FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Summer is officially here! Here at QH, we couldn’t be more excited. Summer represents a great opportunity to enjoy all the indoor activities Doha has to offer. This month, we spoke with the talent at some of the best places in Doha to enjoy an evening of great music, including Big Mouth, the resident band at Paloma at InterContinental Doha and DJ Roger Choueiry, the resident DJ at La Cigale. We also took the opportunity to check out some beautiful art this month at the latest exhibition at Katara Cultural Village. QH found out what motivated the Ambassador of Peru to Qatar to bring an exhibition on Machu Picchu to Doha. On the fashion front, we tried our hand at Do It Yourself (DIY) fashion, creating some unique looks you can recreate at home. Or, use our tips for inspiration to create your own special designs! The sports scene in Qatar remains strong despite the heat, with the focus shifting towards indoor sports. We spoke with Hans Bylemans, the man behind the concept of Qmotion, a multi-cultural private organization focusing on sports and recreational activities for expat families. We also got an inside look at the World 9-Ball Championship Qatar 2011. This prestigious event came to Qatar for the first time last year and is now an integral part of the world pool scene. With an abundance of amazing new restaurants opening in Qatar every month, we continue to check out some of the greatest fare offered around the city. We had a great time sipping tea and sampling scones for our high tea roundup. We also took on the challenge of 11 courses of fabulous Italian food at Bice, sampled international cuisine at the new restaurant Blue, located in Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and Spa, and immersed ourselves in Japanese culture at the new Doha hotspot Megu. One of the things we are most excited for this month is the launch of our photo contest with Creative Commons. QH and Creative Commons have teamed up to showcase talented amateur and professional photographers in Doha. Interested photo buffs can submit their photos to Creative Commons; the winner of the contest will have their photo on QH’s September cover. For more details about the contest or to submit your own brilliant photos, check out www.creativecommons.qa/QHphotocontest. Thanks for reading.

Summer is here and it’s hot, hot, hot! When we weren’t busy picking out new swimsuits and sipping frozen margs, we were checking out ways to keep cool and have fun indoors. We checked out several clubs to find out about the great live music they offer, dusted off our yoga mats and tried a variety of indoor fitness classes and put our iPods on repeat to create the ultimate summer road trip playlist. We also cut our leggings in half, dyed our jeans and found new uses for safety pins in order to spruce up our summer wardrobes while saving money with DIY fashion. One thing we are looking forward to is the new exhibit at Katara featuring photos of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We hope you love it as much as we do.

QH RECOMMENDS Glee Geeks! The cast of Glee continues to dominate the musical world with their spunky remakes of songs from their hit show. GLEE The Music Season Two Volume 5 is an epic CD, with a variety of spectacular versions of killer songs, including the perky combination of Thriller and Heads Will Roll, the Prince classic Kiss, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now and Katy Perry’s inspiring hit Firework. The Glee crew manages to redo old favourites, usually without ruining them, in addition to introducing us to songs we didn't already know, like Get It Right and Loser Like Me. The soundtrack rolls from fast-paced, high-energy tracks to sweet ballads, providing the perfect mix to get you through your day. Available through Sony Music.
Delhi Devil Every flirty sip of the Delhi Devil mocktail at Asha restaurant is a delight. This sweet, fizzy beverage is so refreshing and quenches your thirst while pleasing your taste buds. The beverage concocters start by muddling pomegranates and mint together, then add in lemon juice, ginger syrup and grenadine. This fizzy treat is topped off with 7UP and soda water to balance out the sweetness of the pomegranates. We love this antioxidant-rich drink for its fabulous use of pomegranates and its light and tangy taste. The Delhi Devil mocktail is available at Asha restaurant, located in Villaggio Mall.
Moisture Surge For a summer look that is polished without looking too “done,” try Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. This lightly tinted moisturizer is incredible not only because it means applying one super lotion instead of slathering on sunscreen, moisturizer and foundation, but also because it lessens the amount of stuff you have spackled on your face. Tinted moisturizer allows your natural beauty (hello freckles!) to come through while evening out skin tone and creating a more flawless face. The lotion feels light on skin, goes on smooth and stays on in the heat, making it perfect for both day and night.
Strawberry Sensations Sink your teeth into the amazing strawberry éclair at PAUL for a summer treat that is fresh, light and oh-so-satisfying. This fabulous éclair is soft and sweet, with a cream filling and plenty of fresh strawberries. Every bite equals immeasurable pleasure. The luscious cream mingles with the sweet strawberries, resulting in a yummy dessert that is simple but delectable. This is the ideal summer dessert – not too heavy but still hearty and satisfying. The strawberry éclair is available at PAUL, located in Villaggio Mall.

Live music is a rare treat in Doha, a land of DJs and iPods. Fortunately, the international band Big Mouth hits the stage in Paloma at InterContinental Doha six nights a week from now until August to provide music lovers with strong beats and smooth vocals.
B
ig Mouth is a band that clearly loves playing together. The young group, who arrived in Doha in May, caused quite a stir at The Big Day Out, the two-day outdoor music festival at InterContinental Doha. Now, Big Mouth is the resident band in Paloma at InterContinental Doha Sundays to Fridays.
The four friends don’t take themselves too seriously and joke around on stage before and during their set at Paloma. Beautiful blonde vocalist Tamara Seeley croons hits ranging from To Make You Feel My Love to I’ll Stand By You. Seeley is backed up by Ste Burke on vocals and guitars, John Scott on bass guitar and Mark Bottomley on drums. Burke also takes the lead on vocals once in awhile, making the ladies swoon with his version of songs like the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ hit City of Angels.
QH chatted with the friendly band before one of their performances to find out how they got started and their plans for the future. WH: How did the band get started? BM: Ste and John met in England a few years ago. Since then, they met Mark and went to play on a cruise ship, met Tamara and the rest is history. QH: How long have you been playing together for? BM: All together, we have been playing together since December 2010. QH: Is this your first time in Qatar? BM: Yes

Our favourite ever would have to be a New Year celebration, on the beach again, but this time at the Burj al Arab in Dubai. Great atmosphere and amazing fireworks. QH: What are your plans for the rest of 2011? BM: Hopefully we can carry on building our reputation in Doha, and get Paloma recognized as the best place in town to see live music. BM: The people in Paloma are great so we’ll have to say that’s the best thing about it at the moment. QH: What are some of the challenges you face as a band? BM: Being in a band is easy! We’re constantly learning new songs to keep everyone interested so we always push ourselves musically in that way. QH: If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be? BM: We all come from a really varying musical background so it’s hard to name one person for us all! Stevie Wonder is the one name we all agree on. Between us though, there is Jimi Hendrix, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Metallica … so many different influences.

Madison Piano Bar is revitalizing Sunday nights, making the once-boring night of the week an opportunity to enjoy great music and fabulous company. QH takes a look at this hidden hot spot and the man behind the lounge’s famous DJ night, DJ Roger Choueiry.
E
very Sunday night, a continuouslygrowing group of music lovers is converging on La Cigale to settle down into the plush settings of Madison Piano Bar. The piano bar is part club, part lounge, with the biggest piano in the world settled in the middle of the room, an always-full bar and a comfortable amount of tables nestled into the romantically-lit space. The quality of music is what elevates this lounge/bar to another level of happening hotspot.
The always-smiling DJ has played in many places, including Tunisia, Egypt, Cyprus and Dubai. He is enjoying his time in Qatar. “So far, it’s very good,” Roger said. “I like it because it’s a small country and you can build a reputation very fast.” However, Qatar needs to open more clubs in order to give DJs a chance to build solid careers in the country, said Choueiry. As of right now, the music and club scene in Doha is small compared to other countries.
But for now, Choueiry continues to infuse the country with hot tracks almost every night. On Sundays, he DJs by himself in Madison, playing everything from Estelle’s American Boy to U2’s One Love. He plays a fabulous mix of music, including house, oldies and Latino music. Choueiry tries to keep the music varied to keep up with his international crowd. “I have to please all kinds of people because we have many nationalities here,” Choueiry said. “Sunday nights we don’t stick to house or one style The DJ grew up in a musical family in of music; we try to please all people.” Lebanon. On Sundays, Choueiry starts to spin tracks around 10:30 p.m. The accessible DJ keeps things simple, in a white t-shirt and jeans. Regulars come in and wave hello and he enthusiastically greets them back. Choueiry seems to have settled into a comfortable groove in Madison, despite the fact that he hasn’t really been here for that long. But this really should not come as any surprise. The club scene may differ from country to country but one thing always remains constant for Choueiry – his love of music and his desire to keep his audience happy.

VIRGIN RECOMMENDS
Here’s how you can find out what’s hot this month: QH brings you the top selections from Virgin Megastore. And watch for the QH heart in stores!
Civilization: The West and the Rest by Niall Ferguson
Niall Ferguson’s new book is a story of power, money, empire and war. He questions how the poor governing bodies of some western European countries became so predominant to the extent that their doctrines and political practices spread over the rest of the world. It is a book that can easily open a heated debate between scholars. As are all his previous books, Civilization is sharp and controversial.
Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi
Yotam Ottolenghi’s cooking books are the hottest on the shelves at the moment. After the smashing success of his first book, the second one could have easily disappointed, but that is not the case. Even though the book is only about vegetables, it is not limiting. It is full of delicious recipes for just about every occasion, season or diet. Recipes cover every skill level, and even the most experienced professionals can't fail to be inspired by Ottolenghi's work.
Worth Dying For by Lee Child
Lee Child’s most famous character is Jack Reacher, who has become the essence of his most acclaimed series of books. Worth Dying is a book full of violence, but the violence is absolutely justified. Reacher protects the innocent and weak and empowers women. This is a great escapist novel and you will never get enough of Reacher, as he will always be on the side of the moral right even though his methods may be questionable!
An Iraqi In Paris by Samuel Shimon
The book tells the story of the incredible journey of Samuel Shimon. He left Iraq in 1979 looking for a brighter future, but to his dismay he encountered imprisonment and torture passing through Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Eventually he made it to Paris, where he was homeless. Shimon meets his problems and various twists of fate with humour and resilience.
10th Anniversary by James Patterson
Fans will be pleased to find out detective Lindsay Boxer has finally married her long-time boyfriend Joe. But happiness doesn’t last long for the murder detective as she finds herself in the middle of a traumatic case. A 15-year-old girl is found lying unconscious in the street, naked except for a cheap plastic raincoat, and haemorrhaging badly after having given birth within the last 36 hours. But the baby is nowhere to be found. The intriguing story is perfect for those who are looking for a great chilling and mystery novel

To celebrate the recent opening of the Peruvian Embassy, the embassy has set up a photography exhibition at Katara. The goal of the exhibit is to introduce the rich culture of Peru to the residents of Doha. QH spoke with Julio Florian, the new Ambassador of Peru to Qatar, to get a better understanding of the importance of the exhibit and his new role as the representative of all Peruvians in Qatar.
T
he Republic of Peru is a beautiful country situated in western South America. It shares its borders with Ecuador, Colombian, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the Pacific Ocean. Being so far away from Qatar, one may think that there can’t possibly be any similarities between both countries or, for that matter, between Peru any Arab country. But Peru and Qatar have a lot in common, which is why the Peruvian Embassy was recently established in Doha. Both countries are currently working on several agreements to further enhance their mutual cooperation in many areas. “People can think that Peru and the Arab world have nothing in common, but the reality is different,” said Julio Florian, Peruvian Ambassador to Qatar. “Our cultures are very similar to
each other. For example, our architectures look alike and in Peru we have several traditional dishes that originated in the Arab world. There are many other resemblances between the cultures. That’s why I believe there is a lot we can do together, as there are more similarities than differences between the two countries.” Florian is the person appointed by Peru to represent the country’s interest in this part of the world. Florian studied law and has been serving his country as a diplomat for 35 years. His career path has taken him to Rumania, Venezuela, Guatemala, London and many other places, but never before to the Gulf. “It is my first time in the Middle East and I feel very lucky to

have been given this opportunity,” Florian said. “I like Qatar and I am looking forward to working on the many ways we can contribute to each other’s futures.” One of the main goals of the Peruvian Ambassador is to showcase the rich culture and beauty of Peru. “I want to motivate the community of Qatar to travel to Peru and fall in love with our beautiful country,” Florian said. “I am sure Qataris will enjoy our nature, our food and our great hospitality.”
The 100 y ears of Machu P icchu’s Revelatio n to the World ex hibition w ill take plac e at Kata ra starting J une 25.

A Common Space By Jean-Marie Unger
The recent launch of Creative Commons will certainly give a boost to the artistic community in Qatar. But what exactly is Creative Commons and how does it work? QH examines the idea of flexible content rights licences.
C
reativity is flourishing in Qatar. In the arts, we have seen the emergence of the Doha Film Institute and the opening of the modern art museum Mathaf. In science, organizations such as the Qatar Science & Technology Park are conducting innovative research and bringing new technologies to market. And at universities, students are applying their young minds in an array of fields, tackling global challenges and finding new ways to express their thoughts.
All of these creative people now have a new forum to channel their ideas and innovations with the welcoming of an affiliate of Creative Commons to Qatar. Creative Commons (CC) is an international non-profit organization committed to realizing the full potential of the Internet, which it sees as universal access to research and education, full participation in culture, and driving a new era of development, growth, and productivity. Creative Commons Qatar will work to bring more voices from Qatar into the open digital realm. “Creative Commons is all about encouraging people to share their creative works more

SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY
CC Qatar will work to engage the local community in using Creative Commons principles and licences in their creative works, with the goal of growing an environment in Qatar that embraces openness, sharing and collaboration. A series of workshops is being planned to show how Creative Commons can be used in a range of areas. The first one was held in May and focused on the visual arts, such as painting, drawing, graphic design and sculpture. Future workshops will cover topics such as web development, photography, filmmaking, music and writing.
Perhaps the most prominent organization in Qatar currently using CC is Al Jazeera. In 2009, Al Jazeera created its “Creative Commons Repository,” where it published broadcast quality footage from the conflict in Gaza that could be used by anyone as long as it was attributed to the network. Wikipedia is a major international organization that uses Creative Commons, with the online encyclopedia being contributed to by millions of people in many languages worldwide. Users of Wikipedia can use the content from the site in their works as long as it as attributed. Other prominent organizations using CC licenses are Flickr, Google, MIT and the White House.
Creative Commons is currently operating in more than 70 countries, with Qatar among the first in the Arab world. ictQATAR, the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Creative Commons to bring an Wesolowski said that Creative Commons Qatar will affiliate to Qatar. “We really want people in Qatar to work with major organizations in Qatar like Al Jazeera experience all the benefits of the Internet and we see to share more content under CC licences, but stresses Creative Commons as a part of that equation. SPOTLIGHT ON FOOD
By the QH Team
QH has ordained 2011 the Year of the Roundup. This means we’ll be scouting out restaurants, coffee shops, cafÊs and hotels all over Doha to find the best of the best in the food and beverage industry. This month we bring the best high teas in Doha. Always the perfect way to spend an afternoon gossip session, high tea is not just for Brits anymore.
Lobby Lounge Ritz-Carlton Doha
This high-class tea offers an intimate but comfortable setting, a wide selection of teas and a number of tempting treats. Types of tea are broken down into four categories: signature, exclusive, herbal and regular. Standout teas include the exclusive celebration tea, a delightful black tea with hints of macadamia nuts and white chocolate, the signature oriental princess tea, a delicate blend of blue tea and liquorice, and the regular Gu Zhang Mao Jian tea, a subtle but poignant green tea. As for munchies, pick the tea selection most suited to your cravings. The Traditional Tea is classic afternoon tea at its best, with a selection of tea sandwiches, fresh, hot scones and delectable tea pastries. Those who like to venture out from the traditional tea offerings will love the Middle Eastern Afternoon Tea, which includes yummy hot and cold mezzeh, oriental-flavoured scones and Arabic sweets. Those who prefer something light and fresh will adore the Ladies Tea, which features tea sandwiches, scones with mascarpone cream and jam and assorted seasonal berries with fruit coulis and cream. 30 QH JUNE 2011 D copy1 copy.indd 30

Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and Spa
This classic, historical tea lounge is a paradise, with comfy sofas, lush surroundings and a harp player providing dainty background music. The servers are trained in every aspect of tea, from the correct temperature of water to use for each tea, to the correct way to pour it. The extensive tea menu is broken down into white, black, green, semi-fermented and dark teas, each listed with their proper water temperature and brewing time. Order the lovely jasmine tea and enjoy the beauty of a Chinese tea ceremony. For snacks, The Duchess tea includes a selection of tea sandwiches, pastries and fresh and delicious cranberry and orange scones with double cream, preserves and lemon curd. For something a bit more hearty, try the Prince Albert’s Terrace Tea, which includes a selection of sandwiches, quiche and tarts. The Queens Tea makes for a lovely light lunch, with tea sandwiches, tarts, croissants, danishes, and the must-try cranberry and orange scones. If you have a sweet tooth, sample the Princess Anastasia’s Sweet Sensations, which has selected sweets, scones, tarts, cakes, cookies and fresh fruits.
The T Lounge Four Seasons Doha
This modern but quaint tea lounge is full of ornate furniture, cozy corners and spacious sofas. There is one main tea service that can be ordered for one or two people and comes with tea or coffee. The bread basket comes with warm, flaky scones served with clotted cream, jam and lemon curd, honey crumpets, toasted soda bread slices, macchiato roll and sweet butter. If you are a fan of marmalade, ask for the chef’s homemade orange marmalade instead of lemon curd. The tea has an amazing sweets selection, including their incredible macaroons, a white chocolate and coconut lolly, sweet raspberry choux with plenty of filling, milk chocolate mousse, cute fruit tartlets, vanilla panna cotta with lime strawberries and a moist date cinnamon cake. For sandwiches, call dibs on the smoked turkey mini croissant and the smoked salmon tea sandwiches. The chicken and walnut dill brioche is also a delightful treat. Samples of all of the teas are available to sniff before you make your selection. The mango oolong tea is popular for a reason; not too bitter but sweet enough that you don’t need to add sugar and the smell is phenomenal. The organic Moroccan mint will please green tea fans.
The W Café W Doha
This whimsical café, inspired by Alice in Wonderful, is the perfect sunny spot to enjoy an afternoon tea with friends. For a light snack, enjoy the Cream Tea, which comes with soft, fluffy fruit scones, assorted jams and clotted cream. For those with bigger appetites, the Afternoon Tea will satisfy your every need, with delicious finger sandwiches, mini scones with exceptional strawberry jam, lemon curd and clotted cream and homemade pastries. While the yummy miniature scones are incredible, the warm, fresh finger sandwiches are a strong competitor for top billing in this tea. The turkey sandwich in particular is tangy and delicious. Munch on a sweet tart with lemon cream, a shortbread cookie or a tasty pistachio pastry while sipping on a lovely cup of Imperial Earl Grey, Pear Tree Green or Shanghai Rose Black tea. Settle into one of the adorable yellow or purple chairs and soak up the sunshine streaming through the open café while your cares melt away. If you have room, snap up a cupcake (not a part of the tea, but an essential part of any trip to the W Café). 31 QH JUNE 2011 D copy1 copy.indd 31

There’s nothing like bonding over a truly excellent meal with friends. QH reserves a table at Megu, the high-end Japanese restaurant at The Pearl-Qatar, to share a lovely meal.
I
’m excited. I have planned what is sure to be a fantastic meal at Megu with a few of my coworkers to bond over quality sushi and drool over Kobe beef. I walk into the restaurant and find I am the first of my friends to arrive. I settle onto a bar stool and check out the extensive cocktail menu while I wait for my group to arrive. The menu is full of choices, including a sake list, a bubbly list and a huge variety of vino. When we finally do get settled in at our table, we are overwhelmed by the beautiful
interior of the restaurant. From the metal Buddha to the Soju bottles used as a decorative wall, Megu is full of bits and pieces that make it not only Japanese but also uniquely Megu. My dining companions start their gastronomic journey with the Akadashi red miso soup. This aromatic soup is perfectly (slightly) sour, as it should be, with very soft, smooth tofu that melts on your tongue. The soup is comforting and familiar but absolutely exceptional. The fresh mushrooms add to the overall flavour of this amazing starter. Next up is a bevy of sushi and sashimi. I choose to go with one of the house special rolls – the salmon and avocado hand roll. The sushi is slight crunchy, with a thick coating of sesame seeds on the outside and fresh salmon and avocado on the inside. Mild and fresh, the sushi roll tantalizes my taste buds and leaves me wanting more. My dining companions start to divide and conquer the sushi and sashimi platter, which comes with five pieces of sushi, one
roll and five kinds of sashimi. The spicy tuna roll is an instant hit, with its great texture and memorable taste. The fresh, raw hammour sashimi is also popular. The platter is perfectly complemented by the soy sauce, which is not overly salty, with a slight sweetness. The sweetness compliments the rice, which is the trademark of a good sushi place, one of my friends advises. After we have devoured a substantial amount of fish, we move on to beef. The Megu Kobe beef slices “Ishiyaki” are cooked right in front of us on a hot stone. The thin slices of juicy beef sizzle before our eyes and mercifully land on our plates very quickly. The soft, succulent meat is served with wasabi and sea salt, a delightful flavour combination with the steak. The next course is a beautifully presented, slightly odd idea that has piqued my interest for months now, basically from the moment the first ad for Megu appeared at The Pearl-Qatar. The mysterious Megu original crispy asparagus, battered in Okaki, is the most intriguing vegetable I have seen in a

with parmesan French fries with white truffle oil. These warm, slightly cheesy fries are so comforting, so delicious and so far above regular fries. These fries are not at all greasy or benign; instead, they are slightly salty, with an addictive white truffle oil flavour. We balance out our fries with baby zucchini skewers from the charcoal grill. These adorable baby zucchini are grilled to perfection, with a subtle sweetness. We also scoop up some mushrooms. long time. I hesitantly bite into it, a little uncertain of what I will taste. The answer surprises me. The thick, crunchy coating is so delicious it almost feels like you’re eating fast food instead of vegetables. The rice is slightly salty and a squeeze of lemon gives the dish a slight tartness. An incredible-smelling dish of Agedashi tofu with mushrooms arrives at our table next. The tofu is light and fluffy, pleasing to the palate. Along with it comes shrimp tempura with green tea salt. The breading on the tempura is mild and crispy, not oily, and the portion is huge. The crunchy tempura is perfectly complemented by green tea salt mix. After our parade of starters, we finally move on to our main courses. We start
The main piece de resistance arrives at our table, on a gorgeous plate encased under an actual silver dome. The Wagyu Kobe beef Chateaubriand with a ginger and black sesame a la Riky sauce has a thick crust on the outside and a tender middle. The steak is amazing on its own but even better when tasted in conjunction with some of the vegetables on the side of the plate, such as the cooked pumpkin. The black sesame coating also gives the steak an incredible flavour. The chef also whips up a special plate for us, with a variety of dishes representing all the sensational tastes present on Megu’s menu. Our favourites on the platter are the mild and crunchy broccoli tempura and the exquisite Kobe beef skewers that are slightly sweet and full of flavour, with a crunchy coating of black sesame.
The best thing about Japanese food is that it’s not heavy, so even when you have a big meal you still have room for dessert. We are all excited for the beautiful desserts that await us. I order the Yuzu crème brulee, which comes in a massive bowl adorned with a decorative sugar sculpture. The base is buttery soft, smooth and creamy, with a thin, delicate crust. The single raspberry sitting atop this elegant dessert adds a quick burst of flavour to the rich treat. One of my dining companions chooses the green tea crêpe with green tea sauce. The crêpes come out piled into a perfect cake-shaped dessert. The green tea flavour is subtle but still evident in this stunning crêpe cake, especially with the added cream sauce. Another dining partner goes with the Ichigo strawberry shortcake. The cake is lovely – light and not at all crumbly. This dessert is subtly sweet and not overly rich. The final dessert on the table is the New Yorker’s cheesecake, a creamy and sweet dessert with a delicate crust. The fruit on the side of the dish adds an ideal flavour, making this velvety cheesecake a delightful treat. Afterwards, we debate going upstairs to check out Megu’s bar. But it is late and we are so full that we risk going into a food coma at any moment. We vow to check it out another time and head home knowing that we will be returning soon. 33

Italian food is hearty and often heavy in nature. So what happens when two diners decide to tackle 11 full courses of Italian deliciousness? The soft beef melts in our mouth, leaving behind an incredible lemony taste. Even without the lettuce or cheese, the beef itself is a lovely dish. Finally, around course number six, we start to get into what Italians are really known for – pasta. We dish up pappardelle al “telefono,” one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. There is a reason it has been around for more than 85 years – the homemade pappardelle with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, basil and a touch of cream is exquisite. It is light and not too creamy, with sturdy pasta designed to support the sauce. Afterwards, we continue with our pasta courses by trying the veal stuffed ravioli massaia style with fresh wild mushroom and cream sauce. The veal provides a sudden burst of flavour but the savoury cream sauce is the main attraction of the dish. There is a wonderful contrast between the sauce and the veal that will delight fans of veal.
Our next course returned us to the sea, with sautéed hammour fillet with tomato fillet, capsicum, black olives and lemon sauce. The crust of the hammour is flavourful, while the inside fish is moist and tender. The elaborate sensations of the dish, including a hint of lemon, transform this slab of fish into a wonderful main dish. We dove into another signature dish, despite our bursting bellies. The huge plate of braised veal shank ossobuco served over saffron risotto and gremolata is a hearty dish, a lot to handle after a very filling meal. The risotto was cooked well and the portion of veal was generous. Our main courses well settled in our stomachs, we decided we had enough room to have a bite or two of dessert. First, we scooped up the sweet, very creamy but mild tiramisu, topped with fruit. The fruit gives
the dessert a splash of sweetness. The dish is not too heavy but still substantial. Our next dessert, and final course, is the wonderful chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. Beautifully presented, this warm, gooey chocolate cake is soft and sinful, the perfect combination. The rich vanilla ice cream blends seamlessly into the flavour of the chocolate cake and the fruit on the side of the dish provides a nice contrast. One bread basket and 11 courses later, we come to a conclusion: Chef Nicola at Bice knows what he is doing. The food is exquisite, the plating is always pleasing to the eye and the service is wonderful. While we might not always be up for such a massive feast, we will always make room for delightful Italian fare. 35

T
he Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and Spa, one of the newest hotels in Qatar, seems more like a palace than a place to rent a room for the weekend. The grand exterior, elegant interiors and traditional vibe all add up to make the hotel, located within Aspire Park, a place befitting a king or queen. It only makes sense that the food is also up to royal standards. Fortunately, the atmosphere inside of Blue, one of the hotel’s most stunning outlets, is anything but stuffy. Inside the sunny restaurant, guests will find a top-notch menu offering delicious fare from sushi to steak, an extensive water list and a friendly staff. The restaurant’s balcony overlooks the grounds of Aspire Park, making it easy to imagine that a runner might pop in for a bite to eat after an afternoon jog. A chalk board listing the daily specials hangs on the brick wall next to show kitchen. A team of energetic chefs are frantically working to prepare fresh, tantalizing dishes for their lunch crowd.
We start our casual afternoon lunch with a round of homemade iced tea with lemon and mint. The
restaurant doesn’t serve alcoholic beverages but compensates by providing a large variety of waters (the stats of each type of water is listed right on the menu) and a nice selection of smoothies, mocktails and soft drinks. The iced tea is ideal for a hot summer afternoon; the crisp, tangy and refreshing taste almost makes us forget the rising temperature outside. The menu is full of so many tempting dishes that it’s tough to pick which delectable bites to choose. We start with a small sushi plate (salmon, tuna, snapper and sea bass), a royal California roll (Alaskan King crab, cucumber, avocado, spicy mayonnaise, wasabi, tobiko and seasoned Japanese rice) and a black widow roll (tempura fried soft shell blue crab, black bean sauce, tomago, cucumber, avocado, tobiko and miso mayonnaise). The made-to-order sushi is incredible; fresh, with a nice flavour but not overwhelmingly fishy. We also dig into the Mediterranean spiced tuna tartar, a light and slightly sweet dish made of lightly spiced tuna tartare, topped with marinated cucumber, tomato leather, cherry tomatoes, black olives, raisins,

decide to divide and conquer the dessert section anyways. We order a selection of desserts to fulfill our sugar quota for the day. The white chocolate semi fredo is a partially frozen cake that comes with orange zest puree, green tea, lemon sponge and caramelized strawberries. This intriguing dessert is light, like an airy, fluffy ice cream cake. The green tea flavour is lovely and the cake isn’t too sweet. The pandan and lemongrass crème brulee topped with exotic fruit presents an interesting addition to the crème brulee scene in Qatar. The creamy green mixture has a thick caramelized crust on top to give it a brush of sweetness. Lighter than most crème brulees, this is a good pick for those who find traditional crème brulee too saccharine. Those with a sweet tooth will fall head over heels for the chocolate cherry gateau with berry sorbet. This moist cake is delicious and oh-so-sweet that our dentists would surely frown if they knew we consumed a whole piece. But the cake, complemented nicely by the berry sorbet, is so incredible that it is completely worth the sugar rush we experience after our relaxing lunch ends. 37

There are many ways to kill stress, but a good scrub and mud wrap treatment in a state-of-the-art spa is probably the best way to forget about any problems you may have in your life. Plus, you will walk out looking healthier and feeling lighter. QH tells you where you can scrub your stress away!
I
have come to the conclusion that Qatar is a country with many great spas. In the past few months, I have visited a lot of different facilities and I haven’t had a single disappointing experience. This month, I had the pleasure of reviewing the spa treatments available for men at the Bodylines: Leisure & Fitness Club, located in Oryx Rotana Doha. And, as expected, the experience was incredible. There is something very particular about the way the staff makes you feel once you step foot into the fitness centre that gives you the impression you are the most important person in the entire area. The cordiality and genuine hospitality of every single member of the staff working at the spa is surprisingly comfortable.
The alluringly modern design of each corner of the men’s section of the fitness club is simply exquisite. It is the perfect stress-free environment that can
only inspire tranquility. The combination of the architecture and warm hospitality makes each visit a one-of-a-kind experience. My appointment was booked for 11:00 a.m. and at that exact time Frederick, my spa therapist, was already waiting for me. Before proceeding to the massage room, Frederick explained in detail what my treatment would be like. His professionalism was evident right away with every word he pronounced and in the way he explained every step of the treatment that consisted of a body scrub, sea mud wrap and light massage. Once inside the room, I was offered two different kinds of scrubs. I was told the quality and benefits of each treatment. I decided to go with the one that would exfoliate my pores more deeply. My choice was the perfect one. The microfoliant scrub used on my body

was colloidal oatmeal and tapioca-based powder, enriched with rice bran powder, papain and salicylic acid. Before starting with my body scrub, I couldn’t help but notice the simplicity of the room. It was not a lavish set up, but it had all the right elements to make one feel totally relaxed. When I laid down on the table and put my face in the hole, I noticed a very cool detail that I hadn’t seen in any other spa. There was a bowl on the floor filled with red rose petals swimming in water. As corny and anti-masculine as it may sound, looking at the rose petals gives you an extraordinary feeling of serenity and inner peace. It is a very nice touch that refreshes your mind and soul. The set up of the room, the roses and the soft music tunes recreates the right atmosphere to just let yourself go and enjoy a refine spa session.

Frederick gently placed the scrub on my I have had sea mud wraps before, but body starting with my feet and going up the last time I got one it was kind of through my legs and arms and ending up uncomfortable. THE FINAL STEP After my body scrub, my sea mud wrap, several head massages and two nice showers, I felt extremely relaxed. I didn’t really want to leave and happily there was still more to come. My very pleasurable treatment ended with a 15-minute medium pressure body massage, during which a cream was applied to my body to further enhance the effect of the scrub and the mud. Overall, my experience was perfect and this type of treatment really helps take your stress away, plus you walk out of the room looking good and feeling vigorous.

Relaxation is the key to maintaining good mental health and is also a main component of being physically healthy. When we spend most of our time stressed out to the max, with tense, hunched shoulders, it starts to affect our appearance, mood and health. One of the easiest ways to relax? Let a professional handle it.
A
t least once a month, I hit the point where my shoulders are so hunched they are aligned with my ears, my back aches like a logger took a swipe at me with an axe and my neck is so tight I would almost rather rip it off from my body than spend one more minute with it attached to my head and shoulders. Every time I get to that moment where my body doesn’t feel like my own anymore, I do something very simple. I get a massage. But, as I have learned over the years, all massages are not created equal. Some are good for a hardcore stretch and pain relief, while others are designed to help you relax to the maximum.
Bodylines: Leisure & Fitness Club, located in Oryx Rotana Doha, is centred on relaxation. Little touches, like the lily left near the headrest of the massage table, comfort my senses and add to my levels of relaxation. The music is dim enough that I hardly notice it but loud enough to block out any noise
from the surrounding world, an essential part of any good massage. The massage therapist takes it slow, one body part at a time. After all, she’s not here to beat my muscles into submission; she is here to help my muscles sink into a deep state of relaxation. She liberally slathers oil onto my right foot and works her magic, before turning her attention to my left foot. The massage technician works gently and methodically, taking her time to soothe each aching muscle and sore ligament. She uses light pressure, causing every muscle in my body to slowly but surely unwind from their heightened state of tight anxiety. After an hour on the table, my heartbeat has slowed down, my muscles feel looser and my headache is gone. The only downside is that I am literally soaked in oil. To help the oil sink into my skin and further moisturize my body, my massage therapist suggests I head for the spa’s steam room or sauna. When I protest that I must get back to
work, she politely encourages me to spend just five minutes in the spa’s tranquil steam room. I head into the steam room and almost immediately sink into an even deeper state of relaxation. Using the steam room or sauna after any massage treatment is an essential part of the relaxation process not only because it helps the moisture in the oil penetrate your skin deeper but also because it allows you time to breathe deeply, unwind and de-clutter your brain. I begin to sweat immediately, but remind myself that all the steam is opening up my pores, allowing moisture to come in and bad toxins to come out. After only a few minutes in the steam room, I emerge a calmer, more serene version of myself.

Collect as many safety pins as you can find and pin them along the edges of a plain black suit jacket’s breast pocket to give it a kick of rock and roll. Take a bunch of silver nuts and string an old shoelace through them for a punky bracelet. Pound an old, unused key with a hammer to deconstruct it into a vintage charm necklace. If you wander enough around fashion blogs and designer websites, you’ll notice that these hints of grunge and steampunk-inspired accessories are a definite plus in style and a great opportunity to get you all crafty and preoccupied.

Here are some tips and tricks to get you started on battling boredom and refreshing your wardrobe this season!
Shear Delight.
Imperfect, raw edges are all the rage in fashion these days, but lot of times we hesitate cutting away for fear of ruining a decent shirt or a pair of jeans. The trick to cutting fabric is to cut slowly and continuously; stopping halfway through leaves you with those annoying snags and uneven edges. Start by marking the fabric lightly with the pencil, take a deep breath and cut away!

I’m a Free Bleach, Baby.
Nothing says cool summer grunge like an epic pair of deconstructed bleached denims, or a nice bleached shirt. Rummage through the nether regions of your closet and experiment: dip an old toothbrush in full strength bleach for fine splatters or spray blobs and splats of an equal parts bleach and water mixture onto clothes with a spray bottle. If you’re feeling edgy, go ahead and fill a pail of water with bleach and water mixture and dunk your jeans in halfway through for a twotoned bleached pair. Just remember to wear proper protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area when bleaching; it is a very strong chemical and can harm you (and your jeans, if you don’t rinse it off properly). These are just some ideas to get you inspired on your own personal adventure of conquering boredom and upping your style score this sunny season. All you need to remember is that there really are no rules to DIY fashion: just learn to look at things differently, don’t be afraid to get dirty and make mistakes, and you’ll definitely be on the right track, baby!

The summer is already upon us and the temperature is definitely heating up. There are lots of people in Doha who enjoys a good swim, but for some, the idea of heading to the beach in this weather is probably not ideal. However, that is not a reason to stay at home. There is plenty of swimming that can be done in an indoor pool.
A
part from being perhaps the only sport that works out every single muscle of your body in perfect balance, swimming is also an incredibly pleasant recreational activity. The relaxation, sense of freedom and quiet one can get while inside a pool is definitely a sensation to look forward to. The enjoyment of swimming is endless. Doha has beautiful beaches and plenty of luxurious hotels that house nicely designed swimming pools. However, if, apart from having a good time, you want to use swimming as a vehicle to improve the shape of your body, or to compete on an amateur or professional level, beach or hotel facilities won’t provide you with the right environment. But luckily for residents who want to take the sport to a new level, there is a place in the middle of Doha that offers personalized training and the proper space to develop or further improve your swimming skills.

Hans Bylemans is the man behind the concept of Qmotion. He is a former professional swimmer from Belgium with an extensive background in the sport. He has participated in many high-profile international competitions through his career as a swimmer, including the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. After his career ended, Bylemans went into the private industry, where he became a successful professional. His story in Qatar began at the Asian Games, where he played a key role in the organization of all the aquatics sports. After the games came to an end, Bylemans went onto work on different projects, but his first passion was still very much alive in his heart. That’s when he decided that it was time to revive his long affair with swimming and he opened Qmotion. “Swimming has always been my passion and to be involved in the club, it just came natural to me, as I have been swimming for more than 20 years,” Bylemans said. “Teaching someone to swim is like saving someone’s life. Drowning is one of the top causes of death in the world; therefore, I take pride in the fact that by teaching people how to swim I may be also saving someone’s life. ”

Marcos Gutierrez is a proud fan of the Barcelona Football Club. For more than a year he has tried to officially establish a FC Barcelona Fan Club here in Doha to pay tribute to the club that he so deeply admires. Finally, after months of arduous paper work, his dream has materialized and the FC Barcelona Doha Fan Club – Qatar is a happy reality.
F
amiliarly known as Barca, the club is the second-most successful in Spanish football, with more than a hundred years of history. The club has won 21 La Liga titles, 25 Spanish Cups, nine Spanish Super Cups, and two League titles. Given such a successful trajectory, it is no surprise that the club has millions of fans in each corner of the globe. The club’s devoted fans follow their every move and religiously watch each game Barca plays. But to be a member of an official FC Barcelona club it is not an easy task, as establishing the fan club in a country outside of Spain requires of a lot of effort, plus approval from the club itself. Marcos Gutierrez was not intimidated by all the hard work and, together with other six Barca fans, he has accomplished a great victory.
"We are very happy we were able to establish the fan club here in Qatar," Gutierrez said. "The aim of our fan club is
to gather all fans in the country who really loves FC Barcelona and to spread with pride our passion for the colours and the philosophy of our club." The fan club is a non-lucrative organization registered and approved by the FC Barcelona directly, said Gutierrez. "Our intention is to share our passion by organizing events and football matches, watching games together, doing events for the kids and doing joint events with other fan club's like Dubai's, among other activities we are preparing," Gutierrez said. On May 6, Marcos received the good news that the permission to officially open a FC Barcelona Fan Club in Qatar was granted. Since then, all of Barca’s fans have a space to share their passion for the same team. They have been gathering at Admirals Club at Ritz-Carlton Doha to celebrate the victories of their beloved football club. In the short period of time that the fan club
has been functional, more than a hundred other aficionados has joined Gutierrez. Together, they proudly embrace the colours of FC Barcelona. The FC Barcelona Doha Fan Club – Qatar has one very special member. Gabriel Garcia, also known as Gabri, is a former FC Barcelona player who is currently playing for a prestigious football team in Qatar. He was pleasantly surprised to find out about the good news and shared his take on the newly founded fan club with us.

QH: When you heard that there was a FC Barcelona Fan Club in Qatar, what was your first impression?
Photos provided by FC Barcelona Doha Fan Club
GG: I played for the FC Barcelona for more than 12 years. I started as a junior and then moved up to the first league. I felt very good when I heard about the fan club. I know how hard is to get the permission to set up a fan club outside Spain, so I was very pleased to hear that there is one in the country that I am currently living in and that is so far away from home. It is a great way for all the aficionados and myself to feel like the club is closer. QH: As a former player of the club, what does it mean to you the establishment of the club here in Qatar? GG: Football is becoming more and more popular every day. This is a huge step for all Barca fans. It is our opportunity to show the world how much passion we have for the sport and our club. We have fans clubs in many countries all over the world and having one in Qatar is quite an accomplishment. I admire Marcos’ efforts to make this a reality.
QH: What will be your involvement in the FC Barcelona Doha Fan Club – Qatar? GG: I will help promote the fan club as much as I can and help all members in whatever way possible. I played for the club for so many years and I have a deep connection with FC Barcelona. For me, it is a special honour to keep supporting the club from here. I still have contact with some of the players, so imagine how happy I am to be able to still support them. QH: What is your dearest memory of playing for FC Barcelona? GG: When we won the championship league in 2006 because before that year we hadn’t won in a while. QH: You are playing now for Um Salal. Tell us about this new challenge in your career. GG: It’s been very gratifying. I have been playing for them for a year now and it has been great. I think I can give a lot to the team because of my experience playing for so many European teams.
QH: How did you end up in this part of the world? GG: I have worked with the coach that brought me here for many years. We first met while I was still playing for Barcelona and then we also worked together when I was playing for Ajax Amsterdam. When my contract finished he talked to me about the possibility to come and play here, as he was already coaching my current team. I wanted a change and I saw this opportunity as the perfect gateway to start a new chapter in my career. QH: Is there anything else you would like to say to the members of the FC Barcelona Doha Fan Club – Qatar? GG: A lot of effort has been put into this project; therefore I just hope all fans will enjoy being part of something special. 63

Pool can’t be considered a very popular game in the country just yet. But that situation may rapidly change, as the Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation (QBSF) is paving the way for the sport to become well-known by bringing the biggest stars of the game to Doha and organizing international championships.
F
or the second year in a row, Qatar will play host to one of the most recognized pool tournaments in the world. QH gives you all the details on this international pool affair.
The WPA World 9-Ball Championship is an annual pool tournament that gathers the best professional pool players from around to world to compete against each other. The first edition took place in 1990, in Bergheim, Germany, and was won by American Earl Strickland. Since then, the event has taken place in many places, including the U.S., Taiwan, Sweden, Spain and the Philippines. In 2008, the tournament went through a two-year hiatus before making its triumph return in Qatar in 2010. The WPA World 9-Ball Championship was first brought to the Middle East in 2010. That year, Qatar became the first Arab country to ever stage a pool championship of this calibre. Qatar will host the event until 2013. “The WPA World 9-Ball Championship has never taken place in the Middle East before, until we brought it here. For us,
is a great honour that Qatar was selected to host the championship for four consecutive editions. We are very happy that we were given this chance,” said Ehab Alsalih, Technical expert of the Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation. “By hosting such a big event, we know we are on the right track to increase furthermore the popularity of pool in Qatar.” Last year, spectators saw Francisco Bustamante from the Philippines beat all of his opponents to claim the coveted title. June 21 to July 2, the top 128 pool players from all around the globe will land in Qatar to participate in the World 9-Ball Championship Qatar 2011 with a prize money of USD 250,000. The top players gathering in the country for the competition includes current champion Francisco Bustamante, Efran Reyes and Denis Orcollos, among many others. The qualifying stage will take place from June 21 until June 24. The second stage will take place starting June 25 until July 2 at Al Saad Sports Club.

The players will play on a nine foot table, whose design originated in the U.S. Players have to pocket the balls in sequence one to nine. The player that pockets ball number nine will be the winner. Any player that loses two games will be out of the competition.
Ali Al Obaidly is the top junior and senior pool player in the country. He won the Qatar National Open 8-ball and brought home a gold medal after claiming the title at the Arab Championship. He is also a three-time silver medalist of the GCC championship. QH met with the prodigious teenager to discuss further the upcoming World 9-Ball Championship Qatar 2011 and his take on the sport in Qatar. QH: How long have you been playing pool and what inspired you to do so? Al Obaidly: I started playing pool and snooker when I was nine years old. I am 18 years now, so you can do the math. My father was one of the founders of the Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation, so his passion for the sport was big. I got my love for pool and snooker from him. I always saw him playing and eventually I just got very much involved with the game. QH: Tell us about your expectations for the upcoming World 9-Ball Championship Qatar 2011. Al Obaidly: There are eight players from the national team participating in the event. I just hope that at least three of us can make it to the top 32 and, of course, hopefully one of us will win. The best players in the world are coming to participate, so it is kind of a difficult competition. I am confident we are ready and that we will give our very best. Also, I want my
compatriots to know more about the game and maybe get inspired and join the federation or the national team. We need more players to join us, especially to play snooker. Many people find snooker very difficult and do not want to play it. QH: Why is it so important to host international events such as this one? Al Obaidly: It is very important because it will raise the status of the sport in the country to a higher level. A lot of people come to watch the event, which is great. We just need more Qataris to fall in love with the game and become more involved. QH: How far do you want to go as a pool and snooker player? Al Obaidly: As far as I can go. I love the game. My family is very supportive and I practice all the time. I feel very lucky that I can play both and that I am good at it. I am also very proud that I have gone this far.
