where you want to add some charm and positive energy, like the kitchen, foyer or hallways and the family room. Remember, it is an appetite stimulant so be careful about painting the entire dining area in this colour. Instead, use it for added conversation stimulation with touches here and there in placemats, tablecloths, napkins and center pieces.

FASHION

You can combine this amazing colour and add pizzazz to your wardrobe by pairing it with black, navy or charcoal grey. The best thing ever is that it works well for both men and women. Don’t be shy and give it a try.

The more you like pink,

The less you like pink,

the more you are inspired to give and share.

the more suspicious you are of others.

The Dewey Color System® is the world’s only validated, colour-based, personality testing instrument. It’s the first proven system that scientifically predicts the recognized major psychometric personality factors without language. www.deweycolorsystem.com
