How to measure a Croissant?
T
he croissant was firstly photo shooted as a reference for the orthogonal drawing. The photo was scaled to 1:1 and drawing was done on top of the original photos. From the task a great range of drawing techniques have been expored including shading, hatching and photoshop rendering. Sectional cuts had been developed into an axonometric drawing, working lines have been cleared in the final presentation.

M2: NEW MARIO WORLD
I
n this final drawing, I incorporated colour palette from the original two-dimensional drawing to recreate the axonometric drawing. Different intensities of colours have been used to create the depth of objects. The moon, together with the left-up plain has been served as the primary light source of the world, and all shadows and highlights has been created to comply it. A new platform has been created below the cloud to give more extensity as well as better balance vertically. The texture of the green columns have been done using curve tools through anchors of uniform distance, then coloured using bucket tool and expanded. A purple background is selected to give more contrast against the white cloud towards the final presentation.

he setup for hand drawing contains: pencils, fineliners, eraser, pencil shapener, adjustable set square, A3 tracing paper and set square.

he drawing has been rotated at 45 degrees. A set square is used as a reference of the horizontal lines and the adjustable set square used as a reference for the vertical ones.

he pattern and elements created has been grouped and duplicated in the drawing.

added a few characters into the world to form a more dynamic environment. I have also standarised the curves in the cloud and the base to achieve technical accuracy. The cloud has been recreated with decorations of a moon and stars to serve as an additional inspiration to the world. The Mario, by trying to catch the star, forms a short story to the whole composition.
M3: PAPER LANDSCAPE
The making of new landscape
T
he final panelised landscape, A strong light sets directly above has enabled this glow from the pattern. Although the landscape still has some flaws, it manages to maintain the landscape details from its origin. A glowing effect has been captured with a strong lighting above, which fit its design intension. The crafting process of the model has been the most challenging part of the module. Due to a thicker page, the model is harder to stick together and holds the tension. The final presentation can be thuse improved in my opinion.

range of prototype has been tested with Ivory paper. The star prototype that I created has a square base and will be easier to manipulate in the paneling tools.

symmetric arrangement of pattern has been selected to achieve a more balancing visual impact. The pattern has a hierarchy at the centre and all variations are spread in a circular fashion. The pattern when observed from the top is supposed to be stars at differing angles. Around half of the 3D patterns are replaced with 2D patterns with a square cutout in the middle. The panel is designed to show a sparkling effect to mock a rippling pond reflecting a night sky.

sed Scissors to cut out the pattern and then used pen knife to cut out the details and score. Then the tabs are glued together using UHU glue.
M4: INVISIBLE CITY
City & Memory: Isidora
I
n the isometric design I have incorporated the set notations into my own interpretation to deliver the story of Isidora. The
QUAD has been divided into an old memory and a realistic world. A time line has been used to indicate not only the main character’s movement as the time elapses but also the life time of this individual as all small section in the quad represents a different period of one’s life. A large group of people peppered with desires has been added into the middle zone of the QUAD to further divide the right wing (reality) from the left wing (memory). I have managed to recreate the actual events mentioned in the story into the isometric view. The mood as shown on the notation is a represention of the ‘old man’s’ mood alone his journey.

ith the ‘Past’ theme I have chosen some decayed and damaged objects to indicate its memorial nature and also as a subtle symbolism of the termination of such glamorous memory. The characters were chosen to reflected the story line, focusing on conflicts and affection of humans. Violin positioned to be floating around in the space and the foggy environment were to emphasise the surreal atmosphere.

he reflective, or realistic region was designed with more solid and heavy environment like bricks and concrete. I played around with the texture of the ground to make it appeared liquid, implying the subtle emotion of the man’s reflection. The broken violin echoed the one in the first perspective, as a symbolism of the shattered desires. Two dysfunctional robots, as a replacement of the old men who were sitting with him in the city, were placed neared the main character, the owner of this memory palace. They symbolises a shared loneliness and detachment of the main character. Outside the Quad was a space full of small islands - the memories of others, floating in the sky. it is my interpretation of the concept of ‘memory’ - a private, independent space that stores precious events of one’s life.

hroughout the semester, I have learned different approach towards design and representation. With the thorough study of my unique croissant, I practised different drawing techniques including pencil shading and hatching. The lectures helped me clarify different approaches in representing scalar information through orthogonal and axonometric drawings. The Mario world following up helped my to deepen my proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator. It also incoporated my learning in module 1 through the creation of my own axonometic mario landscape. The lectures helped me to gain knowledges regarding to the techniques and history of untilising flatness and projection to deliver information through two-dementional media. 3D landscape challenged my model making skill, as well as introduced me to Rhino. Lectures in this module helped me to explored the creation of pattern and the understanding of surface. I particularly enjoyed the case study of the pattern developed for the Federation Square.
EFLECTION R
The final project helped me to think and present information visually through notation and persectives. I learnt how to utilise 3D, 2D and pixel-based tools interactivly to produce a final product. The lecture that discussed the difference between Frame and Field - the latter one without boundary or hierarchy, was very inspiring to me. Throughout the the semester I also learned to use Indesign and wix, which are some rather unfamiliar tools for me previously. I have also practised my abilities in oral expression and critical thinking through pin-ups. One particular module that I found that I could have improved is the 3D landscape model. It is only after the representation that I realised that I shouldn’t stick to the symmetric arrangement of the landscape too much that it lost originality to some extend. This was partially led by a lack of communication with the staff during the module due to its shorter timetable. In addition, a rather thick material was used to make the model, which is harder to manipulate. In consequence, the final quality was influenced, which is a pity here. Overall I think the course was benefical for me in understanding the basic language used in the design field. It is also a good beginning for me to practise and to get familiar with the tools and skills for visual representation before entering more insightful study.
