HEALTHCARE: COVID-19 IS NOT THE ONLY DANGER Healthcare issues such as MRSA, the norovirus, and c.difficile, seems to have faded from public attention since the start of the pandemic. However, these conditions are still a threat, as shown by reports of various hospitals; in fact, outbreaks of these illnesses do still occur. In 2020, numerous hospital beds were closed in the UK, due to a surge in the number of norovirus cases, and at least two c.difficile clusters emerged in North America. The enhanced focus on hand and surface hygiene will at any rate positively impact the incidence of other infections; hygienic hand rub, disinfection on surfaces and limitation of the number of people allowed on site give to germs fewer opportunities to enter and spread around buildings. Numerous studies have in fact proven that good hand hygiene helps to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections such as MRSA, c.difficile, sepsis and norovirus by up to 50 per cent.

MICROPLASTICS ARE ALSO IN THE SNOW A research carried out by McGill University in Montreal and published in Environmental Pollution certifies the presence of micro and nanoplastics in snow samples taken in Canada during spring 2019. The method used by the authors consists of a spectrometry that allows to identify plastic particles in minimal quantities, down to picograms. In numerous samples, fragments of different polymers were found, such as polyethylene, also widely used in the food industry, and polyethylene glycol, a liquid version of it which is found in antifreeze products. Such products can become airborne and picked up by the snow. Worrying news come also from the analysis of waste water; colonies of bacteria gather around plastic micro and nano fragments, bacteria that can spread among the population through waterways and the sea. In fact, the filtration systems of purifiers are not able to retain plastic particles, and sanitation methods are not sufficient to kill all bacteria.

CLIMATE, AGREEMENT ON THE REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS Member States and the European Parliament have reached an interim political agreement introducing the EU’s climate neutrality target for 2050 into legislation and a collective target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, a sharp increase compared to the previous EU target for 2030 which envisaged a 40% reduction. The agreement envisages the establishment of a European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change to provide scientific advice and report on EU measures, objectives and budgets, a priority given to emissions reductions over removals regarding the 2030 target, and an intermediate climate target for 2040 to be proposed by the Commission. The agreement is now subject to definitive approval by the Member Countries and by the plenary of the European Parliament.

BETTARI ACQUIRES MEDISAN In this economically critical moment for our country, Bettari Detergents wants to keep faith in its philosophy and send a clear and future-oriented message: continuing to invest in the improvement and widening of its offer. With this aim in mind, the firm concluded a delicate M&A operation incorporating The Turin-based company Medisan, an important reality operating for several years on the Italian market and offering many disinfectant products registered at the Ministry of Health; among them, two well-known products stand out: Medisept 361 and Medisept 361 Plus. The operation, directly managed by the firm’s top management, was successful after weeks of negotiations at the end of which both parties declared themselves fully satisfied. Bettari Detergents strikes a crucial blow in line with its investment plan aimed at gaining more and more relevant market shares, replying to the professional cleaning sector’s new dynamics.

A NEW CLEANING PROTOCOL IN ENGLAND According to the National Health Service, this new protocol launched in response to Covid-19 consents for the first time in England to regulate domestic cleaning in public spaces by means of an official standard that can be measured and audited. The official protocol, developed within the NHS and accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health, aims at reducing the number of hospital admissions from bacterial and viral diseases, raising the current cleaning standards. The basis of the protocol is provided by the course “Cleaning the NHS way”, which is said to be easy to understand even for those whose first language is not English. The certification depends on the outcome of an exam at the end of the training. Originally developed by the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, the cleaning protocol is now being rolled out nationwide. Profits from the course will be reinvested back into NHS Trusts and put towards improving frontline patient care and treatment.

EU WILL ACCEPT AMERICAN VACCINATED TOURISTS As declared by the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen in an interview with The New York Times, American tourists who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to visit the European Union over the summer: “The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines. One thing is clear: all 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by E.M.A”. Von der Leyen did not give a specific timing, but the newspaper writes that the new rules could be put in place as early as this summer, while vaccinations increase worldwide. In particular in the USA, the vaccination campaign is proceeding very quickly, and will most likely succeed in immunizing the 70% of the adult population by mid-June. For several weeks, technical discussions have been underway between the EU and the US on how to make the vaccination certificates of each place legible, so that citizens can use them for unrestricted travel.

Professional Cleaning: market, TURNOVER and TRENDS

The annual survey on the Production sector carried out by Cerved ON_ for Afidamp shows a good trend for the chemical industry, while machinery and paper sector remain stable Federica Rossi

10

T

he professional Cleaning sector has found itself, this year as never before, at the center of the scene and to be a point of reference for all those economic sectors, such as Health, Schools, Horeca and Retail, that have had to manage and apply the theme of hygiene and cleaning. Very interesting are the data that emerged from the surveys commissioned to Cerved ON_ on behalf of Afidamp, the association that brings together the main operators in the professional Cleaning sector. The quantitative survey on the turnover of the Production sector was accompanied for the first time by a qualitative one, focused on growth levers to intercept the strengths, weaknesses and sales channels. In the qualitative survey, the companies interviewed were also asked for an estimate relating to the trend in 2020, with a focus on the first half of the year. (chart 1 and 2) Overall, the sector of Italian production companies in the professional Cleaning sector represented a total value of approximately 3.5 billion euros in 2019, divided into Chemicals, Machines, Paper, Equipment, Fibers, Cloths and other products. The companies associated with Afidamp represent a value of 1.8 billion euros and in 2019 they recorded an overall growth of 2%. With very high export quotas, it is one of the most prosperous sectors of the economy of our country also abroad. The survey was conducted in a period between July and November 2020, and it was

divided into the following categories: Professional Cleaning Machines (41%), Chemicals (40%), Equipment (21%), Fibers and Cloths (9%), Paper (7%), other Products (9%).The geographic distribution of the sample sees a greater concentration in the North East (42%), North West (37%), while 15% is in Central Italy and 6% in the South and Islands. Most of the companies interviewed in 2019 had seen their turnover grow, also thanks to sales abroad, which for some sectors represents a very high share.

Chart 1

CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

The data of the Chemical sector are the ones that more bode well with respect to the growth assumptions in the future (52% growth assumptions). The sharp increase in the sale of disinfectants has increased the turnover of this sector between 100 and 200% compared to 2019. This figure was however balanced by the failure to sell other products otherwise used by schools, offices, gyms, hotels and restaurants. General cleaning and maintenance products have collapsed to percentages close to -30/40%. If 52% of the companies interviewed foresee growth in 2020 (with an average increase of 28%), 20% instead see their production down by about 19%. (chart 3)

Chart 2

MACHINES

The estimates for the Machinery sector see, for the first half of 2020, with some insights on the second half of the year, a decrease of 49% of the sample which estimates its

turnover decrease of an average of 22%. This decrease is mainly due to the freezing of production activities and difficulties regarding export, an activity which historically represented a high percentage for this category. Depending on the type of markets followed and products sold, there were also positive variations (about 20% of the sample) and situations of stability (28%). (chart 4)

PAPER AND TISSUE

An important stop has invested (and partially still invests) the Horeca sector, severely penalized. For example, the companies that produce paper materials, which are widely used in catering, expect a drop in turnover between 15 and 20% precisely due to the lack of purchases from this sector. (chart 5)

EQUIPMENT

Regarding the Equipment sector, 25% of respondents judge the trend in the first half of the year to be worse than initial forecasts. About 24% of companies expect a future increase in turnover, 26% believe it will decrease, while 47% are convinced that it will remain unchanged from the previous year. (chart 6) Overall, over 30% of the companies surveyed report having done worse this year. The

PATENTS FILED

From the number of patents filed in the last 5 years we can understand the trends and inclinations of the Cleaning sector. According to the survey, 26% of the sample filed new patents. 29% concerned the Machinery, Paper and Tissue sectors equally, while 14% of the patents concerned chemical products. These percentages are also an important signal of the production and engineering capacity of Italian companies.

causes can be attributed to the closures, the difficulty in moving and finding materials, the intermittent requests from customers, the lack of important markets and finally also the blocking for some months of some ATECO codes. (chart 7) An interesting overview is offered on customers served (for 65% wholesalers), on brands distributed (for 66% own brands), on sectors of greatest interest, represented by industry for 72%, Horeca for 59% and for 46% from Health. This overview is also a snapshot of the positive effects on the data sector of the MEC - Minimum Environmental Criteria - of which the publication of the revision announced for some time has been awaited. ■

TRENDS AND PROMOTION CHANNELS

The qualitative survey, photographing the trends in the sector, has focused its gaze on what may be the growth trends. 76% of the sample believe that the company website is the main communication channel, followed by the commercial sales force (62%), by fairs and events (59%) and by trade magazines (42%). The prevailing sales channel is that of company employees (72%) while that of e-commerce (both direct and with other marketplaces) is considered important by 26% of the sample. The interviewed sample highlights how important the services offered to customers are, with a particular focus on after-sales (34%) and pre-sales (28%) assistance.

Cleaning services: CHARACTERISTICS and trends in the sector The year just ended was very difficult for this sector, heavily penalized by the lockout and downsizing of many activities Simone Ciapparelli

he sector analyzed here using Cerved data, provided exclusively for Dimensione Pulito, includes companies that carry out cleaning and disinfection activities and which can also perform activities of disinfestation, rodent control and sanitization services, according to current legislation. Activities related to other types of cleaning are excluded from the analysis, such as cleaning of fabrics and curtains, cleaning with steam and sandblasting, and cleaning of new buildings. Based on the characteristics of the service provided and the technologies used, the sector can be segmented into: cleaning services (95.7% of the cleaning and pest control services market by business area) and pest control, sanitation and rat extermination services (4.3% of the market). The cleaning services can in turn be segmented according to the final reference market: civil cleaning, which includes the activities provided in the areas of the Public Administration, transport, tertiary sector, tourism/ hospitality sector and large-scale distribution, and represents the 63.6% of the total turnover of the sector; hospital cleaning, which accounts for 24%; industrial cleaning (12.4%). (Tab. 1) The Italian cleaning market was worth 6,840 million euros in 2019, confirming a stagnant trend in recent years, showing a variation of -0.3%. The downward trend in prices and the rationalization of costs and services by both public and private demand prevented the turnover from recovering the positive sign.

A TOUGH 2020 FOR THE SECTOR

The year just ended was very complicated for the cleaning industry which, like all other sectors, found itself having to deal with an unexpected emergency, whose future developments are not yet predictable with certainty. 2020 was characterized by a decline in sectoral activity of 5-7%. The most penalized was the civil segment, due

abroad. Within this segment, a great unknown is represented by schools, due to the suspension of activities and the adoption of distance learning. The internalization of cleaning services, entrusted to staff hired as school collaborators, according to what is contained in the 2019 Budget Law, also weighs on the school; this measure involves a downsizing of the activity, with important repercussions on the entire civil segment. The industrial segment saw a moderately contained decline; some companies, such as those belonging to the pharmaceutical and food supply chain, have not stopped their activity and have indeed been favored by a dynamic and growing demand. As for the hospital segment, there was instead an increase in activities, thanks to the growth in demand for sanitation, which experienced a surge in

food sector. Revenues are expected to recover by 2021, but at lower levels than in 2019. The health emergency has led to greater awareness of the importance of services such as cleaning, and their central role in ensuring public health. This could represent, even in the medium term, an opportunity for the sector, resulting in greater attention to the quality of performance and curbing the policy of cuts, which mainly affects some areas of the public.

DEMAND ANALYSIS

It is down, due to the negative trend of the civil segment and, in part, of the industrial one, which the positive trend of the hospital segment is not able to counterbalance. In the area of cleaning and disinfection services, demand is influenced by elements such as the general trend of the ecoApril/2021 |

nomy and consumption, the closure of activities, production downsizing and relocation choices by companies, national economic policy choices. The target of the sector is vast and very articulated, being made up of public entities and private companies and characterized by different peculiarities and dynamics. The public sector is generally characterized by greater stability in demand, but is subject to cuts during crisis periods, resulting in the reduction of some services, such as cleaning. The public client selects suppliers through tenders that meet specific technical requirements, and interfaces with a few consolidated suppliers. The demand from private clients is instead more cyclical: periods of crisis have a negative impact on sectoral demand because, in order to lower costs, companies are inclined to reduce services and or internalize them. Most sectors have basic needs, which the generalist operators on the market can easily meet. Some sectors, such as the health, food and chemical/pharmaceutical sectors, require specific skills, certifications and periodic investments by supplier companies to adapt technological and human resources to their needs. While not causing the closure of cleaning companies, the anti Covid regulations have had a strong impact on them, causing the closure of production and commercial activities considered non-essential, of schools, and the strong limitation of travel by airplanes, trains, ships. On the other hand, the measures aimed at guaranteeing the sanitation of the environments have created business opportunities for sectoral companies.

SUPPLY ANALYSIS

The sector offer is very fragmented, and characterized by a high number of operators, who are distributed throughout the national territory. There are also companies of various types and legal forms, with very low turnover. Smaller and less developed companies, 16

| April/2021

commercially linked to a single-sector and/or single-customer market, are oriented towards a specialized offer, with the development of verticalized skills on certain services. In the provision of services in industrial cleaning, where specific know-how may be required, the level of specialization is a fundamental discriminant. In the healthcare sector, the cleaning service is increasingly complex and integrated; the more structured companies also tend to qualify in areas of activity that are complementary or contiguous to those of cleaning, such as the sterilization of surgical instruments, stretchers, and the distribution of drugs. Cleaning on means of transport also requires developed requirements; the specialization of companies

in this area has been limited in the past by a quasi-monopoly regime by some operators. In recent years, the calling of structured tenders has led many operators to acquire the resources and skills necessary to compete in this demand segment. The creation of alliances and partnerships between operators is widespread, especially in the form of temporary business associations (ATI) and consortia. The use of outsourcing and the application of subcontracting agreements are also widespread. The degree of sectoral concentration is limited, both for cleaning and pest control services. In the area of cleaning services, however, there are differences between the segments: that of industrial cleaning is characterized by a

concentration that does not reach 9%, because many companies are small and specialized in particular markets. Even in the civil sector, the level of concentration remains at very low values (12%). The hospital cleaning area, on the other hand, is more concentrated, with the top four companies accounting for almost 29% of the market. This is because the service offered, especially in the healthcare sector, is increasingly configured as an integrated service and must respond to many requests and needs, such as the integration of the various distribution and organizational logistics processes and the implementation of stricter regulations regarding staff training or environmental protection. The major operators are located on a national scale and have numerous

branches throughout the territory, the medium-sized companies have a patchy distribution and, finally, the smaller ones carry out their activities in a regional or provincial context. (Tab. 2)

OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS FOR THE SECTOR

The widespread application of anti-contagion containment protocols in all major end markets, as well as the growing awareness of the importance that cleaning services play in guaranteeing public health, can open up new business opportunities. Other opportunities derive from the development of Facility Management and Global Service, in addition to the entry into force of the new Procurement Code, which should ensure greater simplification.

Possible threats can be represented by the downsizing of the national production and commercial structure following the pandemic, and by the possible adoption of smart working even after the end of the emergency; the high competition, the processes of “re-internalization” of redundant workers and the policies of cost containment by the public administration may be other elements capable of compromising the health of the compartment. The internalization of cleaning and auxiliary services in schools, as established by the Budget Law 2019, represents a serious threat to cleaning companies in the short to medium term by eliminating an important share of the civil segment market. ■ April/2021 |

T

he conditions for the birth of Synclean occurred in 1974 when Vincenzo Savoldi, who would have founded the company twenty years later, during a trip to New York was struck by seeing an ecological operator cleaning a sidewalk with the smallest sweeper of the time. Back in Italy, Savoldi decided to become part of this market, and founded, together with another partner, a company named Pulimat, which produced professional sweepers based in Guardamiglio, a town in the province of Lodi. This first experience lasted until 1987, at a time when a thriving market was developing in Italy consisting of a myriad of medium-small companies specialized in industrial cleaning machines. Even today, our country is in first place for production volumes in this sector. In 1988 Floorpul was born, which produced sweepers under its own brand and marketed Comac scrubbers, Euromop trolleys and Pulivapor pressure washers.

18

| April/2021

Floorpul in the following years expanded considerably on the domestic and on international markets, facing off the demands of customers, who wished to have, in addition to the machines, also the relative spare parts of the parts most subject to wear. Even today, no machinery manufacturing company is able to satisfy this request.

Edoardo Savoldi, CEO

This would have led Savoldi to decide to enter the spare parts business for industrial cleaning and found, in 1994, Synclean. Today, more than 25 years after its foundation, this firm keeps its initial policy current and unchanged: total availability towards the customer, ability to offer a completely efficient service. Synclean is committed to offering only the best accessories, ensuring the assistance and sales support of a leading company. The proposal is developed through an updated site and constant support to customers, with easy-to-consult information on the entire range of accessories for all the most important world brands of floor cleaners, vacuum cleaners, sweepers, single disc machines and pressure washers, such as discs, brushes, pipes, suction motors and tires. This database, built through years of experience in this field, is achieving great international success, allowing the company to export to 70 countries. In fact, for large machinery manufacturing

What is the PANDEMIC TEACHING US? The resources allocated to Italian public health must be increased and hospital beds for the areas of medical and surgical urgency-emergency, pneumology, infectious diseases and rehabilitation must be restored and increased, in order to continue to provide to the population adequate care for prevalent or emerging pathologies Manuela Stroili and Vincenzo Livia ASUGI of Trieste

ome of us expected it. We didn’t know that this time it was going to be called SARS-CoV-2 and that it would be an RNA virus from China, but we knew it was going to be awful. Between 2019 and 2021, in the world that communicates the data, at least 2.6 million deaths, with a high mortality rate in relation to the resident population, high peaks of patients a day simultaneously hospitalized in intensive care, the saturation of public health services where the number of beds, personnel and training had been reduced to the bone, the overbooking of beds for infectious diseases, pneumology and medicines in hospitals. In 2021 the drastic contraction of activities not essential to survival, the forced isolation of people, the lockdown in cities and mountain villages, the decline in GDP are still ongoing. This new coronavirus is very aggressive and circulates in the air[1], it enters mainly from the airways causing colds, sometimes very serious interstitial pneumonia, but also conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis and other multi-organ injuries. It has been seen in autopsies that it favors the vascular endothelium and causes cellular syncytia[2]. It sur20

vives indefinitely in the environment that surrounds us by lying on any material, and that implies the need for frequent disinfection of all surfaces and objects and frequent washing of hands, which must not touch the face, eyes, hair, skin. Fragments of the virus have also been found in the urban waste waters of Paris, Rome and Turin. The scientific world is dedicating itself to the production of vaccines with different and innovative technologies, which are discussed for their safety in the short, medium and long term. One year after the onset of this new coronavirus in the industrialized world, the search for the most suitable pharmacological therapies, such as monoclonal antibodies, to help survive patients diagnosed in the initial phase of Covid 19 disease has proved to be very complex[3]; the widespread diffusion of tests with swabs to detect the presence of the virus and to search for antibodies against the virus in the blood was slowly progressive. It was very difficult to trace the contacts to activate immediate isolation quarantines and make the dedicated apps work. Why did we expect it? This century has seen a fall in the values of social solidarity, professional ethics, humanitarian reasons in civil life, of a concrete job training suitable for modifying wrong behaviors, and has seen the triumph of a destructive competition pervaded by social and professional envy. In the public health sector, the clearly visible signs were: reduction of resources and hospital beds, salaries that have stopped over the years and are not adequate to the responsibilities of health professionals, reduced propensity to work in groups, unbridled careerism, theft of ideas, mobbing, inattention to personal and environmental hygiene, worrying trends in nosocomial infections, poor ability to carry out concrete complex projects, a serious lack of self-criticism, burnout behaviors with harm to patients by health professionals not supported by ethical values, etc. Despite all this, many doctors, nurses and technicians in the public dedicate themselves as missionaries to their work and study to acquire the new knowledge available and maintain high levels of professionalism, extending the survival of many people. The reduction of resources in Healthcare took place in a period in which the great increase in globalization, trade and workforce exchanges and the phenomena of strong and indiscriminate emigration of populations from less industrialized countries to those with a higher standard of living would have instead at least

required the strengthening of social and health protection and safety systems with an increase in efficient services in public health, in prevention of the spread of new and old infections (SARS-Cov-2, pneumonia, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, etc.) and in hospital emergency areas. In the bibliography that had already been widely foreseen in 2010 (“Various Germs survive on surfaces by infecting people by direct contact or by airborne dispersion: Aspergillus, Cholera, Diphtheria, Enterococci, Molds, Poliomyelitis, Salmonella, Sars, Tbc, etc.”[4]) . Even in the agro-food sector, the control of the health status of personnel involved in the handling of food and beverages has been reduced, with many unreported foodborne infections, giving more importance to work procedures rather than verifying which infectious and diffusive diseases were carried by apparently healthy workers. In fact, we have seen worrying Covid outbreaks in European and American slaughterhouses and in some crops. In this sector it is essential to restore the individual Health Record for each employee with laboratory, radiological and swab tests to be performed before the worker, often a foreigner, is placed in the production cycles to ensure the safety of food for consumers and occasionally sample the food produced or to be administered[5]. Perhaps by testing the many immigrant workers and workers not included in the agrofood and catering world we would identify the new viruses and microorganisms first and prevent the next pandemics that await us around the corner.

ACTIONS IN OUR LIFE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

We must try to eradicate the SARS-CoV-2 virus (and at the same time many other microorganisms...) from all places of life and work with environmental disinfection techniques similar to those used by the Chinese, techniques so far used very little, if not in the homes of rest of Bergamo with the help of the Russian military. If we look at the environment that surrounds us with everyone’s eyes, we see in the cities dirty streets and sidewalks, trap doors full of waste, dirty buildings, mechanical brushes designed to clean the streets that push the dust into the open grocery stores, while the unload of the waste makes the passersby breathe the fumes and dust that come out of the bags, seas full of plastics, rooms open to the public so full of goods on display that frequent cleaning is really tiring. viruses, bacteria, molds. They must be removed and disposed of at times when people do not normally pass and commercial activities aimed at the public are not open. Territorial and hospital hygiene have also become a very difficult topic to investigate in the professional practice of both the Prevention Departments and the hospital management, also for the arguments set out above, adding that tenders that outsource the envi-

ronmental cleaning and sanitization interventions lengthen the inspection times and are psychologically disempowering. The daily interventions of environmental sanitization are rather obsolete, as the simple manual washing with rags and detergents for the most part of floors and tables is not enough to reach all the holes in which the germs and biofilms nest. Probably, it is necessary to introduce innovative technologies that obtain radical sani-

tization of environments and create aerosols that are competitive with those that nest viruses, competitive aerosols capable of eradicating microorganisms everywhere from living and working environments and from short or long stays of patients and fragile hosts who are not self-sufficient or are immunosuppressed. This method seems to have worked in China and in nursing homes in Bergamo so far. The same can be said for the conditioning systems of hospitals and buildings that house frail patients or elderly people; the management of these mostly air circulation systems is also often outsourced, with less participation by the employees of the technical services. How often are hospital air purification filters replaced? How often are air conditioners cleaned? Are the interventions effective? Are the microbial loads that we actually breathe in the hospital rooms and are deposited on the surfaces of the rooms where the guests live ever controlled with sedimentation plates or with more advanced technology? We must devote more time and care to these activities, whether directly managed or outsourced through contracts. What time slot does the teaching of Hygiene and Infectious Diseases occupy in the basic university training of doctors, nurses and health technicians? Why are we so afflicted by nosocomial infection? Because of laziness, corruption, lack of basic training and some system-structural deficiency? Ensuring personal and environmental daily hygiene for a non self-sufficient patient is very tiring and complex: clothing, person, hair, nails, secretions and body fluids are entrusted to a health worker who must also take care not to become contaminated with the subject with whom he finds himself in a condition of daily symbiosis. Hence the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) possibly disposable to be used by both, on all occasions of contact.

In the case of respiratory diseases, the usefulness of face masks has still proved difficult to understand for the general population, because viruses and bacteria are invisible objects and their presence and ability to spread tend to be underestimated in the air we breathe. There are still deniers who wear a mask under their nose or chin.

EVERYONE NEEDS A MASK

Since the appearance of the first known cases of severe Covid-19 pneumonia, clinical evidence indicated that the virus was mainly found with the oral-pharyngeal swab in the nose and throat, so it was very likely that the virus entered the mouth and nose and descended in the respiratory tract where it causes severe interstitial pneumonia.

24

| April/2021

Since the SARS-CoV-2 Virus is an “object” with matter, even if its dimensions are not perceptible to the human eye, a physical barrier such as a mask that covers the nose and mouth creates an obstacle to the entry of the virus into our body, preventing contagion and disease. Given the microscopic dimensions, unfortunately the virus can also enter the eyes and therefore wearing a pair of glasses protects us more. A crucial point is the size of the holes in the tissue of the masks: it must have a smaller diameter than the virus, like the p 100 and FFP3 masks. However, these should be without the front valve/filter, because this valve allows the passage of viruses and therefore does not protect other people. Since the virus travels in the air mostly

carried by droplets of saliva, that are way larger than the virus, the FFP2 masks are also quite protective, again without a valve/filter for people who do not treat Covid patients. The masks must also be touched, during and after use, only on the rubber bands, because the fabric of the mask is the most infectable part. The Chinese had also reported the presence of healthy carriers of the virus that went unnoticed among the population, infecting it. This means that anyone around us can have the Virus Sars - CoV-2, without knowing it, and can infect other people at any time; but if we all wear a clean mask on the nose and mouth we protect ourselves from unconscious infections and reduce the circulation of the virus[9,10,11]. For these reasons in the hospital in Trieste, since the beginning of the pandemic, we have begun to urge all workers to wear a protective mask on their face, even when the WHO and the ISS advised against it for the general population and for healthcare workers not active in Covid wards, excluding administrative staff widely present in healthcare. In the West, an increasing number of viruses and bacteria are circulating in our dusts which, entering our body from the nose and mouth, cause many respiratory tract infections. These germs are also deposited on all surfaces that we touch with our hands and with our clothes, contaminating ourselves. For this reason it is very important to wash the hands well and frequently, not to touch the face and immediately take off and wash at least the clothes worn during the workday. In hospitals and clinics, where often clinically unknown patients come, it is even more essential that the personnel in contact with the public wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as headphones, goggles, masks, visors, gloves, gowns or disposable coveralls if in the Covid area, and overshoes.

H

H ealthcare

THE BEST USE OF PPE AND MEDICAL DEVICES

The instrumentation used by healthcare personnel on Covid patients (but also on all others in general), i.e. medical devices such as phonendoscopes, pressure gauges, pulse oximeters, thermometers, etc., must be carefully disinfected between one patient and the next and before putting it away at the end of its use. It was important to motivate the personnel on the constant use of PPE, through a training focused on their “barrier” effect. The virus is a physical object that moves in the air and on surfaces, if there is an obstacle between it and the person the virus does not pass, but stops and settles on the obstacle. This obstacle, however, represented by masks, gloves, visors, gowns, dresses, overshoes, must be removed very carefully because it is contaminated and can infect. Therefore contaminated PPE (we must absolutely consider them all contaminated by the Sars CoV-2 virus, as well as by other respiratory viruses) must be eliminated with extreme care, in an environment classified as “dirty”, before moving into an environment classified as “clean”. They must be placed in a bag for infected waste and consequently eliminated by incineration. A shower for the complete washing of the body and hair of the person must be done before going out into external activities, classified as low or zero contamination. We emphasize that on returning home it is necessary to immediately take off the clothes used during the workday and wash them with the addition of disinfectant to normal detergents, as well as leaving the shoes in a place where they can’t contaminate the home. To regulate, clarify and oblige these behaviors, protocols and procedures for compliance with hygiene rules and the “physical barrier” function of PPE have been drawn up. 26

MAINTENANCE ACTIONS IN BUILDINGS

Since the virus is dispersed in the environment, it’s necessary to make a greater number of disinfection interventions of air conditioning systems and filter replacement, frequent disinfection of access corridors, rooms, bathrooms, common areas and beds, lockers and tables, telephones, television systems and computers using traditional technologies of environmental sanitation (surface detergents) and hydrogen peroxide, silver or ozone through nebulization that we hope will be introduced in routine use to reach all surfaces that are difficult to wash by hand (ceilings, walls, curtains, cabinets, televisions…). The guarantee of the effectiveness of the environmental disinfection systems not only against SARS CoV-2, but also against other germs that survive well on surfaces (Clostridium difficile, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, E.Coli, Staphylococci, Aspergillus, etc.) is given only by controls with Petri dishes[6] or other technologies that detect the real and not presumed microbial load. The control of the residual environmental charge after disinfection interventions must be carried out at least monthly.

PLANNING ACTIONS OF PLANTS IN HEALTHCARE AND CIVIL BUILDINGS

The air conditioning systems in hospitals must guarantee the negative pressure of the rooms with patients with respiratory diseases, in order not to contaminate the contiguous environments, as it should happen in the infectious wards. The extracted air must be eliminated outside with filters to be changed frequently to also reduce the contamination of outdoor spaces. All systems must ensure the healthiness of each environment, with any expected number of air changes, in relation to the air introduced into the rooms and common paths, with sampling to verify the real existing microbial loads[6]. The air circulation channels must provide for non-cross-contamination of the environments, between one department and another or with clinics and offices. The return of water heating in radiators or new heating technologies that prevent the circulation of air that is always potentially infected must be seriously considered in the design of new hospitals, hotels and community facilities.

THE REAL TRAINING

Our call for better training on organization, teamwork and control issues continues with the final aim of allowing adequate treatment and care for all of us, including the elderly, as enshrined in the principles of our Constitution and our NHS, in which we still believe. Courses of deontology and professional ethics, which have been mistakenly supplanted by those on budget, productivity, negotiations and inter-professional communication, are to be restored everywhere.

val of elderly patients or those with multiple associated pathologies. The resources allocated to Italian public health must be increased and hospital beds for the areas of medical and surgical urgency-emergency, pneumology, infectious diseases and rehabilitation must be restored and increased, not only for the Covid pan-

demic, but also for being able to continue treating properly prevailing or emerging pathologies in the Italian population which so far has seen an increase in life expectancy at birth, thanks to the great health planning interventions of the last century, the wide availability of hospital care and healthy lifestyles. ■

CONCLUSION

The great pandemics (polio, diphtheria, plague, cholera, smallpox, Spanish fever, MERS, SARS and flu) in the past centuries have induced, in addition to the creation of vaccines, the introduction of the professional figure of the Provincial Doctor and the Public Hygiene Services dedicated to verification and protection of the state of health of the general population, and the monitoring of the effects of pollution on the health of residents. These Doctors wrote great texts and Hygiene Regulations that also intervened on the construction and housing methods to avoid people living in unhealthy environments[15,16]. The spread of hospitals with an adequate number of beds have represented the stronghold of Italian health, guaranteeing the survi-

The power of STEAM

S

everal studies demonstrate the effectiveness of heat in eliminating viruses and bacteria. From this premise the research of STI - Steam Industry and the offer of products that meet the most varied cleaning and sanitizing needs starts. Laura Passuello’s experience. The ongoing pandemic forces us to rethink our way of life. Cleaning and sanitizing are of utmost importance in dealing with the emergency. WHO itself reiterated the effectiveness of heat in eliminating viruses. Furthermore, a careful study indicates that a temperature of 71°C is recommended to kill most viruses. With this in mind, the professional products of STI - Steam Industry offer the right solution. The company was founded in 2009 from the twenty-year experience of the Passuello family in the steam cleaning sector.

What is your commitment today at the helm of the company?

“We have treasured past experience, inheriting the commitment and dedication that has always characterized our work, at the same time we have made continuous innovations and

improvements. In a historical moment characterized by an invisible virus, STI is a safe and reliable partner to eliminate and contain the problem. One of the most effective methods of killing germs, bacteria and viruses is steam. Our professional products have a temperature in the boiler ranging from 160°C to 185°C according to the power of the machine, there is a natural thermal drop at the point of release of the steam but the temperature is well above the recommended 71°C. The total and complete sanitization of every environment and surface through the use of steam at regular intervals therefore helps not to spread viruses”.

What are the advantages of using steam?

“Steam is ecological, it is a natural element that allows you to thoroughly clean different surfaces without using detergent. It sanitizes the environment, eliminating mites, bacteria, molds and germs, thanks to the high temperatures reached. Clinical tests show that a 5 second steam flow at 140°C can totally eliminate the bacterial load. In addition, it involves less effort for the user because it completely dissolves dirt, even the most difficult, without having to scrub hard.

Furthermore, the steam flow manages to reach points that would be impossible to clean with standard equipment. All this translates into a saving of time and money because cleaning is faster and no detergents are used”.

STI - Steam Industry strongly believes in made in Italy. Could you briefly tell us about the range you offer to the market?

“We currently produce and serve two macro areas: one linked to domestic use, the other meets the most varied cleaning and sanitizing needs of the professional world. The domestic line is a complete range, as it is made up of both steam-only products and steam&vacuum products. Their uses are manifold as they can be used to clean and sanitize every room and surface of the house, but also of premises and companies. STI’s range of professional machines is divided into two lines: Gaiser (steam-only products) and Comby (steam&vacuum products). The areas of use are varied: from the food industry to catering, from hotels to cleaning in public transport, from the mechanical industry to healthcare (hospitals, medical, dental and veterinary practices) “. ■ April/2021 |

HYGIENE during pandemic: are consumers AWARE of its importance? Although most people consider hygiene as basic, there is still confusion regarding the difference between this term and the concept of cleanliness Edited by Simone Ciapparelli

32

| April/2021

A

.I.S.E., the International Association of Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products, and IFH, the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene, presented Developing household hygiene to meet 21st century needs, a collaborative industry/academia report that emphasizes the fundamental role of hygiene in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The report promotes targeted hygiene and its benefits, and the proper use of cleaning products and disinfectants to enable good hygiene practices as a routine part of normal daily life as well as during a public health crisis. The report also offers an interesting overview of the idea that European consumers have of the concept of hygiene, based on pan-European data collected on approximately 4,500 consumers in February, prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe, and June 2020. In light of the ensuing pandemic, the A.I.S.E. board also agreed to repeat this part of the survey in June 2020 so as to establish whether, and to what extent, attitudes and understandings about hygiene may have changed due to the extensive government messaging about hygiene in the period March to May 2020. The objectives of this survey were to understand how consumers perceive the importance of hygiene, find out whether and to what extent consumers’ actions are driven by their perception of risk, determine what consumers understand about hygiene and its role in the prevention of infection in home

and everyday life and how this differs from cleanliness, and lastly uncover whether hygiene promotion during the early part of the pandemic modified consumers’ understanding of a risk-based approach to hygiene.

SURVEY RESULTS

Consumers are very aware and concerned (83-96% across the 5 regions) about protecting themselves and their families against infection by practicing good hygiene. Increased awareness of the importance of hygiene as a result of the pandemic was limited (from 87 to 89%) but not unexpected since high awareness was already indicated by the February poll. Moreover, European citizens increasingly recognise the need for products to clean their homes and workplaces in a safe, efficient and effective manner. One of the key things highlighted by the survey, is the extent to which consumers have become confused about what hygiene means and how it differs from cleanliness. The February poll showed that whereas a good proportion (58-68% across the 5 regions) agreed that hygiene is more than cleaning, it is about protection of health, a significant number (15-20%) believed that hygiene and cleaning are the same thing, whilst some (1628%) associate hygiene with the need to use a disinfectant. Data from the June poll suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic had little or no impact on these beliefs. The results of the February poll suggest that consumers are also unclear about how cleaning and disinfectant pro-

ducts work to eliminate microbes from risk surfaces in order to break the chain of infection transmission, and that the mode of action of cleaning is significantly different from the killing and inactivating action of disinfectants. When consumers were questioned about how they thought disinfectants and cleaners worked in risk situations to reduce contamination on surfaces, data shows that across European regions only 37% of consumers agreed that “Cleaners get rid of bacteria etc. by removing them from surfaces, disinfectants kill the bacteria etc. on surfaces”; 17% held the belief that cleaners and disinfectants do the same thing. There seems little awareness that, if properly applied, both processes have the capability to reduce contamination to a safe level and thereby break the chain of infection. It must be however considered that consumers’ confusion about the terms cleaning and hygiene and how the action of cleaning products differs from that of disinfectants, may, to an extent, have reduced the value of the poll. The dictionary definition of the term hygiene is “the protection of health” which includes protection against infection. Whilst there is consistent agreement that cleaning means removal of visible dirt, the term cleaning is also widely used as a generic term for any process used to reduce harmful microbes to a safe level. The data presented here illustrates that for key moments such as handling food, using the toilet, coughing, sneezing and caring for pets, there was good risk awareness and conApril/2021 |

sumers acted accordingly by washing their hands; 90% of the respondents always/often wash the hands after using the toilet, and 59% thinks that not washing them after going to the toilet poses a high risk of causing infection. In some cases, for example routine cleaning of general surfaces such as kitchen and bathroom floors, normally considered low risk, there was substantial overestimation of risk which corresponded with an inappropriate use of disinfectants. When the poll was repeated in June 2020, results indicated some increase in the number of people who recognised actions that were risky, but overall perception of risk and behaviour remained largely the same (underestimation of risk in some situations and overestimation of risks in others). In view of the strong messaging about the need to “wash hands frequently”, the increase in numbers of people who agreed “not washing

their hands at key moments” was risky and acted accordingly was surprisingly small. Moreover, there was only a relatively small increase in perception of risk associated with sneezing into ones’ hands (80 up to 82%). More important, although there was a relative growth rate of + 10% in those reporting that they washed their hands (“always” or “often”) after sneezing into them, this still remained relatively low at 66%. Results of the February poll show that across Europe, 78% of people said that they used a product that kills or gets rid of bacteria and other organisms such as a disinfectant, an antibacterial, or a disinfectant bleach. About this topic, there were variations between regions with 60% in the Nordics confirming their use of disinfectants, rising up to 96% in Southern Europe. A slightly bigger proportion of the population indicated that they were using such products in June 2020. Those consu-

mers who used disinfectants in their homes were then questioned about the situations in which they would use them and about 10 different situations which ranged from critical control points associated with the 9 key moments for hygiene, which would be considered as highest risk to those generally considered low risk. Again, the poll results indicated overestimation of risk in some situations and underestimation in others. Medium to high usage was recorded in situations deemed as high risk (e.g. cleaning toilet and bathroom hand contact surfaces, or food contact surfaces), but in other situations regarded as high risk (cleaning a cloth/ sponge/pad used to clean surfaces or a baby’s changing mat) relatively few consumers considered there was need to use a disinfectant. In relation to usage of disinfectants, as found in the February poll, the June poll suggests that use of disinfectant products was not well correlated with the concept of Targeting Hygiene (see text box) 34

| April/2021

procedures at moments most likely to be associated with spread of harmful microbes. In all situations there was some increase in usage of disinfectants in June compared with February, but again use of disinfectant products was not well correlated with the concept of Targeting Hygiene procedures at moments most likely to be associated with spread of harmful microbes. The largest increases were in situations generally considered as low risk.

WHAT IS TARGETED HYGIENE?

Targeted Hygiene is focusing hygiene practices at the times and in the places that matter most to break the chain of infection and reduce the risk of exposure to harmful microbes. This contrasts significantly with historical approaches equating hygiene with eradicating dirt and maintaining visual cleanliness, incorrectly regarded as the main source of harmful microbes. Although the Targeted Hygiene concept is now widely accepted by hygiene stakeholders it has become apparent that the population at large does not understand what it means in practice i.e. that it does not mean “obliterating germs from risky places”, but that it does mean “cleaning at the times or “moments” when there is most risk of spread of germs”. IFH has identified nine key moments during our daily lives when hygiene really matters to break the chain of infection. Although they are not the only moments when hygiene practices are needed it is argued that, if we routinely practice hygiene at each of these moments, this will deal with most of the risk of spread of infection in our homes. The nine key moments include these activities: ■ During food handling ■ Whilst eating with fingers ■ Using the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy ■ Coughing, sneezing and nose blowing ■ Touching surfaces frequently touched by other people ■ Handling and laundering of clothing, towels and bed linens etc. ■ Caring for domestic animals ■ Handling and disposing of rubbish ■ Caring for an infected family member During these nine moments, hygiene measures need to focus on those surfaces that are most likely to spread harmful microbes. Those critical surfaces include notably the hands, hand and food contact surfaces and cloths/sponge/pads used to clean surfaces.

As regards to the hygiene outside the home, the June poll, compared with that of an identical polling carried out as part of the 2017 A.I.S.E survey, suggested increased concern about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene issues outside the home when using public transport (77-83%), with 43% of citizens ‘fully agreeing’ with this statement (i.e. a relative increase of +38%). Similarly, good cleaning and hygiene standards in shops and supermarkets are highly appreciated (79%), as well as clean offices spaces (78%). People also expressed a desire to know more about the importance of (and standards used for) ensuring cleanliness and hygiene outside the home (67% in June 2020 vs. 62% in 2017). Increased awareness of risk outside the home was also indicated by the finding that there was a 7 point increase in those who believed failing to wash their hands when arriving home is a significant risk and acted accordingly (80% to 93%). In order to improve consumer hygiene behaviour in a manner which leads to more effective and sustainable hygiene, we must first understand why consumer actions fail to align with Targeted Hygiene, if they fail because they have limited understanding of the concept that hygiene means breaking the chain of infection, or rather because their understanding of risk is mostly determined by childhood education and their fear of dirt and germs. ■ Source: A.I.S.E. & IFH (2021) - Developing Household Hygiene to meet 21st century needs April/2021 |

The role of SURFACES in the SPREADING of MICROBES

Identifying the surfaces that may represent a greater infectious risk allows us to minimize the possibility of being infected by interacting with them Edited by Simone Ciapparelli

I

ndividuating the surfaces that are most likely to cause further spread of microbes from the source such that someone is exposed and infected is part of the concept of Targeting Hygiene; the procedure used to identify these surfaces, which are called critical control points, follows the standard method for risk assessment: Infection Risk = Hazard x Exposure. Hazard represents the probability of contamination with harmful microbes at that moment; the exposure represents the probability of subsequent exposure to these microbes. The hands and frequently touched surfaces, like door and tap handles, keyboards, TV remotes and shared mobile devices are always critical points; cleaning of hands is particularly important after using the toilet, handling food, coughing or sneezing. During handling and preparing food, are also critical points the food contact surfaces, which must be cleaned after preparing raw foods such as meat and poultry, or before preparing ready to eat foods. Also clothing, towels, bed linens can be the cause of infection, although the risk associated with these surfaces is normally lower compared to surfaces such as hands. Regular laundering can contribute to preventing

36

| April/2021

spread of microbes, particularly where there is someone who is infected or who is more vulnerable to infection. Sponge and cloths used to clean surfaces have a high risk of becoming a hazard and also have a high risk of transmitting these microbes to humans. These items need to be cleaned after their use, to ensure that they don’t spread pathogens. Floors, walls, surfaces and furnitures which are not hand or food contact surfaces are considered as low risk based on data which shows that we do not have frequent exposure to them and that pathogenic organisms are only rarely isolated on these surfaces. This means that the routine process of keeping floors and furniture visibly clean contributes little to preventing exposure to harmful microbes during our daily lives, as compared with hygiene practices carried out at critical moments. The analysis of infection risk related to the different types of surfaces allows us to construct a rule of thumb that classifies the surfaces on the basis of their capacity to become vehicles of infection. However, the rule of thumb is not a constant; for example, floors are considered as low risk, but this risk will increase where there is a crawling baby on the floor who may become exposed, or where certain groups may pray or eat on the floor. To contain this risk, the relevant hygiene product must be used immediately before using the floor for such purposes.

BREAKING THE CHAIN OF INFECTION

This is another important part of Targeting Hygiene, and consists in using hygiene procedures on critical surfaces at key moments to reduce the level of harmful microbes which might be present, to a safe level. This means that in order to avoid the infection, we need to reduce the number of bacterial cells or particles on surfaces to a level below the infectious dose. In fact, in order to become infected, we need to be expo-

sed to an infectious dose, namely a sufficient number of viral particles or bacterial cells. The minimum infectious dose may vary depending on the type of virus/bacteria. Regardless of whether it is being applied to hands, surfaces, fabrics or in the air, there are two ways of reducing microbe levels: by physical removal, or by killing the microbes. The former consists in using soap or detergent-based cleaning (cleaning followed by rinsing under clean running water) or dry wiping to remove the microbes.

The latter consists in using a disinfectant product or hand disinfectant or a process, such as heating, that kills or inactivates microbes in place, without moving them away. In household situations, these processes may be used alone, in combination or sequentially. For example, the cleaning of surfaces can be followed by disinfection, and heat inactivation can be combined with mechanical or chemical action to

detach microbes from fabrics, followed by a rinse cycle to remove microbial contaminants into the household waste system (e.g. laundry and dishwashing cycles). Although it is still believed by many that for domestic situations the risks of infection are relatively low, recent studies suggest otherwise. These studies show that wiping a surface with detergent, without subsequent rinsing, transfers contamination to the cloth and hands, which is then spread to other surfaces; in this situation, cleaning and disinfection are needed to break the chain of infection. That is also the reason why amongst health professionals there is increasing acceptance that disinfectant products are required in Targeted Hygiene situations such as: for targeted decontamination of surfaces which cannot be rinsed under running water at risk moments; for leaning of hands and surfaces in situations where a household member is ill and is more vulnerable to infection by a lower infectious dose; for the cleaning of surfaces where there is risk of spread of viruses which have a very low infectious dose; for the cleaning of cloths, sponge or pads used to clean surfaces after use (microbes can become strongly attached to fabric surfaces and are not sufficiently removed by detergent based cleaning and rinsing alone); for disinfection of the hands in situations where there is no access to soap and running water. ■ Source: A.I.S.E. & IFH (2021) - Developing Household Hygiene to meet 21st century needs April/2021 |

UN Sustainable Development GOALS: a priority for the European cleaning sector The SDGs are designed to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. EFCI supports strongly the international community’s commitment to this policy programme Edited by Francesca Leone

T

he Sustainable Development Goals are 17 objectives contained in a great action plan on which the governments of the 193 UN member countries have found an agreement in September 2015. Countries are committed to achieving them by 2030. The Global Goals continue the work of the Millennium Development Goals that preceded them, and represent common objectives on all issues considered important for development: the fight against poverty, the elimination of hunger and the fight against climate change. These objectives are called Global Goals because they concern all countries and all individuals: no one is excluded, nor should be left behind. The SDGs and their objectives are applicable in both developing and developed countries and recognize environmental sustainability policies as essential elements for human development, alongside social, economic and political ones. The SDGs recognize the key role that companies can play in achieving them by applying creativity and innovation to solve development challenges. Setting common goals encourages gover38

nments, companies, research centers and society as a whole to act globally for their realization, gathering and making available a great variety of forces, knowledge and resources. This allows to build committed alliances for more prosperous, more just and more equitable societies. Furthermore, between now and 2030 we can check our progress; Global Goals, in fact, set precise and measurable goals in terms of results. Sustainable Development means sharing ideas and knowledge, joining forces and working together to improve everyone’s life by respecting and protecting the planet, avoiding to deteriorate or destroy its resources, respecting those who will come after us. António Guterres, head of the United Nations, described the current pandemic as an “unprecedented wake-up call”, revealing how urgent it is to complete the 2030 Agenda. The recovery plan will also offer us a way forward, according to the European Commission, out of the crisis and will lay the foundations for a modern and more sustainable Europe. The SDGs and their goals have been relaunched as part of the global response to COVID-19.

EFCI’S ROLE AND CONTRIBUTION

EFCI (European Cleaning and Facility Services Industry) fully adheres to the objectives of the SDGs and in particular those in the areas of health, hygiene, sanitation, maintenance of urban spaces, quality employment and equal opportunities, which members and companies they represent have long helped to achieve. EFCI gives its contribution to the improvement of access to safe and effective healthcare services; especially in healthcare, professional cleaning is essential to preserve human health, giving to these services the possibility to maintain the highest standards in hygiene through professionally implemented cleaning and sanitization operations using recommended protocols and products. The association is committed to improve the access to adequate and equitable sanitation for all and to increase the efficiency of water use. EFCI actively engages with its members, European institutions, civil society and others to strengthen the partnership

for sustainable development. Through its active participation in the European social dialogue and other forums, such as the European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work or the European Ecolabelling Board, EFCI ensures that the views and experience of the sector are taken into account in all policy initiatives that are planned to achieve the SDGs. Regarding the rights of workers, the association contributes to the achievement of the promotion of a safe, inclusive working environment, the promotion of full employment and the protection of the well-being of the employees. Another objective set is to reduce the number of young people without jobs, education or training;. it should be noted that the industrial cleaning and facilities services sector is an inclusive sector, with 72% of its +4.1 million employees in Europe being women and 30% having a migrant background. Other priorities as regards employment, are the commitment to promote occupational health and safety and non-discrimination; support the upskilling of workers through the SK-Clean project; collaborate with the European Youth Guarantee and promote the sector as a valid and credible career option for young people and

the unemployed. Promoting the social, political and economic inclusion of all, as well as ensuring equal opportunities and adopting policies and practices to achieve greater equality, are absolutely priority activities for the present and for the future. EFCI is committed to the fight against undeclared work and unfair competition and promotes social dialogue, procurement based on quality and the importance of skills and professionalism in the sector. In addition to guaranteeing quality employment, in fact, the cleaning sector has shown that it is committed to creating jobs and integrating workers into the labor market, and for this reason it deserves to be exploited to the fullest. The EFCI also considers having access to safe and inclusive green and public spaces another very important aspect, as well as the reducing of the environmental impact of cities. The cleaning sector plays a key role in improving the quality of urban environments and contributing to new models of urban development, by ensuring access to clean, hygienic and functional green and public spaces. To this end, the EFCI supports the industry in encouraging buyers to choose service offerings based on more sustainable cleaning protocols and operations. ■ April/2021 |

MARKETING

In times of crisis and post-crisis, customers choose the best professionals. To be the best, it is necessary to earn their trust and possess Relational Intelligence Fabrizio Pirovano

Marco Monti

Don’t ever say “I DON’T HAVE TIME”

I

n times of crisis and post-crisis, customers choose the best professionals. To be the best, it is necessary to earn their trust and possess Relational Intelligence

Today, being able to say “I don’t have time” is an enormous luxury. Given the current situation, most likely in the end there will not be “less” for everyone, but there will be “more” for those who know how to be ready. Some may even enjoy the advantage of having fewer competitors. And if after the first period of darkness you were able to sow well, today the fruits are likely to rot on the shelves if not cared for very carefully.

REASSURE YOUR CUSTOMERS

And with this premise, we reiterate that being able to afford not to have time to invest in training, communication and targeted strategies of visibility and reassurance, today, is a true privilege. 40

| April/2021

What are the most frequent problematic feelings customers experience these days? We can summarize them briefly as follows: 1. Customers are more impatient than ever. 2. Customers are angrier than ever. 3. Customers are more afraid than ever. 4. Customers are more discouraged than ever. 5. Customers are more demanding than ever. For translating these five points into concrete actions that can change things for the better, we must establish a relationship of trust. Clients must have blind faith in you to be able to entrust their work in your hands, taking it out of the hands of those who cannot express the same trust at the demanding levels that the current time demands.

HOW TO BE THE BEST

From our point of view, the best are those who manage to attract customer trust in a timely, reassuring and quality way. That is: the best are those who possess an extraordinary Relational Intelligence. Today, professionals who know how to exploit it will be a step forward; those who do not know its existence will be part of those who will have a hard life. Because people will behave the same way we do in all post-crisis moments: they will turn to the best. It doesn’t matter what profession you do. Are you one of the best? You are ahead. Are you part of the “so-so”? You are in trouble. Whatever your specific occupation, your role, your position are, you are in the showcase of the market. A tired market, legitimately worried and intolerant, which claims to have everything immediately, but finds it difficult to give anything.

Do you have the most exclusive product in the industry with a unique worldwide patent that you can present right now? Great! You will make a lot of money. No problem. Have you developed a new sales methodology that manages to capture even customers who don’t know they want to be captured? Great! You will make a lot of money. No problem. Do you have a financial plan that is so solid that allows you to give away non-repayable material to everyone until the end of the pandemic? Great! You will make a lot of friends. No problem. Conversely, you have no alternative: those who know you will have to talk about you, indicating you as the “best” in your specific sector, the most “reliable” in your area. “How much better”, are you probably wondering? It depends.

HOW MUCH BETTER?

We heard a guy ask the tennis teacher if four or five lessons would be enough to sign up for a tournament and go

through at least two rounds. He was afraid of trying too hard, evidently. However, the goal was not to become the best ever, he was aware that to participate in the Wimbledon final it would take at least a dozen lessons. You decide the commitment you want to put into it. But if even a child understands that to practice a sport, even if only at an amateur level, you need more than “four or five lessons”, it is natural to wonder how much effort is necessary to practice it as a professional. And you, that sport called work, do you practice it as professionals? If you have the ability to enroll yourself and the company you work for in the “best” group, this increasingly complicated situation can become an opportunity to stand out. Are you thinking that we are putting some pressure on you? Not even by idea. If you don’t have time to deal with this, then you can wait for the period to pass. It would be a real luxury and, if you can afford it, it is an enviable choice.

Will it pass? Certainly yes (we hope and we are confident). Will everything be as before for everyone? Certainly not. Again no. That’s why we advise you not to stop, but to think about how to act.

FINDING THE SOLUTION

All the vices, excuses and justifications for not doing and for not deepening and all the various “I don’t have time” now, like it or not, will come to a head and will be knots that will have to be untangled from a single concept: bending over backwards to keep your business safe; which means, at the same time, to secure oneself. “You win as a team or you lose individually” said Al Pacino in the movie Any Given Sunday. It is also true in football, obviously. Today it is necessary, as never before, to stop postponing and develop Relational Intelligence, that is the branch of intelligence that allows you to capitalize on the potential of empathic connection with the interlocutors. In recent months, as a trainer and coach, we have worked incessantly (obviously remotely), and with excellent results, with our clients on this issue. We point this out for the sole purpose of underlining that there are solutions and not just acquittals. We share a little secret with you: your customers can always, and legitimately, tell you no... When, on the other hand, will they say yes? Only when he intimately perceives that changing his point of view from no to yes is really worth it. When will it really be worth it to them? When you, as a person, capture their needs and feelings at such a deep level that they create an unexpected trust that solves the five problems we listed at the beginning of this article. Never before has “not having time” been a luxury for a few. Never before has “not working on the RIR Index” (Relational Intelligence Rate) a luxury for a few. Never before has it been a luxury for a few to get on a war footing to “boast the same claims as your customers”. Starting at least now is the only advice we would like to give you again. Change to change. That’s all it is. ■ April/2021 |

Looking to the FUTURE with CONFIDENCE by Cristina Cardinali and Loredana Vitulano

D

espite the difficulties generated by the Coronavirus epidemic, Italian professional cleaning companies still look to the future with confidence. The green economy becomes a categorical imperative for enterprises in the sector engaged in a great productive effort at the service of cleaning. The lockdown imposed by Covid-19 has created a situation of heavy uncertainty which, however, has left no room for despair. In fact, we have grasped in the industrialists the will and the ability to react with determination to the inevitable phase of commercial stagnation. With the strong need for full disinfection and sanitation of surfaces, the emergency has certainly led to problems in terms of production, but also development opportunities. With the highest need for surface disinfection, the sanitary and hygienic emergency that has emerged both in Italy and at a global level, the scrubber drier certainly appears destined to confirm more than ever its role as queen of mechanized cleaning. The sweeper undoubtedly shares the scepter of “queen” of mechanized cleaning, along with the scrubbing machine. A truly precious tool, which allows cleaning large surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, with excellent results. Italian manufacturing companies of single disc machines are looking especially abroad, from where encouraging signs of recovery are coming. The pandemic has prompted the population to pay more attention to hand hygiene. The resulting emergency has

42

therefore brought to the fore a segment of professional cleaning that has assumed an increasingly significant social and economic weight within the sector: the one represented by soap/ paper dispensers and hand dryers. The paper segment, for domestic and sanitary use, has taken on a very significant weight in the professional cleaning sector with an increase that has been, in terms of turnover, satisfactory overall.

The equipment sector has overall well resisted the most delicate phase of the Covid emergency, once again recording a positive development trend. The chemical industry has not directly suffered the effects of the lockdown, precisely because of the specific nature of its offer, largely converted to the production of sanitizers and recognized as an essential activity for the country. ■

GAIA 50 B INOX AISI 304 The new update on our model GAIA 50B which is now with a full inox stainless steel chassis. We know that machine washers suffer after a few years of using obvious signs of corrosion. This is due to the fact that the machines work perennially with very aggressive water and detergent and it is no coincidence that after a few years the owner has to spend money on the maintenance and restoration of the machines. For this reason, 4CleanPro today produces all its stainless-steel models and all the top-quality components.

Monitoring and controls in SANITIZATION Sanitizing involves a series of coordinated interventions, among which there are high-level cleaning, disinfection and disinfestation Livio Marossi (*) and Graziano Dassi

HIGH LEVEL CLEANING

How to measure the results of an intervention? The criteria can be summarized in two parts: the first is represented by visual inspections, the second by instrumental investigations. Visual inspections imply an excellent experience of the verifier who must have a checklist consistent with the contract, an evaluation scale that indicates the level of cleanliness with a defined formula that triggers any alarm. The upside is the possibility of an overall view, the downside is the subjectivity of judgment. The instrumental investigations are based on the use of swabs that, when swiped on a given surface, remove the dirt that is not anchored and, by comparing it to a gray scale, allow the data to be transformed into a number. This numerical estimate can also be obtained with an electronic instrument, the spectrophotometer, or with a less precise spectrocolorimeter (there are also portable ones); these technologies are not easy to interpret since the data detected is limited to very small surfaces that can be measured in a few µm2. Alternatively, there are colorimetric methods whereby the pad is placed in a reagent which, through a given color, makes known the level of organic dirt present on the surface. More sophisticated is the use of the luminometer which, through the measurement of a 48

| April/2021

light intensity caused by the reaction that the ATP removed from the pad emits upon contact with an enzyme, the luciferase. Obviously, the luminometer does not detect inorganic dirt, as ATP is a chemical molecule present only in bacterial or somatic cells. This is not valid for anchored dirt which requires the use of solvents with increasing polarity in order to be able to dissolve and remove the dirt fixed to the surface by time. An aspect that is difficult to evaluate concerns the measurements on textile surfaces where the colorimetric methods or the luminometer allow to collect numerically correct, but not easy to interpret, data.

Whatever the chosen criterion, which can also include both visual inspection and instrumental investigation (integration of methods), it can be an excellent means for measuring the before and after and the dirt curves and, through measurement of its accumulation over time, it can rationalize the daily cleaning programs (planning of interventions).

DISINFECTION

In a nutshell, disinfection can be defined as the set of one or more treatments designed to eliminate or minimize the surface or diffuse microbial load. For the evaluation of the surface bacterial load, pads or contact plates are used which, based on specific culture media, allow to determine the state of contamination of a given surface (e.g. bacteria, fungal flora, but also coliforms). If necessary, the investigation can be deepened by identifying the name of the microbe by means of molecular biology. Important, especially in this period, are the swabs aimed at the presence or absence of the Coronavirus. In all these cases, it is essential to have an organization that allows the swabs to be sent to the analysis laboratory, taking care that they are packaged appropriately and within the established times. Contamination and, for example, sudden changes in temperature must be absolutely avoided. For the bacterial load dispersed in the air, the main tool is the SAS (Surface Air System) which by sucking known volumes of air makes them convey to the culture media whose reading follows the methods already exposed. Other evaluation tools are the particle counters capable, in fact, of counting the microparticles suspended in the air and therefore of measuring the concentration per unit volume of the micro-drops emitted by a ULV. This instrument must be able to count the micro-drops having a diameter ranging from 0.3-10 µm. If disinfection is carried out with an ozonator, the instrument for assessing whether O3 concentrations reach the bacterial mortality threshold is the [O3] detector.

On the other hand, if, for example, an ionizer or an aerosolizer equipped with an electrostatic device are used, to evaluate their proper functioning, it is essential to have an ion counter (usually negative ones) having the foresight to place the instrument near the emission mouth of the equipment used. This tool is also useful for evaluating nebulizers or ULVs equipped with an electrostatic device used for disinfestation.

DISINFESTATION

The evaluation of the before (monitoring) and after (control) of a pesticide treatment depends on the target pest. Therefore, glue or pheromone or electro-luminous or CO2 traps are used, depending on the case. For mosquitoes in the larval stage, eggtraps and fish are widely used: that is, the technique of taking known quantities of water and counting eggs (only for some species), larvae and pupae. For rodents, the consumption of placebos is generally evaluated and, in special cases, photo-traps are used. When using nebulizers or ULVs to measure the amount of formulation deposited on a surface, water or oil sensitive cards are used depending on the formulation and the droplets and their diameter are counted per unit area; while for the count of micro-drops dispersed in the air, the particle counters already investigated in the disinfection chapter are used, but in this case it would be good to have an instrument capable of capturing diameters of at least 25 µm. An important datum is the time delta in which the coverage of the micro-drops on the surfaces is determined or the concentration per unit volume of the micro-drops suspended in the air.

CONCLUSIONS

From the above it is clear that the monitoring and control methods exist supported by valid measurement tools, but these certainly useful and in some cases indispensable operations are in any case onerous and require specific professional skills. ■ (*) Director of the industrial microbiology laboratory LMB (Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory)

MOSQUITOES a virtuous approach from Albania

A

n example of mosquito control through the use of biological larvicides Autore: Marco Genicco After my first experience dated 2014, which saw the Mosquito Control Project come to light in the Albanian touristic coastal

areas and in the main cities, I was able to take part in it again during 2020. The realization of this fantastic project saw the use of 25 people including technical director, managers and technicians-applicators on the territory divided into teams who, with the help of pick-ups equipped with self-assem-

bled sprayers, traveled the Adriatic coast of Albania, starting very close to the border with Montenegro to finish the race a few km from Greece. Numerous cities are included in the control project which, besides being fairly populated, are a destination for tourists throughout the summer

period, including the capital Tirana, Vallona with its wonderful promenade that is very reminiscent of Nice, not to mention Durres and Saranda, or the beautiful Shkodra and Shengjin. Since 2014, the project has seen the use of only biological larvicides based on Bacillus thuringensis, used alone or in combination with Bacillus sphaericus applied with the most varied means: ■ manual granulators in city areas for culverts ■ granule sprayers for swamp areas ■ manual pressure pumps in areas of construction sites or basements ■ atomizers with miter lances for the canals present in city areas ■ self-mounted sprayers on pick-up for large urban areas with cold fogging system All these equipment are equipped with a GPS tracking system which allows the control bodies to check in real time the timeliness of the treatment and the areas concerned. The project obviously started for controlling the different species of mosquitoes present in the area. Among these I remember the Ochlerotatus (Aedes) caspius, quantitatively present in the Albanian lagoon areas, areas dedicated to tourism where the reproduction of mosquitoes is a problem of “nuisance” (but not only), which affects the quality of life of nearby residents and, above all, affects tourism, often causing the postponement of pleasant excursions, picnics and other forms of outdoor recreation. In the past, in order to be able to enjoy some unique and wonderful tourist areas such as the Karavasta or the Orhicum lagoon, it was necessary for the tourist to apply a repellent on the uncovered parts of the body to limit annoying and irritating mosquito bites during the stay. All this, before the control project, had an important social, cultural and economic impact on a country that has a unique and priceless natural heritage. The health aspect should also be mentioned; it is widely recognized that mosquitoes can have serious repercussions on the health of the general population when pathogens are transmitted from these insects to humans. But now let’s see

THE BACILLUS SPHAERICUS Lysinibacillus sphaericus (formerly known Bacillus sphaericus) is a Gram-positive, mesophilic, rod-shaped bacterium commonly found on soil. It can form resistant endospores that tolerate high temperatures, chemicals, and ultraviolet light and can remain viable for long periods of time. It is of particular interest to the World Health Organization due to the larvicidal effect of some strains against two kinds of mosquitoes (Culex and Anopheles). More effective and persistent than Bacillus thuringiensis, it is often used for biological disinfestation. The cells of L. (Bacillus) sphaericus in the vegetative state are also effective against the larvae of Aedes aegypti, an important vector of yellow fever, as well as other species of the genus Aedes. L. sphaericus has five groups with low levels of homology (correspondence between organs or anatomical formations, even belonging to different taxonomic categories but having the same phylogenetic origin) it has been suggested that each could represent a distinct species, but due to the lack of research on this matter, all remain designated as L. sphaericus.

how the project on the territory is articulated, from the monitoring phase to the implementation of the control. The areas subject to the reproduction of the various harmful species present were mapped back in 2013 and regularly updated; all this was achieved with the GIS system. The update also takes place through employees of the various municipalities or private individuals who report the presence of unmapped breeding sites. In all the mapped areas, the technicians of the Institute of Public Health (IShP) carry out an active monitoring, which begins in May, by sampling the water present in the drains, ditches, lagoon areas, deposits, areas under construction or areas reported by citizens to the competent service. For this service, 16 technicians from the regional districts and 6 from the IShP are involved in the project. The data collected on the 54

THE INSECTICIDAL ACTION OF BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS B. thuringiensis Berliner, of the Bacillaceae family is a rod-shaped, gram-positive bacterium, discovered in Japan and found in larvae of bombice in 1902 by S. lshiwata. In 1911 the German researcher E. Berliner discovered its insecticidal properties. Protein crystals are insoluble in water and organic solvents, are stable in an acidic environment and are degraded by ultraviolet radiation and temperatures above 40 ° C. It was seen that the toxic action of the bacillus is due to a protein crystal (parasporal crystal), which is formed, in the bacterial cell, during the sporulation phase. When the spores are ingested by the larvae, the parasporal crystals, coming into contact with the highly basic environment of the intestine, release toxins (delta-endotoxins), which alter the osmotic balance, causing paralysis of the mouth and digestive systems, interruption of the peristalsis, resulting in death, which usually occurs within 24 hours from the ingestion. Since endotoxin activation occurs for pH> 9, only the species with this pH in the intestine are sensitive to the insecticidal action of the bacterium. Its first practical use against the larvae of the moth Ephestia kuehniella was successfully tested in 1938. Subsequently, over 25 strains of B. thuringiensis were isolated with particularly strong insecticidal properties towards some species of insects, eg. B. thuringiensis var. thuringiensis and var. kurstaki. Finally, Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis showed a marked insecticidal activity against the larvae of mosquitoes, black flies and chironomids, for which it is used in the campaigns of struggle against these dipterans. presence of larvae and their stage of development lead to the creation of an intervention map that is promptly sent to the control team dedicated to that area. This group of operators will carry out the required intervention within 24/48 hours with the chosen methodology, which varies according to the nature of the land. Upon completion of the operation, the Institute of Health sends IShP technicians to the site, 48 hours later, who, by monitoring each treated area, will assess the effectiveness of the intervention or will proceed to request another supplementary intervention that is free of charge. Nothing is left to chance, everything is analytically predicted, and even the

mortality results of the larvae must tend to 100%, but if this data were not enough to completely understand the situation, traps are also set up for monitoring adults both before treatment and later, so as to evaluate the decrease. The choice of methodology and products used for the control of the larvae has been widely confirmed

over time and only biological larvicides such as Vectobac WG 3000 U.I. (Bacillus thuringiensis Israelensis serotype AM 65-52) is used at the label doses, together with Vectomax FG which together with BTI also associates Bacillus sphaericus, which has given persistence in terms of activity in the culverts up to 40 days. ■

In addition to immediately producing traditional trailed sprayers, such as the Start and Wind models, mainly used in agriculture, Spray Team perfects the construction and sale of equipment and machines for urban disinfestation and disinfection and for the treatment of public and urban greenery. To date, the agricultural sector covers only 0.5% of production, as the company has decided to invest heavily on the pest control market: in fact, there are now thousands of companies that produce atomizers, saturating this market area. In pest control sector, however, there are few manufacturers and competition is reduced to a minimum. In mid-2019 Spray Team signed a partnership contract with Gate Srl, a university spin-off and an innovative start-up, which has perfected electrochemical technology. The particular conformation of the electrolytic cell developed by Gate allows to carry out the electrolysis process of

FRAGRANCES in the hospital wards between MYTH and REALITY Among new trends and needs of the hospital world, perfumes are returning to the ward at great speed and determined not to leave it anymore Luca Ilorini

Chimico e divulgatore scientifico

58

| April/2021

I

n the world of healthcare linked to large hospitals and nursing homes the coexistence between the numerous products of the professional sector used in the world of detergents and fragrances is often difficult. Especially in some states, it is preferred to use products without fragrances, since perfumes may carry allergens and dangerous substances, which, because of their potential irritating effect, are often considered a possible cause of further complications for some very sensitive patients, especially at the dermal level. In fact, for many doctors and medical professionals, perfumes should be a must in hospitals, given their ability to have a positive effect on the mood and behavior of many patients, even seriously ill.

PERFUMED HI-TECH FOR A SANITIZED WARD

Artificial intelligence has always supported the development of fragrances that may be able to find a place in particular sectors, as well as responding to particular needs that are connected to needs of public interest such as those related to the trend of sanitation, which is now an indispensable necessity in hospital wards. A development project conducted by the University of Dublin, in particular by its spin-out Kastus, part of the TU Technological University of the Irish capital which has developed a technological solution capable of adhering to the surface of fabrics by perfuming it at the same time: the innovative antimicrobial technology makes it possible to protect and perfume numerous supports of various kinds ranging from the surfaces of hospital benches to the touch screens of healthcare workers’ telephones to allow the level of sanitization within hospitals to be increasingly raised. Kastus’ patented technological solution is sprayed on glass or ceramic surfaces and is then fixed on the surface during cooking, sometimes in synergy with specially designed fragrances: once permanently incorporated into the surface, the antimicrobial activation of Kastus is continuously powered by natural light; when the latter hits the surface, the latest generation

technology developed by the start-up reacts with the humidity in the air to form reactive oxygen species, consisting of agents that constantly attack and destroy the harmful bacteria they encounter, leaving a super hygienic and germ-free surface. The result is an improved surface that provides antimicrobial and antiviral protection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for life and that presents fragrances capable of giving a perfumed sensation of extreme diffusivity and able to give the patients of the structure a more strong feeling of sanitation in addition to that already normally inherent in the type of finished product in question.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FRAGRANCE IN THE HOSPITAL UNIVERSE

There are numerous studies validated at university level and by numerous stakeholders that recommend the type of fragrances that could be included in the solutions for professional cleaning of hospital wards; solutions that have as a minimum common denominator the possibility of ‘improving’ the patient’s experience within the hospi-

tal. Undoubtedly there are numerous scientific studies that have examined the effects of a pleasant perfume in the medical field: one of these researches used for example the scent of vanilla while patients were undergoing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging for cancer: the result was that the patients experienced 63% less anxiety during the procedure when perfume was used compared to the same situation without using fragrance; it would be interesting to promote the use of fragrances for professional cleaning solutions for hospital surfaces with strong gourmand hints of vanilla, whether they are trigger solutions or concentrated floor cleaners. Studies have also indicated that perfume can be used in many applications to positively influence the behaviors and emotions of patients and hospital staff - healthcare facilities are prone to bad human odors, as well as odors from antiseptics and other chemicals; it is highly likely that different areas of any healthcare facility have distinct and not so subtle aromas. The United States is an extremely pioneering country when it comes to this kind of solutions, for example the April/2021 |

North Shore Medical Center in North Miami and the brand new Lennar Foundation Medical Center on the University of Miami campus have launched fragrance programs: The first perfumes its main hall and the second focuses on the centralized waiting area, the waiting area of the emergency room, the administrative offices, the waiting room of the women’s studies and the sports medicine areas, combining both solutions using stick diffusers of great design and visual impact, and products for cleaning surfaces with the presence of microcapsules inside that can allow a release of the fragrance prolonged over time, allowing people to appreciate the long lasting effectiveness of the same, latest discovery of technology in the field of fragrances for the universe of professional detergents.

and with the demands of the modern consumer for the creation of a powerful weapon to completely eradicate bad odors rather than masking them with a temporary bouquet of air care products. Metazene is one of the most effective and ecologically preferred odor neutralizers on the market; its primary reputation as an effective odor remover has been so successful that

of stale food in the halls of apartment complexes or scents of urine and sweat often common in the sheets of hospital beds and in certain bathrooms of the facilities. At the hospital-care level it would be interesting to apply solutions with ‘anti-odor’ technology to fragrances belonging to the citrus and citral notes universe, since the latter have always been the most used notes in

its use has expanded into many plant processing operations: commercial establishments and hospitals are becoming increasingly aware of the need for deodorization programs to maintain healthy work environments, with various industrial applications related to the professional sector: some examples undoubtedly include persistent odors that result from repeated use of the same products, such as smells

the hospital context if combined with the disinfectants: notes such as lemon, lemongrass and vervain have always been among the most used in the universe of detergents for the health care sector, sometimes in combination with aromatic and fresh scents linked to the mentholated or pinaceae sphere, which add a balsamic and medical effect which has always been highly appreciated by patients. ■

ODOUR-CONTROL: A NECESSITY

Within the hospital environment there are numerous ‘bad smells’ with which it is necessary to live daily and only the adoption of scented solutions can allow the patient to have a more pleasant experience within the hospital environment; often these solutions are not enough and therefore it is necessary to introduce special technologies that allow the staff to work in a control odor mood. A widely used additive, compatible with most of the raw materials used in the essence sector, is represented by metazene, which attacks bad smells and destroys them at the molecular level. The metazene particles bind to the heavier, smelly molecules and force a chemical alteration of their electronic patterns, which eventually evaporates them due to the very low vapor pressure. This dual action odor neutralization system has become the most powerful odor eliminator in the world and is ideal for use in hospitals and all types of medical care facilities and is the result of years of in-depth studies on the topic. Its evolution is closely linked both with advances in technology and science 60

Innovazione e cambiamento di GIOVANNA ROSADA

alle pagg. 2223

COMAC’s commitment TO SUSTAINABILITY

T

he Mission of Comac is to defend and spread the culture of cleanliness by providing innovative and reliable solutions that improve people’s quality of life. We are aware that cleaning allows us to live in safe and healthy environments, this is why we imagine a future where cleaning is also sustainable. Cleaning has to improve the environments where people live, but it also needs to protect the environment for the future generations who will live in it. This is the reason why we decided to outline the commitments towards sustainability into concrete actions.

PRODUCTION THAT SAVES RESOURCES AND GOOD HABITS

We are committed to making products that respect the environment, investing in sustainable solutions and technologies, searching for materials that are easy to recycle and lowering the impact of our whole production process. We strive, where possible, to use recyclable and secondary raw materials.

62

| April/2021

Moreover, we know the impact our work has on the environment, which is why we are looking to change our company’s habits to cut down on consumptions and wastes. We encourage a culture of social responsibility in business, including within our company. We try to run responsible initiatives that can fit in with the daily lives of the people working at our company.

TECHNOLOGIES DESIGNED TO RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Thanks to the introduction of more and more innovative technologies, nowadays Comac’s machines can optimize the use of resources by eliminating water, energy and detergent wastes while reducing sound pollution and the time dedicated to cleaning processes. #comac4water, for example, is an ambitious project that aims to find the best solutions for recycling and reusing the water used during cleaning processes. Among the solutions, it is worth mentioning the Non-stop Cleaning System

that is directly installed on Comac’s floor scrubbing machines that allows to reuse the washing water while working. It is an extremely innovative and practical solution to grant a significant advantage in financial terms and minimize the environmental impact of cleaning services.

CONCRETE ACTION: THE CARBON FOOTPRINT FOR COMAC’S LATEST GENERATION FLOOR SCRUBBERS

Our commitment to environmental sustainability now translates into concrete action. We have started measuring the carbon footprint of our latest generation floor scrubbers. We know that if we want to improve we need to understand and above all measure what we are doing. The choice of applying the ISO standard 14067:2018 represents for Comac a first important step as it allows us to evaluate the Carbon Footprint throughout the whole lifecycle, also known as “from cradle to grave”. This means we are able to come up with a real, certified figure for the environmental performance of our floor scrubbers. Thanks to this evaluation, it is possible to know and monitor the actual impact of Comac’s floor scrubbing machines on climate change, to design products with a decreasing impact on climate change, that is the main challenge that humankind must tackle. ■ www.comac.it
