Don’t suffer from segregation anxiety One of the most important components of any waste and recycling programme is correct segregation. If items aren’t separated into different containers as they are disposed of, contamination can occur and the best of intentions can go to waste. With these top tips, Grundon Waste Management’s Scott Williams, head of contract management, says segregation doesn’t have to be difficult. Interrogate your waste Asking a reputable waste management company to audit your waste is a valuable exercise. After all, you can only work out how to manage waste properly if you understand the full range of waste materials and the quantities involved. For example, within the hospitality industry, the sheer volume of glass which is thrown away is easy to underestimate and we are often asked for additional containers to meet increased demand. Central (waste) stations The days of everyone having an under desk bin should be well and truly behind us. Having a waste receptacle beside you begging to be filled encourages the random disposal of everything from banana skins to ink cartridges and waste paper. We suggest replacing these with corridor bins or waste stations that have different 18 DECEMBER 2018

compartments for mixed recycling and general waste. And given that items such as ink cartridges are actually classified as hazardous waste in a commercial environment, introducing a Haz-Box container is the perfect solution for keeping small amounts of hazardous waste stored safely until collection is required.

Space invaders As experts in waste management, we recognise that every business is different and not everyone will have the same amount of space for additional bins and containers. That’s why Grundon’s approach is different. Instead of a ‘one size fits all’ attitude, we take the time to identify the best solutions. Recently, in one large hospitality complex, we installed dozens of new internal recycling bins in a multitude of shapes and sizes. Some are tall and thin to fit in smaller spaces, others are larger single use (mixed recycling) bins, some are stackable, and the remainder are dual or triple purpose (a combination of mixed recycling, general waste and food waste), depending on where they need to be situated. It’s the same with larger equipment, such as compactors. We will consider the available space and make suitable recommendations. WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

staff to ensure they understand the reasons behind the need to recycle and manage waste correctly.

Talk talk Having the best recycling and segregation system in place is no good if no-one understands how it works. Employee education is critical and at Grundon we work both directly with facilities management teams and staff, as well as with cleaning company partners to spread the word about segregation. We regularly hold Tenant Waste Engagement Days and Employee Waste Awareness Days, complete with talks, interactive games and plenty of literature to help spread the word about recycling. Often we organise specialist training for cleaning teams too. At one of our shopping centre customers, it is the centre’s cleaning team who are

primed to check the waste bins as they empty them, removing any items which have been put into the wrong bins. And to make this easier for them, we replaced black sacks with clear ones to help with faster identification of waste and to avoid contamination. Way to go Constant signposting in the shape of posters and signage with diagrams and photos helps remind employees and visitors where different types of waste should be disposed of. Our inhouse design team can produce these in a range of styles to ensure they are informative but not obtrusive. We also produce toolkits and handbooks for

Waste away We know that types of waste will vary tremendously depending on different sectors and that’s why we take a custom approach. Working with one specialist who can handle everything from mixed recycling and the disposal of confidential documentation, to hazardous waste or food waste, is both more efficient and effective. One point of contact means issues can be solved quickly and easily and reporting data and statistics can be collected together to showcase improvements and identify where future services can be added or changes made. The compliance conundrum One of the very best reasons for working with a professional waste management specialist is the topic of compliance. Good segregation is a key part of this - ink cartridges, cleaning fluids and aerosols should not be disposed of in general waste. Uneaten sandwiches in a paper recycling bin can mean the whole bin can no longer be sent for reprocessing, while wrongly disposed of batteries can literally fan the flames of contamination. Keeping on top of all the necessary rules and regulations can be a challenge for the best of in-house teams and that’s why, as experts in waste, we guarantee to keep our customers compliant. The final word In summary, correct segregation of waste is not a luxury, it is a fact of day-to-day good waste management practice. One which will reap its own rewards in the shape of improved recycling figures, achieving zero waste to landfill, and rebates that can add to your bottom line. Simpler hand hygiene offers wider protection HAND hygiene has never been more important. Studies suggest around 80% of all infectious diseases - including influenza and the common cold - are spread by touch. This link has been known for years, so it is perhaps all the more surprising that so few people wash their hands after going to the toilet or before handling food. Apparently, just 39% of us wash our hands before eating. Sadly, news about some outbreak or another is never very far away. The UK has recently experienced the worst winter flu season this decade so it would seem there is more work to be done. Improving hand hygiene would not only

push plates (which as frequently touched areas are a harbour for bacteria) and secrete a tiny amount of anti-bacterial gel when touched to go through the door. The anti-bacterial gel kills any bacteria that you may have deposited on standard doors and kills any bacteria that you may have picked up. The truth is that up to 80% of infections are transmitted by hands - as soon as you touch a door, you risk becoming contaminated from the people who have used the door before you. Breaking this cycle is pivotal in terms of infection control. So by boosting hand washing practices and introducing technology such as Surfaceskins to your healthcare facility, you’ll be going a long way towards boosting overall hand hygiene and cutting infection rates dramatically. Hand hygiene - the first step in tackling antimicrobial resistance The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest threats to global health in today’s world, with the current estimated cost of AMR to the NHS in excess of £180 million per annum [1]. Although the 2013-2018 AMR Strategy and Public Health England’s ‘Keep Antibiotics Working’ national campaign in 2017 has raised awareness of AMR, the threat of AMR needs continual focus. Paul Jakeway, marketing director at Deb, explains why hand hygiene is the first crucial step in preventing AMR and why serious action needs to be taken now to protect the future of the NHS. The Nilfisk EcoFlex system has also been a game changer within the range. The system carefully controls water and chemical usage enabling a temporary boost of water, detergent and brush pressure for more aggressive spot cleaning. It provides for complete consumption control without compromising on cleaning performance and, importantly, also allows chemical free cleaning. Tests have shown that using the Ecoflex system on a professional scrubber dryer results in an average detergent saving of 50%. So what of the future? The food and drink industry alone has set a target for water reduction of 20% from the 2007 baseline by the year 2020. It is clear that all efforts must be increased if targets are to be met and cost reductions are to be utilised. Further developments in autonomous cleaning will undoubtedly change the face of cleaning as increased productivity, data driven insights and the conservation of resources become key drivers for innovation and new product development. Together with Pall Mall, its specialist trade partner responsible for the Australia/ New Zealand region, Unger won against 25 competitors in the category. The jury, consisting of managing directors of major building services companies, the president of the Australian trade association, and the editor-in-chief of the magazine Inclean, selected the erGO! clean floor cleaning system for its special ergonomic properties and innovative design. Errol Goldberg, managing director of Pall Mall, said: “Winning the 2019 Inclean innovation award is a real endorsement of

has been due to strong inflation, capacity constraints, ‘force majeure’ supplier events, and an increasingly stricter global regulatory landscape. Freight costs have also increased, due to the development of dangerous goods transportation regulations, higher taxes and diesel costs, driver shortages, and a strong overall economy. Gaetano Redaelli, global president of Diversey’s Professional Division, said: “Though we continually focus on internal programmes to improve our cost position, the impact of the cumulative market increases in the past months, and the forecasted increases in the coming period, can no longer be mitigated solely by Diversey. Therefore, Diversey will be implementing price adjustments in Europe in the short term, which may range between 3-7% depending on the product category and the country.” WWW.DIVERSEY.COM TROJAN Battery Co has announced the Trillium line of Trojan Intelligent Lithium batteries.
