EDITOR’S LETTER C&M
A show of strength
During a recent board meeting of British Cleaning Council Exhibitions Ltd, board members unanimously agreed that the Manchester Cleaning Show should be held as planned – at Event City in Manchester on 14 and 15 October 2020. A joint statement issued by the board said: “The Manchester Cleaning Show is an important milestone for the cleaning and hygiene sector. As an industry we have had a vital role to play in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry has demonstrated resilience, adaptability and innovation, and it’s now really important that we come together to demonstrate a show of strength - not only to showcase the solutions that can help keep facilities safe well into the future, but to demonstrate to the wider business community that business can be done in a safe and productive way by following enhanced hygiene measures.” The Manchester Cleaning Show represents the first opportunity that our industry has had to meet in person for many months, and the organisers are creating a productive and supportive environment alongside conference content that will address the future of the industry and discuss many of the challenges facing businesses right now. Attendees will discover plenty of products that can enhance their cleaning regimes. And we can talk. Not over a video call, not via email, but sit down and really talk. To create the right environment for us all to meet, the Manchester Cleaning Show team is working tirelessly with exhibitors and those planning to visit to ensure their experience will be both really productive and safe. The team is confident a safe event can be staged by following a strict cleaning regime,
enhancing hygiene measures and enforcing a common-sense approach to social distancing. If, like me, you are suffering extreme ‘online fatigue’, the opportunity to meet face to face with friends, colleagues and prospects can’t come soon enough. It is incumbent upon us as a sector to practice what we preach, proving that we can create safe environments in which to travel, work and get together. The BCCE board – which includes John Oliver as its chairman; Paul Thrupp, chairman of BCC; Stan Aktins, group CEO of BICSc; Deborah Bland, global marketing manager, BSC and retail, at Diversey; Darren Marston, executive chairman of Industrial Cleaning Equipment Ltd; and representatives from Quartz Business Media – all encourage you to attend. The Manchester and London Cleaning Shows are the British Cleaning Council’s main source of revenue – revenue it uses to invest in projects across all its member organisations. Your support is therefore critical for the future development of the sector. I look forward to seeing you on 14-15 October, but in the meantime I wish you a happy, clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

COVID-19: Cleaning sector’s role remains critical Neil Nixon reports. Following on from the features in the previous four issues of C&M looking at the critical role the cleaning sector is playing in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, I am continuing to migrate any news or new product information online to allow for the immediate dissemination of any updates. Please take a look at www.cleaningmag.com – content is changing on a daily basis. I will, therefore, continue to utilise the pages of C&M to look at certain aspects of cleaning during and after the pandemic in detail and, as with this month’s column, to seek advice on best practice from recognised industry experts, and to learn from the experience of others.

The process is effective in measuring the cleanliness of surfaces, however, the leadership team of Incentive QAS has issued a warning to the sector and for clients to understand the science behind the process. Jamie Wright continued: “We have heard of companies using ATP testing to show that an area is sanitised weeks after a ‘fogging’ has been completed, but there’s a difference between cleaning an area and sanitising it. ATP testing does not and cannot detect viruses directly, only organic matter where a virus may have lived. An ATP test with a low reading that takes place weeks after a fogging does not prove the surface is still sanitised, it merely proves the regular cleaners are doing their job. Clarity is key for us, particularly during a pandemic.” Jamie Wright, managing director of Incentive QAS 18 SEPTEMBER 2020

However, there is also potential for alternative approaches that don’t involve chemicals. For instance, heating a contaminated surface can have a significant impact on its viral load, and electrostatic cleaning is gaining a lot of attention too.” Dr Eileen Buttimer continued: “Current studies on viral survival are generating a wealth of data that is waiting to be harnessed by product developers. PRESSURE WASHING, GRAFFITI REMOVAL & STREET CLEANING
Street art or crime? Cleaning-up graffiti Graffiti clean-up costs local authorities and private companies millions every year. Karen Nicolson, head of field marketing at Nilfisk UK, offers her top tips for chemical-free pressure washer cleaning. STREET art is a controversial subject - some people consider it art and an important part of culture whilst for others it is a sign of vandalism and crime. London is one of the largest locations for collectable street art in the world. The famous anonymous street artist, Banksy, has many great pieces in London, some of which have transformed the value of the property they are featured on. Technically, however, on private property it is vandalism which costs local authorities and private companies millions to clean up. The London Underground alone spends more than £10 million a year on graffiti removal. Fuelled by social media Instagram in particular is responsible for fueling a huge increase in graffiti crime. The posting of a new ‘tag’ on social channels, #graffiti, can lead to instant fame amongst the artist community and the public alike. The more spectacular the design, the more difficult the location, the greater the kudos. Many aspire to follow in Banksy’s footsteps but finding permissible sites is harder than ever. With over 65% of the UK population now on some form of social media platform, it is clear the problem is not going away. The cost burden Clean-up costs are high and with local

lance, gradually increasing the pressure. Keep a constant watch for damage to the surface area and switch up the nozzle if required. Brick and masonry has a tendency to hold deep rooted paint so you may need a turbo nozzle. Make sure you have a range of quality nozzles at your disposal - Nilfisk has a long reach lance that projects a concentrated stream of water up to 2 to 3 meters from the nozzle. Generally, 1500 to 2000 psi will get the job done – again, start with low pressure and cold water then increased pressure before hot water is used. This makes good sense from a cost perspective and chemicals can then be used as a last resort. Injector blasting offers the following advantages: easy transport and short set-up times; high adaptability; versatile; environmentally friendly; low operating and investment costs; and safe handling. In order to be able to precisely determine costs and area performance, it is always advisable to carry out a test clean on-site. High-pressure cleaning High-pressure cleaners are a popular choice. The type and level of dirt will dictate whether cold or hot water machines are used. There is a trend towards using hot water machines, as the higher temperature makes greasy and oily dirt easier to remove, as well as lighter graffiti. Additional benefits of the hot water machines are a reduced cleaning time of up to 40% and that less cleaning agent is required, sometimes even none at all. Drying times are also reduced so that next steps can get underway more quickly. Water flow, too, is an important factor when selecting a machine as it is crucial for impact pressure, which generates the cleaning action and aids the removal of the dislodged dirt. NORTHWOOD Hygiene Products is increasing its hand towel capacity by over 40%, following a significant investment in new equipment. In order to meet the rapidly growing demand for folded hand towels, Northwood is installing three new machines at its Oldham converting plant, with a combined capacity of over 12,000 tonnes per year, which will run alongside the existing two. The investment will allow Northwood not only to increase its capacity, but also to reduce the amount of factored goods imported from outside the
