TRAINING TIPS with PHIL HAUGEN
RODEO ATHLETES AND THE WESTERN INDUSTRY After trying to stay up for 10 nights in a row watching the NFR it seems like it takes a few days for my sleep schedule and my work schedule to get back to normal. Now that I’ve had a few days to reflect I started thinking about what that rodeo does for our Western Industry each year, and it really made me think about how much we need to appreciate and thank those athletes for putting on such an incredible show. It is so interesting to me to listen to the interviews of the contestants, whether it’s prior to the start of the rodeo, after winning a go round, or even after winning a world Championship, they all usually have one statement in common,”It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid.” That right there tells you the power and influence that this one event has on our industry each year and without those contestants, who are the very best in the world, it wouldn’t be what it is today. I wish I knew what the economic impact was from those ten nights of rodeo in December on our Western Industry, it would be staggering. There are so many of us that benefit either directly or indirectly from the NFR each December. Whether it be from Retail sales, picking up new customers, reuniting with friends out in Vegas, or simply being more motivated going into the new year. It’s a great rodeo for the contestants to showcase their talents and it gives them a chance to put some money in their pocket at the end of a year that at times can be full of challenges. With that being said
4
tho, the great thing about rodeo athletes is that they’re doing something they love and have a passion for. When you hear a guy the size of Ty Erickson say “It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little Kid”, after he won the World Championship in Steer Wrestling, you realize that it’s all about reaching goals and having dreams come true. I didn’t hear him say anything about the $ he won. That is what I love about rodeo, rodeo contestants, and the Western Industry. We all need to believe that our dreams can come true and when we watch these athletes do what they do on the biggest stage it gives all of us hope. My hope is that these contestants realize what a positive impact they are not only on our industry but on the World. We live in the greatest country in the world and Lord knows we have some challenges but I think it’s a pretty easy fix to get it headed in the right direction.... The world needs more Cowboys and Cowgirls! God Bless and have a great Month!

Dr Jason by Ddee Haynes
THORNE FAMILY - JASON, LACEY, AYSA & ASPYN All Photos Courtesy of Thorne’s Family
I first met Jason (aka Dr. Thorne) while on a field trip with the Custer County 4-H horse club about seven years ago. Jason was fresh out of vet school and working for a local clinic. I am pretty certain he was still considered the low man on the totem pole, thus the reason for him being chosen to visit with a group of lively 4-H kids. As a mom of one of those kids, I was extremely impressed how Jason handled all the questions that were thrown at him, how he took time to show the kids
14
around the clinic and overall made the entire experience a huge success. Jason’s demeanor and sincerity that day left a lasting impression on those kids that day and I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself as I listened to the conversations on the way home as a few of the young girls talked about what they had learned that day and “how cute” Dr. Thorne was! Growing up in Marlow, OK as the son of the Police Chief, Jason once
considered following in his father’s footsteps but his love for animals kept pulling him in a different direction. When his dad began adding longhorns to his herd Jason had the idea to start training them to ride. Jason would choose which longhorn to train as to which animal would first come up to him. Jason stated, that gaining the trust of the longhorn was important, but building their trust was the key. Once a longhorn pupil was chosen, Jason would become the only person to have contact
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Winston S. Churchill The words of Winston Churchill could not ring truer to a person’s character than to Dr. Jason Thorne, DVM. with the animal, even pulling it from the herd. The longhorn would come to rely solely on Jason. During his High School years Jason trained several longhorns to ride and would later sell them. In addition to his love for animals Jason enjoyed playing basketball and football. However, when he later transferred to a larger school, he found that sports were taking time away from his true love, animals. Jason’s career path was determined after a “Career day” allowed him to work alongside Dr. Holly Wilson at Beavers Animal Hospital in Lawton, OK. At the time Jason was 15 years-old and happened to be at the hospital while Dr. Wilson was preforming a C-section on a greyhound. Dr. Wilson showed Jason how to clear the fluid from the pup’s lungs. Thanks to Dr. Wilson and Jason all four pups survived and the career path for Jason was clear. Jason graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. Oklahoma, in the spring of 2010. Jason took his first job at a clinic in Western, OK where I first met him on the 4-H horse club field trip. Little did I know after meeting Jason that afternoon that he would become a huge part of our family, not just as the DVM for our animals but also as a friend. In 2016, Dr. Jason and his wife Lacey, decided to take a leap of faith and go out on their own. They purchased a
vet trailer and hit the ground running. It did not take long before Jason’s reputation, work ethics and true love for animals spread around the country side. Jason soon became the go-to-vet for cattle ranchers, horse lovers and of course the small animal cliental. Our family had started using Jason for horse vaccinations and maintenance but it wasn’t until one almost fatal night that we saw just how much this young Vet truly cared for his four-legged patients. The weather had turned off cold and wouldn’t you know it, one of our horses was showing signs of colic. As I prayed for our horse Magic, I dialed Jason’s cell. When Jason answered I explained the symptoms and he assured me he was on his way. Sure, enough Magic was impacted, dehydrated and on her way to a full-blown colic. Jason worked patiently administrating fluids all the while touching and speaking to Magic in a calm and soothing way. After the first bag was emptied, he still did not feel Magic was good and decided to give her another bag of fluids. By this time, it was close to 11:00 pm and pretty darn cold even inside the barn. Jason told me to go inside and that he would stay with Magic, he said he had paperwork to do and could sit inside his truck and work while keeping an eye on her. Although I offered to stay with him and Magic, he insisted I go inside. A few hours later Jason texted me. Magic was going to be fine and he would check on her the next day. True to his word he not only called he came out to look at her again. Over the past few years we have had other emergencies as well as non-emergency issues with our animals. Each time Jason has gone above and be-

yond. After my favorite dog Pete, was chewed up by coyotes in the wee hours of a Sunday morning, I waited until after 8:00 am that morning to call. Jason told me to load up Pete and meet me at his home. Once again Jason saved the day and Pete survived. Although I do believe Pete still holds a grudge for Jason calling him fat! Come on Jason Pete is just big-boned! When Jason decided to strike out on his own, Lacey supported his decision and took the leap of faith with him. Together they have worked alongside one-another to establish Territory Medicine, located just west of Weatherford, OK. Both Jason and Lacey have made many sacrifices to make their dreams a reality. While Jason worked long hours, Lacey gave up family time with him. For over a year the young family lived in a 5th-Wheel trailer with their two small children, inside what is now part of the clinic. Jason, Lacey and their two young daughters Aysa and Aspyn, now make their home over the clinic in a home they literally built themselves. Territory Medicine is booming. Although his business is continuing to grow, Dr. Jason still makes each patient and their owners feel as if they are his only priority. I whole heartily believe the old saying “if you love your job you will never work a day in your life”. Dr. Jason Thorne is a perfect example loving his job. Keep up the good work Dr. Jason and thank you for all you do!
Until Next Time…….

THROUGH MY EYES
CODY CUSTER -
Many spiritual leaders have confined people to the rules of a doctrine or creed rather than pointing them to sonship and the fullness of Fathers Kingdom. Many people have been duped by religious leaders to blindly follow them instead of releasing them to the freedom of hearing from the Fathers Spirit for themselves. Oh but the ones who let us know that Father trusts us and gives us responsibility with the wisdom from His Spirit are giving us exactly what we need. Funny how those who are walking under the religious spirit try to line out those who don’t see things the way they do. Lack of trust will cause religious people to try to change others through their own power rather than to give relationship and Gods Spirit a chance to bring the change that the Father wants in each of His children. They have doctrine and their belief system down to a Tee and most of the time they quote the bible yet sacrifice a trusting relationship to be right. In many cases this damages any chance for a relationship of trust to take place. That doesn’t sound like what the bible describes as to how Jesus did it. I’d like to know, what the goal is anyway? Manipulate them to serve something (a system) they can’t trust or to point them to a Faithful Loving Father. Children have an inheritance while servants have duty. Here is a short Quote from a good friend... “As a pastor my job is not to teach you what to do. My job is to teach you who you are”. Andy Taylor
I pray that those of influence in your life direct to to who you are and freedom in Fathers Spirit.
GOD BLESS Cody Custer 28

HOME SPUN
Be aAround Goal Setter the first of each year, a lot of people get in the “goal”
setting mood. They make New Years resolutions, or set goals they wish to reach in the upcoming year. For some reason or another, tradition gets people into this mode around the first of each New Year. I personally believe that goal setting should be a far more regular occurrence. I go over my own goals pretty much on a daily basis. As part of my morning routine, I go over short, mid, and long term goals. By going over my goals on a daily basis, I keep a fresh mental image of them in my mind. I believe that it is very important for a person to have such goals in life, for without them, you will just wander aimlessly or be in a ho-hum existence. It is also very important you have short, mid, and long term goals. Each is a step that leads to the next. Just as you cannot learn to run a race before you can walk, you will not reach your long term goals or biggest dreams without setting a set of smaller goals to reach along the way. Short term goals to me are goals I plan to reach today, tomorrow, or maybe within the next 30 days or so. Short term goals are the basics. Things like “I will have a positive attitude today” or “I will rope the roping dummy correctly 10 times this morning” are examples. Short term goals are the little details in life. The fundamentals. The building blocks you need to lay before getting bigger. Short terms goals such as “I will enroll in education classes today” or “I will take a lesson from a pro today” are things that we must do before going on to our larger goals. No matter how successful you have become, short terms goals are still important. Depending on where you are in life, your goals may differ greatly, but the formula for attaining goals is still the same. Start with that first step and build from there. The amazing thing is that each day there is a new step to take. No matter where you may be at in your goal reaching process, the basics still apply each and every day. World champion ropers still go out and rope the dummy correctly so many times each day, and people who are successful in life are constantly reapplying the basics over and over. Striving to be the best you can be at each and every aspect of your life that day is a great short term goal to apply. Mid term goals are goals for the next few weeks or maybe even for the next year depending upon the size of the particular goal. Mid term goals are things that don’t happen overnight, but they are important in reaching the overall long term goal. Things like “I will get my (fill in the blank) certification this year,” or “I will win five awards this year,” are examples of mid term goals. They are things that cannot be accomplished in one or two days, but they are not your biggest dreams of what you plan to accomplish either. Mid term goals are as equally important as short term goals in eventually accomplishing long term goals. Mid term goals are bigger pieces of the puzzle, but they are still pieces. Without the appropriate pieces, the overall puzzle, big picture, long term goal or what have you, cannot be completed. Taking yourself to the next level at whatever you are doing is a great mid term goal to have. Long term goals are usually the ending point of a certain goal. They are where you want to eventually end up. They may be a year out, or maybe 10 years out. Long term goals should not be small in my opinion. Things like “I will pay off this place” or “I will have a net worth of 20 million” are examples of long term goals. Long term goals can be tricky. They should be big, but should also be attainable. Remember you can always adjust upward with your goals as you have completed or reached certain levels. You should always dream big and have lofty goals in mind, but don’t set them so high in the beginning that they seem unattainable for where you are at in life.
30
Doing this may just be setting yourself up for disappointment. Remember you cannot reach the goal of being a multi millionaire without first reaching the goal of making one hundred thousand dollars and so on. Long term goals are meant to be big, to be all you have ever dreamed of, but don’t forget that along the way there are other goals that need to be reached. I don’t think there is anything wrong with “shooting for the stars.” Actually, I encourage it. However, we need to remember to aim at something a little closer first (and enjoy each step or accomplishment along the way). Some people get caught up in just thinking about the long term goals, or thinking about their biggest dreams. Most of these people would be referred to as “dreamers.” I don’t think that there is anything wrong with being a “dreamer.” I have been one myself for most of my life. Thinking Big was never a problem for me, but I didn’t have a good solid plan on how I was going to get there. It was only after I realized that I need to build the steps along the way that I started to realize that my long term goals were attainable. As I learned to enjoy the moment, and enjoy reaching shorter terms goals, my longer term goals became easier to reach also. Along the way, I had to readjust my long term goals to loftier heights to keep pushing myself onward and upward. On the other end of the spectrum are the folks who are so focused on short term goals or little details, that they lose sight of the whole big picture. We’ve all heard the saying “he can’t see the forest for the trees.” It is this type of person who, (in my opinion) needs to quit focusing so much on the small stuff and learn to dream bigger, or set long term goals and believe in them also. I am a firm believer in “what the mind expects, the mind will get.” While it is great to do the short term goals well, you need to have a balance of mid and long term goals also or your mind will never open up and think big. Just as a dreamer needs to learn to put that first step forward, the guy who “can’t see the forest for the trees” needs to learn to step back and get a hold of the big picture. We all have personalities that automatically put us at different points on the spectrum between being a dreamer and being a small detail guy, but as long as we are honest with ourselves about our strengths and weaknesses, and don’t mind a little change, we can all become successful at reaching all of our life’s goals. As mentioned, I believe that goals are important for us. The person who has no goal, nor aim, nor focus in life, is just coasting along. That is the person who wakes up one day and says to themself; “Where did my life go?” “What did I do with my life?” “Have I even accomplished one thing to be proud of or to be remembered for?” But even for this person, it is not too late. No matter how many yesterdays you have under your belt, today is always a new day and tomorrow is ahead of you. It is never too late to start improving yourself and your life. So as you have been thinking about some new goals for the first part of the year, or you have made some “New Years resolutions,” make one that will last. Make a resolution or a goal that you will accomplish (fill in the blank), and then figure out how you are going to get there from here. Find your short, mid, and long term steps or goals that it is going to take to accomplish your desired end result. Remember to go over the plan in your mind on a daily or at least a weekly basis. Build a strong mental image of your goal, and keep it fresh in your mind. Don’t be afraid to work hard, but adjust as necessary along the way. Remember to whole heartedly believe in yourself and your goals. I am confident you can reach them!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
We are not currently using the NHSRA online membership program but at the National level this system will be utilized for contestant bios. It is highly encouraged that all State Qualifiers to go ahead and type their bios in the MMS system before the State Finals should you qualify for Nationals. Please go to the NHSRA website: www.nhsra.org and click Member Login in the upper right hand corner and this will take you to the online membership program. See below from the National office: REMINDER: ALL NJHFR and NHSFR biographies are to be submitted through the online MMS. Each member can log on and do this themselves. ALL active and returning members have an account profile already setup, even if the State/Province is not currently utilizing the membership system. If you do not know your username, there is a ‘forgot username’ link underneath the login field. It will prompt you to enter the email address we have on file. We strongly encourage ALL members to access their profile and enter their bios now, so by the time NJHFR/NHSFR rolls around everyone has been given plenty of time and notified that ALL BIOGRAPHIES ARE SUBMITTED ONLINE!!! Like last year, ALL bios MUST be entered online in order for them to be ready by the National Finals announcers. The email address the National office has on file is the one used on their membership application. Contact your rodeo secretary if you are unsure what email was submitted.
Our Mission: Texas High School Rodeo Promote the sport of rodeo and expose its positive image to the general public; Preserve the Western Heritage; Offer a privilage of family bonding; Offer an opportunity of continuing education; Maintain the highest regard for the livestock

Viva Las Headbands 46
Cowboy Times it’s NFR time! If you’re reading this there’s a good chance you are reading it from VEGAS BABY! Hey speaking of babies....this is an extra extra special additional for me! Not only is it our Vegas issue that will be all over sin city during the Cowboy invasion but I’ve got a special collection that is going to be available in Vegas! As a little rodeo baby myself I was known for a signature headband, bow, or both. I’ve carried that style with me for years long past childhood. I’ve always loved a headband and still frequently wear them as a 20 something year old college girl! As do many of my friends and some of my personal favorite western fashion I follow on social media’s! So when Teegan Kay Boutique a baby, toddler, & children’s handmade Etsy shop out of my home state of Arizona asked me to help design a headband collection from my new home in Texas I was SO EXCITED. My original love of fashion was always big dreams as a little girl...in headbands...designing my own lines, that’s always been the end goal for me. I’ve created a collection with Teegan Kay boutique I am so so proud of. For all the little fashionistas of the rodeo world, designed by a past rodeo kid, I’ve taken all the elements I love now and distinct patterns I’m know for wearing today and incorporated them into a perfect collection of baby, toddler, kid and adult headbands. YEP! You didn’t think I wouldn’t wear my own headbands!?? The larges are the perfect accessory to glam up a messy bun, ponytail or some loose curls on us big girls! The best part!?? My fellow little rodeo kid Addy May Hass daughter of steer wrestler Clayton Hass will be carrying them in Vegas for me at her boutique! Little Sierra Rae who was signing autographs with Dad at Cowboy Christmas in her headband would have never imagined all these years later she’d have her own line out just a few feet away from those spots she used to sit with her Dad, and watch him and all of his success!
