EDITOR’S LETTER C&M
A day is a long time in cleaning
As I sat down to write this column a month ago we were looking forward to what promised to be a very successful Manchester Cleaning Show followed by Interclean in Amsterdam. COVID-19, or Coronavirus, was something affecting other parts of the world. One month on, how things have changed. The Manchester Cleaning Show has been postponed but it has, however, secured new dates at Event City in Manchester – 15 and 16 September 2020 – so we look forward to welcoming the industry then. We’re delighted that we are able to bring you such positive news so quickly - something for the industry to look forward to once the summer has passed. Interclean has also been postponed and will also take place in the autumn, confirmed as 3-6 November 2020. The situation regarding COVID-19 is changing by the hour so the news pages of this publication aren’t the best vehicle to bring you updates, advice and industry comment. Please log in to www.cleaningmag.com where you will find daily updates in our news section. Where the printed version of Cleaning & Maintenance does have a role to play is in disseminating strategy, product and process information for
use by the professional cleaning sector as it takes a frontline position in reducing the impact of this crisis on public health. This issue looks specifically at the challenges faced by the healthcare sector and offers useful advice on what to do, how often, and with what. At this challenging time, my admiration for cleaning operatives, supervisors and the companies that oversee service delivery knows no bounds. The profile of the sector is heightened, its professionalism admired by all, and the critical importance of the service being delivered is appreciated by everyone. Stay safe, and keep up the exceptional work. Wishing you a happy, clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

2020 marks forty years of success for independent janitorial and cleaning distributor, Jangro. This year marks a milestone birthday for Jangro, the largest network of independent janitorial and cleaning distributors in the UK and Ireland, as the business celebrates forty years of success in the cleaning and FM industry. The Jangro concept was founded in 1980 by Bryan Squires, now Jangro’s Honorary Life President, by drawing together five likeminded independent distributors. In the past four decades, Jangro has become a dynamic force in the cleaning supply industry. Today it is the largest network of independent janitorial distributors in the UK and Ireland, with 46 strategically located distributors that provide national coverage with a local, fast and reliable delivery service. Joanne Gilliard, CEO at Jangro comments, ‘Jangro is 40 and still going strong! This is a huge achievement and we wouldn’t be where we are today without our brilliant suppliers and members. Our shared passion for quality, value, and innovation is just one of the reasons behind our success. We value the relationships that have grown over the years and would like to say a massive thank you to the supply chain involved in the network.
have come from, but equally important to keep looking ahead. Our vision for the future is to continue building on our great customer offer, and to work with our industry colleagues to ensure our sector maintains its high standards.’ As well as supplying high quality products at consistent, competitive prices, Jangro offers its customers added value. One such example is the Jangro LMS (Learning Management Solution), its fully interactive, versatile, and award-winning e-learning platform, to which each customer, and its staff has access to.
‘At milestone moments such as these, it’s great to look back to see where we

Cleaning for the future: what’s next for our industry? Alastair Scott, sales director at Robert Scott, discusses the results of his company’s latest customer research looking at the future of the cleaning industry - the challenges, the opportunities - and what businesses would like to see in this new decade. THE start of a new decade gives us all a chance to reflect, take stock and interrogate our business proposition and what we are delivering to our customers. With so much change, from environmental factors to increasing customer demand for new and innovative products, competitive pricing and speedy delivery - it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important. We asked people across the cleaning industry what matters most to their business and their customers and what changes they’d like to see in our industry. One thing was abundantly clear from our research – sustainability is top of the agenda. Over 80% (83.64%) of respondents told us they’re looking for more sustainable cleaning products using recycled materials, less packaging and more non-chemical alternatives. More than half (52%) also told us that they think their customers care a lot

Proposed immigration rules will have far-reaching effects Paul Thrupp, chairman of the British Cleaning Council, reports. THE new immigration rules being proposed by the Government recently are very concerning for our industry and, if these are approved by Parliament, then from 31 December this year overseas citizens would have to reach a minimum of 70 points to be able to work in the UK. The points system as we understand it includes 50 points for an English-speaking person who has the offer of a skilled job with an ‘approved sponsor’. Further points would be awarded for areas such as qualifications, the salary on offer and availability to work in a sector with shortages. The salary threshold for skilled workers wanting to come to the UK would be £25,600 and would drop as low as £20,480 for people in specific shortage occupations. But where does that leave the cleaning industry? As we are not counted as a skilled job and often our salaries are below the suggested levels, it will mean that, as it stands, there would be no visas for many of the workers our sector depends upon. The huge impact of these changes will be felt heavily in the cleaning and tourism industries in and around London. The Labour Force Survey for April to June 2019 showed that in London, 62% of the cleaning industry workforce was born overseas, whilst
the average figure for foreign-born workers in the industry as a whole is around 23%. Furthermore, the figures also show that 45% of cleaning and housekeeping managers and supervisors were born overseas. This role is hugely important to making sure that buildings, hotels and guest houses are kept clean and tidy. It is clear that, if the proposals go ahead as planned, this will result in a severe shortage of staff in the cleaning and tourism industries in and around London and other areas. We are told that we can just train up more UK people to fill the gaps, but I don’t believe there are hundreds of thousands of UK-born people available and willing to take these jobs. Additionally, the Government said we could recruit workers from the eight million 16 to 64-year-olds who are ‘economically inactive’ but many of these are students, carers or long-term sick. There’s no getting around it, it will be really difficult to replace all these overseas workers from UK-based citizens and the result will be that standards of cleanliness will plunge across London and other areas, leaving workplaces, shops, public buildings, and tourist attractions dirtier whilst some homeowners will also struggle to recruit domestic cleaners. This could
have a detrimental impact on the huge national effort for high hygiene standards needed in this day and age and none more so than now, in response to the current Coronavirus outbreak. A shortage of senior housekeeping staff could leave hotels and guesthouses grubbier. Cleanliness has been shown to be the most important factor when choosing a hotel so this, in turn, will discourage tourists from visiting the UK, hitting our economy further. Without new workers coming to the UK, I fear the sector will shrink, businesses will fold and prices will go up. The sector has grown incredibly strongly over the past few years but that would go into reverse. Currently, cleaning is one of the 10 biggest industries in the UK, worth over £54 billion and employing 1.63 million workers, so these developments will have far reaching effects for the whole of the country. To avoid this downward spiral, the Government must design immigration controls that allow in the essential overseas workers the cleaning sector needs. Cleaning must become a shortage occupation. In our sector, we often feel that the work of cleaners is overlooked, that we are an invisible workforce. But the Government would be making a major mistake to take us for granted when deciding immigration policy. WWW.BRITISHCLEANINGCOUNCIL.ORG

A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG C&M
Time to restate our industry’s professional credentials Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports. WE often complain that cleaning doesn’t get taken seriously enough as an industry, but with COVID-19 and the impending curtailment of ‘unskilled’ migration, I get the feeling that things might start to change during 2020. Whilst no-one likes to benefit from a crisis, this is definitely a moment for our industry to shine. Not only can we provide added value at a time of national concern over hygiene standards, we can also use this opportunity to advance the debate around pay rates for our very valuable workforce. Like every other cleaning contractor, at DOC we are doing our best to support clients in their efforts to contain COVID-19, whilst at the same time making absolutely sure that our own employees are safe. It highlights again the value of good cleaning and working with a responsible cleaning contractor. It also throws into perspective the potential difficulties of dealing with this sort of challenge if there were to be a severe shortage of front-line staff in the industry. Indeed, this could well be where we are headed if the Government’s immigration framework announced in February continues in its present form - ie a points system - but without the original promise of a temporary 12-month visa for ‘unskilled’ staff that was designed to ease the pressure on industries reliant on immigrant labour. The British Cleaning Council’s recent ‘Labour Force Survey’ shows that 62% of the cleaning workforce in London was born overseas, with the average figure for the UK at 23%. Many of these employees may not yet have applied for settled status to remain in the UK, that’s assuming they want to do so. The implications for contractors are clear if the labour supply shrinks and we struggle to retain or replace staff on existing client contracts. Thankfully the BCC is lobbying the Government to reconsider its plans, but it’s easy to imagine a scenario where the Government waits to see what actually happens before taking action. Of course one way to encourage more people to work as cleaners is to raise pay rates and in the intervening period before the new immigration rules come into force - ie the
remainder of 2020 - we have the opportunity, as contractors, to further advance our argument for paying staff at the very least the LWF rates of £10.75 and £9.30. Every day I hear about contractors who are quietly, and I may say bravely, digging their heels in when it comes both to tendering for new business and improving conditions on existing contracts. I even heard last month about a contractor who ‘let go’ a large client who just wasn’t prepared to countenance paying outsourced staff above the NLW. This highlights the type of discussion that might become necessary with existing clients all over the country as staff on pay rates at or around the NLW consider better offers in an environment of increasing demand for ‘unskilled’ staff in the cleaning, hospitality, care, and food production industries. It is important that we manage clients’ understanding about what exactly they receive in return for their cleaning budget. Top of the list is the reassurance of working with stable operators, experienced in motivating and managing large numbers of staff who work in difficult conditions and often at unsociable hours. Close behind is the use of technology to deliver training and compliance as part of a quality cleaning operation. And of course there is our immediate and unquestioning assistance when clients are faced with unplanned disruption, like the situation we are currently experiencing. Clients require cleaning to be a professional industry and it therefore needs to be treated as one. If the cost of such professionalism is difficult to swallow, the next year or two could go some way to exposing the alternative - unsustainable contracts that result in poor cleaning standards, lack of management support to resolve issues and no sense of the partnership approach required to deliver quality cleaning. Traditional products containing chlorine are generally not as effective on spores and require significantly longer contact times. Products containing AHP have been tested and shown to kill viruses such as norovirus in up to 30 seconds and the most persistent spores such as C. diff in one minute. Products containing AHP offer additional benefits that simplify day-to-day cleaning operations. soap is available in an extra mild version which is gentle on the frequently-washed hands of healthcare staff. A high-capacity hand towel roll will provide a hygienic drying solution while ensuring that the product will not run out during busy periods. The Tork PeakServe Continuous hand towel is an ideal solution because the unit holds up to 2100 towels at a time. This means it is highly unlikely to run out between maintenance checks. The dispenser also gives out a towel in just three seconds which makes the process quick and efficient. And to supplement hand hygiene, hand sanitiser dispensers such as the Tork Alcohol Hand Sanitiser will allow staff, visitors and patients to cleanse their hands quickly and efficiently. Superbugs remain a terrifying threat to our health. But it is reassuring to know that scientists around the globe are working on new technologies to diagnose and combat them. ECOBAT Battery Technologies (Ecobat
Ecobat Industrial highlights new developments
Industrial) has highlighted the products it planned to highlight on its stand during the now-postponed Interclean Amsterdam event. “One of the key challenges facing the industry is having the cleaning machines businesses rely on, ready and available whenever they need them and that means they need to be at a useable state of charge,” said Colin McCartney, the company’s
national accounts manager. “Charging times are therefore vital to tackle the issue, which is why as a power storage expert, Ecobat Industrial needs to provide businesses with the most suitable solutions and that means we have to offer a range of options. These cover four distinct categories: Sonnenschein, the cleaning market’s leading brand; Ecobat Rapid Charge, which demonstrates developing technology; Ecobat lithium-ion, addressing opportunity charging; and finally, Lucas 2-volt traction cells, for heavy duty applications.” McCartney continued: “Each of these products have their strong points and provide the optimum solution for a particular need, but looking at their charging time in isolation then Sonnenschein typically takes 10 to 12 hours, Rapid Charge lead crystal four to five, lithium can be charged when there’s the opportunity, whether that’s for 10 minutes or five hours and the 2-volt cell traction option takes eight to 12. In addition we’re focusing on our WiFi Charger range, which can be used in conjunction with any of these batteries. These multi-voltage chargers, which can operate between 12 and 48-volts, can be changed via the app, as opposed to having to manually change the dip switches to make alterations, which makes them an exceptionally convenient option. This means that when

traditional bristle brush with a clean and contemporary silicone waveform blade that’s antibacterial and waterrepellent, delivering a spotless clean right up to the edge. The silicone blade is designed to be swiped around the bowl, allowing the flexible blades to sweep across the surface and under the rim. Once finished, use one flush to allow the water to clear Loowy of any debris, then shake gently to remove excess water. The silicone blade does not clog like a traditional brush and the water-repellent coating means there’s no dripping or excess water run-off. WWW.ROBERT-SCOTT.CO.UK

City councils including Paris, Brussels, Krakow, and Vigo have relied on these solutions, while users as diverse as major campsites, wineries and large factories have chosen Tenax’s electrical machine to care for their own spaces. The machine, known as the Electra 01, has to provide the same level of autonomy as a diesel solution. Accordingly, Tenax turned to EnerSys as a reliable partner that could consistently supply the battery

EnerSys responded by performing a careful analysis, verification and elaboration of the new project. Based on this, EnerSys identified a solution based on a 48V 620Ah battery, which guaranteed coverage of an eight-hour shift. This guarantee was backed by an extended warranty period. Other factors besides the batteries themselves serve to maximise energy efficiency - EnerSys also provided its Life IQ high frequency chargers, together with its Wi-iQ battery monitoring device for checking each battery’s status. The data loggers communicate with the battery chargers and report data in a software package. This information is utilised in optimising charge profiles, extending battery life, reducing charging times, optimising quality, and increasing efficiency. HYGIENE chemicals specialist Christeyns has developed an innovative laundry product soon to be available for commercial laundries in the UK market. The
Cutting-edge product to protect hotel linen
hotel and leisure industry demands the highest levels of cleanliness and hygiene and generates millions of tonnes of laundry every week in the UK alone. Towels, bedding and other linen are subject to a variety of substances that can cause stains and discolouration. Some are more easily treatable that others. It is polyquaternium-7 contained in the protective film of many personal hygiene products that leads to textile staining. To tackle this problem, Christeyns has developed a special formula known
as Smart Shield which can be dosed as an additive in the pre-wash. Smart Shield neutralises the positive charge of the polyquaternium molecule thus preventing the attraction of the negatively charged dirt particles, which cause the staining.
