If you like your art a little more two dimensional, don’t miss the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. The newly formed Doha Film Institute kicks off the second annual festival in style- we’ve got a sneak peek at the top 14 films you can’t miss this year! If you need to shake off the summer doldrums, we’ve also caught up with the hottest DJs hitting the sand this month, just in case you needed another reason to think beach parties were the best part of fall in Qatar! On a more serious note, October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We’ve partnered with Think Pink Qatar to bring you the most up-to-date information on the disease and what you can do, right here at home, to help. And because we strive to be the go-to source for the news you need to know, we’ve caught up with a compound on the outskirts of the city who’s residents are doing their part to prepare for the zombie apocalypse. They gave us some helpful hints to help you survive zombigedden this Halloween!

QH ANNIVERSARY

Happy Birthday To Us! An Unabashed Love Letter to Ourselves QH Magazine turns one this year! 12 issues in, we feel like the proud parents watching our little pumpkin go off to Kindergarten, lunchbox stuffed with fois gras, with strict instructions not to stab the other children with the safety scissors. It’s been one heck of a year. We started with a small staff, fueled by the creative genius of panic, deadlines, an unhealthy love of hyperbole and vast amounts of caffeine. I can’t help but think about that first Eid, when I spent it twirling in my desk chair at 3 a.m. next to Jorell Legaspi, then Creative Director, and Paolo Tan, our reigning Graphic Design maestro, creating this Frankenstein-infant and hoping Doha would love it as much as we did. We’ve interviewed authors and politicians, DJs and chefs. We ticked off Serena Williams caught up with Hillary Clinton, slipped the phrase ‘awesome sauce’ into print and hob knobbed with cinema glitterati. I personally ate weirder things and allowed my body to be scrubbed, rubbed, waxed, pummeled and generally altered than ever before, all so I could write about it in the magazine. I listened to an entire Adam Lambert CD for QH. Twice. It was a long year – the KFC delivery guys came to know us far too well, as for a while they were the only ones able to deliver to our office. Jay Panganiban, my mental external hard drive, sacrificed our joint office to test run multiple Arabic perfume samples. Jaya, our distribution ninja, made sure we actually showed up where we were meant to and Lanie’s newborn baby will probably know how to file before he knows how to walk, since were lost without her organizational prowess. I had to threaten to telephone Marketing-Guru Moona’s husband to make her stay home when she got sick and Jorell acquired an uncanny ability to read all of our minds, without a tinfoil hat. Resistance was futile. We were hooked on QH.

As we blow out the candles on our hypothetical birthday cake (seriously, could someone send us some cake? We like cake), it all seems easy now. Our team has changed, expanded, shrunk and added new faces, but it’s still QH. Looking back, it wouldn’t have been the same place without Lily Allen singalongs, Marketing ManiaThursday Sugar Afternoons, a pagination done in post-its on the back of a door, an impeccable Miranda Priestly imitation. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was done with style (at least that’s how I explain my continued commitment to my flip flops). And that’s what makes this magazine really special: the energy, the excitement, and the Fatal-Attraction style obsessive love we have for it. We hope you can see it in these pages. That’s what makes it so hard to leave. We’ve lost staff members as the year has gone on, each one gone in a haze of tears and most with salmon-upstream tendencies to come back in some capacity (I’m looking at you Chantal, Nathy, Devi and Ahmad). I’m just the latest. This magazine may have started as the sum of the people who made it, but it’s grown to be so much more than that, and it’s time for me and the brand to move on. Like proud parents on that first day of Kindergarten I can look back at QH galloping off to a sticky, glittery future with just a little bit of sadness and a whole lot of pride. For me, it’s that melancholy moment on Christmas morning when all the presents have been opened up, the room is littered with torn wrapping paper, and you’re just a little bit sad because something is ending till next year. So I’m passing it over to Sydnee, for whom the presents are still wrapped, to nurture and change and help grow and develop until it’s a productive member of society ready for metaphorical First Grade and long division.

QH RECOMMENDS we’re It’s our birthday and we’ll be nerdy if we want to! This month invited. throwing a party (which may be in our pants) and you’re all wacky gifts. We’d especially like to thank the Internet for our random and

My Roommate Haunts My Dreams

Toddlers and Hilarity We stumbled across Toddlers and Tiaras on Youtube one day and were instantly hooked. The glitter, the gowns, the makeup and the ever-increasing-insize hair: on three year olds. Based in the world of toddler and child beauty pageants, it’s like a car accident you can’t look away from- a glittery, twangy car accident. As the girls strut up and down the stage, and their mothers obsess about spray tans for their two-year-old and ‘flippers’- false teeth- to mask gap toothed kiddy smiles, we’re appalled, we’re amused, we’re disgusted... and we really wish our mothers had strapped a crinoline on us as children so we could be just that glittery too! Most episodes lurk on Youtube.

Doha is the land of flat shares and roommates, and so we’re frankly surprised it’s taken us this long to discover www.myveryworstroommate.com. Billed as dispatches from Home Sweet Hell, it’s a running blog of horrific roommate stories that will make the last time your flatmate licked your cheese seem like child’s play. Suddenly, we’re very very grateful our roommates are at least mildly normal (or so they claim. We’ve got our eyes on them. They have been warned).

Hyperbole ahoy! There is nothing we love so much as a good bout of MS Paint. This blog, written by a decided non-grownup and illustrated like a squirrel on PCP had access to a computer, makes us snicker and smile and face palm ourselves when we realize that that, right there, is why we can’t keep our rooms clean. With topics from The Sneaky Hate Spiral to How a Fish Destroyed her Childhood and even an attempt at co-opting the Internet into creating Mandatory Sex Parties, it’s a leap headlong down the rabbit hole and we love it. Check it out at www.hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com

Savage Excellence

Biff Awesome We admit it, somewhere in the recesses of our repressed tween brains lies an affinity for quasi Punk. And while we may have shed the longing for safety pins through our eyebrows and musicians who can’t play their instruments yelling at us, Biff Naked still is firmly implanted in our Itunes. With harder rhythms and a driving beat, she still can actually sing and makes Kelly Clarkson look like a hippy fluffy bunny in comparison. We’re also sort of jonesed she’s a Vegan from Vancouver, if only for alliteration reasons. Check her out on Itunes.

Ann Landers is a filthy liar. But where she and Dear Abby failed us, Dan Savage came to comfort us in a sweaty awkward embrace. His column, Savage Love, is a frank, honest, and funny look at love and relationships, with none of the cavity inducing sugar dunking of more ‘traditional’ advice columnists. He goes beyond ‘why doesn’t he love me’ to answer ‘why does he want to put maple syrup behind my ears’ (we wish we could make up that kind of comedy gold). Plus he makes up words more than we do, which is incredibly disturbing and yet endearing. Check out his weekly column at www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove.

QH RECOMMENDS

October’s buzzing with new and exciting things, so this month we bring you our Top Three Picks for the hottest new venues to get you hopping!

Sweet Mother of Fries! We’re mildly addicted to anything in potato form, so it’s no surprise that the new Belgian Café at the InterContinental has won our hearts. Hearty bar nibbles and a full restaurant menu (did we mention the potatoes?), combined with traditional-yet-funky beverage choices and a wood-paneled pub atmosphere has convinced us to never call it a ‘French’ fry again!

Delicious Duplication We’ve long been a fan of Al Mourjan, the fabulous Lebanese restaurant on the Corniche, and now that they’ve opened the doors of their second restaurant in the Souq Waqif, we’re chomping at the bit to get inside and chomp on something a little tastier. With a luxuriant atmosphere closer to Versailles than the usual Souq fare, it’s a change of pace to go along with the change in weather.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

Global DJs paint the town white this month with special performances by Markus Schulz and Armin Van Buuren! We caught up with Markus to find out why this is an event not to be missed. QH: How did you get started?

By George Burdell

Markus: As a DJ, it all came about through the breakdance scene, really over the course of a single night! The crew that I was breakdancing with in the States, we started throwing parties. The first one came up, we’d all been practicing, and we were all supposed to spin for an hour each. I kicked off and when it came time for the next guy to come on, every single one of them had vanished! I wound up spinning the entire night and the DJ in me was well and truly born. QH: What’s it like to perform? What’s going through your mind while you do it? Markus: I’m usually thinking: ‘man, there are really a lot of people out there!’ You think about an enormous amount while you’re up there, there’s really no limit to it. Any DJ worth their salt is working three or four tracks ahead of what he has on the decks at the time. You have to plot a course for a set and that involves taking it in a number of different musical directions. I mix in-key too, which is basically DJ alchemy for keeping the energy level of the crowd up.

16 OCT 2010d.indd 16

9/29/10 5:46:23 PM

SPOTLIGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT

QH: Is it different to perform in the Middle East? Markus: Sure, but you can say the same for almost any country. It’s what makes traveling the world and DJing in countries such an endlessly fascinating thing to do. QH: How would you describe your music? Markus: A deeper sound of trance. I’ve never really been into the super, over-the-top trance sound, I’ve always been into the darker, groovier, almost house grooves but I like more melodies so my sound has always been housey grooves with trancey melodies. I think that’s the Markus Schulz sound. If you combine that with big dark dirty basslines, there you go, that’s it, the Markus Schulz sound. QH: You have a new album, ‘Do You Dream’, out. How did that happen? Markus: There comes a period, typically about a year after the release of your last artist album, when you start thinking about where and when you’d like to go again. I supposed that’s the ‘acorn’ moment. Then it’s an 18-month to 2-year period into which you once again pour your heart and soul into creating something that you love, and you hope that others will do likewise!

QH:: You share the spotlight with some vocal guests on the new album. What was that like? Markus: When you have that long a period between your albums it’s plenty of time to hear many other vocalists singing on other tracks. When you do, you either think to yourself ‘I like that voice but I’m not sure it’s right for what I want to do’ or ‘hey, that sounds great! I think I’d like to work with that person’. That was very much the case for people like Susana, Jennifer Rene and Ana Criado, who all sang on ‘Do You Dream?‘. QH: What’s next for you - big plans for the future? Markus: A lot man, a real lot. Unfortunately at the moment there’s very little I can talk about! I’m always getting hollered at for jumping the gun and talking about things that I’m excited about! All I can say is that there will be a new city compilation very early in the 2011. We did Las Vegas this year and I’m just as pumped up about our 2011 destination. Watch this space, I guess!

et in Vietnam in the 70s, it’s the story of an American G.I., Chris, and the Vietnamese orphan, Kim, he falls in love with.

“It’s in a whole different level of musical. I mean its theatre with a capital ‘T’,” said Nick Mitchell, who plays Chris. “The intensity of emotions is incredible, and the music is extraordinarily beautiful and challenging.” With spectacular special effects, it’s the 10th longest running show on Broadway and has become one of the seminal productions in a new kind of musical theatre that tugs at the heartstrings with controversy and beautiful songs. Influenced by the opera ‘Madam Butterfly’, itself one of the most performed operas in the world, the show talks about race, culture, dreams and the choices we make- with saxophones.

“I think it treats the subject of the Vietnam War very well. It’s a theme that unfortunately we’ve seen happen again and again in other wars. It’s a piece that hasn’t really aged, it’s very timely,” said Mitchell. “I think (it will resonate). Ultimately it’s a love story, and that’s a timeless thing.” It’s also one of the only shows to showcase Asian actors. The first Kim was played by Lea Salonga, a Filipino actress. “For me there’s a personal accomplishment attached to this show. Ever since Miss Saigon came out about 16 years ago I’ve wanted to play the role of Kim. In many ways this is a dream come true for me. I felt very connected to this show, especially, because in Musical Theatre there are “And it’s not necessarily very few shows that showcase about the Vietnam War: it’s an Asian woman,” said Mia Buchignani, who plays Kim in a love story, and it’s about the Doha production. “And as an times of desperation and Asian woman, this is a chance to actually be showcased on finding love in the darkest stage. Asian women are in the of times, and sacrifice. And theatre, they’re alive and well in the theatre, but this is a role I think there are elements dedicated solely to an Asian of this show that probably woman, and I feel honored to play this role.”

everyone can relate to in one shape or form.”

While some changes to the admittedly dark and challenging show had to be made to get it to the stage in Doha, Angela Walton, director and head of Centre Stage Musical Theater, says they’ve made those changes as seamless as possible. They’ve also welcomed the Doha community into it – with a live orchestra and a cast and crew of over 100 people from around 20 24

They’ve also managed a level of realism, thanks to the multicultural nature of Doha, that many amateur groups in other parts of the world would envy: many of the costumes were actually purchased in Vietnam and Thailand, including the American military uniforms the producer found in Thailand, after failing to find coats from the right era in the States. But while it may be amateur theatre, it sounds anything but – Buchignani is a professional singer from San Francisco, and brings her operatic pipes to kick fans of Glee and High School Musical to the curb with what a real show should sound like. Mitchell says it’s the power of the music, and the story, that shines through, whether people like musical theatre or not, or understand that period of history.

“There’s a truth to this story as well. It’s a story that’s been relived especially during times of war, and I think there’s a reality that a lot of people can maybe relate to, or understand,” he said. “And it’s not necessarily about the Vietnam War: it’s a love story, and it’s about times of desperation and finding love in the darkest of times, and sacrifice. And I think there are elements of this show that probably everyone can relate to in one shape or form.” The show hits Doha on October 13th till the 23rd at the Doha College’s New Theatre. Tickets are QR 100 for the first four rows, QR 50 for the rest, and can be purchased at The One in Landmark and Villaggio. SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here in Qatar, Think Pink Qatar is focused on raising awareness of breast cancer. This year the organization is concentrating on spreading awareness of breast cancer in men. Who Gets Breast Cancer?

What is Breast Cancer?

Interestingly enough, Breast cancer occurs in both men and women, although the disease is approximately 100 times more likely to strike women.

Cancer happens when the body’s cells become abnormal and begin to divide rapidly. Healthy cells divide in an orderly fashion when needed. Cancerous cells grow out of control and form excess tissue in the body, which become tumors. Breast cancer usually forms in the breast’s milk ducts, which carry milk to the nipple, and lobules (glands that produce milk). Breast cancer tumors are usually found through mammograms but are sometimes detected by an MRI. 80 per cent of breast cancer tumors are benign. Benign breast tumors are not life-threatening.

Breast Cancer Facts If a woman has a mother, sister, daughter or two or more close relatives who have had breast cancer, she has a higher risk for developing the disease. Women who begin menstruating at an early age (under 12) are more likely to develop breast cancer as well. Women who have their first pregnancy at a later age (after 35) or never have children have a higher than average risk of getting breast cancer. Using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can increase your chance of developing breast cancer compared to women who have never used postmenopausal HRT.

Did You Know? Men who develop breast cancer are, on average, diagnosed between the ages of 60 and 70, although the disease can occur in younger men. Men who suffer from chronic alcholism, chonic liver disease and obesity are at a higher risk for devloping breast cancer at anytime.

The Breast Cancer Gene We’ve all heard of the breast cancer genes but did you know men can also be born with BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes? Anyone who inherits the altered genes has a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Scientists believe that about five-to-10 per cent of all breast cancers are due to genetic mutations.

Did You Know? Breast cancer is the third most common cancer in women in Qatar, after cervical and lung cancer.

Early Detection Early detection of breast cancer improves the odds that treatment will be successful. The Qatar National Cancer Society recommends women over the age of 35 go to their doctor for yearly breast examinations.

Fact or Fiction? Using oral contraceptives increases your risk of developing breast cancer. Answer: Fiction. Data shows that using the Pill did not significantly increase the chance of getting breast cancer in women ages 35 to 64. Men with breast cancer are more likely to die than women. Answer: Fiction. Although it was once thought that men with breast cancer had a poorer prognosis, recent studies show that men and women have similar chances for survival. However, men often do not get diagnosed as early as women.

What You Can Do There are several breast cancer fundraisers in Qatar. Think Pink Qatar holds events each year, including the We Walk to Live Breast Cancer Walk, to raise money for the Qatar National Cancer Society. The We Walk to Live Breast Cancer Walk takes place Friday, October 29, 2010, on the Doha Corniche. For more information call +974 4447-8128.

Once Upon Our Time Unfolding like a storybook tale, this documentary traces two years in the life of 15-year-old Tunisian violin prodigy Anas Romdhani, who originally had no money with which to take lessons. Covering his discovery and mentoring by renowned violinists, he enrolls at a prestigious London music academy, becomes an international sensation and tours the world.

Shahada Set in modern Berlin, the fates of three young German-born Muslims collide as they struggle to find their place between faith and modern life in contemporary western society, caught at a crossroads where alluring liberated lifestyles conflict with deeply-rooted traditions.

Man Without a Cellphone In this endearing comedy about Palestinian- Israeli youth, director Sameh Zoabi introduces viewers to the twenty something slackers who find themselves caught between angry parents and suspicious Israelis, when all they really want to do is have fun, hang out and pick up girls. Politics aren’t completely out of the picture, but the engaging and lively personalities shine foremost in this winning, good-natured tale.

Bhutto Political biopics too often fall into either hagiography or demonization, extremes mostly avoided by this documentary about the late Benazir Bhutto, the first woman elected to rule a Muslim nation. Her life’s journey is viewed in a more reasoned tone here, balanced considerably through sharp editing, striking visuals and interviews with both family and foes.

Tamara Drewe A young newspaper columnist returns to her British village where her childhood house is being prepared for sale in this skillful adaption of the popular cartoon strip by the same name. Funny and sharp, it’s the story of someone caught between home and who they want to be, with chick-lit bestsellers, nosey neighbors, and a nose job thrown into the mix.

Certified Copy A romance that takes you on a surreal twist and turn journey. An English author’s latest book, ‘Certified Copy’, forms the backbone of the story, looking at the nature of reality. Is a copy any less valuable if you don’t know it’s a copy? Combining a love story with literature, it’s a movie that will leave you questioning what you know and why you know it.

The Mountain Awash with haunting black-andwhite images, The Mountain is a journey into the mind of a man as he spends a month in isolation at a desolate hotel. A near silent picture, this portrayal of harsh reality mixed with vivid dreamscapes will leave viewers filled with wonder about the crossroads of fact and fantasy.

The Light Thief A helpful electrician known as “Svetake” or “Mr. Light” brings illumination of all sorts to the small village caught in the midst of a revolution against a totalitarian State. With his dreams of having a son and providing cheap wind power, the electrician makes strong connections in his attempt to rewire the economic power structure of his community.

Hawi A prisoner is released on a mission to retrieve a set of documents. A man roams the city streets towing his sickly horse behind him. A group of singers gathers to compose songs. In this portrait of modern Alexandria, themes of human loss and displacement take center stage in place of a clearly defined story arc.

SPOTLIGHT ON KNOWLEDGE

By Jessica Davey-Quantick

With Halloween at the end of October, I‘ve asked some local community experts how they’re preparing for a zombie uprisings, and what you can do to make sure you and your loved ones don’t end up craving brains.

I

.M. first suspected something was afoot when his third grade teacher tasted a classmate.

“She was our cursive and grammar teacher, so clearly evil. Mary Johnson put up her hand, and Mrs. Cunningham came to the back of the class with a funny stilted kind of a walk. We thought she was just helping her, and then she took a big bite out of her neck. Then we knew something was wrong,” he said. Since moving to Doha, I.M. has met others who have had zombie experiences. While they prefer to go by the pseudonyms I.M., C.J., and Ninja Steve for security reasons, together they’re preparing their compound for the inevitable. “We selected it with an eye to security. We need to make the preparations, but we don’t want to draw the neighbors’ attention to it, because when the day comes, roving hoards of humans who didn’t prepare will be more dangerous in the short term,” said I.M. “Every time we open that gate, we’re opening ourselves up to infection. Emergency room doctors, engineers, and electricians; we have a short list, based on skills. English majors aren’t high up. Paris Hilton is the first to go. We are assuming, much like social security and retirement, that we can’t count on any government to look after us. We hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

They’re lucky they live in Doha. “Qatar has very effective antizombie measures. There’s a reason the United State’s base is here,” said Ninja Steve.“ Geographically they’re pretty well isolated: they’ve got a huge desert on one side, so you’re not going to have that many zombies just wandering in. And Qataris are extremely lucky because Saluki (dogs) were originally bred as zombie hunters. It’s put Qatar light years ahead of other countries in being able to combat the zombie hoards.” The weather also helps- zombies obey the laws of physics, drying out in heat and freezing in cold. According to C.J., the best-case scenario is warm and wet- tropical zombies decompose quickly, while zombies in arctic conditions freeze and thaw. “Even if its arms and legs come off, it still keeps going,” said C.J.“It’s kind of like the energizer bunny. A rotting, brain-hungry bunny.”. Once you start tugging on the threads, the sweater quickly comes unraveled- with zombies as the cause for everything from unexplained race riots to the BP disaster (caused by a hoard of undersea zombies bumping into it). But, the Compound Crusaders are quick to point out zombies are not what you think.

Could it Happen? Yes. Here’s how:

“Movies are so unrealistic. It’s like Doctors watching ER,” said I.M. “So like ‘28 Days Later’? Completely forget that. While it’s fine entertainment, don’t look to it for advice to survive the upcoming zombie apocalypse. It’d be like using Buffy the Vampire slayer as a guide to surviving the vampire outbreak.” The only thing they get right is how to kill a zombie- by smashing its brain. Everything else is more likely to get you infected than help you. “People get cocky and take unnecessary risks. It’s stupid young men playing with zombies,” said I.M. The virus can be spread through any contact with fluid- through a bite, or even through a cut or a scrape. “The hero dies,” said C.J. “From a splinter. Or a scraped knee. Don’t try to be the hero.” The best defense isn’t a good offense- it’s a pantry of canned foods and enough dynamite to blow up your stairs. “Zombies have a big weakness where their largest predator, humans, is also their food source,” said C.J. “We just have to ride it out.”

So to prepare, they’re battening down the hatches and running zombie drills, much like fire drills. They have early warning systems, including their compound security guard, whose screams would alert them it’s time to lock down. “Kids are also a great distractions for zombies,” said I.M. Preparations also come with ethical dilemmas Hollywood rarely deals with. “The liberal tradition is everyone is equal,” said C.J. “Except Zombies. They’ve sort of forfeited their rights. It might come across that we’re heartless and we’re going to be just as bad as the zombies in our own way, but we don’t eat people. Unless it’s necessary. That’s why I’m trying to lose weight.” It takes around 24 hours after exposure before the flu-like symptoms become an uncontrollable craving for brains. C.J., Ninja Steve and I.M. recommend a modified buddy-system, where everyone is responsible for putting down someone else should they be exposed. This, they say, is especially effective when spouses and loved ones are involved. “There are (naysayers in the compound), but we have plans for them.”

Toxoplasmosa gondii. A parasite that infects rats brains, but can only breed in the intestines of cats. It takes control of the rat, and makes it run towards locations where it will get eaten. And about half the human population is already infected with a version of it. Neurotoxins. Toxins that can mimic death, Romeo and Juliette (or Japanese fugu) style. Victims can be brought back with chemicals called alkaloids, but they’re left in a slow, memory less state only able to moan and perform simple tasks. One man in Haiti was buried in 1962, and was found wandering around 18 years later- brought back to work on sugar plantations. Tasty. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Mad Cow disease, human edition. It happens when we eat meat from infected cows, and makes people hallucinating, shuffling, uncoordinated drones suffering from dementia and twitching seizures. If the disease evolves to attack serotonin, our happy-making chemical, we’d be angry, shuffling drones. Or Madder Cows. Neurogenesis. Stem cells used to re-generate dead cells. Scientists are already able to re-grow the brains of comatose head trauma patients, and combined with technological freshness seals, we can almost bring back the dead. Except for what one lab, dedicated to ‘reanimation research’ discovered: the process causes the brain to die off from the outside in, killing off the cortex, the bit housing our personalities and making us nice and sane. Without it, we’re just a brain stem in a body with no thoughts, guided by impulses. Now if we decided our impulse was for brains... 35

With food and fun all over the city this month, we picked the brains of some of our favorite German and Austrian chefs to bring a little bit of traditional Octoberfest to your own kitchen!

Kaiserschmarrn Emperors’ Pancake Jurgen Lepping, Executive Chef at the Ramada Plaza Doha, brings us this treat from his native Germany. 250 ml milk 2 eggs (separated) 25 g sugar 25 g butter (softened) 100 g plain flour 25 g raisins 2 tablespoons butter (extra)

Method Put the milk, egg yolks, sugar and butter in a blender or food processor. While the machine is running add the flour. Continue blending for 30 seconds. Add the raisins. Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form and carefully fold the mixture into them. Melt the butter in small frying pan. Pour a quarter of the mixture into the frying pan, allow to brown and then flip to brown the other side. Keep warm while cooking the remaining pancakes. Sprinkle with caster sugar and serve with lightly whipped cream.

QH SENSATION LOOK

By Sydnee Bryant

Puffy sleeves and low necklines usually scream one of two things: beer wench or cheesy Halloween costume. But Bavarian-bred Nina Heidenreich finds ways to ensure the traditional Bavarian dress stays classy. In honour of Oktoberfest, we catch up with the designer who managed to infuse authentic Bavarian style with a Middle Eastern twist.

D

uring this year’s Oktoberfest, which marks the 200th anniversary of the event, don’t be surprised if you happen to run into a lovely lady or two in a Qatariinspired hybrid of classic Bavarian style and Indian Sari silk. Bavarian dresses, known as Dirndls, are a big part of the annual celebration. Designer Nina Heidenreich’s sales increase dramatically in Munich directly prior to Oktoberfest, proving that many revelers chose to party in style. “(Oktoberfest is a) big melting pot of different nations celebrating in a peaceful way,” Heidenreich said. She finds inspiration for her designs from the variety of Dirndl seen at each Oktoberfest. Born in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany, Heidenreich moved to Vienna as a teenager and identifies herself as an Austrian with Bavarian roots. She moved to Qatar to play violin in the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Heidenreich began designing dresses shortly after she arrived in Qatar two years ago. “When I moved here, I was impressed by the creativity of the local women, how they [adorn] their Abayas with rhinestones and stitchery,” Heidenreich said. “I wanted to create something “cross-cultural,” with the colourful silk fabrics and the traditional Bavarian style.” She found a tailor with 40 years experience in handling high quality fabrics to help her bring her designs to life. “His experiences makes the cooperation between us easy,” Heidenreich said. Dirndls are generally all made in a traditional style; it is the colour and embroidery on each Dirndl that makes each dress unique, says Heidenreich. Customers can custom design their Dirndl by choosing the colour, neckline and length. Custommade Dirndls should be ordered in advance because custom fitting and detailed craftsmanship take time. Women usually wear Dirndls at traditional Bavarian and Austrian events like Oktoberfest. Due to the high quality of the fabric, her designs can also be worn at weddings and formal events. Heidenreich’s love of fashion started at an early age. “Fortunately I was born in a designer family which supports my every move,” Heidenreich said. “My part of the business is finding new fabrics and accessories, and the communication with

the tailor here in Doha. This is more fun than work to me. The main part of the business, making patterns, marketing and customer service is done by my family in Bavaria.” Heidenreich devotes most of her time to the violin. Her free time is spent dreaming up new designs, picking out fabrics and colours, and collaborating with her tailor to ensure her creative visions spin into reality. “I love to find the perfect combination of wonderful fabric and ornamentation that I can get here in Doha,” Heidenreich stated. Traditionally, Dirndls are made of cotton. Heidenreich’s designs are made with Indian Sari silk, making her designs unique. Since there is currently no market in Qatar for her dresses, Heidenreich sells her designs mostly in Bavaria and Austria, in addition to selling them through her website. Unlike many designers, Heidenreich says, she does not aspire to have her dresses in every store on the planet. “I want to sell exclusive dresses. Customers should be aware that every Dirndl is a unique masterpiece and we have only a few in stock.” Seeing a woman on the street wearing one of her dresses is always a moment of pride for her. “I’m always very happy that my customer feels comfortable.” For more information, or to order your own, visit www.ninah.info.

QH SENSATIONS LIVE

By Jessica Davey-Quantick

Four months ago I started on a journey, beyond space and time. I left my fast-food drenched home and entered: the Slim n Lite zone.

I

t started with me trapped and sweaty inside a dress. With the top clenched around my arms and refusing to go back over my head, my belly jiggling like a truly unfortunate bowlful of jelly in the mirror at H&M as I twisted and shimmied in shame, I knew it was time for a change. Like so many Doha- transplants, I’d succumbed to the lure of rich food and absolutely no physical activity. Walking? Never! Not to mention a period of time where I wasn’t home enough to grocery shop, let alone cook, and my office became a dumping ground of canned soup on the corner of my desk for late nights and one too many orders of KFC. A change had to be made, but I needed to have all responsibility removed. I clearly could not be trusted.

Slim n Lite boxes were as close as I could get. The concept was pretty simple: every day a box would arrive at my office. Inside would be my food for the next day. Every few weeks, I’d have meetings with a nutritionist who’d weigh and measure me, to determine how I was doing and what needed to be changed. At the beginning, the boxes were positively luxurious. With pasta and mashed potatoes and dessert, it didn’t feel like a diet at all. There was pizza. And chocolate. Surely it’s not a diet if there is cheesecake involved? But somehow, that month, I lost over five KG. They recommend at least half an hour of physical activity each day. I upped that to a split workout of an hour each morning and another each night- first through a program at Six Senses Village and Spa and later on my

own. There was even an off evening, every Thursday night, where I could eat what I liked: I wasn’t that obnoxious friend who can never be taken out to dinner or who gazes at your popcorn at the movies like a rabid dog, till you begin to fear for the safety of your fingers. I could, for all intents and purposes, be a real person who actually ate.

only route to skinny redemption. With Slim n Lite, it wasn’t like that. The boxes were balanced, with fruit, vegetables, salads, meat, dairy, carbs and dessert. Even when we started ratcheting it up a notch, cutting back on the carbs and increasing the protein, I still didn’t feel like this was something to be gotten through. It just felt like I was eating, and that was that.

That was new to me. A lifetime as the “fat friend” had taught me that I was not socially allowed to eat. Order a regular soda? Scandal. Supersize? Prepare for whispered comments of disgust (if only in your own head). And that, managers and dieticians at Slim n Lite say, is what they wanted to change- not just what was going in my mouth, but my whole outlook on food.

But I was losing! Ever few weeks I’d go in and the tape measure would come out. I’d go down a cm, down a KG. Then one week: disaster. I plateaued. I didn’t go down. I didn’t move. I wanted to curl up in a fatty ball and cry. But the nutritionist was lovely- she reassured me this was normal, and with a few clicks of her mouse adjusted the diet to get me over the hump without me even noticing it. There was support there, and an understanding that sometimes we all have bad weeks. Sometimes we go on holiday, sometimes we have to go to lunch with colleagues, sometimes we just screw up and eat a french fry and that’s ok. It’s how we bounce back that matters. They don’t just weigh you; they measure you. They analyze your fat content. And the friendly receptionist and nutritionist is always ready to chime in with ‘you’re looking great!’ before you even step on the scale- and somehow, you start to trust and believe that. They’re looking at more than just the number on the scale; they’re tracking how you feel, muscle content, fat mass, and how your pants fit.

Not so much a diet, it’s a healthy eating kick in the pants that for many can become long term solution. Pricing is around what you’d pay for groceries and take-aways every month anyway. Slim n Lite a quick solution to the diet dilemma that is Doha. For me, it pounded a lot of my neurosis to dust. Usually, I’m a person who, when trying to eat healthy, will mentally destroy myself second guessing every morsel I put in my mouth, agonizing over an extra drop of milk or scoop of peanut butter. I feel like if I’m enjoying what I’m eating I’m cheating. But when it comes so neatly labeled in a box, it’s simple: I am allowed, guilt-free, to eat that chocolate filled croissant, that serving of pasta or that bit of rice. Somehow, over time, my attitude towards food started to change. I got far too excited when a pear would show up in the box, and would crave an apple or a bit of chicken instead of a Big Mac or a can of Pringles. I know, I was flabbergasted too. I started to notice how I felt after food- when I did cheat, I felt lethargic, and like I had an overgrown kitten sitting in my lap. But more importantly, it taught me to actually eat. Often on diets I’d feel like I was punishing my body with a cycle of dietary self-flagellation as the

So four months later I’m back at H&M. I’m back in the dressing room, confronted with yet another cute summer dress. I look at it like I’m about to do battle. I finger the material; I contemplate the ramifications of its stretch-osity. I wonder why on earth they always seem to turn the heat up in changing areas because I’m always sweaty and annoyed when I try on clothing. I slip it off the hanger, take a deep breath, and tug. And this time it fits. 47

COLOUR SCOPE

BALANCE AND ENERGIZE YOUR HOME

A TRENDY FALL COLOUR COMBINATION By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant

After a year of deciphering color meanings, I wanted to pick my two favorite colours and give you the best advice on how to use them together in your home. I have selected cool colours because they have a calming effect. Blue, green, and neutrals white, grey, and silver, are examples of cool colours. My favorite cool colours are turquoise (a mix of blue and green) and grey. First choice – Turquoise! Cheerful and sophisticated, turquoise is Pantone’s official colour of the year. It’s also the perfect hue to add some bliss into your home décor. It can be bright and bursting with energy, pleasantly pale and subdued or even jewel-toned.

Second Choice – Grey! Glamorous, sleek and distinguished, grey can be modern or impart a feeling of ornate riches and tradition. All shades of grey are neutral background colours. Use lighter shades in place of white and darker shades in place of black. Taupe, a grayish brown neutral, is a conservative, slightly earthy, warm shade of grey.

Putting it together Feng-Shui-wise

Decora tin Advice g

Divide colo ur use, wit 60 per cen h approxim t of the roo ately m in the b (lightest) co a ck g round lo ur, 30 per mid-tone co lour, and 1 cent in the 0 per cent accent (bri in the ghtest Bo Conce ) colours. The One a pts have a nd n ass of accesso ries and fu ortment rniture to spruce up your living areas.

To use these colours in your home, apply grey in the living room, home office and entry hall (foyer), especially on the walls facing West (Creativity) and Northwest (Helpful and Blessings) and North (Career and Path of Life). Avoid using grey in the feng shui areas of East and Southeast of your space, as both of these areas have Wood as the main feng shui element, and the colour grey, being Metal, destroys the Wood. That said, a warm, silvery grey colour can bring a beautiful, clear and centering feng shui energy.

Turquoise, because it has blue undertones and belongs to the Water feng shui element, is an excellent colour to place in the East (Health and Family) and Southeast (Wealth and Abundance) of your home or office, as Water energy nourishes the Wood element of these two Accent Colour Choices feng shui areas. Add a much-needed splash of turquoise through lavender, pink, coral or terracotta (burnt orange), lime green and red. wall colour, art, or various decor items. I would choose hot pink!

Tips • Decide on an ‘anchor’ fabric that has grey, turquoise and another colour. • Choose the main background colour from the fabric as a wall colour. • Pick a mid-toned colour from the fabric for large furniture pieces, which could be a solid or patterned design. Upholstery can also be done in your anchor fabric or coordinating fabric. • Use the brightest colours from the fabric for accessories, accents and decorative pillows. • Repeat colours evenly throughout the room and in at least three places.
