EDITOR’S LETTER C&M

The best laid plans…

Despite the best intentions and a huge amount of effort by the organisers to deliver the Manchester Cleaning Show as planned on 14 and 15 October 2020 at Manchester’s Event City, recent government announcements surrounding tighter COVID-19 restrictions has resulted in the postponement of the physical show, replaced instead by a virtual, online event. A spokesperson for the organiser said: “This has been a saddening decision for everyone working on the Manchester Cleaning Show, but we have unanimously agreed that the best course of action is to reschedule the event. The latest government rules regarding social gatherings, and the ongoing local lockdown in the Greater Manchester area, has forced us to re-evaluate our plans for the event. We have always put the health and safety of our exhibitors and visitors first, and will continue to do so. We have been, and remain, steadfast in our commitment to stage a much-needed physical exhibition and conference for the industry. We hope that the move to September 2021 will see us able to operate freely without social distancing restrictions, and ensures that we do not interfere or clash with other planned industry events.” This means that the first physical event – the first opportunity for our industry to gather together – will come in March at The Cleaning Show in London: 16-18 March 2021 at ExCel. But in the meantime there is so much to discuss, and this has led to the staging of the virtual event on 14-15 October 2020. The opportunities that this virtual event offers – particularly as it is being hosted on a really innovative platform – will make it unmissable for cleaning industry professionals. There are no apps to download, you can view everything on a device of your choice, and it will deliver exciting content and business solutions for visitors and a vital commercial

opportunity for exhibitors. To register for your virtual pass, please visit: www.cleaningshow.co.uk/manchester. Paul Thrupp, chairman of the British Cleaning Council, said: “I am asking everyone in the cleaning and hygiene sector to support the virtual conference and exhibition which is being run instead of this year’s Manchester Cleaning Show. This is an event for all of us in the industry and it will have so much to offer…it should be unmissable for exhibitors and for anyone connected in any way to the cleaning industry. It will showcase the vital role our sector has played in tackling Coronavirus and highlight how the industry can continue to support the economy to reopen safely. This is a chance to celebrate that contribution and say thanks to the dedicated and brave operatives who were at the heart of it. There are some big names taking part, including national and international exhibitors and a fantastic, free selection of recorded talks.” So it’s not what we had all hoped for, but the virtual event will provide a valuable platform through which we can meet, learn, cooperate, and develop new business opportunities. I look forward to seeing you there, and to getting together – face to face – very soon. I wish you a happy, clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG C&M

The long wait for the ‘new normal’ Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports. PRIOR to the government’s revised guidelines last month that employees should now work from home where possible, a recent quote in the FT had already summarised the position of many employers. Adam Marshall, head of the British Chambers of Commerce, commented: “The main issue is that businesses and their employees have negotiated a balance that works for them, and it seems unlikely that the government telling people to return to offices will make much difference on its own.” The FT went on to confirm that: “Many CBI members are not planning a mass return of their employees to the workplace until next year, and that doesn’t necessarily mean January.” In other words, the return to work was already set to remain slow, with London still behind the rest of the UK. Schools going back made some difference, but that’s all we could really say. Employees’ personal safety worries, particularly where commuting by public transport is concerned, had already won the battle of hearts and minds. What does this mean for us contractors? Well, at DOC we had hoped that the end of furlough would signify the return of office workers, but we now realise this isn’t going to happen. With no certainty from clients as to when they might be returning staff to their buildings, both the Chancellor’s £1000 staff retention bonus and the new Jobs Support Scheme are becoming increasingly irrelevant. Along with many other contractors, we are in the

unenviable position of potentially making staff redundant, rather than keep them on the books with no immediate prospect of work. Does this represent a serious dent in the long-term prospects of contract cleaning? It’s hard to say at this stage. Contractors who rely primarily on daily office cleaning will clearly suffer a short-term reduction in turnover. Even when buildings reopen, something tells me that if a client reduces its average staffing complement to well below its current number, despite occupying the same space as now, then they will look for savings. Our job will be to propose alternative cleaning regimes that help them discharge their duty of care to their own staff, whilst aiming to rearrange and maintain our own staffing levels until such time as the whole situation settles down sometime next year. This will support clients’ efforts to bring staff back to the office in whatever numbers and at whatever frequency is appropriate to their future needs, rather than create the impression that cleaning and hygiene have been deprioritised. In this respect, there is one development I would very much like to see take place. Well before COVID, the big management consulting companies (PWC, Ernst & Young, etc.) had already adapted their cleaning requirements to include a very heavy complement of daytime cleaning staff who constantly clean desks, meeting rooms and hygiene facilities. Combined with

room and desk booking software, this was supporting the highly fluid nature of staff using the building. This is a model of how cleaning in the corporate office sector could develop and I encourage these firms to promote facilities management, cleaning in particular, as part of their own consultancy activity to large corporates. It would be an excellent way to spread cleaning best practice in the post-COVID world. Of course, there’s still one question to be answered. Will working from home actually represent a long-term solution for office-based organisations? Many are talking up a hybrid model, a ‘collaboration hub’ where offices are maintained for those who want the face-to-face contact and where meetings, motivational sessions and training can be delivered. A not insignificant number are also questioning whether the creativity and dynamism required to move organisations forward can be achieved with a model where the constant interaction between staff is missing. All in all, I am optimistic that if and when a vaccine is available, we will see a more balanced debate, with cleaning and hygiene as an important factor in the drive to reassure staff that their workplace is safe. SPECIAL REPORT: COVID-19

COVID-19: Cleaning remains a frontline service Neil Nixon reports. Following on from the features in the previous five issues of C&M looking at the frontline role the cleaning sector continues to play in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, I am migrating any news or new product information online to allow for the more immediate dissemination of any updates. Please take a look at www.cleaningmag.com – content is changing on a daily basis. I will continue to utilise the pages of C&M to focus on cleaning during the pandemic in detail and, as with this month’s column, to seek advice on best practice from recognised industry experts, and to learn from the experience of others.

WHY CLEANING MUST NOW BE EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY With cleaning and hygiene having never been so important, and with businesses still getting back on their feet, Kimberly-Clark Professional has partnered with the UK’s leading training body - the British Institute of Cleaning Science - to bring best practice and leading expertise to facilities managers. and ensure the correct product is used for the surface they are cleaning. •T o use systematic overlapping wiping actions so that all the surface area is efficiently and effectively cleaned. •T o change the wipe when all surfaces have been used, or it has been contaminated to prevent spreading infection. •T o clean from the cleanest areas to the dirtiest to minimise cross-contamination. BICSs explains that best practice is to apply the cleaning product from dirty to clean areas to allow the greatest contact time to kill bacteria. The areas are then cleaned from those least contaminated to those more heavily so, as shown in Diagram 1. The disinfectant would be applied from point 9 to point 1, providing the recommended contact time. The operative then commences cleaning from the least contaminated area, point 1, working to the toilet cubicle area with the toilet itself being the final item to be cleaned. Thermo-fogging: protection against COVID-19 Craig Mawlam, chairman of Ionic Systems, reports. 2020, could it get any worse? Heck yeah and 2021 may be no better if it does. Of course, I’m referring to the Coronavirus, aka COVID-19, and the reason I’m saying this is because I believe we are currently in the eye of the storm, a period of calm so to speak. Currently across Europe infections are increasing yet we find comfort in the fact that fatalities are not. One reason maybe that the summer sun has boosted our vitamin D and fortified our immune systems, but winter is coming, bringing shorter daylight hours and, of course, the flu season that takes advantage of our seasonally depressed immune systems (as does COVID). The last thing we need is a bad winter and the feared second wave could be severe enough to force us into a further national lockdown - all

The process has, in the last 20 years, been extended to the large-scale use of biocides, or disinfectants for use on livestock farms, which due to their size, require substantial amounts of effective disinfectants to control diseasecausing organisms and viruses. As long as the fogging process follows an effective manual cleaning process on all surfaces which are required to be disinfected, the process provides a quick and easy way to terminally disinfect.

Vanoquat is a disinfectant formulation developed originally for the food processing market for the final stage cleaning and disinfection of open plant (large scale) meat and slaughterhouse applications as well as with livestock production. It can be used effectively through a thermal fogging machine. With the outbreak of COVID-19, Evans Vanodine - the manufacturer - submitted Vanoquat to an EN 14476 test which covers effectiveness against human Coronavirus and a number of other organisms and Vanoquat passed at 1:25 dilution. The formulation includes an active material, globally known and respected for its abilities in pathogen control, a wetting agent to enable the solution to cover all surfaces equally and a softening system to remove the interference from hard water compounds and mineral salts.

HEALTHCARE & HOSPITAL HYGIENE

Hand hygiene in healthcare: the new challenges FOLLOWING the end of lockdown, A&E departments are filling up again, out-patient appointments are resuming and hospital visitors are gradually being welcomed back. So how can hospitals ensure that patients and visitors - as well as staff - keep their hands clean at all times? At the start of 2020 there was a significant change to the UK hospital landscape. Anyone venturing inside a healthcare facility at the height of the pandemic would have found it to be virtually unrecognisable. Clinics and specialist units fell empty as medical staff from all branches of the profession were reassigned to deal with the more immediate COVID-19 crisis. Hundreds of wards were reconfigured to cater for the influx of coronavirus victims while routine operations were put on hold. Meanwhile, activity in A&E departments ground

in an exclusive partnership with Hooper Services Ltd. Using UV technology to destroy micro-organisms on a cellular level, the Ecoray system can destroy up to 97% of bacteria, mould or viruses without the use of a chemical. The system sits at the back of the machine after the squeegee and turns on automatically when the machine is in use, so there is no need for any training or maintenance. The system has been independently tested by one of Italy’s top oncology institutes, the CRO National Cancer Institute near Venice, which showed that

in the areas tested just using water, a significant reduction of between 96.5% and 100% of micro-organisms was realised. As the testing at the CRO suggests, maintenance of floor areas can be completed in just one pass with the Ecoray system mounted, saving time, money, chemicals and maintaining infection control standards.
