The world acknowledges International Women’s Month and Qatar, amongst other cultures, celebrates Mother’s day in March. While it takes all kinds of women to make the world go round, Mothers are universally the most important women to touch our lives. One mum, Hillary Rodham Clinton, told QH “It’s not so much about what one looks like as what’s in one’s mind and one’s heart and the kind of person one becomes.” While traditionally it’s the mum’s of the world behind tomorrow’s world leaders enabling education and values, women’s aspirations go well beyond their domestic responsibilities for some. This month our QH SENSATIONS LOOK catches a glimpse of women living in Qatar with grand aspirations of their own. Education is a key factor in breaking barriers in every culture and it’s not always only about books and classrooms. It takes more to develop the best of what you can become and hence, we chose to highlight the photography competition being organized as part of this month’s Human Rights Youth Conference. Doha: Capital of Arab Culture 2010 has been a great success and Qatar National Theatre has blossomed into a cultural hotspot. The World Indoor Championships grace our soil this month as well at the spectacular Aspire Dome. March has one of the most diverse and interesting lineups we have seen in a very long time. Don’t miss out. Be part of it!

Eeny, meeny, miney, random: here’s our collection of things tickling us technicolour this month! Video missed this Radio star

Avatarlicious

Beyond his outstanding name, Jian Ghomeshi has won our hearts with his pure, unadulterated awesomeness to the power of 12. Currently the Walter-Cronkite-tongued host of Q, one of the most popular cultural affairs programs on CBC radio, he’s also been a member of the multi-platinum folk-rock band Moxy Fruvous. And he’s tangoed with Billy Bob Thorton and made him look the kid wearing the helmet and looking forward to the day he’s allowed to use safety scissors. Did we mention he’s also soothing our panic at the imminent death of both the media and collective intelligence with his smart, insightful and scathing commentary? Check him out on Facebook or at www.cbc.ca/q for streaming video of his shows.

Ok, yes, we realize this movie is ridiculous. Not to mention the illegitimate love child of Fern Gully and Dances with Wolves that they kept in the basement where it learned the gentle ways of the Smurfs and possibly the Fraggles. But we still sort of love it. James Cameron knows how to do a good blockbuster that most people will claim fervently they didn’t see seven times in about a year (hello Titanic). The 3D effects are perfectly done- subtle, but still double plus cool. Well done Mr. Cameron, we see you’ve finally learned the definition of the word ‘overkill’. Now if only your word-of-the-day calendar includes the word ‘plagiarism’ we’re all set.

Sweet, Sweet Suppressed Rage Leave it to the Internet to make us giggle and boil with anger all at the same time. The good folks over at www.passiveaggressivenotes.com manage to correctly define ‘passive aggressive’ (thus making us call off our grammar flying monkeys). Schadenfreude away, enjoy the battles for office microwaves, the missives over parking, and the mother-load of passive aggression: roommate notes angrily declaring that yes, they lick their cheese to thwart cheese thieves. Although not mice. Mice really don’t care if you’ve licked your cheese. Why yell when you can say it with barely disguised rage and sarcasm? Check it out at www.passiveaggressivenotes.com

To sleep, perchance to chow

A Little Bit Country Throughout the magical mystery tour that’s the soundtracking of our office, occasionally something of the country western oeuvre escapes our speakers. And there’s nothing like Jo Dee Messina to kick the dust off the hypothetical gophers that leap from desk to desk and get us up and going in the morning! It’s a bit as if feel-good pop took a little trip to the set of ‘Deliverance’, but without the horrible, horrible banjos. Jo De Messina is available on Itunes.

Beds are universally known to be awesome. What better way to catapult your sleeping arrangements to ridiculous heights of magnificence than by literally sleeping in a cheeseburger? Constructed on a round bed frame out of meticulous levels of attention-to-condiment details (check out the sesame seeds and picklepillow) this is a snuggly way to say ‘why yes, I CAN has cheeseburger.’ Check out the Hamburger Bed on Facebook.

Want in on our super cool awesomeness? Check us out at www.qatarhappening.com or add us on Facebook or Twitter (we’re like the new Facebook only... not annoying and10completely superfluous). MAR 2010D.indd 10

Toting Charity Vroom Vroom Volvo is back, this time with the Volvo C70, its latest effort in sleek topless glory. It’s the grown-up version of the Barbie dream car. It comes as both a hardtop coupe, and a wide-open convertible: perfect for balmy Doha evenings. Plus, it’s got Volvo’s safety record behind it, which makes it perfect for Doha’s aggressive traffic. Which you will be stopping when you put the top down.

Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with Mango to bring you an exclusive handbag, with all profits going to Intermon-Oxfam to help raise funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The print on the bag represents the ancient cartography of Haiti, and contains the message ‘supporting the people of Haiti’, as well as Scarlett’s signature. Each bag retails fro QR 79, available only at Mango.

Plum Love M.A.C. is back and ready for spring with their berry infused collection, sparkling with purples and plums. Lighter than winter’s matte reds, it’s a fresh choice for those who like a dramatic pout. Best of all, they blend right in with last season’s browns and tans for a dramatic effect great for all skin tones. Ditch the blacks and smoke out your eyes with purple for a soft, fun look. Extra points for blue-eyed girls – purple makes their peepers pop, especially when combined with brown! Favs include the Eye Shadow X4, a compact with the full spectrum of purple colours already selected for you, and their Lipglass for a subtle shiny take on the trend.

The Power of a Book THE One brings you ‘The Power of the Invisible Sun’, Bobby Sager’s coffee table book featuring images taken over eight years of encounters with children in war-torn areas all over the world. The photos depict refugees, orphans, and child soldiers but above all children trying to have a childhood. So powerful they were used by Sting during his Invisible Sun performances, the book also includes a forward by the musician. However, the best part is all proceeds go towards the Hope is A Game-Changer Project, that distributes indestructible soccer balls to disadvantaged children. Pick yours up at THE One.

Oscar season is upon us, and once again, the Academy seems to have gone collectively insane, at least when it comes to music. So we bring you our Top 5 Oscar noms who should have added a soundtrack to their credit; two movies who inexplicably (or splicably) have rocking soundtracks, but no Oscar nods; and one that will cause your iPod to spontaneous burst into horrified flames if you ever attempt to listen to it.

The Blindside ing tissue grabber of the This movie is our heart-warm nt. ased soundtrack is no differe year, and the as-yet-unrele so but it, to l fee m ulu rcial pab Sure, it has a slight comme m-to-country arch, this one rea inst ma a like you If what? are been released yet, but we will do it for you. District 9 This is a depressing movie. They crammed as many hor rible human events as possible into one film, slapped some aliens on it to give us the appropriate distance (oth erwise half the people who saw it would have done a U-turn at the tick et booth), and generally suc ceeded in making us feel bad about being human. And their sou ndtrack rocked. The official soundtrac k is a haunting blend of Afr ican rap and Enya-esque melodies. But what we’re really gratefu l for is their introduction to Kwaito- pos t Apartheid hip hop with soc ial commentary undertones that’s got a cer tain Reggeton quality to it. New to our iTunes rotation: Zingu 7, Bon ginkosi Siamini, and Zulu Mo bb.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon We know. We’re shocked too. Generally adamantly antiTwilight (Team Edward? Team Jacob? Who cares- vampires don’t sparkle and werewolves don’t mope. And sometimes wear shirts), this one is just fun. With a certain glossed-up Indie flair, it’s got tracks from Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers and Ok Go to name a few. All we’ve got to say is we hope you were paid well guys – the best part of this moviebook megalith may just be the associated tunage.

Up in the Air Like the movie, the sou ndtrack is a trip down dep ression-but-ohwait-here’s-the upliftingkicker lane. This is what happens when Emo grows up, gets a job , cuts it’s hair and gets awesome. ‘Angel in the Snow’ introduced us to one of our latest obs essions, Elliott Smith, and ‘Help Yours elf’ underlines why Sad Brad Smith really needs to cheer up, becaus e we heart him. Where the Wild Things Are It’s a wild rumpus in our CD player! If you loved Juno’s soundtrack, you’ll adore this one: it’s a mellow and melodic mix of folksy rhythms, deep lyrics, and functions as much like an adult lullaby as the book did when we were kids. ‘All is Love’ by Karen O is particularly stunning.

Look away from James Cameron’s hypno-stare and say it with us: Celine Dion wasn’t a good idea the first time. ‘My Heart Will Go On’ may have fooled us back in 1997, Cameron, but you won’t get away with it again this time! Don’t try slipping that Leona Lewis woman past us, we’re not buying it. This soundtrack, like the movie, is the cinematic equivalent of a mother bird feeding her young – pure regurgitation. Just cut out the middleman and buy Disney’s ‘Pocahontas’ soundtrack instead. 15

VIRGIN RECOMMENDS

Here’s how you can find out what’s hot: QH brings you the top selections from Virgin Megastore this month. And watch for the QH heart in stores!

I Dreamed A Dream, Susan Boyle Singing sensation Susan Boyle is definitely no longer a one-hit wonder with her debut album. The musical stylings of Boyle render songs into beautiful melodic masterpieces that show off her skill and style, clearly untouched by gimmicks.

Fame Monster, Lady Gaga And the Lady is back! Bigger, better and definitely Gaga-er. Even though there are only eight tracks, these musical critters will be gnawing on your minds with fantastic LSS (Last Song Syndrome) tactics to the point that you’ll be humming and nodding your head in no time.

Crazy Love, Michael Bublé Echo, Leona Lewis British vocalist Lewis has releases her follow-up to the smash hit album ‘Spirit’. There’s definitely something experimental going on with different sounds and beats used. Overall, as you listen through the album, you’ll get to appreciate that that no track sounds like the other, from ballad to dance music. And we’ll forgive her for participating in the cluster-bomb that was ‘Avatar’.

Bublé is ready to set your ears swinging and hearts aflutter. With two original and 11 covers from various eras that show off his personality and flair, you in for a melodic treat from the traditional pop crooner. Trust the multigrammy winning artist to simply wow your senses with songs such as ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’, ‘Cry Me A River’ and ‘‘You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You’.

Rated R, Rihanna Unlike her previous releases, tracks in this album have a far more realistic and authentic feeling through the mix of heavy techno beats, crunchy synths and simmering industrial arrangements. Clearly, the quality of music from Rihanna has matured to the point that her music has become a platform for emotional expression.

Famous Photos Dorothea Lange’s photo, A Mother and Seven Children from 1936 highhigh lighted the real impact of the Great Depression in the United States.

Why Human Rights?

Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl portrait graced the cover of National Geographic in 1985, and turned the world’s attention to the Afghan conflict and the plight of refugees worldwide.

In a recent survey of students in Qatar, more than a third didn’t have any knowledge of human rights. Human Rights are the basic rights and freedoms all humans are entitled to, just for existing, regardless of gender or nationality. It is a universal bar, put in place by the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and reinforced by other more specific declarations, creating a minimal standard of human dignity and justice which most countries around the world have adopted. It’s the basis for many countries laws and serves as a guidepost to identify corruption and injustice.

The image of Dolores Huerta holding her ‘heulga’ (strike) sign drew world attention to issues around labour and migrant workers.

Some common rights and freedoms now thought of as human rights include: • Civil and political rights • Equality before the law • Economic, social and cultural rights • The right to be treated with dignity and respect • The right to food • The right to work • The right to education • Freedom of expression

period in the history of colonial India at the end of the 18th/beginning of the 19th centuries, when ideas of the enlightenment brought about a quest to discover the geography, natural habitat, history, cultures and architecture of the Indian Subcontinent through a discourse between the scholarly elites of both British colonialists and their Indian subjects. SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY

WHAT IS IT? Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, it’s a global movement to raise awareness and action on climate change. It started in Australia in 2007, when around 2 million residents of Sydney turned off their lights for one hour. By 2009, over 4000 cities in 88 countries were switching off. Major landmarks all over the world, from the CN Tower in Toronto to the Rome’s Colosseum, doused their lights in support.

Switch off Doha! Earth Hour starts at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27th. Turn off your lights, unplug your phone, switch off the washing machine and flip off the internet- take one hour to make a difference! We dare you.

Beware Carbon Offsetting Carbon Offsetting is not the Brawny paper towel of the climate change industry (which, by the way, is big business). It sounds good on the surface- companies promise to plant a tree, etc, to ‘make up’ for the carbon released from their products. But the trees are usually planted in developing countries, taking away from needed agricultural land. What’s more, they often aren’t maintained, or involve large-scale pesticide use. Not to mention the amount of carbon released when the groves are cleared and planted. Take action yourself, don’t rely on corporate promises to do it for you!

Why turn out your lig hts? New economic modeling indicates we’ve got just five years to chan ge and reduce our carbon foo tprint before climate change becomes inevitable. In 2007, it’s estimate d that the electricity used in Sydney during the ho ur was 2 per cent lower than usual– which might seem trivial, bu t if that figure could be maintained all year long, it’s the equivalent of Global warming is happening, and if we don’t take action in the next taking 48, 616 cars off the five years, it’s going to happen in our lifetimes. Carbon was previously locked in underground rock layers, but unnecessary consum our use of coal, oil, and natural gas has unlocked it and released ption habits, and the need it into the atmosphere. It’s estimated this has increased the for change. atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide by a third since 1750and some 60 per cent of that increase has happened since 1959.

So what will this do? Ice caps will melt and the sea level will rise as the earth heats up. Powerful currents like the Gulf Stream, necessary for the ecosystems of countries around the globe, will shift and change, or disappear completely. Extreme weather events like hurricanes and tsunamis will become more common, feeding on the warmer oceans. Plants and animals will die off and deserts will spread across the world- the parts of it that are still above sea level, that is. And all this within our lifetimes (some estimates are as soon as within 30 years) if we don’t make changes now.

Other Ways To Help You don’t have to be Captain Planet to make a difference – it’s sometimes as simple as flicking a switch.

Turn out lights completely when you’re not in the room. Dimmers still use electricity; so if you’re not in the space, turn them off completely! This goes for businesses and schools too – many buildings leave their lights on all night long. Speak with management if your company is one of them!

Buy Less. We’re not just releasing carbon from our gas tanks. Modern fabrics, plastic packaging, and the fuel needed to import the product and then dispose of it all increase the burden. Instead of shopping for new things, why not host a Stuff Swap with your friends, where everyone brings items to trade? And when you do buy, try to select Carpool or use public transit. Why take four cars, items with less packaging, and bring your own bag – when you can fit all your passengers in one? passing on the provided plastic makes a big impact.

Turn off the AC. Why leave it on all day? The room can be cooled just as well when you return home and switch it on than if you leave it sucking energy all day. Let your clothes air dry. For that matter, try washing your clothes in cold water: it saves energy, and it’s actually better for many fabrics!

Get organized! Identify who’s making the biggest impact in your own community, and get together with your friends and family to change it! Never doubt the power of small group of individuals to change the world – especially if they come with loudspeakers and ironic signs.

QH finds out what was on Hillary Clinton’s mind when she visited Qatar recently and addressed a packed house at Education City.

illary Clinton has been in the spotlight for decades, first as First Lady of the United States, then as a senator, and most recently as Secretary of State. But while commanding attention and respect, she’s also braved criticism alternatively for being too hard or too soft, and encapsulated the challenge of women in the post-feminist era: how to find balance. While she’s not revealing how she does it for herself, she’s not shy on how she does it for a nation. 27 MAR 2010D.indd 27

I believe that there are certain basic rights that every woman and girl should have,” she said. “The education that you are receiving here is absolutely critical, because you will then have more opportunities. It’s not so much about what one (looks like) as what is in one’s mind and one’s heart, and the kind of person one becomes. And I think that should be the emphasis as to how we look at girls and women’s lives around the world.” While she addressed an open forum of students and dignitaries at Education City

“Clearly, the raw diversity of the Islamic world is something that Americans are learning more about, and recognizing to a greater degree,” she said. “We want to have the kind of conversation we are having today. We will not agree on everything. I don’t know any family that agrees on everything, let alone countries that have differences in experience and cultural views and the like. But we believe it is very important to have this kind of dialogue.” To that end, she says the United States is investing heavily in creating opportunities for students to come to the United States to study, and sending American professors, business leaders, and media personalities

abroad, a reversal of the post-9/11 culture that saw the United States make a sharp left turn back towards the isolationism they’d embraced until the 1940’s. “That is the kind of dialogue that we think will help to move us beyond this very narrow focus that we, unfortunately, see too much of in the past,” she said.” She says they’ve already seen these policies start to make a difference, in places where only a few years ago it would have seemed impossible. And it all springs from education. “That’s why what Education City represents is so important, not only in Qatar, not only in this region, but far beyond,” she said. “(It) sends a strong message to the entire world. It’s a sign- along with many posts like hers being held by women across the globe- that the world is changing. “This is not the Cold War. It’s not like it was 40 years ago,” she said. “When you look around the world, there are so many challenges that the balance is not the hard part. It’s trying to figure out what we can constructively do, how we can bring people together, how we can work with others to end suffering. It is a very long list. But I think you have to keep your heart open, and you have to keep your mind alert to try to find opportunities to help wherever you can.”

Dozens of gorillas were often killed in order to bring one or two to zoos, and she watched gorillas she’d formed friendships with die for the $20 their corpses would bring. La Dolce Vita More like La Dolce Delicious. This tiny gelato spot tucked behind the main restaurant drag in Souq Waqif is a tasty find and one of our new favourite spots. Seriously, best ice-cream-like-item we have ever had! Not much from the outside, the true genius lurks within their refrigerator case: all the gelato is made on site, using fresh ingredients (many imported from Italy). And it shows: the different flavours, both traditional and experimental, jump up and do a little happy dance on the tongue. Ask for Giovanni, who makes all the gelato and will help you select your new favourite treat. Al Mourjan This one’s an icon, with quite possibly the best view in Doha. If you have guests in the city, you have to go here- with traditional Lebanese cuisine, it’s a step up in taste (and price, but it’s worth it!) from the many mezza spots in Doha. The only restaurant on the Corniche, their patio literally arches into the bay, with steps lapped by the tide. Ask for the ‘baby mezza’– mini portions of some of their most popular hot and cold mezza items, perfect for sharing and introducing you and your guests to Lebanese cuisine.

Nestled next to high fashion and stunning views of the water and the city, Bert’s is one of The Pearl-Qatar’s latest and tastiest editions. With huge umbrellas and a vast menu, including toasted sandwiches, clubs, wraps, salads and quiches, it’s a nice stop with a touch of class. The food is light, and not overworked – everything is in the right tasty proportion. Best of all it’s a healthy alternative – the menu is spiked with items marked by a nutritionist as good choices. It’s a good spot to linger over your food, enjoying the great view of West Bay.

This time, come for lunch and check out their salads and sandwiches – quite possibly the best on The Pearl-Qatar. They’re light, they’re delicious, and they just feel so healthy and good for you you’re inevitably willing to justify that peanut butter cookie at the end. Their outside patio overlooks the water, and is tucked down at the end of the Porto Arabia, so it’s a quiet, relaxed place to indulge.

Scandar Copti made headlines for his work with the Doha Tribeca Film Festival and the One-Minute film workshops here in Qatar. But he and his first film are Oscar-bound and QH catches up with him before he hits the red carpet.

S

candar Copti isn’t going to shell out money for a new tux for the Oscars.

“I’m going to wear my wedding suit,” he said. “But it’s a nice one!”

So’s his film, ‘Ajami’, nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. It tells a story about everyday life in the neighborhood of Ajami, in Jaffa, from five diverse perspectives.

“You know I didn’t make this film to make prizes or to get nominated for the Oscars. I just made it because I wanted to make a good film,” said Copti, who also plays one of the characters in the film. “This is what I love, I love making cinema. And if we’re going to win, it’d be all right. But if we’re not going to win, it’d be also fine.” It took him and his Co-director Yaron Shani seven years to make Ajami, using regular people from the neighborhood instead of actors.

“I was living with my parents! I couldn’t afford even an apartment, and my partner was living with his wife’s parents,” he said. But it was worth it. “We didn’t try to bring a kind of manifesto to it. We took people from Ajami itself, they knew what they were talking about because they’ve been experiencing and living this life,” he said. “You can feel these are real emotions, real people, not a performance. And that’s something. You really go into the psychology of each and every character and relate to it and understand things.” That’s why it’s been affecting people all over the world, playing to sell-out crowds in Europe and North America, and winning more awards than he can count, from Cannes to the Toronto Film Festival. But for him, the highest honour he got was seeing people of all religions watching his movie.

You get used “Thoughts and arts are the only bridges between people. This is the only way to communicate, even between enemies or rival parties. One of the biggest achievements for me, is non-Arabs going to see it. It never happened, non-Arabs going to the cinema to watch a film 90 per cent in Arabic, and relating to Palestinian characters,” he said. “For me this is the biggest achievement because the Palestinian was demonized and dehumanized since 1948. And now for the first time they see people and they cry whenever a Palestinian goes through a sad thing, and they don’t think about it.” Ajami is a melting pot of religions and experiences, caught in the heart of history as the dumping-ground for Palestinian refugees in 1948. What many people outside the area don’t realize though is that there is still a strong Arab culture there, with more to the debate than Gaza or the West Bank. “This film is not straightforward political in this sense – it’s just telling the story of simple people who try to

to racism, you get used to discrimination. This film is kind of self-criticism, trying to shake people and wake them up, to understand that their life is not normal,” he said. “ And on the other hand I’m trying to show that each and every one of us lives in his own world, without knowing anything about the other side, and it’s all a matter of different perspectives. This film gives you the chance to walk for a certain amount of time in the shoes of your enemy. And then suddenly you relate to your enemy, you identify with him and you see that basically he’s just a good person who is making these horrible things because his perspective conflicts with yours. Everybody acts just out of love for others.” Which is, ultimately, why he made the film in the first place. “All my art is my way of resistance, it’s my way to change my reality. This movie is not victimizing any side, it is not patronizing, it is not pointing the finger and blaming any side. But once you watch it, you see that something is not right,” he said. “When you watch it you’ll understand what I’m talking about.” 41

QH SENSATIONS LIVE

The Detox Diary By Cecilia Leigh

Picture a girl, caught in a tidal wave of stress and toxins, going on a journey through space and time. She’s left the office, and entered: the detox zone.

S

o apparently my body is a toxic cesspool of chemical sludge. Or coffee, I’m not quite sure. Anyway, in an effort to combat this and embrace a more balanced, healthy lifestyle, I check out The Six Senses Spa’s Puriti detox program. Over the course of four days, my body will be massaged, exercised, stretched, and flushed with a combination of patented herbal capsules, shakes, juices, teas and broths.

DAY 1: And we’re off... 8:00 a.m. Have to say, if a detox involves a stay at a glitzy hotel, things can’t be that bad! I’ve checked into the Sharq Village and Spa for the duration of my program, and after a quick tour of the room reveals those sneaky devils have cleaned out my minibar, I hit the high thread count sack. I’m woken up by the arrival of cup number one of many many cups of tea. After that, I proceed to the gym for my first workout with one of two lovely trainers who’ll be helping me out for the next few days. What is this green gunk and why must I drink it? 11:00 a.m. The workout wasn’t bad at all- gentle cardio, some light weights, and then... it. The tall glass of murky green liquid composed apparently of banana, Puriti coconut water and possibly Oscar the Grouch’s tears. Despite it’s unsettling colour, it’s actually pretty tasty, and gives me enough energy to power through a 45 minute walk around the hotels grounds before retiring to my room. Where I’m greeted with glass-of-mushy-odd number two, this one made primarily of prunes. I’ve never eaten a prune in my life. Frankly, I’m afraid of them (I have an aversion to dried fruit. It’s just weird. Fruit was not meant

to look like leather or shrunken heads). But this one, mixed with apple, is actually remarkably sweet. This is easy!

DAY 2: I’m an Idiot 12:30 p.m. I’m hungry, I have a headache, and I feel nauseous. I’m assured this is simply the toxins leaving my body and will end. I buy that just about as much as I buy feeling like you’re going to pass out is the fun part of hot yoga. I want a sandwich. 3:00 p.m. Seriously, sandwich? Anyone? Tip number one: Prep your relatives 7:45 p.m. So this sandwich longing has reached unicorn-punching levels. Alas, I’m thwarted by ethical friends who refuse to be my sandwich co-conspirators and smuggle something in in some sort of improvised lunch-meat underground railroad (yes, I tried to entice them with the promise of tiny trains and literal humour. Both failed). In the long run, it’s a good thing. But before entering a detox program, maybe take a minute to prep your friends and relatives for solid-food begging moments and the appropriate response (which would be akin to the methods employed in ‘28 Days Later’, but in a completely different and less plague ridden context).

DAY 3: 11:00 a.m.: I feel better. I’m still seeing visions of turkey and swiss dance in my head, but I don’t feel the pounding headache of before. Could it be this works? I feel calmer, more relaxed: whether it’s the detox, the 12 hours a night I’m scoring in my down duvet, or the daily massages, I can’t say, but something is good.

Cheater Cheater Hors d’œuvre Eater 8:45 p.m.: I had to attend a work event this evening and while I resisted the lure of the buffet line, I was no match for the siren’s song of a passing tray. My spidey-and-deep-fried sense tingling, I lunged fast as lighting for a passing samosa. I was a snack ninja. And I immediately felt guilty – this means the parsley juice I downed earlier was drunk in vain. Curses. I try not to beat myself up too much though, and move on.

DAY 4: Sometimes You Feel Like A Nut 2:00 p.m. I find myself looking forward with an intense longing usually reserved for foodstuffs involving the word ‘cheese’ and ‘cake’ to the handful of nuts and two dates I get after each spa treatment. One thing, you come to appreciate food more, feeling each bite, every texture, crunch and surge of flavour more than before. You can feel it going through your body and don’t eat mindlessly. 6:00 p.m. My last evening broth, and my last nightly foot bath and massage before I say adieu. Before, I thought I’d be longing for a cheeseburger about now, but... I’m not. I feel lighter. I’m off caffeine, I’m off salt, and I’m off sugar. I feel better. And I like it.

The International Association of Athletics Federation World Indoor Championships are coming to Doha this month! QH gets the scoop on who to watch out for during this exciting competition!

T

he 13th International Association of Athletics Federation World Indoor Championships will be held between March 12th and 14th 2010 in Doha at the magnificent Aspire Dome. Hosting the events is an honour that has firmly placed Qatar on the map of athletic excellence. As Mr. Abdulrahman Al-Dossari,

Marketing Manager of Doha 2010 and Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Qatar Olympic Committee said: “This is one of the most important events, not just for Qatar, but for the entire region. The World Indoor Championships were inaugurated in 1985 in Paris, France and

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS

were known as the World Indoor Games until 1987. The events have since been held every two years except for 2003 and 2004, when they were held consecutively, showcasing the athletic mastery of contestants from around the world.

Indoor Fun. The IAAF World Indoor Championships hit Doha this month.

The distinctive Aspire Dome which will house the games provides the perfect setting for the Championships. The Dome covers an impressive area of about 120,000

square meters and distinguishes Qatar as a nation committed to furthering keen interest and participation in athletic competitions. With a total seating capacity of 15,000 spectators, the Dome contains facilities of thirteen individual sports arenas including a track and field venue, swimming and diving pool, gymnastics hall, squash courts, two multi-sports venues, volleyball and a full-sized indoor football pitch, all within a climate controlled environment.

“This is one of the most important events, not just for Qatar, but for the entire region.”

Several athletes have used the Championships as a platform to showcase their athletic prowess. Mozambique’s Maria de Lurdes Mutola certainly set herself apart as a force to be reckoned with when she claimed an incredible seven gold medals in the women’s 800 m from 1993 to 2006. Cuban Iván Pedroso took five straight golds in the men’s long jump from 1993 to 2001. Stefka Kostadinova, a high jumper from Bulgaria, has also taken top spot five times in the women’s event. So who should you look out for at the upcoming championship? Eying the 3000m at the event is the two-time Olympic medalist and 2007 double World champion, Bernard Lagat. He has already enjoyed a victorious start to the year, winning the

Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York last month for an historic eighth time. For all the competitive enthusiasts, the Championships will offer quite a few enticing duels. World champion 24 year old Jessica Ennis of Great Britain who topped the 2009 outdoor rankings and has recently established a national 60m hurdles record will take part in what will be her first ever World Indoor Pentathlon competition. Ennis will take on Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska of Ukraine. In the men’s Heptathlon, a similar rematch between Berlin World champion Trey Hardee and runner up Leonel Suarez of Cuba will also prove a nail biting head to head. Mokoena, the only South African athlete to return from the Beijing Olympics with a medal (silver), is also hoping to successfully defend the title he won at the 2008 World Indoor Games. The 2010 World Indoor Games Championships is sure to be a spectacular show of athletic finesse. Make sure you get your ticket! For information regarding the Championships Time Table, please visit www.iaaf.org/wic10/index.html Tickets are available at Virgin Megastore, Villaggio Mall.

COLOUR SCOPE

Blue gives you the focus to visualize and expand your mind. Its calming effect allows you to concentrate on your dreams. If you are dieting think cool blue plates and you will eat less! If you need to realize your dreams, combine orange and blue in your office. It’s the new colour of money! By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

Nature of Blue:

Blue is a beautiful natural colour, from the blue of the sky to the deep blue waters of the ocean. Blue is the coldest colour in our atmosphere. From space, our blue planet is like a glistening sapphire floating in the universe. Blue surrounds us. Its cool, calming effect seems to make time pass more quickly. Blue is a good colour for bedrooms because it has been proven to help you sleep better. However, too much blue can dampen spirits and according to colour tests, it can actually calm your resting heart rate! People who prefer blue are able to deny the energy of the present and anticipate the future.

Today, in the modern business world, blue represents importance, intelligence, stability and confidence without being somber or sinister, hence the blue power suit of corporate world and the blue uniforms of police officers.

Culture of Blue: In many diverse cultures blue conveys

significant meanings, especially in religious beliefs: it is thought to bring peace, or has been used to keep bad spirits away. For example, in ancient times, it was believed that evil spirits menaced the well-being of infants. It was also believed that evil spirits were allergic to certain colours, especially blue. Hence, blue was used as a precaution. In the Middle East, there is a tradition to paint the doors of houses blue to frighten away demons. In Iran, it is the colour of mourning, while in the USA, it is a colour associated with loyalty and true love, and hence lucky for brides, who must wear “something blue” as part of the bridal tradition.

Using Blue: Not all blues are the same, a deep royal blue or “azure” gives the wearer a touch of superiority. Navy blue is almost black. Combine a light shirt and dark blue suit to convey trust and truthfulness — banker’s colours. Although blue is a yearround colour, pastel blues, with pinks and pale yellows, suggest springtime while deep blue is a colder weather colour. In your home, use blue to cool down a red or an orange environment. Orange will bring out “the dedication to implement without disruption” and blue will give you the mental clarity to “fulfill your dreams”, besides orange is blue’s colour compliment on the colour wheel! For a more peaceful contrast, decorate other areas of the house with combinations of blue and yellow or white. Dark blue with white is fresh, crisp, and nautical. Red, white and blue is a patriotic colour trio for many countries, including the United States. Use a dark blue or indigo with metallic accents, in silver or gold for an elegantly rich appearance. Remember, dark walls look best with light flooring and furniture.

The more you like blue,

you are more able to visualize the future.

The less you like blue,

you are less able to anticipate the future
