QU ALUMNA JANE BLAZEL LOOS CREDITS SERVANT LEADERSHIP AS ONE OF THE FRANCISCAN VALUES THAT STANDS OUT IN HER LIFE AND CAREER.

FALL 2022
With our earliest building dating to the 1870s, Quincy University’s park-like campus looks exactly right.
Friars Field, our stately trees, the nineteenth-century beauty of Francis Hall, and the signs and banners on campus all lead to the conclusion that any student who attends QU will have an amazing college experience. From the beginning, our university was designed for the success of our students, complete with beautiful spaces for learning and reflection.
If one looks more closely, though, there are many indications that Quincy University is, more specifically, a Catholic and Christian university, founded by the Franciscan Friars who arrived in Quincy over 160 years ago. Today, signs of our Catholic identity are everywhere, with statues and crucifixes found throughout campus. Even the beautiful fountain in front of Francis Hall was built long ago through the generosity of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic fraternal organization of which I have long been a member.
For decades, social scientists and educational specialists have conducted research on how to facilitate student success. That cutting-edge research will continue to be incorporated in our program for Success by Design at Quincy University, and rightly so. You can learn more about today’s QU and our commitment to student success in the current issue of QUniverse.
Our dedication to student success, however, did not begin in the past few years. The Catholic and Franciscan educational traditions have always emphasized rigor and academic quality. Across the centuries, students at St. Francis Solanus College, Quincy College, and Quincy University have been challenged to learn, to grow, to achieve.
But there is more to education than knowledge. As the QU mission statement tells us, we at QU seek the knowledge that leads to wisdom. Such an education requires us to confront fundamental questions of faith and reason. We can explore those questions richly and fully because we can speak so freely about thousands of years of Judeo-Christian and Catholic thinking about those questions.
Today’s universities would not exist without the support of the Catholic Church for the liberal arts and for academic pursuits in the many branches of knowledge. At Quincy University, our founders were German members of the Franciscan order,
friars (“brothers”) who brought their German ideas about higher education to the frontier town of Quincy.
This past summer, as the threat posed by COVID-19 receded, I had the good fortune to join dozens of Catholic university presidents from the United States and Canada on a trip to Rome and the Vatican. This week-long seminar was intended to help us expand our understanding of the relationship between the Church, the over 200 Catholic universities in the United States, and the tens of thousands of Catholic educational institutions throughout the world. (Yes, I attended classes, and I took notes.)
What did I learn in a very hot and sweaty week at the Holy See? In the twenty-first century, Catholic higher education continues a tradition of exceptional rigor and academic quality. At the same time, we recognize new ethical challenges brought on by scientific advances, such as stem cell research and artificial intelligence. Recent changes in the organization of the Roman Curia, the Church’s bureaucracy, will affect Catholic universities. So will the continuing decline in the number of sisters, brothers, and priests available to teach at wonderful institutions like QU. Quincy University, like other great Catholic universities around the world, will respond to these changes and will continue to be proudly Catholic. We will welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds, while relying on our Catholic heritage to provide the conditions for a successful and thriving university community. With the presidents of Catholic universities through North America and the world, I am honored to report that Quincy University remains the source of the finest educational opportunities and the best program for moral and personal development the Western tradition has ever produced.
Sincerely, Brian McGee, PhD President

WRIGHT’S FAITH AND LOVE OF RUNNING HAVE OVERLAPPED ALMOST HIS ENTIRE LIFE.

OUEKIE WRIGHT ’22
Open to over 20 various island nations, the CUT Games, which have been around since the mid-1980s, is an opportunity for students from ages 5 to 14 to compete.
He was baptized at the age of ten, and his bishop ordained him to preach in his home church by the age of sixteen.
“Bishop Wedderburn encouraged me. He told me that if God didn’t see me fit for it, He wouldn’t give it to me.”
Wright's faith helped him through some difficult times and steered him to the decision to pursue a college education.
Growing up in poverty, getting to college was hard to imagine, especially when
attending grade school and high school was difficult.
“I missed a lot of school growing up because my family was not able to support me financially,” said Wright. “There were times I would have to wear the same uniform several days in a row because they were expensive, and we could only afford one.”
He knew getting into college would be difficult. Because of his sporadic education, his grades suffered. Paying for college would also be a challenge. Despite the hurdles, Wright took the initiative and began to apply to colleges, asking for help and working to raise money to cover tuition.

“I
MY COUNTRY, MY LOVE FOR RUNNING GREW.”
Wright’s impact comes from his determination and resilience from childhood to graduation and beyond.
IF YOU WANT IT, YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR IT.
After learning more about the faith background of QU, Wright, who was attending another college at the time, reached out to the coach of the Track and Field program at QU. He was offered a spot on the team and transferred to QU.
His love for competing in track and field and his faith led him to QU. His hard work and determination made getting there possible.
Wright transferred his strong work ethic to his coursework and training once he made it to college. He made a schedule, allowing time for class, studying, and training. He adapted to the culture, learning to accept the differences and to communicate. He worked during the summers to pay his tuition.
Wright credits the difficulties he faced as opportunities that helped build him into the person he is today. He is grateful to his grandmother, who pushed him out of his comfort zone, and his mother for showing him how to be a better person.

IT WAS A PERFECT DAY FOR THE HOME TEAM.
The graduating Hawks of 2022 marched onto the field of the Quincy University football stadium on May 14.
The 159th spring Commencement ceremony was conducted there on a brilliantly sunny afternoon, celebrating the achievements of 156 undergraduates and 32 graduate degree recipients. Friends and family thronged the stands as the QU Marching Band greeted the crowd with the familiar notes of Pomp and Circumstance.
Joining the graduates were Ralph M. Oakley ’80 and William E. “Bill” Taylor ’60, who were awarded the honorary degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters during the ceremony.
Graduate Ouekie Wright ’22 was chosen by his classmates to provide the traditional welcome. Wright, a native of Jamaica, is an ordained pastor who livestreams to thousands of followers worldwide as the founder and leader of Prophetic Deliverance Fire Ministry. True to his gift for uplifting his listeners, Wright brought both oratory and song to his greeting.
“One of the best gifts in life is to have to the opportunity to do something you never think you could do,” he said. He recalled the various obstacles he faced in obtaining his education.
“Thank you, Quincy University, for opening your door to us. Graduates, as we leave, let’s remember that Quincy University, your professors, family, and fellow graduates will be there for you.” Wright concluded by singing these memorable words:
LEAN ON ME WHEN YOU'RE NOT STRONG AND I'LL BE YOUR FRIEND I'LL HELP YOU CARRY ON YOU JUST CALL ON ME BROTHER WHEN YOU NEED A HAND WE ALL NEED SOMEBODY TO LEAN ON

“THE STRUGGLES OF LIFE STARTED TO HIT ME LEFT AND RIGHT TO THE POINT WHERE ATTENDING SCHOOL WAS VERY CHALLENGING. LISTEN, EDUCATION IS ONE OF THE GREAT ASSETS TO LIFE. YOU WILL TODAY HOLD A PRECIOUS GIFT IN YOUR LIFE THAT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WISH THEY HAD OR SEEK TO HOLD ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE AND THAT’S YOUR BACHELOR’S DEGREE OR MASTER’S.”
Commencement speaker, Ralph Oakley, challenged students to recall their personal journeys to Quincy University and shared the diverse responses he had received when posing this question to alums from many eras. Like Oakley, the retired president and CEO of Quincy Media Incorporated and a leading supporter of QU, the alumni found the roots of their lifelong success and happiness in lessons learned on campus.

knowledge
“My guess is you learned as much in your relationships with other students, faculty, and staff as you did any other way. It is those people along with your fellow students that make QU the community that it is. I hear this often from the students with whom I talk,” says Oakley.
Oakley encouraged graduates to infuse their next steps with passion. “Following your passion will more likely make you happy, make you feel content with who you are and what you're doing, and it will also likely make you a unique contributor in a world that needs your contribution.
I hope whatever your passion extends to over the course of your lives, I encourage you to remember this place, the place that helped form you and prepare you for the rest of your life. I know for me, returning home to QU has meant a great deal.
And remember all those QU alums I talked about just a couple of minutes ago, the ones who have had happiness and success in their lives? They ended up at QU for many different reasons, but what they have in common is they took the things they learned here with them and have not only been happy and content, but have become contributors to our community and the world.
They took their knowledge, mixed it with passion, and came up with an unbeatable combination. I suspect when they faced challenges throughout their lives it was that same passion and learning that helped carry them through.”
President Brian McGee echoed this vision in his concluding remarks. “You are forever part of a network of alumni that spans all 50 states and a dozen foreign countries. Your fellow alumni, your fellow Hawks will be a lifelong support to you in meeting life’s challenges, as you should be a support to them.”
“THIS BELOVED COMMUNITY IS YOURS. JOIN THE GENERATIONS OF ALUMNI WHO HAVE TRANSFORMED THE WORLD BY THE GOOD THEY HAVE DONE AND THE EXAMPLES THEY HAVE OFFERED.”

WE'RE COMING BACK
by Max Bennett ’17
ENERGY, ENERGY, ENERGY!
This is the message from Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Hawkins and Assistant Coach Tim Walsh.
“We’re coming back, but these are batteries charged,” said Coach Hawkins. “I mean full, fully charged. Fully excited on what we’re building, on top of that with 25 years of experience behind this from the last time we were here.”
The last time Steve “Hawk” Hawkins and Tim “Wishy” Walsh graced the Quincy University sidelines was back in the 1990s. For Hawkins, he was last here from 1990 to 2000, while Walsh was his assistant from 1994 to 1998. When a program has a coaching duo like Hawk and Wishy, one may think, what came first - a friendship or the coaching partnership?
The two coaches became friends around 1988. Hawk had just arrived in Quincy, while Wishy was coaching at Quincy Junior High School. After the two worked camps together, the first time Coach Hawkins became head coach, he knew who was the right fit for his assistant coach.
Having a chance to see him work, I could see how good he was as a coach. So when an assistant spot became available, that’s when I offered him the job and that’s when he came on board.
—Steve Hawkins
Not everything was smooth sailing during their first stint together on the Hawk bench, but the two coaches knew the community was something special. People we knew and people we didn’t know, just the well wishes and the excitement and how they were happy to have us back.
That’s something that really sticks with you.

the day that Steve Hawkins officially returned as the head coach of the Quincy University Men’s Basketball program.
Before Hawk was officially announced, Coach Walsh’s phone was blowing up asking if he was coming back to Quincy.
Walsh’s boss at Mineral Area Community College asked “If Hawk gets that job, would you go? I said, well, yeah it’s a no brainer,” explained Coach Walsh. On the drive back to his hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Hawk called Wishy. During that phone call, “I think it’s going to be five seconds to say yes,” said Wishy.

He has made stops at Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri. Wishy has patrolled a NCAA Division One sideline at Idaho State University and the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. This is the third stint for Tim Walsh at Quincy University as he spent the 1986–1987 season at QU, which was the first year the Hawks participated in Division II basketball.

When you mention experience, Steve Hawkins has 20 plus years by himself. After the stint at QU in the 90s, Hawk went on to the Division One ranks. He spent twenty seasons in Kalamazoo on the Western Michigan University sidelines. During his tenure with the Broncos, Hawk compiled a record of 291 wins and 262 loses, including seven 20-win seasons.
What kind of basketball will the Hawks play under Hawkins and Walsh? We took that question to the coaches. “Our program's not for everybody because we're going to be very demanding of being physically and mentally tough defensive minded,” said Hawkins. “It’s representative of this community. It’s work hard, play hard, that’s what Quincy’s always been about for me anyway. They’re going to play really hard, and they’re going to do it with a smile on their face… it’s going to be very family oriented.”
There are a few things the staff is looking forward to come the fall of 2022. “The first day of practice, the first day of watching the guys when they combine (returners and newcomers), and here’s our team, that gives me butterflies,” explained Coach Hawkins.

In his first coaching stint at Quincy University, Hawkins compiled a record of 137-111 and had three NCAA Division II tournament appearances.
We are both pumped to get to work, to get these kids, to do everything it is that has to be done. One of the things that I think makes this relationship so easy is that it's a working relationship. We both have a similar idea on how you should run a program.

Jane Blazel Loos ’96 says her openness to new and different options has created many professional opportunities. Jane has worked the last 23 years within Johnson & Johnson gaining cross-sector experience in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medtech. She’s been a sales rep, regional training manager and district manager, and supported the sales teams in a Learning and Development role at Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Ten years ago, she took a leap of faith and moved to Warsaw, Indiana, to work in Marketing and Medical Devices. In March of 2020, Jane began her latest role of leading Professional and Commercial Education for North America, Medtech.
The Franciscan values woven throughout her Quincy University experience provide the foundation for how Jane approaches all aspects of life, personally and professionally. Service is one of the Franciscan values that stands out the most. Jane says she believes we should be in the service of others, and she works hard to follow a servant leadership mindset and make sure that people are always being put first. “In a corporate business setting this is not always the popular or easy way to proceed, but it is the right way. If you focus on people first the business will follow, and our company believes in that as well,” said Jane.
LIVING BY THEIR
CREDO
Jane is grateful to work for a company with global impact that is based on putting people first. Johnson and Johnson lives by their credo – putting the patient first when making all decisions, creating environments where people are safe and respected and treated like family, and encouraging and supporting volunteer work in communities and supporting causes that matter to employees.

One defining moment in Jane’s career symbolizes her commitment to serving others. The team she worked for created an award specifically for her that they called
A that time, Jane was the youngest and the only female District Manager on the team. She says that her first year as a leader was rocky, but then she studied servant leadership and mentored with two people who really embodied that philosophy, and she adapted her style significantly.

“WHEN THE TEAM GAVE ME THAT AWARD, I KNEW BY THE GRACE OF GOD I COULD HELP OTHERS ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.”
Jane continues to be driven by the impact that QU faculty had on her life and education. With Dr. Homan’s influence, Jane chose to minor in theology. Fr. Ken Capalbo was one of Jane’s favorite teachers. She still remembers him walking around the classroom excited about the historical moment that Quincy College was going to become Quincy University. Years later, Fr. Ken was the priest presiding over Jane and Chris’ wedding in the QU Chapel.
Jane’s father Bob Blazel, who taught at QU for 38 years, has been her greatest influence. Jane says her dad was quiet but quick witted, had a great sense of humor, remained calm in the craziness, and was a constant support. Jane adds that he also didn’t care what others thought of him. “I laugh as all those things are complete opposite in me, however, they are the foundation that I use to try and center myself. I will think what he would have done in this situation, and it helps me lead myself and others with a perspective different than mine.”
After Jane lost her father to brain cancer, she struggled with depression and anger. Jane turned to her faith and experienced God’s presence through it all. “I came out the other side with such a better understanding of how much I needed to ‘let go and let God’,” said Jane. She wrote a book about her dad to help her deal with the loss and grief and to keep the memories of her father alive.
As her faith grew and her career advanced, Jane was driven to give back to Quincy University through her time and talent and gifts. She adds that as alum we all have an opportunity to give back to the University and support more students and help the university grow.

SEEKING WITH HUMILITY
When you walk across the campus of Quincy University, we hope you are aware of the Catholic and Franciscan heritage of the university. The names of the buildings, the statues of St. Francis and St. Clare, and the central location of St. Francis Solanus Chapel are there to remind visitors of that heritage.
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
Beyond what you see, we hope you sense that this place has purpose and direction. Great men and women leaders have lived and studied on these grounds. The campus atmosphere speaks not only to pursuit of wisdom and knowledge, but to the importance of service to others and the value of diversity in students, faculty and staff. Peace and nonviolence are foundational values in the University community.
Those values are why Fr. Joseph Zimmerman, OFM came to Quincy and why he remains committed to Quincy University.
Fr. Joe has served at Quincy University since 1970. He was a professor of sociology until 2003. He combined teaching with various administrative roles until his retirement in 2008. He now helps with weekend services in parishes in the Quincy area and has been involved in efforts toward racial justice at the diocesan level and in the Quincy community.
In recent years he has become involved in a group trying to improve living conditions for people living in substandard rental housing in Quincy. “Our Franciscan Order has continually urged us friars to be involved with the poor in places where we live. We have tried to do this here in Quincy,” Fr. Joe
said. For example, Fr. Melvin Grunloh, OFM, who began the MBA degree program at the University, once team-taught a course with Fr. Joe on social justice issues. The field of sociology led him to a sustained interest in such issues.
Fr. Joe was born in Decatur, Illinois, attended six years of high school and junior college in the Franciscan seminary in Westmont, Illinois, entered the Franciscan Order in 1955, studied philosophy for three years at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Cleveland, and theology for four years at the Franciscan seminary in Teutopolis, Illinois. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1962, and earned a doctorate in sociology at Harvard University in 1973.
Along with Pope Francis, Fr. Joe is concerned that we are losing the willingness to discuss concepts and beliefs that society has deemed controversial. People’s unwillingness to dialog about important issues has damaged both the Church and our local, state, and federal governments.
“The issue of abortion is polarizing our country and making political life impossible. Whether we are ‘pro-life’ or ‘pro-choice’, we need to approach people on the opposite side with respect, vulnerability, and willingness to keep the conversation going,” Fr. Joe said.

TAKE A STAND AND LIVE BY TRUTH

MAKE FRANCISCAN VALUES TAKE SHAPE IN REALITY
Fr. Joe also encourages us to make Franciscan values take shape in reality. For example, terms such as diversity, servant leadership, pursuit of wisdom and knowledge, and of justice and peace, need to be incorporated into our daily lives and occupations.
Fr. Joe contends: “Our modern societies are rushing here and there without any sense of direction. We need to reconnect with our traditions of seeking truth with humility, shaping our life goals with the help of our religious traditions, and appreciating what art, music, philosophy, theology, and history can do to give us all a sense of purpose and enthusiasm in our lives together.”

Coffee Bar
On a sluggish Wednesday morning, students can get a free cup of coffee and a warm, friendly smile from the staff in the Student Success Center (SSC).
“We were recovering from two major events, heavy rains that flooded the SSC and then COVID protocols,” said Kristen Liesen, director of experiential learning. “We started Wake Up Wednesday to get to know our students so they would come to us when needing help, build morale with faculty and staff, increase traffic, and we really like fun!”
Wake Up Wednesday has provided many rewards for students. SSC Administrative Assistant, Cassie Phillips, says that students come up to the counter on Wednesdays to get their drink and say, “This is the reason I got out of bed this morning” or “We love Wednesdays only for the coffee.” Phillips adds that some students from the softball team came by after their early morning practice, and they shared that when they put their hands in to break from their practice, they yelled, “Wake up Wednesday.”
In addition to Wake Up Wednesdays, the staff has hosted events for students in the SSC, including Queso with QUEST, Serve with US (QUEST/Service Learning), Finals Week Study Days, Christmas Movie Days, Thanksmas, Carnival Day, and Iced Coffee Days.
The staff has created these special days and events to help students de-stress and help students understand and utilize the array of resources available for student success housed in the SSC.
Student Success Center
Centrally located in the lower level of Quincy University’s Brenner Library, the SSC provides computer labs, individual and group workspaces, academic advising, and career services.
The Student Success Center offers free tutoring for most QU courses and writing and study skills workshops. Supplemental Instruction is also available in the classes that students traditionally find challenging, and large group study sessions meet weekly for those designated courses.
“The success coaches want to make sure that students know that we are available to help with a variety of challenges,” said Saadia Ali Aschemann, assistant director of student success. “Being a college student is difficult. We are prepared to help QU students navigate the intricacies of everyday life on campus. Students should feel free to visit us at any time!”
Office of Student Development
Students can participate in student events and intramurals or work with the director of student engagement to start a campus club or an organization. Students can connect with the housing director with their questions or concerns about housing. The housing director also oversees the QU House System, designed to make our campus a place where students feel included and welcome. Every new student, including transfer students and commuter students, is assigned to one of the seven houses where they remain a member throughout their time at the university, no matter where they live.

“All of these services are key factors in QUs Success by Design initiative of caring for the whole person, so students have a customized success plan to graduate on time, find their passion and be prepared for life; and faculty are integral in this process through instruction and advising.”
Success Coaches
The staff roles in the SSC are designed to meet students' needs academically, personally, and socially. Success coaches connect students who feel overwhelmed in their classes or like they are falling behind to the appropriate tools and assistance
for their success. They provide consistent support to students as they work to achieve their goals.
“We have a great new team of passionate and enthusiastic success coaches,
supported by administrative assistants that are actively working to improve systems and increase opportunities for student involvement and success,” said Emily Cook, success coach.
The QUEST Center
The QUEST Center supports, coordinates, and implements academic-experiential learning collaborating with faculty, staff, and the community. It houses career services, credit for prior-learning, internships, service learning, study abroad, and undergraduate research. The staff work closely with students on activities like preparing a resume and cover letter or conducting mock interviews to help students prepare for an internship, job placement, or graduate school acceptance.

Designers take part in a variety of creative disciplines--social impact design, communication, illustration, research, service design, environmental design, packaging,
education, user experience, business strategy, experience design, user interface design, data science, animation, interaction design, motion graphics, game design, algorithm and artificial intelligence, AR and VR design, and of course “traditional graphic design.”

HOW IS QU’S
HOW HAS THE FIELD CHANGED IN THE PAST DECADE?
WHAT PROFICIENCIES ARE EMPLOYERS SEEKING?
AGary Meacher:
Over the past decade a greater emphasis has been placed on research-driven design. Creative fields can be subjective and the best answer to subjectivity is data/research.
Designers possess a very unique skillset in that they tend to be particular about
GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM
CHANGING IN RESPONSE TO MARKETPLACE DEMANDS?
AGary Meacher:
Recent surveys conducted by AIGA (The Professional Association for Design) suggest that most working designers are skilled in drawing, painting, photography, film and video, user interface and user experience design, data visualization, coding, copywriting, and art direction.
“Non-design" skills, like mentorship, leadership, project management, research, and public speaking play large roles as well. As a design practitioner myself, I can attest to the market's need for these skills and take pride in continuing to use my own freelance practice as a guinea pig for informing our curricular development.
details, endlessly curious, and naturally empathic. Those tools can be applied to any problem/opportunity.
The designers of yesterday who made things look pretty can now confidently call themselves creative problem-solvers who are experts in process.
AGary Meacher:
In the past 4 years our design program has been completely refreshed. We've revised traditional courses in graphic design and web design while also adding brand new courses in user experience and
user interface design, motion design, typography, and service learning oriented coursework in our design for change course. I'm particularly proud of our newest push towards collaboration by including computer science and communication courses within our degree track.
All of the faculty in the Art & Design Department are creative practitioners with active studios, freelance clients, and art exhibitions. We recognize the need for balancing high-level conceptual abilities and strong technical skills.
With an eye to the future (and proper technical and financial support), I'd like to explore new courses in video production, animation, game design, and a catch-all for everything new in what I'm currently workshopping as an “emerging media” course.

WHAT NEW DEGREES, COURSES, TECHNOLOGY, AND OTHER ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN ADDED? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DEVELOP IN THE FUTURE?
Q&A WITH Gary Meacher, MFA
by Jen Wingerter ’13
“As a teacher, I live for the “aha” moments. When someone is struggling to grasp a concept/technique or having a hard time coming up with a creative direction, and they start to feel like giving up—but suddenly, that perfect storm of elbow grease, experience, knowledge, collaboration, and fairy dust hits them. “Aha!”—and then we are off to the races.”
—Gary Meacher, MFA
What are the three principles you want to instill in students?
If I could instill just one thing, it would be the tools and self-confidence to be an independent lifelong learner. Our field is ever-changing. When I was in college, there was no iPhone. The wave of innovation and culture-shifting that has happened since that device alone demonstrates that we as designers need to keep on top of technology, new processes and workflows, and take part in that change.
I want students to fuel their curiosity. I want them to explore the why, which will drive them to new heights, spark innovation, inspire, and leave them with a sense of satisfaction. This fuel can take the form of being open to inspiration, going to art galleries, consuming any and every book, blog, video, movie, album, etc. More simply put, experience life—and do it through the lens of curiosity.
To round it out with one more principle, I would stress the importance of developing empathy. From a designer’s perspective, empathy is a key skill used to understand the audience we are working to engage with, and that understanding is a major force for success. As a participant in the human condition, having empathy in any given situation will go a long way.
What are two things that bring you joy?
When I was younger and still living in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, I took so much comfort in being by Lake Erie, watching the waves, feeling the breeze, and just taking those moments in to relax and recharge. Now, in Quincy, I look for those moments at the waterfront of the Mississippi River.
I am a nerd for and a collector of many things. If you swing by my office on campus, you’ll see my growing collection of vintage tin toy robots peppering my bookshelves. I get so inspired just by looking at them, studying their fun patterns and color schemes, and turning the key to set their gears in motion (nerdy, I know). Perhaps the most joy comes from sharing these passions with my son (nearly five years old) and having all sorts of imaginative play with my nerdom.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life? Why?
My wife. I first fell in love with Mia for her outlook on life—always looking for a silver lining. As our lives merged and we became a team (some would say married, but I think a team is a more appropriate term), we found ways to support each other
and pick up each other’s slack. Her “cup half full” mentality knocked my half-empty cup over and helped me find joy in many aspects of life. Mia and the family we’ve made together continue to be why I get up in the morning and the motivation I need to work on being a good person and effect change in my community.
What are you most proud of?
As a creative professional, I never get tired of seeing work I’ve done pop up in the community. I think I will always hold on to this child-like amazement that, at one point, this piece never existed— I researched and developed this piece, created it on my computer, tested it to make sure it was meeting the goals we set out to meet, and now it is out in the world. So cool. So, so, cool.
As an educator, I take tremendous pride in the responsibility of instilling life lessons and building independent learners that go on to contribute to the world in so many ways. It’s the greatest reward of my professional life to see a student go on to succeed and carve out their piece of the world.

Gary's hope...
I want QU’s Art Department to be the region's go-to hub for design education. We have a unique value proposition with our liberal arts education that fosters curiosity, Franciscan value infusion that amplifies my focus on the importance of empathy, and our emphasis on service learning, demonstrating the value of being an engaged member of your community. QU produces students that are valuable members of society. With the proper backing and support, we can lead our region with technological proficiency through design, kickstart a culture of innovation and creativity, and build on Quincy’s thriving arts scene.

Cupertine Hall turns 100 years old
The buildings of the QU campus tell the amazing story of this institution. For 100 years, Cupertine Hall has been part of our story.
The Franciscan friars built Cupertine Hall in 1922 for approximately $7,000. Named for a revered Franciscan saint, St. Joseph of Cupertino, Cupertine Hall’s first floor was initially a steam laundry, while the second floor was an isolation hospital and guest house.
Over the years, Cupertine Hall has been used to meet the changing needs of the university. In the 1950s, a portion of the building was used as a residence hall. Later, Cupertine Hall was used by the art department and for the offices of the student newspaper, the Falcon. In 2021, Cupertine Hall’s exterior was renovated. Today, this venerable building houses utilities for Francis Hall and essential information technology infrastructure.
Do you have stories you’d like to share from living or working in Cupertine Hall? If so, contact QU at qualumni@quincy.edu.

IN MEMORIAM ...Continued
Thomas A. Oakley
Thomas A. Oakley, 89, passed away April 13, 2022, in Quincy, Ill. He was born on June 24, 1932, to Thomas C. and Mary Susan Sullivan Oakley.
Tom graduated from Quincy High School in 1950 and from Duke University in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in economics. Following graduation, he served in the Air Force Strategic Air Command as a pilot. After completing his service, Tom returned to Quincy in 1958 to re-enter the family business of Quincy Newspapers, Inc. as a fourth generation family member.
After stepping down as President/CEO, Tom remained active in the company as publisher of the Herald-Whig and as a member of its board of directors of Quincy Media.
Tom Oakley was regarded as a tireless advocate for economic development and improving the infrastructure of the region. He used personal leadership and the company's media outlets to enhance the quality of life for the regions it served through support of many community projects and efforts. Notably, Tom helped found the predecessor organization to the Great River Economic Development Foundation (GREDF).
Tom spent over 60 years working on highway development for the tri-states. Through his leadership, the region has become the crossroads of three major highways linking the tri-state region to the rest of the country. Because of his work, a portion of the Chicago to Kansas City Expressway was named the Thomas A. Oakley highway.
Tom was recognized with many awards for his community service including induction into the Quincy Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame and being the first recipient of the annual Boy Scout community service award.
Tom served his industry in many ways and was recognized by organizations for his service, including lifetime awards from the Midwest Chapter of the National Television Arts and Sciences, the Broadcasters Foundation of America, the National Association of Broadcasters, the Illinois Broadcasters Association, and the Illinois Press Association.
Tom was the devoted husband to Anne (McDonald) and father to their three children. He spent many days with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at family events in Quincy, Florida, and Michigan. He was an active golfer and served for over 40 years on the USGA Greens Section Committee and had the chance to play courses all over the world.
QUniverse | Fall 2022 38
As President/CEO from 1969-2008, Tom led the company's growth from owning and operating the Quincy Herald-Whig and WGEM AM-FM-TV to adding television stations in several markets and one additional newspaper.
In 1975, Tom was awarded an honorary degree from Quincy University where he served on the Board of Trustees.

2021-2022 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
Linda Moore ’81, PhD Chair of 2021-2022 QU Fund Drive
39 www.quincy.edu
June 2021—May 2022
Iam privileged to thank you again this year for the generosity you have shown to Quincy University. As you may know, QU received record-breaking levels of support from alumni and friends across the nation, of all ages, which allows us to continue to serve our students in a way very few institutions of higher learning are able. Thanks to you, our total funds raised for the last fiscal year were $10,433,960. This represents the largest one-year amount ever given to Quincy University.
A special thanks to QU Fund Chair Linda Moore ‘81 for her support and leadership of this successful drive, which brought in $1,231,608, supporting everything from new band uniforms to the naming of a new business school to continual technology upgrades. This also represented the largest one-year amount ever given to QU for the annual campaign.
Endowment gifts accounted for $4,274,806 of the total giving for the year and allowed our endowment to soar to its highest level ever during the year. As you know, our endowment is critical to Quincy University’s sustainability and provides a reliable source of income for scholarships and academic program enrichments. And, you guessed it, this too was the largest one-year amount ever given for endowment support.
In addition to all of this, $2,768,318 was raised in restricted funds to support academic and athletic programs, student clubs and organizations, and facility improvements. We are thrilled that this also was the largest one-year amount of restricted support ever received.
My wife and I are honored to become members of the Quincy and Quincy University communities and hope to meet as many of you as possible in the coming months. Thanks to those of you who have made us feel so welcome.
It is, indeed, a great day to be a Hawk!

~ Deceased FUEL YOUR PASSIONS WITH CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract under which a not-for-profit organization, like Quincy University – in return for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or other assets – agrees to pay a fixed amount of money to the donor for their lifetime. The donor establishes a fund which provides a current tax deduction, plus a stream of tax advantaged income with attractive interest rates. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HEART IS. BENEFITS FOR YOU: • Lifetime payments • Income tax deduction • No probate on donated assets • Ensure long-term stability for the not-for-profit organization TO LEARN MORE, CONTACT: MATT BERGMAN | bergmma@quincy.edu | 217-228-5221 Honor Roll of Donors 2021-2022 www.quincy.edu 57

“I believe Quincy PREPARED ME for more than a career path, it prepared me for life.”
BOB KADZIE ’73 cherishes every moment he spent at Quincy College. (Yes, it was College when Bob attended.)
“Quincy was the perfect place for me. I loved the SMALL CLASSES and the very close relationships with all of the faculty,” Bob said.
Bob highlights one faculty member he notes as more of a MENTOR than an instructor.
“Richard Magliari, or as we all called him ‘Mags’, was a special influence in my life at Quincy and beyond. He always had time and GREAT ADVICE,” Bob said.
Bob credits the accepting and COMFORTING CULTURE of Quincy and the Franciscans for the enhanced friendships that began at QU. “I consider myself blessed to have met and befriended a group of guys that I have laughed, cried and grown with and loved for over 50 years,” Bob said.
Bob remains committed to SUPPORTING QU so many more young people have the opportunities that he had.
“I want my Alma Mater to REMAIN STRONG and offer the Franciscan values that I believe we need more now than ever, to its students and the entire community.”
