Ramadan draws to a close shortly, and with it we reflect on the many celebratory happenings that have passed, and those to come. Venues around the city celebrated in style – our It Happened section highlights some of the best and brightest events to celebrate the holy month this year. As people begin to plan their Eid holidays, we bring you our mini-city guides to three of our favorite quick getaways in our Reason’s to Fly Special section this month as well.

Our staff also traveled to Turkey with Al Mana Fashion Group to attend Mango’s exclusive Fall/Winter fashion show, ready to hit the shelves this fall and get you back to work and school in style. In our Sports section, we found out all about the Qatar Cycling Club. We also caught up with the Communications Director for the 2022 FIFA bid, available exclusively on our website. Log on to www.qatarhappening.com to find out what’s happening with one of Qatar’s biggest sports bids, and the countries efforts to host the 2022 World Cup. And while new and exciting things, like the bid, are always at the forefront of our minds, we set out on a journey around the world to bring you our top picks of old standby Doha eateries, with food from around the globe, in our food section. We also got a special preview of the new South American restaurant at the Sheraton, Latino’s, due to open after Eid. Welcome back, and Eid Mubarak from all of us here at QH!

QH RECOMMENDS
We’re back with a bang of resounding randomness this month! Jane Austen gets Awesome When we first picked up ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ we thought we were going to snore our way through yet another tale of proper values, fancy dresses, and delightfully romantic misunderstandings around every corner. Then we realized this is the Bennet sisters, and Mr. Darcy, only with Zombies. And Ninjas. Ninja’s fighting Zombies (head spins off at the ridiculous awesomness that entails). The book follows the the original exactly... If the original included ‘the unmentionables’, a race of undead who’ve plagued the world for decades and leave all proper young ladies, included the Bennet sisters, to be schooled in the ‘deadly arts’. Extra points for when Mr Darcy finally, after hundreds of years, gets a good roundhouse kick to the face! Check it out at amazon.com
Our Feets Too Big We have big feet. At least some of us over at QH do. And that’s a problem when it comes to finding shoes in Doha. Which is how we stumbled upon our latest sartorial obsession, www. shoesofprey.com. This is so much more than just an online shoe store: they (wait for it) let you (OMG we just can’t handle this) design (greatest. Thing. Ever.) your own shoes! They’ve got a variety of templates, for heel height and width, toe shape, as well as trims, and a vast collection of leathers and fabrics in all sorts of rainbrowbrite colours to select from. After which they make them for you, and mail them to you! And best of all, they’ll keep adjusting them until they fit perfectly, then keep all your measurements on record- meaning custom designed, perfectly fitted shoes. Excuse us while we swoon.
Play that funky music, white girl
Xtra-awesome Xtranormal.com has helped us get through the summer months with panache (and cartoon teddy bears). A text-to-movie site, you write a script and it instantly animates it for you! You can choose characters, backgrounds, voices, and even shot angles – although only the default settings are free. We’re pretty sure it’s the same evil mental voice that made us put Led Zeppelin tapes in our Teddy Ruxpin that makes us write completely ridiculous scripts, but regardless, it’s one piece of technology we can get behind (we’re onto you Jobs, with your iPod and your iPad and your clear schemes for world domination). Check it out at www.xtranormal.com.

We cannot wait for the arrival of a new spa opening at the Beverly Hill Towers next month! Check us out next month for a full review when they open their doors!
Could someone please send us one of the Eid baskets from Fauchon? Jam packed with goodness only found at Fauchon, from nuts, jams, coffee and teas to biscuits, cookies and chocolates, it’s an easy yet impressive Eid gift. The small basket is on offer for the special price of QR 590, while the V VIP clients can get the large Fauchon Basket with an assortment of Fauchon groceries for QR 1,650.
A Toque by any other name... ... still rocks our world. And the runway, when we got to attend the Mango Fall/Winter fashion show! This year featured a vast selection of hats and toques (known by non-canucks as a ski-cap), all in gorgeous knits and ribbed fabrics. And we’re hoping some global warming comes our way and makes it cool enough to sport them in Doha this winter, otherwise we are just turning down our ACs and pretending it’s snowing in our offices. On our awesome hats.

DJ Sonique is back at the Qube, at Ramada Plaza on September 30th! We caught up with her to find out what it takes to rock the house. One of the UK’s finest exports, DJ and Vocalist Sonique has warmed Doha’s shores once before. Originally with ‘S Express’, she’s worked with Tim Simenon before coming into her own as a DJ. Now, she combines power-house vocals with club beats, performing all over the world and topping the charts with ‘I Put a Spell on You’ and ‘It Feels So Good’, and receiving a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist in 2001. With a new record deal and her new album, Sweet Vibrations, making us happy, we’re eager to see what she has in store for Doha!

QH: How did you get started? S: I dreamed of being the world’s best pentathlete. Trained every single day. I guess I was pretty obsessed. But at the age of 15 I came second in a race and wasn’t used to losing so decided to do something else. At the age of 17 a youth worker told me I had a good voice so I put together a reggae band called Fari and immediately found myself writing songs for the band. After the band disbanded in 1985 I released the single “Let Me Hold You” and suppose you could say the rest is history. QH: What’s it like to perform? What’s going through your mind while you do it? S: I love to perform, sing my heart out, play good music, and give the people who come to see me the best show I possibly can. QH: What’s it like performing in Doha? S: The people in Doha are very warm and friendly. Oh and the food is great! I perform as well as I can in Doha, if not better, because I always get such a good reception in Qatar and I am so well looked after here.
QH: What keeps you motivated? S: The warm reception I always receive when I am DJ’ing or performing on stage, the garden at my home in the British Hertfordshire countryside and my two dogs. QH: What’s next for you – any big plans for the future?

And the past few months I’ve been working with UK DJ Paul Morrell on a new single “Only You” which will be out very soon - you can see the video on You Tube. QH: You’re performing right after Ramadan – does that affect you? S: Not at all. I’m just hoping that the Qatari people will be up for a real party on Thursday 30th September!

You might run into Ted Bear, the Qatar Animal Welfare Society’s mascot, who recently took his cuddliness up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the animal shelter! Ted Bear had to be smuggled on board the plane to Kenya. “Give him some sandwiches and he can sit in my backpack,” said Carl Roberts, Ted’s escort. “Ted Bear has decided that he’s going to eat lots. He’s going to be as fat as possible so he’s not going to get cold, and then I’ve got to lug his sorry ass up the hill. He’s doing a great job raising lots of money. He’s probably got twice as many friends on Facebook as I have!” Besides packing loads of honey and sandwiches (and possibly marmalade) for Ted, Roberts has also been training extensively for the trip. 26
“I’ve been climbing staircases. My building is eight stories tall, and I’ve worked my way up to climbing up and down the staircase 25 times. That takes about two hours, and it’s 200 stories. It’s going to take six days to climb Kilimanjaro,” he said. “We start off in a rainforest with armed game wardens walking with us, watching out for the wild animals and we end up on the top of the mountain at -35, below freezing. It’s quite daunting but it’s really really exciting as well.” Ted’s fairly new on the social scene, but his Paddington-esq charm has made him a star. “We had a function earlier in the year, and we had Ted Bear made specifically for QAWS, so he wears a QAWS

SPOTLIGHT ON KNOWLEDGE
By Brian Wesolowski
In general, Steve Jobs scares us. But Brian Wesolowski, Publications Manager with ictQatar and the mind behind the Digital Qatar blog, gives QH the full scoop on why Apple’s latest toy, the iPad, has stolen his heart.
S
ince its April release, more than 5 million iPads have been sold worldwide. Certainly there have been a fair share of them sold here in Qatar (or purchased for much less in another county and brought here), so I thought I might take a moment to reflect on why I am loving my iPad, how people are using it and find out what you love about yours.
First, some research. A recent post on Mashable highlighted the findings of Resolve Market Research on how people are using the iPad and its impact on other technology devices. As most predicted, iPad is a potential killer for e-readers. Of those surveyed, 49% said they would not purchase an e-reader after buying the iPad. The next device least likely to be purchased after owning an iPad was any gaming device, which is a bit surprising. The study showed that most people still see the iPad as an expensive toy (55%) as opposed to a breakthrough 30
technology (33%), but for a large number of those surveyed (37%) the iPad is their first Apple product. This means it is not just Apple junkies buying the iPad: it has great potential to bring new people to the Apple world. One of those new users is my mom. She is actually new to a lot of things. Through the iPad she sent her first email, from her first ever email address. She said she is using the iPad mostly for e-Books, but she has also taken to downloading music, and is now also staying in touch with her kids. She’s not alone; it seems that people in her age bracket (45+) are the second round of adopters for the iPad (after the young professionals) and they are finding it easy to use and accessible. So what do I love about my iPad? Right now I find myself primarily using it as an e-reader. There is certainly a shortage of book options in Qatar, so being able to tap into the online stores for a wide range of titles is fantastic. I am also downloading a lot of movies and TV shows to it for my upcoming trip to OSCON in
the US. It’s a long trip, and the screen size really makes viewing videos enjoyable. And because of the iPad, I may not even take my laptop on this trip – I can do just about everything I need to through the iPad, including posting to Digital Qatar, although I am still getting used to typing on it (and make plenty of mistakes!). I am also among those using it for gaming, although not necessarily the high-tech games – I am a big Scrabble fan! I tend to think the iPad is a bit more than just an expensive toy, but it probably does not qualify as a breakthrough either. It certainly seems to fill a gap though, making digital content available, and more importantly, easily accessible, to a wider range of people. I doubt that my mom would have set up an email address if it wasn’t so easy to access through the iPad. The cost still remains a bit high in my opinion for mass adoption, but it is certainly less expensive than many laptops and does much more than any e-reader currently on the market. I definitely expect the iPad to stick around and grow in popularity, and ways it can be used. So what do you think about your iPad? Yes, tell me why you love it!

With the end of Ramadan, it’s time to get out and explore the dining possibilities in Doha! And as much as we love the new and exciting, there are some old favorites that keep us coming back and cleaning our plates. We’ve traveled the globe through the streets of Doha, and brought you our top dining picks with food from all over the world! North America Mexico J.W’s Steakhouse Paloma’s You can’t get more American (or Canadian for that matter) than a good hunk of meat. Which is why we’re completely in love with J.W.’s Steakhouse at the Doha Marriott. Opened a year ago, it first seduced us with its vast array of sides, and a year later, it’s still finger licking good. From the first moment you sit down, in roomy leather armchairs and are presented with a flowerpot of homemade herb bread, you know you’re in for some home cooking of the best sort. It’s an old school restaurant, straight out of 1974, with it’s leather and wood and table side service, but that’s just part of it’s charm. My dining buddy made some very odd faces as he tucked into the steak house salad with fried onions and beef strips, claiming it made him tingle in all the right places (and this is not a guy who’s usually excited by lettuce). But what really sets this place apart is the sides- served family style, they make the onion ring classy. Not to mention the garlic mash potatoes and the creamed spinach- which is the only way I will eat any vegetable that’s been creamed. This is the spot for a classy night out where you will leave bursting, and won’t have to worry about which fork to use. For more information, call 4429-8888. 34
We couldn’t leave that side of the ocean without a stop down Mexico way. Paloma’s at the InterContinental has long been a Doha hot spot, with its mix of bar fun and Tex-Mex cuisine. For this adventure, I dragged along a Texan and a Mexican, to see how they measured up. With literal mountains of frozen margaritas to wash it down, Paloma’s has got the cheese drenched deep fried goodness covered. This is not a place to be on a diet, as their nachos come smothered in beef, cheese and beans, their stuffed jalapeños are bursting with mild cheese, and they do things with potato skins that would make Richard Simmons weep (or induce meat sweats). If you can make it through to the mains, they don’t disappoint either: their fajitas are a Thursday night tradition, as is yelling over their band while you dine. Most people, according to our friendly waiter, never make it to dessert but you should attempt to leave some room: one dessert involving sweet potatoes and chocolate ice cream, while strange sounding, is actually a delightful bit of spicy yum, with an almost brownie layer at the bottom. The verdict? They can chimmy our changa anytime. For more information, call 4484-4444.

France Maison Du Caviar
China Chopsticks We’re picky about our Chinese food. Half the QH team are devotes of the truly authentic, while the other half longs for chicken balls that look like deep fried golf balls, in an electric orange sauce, the kind of Americanized-Chinese that is actually better congealed out of the fridge the next day. So the stakes were high when we visited Chopsticks at the Grand Regency, and they did not disappoint! Often forgotten in the Doha landscape, as they are a dry venue, the Grand Regency is the little hotel that could, offering up succulent noodles and really delectable sweet and sour chicken with authenticity and panache. While they hit those high notes of truly Chinese dishes, they also cater to those of us who can’t quite get the hang of chopsticks. Served family style, and with reasonable prices, Chopsticks has added itself to our list of school-night locales for dinners out with friends! For more information, call 4434-3333.
The Maison du Caviar stole our hearts last year when they opened their doors at the W, and they continue to rock our gastronomical world. With curved benches and a loop-the-loop layout, they’re ideal for intimate dinners or quiet evenings with friends, although we like it so much it has hosted one QH staffers birthday party in the past. This was the place that introduced us to fois gras and made us it’s fatty supplicant. The fois gras melts in your mouth and makes you want to forget exactly how it came to be. As well, the Margret of Duck is one of the greatest things to ever be in our collective mouth- you just have to get out of the chef’s way and let him serve it pink, where it will melt it’s way into your heart. We’re big fans of the Chocolate Fondant as well, which, even a year and many restaurant reviews later, continues to be in our Top 5 desserts in Doha. For more information, call 4453-5353.
Japan Sakura There is no dirth of Japanese in Doha. Not so long ago, some of us over here at QH refused to eat it, being more than a little skeezed out by the idea of raw fish. Now, however, it’s our go-to dinner out, as even if you’re watching what you eat, there is no possible way you can overindulge in sushi. And one of our favorites has to be Sakura at Ramada Plaza. With a menu that includes sushi but also teppanyaki, Japanese barbecue done right in front of you, for those who are still squeamish about sashimi, it makes our wasabi-loving hearts go pitter pat. With chefs frying and rolling right in front of you, not to mention juggling eggs and creating shots of flame as they prepare your meat in front of you, it’s dinner theatre, heavy on the theatre. The sushi is light and fresh, with just the right mixture of traditional rolls and more experimental flavors. We are especially addicted to the spicy salmon rolls, which could be sent over to our office any lunch hour with no problems at all (hint hint). For more information, call 4441-7417.

Italy Porcini’s Doha is awash in Italian food, from the classy to the Chef Boyardee. But we were especially tickled by Porcini’s, at the Ritz Carleton. With the arrival of their new Italian chef last month, they got a jolt of new energy and wacky experimentation that makes us go mmmmmm (seriously, he sent over a green tea ice cream experiment that was possibly one of the best things We’ve ever licked off a spoon). With risotto storming the foodie bastions of late, Porcini’s does it correctly, with asparagus and smoked fois gras, smoked in house. The buffalo and eggplant ravioli also tickled our fancy, but what really got us with the classy and intimate atmosphere. Right down to a stand brought over for our handbags, Porcini’s has captured that elegant Audrey-Hepburn-In-RomanHoliday Italian essence to a T. For more information, call 4484-8000.

Middle East Al Mourjan Thailand Thai Snacks When it comes to Thai, nothing beats the indomitable Thai Snacks, in Nasr street, near Doha Clinic. Tucked away, it’s an explosion of plastic and Christmas lights, with a men’s-only massage parlor off to one side. Possibly the only truly cheap-and-cheerful location in Doha, it’s not much to look at but then, oh then, the food arrives. With steaming dumplings mounded in individual boxes and curries so hot your face will drip sweat, it’s a must for any culinary journey across the city. The range of spiciness runs from mild to does-not-want-to-be-eaten, and is as close to authentic street food as you’ll find in Doha. And with eat in and take away options, there is a portion of the population who are essentially made up of nothing but vast quantities of Thai noodles, at this point. For more information, call 4436-9704.
You can’t go around the world without staying close to home, and while there are dozens of Middle Eastern restaurants in the city, we bow down to Al Mourjan. Maybe it’s the location, being the only restaurant on the Corniche, right under the Oryx, or maybe it’s their patio, which is almost in the water, or maybe it’s just their sesame paste: whatever it is, we love it! It’s the perfect spot to take new arrivals or visitors, especially at night when you can book a table outside with a gorgeous view of West Bay and the moon. The staff know their stuff too, so it’s a great way to learn a bit more about Lebanese cuisine- ask for the Baby Mezzah, a collection of miniaturized dishes so you can sample at will . Or stick with our favs, the mahummra, tajine and chicken livers! For more information, call 4483-4423.

atinos is out to prove that South American food is so much more than tacos. With an Argentinean chef, they offer a combination of food from the whole continent, none of which come with a side of guacamole. When we sat down to test-drive some of their munchables this month, I was surprised at how healthy and lacking in deep-fried cheese it was. First up with the Jumbo Prawn and Scallops Cerviche. A mixture of scallops, prawns, onions and habanero chilis, dressed with limejuice, coriander and salt and pepper and served with sweet corn and just a drop of olive oil, it was surprisingly light and refreshing. The tangy zip of the lime combined with the

burn of the peppers made it the culinary equivalent of a cup of tea on a hot day- seems like it shouldn’t make you cooler, but it does! Next, we got to try the Parrillada, a strip loin steak from Argentina. Called Bife de Chorizo, this one brings home why Argentina is famous for their beef with meaty conviction. Done simply, it’s marinated for four to six hours. But what really lifted our luggage about this is the three special chimichurries, or sauces, that came with it. With three degrees of hotness (mild, zippy and ludicrous), these come on the side so you can try them out in small doses. The mild was a tangy mix of oregano, while the two hotter varieties challenged our taste buds: we really liked the medium, which had a lovely flavor before a subtle burn kicked in at the end. The hottest variety is not for the faint of heart: my dining companion came away with beads of sweat clinging to his moustache. It comes with grilled pineapple as well, which at first may seem insane, but after trying it is completely delightful. One of the standouts however wasn’t even the main dishes, but the potatoes. They looked like a bowl of perfectly deep fried potatoes wedges, and tasted
like everything I’m not normally allowed to eat lest I gain 300 pounds. However, since they’re baked twice, not fried, like everything else on the menu they’re not terrifically bad for you! With a little drop of the spicy sauce I couldn’t eat just one. The meal wrapped up with an Argentine style bread pudding. Now, normally, I find Bread Pudding extremely unsettling: it’s something about the texture, half way between a solid and a jelly that just throws me off. But this one was more of a cheesecake consistency, with a delicate sweetness. They use sweet croissants and chocolate chips to make it, and top it with dulce de leche sauce and caramelized bananas- the sharp crunch of the caramel, combined with the liquid sweetness of the bananas made us lick the plate. All in all, we’re excited for them to open their doors officially! We expect to spend many an evening lurking there, a potato in one hand, a pisco sour in the other.

Istanbul, Turkey What can we say about this magically city? It’s stolen our hearts and we’re in no hurry to get them back. With an eclectic mix of old and new, Asian, European and Middle Eastern, it’s like nowhere else. Literally at the crossroads of the continents (the city spans both the Asia and Europe sides of the Bosphorus), it’s remarkably easy to get around, and is ideal for solo traveling. Whether Byzantine, Roman, European or Ottoman, the city once known as Constantinople is one of those places that should be on everyone’s bucket list!
Stay...
At the Ritz Carlton. There are hundreds of boutique hotels and hostels in the old city of Sultanahmet, mere feet from the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, and a collection of other equally impressive, culturally significant and amazingly old and awesome sites. But if you’re looking for a little more luxury in your stay, you can’t do much better than the Ritz Carlton, located across the Bosphorus on the Asia side. On top of a large hill, it’s a quick walk to the metro, letting you get back into the action at the drop of a lira, but it’s also isolated enough you can relax in Turkish splendor. Try to score a corner suite- with almost 360 degrees of gorgeous happening outside your window, you’ll be tempted not to leave!
Eat...
Turkish delight in the Spice Market. The quintessential dessert, we’ve been intrigued by it since we read the Chronicles of Narnia as a child where it got a shout out in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It comes in a vast variety of flavours, and there is no better way to try them all then a wander through the Spice Market, where vendors will offer you plate after plate of gelatinous wonder (possibly while calling you ‘princess’, which we have to say, completely made our day). Make sure to wash it down with some traditional Turkish tea, served in small glass cups, a sure antidote to summer heat! 42
Don’t miss...
The Basilica Cistern. The largest of several hundred ancients cisterns beneath the city, it’s literally a hop skip and a jump from Hagia Sophia, but many people still manage to miss it. That’s because most of the cool stuff is deep underground- it was built in the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, and standing near the still-lapping water, you get the feeling it could still function today. Originally used for water filtration, it’s a huge, dark cavern filled with ancient columns, including carved faces of Medusa, mysteriously set one upside down, the other on it’s side. It was a location for the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love, which just makes it all the cooler. Make sure to bring some bread crumbs for the giant fish that swim around the base of the columns!
Istanbul Checklist The Blue Mosque. beautiful dome, lots of minarets. Make sure to bring a scarf though, as you’ll be asked to cover your hair before entering! Hagia Sophia. one of the oldest churches in the world, Sir Richard the Lionheart, as well as Byzantian emperors, were crowned here. Today, the walls are decorated with Christian and Muslim iconography, from when it was a Mosque, and amazing Byzantine mosaics are being uncovered. Topaki Palace. the perfect place to get a sense of Ottoman Turkey, marvel at the gems and jewels and wander the gardens like you were a courtier or a member of the harem!
Don’t Forget...
A folding fan. You can pick these up cheaply in the Grand Bazaar, and Turkish women, tourist and local alike, use them as an elegant way to beat the heat.

Beirut, Lebanon Anyone who’s been in Doha longer than a week gets admonished that ‘they have to go to Lebanon! It’s amazing’. And in this case, it actually is! With a rich and exciting nightlife, a relaxed and mellow day life, it’s the perfect place if you want to brush off the dust of a quiet Ramadan with some excitement!

Beirut Checklist:
At the Embassy Hotel. Cheap and cheerful, it’s not luxury that puts this at the top of our list, but locationright in the heart of Hamra, it’s steps from some of the most fascinating locals in Beirut. Once known as the Champs Elyse of the orient, old Hamra Street is today filled with shops, including eclectic vintage spots. It’s also close to the American University of Beirut and Bliss Street, which should indicate how awesome it is, based purely on its name, filled with street vendors. It’s also steps from Regusto, an Armenian restaurant we have on good authority will ruin you for Armenian food for life. Plus, at around $40 a night, you can’t go wrong!
Eat...
Somewhere on The Beirut Corniche. With refreshing seaside breezes, you can buy some delicious street food for pennies. Try grilled corn (3arnoos) or beans (fool). There has been talk about outlawing street vendors in this area, and we definitely come down on the con side- there is nothing better than munching something watching the sun set over the water.
Beirut Central District (Soliderie or Downtown). Have a walk there on an evening right before the sunset so you’d see the area during the day and night. The whole district was renovated to how exactly it was before the civil war. You’d notice the old Beirut architecture.
Nejmeh Square. have dinner over looking the clock tower.
Martyr’s Square. take a picture near the Marty’s statue! Club BO18. located inside an ex-war bunker, this is the place to dance the night away in true Lebanese fashion! Affordable, with a long queue on the door on weekends. Try to go on Thursdays to catch underground house music.
Don’t Forget...
To take a communal cab. The shared cab experience is one of those things that just has to be done to be believed. Like a bus in other cities, you can get around for as little as $1- $2, but be sure to agree with the driver on the price before you get in!

REASONS TO FLY
Casablanca, Morocco Ah Morocco. Morocco elicits images of exotic desert and mysterious kasbahs, which we feel it is our duty to rock. In reality it’s so much more. It’s an incredible cultural oasis on the coast of Africa, with a unique culture all its own that has us saying ‘play it again Sam’.
Stay...
At the Hotel Central. Like a boutique, historical hotel, it’s like sleeping on a movie set. You can imagine some handsome bar-owner sweeping you off your feet any moment then forcing you on a plane. Plus, with affordable rates and a central location, it’s a hop skip and a jump from the action! The staff too is incredibly helpful- for solo travelers, or people who don’t speak Arabic or French, they provide invaluable guidance and advice, even going so far as to book taxis, restaurant reservations, and make recommendations on sites to see.
Eat...
Like a local. With Moroccan food subject to such a diverse range of influences and offering some of the tastiest dishes on the African continent, it would truly be a sin not to sample the traditional Moroccan couscous or mint tea, be it from a roadside vendor or at a 5-star restaurant.
Don’t miss...
The sun! With gorgeous weather, it’s home to some very nice beaches. In the summer months, these are busy with families, sun worshippers, and those looking for a bit of relaxation. The beaches of Ain Diab, Bouznika and Agadir are renowned for their golden white sands and warm seawaters. 44
Don’t Forget...
All the souvenirs you could want. You can’t go to Morocco without checking out the markets! A taxi ride to New Medina market place (built in 1923) or the famous Habous Quarter will provide excellent shopping opportunities and are a great tourist destination. A day there will give you all the souvenirs that you might want to take home. You can find silver, opal, agate jewelry, leather cushions/pouffes, leather lampshades (make sure it’s good or it will stink up your house), paintings, decorated mirrors, Tagine dishes and ceramic items bowls and containers and so on.
Morocco Check List Hassan II Mosque. One of the largest in the world, and one of the few mosques open to non-Muslims in the country. Take a Tour. A guided tour of the city is a great way to make sure you don’t miss anything! Tours organized by local operators take visitors to all of the city’s major sights including Hassan II mosque, the Arabe Ligue Park, the Villa des Arts museum, the Mohamed V square and the Royal Palace. Tours generally last a half-day only. Go outside. The city that is. Take advantage of the proximity to visit some of the other famous cities. Marrakesh with its 16th century Saadians tombs; Koutoubia mosque and Bahia palace; Fez with its Karaouiyne Mosque has been named an UNESCO world heritage site. Moulay Idriss Mausoleum and Rabat and Salé with the Hassan tower and Mohamed V Mausoleum, are all accessible within a day’s driving and make for fascinating sightsee

Al Mana Fashion Group takes us behind the scenes at Mango’s exclusive Istanbul Fashion Show! We get the scoop on their new collection, what’s it like putting on a fashion show, and what will be showing up in your closet this autumn!
S
itting next to the runway is like being next to a molten copper river in the middle of a forest. A very leggy forest. Often wearing tweed. Models stomp up and down the runway in the Ciragan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul, Turkey, in layers of wool, tweed, and slumpy boots.
Inspired by the late 1970s, and with customary Mango flair, this collection bridges the gap between masculine and feminine, retro and forward-thinking, and is a fresh new look after the summer’s diaphanous florals. With high-waisted pants, trench coats, double-breasted jackets and tailored coats over chunky knits, or combined with silky blouses and flowing skirts and dresses, it’s a throwback to a disco age that’s at once classic and funky. It’s also massively wearable: the high waisted skirts and pants evoke the 70s proportions with
baggy brilliance (death to the skinny jean), with an emphasis on a small waist. And if the wearer wasn’t born with such, as the models floating up and down with their Farah Hair were, the belts and coat ties of this season create the illusion easily. The lines are feminine and interesting, while still being serious: touches of boho paisleys mix with grown-up tweeds, browns, camels and navy blues. It’s work wear for women who still want to look like women, and we couldn’t be happier that the 80s revival is on it’s way out- bring on the 70s! It’s one of those lines where there is something for everyone, whether a blouse or a skirt, or just the jaunty toques which we’re really hoping aren’t too warm for Doha, as we’d love to wear them. And it’s that need to wear the clothes that actually got Poppy Delevigne her new job, as the face of the fall/winter collection.

We sing in the rain at Angsana Spa.

halk it up to being an Aquarius, but I really really miss rain. A good thunderstorm, a light sun shower, or a good downpour on a gray Tuesday morning, these are the things that I miss living in the desert.
And while we can’t import a rain shower to Doha (yet. We’re going to assume an evil genius has his minions on this as we speak), Angsana Spa at the Grand Regency Hotel has managed to capture every sort of rain in a jar, and their Hydrotherapy treatment let’s patrons twirl around like a 4 year old naked in the driveway on a rainy evening, pretending to be Fred Astaire with a pink umbrella (yes, this happened. Ask my mother). When I book the appointment, I’m told to bring my swimsuit. When I arrive I see why: the Hydrotherapy treatment takes place in a large room broken up by 54
different stations. First up is a Therapeutic Foot Spa, with hot bubbling water and peppermint tea. Next, comes the Tropical Storm Shower, and I get my first taste of being outside in the rain. Normally, I’m fairly skeptical of anything shower claiming to feel like ‘rain’- generally, wet is wet. However, this one actually achieves it, with a gentle mist and irregular drops that feel exactly like being caught in a monsoon. They even regulate the temperature, just like a real storm! Next, a hot sauna opens the pores and drives out impurities, before it’s off to the Ice Fountain. Rubbing fresh ice and snow on your body after a sauna supposedly tightens the skin and stimulates the circulatory system – I just know it made me feel like a human snow cone. After that, there’s a line of other showers to get me sparkling and relaxed. First, the Bucket Drench, an icy traditional experience of a wooden bucket dumped on your head to help close the pores after a second go-round in the sauna, which is said to improve the skins clarity and

tone. Next up, the Spring Shower, where soft droplets make me think of getting caught outside on a warm spring day, and the Cold Mist Shower, a refreshing blast that’s like standing behind a waterfall (if a waterfall smelt of essential oils and created rainbows on the tiles). The standout though was the Thunderstorm Shower, complete with sound and light effects to really stimulate the senses! After I’m as clean as humanly possible, it’s time to get a little messy and smear myself in therapeutic mud. This is where Angsana really weaseled their way into my heart: hard as I try, I think I am just too middleclass to be 100 per cent comfortable with another person bathing me. While I love the benefits of lotions and potions rubbed into my skin at a spa, at heart I’m only really comfortable with select individuals in very specific circumstances (none of which take place in a public place) smearing things on me. At Angsana, I’m presented with a private chamber and a pot of mud, told to massage it into my skin, and left- after 15 minutes the shower automatically turns on,
letting me really relax and not popping me out of my wet-noodle bliss with awkward stranger-fumblings. By the end, I was relaxed, blissful, and my skin felt better than a brand new baby wrapped in fur. It doesn’t hurt that the products are absolutely gorgeous- when I was done, I didn’t go running to the shower to wash off the lotions and oils used in the massage, lest I get itchy or go back to the office smelling like grass clippings or a radish. In fact, they offer a huge level of personalization, right down to the scent of the potpourri under my pillow during the massage. Combined with knowledgeable staff (the package includes a massage, which the receptionist was able to help me select based on my needs and preferences), a lovely setting and reasonable prices, Angsana may have usurped the top slot in our mental spa directory. When I go next, I’m dragging friends to stand in a thunderstorm with me! 55

What would you take with you if you had a 20 kg weight allowance and three days to get to Doha? Stuart Marshall, 38, opted to take his bike. It was a decision which probably saved his life. Cycling gives meaning to what could otherwise be a difficult time in Doha for the members of “Qatar Chain Reaction”, Doha’s own cycling fraternity. What started out as a few riders gathering together in individual groups has grown to over 300 people of different age groups from over 23 different countries. Stuart was already in training for the Ironman at Lanzarote when he was instructed by his employer to leave his home in the UK and report for work in Qatar. “When I first arrived I had a terrible time of it,” he said. “I had nowhere to swim, I was cycling on my own and the race was terrible. I nearly left the country as a result.” This year Stuart did a personal best at the same race. What made the difference was Qatar Chain Reaction. Another rider, Rachel Mayo, 31 from the UK said: “I got into it (cycling) by moving from London to Auckland and getting out of the pub culture,” he said. “Having done nothing from age 10 to 27 I took 56

This year Rachel finished a Half Iron Man in Zurich and has her eye on South Africa for next year. You don’t have to be good to ride, in fact you don’t even have to own a bike. “You just have to want to ride. If you don’t have a bike you can help out at events as a timekeeper or a marshal,” said Craig Kelly, 49, one of the founders and organizers. “The mountain bike events require more volunteers. We also try to involve local school children.” Craig is one of the more serious riders who rides long distances several times a week. He also cycles all year round. “Heat and wind are always your companion,” he said. Craig participates annually in The Ride for The Roses race which is the premier fund raising event for The Lance Armstrong Foundation.
David found QCR through a magazine and started training with them. “Over the last year I had gotten a lot heavier and a lot less fit. Previously I had put off training but going out with QCR at 4 am was great and I did about two months training for the event,” he said. The event saw David riding for eight days from Prague to Dusseldorf along the scenic route, sleeping in hostels and on mattresses in sports halls. Riding approximately 100 km a day they did a total of 920 km. Together the 270 riders raised over 200,000 for a delinquent children’s centre in Germany.
The riders get together at different times and places during the week. One group, the serious riders, leaves from the Corniche. There are several more social rides from Doha Golf Club. On weekends groups sometimes join up with riders from Dukhan. The mountain bikers meet at various venues in the desert. All the riders speak with enthusiasm of the benefits of riding with QCR. Whether it is to keep fit or to train for a specific event cycling with a group makes it easier.

COLOUR SCOPE
By Moona Masri-Whitice, MBA Dewey Color Instructor and Consultant
In the world of colour black is the most misunderstood. In reality, black is not a colour, strictly speaking: it is the absence of all colour because it absorbs all aspects of light. While white reveals, black conceals and both positive and negative meanings. In times of fear and uncertainty black has been linked to the threatening unknown, the bad experience, the dark and unseen and fear itself. In a positive state, black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge and disappear once again. It is also mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility. It can be conservative, and it always goes well with almost any colour except the very dark. It can be serious and conventional as well as sexy and sophisticated.
Nature of Black: Clothing designers have instilled a love for
the colour because black is visually slimming. The Little Black Dress is a must for virtually all women’s wardrobes. Black makes other colours appear brighter.
Black gemstones symbolize self control and resilience and are said to have protective energies in the sense that since black is the absence of light, it therefore, can be used to create invisibility and provide protection to the wearer. These stones are black tourmaline and kyanite, onyx and jet.
Culture of Black: In most Western countries, besides the
little black dress and formal tuxedos, wearing too much black has negative connotations. Black is the traditional colour of mourning. Among young people, black is often seen as a colour of rebellion and sparked a whole way of dressing called Goth (short for Gothic) and Emo (short for emotional). Black, especially combined with orange is the colour of Halloween and in early Western culture, the good guy always wore white while the bad guy always wore black, except for Batman as he wore black to lend an air of mystery to himself. In Asia and in the Gulf, black has more positive connotations. It is the colour for little boys in China and most Gulf women wear black Abayas everyday to shroud their identity from the outside world.
Using Black: Use the black in your décor to convey elegance, sophistication, or perhaps a touch of mystery. Dark charcoal gray and very dark brown can sometimes stand in for black. However, be careful using black with very dark colours because if they are too dark or too similar they will blend together. Black works best with bright, jewel-toned shades like red, blue and greens.
Put some black in your life when you want: • to become inconspicuous • to open the door to mystery • to prepare for the unknown • a restful emptiness
The more you like black, you make emotional decisions
The less you like black,
you make unemotional decisions – the more logical you are.
The Dewey Color System® is the world’s only validated, color-based, personality testing instrument. It’s the first proven system that scientifically predicts the recognized major psychometric personality factors without language. www.deweycolorsystem.com
