EDITOR’S LETTER C&M

The Cleaning Show 2021: New dates confirmed

The Cleaning Show 2021, originally scheduled to take place in March, has confirmed revised dates for this year’s event, taking place at London’s Excel Exhibition Centre – 8-10 June 2021. Stuart Dacre, Cleaning Show event director, said: “So much has been achieved by cleaning professionals during the pandemic and the Cleaning Show promises to be a productive and safe environment to celebrate the role the industry has played in the fight against COVID-19. In addition to the exhibition of leading manufacturers and suppliers, event highlights will include: a highly topical conference programme, the CSSA Innovation Showcase – new for 2021, a dedicated demonstration area – new for 2021, and the return of the Window Cleaning World Cup. All existing exhibitor bookings and visitor registrations remain in place and will be transferred automatically to the new dates. We look forward to seeing you there.” The Cleaning Show is one of Europe’s leading events for cleaning and hygiene professionals, jointly owned by the British Cleaning Council and Quartz Business Media, publisher of this magazine. The British Cleaning Council invests its proceeds from the show back into the cleaning industry in the form of research, grants, consultation services, campaigns, and generating positive publicity for the sector. The Cleaning Show attracts the industry’s biggest names, either as sponsors, exhibitors or speakers. This in turn ensures the event is attended by senior professionals who want to gain insights into what is happening in their sector, experience all the latest products and innovations, participate in a cuttingedge conference programme, and enjoy three days of high calibre networking. The Cleaning Show 2021 conference programme will be a key highlight of the event and will provide a forum to present and discuss new developments, and consider the critical next

steps for an industry that has placed itself on the frontline of public health and safety delivery. Topics to be included within the Cleaning Show 2021 conference programme include: the new normal for cleaning post-COVID-19 - a look at the role of cleaning in protecting public health and safety; ready for anything - the role of training and education in ensuring cleaning operatives are armed with all the skills they need, and the role of apprenticeships in developing a clear route of entry into the profession; the rise of the robots - how autonomous cleaning can support and enhance current cleaning practices; baseline protection - the role of antimicrobial surface protection in ensuring a clean environment; fogging - best practice and technology to ensure the ultimate result; hand hygiene for the new normal - systems and products to protect the public at work and at play; proving a point - the role of testing in ensuring (and proving) a clean and safe environment; technology matters - a contract cleaner’s view on the importance of employing new technology in delivering a modern cleaning service; and the green agenda - environmental objectives for the cleaning sector. Plus much more! As conference director, I look forward to welcoming you to Excel – if you haven’t already done so, please register for your free exhibition and conference pass at: www.cleaningshow.co.uk. I wish you a clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

BICSc to launch NHS compliant cleaning skills BICSC has announced the imminent launch of a selection of NHS compliant cleaning skills which have been adapted from the Institute’s long-established Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite. The selected skills will be compliant with both PAS 5748:201 and the draft ‘NHS National standards of healthcare cleanliness manual’. The Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite now has over 40 skills, each providing a methodology behind the task, from the materials and PPE required, best practice for delivery, and a standard operating procedure. BICSc has recently formed a successful working relationship with 2gether, the in-house FM service provider for East Kent Hospitals – coincidently, the the first to roll out these adapted skills with the new Trust’s standards. A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG C&M

High level representation for our industry coming soon? Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports. AFTER a year of doom and gloom, I am extremely heartened to read about the British Cleaning Council’s (BCC) ongoing efforts to set up an All-Party Parliamentary Group to represent the cleaning and hygiene sector in the Houses of Parliament. The aim is to give the industry a voice in Parliament, allow it to influence discussions, debate and pose questions, and to influence ministers and the government. The BCC has been working to attract prominent MPs to join the APPG and it is hoped that approval could be granted early in 2021. Whilst an APPG is run by and for members of the Commons and Lords, it can also offer opportunities for organisations within the industry to take part in its activities and administration. As you may have heard me say before in this column, the many individual trade bodies that represent different strands of our industry work incredibly hard to promote members’ interests. Predominantly, however, they are run on a voluntary basis by senior execs of industry companies, meaning they do not always have the resource to push hard in national political circles. So it is hugely encouraging that the BCC, which is the overarching organisation representing all the key industry bodies, is fighting hard to secure

top level representation in Westminster. If the concerns of our industry have been overlooked by politicians in the past, the main reason is surely that they have not understood the unique challenges we face, particularly on the contracting side. The reason for this lack of understanding may well be a result of our failure to communicate those issues forcefully enough. It will be one of the APPG’s objectives to put this right. The timing of the initiative is perfect. Not so many months ago, our industry gained national prominence in the fight against COVID-19. Since then, it’s fair to say we have receded again to our more accustomed, semi-invisible position in the shadows, but with the difference now that our professionalism is more readily appreciated by clients and the world at large. The reward for such professionalism should be an acknowledgement at national level that cleaning, with all its constituent parts, is a vital industry in its own right. There is no reason why a top 10 industry employing 1.6 million people, or 5% of the UK’s workforce, should only be discussed in the context of its relationship to facilities management or environmental services. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels frustrated when filling out an online

form for a conference or event and ends up selecting ‘other’ from the ‘industry’ drop-down box. In addition to lobbying on employee health and safety, I am looking forward to progress on the real living wage, essential worker status and benefits, and initiatives to address the shrinking pool of labour we are witnessing due to the announcement and now the implementation of immigration controls. I hope we will also reach a stage, as a result of the pandemic, where the procurement of cleaning contracts becomes an enlightened process that enshrines certain minimum enforceable standards of operation and compliance necessary to safeguard health and hygiene at client premises. Lastly, and maybe more optimistically, I am also envisaging a future where members of our business community tour schools and colleges promoting cleaning as an industry with clearly-defined career opportunities and nationally respected qualifications at all levels. It will be a magnificent achievement if the BCC succeeds in the establishment of the APPG. After that, the sky’s the limit. WWW.DOCCLEANING.COM

SPECIAL REPORT: COVID-19

COVID-19: Cleaning remains on the front line Neil Nixon reports. Following on from the features in the previous nine issues of C&M looking at the frontline role the cleaning sector continues to play in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, I am continuing to post news, new product information or video interviews/webinars online to allow for the more immediate dissemination of any updates. Please take a look at www.cleaningmag.com – content is changing on a daily basis. As previously, I will continue to use the pages of C&M to focus on cleaning during the pandemic in detail and, as with this month’s column, to seek advice on best practice from recognised industry experts, and to learn from the experience of others.

Cradle-to-cradle certification for sustainable products THE Sure range of plant-based, 100% biodegradable cleaning products from Diversey has been awarded gold certificates by the Cradle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute. Cradle to Cradle Certified is a globally recognised measure of safer, more sustainable products made for a circular economy. In addition to the new Cradle-to-Cradle certification, Sure products meet typical ecocertification criteria and, where applicable, are all EU Ecolabel certified. The products in the Sure range cover all routine and daily cleaning requirements in kitchens and washrooms including personal care. Each has been formulated to deliver superior professional results while maximising safety and gentleness for people and the environment. The entire range is manufactured from environmentally responsible plant-based ingredients from renewable resources. These ingredients are typically derived from by-

Diversey enhances the sustainability credentials of the range by offering many of the products in its unique dosing and dispensing systems: SmartDose, QuattroSelect, Divermite, Soft Care Line, and IntelliCare. Water is only added at the point of use which means smaller packs are required to support the same cleaning operation. This reduces packaging requirements as well as minimising transport, handling, storage, and recycling burdens. Moreover, because these platforms enable accurate and consistent preparation of highperformance solutions, there is less wastage or
