Happy September everyone! While we loved our sleepy summer, we’re very excited to get back into the swing of things this month. At QH, that means events, events, events! And there are plenty of exciting ones this month, with shows by DJ Ravin and the start of DJ Mark Bambach’s residency at Grand Hyatt Doha. We are also looking forward to several entertainment outlets and restaurants opening at the Renaissance Marriott Doha. The arts and culture scene in Doha also returns this month, with a Crossing Boundaries lecture at VCUQatar and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra’s first concert of the season. We're also excited for the 2011-2012 QSL season to start this month. We hope you have a fabulous time getting your groove back this month. At the very least, go outside. It’s time to enjoy the sunshine again! This month also marks the finale of the very first Qatar Happening – Creative Commons Qatar photo contest. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who entered the contest. It was tough to choose just one winner out of the 79 entries we received. Congratulations to our winner, George El Adaimi. Check out his beautiful photo on this month’s cover. Eid Mubarak!

RECOMMENDS

Feeling the need to spoil yourself? Try some of our new favourite things.

Fluid Lines Bright Eyes

Scrub-a-Dub

To instantly perk up tired eyes, pick up a Benefit Eye Bright Pencil. This chubby crayon-like eye pencil brightens up eyes and makes you look more awake. Simply rim sleepy eyes with this light pink pencil and no one will be able to tell you didn’t sleep a wink last night. The delicate, creamy pink shade is more subtle than white liner but works just as well, if not better. Stroke some on as the last step in your morning beauty routine to complete your look. Benefit Eye Bright Pencil is available at Sephora stores in Villaggio Mall and Landmark Mall.

Bobbi Brown Brightening Gentle Cream Cleanser rids skin of dirt and residue with its creamy formula. This decadent face wash gently exfoliates skin, in addition to improving skin tone and texture. Perfect for removing makeup at night or refreshing skin in the morning, this face cleanser feels soft and smooth, not grainy like other exfoliating face washes. Use twice daily for a brighter complexion and soft skin. Bobbi Brown Brightening Gentle Cream Cleanser is available at 4U Perfumery in City Center Mall.

Love the precise lines liquid eye liner can give you but want a slightly softer look? Try MAC Fluidline. The gel formula allows users to draw an exact line, like liquid liner, but has a silkier, softer finish. This smudge-proof liner is ideal for hot, humid days. This budge-proof liner is best for those with high confidence in their liquid liner skills because once it’s on, this liner is staying put all day and long into the night. Available in a variety of smoking hot shades, we fancy the inky blue Waveline and the deep plum Macroviolet. MAC Fluidline is available at MAC stores in Villaggio Mall and City Center Mall.

Smooth Strands Achieve silky smooth hair with L’Occitane En Provence Smoothing Gloss. This smoothing cream helps repair dry and damaged hair with five essential oils and strawberry AHA. Use a dab of this anti-frizz serum on wet hair prior to blow drying in order to tame hair or glide a small amount through the ends of your hair after styling in order to tame fly-away hairs and add shine. This gloss does double duty, repairing your hair to its former glory while also helping you maintain frizzfree hair. L’Occitane En Provence Smoothing Gloss is available at L’Occitane En Provence stores in Villaggio Mall and Landmark Mall.

Our handy calendar is now detachable. Tear out the September Highlights! 8

QH RECOMMENDS Bouncing Beyonce Beyonce’s newest album 4 features hot lyrics and old-school beats. Beyonce sings every note with passion and a fierce attitude that elevates her music beyond normal club hits. This two-disc album features four versions of Beyonce’s hit anthem Run the World (Girls), plus the standout breakup track Best Thing I Never Had. While there is no track that compares to Single Ladies,, this album is full of songs that will make you want to hit the dance floor and stunning ballads, such as the powerful I Was Here. Beyonce’s maturity can be heard throughout the themes on this album but her music remains, as always, perfect for shaking your bootylicious booty to. Beyonce’s 4 is available through Sony Music.

Pizza Party If you’re in need of a quick fix for that rumbly in your tumbly but are sick of processed fast food (or if you’re like us, just always craving an epic slice of pizza), head on out to Bread and Bagels and sample their scrumptious Turkey Fiesta Gourmet Pizza. Baked to crispy perfection on their special thin crust, Bread and Bagels' masterpiece is a delicate but filling mix of fresh mozzarella, black olives, turkey ham and real sliced mushrooms – none of that canned nonsense! Best of all, it’s affordable and served oven-fresh in a jiff! Turkey Fiesta Gourmet Pizza is available at Bread and Bagels, located in Beach Tower in West Bay.

Sweet Smells For a scent that is both spicy and sweet, spritz on Jo Malone Lime Basil and Mandarin Cologne. This cologne is a cult favourite for a reason - the unique combination of scents, the powerful but not overwhelming strength and the sweet, lingering smell of crisp basil, fresh lime and juicy mandarin. This fragrance is zesty, fresh and undeniably unforgettable. Spray some on your pulse points when you want to feel powerful and special, because that’s exactly what this scent is. Jo Malone Lime Basil and Mandarin Cologne is available at the Jo Malone store in Villaggio Mall.

Sensational Smiles To instantly brighten your smile while adding a touch of glamour to your lips, try Bourjois Smile Enhancing Gloss. This brand-new product comes with a tooth-brightening gel on one end and a light, non-sticky lip gloss on the other side. The lip gloss also includes “white focus” pigments, which are designed to enhance the brightness of your teeth. This lip gloss is soft, with a subtle colour (the beige shade is a great neutral shade). The combination of the brightening gel and the “white focus” pigments also freshen your breath. This lip gloss is ideal for busy multi-taskers. Bourjois Smile Enhancing Gloss is available at Faces in Villaggio Mall and Landmark Mall.

The Jazz Club, located in Oryx Rotana, is currently the only live jazz club in the country. The lounge pleases jazz lovers regularly, with great performers taking the stage every season. QH: What inspires you as musicians?

The five members of the band have enjoyed successful individual careers outside of Qatar and, in January 2011, they came together to form the 101 Jazz Band. Since then, the group has become one of the most cherished acts in Doha’s nightlife scene. Every night, they play to a full house, giving jazz lovers plenty to celebrate.

Philip: We have an incredible respect for each other. Even though we haven’t known each other for long, we all have a special connection and it shows when we are on stage. The audience can perceive it. There is no ego between us. We all like each other and enjoy each other’s talents.

QH: What kind of music do you generally listen to? Bernard: I like mainstream jazz. Tahirih: I like listening to jazz, soul, R&B and classic music. Lucas: Gospel and mainstream jazz.

Philip: I like old-school music in general. I also like listening to gospel. Ibrahim: Frank Sinatra, Villalobos and classic music.

QH: What is the single most difficult challenge jazz musicians face today? Ibrahim: Having a good crowd that really appreciates your music, I think, is a challenge every musician faces. Jazz is not as popular as other genres, such as pop music or techno. Therefore, it is harder for jazz musicians to be very successful. However, so far we have been very lucky that people like our music. We haven’t really faced a big challenge here in Doha. Philip: Facing a new audience, as is our case in Doha, is always a challenge. But I do believe when people see a live jazz performance the feeling is different and they like it. We show what jazz is all about and the audience responds to it. Tahirih: For a musician, improving their craft and getting better every day is definitely a challenge. QH: Do you have any advice for young musicians? Philip: Musicians should appreciate what they do and take pleasure in the instruments they play. All musicians need to be open to changes and listen to any type of music and learn from it.

Tahirih: Not to be afraid of showing their true feelings and sharing them with the audience. Musicians should not be so conscious of what they feel and they just should let themselves go and get caught up in the moment. Bernard: The best advice I can give any musician is that if they don’t feel like ‘wow, I am on a stage’ every time they perform, then this is the wrong career for them. Internationally renowned DJ Mark Bambach is set to make his grand return to Doha this month. QH: How did your move from Australia to London influence your taste in music/style of DJing? MB: Hugely, and I can’t stress that enough. I am so grateful for the 22 years I spent in London. I learned so much about musical genres that never really made an impact on me in Australia. Like funk, soul, rare grove and underground New York disco. Disco was really the beginning of house music, using the extended 12” mix as a DJ tool to mix and blend tracks together. This knowledge for me is a very important part of my style. I’ve been collecting underground disco for about 25 years, and one of my favorite producers of all time is the legendary Patrick Adams from New York. And labels such as Salsoul, Prelude

QH: Who are some of your musical influences? MB: Definitely Patrick Adams as I mentioned. Prince, Chaka Khan, Ashford & Simpson. Plus, I love 80s electronic music by Human League, Japan, Kraftwork and Africa Bambaataa, and I’m a massive Kate Bush fan as well. So I have a few different influences.

MB: Being paid to do what I love as a job I’m super grateful for that. Seeing people's reactions when you drop a big track - I never get bored of seeing that. And, of course, travelling and working all over the world. There’s certainly nothing at all uninteresting about what I do. QH: You’ve remixed a lot of songs from popular artists such as Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys. Which remix is your favorite?

QH: What’s your favourite thing about being a DJ?

One night will be an R&B, funk and soul night. Another night will be dedicated to Qataris being able to hear their favourite tracks of the moment. And a third night, I’ll be steering clear of what other places in Doha are playing and sticking to a more purist house set - finding that mix of playing what people want to hear and also pushing new music that otherwise people wouldn’t get to hear in Doha. When I DJ'd in Doha a few months ago at Crystal and Wahm, it was nice to have people approach me thanking me for playing something different. I aim to give people what they want at Rocca and put Grand Hyatt Doha on the map musically. QH: What are some of the milestones of your career? MB: In 1995 and 1996, I was asked to mix and compile two dance albums for Sony Records - that was pretty overwhelming so early on in my career. More recently, remixing tracks for such big pop stars has been memorable. QH: Where do you see yourself in five years? MB: I like to live in the day really, so it’s hard to say. Hopefully still doing what I love - playing music and making people smile and dance.

This month, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra begins another season, with new music director Michalis Economou at the helm. Economou speaks with QH about what guides him as a conductor and why he chose Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet for their Sept. 24 concert.

QH: You will be conducting the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time since being named music director. How do you feel? ME: I feel honoured. The fact that I will be working with top-level, young musicians is a motivation for me to try harder. Music is a language that is common to every human being. It can create the most beautiful emotions and feelings; we should take advantage of this because our world can become better with music. I will do my best to make this orchestra go a step forward. A music director is not only responsible for drawing the best music out of his members but also bringing out their best souls. We need peace, love and positive energy in our world.

QH: What can people expect from the upcoming concert? ME: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet’s opening night includes a few masterpieces of the international repertoire. The first part of the concert will start with El Saedi’s Festive Overture, following the tradition of this orchestra to perform Arabic music as often as possible. This is a tradition I will continue to maintain, as I believe that each orchestra needs to focus on the culture of the country to which it belongs. The first part will also include Beethoven’s second symphony, a youthful and brilliant composition. The second part of the concert is dedicated to Russian music, playing Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, a famous symphonic poem that explores the

orchestra’s dynamic and technical ranges. The closing work will be Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. This fantasy-overture is one of the masterpieces of the 19th century and is based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name. QH: Tell us more about the Overture-Fantasia. ME: Tchaikovsky manages to create a dramatic atmosphere of Shakespeare’s play into a clean academic “sonata-allegro” form. The second theme that represents the love of Romeo and Juliet is one of the most wonderful melodic and harmonic lines in the entire music anthology. This work is unique because “love” couldn’t be described any better in the field of art.

QH: Why did you choose this as your first performance in Qatar? ME: Romeo and Juliet’s love can be our light, inspiration and example for a whole season, and ideally, for a whole life.

QH: Are you going to be playing Tchaikovsky true to its form, or will you be bring in a little of flair of your own? ME: As a composer, I love to respect every single detail of the score. However, if all conductors performed Tchaikovsky the exact same way, then there would be no reason for new concerts! My feelings and emotions always guide my performances. The magical thing is that emotions differ from rehearsal to rehearsal and from performance to performance … This is what makes music a unique art. For me, a conductor that performs specific music always in the same way is not a conductor. He is a CD player. QH: How will the concert program appeal to the audience? ME: People in the audience will have a chance to travel between Arabian culture, German tradition and Russian drama. I believe it is a nice contrasting program that leads nicely from classical highlights to romantic and contemporary repertoire. I am sure this musical performance will

achieve the art’s basic aim, which is to create a variety of feelings and motivate the audience. QH: Who has been your musical inspiration? ME: My teachers Theodore Antoniou and Lukas Foss. Additionally, all my students at the university and in my conducting classes were able to teach me how to become a better person and a better musician every day. A pure student’s soul can inspire me more than any teacher or professional musician can. QH: What major musical influences have you incorporated into your style? ME: It is Greek folk music and poetry; it’s a kind of art that cannot be put onto paper because notes are not enough to describe its real emotions. Our grandfathers taught it to us and hopefully we will pass it on to the next generations too.

QH: What are the qualities one needs to be a great conductor? ME: For me, it is passion, ethos and love for real music. Unfortunately, there is no book that can teach you these qualities. You have to seek for them elsewhere. QH: How has the experience working with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra been so far? ME: Truly amazing. This orchestra consists of musicians that come from different cultures and schools. What they have in common is their youth and brilliant sound, as well as their passion for life and music. I feel so lucky to be part of this wonderful group of people. QPO’s first concert of the season, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, will take place Sept 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Opera House in Katara Cultural Village. Tickets can be purchased at Virgin Megastore or the Opera House. 29

Celebrated designer Sonia Ashour will speak during the Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series at VCUQatar. Ashour, founder of AG Design Consultants, will be at VCUQatar Sept. 21 to speak on Cultural Identity: “Crossing the boundaries of cliché.” QH spoke with Ashour to find out what inspires her and her advice for the next generation. SA: My interest in design has a long history prior to graduating high school; however, my choice to study Interior Architecture SA: The ability to “create positive change” came as a natural result of living in Saudi Arabia. The majority of our life is held through design fascinated me then and indoors. This is due to harsh weather still excites me today. Human creativity is conditions, in addition to strict cultural and limitless. Channeled in the right direction, religious norms. There is never to fit us and no one else - interiors that are sensitive to our cultural needs, respectful of a dull day. You are constantly learning and growing - not only as a designer but also as our religious beliefs and yet, with the times. a human being. This profession, however, is not for the weak at heart. It requires a lot of My interest in Hospitality Design again stems from living in Saudi Arabia. We, as courage and perseverance. It comes with a lot of heartache, yet the reward is immense. a unique Arab experience – a combined celebration of Western technology and Eastern sentiment. Also, as Saudi Arabia is a very vast country and the size of its projects immense, it seemed only natural to study hospitality design. In hospitality design, you are trained to tackle large spaces and complex and diverse activities, to include food and beverage, meeting rooms, spa facilities, entertainment venues and commercial outlets, all in high style and luxury. This training allowed me to tackle large scale projects in Saudi Arabia with more confidence, know-how and, of course, style. QH: What motivated you to help to co-found the department of Interior Design at Dar Al-Hekma College in Saudi Arabia? SA: I was younger then (30) and had just come back from London and the U.S. with five years of practice but no experience in teaching. The head of the school then met me at a gathering in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia and heard me talk. She offered me a position and a free hand to create a curriculum tailor-made to fit our needs.

This was too exciting of an offer to let go. It was a dream job - pulling in our own culture to create a unique rooted curriculum. The students and I enjoyed every minute of it and we all put in 500 per cent and the result was immense. The students were driven and excited to learn and the work produced was breathtaking. By the end of the first semester of the first year, they were appraised at a third-year level and I, of course, was so proud.

Photos provided by AG Interior Design Consultants

QH: You also teach and advise at several universities. What’s your favourite part of lecturing? SA: I don’t think I have a favourite part. Teaching is one of the most rewarding and yet challenging professions. It’s an adrenaline rush from the beginning of each class until the end, it’s high in positive energy and the best massage for your soul. Although it is supposed to be a selfless profession, the reward is so much that it feels selfish. The love and respect you earn from your students is priceless, yet the best part of it all is the outcome. It never fails to amaze me what they are capable of and it makes me so proud that the result might have something to do with my input. I admit with each class or workshop I have tackled that their outcome far exceeds what I could ever have done. QH: Your career is quite wellrounded. What else would you like to accomplish in the future? SA: Ironically, I don’t believe I have accomplished anything yet. I have been learning and experiencing myself and it’s

only once I am able to give back that I can say that I have accomplished something. My dream is to establish a design program that is “culturally in-tuned” - a program which addresses the needs of our communities with high regard to culture, tradition and religious values. We are a vocal tradition and even the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad by recitation. We are also storytellers and I would like to explore this direction with students further ... it has worked wonders in my classes and workshops. It keeps the students alert and connected and, most of all, they feel rooted, as the subject matters are familiar to where they come from. In an era of technology, our children no longer TALK. They do not communicate. This program is committed to teach them how to communicate and how to voice their opinions. I dream of a series of children books, dedicated to Islamic art and design education. Art is a universal language and does not discriminate. It opens dialogue among people and will encourage understanding of cultures. We lack cultural awareness and true insight into our Islamic heritage. These activity books are dedicated to educate our children on their heritage. With knowledge, there is power and my dream is to empower us as people and what better place to start than with our children. VCUQatar has [agreed] to take on the Children Islamic Art book as a project this fall. I am very excited about this and hope this opens a door for my attempt to give back.

QH: You spoke at VCU Qatar’s 2011 commencement. What was your advice to the graduating class? SA: That was the hardest speech I ever had to give. I had to bare my soul and advise on life […], so I decided to advise on what I know and that is my love for my home and for this region. I advised them to take charge and believe in themselves that they are not the audience but are key players who will shape the future of this region. I reminded them that they are a new breed of Arab Muslims. They are leaders and [I told them] to be proud of who they are and where they come from. Not to be influenced by others and to remain true to themselves. I advised them to safeguard their heritage, to shed what is not theirs and to be believe in their own and to remember that “the beauty of a garment is in the authenticity of its fabric. Rooted and true.”

Sonia Ashour will lecture at VCUQatar Sept. 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the atrium at VCUQatar. This free event is open to the public. For more information, contact 4402-0555 or visit www.qatar.vcu.edu.

Give Pets a Second Chance By Sydnee Bryant

Crazy about kittens and puppies? Looking to take home a furry friend? Whether you are considering adopting a new pet or simply wish to volunteer some of your time to making the lives of some cuddly creatures better, Doha is full of opportunities to make a difference in the life of an animal. QH spoke with Abdullah Al-Naemi, the man behind two such ventures.

W

hen we first meet Abdullah Al-Naemi, we are struck by his pure, genuine love of animals. The Qatari native blossoms before our very eyes as he begins to speak passionately about his love for cats and dogs. Only 27 years old, Al-Naemi has already channeled his adoration of animals into two successful ventures, the non-profit 2nd Chance Rescue shelter and the independent business Parkview Pet Center.

mother, who observed Al-Naemi buying vaccines and vitamins for the dogs he was taking care of at 2nd Chance Rescue. She suggested he open a small clinic to pay for some of his bills. The idea led to Parkview Pet Center, one of the biggest veterinary clinics in Doha.

2nd Chance Rescue started three years ago when Al-Naemi began rescuing abandoned dogs from the street and caring for them at his family’s farm. While his farm has the space to house 20 dogs, the shelter is currently over capacity, with more than 40 dogs living at 2nd Chance Rescue. All of those dogs are waiting to be re-homed with caring families.

Parkview Pet Center, which opened July 23, includes a retail store filled with a French brand of pet supplies. The centre will also offer high-quality, holistic pet food. In the future, Al-Naemi plans to open a daycare centre at Parkview Pet Center.

Al-Naemi’s passion for caring for the animals at 2nd Chance Rescue led to his decision to open Parkview Pet Center, a business that offers veterinary services, boarding and grooming services for cats and dogs. “I needed something that would help me improve the animal shelter I have at my farm and do something where I can help more animals than now because I think a veterinary clinic […] will help a lot with the cases we see and will help me do more work with animals,” Al-Naemi said. The idea came from his

The bright, airy centre is inviting and spacious. On the main floor, there are several examination rooms, plus rooms for x-rays and other tests. On another floor, a group of cats are boarding at the centre. These cats stay in spacious four-storey pens that interconnect, allowing the cats plenty of room to stretch and play. There is also a room

for dogs who are boarding at the centre. The large centre also accommodates several cats and dogs from 2nd Chance Rescue that are up for adoption. “Parkview Pet Center became like a window for 2nd Chance Rescue,” Al-Naemi said. Housing some of the animals at Parkview Pet Center will likely increase the amount of animals adopted. In the two weeks following the centre’s opening, five dogs were adopted, which is much more than usual, said Al-Naemi. Al-Naemi hopes that more people will adopt dogs and cats in the future to lessen the strain on 2nd Chance Rescue. “I’m hoping in the future I’ll develop the farm and expand the facility there to accommodate more pets but this will take more time,” Al-Naemi said.

that when they leave, they leave as healthy as possible,” Al-Naemi said. The dogs are also spayed or neutered before they leave 2nd Chance Rescue. Spaying and neutering cats and dogs is the best thing an owner can do for their pet, said Al-Naemi. Adoptive parents are asked to cover the cost of vaccinating and spaying or neutering their pet in order to demonstrate practical commitment to the health and care of their new pet.

“It’s like you’re adding a new family member.”

There is no fee for adopting a dog through 2nd Chance Rescue. There is, however, a screening process for potential adoptive parents. “We try to avoid giving pets to people who will not let the pet be indoors with the family, because what we are trying to do is give the dog the best chance they can get with a family,” Al-Naemi explained. The screening process includes an interview and a home check. Although the two ventures are separate, all of the dogs staying at 2nd Chance Rescue receive blood work, vaccines and any services they need at Parkview Pet Center. “We really take care of them. We make sure

People must also decide if they are truly capable of taking care of a pet before they buy or adopt one because it is a long-term commitment. “It’s like you’re adding a new family member,” Al-Naemi said.

If you are not able to adopt a pet, there are still several ways you can help improve the lives of the cats and dogs living at 2nd Chance Rescue. While Al-Naemi does not accept cash donations, he does accept donations of toys or pet food. Animal lovers can also volunteer their time walking and playing with dogs at 2nd Chance Rescue or Parkview Pet Center. 2nd Chance Rescue is also looking for a volunteer to help with website design or photography.

New to Qatar? Arriving in a foreign country can be a little intimidating. Leaving your homeland to work and live with people from a different culture can be a big adjustment. But there are ways to make the transition a little easier. QH tells you where you can learn everything you need to know about the new country you soon will be calling home.

Q

atar is a very unique country, where many cultures converge. Understanding the idiosyncrasies and habits of Qatar is essential for anyone to appreciate the wonders of the country. An orientation workshop could be the right answer for you to start the adjustment process and tune in with the customs and ways of Qataris.

WELCOME TO QATAR WORKSHOP In 2007, Stenden Institute developed a workshop to teach expats in Qatar the dos and don’ts of the country, while also giving participants a comprehensive overview of the country. In the beginning, the workshop was mainly aimed at busy executives in order to make their stay easy and enjoyable. Now, the institute wants to share the information gathered throughout their years of teaching the workshop with the entire expat community in Qatar. The institute is planning to condense what was a six-hour workshop into a 90-minute session. The workshop will tackle general background information on Qatar, including the history of the country from the Ottoman period up until

the present day. Participants will also get a crash course on Islam and the ruling family. The instructors will provide you with information on the tribal structure in the past and its influence in the present.

STENDEN INSTITUTE WILL ALSO BE TEACHING ARABIC COURSES Arabic I (32 hours)

In addition, participants will learn about marriages within Qatari families and the culture of hospitality and the clothing of Qatari nationals. A short discussion will take place on social trends and attitudes on the transition that took Qatar from an unknown small country to one of the richest in the world. Due to this transition, the country has experienced some changes in structure, culture and the attitudes of its citizens. The discussion will help participants have a better understanding of the new Qatar. Important rules and regulations of the country will be explained during the workshop, as well as how to get a residence permit and driving licence, buying liquor, having to deal with traffic violations, and the health-care services available. All of the information taught during the workshop will be complied into an easy-toread booklet. The publication will help expats navigate through some of the trickier parts of being the new kid on the block. For more information, call 4487-8288, email instituteinfo@stenden.edu.qa, or visit the institute, which is located in the Castle Garden Compound in Al Jelaiat Street, behind Hamad Medical City (HMC).

Best

Healthy Food By Sydnee Bryant

Roundup

QH has ordained 2011 the Year of the Roundup. This means we’ll be scouting out restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and hotels all over Doha to find the best of the best in the food and beverage industry. This month, we bring you the best healthy dishes in Doha. Whether you’re hoping to slim down or simply want to increase your fruits and veggies intake, there are plenty of surprisingly healthy dishes throughout the city.

Al Liwan at Sharq Village and Spa Executive chef Hassan Abdallah whipped up a special, super healthy salad, available by request. A mix of watermelon, pineapple, green and red apples, dragonfruit, orange sections, mixed leaves and walnuts means this salad has plenty of protein and vitamin C. Plus, the walnuts will leave you bursting with energy! The tartness of this crisp salad is complemented nicely by the sweetness of the fruit. A light dressing of mustard, extra virgin olive oil and apple vinegar dressing is drizzled on top of this fresh mixture to provide an extra splash of taste. While this salad makes a lovely first course, it is also big enough to act as a nice, light summer meal. Anyone who adores fruit and the delightful combination of sharp and sweet will go nuts for this creative, healthy salad.

The Market and Spice Market at W Doha There are plenty of healthy eats to devour at the W Doha. If you’re in the mood for something substantial and spicy, head to the Spice Market for their brown rice and vegetables with egg white fried rice. This delectable dish features wild rice, baby zucchini, carrots, mung bean sprouts, squash and egg white, all tossed together to form a healthy but filling side dish. The rice is cooked with natural oils from the rice, not animal fat, ensuring that it isn’t greasy. This dish has a spicy kick, elevating what could be a boring meal to something special. As a bonus, brown rice is more filling than white rice due to its high amount of fibre. If spicy food isn’t your thing, swing by The Market, where you’ll find a delicious endive, sugar snap peas salad with parmesan dressing and herbs. This incredible salad is crisp, fresh and tangy, with a light dressing and sharp parmesan taste. This is the perfect summer salad, with plenty of fibre to fill you up without going overboard on calories or fat.

Grand Gourmet at Wyndham Grand Regency The chefs at Grand Gourmet are fabulous at whipping up dishes that are both healthy and hearty. Their grilled vegetables cake with garden basket and pesto sauce is a surprisingly delicious take on grilled veggies. With red bell pepper, eggplant, onion, zucchini, dried oregano, fresh mint and feta cheese, this slightly sweet vegetable dish is a great way to fill up on veggies. The sweetness of the grilled vegetables is contrasted with a fresh, savoury taste to delight your tastebuds. For a heart-happy main course, try the fish fillet with roasted hazelnuts on brown bread. This dish consists of a piece of white fish fillet on a piece of brown bread, topped with chopped up hazelnuts and a delectable lemon sauce. The sauce is made of only lemon juice and salt, ensuring it is light on calories but heavy on taste. The soft, perfectly cooked fish contrasts nicely with the crispy bread and crunchy hazelnuts. This unique idea gets points for creativity and taste.

Al Mourjan at Doha Corniche and Souq Waqif Lebanese food is always fresh and nutritious but this restaurant really shines when it comes to healthy salads. Al Mourjan’s Lebanese salad is full of crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, firm cucumbers and slivers of onion. This tangy, delicious salad uses organic ingredients for a salad that is always fresh and full of vitamins. Or get your veggie fix with some fabulous fattouch. Even the pickiest fattouch lover will be delighted with Al Mourjan’s fattouch. This delectable, healthy salad reaches new heights of tastiness because of the unique dressing, which consists of Al Mourjan’s own mix of lemon, vinegar and pomegranate juice. There’s no better way to get the recommended five servings of veggies a day than with this salad, which has cucumbers, tomatoes and crisp lettuce, plus onion and pomegranates. Tangy and sweet, this fattouch is health food at its best. As a bonus, the pomegranates provide a good dose of antioxidants.

D’Chopstix at Holiday Villa D’Chopstix offers plenty of healthy options on their menu. The yasai salada features cherry tomatoes, yellow capsicum, carrots, cucumber, shredded red cabbage and frisee and iceberg lettuce. The light soy dressing provides a nice balance of sweet and sour. For something warm and delicious, try charsiew paw, a light, fluffy bun with a slightly sweet chicken and honey filling. The perfectly cooked bun is a great healthy snack – hearty and full of protein. Another healthy dish is the steamed Dim Sum platter, with siew mai, har kaw and bean curd skin rolls. The har kaw dim sum is properly cooked, with a delicate texture on the outside and the thin outside layer intact. The shrimp is tender and the variety of dips allows you to customize the flavour to your liking. The chewy texture of the steamed bean curd skin rolls are complemented by a hint of spiciness. The siew mai is a hearty course, with chunks of chicken and shrimp. For a healthy dessert, try sago, a chilled concoction consisting of coconut milk, ice, tapioca balls and honeydew. This fresh, delicately sweet dessert makes a nice, light end to any meal.

Arabian Delights By Mary Sebastian

In the Middle East, the Arabic word wafi usually means fulfillment or to be complete. It’s also the synonym for being reliable or trustworthy. So, it’s no surprise that the aptly-named Wafi Gourmet exudes credibility and gives a sense of contentment to its customers, from the satisfying service and delighting dining atmosphere to the upscale deli experience.

and fattouch. From the first bite, it’s obvious their starters and dips are lip-smacking good! Of course, no Lebanese feast is complete without the hot mezze platter and classic Lebanese mixed grill. For our next course, we eat kibbeh (Arabic meat patties) with a tangy twist. Soaked in salty laban, the kibbeh is succulent and moist, with a nutty punch to it, thanks to the pine nuts! And as fast as it appears on our table, it disappears even quicker, leaving us with a heady aftertaste of spices and wanting for more. As we dig our forks into the soft and aromatic Lebanese kebabs, Wafi Gourmet’s executive chef Muhammad Hussaini comes around to say hello. As we chat with the boisterous chef, we find out he has been in the culinary industry for more than 18 years, even though he is only 32 years old! Ask him about his favourite dish at the Wafi, and with a smile, the reticent chef says, “I love all my dishes!” Pester him a little further, and Hussaini will swear by the okra stew. As he bids us bon appétit, we get busy with our next serving of classic Arabic sweets. One look and our stomachs find the ultimate nirvana. Our waistlines

will never forgive us, but when you are facing a plate of luscious and fragrant desserts, who cares! The pineapple pudding is divine, and has a texture quite similar to the French apple crumble. But the taste of this dish is far superior, with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg. The pineapple is cooked to perfection – moist, almost melting into my mouth. My partners-incrime describe the pudding as a “burst of happiness.” The kaitaif is glorious. The pastry, with cream cheese filling, is deep fried and immersed in rose-infused sugar syrup before it hits the plate. The aftereffect is gorgeous and appealing to all senses. This one, as sinful as it sounds, is a must try! As we finish off the last morsel, all we can feel is contentment from eating a great meal in a relaxed ambience similar to an upscale market place. The great thing about Wafi Gourmet is that the deli-style shop gives you a great choice to jump in for a quick midday snack, or even a work lunch. And while you are already there, you might as well do some grocery shopping and fill up your cart with fresh veggies, gooey, syrupy jams, aromatic coffee grinds … the list goes on, the possibilities endless. Wafi Gourmet is located at the Landmark Mall, and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. They also provide catering services. For more information, contact Nicolas Saliba at 4412-9233.

Cold Comforts By Mary Sebastian

There is something very comforting about having a cup of frozen yogurt on a hot and humid afternoon. So when a viral YouTube video about penguin-spotting in Qatar turned out to be a promotional campaign to introduce Casa Del Gelato, the latest icy joint to hit the food scene in Qatar, the warm welcome it got was only natural.

I

enjoy ice cream and I love frozen yogurt. So when my editor asked me to review Casa Del Gelato, a place that offers both versions of cold delights, I couldn’t be thankful enough! After all, who in their right minds would turn down such a grand offer to try out these comforting goodies, especially during summer? Casa Del Gelato’s main attractions are its Italian ice cream and frozen yogurt. But don’t let the minimalist menu fool you. They love to create new flavours. Currently, they have more than 30 different varieties of frozen yogurts and more than 10 versions of gelatos on their constantly growing menu. Factor in the 22 different dry toppings, eight fruit toppings and six flavours of syrups and the combinations are endless.

The best part of the deal is that you can have as much as you want without worrying about the pounds. Casa Del Gelato uses low-fat milk and yogurt to make all their frozen delights. Fancy!

While spending at least two hours in Casa Del Gelato, I sample about half of the combinations listed on their menu. Of all the gelatos that I try, the lemon ice cream and the peanut butter gelato blow my socks off. The lemon ice cream is the perfect symphony to the summer drought, with a nice citrus punch to it; and the peanut butter ice cream is just pure pleasure. Creamy, nutty and lip-smacking, the peanut butter ice cream is perfect with crushed Oreo toppings, or even just regular fresh blackberry, both available at Casa Del Gelato. The frozen yogurts are in a different class all together. Light and frosty, I fall in love with almost all the flavours on their menu – regular or with toppings, these icy

glees were heaven-sent. Available in small, medium or large servings, the highlight of the experience is that you get to self-serve. Pick your size and choose your flavours; you can keep building it up as much as your cup can hold – QR 10 per 100 gm (isn’t that glorious!). Then, you move onto the toppings, weigh and pay, and you’re ready to go. It is difficult to choose my personal favourite as I enjoy almost every single flavour I try. But if I have to pick, it would be the banana yogurt. Frosty, fruity and an absolute pleasure for your stomach, I have to say I haven’t enjoyed banana like this in a long time! Overall, my experience with Casa Del Gelato is chilly and sweet. There’s no better way to put it.

The Casa Del Gelato is located on Al Jazeera Street, next to Lumiyah Restaurant, Bin Mahmoud. Log on to their website www.casadelgelato.com to get your free voucher and try their frozen yogurts.

Protect

Your Pearly By Sydnee Bryant

Whites

A person’s smile is usually the first thing others notice about them. But maintaining a set of white, healthy teeth isn’t always easy to do without a little professional help. QH consults Dr. Rami Shinnawie, DDS, managing director of Doha Dental, for ways to keep teeth bright and healthy.

H

aving a healthy set of teeth is important. Neglecting your teeth and gums can lead to cavities, gum disease, gingivitis or tooth decay, all of which affect your smile and may even lead to serious health problems down the line. Practise good oral hygiene and not only will you prevent tooth and gum calamities but you will also have a stunning smile.

A big part of having a beautiful smile is having teeth that are not only healthy but also stain-free. Many factors contribute to dark spots on your pearly whites, including smoking and drinking coffee, tea or soda. Once these stains are on teeth, they can be tricky to remove. The best way to whiten teeth? In the dentist’s chair. A dentist can give you professional whitening that will remove deep stains and instantly brighten your teeth. Just how many shades brighter your teeth become depends on a variety of factors, including if there are stains inside or outside teeth, said Dr. Rami. While there are a variety of professional whitening systems, Dr. Rami prefers to use the Zoom! teeth

whitening system. The process usually takes about an hour. Dr. Rami covers the patient’s lips and gums, exposing only the teeth. He then applies the Zoom! whitening gel on the patient’s teeth and directs the Zoom! light at the patient’s teeth for 15 minutes. When the time is up, Dr. Rami removes the gel from the patient’s teeth and cleans their teeth before reapplying the gel. This process is repeated three times. When it is finished, the patient’s teeth will be instantly whiter. Although it is impossible to predict just how much whiter teeth will become, patients are generally very pleased with their results, said Dr. Rami. Dr. Rami gives patients who receive Zoom! teeth whitening trays and whitening gel to use at home every two-to-three months to maintain the results. Whitening strips are another way to maintain a professional whitening job at home. However, whitening strips are most effective after a professional whitening treatment. Whitening strips are best for maintenance, said Dr. Rami, as they might not get heavy stains off of teeth to the

DR. RAMI’S TIPS ON HOW TO MAINTAIN GOOD ORAL HYGIENE:

• Go to a dentist every six months to protect your smile. Doing so will allow your dentist to catch any problems before they become bigger (and more expensive). • Brush teeth twice a day. Clean your chompers in the morning and at night before going to sleep. • Don’t rush – brush teeth for at least two minutes every time. • If you are whitening your teeth, pick an electric toothbrush over a conventional one. Using an electric toothbrush can help remove surface stains on teeth. • Change your toothbrush every three months. Yes, this goes for electric toothbrushes too. Toss the head every 90 days and replace it with a new one. • Floss once a day. Floss can reach in between teeth, where a toothbrush can’t. • Be cautious with mouthwash. It can be good because it kills bacteria but many mouthwashes have a high alcohol content, which can dry your mouth out. Stick to brands with little to no alcohol content, such as Crest Pro-Health Rinse. • Avoid drinks with a lot of sugar to cut down on cavities.

PRODUCTS TO TRY

same degree as a serious whitening treatment like Zoom! teeth whitening. But is whitening teeth safe? “It is 100 per cent safe,” Dr. Rami said. “It doesn’t affect the enamel and it doesn’t affect the teeth; nothing happens to the teeth, so it’s totally safe.” The only exception is for women who are pregnant. It is not recommended for pregnant women to use Zoom! teeth whitening or even at-home whitening strips, said Dr. Rami. A possible side effect of whitening is that teeth may become more sensitive, said Dr. Rami. If you experience any sensitivity after whitening, stop using the product immediately. Otherwise, whiten away!

If you haven’t visited Jaula Spa in Grand Hyatt Doha, you haven’t yet experienced the secrets of a truly Arabic-style spa. QH recommends some revitalizing treatments designed for men.

U

pon entering Jaula Spa, you will immediately know you have arrived at the right place to enjoy the ultimate spa experience. The design of the spa resembles the interior of a majestic Arabian palace. The delicate and sophisticated architecture of the entire facility is a blend of wooden walls and furniture, black rocks on the floors and water elements all around. The waiting area is a massive space that accommodates several extension chairs and a large pool. It is the perfect set up to start relaxing in before being escorted to one of the treatment suites. For my spa session at Jaula, I decide to try out some treatments designed specifically for men. My spa session includes an Aromatic Sea Salt Scrub, a Real Aromatherapy Experience and a Hair and Scalp Renewal treatment. After spending some quality time relaxing in the peaceful waiting area, I am shown the way to my treatment suite. My massage therapist guides me

through the different sections of the spa that lead to my private suite. I notice how vast and meticulously designed the whole facility is. The room for my special spa session is really spacious and luxurious. The suite features a changing room, shower, bathroom, a small living room and massage area. Dimmed lights and soft tunes add to the calm and soothing ambiance. One particular detail that catches my attention is the shower. Instead of a hose hanging from the top, there is some kind of a shower plate that expels water, giving you the sensation that you are under a waterfall. A robe, pair of slippers and disposable underwear are provided to wear for my treatment to enhance my comfort level. PRIOR TO THE TREATMENT The spa recommends you arrive at least 30 minutes before your treatment starts, as you can use any of the spa facilities, which include the swimming pool, relaxation area, sauna and steam room.

AROMATIC SEA SALT SCRUB This treatment is an energizing polish for the body that can be given to you by any of the professional staff of Jaula Spa. It starts with the therapist applying a scrub all over my body, including my arms, legs, back, shoulders, feet and neck. The therapist then rubs the scrub into my skin for around 20 minutes. The scrubbing is a combination of a massage and an exfoliation treatment that makes me feel incredibly relaxed. I then proceed to the shower to remove residue from my skin. The treatment boosts the look and feel of my skin, leaving it shiny and soft. Duration: 20 minutes Price: QR 325

REAL AROMATHERAPY EXPERIENCE This treatment makes me feel amazingly relaxed and helps release the stress held in my body. The therapist makes me choose from an array of different natural oils. He then proceeds to carefully apply the oil and massage each part of my body, including my neck and head. He applies Swedish and neuromuscular techniques to relieve muscular tension and help my circulation. Spa guests can choose whether they want to do the 60-minute version of this treatment or spring for the 90-minute session. Duration: 60 or 90 minutes Price: QR 595 or QR 850

HAIR AND SCALP RENEWAL After so much pampering, it’s hard to believe it can get any better but fortunately it can. The perfect ending for a pleasurable spa session is definitely a hair and scalp massage. For 20 minutes, the therapist massages my head and face applying natural oils. The combination of the oils and the slow movement of his fingers is an incredible sensation. It truly provides me with a total sense of relaxation and comfort. Duration: 30 minutes Price: QR 300

Bootcamp-style workouts are becoming a very popular form of exercise all over the world. People of all ages are fascinated by these high-intensity interval training sessions. QH spoke with Graeme Pattison, co-founder of the first bootcamp in Qatar, to find out what makes this type of workout so appealing.

T

wo years ago, British sportsman Graeme Pattison was looking for a place in Doha where he could exercise outdoors in a pleasant environment. At that time, there were not many areas that could provide him with the necessary elements to have that mix of intensive training and contact with nature. The situation rapidly changed when Aspire Park opened in 2009. The park offered Graeme everything he was looking for. It also gave him the perfect spot to teach his first bootcamp session. Since then, the program has become very successful - hundreds of enthusiasts join him every week at bootcamp.

“People are really into what we do and they really enjoy coming to bootcamp. We started as a small group, but we are a big crowd now,” Pattison said. “Most of the participants are very committed and do not miss a class. It is highly recommended to stay in the program for at least one month, but some of my students stay for much longer. It’s been a great experience.” Pattison has a degree in sports science and a background as a fitness trainer. His many years of experience in the field allow him to put together an exercise program that incorporates a mix of resistance and cardio training. The program aims to build and

maintain people’s fitness. The 60-minute outdoor group sessions are high in intensity, with small breaks to rest between repetitions. The classes are really challenging and you have to commit to giving your very best in order to get great results. The benefits of participating in bootcamp include toning, strengthening, improved physical appearance and an increase in the overall performance of your body.

THE SESSIONS One of the best aspects of bootcamp is that all of the sessions are completely different from one another. Participants will never get bored, as each class has its own particular flavour and uniqueness. The objective is to keep it varied and fresh, so your body doesn’t plateau. The hour-long session is high in intensity, with small breaks between exercises. During the session, participants do several repetitions of exercises, such as sit-ups, push-ups, jogging, running, crawling and bagslifting, among many others. “Our sessions are very dynamic and yes, we work very hard, but the fact that we do it as a group gives us the opportunity to encourage and support each other,” Pattison said. “I find some gyms are very impersonal

and people do not talk to each other, which can make you feel isolated, but at bootcamp we are like a team. The dynamic is really amazing and people just love it. I try to give confidence to each individual and make them push themselves to their limits in order to get the most out of the class.”

WHERE IS BOOTCAMP? The classes take place in two different locations: Education City and the Corniche.

Education City

The sessions at Education City take place on Sundays and Tuesdays evenings at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays evenings at 5:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Classes take place on the athletics track adjacent to Qatar Academy School and The Learning Centre.

Corniche

The sessions at the Corniche take place every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 a.m. in the small park just before the Sheraton Doha at the end of the Corniche.

The transition from hot summer fashion to breezier fall fashion doesn’t have to be hard. The key to fall fashion is layers, as the temperature can vary greatly between indoors and outside. Pick simple pieces in lightweight fabrics and neutral colours, then mix in accessories to complete your look.

READ Vogue’s September Issue. If you pick up one international fashion magazine this month, make it Vogue’s legendary September issue. This specific month is so important to fashion magazines that literary fashion staples generally make it their biggest issue of the year. Vogue’s is undeniably the most hard-core and useful of all these glamourous guides; so much that a documentary was actually filmed around the making of American Vogue’s 2007 September issue. The September issue is sure to be full of all the fashion guidance you’ll need to last you for the entire fall. Fashion icon Kate Moss graces this year's cover, enticing us to read all about fall fashion. Vogue is available at Virgin Megastore.

LOVE The Versace Destiny Precious Watch. This enchanting watch is a part of the Destiny collection, one of Versace’s best selling lines last year. This year’s version has been upgraded to become even more luxurious, while still retaining its luminous quality. An always-moving swirl of delicate precious stones, such as green emeralds or pink or yellow sapphires swish around freely under the glass, resulting in a playful but refined watch. With a lizard skin watch strap and a white mother-of-pearl watch face, this elegant watch makes a bold, colourful statement. The Versace Destiny Precious Watch is available in pink, green and yellow and can be found at Versace.

BUY True Religion Women's Halle Mid-Rise Legging Buckeye Dark. These inky blue denim leggings look exactly like sleek skinny jeans but are far more comfortable due to the special fabric used. And unlike many pairs of “jeggings,” these bottoms are slim-fitting without looking painted on. As a bonus, the cute stitching on the back pockets draw attention to your booty without making it appear bigger than it actually is. Every lady should add a pair (or five) of these hot pants to their closet because they can be worn casually on weekends or dressed up for a night out on the town. True Religion leggings are available at Salam Stores.

CARRY A chic case for your iPad, like the Gucci Black Micro GG Silicone iPad cover. Everything you carry should be deliberate and fashionable – your tech toys are no exception. Protect your iPad with a case bold enough to stand out as an accessory on its own, no purse necessary. This adorable iPad case combines tough and chic elements, with its jet black colour and delicate pattern, making it elegant enough for work but beautiful enough for everyday use. This case is suitable for the iPad 1. The Gucci Black Micro GG Silicone iPad cover is available at Gucci.

SHOP At Jo Malone in Villaggio Mall. Finally the iconic British brand Jo Malone is landing in Qatar. After months of anticipation, this supplier of scrumptious-smelling lotions, scrubs, candles and fragrances is opening in Villaggio Mall. Whether you fancy their legendary lime basil and mandarin cologne or the orange blossom body crème, you’re sure to find something that not only smells heavenly but also boosts your mood. Be sure to grab some luxury candles or linen sprays, available in uplifting scents such as grapefruit, in order to add a fashionable scent to your home. Jo Malone is located in Villaggio Mall.

The highest professional league in Qatari football, Qatar Stars League (QSL), is making its highly anticipated comeback this month. After an exhilarating season that ended last May, all of the teams are ready to give football fans more thrilling moments. The top clubs in the country will continue to seek glory during the 2011-2012 season, with hopes of being proclaimed the ultimate football champions in Qatar.

T

he 2011-2012 season of QSL is set to kick off this month for the enjoyment of football fans all over the country. After a short summer break, the 12 best teams in Qatar are ready to battle it out during the two legs of the league that will culminate with the exciting finals next April. Following the finals, the best teams will compete for the coveted H.H. Heir Apparent Cup in April 2012, and the Emir’s Cup, to be held the following month. The 2010-2011 season ended with QSL debutants Lekhwiya taking home the title of league champions after earning a total of 48 points. Their win represented a phenomenal occasion, as they were new to the league, having been promoted to the Qatar Stars League (from the second division) at the end of the 2009-2010 season.

HOW THE LEAGUE WORKS

The league consists of the 12 best teams out of the 16 football clubs in the country competing against each

other to accumulate points. Throughout the season, a total of 132 matches are played. The team that accumulates the most points at the end of the season is proclaimed the champion of the league. The league is divided into two legs - the first leg runs from September till November (with a small break in December) and the second leg runs from January till April. The top four ranked teams at the end of the season earn the opportunity to play at the H.H. Heir Apparent Cup. The two teams at the bottom of the league have to battle it out in a play-off match to remain in the QSL. The losing team is relegated to the second division. The 2011-2012 season will mark the 39th edition of toplevel championship football in Qatar. The new edition of QSL will welcome the Al-Jeish club, after they played their way into QSL by defeating Al Sailiya at the end of last season.
