Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Sign represents the relationship between form and content in an arbitrary and immaterial way. Symbol is a sign which refers to its dynamic object through a formal representation, Diagram, on the contrary, do not play a representational role for their dynamic object, rather, it mediate between physical constructs or percepts on an organisational level.

Precedent Analysis
Vert Lett: Aires Mateus - Radix. (2012). [Architecture]. Left: Isometric View. Top: Elevational View. Upper left: Top View.
Boolean difference is the main tool used to construct the structure, Three spheres were constructed using the designer’s dimension to accurately cut out the interior volume of the architecture. Bases were created to add extra information regarding to the landscape.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Design should always leave rooms for users to interpret and provide alternatives. Functions should be well considered but not to be utilised in a stubborn or plain way, The precedent pavilion used arch element to blend into its context whilst created a range of spherical spaces to allow different social or entertaining needs. The largest domelike space facing the pedestrian line allows for social interaction , where as the space facing the water provides a relatively more private use for the landscape or self-reflection.

Week Two
Isometric
Aires Mateus - Radix. Isometric View.
WATER
The isometric precedent is orientated with the water scenery on the site to get clearer idea of the landscape context of the structure. It is discovered that the position of the structure and its open arch interacts with the water to extend its threshold gradually outward to cease the boundary between the enclosed and natural environment. The internal three spherical spaces encourages social connections or resting activities, whereas dynamic actions are likely to be found at their intersecting parts. The evidence of construction is shown by the lines created by each metal panel, which further clarify the internal quality of the structure. Line weights and uniform shadows adjusted to create greater contrasts between each semi-spherical spaces to create spatial relationship.

Threshold
The diagram is constructed into the structure itself, the main circulation space (gradient to describe the intensity of usage) and the circulation paths that is likely to happen in the space.
The threshold diagram is constructed into the solids, voilds (with interaction with water langscape) and the boolean cutter that eventually created the semi-open soace in the precident study,

Process
The boolean cutter positioned according to the designer’s plan view.
The Solid ready to be cut. Angle of the ellipse calculated with based on the plan view. Boolean difference is used to generate the overall form.

Appendix
Process - Void Diagram
Base created by trimming through its top view, then manipulating individual plane’s height.
The volume of the structure created by cutting through the structure and its base.
8
Appendix
Process
Contour lines generated in perpendicular directions to provide more spatial information about the void.
