Need to achieve a next level clean? Vileda Professional is proud to support the cleaning industry in the fight against the ongoing pandemic. In every product and system we develop, we always strive to provide the highest level of cleaning performance and hygiene benefits. We know this could not be accomplished without the extra-ordinary efforts of our customers and their cleaning operators. We take this occasion to recognise and thank them for helping to prevent the spread of Sars-Cov-19. As pioneers in the development and launch of microfibers, we are continuously pushing the limits of this technology. The result is the outstanding mechanical cleaning performance of our textiles, validated scientifically by independent test institutes. We believe the higher the levels of hygiene we can help you maintain, will help you achieve your very own ‘next level clean’.

EDITOR’S LETTER C&M
It’s good to be back
After 18 extraordinary months where meetings have been virtual and face-to-face has meant screen-to-screen, it is fantastic to have the opportunity to bring the cleaning, FM and related industries back together at The Cleaning Show at London’s ExCel from 2-4 November. This event always offers the greatest opportunity for colleagues to meet, but this year the occasion will be really special. Hair might be greyer, waistlines might be larger, but the opportunity to meet up in person once again will be cause for celebration! And there’s so much happening at this year’s show. In addition to cutting-edge exhibits from leading cleaning suppliers - including Numatic, ICE, Karcher UK, MITIE, Nilfisk, and Killis - attendees will have the opportunity to visit the conference theatre and participate in a number of on-floor events, including the CSSA’s Innovation Showcase and the Window Cleaning World Cup. Enhancements in cleaning practices have moved ahead at pace since the outbreak of the pandemic. The Cleaning Show 2021 conference programme will provide a forum to present and discuss all these developments, and consider the critical next steps for an industry that has placed itself on the frontline of public health and safety delivery. In addition to the carefully curated programme, the Cleaning & Support Services Association (CSSA) will be hosting afternoon presentations and panel discussions within the conference theatre looking at topics including sustainability and new cleaning technologies. The conference opens with a presentation by Jim Melvin, chairman of the British Cleaning Council, looking at one of the triumphs of the lockdown period – the formation of the APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors. There is little doubt that, in terms of government and professional recognition, our industry has been afforded insufficient attention in the past.
The last 18 months have changed that perception and, without doubt, the public’s view of the industry and - more importantly - its brave and professional cleaning operatives. The profile of cleaning and hygiene has never been so prominent. The strategic approach undertaken in the formation and ongoing work related to the All Party Parliamentary Group for our sector has been vital as it includes so many areas that are of primary importance to our industry’s future. This includes the introduction of a recognised apprenticeship scheme, something Delia Cannings will be discussing during her presentation on Wednesday 3rd at 12.00 noon. Full details of the conference programme can be found on pages 38-42 of this issue and an overview of the exhibiting companies can be found from page 46 onwards. This is going to be a great event, bringing our industry back together to celebrate all that has been achieved during the pandemic, and looking at solutions to meet future challenges. The Official Show Guide can be found within this issue, starting on Page 35. If you haven’t already registered to attend the event, you can do so – free of charge – at: www.cleaningshow.co.uk. I wish you a clean, tidy and healthy month ahead…and I look forward to seeing you – in person – at The Cleaning Show.

Step 2: hand drying Paper towels are the only option for businesses looking to prioritise staff and visitor safety. Unlike hot air dryers - which blow germs and bacteria around the washroom - paper towels are single use, convenient and safe, capturing any germs left behind after washing. As with hand soap/foam, choosing the right dispenser is crucial. Both manual and touch-free versions allow easy access to a fresh paper towel (and accommodate rolled or folded paper), meaning each user can remove a paper towel without the need to touch additional surfaces. There are even auto cut dispensers available, perfect for reducing waste and dispensing just the right amount of paper per use. Antimicrobial hand dryers improve hand hygiene compliance Miquel Canut, CEO of Veltia, reports. ENCOURAGING visitors to wash and dry their hands is imperative for keeping bacterial crosscontamination at bay. However, supplying inefficient or contaminated drying methods can easily reintroduce those same microbes, making the whole process redundant. This is particularly true in shared washrooms, where bacteria can spread from various sources, and the warm, moist environment provides an ideal setting for mould and mildew to flourish. Electronic hand dryers have undergone enormous refinement in recent years, with significant upgrades in terms of both aesthetics and airflow, as well as the introduction of noise dampening systems to make them more user friendly. The next obvious step was to mitigate the problem caused by bacteria and other microbes that are a number of antimicrobial chemistries that

Falls and slips are still the most common form of non-fatal accidents on the job (29%). These hazards affect cleaning staff directly, given their daily exposure to risks whilst going about their work. Robotic solutions mean that human error and exposure to hazards of this type can be significantly reduced. Redefining priorities in the wake of health fears The benefits to cleaning staff and facilities of deploying cleaning robots are not only material, but psychological. Employee fear surrounding cleanliness when returning to work has been well documented: cleaning operatives have had to take on hazardous work in the midst of

COVID, putting themselves at risk to make sure hygiene standards are maintained. Accenture reported that owing to COVID-19, 64% of respondents feared for their health, and 82% were concerned for the health of others. Brain Corp’s most recent survey bears this out, finding that 72% of retailers don’t expect consumers to reduce their expectations of cleanliness, even as mass vaccination programmes make headway against the virus. The use of robotic floor scrubbers has allowed cleaning operatives to meet these heightened hygiene demands. What’s more, robots collect invaluable data while cleaning, meaning that their performance can be accurately tracked and assessed. This provides verifiable evidence of their effectiveness, replacing assumption with fact and taking the guesswork out of cleaning operations. Our homes are meant to be where we can support the aging process – we don’t want to make it worse.” At Croll, the system is now being used as the main cleaning product at all three care homes. Hill House, one of the three Croll care homes, cares for 20 residents. Its housekeeping team is led by Corroll Beale, who said: “We’re conscious of the amount of cleaning chemicals we use at Hill House. We aim to not use strong smelling chemical cleaners whenever we can, not just because of odour but also because we don’t want our residents to breathe in chemicals all day. Ultimately, we all want to create safe, welcoming spaces for our residents and protect the people working with them. SHOW GUIDE The global pandemic has seen cleaning and hygiene practices at the top of the agenda for business owners and the public alike. Showcasing the latest advances in cleaning practices and technologies - and celebrating the critical role the sector continues to play in managing COVID-19 - The Cleaning Show returns to ExCeL, London from 2-4 November 2021. The event is organised by the British Cleaning Council and Quartz Business Media – publisher of Cleaning & Maintenance magazine, the official media partner of the event. THE CLEANING SHOW 2021
WELCOME
Jim Melvin
Stuart Dacre
Chairman British Cleaning Council
Event Director Quartz Business Media
Following the last 18 months, and after such a long time since the last physical event, it is fantastic to come to the Cleaning Show in person again and meet friends and colleagues face to face. This is very much a chance to celebrate the huge contribution made by the cleaning and hygiene industry and our brave colleagues in the fight against COVID-19. Make no mistake, as the UK strives to recover from the pandemic, our staff will continue to play an essential role. The Cleaning Show has an important role in showcasing the products and services that will keep businesses and facilities - as well as critical buildings such hospitals and schools - safe going forward. But the show, which is the UK’s biggest and best trade show for our sector, has so much more to offer visitors with many of the sector’s leading progressive companies exhibiting a huge range of innovations, inventions, services, and products. This year’s free conference will be informative and interesting in covering a number of highly-relevant topics. Other attractions include the CSSA Innovation Showcase and the Window Cleaning and Carpet Cleaning Village. Finally, please don’t forget to come and visit us on the BCC stand. Enjoy!
On behalf of the organiser of the Cleaning Show, I am delighted to welcome you to London. As the UK goes back to work, we are delighted to connect the industry face-to-face once again, and look forward to sharing our best-in-class educational programme and exciting show features with visitors. This year we are delighted that the CSSA Innovation Showcase will be staged alongside the Cleaning Show. This is the first time the two events have co-located, and will offer visitors an insight into the technology and systems at the cutting edge of our sector. This Show Guide will help you make the most of your time at the Cleaning Show. Please take special note of the freeto-attend Conference Programme – more than ever before you will find presentations and discussions that will help you improve and shape the future of your business. I also invite you to stop by the Cleaning Show/C&M stand (K10) for information about the next Manchester and London Cleaning Shows. I wish you a successful and enjoyable attendance at the Cleaning Show 2021.

THE CLEANING SHOW 2021
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME *Free to attend. Details correct at time of print
Cleaning Show 2021 Conference Programme TUESDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2021 10:30
Biography: Jamie Wright has worked in the cleaning industry since joining his father’s business in 2000 as a trainee BDM. As a family business, Wright got involved in all areas of the company, which paid dividends when the business was acquired in 2009 by Incentive FM Group. He is now managing director of Incentive QAS.
Welcome and Opening Keynote.
11.00 The APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors – a critical role. By Jim Melvin, chairman, British Cleaning Council.
Synopsis: There is little doubt that, in terms of government and professional recognition, our industry has been afforded insufficient attention. This year has changed that perception and, without doubt, the public’s view of the industry and, more importantly, the brave and outstandingly professional cleaning and hygiene operatives. The profile of cleaning and hygiene has never been so prominent. The strategic approach undertaken in the formation and ongoing work related to the All Party Parliamentary Group for our sector has been vital as it includes so many areas that the BCC believes are of primary importance to our industry’s future. This presentation will look at the work of the APPG and it’s critical role in keeping cleaning and hygiene at the top of the political agenda. Biography: Following a career in sport, Jim Melvin is currently chairman of the British Cleaning Council and group CEO at Exclusive Contract Services. Jim is also Junior Warden at The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners and a director and BCC representative of the Cleaning and Support Services Association (CSSA).
11.30 The critical role of the cleaning industry post-pandemic. By Jamie Wright, managing director, Incentive QAS Ltd.
Synopsis: As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, the cleaning industry needs to remain focused on the safety of the public and ensure that the emphasis and importance of front-line staff continues into the new normal. This presentation will explore how the cleaning industry as a multi-faceted sector can work in cohesion to promote the importance of the essential services that it provides to keep people safe. 38 NOVEMBER 2021

From invisible workforce to key workers: why the real Living Wage matters now more than ever.
By Sebastian Bachelier, programme manager and project lead for the Recognised Service Providers, Living Wage Foundation, and Charlie Mowat, founder and CEO, The Clean Space. Synopsis: For the first time in the 20 years of the Living Wage movement, employers from across sectors and industries are recognising the crucial role cleaning operatives and other historically low paid yet essential workers play in running their businesses. With record numbers of organisations publicly signing up to the Living Wage Foundation and with a growth in demand for front line workers in cleaning, catering and security, could now be the perfect time to champion the real Living Wage in your contracts? Biographies: Sebastian Bachelier joined the Living Wage Foundation in 2018, where he leads on its work within the outsourcing and FM sectors through management of the Recognised Service Provider project. Sebastian has previous experience of the public and private sectors as well through student enrichment work at an inner-city college and c-suite recruitment for the NHS. Charlie Mowat founded The Clean Space in 2003 on a mission to improve the treatment of people working in the cleaning industry - including improving pay rates. Charlie is an active member of the Recognised Service Provider Leadership Group and a passionate advocate for the real Living Wage.

BIOHYGIENE has introduced three new products to its ready-to-use (RTU) range. By adding a kitchen cleaner, all surfaces and floor cleaner, and

complete washroom cleaner to its collection, the biotech manufacturer now offers a complete range of nine RTU cleaning products. “The issue with many RTU products on the market is that they are notoriously damaging to the environment, due to low dilution,” said Erum Ahmed, sales director at BioHygiene. “This means more product is used, resulting in greater plastic waste, increased CO2 emissions, extra storage, and added cost. Because of our innovative microbial and enzymatic solutions, our highly concentrated RTU products not only have the capability of achieving and
maintaining a deep clean on all hard surfaces, they help reduce costs, waste and storage requirements. Whilst improving operational efficiency per use, these RTU products also remove odours at source and are designed for ease of application and convenience for those wanting immediate and cost-effective access to high-power cleaning without the need to dilute. With environmental sustainability being a core principle, our RTU range is packaged using post-consumer resin (PCR) and is 100% recyclable - helping to reduce plastic waste. Alongside this, our use of renewable biotechnology reduces toxicity to human and aquatic life and reduces CO2e. We have also been recognised as carbon-neutral by Carbon Footprint Ltd.” WWW.BIOLOGICALPREPARATIONS.COM BOTHONGO Hygiene Solutions UK has unveiled a range of surface and air sanitisers ideally suited to the post-COVID era. The products have been tested to the most stringent EN standards and are designed for use in many sectors including front of house areas in restaurants, bars and hotels as well as offices and education establishments. The range includes: Covid Guard Air Sanitiser, Covid Guard Virucidal Fragranced and Covid Guard 80% Ethanol Aerosol Spray. Nick Winstone, CEO of Bothongo Hygiene Solutions, said: “The approach to hygiene is changing post-2020 and we have launched over 160 new products that are aligned to a post-COVID era, including our industryleading range of air and surface sanitisers. Sprayer turns salty water into powerful disinfectant… instantly
A handheld sprayer has been launched which turns mildly salty tap water into a powerful disinfectant which kills 99.9% of germs, bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19. The easy-HC10 uses an electrochemical reaction to instantly convert tap water containing just 0.25% salt into hypochlorous acid, a powerful disinfectant which the human body itself produces to fight infection. The easy-HC10 has been designed by Vapourtec, a manufacturer of flow chemistry equipment used throughout research and the chemicals industry. “Hypochlorous acid is a powerful disinfectant which our bodies already use to kill germs,” said Duncan Guthrie, Vapourtec’s founder and MD. “The easy-HC10
instantly produces it from nothing more than tap water and salt, eradicating the need for costly disinfectant.” WWW.VAPOURTEC.COM
