Excellerate Services - rebrand of LCC and Templewood draws on international strength RECENTLY merged cleaning and FM specialists, LCC and Templewood, are rebranding as Excellerate Services. Parent company, Excellerate Services is well-established as a property solutions company across sub-Saharan Africa and now brings its business processes to the UK. During 2018 LCC Support Services combined with cleaning and security specialist, Templewood Services - already part of the Excellerate group. All three companies have a shared focus on innovation and continuous improvement to ensure quality client care. The group’s strength also comes from its scale and financial stability, as well as its ongoing investment in talent. In the immediate future the market will see the Excellerate Services brand rolled out across all aspects of the LCC and Templewood Services business including websites, social media platforms, staff uniforms, and signage. As well as having access to a broader combination of specialist property solutions, existing and new clients will benefit from Excellerate’s technology platforms. Asking the right questions is key to recycling success In last month’s Clear Impressions column, Owen George,, group development and innovation manager from Grundon Waste Management, looked at the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, outlining the role that cleaning companies and facilities managers can play in helping to achieve the circular economy. Following on from that, he examines the importance of making the ‘right’ decisions in consultation with industry experts who understand the rights and wrongs of different recycling options. The tide is beginning to turn as more and more of us think about swapping single use plastic bottles and throwaway cups for reusable alternatives. There’s no doubt public opinion has been helping to shape the views of high street

18 MARCH 2019

coffee shops to engage with new ways of recycling, while some forward-thinking companies are now re-introducing more traditional china plates and ‘proper’ knives and forks to their company canteens.

Elsewhere, businesses are finally beginning to adopt alternative packaging solutions and ‘take-back’ options, helping to reduce the vast amount of cardboard and plastic waste which often wraps around the smallest of objects being delivered. Change and choice are good - but that presumes those changes are introduced with the knowledge that they will actually fulfil the requirements of being more environmentally-friendly. This is where cleaning companies and facilities managers can both make a difference. By helping to bring together their customers who want to make changes with the industry experts who can advise on the best way forward, they can help avoid potentially expensive mistakes. To explain what I mean, take a look at these two examples. WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

Recently, one worldwide drinks manufacturer announced it had seen a big rise in the distribution of glass bottles rather than plastic ones. You might think this would be a cause for celebration, but instead the manufacturer warned that because glass is heavier, it has a much larger carbon footprint due to transport. And, by the way, its plastic bottles (and cans) were all recyclable anyway. Secondly, we know of one organisation which wanted to introduce single-use compostable food packaging, the idea being that this could be safely disposed of, along with any food remains, at an anaerobic digestion facility. Unfortunately, the closest anaerobic digestion plant that could handle this type of packaging turned out to be much further away than they had thought - meaning the food waste now had to travel a greater distance, thereby adding to the carbon footprint. You can see how challenging this can be for companies wanting to make the right decision. By talking to experts like ourselves, who will undertake a detailed waste audit to examine both the types of waste and the potential options available, we can all make a difference. Recently, with our help, one of our customers, a five-star hotel complex with restaurants, an award-winning spa, championship golf course, and a host of luxury meeting and event spaces, made a number of changes. Some were practical improvements,

C&M

such as installing more recycling bins, installing a new metal skip, and expanding the size of the cardboard storage area to help them increase their recycling rebate. Other changes were more wide-ranging and came about as a result of raising the profile of environmental issues. For example, replacing plastic water bottles with glass bottles in the hotel’s luxury rooms and suites, and introducing a recycling programme for guest toiletries. Our fleet of certified CarbonNeutral collection vehicles means extra collections do not add to a customer’s carbon footprint We took the approach that by engaging with key stakeholders, such as the catering team, the facilities team and, more generally with all employees by holding a Waste Awareness Day, we could overall make a much bigger impression. Of course, we also recognise that

there will always be some items which need to be sent for recycling and reprocessing, and indeed some general waste that cannot meet these criteria and needs to be disposed of. Ideally this non-recyclable material will be diverted from landfill via Energy from Waste facilities, where it helps to generate green electricity to power our homes. That’s why, when we do our very detailed audits, we look at every single component of waste and provide the best solutions for the environment. At our heart is innovation and we never stop seeking new ideas - we can help our customers to embrace those ideas and make real change. It all starts with a conversation - so come and talk to us about the difference we can make together with you and your customers. To speak to a Grundon expert about the waste management initiatives you can introduce to help your customers meet their waste requirements, please contact: info@grundon.com 01753 686 777 WWW.GRUNDON.COM

A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG

Solving the recruitment challenge Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports. I suspect I’m not the only person expressing concern right now about the growing recruitment challenge in cleaning. Yes, it’s always been harder with cleaning than in most industries, for reasons we all know well. But to these has now been added the complication of Brexit and I’m already hearing stories about EU staff returning home, either because of uncertainty, or because the weakness of sterling is making their pay packet worth less back home than previously. And that’s just the start. The reality, under evolving government proposals for points or salarybased immigration control, is that with or without a deal, in 21 months’ time the inflow of EU staff looking for lower paid work in the UK will come to an end. Unless different rules apply to immigration from other countries, we will then be left with indigenous supply as our only source of labour for cleaning contracts. That frightens me, as British attitudes to working in our industry have changed in the last few years and I don’t hear many solutions being offered about how we address this. The whole thing is like a ticking time bomb that we’re too afraid to even think about. So what do we do? Well, I see there being two linked solutions. The first is an internal and external public relations challenge, the second about training. The link is that they both come down to the same fundamental issue, the use of the term ‘low-skilled’. This month I’m just focusing on PR and how that relates to front line staff, the toughest recruitment challenge. Perceptions are difficult things to deal with. The fact is there are millions of ‘low-skilled’ jobs in the UK carried out at anti-social times of day, many in cleaning, but far more in call centres, retail, hospitality and so on. The difference with cleaning is it’s perceived as a dirty

job that’s therefore beneath people and it’s this perception we need to address. The PR task is around getting both client organisations and ourselves, the contractors, to value the work cleaners do, in fact to make a conspicuous point of valuing it. No-one questions the critical importance of cleaning in healthcare, food production, data rooms, sterile ‘clean’ rooms, special needs schools, areas affected by norovirus, and so on. But as an industry, do we do enough to highlight the value of our work in creating a gleaming environment and reducing the spread of infection across the more commonly cleaned environments hot desking offices, public venues, or the UK’s 32,000 schools? The fact is, it’s easy not to notice good cleaning or understand how it is achieved, but once the role is more valued, it should by rights be easier to justify the cost of providing it, as a result of which pay rates can rise in tandem. A steep hill to climb, I know. Of course, it’s one thing to emphasise the value of cleaning through our own staff recruitment and induction procedures, but it’s another to convince clients of our cleaners’ importance and maybe this is where our industry bodies could help. How? Well I heard a gratifying example last month of how a major bank in the city insists that the outsourced cleaning staff wear the same uniforms as its own FM team, that they have access to the same welfare facilities - canteen, gym, etc - and attend the same FM briefings. The word to describe this is ‘inclusiveness’, and through a subtle process of case studies and media projection, it’s this type of attitude that we should be exploring more with the client FM community. Next month - talking less about ‘low-skilled’ and more about ‘highly trained’. WWW.DOCCLEANING.CO.UK

For example, cleaning machine manufacturer MotorScrubber has confirmed it will be launching a new model at the show, and disinfection specialist Centrego will be showcasing an updated and refined product range. Moerman will also be debuting two new products. Moerman’s Jeroen Van Hecke said: “We first came to the Cleaning Show in London in 2015 where we launched our innovative Liquidator squeegee channel for window cleaning professionals and the reaction was fantastic, so it’s great to be returning this year. We are particularly looking forward to meeting partners and customers at the Window Cleaning Village and watching window cleaners take part in the first ever Window Cleaning World Cup. In addition, we will be hosting demonstrations of all our latest equipment and will be launching some exciting products for the first time anywhere in Europe. They will include a revolutionary device called Dr Angle and a new version of our very popular Excelerator squeegee.” Speakers taking part in the three-day conference programme have also revealed more details of what they will be sharing with delegates. Cleanology’s Dominic Ponniah, who will be looking at the issue of pay, said: “Wages have come into sharp focus in recent years, but cleaning firms are

all too aware that clients have the final say. But what do their employees say? Would they prefer to work for a company that remunerates all its staff fairly? And does higher pay translate into a higher standard of work?” CJ Green, founder of business leadership consultancy Tovip Ltd, will be talking about professional development. She said: “There has never been a more exciting time for modern workforces and at the same time never a more challenging time for employers to meet modern workforce demands. I am excited to join the Cleaning Show this year to evolve the discussion on innovation through people.” In contrast, Dean Pearce from SWRNewstar will be focussed on the issue of food waste. He said: “If we are to meet the future food demands of a growing global population, we must tackle food waste. My presentation will lift the lid on the true cost of food waste, providing both the economic and environmental case for reduction.” Lorcan Mekitarian from RPC bpi recycled products is participating in a panel discussion about recycling and the circular economy. will continue to develop and occupy real estate despite continued high costs and changes in workplace working practices. Balancing social and environmental aspects alongside commercial needs is a fine line but it is easier to achieve if people ‘stop and think ’ when replacing their office furniture and assets. Also on show on stand C10 will be the Tork SmartOne Mini Twin, an alternative to the jumbo roll, along with a full range of skincare products. “We have introduced a series of innovations and upgrades to the market over the past few years and we’re keen to show them all off to our customers at once,” said Essity’s sales manager, Stuart Hands. “We believe the Cleaning Show will serve as the ideal multi-product platform.” Aimed at high-traffic washrooms in environments such as airports, busy service stations and stadiums, Tork PeakServe caters for over 1000 washroom visitors between refills. Hand towels in the Tork PeakServe system are compressed by 50% during production which doubles the number of towels that can fit into the dispenser while also reducing refilling time by half. Designed to make life easier for cleaners in large, sprawling facilities is Tork EasyCube. This digital software uses sensors to ‘connect’ washroom facilities and allow the cleaner to check via a smartphone or tablet when a dispenser is running low or when a facility is experiencing particularly heavy traffic. The Tork Reflex system has recently been improved to make it easier to use and boost efficiency in the kitchen. The dispenser has a new rotating nozzle that allows the user to tear off a length of paper in one fluid motion from any angle. www.tork.co.uk 36 MARCH 2019

CHSA ACCREDITATION SCHEMES IN THE SPOTLIGHT - STAND C40 The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) is to spread the word about its Accreditation Schemes at the Cleaning Show, joining the British Cleaning Council on stand C40. Stephen Harrison, chairman of the CHSA, said: “The Cleaning Show is an important fixture in the annual calendar. It’s the perfect opportunity for celebrating our sector and we’re looking forward to spreading the word about our Accreditation Schemes to those who use cleaning and hygiene products as well as those who sell them.” Underpinned by independent inspection, the CHSA Accredited Distributor Scheme and Accreditation Schemes for Manufacturers of Soft Tissue, Plastic Refuse Sacks and Industrial Cotton Mops guarantee standards in the cleaning and hygiene sector. Conformance in the 2018 inspections was excellent. Gaining admittance to one of the CHSA’s Accreditation Schemes is challenging. Applicants must pass the initial audit of their product range and existing quality assurance processes conducted by the CHSA’s independent inspector. They are then audited frequently throughout the first year to ensure they maintain the standard that is required of them to maintain membership of one of the schemes. Thereafter members are visited by the Independent Inspector repeatedly through each year, product being selected from both the warehouse and production line for inspection. www.chsa.co.uk

WASHROOM HYGIENE

Planning is key to a healthy washroom Washrooms are germ hot spots in any building and require extra attention and planning to be kept hygienically clean. Jangro’s CEO, Joanne Gilliard, reports. EFFECTIVE washroom cleaning and maintenance takes skill and planning. After all, washrooms are prime hotspots for germs and bacteria in any building, so it is important to ensure these are kept at bay in order to prevent the spread of infection, and to provide a pleasant and hygienic washroom experience for the user. This makes good business sense too as unclean washroom facilities can leave a negative impression on the establishment as a whole. Within the washroom environment, we do two things that can spread harmful bacteria -

A deep clean needed for UK offices If you work in an office, you will have probably encountered somebody with an illness working and potentially spreading their germs. Offices have a responsibility, as well as a legal obligation, to be well stocked with the appropriate cleaning and hygiene products, as well as promoting best practice. Office Depot recently surveyed UK office-based workers to determine the levels of hygiene at their workplace, enquiring about systems that are available, as well as employee habits. In this article, George Hand, head of cleaning, hygiene and catering at Office Depot, explains the findings of the research and what they mean for UK office-based businesses. Professionals with purpose Maureen Marden, Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, discusses the important role that charitable giving plays in the organisation - to support employees in the cleaning industry, the wider community, and prepare the way ahead for new members. WHICHEVER association professionals belong to, the ethos of giving back and supporting their industry and community will be a feature of their membership. The same applies to Livery Companies today. For us at the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC), making a contribution to our Charitable Trust is an essential part of our organisation’s core function, and 60% of members contribute to the trust by way of a personal donation at the very least. Approximately 45-50% of our Charitable Trust’s annual income is distributed every year to good causes. Sectorfocused product catalogues published

ROBERT Scott has launched a new range of sector-focused product catalogues. Designed to assist customers with a carefully selected range of its most suitable products for each sector’s janitorial needs, the three catalogues available cover care homes, hotel, restaurant and catering (horeca), and rental linens. Utilising nearly 100 years of cleaning know-how, each catalogue has been created with input from the company’s ‘clean team’, combined with feedback from customers and distributors that supply the front-line staff working in those areas. Gill Ireson, head of sales at Robert Scott, said: “We had such positive feedback from our latest product catalogue launch at

Interclean, but we’re aware that our customers can sometimes be overwhelmed by the full range. By breaking down our catalogues into these sectorspecific categories, we can help educate more of our customers on the products that are most suitable for their sector and staff, and perhaps introduce new alternatives that will transform their cleaning regimes.” WWW.ROBERT-SCOTT.CO.UK “ONE of the biggest challenges facing cleaning companies is the productivity they achieve from their machines,” said Colin McCartney, national accounts manager for Ecobat Battery Technologies. “Due to the fact that they can be constantly called upon to clean spillages in supermarkets, for example, the very nature of the average cleaning machine means that it rarely has the opportunity to benefit from regimented charging. This really exposes the limitation of a typical gel monobloc battery, which sometimes only provides two or three hours of running time, while then requiring 12 hours to regain its full charge. With these facts in

Do you get enough run time?

mind, it is little wonder that many operators are looking at lithium-ion batteries as the answer, but these too have a number of drawbacks that shouldn’t be overlooked if the ideal battery/charger solution is to be found.” One of the advantages for cleaning businesses that utilise the knowledge and experience provided by Ecobat Industrial is its independence and ability to identify the most effective and efficient solutions. The company recommends a recent advance in battery technology - Lead Crystal - which is a lead-based alternative to lithium-ion that delivers the comparable power and deep cycle capability with similar ‘real-world’ recharging periods, but at a significantly reduced cost. Matching the correct charger is as important as identifying the most appropriate battery for the application, particularly with a highly engineered product such as Lead Crystal, which is why Ecobat has also introduced a tailor-made charger to make up its Rapid Charge System. WWW.ECOBATINDUSTRIAL.TECH ENVIRONMENTALLY friendly cleaning company Bio-D has set a target to introduce

The company is aiming to become greener than ever before in a bid to decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill, in addition to reducing overall energy consumption. Already 74% to target, Bio-D launched new packaging at the beginning of 2018 to help achieve its goal, comprising of rHDPEs (recyclable high-density polyethylenes), which are made from recycled used plastic bottles rather than single-use plastics. This has now been introduced across the majority of products.
