Avoiding the hazards of hazardous waste disposal It might surprise you to know that hazardous waste lurks in the most innocent of places. In a commercial environment, everyday items such as disinfectants, batteries, toner cartridges, electrical equipment, and aerosols are classed as hazardous waste and therefore require specialist disposal. Chris Edwards, technical manager at Grundon Waste Management, talks about the need to know the detail ahead of collection and how cleaning operatives and facilities teams can help. As a waste management company, we operate to an Environmental Permit, issued and regulated by the Environment Agency (EA) and that means abiding by its rules and regulations. Among these is detailed guidance about the disposal and recovery of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. It states that

18 JULY 2019

operators are required to implement systems that include a screening step or pre-acceptance procedure, involving the provision of information and representative samples of the waste. At Grundon, we have a formal, documented pre-acceptance procedure to address these regulations, helping ensure that both we and our customers

comply with our duty of care. The key points that we need to know in writing when undertaking a pre-acceptance of your hazardous wastes are: • The type of process producing the waste. • The specific process from which the waste derives. • The quantity of waste and how it is stored. • The European Waste Code (EWC) for the waste. • Chemical analysis of the waste (or representative sample) (individual constituents and, as a minimum, their percentage compositions). • The form the waste takes (solid, liquid, sludge etc). • The hazards associated with the waste. Having this information allows our technical department to assess all the likely hazards associated with the waste and which of our facilities is suitable and permitted to accept it. WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

SPONSORED FEATURE C&M

It is also necessary to enable us to screen out unsuitable wastes, identify any substances within the waste that may interact with other reagents or affect the treatment process or, indeed, which may be unaffected by the treatment process. Where our hazardous waste goes Hazardous waste is transported by our fleet of specialised vehicles, all of which are 100% compliant with ADR (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) transport regulations, and taken to our fully permitted Hazardous Waste Transfer Station at Ewelme in Oxfordshire. There, our highly-qualified team of chemists and hazardous waste management specialists are experts at determining the most suitable treatment and recovery process for each type of waste. Every effort is made to push materials up the waste hierarchy, ensuring that as many different products as possible are recovered, recycled, reprocessed or sent to our Energy from Waste facility for recovery. One example of our innovative technology has been the development of our world-leading AeroPak aerosol recycling plant, setting new standards for aerosol recycling. It uses best available technology (BAT) to safely recover every component of an aerosol, so metal from the canisters is sent for recycling; liquids such as hairspray, paint and deodorant are separated for recovery or recycling; and propellant gases are collected and used by Grundon to fuel in-house operations

and generate electricity. The AeroPak can also recover tins of paint, varnishes, inks, and small gas cylinders and has achieved a world first in being able to recover the specialist gases from asthma inhalers, enabling their recycling, along with the metal containers. How you can help Information is absolutely key to helping us do our job properly. The disposal of hazardous waste is a process which must be tightly regulated and having the required information enables us to deal with it correctly. So, when you give us an outline description of the waste to be collected and we come back with more questions

and more forms to fill in, please bear with us as we are, quite rightly, playing by the rules. If you are concerned or unsure of the contents or type of hazardous waste, then simply contact our team for advice. A practical solution We appreciate that in an office complex, the volumes of hazardous waste you come across are unlikely to be as high as (for example) in a manufacturing environment. Therefore, one very convenient solution is to introduce a Grundon Haz-Box, a specially-designed 55-litre lidded plastic box which will fit neatly into a cupboard or under a desk. It can be used to store mixed hazardous wastes safely, prior to a pre-organised collection at a convenient time. For information and advice on hazardous waste disposal, please email: technical@grundon.com or call 01491 834 340. Alternatively, for more information visit: www.grundon.com/ services/hazardous-waste/

What could go wrong If items classed as hazardous waste are not correctly segregated, here are just a few examples of what can happen: • If lithium batteries come into contact with liquid - perhaps in a mixed recycling bag or a waste bin - then the battery can ignite and cause a fire. • Old or unlabelled chemicals being disposed of without authority could leak and interact with each other and potentially cause toxic fumes. For example, when mixed, a bleach and an acidic cleaner could give off chlorine. • One leaking container of an unknown substance could render a whole consignment of recycling waste as ‘contaminated’, resulting in very high disposal costs. • Part used aerosol cans still contain butane, which creates a potential fire and explosion hazard when deposited in the general or recycling waste bins. Don’t forget, most waste is compacted or handled mechanically as part of its treatment process. This could easily burst an aerosol can, releasing all its contents.

CHEMICAL-FREE CLEANING

Chemical-free cleaning systems When it comes to chemical cleaning products, most of us don’t realise just how bad for the environment - and our health - they can be. With janitorial staff using products of this nature on a daily basis, as an industry we must be mindful of the increased health risks. With news that doctors are issuing a ‘traffic light’ health warning system on items such as chemical cleaning products, air fresheners and deodorants, the issue of indoor pollution and the effects it has on our health is becoming a real cause for concern. Steve Courtney, product specialist for Robert Scott’s Toucan Eco bio-cleaning system, shares his insight. AS evidence is emerging that indoor use of cleaning products can contribute to serious illnesses, scientists at The Royal College of Physicians have compiled a new study on indoor pollution. The study was put together in response to findings that volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, can not only damage health but when combined with external air pollution can create even more harmful particles. While previous warnings to avoid chemicalrich cleaning products have been criticised as premature, the scientist who led the study Professor Holgate - wants the research to result in ‘practical and useful steps that people can implement’. This includes the introduction of warning labels on harmful products, as well as red, orange and green labels to serve as a guide on the levels of harmful chemicals within a

CHEMICAL-FREE CLEANING

Cleaning - with or without chemicals? Thomas Stuecken, chairman of OspreyDeepclean Ltd, reports. A traditional view of cleaning generally depicts the use of some type of chemical together with some labour intensive scrubbing. Disinfectants and cleaning fluids are still the ‘go to’ tool for many to kill germs and achieve the visible high standards of cleanliness that give the illusion of a thoroughly cleaned surface. But just how well do these products clean and, when used continuously, what damage do they cause to the surfaces they are used on? The alternative cleaning without chemicals - is still a relatively new, albeit popular, concept. However, with some online reports claiming that chemical free cleaning is a marketing term rather than a technical term, can a high standard of sanitation really be achieved without? Just last year an NHS Trust in the UK was criticised by the Quality Care Commission (QCC)

clothing (masks, gloves and goggles) are not supplied and used where appropriate. So what is the alternative? To be truly chemical free would be cleaning with just water. Water alone cannot compete with the hygiene standards achieve by chemicals. But when super-heated to approximately 180°C, cold clean tap water is converted from its liquid state to a gas or ‘dry steam’, powerful enough to clean, sanitise, de-grease, remove allergens and pathogens, and be used as a decontamination tool. When used in conjunction with an integrated vacuum, surfaces are also left dry and ready for immediate reuse. Dry steam is not limited to where it can be used and can (and does) clean virtually anything and in any environment, even those that are considered a ‘dry environment’ such as bakery and food production lines. There is no scope for microbial resistance with dry steam as the only component is water and it is incredibly environmentally friendly. One litre of water converts to almost 1600 litres of dry steam 26 JULY 2019

Jangro sharpens up its training offering

FOR operatives working in areas where there are sharps (needles and other objects used to puncture the skin), cleaning can be extra hazardous. With the correct management, the risk of accidents can be reduced. That’s why Jangro has expanded its training programme, LMS (Learning Management Solution) with a new module dedicated to Sharps Handling. The course takes only 30 minutes to complete, and by the end of it, operatives should be able to: • Understand the nature and the scope of a workplace hazard. • Identify various risks caused by needle-stick and sharps injuries. • Understand the five-step process of risk management.

• Identify the roles and responsibilities involved with managing sharps waste. • List personal protective equipment (PPE) and other tools, and understand why they are important. WWW.JANGROLMS.NET

By simply boiling and bleaching to clean and refresh, she remarkably extended the life of the same pack of cloths for over 30 years. Sooner or later, however, all good things must come to an end. Upon realisation that Margaret Hamlin was down to her last cloth, she needed to find a solution. Fortunately
