we bring Welcome to the wonderful world of Qatar Happening! This month down you the top things that are making our metaphorical showcase -show this month! Pay Attention Webster!

Vive La Moo

Anyone who’s been reading us for about as long as it took for you to reach this sentence knows we enjoy making up words. But our madcap adventures in language are not actually our own idea (say it ain’t so!). There’s a long tradition of making up ‘sniglets’ or “words that should be in the dictionary but aren’t.” It even have a Facebook page! But why not just make up some of your own, and claim you’re advancing the language and celebrating your connection with the verbalization of the human experience? Or you know, just putting ‘licious’ on the end of things.

We love a good cartoon featuring oddly anamorphic animals as much as the next person, so the Internet cartoon ‘Cows with Guns’ has been making us giggle like the love child of Barney and Elmo for years. This month it got dusted off from the deepest recesses of the refrigerator (and by that we totally mean our favourites list from back in 2002), in honour of our BBQing how-to story! Bon Appetite, and remember: no one expects chickens in choppers. Check it out on Youtube.

GleeGlee GleeGlee Glee. And free video.

Kelly for Prom Queen

The above title just about approximates the complete level of SQUEE certain members of the staff reached when Glee returned to the airways! The singing choir of teens with their plucky and delightfully disheveled teacher are back to thwart the evil mechanizations of Sue Sylvester (who is, incidentally, engorged with venom and triumph this season)! Finn singing a Doors song is worth the price of admission. Check out www.surfthechannel.com for streaming videos of this and other shows (although, once you go Glee, you really won’t be able to come back. Don’t say we didn’t warn you).

10

I can has Weird Winston, the star of the Four Four pop culture blog, is our favourite ugly alien cat. We wish he lived under our beds and would emerge for sweet strokings before disappearing into the night like our very own Ewok with behavioural problems. He’s a pure bred cat owned with his brother Rudy by the author, who chronicles his neurotic adventures for the blog-reading public. Seriously, this isn’t just a kitty and a cheeseburger. This is so much more. Check it out at www.fourfour.typepad.com

We’ve re-fallen in love with Kelly, of The Liam Show fame. With quirky videos, a bizarre sense of humour, and easily quotable catch phrases; she rocks our socks, our shoes, and our flipflops all at the same time. Even if she won’t let us borrow that top. And has all those rules about Text Message breakups. Check out all her shenanigans, particularly those of the musical kind, at www.liamshow.com.

Want more? We’re just this cool every day on Facebook! Friend us, add us on Twitter, and remember: have your pets spayed or neutered.

Literarlicious

Sweet Treat

For mums with a literary bent, The Vodafone Women in Qatar: The Inside Story just hit stands! Published by Vodafone with the support of Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing, it includes writings from 36 Vodafone women employees from 23 different countries. All proceeds will go to the “Writer’s World” fund at Bloomsbury, which helps writers in Qatar. The book is on sale at the I-Spy bookshop in City Center Doha for QR 60.

Fauchon takes the cookie and watches it crumble all the way into our mouths with their yummy baskets of pre-packaged treats to make your mother squeel with delight! So much better than your average macaroni picture (we know you spent so much time on it but there’s sugar in these!), their cookies and cakes are something that every mom will adore. Visit them at their shop on Salwa road, call 432-4888, or check them out online at www.fauchon.com.

Fresh Faced The weather is heating up, but what better way to keep your cool than with makeup that stays on forever? MAC Cosmetics’ latest creations, the Art Supplies line, look like crayolas but are solid enough to stick it out through the hot and humid Doha evenings– their Greasepaint Stick eyeliner is miraculously waterproof. We also adore their lipstains, for that pinup girl look even under water!

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

Joe Mitri, one of the more popular DJs in the city, rocks Doha’s socks on a regular basis, and now he shares his secrets for getting the party started with QH! QH: What is this DJing I’ve heard so much about?

QH: What can music do to set the mood at a party?

JM: DJing in general is a chain of several elements that has to be put together to create the best experience possible. Just like you build up your set from a soft mood to harder mood, same with the volume, same with the light effects– they’re all related, and one missing element will affect the whole atmosphere.

JM: Music is the main thing in a party, and it always has to achieve a journey. If a DJ is playing, he has to understand the crowd and play accordingly to keep them entertained from the moment he starts his set till the end.

14

QH: How do you figure out what mood you want to achieve? JM: Every crowd has a different mood, with experience, a DJ can understand this mood, and mix his music accordingly, (almost with) some kind of telepathy! QH: How do you really get the party started with music? JM: Every opening set has to be the base of the night or event. You have to prepare the crowd for what’s coming next, so mainly it’s a build up to the peak time, and style differs based on the event theme.

Drop It Like it’s Luke Warm Whether you de sk dance to the so undtrack of Glee, Rent an d Avenue Q, do a little twirl in the middle of City Center to Ja panese Pop, or have caused incid ents due to vogu eing in your car like a deranged Village Person, (li ke some staff members best le ft unmentioned), we all have some slightly em barrassing tunes that fill us with unabashed delight! Log on to our Facebook page an d tell us yours!

QH: What do people need if they want to do it themselves? JM: If they’re doing it for fun, all they need is two CD players and a mixer and a room, and they call them “room DJs!” QH: What do you do when it’s just not working? JM: Never happened LOL! But definitely, not all crowds are easy to please, some of them don’t even want to dance, but you can always please them with your music variety.

QH: Any tips or tricks for creating the ultimate party playlist? JM: My main tip is and was always never ever disrespect the crowd’s taste. Because crowds make a DJ successful or not; so whatever you do, never go out of the event without pleasing every person in there. QH: What are some fool-proof tracks? JM: I play several styles, from R&B to Pop to Dance and House; it depends on the crowd. But definitely every time era has its own key tunes, and the more the DJ can gather a big number of key tunes, the more he will set the right mood in any type of event! 15

QH caught up with he rap og ot ph ale m fe e re th through the eyes of find out what’s going on to d ali Kh a ja’ Ra d an im Na Mona Ay yash, Sara inside their cameras. QH: What is the exhibit? How would you describe it? SN: My exhibit consists of eight photographs which describe Dubai as a transient place where growth and destruction are regular occurrences. Its relentless will to grow has given birth to destruction and spaces which were once empty desert plots fighting for air. Its state is never absolute. Regardless if this is a positive or negative truth, it is a quality which I would classify as one of its most describable essences. Photographing homes that were in the process of being destroyed was my way of illustrating Dubai’s fluxing nature. They were all photographed within the same housing compound which was affiliated with the school I studied at for 14 years, thus I had many friends that had once lived there. I felt that my small, personal story could speak of Dubai in a much broader way.

Raja’a Khalid QH: Why photographs? Why not another medium?

QH: What about it is unique to the region?

MA: I feel like I can control my messages. I SN: I haven’t seen much work that has been produced in Dubai about the region, can be either discrete or vocal with what I am saying with my artwork, sometimes both. but the work that I have seen has mostly focused on the construction workers or SN: Photography itself is of a very transient about the newer buildings, not so much nature; of not only being in constant about the old. I think it is a phase of Dubai technical development but also in the that needs cherishing and preserving; analogous process of reading the situation photographing them was my, perhaps as light, moving it onto a negative, into unique, way of doing so. a processor, through a projector onto photographic paper. It is all a process of constantly altering the site’s original state. QH: Why is this work important? RK: Even today with digital technology it has a purity that is difficult to duplicate with SN: It is important because I feel it any other medium. to be truthful. People portray Dubai in various ways, but mostly as a skyscraper Disneyland with bays and islands plotted throughout. The fact is, however, that it is a relatively new and fractional aspect of Dubai, and in order to make way for these pristine buildings and state-ofthe-art projects, Dubai’s natural ocean-flow and old structures have been sacrificed.

RK: Photographing Dubai within the context of art is important because of the unique situation here and, contrary to popular belief, there aren’t enough photographers working with the city as their muse. Our work isn’t tied up with our own backgrounds, so it isn’t distilled to the point where it becomes an outsider’s observation. And since none of us is actually Emirati, we have the necessary distance to the city to capture it without making it personal.

The exhib it runs from May 5th till June 1 7 10 a.m. ti th from ll 7 p.m. F or more info rmation, visit www.the thirdline.c om

Mona Ayyash QH: Your exhibit is the work of three women. Does this change the perspective? SN: I don’t feel that my work has a specific audience in relation to sex-type, nor do I think the work would be made different coming from a male, besides the obvious difference in style, technique, etc. I find that many people that have lived in Dubai for a long time share a similar view point on the matter, whether it be males or females. RK: When it comes to an artistic medium, especially with film and photography, the gender of the artist is entirely irrelevant. Specific expectations imposed by cultural norms within art might push male and female artists to address their subject in a certain manner, but luckily we don’t suffer from anything like that here in Dubai.

QH: What’s the reaction been like? MA: My work doesn’t speak to the audience right away. It requires one to stand in front of it and really look at the photographs and only then will they notice how awkward each scene is. Some people do not understand it right away and ask me to explain while others take their time and start piecing it together on their own. SN: I haven’t shown my work to too many people, though the reaction I have gotten has been positive. I’m hoping to get comments at the opening and throughout the length of the exhibit. It will be interesting and I’m very excited!

New Lease on Art! The Third Line Galley opens its newest space, called Projects, a new viewing space dedicated to displaying works from new and locally-based artists. Projects will hold separate exhibitions showcasing up-and-coming artists, and those unique to the region. It came about as the Gallery acknowledged the desire for local artists to display their work, and for the art-loving community in Doha to see it. To be displayed, an artist simply has to display a connection to the city or the country, whether they’ve lived, worked, or studied here. Organizers say they hope this will help inspire people regardless of nationality to contribute to the glittering art scene in Doha. While the main space at the Third Line Gallery has been closed since January, organizers say they hope to continue bringing events and exhibitions to Doha– starting with some homegrown talent!

Girl Power

Forget the stereotypes. Women are more likely to become infected with HIV than men. In every part of the world, the number of women infected with HIV is growing. In sub-Saharan Africa, six out of every 10 adults living with HIV are women. In the United States, the number of women living with HIV has tripled since 1985. More African American women between the ages of 18 and 35 die from AIDS than from any other illness.

IMAGES COURTESY OF MAC COSMETICS

But funding has not kept up with reality: only about half of countries report budget allocations specifically related to HIV-related programs for women. MAC’s trying to help: this year they launched their From Our Lips campaign, with $ 2 million in new donations to support efforts waged by women and on behalf of women. It supports programs in HIV hot spots like South Africa, the Caribbean and the United States’ rural South and Washington D.C., confronting the complicated causes of HIV infection in women and girls: violence, discrimination and unequal access to financial and social resources.

HIV and AIDS is a worldwide problem that is growing: particularly among women. The MAC AIDS Fund aims to do something about that. Since its founding in 1994, the MAC AIDS Fund has invested more than $150 million to organizations in more than 67 countries to improve the lives of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS and combat the epidemic. How? By selling lipstick. In the early 90s, as the fashion and entertainment worlds were being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic, Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, cofounders of MAC Cosmetics, encouraged by employees, created the MAC AIDS Fund, and the Viva Glam Lipsticks that fund it. There have so far been ten Viva Glam product lines, including lipsticks and lip glosses, each sponsored by a celebrity. So far 11 million Viva Glam lipsticks have been sold, with 100 per cent of the profits going to the fund.

Our fav NGOs supporting women and girls, targeting education and the root causes which lead to infection and fatality are:

Omwaana Ono International: based in Uganda, they are building schools for girls, wells, training programs, and clinics for whole community. Their slogan? ‘Educate a girl and you educate a nation’. Check them out at www.omwaanaono.ca Child Haven International: providing homes for destitute women and children in India, Nepal, Tibet and Bangladesh. Brita Fray, the Doha Community Orchestra Director, tells QH how the universal language of music is bringing the community of Doha closer together, and what it’s like to hold the baton as the only female conductor in Doha.

Muse of Music. Brita has been leading the orchestra and teaching since she arrived in Doha from the USA.

B

rita Fray has a profound love of music. She believes anyone – no matter what background – can appreciate music at some level.

“Personally, I feel so honoured to make music with people and share my passion for music with people. Music can be feelings; it can be a message, or it can simply be something beautiful,” says Brita. Brita became aware of the The Doha Community Orchestra (DCO), a non-profit community organization made up of musicians resident in Qatar or enrolled at education institutions in Qatar, when she started teaching at Qatar Academy on her arrival in Doha in 2008. With a background in teaching music, specifically the viola, Brita taught for many years in Chicago before she relocated to Doha.

full symphony orchestra, and of playing and learning alongside more experienced musicians. “Qatar is such a metropolitan (environment) with a mix of different cultures,” says Brita. “It’s amazing to see what kind of talent there is in the community, something you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find here”. The DCO was founded in October 2005 by two music teachers, Kathy Stuart and Lesley McBright. Originally called the Doha Chamber Orchestra, the DCO started off with just ten string players, but has grown to a full-sized symphony orchestra and is entering their sixth season of music making. The orchestra now numbers around sixty members, aged eight to sixty, and auditions are held every year in the fall. Around two thirds of the orchestra are school students, and the adult members include professional musicians, music teachers and amateurs.

I feel so honoured to make music with people and share my passion for music with people.

“Teaching music is my forte,” Brita says with a smile. “It’s something I love to do”. Brita first played with DCO to assist at one of their concerts, and before long, she was doing what she loved – coaching and teaching. The mission of the DCO, Brita explains, is to provide learner musicians of all ages with the opportunity of performing in a 28

Another of Brita’s loves is conducting string orchestras. In Chicago where she lived for 10 years, Brita conducted the All City Youth Orchestra of Chicago. In 2009, the DCO took a new direction and, while still performing as a full orchestra, it also separated into two sections: The Wind Band, under the direction of Sanford Jones; and The String Orchestra, conducted by Brita herself. Shortly thereafter, Brita continued her journey of knowledge

and started conducting both sections together. The only female conductor in a position normally dominated by men, Brita feels that to participate in her role with DCO is “a blessing and a great honour”. So how has the word of DCO managed to spread? Brita and her fellow members encourage music lovers who have had previous experience in an orchestra to join them, and are often found visiting outreach fairs and community events to spark the interest of new arrivals in Doha. Brita also feels anything that sheds light on any orchestra, such as themselves and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), motivate people and make them aware of what is possible, stirring up new interest and opening new avenues. Many of their members, she adds, are musicians who find their website by chance because they are searching for exactly this kind of activity and experience in Doha. DCO meet every Thursday, after work or school, and every meeting is a joy to Brita. “People come because they love making music and getting together – students have been studying all day and all week, people have been working, but they make the time and dedicate themselves to coming to DCO,” she says. “No matter how tired I am after a long week I’m given a lot of energy from the orchestra members, as they are so special and so very happy to be here, playing and practising together”. DCO will be holding the Spring Into Music Concert on May 8th. Going from strength to strength, with orchestra numbers increasing, the skill level developing and a repertoire that consists of classical and popular works – from Mendelssohn and Brahms to The Magnificent Seven and Phantom of the Opera – DCO are well on their way to achieving success. “We are playing more and more challenging pieces,” Brita happily tells us, “and we’re only getting better and better!” For more information on DCO browse through the website, www.dohaorchestra.com, or contact them directly if you are interested in joining or attending concerts.

We love our literature, and when authors Randa Abdel-Fattah and Suad Amiry visted Doha, we had to see what they were typing about! Inspired by the ending school year, this month’s selection is chosen for the young readers in your life.

Nothing to Lose But Your Life: An 18-hour journey with Murad by Suad Amiry

In her book, Amiry details the exciting account of her efforts to illegally cross the Israeli border to seek work alongside a busload of men. Soak it Up The difference between ok and grilled magnificence? The marinade!

The weather is heating up, and so are the hot coals of our barbecue-loving hearts! We caught up with Executive Chef Matthew Morrison, the Ritz-Carlton Doha’s resident God of the Grill, to find out how he gets his meat oh so tantalizing (and not at all black or raw like what usually happens when we BBQ).

36

Marinades tenderize the meat, add flavour and help lock in moisture, and can even act as a dressing after cooking. When concocting your perfect marinade, think about balancing acidity and sugars: the acids break down the meat and help flavours penetrate, and the sugars caramelize. Acids can be anything from vinegar to citrus juices like orange, lemon and lime. Sugars can be actual sugar, fruit, or even sodas like 7Up, cola, and ginger ale. But your marinade isn’t just acid and sugar: other ingredients can help it along as well. Oils and water dilute the mix and help the process. Garlic also lends a hand, not just for the

taste, but for the reactio n it has with the acids, helping tastes seep into the meat. Make sure to wash the meat clean of all blood before you place it in the marinade – this wil l also help tenderize it if you soak it in water first. Once you’ve concocted your potion, you have to decide how long to leave the meat in the del ectable bath. If you have more time to marinate, use less acidit y. If you have less, use more- it will help the flavours get into the me at faster. 24 hours is a good maximum time for most items, 12 hours for fish. Once you’ve got the me at going, don’t be concerned if it changes colour: chicken will tak e on the colours in the marinade , and fish will often get white aro und the edges. The acid begins to ‘cold cook’ it as it soaks!

Or just try store bought salad dres sing: they already have the right balance of acids and sugars, and com e in delicious prep ackaged flavours. Try Fren ch Dressing on steak, or Italian on chicken!

Prometheus Power According to Chef Matthew, you don’t need a fancy grill to make excellent food. It’s all about the coals – they need to be at the right temperature to cook the food without reducing the outside to charcoal while the tender innards stay raw. Your grill doesn’t even need a cover- while they might look swanky and make you feel like the king of the spatula when opening and closing in a cloud of dramatic smoke, all they do is trap that smoke and heat inside. You want to cook on the coals with heat, not smoke your food!

SPOTLIGHT ON FOOD

To get the perfect coals, let the fire rage for at least 45 minutes before you start cooking. You want to cook on the coals, not on flames: cooking over flames will add carbon taste and burn your food. You want your coals to be dark gray to black and hot, not grayish white and cold. Once you’ve got your coals roaring, you’ve got to prepare your grill itself: Chef Matthew recommends spraying the grill with Pam or a similar cooking spray. Yes, this will steam like the bowels of Hades, but it will also keep your food from sticking! Plus, yummy butter smell. Let the grill heat up with the coals, and you’re ready to go!

Get Cooking! Your meat is marinated, your coals are perfect: now is the magic moment you throw you food on the grill and laugh like a Neanderthal at your culinary brilliance. But beware: this takes time. Most foods, like chicken, need to slow cook for around 30 minutes before they’re finished. Fish can go faster, and should be put on after other meats. You can’t rush a good BBQ, no matter if your guests are chomping at the bit to take a bite. A quick tip is to cook the food about 50 percent before guests arrive, and store in a cooler (which, if filled with hot items and no ice, will actually keep heat in and things warm) till your guests arrive, then finish on the grill. Always burning your meat? Chef Matthew says there’s nothing wrong with cooking most of the way on the grill, then finishing the food in the oven– you get that grilled look and taste, without burning the outside as you try to cook the inside! With chicken and other meats, place it bone side down to start, and turn it often to get it cooked evenly. Never leave a BBQ unattended: now is the time to gather your friends around to marvel at your grilling prowess, as you baby your food for best results. Spend time moving the food around, so you find where the hot spots are. Fish needs a higher heat, while chicken is fine in the cooler spots. BBQ sauce should be the last thing you brush on your creation. Slowly brush it on when 90 percen centt done so it doesn’t burn.

The decor

• Break out coloured bulbs to instantly change a space and enhance a mood.

Big decision is at home or rent a hall. Most compounds have recreation rooms – just make sure to book ahead of time!

The food & drink

When it comes to décor, less is more: Choose some ‘key’ elements to communicate the theme- one or two well chosen items are better than a room full of tat. • Print pictures off the internet and enlarge, place on the wall. • Use fresh fruit in glass bowls with water – coloured water creates interesting effects, and can be achieved with a bottle of food colouring and some tap water.

Cooking yourself or calling in the pros? Or take the modern-day third option: buy readymade, frozen titbits and make them look like real party food by dressing them up with fresh items- think a store bought cake decorated with fresh fruit, frozen appetizers on an interesting plate next to cut up vegetables or cheese, etc.

Music

• Make the party green and don’t use cut flowers – use potted plants. They’ll look great on party day and you can keep them around afterwards!

Top Tips Everyone Forgets

• Choose the music with some thought – use your resources, download the correct music to go with the theme. Create a playlist and set it on a loop. • Good sound is a must! And from this angle, though the clothes coming down the runway are the centre of attention, it is striking to see how the spectators turn up, dressed to impress recreating the whole venue in a catwalk of their own. As one of my all-time favourite designers, Coco Chanel once quoted, “I like fashion to go down the street, but I can’t accept that it should originate there.”

Day Two. Lights, Camera, Reindeer Antlers Each long day begins with just five hours till the first show. In this time, each designer must have all their fabulous creations on site, ready to be steamed to look their best under the bright lights of the catwalk. With just two groups of models, each consisting of over 20 models, rehearsals are a must. They rehearse the sequence they will come out onto the catwalk, the speed of the walk (fast paced for more exaggerated pieces to match the more powerful music, and slower for the more romanticized and elegant pieces). Some designers had more dramatic moments staged to leave a memorable experience such as paparazzi chasing a model down the catwalk or a male model from the audience steppping on to catwalk to greet a girl modeling a wedding dress. The choreographers first talk with the designer and understand what their collection is about, and they listen to the music and suggest what routine is best for the show and the finale. Then it’s to hair and makeup for their first looks. With seven shows a day, there’s just an hour or so between each show for the models to be transformed from sleek hair to big hair, to leaves and twigs intertwined into a tremendously large style. But Amato by Furne One pulled out all stops with his spectacular show and models stomping down the ramp sporting reindeer antlers in their blonde wigs.

QH FEATURE QH SENSATION LIVE

Day Three. Down the Rabbit Hole Each day brought its own chaos and whirlwinds. A dress is misplaced; a designer cannot be found; models cannot be found as they disappeared to get a drink or outdoors getting fresh air and chitchatting on their phones; dealing with PR to ensure the media can get backstage at just the right moments to get the best shots during the rare moments of calm. Even searching for a long lost plastic rabbit for a model to carry down the catwalk didn’t seem like an odd task. It is astounding to see through all the pandemonium of the behind the scenes action, and to then experience this sense of calm as the lights turn down, the music turns up and the show is underway. While choking on hairspray and heat from the hair and makeup room, I must sprint over to the dressing room as my walkie-talkie instructed me to put right some mayhem before letting my gasping self to take a moment to relax and watch the show. Tall models appear, as though walking mannequins, representing fashion in a seemingly effortless manner, making it all look so simple and seamless. For the team, however, this is just a countdown to the next bout of running around to get the next show primed and all set to go.

Day Four. Welcome to the Doll House With just two days remaining, it still felt like an eternity. Whilst fighting exhaustion, I know there is not much left before having to get back to the real world, away from hairspray, pins, makeup, high-heels and towering human Barbie dolls. As Michael Cinco’s breathtaking show captivated the audience, with his couture creations, I am reminded again how fortunate it is to have the chance to witness such works of art.

Day Five. Take a Bow With extravagant displays of high-end fashion put on for the final day, and Sabyasachi’s Grand Finale, it was hard to believe how fast it had gone. Would I go through it again? Without a doubt. Having met such amazing people from the fashion world, and to experience all the ins and outs, it has left me more inspired to be increasingly absorbed in this fast-paced industry.

SNEAKY PEAK Minutes before due on the ramp, a model was too short for a dress, so the search is on for scissors, which are then taken to the dress and the hem of a beautiful silk dress is brutally hacked away! Labels under shoes – please remember to remove them! It is so distracting once you notice it, especially on a catwalk. There was one designer I approached during rehearsals to point out that her labels were still on. During her attempt to remove them, one of the heels broke! Oops! Better than breaking them on the catwalk! While wearing a very long and heavy wedding dress, a model found it easier to go barefoot and tip-toe down the ramp and kick the dress forward before the next step. Clever! Double-sided tape works wonders – especially when the straps on your dress keep falling right before you are due on the catwalk. 47

Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana are some of the most recognizable names in the business. Ever wonder how they started out? Ever wonder who the next hot young designer’s name will be on everyone’s lips? QH previews the Senior Collections of some of Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar’s Fashion Design Graduates of 2010. Could they be among the future leaders in fashion? Each year VCUQatar hosts a professional runway show which highlights the designs created by the senior fashion students as well as offering an opportunity to the first and second year students to showcase their designs. The students themselves are responsible for planning and producing all aspects of the event from stage and set design, lighting, theme, final execution, including student model selection, choreography and backstage management. This year’s show, entitled One of Many, will be held in VCUQatar on May 6th, featuring only the best of the student-produced garments, which are selected by a jury of fashion professionals. The beautiful catwalk models are selected from various walks of life and give the clothes an individual edge. Designed for Design: “I never imaged myself becoming a designer. However I was the child who would do math homework with beads and sequins! After high school VCUQ was the right place for me to follow my passion for art and design.“ The Feminine Touch: “I usually like to look at things differently and combine unusual things together in a feminine way. My senior collection is inspired by the feminine shapes of underwater nature, combined with futuristic elements and combinations of wood, metal and recycled clothing.”

Think back to any era in history, clothes are always one of the most prominent icons. With one look at a photograph it is possible to distinguish which era it represents. Cast your mind back to the ladylike fifties, the modern swinging sixties, the bohemian seventies, the work wear eighties, the grunge nineties: each period in time has a look and silhouette that distinguishes it from the previous one. Few other professions require keeping on top of the ever-changing popular opinion as those working in the fashion industry. Trends go in and out of fashion at an alarming rate, and re-emerge just as quickly. However becoming a fashion ‘designer’ is just one of the many roles and career opportunities in the field. The fashion industry is far more than the catwalks, makeup, models, glamour and outlandish outfits; it is a complex multi-billion dollar business, encompassing design, production, distribution, retailing and media. It is the fourth largest industry in the world and the third largest employer in New York. The textile and fashion industry in the Middle East was recently valued at $11.4 billion.

Fashion Designers - responsible for the research, design and development of collections Buyers - responsible for range selection and budget control within retail Merchandisers - responsible for allocation and management of budgets and buying quantities Visual Merchandisers - responsible for in store presentation and displays Stylists - responsible for creating looks for fashion shoots, catwalk shows, music industry etc. Publicists - work with the brands building their profiles in the media, public relations and brand promotion Fashion Consultants - direct multinational brands in how to drive their companies forward Fashion Photographers - work with media, magazines, television Illustrators, Marketing Executives, Retail Managers, Pattern Makers, Technical Designers, Textile/Print/ Embroidery Designers, Accessory Designers, Education, and the list goes on‌

What is this Handball you speak of? Handball is a game in which two teams of seven players attempt to throw a ball into the goal of the other team. The team with the most goals after two thirtyminute periods wins. Usually played indoors, as it will be in Doha, it’s also seen games take to the great outdoors, especially on beaches. It’s a rough and tumble sport including body contact in the hilariously named ‘player sandwich’ (players are only allowed contact when the defensive player is completely in front of the offensive player). Unlike other sports, like basketball, which limit the number of fouls allowed in a game, handball players have as may as they want – which are actually considered a good defense strategy. Most games rack up high scores as well, making it exciting to watch- most teams will score at least 20 goals each! 57

COLOUR SCOPE

By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Colour Instructor and Consultant

Yellow is known as a happy colour, shining with optimism, enlightenment and happiness. Shades of golden yellow carry the promise of a positive future and nothing denotes friendship more than yellow roses! Nature of Yellow: Yellow will advance from surrounding

colours and instill optimism and energy, as well as spark creative thoughts. It is one of the warm colours in the colour wheel and it must be used wisely. Yellow is the most fatiguing to the eye due to the high amount of light that it reflects. In fact, yellow is rarely used as a background on paper or on a website / computer monitor because it causes eyestrain! The colour yellow can also create feelings of frustration and anger. While it is considered a cheerful colour, people are more likely to lose their tempers in yellow rooms and babies tend to cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow can also increase the metabolism. Since yellow is the most visible colour, it is also the most attention-getting colour. Yellow can be used in small amount to draw notice, such as on traffic sign or advertisements.

Yellow increases self-esteem and strengthens overall well-being. Studies have shown that this colour affects us mentally and physically by stimulating the nervous system, activating memory and even encouraging communication.

Culture of Yellow: In the United States, yellow ribbons

were worn for years, as a sign of hope as women waited for their men to come marching home from war. Today, they are still used to welcome home loved ones.

In Chinese culture, where colours correspond with the five primary elements, the directions, and the four seasons, yellow is associated with earth and the centre. This practice is called Feng Shui. According to Feng Shui, yellow is the most enchanting of all colours, as well as easier to “live with” in bigger/larger quantities in the East and South areas of the home. However, though considered a cheerful colour, it has some negative connotations in some cultures; for example, if someone is yellow it means they are a coward. Yellow represents mourning in Egypt. It also signifies “sadness” in Greece’s culture and “jealousy” in France’s. In the past, actors of the Middle Ages wore yellow to signify the dead. Yet the colour has also represented courage (Japan), merchants (India), and peace.

Using Yellow: Yellow often works best as a companion to other colours. Use bright yellow to create excitement when red or orange may be too strong or too dark and you want to brighten up a room. Yellow will perk up a more subdued cool palette of blues, browns and grays. Use lemon yellow with orange for a healthy, summery, citrus theme. Very pale yellows can work as neutrals alongside darker or richer colours like purple and magenta. However, of all the combinations out there, yellow and indigo blue are a high contrast, eye-popping combination that will make any home look amazing.
