We typically do not sell embryos. However, our embryo program has recently produced a larger supply of quality embryos so we find ourselves in a situation where we have inventory we can offer for sale. Guaranteed Breeders

Dr. Steve Schultz has done a stringent BSE (Breeding Soundness Evaluation) on every bull in this sale. Each bull selling has passed Dr. Schultz’s tests and is considered a satisfactory and potential breeder. All bulls are guaranteed as breeding bulls through the first breeding season. If a problem should arise, please contact any of the above numbers and we will offer a replacement bull of equal or greater quality. If a replacement bull is not available when needed, a credit will be issued for Mound Creek’s 2024 Bull Sale.

Retaining Rights to One Embryo Flush

To simplify our female sale we will not retain breeding or embryo interests in any female in this sale. However, if any female goes into embryo production in her future, Mound Creek or cooperator will retain the rights on every female in the sale to one embryo collection or IVF oocyte harvest at our expense.

Heifer Breeding Option

Mound Creek Ranch will offer to keep any heifer sold in this sale for a prearranged breeding period to AI to any available Mound Creek herd sire and then breed said heifer to Mound Creek natural service sires. If interested in this program please contact ranch staff or marketing team to understand payment terms and details for this Heifer Breeding Option.

Cattle Load Out

Cattle can be loaded out during and after the sale. We ask that any pot-sized loads wait until the conclusion of the sale. We will load out cattle on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and ask that each buyer inform the clerks of your desire to load out on Sunday along with an approximate time of arrival. If you require a load out on another day, please inform the clerks as to your desired date and time.

Welcome to Mound Creek Ranch! We know it’s sale time because the nervous factor has started inching up. Mound Creek Ranch holds the distinction of being the longest tenured Brangus breeder to consecutively host an active bull sale event dating back to our first sale in 1993. We realize the only way we can accomplish this feat is with the continued support of so many long-time customers and friends who have trusted the value of our cattle in helping them move their genetic needles. Please keep in mind the females will sell Friday afternoon, March 17 and the bulls will sell as usual Saturday, March 18.

With our dedication to raising cutting edge seedstock bulls, we certainly understand everything we do is possible only with the continued support of our customers and our many friends established over the last four decades in the Brangus breed. Most importantly, we are so thankful to God as he has blessed us to be caretakers of this land and livestock.

Fertility Indicator Traits

Without reserve, we have an intensive focus on genomic enhanced breeding values for Heifer Pregnancy, Stayability, Breed Back, Number of Calves. These four values are the best fertility indicator traits in our breed’s EPD arsenal, and with these values, seedstock breeders can be more dedicated and comfortable with selection for fertility, the most economically important trait in the cattle business! Stockbulls purchased by any cow/calf producer using these highly effective and economically driven traits will become the driving force in profitability for any program in the ranching business. These four fertility indicator traits are calculated values from the entire breed’s national database and can be used to make genetic improvement in a herd’s ability to get pregnant, remain in the herd over a long lifetime, breed back annually, raise more total calves in a cow’s lifetime, and therefore wean more total pounds of calf. More total calves and more total pounds equals more total dollars!

The Fertility Indicator Traits really mean nothing unless you also have the National Breed Percentile Rankings. You will find genetically driven values for the four fertility indicator traits noted for each animal in this sale, and more importantly, their breed percentile ranks allowing you to compare our genetic values against any others across the country. These fertility indicator traits are your biggest profit drivers and should be key in selection and purchasing decisions. When considering your purchases this season, certainly consider the immense importance in having this fertility information AND the associated percentile ranks! One might wonder why these numbers are missing in other sale catalogs?!

You Can’t Outrun the Blood

Coined by Donnie Robertson, the breed’s great friend and best ultrasound technician, You Can’t Outrun the Blood does the best job in simplifying the thesis of breeding seedstock cattle. The results of our selection pressures is governed by a number of factors. However, the real driver of our efforts as breeders is, and always has been, stacking DNA and genetic worth driven by the DNA we choose to “put” into our breeding program. You Can’t Outrun the Blood!

First of all, we are Brangus breeders, have been for four decades, and are absolutely committed to the welfare of our breed, our breed association, and the value of Brangus genetics taking their rightful place at the top of the beef cattle world. However, as breeders we must move forward and embrace the needs of our bull buying customers, the feeding sector and the packing sector. There continues to be emotion centered around the concept of 3/8 X 5/8 Registered Brangus cattle. There are those programs that promote the concept of “true Brangus” believing those animals that have generations of breeding registered animals to registered animals are “true” 3/8 x 5/8 animals. Certainly this is the case, but strictly and only on paper. The reality is this is an incorrect assumption from a DNA point of view and certainly science, DNA technology, and facts prove how invalid that belief is when reviewing the DNA side of our breed’s genetic population. Mound Creek has gone to extra expense, time, labor and “catalog space” to offer this information based on science and technology rather than emotion.

The combination of DNA from the two parents to their progeny is random. Period. We know each parent contributes half of the DNA, but this random combination means some offspring might get “more” Brahman genetics from each parent while other offspring might get “more” Angus genetics. This “randomness” can be affected by the selection pressure on varying traits over time and generations but not by simply breeding Registered back to Registered. The information we have provided throughout this catalog for our Bos indicus % and Bos taurus % certainly more than proves our case! There are very wide ranges of these percentages across Registered, Ultrablack 2, Ultrablack 1, and the entire 230 animals in this catalog. This information is also proven over thousands and thousands of DNA samples from Registered Brangus cattle dating back to animals born four decades ago!

These are the same genetics our customers have been successfully using for decades, and those genetics and breeding thesis have built this program over the decades. Nothing has changed other than we now have more science thru DNA to accurately inform our buying public what is actually happening “under the hide.”

So how does one utilize this information? Nothing has changed from this set of cattle to the previous cattle over three plus decades other than giving you more facts based on science rather than speculation! Do what you always do. Review the type of bull you prefer relative to phenotype, frame, thickness, rib, soundness, bone, amount of leather, the provided weights and measures, etc. Next, closely study the genomic data and associated GE-EPD ranks and place a large emphasis and faith in this information! Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance or recommendations from any of our staff and sales team. Then, BUY THE BULLS THAT FIT YOUR NEEDS, SELECTION CRITERIA, and LONG TERM GOALS. Genomically Enhanced EPD Values

We have embraced DNA technology and the impact this has for all of us in the beef world from providing accurate ancestry to utilizing DNA technology as an important component in providing and using Genomically Enhanced EPD Values (GEEPD). We see an incredible demand for DNA technology starting with the seedstock provider reaching all the way to the packing side of our industry. It’s here, here to stay, and will be instrumental in making more profitable seedstock cattle, therefore creating more value for the customers of our genetic program.

We are making every effort to have 100% cattle sire verified by sale time. As of print time we are awaiting the very latest DNA results to insure 100% GE-EPD numbers and will have these completed by sale time. Currently, 89% of the sale offering is listed with GE-EPD panels and these are so noted in the proper space in this catalog. Once the March Brangus National Cattle Evaluation is populated we will provide a complete list of all the sale cattle with their newest and latest GE-EPD panels.

Our GE-EPD values are the best in Brangus with the most balance across traits and the best blend of antagonistic traits. Mound Creek seedstock bulls will offer your program more long-term genomic value than any other, will create more returned dollars for each dollar spent, and ultimately insure more long-term survivability and profitability in your breeding program. Bull Development

We are now in our seventh year of a hand-fed, silage-based bull feeding program that allows us to accurately understand consumption during gain test period. This ration is blended with 50% silage, 10% cotton burrs, and 40% premix composed of a protein pellet balancer, cracked corn, and DDGs. Our stockbulls are gain tested post weaning in long pastures fifteen to twenty acres in size. This testing program enhances greater mobility, ensures more quality of hoof and leg soundness, produces bigger bellied cattle with greater forage-based appetite, and are more ready to survive long term in a real-world environment. Simply put, they are more suited to stay longer, stay stronger, and be better equipped for the rigors of their new ranch life.

Brangus Value Project

The Brangus Value project is a comprehensive progeny test overseen by International Brangus Breeders Association designed to follow Brangus and Ultrablack AI sired steers through the feeding and packing segments of our industry capturing data on feed efficiency, carcass traits, and tenderness. In the future the data will filter through IBBA genomic database and national sire evaluation more accurately influencing the genomically enhanced EPD on thousands of seedstock animals in our breed.

These types of programs always have a price tag to be effectively managed, so the Brangus Value Project was formed. More details are found in the following pages. Mound Creek Ranch has pledges for four sponsorships from this program and will give these sponsorships to each of the volume bull buyer, volume female buyer, high selling bull buyer, and high selling female buyer.

Where’s The Weights and Measures

We believe in the whole herd use of GE-EPD values and those associated percentile ranks. In fact, the Percentile Ranks are the most important component of the entire set of weights, measures, and EPD values provided in this database driven catalog. However, our buyers sure appreciate the individual weights and measures provided for each animal in this sale. Our genetic selection program, assisted greatly through our use GE-EPD values, continues to prove the consistency and long-term effect from our intensive selection program designed to address the needs of those in the ranching world. Even with a silage-based feeding program in a very wet, muddy, windy, brisk winter, here are the excellent weights and measures from these 170 sale bulls adjusted to 205 days and 365 days of age.

Feeders and Packers

During a very oppressive and dry summer and thru a wet, muddy, windy, brisk winter, our sale bulls still averaged 5.7% IMF fitting in the CAB end of Choice while blending an outstanding RE/100 lb. body weight of 1.25 inches! Additionally, there are over 20% of these bulls that have collectively scanned in all three levels of the Prime grades. These grid-based indicator values are off the charts and the importance of these two numbers (RE/100 and IMF) is validated by the input and visits to feedlots and packing plants. In fact, that segment of our beef industry uses these two measures as primary components when making future buying decisions based on prior feeding and hanging history.

Broadcasting Our Sale Real Time on the Internet

This year’s sale will again be broadcast live on the internet. Our good friend Wade Fisher, Ideal Productions, has professionally taken video of our sale offering. The Ideal Productions video will be broadcast real time by DV Auctions and those who cannot attend the sale will have the capabilities of bidding on cattle throughout the day.

The cattle will sell from the video screens and remain in their display pens during our sale. Please spend a little extra time going thru the cattle in their display pens prior to the sale so you can be familiar with your potential purchases. Any of our team members can assist in your selection process.

Embryo Collection Rights

Rather than trying to keep track of different ownership percentages thru these females we have decided to sell 100% ownership and possession of every female selling. However, Mound Creek Ranch and Cooperators will reserve the rights to one embryo collection or two half collections (IVF harvest or conventional collection) on every female in the sale at our expense and your convenient timing.

The Brangus Value Project

Everyone knows the value of a Brangus cow. The Brangus Value Project tests the value of Brangus steers.

Ninety research steers sired by five widelyused Brangus and Ultrablack sires were fed and harvested in southwest Kansas in the winter/spring of 2022.

Performance was compared against a southwest KS benchmark of same-weight steers placed on feed at the same time.

The steers were sold on a carcass merit grid.

The results didn’t surprise us because we look at Brangus data every day. But, some people may not realize what modern Brangus and Ultrablack cattle can do beyond the ranch gate.

There’s No Payday Without Payweight!

Payweight

Steers finished at 1449lbs and yielded well to produce average carcass weight of 936lbs.

Premium Payweight

When sold on a carcass merit grid, they netted $64/head premium over the prevailing live price.

fEfficient Payweight

On 700lbs of feedlot gain, they gained 3.94lbs/day compared to southwest KS benchmark steers at 3.16. They converted feed 1/2lb per pound of gain better than the benchmark, netting $52/head in feed savings.

yDelicious Payweight

91% graded Choice or Prime, with over 50% grading Premium Choice or better. When tested for tenderness at a university lab, 95% tested Very Tender or Tender, with the vast majority Very Tender.

Summary of Results from Round 1 of the Brangus Value Project

Ninety (90) steers were fed and harvested, representing 5 Brangus and Ultra sires and one Angus reference sire.

Feed Conversion Advantage

The Brangus Value Project steers converted feed at 6.04 lbs of dry feed per pound of gain, compared to comparable cattle on feed at the same time which converted feed at 6.52, thus saving almost ½ lb of feed for each pound of weight gain. On 700-lbs of feedlot gain, and $300 per ton dry matter feed cost, that amounts to $52/hd feed savings compared to comparable cattle fed at the same time in the same location.

Feeding Results: Growth Rate Advantage Compared to same-weight steers placed on feed in the same area (SW Kansas) at the same time, the Brangus Value Project steers outgained the others by nearly 0.8 lbs per day; posting an ADG of 3.94 compared to 3.16.

Registration Number: Animals noted with “R” number are Registered Brangus. Those noted with a “UB” number are Ultra-Blacks, indicating they are a Brangus-Angus blend. Those noted as UB2 are second cross Ultrablacks. “AX” recorded bulls are appendix registered purebred Brangus that have non-typical Brangus color pattern. Animals noted with “DNA” are correctly pedigreed yet waiting final validation for AI sire or possibly Donor Dams. These animals will ultimately have “R” or “UB” prefixes. Polled/Scurred/Horned: Denotes animals that are either smooth polled or have the presence of scurs or slick spots. Those noted as “scurs” typically have had scurs removed post-weaning.

Ultrasound

Ribeye Area (REA): Measured in square inches, a predictor of ribeye size.

Ribeye Area/100 lb Body Weight (RE/100): Expressed in inches of ribeye per 100 lbs body weight as measured by actual ribeye divided by actual yearling weight multiplied by 100 (lbs).

Fat (FAT): Measured in inches and adjusted to 365 days.

Intramuscular Fat (IMF): Measured as a percentage and used as a predictor of genetic marbling value.

Individual Performance

Birth Weight (BW): Actual weight at birth, expressed in pounds.

Weaning Weight (AWW): Weaning weight adjusted to a constant 205 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at weaning and age of dam .

Yearling Weight (AYW): Yearling weight adjusted to a constant 365 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at yearling time, average daily gain post-weaning, and adjusted 205 weight.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): Testicular circumference, measured in centimeters, and adjusted to 365 days of age.

New EPDs/Index

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): The probability that a female will have a calf as a two year old. Expressed as a percent with the higher number more desirable.

Stayability (Stay): Measures the probability that a cow will still be in the herd at six years of age, with the higher number being more desirable.

Breed Back (BB): A fertility indicator trait that expresses the likelihood for a female ability to become pregnant on an annual basis, or a sire’s ability to produce daughters with the same value.

Number of Calves (NC): A fertility indicator trait that expresses the number of potential calves a female will have in her lifetime, or a sire’s ability to produce daughters with a greater likelihood to have more calves in her lifetime.

Terminal Index (Term): Evaluates a sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold in a terminal end point scenario. No replacement females are kept in the scenario.

Expected Progeny Difference

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): The genetic predictor of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database.

EPD Accuracy: Since all sale animals in this catalog are non-parents, their accuracies are the lowest calculated by our national sire evaluation program. Every EPD reported is either current, interim or pedigree EPD. Calving Ease Direct (CED): Expressed as a percentage and indicates the influence of the animal on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. The higher the number the more desirable for calving ease.

Commercial Super Baldie Heifers

We will be selling 15 Super Baldie Commercial Heifers that will be divided into three or four pens prior to the Mound Creek Bull and Female Sale. These commercial heifers are as sweet a set as can be found. They are out of Brangus cows sired by Mound Creek stock bulls and sired by Hereford bulls from W4 Herefords. These heifers will be weighing 900 to 1000 lbs. at sale time and are ready to breed anytime! These heifers came out of the Double L commercial Brangus cow herd just outside of Huntsville and are current with all shots and vaccinations.

The cattle will be sorted, individual tags will identified for each pen, and cattle will be videoed by the cattle selling in each sorted pen. Any questions can be directed to any member of the Mound Creek marketing team.

PRIME TIME Terms & Conditions

Except for those stated in the below terms and conditions, there are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to the merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold at this auction. The warranties and guarantees set forth in the “Terms & Conditions” are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any party through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided, and all other obligations or liabilities.

1. BIDDING: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision shall be final.

2. TERMS: All terms are cash or check. Settlement must be made to the clerk at the conclusion of the auction.

3. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, but will not be delivered until settlement has been made.

4. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: When full settlement has been made, a certificate of registration will be furnished and transferred to the purchaser on those lots that are registered. Give full name and address to the clerk when making payment so the Certificate of Registry will be transferred properly.

5. HEALTH: All animals where possession is sold are eligible for interstate shipment except as otherwise noted. The cattle have been tested for Tuberculosis and Bangs disease within thirty (30) days of the sale date or come from a Brucellosis Certified Free Herd or come from a Brucelosis Certified Free Herd or originate from a Certified Tuberculosis or Bangs free state.. A health certificate will be furnished.

6. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements from the auction box will take precedence over the printed matter in this catalog. All cattle will be sold by lot numbers as announced by the auctioneer.

7. BREEDING GUARANTEE: (A) All animals are guaranteed to be breeders with the exception of (1) injury or disease occurring after sale; (2) negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser. (B) Any bull which either (1) produces viable semen; (2) settles 1/3 or more of the healthy cows he serves; (3) is the sire of 20 or more animals or; (4) settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any six month trial period, shall be considered a breeder.

8. LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. Cattle Brokers, Inc. has been employed by the consignor(s) of the animals being sold solely for the purpose of advertising and conducting the subject sale.
