Nothing gets our office hopping like Sophie Ellis Bextor. With disco rhythms and a melodic voice that eats through your ears directly to your dancing shoes, she’s the perfect accompaniment to that morning cup of coffee or the 3 p.m. slump. Plus, she looks like she’s a gorgeous piece of plastic and watching her mouth move is like entering the uncanny valley. Creepy. Faves include ‘Murder on the Dance Floor’ and ‘I Won’t Change You’. When these first wandered into our office, they freaked us out. Little bits of plastic, supposedly able to create that perfect beehive ‘bump’ without having to tease your hair to astounding heights of hair destroying glory? But yep, these actually work! Nerds, Ho! Let your inner geek frolic free with The Big Bang Theory, our latest television obsession. Based around the concept of four smart guys (one who can’t seem to talk to women, and who incidentally introduced my parents to the concept of Skype) and their pretty neighbor, it’s a lot less lame than it sounds. For example, one character explains he was sent to boarding school after his childhood work with lasers. It’s hilarious, it’s bizarre, and you’ll learn all sorts of fun facts to know and tell. Susan Boyle’s latest CD has sent shivers up spines worldwide. QH catches up with the singing Cinderella about her new CD, and her journey to fame. Photo: Austin Hargrave
W
hen Susan Boyle walked onto the stage the judges faces and the visible shivers of the audience. Thus began her journey on Britain’s Got Talent, the reality to audition for Britain’s Got Talent in TV programme that Boyle finished in second place behind January 2009, fellow hopefuls openly dance troupe Diversity. wondered why she was there.
“Everybody kept saying to me ‘are you sure you should be at this audition?’ I saw dance groups come and go, men with spoons, dogs. Eventually it was my turn, I got three yeses,” she said. When she opened her mouth, and the strains of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ erupted, everything changed. Boyle’s powerful voice and her swagger, which shocked even herself, garnered her a standing ovation. In no time, a video of Boyle’s audition set YouTube on fire with viewers all over the world clicking to see the latest singing sensation, not to mention the looks of shock on
This was not your typical obscurity-to-limelight story of a 17-year-old, stick thin girl with perfect make up and the voice of an angel who had charmed a nation. Susan Boyle was a middle-aged woman who in her own words had “…mad hair (and) bushy eyebrows” and who couldn’t have been farther removed from the media approved starlets of today. And yet Susan Boyle has charmed the world and has turned the media upside down. And understandably so, for when this ordinary looking woman armed with a powerful voice released her debut album I Dreamed A Dream on November 23rd it quickly topped the international music charts as the best selling CD. 15

Susan Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, in 1961. Her entry into the world was as harsh as some of the years of her childhood. As her mother was 47 at the time of her birth, the birth was difficult and Susan was briefly deprived of oxygen resulting in her developing learning difficulties, for which she was bullied in school with taunters calling her “Susie Simple”. “The majority of my childhood was quite happy until I started getting bullied at school. They used to knock me about a bit and try and make me cry” she said. “ Instead of saying ‘right, I have this disability’ and concentrating on it, I had to find my abilities and concentrate on that instead”. Thus began her voyage with music, which saw her take part in developing her vocal chords in the local church choir from the age of nine. Boyle credits her mother, Bridget Boyle, who passed away in 2007 with pushing her forward to live her dream. “This was a promise that I’d made to my mum, that I’d do something with my singing. She was the reason I pursued my singing. She was the reason I became a member of choirs and sang in clubs. Just to see what I could do. She had a good belief that I could do it.” So how has Boyle taken to fame? “I didn’t know what YouTube was until I was in the record offices and saw the clip and the number of hits and thought ‘oh my god’. I’m still trying to come to terms with it. The fans have been amazing and the mail I have received, phenomenal. Everyone has shown me such kindness and support. I’ve even had offers of dates!” Speaking of dates, for now, her ten-year old cat Pebbles keeps her company but she is hopeful that someday she will meet the right person.

Back in her hometown of Blackburn, people have gone rather manic with complete strangers even offering to do her shopping! But the road to fame has not been all cherry: Boyle has had to endure harsh criticism in the media as well as widespread reporting of her much publicized stint at The Priory, a private psychiatric clinic in London, where she was taken for extreme exhaustion.

“This was a promise that I’d made to my mum... She was the reason I pursued my singing.” “I hadn’t slept properly for about a week and I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was in there for three days and I’ve never felt so tired, but I look back on it now and it was a necessity. I wanted to get a rest and a break at the time without all the cameras you know.“ Boyle has undergone quite a transformation from the time she first appeared on screens. She’s lost weight but maintains “…though the outwardness has changed, inside I’m still the same, but a bit more refined now.” After the show, Simon Cowell offered Boyle her lifelong dream: to make a record. After 23 years of dreaming the dream, she sat staring at it half expecting someone to come up to her and say ‘haha love, we’re kidding’. The first song Boyle recorded on the album was ‘I Dreamed A Dream,’ the song that she sang at her audition. ‘Wild Horses’ is also on her album, which personally resonated with her. “It’s a song about determination. I am a determined woman, despite the bullying I’ve had in the past. It’s a song about proving yourself as your own woman. I instantly loved that song. It’s a song about knowing that whatever happens to you, you’ll be alright”. And Ms. Boyle is better than alright. She’s living her dream. Her latest CD is available through Sony Music.

O
ne of Abdulrahman Al Kubaisi’s art pieces almost ended up in the garbage, instead of on display at the Waqif Art Centre.
He created the piece as part of the Dar Al Founoun Art School’s abstract workshop, and it was displayed at the Waqif Art center along side professional artists, as part of the German-Qatari Cultural Weeks.
“I didn’t like the squares on (the red painting). I wanted them to be the same side,” he said, of his piece which became a fan favourite after his teacher fished it out of the trash. “I haven’t even done anything (like this). I don’t think I’ve even ever used paint before here! I really liked it. I just felt like there wasn’t enough time, I wanted more!” He also created a piece using the colours of the Qatar and German flags. The 24-yearold, who intends to study either art history or architecture, has been taking courses at the Art School for several months, however this was the first time he’d attempted abstract styles. “It’s expressing art with emotions and lines and colours,” he said.
According to his teacher, Clotilde LafontKonig, a German-French artist invited to Qatar to teach the workshop, that’s what makes abstract paintings so appealing. “We were asked to come to try to bring this modern art here, because apparently they don’t really do this type of painting. They discovered it, they loved it. I tell you, they really played like children, really creating,” she said. The art scene in Doha is still in its infancy, and organizers of the event say they hope bringing in different types of art will help it grow up big and strong. As they rise from the ashes, the passion of the Qatar Animal Welfare Society’s volunteers burns even more. QH takes a look at the current situation of the devoted community as they take care of their four-legged friends.
F
ire consumed a part of the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) in September, razing a building and taking the lives of innocent animals. To some, the sight of flames ravaging the surrounding was unbearable. So were the cries of desperation of forty animals, all at the same time.
She was at home eating lunch when everything happened. “We have no idea that it would go that quickly. We thought we would have more time,” she said. People started showing up immediately to help out. “People we didn’t know turned up there. And the dogs, they just opened the doors and let all the dogs out into the farm,” she continued.

“The community is fantastic. Everybody wants to help. We have a couple of companies that have said they will look at the financial cost of rebuilding. We’ve got architects that have done beautiful drawings, stunning plans. They’re just about to put it into 3D graphics for us. It is a stateof-the-art shelter, it’s beautiful,” said Berry. Even though things are looking up, there’s one thing that’s hindering them from fully realising their dream, land. Their initial concern right after the incident was how they could continue providing shelter for the stray animals. In an instant, help started to emerge as people began turning up at their animal refuge.

QH catches up with the man behind the Qatar Museums Authority, and finds out what’s lying under the desert sand, and how it can change the way we view history.

If you like The Shawshank Redemption and revenge fantasies, or think Wentworth Miller is dreamy in Prison Break, you must read this book. It’s the original tale of a jail-break-gone-right, with a heaping helping of revenge, betrayal and pirate-booty on the side.

With sex, intrigue, romance, betrayal, schemes, and delightfully romantic misunderstandings around every corner, it will make you tingle in all those specials places (we mean your brains- get your mind out of the gutter). You might better know this one as the inspiration for the movie ‘Cruel Intentions’, or the movie itself, ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, which saw Keanu Reeves actually form a facial expression while wearing hose.
Listen: don’t use a phrase unless you actually know what it means. Catch 22 has become synonymous with a no-win situation: and that sums up this whole novel, which takes place in the final years of World War II. It’s a satirical, scything indictment of bureaucratic idiocy– you will find yourself screaming ‘yes, yes, that’s just what that jerk at work / at the bank / in line did!’
The Wasteland T.S. Elliott
Some poetry was due on this list, and T.S. Elliot is the man. The Wasteland is an epic poem, or a collection of several poems, that no one understood when he wrote it and which are still questionable today. And that’s the point: upon each reading, you discover something different. Charting the period between the world wars, it’s a poetic look at the human condition, spanning beautiful love and aging sentiment to horrific war and urban despair.

Margaret Atwood’s a Canadian treasure, and her novel, written in the mid-80s (and subsequently made into a really terrible movie but we can’t hold that against her), is a feminist dystopian nightmare that could be all too real. Everyone’s heard of 1984 as THE novel to read about horrible-futures-coming-true, but this one doesn’t just scare you with the ends of extremism. It shows us how we got there. It leaves the reader wondering: what happened to us?

This has to be on here. Why? Because Plato has literally eaten ever bit of western literary soul since he strapped on a toga. He appears everywhere, and glimpses of him can be caught in most of the books on this list. The entire Matrix’s franchise is just one big bow down to Plato. It’s also one of those books most people will not touch- it looks scary, it looks hard, and it looks boring. Trust us, it’s not.
Want to rule the world? Put down the Tony Robbins and grab some Machiavelli. Written to literally save his job (he was sucking up to his patron), the book lines up how to rule and how to manipulate people into letting you. It coined the phrase ‘it’s better to be feared than loved’ and whether you read it as a satire, or you take it as a guidebook to world domination, it’s fascinating. And maybe should be required reading to get through high school.

Adultery, public humiliation, and betrayed love– sounds like something that would become a Lifetime movie of the week if it were written today. It’s a story that resonates even over centuries. Be prepared to bang your head against the wall in angst.

Repeat after me: Vampires. Do. Not. Sparkle. Vampire myths have existed for as long as people have been afraid of the dark and things that go bump. Bram Stoker rolled them all together and produced Dracula, drawing together bits of other myths to create one horrifyingly brilliant tale (the whole turn-into-bats thing? The garlic phobia? The sleeping in dirt and possessing a bug-eating minion fetish? All Bram.). This will have you sleeping with a nightlight for weeks, and at no point does the vampire glitter.
The Picture of Dorian Grey Oscar Wilde
Embracing a life of hedonism, with the pursuit of beauty and fulfillment of the senses as the key to life, Dorian Grey sells his soul so a portrait of him will age, rather than himself. On first glance, this is about vanity. But Oscar Wilde would never let the reader off with just one layer- the effects of each choice, good or bad, on his soul appears in the lines of the portrait. Thomas Moore If you want to understand every piece of dystopian sci fi that’s ever been made, from Children of Men to Soylent Green, read this book. Thomas Moore outlines a world that should be perfect, but isn’t. In a moment of extreme Stephen Colbert-ness, he uses this ‘perfect’ society to outline the ills he sees in his own- which still exist today. Carefully read the passages on how they treat prisoners and then try to drive past a gang of laborers. I dare you. 33

Vera Wang opened at The Pearl-Qatar recently, and QH finds out why we should be aerobicizing our credit cards to get our hands on some of her newest creations.

arrying her Lavender and Ready To Wear lines, the Vera Wang shop at the Pearl showcases the street chic and simple elegance of all the famous designer can do when she puts down the crinoline.
“She’s unique, she uses unique materials, and definitely unique shapes. You’re not going to find the same shapes in the other big names. She knows her materials, so she knows how to layer silk, chiffon, things that you might think ‘that sounds horrible’, they’re magic. They’re magic on the runway, they’re magic in the store, they’re magic on the average person,” said Sarah Champa, general manager. Along with her sister-in-law, Qatari owner Maryah Aldafa, they opened the small shop last month.

“I just have a passion for fashion, as cheesy as that sounds. So I thought why not,” said Aldafa. “I just I wanted to bring something back from the States that everyone could benefit from here. And I thought Vera Wang seemed like the perfect choice.” 41

“She knows her materials, so she knows how to layer silk, chiffon... they’re magic.” Starting first with Vera Wang evening wear in their mixed-brand store in Royal Plaza, they’ve dived headfirst into Vera Wang’s edgier lines with their allVera-all-the-time shop at The Pearl-Qatar. “ I think the fact she is so creative with her shapes makes her a good brand for everyone,” said Champa. “Lets be honest, some of the other super high end brands are for a very select size and shape. But Vera, she’s more flexible.”
And she means that- unlike many shops, where the fashion might be gorgeous but you’d need an abaya to walk the streets, Vera Wang’s creations, whether ethereal or punk rock inspired, cross both borders and cultural lines seamlessly. “We don’t really have anything that’s super short of spaghetti straps or anything like that, but even the dresses that are up to the knee are very elegant, and I don’t think there would be a sensibility issue in it. A lot of our girls, they love it.” The secret however, is what made her a star in the first place- making women feel like princesses. With her more casual lines, she does it even if they’re not marching down an aisle or wearing a veil. By capturing the duality and versatility of femininity, she’s created a line that can literally take someone from the boardroom to the ballroom, without irony.
Even the store itself is flexible- minimalist in design, Aldafa says it’s meant to reflect the warehouses where the lines originally got their start. “I think femininity is really more very subjective and very individual. Model reading yourself. If your kids see
you reading, they’re more likely to do it themselves. And, many books cross age gaps- teens and adults can enjoy the same books, so it might even give you something to talk about over the dinner table. Not to mention, many reluctant readers simply don’t have access to books- if your house if full of them, it’s harder to ignore them.
Pay attention to their interests. So your child is addicted to zombie video games? Check out any number of books (like I Am Legend, Frankenstein and many others) on similar topics. Pay attention to all their interests, on and off the page; chances are a book will speak to that.
Offer personal choice. Not every kid will
read fiction. Some will want to read guidebooks, non-fiction books, craft books, and even graphic novels (otherwise known as comic books). The point isn’t what they’re reading, it’s that they’re reading. Kids who read do better in school, have better memory retention, and even sleep better, no matter what they’re reading!

The Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2010 hits town this month, bringing with it some of the best men’s tennis players in the world. QH checks out how two of them made it to Qatar. Set to take place from January 4th till the 9th, it brings the best of Men’s Tennis back to Doha. The Main Draw for the 2010 edition of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open will start on Monday January 4th and the final will be held on Saturday January 9th. The Qualifying event for the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2010 will take place between 2nd and 3rd of January 2010. Matches are scheduled to start from Monday through Thursday at 3:00pm, while the Doubles Final is scheduled for Friday the 8th of January at 4:00pm and the Singles Final on Saturday the 9th of January at 6:00pm. Four matches will be played daily at the center court and many more at the outside courts of the Stadium. ROGER FEDERER is considered the best tennis player of all time by many sports experts as well as by his colleagues. Last November Federer was crowned ATP World Tour No.1 again, having held the same ranking for a record 237 straight weeks from 2 February, 2004, to 17 August, 2008, before Nadal entered into the picture. Roger Federer was born in Binningen, near Basel in Switzerland. The 28 – year – old holds both Swiss and South African citizenship and grew up close to the French-German borders which allowed him to speak Swiss German, German, French, and English fluently.
From an early age Federer was hypnotized by tennis, watching matches on television for hours and idolizing Boris Becker. Enrolling in school at the age of six, Federer started training mostly as recreation, not knowing it will be his path to success, fame and fortune. Little Federer participated in his first official tennis event when he was eight-yearsold; the event was called The Bambino Cup in Arlesheim. He kept training throughout his childhood and teenage years always dreaming to be the best tennis player in the world. In 1998 he joined the ATP World Tour and finished as No.1 junior in the world, winning
Wimbledon junior and doubles titles. Since then he’s won 15 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other male player. He is one of six male players to have captured the career Grand Slam. Federer has appeared in an unprecedented 21 career Grand Slam finals, and as of September 2009, has reached the semi-finals or better of the last 22 Grand Slam tournaments, a record streak that spans over five years. Federer also holds the record of reaching 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals and has appeared in 17 of the last 18. As a result of his successes in tennis, Federer was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for four consecutive years (2005–2008).

Rafael Nadal
is one of Spain’s biggest sports exports. The Spaniard has become a true international tennis phenomenon and reached the status of a celebrity, not only for his great power on the tennis courts, but also for his undeniable charisma and charm. Rafael Nadal was born in Manacor, Majorca the 3rd of June of 1986. Sports run in the Nadal family. One of Rafael’s uncles is a retired soccer player and he also has an uncle who is a tennis coach. By the time Rafael Nadal was 12 years old he was already winning regional tennis championships as well as Spanish and European titles in his age group. Rafael was also very interested in soccer and his father made him decide between the two sports so his education wouldn’t be affected. By the time Nadal turned 14 he was asked by the Spanish Tennis Federation to move to
Barcelona to enhance his tennis career and training. But this offer was turned down by his family as they believed it would hurt his education and his uncle was more than capable to train him. This decision eventually proved to be the right one since Nadal entered the ranking of the World’s top 50 players at age 17. Since then the Spanish tennis player has won six Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles and also was part of the Spain Davis Cup team that won the finals in 2004 and 2009. Nadal is currently ranked World No.2 but he was ranked World Number No. 1 from 18 August 2008 to 5 July 2009. In 2009, he became the first player to simultaneously hold Grand Slam titles on clay, grass and hardcourt. His success on clay has earned him the nickname “The King of Clay.”

Turquoise is the colour of the evolved soul. It has the ability to inspire you to accomplish your goals and believe in yourself. It encourages inner healing by enhancing empathy and caring. Nature of Turquoise: Studies in colour psychology show that turquoise is a colour that controls and heals human emotions, creating emotional balance and stability. It radiates peace, calm and tranquility because of its blue undertones while balancing the nature of potential growth of green with the uplifting energy of yellow. The colour is believed to heighten intuitive ability and open the door to spiritual growth. In fact, Native Americans believed the stone recharged human spirits during times of mental stress and tiredness, alleviating feelings of loneliness.
A combination of blue and a bit of yellow, turquoise fits in on the colour scale between green and blue. By nature, it is a calming cool hue that inspires relaxation and confidence. Why do you think this colour is traditionally used most in spas as a choice for their walls and accessories? Spa practitioners strongly believe you only have to focus on the colour turquoise, whether on a wall or clothing, to feel instant calm and gentle invigoration, ready to face the world all over again!
Wearing Turquoise: For spring 2010, the most desirable
colour will be tropical turquoise, naturally evoking feelings of calm ocean waters and tranquil beach vacations. The amazing colour looks best in combination with warm grays and dark chocolate browns. Vibrant bright colours add a sense of excitement: especially when set against practical neutrals like gray and brown.
To add pizzazz to any turquoise ensemble add an accessory in a hot pink, orange or coral red. Also, don’t forget that blue jeans and a turquoise top will look extremely appealing. If you have never used turquoise in your wardrobe or are a little afraid of the colour, then buy an amazing accessory in cool blue and turquoise tones and match it to your shoes and purse!
Using Turquoise: When using this colour in your home, cool it down with grey to give the area a cool spa-like relaxing atmosphere or warm it up by combining it with orange and coral red. Famous already is the combination we see everywhere of chocolate brown.
