CHAPTER 16
The Time Machine
Jeff’s heart raced. He didn’t expect a casual bike ride to transport him right back to his childhood 30 years ago. It was so clear: a Friday in fall right before a long, carefree weekend. Just like today. In that second, he realized everything was different, but in three decades nothing had really changed.

It’s the little things in life.
“When I was a child, I experienced a mouth injury that le my front tooth discolored. Since that accident, I have been hiding or editing my smile, afraid to show the discoloration. This year, I decided it was time to make a change and to make my smile a priority. A er my rst visit with Dr. Tesmer at Ballantyne Dentistry, I knew I had made the right decision. I immediately felt at home and knew that the entire team there cared about me. Their priority was to help me feel and look my best. We decided that four veneers were exactly what I needed to enhance my smile. I can’t explain how much this change has impacted my con dence! I am forever grateful that I took this step for myself. I genuinely can’t stop smiling!”

Tired of LosingYour Hair?
We are thrilled to present to you our annual travel issue — one of our favorite issues of the year! We have put a lot of thought and effort into this one, and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
This year, several stories in our travel section are dedicated to the Blue Ridge Mountains, a truly stunning region of the Carolinas that we believe everyone should experience at least once. We have also included some other standouts, such as Pinecone Pathways — an initiative to get people out on the trail to enjoy nature and honor the NC Year of the Trail, as well as a trip to Wilmington, NC to explore the many offerings of this lovely coastal town. We also visited Hendersonville, NC for one of our most memorable trips in a long time.
But our travel section is just the beginning. Our arts and culture section features work from the talented Renee Cloud, as well as a Picasso exhibit at the Mint and much more. We also showcase some amazing home and design spaces from Swell Decor, Tori Grace, Sara Brennan and more. We also meet the team and see the work of Tideline Pools.
And let's not forget about our food section! We take you to Bar à Vins, where you can indulge in some of the best wine and cheese pairings around. We also taste the menu at El Toro Bruto, sample some delicious matzo ball soup at Yafo, savor some El Puro paella, and enjoy cocktails from Figo36 and PARA.
We truly believe that this issue has something for everyone, and we hope it inspires you to get out and explore all that our area has to offer. Happy travels!
Sincerely,
Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

CLOUD
words SAM HUSTED / portraits JAMEY PRICE / photos of work courtesy RENEE
Cloud’s concept-centric art is guided by the intrinsic power of the written word, her own lived experiences, and the Black perspective. Language, and our innate consumption of it, is also an integral part of her work. She’s often inspired by internet comments, overheard conversations, TV advertisements, and by the people who call into radio shows. Currently the phrases “Take Care” and “Do Better” cycle through her mind on repeat.
We spoke with Cloud about her artistic process, the media she prefers, and how her art has evolved over the years.
Where did your interest in art originally come from?
It's hard to pinpoint, but I think my love for art came from visual puzzles from childhood. I was fascinated by how pictures turn into sentences when I described them to my mother. The image to language translation is the core of my artistic curiosity.
What kind of art do you personally enjoy?
I personally enjoy concept-centric art. Some of my favorite artists are Glenn Ligon, John Baldessari, Joseph Kosuth, and Lorna Simpson.
Your work is described as being heavily influenced by the power of words. In your own meaning, what is the purpose of mixing language with visual art?
Reading is a visual practice and I'm interested in exploring the connection between mark making and communication.
What personal experiences have had the most impact on the way you create art?
I entered my artistic practice through photography, documenting myself and friends while in conversation, catching the small moments when you could see words forming and falling from

C
their mouth. I moved away from working with the image after I noticed critiques were more interested in the impact of the black perspective rather than the work presented. My relationship to language as art was born out of rebellion: You can't ignore the message of the work if the work is the message. Since then, I've been toying with the greater idea of what it says versus how it says it.
What kind of medium do you use to create your art? Digital or tangible (paint, pencil, etc)?
I use it all! Sometimes I will build pieces digitally first and work with vinyl stencils to recreate and incorporate digital text with my own handwriting. My favorite tools are chunky graphite sticks, Sakura Solid Markers, and gel pens.
What do you see being the next step for you as an artist?
I'm extremely happy with where I am in my creative community. My steps moving forward are to find ways to continue to connect and reflect the world around me and understand my work and myself better through the lens of their understanding.
Do you work with, or is your art found at any Charlotte galleries or collectives?
I am the gallery manager for Goodyear Arts as well as an alumni of their residency program. You can find small samples of my work around the building.

THE GIFT OF ART
Calstain Ganda opens a gallery in Charlotte unlike any other the city has had before.
Calstain Ganda is the founder and owner of one of Charlotte’s most community focused, socially conscientious arts centers: Real African Art.
Cal started RAA with the aspiration to improve the lives of Zimbabwean and African artists and provide them with opportunities and platforms to exhibit and market their creative art work in the United States and beyond.
The types of art represented ranges from stone sculptures to wooden masks and carvings, beaded jewelry, paintings and more. The art comes from dozens of African countries including Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Ghana.
When was RAA formed?
Real African Art was officially created in October 2018. The gallery, located in the University City area, opened its doors on February 1, 2021. The core of why we created Real African Art has always been centered around the desire to provide opportunities for hardworking African artists as well as sharing our heritage and culture through art.
What interested you about operating a gallery?
Being born and raised in Zimbabwe, a nation that boasts some of the best stone sculptors in the world, I had a natural inclination
towards stone sculpting. I grew up with it. Like many others, as a young Shona teenager I once tried it, and while it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, I remain fascinated by the craft. The gallery’s opening was largely driven by the need to support artists from my hometown of Chitungwiza that had fallen on hard times because of the pandemic. With tourism coming to a standstill due to the pandemic, most of the artists that relied on selling their artworks to tourists were struggling.
Why do you think this is an important hole and niche to fill for the city (and even the state)?
African art is beautiful. Its story needs to be told. From Shona stone sculptures from Zimbabwe, beaded jewelry from Kenya to magnificent masks from Ghana, the continent has rich and diverse artwork. Having a strong connection and access to this beautiful art, whilst realizing that there are not many avenues that people in and around Charlotte can enjoy, it was a clear hole that we knew we could fill.
How do you select artists?
We have a team on the ground back home in Zimbabwe that supports and coordinates all activities with the art and artists selection. Based on what we believe our clients here in Charlotte

words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
and surrounding areas will like, we usually put together a plan of the different types of art that we want. With most of our art coming less than five miles from my childhood home, we know most of the artists that we work with firsthand.
You say your "mission is to improve the lives of your countrymen." Can you tell us a bit more about this? Most of the artists that we represent have a high dependency on tourists for the sale of their artworks. As the pandemic significantly impacted international travel and tourism, they were struggling to make ends meet. The opening of Real African Art Gallery provided them a new and direct path for their artwork to be sold in the United States! We know these artists. We pay them above fair market prices. This allows them an opportunity to take care of their families through their hard work.
How do you stay inspired in your work? We are making a difference in the lives of several people, and this is the ultimate source of inspiration in this whole project. The ability to showcase and share my culture and heritage through art and via this immaculate gallery has been equally inspirational.
The gallery is by appointment only on Mondays, Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sundays from noon to 6pm. The gallery is also available for corporate events and private rentals. Every Friday, RAA hosts a “Sip & See @ The Gallery” event.

A NEW GATHERING SPACE
With the opening of The Coterie, one of Charlotte’s fastest growing areas welcomes a yoga studio.
words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
Caitlyn Sheff’s brand new yoga studio on the West Side is the result of many hands. As the name would suggest, with 19 teachers (including Caitlyn) and 12 front desk associates, it's really the team's synergy that's central to the studio’s existence. Behind the scenes, Bob Fullwood and Wyatt Starnes of Enbloc Construction and architects Sarah Feiner and Jessica Hoke of ODA Architecture made the beautiful space a reality.
Here, Caitlyn shares her journey to business ownership, what she hopes to bring to Charlotte with The Coterie, and what to expect when you visit.
When did you decide to start The Coterie?
Going through teacher training back in 2017, my friends and I joked about opening a yoga studio together someday, but by no means did we think it would actually happen. It took until late 2021 when a studio I was working for closed permanently that I began really taking the steps toward making The Coterie a reality. I simply felt like I didn’t have a “yoga home” any longer, and the only way to find one was to build it. I started putting pen to paper, researching SBA loans and touring spaces about a month after the studio closed, and here we are now, a little over a year later.
What got you into yoga and/or movement practices?
I found myself at a yoga studio for the first time at 25. I was in
a fairly ungrounded place, struggling with disordered eating and exercising and freshly out of a long term relationship. My therapist at the time was actually a registered yoga instructor, and he really encouraged me to try, knowing it would resonate with me. To say it resonated with me really underestimates the experience. Once I found something that pulled my mindset into a healthier place, I committed fully, and I made a promise to eventually teach this practice and share everything it had done for me.
What sets The Coterie apart from other yoga studios in the Charlotte area?
This is such a great question because I don’t think it’s anything tangible. Very obviously, we aren’t reinventing the wheel, as the practice itself has been around thousands and thousands of years. I think it’s the people: Our staff is truly unbelievable. We and other studio owners I’ve connected with have a “more is more” mentality. More yoga studios means more people doing yoga. More people doing yoga is always a good thing.
Why did you decide to offer the types of yoga on your schedule?
We offer three formats at The Coterie: Prana, Power and Peace. Each was added for their own set of reasons. Prana is our vinyasa yoga format, which is where our teachers are able to showcase

their gifts… and all of these classes are individually and uniquely curated by the instructor each and every time. Power is a format that I simply love. It is a fusion of yoga and HIIT elements like jumping jacks, squats and pushups, and it is all choreographed to the beat of music. Our final format is Peace, which is our Yin format. Yin is a restorative yoga practice that is truly such a beautiful challenge for the mind. It’s scary to sit in a posture for five minutes and to be left alone with your thoughts, but in this class, the scariest things lead to the biggest breakthroughs.
How do you decide on instructors and how did you build your team?
This team is built with some of my dearest friends, mentors and inspirations. Some I have known since I moved to Charlotte, and some of them I asked on board after taking just a couple of their classes. Each and every one of our teachers is truly amazing. They have a natural way of holding space for others while pushing them toward growth in an extremely supportive way. Each front desk associate is equally incredible.
Is there anything a new visitor or member should know?
Show up as you are, please. Know that there are no prerequisites to being here or to taking a yoga class. We are literally here for you. We are here to help you grow in whatever way is authentic to you. We will meet you exactly where you are, expect nothing from you and support you always.

Experience NoDa’s neighborhood wine bar.
B“Bar à Vins is a bit like crawling into our heads; It is all of our favorite things,” says Jeff Kellogg who, along with Natalie Stewart, opened the doors to NoDa’s newest wine bar earlier this year.
With a little design help from Katy Kindred, of Kindred restaurant in Davidson, Kellogg and Stewart curated an attractive interior that melds understated elegance with a laidback approachability. Walking inside is also a bit like going over to your most effortlessly cool, slightly offbeat friend’s house, where all the decor is hip and intentionally collected, and anchored in originality.
Co-owners Kellogg and Stewart are longtime friends and wine aficionados. Stewart has been in the Charlotte restaurant scene for 15 years, primarily with Rare Roots Hospitality, the operators of Dressler’s, Fin & Fino, and The Porter’s House. Kellogg, on the other hand, spent years traveling around the U.S., working in wine programs at three-star Michelin restaurants, as well as at more casual neighborhood spots.
Both Kellogg and Stewart are sommeliers, and their experience with, knowledge of, and passion for wine is apparent in the selection available at Bar a Vins. Sippers will find a mix of old and new. There are classic legendary producers mixed with the next generation of producers, as well as larger selections of champagne, chenin, and syrah, which are personal favorites of Kellogg and Stewart. In some ways, Bar à Vins is more bottle shop than bar: Guests can choose their wine from shelves of bottles, or from a shorter menu with by-the-glass offerings. Each offering is listed at a retail price point, with a surcharge applied to customers who choose to sip at the bar.

So, how to choose? When surrounded by so many delicious options, it’s not easy. “We would recommend doing the same thing we do when we visit places with sommeliers we trust, toss them the keys,” says Kellogg. “Let us know what kind of wine you want that night, a price point, and let us bring over some ideas.” Expect to then be presented with a swell of useful information approachably presented and, perhaps, an unexpected yet delicious wine.
If nibbles are needed, take a peek at the Bar à Vins snack menu. Like the rest of the bar, the snack menu melds the indulgent and the everyday. For example, the caviar service pairs rainbow trout roe with Lay’s potato chips for a salty dose of high-low snack heaven. Other options include meat and cheese plates, olives, locally-baked Verdant bread with fluffy butter, and tinned fish.
“Our main goal was to make a fun environment for people to come and drink great wine,” says Kellogg. That’s precisely what this duo of sommeliers achieved. Visit on any night and find a potpourris of people connecting with neighbors and friends over delicious wine and comfortable digs.

EL TORO BRUTO EXPANDS
Resident Culture’s beloved taco-joint has expanded their menu and their services.
What started as a beloved taco pop-up has now become a full-fledged dinner concept. El Toro Bruto, located in Resident Culture in South End, officially launched their expanded dinner menu. The restaurant offers a full-service dine-in experience for guests.
“Since the space transforms throughout the day and the seasons, we saw the opportunity to also transform our culinary services and offer a full-service experience,” Chef Hector González-Mora explains. “We value the talent in our kitchen and so do our customers, so extending our offerings is the clear way forward.”
Since early 2022, Chef Gonzalez-Mora has brought delicious Mexican fare to Resident Culture patrons in the form
of all-day tacos, breakfast tacos, nachos, and late-night features.
His new expanded menu will have a familiar feel but will focus on concept driven dishes with authentic Mexican flavors. The new menu will offer a variety of appetizers, entrees, and sides. Some of the new offerings include: Tamarind Glazed Fish, Char-Grilled Ribeye, and Gallina al Pastor. And if you’re a big fan of their tacos, don’t worry, they’ll still be available too!
“This menu extension will be familiar, as it will have an emphasis on deeply rooted Mexican flavors like our current offerings. But in an approach that keeps the options new and seasonal,” Chef González-Mora says.

MATZO BALL SOUP
Just in time for Passover, Yafo’s three Charlotte locations will be serving up bowls of savory, comforting matzo ball soup this spring.
Made with fresh chicken stock, Yafo’s rotisserie chicken, and light, fluffy New York deli-style matzo meal dumplings, their homemade chicken
and vegetable soup is perfect for the season. New to matzo? Many describe it as similar to chicken noodle soup with thick, flavorful dumplings instead of noodles.

Principal Designer Angie Persson of Swell Décor Interior Design turns this dark house into a bright, breezy home.
IInterior design businesses are often built on word of mouth—and for good reason. As with many artists, a designer can only get so far without a loyal client base and a strong portfolio. After all, why hire a designer without trusting their eye for design? Angie Persson, owner and Principal Designer of Swell Décor Interior Design, understands this perfectly. It’s why she’s spent over two decades championing her own Scandinavian-inspired designs and building lasting client relationships at the same time. One such relationship brought her the opportunity to design this 6,200-square-foot transitional home in SouthPark.
“This is the third house I’ve worked on with these clients,” says Persson. “We have a long standing working relationship, as well as a friendship that’s been established over the years.”
Knowing her clients well made it easier to come up with a design that would highlight the home’s architecture while bringing in their preferences.
“Light and airy was their primary focus,” notes Persson. “The house had chin-high mahogany and was very dark, so the main goal was to lighten up the home by painting everything in [Benjamin Moore’s] Simply White.”
With this warm white as the home’s base, Persson could

accent the architecture of the home and bring in bits of color without detracting very much of the brightness. She started by adding black to key areas in the home, such as the foyer flooring, staircase steps, and window outlines. These windows made the view seem less obstructed while still allowing an abundance of natural light into the space—something that was key in making the white walls feel homey and not sterile.
To keep the space feeling soft and comfortable, Persson added dark-colored furniture and soft wood accents in one of
the living rooms. In the other, she brought in light blues for the pillows and greens from the plants. The fireplaces in different areas of the home also added a nice rustic touch due to their well-worn metals and light woods.
Venturing beyond the main living areas, guests will find a stunning kitchen with pristine white cabinets, as well as marbled countertops purchased from Harkey Tile and Stone. The gold lighting and plumbing fixtures add a pop of grandeur to the space and keep the eye wandering.

The private living areas tone down the white a bit by surrounding the residents with calming shades of blue. The main study in particular contrasts the rest of the home by sporting blue-gray walls and a dark wood desk—but the floor-to-ceiling windows still bathe the room in natural light.

ENDLESS SUMMER
Tideline Pools is a premier provider of new construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of swimming pools and outdoor spaces. “Our saying is, ‘Everything under the sun,’” says Ben Bryant, President of Tideline Pools. “If the project is in the yard, we will try to find a way.” Tideline services most of the Charlotte area, including Myers Park, Chantilly, Plaza, South Park, and Carmel, as well as Davidson, Cornelius, Kannapolis, Concord, and Huntersville.
No matter the project, the priorities for Tideline are always attention to detail and transparency. “Most of our clients have never had a pool or been a part of a large construction project,” explains Bryant. “This can be completely foreign territory for
them, so we do our best to help them understand the intricacy of the project from beginning to end.” Throughout the project, Tideline strives for clear and consistent communication, as well as openness pertaining to every proposal and every pivot.
A Marine Corps veteran, Bryant has an appreciation for detail that has been drilled into him with the full strength of the U.S. military. It manifests not only throughout the planning and process of each project, but also in the quality of the outcome. He is a firm believer in the transformative power of every element big or small— in an outdoor space. For example, he argues for the importance of intentional lighting, noting that it’s “essentially what brings the project to life by directing your focus to detailed

areas or leading you down a path.” He has seen firsthand how the addition of small, inexpensive fire or water features breathes life into a design, and the incorporation of height differences produces greater dimensionality.
Bryant also encourages his clients to approach their outdoor space ambitions in phases. He is a proponent of using 3D renderings to help a client imagine what their dream space looks like. Then, he works with the client to break the end product into its components and map those components into a (sometimes multi-year) timeline. As a result, seemingly unachievable spaces become reality for Tideline clients.
Then and Now
Bryant founded Tideline Pools in 2019, naming the business for areas where water currents converge. These points of convergence, known as tidelines, attract fish. Bryant envisioned creating spaces that, like tidelines effect on our finned friends, bring people together. “It's not just a pool, it's an

entertainment area for friends and family,” says Bryant.
In the years since Bryant entered the industry, swimming pools have advanced immensely, in part due to the introduction of new technology and in part due to new sustainability initiatives and directives from the Department of Energy. For example, automation systems now enable control with the press of a button, using a phone app to adjust light, heat, jets, and other settings, and single speed pumps have been replaced with more energy efficient variable-speed pumps.
Even as these evolutions change the way swimming pools and outdoor spaces operate, their purpose—at least to Bryant—remains the same. “Where I lived in Florida, most people tend to spend their days outside in their backyards,” he says. “I truly wanted to bring the idea of ‘endless summer’ a little closer to home in the Carolinas.”

TEXTURE AND TRANQUILITY
Principal Designer Gia Robinson of Tori Grace Interiors spearheaded this Steele Creek project to give her clients the tranquil bedroom they’d always dreamed of.
“While the client has always loved transitional aesthetics, we felt her inspiration photos always had a touch of Asian style,” Gia explains. “Therefore, we wanted to incorporate the two styles. The blend was seamless.”
Another must for the homeowners was to create a bed-
room retreat that felt no-fuss. One way Gia achieved this was by opting for minimal bedding with layered textures.
“Most memorable for us was finding the vintage silk screen above the bed which became the jumping off point for the design,” Gia shares.
The bed is Rowe Furniture, nightstands are Bernhardt, the rug is Safavieh, chandelier is John Richard, and the bedding is RH. — info —

THE PATH TO MOORE NATURE
In honor of the NC Year of the Trail, Moore County introduces the ultimate nature scavenger hunt, a story trail adventure, a colorful mural trail, and more.
words and photos JP GRICE
Moore County is the perfect place to spend your spring season, offering endless outdoor opportunities and stunning landscapes. The Sandhills is known for its golf courses but there are plenty of other reasons to choose to visit this area, and one of our favorites is the outdoor activities and beautiful natural opportunities. There is a wide variety of parks, nature walks, beautiful pine forests, lake trails, and so much more to explore! In honor of 2023 — the Year of the Trail in North Carolina — Moore County has come up with a novel and artistic way to get residents and visitors outside. The initiative is called Pinecone Pathways.

Pinecone Pathways. Bower's Bog Trail in Weymouth Woods. Golden hour at Aberdeen Lake. Weymouth Gardens.
Pinecone Pathways Program
The Pinecone Pathways Program launched on March 20, 2023, by the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). The project aims to activate a network of multi-use paths and trails throughout the Sandhills and encourage residents and visitors to get outside and into nature.
Until the end of May, Pinecone Pathways is running a unique nature-infused treasure hunt like no other. As you take a scenic stroll along the pretty paths, you might be lucky enough to find one of 200 hidden glass pinecones. Created by talented glassmakers from Starworks in Star, NC, the gorgeous glass gems have been carefully hidden along trails throughout Moore County. The glass-blown pinecones are limited edition, so hit the walking trails soon to claim your treasure. If you don't discover a glass pinecone, you are still guaranteed a beautiful day surrounded by nature. So take a peaceful solo walk or grab some friends and family for a hike and a picnic this weekend, and look for those sought-after colorful pinecones before they are all gone. You can also buy art from the non-profit online at their website. There are rules and bigger prizes like accommodation and gift cards if you find a pinecone, so visit their website at: www.homeofgolf.com/pineconepathwaysnc.
The Pinecone Pathways project recently launched to an amazing reception. There’s even an unofficial Facebook group dedicated to finding the unique glass pinecones chock full of tips and info from members.
Another important aspect of the Pinecone Pathways project is its focus on sustainability. The project is designed to minimize environmental impact and preserve the area's natural beauty. In addition, the project will prioritize using local materials and resources wherever possible.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Pinecone Pathways program is its potential to boost the local economy. By providing more opportunities for outdoor recreation, the project can attract more visitors to the area and support local businesses.
The Pinecone Pathways project is an exciting initiative that has already transformed Pinehurst and the surrounding area. By activating a network of multi-use paths and trails, the project will provide new opportunities for outdoor recreation, promote sustainability, boost the local economy, and improve the quality of life for residents. As the project progresses, it will be exciting to see how it evolves and impacts the community. Happy pinecone hunting!

Also, starting in April, Moore County introduces another unique trail experience. Embark on the Sandhills Story Trail Adventures and explore the magical world with Winnie-the-Pooh as your guide. Pinehurst, Southern Pines & Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has collaborated with their official Destination Storyteller Dan Dreyer to provide an interactive experience for all ages.
The Moore County Mural Trail is another activity for visitors to enjoy. Moore County features more than a dozen works of public art adding color and creativity to its towns. The highest concentration can be seen in downtown Carthage, where five murals reflecting local history, culture and lifestyle grace Courthouse Square alone. For those wanting a different and more delicious kind of trail experience, the Moore County Pour Tour and Wine Trail offer beer and wine enthusiasts some very tasty options. Simply visit one of the local favorites, grab your corresponding passports and start checking off all the wineries, shops, and breweries on the list.
NC Year Of The Trail
Why so many trails you ask? Because 2023 is the NC Year of the Trail. This year is about more than just celebrating our state's nature trails — it’s a campaign to cultivate appreciation for outdoor recreation among people from all ages, abilities and backgrounds. We believe in advancing diversity on every trail we come across, so whether you're local or visiting from elsewhere — everyone can join this movement! With such an incredible initiative underway, let's be sure to uphold responsible use of these trails while boosting tourism throughout North Carolina.
Moore County is proud to celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail with its Pinecone Pathways Program. With an extensive array of outdoor activities and natural attractions, both locals and visitors alike can explore this vibrant North Carolina county in a safe way that respects local diversity and promotes anti-littering practices. Come hike the trails — assuredly, you'll have a great time!

A BEACH ABUZZ
Explore
Wilmington, North Carolina is one of the state’s most buzzing beach towns. It’s a place known for its lively nightlife and some of the best surfing on the East Coast. With its beautiful beaches, quaint downtown, and appealing atmosphere, Wilmington is not only a popular filming location (host to television shows Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill, as well as movies Blue Velvet and The Longest Ride) but also a favorite coastal getaway for Southeasterners.
Historic Downtown and the River District
Like most cities, Wilmington has an array of neighborhoods and districts, each with its own distinct personality. To appreciate Wilmington’s history and evolution, spend some time in the historic downtown area. Laid out in 1737 and designated a National Historic Site in 1974, this district encompasses 320 blocks of 18th and 19th century buildings, Queen Anne and Bungalow/ American Craftsman style architecture, and brick streets lined with moss-draped oaks.
Leave time to stroll along the Riverwalk, 1.75 miles of wooden boardwalk that USA Today calls “America’s Best Riverfront” and features clear views of the iconic World War II battleship USS North Carolina. Lined with restaurants and bars, the Riverwalk is a great place to arrive hungry. We recommend The Pilot House for its views of Cape Fear River and the sustainable seafood selection.
Brooklyn Arts District
Just east of the Riverwalk, a hodgepodge of retired industrial buildings and former churches now house the businesses and homes that make up the Brooklyn Arts District. Recently revitalized, in part through initiatives spearheaded by local gallery and community hub Acme Art Studios, the Brooklyn Arts District is Wilmington’s destination for vintage flea markets, live performances, art shows, and contemporary luxury housing. Stop by neighborhood pub Goat and Compass for brews and live music, or Bottega Art and Wine for a more upscale happy hour.
South Front District
South of Wilmington’s historic district, the South Front District is undergoing a transformation much like Charlotte’s South End neighborhood. Following the completion of a few critical housing projects in the 2000s, this district began blossoming into a foodie’s paradise. It’s now home to celebrity chef Vivian Howard’s wood-fired pizza venture called Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria, as well as the lesser known but similarly delicious BlockTaco, whiskey and steak lover’s haven Butcher and Barrel, and funky Satellite Bar.
Castle Street and the Cargo District

For more shopping, pop into Auggie & Zo (clothing and homegoods), Crafted Outpose (local artisanal creations), and Ghosthill Press (an independent bookstore).
Oceanside
Of course, what’s a trip to Wilmington without time at the beach? Three of the closest beaches to Wilmington are Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach. Carolina Beach, known for its vibrant nightlife and vintage seaside boardwalk, also offers state park access with an incredible overlook of Cape Fear river. Kure Beach is ideal for families, with an oceanfront park, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher (named one of the best aquariums in the US by the Travel Channel), and the Fort Fisher Historic Site (where the largest land/sea battle was fought). Last but not least, Wrightsville is perhaps Wilmington’s most popular beach, in part due to its impressive surf spots and large SUP community. Take a break from the water and explore Wrightsville’s historic square, waterbird sanctuary, and nightlife, from oceanfront taverns and grills to live music at the marina.

A HOME AT THE HORSE SHOE
There’s a place smack dab in the middle of Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard where the French Broad River bends like a horseshoe, cutting sharply west and then moving slightly south before boomeranging back east. The surrounding community and local businesses have leaned into horseshoe lore, using this unexpected river shape as both a namesake and a promise of good fortune.
One such business to embrace this twist and turn of the French Broad is Horse Shoe Farm, an 85-acre riverfront estate that offers an intimate and totally unique farm stay experience. Nestled in a nook of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Horse Shoe Farm offers luxury amenities in a rustic and scenic setting.
A vein of authenticity underlies the rustic decor and iconic farm buildings throughout Horse Shoe Farm. In the 1950s, this swath of land was cleared to create pastures that would sustain a thriving cattle farm for the next 40 years. During this time, a manor house, silo, and farmhouse barn were constructed on the grounds. In the 1990s, the Mullis family
purchased the land, retiring it as a working farm and instead establishing a collector’s playground, where an enviable collection of antique cars drew crowds of collectors to the farm for semi-regular events.
Finally, in 2017, Horse Shoe Farm was passed to the Turchin family, who transformed it into a private retreat, adding to their portfolio of commercial properties in the US and furthering their connection to North Carolina. John Turchin currently sits on the board of advisers for The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University—the center was made possible through a generous endowment by the Turchin family.
Nowadays, Horse Shoe Farm functions as an ideal place to bring together family, celebrate a special occasion, get away for a spa weekend, or simply reconnect with nature. Just ten minutes away from the Asheville regional airport, Horse Shoe offers a range of spacious accommodation options—from Magnolia Manor and The Stable House, which encompass five bedrooms that can sleep 12 or more people amid a combination

of comforts like fireplaces, hot tubs, and elevated decks, to four modest cottages and a loft for smaller groups or couples. Each house has a full kitchen, living room, and dining area.
The Turchins brought their own vision and special touch to the place: Original works of art, including enormous glass pieces from a contemporary of Dale Chihuly’s, are everywhere on the property—indoors and out. Susan Turchin’s sparkling crystal sculptures are also housed all over the property, as are various luxury elements, like large soaking tubs in the houses, a sauna, a large heated outdoor pool, and an incredible spa.
Outside, walk the property from your house and you’ll see chickens pecking around the grounds, and horses, goats, and ducks sharing space in the pasture. Next to the pasture is The Stable Spa.
The Spa boasts a comprehensive menu of luxe services—from bespoke body and facial treatments to wellness classes. Located inside a large and beautifully renovated barn, The Stable Spa is open to the public by appointment as well as to Horse Shoe Farm guests. Each spa room is behind original stable doors. Relax with a deep tissue massage, specialty massage (such as a pregnancy or oil massage), foot therapy, facial massage, or acupuncture treatment. Or, use your escape at the Farm to carve out time and space for your wellbeing by attending yoga, meditation, or forest bathing classes.
After working up an appetite, head to the Silo Cookhouse for farm-to-table dinners in a spacious barn-style building with views of Mt. Pisgah. Here, the Turchins put their longtime love of fine dining and wine on full display. On Wednesday nights, it’s all about the pasta, whereas Thursday through Saturday evenings feature menus designed on the backbone of local offerings and seasonal produce. Once a month, the chefs put on a “Supper Club” event in collaboration with local farmers and purveyors. Horse Shoe’s chefs craft multi-course, family-style menus built around the selected local purveyor of the month, highlighting, for example, Mars Hill Mushrooms or Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery.
Horse Shoe Farm is best set up for people traveling in large or small groups, and often hosts corporate retreats, yoga retreats, and larger family celebrations and events.
The amenities are many: There’s easy access to hikes and French Broad fly fishing spots, and even a luxury car storage facility. Enjoy the comfortable lodgings, delicious dining, and a breathtaking setting—Horse Shoe Farm has something for every type of guest, making it a rejuvenating, relaxing western NC weekend destination.

PROTECTING THE CAROLINAS
Help conserve this rich landscape for future generations, plus our favorite organizations to consider supporting.
words LIZA CARRASQUILLO / photos JAMEY PRICE OR JP GRICE
As part of the ancient Appalachian region, the Blue Ridge Mountains have millions upon millions of years of history etched deep within their stones. They stood tall as the first humans trekked across North America, and they became an unyielding safe haven to those who settled the area. That safe haven was shared by the thousands of plant and animal species that thrived because of the unique topography and seasonal changes of the region. Even now, the Blue Ridge Mountains remain one of the most bio-diverse areas in the United States.
But while the Blue Ridge Mountains might seem invulnerable, a closer look at their ecosystem will tell a different story. After generations of pollution, deforestation and other human-driven threats, the area is slowly being compromised. Fortunately, there’s hope for the Blue Ridge Mountains. With enough people willing to help, we can protect the area’s biodiversity and conserve its breathtaking beauty for future generations to experience.
This list of activities to do and organizations to support can help everyone get started:
Visit the National Parks
There are two official national parks in the Blue Ridge Mountains—the Blue Ridge Parkway National Park and the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. While irresponsible tourists can cause more harm than good, having people visit these parks is the best way to get them to learn about the problems they face. Those who are truly interested in conserving the Blue Ridge Mountains can experience their scenic routes and beautiful trails firsthand. Plus, they can speak to park rangers and learn more about the interesting species that call the area home.
Spread Awareness About the Issue
People can’t support conservation efforts if they know nothing about them. Many local and national conservation organizations have started as grassroots movements, which are often built upon word of mouth. That’s why it’s important to take part in their local outreach groups and educational programs, whether as an attendee or a volunteer.
Volunteer for a Cleanup
For those who live close to the Blue Ridge Mountains—or even better, those who live in one of the many towns dotting the area—volunteering is a great way to make an impact. One way to help out is to join one of the many trash collection crews that set out around the area. Organizations like Conserving Carolina
102 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM A THE EXCLUSIVES
schedule trail maintenance and litter cleanup events each year, so don’t hesitate to contact them if you want to sign up.
Offer Up Your Skills to Local Organizations
It’s not always easy to help out a cause when the most popular forms of volunteering don’t seem accessible. Fortunately, organizations like Blue Ridge Conservancy, the National Park Foundation, and Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains offer a variety of ways to get involved. In addition to needing people for cleanup activities and educational programs, they also need people to donate professional services. Photographers, web designers, writers, and even administrative experts are all needed to keep these organizations running smoothly. Reach out to one today to find out how you can help with your professional skills.
Support Native Flora and Fauna
Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains comes with the unique opportunity to impact the surrounding ecosystem firsthand. Growing a garden with native wildflowers and other plants can help offset the loss of habitat in other areas. Don’t live nearby? Why not donate some plants, instead? Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains continue to run a tree donation program for their Sleeter Lake Park project. This project aims to revitalize the Sleeter Lake area by bringing in wildlife and building a town recreation area. For just $50 - $500, donors can purchase a sapling for the organization to plant in their honor. Tree types range from sassafras and sweet gums to sycamores and Virginia pines.
Shop Smarter
Becoming a smart consumer can be more helpful than most people realize when it comes to conservation efforts. Many local businesses like Mast General Store, Bistro Roca and Stick Boy Bread Company take pride in their Blue Ridge Mountain community, often showing it through their sponsorship of conser-
vation organizations. In addition to shopping locally, people can support conservation efforts by simply being more conscious of what they’re spending money on. Buying things that are sustainably made ethically sourced is a good way to start.
Donate to Local or National Organizations
Can’t donate any time for volunteer work? Why not donate money, instead? These conservation groups rely on monetary donations to fund everything from cleanup equipment and educational programs to scientific studies and land surveys. Plus, many organizations offer memberships for those who commit to recurring donations. These memberships grant all sorts of perks, such as invites to members-only events, newsletters about the group’s work, and even yearly gifts.
Get Political
Unfortunately, local conservation efforts can only get us so far. When it comes to large-scale solutions, the cooperation of the local, state and even federal government is important. This is in part because government agencies are the ones that have the power to put more legal protections in place. Electing officials who are environmentally conscious and are willing to support long-term conservation goals can go a long way in securing the Blue Ridge Mountains in the future.
Like, Comment, and Subscribe
Another small but impactful action is to harness the power of social media for everyday conservation efforts. Look up local businesses and nonprofit organizations that are focusing on the Blue Ridge Mountains and support their efforts online. Sharing videos, joining in on discussions, and liking posts can all help to boost engagement. Plus, following these entities on social media is also a great way to stay in the loop about new events and programs starting up.

MOUNTAIN MEMORIES
A trip to the up-and-coming Blue Ridge town of Hendersonville, NC we won't soon forget.
Hendersonville NC, nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, is a hidden gem that is often overshadowed by its famous neighbor Asheville. However, this charming town has a personality of its own and is bursting with unique experiences and activities that are worth exploring. From enjoying delicious food and beer at Sierra Nevada, to taking in the stunning views at Jump Off Rock, there is something for everyone in this picturesque town.
Our trip began with a stop at Sierra Nevada, where we indulged in the delectable beer cheese and pretzel before taking a tour of the brewery. After seeing the sheer expanse of this brewery and where the magic is made, we headed out to the beer
garden. Here, we sipped beer and enjoyed the live music outside. Instantly, we knew we were in for a treat. Our next adventure took us to the Riveter, where we enjoyed mountain climbing and bike riding. This outdoor experience summed up the unique mountain vibe that is Hendersonville. After our first afternoon of adventure, we headed to our home away from home for the weekend!
The Bed & Breakfast On Tiffany Hill is a stunning bed and breakfast located in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. As we checked in, we were warmly greeted by the owner and amazing host Selena Einwechter, who immediately made us feel at home. The attention to detail at this B&B is evident from the

moment you arrive. Each room is beautifully appointed, with comfortable beds and luxurious linens, as well as thoughtful amenities like fresh flowers and local chocolates. One of the more thoughtful ideas, each of the rooms here is named after Selena's favorite cities in the south, and each are beautifully decorated with elegant furnishings and soft, inviting colors.
The views from the porch are simply breathtaking, with rolling hills and mountain vistas stretching as far as the eye can see. The world-class hospitality at the Bed & Breakfast On Tiffany Hill is unparalleled, with no detail spared in ensuring that guests have a comfortable and memorable stay. The lovely garden on site is meticulously maintained, with colorful flowers and fragrant herbs adding to the already picturesque setting. We especially enjoyed the beautiful area called the Circle of Trees, where we could sit and enjoy peace and quiet in Adirondack chairs, surrounded by the beauty of nature. And the secret garden walk was a delightful surprise, with hidden nooks and crannies to discover around every corner.
After exploring the lovely property we headed out for dinner at Shine Restaurant. We loved the diverse menu here, especially the roasted cauliflower and the fried chicken sandwich. And
the lamb lollipops…they truly shine! Seriously though, they are absolutely delicious. Following dinner, head to the rooftop for a tasty cocktail and views of downtown. After a busy day it was back to the B&B for some stargazing and a good night's sleep.
The next morning, we indulged in the delicious breakfast at Tiffany Hill, which included mouth-watering French toast that left us craving for more. Owner, Selena wishes everyone a good morning and makes sure breakfast is served to perfection. It’s a wonderful way to start the day.
We then headed to the historic Flat Rock Playhouse. Flat Rock Playhouse is a renowned theatre in Hendersonville, NC, and visiting their facilities is a unique experience in itself. We were able to take a tour to see the behind the scenes and explore the various aspects of theatre production, from costumes and set design to lighting and sound. It was such a great way to see the historic site and how much goes into each performance.
Our tour guide then took us to the Carl Sandburg House, a beautiful historic home that once belonged to the famous American writer and poet, Carl Sandburg. Today, the house has been preserved as a museum and national historic site, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and works of this iconic figure. As you

approach the house, you'll be struck by its stunning beauty, with its charming architecture and sprawling grounds. Inside, you'll find a wealth of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to Sandburg's life and work, from his early days as a struggling poet to his later years as a celebrated author and public figure. And, of course, no visit to the Sandburg House would be complete without a stroll through the beautiful gardens and pastures that surround the property, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, countryside, and pond (for wildlife lovers and kids you can see the fish and even snakes sunning from the bridge on site). The highlight of the visit was seeing the goats on the property, which were so adorable and entertaining.
We then stopped at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, where we savored the succulent pork and brisket. A great patio, good barbecue, and tasty sides were a wonderful break from the busy morning. Now, to the wineries.
No trip to Hendersonville is complete without visiting the wineries, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits to three amazing ones.
Marked Tree Vineyard is a beautiful family-owned vineyard that offers stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They produce a variety of wines, including Cab Franc, Chardonel, Petit Verdot, and Gruner Veltliner. Visitors can enjoy their tastings on the patio overlooking the vineyard, surrounded by the picturesque mountains.
Stone Ashe Vineyards is another charming family-owned vineyard that offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The vineyard produces a selection of traditional Bordeaux wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and
Chardonnay. The cozy tasting room and outdoor seating area provide the perfect ambiance for sipping on some wine and taking in the views.
Burntshirt Vineyards is a lovely vineyard that offers a unique experience with its beautifully restored 1930s barn tasting room. They produce a variety of wines, including their popular Rock Bottom Red, and their refreshing Sunset Sippin. Visitors can enjoy their wine tastings on the outdoor patio or in the cozy barn, surrounded by the vineyards and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
After a late afternoon nap at the Bed & Breakfast it was time for dinner at Season's At Highland Lake.
Our dining experience at Season's at Highland Lake was nothing short of divine. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. The ambiance was sophisticated yet cozy, with warm lighting and elegant décor that set the stage for an unforgettable meal. And let's talk about the food — it was simply out of this world.
Starting with the caprese salad, we were blown away by the fresh, juicy tomatoes, velvety mozzarella, and fragrant basil. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with the tangy balsamic vinaigrette tying everything together perfectly. But that was just the beginning.
The shrimp dish was cooked to perfection, with succulent shrimp that practically melted in our mouths. The rich, buttery sauce was perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of garlic and herbs to give it a depth of flavor that left us wanting more.
And let's not forget about the salmon toast: it was both beautiful

and delicious. My favorite dish though, and to my surprise, was the mushroom appetizer which was an absolute delight. Each bite was bursting with umami flavor, with juicy, meaty mushrooms and a creamy, indulgent sauce that we could have eaten by the spoonful.
Overall, our dining experience at Season's at Highland Lake was a feast for the senses, with each dish expertly crafted and bursting with flavor. It's no wonder that this restaurant has earned such a stellar reputation—the meal really was memorable, and one that any foodie would be lucky to experience.
After dinner we headed to sunset at one of the best views in the entire state: Jump Off Rock. Jump Off Rock is a popular tourist destination and it's easy to see why. The rock itself is a large outcropping that juts out from the side of a mountain, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, visitors can see for miles in every direction, with rolling hills and lush forests stretching as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, it's even possible to see three different states — Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee — from the top of Jump Off Rock.
With another busy day in the books it was time to retreat back to the B&B. Overall, our stay at the Bed & Breakfast On Tiffany Hill was nothing short of magical. From the warm welcome to the beautiful surroundings, every detail was perfect, and we felt truly pampered and cared for during our time there. We highly recommend this charming B&B to anyone looking for a relaxing and luxurious getaway in the mountains of North Carolina.
Our final day, we ate another delicious breakfast and then said our goodbyes to our new friend Selena at Tiffany Hill. Then it was
time for one last stop to explore the downtown a little more and snap some photos!
Downtown Hendersonville is a charming and vibrant area, with a bustling main street lined with cool shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Strolling through the streets of downtown is like taking a step back in time, with historic brick buildings and quaint storefronts that harken back to the town's early days. Our favorite stops were Mast General, Woodlands Gallery, Willow Hill Soap Company, O.P. Taylors Toy Store, and the Appalachian Pinball Museum. There are so many unique boutiques and antique shops to peruse and pick up handmade crafts and jewelry from local artisans. There’s also a variety of restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat. Mike’s On Main, Postero, and the Blue Ridge Beer Garden were places we enjoyed.
Hendersonville is not just a town that you simply visit as an aside on your trip to Asheville or any other nearby destination—it is the destination all on its own, and one that is well worth savoring. From the moment you arrive in Hendersonville, you'll be struck by its friendly locals, vibrant culture, and picturesque scenery. Whether you're visiting the quaint shops and cafes that line Main Street, taking in a show at the historic Flat Rock Playhouse, exploring the many trails, peaks, and waterfalls nearby, or simply relaxing on the porch of your cozy bed and breakfast, you'll find that Hendersonville offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

APPALACHIA, TAKE THE WHEEL
The ultimate NC mountain road trip.
Pack up the car with your best adventure gear, strap in your most lovable travel companions, stash some snacks and road candy in the glove box, and hit the road for the ultimate North Carolina mountain road trip.
Take Highway 74 due west for just under two hours to land at your first stop: Lake Lure.
This beautiful hideaway is nestled in the Hickory Nut Gorge. Crystal blue water pools at the base of rounded mountains and rugged granite cliffs. Hike up Chimney Rock or tackle the Bearwallow Trail for an aerial view of the lake. Alternatively, take a dip in the lake at the town beach or explore lake level in a rented
canoe or kayak. Dine at La Strada before tucking yourself in at The Lodge on Lake Lure.
The next morning, drive 30 minutes southwest along Highway 64 to Hendersonville. Stop here for breakfast on Main Street, either at Arabella or 1950s-style Mikes on Main Street, then pick up a sandwich or wrap to go from Three Chopt Sandwich Shop. Take a moment to appreciate the first of many excellent western NC small town main streets before hopping back aboard and jetting north to Looking Glass Falls.
If you’re feeling industrious, navigate to the Looking Glass Rock Trail, which chugs up 1,700 feet in a little over three

miles, offering multiple vantage points to view the neighboring foothills, as well as trailside rhododendron. If your legs are tired from hiking Chimney Rock the day before, opt instead to continue straight past the turnoff for Looking Glass Rock Trail directly to the Looking Glass Falls parking area. Descend the stairs to a breathtaking swimming hole that pools beneath a 60foot cascade of thundering water. Take a dip and then sunbathe on the rocks while enjoying your picnic lunch from Three Chopt.
From here, head back south to the charming small college town of Brevard, located only 15 minutes away from Looking Glass. Spend the afternoon exploring Brevard’s galleries, shops, and craft breweries, then commit to an evening of good food and live music. If you have the wiggle room in your itinerary, tack on an extra day in the Brevard area to explore the many waterfalls and hikes of DuPont State Forest or link up with Davidson River Outfitters for an exceptional fly fishing expedition.
It’s nearly the midpoint of this North Carolina mountain road trip, and, as all well-seasoned travelers know, it’s important to build rest and recovery time into any grand ad-
venture to avoid burning out. To this end, head to Highlands, a cozy, small town that has a population of about 3,000 year-round residents and perches atop a plateau. If you’re still feeling spunky, there’s plenty to do, like exploring Whitewater Falls. It’s the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies. Or, head out to fish the Nantahala and Cullasaja. But if you can feel the need for a day’s rest, book yourself some time at The Spa at Old Edwards Inn. Expect European elegance articulated through wood and stone, a robust menu of services, and precisely the rejuvenation needed to launch into the next trip leg with a bit of spunk and curiosity.
From Highlands, head north to Sylva. Walkable and quaint, Sylva is saturated with breweries. You’ll find over 100 beers on tap just on Main Street and less than 3,000 residents around to drink them. Indulge with care, because this town is the perfect springboard for a whitewater adventure that you won’t want to miss. Neighboring Dillsboro not only offers the charm of a bygone railroad town and small business shopping haven, but also convenient small boat access to the

Tuckasegee River and a number of nearby outfitters offering whitewater rafting excursions to the Nantahala.
Dry off and head north to Cherokee, where 11,000 years of tribal history are on display just a few miles from the presentday, vibrant home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. This culturally rich destination affords visitors a glimpse into a different time and an appreciation of the arc of this land’s history. By virtue of its location at the edge of Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee is also a great location from which to explore this wilderness. The Smokies are America’s most visited national park and with good reason. Fog-shrouded ridges stretch for miles and miles, teeming with incredibly diverse ecosystems of flora and fauna. If you can spare the time, spend a few days exploring this wilderness by foot or by car.
Sufficiently tuckered out by a few days spent deep in the forest,
return to civilization by way of Asheville, western North Carolina’s largest city. With a buzzing live music scene and brewery presence rivaled only by Charlotte, Asheville is a hip hub for the weird and funky. Pop into its galleries and unique shops; sample its award-winning restaurants like Cúrate, Chai Pani, and Rhubarb; catch a concert at the Orange Peel; and raise a craft brew to your ultimate North Carolina mountain road trip.
When the time comes to say goodbye to Asheville, soften the sting of your departure by hopping on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This one-of-a-kind roadway may not be the most direct path to your destination, but it will offer the greatest journey, winding through Pisgah National Forest and delivering unparalleled views of the Blue Ridge. Experience stunning vistas at Craggy Pinnacle thirty minutes north of Asheville, then see the highest peak east of the Mississippi, Mt. Mitchell. Another great stop

for a short hike on your way north is the picturesque cascade of Crabtree Falls. Then, be sure to see the iconic views of Table Rock and Hawksbill from Chestoa View Overlook. Near here, you can pull off the parkway and detour to Linville Gorge, a dramatic outcropping of crags with zigzagging trails that climb with an intensity made worthwhile by the staggering views at their height. Then, back to the Parkway to complete a short hike to Linville Falls.
Depending on how much gas you have left in the tank (both yours and your car’s), proceed north to Beacon Heights and Grandfather Mountain and then off the Parkway towards Banner Elk. Roan Mountain will be your one last adventure on this Carolina mountain road trip. Here you can explore the balds of the Blue Ridge and see why they support so much wildlife. Hike along the mountain’s spine, bordered by
lush rhododendron gardens, and even camp in the highlands which is arguably the most scenic area along the Carolina stretch of the AT). Or, return to Banner Elk for one last dose of small town mountain charm. Visit the Banner House Museum for a glimpse of 19th century mountain life, or sample high country wines at Banner Elk Winery and Grandfather Vineyard and Winery before winding down at The Lodge at River Run.
Return home, intrepid traveler, feeling perhaps weary but also wide-eyed with wonder at all that western North Carolina has to offer.
