The month of May was marked by two path-breaking events in Qatar, one emphasizing its technological prowess and the other projecting its solidarity in sports promotion. The opening of the massive Mesaieed power generation facilities by H.H. The Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani marked an era in Qatar’s steadfast progress into an energy surplus state, bringing it a step closer to realizing its dream of being an electricity exporter. Surplus power would undoubtedly boost further development and growth as envisaged in the “National Vision 2030” plans. Equally pioneering was the ambitious bid placed by Qatar for the 2022 Football World Cup. Closer to home, the Qatar National Olympic Ice Hockey team heats up the Villaggio rink this month, and the Handball Finals hit Aspire Zone. Also the Emir Cup 2010 was unforgettable. Turning to Qatar’s equally colourful entertainment arena, the Saudi Cultural Week presented Dohaiites another eventful week, illustrating the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom. Those who might have missed it for any reason had the Doha Jazz Festival 2010- ‘When East so evenly met West.’ The arts are alive this month at the Qatar National Theatre, with the opera Carmen and Yerez, an Armenian dance troupe. Be soothed with the gentle sounds of concerts by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, who closes the month with a performance of classic show tunes to keep your toes tapping. Or get your pulse racing and find some fun for the whole family, with the newest offerings in the Gondolania Indoor Theme Park in Villaggio. Even hosting some holidays this month, Filipino National Day and Father’s Day, there’s always something happening this June! Finally, it is with regret that the Chairman and the staff at Qatar Happening say goodbye to Executive Editor Suzanne Grant. She will be returning to Canada this month, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Ahmed Hassan Bilal Chairman 6

QH RECOMMENDS

Check out all the things that are lifting our luggage this month! Playing with Our Food

Merry Merry Men

The next level of anthropomorphizing things that should not be anthropomorphized (damn you Lol cats- we knew you wouldn’t stop with cheezburger!), www.myfoodlooksfunny.com brings you food that has more than a bit of attitude. It’s gone moldy with sarcasm! Marshmallows mourn each other’s death as they’re destroyed by Rice Crispies, Apples bite back, more than a few eggs look more than a little worried, and we’re once again reminded: do not try to beat the Japanese for weird-cute rulers of the world. They (and their bento boxes) will always win.

We were pleasantly surprised when we rolled into Villaggio to see Robin Hood recently, and got a heaping helping of Alan Doyle! As the lead singer for the Canadian band Great Big Sea he’s been charming us for years with his peppy Celtic inspired Newfoundland sea shanties, but he appears on the big screen for the first time as one of Robin’s Merry Men (he’s the one with the lute). We’ll try to ignore how they tried to pass off his raging ‘Newf accent as British. Great Big Sea’s albums are available on itunes.

Emo Robot Have we learned nothing from Schwarzenegger? Give robots feelings, it will not go well for us! Yet these science types just don’t listen, so we bring you: Cybraphon. The latest project from the Edinburg-based artist collective Found, it’s inspired by turn of the last century bands-in-boxes. Only this one gets really sad if people don’t follow it on Twitter. Made of a variety of robotic instruments in what looks like a china hutch, it’s linked into online communities and is affected by the reviews and comments about itself (which is trolls obsessively 24 hours a day). The way those reviews make it feel (and they’ve even given it a meter, with emotions from Desolation to Delirium printed in old timey script) decides how Adam Lambert its music gets. Bravo art geeks, Skynet should be going online any day now. If it can finish weeping into its eyeliner.

12

Snugglicious

At Last! We heart Urbansouq.com. Billing itself as the ‘the one-stop Middle Eastern online fashion and lifestyle resource’ it actually is! Topics go from makeup application tips to where to find the latest fashions and lifestyle elements that usually have to come into Doha in an aramex box. Brilliant! Today, we thank the web goblins! Check it out at www.urbansouq.com

A blanket, you can wear? What a magical world we live in! This looks ridiculous, it sounds ridiculous, and moreover it seems to be the perfect way to traumatize your children by wearing it in public, but the Snuggie, a blanket with sleeves just feels... right. Particularly as summer approaches and every public venue in the city turns their AC down to walk-in-freezer levels, we wonder if this will be the next fashion trend to sweep Doha! Get yours at www.getsnuggie.com.

We’re on Twitter! Yes, we’re tweeting. Come check out our little blue bird! Or just go old school and friend us on facebook!

QH RECOMMENDS

We’ve scoured the globe and found some of our fav things to start the summer right!

Little girl, big voice!

For Your Entertainment Adam. Lambert. We did not want to enjoy this, and yet, he’s creeped into our inner ear with his surprisingly catchy tunes! Ignore the cover of the CD, where he attempts to be part MJ and part Freddie Mercury, and focus instead on the rhythm and beats of his debut album. We can almost forget the fact he was almost an American Idol. Not to mention his inability to spell (case in point the insanely stick-in-your-head ‘Whataya want From Me’). Behind the eyeliner he’s actually decent and we will shoult it loud and proud: we like Adam Lambert! Now we have to go hide our copies of Nevermind and London Calling before they’re taken away from us as we’re clearly unfit parents. For Your Entertainment is available from Sony music.

What do you call an 18-year-old power belter? Charice. Thanks to YouTube, this wonder girl was able to capture the attention of many and even Ellen DeGeneres. Charice has gone worldwide performing duets with big names such as Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. Even if she’s only 4’11”, she has soared to great heights at her age by performing on international stages and garnering recognition around the world. Her massive hit single “Pyramid” featuring Lyaz is just the start of greater things, so expect global musical domination from this internet phenom! We simply can’t get enough of her! Get the low-down at www.charicemusic.com

Gelat-ho! Get ye to the ice cream! The temperature is rising, but there’s no need to lose your cool (or for that matter make ill thought out puns). Head to Souq Waqif and La Dolce Vita for the best scoops in town. Our fav combo? A scoop of dark chocolate and a scoop of pear in a waffle cone! La Dolce Vita is located in Souq Waqif.

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE

By George P. Burdell

Summer is here, and as Rihanna said, please don’t stop the music! QPO keeps it rocking this June, wrapping up this month with a special concert highlighting magical works of musical theatre with selections from classic Broadway musicals. 22

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE

Please excuse us while our inner theatre dweeb drools (and cowers under the bed from the evil that is Andrew Lloyd Webber). QH caught up with special guest conductor Nader Abbassi to get the inside scoop on what it’s like waving the baton. QH: How did you get started conducting? NA: Before I started conducting I was a bassoon player and an opera singer. This gave me the opportunity to work with many great conductors and to learn from them. I also took conducting classes with Ernst Schelle, who has been a wonderful teacher to me. My first chance to conduct an orchestra myself was at the Opera in Geneva, where I was asked to compose and conduct a new piece for the Ballet.

Homegrown. Nader Abassi has come to Doha so many times he considers it a second home.

you have to know every detail of the piece that you are conducting: which instrument is playing, what and how it should be performed. But even more important is that you have make sure everybody plays together at the right time- it’s all about precision and the right timing. Also you have to (know) a lot (about the) culture of the period and style of each composer, musicians have to feel that you have lots of things to give. QH: What’s exciting about conducting?

QH: What’s hard about conducting? NA: A conductor is like the captain of a ship or the pilot of a plane - you are not allowed to make a mistake because everybody depends on you. As a conductor

NA: When in the moment of the concert everything comes together the way you imagined and all the musicians play together as one and everyone is carried by the same energy – the musicians and the public.

QH: What’s it like conducting the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra? NA: I first came to Doha in 2009 and since then I have come here nearly every month– it has become my second home. Although in many orchestras there are musicians from several different nationalities, it is the wonderful thing about this orchestras that it brings together so many talented musicians from so many different parts of the world. I think we can learn so much from each other and it is an inspiration to all of us. QH: What’s it like guest conducting? NA: The musicians of any good orchestra are highly trained and professional – which gives a common base of understanding that is universal. But naturally each orchestra has its own very specific character, that you need to discover when you first work with them – just like every conductor is different. When you have worked with an orchestra for a longer time there is mutual understanding that doesn’t need many 24

words anymore – just like in a family – it’s a very personal colour you will add to the orchestra.

THE PROGRAMME The programme for the concert includes:

QH: The program is mainly showtunes and songs from musicals– why? NA: I think that this program will open the doors to a broader audience than the normal classical concert. It is a very accessible program that will make many people interested in our work and encourage them to attend our concerts. It simply is great music that deserves to be performed by a first class orchestra – and by the way it is great fun to play these pieces! QH: Some of the songs are quite old, but people still know and love them- what makes them so enduring? NA: This is the “magic” of a good song – it will resist time, because it still makes us feel the same way as when we first heard and loved it.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

By Jorge Granda

The season may have just ended, but horse racing stays in hearts all across Qatar! QH sat down with one of the country’s best jockeys to get the inside scoop of the season that was, his perception of horse racing in the country and his life as a famous jockey.

S

tephan Ladjadj loves horses.

The 31-year-old, originally from Paris, has been riding in Qatar for over five years and is one of the highest representatives of the sport in the country, culminating the season ranked at No.3 after winning 40 races.

Small Wonder. Stephan Ladjadj is ranked No. 3 after winning 40 races this season.

support of its owner HH Sheik Abdulah Bin Nasser Al Thani, the young rider has given the equestrian world in Qatar many memorable moments and has won over 200 races. “My first season riding (was) for Al Naif Stud farm at the Qatar Derby Cup – one of the most important meetings of the season – I won six races and even though I broke my wrist that day, I continued riding winning the last and most important race. That was one of the most special days in my entire career,” he said.

“I (have) loved horses as long as I can remember. I started in this business when I was 14 years old and I have never looked back. I came to Qatar when I was 26 as I wanted to experience a different culture and ride the famous Arab Horses. I first came for six months to check out the scene, “Qatar is a country that is working very hard but I fell in love with the country and its towards becoming a point of reference in horse racing and reaching the level of horses and decided to stay.” France and Hong Kong – currently leading the way. We have the best level in the Stephan is an exclusive rider for the prestigious Al Naif Stud farm and with the Middle East after Dubai and Qatar is buying

growing and people are more interested in what we are doing.”

“Qatar is a country that is working very hard towards becoming a point of reference in horse racing

“This season in particular was very powerful. You could see that the level of competition was higher and we had more races than other seasons. The training was also intensified and we had more support form the public. The horse racing culture is

Not all is glory and trophies though. During the season he wakes up every day at 4:00 a.m. to train his horses six days a week.

“The horses are the ones that have to be very fit and powerful, so I train them every day with the help of the trainer who tells me what to do and how to handle the horse. In the afternoons I go to the gym to also keep myself fit.”

He also must stay trim, and watch his diet carefully. “Weight is very important for a jockey. The lighter you are the easier you can ride the horse.” During his free time Stephan enjoys a very simple life, not what you would expect of a young talented and famous jockey. “My life is a routine. During the week I prepare myself mentally and physically for the races on Thursdays. After the races I always go to a nice restaurant to have dinner with my wife and on the weekends I enjoy boating with my friends. There is nothing extravagant about my life.” 31

Musical Ninjas You may have seen an opera, and not even know it! In the modern era, musicals have begun to fly back towards operatic structures, breathing new life into the art form and sneaking it into your ipod. Porgy and Bess and Candide were some of the earliest musicals in the 1930s to do this, but others quickly followedfrom West Side Story, Brigadoon and Evita to Les Miserables and Avenue Q, modern musicals use elements of opera to tell their stories. Works by Stephen Sondheim captured a more traditional operatic style perfectly in works like Sweeney Todd and Into The Woods, while Jonathan Larson epitomizes the ‘Rock Opera’ in Rent. He didn’t start it though- the first ‘Rock Opera’ was Tommy, the fourth album by The Who.

QH checks out Di Capri, the latest restaurant to open at La Cigale. By Cecilia Leigh

I

love Italian food. I am an unrepentant pasta-holic. Linguine, spaghetti, penne are my vice and Chef Boyardee is my enabler.

So for that reason I was understandably excited to the bottom of my tomato-loving toes when I heard a new Italian restaurant, Di Capri, was opening at La Cigale. Located in what was once the Cigar Lounge, the restaurant still retains that laid back feel. With chairs designed by the same company that outfits race cars, it’s plush, but doesn’t exactly feel like Italy. That’s helped a bit when Eros Ramozotti begins crooning from the speakers, and when the starters arrive. Priced between QR 20 and QR 120 for an appetizer, with the antipasti bar going for QR 45 a person, it’s a bit more lush than my canned ravioli, but way tastier: the fav at our table was the Parmesan tart and Sicilian arancini, a tart of ripe cheese in a bed of fresh tomato sauce. 35

Simon Westney is a happy man. Wouldn’t you be if you spent all day on the golf course? Not that it is all play: Simon, 29, works very hard at his position as a teaching professional. Simon is one of nine golf professionals at The Doha Golf Club, all PGA qualified, who teach golfers of all ages. “Golf has become more popular over the last few years as courses become more accessible and money is more available” said Westney. “Golf is continuing to grow all around the Middle East, and the professional tournaments played here in Qatar, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi are now established and vital tournaments in the European Tour.”

40

No where is the growth more noticeable than with children. “In the one and a half years since I began teaching the number of junior groups has increased from 12 to 22 two and extra pros have been added to the team,” he said. Juniors start at around the age of five. “They are usually inspired by their parents who either watch or play golf,” he said. “We can very quickly tell those children who

want to play apart from those who lack the interest and motivation levels required to progress their skills and knowledge.” The children practice in groups for an hour at a time, up to three times a week, usually in the afternoons, after school and on weekends.

“On weekends we have fun competitions, and encourage the kids who are interested to go and compete,” he said. “Lots of kids want to do well but competition too early is not a good thing. Age seven to eight is about right, generally not any younger.”

“We have fun competitions, and encourage the kids who are interested to go and compete.”

“We plan each lesson and have certain goals, set skills and targets. In addition to teaching a skill we concentrate on building an environment. If that is not right we will not get the most out of a session,” Said Westney.

In Doha things are very different to the UK from where Simon hails. There he worked as an Assistant Golf Professional, plying his trade at a local golf course as well as teaching kids on a program called “Tri- Golf” which was sponsored by local councils, and national lottery funds.

The environment includes moving kids from practice to playing competitions.

“Many golf professionals in the UK are now following suit and helping to get the link

between school participation and junior golf club membership. This is something that could be developed in Qatar too,” he said. “Here we have to work differently. It was a bit of a culture shock to begin with but once one gets used to it, it is fine. I like the variety of work here, working with golfers of all ages and abilities and the fact that we can teach for the majority of the year in a good climate, which is obviously different to the UK.” The Doha Golf Club is open all week, offering an 18 hole and 9 hole courses, on both their Championship Course and their Academy Course. The Championship Course hosts the annual European Tour Commericalbank Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy, as one of the longest par 72 courses on the tour, while the Academy Course is suitable for novices. Tee times can be booked in advance, with fees ranging from QR 90 to QR 675 for members, nonmembers and juniors. For more information, check out www.dohagolfclub.com.

ut when the Six Senses Spa at the Sharq Village and Spa proposed their month-long get-fit program to me, I couldn’t turn it down. And in truth, I didn’t really want to. I’ll let you in on a little secret that is lurking around my stomach region like an overfed housecat who reads too many Garfield cartoons: I’m fat. The Doha 15 found me fast and invited their friends over for a hootenanny.

not doing so well on my own. So part of me is excited for this month to begin – the other part, the part that prefers to sit on the sofa scorfing peanut butter cups, is attempting to bludgeon that part to death with a metaphorical stale donut.

The program is simple: every morning I’ll arrive at the gym for a fitness class. In the afternoon I’ll return for another class or personal training, followed by weekly detoxifying and distressing treatments. Billed as a ‘Wellness Recovery program’, as Wellness The program sounded simple: twice daily physical activity at Six Senses, and a lovely box of food delivered Manager Carryn explains this isn’t a diet, or even just an exercise routine: it’s a lifestyle change and a full to my door every day by Slim n Lite, the company body transformation, tailored to my needs. Which are contracted by the Sharq to feed me for the month. So join me, if you dare, as I fight the flubber on my journey apparently that I’m a stressed out goon slowly killing myself with layer after layer of flubbery caffeine-fueled to fit! stress. So in addition to the formal classes and treatments at the spa, I’ll also have daily homework: everything from reading a book, to breathing deeply and mediating, to ‘personal grooming’.

WEEK 1:

Spa Managers, they’re like the Godfather, only more tan.

This really wasn’t an offer I could refuse. I’ve long been a proponent of the importance of getting help to make drastic lifestyle changes. You wouldn’t trust a bipolar monkey with poor impulse control to cut your hair, so why do we always assume we can govern our own diet and exercise programs right off the bat? Clearly, I’m 46

The idea is to etch out daily time for yourself– whether on the treadmill, reading a novel, or doing something silly and girly like when you’d spend two hours painting your nails when you were 12. As they tell me, it’s about putting yourself first. For the next four weeks I’ll give that a shot, and hope I don’t do a Narcissi swan dive into my own ego.

QH SENSATION LIVE

Oh Yoga, why must you thwart me? Three days in, I realize something: I utterly hate yoga. I know. Who hates yoga? People are supposed to love yoga or at least lie and say they do while never, ever ever attempting to put themselves in anything involving the words ‘downward’ or ‘dog’. It’s the yuppy trend that just won’t die. My father even owns a yoga mat. Thing is, I used to like it. I think mainly because I was good at it. I grew up taking dance classes and was flexible. Unfortunately, I’m also oddly competitive (despite my hippy upbringing that should have me all excited over anything where the phrase ‘goddess energy’ can be thrown around without sarcasm). But when I can’t get deep enough into a posture because my belly gets in the way, I want to shrivel up in fat-kid shame. Yoga this first week instantly transports me back to fifth grade gym class, not a feeling I particularly relish at 8:45 in the morning. But, fundamentally, I’m a joiner, so I watch the sweat drip off my nose and pool on the purple plastic of the mat while everyone around me easily contorts like human pretzels. The room is hot. I’m wearing a sweater because I’m too embarrassed to take it off, and I lie there in corpse pose at the end wondering where, exactly, did I turn that humiliating myself in front of toned and tight yogis was part of my job. But the gym, ah the gym! The gym gives me solace and makes me feel so much better.

This, I can do. The gym has never been a place to look pretty for me: I am not the girl who puts on her carefully selected gym ensemble, fluffs her already fluffy ponytail, and giggles while admiring the male contingency glistening and flexing their biceps. I sweat. And I wear ratty T-shirts. And I pant, and grunt, and get red in the face, and have a darn good time doing it. The first few days, it hurts- it’s hard, I can’t run or bike or lift as much as I used to. A personal training session has my thighs burning and my lungs aching, but I love it. That thing runners talk about? That glorious, incredible high that has you tingling and smiling for absolutely no reason? Oh yeah, I can get that from 40 minutes on the stationary bike. I forgot what it felt like, to be this bone-tired, to feel this alive, and to feel this connected to every joint, every vertebra in my spine. I sleep like a baby. I could get into this. If only I didn’t have to do yoga.

Box O Mystery The food is actually not as terrifying as previously suspected. It looks like. . . food. And it arrives every day neatly packaged with little stickers telling me what’s for dinner, lunch, breakfast, and snack. I don’t know how they do it, but within my mandated calorie-count I manage to have pizza, lasagna, mashed potatoes and (praise you sugar), chocolate. I start looking forward to 3 p.m., when the box arrives at my office, so I can take a mid

afternoon break and eat my sweet. The gut churning guilt that usually accompanies dieting with me (that sinking feeling that you’ve inadvertently consumed 1000 extra calories and thus ruined the entire day by spreading a morsel too much peanut butter on your toast) doesn’t exist when your dietary country comes with labels. I’m not cheating– I don’t want to. There are carbs here. And dessert.

WEEK 2:

Fit ball, I adore you! By the end of the week, I want to die. My body has never hurt so much. I’m stiff, I’m sore, I’m walking like a 90-year-old woman and all I want is a nap. I conk out on Thursday night around 10 and spend Friday moving as little as humanly possible. But Saturday rolls around and it’s time for another session.

This will (foreshadowing alert!) become one of my favorite days all week long. Fit ball, a class done on giant inflatable balls, is like being given license to be a child again, rolling, bouncing, and pretending to fly on a giant ball, all in the name of exercise. Plus, I get that delightful virtuous feeling of having done something active while everyone else I know is either still asleep or gorging themselves at brunch somewhere. Win! Best part? Getting changed afterwards to go to a movie with friends, I realize: the dress I planned to wear today is loose.

COLOUR SCOPE

By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. Nature of Orange: To the human eye, orange is a very hot

colour. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange is considered a warm colour that stimulates emotions and even the appetite. Many Italian restaurants use the colour orange to invoke images of Tuscany.

Using Orange: If you want to get noticed without screaming, consider wearing orange - it demands attention. Additionally, wearing a softer orange such as peach is even friendlier and more soothing. Peachy oranges are less flamboyant than their redder cousins but are still energetic.

Orange can be found in nature in the changing leaves of fall, the setting sun, and the skin and meat of citrus fruit. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.

In keeping with its transitional appearance in nature, you might use shades of orange to indicate transition or a bridge between two opposing factors.

The happy side of the rainbow is definitely orange!

Orange is often synonymous with autumn yet the brighter oranges are actually summer colours. Use shades of orange for seasonal-themed fall or summer materials. Orange is mentally stimulating as well as sociable. Use it to get people thinking or to get them talking. That is why experts say orange and blue are the new colour of money.

Using Orange with Other Colours:

Orange really pops with a medium blue, purple and yellow. It can be a fiery hot combination or, in tamer shades, a fresh, fruity experience. Mix orange and green and you have a tropical look. Use caution mixing orange and pink unless you want to recreate a vibrating, 60s psychedelic look. Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design; that is why it is used for promoting food products and toys.

The more you like orange,

the better you are at implementing change

80

The less you like orange,

you can be overly critical and too focused on minor details

The Dewey Color SystemŽ is the world’s only validated, color-based, personality testing instrument. It’s the first proven system that scientifically predicts the recognized major psychometric personality factors without language. www.deweycolorsystem.com
