Who will clear up after Brexit? I am writing this on 2 September 2019, and it is no clearer whether we will exit Europe on 31 October with or without a deal. One thing is for sure - there will be a great deal of clear up as over two and a half years of indecision has led to lack of investment, reduction in training and has left industry at large vulnerable. Some of the greatest British names have gone to foreign investors due to uncertainty in the home market and, to some extent, has caused the weakness of the pound against other major trading currencies. As the fortunes of other countries have improved, for example Poland, many service industry workers have taken the opportunity to return to their country of origin as there is still huge uncertainty regarding the freedom of movement. This is against a
backdrop of one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United Kingdom for many years. Our service industries are reliant on foreign labour and are not, in general, attractive to people leaving college. Within the cleaning industry there are no requirements under which operatives are recruited against prescribed criteria - this is both a blessing and a curse. The low entry level allows employment for all with no set skills requirement, and the potential for a shortage of any labour is clear for all to see. What should we do? Or more importantly, what should we have been doing? In the late 70s/early 80s, I vividly remember posting flyers through people’s front doors to encourage them to apply for vacancies we could not fill. Mechanisation and robotics can increase
productivity, but we will always need cleaning operators/cleaning operatives. Who will undertake these roles in a postBrexit economy? Perhaps it is time that we reviewed why we incarcerate individuals who are not a threat to society? Only today it is being reported on the BBC news that a young offenders institution locks teenagers up for 23.5 hours a day on occasion – how can this integrate them back into society? There are hundreds if not thousands of jobs that are not filled that would not put the public at risk, but that could benefit society. Also, individuals working in society for the benefit of society do not have to be reintroduced to society. Not every offender is a suitable candidate for such roles but, as with all jobs, a rigorous risk assessment and a review of the abilities of the individual may help us to provide a suitable workforce for the future. Waste expertise when you need it most When disaster strikes in the shape of a chemical spillage, fire or flood, having the right team in place to handle the aftermath will be critical to business continuity. While the emergency services will most likely deal with the immediate problem, specialist clean-up expertise is usually needed in order to get an operation back up-and-running as soon as possible. Andy Stratton, from Grundon Waste Management’s Industrial Services team, says taking time to plan ahead is vital. Demand for our services ranges from handling an accidental spillage of acid in a laboratory to post fire clean-ups in factories where getting back on track is essential to production. Most recently, we’ve been asked to pump out sewerage from an aircraft’s underfloor cargo bay, handle the safe disposal of fly-tipped asbestos, used our high-pressure water jetting service to clean a fuel spillage, and advised organisations on the need for spill kits to help provide a front-line defence in case of accidents. Such requests are all in a day’s work for our team, which has more than 40 years’ experience in providing specialist decontamination, environmental cleaning and industrial services. Inevitably, disaster-led activities demand speedy action, which is why we offer an emergency response service with advice from an expert over the phone to help mitigate the 18 OCTOBER 2019
immediate problem, followed by onsite attendance, clean-up and disposal. However, whether it is an accident, incident or a planned event, such as a relocation of facilities, the key to managing the activity successfully is good planning.
This is where the relationship between cleaning contractors and facilities management teams with disaster and recovery experts, such as ourselves, pays dividends. For example, a simple planning meeting can help establish issues

such as: • Undertaking a formal risk assessment. • Identifying which chemicals and other hazardous wastes are present on-site. • Ensuring easy access to relevant areas and/or storage cupboards. • Making sure all containers and/ or hazardous waste is located and clearly identified. • Understanding if existing emergency procedures are in place. Putting the basics such as this information in place early provides both peace of mind and secures valuable time in the event of disaster. Because our Industrial Services team works closely alongside Grundon’s inhouse hazardous waste technical team, we have access to some of the best chemists and scientists in the sector. Over and above anything else, it means that the service we provide isn’t just about cleaning up after an incident, it’s about managing the safe and compliant disposal of the waste too something that is very important given today’s emphasis on environmental responsibility and liability. And if there are questions we don’t know the answers to, then we can guarantee that there will be at least three or four experts sitting right across the table from us who can advise and help on the problem – that’s where we add real value. Because our teams are so knowledgeable, one of our most

frequent roles is incident clean up, as happened recently at the University of Surrey in Guildford, where a fire caused damage to laboratory equipment and instrumentation in a research block. Nicola Walker, health and safety office (hazardous materials) at the University of Surrey, said: “After the fire, a full strip-out in the affected areas was required. For example, tiles and pipes in the ceiling had been damaged, as well as laboratory equipment and instrumentation area itself. Grundon had an amazing project manager in Steve Bell who ran the job on a daily basis and was very methodical in his approach. There were weekly progress meetings and communications were excellent.”
Although the immediate problem was quickly brought under control, the university turned to us to help with the clean-up and within two hours we were on site to survey the damage and take stock of what needed to be done. Detailed plans were drawn up for the safe disposal of all fire-related waste including chemicals, melted fluorescent tubes and floor and ceiling tiles, damaged plasterboard, and other items that had been contaminated. We project-managed specialist subcontractors and used our own mercury vacuum cleaner, which can detect even the tiniest traces of mercury, to allay any fears that there may have been any mercury spillages - for example, from the melted fluorescent tubes. No mercury was found at the site. With the aim of getting the area to the stage where it was ready for refitting and refurbishment, we worked closely with the university’s maintenance and estates team in order to manage the on-site challenges, which included undertaking the clean-up while also allowing access for students and staff to other parts of the block. After an eight-week clean-up programme the building was given the all clear for refurbishment work to begin. good hand hygiene practices among visitors and patients? In summer 2019, a Scottish newspaper carried out an investigation into the availability of hand sanitiser dispensers at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, which was facing a government inquiry following the deaths of two patients from an infection linked to pigeon droppings. Reporters from the Glasgow Evening Times checked on supplies of hand gel in the hospital’s 2608 dispensers in 96 separate tests. And they discovered that on every occasion, at least a third of the dispensers were either empty or broken. Two wards had no hand gel provision whatsoever on each of the three days on which the tests were carried out. The first ward was occupied by patients suffering from respiratory illnesses while the second ward treated people with communicable diseases - which made hand hygiene provision particularly important. Using technology to enhance floor cleaning standards IT’S no secret that maintaining excellent cleaning standards within the healthcare sector is of utmost importance and presents many challenges, but the use of technology within floor cleaning machines can enhance standards and help overcome some of these issues. The adoption of robotic floor cleaning within healthcare environments has been slow to develop, but we are beginning to see real interest in this area, especially due to the reduction in available labour, resulting in the need to maximise all cleaning methods available. Using a robotic scrubber dryer such as the ICE Robo 3 to clean the main areas of a hospital or healthcare facility means that the cleaning Often in healthcare facilities the sheer

Targeting better infection prevention INFECTION prevention teams are seeking better outcomes by combining tried and tested techniques with innovations and new processes. Good hand hygiene remains at the heart of infection prevention because, studies suggest, around 80% of infections are spread by touch. This link is central to the World Health Organisation’s ‘Five moments of hand hygiene’ that have helped reduce infection rates in healthcare settings. These recommend healthcare workers wash their hands before touching patients, before clean/ aseptic procedures, after body fluid exposure, after touching patients, and after touching patient surroundings. Despite progress, studies suggest between 20 and 40% of healthcare associated infections arise when a healthcare worker passes pathogens from one patient to the next. There is a growing realisation that even with high levels of compliance, accepted methodologies can be improved. Rigorous daily cleaning of all surfaces, especially those likely to be touched by patients or staff, is essential. But some surfaces are more likely than others to be

non-clinical staff, and visitors.
This can be distilled into five critical points:
The approach is to clean hands and disinfect surfaces before and after each of these critical moments. However, these processes must be simple and accessible so that they can be completed effectively whenever needed. They must also be acceptable to healthcare workers and visitors. For example, products should be non-hazardous and non-irritating. Processes must be fast because anything that adds time or burden is less likely to be done. Diversey offers a complete range of hand hygiene products for healthcare. These include soaps, sanitisers and creams offering good levels of infection prevention. Whatever products are used, it is important they are available whenever needed. That means providing a suitable product at points of use, checking bottles or dispensers regularly and topping up as necessary. Innovative

It’s a great opportunity for us to appreciate the great work our cleaning teams do to improve our surroundings. On this day we encourage everyone to take the time just to say hi to their cleaning staff and thank them for making a difference.
“
Simon Keeping, Managing Director of Kärcher UK & Ireland.
There is virtually no limit to the creativity of the companies who take part in Thank Your Cleaner Day™. From joint breakfasts, to barbecues or cakes, the feedback from building service contractors, their employees and customers is very positive, with many using this day as the foundation to build reward, recognition and staff development programmes. Originating in New Zealand in 2015, Thank Your Cleaner Day™ is a global initiative which encourages businesses to recognise the hard work of these often-invisible cleaning heroes, to show them they are valued and appreciated. Why not join the thousands of companies that are cleaned and maintained by cleaning contractors and say thank you to those who look after your premises?
Cleaning is one of the most important industries in the world yet is often undervalued by those who benefit from the service. Everyday tens of thousands of skilled, hardworking cleaning staff work around the clock to ensure your working and living environments are kept clean, safe and hygienic, ready to go for the next business day. Now in its fifth year, the Thank Your Cleaner Day™ campaign provides businesses with the platform to bring cleaning staff into the spotlight, so that their hard work and dedication in keeping our premises clean can be recognised, reminding everyone of the positive impact they have. On 16th October 2019 more than 20 countries across the globe will join the Thank Your Cleaner Day™ campaign, from Australia to the Dominican Republic, to the USA and the United Kingdom. To celebrate this key date, Kärcher encourages the global cleaning industry to support and raise awareness for the important cleaning work many overlook.
This year Kärcher is partnering with the Cleaning and Support Services Association and the British Cleaning Council, along with cleaning contractors across the UK to spread the word and encourage universal recognition on this day.
“
Workers in the cleaning sector provide a vital service to the economy, ensuring that our workplaces, schools, hospitals, transport and public spaces are clean, tidy and safe. So we at the BCC are delighted to support this fantastic campaign which encourages people to recognise the hard work of cleaners and the massive contribution they make.
You can show your appreciation for cleaning staff in so many ways on 16th October for Thank Your Cleaner Day™
Businesses all over the UK can also show recognition for their cleaning teams by nominating them for the Kärcher ‘Makes A Difference Award’. Nominations can be submitted via the Kärcher website at www.karcher.co.uk/TYCD, with the winning team being announced on Thank Your Cleaner Day™ when they will also receive £1,000 of experience day vouchers to spend as a team.

“
By creating a special day to celebrate the work our cleaners do, we’re focussing attention on the value they bring to improving the quality of our work and leisure environments. These unsung heroes, often working unsociable hours, help improve our productivity at work and enhance our enjoyment during downtime.

Digital Cleaning Plans make life easier for the cleaning operative while empowering facility managers with better reporting and enhanced control. “Digital Cleaning Plans are a simple solution to a major headache for cleaning managers: how to keep track of what needs to be done and ensure that all tasks are completed without anything being overlooked,” said
Essity UK sales director, Nathan Titheridge. “Many cleaning companies currently use paper plans and reports to map out their cleaning rounds. We are helping them move from an analogue world to the digital age and make their operations much more efficient because tasks and reports will be logged immediately and all monitoring will be instant.” WWW.TORK.CO.UK
ACCORDING to the Health and Safety Executive UK, 90% of trips and slips happen when floors are wet, with the cost of workplace self-reported injuries equating to £5.2 billion in the year 2016/17 alone. It is a common misconception that slip injuries just happen and that little can be done about it, however years of experience now shows that slip prevention can be managed effectively and can cut injuries by 50% or more. A spillage the size of a 50p can spread up to 2m2 when mopped and can take up to seven minutes to completely dry, according to

90% of injuries involved in using high pressure water blasters are generated by hose or gun failure. Australian Pump’s experience indicates that many pressure cleaner operators, professional and even semi-professional,

continue to use high pressure guns which are leaking, worn or broken. “Safety alerts from the industry, both here and abroad, are quite consistent,” said Aussie Pumps operations manager, Hamish Lorenz. “We see operators using hoses that are years old, often badly
abraded with the wire showing through the rubber sheath. We notice hose to gun couplings that are worn and potentially dangerous.” The new Australian and New Zealand safety standards for pressure cleaners cover a series of rules about the safe use of pressure cleaners. They include instructions for operators to continually check accessories for leaks or wear and to replace as required before their use by date. To counteract the use of unsafe guns, Aussie Pumps has launched a ‘Pro Gun’ programme. The company has paired 5800 psi rated guns with either 900 or 1200mm stainless steel lances and nozzles, designed to fit most professional cleaning applications. Through a massive build programme, it has been able to pull costs down and bring prices down substantially. “Aussie’s gun and hose programmes are a breakthrough for the industry, pulling prices down substantially to encourage users to replace bad hoses or guns promptly,” continued Lorenz. “Persisting to use worn and leaking accessories is dangerous.” Free copies of Aussies Pro Operator Safety Guide are available online: WWW.AUSSIEPUMPS.COM.AU 34 OCTOBER 2019

“THERE is a growing impetus behind the adoption of lead crystal batteries in the cleaning sector,” said Colin McCartney, national accounts manager for the industrial division of Ecobat Battery Technologies (Ecobat Industrial). “This is because businesses are beginning to see the real-world benefits they bring in terms of both durability and cost-effectiveness, particularly against the established players in the market.” McCartney continued: “On face value, lithium-ion has a lot to offer the industry but when considering all the factors, like the requirements of the

equipment, the timeframes for both charge opportunity and overall lifespan, as well as the cost, they are not necessarily the best solution. This realisation as led many to look again at uprated lead-acid products as a possible alternative, with thin plate pure lead gaining a particular foothold. However, there is another option, which more closely reflects the positives of lithium-ion in terms of durability and recharge speed, without the negatives of price and the ecological concerns. “Having a historical presence in the market for many years and numerous long-term relationships with industry professionals, we (EBT) have a proven track record that shows we have the knowledge and experience to select products that best suit their requirements and without question, the lead crystal option provides an extremely compelling proposition for multiple applications in the cleaning sector.” For further details, please visit: WWW.ECOBATINDUSTRIAL.TECH
THE control of unwanted weeds and vegetation is a perennial issue for municipalities, landscapers and green space contractors. Since 2011 Weedingtech Ltd has been developing a range of machines that not only tackles this issue,

but carries it out without the use of harmful herbicides. Named the Foamstream Municipal Series, the machines use a patented low-pressure process which combines hot water and a biodegradable foam. The foam is made from natural plant oils and sugars making it safe for use around people, animals and delicate environments. Within the Foamstream Municipal range is the company’s highest performance product, the Foamstream M1200. The Foamstream M1200 is self-contained and powered by a Hatz 1B30 diesel engine in EU and US/ Canada EPA specifications.

Simplification and recognisability are the two keywords at the root of this rebranding. A font with simple lines was used together with a yellow element – a lightning bolt – symbolising strength and speed, two qualities that reflect Lavorwash’s current objective: to become stronger and more innovative in the world of domestic and professional cleaning.
