After lots of activity in October, we look forward to relaxing in November and celebrating Eid. We are excited to spend time with our family and friends while we enjoy all Qatar has to offer. Here at QH, we want to help maximize your levels of fun and encourage you to take time for leisurely activities. Football fanatics will be happy to hear that tickets are now on sale for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 Finals, taking place January 7 to 29, 2011. Read all about how to buy tickets and decipher the confederation’s colour coding system. For anyone who missed the Doha Tribeca Film Festival or simply craves more film festival news, check out our expanded Arts and Culture section, which includes features on comedian/ director Ahmed Ahmed, actress Yasmine Al-Massri, and actor Ashraf Farah. We also brought you information on the Orientalist Museum’s first exhibition, “A Journey into the World of the Ottomans,” on display from now until January 24, 2011. After months of eager anticipation, we celebrated the opening of a second Chowking in Doha on October 10, 2010. The chain, known for its wonderful Filipino and Chinese food, will surely become an office lunch-time staple for everyone. While we are busy celebrating Eid and enjoying all the month has to offer, we must also remember that November is Diabetes Month. Diabetes is a serious condition that affects us all in one way or another. Learn what life is like for those who suffer from this disease and the people who care for them. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as our team enjoyed putting it together.

QH TEAM

The QH team had a great time putting this issue together. Oh sure, there were some moments when we had to go on a sugar binge just to make it through the day but we loved every hectic minute of it. Here’s what else got us through the month:

Sydnee - The Editor

L’Occitane En Provence’s Flowers Soap – this pretty soap’s sweet scent filled our office and soothed our frazzled nerves. Iced Tea at Sushi Minto – Refreshingly delicious, this sweet iced tea quenched our thirst without sending us into a total sugar frenzy. The Sophia Satchel from Coach – We may not have actually landed one of these hot bags yet but this satchel’s glossy brilliance gave us new incentive to keep earning a paycheque. Dairy Queen’s Soft Serve Vanilla Ice Cream – Remember that sugar binge we mentioned earlier? Usually DQ’s delicious dairy goodness is the sweet nectar that fuels those fructose frenzies.

uru

Ad G Moona -

Rihanna – We spent days perfecting our Only Girl (in the World) “r” tongue rolls so that we could sound just as awesome as our favourite good girl gone bad, because sing-a-longs and magazine work go hand-in-hand, obviously.

Escaping the Colony

Caffeinated Salvation The Original at THE One is a sweet jolt of caffeine blended with the perfect amount of chocolate-y goodness, The Original truly is the best way to start your day. THE One whips coffee and chocolate together in a blender, then serves it ice cold. The Original somehow manages to taste like a really fancy way to get your daily dosage of coffee without being pretentious. So frothy, so delicious, so incredibly uncomplicated. Prepare to order a lot of these luscious beverages, because while one is like a fresh drink of yummy salvation, two will make your day so much more than just bearable.

Hot Pants We were pleasantly surprised to fall madly in love with Ed Hardy’s line of leggings during the Ed Hardy Fashion Show at Wahm. Every model wore some version of these spunky leggings, paired with tunics, dresses, tees, hoodies and mini skirts, exactly as they should be. We particularly liked the grey ones but wouldn’t say no to a pair of black leggings with silver highlights. Decorated with floral swirls and subtle details like buttons, these leggings were neither gaudy nor over-the-top. Instead, these hot pants were a summary of the entire show: cute, fun and just right for Qatar.

Pretty, Pretty Pedis Whenever QH thinks of Essie nail polish, our minds automatically turn to the brands delicate pink Ballet Slippers. However, after we checked out several colours from the new collections available at the Diva Spa, we were swayed by the bright, candy-coloured shades of Essie’s Resort collection. The vivid colours in this line are both pretty and punchy, making them perfect for both manis and pedis. Our favourite shades include Turquoise and Caicos, a minty green splash of class, and Lapis of Luxury, a cool blue shade with just a touch of purple power in it.

Michael Kimber’s website The Colony of Losers is an unflinchingly honest, surprisingly touching look at what life is like for the current generation of university graduates who face a tough time getting a job in light of the global economic crash. Kimber examines his generation’s destroyed hopes and bleak futures in his whip-smart blog about what life is really like once school ends and “real” life begins. No matter where you are in life, whether it be the corner office or your parent’s basement, you will be moved by Kimber’s persistent hope that everyone, no matter who they are or what they do, will find their way out of the colony of losers. Check out Kimber’s frank, goose-bump inducing words of wisdom at www.colony-of-losers.com.

Flavour Heaven in a Box

12

The Bento Box at Spice Market is the perfect mixture of sweet and salty. The latest speedy lunch feature at the Spice Market comes with rice, hamour, mango salad, your choice of soup (try the coconut chicken – your tastebuds will think they’ve died and gone to flavour heaven), and your choice of beef, lamb or chicken (we swooned over the tender beef skewers dipped in a tangy lime sauce). After we gobbled up our flavour-infused meal, we made room for the coffee ice cream, which is now our new favourite way to get our caffeine and sugar intake for the day. Available Saturday to Thursday, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at W Doha for the bargain price of QR 80.

Perfect music to inspire and soothe the soul. Herbie Hancock’s Imagine Project is available through Sony Music.

Work It, Work It! Adidas TECHFIT PowerWEB is the latest wave of sports technology clothing. This workout outfit is designed to hold your muscles in place while you sweat, maximizing strength and endurance. Favoured by athletes for sports such as football, rugby, tennis and basketball, the TECHFIT line includes shorts, T-shirts and vest tops. The average Joe looking to kick his workout up a notch will also benefit from TECHFIT workout clothes because they are designed to increase blood flow, decrease muscle vibration, store and return elastic energy and improve core stability and posture.

Smells Like Sweet Dreams L’Occitane en Provence’s Eau de Toilette Fleur Cherie, one of the latest lines from this famous French house of impeccable taste and class, smells of delicate orange blossoms, neroli, and musk. Traditionally, orange tree blossoms were used to welcome guests, perfume food and encourage peaceful slumber. In some countries, brides still use orange blossoms as part of their pre-wedding ritual for good luck. Spray some of this soft, Mediterranean-inspired fragrance on your neck to entice compliments or on your pillow to have sweet dreams. To ensure the sensuous scent remains all day long, lather up with the rich, moisturizing L’Occitane en Provence Flowers soap first, then lightly spritz the perfume on your skin before getting dressed.

Soap Up The luxurious Morroccan Hamam at Six Senses left us tingling from head to toe. It started with us sitting in a steam room to sweat out all our toxins. Next, a lovely spa professional gently bathed us in the shower room before rubbing us down with Morroccan soap. Derived from olives, the soap left our skin softer than a baby’s tushie. Then we moved to a marble table, where we were scrubbed head to toe with an exfoliating mitt before being soaped up with a loofah. Finally, we had our hair washed with the tender care only a spa professional can deliver. While this treatment is not for the faint of heart or the modest, it is our favourite way to remove dead skin and restore moisture - a must for glowing, silky skin.

QH LifeStyle Awards

BEST DRY CLEANING SERVICE

We continue to celebrate how awesome we are by doling out another QH Lifestyle Award. This month our award goes to the folks at Ramada Dry Cleaners, located next to Mega Mart. It is a way to say ‘Thank You’, for being the BEST Dry Cleaning Service in Doha. Without them, we could not have looked as awesome as we did for our SUIT UP event at the Four Seasons. Keep an eye out for next month’s award for BEST SPA TREATMENT. We are addicted to handing out prizes. Just call us Bob Barker.

If culture is now PEDOBEAR worked out online, OMG, what is that?! does that make Exactly what it sounds like. He’s a cute cartoon bear, with some peculiar tastes. LOLcats Michelangelo? It’s a fact: this Internet thing isn’t a fad. And while the interwebs suck us into their nefarious bowels and roll us around in a pit of despair and Farmville, more and more of what used to be public culture is now played out not in person but via keyboards. Whether it’s conversations or entire friendships that require cables and wires, or art and music, what used to be sacred is now a bit technologically profane. And so, dear reader, we’ve spelunked deep into the inner workings of the net to bring you a guide to today’s culture. It’s a map of the sites, memes, and Internet schlock that make up 2010’s artistic culture. God help us all.

16

Not that we’re supporting these tastes (we are absolutely not), but in a black comedy context, he is freaking hilarious. Used in a variety of ways, from a ‘pedobear stamp of approval’ to lolcat-like captioned photos, this plucky little sociopath shows up all over the Internet, and, much like Jersey Shore, produces first disgust, then guilty laughter.

RICK ROLLING OMG, what is that?! It’s a game, whereby an unsuspecting person is sent a link to something they might actually want to see. Only, upon clicking said link, they are redirected to a video of Rick Astley’s song Never Gonna Give you Up. Why? We may never know. But we do know that, whenever it happens to us, his acid wash denim suit and flipped back hair seduces us into watching that video longer than is strictly necessary. Oh Rick, we will never run around and desert you.

It’s 2010’s... Oscar Wilde At first glance, the gags are crude, easy to It’s 2010’s... Monet understand, and disgustingly dismissible. Just like impressionist paintings close up, But they catch your brain like a misplaced it makes absolutely no sense and leaves bumpit and refuse to let go until you see the your brain huddled in a corner rocking back absurd beauty behind it. SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

4CHAN OMG, what is that?! In a word? The pit of hell. Multiple words, sure, but it takes more than one to describe the depth of illiteracy and cray-cray that lives online at 4chan. Possibly the largest forum in the world, the only board that matters in /b/, where internet trolls are born (and just refuse to die). Started in 2003 as a community message board used mainly to post pictures and topics of anime and manga (yeah, it’s totally that kind of site), its random board (/b/) has become the birth place of everything crazy and delightful that’s popped up in an email from your mother. There are basically no rules and reading it in its raw form will melt your brain. And make your soul need a shower, and possibly large quantities of hand sanitizer. It’s 2010’s... Plato Just as that old Greek has his sticky philosophical fingers on everything (seriously- Inception was basically one giant allegory of the cave, and don’t even get us started on the Matrix), the web goblins at 4chan have been involved in everything glorious and disgusting to come out of Internet culture. Basically every other meme on this list can trace its inglorious roots back to /b/ and the folks who lurk there, doing it all for the lulz. And just like Plato, who has haunted our dreams since college and just will not get out of our skulls (no matter how much we plead) 4chan will always be there. In your nightmares.

THE CHEEZBURGER NETWORK OMG, what is that?! From humble beginnings of pictures of kitties with poorly spelt captions, this has spawned an empire. An empire with bad grammar. Three years after Happy Cat asked if he could have a sandwich with cheese, the network includes 53 sites which collectively attracted a record 16 million unique visitors in May. They now deal in inanimate objects, cats, dogs, celebrities – anything that can be captioned awkwardly, they will do. It’s 2010’s... Shakespeare If you want to watch the death and horribly stunted rise of the languagephoenix, look no further than the site that made ‘Oh Hai’ an acceptable greeting. Whatever side you land on the language debate, this chain of sites comes down hard, redefining how we do language and punctuation. While the bard is credited with seminal works of literature and prose that captured the best of the literary human spirit (not to mention being emo with his preteen love birds offing themselves in a desperate bid for noone-understands-me attention) he also was totally not above just making stuff up. He created the words ‘apostrophe’ and for that, us grammar nerds have to love him. But he’s also responsible for ‘accommodation,’ ‘obscene,’ ‘indistinguishable’ and ‘gnarled,’ among thousands of others. Think about that the next time someone asks you if you ‘wants cheezburger.’

FAIL BLOG/ F MY LIFE OMG, what is that?! Both these sites revel in the little failures that make the world go around and the rest of us giggle in schadenfreude glee. Fail Blog is a collection of photos and videos, while F My Life is short tales of fail, but both accomplish the same thing: discordant things brought together to make the rest of us giggle and accept that, essentially, life sucks. It’s 2010’s... Van Gogh This guy was so depressed he cut off his own ear. That’s not even an easy appendage to remove! That takes way more emo depression chops then a Twilight nerd cutting themselves with their mom’s Bic Classic Lady Razor because they couldn’t get the sparkle just right on their cheeks which means Edward will never ever love them (seriously Twilight: you’re asking the world to choose between necrophilia and bestiality, a choice that we’re just not prepared to even consider). As far as rolling around in the muck that your life has become, then painting some sunflowers that will end up on every suburban wall, you can’t get much more hardcore than that. Perhaps one day college kids will plaster portraits of Fail Whale on their dorm walls in an attempt to look deep.

GLEE Season 1 Watch as everyone’s favourite gifted teens sing, dance and manipulate their way into our hearts. Season one is full of intriguing moments as high school teacher Will Scheuster attempts to save the incredibly unpopular Glee Club at William McKinley High School. You’ll sympathize with Scheuster as he mentors a group of gifted performers while dealing with the devious sabotage of cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, played by the ridiculously talented Jane Lynch. You’ll cry tears of hysterical laughter as perfectionist superstar Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele, claws her way to the top, knocking down whoever gets in her way.

THE SIMPSONS Season 13 Season 13 of The Simpsons contains 22 hilarious episodes of Fox’s long-running animated series. Known for its political satire and witty commentary on family life, The Simpsons continues to be as relevant today as it was when it started decades ago. Grab a box of Milk Duds and watch as Homer and Marge raise their incredibly dysfunctional kids Bart, Lisa and Maggie. You’ll get a kick out of watching as Homer becomes a sugar bootlegger, Marge deals with her high school prom date’s tendency to stalk her, and Bart becomes a boy in a bubble. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel infinitely better about your own family.

HOUSE Season 6 Everyone’s favourite snarky doctor is back in season six of this always sharp, never dull medical drama. Season six of House follows Dr. Gregory House, played by the wonderfully snarky Hugh Laurie. Season six begins with House trying to trick his doctors into letting him out of a psychiatric hospital. House learns to deal with his problems but almost relapses after losing a patient. This season has plenty of ups and downs but throughout it all, House manages to keep his medical brilliance alive and his snide wit intact.

20

GOSSIP GIRL Season 3 The ultimate guilty pleasure show, Gossip Girl cranks up the fun and the drama this season with new friendships, bigger challenges, several broken hearts and, of course, plenty of gossip. Watch with baited breath as Nate and Serena navigate their complicated friendship, Dan and Vanessa learn how they really feel about each other, and Jenny makes the ultimate decision between being a social queen and keeping her integrity intact. You know you love it.

MAD MEN Season 3 Worth watching for the fantastic fashion alone. Curl up with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy a glimpse of the sensational sixties, when men were men and ladies always had the upper hand. Mad Men features the world of the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City. Season three follows lead character Don Draper, played by a dashing Jon Hamm, as he navigates his complicated professional and personal life.

For Al-Massri, there is an important distinction between sharing her experiences with her students and teaching them how to dance or act. “I hate to say I’m going to teach – I’m young, you know. I cannot pretend to teach people; I’m just at the beginning of my career. But I’m someone who likes sharing things and I know that maybe I have the talent of expressing things, of communicating with others,” Al-Massri said.

Ahmed Ahmed is just like us. No, really. QH shoots the breeze with this average, everyday funnyman.

J

ust Like Us almost didn’t get made. The documentary, which follows comedian Ahmed Ahmed and his international band of funny followers as they bring laughter to the Middle East, was really more of an afterthought than a well-thought out process. Ahmed certainly never planned to direct it. Days before he left for a tour of the Middle East, Ahmed’s business partner at Cross Cultural Entertainment told him he should film the tour. “I said ‘we’re leaving in four days; there’s By George Burdell no time,’ and he said ‘do it.’ In four days I found two camera guys, bought them plane tickets and booked their hotel rooms and they followed me around the Middle East for a month. At the time, we didn’t appoint anyone director,” Ahmed said. “I didn’t purposely direct this thing; it kind of happened by default.”

Ahmed’s transformation from being in front of the camera to directing the camera crew was an interesting transition. “It was hard. It was a patient process. The thing I learnt most is to surround yourself with smart

24

people, people that are smarter than you, who can take your advice and direction,” Ahmed said. Two hundred hours of footage and six months of editing later, a story formed and a documentary was born. While Ahmed envisioned the movie as a “message movie,” it turned into a comedy documentary during the editing process. Then the team went back to their original concept, which was to show Arabs and Muslims in a good light. Ahmed had frequently performed in the Middle East and was tired of people who had never travelled to the Middle East being shocked by the fact that Arabs and Muslims actually enjoy comedy. “Out of pure frustration is why I wanted to put this project together, to shut everyone up and say ‘why don’t you come over here and if you can’t come over here, watch the movie. You can go over there through the movie,’” Ahmed said. “It’s almost like a travel log or a commercial for the Middle East.”

The film may have been a last-minute decision by Ahmed and his business partner, but the ideas behind the movie have been percolating in Ahmed’s head since his Axis of Evil tour ended. “When that [tour] dissolved, I thought ‘what is comedy? Is comedy specifically for Arabs or Muslims?’”

out into the world, and start accepting different cultures into the comedy train,” Ahmed said.

QH catches up with actor Ashraf Farah during his stay in Qatar for the Doha Film Institute workshops, held in conjunction with the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.

A

spiring actors and actresses got a glimpse of what life is like in front of the lens during an acting workshop with actor Ashraf Farah, best known for playing Zaid in the award-winning film Pomegranates and Myrrh. The five-day acting workshop was one in a series of workshops hosted by the Doha Film Institute to build anticipation for the Doha Tribecca Film Festival, held in Doha Oct. 26 to 30. Farah spent five days working with 12 attendees at W Doha. He led his eager students through the entire process of acting for a film, from reading a script to engaging with the camera. The budding actors rehearsed scenes in pairs for the camera, then watched and reviewed the footage. “The whole idea is just to bring the scenes to see them through. When you watch them on the screen, you want to 26

believe what’s happening, just the idea,” Farah explained. The workshops took a more personal turn when each student shared a personal experience with the whole group. This exercise allowed the participants to become more comfortable around each other and taught them to express themselves freely, said Anne Broecker, a publicist for the Doha Film Institute. “By the time everyone left, emotions filled the air,” Broecker said. “Everyone left relieved and had a cathartic experience.” Participants also practiced monologues and performed them in front of the camera, which is easier said then done, said Farah. “My aim is easy. Still, it’s complicated just to have an actor or a couple of actors in front of the camera making a scene, just to see if it’s live and it’s work and it’s true, and to believe it,” Farah said.

He would know. The dark-haired eye candy brings 11 years of acting experience to the table. During his impressive career, Farah has worked with some of the biggest names in the Middle East, including fellow workshop leader Yasmine Al-Massri. Farah and Al-Massri connected onscreen in Pomegranates and Myrrh, in addition to both having roles in Miral. “We’re good friends,” Farah said. “[Yasmine] is a serious actress and collaborating with her was really efficient; we worked seriously and we worked hard and I think we got good results.” Farah returned to Doha for the film festival to promote Julian Schnabel’s film Miral and mingle with up-and-comers in the industry. Next up for the scruffy auteur is the television series The Drowning River, shot in Jordan. In order for him to take a role, he has to click with the character and the project, even if he never imagined himself in that role. “It has to be something that is close to me,” Farah said. “It could be a character that I didn’t even think about.” His advice for actors who are just getting started? Patience and lots of it. “Of course you need to work hard, of course you need to be talented, of course you need a lot of connections, but you need patience too,” Farah said. “Some of these things take time.”

Doha’s reign as the Arab Capital of Culture for 2010 continues as a new museum exhibition opens to celebrate the history of art, culture, architecture and literature in the famed Ottoman Empire.

A

rt lovers and history buffs will have a chance to witness a glimpse into the world of the Ottomans during the Orientalist museum’s symbolic exhibition “A Journey into the World of the Ottomans,” on display this month. A large part of the exhibition will be works of art from the Orientalist Museum’s own collection. Other pieces of art will come from the Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam and private collections.

The artworks selected illustrate the development of the Orientalism art movement from the 16th to 20th centuries, which throughout the years shaped the image of the Ottoman world in Europe, covering different genres of Orientalist art. The variety of the artworks demonstrates the appreciation of differences and similarities in European visions of the world of the Ottomans.

“Orientalism as an art movement is not tied to one particular country or school of thought because the movement was shaped by different Western cultures over centuries.” The Orientalist Museum will also host a two-day international conference in conjunction with the exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art. The conference, which takes place Nov. 28 and 29, will look at the issue of cultural exchange between Ottoman and European cultures from the 16th century to the 20th century. During the conference, “distinguished scholars from art history, cultural studies, literature, architectural history, and Ottoman history, as well as museum professionals, will explore the subject of Orientalism in art and history and examine the interconnected history of the Ottoman and European empires,” said Federica Zuccarini, public relations-coordinator for the Qatar Museums Authority. “Orientalism as an art movement is not tied to one particular country or school of thought because the movement was shaped by different Western cultures over centuries”, said Dr. Olga Nefedova, the exhibition’s curator. “Orientalism also expresses individual artists’ personal view of the Ottoman world. Orientalism, as an historical and cultural event, has been uniting various aspects of cultural life for a number of centuries – literature, fine arts, architecture, music, and philosophy – generating an exotic image within our consciousness, one that has a right to its own existence.” “A Journey into the World of the Ottomans” can be seen at the Orientalist Museum from now until Jan. 24, 2011. Admission is free for students and children under the age of 16, and QR 25 for adults. 28

QH catches up with Chris Kalachian, Qatar’s own teenage music sensation, as he prepares to drop his first album.

Q

atar’s newest music sensation Chris Kalachian is about to drop his first album this month. Often referred to as “the Arabic Justin Bieber,” this 15year-old Lebanese-Armenian rapper moved to Qatar from Lebanon at the age of two and is now one of few in Qatar’s rap scene.

Although Kalachian and Bieber both were discovered through social media outlets like Facebook and YouTube at a young age, the comparison ends there. Bieber is perfectly groomed and croons sugary pop songs to a mass audience. Kalachian, although young, is hardly baby-faced and prefers rapping to singing. However, Kalachian doesn’t mind the comparison, even if it is a bit of a stretch. “I think Justin Bieber is great,” Kalachian said. “But our music is different.” Kalachian’s older brother Greg sparked his interest in rapping at an early age. The brothers began to hone their skills through freestyle battles. His brother was also the one who first brought Kalachian to the studio, at the tender age of 12, and gave him advice on recording. “He told me this

Kalachian’s music was not the artist’s age is different [than at home]; this is serious,” Kalachian said. Kalachian took his brother’s but his unique sound. “I had never heard advice to heart. “Without him, I wouldn’t be that kind of sound before,” Methods said. “In this age, there aren’t many rappers like who I am today,” he said. him in the industry.” The rapper, who goes by the stage Kalachian spent about three months in name C.T.P., soon began to put together the studio writing and recording songs for full-length hip-hop songs, complete with the CD. The songs on the album represent a hook and chorus. “I made everything Kalachian’s view of the desert and life in smooth,” Kalachian said. The young artist then took to posting videos of his song Hello the Middle East. Kalachian draws on his personal experiences when he writes songs. online to get the word out about his music. Posting videos online of his work, along with thousands of young artists desperate for representation and recognition, could have been a waste of time. Instead, it put Kalachian on the fast-track to fame. Kalachian’s manager Max Evans originally heard about the video for his original song Hello from friends. Evans was so impressed with the video that he passed along Kalachian’s work to Cisee Methods, a record producer in Qatar. Methods liked what he heard and immediately put Kalachian in the studio to make an album. What attracted Methods to

His CD, which Kalachian refers to as a “mixed tape,” was mixed by the Oscarnominated, Grammy award-winning music mixer Bassy Bob. The CD, titled The Kid in the Desert, is due in stores in November. Kalachian, who is currently unsigned, hopes the album will draw some recognition from the music industry. Kalachian titled his first album The Kid in the Desert because he hopes to educate Westerners about what like is really like in Qatar. “People from the West, when they hear “Qatar, ‘they think desert,’” Kalachian said. “We just want to show them the desert isn’t a boring place.”

What is life like for children who live with diabetes and the parents who love them? And what happens when diabetic children can’t get the support they need at school? In honour of Diabetes Month, we take a first-hand look at a life-altering condition that is more common than it should be.

I

magine being hungry. Imagine having to poke your finger every time you are. Imagine having to give yourself a shot every time you eat. Imagine having a pump attached to your body. Imagine wanting to jog, swim, play with your children or simply walk. Now imagine having to plan each activity by asking yourself beforehand, what is my blood sugar right now and is it safe for me to play sports, to go out with my friends or to drive? People living with diabetes face these issues every day. Diabetes is the common term for several metabolic disorders in which the body no longer produces insulin or uses the insulin it produces ineffectively. It is a common condition and is characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels. How does this affect children who have diabetes? How does it affect teenagers who have diabetes? What does having diabetes mean to them? I can tell you because I know. They feel anger, frustration, sadness, depression and at times may seem rebellious and live in denial of the condition. These negative feelings are associated with the level of personal persistence needed to manage diabetes. It is hard to imagine having to eat 34

correctly all the time — the right food, in the right amount, at the right time ... and all healthy, nutritious foods. The teenage years are usually about sleepovers, parties, ordering pizza and staying out late – all things that are not conducive to good diabetes management. As a parent of a diabetic teenager, I want my daughter to lead a normal, happy and healthy life, but I often feel helpless and overwhelmed; after all, I can’t take the disease away, nor can I control everything my teenager does. Children and teens with diabetes are at risk for developing acute or short-term complications related to their disorder every day. These include hypoglycemia or low blood sugar reactions, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The scary (but inevitable) fact is that no matter what I do to try to prevent it, my daughter is going to make mistakes just like everybody else. I have to accept that. At the end of the day, what Yasmeen and I need is support. Parents of diabetic teens need to have a connection with a social network that can be there to listen and give advice and empower us to continue making sound choices. Children need that too, both at home and in school.

Tala Shawwa, Yasmeen Whitice, Schuyler Vetry

At home, parents need to learn how to help their children develop a level of responsibility and judgment that will help them be independent and self sufficient. The trick is to strike a balance between being too strict and overbearing and too lenient and uninvolved. In school, we need the administrator’s support and the help of nurses and counselors, whom must be willing to assist our children as they strive to succeed.

Photos by Jorell Legaspi

Luckily for me and all of the people of Qatar suffering from diabetes, the dedicated management and staff of Qatar Diabetes Association, led by Dr. Abdullah, director Sharud Mathis, public relations officer Awatif Hussain and senior nutritionist Katie Nahass, are well aware of the need to support both children and adults who live with this disease and are working very hard to bring major changes to Qatar. “We need a better understanding of what having diabetes means to the person who lives with this condition every day in order to improve the care we provide,” Awatiff recently told me. “My dream is to ultimately have a law in place in Qatar that would protect the rights of students with diabetes from discrimination at school. I really want things to change.” Qatar has one of the highest, if not the highest, rate of diabetes among the GCC countries due to obesity and genetic predisposition.

For the last two years, Awatiff, along with a team of doctors, nutritionists, sponsors (American Womens Association and Oryx GTL) and volunteers has been writing a comprehensive booklet that highlights an individual healthcare plan for students with diabetes for all of the schools in Qatar. The booklet, which is a part of the Rights of Students with Diabetes at School program, targets diabetes education for all school personnel but focuses primarily on nurses. This program will help foster the proper environment to allow diabetic students to succeed academically and socially. Awatiff understands that at the centre of this issue are the people with diabetes, their families and their immediate care givers. In securing an Individual Healthcare Plan to aid in the daily management of diabetes for school personnel and administrators, the program is sure to change the lives of many children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes attending universities, schools and even nurseries in Qatar. As a parent, you can sit back and cry or get angry about the opportunities your child might miss as they grow up battling this condition or you can volunteer, fight back and help change the lives of those who need it most. I choose to do something about it. I am glad I have the Qatar Diabetes Association and my good friends Awatiff and Katie by my side.

The need for medical care does not end while the child is at school. Children with diabetes require medical care as well as knowledgeable school staff to remain healthy. • Do blood sugar checks • Treat hypoglycemia with emergency sugar

• Inject insulin when necessary • Eat snacks when necessary • Eat lunch at an appropriate time and have enough time to finish the meal

• Have unrestricted access to water and the bathroom

• Participate fully in physical education and other extracurricular activities, including field trips

Restaurants are a dime a dozen in Doha. But chances are you’ve never experienced a restaurant like this. QH whipped out their favourite pair of fat pants and pulled up a chair at the new wine bar and tapas restaurant The Cellar, located in the Oryx Rotana Doha.

T

he word tapas means a wide variety of appetizers in Spanish. But as far as we’re concerned, it might as well be Spanish for “oh so good.” The yummy cuisine, which until now was vacant from the culinary scene in Doha, is known as a sociable dish because it allows a group of friends to eat a variety of delicious food over a period of several hours without having to focus solely on one giant main course. And, of course, the perfect compliment to a lovely evening of good conversation and even better food is a glass of vino.

“It’s all about the customer: talking to the customer, knowing his needs, knowing his preferences; this is what we offer in this space when it comes to wine.”

The Cellar, home of Doha’s first wine and tapas bar, knows this. That’s why the restaurant’s open floor plan includes several tables large enough to hold big groups. It’s also why the space features a wine tasting bar.

“This place is all about wine. We offer a different experience through the wide range of wines that we offer,” said Lisa Tahabsem, director of marketing and communications at the Oryx Rotana-Doha. “It’s all about the customer: talking to the customer, knowing his needs, knowing his preferences; this is what we offer in this space when it comes to wine.”

38

Guests can try a variety of wines at the wine bar before selecting and buying their own bottle at the wine market, located in The Cellar, to enjoy at the table. When customers select a bottle of wine, they also receive a wine tag that lists their selection and the chef’s selection of dishes that compliment that wine. Choose a nice bottle of Pommard Premier Cru En Lagilliere and your wine tag will tell you that the Black Angus beef carpaccio, the Australian lamb chops, or the French goat cheese is the way to go. Choose a classic bottle of Tavel Beaurevoir and you’ll find out you should feast on Italian baby buffalo mozzarella, with chicken breast skewers and the oven-baked potato tortilla.

In addition to unique Mediterranean tapas, the menu also features hearty Italian dishes, succulent beef selections and tempting desserts. For a delectable meal anytime, executive chef Reynar Muller recommends the scallops, brought in fresh once a week from the Netherlands, paired with a white or rose vino for seafood lovers. Beef eaters will swoon over the Australian Black Angus beef medallions with spicy tomato salsa. The perfect end to a night of vino and tapas? The sinfully rich mango cheesecake and a strong cup of coffee. Enjoy a three-course meal for QR 85, Saturday through Thursday. Don’t worry; we’ll lend you our fat pants.

Is there anything more delectably delicious than a fluffy cupcake generously frosted with a swirl of intensely sweet cream? QH doesn’t think so. Luckily for Qatar, the W Doha agrees with us. The high-class hotel brings this down-to-earth treat to a classier level with their newest venture, The Whisper Café.

D

oha just got a whole lot sweeter. Once a black hole for gourmet sweet treats, Doha is now home to the premiere cupcake shop The Whisper Café, located in the W Doha.

The idea to sell cupcakes is one of the hotel’s “innovative creations,” said executive chef Prakash Seetul. “We didn’t want to copy and paste what other hotels are doing. We couldn’t find any place that we could find good quality cupcakes, nice and rich, soft and moist, melt-in-your-mouth cupcakes.” In order to ensure their cupcakes will be top notch, the W Hotel brought in renowned pastry artist Stephane Treand of the Art of Pastry. Treand, originally from France but now based in southern California, has been a pastry chef for more than 30 years. 40

Treand spent weeks teaching the staff at the W Doha how to create the finest cupcakes, macaroons, entre mais, petite fours and plated desserts. He also taught a team of 10 chefs how to work on chocolate decorations and with sugar. Normally chefs have to go abroad to France to train under high-profile chefs, said Seetul. However, it is much better for the team to learn in their own kitchen, with their own equipment and local ingredients. “It’s a privilege to have a master chef in the kitchen training you. You don’t see that in most places,” Seetul said. “We are very blessed having a master pastry chef with us training the team; this is not given to everyone.” But don’t be fooled; Seetul is no stranger to delicious desserts. The chef, who has been with the W Doha

since it opened, got his start in pastries with the goal of eventually becoming an executive chef. He didn’t have the luxury of eating cupcakes during his childhood but has now fallen in love with the dessert after weeks of testing the scrumptious treats. Each freshly baked cupcake will be a work of art, featuring delicate chocolate and marzipan decorations, sinfully rich cocoa butter icing, and local ingredients, such as dates. The staff will rotate the flavours every three months, with some seasonal designs thrown in on occasion. The pastry team will keep in touch with Treand to discuss fresh ideas and new innovations for the cafe.

The pastry team has gone above and beyond to ensure that each and every one of their gourmet cupcakes reaches unprecedented levels of perfection. However, there is no specific recipe for the perfect cupcake because it all depends on individual preference, said Treand, with some people preferring light and fluffy cupcakes, and others craving dense, rich cake. For Treand, the perfect cupcake is not too heavy and presents its flavour immediately. “Something easy to eat, like a little cloud,” Treand said. He often craves chocolate but other times he likes a light dessert with fruit. The Whisper Café will provide a place to sit and relax with a cup of tea and a sinful dessert. The setup is modern, with couches, a smoking area and a beautiful display case full of luscious pastries. In addition to pastries, the Whisper Café will offer some light meal choices such as salads and sandwiches. While working with Treand, the pastry team tried various experiments, such as creating a flourless chocolate cake with oldfashioned chocolate mousse and praline crunch. The Whisper Café will open during the beginning of November at the W Doha. For more information, call W Doha at 4453-5000.

SPOTLIGHT ON FOOD

We’ve never met an Italian who doesn’t know how to cook. In Italy, food is revered as an art form, not just a way to fill your stomach. That’s why QH can’t wait for the opening of Carluccio’s, a restaurant and store offering authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant is scheduled to open in late 2010. What are some of the best items to order for lunch and dinner? Carluccio’s is not just an evening dining location but an all-day venue. Not only is it great for breakfast with items such as colazione magnifica (scrambled eggs with sautéed mushrooms, tomato and toasted ciabatta) but also for lunch time, as we have many salads and antipasti on the menu with other lighter bites. Arancini di Riso Siciliani is a favourite lunchtime choice from the Sicilian landscape. The golden savoury balls are prepared with a light risotto base to make arancini, with two variations on the filling: rich ragu and simple mozzarella. Carluccio’s also has a fabulous deli counter that stocks freshly prepared salads, Panini’s and sandwiches. The food store means customers can create their favourite Carluccio’s dishes in their home from the wide range of pastas, sauces and goods available. For the evening customers can choose from a variety of exciting dishes such as Linguine ai Frutti di Mare a fabulous linguini pasta made fresh on the premises with succulent mixed seafood, chili, garlic and herbs or Ravioli Ricotta e Spinaci beautifully hand- made ricotta in delicate ravioli parcels.

42

What sets Carluccio’s apart from other restaurants? What makes it special? Carluccio’s restaurant offers great value for money with everything from breakfasts and morning coffees through to light meals, lunches and dinners. The specials menu in the restaurant changes frequently and often incorporates items in the foodstore. At Carluccio’s you can arrive for breakfast, afternoon coffee, dinner and then buy your shopping in the foodstore or your lunch for work in the deli! We all know physical activity keeps us healthy and strong. But who actually has the time to work out? QH learns how to work fitness into everyday life from wellness specialist Bryan Hoare, who brings his own style of personal training to Six Senses Spa at the Sharq Village and Spa.

E

veryone wants to be healthy. We all know we should exercise regularly, eat properly and get the proper amount of sleep. So if we all know that, why do so many of us break these rules for healthy living? A lack of motivation and free time are often the biggest factors, leading many people to simply leave exercise out of their daily routines. Others don’t know how to workout properly or don’t have access to a gym. That’s where wellness specialist Bryan Hoare comes in. Hoare, the former director of wellness at Six Senses Destination Spa in Phuket, will host personal training sessions and weekly fitness classes at the Six Senses Spa in Doha from Nov. 18 to Dec. 20. In order to be fit and healthy, people need to first decide that they want to make a lifestyle change. “It’s like 46

anything; to change you have to make a commitment,” Hoare said. “The main principle behind making a commitment is how much you want it, how much you desire it, what’s your vision, what’s your long-term goal. A lot of people get lost on the last point. They want to lose weight or they want to be fit but they don’t see a long-term evolution.” Hoare believes the biggest challenge for most people is finding time to work out and not feeling self conscious when working out in front of others. However, people can’t say they don’t have enough time to commit to fitness because each person chooses how they allot their time, said Hoare. If a confidence crisis is stopping you from hitting the elliptical trainer at your local gym, Hoare suggests bringing a friend to the gym to increase confidence. But what about those of us that truly loathe the gym? Don’t worry; anyone who is simply too busy or too fabulous to be seen at the gym in sweat pants can also

HEALTH & WELLNESS

find ways to increase their fitness levels. Hoare recommends squeezing regular workouts into your life by exercising at home. Anyone can work out at home with only a few pieces of equipment, such as a mat, fitness ball, resistance bands, weights and a bench or step. Hoare recommends using kettle bells for weights because they are more versatile than dumb bells.

“It takes awhile to find a new balance.”

Of course, before you start converting your living room into a gym or lugging kettle bells up six flights of stairs, you should learn the proper techniques for the exercises you’ll be doing. The best way to do that? Hire a personal trainer, even if it’s only for one session. Hoare creates a workout and wellness program for each of his clients. Clients do three to four personal sessions with Hoare, then work off of a custom-designed program for six months. Hoare also provides tips for ways to add variety to a work out program. A simple way to keep your exercise routine from becoming mundane is to remember the five principles of exercise: frequency, intensity, time, type and technique (FITTT). An individual can adapt any of those five areas to evolve and improve their exercise program, said Hoare. Another key element of fitness is the idea of overload. “You constantly have to bring your body through an overload so it’s evolving, advancing and changing,” Hoare said.

Photos by Brent T Madison

Fitness junkies must find a balance between overload and recovery in order to build fitness. “You have to overload yourself using the program so that you’re putting your body under enough pressure, resistance and enough of a challenge so it has to adapt itself so it can prepare itself for the next time,” Hoare said. For those people who aren’t ready to do the mountain range level on the treadmill there are simple ways to burn a few extra calories a day. “The main thing you can do is actually being active during the day,” Hoare said. He suggests taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking far away from buildings, or getting off the couch to change the

television channel by hand instead of using a remote. All of these little extra bursts of fitness can help you burn an extra 10 calories a day. If you burn an additional 10 calories a day each day for a year, you’ll lose about one pound of fat, said Hoare. While that amount of unconscious energy expenditure may not be huge, it’s a step in the right direction on the path to becoming more active. Hoare also recommends trying to squeeze in short workouts throughout the day if a long work out feels overwhelming. When it comes to fitness, “it’s not all or nothing,” Hoare said. “You choose what you do. Small changes make a big difference in the long run.” A good exercise program to start with involves working out for 45 minutes two days a week doing a variety of exercises. People should eventually work up to exercising five days a week for 55 minutes at a higher intensity, said Hoare. Frustrated that your workout hasn’t gotten you a bikini body yet? Be patient and continue tweaking the five FITTT principles, said Hoare. “People put on weight over a period of years so it takes a lifestyle change to correct it,” Hoare said. He advises not weighing yourself every day. Instead, pay attention to how your clothes fit on your body. “The body doesn’t react right away,” Hoare said. “It takes awhile to find a new balance.”

Hoare will offer the following private programs and weekly fitness classes during his time at Six Sense Spa. Private Programs: Swimming Lessons Learn To Swim / Stroke Improvement Triathlon Specific Training Personal Training

Weekly Fitness Classes: Bootcamp Saturdays and Mondays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Abs Blaster Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Kettle bells Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information, prices and booking, call the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa at 4425-6999.

QH learns how to bend, twist and stretch our bodies, all while remembering to breathe, from yoga expert Dr. Pramod Kumar during his stay in Doha. Don’t worry if you missed his visit; we scooped up all his tips on how to live a healthier, stress-free life.

D

r. Pramod Kumar wants you to breathe.

The yoga guru, who hails from South Goa, India, firmly believes that breathing is the key to managing stress and staying healthy. “Stress comes from shallow breaths. If you can correct that, you can manage any kind of stress,” Kumar said. When an individual doesn’t breathe properly, their cells start to deteriorate, leading to problems in the body and mind. “Body and breathe have to go hand in hand,” Kumar said. “If your body and breathe are balanced, your mind will be aligned.” 48

Kumar, the spa manager of Sereno Spa at the Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa in South Goa, India, spent two weeks working with the staff at Jaula Spa at the Grand Hyatt Doha in Qatar in order to teach them some of his famous massage techniques. Kumar trained the spa staff to properly perform the Udwarthanam, a special therapeutic massage that helps tone and slim the body; the Synchronized Abhyanga Massage, a fourhanded Indian massage performed by two therapists; Choornaswedam, a full-body massage involving a heated sack full of ginger, black pepper, rice powder, garlic powder, cumin and fennel; and the Indian Head

Massage, a therapy based on alternative medicine practices. In India, Kumar offers lifestyle analysis and consultations for guests, while also teaching stress relief techniques. Learning proper breathing techniques goes hand-in-hand with Kumar’s other lifestyle secret – yoga. Yoga is an excellent way to rid the body of stress and pain, said Kumar, who has a bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery degree and is a certified yoga instructor. It is best to practice yoga in the morning and breathing techniques both during the day and at night, said Kumar, who has been practicing yoga since childhood. However, yoga should not be just another workout squeezed into your day, said Kumar. “Don’t practice it as a routine. Implement it into your lifestyle,” Kumar said.

Step 2: Inhale. Bend backwards, stretching your arms back over your head.

Step 5: While exhaling, move your right leg backward until both feet are together. Keep back straight and arms outstretched in plank position.

Step 6: Continue to exhale. Lower your arms and body to the floor, making sure to keep your abdomen from touching the ground.

The easiest way to do this? Sun Salutations. Kumar swears by this 12-step yoga routine. “I would recommend everyone practice sun salutations 15 minutes a day,” Kumar said. (See our handy QH Sun Salutation guide for more information on how to do this).

Everyone with a fashion for passion waited with baited breath for the Ed Hardy fashion show at W Doha last month. QH not only enjoyed the view from the sidelines but also caught up with Ed Hardy promoter Jeremy Jackson backstage.

T

he Ed Hardy fashion show is late. The fashion voyeurs are getting antsy. Jeremy Jackson is nowhere in site.

I’m at the W Doha waiting for my first fashion show in Doha to start. I wait a very long time. I sit and prepare myself for the inevitable. I expect to hate the line.

Then came Jeremy Jackson. Jackson, best known for his role on Baywatch, is an avid promoter of the Ed Hardy brand. The partnership started when Christian Audigier, the designer behind Ed Hardy, created an outfit for Jackson for an awards show. The outfit was a smash hit with the jet set crowd and the two fashion lovers formed a tight bond. Jackson now travels the globe promoting Ed Hardy, in addition to building his fitness empire.

But I don’t. Instead, I’m instantly swept away in a sea of bright lights and funky models wearing smoking hot clothes. Each model is smiling. Some of the models even dance, shaking up the tradition of tight-faced, bored, lemonsucking models.

While Jackson loves wearing pieces from the Ed Hardy line, he also has his own views on fashion. When it comes to clothes, Jackson prefers to keep it simple. “I don’t really follow trends or fashion. I pick up a little bit of everything. Personally, I used to be wild but now I’m just more classic,” said the well-spoken actor.

The Ed Hardy brand features a variety of influences, The clothes are neither gaudy, nor obnoxious. Instead, they are fun. If Jackson has his way, the brand will soon be full of more basic staples for everyday wear. “I would add more plain stuff [to the line],” Jackson said. “Totally plain [and] labeless, with Ed Hardy on the inside or somewhere on the stitch. At the moment, there is still plenty to love about the new line. The recent Ed Hardy show at Wahm in W Doha featured clothing that was both classy and sassy. Hands down, the best item in the line is the leggings. The leggings are popular because of their versatility. “The new leggings are very cool. They have a great fit and a lot of buttons down at the bottom. They’re something you could wear anywhere, not just into a club,” Jackson said. So will the day come when Jackson leaves the Ed Hardy brand behind and branches out into the fashion world with his own line? According to Jackson, it’s not in the cards anytime in the near future. “There’s been a lot of discussion about that. I’ve had some

offers to do a fashion line or a reality show. But right now, for me, my assistants kind of do everything. For an extravagant event like this I get to come out and have a good time but most of my attention and time is on acting class, the gym, L.A., getting good rest, all that kind of stuff,” Jackson said. “It might be somewhere down the line but not right now.” If Jackson does ever create his own fashion line, be prepared for a bit of a shock during his shows. During an interview after the Ed Hardy show in Doha, Jackson discussed the possibility of creating a tear-away Abaya with Velcro, designed to be ripped off on the catwalk. “I like shock factor, you know, make everyone think [the model] is going to be naked underneath but really it’s a skintight jumpsuit underneath or a map of the world or something,” Jackson said. Then the actor grinned and remembered his early pledge to simplicity and promised to keep it classy. “I think there are ways to do everything with taste.”

The Asian Cup is approaching fast. And preparations for the World Cup 2022 aren’t far away if Qatar’s bid to host the event is successful. Yes, professional football is kind of a big deal here in Qatar. But where does football stand locally and how does it rate on the world stage?

I

t’s not hard to notice the growing popularity of football in Qatar. Like all fans, Qataris believe their teams are up there with the best. The players and coaches have a slightly more guarded response, but are still very positive. Qatar’s football legacy can be traced back to its first club, Al Ahli, which formed in 1950. Today there are 12 clubs in the Qatar Stars League, Qatar’s premier league. The Second League is comprised of six additional teams.

Ramze Adel, 33, is the striker and captain of the Al Wakra team. Originally of Moroccan and Dutch extraction, Adel played for the Netherlands for 11 years. He is now in his fourth year in Qatar. “After ten years I needed a change and some Moroccans who were here told me about Qatar. I wanted to give something back so I came here,” Adel said. According to Adel, the standards for football in Qatar are increasing steadily. “Every year the competition increases. There are better professionals and better coaches and now every team has a stadium,” Adel said.

Each club has a squad of 20 to 30 players, including a maximum of four professionals – three from Europe and one from the region. The coaches are considered some of the best, and include Brazilians, Argentinians and Europeans. 58

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS

Sebastian Lazaroni, who coaches Qatar Sports Club, was the coach of the Brazilian team at the World Cup in Italy in 1990. Lazaroni also came to Qatar for a challenge. “This is my third season in Qatar and every year the league becomes better,” Lazaroni said. “The country loves football; all of the Middle East loves football.” Lazaroni sees similarities between his native Brazil and Qatar. “The players want to work and they dream to be the best,” Lazaroni said. “Each club has a gym, a field and good facilities.” He believes it will take time to reach the top international standards. “I work with quality kids and we are moving from amateur to professionals,” Lazaroni said. “It just needs one generation with good quality to be very professional.” In addition to the Qatar Stars League, there is a pool of talent being groomed in the U19, U16 and Aspire Teams. Adel and Larazoni agreed that big money is being invested in football and that the Olympic Committee is taking a leading role in promoting the sport. The players are well paid and, in general, often earn more than their European counterparts. Sponsorship is not a problem either; several well known companies and Al Jazeera are happy to support Qatar’s football. If there is a weakness in Qatar’s football strategy, it’s that the stadiums aren’t full. There are plenty of fans in Qatar but most tend to watch the games on television. Adnan Dirjal is another international football coach. Previously a captain of the Iraqi national team and their coach for five years, he now coaches Al Wakra. Dirjal believes the standard for football in Qatar is high. “The money for the stadiums, coaching and everything is very high,” Dirjal

said. “Competition between the teams is fierce and whereas the top two teams used to be clear of the rest they are no longer pulling away.” The results are a lot closer this year and, as of one-third of the way into the 21 rounds of the league, there are only a few points separating most teams with Al Arabi leading Lekhiwa and Qatar Sports Club by a single point. The league will continue throughout the winter with the Heir Apparent Cup being held on April 24, 2011. The season will culminate with The Emir’s Cup on May 15, 2011. At an international level, the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 Finals, held every four years, will be hosted in Qatar. The top 16 Asian national teams will battle it out from January 7 to 29, 2011. If the present trajectory can be maintained there is no reason why Qatar can’t improve on its FIFA ranking of 104. Wherever you are in the world, football in Qatar will be worth watching. 59

COLOUR SCOPE

Put some indigo in your life when you want: • to focus on personal issues • to develop intuition • to step outside of everyday life By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

While blue is the color of communication, indigo has the energy to increase personal thought, provide profound insights and create instant understandings. While blue can be fast, Indigo is almost instantaneous. When I recently toyed with the idea of repainting my living room, I spoke to Dewey Sadka, creator of the Dewey Colour System, about my colour of choice, Indigo-blue. While I could visualize the room in a dazzling Indigo shade, Dewey had an earful to say about the subject. For me, blue was simply blue, but Dewey advised otherwise. “What most of us call blue, ironically, is Indigo-blue with red. Blue phones, children’s toys, jeans, for example, are almost always indigo, not blue. Not a surprising fact, when you consider that Indigo was the favorite color in our survey of 5,000 participants (North America). So where was blue? It was number two,” Dewey advised. “Consider using dreamy, more contemplative blue hues in rooms where you want to make your passions your goals. However, use action-oriented Indigo shades to stimulate more enterprising, thoughprovoking, conversations.”

After hearing that, my decision was easy! What makes the energy behind both colours so different? The difference between blue and Indigo is red. Indigo is a combination of deep blue and red and therefore holds the attributes of both these colors. Red is vibrant and passionate; and while blue is calming, allowing you to focus.

Colour compliments for Indigo are gold, brown, orange, yellow, white, red-orange and lime green. Dewey’s advice for decorating the perfect room is to “paint the walls a royal blue and the ceiling a lighter colour, like Mist. Make the trim a high gloss white. Buy a Platinum (light grey) sofa and toss cobalt blue and creamy orange pillows on it. Compliment the room with Sienna-coloured leather chairs and bronze accessories and you will feel the positive energy every day.“ Indigo is the colour of intuition, perception, introspection and meditation. It is said to help achieve a deeper level of consciousness. Want to know the colour shade of Dewey’s dining room? Indigo!

for a new and interesting way of viewing a problem

• solitude and inner communication

After discussing the shade of Indigo that would work best in my living room, Dewey gave me some more colour personality advice for selecting the perfect colour shade. Here are some of his suggestions:

• Indigo or Cornflower

These shades encourage you to create workable plans. Using them in a space will challenge you to plan ahead, avoid mistakes and orchestrate a more exciting future.

• Periwinkle or Mist (indigo with white)

These soft shades encourage you to re-consider how to make your dreams come true. Using these enriching blue shades provokes an optimistic problem-solving approach towards concerns and dilemmas.

• Sienna or Dusty Rose (indigo with brown)

These grounding shades encourage you to slow down, map out an action plan, and search for more practical solutions. Using these shades in a space creates a sharp awareness of exactly what needs to be done.

• Cobalt or Royal Blue (indigo with black)

These mysterious shades dig deep to evoke a more contemplative, strategic daily-plan. Use them to eliminate self-doubt and unearth a more determined, disciplined you.

The more you like indigo, you like to plan and create

The less you like indigo,

you live in the moment
