“When I was a child, I experienced a mouth injury that le my front tooth discolored. Since that accident, I have been hiding or editing my smile, afraid to show the discoloration. This year, I decided it was time to make a change and to make my smile a priority. A er my rst visit with Dr. Tesmer at Ballantyne Dentistry, I knew I had made the right decision. I immediately felt at home and knew that the entire team there cared about me. Their priority was to help me feel and look my best. We decided that four veneers were exactly what I needed to enhance my smile. I can’t explain how much this change has impacted my con dence! I am forever grateful that I took this step for myself. I genuinely can’t stop smiling!”

CULTURE
ARTS • STYLE • WELLNESS

Art and interior design have always been linked. From the gallery sculpture on display in the living room to the kid’s latest masterpiece taped to the fridge, there’s always some form of art to be found in a home. For some, that link is stronger than others, causing them to design whole rooms or living spaces with a particular piece of art in mind.

Chandra Johnson and Barrie Benson, both longtime friends and colleagues, wanted to make it easier for art and design lovers to blend their two worlds together. That’s why they founded Peg Norriss—a venture that works with artists to create capsule collections based on their work. The products they create—wallpaper being their largest seller—is all distributed through Schumacher. To find out more about their process and the driving force behind their collaboration, we asked them both a few questions.

What would you say is your mission at Peg Norriss?

Our mission is to support artists both creatively and financially. Our collections are a way to take their existing work and reimagine it, creating an additional revenue stream for them.

Why is both the creative and financial support of these artists so important to you?

When we started Peg Norriss, we knew we wanted there to be a charitable aspect to it. We both understood that these artists have spent their whole lives creating their path with art, applying for grants to help support their craft, so we saw this as a way to support them and allow their existing artwork to create profits while they are able to move onto future projects.

What’s the story behind the name Peg Norriss?

Our business was named after our two grandmothers, who were both forces of nature and very strong female influences in our life. Their respective styles, grit and grace have inspired us throughout life.

What do each of you bring to the business?

Johnson: As a designer, Barrie can envision how a piece of art might translate as a wallpaper in the interior design world. She has a pulse on the design landscape and what might be missing in the market.

38 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
A
CULTURE

Benson: As a gallerist, Chandra has strong relationships with the artists we partner with. She works as a champion for them, and she also has a great eye for design. Together, we work to identify artists, select artwork and work with the team at Schumacher to create our wallpaper and fabric collections.

What’s the process like to produce a capsule collection?

Benson: We first identify the artist and gauge their interest. Often, that step is all about timing. We try to make it a minimal time commitment for the artist and allow their depth of involvement to be voluntary.

Johnson: The next step is to identify past artwork or explore possible new artwork that Barrie and her team can see working in the interiors market. We then create and present concepts to Schumacher. We can’t share specifics right now, but we’re working on a few new collections that we’re very excited about. Stay tuned!

AN ARTISTIC REBIRTH

Sandy Palasti is a contemporary abstract artist living in Charlotte. But, her path to get where she is today was nothing short of unexpected.

As a young woman, Sandy followed her passion in science and landed in medical school. After a fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she was recruited as the first Pediatric ENT surgeon in Charlotte where she cared for thousands of children and their parents. She was awarded Top Doctor in Charlotte multiple times.

It sounds surprising that now her full-time pursuit is in the arts, but if you knew Sandy's pursuits outside of her high-powered work, it wouldn't have been.

“I have always been creative,” she explains. “While I worked, that creativity was pushed to the side. But as soon as I retired, I began a series of explorations that ranged from writing, to ceramics, guitar, and finally, I discovered painting almost by accident in February 2020. At the time, I was deep into creating pottery in my garage and was looking for a way to paint pots.”

Here, Sandy shares more about her path to where she is today.

Do you see your proficiency in medicine and sciences as related to your skill with a paintbrush?

My curiosity and desire to learn everything there is to know about a subject has definitely propelled me quickly through the art world. I paint 4-6 hours every day, even on Christmas. I study art all afternoon and evening. And I suppose I will do this until I learn it all! But, my skills in surgery run completely op-

posite to how I paint. My hands performed precise little motions where every move was vital and my surroundings in the operating room were sterile and painstakingly organized. My studio is a mess! There is paint on every surface, drips coming down the wall, splatter on the ceiling and on my dog. My movements are bold and taking chances is often rewarded with a wonderful outcome, unlike in the OR!

What does your artistic process look like?

I enter my studio each morning with an idea or two. Then I will decide what medium will best capture this idea as I work in both acrylics and oils. Music is a big part of my process: The songs evoke memories and emotions that fuel the dialogue I have with the canvas. I will start with graphite, drawing very loose sketches. I then follow with colorful and translucent washes of paint or ink. Layer by layer, the painting evolves until it feels like me, and like the mood or statement I am trying to convey.

Is there a specific source that inspires your art the most?

After I retired from medicine, I tried to write my memoir. I spent five years taking workshops and sitting in coffee houses. I stepped away from it at the second draft phase but still had a story to tell. We all have stories to tell but you have to discover the way you’d like yours told. I discovered I liked to draw on the emotions of my earlier life in medical school and residency: how I functioned as a woman in the man's world of the operating room, how I could have done it differently along the way,

how hard it was to give all that up, and how I recreated myself at the age of 55. Most of my inspiration comes from life stories, told through the lens of nature.

How would you describe your art style?

My style uses bold and sometimes unexpected color that triggers memories of a time, place, or event in one's life. I know I am doing my best work when I am teetering on the edge, taking risks, keeping my energy engaged, and avoiding perfectionism.

What do you find most challenging about life as an artist and what is the most rewarding?

The reward is having an activity that I lose myself in every day. Entering my studio is the best part of my day. The challenge is dealing with the uncertainty that my efforts will result in a satisfying, finished product, or in a painting that feels like me.

Do you take commissions? Where can people find your work?

My work can be found on my website. I have been fortunate that collectors from California to Cape Cod to Canada have brought my work into their homes. I encourage people to join my newsletter as I write monthly about upcoming events, things that inspire me, and new collections.

A NEW GATHERING SPACE

With the opening of The Coterie, one of Charlotte’s fastest growing areas welcomes a yoga studio.

Caitlyn Sheff’s brand new yoga studio on the West Side is the result of many hands. As the name would suggest, with 19 teachers, including her, and 12 front desk associates, according to Caitlyn, the team is what’s central to the studio’s existence. Behind the scenes, Bob Fullwood and Wyatt Starnes of Enbloc Construction and architects Sarah Feiner and Jessica Hoke of ODA Architecture made the beautiful space a reality.

Here, Caitlyn shares her journey to business ownership, what she hopes to bring to Charlotte with The Coterie, and what to expect when you visit.

When did you decide to start The Coterie?

Going through teacher training back in 2017, my friends and I joked about opening a yoga studio together someday, but by no means did we think it would actually happen. It took until late 2021 when a studio I was working for closed permanently that

I began really taking the steps toward making The Coterie a reality. I simply felt like I didn’t have a “yoga home” any longer, and the only way to find one was to build it. I started putting pen to paper, researching SBA loans and touring spaces about a month after the studio closed, and here we are now, a little over a year later.

What got you into yoga and/or movement practices?

I found myself at a yoga studio for the first time at 25. I was in a fairly ungrounded place, struggling with disordered eating and exercising and freshly out of a long term relationship. My therapist at the time was actually a registered yoga instructor, and he really encouraged me to try, knowing it would resonate with me. To say it resonated with me really underestimates the experience. Once I found something that pulled my mindset into a healthier place, I committed fully, and I made a promise to eventually teach this practice and share everything it had done for me.

What sets the Coterie apart from other yoga studios in the Charlotte area?

This is such a great question because I don’t think it’s anything tangible. Very obviously, we aren’t reinventing the wheel, as the practice itself has been around thousands and thousands of years. I think it’s the people: Our staff is truly unbelievable. We and other studio owners I’ve connected with have a “more is more” mentality. More yoga studios means more people doing yoga. More people doing yoga is always a good thing.

Why did you decide to offer the types of yoga on your schedule?

We offer three formats at The Coterie: Prana, Power and Peace. Each was added for their own set of reasons. Prana is our vinyasa yoga format. Power is a format that I simply love. It is a fusion of yoga and HIIT elements like jumping jacks, squats and pushups, and it is all choreographed to the beat of music. Our final format is Peace, which is our Yin format. Yin is a restorative yoga practice that is truly such a beautiful challenge for the mind.

How do you decide on instructors and how did you build your team?

Each and every one of our teachers are truly amazing. They have a natural way of holding space for others while pushing them toward growth in an extremely supportive way. Each front desk associate is equally incredible.

Is there anything a new visitor or member should know?

Show up as you are, please. Know that there are no prerequisites to being here or to taking a yoga class. We are literally here for you.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAMEY PRICE Chef Sam Hart brings his latest concept, Biblio, to west Charlotte.

EExecutive Chef Sam Hart of Counter-, has brought Charlotte another markedly inventive concept: Biblio.

Now open in West Charlotte, Biblio is a moody, gothic-style wine and tapas bar that describes itself as “the first reverse wine-pairing restaurant in the world.” Guests select a bottle first, and Executive Chef John Cruze then creates plates to complement the varietal selected. The only menu you’ll receive is the wine list, and the price of each bottle has been “inflated” to also include the cost of your meal.

There are 500 wines at Biblo, and all are small-production labels. Bill Cox is the wine director and Elyse Simchik serves as sommelier.

Hart, who was born and raised in the Queen City and has an extensive background in fine dining, opened the sister concept to Biblio in 2020. Counter-, also on the west side, is an intimate, full sensory restaurant experience featuring themed tasting menus paired to music.

“Originally [Biblo] was going to be one of the last concepts we planned to open, but the space lent itself perfectly to it,” Sam says. “Biblio is the opposite of Counter- in almost every single way. From the vibe, to the music, to the way you order. The biggest difference is that you order wine first, and from that order Chef John in the back figures out a few dishes that perfectly go with your wine.”

Along with the signature pairing service, there is also a limited a la carte menu. The offerings at Biblio change with every week, based on the produce the team is able to source from local farms and Freshlist. The proteins are locally sourced, as well. This seasonal dependence, Sam says, allows the chefs to think on their feet, and have a new challenge every day.

Opening two restaurants in three years, and one at the height of a global pandemic, is no small feat. For Hart, however, there’s no other path.

“This is the only industry where you can physically consume a story and art,” he explains. “We are fortunate to have access to all senses with our work. There is a great deal of sacrifice involved with deciding this life path, but it’s worth it every second of the day.” info

A SPIRITED RETURN

Southern Distilling Company is the first legal distillery in Iredell County, and one of the largest privately owned distilleries outside of Kentucky.

The 20 acre Statesville campus houses a tasting room, production facility, barrel aging warehouse, bottling area, and conference room. There’s also two rickhouses on the campus, one currently filled with 24,000 barrels and another just starting to fill up. An event center is slated to open in 2023.

Under the leadership of Vienna Barger, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer and Pete Barger, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, SDC produces spirits for over 100 clients globally and boasts an award-winning range of bourbon and ryes. Their Southern Star Double Shot Bourbon Cream Liqueur is the most awarded bourbon cream in the nation.

So, what’s the story behind this local heavyweight? Vienna and Pete share more about the birth of their business, and the Carolina history that informed it.

When did Southern Distilling begin, and what was the impetus?

Vienna: In 2013, Pete and I set out to build a company that embraces the spirit of America’s innovative craft distilling industry. Southern Distilling Company was born on a 20 acre historic farm in Iredell County, and the response has been resounding ever since. We grew up around multi-generational family business ownership, and realized a desire to establish a business of our own. We spent a decade exploring options before launching a startup bourbon and rye distillery with a comprehensive and unique business model that checked all the boxes and was scalable.

How did you all choose your location?

Pete: Everything about Southern Distilling Company is intentional, including the physical location of the distillery: While I am native of Statesville, NC, the city was also once known as

the liquor capital of the world and continues to be an agriculturally rich region located at a key transportation crossroads today. Statesville supported a robust spirits industry with hundreds of federally licensed farm distilleries bringing their products into the city to be blended and bottled for distribution on the railroad. Due to the sheer volume of spirits being produced, the area became a key target for the Temperance movement, which set its sights on putting the spirits industry out of business. Statesville was voted dry in 1903, long before the rest of the nation entered Prohibition in 1920. The thriving farm distilleries and rectification houses either went out of business, moved west to Kentucky and Tennessee, or went underground, giving birth to the illicit moonshine trade that western North Carolina is known for today. Southern Distilling Company is proud to be bringing back this heritage and sharing the largely unknown history of legal spirits production in North Carolina.

Tell us about the "grain to glass" process.

Vienna: We purchase our grains from the local farmers, bring them to the distillery, store them in our silos and mill what we need fresh for each batch of bourbon or rye whiskey being made. A majority of the grain has been sourced from 20 miles around the distillery. Once the grains have fermented and they have gone through the distillation process the grains have been removed of all the sugars and carbohydrates, leaving a fiber and protein rich feed for our local farmers.

64 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Do you have a current favorite whiskey you distill?

Vienna: Our Southern Star Paragon collection is truly something that is unique. Each expression shows the remarkable way that proof points alter the overall flavor profile. Our Southern Star Paragon Wheated Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 92 proof easy sipping bourbon with vanilla, honey, subtle hints of walnut, and a rich texture. The Southern Star Paragon Bottled-In-Bond Wheated Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a rich, silky, caramel texture with a complex array of floral notes.

The most unique product in our collection is Southern Star Paragon Cask Strength Single Barrel. This spicy, high proof bourbon was made for slow sipping. It’s herbaceous, woody, and peppery notes are balanced by sweet mint, cardamom and vanilla bean.

South End’s VANA offers a rotating selection of large and small format steaks and meats, so it’s rare that your entree offerings will be the same. The meats are in keeping with the rustic cuisine and cooked in the open wood-fire kitchen. If you see the quail on the menu, don’t miss it. THE PERFECT HARDWOODS

MYNEWFLOOR.COM

OPENS UP A WORLD OF CUSTOMIZED POSSIBILITIES

The beauty, richness and natural qualities of wood make it one of the most popular choices for homeowners searching for new flooring. But “wood” is a broad category with many nuances. How do you narrow it down and find the perfect flooring for your home and lifestyle?

MYNEWFLOOR.COM IS HERE TO HELP.

“We’re a full-service resource for a wide variety of flooring, including hardwood, carpet, LVP, laminated wood and tile,” says MyNewFloor.com owner Carlo Garcia. “Now we’re excited to offer the Canto Collection, a premium wood line by Mercier. The ability to customize the different qualities of our products gives our customers the choices they’ve been seeking, at surprisingly competitive prices.”

Garcia says that Mercier is known for continuous innovation in product development, with technical performance levels higher than any other manufacturer in the industry. “These are floors designed with maximum durability and resistance to impact, scratches, water, abrasion, and other wear and tear, all while preserving the original beauty of the wood,” he explains.

How does customizing work?

Garcia says these are the most important factors to consider when choosing your wood floor:

Species

Wood species are differentiated by their grain, or the visible contrast of the growth rings. MyNewFloor.com’s Canto Collection includes Maple, Red Oak and White Oak, all of which have a pronounced wood grain that gives character and dimension to their appearance.

Sheen

Sheen refers to the different types of glosses based on the level of desired light reflection:

• Matte: Low light reflection, no sheen – helps to hide signs of wear.

• Matte-brushed: Adds a textured effect.

• Satin: Moderate light reflection, lightly transparent and silky.

• Satin-brushed: Adds a textured effect.

Grading

Grading refers to the width of each product in the Canto Collection. When making selections, the floor area and size of each room should be considered. Wider wood planks will make a smaller room look more spacious, while narrow ones are recommended to create an effect of depth. MyNewFloor.com’s array of widths even includes herringbone styles!

72 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Core

The Canto Collection features two wood cores:

• Solid wood: Made of 100% hardwood, with a thickness of 3/4 -inch. Solid wood flooring can be nailed or stapled to a subfloor.

• Engineered wood: Constructed of a hardwood surface layer, laid on top of a hardwood plywood. These floors allow for a glued, stapled or nailed installation, and even floating for most species.

SEEING – AND TOUCHING – IS BELIEVING

“Obviously there’s a lot to think about when choosing the perfect flooring,” Garcia says. “It can be difficult to visualize all the customized combinations by reading about them, or looking at photos online. That’s why we have a wide selection of Canto samples at our three Charlotte-area showrooms. We work with you to determine the best combinations – and the design possibilities are part of the fun!”

IN THE BUSINESS OF BUILDING

Jones and Hedges Custom Builders specializes in residential custom new home builds, renovations, additions, outdoor living spaces, kitchens, and baths. Leveraging over 20 years of combined experience building in the Charlotte area, Josh Jones and Kyle Hedges aim to “stay on schedule, stay within budget, and build lasting relationships with customers,” says Josh.

The two founders discovered they had mutual missions professionally: “We enjoy building relationships with great clients, seeing a project from start to finish, and using our talents to accomplish that,” says Jones.

Before founding his custom home building company in 2008, Jones was working at a national homebuilder, learning everything from how to schedule and manage builds, to how to interact with clients, to how to efficiently communicate with his team. Meanwhile, Kyle Hedges attended design

school at Ohio State and was using his degree to help clients visualize their future homes through 3D plans. Kyle Hedges leans on his love of design in collaborating with clients to bring their vision to life. "The process of being able to show someone how we can take their 2D idea and bring it into 3D is one of the greatest parts of my job," he shares.

With this motivating every business endeavor, the partners set to work constructing high-end homes, making an effort to match each client’s style and ideas to the client’s budget and the architect’s portfolio. The resulting homes vary widely in terms of style and size, yet Jones insists he could never choose a favorite past project: “It’s hard to have a favorite—that’s like asking which kid is your favorite. Each project is different in its own way and, as a result, we have many favorites. It may have to do with style, colors, layouts, and at times, it's more about the friendship you’ve created.”

Client relationships are at the center of everything that Jones and Hedges does. They see every opportunity to build a home equally as an opportunity to build a relationship, and they define success as “the experience that a client feels they had, which always has the basic ingredients of build time, budget, and communication,” says Jones. Of course, the builders have other secondary goals. For instance, they strive to balance design, function, and style for the client. At the same time, they seek harmony between the style of the home and the style of the surrounding community, sometimes working alongside residential plan design firms to achieve this. Throughout the build process, they work collaboratively, allowing clients and architects to lead the way but chiming in helpfully with tips and insight gleaned from years of experience.

A STUDY WITH AN EDGE

Amy Lee's approachable, yet elevated aesthetic has been developed during her 20 years of experience in custom home design and remodeling. Her full service interior design firm, Artistic Interiors, serves Lake Norman, Charlotte, and beyond.

This study, part of a project completed at The Point in Mooresville, started off with Amy Lee’s client asking for a place to relax and watch TV, read a book, or entertain if another couple was over.

“My client told me to think fire and alcohol when designing this space,” Amy shares. “She is very classy and edgy, and I wanted to invoke her personality into the room design.

This meant I needed to produce a unique design that was bold, yet cozy.”

With the room’s very high, vaulted ceilings, Amy knew she’d need to be intentional to make the space feel cozy.

“I went with a black paint color for the custom bookcases and walls,” she said. “This provided the perfect backdrop for the warmer, lighter colors in the room and made the room feel less expansive.”

The art was commissioned from local Charlotte artist Kent Youngstrom. The leather loveseat is Verellen, the swivel chairs are from Highland House and the ottoman is Bernhardt. —

Mike Fitton, David Robaina, and Eric Robaina of Home Technology Solutions in Charlotte specialize in all kinds of home automation and tech, from centralized video distribution, to security, whole home audio, and—increasingly— smart lighting.

Pictured here is the Control4 Vibrant Lighting on full display. As Mike tells us, there are two main aspects of advanced lighting in a home. One is the ability to control lighting and add lights to smart scenes. The second is using light-

ing to call attention to aspects of a home that owners want to highlight. Doing so can have a “drastic effect on the colors, hues and shades” of the surrounding space.

Plus, smart lighting can automatically adjust in color and temperature to match the natural circadian rhythm of the day. The Control4 Vibrant, framing this owner’s pool, provides intense color saturation, transition effects, and fadeto-white lighting effects. The tape light has a virtually unlimited RGB palette of color combinations.

GATHER IN GLAMOUR

As an interior designer, the ultimate gratification stems from achieving the sublime harmony between a client's desires and the project's final form. For Layton Campbell of JLayton Interiors, the reward feels all the much sweeter when he has already worked with a client to bring their visions to life before. That’s why Campbell was excited to get his hands on this new Simonini build — the Myers Park house belongs to a client who leaned on Campbell to design for a prior home as well.

“I worked with Jonathan Howard in 2002 on his previous home when I was an associate designer after just moving from New York City,” recalls Campbell. “He later sold the property and moved north.”

Two decades later, Howard reached back out to Campbell to reconnect on this new Charlotte project. It was like two old friends meeting, and the rest is design history.

At the beginning of the project, there was an extensive interview process. After all, the best way to truly understand a client’s goals is to ask specific questions about their lifestyle, preferred colors, and style direction. Campbell also likes to see inspiration pictures for a more visual conceptualization. It is also important, he notes, to inquire about the client’s hobbies and passions. All of this information is needed to craft the type of unique and personalized design plan that JLayton Interiors is known for.

Campbell worked with the clients' passion for entertaining and their love for their art collection. These empty nesters sought Campbell out to transform their space into a glamorous and modern oasis without sacrificing comfort and warmth. The designer answered that call by creating a haven that strikes the perfect balance between opulence and hospitality.

Campbell deliberately and discerningly opted for a cohesive blend of understated hues that imbue the home with a sense of ease and elegance.

“I chose a light palette with accents of blues and amethyst

but there are punches of color sprinkled throughout as well for impact. The buttery Holland & Sherry wool drapes in the office are one of those moments where we wanted a happy touch of color that lifts the mood while [one of the clients] works from home.”

By selecting this color combination, the ambiance of each room radiates brightness and a warm, inviting atmosphere, devoid of any sterility. The addition of dark wood accents and flooring serves as an anchor, giving the appearance of a livedin abode, rather than a showroom for visitors.

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 95

This is brought to life especially well in the kitchen, where the custom Calacatta countertops and mitered waterfall island take center stage. The same material, sourced from Walker Zanger, is used in a laser-cut pattern for the backsplash. A minimal stainless hood was chosen to showcase the splash from countertop to ceiling. In contrast, a darker stained island anchors the light, natural space. Functionally, the ample cooking area and island seating make this room an ideal gathering place for the clients and their guests; it's now a place to make both meals and memories. Custom stools in polished nickel and vegan leather by Powell & Bonnell soften the room.

HOME & DESIGN

These clients also wanted glamour, and Campbell made sure to deliver. The custom-made lighting fixtures from Vitosi add an air of artistry to the space — especially evident in the hand-blown glass chandelier above the main stairway. This piece, one of the main characters in the home, was quite the endeavor, requiring two craftsmen per link to create the 11’ high fixture.

Ascending the staircase leads guests to the private sanctuaries of the home. The main suite in particular exudes sophistication with a chic and inviting bedding collection from Bedside Manor. The bedding compliments the more modern aesthetic of the chrome and upholstered bed.

The primary bathroom’s design is a nod to high design. Campbell used ultra-modern black and white tile from Walker Zanger and sleek polished nickel fixtures from Majestic Bath to deliver an unforgettable and dramatic space.

Down the hall, the detailed, thoughtful children's suite features a timeless ballet pink and gray palette.

This home's design is taken to new heights with the inclusion of exquisite luxury fabrics from esteemed brands Great Plains, Schumacher, and Romo.

Custom furniture adds both authenticity and richness. Memorable pieces like the nightstands, the dining room sideboard, and the foyer console were made by local Charlotte craftsmen at Kauffman and Co. The Phillip Jeffries wallpaper adds a surreal texture to the space; the walls appear as if coated with fabric and plaster.

Campbell personally designed the custom marble integrated vanity in the powder room. It is a testimony to the

attention to detail given to even the smallest spaces in this stunning home.

Ultimately, the rapport between designer and client, combined with thorough planning and near-perfect execution — from the stunning tile in the primary bathroom to the handcrafted chandelier — led to a modern home that is both art-forward and welcoming.

There’s no doubt Campbell exceeded expectations in this Myers Park project. The finished home is a masterclass in truly custom design, blending modernity with glamour. These results are a rarity in the current market saturated with trends.

CLASSIC MEETS ECLECTIC

A lively, colorful hotel in downtown from the Kessler Collection.

When it comes to soaking in beautiful Charleston, there’s no hotel stay quite like the one Grand Bohemian Charleston offers. Ideally located on Wentworth Street, GBC offers easy access to all the best of downtown, while still feeling nicely tucked away into a quiet area. Once inside, you’re immediately met with Kessler Collection’s design-forward style. While many hotels in Charleston lean heavily on integrating the city’s own historic look into their aesthetic, Grand Bohemian takes a step away from the classic and into the more playful, vibrant looks that collection owner Richard Kessler tends to favor. Expect oversized art pieces, dramatic chandeliers, brass lanterns, golden tufted sofas, and neon purple lights that adorn the elevator.

TThe hotel is marked by its dedication to both art and wine, which fuses perfectly with the laidback Southern elegance found throughout each of the hotel’s fifty luxurious rooms. Inside each room, you’ll find that everything—each lamp light, dresser, and pillowtop comforter—provides a pop of Bohemian style against the backdrop of traditionally Southern staples, such as the high-backed chairs and stately headboards.

The hotel’s appreciation for art is not only visible in the details of the interior throughout, it is displayed also in the Grand Bohemian Gallery and the Atrium. The Gallery, open to all guests, features unique pieces of art, jewelry, sculpture, and glass created by nationally and locally renowned artists— all for purchase. The Atrium is full of original pieces and vibrant green grass, and Atrium facing rooms are available.

After ambling through the gallery and admiring each piece of artwork, guests are encouraged to stop by the Grand Bohemian Hotel’s wine bar and wine blending room on the lobby level. Each class offered at the Grand Bohemian Hotel teaches guests the art and chemistry of blending grapes of different ages and regions to create a taste as unique and innovative as each guest’s personality. Guests can leave with their own uniquely blended bottle.

If you’re one who only likes wine when they dine, The Grand Bohemian Hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Èlevè, is sure to captivate your senses. It’s one of few rooftops in the city, so you’ll want to grab a spot outside whenever weather allows. The menu has a French flare, and there is ample seating indoors as well.

HISTORY PRESERVED

Experience the small town charm and character of South Carolina’s Old 96 District.

TThe Carolinas, like most of the South, are home to some incredibly charming small towns, reminiscent of a time long gone by. One such area is known as the Old 96 District. Nestled in the upper Western section of South Carolina, the Old 96 District comprises the counties of Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens and McCormick. Within these counties you’ll find Southern history alongside local businesses, miles and miles of hiking, biking and walking trails and pristine freshwater lakes. Escape the hustle and bustle of busy life and explore these quaint Southern towns at your leisure.

Below, you’ll find our top recommendations from our memorable trip to the Old 96 District.

Edgefield, SC

Edgefield was once home to thousands of settlers. As part of the Great Wagon Road, it was a stop for travelers headed West. Today, Edgefield is beloved for its quaint downtown square, countless historic sites, and its growing artisan community.

First, take a stroll around the square! Then grab some delicious grilled cheeses and, of course, some sweet desserts at TLC Confections. After that, head around the corner for a tast-

ing at Carolina Moon Distillery. For the cocktail connoisseur, this place has an incredibly large local selection of pretty much every spirit you can think of, from moonshine to bourbon, gin, vodka and rum. Finish the day with an upscale meal at the Old Edgefield Grille or Christine’s Farm to Fork.

A note for the sporting lovers visiting Edgefield: The Palmetto Shooting Complex is an excellent destination just down the road. This world-class facility on 300 acres is home to five trap and skeet overlays and two sporting clays courses. They also have archery and a massive pavilion!

Johnston, SC

This quaint town is fondly known as the “Peach Capital of the World.” This area produces around 60 percent of South Carolina's peaches. If you enjoy traveling on country roads, a drive to Titan Farms or Big Smile is very picturesque. There are even opportunities to get off the pavement and onto some clay to explore even more of rural South Carolina. See the rows and rows of peach trees in this county for yourself. Titan Farms is the largest peach grower on the East Coast, with over 6,200 acres of peaches. One interesting fact we learned while there: You do not want ripe peaches to touch each other.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JP GRICE

Laurens, SC

From Edgefield, Laurens County sits about an hour and a half drive away. Laurens County was established in 1785 and is a proud part of the Old 96 District. In Laurens you’ll find a tight knit community with a lively downtown and beautiful outdoor gathering area.

The historic town square is home to standout eateries and local shops. We got to explore the knick knacks and antiques at Designs by D. The staff was so friendly, and the pickin’ was fun! For coffee enthusiasts, we can confirm that there’s tasty caffeinated beverages to be found in this town. A Cubano at Courthouse Coffee right on the square will get your morning started on the right foot. If you like sweets, we highly recommend ordering their famous cinnamon roll. And if you are in Laurens later in the day for lunch or dinner, be sure to carve out time for elevated Southern fare at Chef Caleb Satterfield’s Rootimentary. This beautifully designed restaurant has a sophisticated flair. The open kitchen allows guests a glimpse to where their food will be prepared. The bar has a speakeasy vibe and offers up some harder to find bourbons, such as Blantons and Buffalo Trace. And the food, well, it surprised us in the best way: so much flavor, and a great presentation too! If you go for dinner, order the shrimp and grits or the popular Coq Au Vin (chicken breast poached in red wine with bacon lardon). For lunch, the hamburger is spot on!

City Hall and outdoor dining area in downtown Laurens. Old Coca-Cola mural in Laurens. Chef Caleb Satterfield of Rootimentary in Laurens. Cinnamon roll from Courthouse Coffee in Laurens. The Willington Bookshop in Mt. Carmel. The Battle of Musgrove Mill State Park in Clinton.

Clinton, SC

Discover Clinton, SC — a hidden gem for those seeking a break from the city grind. Enjoy a stroll around town and then treat yourself to some delectable dining options. Steamers Restaurant is famous for their burgers, or grab a slice at House of Pizza. And if you're craving something different, don't miss out on the legendary hot dogs at Wilson's Curb Market.

For a delightful shopping experience, make your way to Tapestry Inc or Sunshine City — a salon meets boutique offering well known brands like Scout, Lily Pulitzer, and Simply Southern.

When you’re ready to explore, the perfect daytime activity awaits. The Battle of Musgrove Mill State Park and Historic Site is central to this area’s history. What was once the location of a Revolutionary War battle is now a park with beautiful natural features. Some of the features of the park include Horseshoe Falls, a fishing pond, and the Enoree River.

Willington, SC

Currently, the community of Willington is supporting a mission to become a “Book Town,” or a town that “supports a nonprofit book store at its center” and maintains a dedication to the history and culture at its roots.

If you blink you’d probably miss Willington. But, don’t let that fool you, because this area of South Carolina has a lot to offer, both culturally and naturally. The Willington bookshop is the

108 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

center of this community, and features beautiful murals and over 40,000 new and used books. It’s a book lover's dream. There’s also The History Center, which includes local artifacts and genealogical resources. Visitors can tour the historic Daniel P. Juengst Railroad and Post Office Building as well as visit the African American Cultural Center. While in town, visit Mt. Carmel Cafe for some solid BBQ.

McCormick, SC

Then continue to the lovely downtown of McCormick to see the Dorn Mill, a former cotton gin that is now a nonprofit. Dorn Mill hosts a variety of events like the local farmers market and annual Festival of the Trees. Next, experience the vibrant local artists’ scene at MACK, the McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah and then go for a walk around downtown to take in the history and several beautiful murals.

As far as natural beauty in this area, there are several standouts. A bit outside of town, stop by Hickory Knob State Resort Park for a variety of outdoor activities like camping, archery, and even golf. This was our first visit to a State Park with a golf course — and a nice one at that. In nearby Mt. Carmel, you will find one of the most picturesque campgrounds we’ve seen while traveling. The beautiful Hester’s Bottoms family campground is located on the shores of Lake Thurmond.

Trenton, SC

Trenton is a small 1.27-square-mile town in the Eastern part of Edgefield County. Formed in the late 1960s following the advent of the Charlotte, Columbia, and Augusta Railroad, the current town location was initially a stagecoach way station. Quaint and slow are this place’s charm! The town square has a single mural, a handful of benches, the cute Trenton Branch Ben Tillman Library, an homage to Veterans, several historical homes and beautiful churches, and lots of peace and quiet. It truly feels like a bygone era.

The restaurant, opened in 2021, provides a space for guests to enjoy food, music and culture under one roof. Chef Erica McCier has recently been named one of South Carolina's 2023 Chef Ambassadors, a first for the Old 96 District region. Erica is an inspiring and impactful businesswoman and chef, hailed for her creative dishes. What's surprising is that Erica never planned on becoming a chef or restaurant owner. She was previously a middle school visual arts teacher. However, health problems — specifically, kidney disease and renal failure

MOUNTAIN ESCAPES

Greystone Inn

Lucy Armstrong built her estate on Lake Toxaway in North Carolina in 1915. Over a hundred years later, her home has grown into an elegant testament to the passion she felt for the area with The Greystone Inn. The natural splendor of the Nantahala National Forest surrounds the inn's stone facade: The architecture evokes turn-of-the-century glamor that has evolved to embrace modern simplicity. Swiss mountain chalets inspire the large square windows and gray board siding with white trim. The estate was privately owned until 1985 and underwent many renovations. Its most recent improvement occurred after the property exchanged hands in 2015. The Greystone Inn closed its doors in January of that year as it underwent a multi-milliondollar restoration. It reopened in May 2018. greystoneinn.com

Half-Mile Farm, a luxury country inn owned and operated by Old Edwards, is a place where serenity is paramount. AWARD SEASON

How David Moritz’s impeccable vision and drive for innovation changed an industry.

IIn 2007, David Moritz was an ambitious young man fresh out of law school. Fifteen years later, he’s the visionary behind a luxury design firm that puts out the industry’s most iconic trophies and awards–the Emmy, the Golden Globe, the Dancing With the Stars trophy. In addition to an impressive roster of private and corporate clients, David’s company, Society Awards, also designs the MTV VMA Moon Person Award, Koons National Arts Award, CFDA Fashion Award, Billboard Music Award, and the CMT Award.

In the past decade and a half, David explains that he’s “had quite the education — in accounting, marketing, advertising, art and design… luxury brand building and strategy, and every busi-

ness operation in between.” What started out as just him, in an office on Wall Street, has now grown into an industry-disrupting firm with more than 50 employees and two factories.

Society Awards, born in New York City, now calls Charlotte, NC its home. How David got here, and how he envisioned and then made manifest a business so successful and prestigious without any initial intention to become an entrepreneur is a story well worth telling. Here is David in his own words.

What sets Society Awards apart from the rest of the industry? What sets me personally apart in the awards business is probably endurance, taste and professionalism. What sets Society

Awards apart is nearly everything — we’re the only luxury brand focusing on awards, so it starts with being an actual valuable brand compared to generic, and it includes world class logistics, to award-winning (yes!) design, to the highest level of customer service, and expertise in all we do. From the quality of the products and the classiness of the service, to the unparalleled designs and artwork, you come to Society Awards for a luxury experience, and we build long term relationships.

What is your day-to-day role like now?

I still wear many hats, but thankfully I have great support and assistance all around. The collaboration effectiveness with my Co-Creative Director Vicky Fotopoulou is a work of art in itself, and everyone is contributing to our success in all departments. [There’s] an aspect of quality control which I see as a major part of my function. In addition to supervising all the departments, I also act as the CMO, setting the course for the next big innovation.

How did you end up in Charlotte, and why is it a good home for Society Awards?

My wife Charlotte (coincidentally her name) and I basically “interviewed” towns all over the country to move to from New York City pre-pandemic. Charlotte has such a wonderful confluence of appealing traits. It’s then become a great home for Society Awards for the same reason — great people, excitement about the future, pride in what we do. Society Awards always will be a New York City brand in style and passion.

How did you first begin to bring on such prestigious clients?

Unbelievably, I did that first. That was my plan — first get the most visible prestigious clients, then use that to entice a large number of corporate accounts. Little did I know that I’d be so good at reworking the prestigious awards that I would spend about half our company’s existence just doing that before we could turn attention to a wider audience. It’s important to point out that so many of our corporate accounts are also

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 127

prestigious. Prestige is all about context — there may be a professional association and the award we make for them is the most prestigious thing in their circle.

How would you describe your own artistic tastes?

Taste and style develops throughout your life, doesn’t it? I wonder if my tastes have more or less settled now or if they will continue to evolve. My mother cautioned me, “Don’t buy any expensive furniture when you’re young, because your tastes will change four times before you’re 40!” That was true! One of the strengths of our approach is to have the discipline to put aside personal preferences, while pre -

serving good aesthetic judgment across all styles. Society Awards has its own baseline style that is fairly recognizable. It’s difficulty through simplicity, letting the form and material carry the beauty, timeless design within innovations, something Mid Century, but contemporary with a luxury tone.

What is your favorite part about your work?

The variety of tasks and how I’ve seen it grow from this idea to this tangible thing that others can see. What was in my mind is now in front of everyone’s face. If we want to collaborate with another luxury brand, they see us as a

peer right away. That is never easy to create whole-cloth, especially in a niche or a new category, and in only fifteen years. Now that it’s here, it’s very fun to work with!

Having achieved a "pinnacle of success" in your field, what goals and aspirations remain that keep you truly motivated?

Well that’s very sweet to say, thank you! First, the world keeps changing so we have to keep at the forefront of innovation in all the areas that will matter to our clients, so that we can continue to provide them with this unparalleled experience. No rest for the weary in that regard!

Second, once you’ve created this powerful tool, you would want to use it right? See what else you can do with it and keep building it stronger! Who knows what Society Awards can do, who we could partner with or what collaboration opportunities exist for everyone’s benefit. It might be that Society Awards can do things that only my kids will have the vision to see, as they grow up with new technology and new industries.
